We all love the Okanagan Valley. For its sheer beauty. The lake, the orchards, the weather, the people. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and year after year more and more people find out about this little gem. Our wineries (and did you know that the Okanagan boasts nearly 82% of the total vineyard acreage in the province?) are consistently ranked among the worlds best at international competitions, and lately our distilleries get a lot of attention and recognition as well. Many globally operating companies have decided to call the Okanagan their home and we have many unique products and inventions being manufactured locally. Most recently atheletes Kelsey Serwa and Josh Dueck put Kelowna on the map and made us all very proud with their successes at the Sochi 2014 Olympic & Paralympic Games, and wellknown businessman and philanthropist W. Brett Wilson (Dragons’ Den) expanded his portfolio of business ventures by taking over the ownership of Global Fitness in Kelowna. But there is a lot more going on in the Okanagan that makes us certain that we are looking forward to a very bright future. Area 27, the racetrack project designed by Canadian racing legend Jacques Villeneuve, is scheduled to open its doors in 2015 in the South Okanagan, “Kelowna Mountain Bridges & Vineyards” just had their soft opening and hope to be in full swing very soon, and there are several other developments that will carry the name of our valley out to the world. At ICON we are very proud to be a showcase for the best the Okanagan has to offer. We feel honoured to have such a plethora of local talent to grace our pages and hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we enjoy presenting them to you.

Global Fitness Centre, Kelowna March 25, 2014 On March 25, 2014 owner W. Brett Wilson and the staff at Global Fitness & Racquet Centre in Kelowna held a fantastic RSVP members only party! Dressed in casual country attire, members were treated to some fabulous food and refreshments from a multitude of local vendors while enjoying beats provided by DJ INVIZIBLE. Staff as well as members had the opportunity to mingle in a more casual social environment while sipping on brews provided by Tree Brewing Co. or a selection of wine poured by Jennifer and the girls from the View Winery. Excitingly, the evening closed out with a presentation by owner W. Brett Wilson of Dragon’s Den fame and an amazing performance from Juno nominated artist Brett Kissel. Enchanted Ridge-side Retreat

I

t is a crisp spring morning in the awe inspiring place many of us are lucky enough to call home, the beautiful Okanagan Valley. As we drive through the Lower Mission area of Kelowna, it brings back a multitude of incredible memories, mornings biking or walking to elementary school, afternoons stopping at the convenience store to grab some five cent candies waiting for our parents to pick us up after a day behind the books, or building forts in the surrounding woods with friends on the weekends.

These and so many more are the memories we personally took with us as we grew up and eventually left our family homes in the Mission. It’s beyond enjoyable to be flooded with such nostalgia as we snake our way up the hill along West Point Drive. Looking over our shoulders, the sun is just peaking over the mountains and its reflection is shimmering over the ripples of the immense body of water which we have all shared so many beautiful summers enjoying. Okanagan Lake stands a reminder of the infinite beauty that the Okanagan Valley offers, and just how truly lucky we are to wake up here every single morning. We are on our way to visit one of Jane Hoffman’s exquisite listings in the area, a fabulous traditional estate located in prestigious Woodland Hills overlooking the Lower Mission, the valley as well as the lake. Upon approaching the manor, we are immediately floored by the exquisite professional landscaping that surrounds to the front of the home.

Here we take notice of the immaculate finishing of the manor, crown mouldings and fine wood work accent each space creating an exceedingly cozy ambience. To the immediate left we find a secluded office space, perfect for the home business owner to catch up on paperwork or just get away from the rest of the family. To the right we find the family room, located on the main level adjoining the formal dining room this area offers plenty of space, to sit, relax and enjoy a glass of wine or read a book while the fire dances in the fireplace before you on those cool spring evenings.

