With all of the talented, successful women in town it is becoming hard to keep up, but we try to do our best! We were very happy to join Becky Komant at her book launch party at Social 242 restaurant and couldn’t wait to get our hands on a copy of The Controlled.

Loads of fabulous locals came to celebrate with Becky, enjoy some delicious treats, sip back some incredible wine and sample some cocktails. Everyone had the opportunity to hear the beautiful mother of 4 and author of The Controlled recite a personal reading from a steamy section of her erotic suspense thriller and even have her sign their copies.

And if you are thinking Becky looks a bit familiar…well then just flip back to the cover. We had the great privilege of working with Becky as one of our awesome cover models, on a sunny day in Kelowna’s City Park!

aving had the opportunity to view and enjoy many, many beautiful homes, one sometimes begins to take it for granted and unfortunately you can begin to gain a dismissive mentality, you might say: “If you have seen one nice place you’ve seen them all!”

hat really isn’t the case at all, but too much of a good thing can sometimes become a little mundane… so, without a doubt we have been yearning to see something completely out of the box, something awe inspiring, something we can all dream of one day attaining…something completely spectacular.

In this case, we have undoubtedly found something beyond spectacular!

When you think of lakeside living in the Okanagan, privacy isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind,

the beauty of the lake…wait no, the obnoxiously high taxes, then the beauty of the lake and finally the neighbours you will be sharing the beach with or talking to over the fence while you barbecue. The reality is most often, when you are on the lake in the Okanagan you are almost always sandwiched in between two houses or able to peer directly into your neighbours’ kitchen window as they prepare dinner.

What if you could step just outside the bounds of Kelowna or Vernon and delve into your own completely private lakeside oasis, you may even choose to call it a beachside resort of your own.

Just off of Okanagan Centre Road, we were able to locate exactly such a place. An 8 acre property encompassing beautiful manicured gardens, immaculate landscaping, orchards full of delicious fruit and all of amazing varieties of birds our stunning valley is home to.

As we pull into a long winding driveway we enter the orchards and approach a cluster of old growth trees which have grown together to create a picturesque natural tunnel , something you would only expect to encounter in a romantic film, perhaps as an enamoured couple motors along through Tuscany in their vintage convertible.

To the immediate left is the pièce de rÊsistance nearly 500 feet of incredible uninterrupted lake frontage without any irritating city lights to look upon. Such a serene environment is not to be left unused and so, under a magnificent trellis enveloped in romantic creeping foliage, the entire family can sit and enjoy the views lakeside. Maybe having a barbecue or relaxing by the fire as it crackles in the awe inspiring outdoor fireplace. And not to worry, the little ones can even enjoy a lovely lakeside home of their own under the watchful eyes of their parents in the adjoining playhouse.

Here we find a large scale flower garden that provides a stunning view from the kitchen as well as an abundance of fresh cut flowers for the entire home throughout the spring and summer months.

of gorgeous antique stained glass doors. The office is adjacent to yet another powder room fitted with a stunning antique vanity.

Directly behind lays the master bedroom which seems to be one with the nature outside. Massive windows peer out over the lake and the immaculately manicured lawns. The same goes for the adjoining master en-suite where one can soak in the tub or enjoy the massive custom shower complete with a multitude of showerheads and spray nozzles for all of your bathing needs. Adorned with opulent granites and marble this space is truly fit for a sheik. room where an elegant grand piano stands tucked in the corner and an imposing fireplace is the center piece, a beautiful example of superior craftsmanship.

Ahead we find the sun room, fitted with a massive nana wall system that opens directly out onto a large patio which looks over the front yard and allows for a lovely lake breeze, a way to invite nature indoors, and a theme that is evident throughout the entire home.

On the right we find a small dining nook flanked by the formal dining room, which leads into an incredible kitchen.

While just beyond the kitchen is another fully equipped butler’s kitchen where all of messy prep work can be done before a large family meal or party and if you are so inclined your catering company could even make use of it.

Making our way back to the foyer we pass by an enormous laundry room, a powder room, and access to the attached garage. Then dead ahead we find the main floor office into which we enter through a set

The size of another two car garage and sporting an overhead crane for helping out with those heavy lifting tasks, any gearhead would absolutely lose their mind in this shop! any mowers, tractors, atv’s and toys you may have in your collection!

What are floating rate loans and why is it a good time to be investing in them?

Floating rate loans are typically issued to below investment-grade borrowers and represent a portion of the borrowers’ total debt (i.e. not their entire debt). The loans are called “floatingrate” because the interest paid on the loans adjusts periodically.

These securities provide higher interest income when rates rise and the loan becomes more attractive. As such, floating rate loans will typically outperform traditional fixed income securities in rising rate environments.

Traditional bonds do not typically offer this protection from rising interest rates.

Quantitative easing is keeping interest rates extremely low, with government rates in both Canada and the U.S. well below their long term averages.

Although rates are low right now, we’re concerned with interest rates rising, specifically in government and investment grade corporate bonds which will reduce returns of currently held issues. These investments have a fair amount of interest rate risk, and if GDP beats expectations as we’re

projecting for 2013, then interest rates are likely to rise.

As we’ve seen recently, traditional fixed income securities can experience negative returns as interest rates rise. Exposure to floating rate loans through the Manulife Floating Rate Income Fund can help protect a fixed income portfolio from this interest rate risk.

