ICON Okanagan The Premier Lifestyle Magazine Volume 2, Issue 4
Some reflections ...
Here we are, sitting at our desks towards the end of September. It is an unbelievable 30 degrees, record-breaking they say. Great for our farmers and winemakers, it more than makes up for the late but beautiful and dry summer we had this year. Unfortunately it brought us fires as well, the one in Peachland bringing back memories from 2003, but thanks to our courageous firefighters a catastrophe was averted.

Only hours before uploading this issue, we also have to think about this time 2 years ago. Two guys had a vision and were just putting together some ideas for what would become the Okanagan Valley’s only free lifestyle magazine! Our first issue came out in late November 2010, and you are reading our 8th edition. Time flies! A big thank you to all of our supporters and to you, our readers! We always love to hear from you, whether it is praise or criticism, and we always try to make each and every issue a new milestone. In this issue we are debuting another new column, “Okanagan ICONs”, where we introduce interesting people who have made or are on their way to making an impact on the Valley. And there is more to come ... we are already hard at work on the next edition of the Okanagan Valley’s favourite lifestyle magazine, ICON Okanagan!

Introducing ... Bowser! Our ICONic team is growing. Our newest member, Bowser, joined us just a few short weeks ago and it hasn’t taken him long to find his favourite position in the company. He is now in possession of his own office and even a comfy leather chair (we have also found that it is better not to argue with him!) His position? Well, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our new ... accounts receivable clerk! At only 15 weeks of age he’s got some training to do so he’ll be hanging around the office quite a bit. Make sure you come by and visit! Bowser would love to meet you (but don’t forget a treat!)

What an amazing evening! Celebrating 10 successful years in business, owner of Chevy’s Source for Sports Greg Evtushevski and his family hosted an incredible evening at South East Kelowna’s Bo.ttega. With a host of local, national and international hockey stars in attendance Greg and his family set up the event as a fundraiser for a local society helping youth achieve their educational goals. Anne Pistawka president of COBBS/Central Okanagan Bursary&Scholarship Society spoke on behalf of the organization and introduced Lynn Tran a local student whose nursing education was made possible through the society’s generous scholarship. During the fully catered event attendees enjoyed some fabulous food, local beer and wine as well as both silent and live auctions. Thanks for having us Chevy! We had a blast!

What’s better is you can live here, exquisite new and heritage homes flank the street each offering their own take on what lakeside living really embodies. Cruising down the street on a particularly gorgeous Fall 2012
Moving towards the main entrance the exquisitely manicured shrubs lead the way while providing impenetrable privacy. Entering through the front door we are immediately struck by how light and airy the space feels, from the gorgeous solid Canadian maple hardwood flooring to the sky lights above. Having undergone considerable renovations both structural and cosmetic, the home offers old world charm while delivering the modern conveniences that even the most discerning buyers demand.
Thursday Morning we arrive at a particularly enchanting home at 1986 Abbott Street. Buzzing in through the private gate, we enter a paradise shrouded in incredible old growth trees. As the gate closes behind us we are transported into a romantic oasis overflowing with old world charm. Beautiful brick faรงade coupled with horizontal wood panelling offers the perfect background as wisteria creeps upward along the building creating an idyllic street appeal. To the immediate right is ample space for the storage of a large recreational vehicle as well as an immaculate oversized three stall garage. Inside, there is plenty of space to safely store your everyday driver and a sporty coupe or two while ample storage and a convenient work bench flank the back wall.
Fall 2012
To the left lays the great room flooded with early afternoon sunlight, an impressive two storey fireplace commands your attention without overpowering the space. Directly ahead, floor to ceiling glass offers incredible views of the beautiful yard, the colourful garden beds, beach, and wharf ahead, not to mention 76 feet of lake frontage. Through a set of French doors we are provided with instant access to one of three outdoor living spaces designed to take advantage of the Okanagan sunshine throughout all hours of the day. Back indoors we find an immaculately renovated gourmet kitchen which opens into the formal dining area and offers access to another outdoor living space. As a center piece, a long island capable of seating the entire family acts as a pedestal for stunning exotic granite, brushed mosaic stainless material adorns the backsplash, while solid maple cabinetry provides storage. the kitchen is a complete butler’s pantry equipped with its elegant granite counters, desk space, refrigerator and even access to outdoor cooking and patio area. Once again moving forward we enter the family room, a cozy intimate space where one can enjoy a book by the wood burning fireplace or sit down with the family for a board game or movie, this space also offers access to the outdoor living area creating a fabulous connection with nature. Ahead we find the powder room, equipped with a large custom shower clad with gorgeous travertine throughout. Indirect lighting features accent the custom vanity while creating a depth to the space, really opening it up. To the immediate left we find a large laundry room offering plenty of space to work, fold, and even iron. High efficiency appliances stand hidden beneath exquisite travertine counters and gorgeous custom cabinetry. And if you’ve got a bit of work on your hands why not throw in a movie and watch it on the built in television while you do that ironing.

As we moved back towards the entrance along the way we find an incredibly cute wine cellar tucked underneath the staircase and offering storage for nearly 800 bottles of your choice. A perfect hidden gem only steps away from the kitchen and formal dining areas. Heading upstairs we tread upon the original oak spiral staircase, a romantic reminder of the home in its initial form. Immediately ahead and to the left we find the master suite, a beautiful space, full of light, with access to a large patio and outdoor sleeping area. Indoors we find the ultimate walk in closet including custom cabinetry and storage for all your clothing and knick knacks as well as its own separate laundry for absolute convenience. We can’t forget to mention the fabulous en suite appointed with elegant marble counter tops, natural travertine flooring, in floor heating and an incredible refinished enamel bath tub. Adding to the luxury is an extraordinarily large custom walk in shower equipped with a rain head, body sprayers and enough water flow for at least two. Flanking the master suite are two intimate guest suites each offering their own en suite bathrooms and plenty of space to stay in comfort for days on end, the only downside is its unlikely anyone will want to leave. As we move back downstairs and through the front door we find it is hard not to connect with this home. An oasis of old world charm in a serene enclave. Fall 2012
HOW TO BE A WOMAN by Caitlin Moran Though they have the vote and the pill and haven’t been burned as witches since 1727, life isn’t exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Oh boy, this one will haunt us ... as “How to be a Woman” by “the British Tina Fey” and “a feminist heroine for our times,” columnist and author Caitlin Moran, is part memoir, part rant and part manifesto. Some of you will love it, some will hate it, but most will admit that with the hype around the “Fifty Shades of Grey” books this one could go viral. Oh, right, just to clarify something for our male readers: Sorry guys, but How to Be a woman is really not a book to tell your girlfriend or wife how to wear playboy bunny ears or walk in 6 inch heels. It is also not another man hating book (Caitlin Moran is married to one, after all). How to be a Woman is a rather brilliant description of modern day feminism. The book is divided into selfdeprecating chapters (“I Start Bleeding!” “I Become Furry!” “I Don’t Know What To Call My Breasts!”), following its anti-heroine from her 13th birthday (182 pounds, friendless, fleeing from gravel-flinging yobs) onward, exploring how the modern female body has become a series of problems to be solved.
Usually at great expense to its inhabitant. Funny, smart and wise, ‘How to be a Woman’ by Caitlin Moran is essential reading for feminists of either gender. Or, as Peggy Orenstein (author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter) says: “Caitlin Moran is so fabulous, so funny, so freshly feminist. I don’t want to be like her—I want to be her. But if I can’t, at least I can relish her book. You will, too.” How to be a Woman Paperback: 320 pages Publisher: Ebury Press ISBN-10: 0091940737 ISBN-13: 978-0091940737
About the Author Caitlin Moran (born 1975) was brought up on a council estate in Wolverhampton, where she was home-educated, wore a poncho, and had boys throw stones at her whilst calling her ‘a bummer’. Understandably keen to forge a career and move on, Caitlin won the Observer’s Young Reporter of the Year competition at 15, and published her first novel, The Chronicles of Narmo, in the same year. She briefly presented Channel 4’s late-night music show Naked City, aged 17, and then became a columnist at The Times aged 18 - eventually ending up writing three award-winning columns a week for the paper. Caitlin lives on Twitter with her husband and two children, and spends an hour a week going ‘But it’s pronounced “Catlin”. I know! I know! The spelling unquestionably suggests otherwise! I am an idiot!’