Resort style living. Custom infinity edge pool and spa featuring a swim up wet-bar.

cabana with fireplace and even an outdoor kitchen space that overlook the valley and lake below are just a few of the luxuries that await us here. It is very easy to imagine ourselves enjoying a cocktail on a sunny summer afternoon here. Back indoors, we find the master suite on the main level, overlooking the valley below and the lake ahead, this is truly a one of a kind retreat. A large gas fireplace is the centerpiece here directly in front of the enormous king size bed. On the way to the adjoining en suite bathroom, we move through the custom walk-in closet with ample storage for even the most dedicated fashion aficionado. In the en suite we are treated to a luxurious soaker tub, granite countertops, his and hers sinks, elegant custom vanity and a separated water closet with a private walk in shower. Upstairs, the estate offers two additional private sleeping quarters boasting extravagant views of the lake and valley that surrounds as well as a well-appointed laundry room featuring a funky colour scheme and high efficiency appliances that get the job done right while minimizing energy use. what appears to be the most incredible shop we have seen to date. Multiple flat screen televisions adorn the walls of this space, while a poker table sits to the right of a fully equipped wet bar/kitchen area. This shop offers more than enough storage for even the most dedicated professional mechanic, let alone a weekend hobbyist or collector. If that is not enough the space boasts an area specifically designed to showcase a custom chopper or two while offering enough space to securely store up to 15 vehicles. It is not often that we come upon a home that truly delivers everything one could possibly desire, but in this case we have. It truly is a shame stepping out of this fantasyland and back into reality…if only we could stay…even just for one night. The memories undoubtedly would last a lifetime!

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

WHAT IS A MAN? When talking about being a gentleman, I am often asked if a gentleman can be “manly.” I guess that begs the question: What is a man? In a society full of stereotypes and labels, it wouldn’t be unusual to think being “manly” is about being strong, rugged, and tough. It is about not showing feelings, avoiding things that are “gay,” and all the other ridiculous characteristics and behaviors. We can tell you this with absolute certainty: Being a man is about strength, but so much more than physical strength. If you can drink whiskey, smoke cigars, and drive a huge lifted truck, you may be a man. If you also believe however, that a guy who likes anything different is less of a man, or that a guy should never cry, you are not a man. You are more like a Neanderthal with some money. That insecure, hyper-masculine, un-evolved character we have created is the problem. A man can be defined in many ways, but the truth is it can be quite simple. We will skip the anatomy associated with the definition and go right to what it means to be a man. It is about the spirit of manliness. What you enjoy or what tendencies you have are not necessarily what determine how “manly” you are. You may be into cars, construction and hunting, but it doesn’t make you more of a man than someone who likes theatre, art and cooking. The truth is even those examples illustrate the most common

stereotypes. Are you the redneck or the artsy guy? A true man has strong character and is the epitome of maturity.

“Manhood is the defeat of childhood narcissism” - David Gilmore If you can chop down a tree, and swap an engine out of a car, but you can’t can’t tell your wife you love her in front of your buddies, you are not a man. If you can bench press twice your weight, and you will fight anyone, but you can’t admit you like a romantic movie, you are not a man. In short, a man is a person who knows who he is, is confident in who he is, and who will not compromise who he is because of insecurities or fear of judgment. It is truly an evolved state to carry yourself with that confidence but also to respect and care for others around you. The art of being strong is really about one’s ability to be soft when it is called for. So in pretty much every way, a gentleman and a man are exactly the same thing. With all that said however, you aren’t a man if you don’t have “Truck Nutz” on your vehicle. Sorry.

HOW TO ...