The Power of M “The goal of BMW M is to seed in everyone’s hearts the commitment to perfection and high performance experience taken from the racetracks around the world for more than a quarter of a century. BMW M history is the infallible proof for the big words mentioned above. Many people that had the chance to drive an M model say that the uncompromised driving satisfaction and performance given by these cars is addictive for life.“

The first M-badged car that was officially for sale to the public was introduced at the 1978 Paris Motor Show. It was the breathtaking M1 (code E26), which was more of a race car in domestic trim so BMW Motorsport could make use of it in the racing circuit. It was this car that would pen history for M, setting the stage for some of the most powerful and beautiful BMWs ever built.

The first “real M” production car was then introduced in 1979. It was the high performance version of BMW’s popular 5 series sedan, called the M535i. At present, M has offered modified versions of almost all of BMWs models, except for the 7 Series and the X1 and X3 SUVs, although

we have heard rumours that an M7 may soon be in the works.

However, due to the popularity of the styling features of the real M-cars, BMW offers several models with a “M-Sport Package.” These cars, although modified by the “M” division, are not full M models and only feature an “M” badge and not the “M” followed by the model number (M3,M5,M6 etc.). The M-Sport Package usually includes an aerodynamic package, M rims, and an upgraded interior, but does not include the M modifications to the drivetrain or suspension.

It is also the top model in the M-line. Needless to say – we had a blast!

1978 BMW M1

MW M division (also known as “M-Technik or just “M” for Motorsport), probably the best known and the most successful high performance division of any large automaker worldwide, turned 40 last year. It was initially created to facilitate BMW’s racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s but began to offer modified versions of nearly every car on the BMW production line in 1978.

Just look at the huge air intakes with matte-black honeycomb grille inserts, the flared front and rear fenders that stretch over the M6’s big wheels with their enormous calipers or the sexy twin chromed exhaust tailpipes. Design at its best, testosterone fueled! And when you finally open the door, you will find that it is no less special than the exterior.

fibre trim. You can select multiple trim options (wood, for example) but the carbon fibre in this car is outstanding.

You have to see it!

Next is the thick leather wrapped M steering wheel with beautiful stitching in the M colours, the extremely comfortable and supportive M bucket seats as well as an entertainment and iDrive system with a massive 10.2” screen facing the driver. In this BMW everything is set up for the drivers’ convenience and pleasure.

One thing you should check out are the two tone interior options that BMW offers for this car. They truly make it extra special - not only

WOW! Some other goodies we fell in love with include: the rear view cameras with surround view, lane departure warning and the heads-up display!

Yes, the M has a very cool display that projects all relevant data right onto the windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road.

A very influential individual, actually, the reason one of the co-publishers of our magazine ventured into the world of writing. Marzio Manderioli, or as he was known back in the day in his English class at one of our local high schools, Mr. Manderioli is the talented doodler responsible and he is just…

at festivals. Through the convenience of the internet, today Marzio works full time literally as a freelance cartoonist throughout the globe.

“I just love the magic that a line can create on a piece of paper,” Marzio states. “It is simple art but when done well it is very expressive and it can provoke many reactions.”

Mad about cartooning…

At approximately age 8, Marzio started a life-long obsession with doodling on all the paper he could find.

Inspired by satirical magazines like Mad and Cracked, and in particular, by the art of famed caricaturist Mort Drucker, he then decided to become a professional cartoonist.

During the past 30 years, Marzio has published editorial cartoons in newspapers, produced illustrations for books and worked as a caricaturist in shopping centres and

t was the perfect day for the Grand Opening of Kelowna’s newest hair salon, Fire-Ice Image Studio. Located in the lower Mission area on the corner of Lanfranco and Richter, this design-laden place combines several services under one roof. From hair-styling to nail designs, massages and even professional photo shoots Fire-Ice Image Studio offers it all.

With Sun-FM and Power 104 radio as well as the Kelowna Fire Department on location, the Grand Opening was a huge success. Not only did Fire-Ice make it a “free blow dry and style” day with live model photo shoots, food and drinks, they also made a donation of $15 for every hair cut! In the end a $1,000 check was written to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund.

A Touch of Hollywood On the set of A Sister’s Nightmare Wow, what a day! An amazing sunny Okanagan afternoon in Summerland was the backdrop for our visit to the set of A Sister’s Nightmare.

It wasn’t all glitz and glam though as our shuttle took us from the casts trailer area and into the woods where some of the final scenes of the film were being shot.

“No, no Jane, drop the weapon!”

We heard this line so many times that day .. we actually dreamed about it!

A quick sit down with cast members Peyton List, Natasha Henstridge and Matthew Settle really was the highlight of our visit. They made us feel at home and soon we were happily flipping through the last edition of ICON Okanagan and discussing items for our next ICONic Apparel section. Let’s just say, Matthew had some really awesome ideas!

With an amazing cast and the passionate and diverse filmmaker Vic Sarin, this film is poised to be an instant hit! We are very excited to see how the scenes that we witnessed being shot turn out in the finished product; you may even catch one of us giggling in the background as we enjoyed our day on set.