2013 CAR GUIDE NEW RIDES
New car buyers have more choices than ever. The car companies are constantly trying to outbid one another by introducing new technology-laden models, promoting fuel efficient engines, and better warranties. The threat of even higher gas prices for the near future makes us think about acquiring a new vehicle, but how do we make a choice? Let us help you! We’ve put together this 2012-2013 New Car Buyer’s Guide, where we show you some of our favourite models currently on sale or soon to appear in showrooms. Be it electric or eclectic, Mini or Mercedes, $15k or $150k, gas guzzler or gas sipper, we’ve got you covered!
Fiat 500 ABARTH This little mean machine unleashes legendary Italian performance onto Canadian streets. Comes with a 160 hp 1.4L 16 valve turbocharged MultiAir engine and crisp sport-tuned suspension.
Acura RLX Set to go on sale in early 2013 to replace the RL, the 2013 RLX sedan will be the new flagship from Acura. Pictured is the concept we saw at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but we expect it to be very close to the final car. It will likely be equipped with V6 engines and have SH-AWD.
Mini JCW Countryman This performance model is being offered for the first time with MINI ALL4 all-wheeldrive. It is also the first John Cooper Works model with four doors, up to five seats and a large rear hatch. And you can even have it with a six-speed automatic transmission! SRT Viper It’s a brand-new Viper, but no longer a Dodge. It’s still big and bad, though. Some numbers: 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque from a front/mid-mounted 8.4-liter V10 give it the best power-to-weight ratio of any Viper ever built – and makes it the most torque-rich naturally aspirated production engine in the world. Available as standard highperformance SRT and GTS with two-mode active suspension and some nice interior upgrades.
BMW 6-series Gran Coupé The very first four-door Coupe in the history of BMW, the 6-series Gran Coupe splits the difference between a 5-series sedan and a 6-series coupe. A powerful 8 cylinder engine and the advanced chassis technology contribute to a sporty and dynamic driving experience. Available first as 650i xDrive with 445hp.
Chevrolet Trax An all new compact crossover, the Trax features room for 5 and won’t be sold in the United States. 20
ICON OKANAGAN
www.icon-okanagan.com
Fall 2012
Cadillac XTS Sedan Cadillac’s all-new flagship sedan offers front-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 (304 bhp). It is the most technologically advanced production car in the brand’s history and available in four trim levels.
Buick Encore Based on the same platform as the European-market Opel Corsa subcompact hatchback, the Encore is a compact, luxurious, and a somewhat sporty form of all-weather transportation. Powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder enginewith 140 horsepower.
Hyundai Santa Fe The next generation of the mid-size crossover utility vehicle comes with a powerful yet more fuel efficient 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or a new 2-litre 264 hp engine with 269 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai also revised the AWD system.
2013
Ford Escape All grown-up, the all-new third-generation Escape boasts significant powertrain and chassis upgrades. All engines have four cylinders, and there’s a host of technology upgrades to improve performance, environmental impact, safety and media connectivity.
Honda Accord Evolutionary, not revolutionary - that’s how we would describe the new ninth-generation Accord. It will debut Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology in two all-new powertrains, including the first North American application of Honda’s new 2.4-litre, direct-injected, 4-cylinder engine and a powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine with an available new 6-speed automatic transmission. Dodge Dart The all new compact that’s everything but compact. Chrysler’s newest entry in the compact-sedan segment is also the very first Chrysler vehicle to be based on Fiat Group architecture, the front-wheel-drive Dart utilizes lengthened and widened Alfa Romeo Giulietta underpinnings. Available with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder and a 160-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged and intercooled version.
Mazda6 Finally! The 2013 Mazda 6 is a stylish looker! The new model will replace the rather boring current Mazda 6. It is new from the ground up and is lighter, more fuel-efficient, better equipped, and bigger, too, with more space for both front and rear passengers. It is the second Mazda, after the CX-5, and the first sedan to feature the full suite of Mazda’s SkyActiv technologies. It is also the world’s-first capacitor-based regenerative braking system, engineered and developed by Mazda.
Mazda CX-5 The stylish new CX-5 is the first Mazda to get the company’s full Skyactiv treatment with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, lightweight construction, better platforms and sharper suspension. The competitively priced CX-5 already arrived at the dealerships. Fall 2012

NEW RIDES Kia K9/ Quoris The Kia K9 (or Quoris for export markets), is a full-size luxury sedan designed by former Audi-designer Peter Schreyer. It seems there will be two engine options, a 3.8 liter V6 and a direct-injection version rated at 329hp, both mated to an eightspeed automatic transmission. Neither price nor delivery dates have been announced but we expect it early next year.
Porsche Boxster/ Cayman The redesigned 2013 Porsche Boxster is already available and became an instant hit. Now it is all about the next Cayman. Heavily influenced by the Boxster, the new Cayman coupe will make its entry at this November’s Los Angeles Auto Show, with sales beginning in later 2012 or early 2013.
Mitsubishi Outlander Available in the latter part of 2013, there is still no word as to whether Mitsubishi will offer their all-new Outlander as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) here in Canada. According to Mitsubishi, the powertrain can run in full EV mode, series hybrid mode or parallel hybrid mode.
Nissan Altima The new Altima sedan looks and feels more upscale, has sophisticated new technology, and gets far better gas mileage than the model it replaces. Available with a 182-horsepower, four-cylinder and a 270-horsepower V-6.
Tesla Model S Production on the Tesla Roadster has ended, the focus is on the new Model S zero-emissions luxury sedan. With its own platform and a styling that reminds us of a Jaguar, you can choose from two motor-power levels, three battery packs, two onboard chargers, two trim packages, and several stand-alone options.

Lexus LFA Ok, ok. Not a “new” 2013 car, but it is just so cool that we have to include it. Plus - there’s one sitting at the local dealership! The Lexus LFA features a new V10 engine and a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) body. Here’s the downside: The circuit-tuned variant which was introduced in 2012 has a base price of US$445,000, making it the most expensive Japanese road car ever built. Ouch ...
Fall 2012
Subaru XV Crosstrek The new-for-2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek is basically an Impreza wagon with more ground clearance. The manufacturer claims it is the most fuel-efficient allwheel-drive crossover utility in North America. It is powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre Subaru boxer engine.
2013
Range Rover The 4th generation of the “reigning king of luxury SUVs” has just been revealed, and although bigger it lost a lot of weight. Land Rover proudly claims the new Range Rover is the world’s first aluminium monocoque SUV, and that 85 per cent of the vehicle is recyclable. Unfortunately it seems that they won’t bring their turbo diesel engines to North America, so we’re once again stuck with 5.0-litre V8s (teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission).
Volkswagen Golf The all-new Golf will be the first Volkswagen model to use the company’s heavily hyped MQB platform, giving it a significantly larger footprint than ever before – while still shaving around 100kg off the weight. The result is better fuel efficiency, a vastly improved crash protection and a larger interior. We also expect to see the latest generation of automatic parking systems, including an overhead parking system) with 360 degree graphics.

A Superior & Green Cleaning Experience You might associate the term “steam cleaning” with carpets and upholstery - but multifunctional steam cleaners have many uses in and around your home, cleaning and sanitizing windows, floors, bathrooms and kitchens, furniture, mattresses and upholstery, even jewellery and your car rims! They are also great to remove wrinkles and odours from clothing in seconds. All of this without the use of chemicals or cleaning detergents. How does it work? It is actually very simple. Dirt and grime have adhesive qualities that enable them to stick onto all types of surfaces. A steam cleaner works by rapidly heating up water (up to 150 degrees Celsius) to produce low-pressure, low moisture (4 to 6% water) water vapour. This hot vapour melts the adhesive and the dampness of the steam dilutes the adhesive. A wipe with a cloth quickly clears the dirt or grime away.

