and welcome to our 9th issue, the first edition in our third year. Really? Really! Time flies... We always strive to improve the magazine with every issue, introduce new columns, polish the layout and make sure ICON offers something for everyone. Starting with this issue we are very excited to have Kelowna’s very own cartoonist, Marzio Manderioli, on board. Marzio will share his “satirical vein” with us, depicting the Okanagan, the people and happenings, in his fantastic cartoons. Welcome on board, Marzio! Furthermore, we are extremely happy to welcome chef Michael Lyon as our new food editor. Michael was the first chef in history to win back to back Gold Medal Plates, a nationwide culinary competition, and is considered to be one of Canada’s top chefs. He will not only introduce some of Canada’s best chefs, but will have them share their recipes and little secrets with us! All our “foodie” readers will also welcome this issue’s raffle - you can win a set of 3 knives, valued at $700, from KnifeWear, Kelowna! Woohoo! Make sure to visit their store on 2983 Pandosy Street.

What better way to take in all of the fantastic scenery than from the comfort of your own home? Your living room couch, your deck maybe, or perhaps from your pool?
In the foyer, directly beneath a stunning modern chandelier one is immediately drawn towards the massive wall of windows ahead. Incredible vistas of the entire Okanagan Valley lay ahead almost dwarfing the beauty of what lays around you in this exquisite custom home.
Slowly ascending the roads leading to the home perched on the hillside at 746 Kuipers Crescent it is fairly obvious the home will offer monumental views. It is not until the front door is opened however, that one can truly

High ceilings and copious amounts of natural light provided by massive windows overlooking the valley create a truly airy and open atmosphere while the sounds of an enormous modern water feature create a natural ambiance. Moving left we find ourselves in an impeccable contemporary kitchen. Ultra high gloss cabinetry accompanied by thick seamless granite, simple hardware and sexy stainless steel appliances finish off the edgy modern look. Just beyond is a fully equipped butler’s kitchen complete with wine storage in the form of racks as well as a refrigerated unit. With plenty of prep space, granite abounding, an extra fridge and access to the patio barbecuing area this is the perfect area to prepare one of those summer night feasts we all look forward too so much. Making our way through the door onto the deck, we are met with an outdoor dining area as well as the full magnitude of the vistas before us. Simple posts and a glass railing frame an expansive wrap around area providing

A sumptuous king size bed entices you to jump in and stay a while, maybe watch a flick or two in complete tranquillity. Just off of the bedroom area is an enormous ensuite, again stunning seamless granite abounds, in floor heating warms your toes, and modern fixtures accent the space. In the corner an enormous steam shower with multiple heads seems to float in a bed of river rocks, a clever design that once again brings nature into the home. If the shower wasn’t enough, in the opposite corner, a massive soaker tub capable of hosting more than just a couple bodies offers views to the North and West across the lake. It is the perfect place to soak after a long day at the office. 14

“A properly fitted suit or sport jacket is back in a big way.”
G
uys who want to wear the hippest and most fashion forward trends out there are turning to real clothing to get their style fix. Suits and sport jackets from Hugo Boss Black, Tombolini and Versace are fashionable, functional and very modern. Jackets are shorter in length with higher arm holes and narrower lapels to give them a contemporary fit and lots of style. They are much more than a tired old business suit with no shape or flavour. Then we get to the really important part – making it fit perfectly. That is the real difference at MacDermott’s. We offer complimentary, in-house tailoring to custom fit your suit. And how many guys can really just walk into a suit and have it be just right? Not many. You may need the sleeves shortened or lengthened, arm holes deepened, the body tapered or the seat taken in. We do that. We take great pride in the attention to every detail of how the suit fits and we make sure it’s right in every way. Start with a good suit, then make it great when you get a perfect fit. PROOF OF HEAVEN A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander “Consciousness is the most profound mystery in the universe.” Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon for the past 25 years, Alexander knew that near death experiences may feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by our brains under extreme stress. Then, in the predawn hours of November 10, 2008, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare and mysterious bacterial meningitis-encephalitis of unknown cause, driving him into a coma. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. He spent a week in coma on a ventilator, his prospects for survival diminishing rapidly. On the seventh day however, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes suddenly popped open. To everyone’s surprise, he started to awaken. A medical miracle, but the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. Memories of his life had been completely deleted while comatose, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic journey where he encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of superphysical existence. His older son advised him to write down everything he could remember about his odyssey, before he read anything about near-death experiences, physics or cosmology. Six weeks later, he completed his initial recording of the remarkable journey, totalling over 20,000 words in length. Only then he started reading,
and was astonished by the insights his journey brought to the world’s literature on near-death experiences, and to all phenomena of extended consciousness. His experience clearly revealed that we are conscious in spite of our brain. That, in fact, consciousness is at the root of all existence. Dr Alexander has been blessed with a complete recovery, and his book will clearly polarize audiences and stir up controversy. It will most likely prompt one of two responses. Either you believe in it, or not. No doubt that stories about an after-life touch on the most basic of human needs, where we all want there to be something more, something beyond death. So is it true? We are not here to judge, but there is something interesting happening. Proof of Heaven is garnering support from unlikely sources: academics. PROOF OF HEAVEN Paperback: 208 pages Publisher: Simon & Schuster ISBN-10: 1451695195 ISBN-13: 978-1451695199
About the Author Dr. Eben Alexander III, born 1953 in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been an academic neurosurgeon for the last 25 years, including almost 15 years at The Brigham & Women’s Hospital, the Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Over his academic career he authored or co-authored over 150 chapters and papers in peer reviewed journals, and made over 200 presentations at conferences and medical centers around the world. 18

The Gentleman
by Dr. Christian Brix
They should have taught you this in school....
18 things every gentleman should have... The well-rounded gentleman will see value in the stuff and the skills we have presented below. These items are required to impress and inspire. Can you be a man without them? Of course. Remember however, that our goal is to get men to a new level of class and sophistication...this stuff will help! Get these: Well-cut dark suit - a great suit comes in handy for a variety of events and always impresses if it fits right. Simple wine opener - we know about all the fancy contraptions aimed at making the opening of a bottle of wine simpler, but nothing compares to the simple old-school method. Weekend shoulder bag - nothing says class better when travelling than a nice canvas or leather bag. Lose the back pack! Cast iron skillet - the true beauty of the never-washed cast iron pan can only be experienced through the taste buds. Get one. NEW underwear - the condition of your underwear usually reflects the condition of your love life. Underwear can be cheap... If yours has holes, it’s time to move on. A signature dish - guys, you have to have a “go to” dish that you can make for a date to impress. Make sure it’s healthy, fresh, delicious, and try to make sure it doesn’t include hot dogs. Jumper cables - own some, and know how to use them. An investment - put something away every month in an investment. You may not be able to afford a lot, but at least you can say you have a portfolio! A nice pair of dress shoes - there is nothing that can ruin an outfit more than ratty, scuffed, or dirty shoes. Get one nice pair and keep them that way! Nice pen - a nice pen always impresses when pulled out. It seems one is more creative when writing with a great pen. A place to think - every man needs a place to go when he wants to clear his head. Find a spot like that, and go there when you need to gain some perspective. Money clip/thin wallet - we really don’t need the double cheeseburger sized wallets any more. Keep it slick and lean. Dark denim jeans - these are perfect for looking either dressed up, or dressed down. They are so versatile and a key piece of any gentleman’s wardrobe. A good Knife - a great quality chef’s knife is an absolute must for any guy.
A toy - you need a “toy” that is truly just for you, something you really love, and not necessarily practical at all! It might be a sports car, a gorgeous guitar, a bike, or even a fishing rod. The ability to change a tire - yes, you HAVE to know how to change a tire. Seriously. Your own scent - go buy some cologne. That being said, make sure it is scent that suits you and you actually enjoy. Wear it, but don’t bathe in it! Sharp blazer - you can dress-up any outfit by throwing on a great simple blazer. This is also a must in your wardrobe because it is the quickest and easiest way to sharpen your look. It was Yves Saint-Laurent who said “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Being the stylish gentleman is more than just clothing and toys. Your “style” is really about what you present and who you are. Have some fun with it!