BUY AN INVESTMENT WATCH 5 Tips for Buying the Right Watch As a pawnshop owner and watch broker I find clients often ask me what makes a watch a good investment. They’ve heard the stories of the mid-seventies Rolex’s that retailed for a few hundred dollars now valued in the low six figures. They know of the limited edition Breitling’s that have doubled in value within 6 months after being released. On top of that they love what is on their wrists and impression it garners from co-workers, clients, and that friend you always seem to be slightly competing with. The reality of the watch market today, especially in our recovering economy, is that there are some amazing investment time-pieces out there, for great prices, as long as you know what to look for and what you need to especially avoid. Here are my five rules to buy an investment watch. 1. Brand Names Only, and avoid the mall. Brands such as Nixon, Rip Curl, Gucci, Esquire and even more established brands like Movado, Rado, and Bulova look great in the department store or in the mall, but as soon as you leave you’re going to be stuck with it, just like you will be with those jeans from the Gap. The watch game is not like the stock market, so don’t look at them like a portfolio you can short sell and day trade. A properly crafted timepiece is an asset that should be seen as a value investment, so I am always weary of new comers to the market such as designer brands selling watches. While that exciting new wristwatch start up may be flashy and feature amazing design work it is not proven and in all likelihood will go the way of most young companies in a crowded marketplace. These brands are building fashion watches, and any aficionado will tell you to save your money and instead of having 4 or 5 mid grade department store time pieces go big and buy even an entry level luxury watch. 2. Swiss made. Period. While the watches that are coming out of Japan and North America are catching up with the technology of Swiss craftsmanship, nothing compares to the quality of work coming from Switzerland. This country is and will likely always be the leader of horology and horological manufacturing. Anything less will not see the same return. 3. Automatic Movements Only Watches with quartz movements will just not do. While Breitling and Omega have put out some of their more popular models with battery operated guts they simply don’t hold

their value like an automatic movement will. The reason is because they are just not built to last. The beauty of horology is that a small machine on your wrist is so carefully calibrated that by just moving your body it is able to power itself and keep perfect time for years. If you want to acquire a watch that will go up in value, cheaping out on something that needs a battery, no matter the brand name, will not take you far. 4. Buy Second Hand or if you rather “Pre-Loved” Just like a collectors car or a well made guitar there is always a brief depreciation period in any new asset. Watches, like all jewellery are priced a little bit high on the retail front so that the jewellery store makes its share. Just like when you drive your car off the lot a watch will lose some of it’s value. That said there are some great options, especially in Kelowna to buy pre-owned and fully reconditioned watches allowing the buyer to skip the depreciation cost. My only warning about buying a used watch is the vast number of high quality replicas that are popping up on the market. For this reason alone I avoid buying watches on eBay and Kijiji. My best advice is to come to a guy like myself, or a reputable watch seller and ask for the models they have available and see what they can order for you. Many people don’t know that most jewelry stores and watch shops have a network of reputable brokers that can get them almost any watch at great prices. 5. Remember the Intrinsic Value of you investment A luxury watch is first and foremost a status symbol, which every investor is going to need to remember. We have clocks everywhere, our cellphone, the car, the microwave, what keeps the luxury watch market booming is the fact that the equity of a watch is not based on its ability to be a tool for telling time. Things you should always consider when buying a watch is not only how it makes you look, or what its worth, but how does it make you feel. For some the diamond encrusted Rolex can cost an arm and a leg, make you feel like a million bucks, but it may have the wrong effect on the client you want to impress while a vintage Omega that is a 10th the price will go great with anything and impress any watch snob. My advice is to calculate the intrinsic value of the watch into its investment capacity; will it get you more respect, will it make you feel on top of the world? These are things that you can’t put a price on but are definitely things to consider when investing in a watch. Dylan Lenz

Dylan Lenz is the owner of Downtown Pawnbrokers in Kelowna, BC. He is the youngest pawnshop owner in Canada and a self proclaimed watch snob. Dylan has been watch broker since he was seventeen, he personally owns an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, Rolex Submariner Double Red, and a Mickey Mouse sing along watch his mom gave him for his 6th birthday.

W. BRETT

by Rick Maddison

Wilson W. Brett Wilson, Member of Order of Canada, is a Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist and threeseason panelist on CBC’s “Dragons’ Den”. Wilson has various business interests globally including the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League. He recently has acquired 100% of Global Fitness & Racquet Centre in Kelowna. R: Global Fitness is a prime piece of real estate and rumours are you bought this just to develop the land. Is that true?

ended for all practical purposes and I was focused on one thing - the job. Work, the dollars and those things were really taking me down.