Fishing With Confidence The dating world is one that for most single people can slide by the moment in any direction along the scale between playground and nightmare. It is essentially impossible to simplify it to a science, but there is an attitude or way of thinking that can guide a gentleman along the path to meeting/keeping a great girl. That “girl” we are referring to is the classy, confident, cool, and fun girl we usually hope to meet. If that isn’t your kind of girl, then you might be holding the wrong magazine.

This may seem shocking to you, but she wants to know that you like her. For this girl, playing it cool and pretending you don’t really care is just annoying. It shows that you don’t have the confidence to go after what you want. Of course we aren’t talking about being overbearing or creepy. It is about showing people that you know who you are, you know exactly what you want, and you aren’t too insecure to show it. If you are playing it cool, you are just playing games, and a great girl will either think you are a wuss, or that you may not even like her.

That confidence needs to carry through all your encounters. If you want to meet the girl you see across the room, go introduce yourself. If you want to ask the girl you have known for a while to take your relationship to the next level, then do it! Go after what you want, and if you can’t have it, move on. Seriously though...move on.

For some reason men have decided that the end of the first date or two represents the beginning of the “game.” Who will text first? Do I seem too anxious? Who will initiate the next date? Does she like me? Should I have worn a different shirt?

It is truly the saddest display of mental jousting in a coliseum of insecurity. If she likes you, she will respond to your invitation

(because the previous paragraph inspired you to ask her out again...right?). If she doesn’t like you, she will likely make excuses. It is that simple. If she wants to play the games, then perhaps she isn’t ready for the sophisticated and confident gentleman that you now are.

Lastly, regardless of what your friends or society tells you, meeting someone online can be a great way to connect when we are busy, new, and/or unwilling to hang out in bars. The philosophy online is the same as in real life. Don’t be a liar.

By that I mean don’t have pictures from high school when you were 50 pounds lighter and had way more hair. As well, if you do meet someone great that way, don’t lie about it to everyone for fear of judgment. If you found love, be proud of yourself! If you didn’t find love yet, try not being so cheap, and join a site that isn’t free and full of creepers. It might be better.

A fulfilling relationship can only be found if you are confident in who you are, sure of what you want, and if you carry that confidence, respect, and honesty into the proverbial “sea”.

What do you have to lose by taking a risk and being who you are? Joan Crawford said “Love is a fire, but whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.” So why not just go all-in and see what happens?

We usually regret things we did a lot less than the things we never tried.

hen contemplating moving to Kelowna, one of my biggest fears was the possibility of having to furnish my house from The Brick.

“People are now more focused on contemporary, they’re searching for it.

You used to have to go to Vancouver or Calgary,” says Kandola. “Then pay for transit here, which is not the easiest thing.”

Don’t get me wrong, The Brick does what it does well, and they are certainly big enough – and successful enough – for me to have a little fun at their expense. But I’m a bit of a style aficionado and dearly love ‘contemporary’ rather than ’traditional’ interior design. Happily, I have discovered I’m not alone in this.

People are sometimes scared by the concept of contemporary interiors, confusing it with the stark, coldness of minimalism. While minimalism resides under the umbrella of contemporary, the latter also embraces a number of other trends – hence the name ‘contemporary’, or ‘of the time’. A contemporary room today may boast severe white walls, concrete surrounds and a minimalist Philippe Starck sofa, but can also be mixed with warm wood

“I have a lot of contemporary clients in Kelowna,” says Nicole BegrandFast, Begrand Fast Design Inc. “It’s

Zed Home’s Terry Simpson categorises her customers as “design educated”, while La Bonne Vie’s Tracey Wikenheiser describes her clients as “forward thinking and interested in being original, and unique”.

“Our customers really want something different,” agrees Justin Kandola, DK Modern Furniture. “They want to design their house so it’s not like you would see everywhere else. They want quality – something that lasts, but looks good and is comfortable.”

“When we started, we really had to educate people about modern design, but after two years our customers are starting to understand it a bit more.

Kelowna is still very traditional, but is getting more knowledgeable about contemporary design,” says Kandola.

“Pinterest, Houzz and online magazines have really made design something easily accessable and as a result people are more educated and aware of styles, eras, designers, trends, etc,” agrees Wikenheiser.

So what draws people to contemporary interior design?

According to Wikenheiser, “I think the client is not interested in having what his parents, grandparents had – I think with contemporary design you can colour outside the lines far easier than with traditional design. It’s more about expression of one’s self and if you still desire a few traditional elements a mix can be done quite easily.”

“The beauty of wood is you can incorporate it into a more traditional home much easier than a glass or chrome look,” explains Kandola. “It helps you transition into contemporary. You want it modern, but you still want it to be homey.”

ur little town is home to some pretty amazing and talented women, so having caught wind of this, we knew we had to dig a little deeper and find out more…MEET Allie Henderson!

When we think of freestyle motocross, not to be stereotypical but, an attractive young woman is not the first thing that comes to mind. As one of the very few women involved in the sport on a professional level Allie is a trailblazer, and a brave one at that. An intimidating sport to break into, to say the least, freestyle motocross is dominated by men, men who are frequently flying through the air doing backflips and a multitude of other gravity defying stunts. But broken bones, scrapes, scratches and the myriads of talented and more experienced riders around haven’t deterred her one bit, in fact they have motivated her to get up and try again and again, and fight through some pretty serious pain.

“IF IT’S NOT FUN ...

I’M NOT DOING IT!”