HAVE A
HEALTHY NEW YEAR
A few tips to start off the New Year the right way
high levels of heart disease across the world? For a healthier protein option stock up on seafood, it is great for a healthy heart and (specifically mackerel, sardines, fresh tuna and salmon) an excellent source of omega-3 fats (which help to protect against heart disease).
Don’t cut out food groups!
Try the Mediterranean diet, known as one of the world’s healthiest diets embracing the idea of all things in moderation. Not only does it feature carbs, dairy and wine, but one of its particular characteristics is its abundant use of olive oil.
Drinks with meals!
Yes, we know the dangers alcohol poses to our health, but drinking wine (particularly red) in moderation (and with a meal) does have its health benefits. It will help to increase good cholesterol and cuts the risk of a heart disease.
Fruit & Veggies!
Have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Add dried fruit to breakfast cereal and add vegetables to your pasta sauces, curries, etc.
Stay fit ... Exercise!
Eat the right stuff... Go Fresh!
Pre-made and processed foods are often packed with salt, sugar and additives which are damaging to our health. It is much better to go for fresh with seasonal produce for the healthiest cuisine. We have great local markets to pick up fresh goods! Why not try to grow your own veggies or fruit in your garden?
Research shows that regular daily activity may be more effective than sporadic workouts. Whether it’s walking on the treadmill, cycling, swimming, jogging, or some other exercise that raises your heart rate, exercise is the core secret of your health. So ditch the car once in a while and hop on your bike or walk, and take the stairs rather than using an elevator! It will also help to clear your mind and get your ideas in order reducing tension and stress.
Yoga!
Fish over meat!
Did you know that red meat is one of the main reasons for the
Yoga can hardly be considered a trend. It has been around for more than 10,000 years and is practised by millions of people worldwide for perfect physical and emotional health. Individuals who practice Yoga at least 3 times per week have been reported to feel less depressed and show an overall sense of fulfilment. So – why not give it a try?
Free Up Mental Space!
Research suggests that picturing a broom sweeping away unnecessary details—like last month’s expense report—can boost memory. Improving your mood is just as easy.
Give up smoking!
C’mon, this one is a given! Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
Get more sleep!
High quality sleep is important and a 20

cornerstone of good health. And we don’t mean sleeping pills or taking alcohol or drugs. Maybe a larger bed or even sleeping in separate rooms due to snoring or different sleep/wake schedules. Avoid naps if you have insomnia.
Re-invent Yourself! Set new goals!
It’s a new year, so why not find yourself a new hobby, set a new goal? Find some time to do something you’ve always wanted to do each and every day, even if it’s something really insignificant. It is something positive to enjoy and may even lead to new opportunities.
Get a new wardrobe!
Do it! Be willing to try a different look and see if you can reinvent yourself. Nothing says a new you like new clothes. But before you go on a wild shopping spree get rid of your old clothes. Sort out things you haven’t worn for some time and bring them to the Salvation Army, Big Brothers, Big Sisters or a consignment store. Then try new styles and different colours. Guys, how about a cool new shirt, nice pants, colourful socks? Wayne at MacDermott’s will take great care of you. Sometimes, wearing a splash of colour can brighten your day and make you feel special. Ladies, have a look at our Trend Pages. Something you like? Go and get it.
Switch up your hairstyle!
Now that you’ve got a whole new wardrobe, what about a new do! Let everyone you meet comment on your look – it’s a great way to boost your self-esteem!
Redecorate!
When was the last time you changed anything in your apartment or house? You don’t have to tear down walls. Sometimes little things make a big difference. Maybe it is time for a fresh new colour, new pictures, some new cushions or to change a few accessories. Redecorating is fun, and its always nice coming home to a fresh new setup! These are just a few tips ... to make it a Healthy Year!

If you’re not quite sure what URBAN FARE is all about, well … then you are in for quite a treat! Grocery shopping can be a fairly mundane, uninspired and often annoying experience yet it is a necessary endeavour.
W
hat if all of that could change? What if your local grocery store was more of a destination than a boring place filled with row upon row of aisles filled with boxes, bags and bottles?
Your one stop shop for premium grade products!
What if every time you went grocery shopping it could be an adventure, an exercise in creativity and an opportunity to learn about local products, produce and producers? That is precisely what this place is all about! At URBAN FARE they are “ambassadors for the love of food, with a passion for the gourmet” and because of that, anyone can walk through the doors of this place and instantly become a foodie or reignite a flame long ago extinguished by the monotonous routine which so often takes over. The difference is apparent the moment you set foot in this grocery store, visually striking is an understatement!
“Where else can you choose between more than 200 cheeses and get exotic meats such as crocodile, camel and wild boar?”

developed over the years, it was only a matter of convincing the artists and their representatives that these secondary and tertiary markets were a viable stream of additional revenue.
By the way…if Donalda sounds familiar to you…you are most likely a Battle Star Galactica fan and have been cruising the net trying to find out all the fun facts about Cylon Number 6 a.k.a Tricia Helfer, the beautiful Canadian Model and actress who Jim actually took the bus to school with every day.
After programming several smash hit events such as KISS, Maroon 5 & Train, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna and Reba and creating a template that can be repurposed Invictus Entertainment has achieved incredible success with top notch acts in some of the most obscure markets you can think of; Prince George, Dawson Creek, Lethbridge or even a monster Bob Dylan show in Lloydminster to name just a few.
Back to the story at hand…it’s no surprise then that in 2007 after experiencing the hustle and bustle of the big city, rocking the agent lifestyle, being a partner in the Cressman Sakamoto Agency, and constantly operating in a fast paced hectic environment Jim, who is now married and a father was drawn to the small town of Penticton, in the Okanagan. Not quite rural, yet small enough, beautiful and slow paced, Penticton is an amazing place to enjoy a family life as well as easily run a business, all the while offering access to nearby Kelowna International Airport if any sort of globetrotting is in order. As to June 1st 2012, when the Cressman Sakamoto Agency was amicably dissolved and its name changed to the Invictus Entertainment Group, Jim has based operations in Penticton and is now the head of this newly formed diversified entertainment group. Have you ever wondered how and why it is that huge names like Keith Urban get into tiny markets like Penticton? Well that’s one of the integral aspects of what Invictus Entertainment Group does, supplying A+ level shows to secondary and tertiary markets and making sure they rock your socks off. With a proven track record, a great reputation and the relationships Mr. Cressman has
Winter 2013
But that’s not all they do at Invictus, this is a company that also acts as an agency for some pretty incredible talent. Ever heard of George Canyon? Terri Clark? Emerson Drive? How about Aaron Pritchett or One More Girl! That’s right! All of these big name artists are part of the roster at Invictus Entertainment Group based in little old Okanagan! Jim and the Invictus Entertainment Group are dedicated to all of the artists on their roster and have constantly evolved in order extract a living from the “intrinsic gift of art” that they all possess. He is well known for being extremely candid with anyone that he represents, often taking the initiative to break bad news in an effort to manage expectations and create motivation. Jim considers himself a champion of the art of those he represents and continually assumes the position of ‘positive reinforcer’.
This hot shot agent to the stars and former radio personality came to take part in the music industry from a very unlikely background, but then again, what good story ever starts with a likely beginning?
Well, there you have it ladies and gentleman! Little did you know…our sleepy little Okanagan Valley is actually a hub for national entertainment programming, artist representation and the new home of Invictus Entertainment Group! www.iegroup.ca