BW: We’ve got several acres in the back that are stranded. They’re useless now and if I could find another use for that land, I’d do it in a heartbeat. But you know, I own the building 100%; I therefore own the business 100%.

Cancer in a sense gave me permission to say “No” to anyone that was demanding my time. Not my friends and my family, it was my partners and my clients who I had to learn to say “No” to. That was the fun stuff - you make a buck, but every time I turned around it would be 11:00pm on a Sunday night and they’d ask, oh, can we get this report done by 7 tomorrow morning?

We lease to Dakodas and we have a long term lease with them so I don’t have any intention of developing this different. I mean, talk to me in 25 years and then maybe my children will go, “Ahh...I don’t know.” But again, we can make a fair rate of return by running this business effectively. You know, I’ve spent over a million dollars on this building. If our plan was to tear it down, I would have just torn it down because that would have cost me only a quarter of a million. So, no. R: What lesson did you learn when you were battling cancer? BW: You know sometimes, the greatest take away I can describe is that I call myself a cancer graduate. The concept of a cancer survivor is acceptable to me. People use it all the time, there are cancer survivor groups and workshops, but for me the word survivor implies that I barely made it. I swam to shore, I’m lying on the beach, and I can’t believe I made it. Well in my case, cancer may have saved my life. I was in a downward spiral in terms of my work life and whatever else that I had. I had no relationship with my children, my marriage had 18

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

So I’d call two of my guys, we’d head into the office, work until four in the morning, sleep on the couch and then we’d be live. That sort of thing needed to end, so that’s why I find it is an empowering term to say that I am a cancer graduate. I will admit that I have my Bachelor’s. I don’t want my Masters but I will say with empowerment that if I have to go back to school, I’m ready. So again, for me “Graduate” is just a stronger, more forward term. R: How do people know when they are tipping towards being a workaholic? BW: Gosh, you might have a period where you’re an 8, 9, or 10 in terms of being imbalanced and focused on your business. But it’s a big part of why in the book I call it Redefining Success. For me it was so narrow. It was just wealth and all the trappings of wealth and power and status. But what if you had a broader definition of success, where it includes happiness, it includes your relationship with your family, it

includes your health? I mean a great success is to live to 100. You’ve got people who are very successful in business who die at 60. Well, who’s happier? I suspect the guy that got 40 more years out of it. I’m not suggesting for a moment that in the materialistic, capitalist world that we live in that there’s anything fundamentally wrong with wanting more, but maybe if it’s in the single minded pursuit of only wanting more. There’s a great line in a movie with Aristotle Onassis and it involved a conversation with Jackie Kennedy. You could tell that she had said, how much is enough, when am I going to get more of your time? And his response was he took his cigar out of his mouth and pounded his fist on the table and said MORE, MORE is enough! And I tell you, 20 years ago I looked at that and said, wow, love that attitude. That’s power, that’s future thinking so all the essence of what I want. Now I look back and think, what a pathetic answer. He had one of the most wonderful people asking for more of his time and all he wanted was to make more money. He clearly had way more than he’ll ever need and all he wanted to do is make more. So that’s my point when I am talking to students, or I’ll look at kids coming up to me at Christmas and they’re buying my book for their father, or fathers are coming and buying my book for their son. They’re both taking a pot shot at each other saying you either need a little more motivation or you need a little more balance in your life, because I respect both. This book was not written about how to be wealthier; it was really SPRING 2014

market but its factory approved - no lift kit, no nothing. All there is, is a little lever on the floor and four wheel drive.

R: Will Shea Weber go down as one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game?

I put better rims on, a better tire package and then I added every option: embedded lighting in the front dash, embedded lighting in the rear, hidden radar detectors, seat heaters and upgraded every speaker. There is a subwoofer, drop down DVD and every imaginable extra is on that thing. And as goofy as it sounds, I’ve had a 15 passenger van for the past 15 years, and it’s the greatest family car imaginable. When I was travelling with 3 kids, each could bring a friend, the dog and there was space for anything. So that is vehicle number one. It’s a monster in sheep’s clothing in terms of what it’s capable of doing, so it’s just kind of fun.