Having started her journey just over one year ago, this determined young lady ventured South on her own, with no idea where she would end up. Fortunately she found herself in Union Point, Georgia at a resort called Durhamtown Plantation.

Down South Allie trained diligently and as a way to give back to the sport she has become so passionate about she created “Ladies Ride Day” to break down some of the barriers of entry and where she was able to work with, train and inspire women that were interested in riding.

Recently, Allie has been spending lots of time training in Oliver, BC, has taken part in a show or two, is throwing down some increasingly impressive tricks and can even jump a full gap…(75 feet!!!)

The first vintage was released in the fall of 1995, with the Poplar Grove Cabernet Franc receiving top honours at the Okanagan International Wine Festival.

Poplar Grove white wines are released the year following harvest to preserve the primary fruit flavours.

ummertime in Kelowna? Think beaches and wineries. New swimwear boutique Celladora is (obviously) anchored firmly in the first category, but has a surprising connection with the second as well. According to Gerri Woznesensky, who co-owns the shop with her daughter Brianna, its name is a play on the words ‘cellar door’, in homage to the local area’s industry.

Celladora opened in February, and is already making inroads at being Kelowna’s ‘must-stop’ shop for beachwear, offering interesting – and in some cases exclusive – swimwear lines, including Maria Bonita, Seafolly, Vitamin A and ‘ultra fashion line’ Beach Bunny for women, and Fred Perry and Penguin for men.

This season, men are looking at a shorter swim short, and for women ‘boy shorts’ are still popular, and we will also see the ‘butterfly’ bottom, which boasts a ruched seam up the middle of the back. “It gives you a heart shaped rear, which is very flattering, and also prevents sagging when you come out of the water.”

Californian label Vitamin A also has some interesting unique selling points. “It’s made from recyclable materials, and is absolutely soft as can be. It’s also reversible so you get two suits out of one.”

However, according to Woznesensky, biggest buzz word is ‘retro’.

Men…? Well lets just say they seem to be driven a little more by the merchandise. That sharing gene looks more like the Greycup which means….if its an official pass its okay. After all sharing is caring right?

More important is where you are in the lineup!

At the end of the day, dating your friend’s ex is definitely risky business. There are some things to think

about before you leap. First why are you attracted to this person? Did you get to know him while he was with your friend or is it a more superficial attraction?

Important to think about because your decision to date him may mean you risk your friendship with your galpal. Is he going to be worth that?

Also how close are you and your friend? For some, the closer the friend the more off limits the ex.

How did their relationship end, was it amicable, is it truly over…..has she moved on? Did he? You don’t want to fall for this guy and find he’s only into you to get back at her or back with her!

Try to find a time to talk to your friend and just straight up ask her how she would feel about it. She might tell you that he would be perfect for you and give you a free hall pass! But don’t ask if you aren’t prepared to hear. There is a chance she will say no way and then ...?

Focus Hannah, do you really feel this is the guy for you or are you lusting after forbidden fruit? Give this idea some time to simmer and see if you still want to take a sip in a few months.

Fat Treatment: The THICK and the THIN of it

T

he demand for non-invasive treatments to reduce fat and cellulite has increased dramatically in the past few years. We expect effective treatments that deliver excellent clinical results – and that are comfortable and safe.

Some studies show a positive response.

There are no dangerous side effects to this treatment, but many treatment are required (like 15 – 18) and then monthly maintenance. Each treatment session takes roughly an hour and costs >$100.

But what really works? Here’s a quick overview of how to separate the tabloid claims from what there is evidence of success.

MESOTHERAPY: This involves the injection of a cocktail of homeopathic medications that supposedly break down fat. But there is no FDA approval, no standardized solutions, and frankly, there is insufficient evidence towards the safety and efficacy.

Down side may include swelling, bruising, pain, as yet unknown long term effects of the treatment… and high treatment cost.

COMMON SUCCESS

THERAPIES:

MIXED

EXERCISE AND DIET: Following a healthy diet and regular exercise is beneficial for almost every aspect of healthy living. “Just do it.”

CREAMS: A great number of creams claim to treat cellulite and fat, but are modest at best – and certainly not permanent. The best ones seem to be those with caffeine or theophylline – though the studies are not all in agreement. Note: expensive ones don’t seem to be more effective.

HERBAL MEDICATIONS: There is no herb or vitamin that has shown to be effective on cellulite or fat reduction. Before trying any supplements, one should always check with their family doctor for drug interactions.

ENDERMOLOGIE: This treatment uses a device that suctions and “kneads” the skin.

LIPOSUCTION: Liposuction is done on the fat in the deeper reserve layers of the skin and not in the subcutaneous layer.

It can effectively contour the body, one should not expect it to vastly improve the appearance of cellulite. Effective, but due to cost – not to mention surgery and risk – it is less popular than the non-surgical treatments.

NEW TYPES OF TREATMENT: NO NEEDLES, NO SURGERY Radio Frequency (RF) itself is not new – but its use in non-invasive skin tightening, cellulite reduction and circumferential fat reduction are exciting. (A few common devices are VenusFreeze or BodyTite.) RF

energy penetrates the skin and underlying fatty tissue quickly and safely – and heats it up. The super-heated fat cells are then naturally purged over the next 3 to 6 weeks. Treatments are quick (it can be done over a lunch), and patients feel a comfortable-yet-hot sensation. 4 to 6 treatments are typically required, and a typical package for 6 treatments is ~$1500.