Hollywood in the Okanagan

An interview with Jon Summerland If you were out and about cruising around the Okanagan last summer you may well have run into a movie set. Large caravans of white trucks set up on location, film crews running around and entire neighbourhoods shut down and loaded with actors; special lighting as well as directors and producers shouting out orders. It was a pretty cool vibe, something that you wouldn’t typically associate with the Okanagan, but it really seems as though the valley is quickly becoming a destination in terms of the motion picture industry.
This
however, would not have been the case without the hard work and dedication of our Okanagan Film Commissioner, so we decided to have a chat with Jon Summerland and get a little bit of perspective from a professional. Icon: Jon thank you for taking the time to answer some of our questions! First off, I understand that you were a Locations Manager in Vancouver for 17 years? Why did you decide to leave the Lower Mainland and come to the Okanagan as our Film Commissioner? Jon: The film industry is like a vocation not really a job. It’s 24/7. I was at the birth of my first daughter and the whole time I was there all I could think about was whether or not my
30
ICON OKANAGAN
www.icon-okanagan.com
director was paying attention to the location photos I’d sent him earlier that day. Next thing you know I was staring into the eyes of my daughter and it all changed. I couldn’t give my life to my job. For the next 2 years I tried, but I only saw my daughter while she was asleep. I needed to find balance. The Okanagan Film Commission job opened up and we moved out here to a better life just as my second daughter was born. Icon: Could you please tell us a bit about the Okanagan Film Commission and exactly what it is that you and your colleagues do? It seems you have had some real success in recent years attracting larger budget films to the Okanagan. Seeing “Paramount Pictures” trucks lined up along Abbott Street in Kelowna was a pretty exciting experience, it’s something you’d expect to see in Hollywood
but not on your drive into work in the morning. How do you draw attention to our small community and get us on the radar for these major productions?
Jon: Beyond attending tradeshows all over Canada and North America, I contact the vast list of connections I’ve made throughout my years as a Locations Manager. We are constantly searching for films in early stages of production. We’re Lurkers on Twitter, Facebook and IMDB and are always looking for who just got hired to direct what film or what book just got optioned to film, etc. With that information we can build the producers an incentive package to atWinter 2013
tract them here early on. I’m working on productions that won’t shoot for 3 years. We get them early before they start even location scouting, reading and breaking down many scripts. Also since we have developed a great crew database and have the infrastructure (all those trucks you’re talking about) in the valley we have more to offer than most other regions. Add all the savings of not having to put all your crew in hotels and the extra 6% labour based tax incentive to production for filming anywhere beyond Hope. It’s a winning combination for production. We have a number of successful productions in the past years. That success attracts others. Icon: Could you tell us what films you were able to draw into the valley and how that all came to fruition? Jon: There have been so many films. But the shiny ones and the ones that shot entirely in the Okanagan are: Mummy 3, Big Year, Gunless, Flicka 3, No Tell Motel, A Mother’s Nightmare, Hockey Odyssey, Anything But Christmas, Once Upon A Time, Star Gate Atlantis, Saadi Vakhri hai Shaan, Pressed, Tora and about 30 + reality shows including Bachelor
Winter 2013
Canada, The real Housewives of Vancouver , Millionaire Matchmaker and a plethora of international highbudget commercials. Icon: Are these productions making use of local talent and employing locals? With the way things have been the past few years this is a very interesting way to potentially stimulate our local economy! Jon: It’s difficult to get the union films to hire locally but all the independent films have taken advantage of all things local. It’s the only way they can make their films work. Our goal is to have about 6 independent films per year to keep a full-time crew employed. We would also like to have a couple of the big blockbusters here as well. Those are the ones the general public like to see because they bring the stars and all the glitz. The hotels and resort owners like the big ones as well because they snap up every room in town. They usually bring a crew of 300-plus and still hire about 25 locals. The money is spread around everywhere. Everything from port-o-potties, lumber suppliers, drycleaners, clothing stores new and used (for wardrobe), coffee houses, restaurants, etc. will experience high revenue while the movies are in town. We would also like to continue to attract all the reality TV and commercials. They are all low maintenance and have more money to spend. Icon: What can we look forward to in the coming months and years as far as the local film industry goes? I can tell you have been hard at work and I don’t expect that you will be slowing
Jon Summerland
down anytime soon! Jon: Besides a possible studio, which means a TV series and full-time work, we are currently working on a couple of big budget films that we are close to landing for the new year. There are also a pile of independent film scripts, 16 deep, lying on my desk. We could very well have 6 or 7 indies next year. I’d like to mention as well that at the OFC we also work with the Animation and Gaming industries and in the last 2 years we have seen unprecedented growth in that industry. We had the BBC’s Badly Drawn Roy produced here by Lizard Brain Animation and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Bardel Entertainment to mention only a couple. We are working with big guns Sony Pictures, Imageworks and Electronic Arts to take on some of their back end productions. Animation/Gaming hire a lot of kids at great wages. These are industries that the Okanagan should embrace and try to attract here. They are all clean and sustainable. Who doesn’t watch TV or play games? Icon: Thank you again for your time Jon! It has been a pleasure speaking with you and learning about this incredible industry and the OFC.