BW: I hope he goes down as the greatest defenseman ever and helps mentor the next greatest defenseman as well, because we have Seth Jones coming in as his shadow. With Shea it was frustrating when we got hung up on contract issues - the kind of money and kind of style of contract. But to be fair, he and his agent were doing what was normal, I wasn’t impressed with the Philadelphia Flyers and I wasn’t impressed with the overall operation of the League around that. But I don’t control that, it’s a League decision. I don’t really think it was in the interest of the League to have all these contracts being signed before we went into negotiations. That just didn’t make business sense to me, but again I don’t control the League and I’m just a minority interest as an owner. Once Shea was signed on, I had a little bit of a lingering concern that he was playing for the money, but it’s pretty clear he’s playing for heart. His leadership on the ice, in the locker room and in the community is extraordinary; this is a guy that’s an anchor part of the team. So when you have Pekka Rinne, Shea Weber and a couple of our snipers - I’m pretty pleased with that package. When we made playoffs last year, you know the team is on the cusp. R: ICON readers like watches and cars. What are some of your favourites? BW: I’ve got 8 to 10 watches that I would consider really high end, and another 20 that are great, every day watches, so I’m proud of those. But I don’t wear them very much. What I’m looking forward to is the next iteration of the Apple watch in terms of the technology and as a communication tool. In terms of vehicles, I have three now. The one I’m proudest of is a brand new, 15 passenger van, fully loaded, with all the toys that I had converted to a four wheel drive truck. So it’s in the after20

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

And then, as one of my primary cars I have the new Mercedes GL which is the AMG version of the GL. It is 550 horsepower and it’s one of the sweetest rides I’ve ever experienced. The toys and technology that Mercedes has put in from adaptive cruise control to night vision, the seats, it’s just a great, great ride. Then the last vehicle I own: I was over in Darby watching the soccer team I’ve invested in and discovered that Crewe was only an hour away. Crewe is where Bentley makes their cars. So we popped over to Crewe and the vehicle I had just ordered had been shipped the day before, so we missed it. Then from Crewe we went to a place in Northern Finland where we went racing Bentleys on ice. There were eight different race tracks set up and it was run by one of the top European rally car drivers. We could do figure 8’s, loops, chicanes, circles. We would do just about anything. My son and I, and one of my business partners went and there is nothing cooler than having four wheels spinning. They put winter tires on and stud them, and then just say put the pedal down. You cannot damage the cars because all you’re going to do is go into a snow bank. They had two tractors that were continuously pulling us out of the snow bank, putting us back on the track and then we were pedal down again. So when I got back to Canada, I had an incredible passion for Bentley. So I own a Bentley GT.

The Bentley and the Benz are the two cars I use most of the time and I love both of them. They’re both brand new and I’ll get 5-10 years out of those. R: What investment opportunities do you think exist in the Okanagan? BW: I think one of the businesses that people have underestimated is catering to an aging population, either servicing or housing. There are incredible opportunities for both here. I was driving around the city this morning and I was pretty impressed with the amount of activity. You know, this is not the same town of five years ago, six years ago. This is a new environment and I like it. R: How involved do you get in deals done through Dragon’s Den? BW: It varied widely. I did 60 deals on air, of that I papered 30. But to be fair to the 30, even though it is only half, the other Dragons did a total of two deals each in the time I did those 30. I took a chance on a lot of people. Now out of those 30 deals, I bet ten of them were dead within six months. Ten are in the Monty Python phase which is where they say (in a British accent), “I’m not dead yet”, well you will be. So it’s only a question of time. But the other ten are actually pretty interesting and there’s about two or three of those that could easily pay for the whole portfolio, so that was unexpected.

Korean for Luxury ! THE ALL-NEW 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS

“This is the GENESIS of what’s next: Innovative safety technology, striking design and inspired craftsmanship. Welcome to what’s next in premium automobiles.”