Another interesting treatment/device is marketed as CoolSculpting. This targets a larger section of fat (compared to RF above), and gently cools the unwanted fat cells to induce a controlled elimination of fat cells. This reduces bulges in treated areas of the body without harming surrounding tissue.

At least several treatments are required, but results are often visible after 3 to 6 weeks. A typical “bye bye belly” package (3 treatments) starts at ~$2250. Patients are usually very happy with the reduction in their “spare tire” or other unwanted bulges!

Here’s The Skinny: A review of scientific literature, supported by our experience, conclude that none of the treatments have been shown to be a “cure” for cellulite. However, there are several effective non-surgical fat therapies that, after several treatments, and within several weeks, show good results.

On June 8, 2013, Kip Jon Productions, in conjunction with multiple local sponsors, staged the premier couture fashion show, Rock ‘n Rococo Affair in Kelowna at St.Michael’s and All Angels Church on Sutherland Road.

This incredible 18th century themed event showcased local designer Sam Shakura, of Kelowna’s Rock House Style as well as fashions from Vernon’s 104 Grey Clothing. Dressed to the nines in their 18th century attire, event staff and volunteers really made an impression as you walked the red carpet to the reception area.

With the unique setting, great music, incredible production, modern and lust-worthy fashions, great wine from The Vibrant Vine and some fantastic drinks provided by Okanagan Spirits Distillery, event-goers were all smiles as they watched the models strut their stuff down the center aisle just as you would expect in any New York fashion show. We can’t wait for next year’s event!

Buying or selling a business is a huge decision for those on either side of the transaction. Whether your company is the size of Jim Pattison Group or a small Mom and Pop, be sure you weigh the pros and cons carefully before moving forward.

The Art of Charla Maarschalk What can you expect for your life when you are born in Happy Adventure? No, we haven’t made this up, if you travel to the Eastport Peninsula in Newfoundland you may find a sign along the road welcoming visitors to “Newfoundland’s most peaceful community.” And this is where Charla Maarschalk began ... her adventures.

There was no doubt Charla would pursue a career in the arts. Since she was a child her family would find her drawing and creating, and when she got older she made plans of becoming an architect. At university her path waned from painting to photography, but when her curriculum introduced her to multimedia she made a decision to follow a career in combined interactive multimedia and graphic design.

With a Bachelor in Fine Arts Charla became a web designer with graphic design, print and marketing dominating her work life but her passion for photography never left her. She finally opened her own photography business and for the next 10 years became known for her portraits and wedding photography. But the adventure had yet to begin ...

From Newfoundland her studies carried her to Calgary, Alberta, and Oakville, Ontario, and at one point her work introduced her to the Okanagan Valley. She fell in love with the area and the people in Kelowna, and although her work took her to other provinces she finally settled down here with her husband and her three boys.

A resident of Kelowna with its thriving art community Charla decided to go back to her roots in the fine arts. “Painting was my first love,” she says, “and it felt good to have a paintbrush in my hands again.”

ICON Okanagan: From Newfoundland to the Okanagan Valley ... what was it that attracted you to Kelowna and the area?

Charla Maarschalk: The first time I came to Kelowna ever was visiting friends during university. It was definitely the beauty of the valley that won my everlasting love...and the amazing fresh fruit. Back home in Newfoundland it was hard to get fresh fruit at any time of the year.

When I tasted peaches fresh off the tree I knew the Okanagan had me hook, 56

line and sinker. The reason we brought our family back many years later was an equal mix between the valley and the people of Kelowna.

ICON Okanagan: You actually lived here once before?

Charla Maarschalk: Yes, for 3 years at the beginning of the Millenium. The company I worked for, Ministry Media (now Moving Pixel) is still a great place to meet your web design needs. My biggest claim to fame in those days was that I worked next to Lance, the future creator of Club Penguin. He was and is still a genius with a huge heart.

There was no question asked that he couldn’t answer and I asked a lot.

This success with Club Penguin couldn’t have happened to two more humble, giving and passionate people than Lance and Dave (who was my boss at the time).

ICON Okanagan: Now, to leave a “real” job and pursue a career in arts must have been tough?

Charla Maarschalk: My career has definitely been an evolution. Not long after I moved to Calgary Ryan and I married and had our first son.

With the growing family and my wedding photography really taking off in Newfoundland we moved to St. John in 2007. It was perfect timing; the island only had a few contemporary wedding photographers and bridesto-be were crying out for more. I’ve had brides cry on the phone because I was already booked for their date!

The wedding season was short in NL and I hated turning people down because there weren’t many others to choose from.

Meanwhile my husband, who is from Zimbabwe, was longing for sunshine and I was really getting tired of shooting in the rain. But the photography market in the Okanagan was flooded and to be honest my heart was somewhere else. It took me a while to clear my head

and believe that painting was even a possibility. But faith is a big part of my life and I just had to trust that everything would work out and I would be led in the right direction for my career and my passions.

ICON Okanagan: It seems that most if not all of your paintings are faces?

Charla Maarschalk: Faces are definitely my ‘thing’. I always considered myself a people photographer. Capturing a tree in just the right light has never made me jump out of bed in the morning but capturing a face of any kind stirs up a passion I can’t deny.