With the incredible success of its very first year, this United Way fundraiser aimed at young professionals returned this year and went off with a bang! Presented by GenNext and MNP we all enjoyed an amazing evening of entertainment including a seven-piece funk band, an awesome DJ, as well as delicious appetizers! Set in the charming Hotel Eldorado, everyone was dressed to the nines and rocking a variety of masks, from the most ornate to the absurd. As 100% of the proceeds went directly to the United Way of the Central and South Okanagan, this was definitely a worthwhile cause. We can’t wait for next year! Designed & Manufactured in Kelowna
T
here are many things the Okanagan Valley is known for - and now we can add “fashion hub” to the list. In April of 2011 a new brand was launched in Kelowna: GYRstyle. The young company, emerging from an honoured family tradition and proud heritage of industrial machining and manufacturing, offers a unique line of hand bags in several variations of anodized colours and fabrics for every season.
This past February, GYR introduced a new model, a unique and beautiful clutch with an innovative design reflecting the style of their acclaimed handbags with the signature aluminium frame and sliding door. “Our efforts continue as we work to establish the GYRstyle name as a recognized highend brand with a focus on unique design and unprecedented quality.” says Richard, who started the company with his wife Sandra. “The handbag and clutch designs are our flagship products with new products to be introduced as the GYRstyle brand recognition grows.” Lately, the unique handbags and clutches have garnered a lot of attention. Not only were they featured on TV and in several fashion shows, Rosette Luve, the Gold record, Canadian pop star icon, is now representing the brand. “Some Red Carpet exposure for the Academy Awards is in the works as well,” Sandra smiles, “and we have some more celebrities who have contacted us and signalled their interest.” GYRstyle is marketed as a Canadian/North American made brand, and not just that. “We always wanted to support the local industry, making Kelowna a recognized contributor to the fashion industry. We have several local businesses helping us produce components with uncompromising attention to detail and quality.” The use of unique materials and assembly methods will continue with the launch of their latest clutch, a new shoulder bag design and a new handbag in the Spring of 2013. “We will expand the brand to provide products for the male consumer such as belts and wallets, following the successful launch of the current lines,” Richard adds. “With the potential representation in high-end stores such as Neiman Marcus, Holt Renfrew, Saks Fifth Ave, or Barney’s, and the high-end boutiques which already carry our lines, it will greatly increase product awareness and give consumers the opportunity to shift into GYR and feel the real artistry, form and function of our designs.”

HEAVEN HAS NEVER BEEN SO CLOSE Kim Pullen
(
Church & State is based on a concept of balance. A balance between head and heart, between change and tradition.
(
W
hen Kim Pullen founded Church & State Wines in 2004, he had a vision of building a winery that would stand amongst the top 3 in the province. Fast forward 8 years, and it is a goal he can proudly say has been achieved, taking 3rd in BC, and 4th in Canada at the 2012 Canadian Wine Awards.
P
urchasing a 25-acre estate on the Saanich Peninsula in 2003, which had been home to the defunct Victoria Estate Winery, Kim set out to build a winery that would be a producer of premium and super premium wines. Unfortunately, the wine produced by Victoria Estate was sub-par, and costs were out of control. With a bloated staff who were more interested in promoting quality, instead of actually delivering it, and growers who hadn’t been paid in over a year, it was clear that Victoria Estate was wildly out of balance. It was out of this dysfunction that Kim’s concept of Church & State was born. This concept of balance now permeates everything he does, a balance between the head and the heart, between change and tradition. The Okanagan – Fabulous Sun Exposure & Sweeping Views
O
riginally, the winery sourced fruit from independent growers in the Okanagan Valley, and in 2005, Kim purchased Rattlesnake Vineyard, a 15-acre plot on the Golden Mile side of the South Okanagan. Named for the large population of rattlesnakes that pass through the vineyard to the water source below, it was chosen for its fabulous sun exposure and sweeping views of the valley.
T
he next acquisition was the Coyote Bowl Vineyard, which had originally been three contiguous 10-acre orchards, situated A tasting room, and a lounge!along Originally a builtlarge in 1909 gravel bowl on the Black Sage Bench. The first day the interior was taken down to the open studs, keeping Kim walked the property, he noticed a coyote skirting the botthe original structure to build around it. tom edge of the bowl, a sight he had never seen before – the
name became instantly obvious: Coyote Bowl.
I
t would be this vantage point where in 2009 Kim would build his new Okanagan winery, as well as plant some of his highest quality vines, suitable for the Quintessential Bordeaux blend. “Our guiding principle is that you can make great wine only if you have great grapes. Great grapes are produced on the best land, most suitable to the varietal planted and with great attention to detail and timing throughout the planting, growing and harvesting process.“
Q
uintessential, their flagship blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot is grown in the Coyote Bowl vineyard, and in the second vintage of production, the 2006, was awarded Best Red Wine in Canada at the 2009 All-Canadian Wine Championships – a testament to the quality the Coyote Bowl is capable of producing.
T P
he final piece in the vineyard puzzle was the property they now call Bella, the Beautiful One.
lanted shortly after Coyote Bowl, Kim named Bella after his youngest daughter, who at the age of 2 was swooned over by locals on a trip to Italy. “Bella, bella” they would call her, and it was

a name that stuck with Kim when naming this new property. The youngest of the three vineyards, Bella was planted with Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier to produce “TreBella”, their Rhone blend. Drawing inspiration from the Rhône blends of France, TreBella is their interpretation of this timeless style of wine.
B
y 2010, Church & State Wines owned 85-acres of producing vines, and contracted an additional 30-acres, producing between 10,000 and 12,000 cases annually. A wine-centric experience
I
n 2008, Church & State Wines moved its winemaking operations from Victoria to the South Okanagan Valley, acquiring a large cold storage facility, and repurposing it for winemaking. The following summer, in 2009, construction began on the new winery in the Coyote Bowl Vineyard. Built exclusively to produce Church & State’s super-premium tiers, Coyote Bowl blends contemporary west-coast architecture, with a unique sense of place, nestled in the Coyote Bowl Vineyard. With sweeping views across the valley towards the Golden Mile, Kim envisioned this place to offer a more focused, wine-centric experience, where guests could intimately experience the art of winemaking and viticulture in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world.
C
oyote Bowl would be the purest element of Church & State, favouring closer, more peaceful and private spaces than the Brentwood Bay facility. With the expansion of the west patio to include a 28 seat outdoor tasting bar in the summer of 2012, Church & State has been heralded as the two coolest tasting experiences in the Okanagan by wine writer Anthony Gismondi.

LOW PRESSURE by Sandra Brown In this breathless romantic thriller, Bellamy Price hopes that her debut novel, the pseudonymous Low Pressure, will be therapeutic. Price was only 12 years old when her older sister Susan was killed on a stormy Memorial Day. Bellamy’s fear of storms is a legacy of the tornado that destroyed the crime scene as well as her memory of one vital fact that still eludes her... Now, 18 years later, the book becomes an instant sensation, yet it is anything but therapeutic. A sleazy tabloid reporter discovers that the book is based on a real crime and Bellamy’s identity, as well as her dark family secrets are exposed. Unfortunately, those involved in the events eighteen years earlier were not thrilled by the book’s contents. One of them, Denton Carter, Susan’s one-time boyfriend, is first to come under suspicion. He is intent on clearing his name and he needs Bellamy’s sealed memory to do it. However, her safeguarded recollections, once unlocked, pose dangers that neither could have foreseen, placing both their lives in peril. As Bellamy delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Susan’s slaying, she must face new truths about
her sister and other members of her family. Haunted by partial memories, conflicted over her feelings for Dent, but determined to learn the truth, Bellamy won’t stop until she reveals Susan’s killer. Sandra Brown: Low Pressure Paperback: 480 pages Publisher: Grand Central Publishing ISBN-10: 1455501557 ISBN-13: 9781-455501557
That is, unless Susan’s killer finds her first... We have no doubt that Low Pressure will become another bestseller. You will be drawn into the story from the first page on and there is a good chance you may read it all in one day!