Steam is a natural source using just clean water to create a powerful cleaning force No harmful and expensive chemicals - extremely easy, safe and cost effective No toxic residues on surfaces and won’t stain clothing Steam kills 99% of bacteria such as e-coli, listeria, and salmonella, as well as dust mites Environmentally friendly – it only uses water! Versatile - can be used virtually anywhere for a wide variety of tasks
Handheld steam cleaners Portable steam cleaners are light-weight, highly portable and convenient to use. They are the best option if you’re only looking to steam clean on a small-scale, like for kitchen counter tops and hard-to-clean corners of the bathroom. We tested the Haan AllPro, which comes with a lot of accessories such as different nozzles, a garment & upholstery attachment and different brushes. The result? Let’s just say the whole kitchen has never looked cleaner! It was amazing to see the dirt that came off a clean looking counter top and stove top. We also used it for cleaning the tiles in a bathroom, and even the aluminium rims of our cars. Wow! If you need a multipurpose steamer, this is the one to get! Steam mops An upright steam mop with a water tank attached to the handle is the next-generation mop! Throw away your buckets, cleaning detergents and disinfectants. A steam mop cleans more effectively and sanitizes around your home in one simple step without the use of chemicals. The MultiforcePro SS-25 Sanitizing Steam Mop is one of the newest models on the market. Light weight, easy to use and assemble; best for quick and easy cleaning.

your shirts but you hate ironing, correct? There is a solution, and it is fun! A fabric steamer not only removes wrinkles, it also refreshes your clothing and other fabrics. It is a great improvement over the old stand-by, the iron. One, because people can reduce their trips to the dry cleaners – saving money and two, reducing the use of harmful chemicals that dry cleaners use on your clothing. You can also refresh and remove wrinkles from your curtains, upholstery and your delicate fabrics faster and easier. Which model to choose... Garment Steamer There are many models to choose from, starting as low as $80, but as always you will get what you pay for. We compared several models, ranging from $80 to $180, and although in the end they all did their job, there are big differences. First of all, the quality of construction. The cheaper versions used very stiff plastic hoses which made it very difficult to move the handle the way you wanted. Also, some of the lower-end models were on (non-lockable) rollers and moved all the time while we tried to steam a shirt. Very frustrating. Same with the poles. Some steamers we checked out had only a thin fragile looking pole, others have 2 sturdy poles. The next difference lays in the steam control. Cheaper models usually only have one setting, while the more professional ones come with variable steam control which make it more versatile. Then the wattage, heat up time and how compact it is for storage.
ment steamer with a variable high steam output and wide diffusion from the large steam head. It has two telescopic poles that adjust for comfort and push down for compact storage and a suitcaseinspired “tilt and roll” feature for easy transportation. If you are not the biggest fan of ironing and love your shirts and pants wrinklefree, if you want to freshen up your clothing – this is the way to go! Compact Garment Steamer So you don’t want or need a bigger stand-up garment steamer, but would still like to freshen up your garments once in a while, and get your shirts wrinklefree? How about a compact, portable unit? Have a look at the Pro Compact Steamer by Rowenta. They used all the knowledge they put into their commercial grade steamers and put it into a portable unit. 1400 Watts, a 1 liter water tank, a soft-touch hose, a fast heat-up time and the right accessories including brushes and a door hook. Again – we did our homework, looked at many models, including multipurpose handheld steam cleaners, but found many differences. If you are looking for a portable unit, the Rowenta should be on top of your list. Rowenta Steamers www.rowenta.ca

Benvenuto Luigi!!
The Italian Icon - Now available in the Okanagan
So, you have always wanted to drive a cool red Italian coupe but haven’t got the funds for a Ferrari? Well, the Fiat 500 might be the next best thing. Fiat? Yes, the Italian car manufacturer is back in the Canadian market. A major player on the world automotive stage, Fiat recently formed a global strategic alliance with Chrysler, and the first model being introduced is the cute retro-styled modern version of the Fiat 500. With high fuel prices and evermore congested roads, the small-car segment is definitely booming. It is really growing fast, with most manufacturers trying to get a piece of the cake, and some of the most daring bodies in the business are among the smallest. The only problem most of the competitors have is – they lack personality! Not so the new “Cinquecento” (say “cheen-kay-CHEN-toh”), as the Italians call it. Built in Mexico, the reincarnation of the petite Fiat 500 is a thoroughly modern small car with premium engineering and retro-chic styling. At ICON Okanagan we already drove the 500 for
more than 2,000 kilometers in Europe, and recently had the opportunity to drive one of the first models to arrive at the new Fiat 500 dealership in Kelowna. The Exterior This little head-turner screams, “let’s have fun!” A subcompact three-door hatchback with front-wheel drive, the designers of the Fiat 500 did a fantastic job of modernizing the typical looks of the old 500. Starting with the whiskers at the front and the sharp tumblehome at the rear, you can even customize this car to your liking. There are no less than 14 different exterior colours, 11 inside hues and five styles of wheels. And there is more. Choose
from several decal sets, get the chrome mirror caps and fuel cap our car was equipped with, just get creative and you won’t see another one like it on the road. The modern version of the cute Fiat 500 is anything but boring! The Interior Fun and cheerful, with the extra “pep”, this is one of the coolest interiors we have seen for a while. Just look at the retro-style body-coloured dash with its unique instrument cluster. It’s kind of a gauge within a gauge, with the speedometer and tachometer on the same axis and a LCD screen in the center. Want it even cooler looking? No problem - you can have the HVAC and stereo controls in a white Bakelite-look plastic! Fit and finish are great, the materials are upscale and feel much more premium than you’d expect at this price. And the room? Fiat claims it has more cargo space and more backseat legroom than many competitors, so we did a little test and put a six-foot, four-inch man behind the steering wheel and a five foot 8 inch test-sitter into the backseat. Both of them had no headroom or legroom problems. The cargo space is sufficient and you can flipdown the rear seats should you need more (almost 500 litres). What else? It may be a small car with a small price-tag, but Luigi is equipped with some nice technology. Take Blue&Me, a fully integrated in-vehicle infotainment system that allows
users to make hands-free telephone calls and control music and other functions using voice commands. Or how about seven air bags, Electronic Stability Control, four-wheel disc antilock brakes, child seat anchor system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. All standard in the 500. Our test-drive The original Fiat 500 had a 13-horsepower two-cylinder air-cooled motor mounted in the rear driving the rear wheels. Fear not – the modern version may have a tiny engine bay, but the 1.4-litre “Multiair” inline-four has got a lot of pep, cranking out just over 100 horsepower. We took the 500 on a 70km trip through the Okanagan and truly enjoyed the go-kart like handling, the sporty soprano note from the exhaust and the perfect transmission setting when we hit the “Sport” button. Conclusion We love it! If you want to combine economy minded transportation with a bit more style and flair than most

other cars out there, the Fiat 500 should be on top of your shopping list. Starting at less than $14,000 for the “Pop” version, this must be one of the most affordable ways to own a cool ride. There are two other trim levels, Sport ($16,000) and Lounge ($17,000), as well as the 500c, an “almost convertible” version with a roll-back canvas top, starting at $17,495. All share the same engine: a 1.4-litre inline four-cylinder with either a five-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic with manual shift mode. Should you crave for some

500,000 ways to EXPRESS YOURSELF Wait – 500,000? Yes! With over 500,000 ways to express yourself, the FIAT 500 defines who you are as an individual. Just think about it: There are 14 exterior colours, 11 interior colour and trim combinations, and 5 wheel choices. Add roof and or bodyside graphics, chose from several moulding inserts, order a chrome shift knob or mirror caps, and pick from one of the cool changeable key covers – the Fiat 500 is a car that was built to season your taste, and they have tons of fun stuff to spice up your ride! And if that was not enough, you can go crazy with some funky Fiat Gear branded merchandise. When we picked up our demo, the dealership was already working on several very cool customized cars. Just ask them ... and get the car to express yourself!
MEET the TEAM We just love it when someone is passionate about what they do. Well, Lorelei and Dean McAuley and their more than 50 employees at Okanagan Chrysler Jeep Dodge just love the Italian newcomer. They have already customized several of them and are waiting eagerly for the next ones to arrive, especially the 500c, the open-air version of the 500 with an electrically operated soft top. So if you want to know more about the 500 or want to book a test drive, just give them a call or visit them...and say “ciao!” from us!