From the very first brushstroke of 2012 there was no way to deny the direction my work would take: faces! I believe that people make the world go round. Relationships are the most important part of our lives.

They make or break us.

More and more of us need to realize that by helping others, even when it’s uncomfortable, will bring great joy and satisfaction in life. I guess somewhere in all that mumbo jumbo I want my paintings to inspire people to love each other and to know that they, themselves, hold great worth. That, I believe, can change the world...your world!

ICON Okanagan: Do you work on commission? So could someone send you a photo for you to paint?

Charla Maarschalk: Yes, I do a lot of commissions. love commissions. It’s so great to work with people and give them original art! If they want me to paint a loved one I always work from a photograph and when possible I definitely prefer to photograph them myself. It would be a dream come true to photograph every client myself. I sometimes can take just a few quick reference photos but it’s also fun to do a full fledge photo shoot with make up and wardrobe! I’ll never tire of that.

ICON Okanagan: The Okanagan has a thriving art community. What do you love about it, where would you like to see changes?

Charla Maarschalk: Hmmm. The Kelowna art scene is the first art scene I’ve been personally involved with and I love it here! I think it is big and diverse. It seems that everyone I meet here is interested in art. It’s an exciting scene to be a part of with so many helpful people. My experience has shown that the artists in the Okanagan are caring and giving people.

Right now the only I’d change is more of my art on peoples walls!

ICON Okanagan: So how do you promote your art? We actually saw your paintings at Social 247.

Charla Maarschalk: I have a website and I’m a big believer in the power of social media.

I love to follow people who post about natural health, faith and art.

It’s definetely one of the best ways to learn new things when you are connected to people who are like minded as you. Taking part in local art events where I meet art lovers and other people who are in the industry is also a great way to get connected. My people passion comes out in the marketing side of my art as well. I know there’s no bigger proponent for me then one person who believes in what I do.

ICON Okanagan: Well said! So where can people see your artwork in the next few months?

Charla Maarschalk: I’m represented by the M Gallery in Penticton. It’s a great shop to view and purchase local artists. The biggest show coming up will be Artwalk which is in Lake Country in early September. There will be so many great Okanagan artist there all with Original work to view and purchase. t’s an amazing weekend to be part of.

My work will be showing again at Social Restaurant. You can also check my website for up to date places around town to view my work each month. Of course I can also take appointments to view work in my home studio.

sh explains, “Our clubhouse is going to be the shining new jewel of Kelowna’s downtown, a building that will complement one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. It will showcase everything the Okanagan Valley has to offer. he Kelowna Yacht Club has many other things to boast about. It offers a lot of firsts for member boating clubs in Canada, from having the largest boat basin in Canada at 1006 slips, to running the only French immersion children’s learn-to-sail classes on the

continent in their Youth and Education program.

he Kelowna Yacht Club is also one of the most community-minded in Canada, sponsoring events like a fishing derby for the visually impaired, giving kids with disabilities and their families an outing on the water battling ‘pirates’ for booty, and maintaining over 30 free public mooring buoys in safe anchorages on the lake. In fact, because of these successes, the Canadian Yachting West magazine is featuring the club in their August issue.

hile the club is primarily a boating organization, Commodore Ash explains it is really a club with a long maritime tradition that has opened itself to welcome people who may not own or desire a boat, but wish to participate in the excitement of a “place to belong and feel welcome.”

A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE think that the Senate is an unnecessary appendage of the government system but it could be very effective.

IN THE WINE INDUSTRY I think you really have to believe in what you’re doing.

MY GREATEST HAPPINESS has been the involvement with family and being able to make some kind of contribution to the community.

THEY SAY YOU CAN TAKE THE BOY OUT OF THE COUNTRY but not the country out of the boy, and I grew up on the orchards with my father and I thought the greatest calling that I could have was to come back and work in the industry.

THEY WERE THERE (GRANTS) and members of parliament could pursue them or not, and to me the job was to get our share for the region and more.

I MUST SAY I AM VERY UPSET with what I’ve seen going on these days because (The Senate) is an institution that has in the past done a lot of good.

NOW ONE OF MY INTERESTS is to keep pressing for the establishment of a national park in the South Okanagan.

WE WERE THERE TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE COUNTRY (during the Pearson Government) and I think all of us were somewhat proud and quite inspired by what was happening in the Kennedy era and what politics were all about in those days.

JEAN (CHRÉTIEN) WAS VERY MUCH THE LITTLE GUY from Shawinigan, and Trudeau was very much the worldly intellectual, but they both sort of had the same understanding for what Quebec was and what its values were.

ave you ever thought how it would be if someone just took away your smartphone for a day? If you weren’t connected constantly? If the only way you could get in touch with someone was by simply calling them or dropping by their house or office? Well…the young realtors at Vantage West Realty in Kelowna decided to find out the hard way and while they were at it raise some money for a great cause.

For the month of June, everyone at Vantage West went dark; they literally turned off all technology during the busiest month of the year for home sales. Opting for in-person service, Vantage went “Vintage”. For every single text message, tweet or email they were caught sending or responding to they pledged additional money towards the gospel mission.

The whole concept for this experiment came about when Vantage West’s founder A. J. Hazzi took that extra step and personally delivered an offer sheet to a client in his fifties instead of faxing it or e-mailing it. He was shocked at the impact of doing it personally and not relying on the expediency of technology.