The Lady
Be the woman a gentleman adores....
by Lourine Welding
What is it in a woman that makes her want to shape and bend her whole day just to make room for one moment with a guy she likes? We all do that. A group of women in a room all notice when that cute guy walks in. Without doing much, he can get a smile from the toughest female in a crowd. Just because he is from the species we call man.
The lucky card? The old couple whispering over a cup of tea while holding hands didn’t get to be there by chance. They made many choices over the years of preferring one another. Love is mature, it’s a choice and it takes two willing people. Trust is built over time and hearts are shared bit by bit.
You and me… When meeting someone for the first time, be true to your heart. You squander your unique self when you can’t be honest about who you are with the world because you’ve been pretending to be who you think a guy wants you to be. It really is worth the time spent on getting to know ‘you’ well before spending the time to get to know someone else well.
Treating yourself kindly will help you make good decisions. Decisions made out of fear for the pesky reasons such as: ‘What if there is no one else that will pay attention to me?’, ‘What if I run out of time?’ are bad decisions. Also: pity should not motivate your choices when it comes to men.
Yes no or maybe So it’s all going well and this guy caught your attention. He is therefore not in the ‘no’ box, there is a ‘maybe’ box that most guys fit into if the first impressions were good. The ‘yes’ box is reserved for the real deal. A connection is great, but be smart about substance versus momentary chemistry. Why is that so important?! The bottom line is that men and women truly are different. Gentlemen don’t try to use women. Ladies don’t try to be used. Both men and women want real love and an uplifting relationship. A safe life equation in the world of counterparts is commitment on the man’s part and vulnerability on the lady’s. His commitment should always be an umbrella, big enough to cover her vulnerability. The moment she is more vulnerable than the commitment he is offering, she starts feeling used and underappreciated. Gals, it’s called protecting your heart.
Look for good reasons that are motivating you to be in an “us”. Keep in mind your wholeness at the heart of every decision. A broken person tends to break others. A loving relationship desires for both persons to be celebrated and well. Food for thought…

Mirror mirror Where lays the true beauty of the timeless classics in art or history? Watch them and pay attention to the time and effort that is spent on building a relationship. Too much Hollywood, too much fake tanning, too much cheapening of your body, all those things say to me: Look, I don’t think my heart is all that valuable so just give me any kind of attention and I’ll settle for that. Love yourself and realize that how you treat yourself will shape how you will live later on. As so powerfully put in The Help, “You is smart, you is kind, you is important.” How do I get what I want…? Think beautiful and soft. Be woman. You should be able to remain delightfully inviting to a man worthy of your time. And he should own the intention of wanting to be in the ‘yes’ box. If you tolerate something that you do not want then you are a sucker for self-inflicted conflict or tepid pursuit. Winter 2013

Lifting Your Spirits! Esteem Lingerie, West Kelowna “We have a philosophy in our family; buy the best quality you can afford and take care of it. For the women in our family we also have a 2nd philosophy; always purchase quality in beds, bras and shoes because that is where we spent all of our time!”
I
t was with these philosophies in mind that the “dynamic duo”, the mother-daughter team Florenda and Angela, opened Esteem Lingerie in 2006.
Coming into the shop, one will encounter what appears to be an endless sea of bras. But, don’t worry – the ladies at Esteem are fitting specialists!
Owners Florenda Picket & her daughter Angela O’Brien
The business started with Florenda making custom made bras for women, what she quickly realized was that most women really don’t need custom made bras. What women needed was a place that had a wide enough selection of size and a staff that could educate clients on what is a good fit for their body. Throughout their years in business they have refined their product offerings to the best quality and fit in their price point – with bras range in price from $50 to $200.
“Think about it,” says Angela, “a bra is designed to be the foundation of our outer clothing. The bra can be the difference in whether or not a top fits a woman properly and flatters her figure. Outward appearance aside, women typically wear a bra 10 to 16 hours per day! If it is not comfortable and supportive it can feel like a medieval torture device.” In fitting women Esteem Lingerie strives to find the right fit for each woman regardless of her size. In addition to bras, Esteem Lingerie carries a wide range of panties, shapewear, “spicy lingerie” and nightwear. “We also don’t forget about the men in our lives - we 46

carry Naked Boxer Briefs for men,” Florenda adds. “Made in Canada, their fit and feel is luxurious, yet their quality stands up, wear after wear.” Beautiful, quality underwear aside; what keeps Angela, Florenda and their staff so passionate about what they do is the ability to help women feel great about themselves. They call it the “Esteem Experience”. “We celebrate women for who they are, we encourage them to love the bodies that they have in the here and now.
“We help women find underwear that fits, flatters and is comfortable.”
As for that connection between what we wear and how we feel about ourselves, our philosophy is that every day is beautiful lingerie day! If you start out the day feeling comfortable, supported and beautiful in your lingerie, even if people don’t see your underwear they notice the confidence.” Visit the ladies at Esteem Lingerie and you too will understand why they do more than just lift your spirits!

Are you Prepared to SELL your BUSINESS? by Steve Harvey & Nelson Bayford
Selling your business is a major decision! You have devoted your time, money, and energy to building, running, and operating your business. It may well represent your life’s work. You may have already decided that now is the right time to sell, and you want the very best professional guidance you can get.
!
Selling your business for its highest and best value takes teamwork, research, planning, strategy, preparation, requires TIME, networking and commitment.
to maximize the price that you get for your business In order to prepare a business for sale, you should gather all the information that a potential Buyer will ask for and rely on when making a buying decision. Undertake a thorough review of the company books, and other corporate records and ensure that all are complete and up to date. Similarly, make sure that all tax returns and other government filings, and licenses been completed, filed and are current. Buyers will want to review several items during due diligence. The following is a list of what most buyers want to see:
It is a process, not an event. 1. Will buyers find your business an opportunity worth paying for? 2. Why are you Selling? 3. What are you Selling? 4. How much should you ask? 5. How to keep the process Confidential? 6. How do you Qualify Buyers? 7. How do you launch and navigate the selling process? 8. What’s involved in marketing, negotiating, financing and closing the sale?
The selling of a business will require you to assemble a team that can provide objective advice, not just tell you what you want to hear.

During the sales process, a Seller’s job is to do what he does best, which is to run the business as if he were going to keep it. Your Business Broker’s job is to confidentially market the business, find and screen the Buyers, educate them, negotiate the terms of the sale and provide a buffer for the emotional highs and lows that you will most likely experience. Be prepared to answer questions regarding the financial history of the business, including the good periods and the not so good.