UNDER CONSTRUCTION - Bernard Avenue Well it is finally happening ladies and gentlemen! The Bernard Avenue Revitalization project is well under way. While it may seem like a bit of an inconvenience in Kelowna’s downtown core the reality is we are in for some great changes. The $14-million investment is aimed at rejuvenating Kelowna’s “Main Street” in order to enhance both residents’ and visitors’ experiences as well as replace all of the aging utilities and roadway. Some of the new improvements will include wider sidewalks, beautiful new coordinated street furniture, many more trees, vegetation and new landscaping. This Bernard Avenue project is one of the first to be realized from the Downtown Kelowna Plan. If you have been having some difficulties navigating through downtown lately, make sure you check out www.kelowna.ca for a comprehensive map of the detours as well as more information regarding the project. With construction going ahead full steam 6 am to 12 am Sunday through Thursday due to amended noise bylaws, the projected completion of Phase 1B is November 2012 with surface works scheduled for more favourable weather conditions.
Need Your Support Hayley McDougall, only 30 years old, has had what is coined ‘new daily head pain’ for the past 10 years. Her plight began in university and has been a struggle day in and day out since. She has been suffering from severe pain rated at 10/10 centered in her temples none stop for the past year, leaving her virtually none functional. After taking part in a three year study at the Mayo clinic is was determined that neurostimulation using electrodes placed directly where the pain is felt, significantly relives the discomfort. However, as neuro-stimulating techniques are used for a variety of different pains in Canada, it is not used for head pain. Because of this, surgery of this sort is not covered by the B.C. Medical Services Plan. As funding has been denied, they are reaching out to the public to help Hayley regain her quality of life and get back to a functional state with her husband and daughter. Please check out www.giveforward.com/hopeforhayley and see why it is so important to donate. Donations can sent to Hayley McDougall or Kathy Goldie and at to Box 1814, Vernon, B.C., V1T 8C3, or dropped off at Goldie’s office at General Surgery Clinic, 3107-35th Ave., Vernon. 36

About the Okanagan: -->
T
he Okanagan is a place I was introduced to, of course - because of hockey. My brothers at a very young age started to go to summer hockey camps in Enderby, which left the rest of my family to vacation
on Mara Lake . The 20 years that we spent water skiing on the Shuswap, eating peaches and ice cream, and meeting friends that we would keep for a life time - became the highlight of every summer growing up. Needless to say, the Okanagan holds a very special place in my heart. To have the opportunity to now expand the Joga Brand in Kelowna and the rest of the Okanagan just feels right. The people here embrace healthy living/ lifestyle and love sports - its a perfect match. Jana Webb is an ambassador for LuLu Lemon Canada and is partnered with GP8 Sports Water and FuelNutrition. “Joga” is now available on iTunes and DVD.

A special Juice Joint on Naramata bench Interesting! And ... really nice! That's what you may think when you turn into the parking lot at Misconduct Winery in Penticton. With its vertical pine siding the winery looks like one of those charming old farm buildings we have seen in the movies, and the moment you step through the door you certainly get the feel of a turn of the century experience.
A tasting room, and a lounge! Originally built in 1909 the interior was taken down to the open studs, keeping the original structure to build around it.
The whole tasting room, from its wooden floors to the beams, with all the old photographs, artworks and collectors items, has such a warm and cozy feeling, you forget that you have come to taste some wine. You can almost hear the great music of the prohibition era! Well, I think they had some Ella Fitzgerald on, but you know what we mean! Fascinating!
they not only owned their own little orchard, Maria's brother and then her sister and brotherin-law followed and joined the ever growing Portuguese community in the South Okanagan. If you want to hear more about this amazing story, ask Richard to show you an historic Penticton newspaper clipping , telling the story of the original five couples arriving in the Okanagan from Portugal!
The suspects are lined up, waiting for you ... Enjoy!
Richard da Silva must have been watching us for a few minutes, and we can't believe that we haven't noticed him. With the statue of a larger than life football player, he is all but missable. Wearing a straw hat (we hear he loves hats) and some farmer's clothes, he looks as if he just parked his tractor after a hard days work. “"And that's exactly what I just did,"” Richard laughs, “and I'm not done yet for today!"” We spent the next hour in the comfortable leather chairs in the lounge, listening to Richard's stories about his life, his heritage, and his passion.
Locally born and bred
His parents Maria and Manuel emigrated to the Okanagan in 1957. Leaving their home country of Portugal wasn't an easy decision, but the courageous couple saw a better future in Canada and heavy-heartedly left friends and families behind and moved to Naramata. It was tough, very tough, but four years l a t e r 40

"All of the Portuguese families around me when I grew up were farmers, had orchards and made wine from the vineyards they had planted,"” Richard says, “"so we care about the quality of food we eat, and good wine was part of my life from the Represents the adventures of three ritzy dolls dancing their way to beginning. Tin Pin Alley. Not knowing nothin’ from nothin’ but having fun in every juice joint and speakeasy along the way.
Each doll has her own high personality: Viognier, a blonde, is fresh, sassy and slender, Chenin Blanc, a redhead, is juicy, fun and voluptuous, and Chardonnay, a brunette, is luscious complex and elegant.
A late night bull session leading to a caper of grape proportions. All dolls, molls and bearcats aside, they’re on the lam and the race is on to get the hooch harvest back to the joint. The berries are ready and the clams have been exchanged. A classic pick of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is done and all that’s left is to take the grapes for a ride and not get pinched
It was a set-up, the “South Side Seven” have been bumped off by the “Un-crushables”... all that’s left is the mop up. The “bleeding” starts by us put’n the squeeze on a small amount of free run juice from our blockbuster grapes. With seven key varietals, it makes for a truly complex wine. St. Valentine’s Massacre Rosé has been bled to perfection. Sometimes justice is unking, in this case a one-of-a-kind wine.
I'm not an investor who always had the dream of owning a winery, I'm the real deal. I spent all my childhood in orchards and vineyards, learned the job from the the day I was born. Right here in the South Okanagan. Not only do I know farming, I know the area like the back of my hand!" In the end it was just a question of time before Richard made the decision to not only grow for some of the wineries, but to open his own. "We were looking for a way to express our passion for farming and winemaking, but with an edge. The third ingredient in a good party, other then sensational food and wine, is laughter!" Only rainforest, exotic animals, foreign languages, and excitement ahead. Guides leading you through seemingly endless jungle, interpreters communicating for you, there is no greater sense of adventure, no more vulnerable a position. Could you imagine the rewards? That is precisely what Kelowna local and Kelowna Secondary School alumni Mia Chorney and her husband Lyn have set out to do. The couple has literally taken on the role of treasure hunters. Venturing to the far corners of the earth in search of unique pieces, traditional artisans, and new experiences is the couples passion and specialty. Trekking far and wide from Burma to Indonesia, kayaking through hidden rivers , hiking deep into the jungle and visiting remote villages, Mia and Lyn have encountered an incredible variety of people, cultures and artists on their adventures. Often establishing long lasting friendships with the artisans they meet during their travels, they have found themselves gaining intimate knowledge of the cultures they immerse themselves in, joining families for traditional meals, learning customs, and truly understanding that value and meaning of the works of art these individuals create.
Arising from their mutual love of travel, cultural exploration, landscape and home dÊcor Mia and Lyn decided to open SunCity Treasures & Imports. Focusing on fair trade and respect for the cultural, traditional, and religious significance of the items they source and import they have consistently amassed some of the most interesting pieces you could imagine. Meandering through the store you are transported into the world of the artisan, into the jungle or to the mud huts and rice patties of a foreign world. Myriads of fascinating handcrafted works of art, impeccable custom designed furniture and one off dÊcor pieces surround you. Whether it’s a hand crafted wicker day bed custom designed by Mia herself, a massive painting of a fiery Asian sunset or a wine rack assembled 44