“He couldn’t get over how nice it was that I took the time to deliver it personally and that is when the idea to go dark for June hit me.” says Hazzi.

With last year’s June figures for residential properties sold in the Central Okanagan at $154.3 million for 391 units (Vantage West claiming a whopping $5 million of that!), any agency knows the time for sales is June and that goes without saying for Vantage, but they had enough faith in traditional communication methods, the telephone and meeting one on one, to take this 64

experiment on in the hottest season for sales.

“Are we taking a risk here?” asks Hazzi. “Sure we are. June is the largest month in real estate, we have a young, techsavvy team at Vantage West and we are seeing growing trends of web searching with homebuyers. But we are betting that personal service will win over; that when homebuyers are ready to talk to an agent, they want to do that in person. You are making one of the most important decisions in your life – where your home is.”

The young realtors working at Vantage West are used to the “always-connected” lifestyle.

Computers, mobile phones, the Internet, social media tools and other technologies have been a mainstay since childhood so there were bound to be many lessons learned in such a long period of time without access to all the convenient devices they have grown so accustomed to! reduced to.

“Honestly, I do feel a little anxious; I’m never without my smartphone,” says Nick Hazzi, who at age 24 is the youngest agent working at Vantage. “This challenge forces us to focus on the personal relationship and that is the foundation of real estate selling. It’s also an opportunity to give back to our community and remind everyone that many don’t even have the basics in life – much less a smartphone.”

With the end of the month fast approaching we decided it would be important to get some perspective on exactly how life in the dark really worked out for the agents at Vantage West Realty so we caught up with founder AJ Hazzi and were able to get his outlook on the whole project.

We found that many things have changed around Vantage West, all in the name of customer service and ultimately a better client–agent relationship.

Company mandate has changed as well; all offers at Vantage West Realty will be presented and negotiated in person from now on. Gone are the days of relying on a scanner back and forth which sadly, for the most part the industry has been

What’s more, the agents at Vantage West have truly learned the value of a telephone call in place of text messaging as means of getting things done both with more efficiency and with fewer misunderstandings.

When asked, AJ said that he has

found that: “As a society we have shifted to a place where you can carry on a chat thread that has spanned over two hours just to communicate something that a two minute call could have wrapped up.

Also the amount of misunderstandings with texting is through the roof. Because most communication is not textual, people add all kinds of meaning and context to your messages…adding sarcasm or even hostility to a message that was intended to be nothing of the sort. A simple phone call fixes all of that. Better yet, connect for 5 minutes face to face, it may seem like it takes longer in the moment but it will go a long way to making sure things work out best for everyone. And believe it or not, it saves time in the end.”

“This was an interesting experiment to say the least. It really illuminated just how much the business world has evolved in the past decade. One thing for certain is that the professional community has no desire to return to a time without texting. This had to be the hardest one for us to accommodate. Many people become down right annoyed that you cannot just respond to them in their chosen medium. A phone call has become a highly archaic means of swapping information it would seem.

On the flip side some valuable lessons on customer service were learned indeed. There are just some things that should never be replaced with technology and central among those is the art of negotiation. There is a lot of power in presenting offers in person. Personal service will always be in style, taking that extra time to go see someone is the difference between helping someone through a transaction or actually forming a lasting relationship with them.

I thank everyone for humouring us through this challenging month, despite the trials and tribulations, having the opportunity to work with the gospel mission this month gave us all some much needed perspective, smart phone or not, we’ve all got it pretty good.” –AJ Hazzi

riginally from southern England, Lee has spent his lifetime in the food trade. His epicurean journey began at a young age on the family farm in Cornwall. At age 13, Lee started his culinary apprenticeship in a neighbourhood restaurant, cooking his way up into some of the finest restaurants in London; including Michelin rated, luxury Westbury Mayfair Hotel on Bond Street.

After six incredible years Lee’s sense of adventure and passion for the sea brought him to Canada’s west coast. Twice cooked pork belly with avocado puree, quinoa salad, lime and cilantro Pork belly 1lb pork belly 100 grams salt 50 grams sugar 1 sprig rosemary (chopped)

Method Mix all ingredients except veg oil. Sprinkle mixture on belly, both sides and refrigerate for 12 hours. Rinse pork belly. Place into pot and cover with veg oil. Cook at 275 for 3 hours until tender. Cool and remove from oil and set in fridge. Once cool portion into cubes, dip into tempura batter and fry until crispy

Avocado puree 2 x avocados 1 x lime Salt and pepper

Method Crush all ingredients with the back of a fork and season to Taste with salt and pepper

and bring to a simmer.

100 grams quinoa ½ onion finely diced 2 cloves garlic minced 1 carrot finely diced 6 tbsp olive oil 100ml water

Method Cook onions, carrot and garlic in olive oil. Add quinoa.

Add water and cook until boils. Simmer for 2 minutes.

Remove and cover withy seran wrap and allow to steep.

Season with salt and pepper.

Serves 5.

Corn puree 250 grams fresh corn kernels 1 medium onion diced 2 cloves garlic 250 ml whipping cream Salt and pepper Method Sweat onions and garlic. Add corn and cook for 2 minutes. Add cream and bring to a simmer. Cook until corn is tender. Season to taste. Puree & pass through fine mesh.