MICHAEL
LYON
A Continuous Culinary Adventure
H
ere are a couple things that we knew about Michael Lyon before we really had a chance to get to know him in person: he is a chef, he is extremely busy as we have run into him all over the Okanagan, his food is simply amazing, and he is very passionate about what he does, always doing it with a smile on his face!
“Born in Toronto, I was privileged enough to dine with my family at many wonderful restaurants, where I discovered my love for food. Now, many years later, my culinary adventure continues and I look forward to whatever life offers me next.”
What we didn’t know is ... he could well have been one of the youngest chefs at a world renowned restaurant, and to be honest a LOT more. Michael Lyon’s culinary adventures began at the innocent age of 14 when he climbed the ladder from dishwasher to first cook at “The Globe” restaurant in Rosemont. From there on there was only one direction for him – UP! Upon finishing high school he enrolled at George Brown Culinary College in Toronto, followed by the famous Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa and finishing in Paris, France. For 3 years Michael travelled throughout France, training with some of the greatest chefs in the world, before he returned to Toronto where he was offered the position of Sous Chef at Alice Fazolli’s, and soon thereafter transferred to Al Fresco’s, Far Niente as Executive Chef. “The adventure of a lifetime”, as Michael describes it, was the position of Executive chef for Planet Hollywood. After relocating to Moscow, Chef Lyon would be in charge of opening numerous locations for them throughout Europe, working with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis throughout his tenure there. 52

Upon returning to Canada, Michael rocked the culinary scene as the Executive Chef at the Maple Leaf in Banff, making him the first chef in history to win back to back Gold Medal Plates, a nationwide culinary competition. As a result, Michael Lyon has been inaugurated in the Gold Medal Plate Hall of Fame and will be hosting the competition for the next five years. For the past two years Michael has been filming
the Food Network Canada show Chef OFF, which has recently been nominated for the Gemini Award for best reality series. He has also started working with Agriculture Canada in Mexico City as a poster boy for Canadian beef, pork, pulses, wines, whiskeys and grains, and continually travels the world as one of North America’s most accredited chefs. ICON Okanagan welcomes Michael Lyon as our new Food Editor. We are flattered! Winter 2013

WALNUT CRUSTED LAMB RACK Ingredients: • • • • •
2 fully trimmed racks of lamb (just under 1 1/2 pounds each) 1 teaspoon Herbes de Provence salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste 1 tbsp vegetable oil 3 tbsp Dijon mustard
For the crust: • • • • •
2/3 cup finely chopped walnuts 2 tablespoon plain bread crumbs 1 tablespoon melted butter 1 teaspoon olive oil pinch of salt and fresh ground black pepper
Preparation: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Season the lamb very generously with the fresh black pepper and salt to taste. Sprinkle over and press in the dried herbs. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet, and brown the lamb racks on both sides for a few minutes over high heat. Remove to a roasting pan and reserve. Use a spoon to spread the Dijon mustard over the surfaces of the lamb. Spread some on the sides and ends, but most should remain on the top surface. Combine the crust ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Divide between the 2 racks of lamb, and sprinkle over to cover the mustard-spread surface. Once evenly distributed, press gently with your fingers to makes sure it’s adhering to the mustard. Place in the preheated oven and cook for 25 minutes, or until the internal temp is 125-130 degrees F, for medium-rare. Remove and let rest 10 minutes before slicing between the bones and serving.

Get ready for Tax Season by Terry Prechel, CMA Ringing in a New Year brings with it many things; new resolutions; new ideas, and another tax season! Tax season does not have to be an arduous time. With just a little thought and some very minimal planning you can quickly prepare to have your taxes completed in time and into CRA well before the filing deadline of April 30th. Don’t panic, take some time to think about what you need to do.
Trusted Advisor
Here is a list of some helpful things to get it all done before the deadline: Get Organized
1.
Yes, the shoebox! Spend a weekend and get it all in order. And for next year – forget the shoebox and design a filing system for all your receipts and tax documents. Do a little bit every month and it will help you to avoid year-end and tax-filing period rush, it will help you keep on track with your financial goals throughout the year as well. Think of what you need
2.
If you are employed, you will have a minimal number of slips, such as a T4, perhaps an RRSP slip, a slip from your bank or investment firm, a donation receipt and perhaps some medical receipts. Nothing too cumbersome to put together! For those who have had regular medication or treatments throughout the year you can request the total years charges from your pharmacist or medical provider. All pretty easy so far… Accountants
3.
We want to assist you to keep more of what you earn! We are here to help and to save you money, time and headaches. All this may seem daunting to you but this is “what we do” Even if you are not 100% prepared and some people aren’t certain what 100% prepared is; don’t think you can’t take your documents to an accountant. Although it’s possible to fill out tax forms without an accountant, it’s always a good idea to run your forms past someone who is familiar with tax laws before you turn them in. #3, 3185 Via Centrale Kelowna

4.
Your accountant works for YOU! Your accountant will assist you to ensure that you maximize your tax benefits and keep within the guidelines set by the CRA. Anyone may be audited, but if you have been honest with your accountant he will ensure that your audit will be smooth and that you won’t have any surprises at audit time. Yes, you can get tax advice from a variety of sources. It would be best to get the right advice for your particular situation. Everyone’s taxes are different, just because one person does something doesn’t mean it is correct or that it suits your situation. Your accountant should be your “trusted advisor”.

FAKE Tan... FAKE Tan... FAKE Tan... GenuinelyBETTER! BETTER! Genuinely BETTER! Genuinely
W
hether thinking ahead to the next Okanagan summer, or spending winter in the southern states, the question of tanning – and how much sun is safe – often arises. Unfortunately, a tan reflects damaged skin. The DNA inside of the cells has already mutated by the time a tan appears, and therefore no amount of tan is safe. Base tan?... that’s closing the gate after the horses are out – it’s too late at that point. Damaged skin cells lead to wrinkles, sun spots and skin cancer. Many people think that a healthy glow to your skin looks attractive. No one wants to be pasty white.
Product Overview: Tanning on the Outside • Bronzers: Cosmetic bronzers produce immediate effects that can be easily removed with soap and water. Really a form of make-up – lasts until it is washed off. • Tanning Lotions and Sprays: The most efective products are lotions and sprays containing dihydroxy-acetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the upper layer of the epidermis. It interacts with the cells: the colour change lasts a week.
So what to do? Tanning beds are out as they are at least as dangerous for your skin as the real sun. They are likely more dangerous because people have the misperception that they are somehow safer and use them more carelessly. Solution: tan from a bottle. There are good quality products on the market now that don’t streak orange or smell.
Tanning from the Inside • Tanning Pills: These typically contain the pigment canthaxanthin, and while the FDA has approved the use of canthaxanthin as a ‘food colour,’ it hasn’t as a tanning agent. Canthaxanthin-based tanning pills have been linked to dangerous side effects, including hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and canthaxanthin retinopathy (yellow deposits in the eye retina).
Self-tanning products have been around since the invention of cosmetics. In 1960 Coppertone introduced a sunless tanning product – but it produced an overall orange effect.
• Tanning Accelerators: Lotions or pills that contain the amino acid tyrosine. Makers of these products claim tyrosine stimulates natural tanning.
Today’s sunless tanning products achieve much better results. Tanning pills, sunless-tanning or self-tanning lotions and sprays, and cosmetic bronzers are available to impart a subtle bronze glow or a deep, dark tan.
Why do tans fade? Skin takes a lot of wear and tear, so it naturally regenerates itself. Every 35-45 days the outer layer of the skin is completely replaced. Since skin pigment is found in this upper layer, any natural or added pigment will be sloughed away in about one month’s time. This is why natural tans fade and why many self-tanning products recommend you re-apply the product every few days to maintain your tan.
Although sunless tanning products can yield a golden glow, they do not protect the skin from the ultraviolet radiation in the sun’s rays the way melanin in a ‘real’ tan does, so users of sunless tanning products still need to apply sunscreen before venturing out in the sun.
Parting advice? You know it... “Wear sunscreen.”