from a decommissioned river canoe the variety is incredible. Yet each piece is of limited production and unlikely to be found next season, or in any other store. Each item offers an intimate connection with the artisan who created it making it that much more unique and special. Having built a considerable network of both personal and business relationships throughout South East Asia, Mia and Lyn are proud to be able to consistently offer a variety of new items, striving never to repeat themselves; they are constantly working alongside artisans to create unique designs and items that work well in the North American market. RECASTING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS A snap-shot of Financial Performance One of the first things a buyer does when faced with a potential business that meets his, or her financial and lifestyle criteria, is to consider the following factors: • How much money could I make with this business? • How much is the current owner taking home from the business? • How much has the owner taken in recent years? • What is the likelihood of this cash flow continuing? • What are the prospects for growth?”
The answer to these questions will ultimately determine if a potential buyer will move on to the investigative stage (the formal “Due Diligence” phase), or not. The vendor’s ability to answer these questions concisely and clearly is very important in keeping a serious and qualified buyer interested. Therefore, having an easy to read “snap-shot” of historical and probable future financial performance is fundamental to the process of selling a business. The process of recasting financial statements is essential in determining the value of a business when the owner’s intention is to sell. Recasting requires extensive investigation to ensure that all relevant and appropriate adjustments are correctly reported. Most business owners diligently minimize their overall tax exposure and maximize the benefits that come with business ownership, and that is just solid, practical business management. Recasting financial statements to reflect the Owner’s Adjusted Cash Flow, (often referred to as, Sellers Discretionary Earnings, “SDE”), is essential in answering the Buyer’s burning questions about the cash flow of the business. Accordingly, the historical financial statements and future forecasted income/expense to develop a year by year Adjusted Cash Flow Com46

parative Summary, (a “snap- shot”, if you will), of past, present and probable future financial results, need to be examined. Determining Adjusted Cash Flow requires extensive investigation and analysis to ensure that all relevant and appropriate adjustments and “ add – backs” are calculated correctly. The recasting process identifies items such as owner’s benefits and excessive and/or discretionary expenses, personal vehicle expenses, personal insurances, wages to family members for income splitting purposes, perks, incentives/bonuses, personal travel, loans to affiliates and so forth. There may also be one time non-recurring revenues and expenses such as bad debt, unusual major repairs, or one time sale of assets and the like. Finally, there are non-cash items to be taken into account such as amortization and depreciation. Recasting this financial information into a comparative financial summary provides an easy overall view of the company, and facilitates meaningful evaluations of year-by-year performance, as well as simplifying comparisons with other investment opportunities that the buyer may also be considering. Accountant prepared year-end financial statements, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements and notes do tell the whole “story”, however, the challenge for a buyer is to qualify the answers they are seeking as to “how much money could one potentially take home from this business”. These answers are not always easily apparent from a quick overview of the financial statements. The year-end statements are often produced with a strategy in mind to reduce profit (taxable income), and not necessarily to highlight all of the benefits the owner is deriving from the business. Many details must be considered durFall 2012
ing the process of determining value and selling a business. Recasting the financial statements to create an Adjusted Cash Flow Comparative Summary is one important key indicator of Market Value, and guides the owner by setting realistic expectations of what the business is worth. Although recasting clearly plays a pivotal role in a business valuation, it alone does not determine the total value of any given company. A business valuation is far more comprehensive and furthermore, takes into consideration the intangible value of the company’s goodwill, copyrights, trademarks, patents, proprietary products and processes, as well as other relevant factors. Finally, remember that the industry your company falls under and short and long-term economic forecasts for the industry, are also potentially taken into account by a savvy prospective buyer and are out of the Vendor’s control. Thorough preparation on the vendor’s part however, can go a long way in countering any perceived negativity caused by a fluctuating marketplace. OMG …they are sharp. No, really. The knife that Mark just put in my hand slices effortlessly through the tomato as if it was non-existent. I did not even have to put pressure on it, it just slices through the veggie with its own weight, leaving super thin paper like strips you can read a newspaper through. Unreal. Absolutely fascinating. We are at KnifeWear, Kelowna’s new mecca for knife nerds. Owner Kevin Kent opened his second store on Pandosy Street in June of this year, following the success of the Calgarybased store he opened quietly in March 2008. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Kevin moved to Calgary as a young teen. Passionate about food, he quit college to work full time as a cook and before long, enrolled in a Culinary Apprenticeship program After graduating, he honed his skills at several well-known restaurants (Kevin even was Sous Chef at Fergus Henderson’s influential London eatery in St John) before he decided to travel. Mr. Kent went to the Middle East for some time before moving to London, England. Here he met a Japanese knife maker who introduced him to the high-performance knives. When he moved back to Calgary in 2006, Kevin realized how terrible the knives really were, nothing like the fantastic Japanese knives he used in London, and so he deiced to bring in some Japanese knives to make a little extra money on the side.
Knifewear also carries a selection of straight razors, trendy cookbooks and kitchen accessories
Soon after he established contacts in Japan through his connections in London, and started importing knives.
“At first, I was just doing this because I could get really good knives that I couldn’t normally afford,” Kevin laughs, “but when the Calgary Herald ran a small blurb about me and the knives with my personal phone number there was no turning back. I opened my first little store, and had to move into a way bigger one soon after.” The rest is history, and Kevin now owns 2 stores and works with his Japanese network to design, market, and sell handmade Japanese knives worldwide. The Kelowna KnifeWear store carries over 25 different lines of knives in an abundance of shapes and sizes to suit any application. Yes, they are expensive, ranging from the hundred dollar mark all the way up to a crazy-
cool $3,500, but once you have had one in your hands, cutting tomatoes and potatoes, you won’t go back to your old Henkels. It’s the sharpness that sets them apart. “Japanese knives are made of harder steel than European knives and can be sharpened 48

to anywhere from 30 to 10 degrees–most European knives with their softer steel can only be sharpened to 45 degrees,” store manager Mark explains. “High carbon steels such as Super Aogami, “super blue steel” which is a high carbon/tungsten steel mix, or Shirogami “white carbon” steel which is a much purer form of high carbon steel, produce the highest sharpness knives.“
But even with the same materials, different blacksmiths, different forging techniques, and different production methods will yield different final results..