Chicken consommé 2 litres chicken stock 3 egg whites 1/3 of a white onion 3 cloves garlic crushed 2 sprigs thyme ½ medium carrot chopped fine 1 tsp cumin seeds whole Method Mix all ingredients in a stainless steel bowl. Add to chicken stock.

Place in a stock pot and bring to the boil. As the stock heats the egg whites and vegetables will for a crust on the top of the chicken stock.

Once crust is formed gently simmer stock for 30 minutes. Pass through a pcs of cheese cloth ensuring the crust isn’t broken, you will be left with a crystal clear consommé.

Intrigue Wines Focus 2012 Riesling A “boutique winery making award winning wines in the Okanagan,” Intrigue Wines is one of the newer wineries in Lake Country and opened their wine shop in 2012. The story began when two couples, Jillian and Roger Wong, and Geri and Ross Davis, joined forces. Roger is the winemaker for Intrigue (and Gray Monk Winery) and joined the BC wine industry in 1995. Trained at several wineries and a VQA judge, you can see - or better yet taste - his passion in all of their wines. The “Focus” label, under which this 2012 Riesling is sold, is Roger’s certificate for a wine created with the best grape varietal for the region. Which, for the Okanagan region, he feels is RIESLING. The 2012 Riesling is a wonderful example that Canadian-made Riesling can easily compete with those from the old world. It’s subtle with the classic citrus and lime and some wonderful notes of tropical fruits. A fantastic wine for the summer, but hurry, they only produced 112 cases! At just under $20 this wine comes highly recommended and can be purchased at the winery, online and at several local Liquor Stores (please refer to their website.)

Quinta Ferreira 2008 Obra Prima This wonderful red wine is a true winner! No, seriously - there’s not enough space here to list all the awards that Quinta Ferreira’s Obra Prima won. The Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery is located in the heart of Oliver, the Wine Capital of Canada, on more than 20 picturesque and sundrenched acres of vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. It is the best of two worlds, owners John and Maria Ferreira laugh, a “Canadian Wine with a Portuguese Twist.” The Ferreiras moved to Canada from their native Portugal at a young age and purchased the orchard in 1979. But the passion of wine made them convert the orchard into a vineyard, with the first grapes planted in 1999.

The 2008 Obra Prima, Portuguese for “masterpiece”, is the winery’s flagship wine. A wonderful Bordeux blend it is the perfect companion to grilled meats. Its black cherry notes transition into more of coffee and sweet vanilla flavours with a nice long finish. Here’s a tip: We had the wine sit outside while we prepared the food, so the bottle warmed up a bit and we were impressed .. it definitely gets (even) better when it is a little warmer. The food we paired it with? Grilled lamb chops.

Only 820 cases were made, so better get a case, enjoy a bottle or two now and cellar the rest for 3 or 4 years.

Howling Bluff 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon Howling Bluff Winery’s first vines were planted in 2004 at the Summa Quies Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. After giving up his career in the investment industry, Luke Smith, together with son Daniel, followed his passion producing small lots of fine wines. Since their first vintage in 2006 the father-son team and their wines have received many awards. These include two (2009 and 2011) Lieutenant Governor Awards for Excellence in BC Wine and the 2010 Wine Access Magazine Red Wine of the Year for their Summa Quies Pinot Noir.

The 2012 Summa Quies Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon is sharp crisp, clean and sophisticated. “It’s taken me 5 years to get this wine back on track and I believe the wine will make new friends and old friends happy,” says Luke. It is an 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon blend from vines they planted on their Summa Quies vineyard in 2004, 2006 and 2009. 670 cases have been produced, and you should definitely get your bottles soon, we can see this one selling out fast.

The wine’s flavours are best described as passion fruit with some honey and vanilla hints. It leaves this wonderfully fresh sweetness with a touch of citrus. Exotic, and simply amazing for a warm summer night.

As for the food - we must admit we had it with fish and chips ... but some extremely good ones! Garlicky prawns and sharp cheeses will work well too.

Hainle Vineyards 2012 Grand Reserve Rosé The Deep Creek Wine Estate & Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery, located in Peachland, wrote history as being the first certified organic winery in Canada, and the birthplace of Ice Wine in North America. Their wines are traditionally handcrafted according to the Huber family wine purity law of 1856, which exceeds Canadian and International certified Organic winemaking standards.

The 2012 Grand Reserve Rosé is part of the “Peachland Wild Fire Release” series. The devastating fire in 2012 had burned most of the vines on the 12 acre vineyard originally planted by former owner Walter Hainle. Another 25 acre vineyard, the Deep Creek Vineyards, was saved. It is this vineyard that the grapes for this blend of Baco Noir, Zweigelt and Gamay Noir rose’ come from. It has been lightly filtered and aged in stainless steel tanks for 6 months on the wine lees. It’s a lighter dry fruity rose’ wine which is comparable to a southern Bordeaux Rose’ with lots of youthful fruit and refreshingly balanced acidity.

Although it is a great wine to drink whilst young it will age well. Oh, right, the food pairing. We must admit we had a hard time choosing the right dish here. But we found it! To be honest - we asked a Chef from Europe, and had him sample the wine. His recommendation? A creamy Polenta with roasted mushrooms!

“But use milk for the polenta,” he said, “and don’t forget the Parmesan cheese!”