Clutching their jaws and visibly in pain, young and old alike point towards where the pain they experience is coming from and one by one teeth are removed to offer some sort of relief. The first task is to ensure everyone is pain free; the next is to teach everyone how to properly brush and maintain their teeth. “Everyone is in pain. I want good guys. You know, we can make average players into good players but you can’t make average individuals into good people. They have got to be good people and understand our expectations of them are that they are solid citizens and I want them to be better citizens when we are done with them here. (Ryan Cuthbert) He would literally take the room on his shoulders and away he would go and he forced guys to play better and, if you weren’t working hard, he didn’t have any problem letting you know that. Josh Gorges and Ryan would tell you right straight up, get going or else they would grab you and get you going.
Probably the most disappointing Memorial Cup was that one (2009) because we won right through, our goalie had a tough start in the first period and we couldn’t bounce back from it and that was one I thought was in the bank going in. I was reviewing all their report cards from school, the high school guys, and we’ve never had a team with so many guys that are honours students. So we’ve got 4 or 5 guys that have high 90’s averages for everything and you know they’re not taking basket weaving, they’re taking real courses. I’m very proud of them for that, it’s huge to me. Smart guys at school are smart guys on the ice. The old creed in hockey was, “Well if they’re not talking to you, you’re not doing anything wrong.” Well that’s the opposite of young guys today. They’re so intelligent now and they’re so driven to be good. I want them (coaches) talking to everyone, every day. It is as little as saying hello or were you at the movies last night? Just so that they know first of all that we care and just to get communication going in the room. They’re always texting and things like that. You have to sit across the table from somebody sometimes in a real job and talk. Tyson Barrie was one of my favorite guys to watch because you knew he was going to play the same every night and I used to chuckle if we were going into the third
period, down a goal, first shift, the way he’d go to try and get things evened up. I think we’re respected as a significant business. It’s better than a 3 million dollar a year business with 15 or 16 employees, we’re a big operation in the real world economics of Kelowna. This last bid for the Memorial Cup really frustrated me because our group Paul Mitchell and Bill Winters and the crew were so dedicated to getting the proposal that was going to work and we weren’t even close because the government of BC doesn’t fund things like Alberta and Saskatchewan does. So we couldn’t have the same bid, so we’re not even on a fair playing field now. I’m not arrogant in saying it at all, we’re looked upon as a model franchise, we do a good job, we do a lot of things and yet now we’re facing a real good challenge here in Kelowna again. We’re 7 or 800 people less than we had at games last year and now we have got to work to get those people back in the building. I’m confident in this community and I really get tired of people saying the economy is not good here, the economy is not good here, it just, when you talk to guys that are in business here some of them are having record months right now. So, I think that’s just an easy excuse. If we don’t keep our rules the way they are then we’re going to lose 7 or 8 franchises in a hurry and why we do what we do regulation wise, is so that the Swift Currents and Prince Alberts and Prince Georges and Cranbrooks can compete with the Vancouvers and Calgarys and Edmontons of the world. So, that’s just unfortunate but you know what, I think our commissioner, Ron Robinson, did an outstanding job on how he handled that thing (Portland).

IMITATIONS OF LIFE the Photorealistic Art of John Hall
N
o, these are not photos, they are original acrylic paintings! They are so real, so precise, that especially when you are looking at a printed version of them you will think that you look at a photograph. Thus the term “Photorealism” or “Superrealism.” There have always been artists who have painted extremely realistic artworks referring to nature, but with the invention of the camera, artists found a new foundation for their work. It was in the mid 1960s and early 1970s when Photorealism, evolving from the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, got popular. Drawing from advertising and commercial imagery, most artists used an industrial technique such as a projector to transfer the photograph to their support, often canvas or illustration board, while others preferred a pencil grid for scaling up the photograph. Although the height of the movement was in the 1970s, Photorealism continues to be a popular art form, spanning the world. And with our ever evolving technology one can say that artists these days exceed what was thought possible in the 1970s. Which is why a lot of people refer to it as “Hyperrealism.” But that is another story ... 64

According to Louis K. Meisel, who many see as the inventor of the term “Photorealism”, one of the definitions for a real Photorealist is that he “must have exhibited work as a Photo-Realist by 1972 to be considered one of the central PhotoRealists.” John Hall’s career began in the 1960s when he aligned himself to a movement, called “new realism.” Born in 1943 in Edmonton, John’s future career wasn’t all laid out. No one in his family was artistic, and although John showed some drawing talents it was a far stretch to consider it something that may generate an income. When through high-school his interest in the arts kept growing, he finally made the decision to give it a try and to enrol at the (now) Alberta College of Art and Design. “I thought that the commercial art world may be a possibility, maybe advertising,” John recalls, “but only Orbit (2009)

a few weeks into the program I knew that it was actually fine arts that I really wanted to do!” Over the next little while John took classes in sculpture, ceramics, even printmaking, but had a steady focus on painting. “You can’t really tell why, but I was in love with the medium, and with the great instructors I had in college it made my decision even easier.” The great “instructors” were the best of the best in western Canadian art: Marion Nicoll, Stanford Perrott and Illingworth Kerr, to name but a few. Let’s not forget Ron Spickett, my primary painting instructor”, John adds, “he really understood me and pointed me in the right direction.” A main influence in John Hall’s career was popart artist Jim Rosenquist. “His bold realistic paintings of images found in print advertising, devoid of the kind of expressive brushwork so common in Fall 2012

the ‘fifties, provided me with a very strong formal and conceptual paradigm.” After his graduation John spent time in Mexico and added some studies at the Instituto Allende. At the end of the program Hall was granted a solo exhibition at a gallery which would later become the Art Gallery of Calgary. Although none of his artworks sold he wasn’t disappointed. “I never expected to become rich quick through art, but I was overwhelmed by the very positive reception of my paintings. It was great!” And it would continue, with his reputation in the art world steadily growing. Throughout the 1970s and 80s John Hall’s art appeared in more than 70 group and nearly 20 solo exhibitions across Canada. In the 1980s John was granted an artist residency in New York, where he would spend days working on his art, and evenings wandering through the halls of art museums.”I saw artwork I only www.icon-okanagan.com

large-scale Okanagan landscapes in magazines or at galleries across the country. ICON Okanagan: Why Photorealism? John Hall: Although I now feel comfortable being associated with the photorealists, that was not always the case. Through most of my career I focused (pun intended) on describing in paint the appearance of everyday objects and aspects of popular culture using very traditional methods and techniques. And when I began using photography around 1980 I was more interested in using it to develop pragmatic and efficient working methods rather than in reproducing the unique appearance of photographic prints.