The Lady
Be the woman a gentleman adores.... A recent DIY paint job in my new home left me desperate for newspapers. That’s when the Icon magazine slipped to the floor and caught my attention. I got stuck on Dr. Brix’s article: The Gentleman. “Hmmm…” I thought, “What if a woman’s perspective on issues like these could be heard?” The rest, as they say, is about to be history! So a few ideas we would like to share with the men (we know you read these articles, because we read yours!): These simple things go a long way: • Brush your teeth! I love dancing, which woman doesn’t? And how unfortunate when the experience was ruined for me a while back. There I was on the dance floor with an avid believer in eye contact and the smell of... Could it be... tuna breath?! Surely not. Think of what lies ahead: going to a dance means close proximity. Fresh breath is vital. • Body odour is understandable in the gym, not so much elsewhere. BUT when there’s a cloud of cologne (ladies: perfume!) travelling around with you it might put some unwanted distance between yourself and others! • Whistling or honking is not in any way considered manly. • Scratching or ‘readjusting’… disgusting (for the sake of rhyming) but seriously!
by Lourine Welding
Easy Tiger. Your conversation shouldn’t lay your entire heart bare. Just so, the way you dress is important. Remembering there is more to you than meets the eye is how you present yourself in a way that keeps mystery a true part of who you are. When everything about your physique meet the eyes of all who care to look, that’s when it’s hard to believe there is more than just that. Lady and the Tramps? Chewing gum, drumming long nails, being on your phone or using bad language is tasteless and dishonoring. And please don’t say: “Oh no! It’s OK” when he gets distracted with other girls or on his phone. It’s synonymous for: I don’t expect you to think I’m worthy of respect. Not so gentle… Interesting that gentle prefixes the word man but not lady. Generally we have a gentle disposition but men have to consciously exercise gentleness. Be confident in your identity as a woman and don’t fall prey to thinking you have to act like a man to be taken seriously. How sad when femininity goes out the window. A lady can be strong yet graceful. -> More in the next issue… Lourine Welding Lourine Welding is a lady working in Kelowna as an Occupational Therapist. • Use words like dude, chic or bro only when with your buddies.
Cutting to the chase: Many a beautiful face has been turned into an attractive personality by that X-factor. It’s simple: just add good people skills and a positive attitude. So is it all up to the guys? While we wait for the guy to initiate, we definitely have a role to play. In being a lady you will attract the kind of attention you would want: that of a leading man. Here’s how to act the part… I see you. When a man asks you on a date he’s crossed the proverbial chicken line by putting his heart out there. Acknowledge that. Be nice, smiling is always a good start! Real ladies appreciate chivalry; he should open the door for you. This is not the time to yank the door closed before he has a chance to close it. My way is better! Let him be a man. When he rises to the occasion by leading you, follow him; if you overpower him, chances are he might not want to try again. Feel free to communicate options if you want to. His ego will handle it if you do it in a way that is noncriticizing and rather something to add to his already great idea. 2012 ICON OKANAGAN 50 Winter

They should have taught you this in school....
The Bro Code We live in world that is constantly changing. Within that ever evolving reality, it is comforting to know that there are some things that will always remain constant. There are universal laws, truths and rules that never change. Gravity, the golden rule, and many other universal truths touch us on a daily basis, but the rules that exist between buddies /dudes/bros are also of the utmost importance. Those rules have recently become popularized as the “bro code.” The majority of the man- commandments are well-known and have been written about in numerous places. Let’s observe a few of the best ones and see if we can make sure we are all on the same page as gentlemen and friends in an effort to corral some of the chaos that is the relationships we share with our bros. Am I feeding into the typical chauvinistic male stereotype here? Yes I am, but it’s funny, so please save your angry letters. Remember these: • Never use the urinal right next to another dude if there is an option to leave a gap. While you’re in there... eyes on the wall in front of you. • You love cigars and sports.... Even if you don’t love cigars or sports
• An ounce of appearance is worth a pound of substance. A good buddy will always point out obvious outfit design flaws that may impede another buddy’s chances of meeting a lady. (That was a test because a dude never wears an “outfit”) • A slap in the face is warranted for any dude still uttering the phrase “my bad.” Open hand... like a gentleman. • Should you look at your bro and see, on his face, an eyelash, a piece of food, or any other foreign object, DO NOT attempt to remove it. He is on his own. • Under no circumstances are two dudes permitted to share an umbrella.
It has been said that friendship is like wetting your pants. Everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth. Cherish your Bros, respect the code, and make sure you look good doing it.
Dr. Christian Brix Dr. Christian Brix is a writer, a gentleman, and a Chiropractor living in and loving Kelowna B.C. www.brixfamilychiropractic.com
• A buddy’s ex is off limits forever... Unless he is so supportive that he offers to pay for dinner on your first date. Be warned though...it could be test! • Helping a buddy move is always required. Payment however, must consist of a high carb meal (eg. Pizza) and a beverage containing some form of alcohol (eg. Beer). Fresh squeezed lemonade made with care and love is not sufficient. • If your buddy asks you to put sunscreen on him, the answer is no. • When dancing, your arms must never raise above your head. As well, when on the dance floor, you may not sing along with the music unless the song was recorded in the 70’s or 80’s by a band who specialized in hard rock (Eg. AC/DC), and keep your eyes open. • Any object thrown in your direction with reasonable speed or accuracy must be caught. • If Christopher Columbus didn’t need directions, then you shouldn’t either. When traveling with a bro, don’t stop until you run out of road or gas. Fall 2012

DRIVING IN THE RAIN by Rachel Hockett “A Heartwarming Journey from Loss to Resilience” Driving in the Rain offers a compelling portrayal of family dynamics through a comparative analysis of two very different families. It is the unexpected death of their beloved husband and father Kevin that leaves Lucy Marks and her two young children Paul and Zoey stunned and devastated. On their path of rebuilding their lives, looking for strength, hope and support, the children lean on their mother, who finds a welcome help when attorney Nick Norton comes into her life. She falls in love again and the two get married but Lucy suddenly realizes that her second husband is not the light-hearted and playful person she met. She first only catches glimpses of an increasingly edgy and tense side of him, foreshadows that will again change her life. Across the country, Nathan Grunwald plies his trade as a CPA to the wealthy, and tries every way he can to provide a safety net for his stunning but volatile wife, Charlotte, and his adorable daughter, Cassie. Hockett takes
this tale of wealth, privilege, alcoholism, and teenage rebellion to compare the two family dynamics. Rachel Hockett’s “Driving in the Rain” is an engaging, pleasant and most of all captivating story with a compelling twist. It is not the typical book you will find in our reviews and we haven’t seen in on any bestseller lists (yet). But believe us, it is a story that will stay with you. introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE
ADAM SCORGIE (creative hustler & indie film-maker)
by Rick Maddison
The Union is the business behind the marijuana laws that are now in place throughout North America because there’s much more going on than what we believed twenty years ago and sadly it seems that so many more businesses are moving in the direction of “What makes a profit” not what is good for the environment. I hate it when someone says, “Well I turned down all this work and I did…” and I’m like dude, then you’re an idiot. I don’t turn down work, I work full 40 hours at another job, then work at a nightclub on the weekends and I produce in my spare time and I have two kids so I don’t want to hear you turn down work. One of the greatest compliments I’ve had in years is my mother in law came up to me and she said, “You know what Adam, I’m behind you 110% .I’ve met dreamers before, you are not one of them. I never hear anything negative come out of you.
I never drink unless I have a guest over. One or two beer, never really did drugs, smoked weed maybe 20 times even though I’m the Union guy, like everybody figures I must be a chronic right. I wasn’t a big drinker in high school ‘cause I used to box and I was always worried about having to fight someone, small town people always wanted to fight the boxer all the time so I never drank because of that and I was always big on trying to pick up chicks, I was never good at it, but I tried, right? Maybe ‘cause I didn’t drink enough or didn’t drink enough with them (laughs). I’ve been to these huge cannabis rallies right, where there is like 5,000 people high and you don’t see the same reaction they see on booze.
ADAM SCORGIE
I’m still in debt from the Union. Netflix gives you $20,000.00 and then own it for two years and they can screen it as many times as they want. Two million people could watch it and it doesn’t matter, you still only get $20,000.00 My boxing coach was amazing and really showed me that I could push harder than I thought I could. To be able to get in that ring and go toe to toe. It feels like life or death, it’s like man, that guy would have just killed me. If it was a street fight, I’d be dead.
Whenever I meet young film makers, they’re like, “Well I want to go try LA for a year and I’ll see how that goes”, and I’m like, don’t bother and their like, “What do you mean?”, and I’m like, well go for the experience, it’ll be fun, go live in LA, but if you’re going to try for a year, you’re not going to make it.
If you wanna keep it out of the hands of kids and keep it protected all the more reason it should be controlled because then your know where their getting it, you know what’s in it, you know who their getting it from. The “gateway thing” comes from when you go to these drug dealers and they sell everything ‘cause almost all the guys I knew that sold drugs they started selling pot and then they got coke and they got into ecstasy because a hippie who smokes weed, he’s going to order an ounce and he’s good for a couple weeks right. A guy does coke, he’ll be back six times in a night. Most people are doing some kind of drug nowadays right. They always say I don’t do any drug as they’re pounding their Starbucks. I’m like really “When’s the last time you went a day without caffeine?” I don’t scare easy, I mean I grew up in a night club around MC clubs in Kelowna.
Probably the darkest hour was I already sunk all this money and borrowed money from my Dad to make the film so at this point, the only way to even get him any money back would be I had to finish and I remember my wife was like six or seven months pregnant and we had negative $400.00 in my account.
I look at my beautiful little daughter and someone wronged her and they knew who it was there would be no filing affidavits and going through crap like that, there just, it would not happen for me.
When somebody else is threatened without knowing someone’s profession, they’re doing something right. Because the only reason why someone trash talks, if someone really sucks, I mean, I know when I meet other guys who are aspiring film makers and their complete boneheads, like, I don’t ever say anything bad about them because I’m like, you talk to them for 20 minutes and he doesn’t know what’s going on, I don’t need to trash talk him.
It’s more than making money or being cool in this career, when you have a great thought provoking film- it lives long past you.
Cokeanagan they call it, there’s so much blow here, ecstasy, I was around all that s**t from a super young age, I was doing coat check for my Dad when I was 15, seeing people coked out of their brains and drinking. Fall 2012
Passion is infectious.
I’m a film maker from Kelowna, not rich, I’m no celebrity, I’m not special, I just, I know that I love to take people on a journey through a ninety minute feature, that’s my passion.