knew from books and magazines,” John smiles, “it was fantastic.” The 90s ... let’s just say his career took off. Or how would you describe it if an artist has a solo exhibition at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, becomes a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, exhibits in Europe, the US, Great Britain and Japan, and even has a street in Ontario named after him? During all the years as an artist John Hall always maintained a full-time job to be able to provide a regular income for his family. He taught at Ohio Wesleyan University, at ACAD and finally at the University of Calgary’s Art Department, where he is professor emeritus. Born in Edmonton, John Hall often came to the Okanagan on holidays,
and after his 25 year long career as an art teacher he and his wife Joice decided to make the move in 1999. It was a decision between Mexico, where they had a second home for many years, and the Okanagan, which in a way reminded them of Mexico anyways. Here, a stone throw distance from Mission Hill Winery, they found a beautiful lakeview home which also serves as a studio for both of them.
It wasn’t until well into the 1990s that I began to incorporate visual cues, most notably focus, derived directly from photography. My goal has always been to bring unexpected subjects into the world of high art and my paintings of doughnuts, liquorice allsorts, Mexican trinkets and most recently small polished stones give me a lot of pleasure.
Joice Hall is a wellknown painter herself, and you may have seen her beautiful Jump (2009) 30” x 30”

ICON Okanagan: Are you often asked why you paint something that has been a photograph anyways? John Hall: Some viewers pay too much attention to the superficial appearance of a painting rather than considering the painting as an object that has taken days, even months to produce. The true value of a painting of this sort is its record of the myriad of decisions made by the artist as he struggles to adequately describe in paint the look of his subject as captured in a photograph. ICON Okanagan: So how do you approach a new painting? Do you take pictures? Or do you use pictures you find somewhere? And then what next? John Hall: After settling on a subject— say candies, doughnuts, marbles or rocks—I create various arrangements in my studio and photograph them from different angles and under various lighting conditions. This can take a week or so, I then spend considerably more time working on the resulting digital files in Adobe Photoshop.

After preparing the canvases that will comprise the series I project the images and do a fairly precise line drawing. From this point on it’s a matter of pushing acrylic paint around using traditional brushes supplemented with a little airbrushing until the painting is finished. As I say, a small painting will take up to two weeks and a large one can take three or four months.

It’s really winter now. Christmas is gone, and so is 2012. The decorations have been packed away, and the Okanagan Valley is covered in a blanket of snow. The ski resorts are busy, and we are all enjoying our long evenings with friends and family having some romantic cuddle time in front of the fireplace. The cold months bring forth thoughts of comfort foods and hearty wines, the slow-cooker is having its busiest time of the year and we are craving a good soup, chili or stew. But what wines are able to stand up to these kinds of meals? Think big! Think rich, think RED. Yes, we know, there are great white wines that will work well even during the cold season, but the time of crisp whites is over for now, let’s turn to a robust Merlot, a luscious Cabernet Sauvignon, a Syrah or Malbec!
Cedar Creek 2009 Platinum Reserve Malbec Hurry, if you want to get a bottle or two. The Cedar Creek Platinum Reserve Malbec (153 cases produced) is high in demand, and for good reason. The “Platinum” label is only given to Cedar Creek’s best wines, and the Platinum Malbec is a worthy candidate for the throne. The Malbec grape, which originates from the Bordeaux region of France, actually gets its fame and glory as THE signature grape in Argentina! There, in the sun-drenched climate, it becomes the medium to full-bodied dark purple wine with great fruity flavours that we all love so much. Very few wineries in the Okanagan offer a Malbec, the Cedar Creek version being one of the most flavourful ones. Hand-harvested from their Desert Ridge Vineyard in Osoyoos, it is a blend of 94% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon and has been aged 20 months in 100% French oak. What we taste ... Black cherry, spicy dark plum and chocolate. Nice, very nice! The Malbec is a great “in front of the fireplace” wine, enjoyed on its own, but let’s look into food pairings. We had it with a spicy Indian dish, and we would definitely recommend it with red meat and spices. Try it with beef, game, or lamb, it is so food-friendly, you’ll love it! (Should the Malbec be sold out ... try their highly awarded Merlot!)

Hester Creek 2009 Reserve Merlot Ok, first something that we did not know: Merlot is actually an old and regional French word for a young blackbird. Great, we learned something! What we couldn’t find out is if this is because of the grape’s darkblue colour, or the blackbirds’ fondness for grapes. Ah, well, back to the wine. It is believed that Merlot is the offspring of Cabernet Franc and closely related to Cabernet Sauvignon. Adaptable to most soils and relatively simple to cultivate the grape has become extremely popular and is now grown in virtually all wine growing countries. At Hester Creek the grapes used come from some of the estate’s oldest plantings from the early 1970’s. Rob Summers, Hester Creek’s winemaker has done an excellent job with the 2009 Reserve Merlot. No wonder experts give it high ratings; soft, fruity, with aromas and flavours of black cherry, plums and raisins, and maybe a hint of liquorice. The wine reveals how well Merlot has acclimatized to our environment, with great concentration of fruit and a bright finish, indeed it does! Do we have a food pairing ready for you? Well, like a good Cabernet, this Merlot goes well with a lot of different foods, but we can highly recommend it with rich beef and lamb dishes. Enjoy!

Silver Sage “The Flame” “You have to try this one.” I was at a friend’s house, a wine connoisseur himself, who had just found a new wine he wanted to share with me. Be careful, he said, this one is – different! What happened next can only be described as a roller-coaster ride for my senses. What I saw in my glass was a white wine. The nose promised a sweet experience, a little bit of a Gewürztraminer, or maybe an Ehrenfelser, with a hint of spice. Peach and apricots came to mind, and maybe a hint of pepper. I looked at my friend. Did I see a devilish smile on his face? I got nervous, something was not right. I swirled the glass once more, got another sense of the aromas, and finally sipped it. “Nice was my first thought. I was right, it had the sweetness of a Gewürztraminer, and some spice. Not bad. I looked up at my friend. There, again he had a weird smile on his face. I wondered what was going on – and then it hit me. All of the sudden my tongue was on fire. Tears shot out my eyes, and for a second I was out of breath. WOW! Now this was different! What my friend had poured me was an aperitif wine from Silver Sage Winery south of Oliver. The name of the wine? Flame! So you would think I haven’t touched it since, right? Wrong! I’ve become addicted to it. The moment you know what it is, a late harvest Gewürztraminer with peach, apricot and pepper (there’s a crimson-red Anaheim pepper in the bottle!), you approach it a little differently. Bottom line: Highly recommended. Not just as a conversation piece, but as a great aperitif or as a cocktail.

Church & State 2008 Coyote Bowl Meritage Awarded with a Gold medal at the 2012 New World International Wine Competition as well as at the 2012 AllCanadian Wine Championships, this blend is a true champion. A look at the winemaking notes tells us that “the 2008 growing season was quite cool, but consistent warm weather in the key ripening months of September and October allowed for excellent flavour development at comparatively modest sugar/alcohol levels. The fruit for this wine, sourced from different vineyards in Oliver and Osoyoos, was picked in late October, 2008. It was fermented in stainless tanks and transferred to French Oak Barrels (20% new) where it was matured for 31 months before being bottled in May 2010.” The 2008 Meritage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, shows some interesting fruit flavours of blackberries, black currant and a touch of cocoa. It is rich and has a nice and lengthy lush, lingering finish. Definitely great as your “stand-alone” glass of wine, but we believe this wine is meant to be enjoyed with food. May we recommend a roasted duck, a good steak, or hard cheeses? What did we have it with? Mac & Cheese! Oh yeah! A tip from the winemaker: Drink now through 2015.