Unforgettable Moments!
Pandora Concept Store, Orchard Park Mall, Kelowna They are famous for their charm bracelets, but there is so much more to Danish jewellery brand Pandora. On June 29th Kelowna welcomed the very first Pandora Concept Store in the interior of BC. Owner Lyle Hance, who used to live and work in Kelowna, owns and operates several Pandora stores and Concept Stores in Alberta, Ontario and now BC. “With having lived and worked in Kelowna, I am glad to be back and able to make Kelowna and area a little more charming.” “All of our products are handmade”, Hance says. “Some companies mass produce their products, but at Pandora up to 40 expert hands touch each piece, and we have more than 3,000 designs!” The quality really shines through, whether in a classic, yet contemporary charm bracelet featuring a variety of silver, gold and Murano glass charms; or in the collection of matching earring, bracelet, ring sets and watches or the new 18k gold LovePods featuring brilliant-cut, hand set diamonds. But it is not simply about buying jewellery - with Pandora you can become your own designer. For earrings customers can choose from a variety of posts, stones and accessories to create their own design, or get the ring upon ring system where a ring can be worn alone or you can stack them to create various sizes and designs. “Pandora is all about creating your own story, your own moments,” says Hance, “inspiring women to express their individuality. All women have their individual stories to tell – a personal collection of special moments that makes them who they are. That is why we celebrate these moments. That is why we say these moments are unforgettable. Drop by Pandora`s Orchard Park location, visit PANDORA.net for more information and stay up-to-date on Facebook and Twitter. Beef and Mushroom Stew in Bread Bowl A classic stew made with caramelized onions, vegetables and your favorite red wine. It would also work to add barley or lentils during the last 30 minutes of cooking. We love to serve this in a bread and then tear the gravy soaked bread to mop up our bowls. Fall comfort food!

Pumpkin Pie with Nutty Crust
Why wait for Thanksgiving when you can easily whip this up and make the house smell fabulous and spiced?
Wine pairing: Misconduct Misfit Crust: 1 cup of your favorite nuts- pecans, walnuts or almonds are usually what we use- toasted and finely chopped. 1 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs ¼ cup sugar ¼ cup melted butter Combine and press into a deep 10” pie plate. Refrigerate while you make the filling.
Beer pairing: Cannery Brewing Naramata Nut Brown Ale Filling: 3 large eggs 14 oz pumpkin puree 1 can evaporated milk 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp each of cinnamon and ginger. ¼ tsp each, salt, grated nutmeg and ground cloves.
Mix well, Pour into prepared shell and bake at 350 for 1 hour.
1. Season the beef well with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large heavy-bottomed pot until hot and add the beef to the pot. Cook until browned on all sides, about 6 minutes. (you may have to do this in batches) transfer to a platter. 2. Add the onions to the pot and season with salt and pepper. Lower the heat to medium and cook, stirring for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Add the celery, carrots and garlic. Cook, stirring for 5 minutes, until the onions begin to caramelize. Add the fresh and dried mushrooms, thyme and the bay leaves and cook for a few more minutes. 3. Return the beef to the pot. Pour in the broth and wine and bring to a boil then reduce and simmer until the meat is fork tender, 1½ - 2 hours. 4. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the meat to a platter and cover with foil. Bring the liquid to a boil over high heat. Let boil for 10 minutes, to thicken, skimming any scum that rises to the surface. Add the peas and boil until they are heated through. 5. Discard the thyme and bay leaves. Correct the seasoning and return the meat to the pot to heat it through. 6. Serve, topped with parsley (we served ours in a toasted then hollowed out sour dough bread)! Fall 2012

the Art of Doug Alcock From the top of a mountain, in between two major lakes in the heart of the Okanagan Valley an anvil rings. Found elements nest with forged and fabricated steel, creating metal sculpture with a heart beat...
T
his feels – different. We have just arrived at the entrance to Doug Alcock’s property in Vernon, but it seems we have entered a new world. A minute ago we passed the Predator Ridge Golf Course, when suddenly the paved road turned into a gravel street. Some rusty artifacts then unmistakably pointed to the blacksmith’s well-hidden driveway; and we left ... the present.
The driveway leads through a forested area, with little clearings along the way, giving the numerous steel objects an almost natural frame. Old bikes, cart wheels, pumps, even the remains of a vintage car, all showing the patina of oblivion. Squirrels and a deer cross our path, we see horses and chickens, passing some cabin structures, before the trees and shrubs suddenly open up. We have arrived! But where are we? The house we are looking at, the trees, a small pond overrun with weeds and wildflowers, seem to have arisen from J.R.R. Tolkin’s vivid imagination. Steps announce the Master’s arrival ...
“Welcome, glad you made it,” Doug Alcock and his dog greet us. Dressed in black, with one of his signature hats, bright eyes and a welcoming smile, we now have a more rounded off picture. What else did we expect? No, this is him, this is Doug! Shaping metal has been his daily work for decades. A learned metal worker, Doug Alcock has always been fascinated by how steel is made malleable by fire. Blackmsith work is part of the history of this country. It was once a necessary trade when wagons, horse tack, and artillery equipment were needed. Don’t we all picture the Old (and wild) West when we hear “blacksmith”? So did Doug, and for many years his sculptures have drawn from the cowboy culture. Using relics of a bygone era like spurs, tools, farm equipment and even real guns he would find in antique stores, garage sales and on

auctions; he created and still creates pieces precharged with energy from their mysterious past. “It’s like going back in time,” Doug explains. “Whenever I find one of these old relics, works of art in their own right, it inspires me to explore more about the ancient craft of blacksmithing.” By now we have arrived at his main studio. Or better, workshop. Some of his machines and tools must have seen the turn of a century twice. It feels like in an open-air museum. Fascinating. “My family is from the Okanagan, I grew up in the area and purchased this property 33 years ago. Back then there was no golf course, no paved road. But I don’t mind having Predator Ridge as my neighbours now, not at all. They are very supportive and some of my best clients.”
Predator Ridge not only acquired Doug Alcock’s large forged sculpture “The Quiver,” which calls to mind both the native population that once lived upon “the commonage” (the area that is now “Commonage Road” was used by first nations and settlers for common grazing of stock) and the golf bag.
Although our lifestyles are miles apart, we share a strong sense of community.”
The developers also hired him for forged steel elements in their show homes. “I have my best clients right in front of my studio,” Doug explains. “It’s a short commute to install work. 66

unique architectural details, wine cellar gates or sculptures. I also teamed up with fellow artist David Montpetit, who you just recently had in your magazine. The fragility of the glass provides an engaging dynamic for my rough forged steel sculptures. So whether you are a fan of cowboy culture artwork, looking for a contemporary sculpture or have some ideas of your own and need someone to bring it to life, Doug Alcock can facilitate.
From the heirloom quality of his heavy timber architectural surroundings that Alcock lives and works under the shadow of, to the intimacy of detail found in his metalwork; everything resonates with the dignity of hand lablour and hand tools. “Right now I work mainly on commissions. I have many clients who want
What an experience! We are on our way out, passing what now has a different meaning to us. The moment we reach the paved road, pass the Predator Ridge sign and see the first Bentley, we know we are back. Thank you Doug, it was a real pleasure meeting you!

PLUMBERS
Rooted in Excellence
It’s midnight, you have just arrived at home, and as you head to the washroom to freshen up before bed, you realize things are not going your way tonight. It’s not going to be as simple as washing your face, brushing your teeth and heading to bed to relax. Instead, it seems that the very drains that are mean to transport soiled water and debris out of your home are in fact moving in the opposite direction. Stricken with panic you run for the plunger and try your best but sadly to no avail. What can you do? You are not trained for this. Its midnight! Thankfully, you are not the first person this has happened to and there is a solution!
F
or the past eighteen years in Kelowna and throughout the Okanagan Valley Ken Seinen and his team at Roto-Rooter Plumbers have been taking care of situations precisely like this.
odds and ends he found and repurposed for a very specific task. The machine consisted of a 1/6 horsepower Maytag washing machine motor, the wheels from a set of roller skates and a 3/8” cable utilized to rotate some blades.
But let’s turn back the clock a bit and go back to where it all started. Almost eighty years ago a gentleman named Samuel Blanc developed an awkward looking machine. A machine that was composed of
Making use of a combination of distinctive blades the machine was capable of cutting stubborn tree roots out of buried sewer lines. Astonishingly, this could be done without any digging. One year later Samuel’s wife Lettie coined the term “Roto-Rooter,” and a new era of plumbing came to fruition. Originally founded in 1935 Roto-Rooter is now the largest provider of plumbing and drain cleaning services throughout North America. With a rich history of innovation and a feverish dedication their customers they have continued to offer an ever expanding variety of repair and maintenance services in both the commercial and residential sector. Locally, Roto-Rooter Plumbers proudly serves the Okanagan Valley, offering 24 hour emergency service for over thirty years, as well as the repair and replacement of sewers and drains, faucets, sinks, toilets, showers and tubs, dish washers, water heaters, sewer and waterline replacements, and the list goes on endlessly. Many commercial property managers use their services, as do other plumbers.

A lot of people love the fall. Yes, the Okanagan is all about the beautiful summers and the winter fun, but the cooler days, earlier sunsets, and a night on the back patio covered in sweatshirts around a warm grill, have their own charm. If there are typical fall wines, they should provide a sense of earth and minerality, spice or warmth. which to me pairs best with the crisp fall air, scent of fallen leaves and transition to more hearty cuisine!
Haywire 2010 Pinot Noir After going Haywire ([hey-wahyuhr]: “wire once used for baling hay, which tended to tangle in a chaotic way”) for two years, Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie opened their Okanagan winery this summer. They picked the name Haywire as it describes their transition from city slickers to farmers to winery owners. Situated in Summerland at Okanagan Crush Pad , the Haywire Team consists of Michael Bartier, who works with David Scholefield and consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini from Italy. The 2010 Haywire Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir from the Wise Brothers Secrest Mountain Vineyard in Oliver. The late ripening and warm fall of 2010 allowed excellent flavour development with a nice peppery character, with the addition of strawberry and cherry along with subtle herbaceous hints which makes it the ideal fall wine. It has a fresh finish with light tannins and is meant for near term consumption. Food pairing: A Pinot Noir really is a natural match with the heartier, earthy flavoured food during fall season. Our food editor recommended dishes with ingredients such as mushrooms and truffles, so we decided for a thin-crust mushroom spinach pizza. A perfect match!

Young & Wyse 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Stephen Wyse (a very familiar surname in the Okanagan’s wine circles; Jim Wyse, who started the Burrowing Owl Winery, is Stephen’s father) and his partner Michelle Young decided to embark upon their dream of owning and running their own family winery. They opened “Young & Wyse” a little more than 2 years ago close to the US border in Osoyoos. They now grow Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. A recent Silver Medal winner at the 2012 All Canadian Wine Championships, the 2010 Young & Wyse Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a late-starting and cool-summered 2010 growing season. Our first impression was a simple “wow”. This Cab-Sav has a unique savoury flavour, with aromas of, well, Christmas spices (I guess it is nutmeg that comes to mind), black currant, blueberry, and notes of tobacco leaves and mocha. It was bottled without fining or filtration. As for the food pairing, the “King of Red Wine Grapes” goes well with red meats, lamb, strong-flavored cheese, and dark chocolates. We were fortunate enough to enjoy it with some excellent Lamb Chops with Frizzled Herbs. A side-note: Even though the wine is drinking well, it will definitely get better with age. We would say cellar it for at least another 8-12 months.

Nichol Vineyard 2009 Syrah Hold your breath, you’re about to learn something! Did you know that Nichol Vineyards in Naramata is actually home to the first commercial planting of Syrah and St. Laurent in Canada? Or that they planted the first Syrah at the estate in 1989 with the balance of the sites 5.5 acres being planted in 1990? How about the fact that it has garnered numerous awards and accolades across Canada, including at the All Canadian Wine Competition, Northwest Wine Summit, and the Canadian Wine Awards. Or that world renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson named the Nichol Vineyard Syrah among her top 25 out of more than 100 BC wines tasted on her first visit to the Okanagan in 2009? See we told you, you’d learn something! But why did we pick this Syrah as our recommendation for fall? Well, fall is very much a transitional season, the summer is gone but it is not winter yet. A Syrah has a certain spicy note that is synonymous with the season, but does not have the heaviness you want in winter weather. The 2009 Nichol Vineyard Syrah is a perfect example. Handpicked on the 10th of October, earlier than usual but welltimed as it went to -9 C later in the week, it has spicy black cherry fruit aromas and layers of herbs and smoky black pepper. What we found out: Use an aerator and let it rest for 10 or 15 minutes. A recommendation by the winemaker is that there is a good drinking window by the fall of next year with another 5 to 8 years ahead of it. In other words .. drink between 2012-2020! Retail: $35.00 Alc./Vol.: 13.5%

Desert Hills 2011 Gewürztraminer Yes, we know – you’ve always wondered what this hard to pronounce word actually means. “Gewürz” means “spice” in German and is the main characteristic of this wine. “Traminer” stands for “coming from Tramin,” a small city in South Tyrol in northern Italy where the grape comes from. So Gewürztraminer, first grown in Alsace around the 19th century, is the name of a grape but also the name of the wine made from the grape! A Gewürztraminer is one of the best wines for “this time of the year”. It has enough fruit and zest to remember the beautiful Okanagan summer, and is spicy with a medium body to warm you up on the cooler nights of fall. Desert Hills Winery in Oliver, is family owned and operated. Located on the Black Sage Bench, it opened its doors in 2003 and just launched a nice new label this spring. Their 2011 Desert Hills Gewürztraminer is best described as “floral”. Think lychee, think rose petals, and maybe a hint of ginger? It is spicy and crisp, giving this juicy Gewürz a long and cleansing finish. As for a food pairing: Some people may think that because of its spicy nature it would complement other spicy foods, but that may set your mouth on fire. We would pair it with turkey or duck, or try some typical German foods such as pork chops, roasted ham and veal. The Gewürztraminer is also popular as dessert wine. Try it with strong cheeses and fresh fruit. Oh, and make sure that the serving temperature is around 10ºC! You’re welcome!