Crafted to exceed expectations, the completely redesigned 2015 Genesis is excitement in motion. It delivers balanced performance and intelligent new technology. It was in 2009 that Hyundai started the ambitious project to target top-tier luxury brands such as BMW, Cadillac and Mercedes, and we were quite surprised when we test-drove the 2012 Hyundai Genesis (see ICON xxx). Packed with features and convincingly upscale, the Genesis proved it can play in the same arena, but many criticised its looks to be too close to that of a Mercedes (which, to be honest, we did not mind at all!). Well, what can we say, we recently had the chance to have a look at the second-generation Genesis, which not only refines the original formula ... but adds a very unique and distinctive style. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s start the engine! Hyundai calls the 2nd generation’s new style “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0” ... ok, whatever. Fact is – it looks amazing! Just have a look at those clean, more-subtle lines with its nice brushed-aluminum accents (there is no chrome inside or out!). The new model is 0.2 inches longer, and the wheelbase has grown by three inches, giving the impression of a longer hood while allowing for the trendy sloping roofline. But let’s start at the front. Dominated by a bold hexagonal grille with horizontal slats, optional HID headlights with LED turn signals, the designers sculpted the whole car with a

raised bodyline that bisects the front and rear door handles before running into the LED taillights, giving the Genesis a sleeker profile for a more coupe-like appearance. We like it! A lot! Around back, it is the quad oval exhaust tips replacing the dual rounded rectangular tips that we like best. The Interior “Spacious and comfortable”, that’s how Hyundai describes it. We call it “clean and contemporary”, but what sets it apart is the technology. One of the exciting new features is the Google search technology for the voice-activated navigation system. Another new tech feature is the comptibility with Apple’s Siri, which allows users to use some of their iPhone’s functions via voice commands without having the phone in hand. Anyways – the fit and finish is second to none, with ergonomic seat design (the Genesis seats offer 12way power front seats, including 4-way power lumbar, heated front seats with available ventilation) and a generous, natural feel. And with a total interior volume of 123.0 cubic feet, it clearly trumps its competitors and provides best-in-class front headroom and rear shoulder room. Oh, right - Genesis passengers are also sure to appreciate the enhanced perspective of their surroundings via the new available panoramic sunroof.

The Engine Engine offerings remain similar to the outgoing model, as the 2015 Genesis Sedan will offer up both the high-efficiency Lambda 3.8-liter V-6 engine generating an estimated 311 hp and 293 ft.-lbs. of torque, and the award-winning Tau five-litre V8, delivering a slightly-reduced 420 horsepower (383 ft.-lbs. of torque). Both engines will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Drivetrain The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is offered with a choice of rear-wheel-drive or (and to the delight of many Canadian shoppers) a new and optional all-wheel-drive (called HTRAC), which uses an electronic, variable-torque-split clutch with active torque control to shift power between the front and rear wheels. Hyundai says that with HTRAC AWD on board, Genesis drivers can expect consistently confident performance, regardless of road conditions.

And so much more ... The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is generously equipped with many new, advanced technologies ... too many to list. So here’s a quick (but not complete) overview ... Intelligent Drive Modes, Emergency Steering Support Mode, Parking Assistance System, Blind-Spot Detection system, Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with stop-start functionality, front-grille-mounted radar sensors, a High-Beam Assist (HBA) function, Automatic Emergency Braking, Smart Trunk (automatic hands-free actuation when the smart key is detected near the rear bumper for more than 3 seconds) ... as we said - too many features to list or even explain. One more thing that shows Hyundai’s attention to detail: The mirror-mounted puddle lamps shine the Genesis logo onto the ground below the vehicle. Very cool! Anyway - here’s what we can highly recommend: Go and see Kelowna Hyundai and let them not only explain all the features to you, but put you right behind the wheel of this marvellous vehicle!

Experience - Excellence - Aesthetics Brian D. Peterson, MD

Plastic Surgery in the Okanagan has changed a lot in the past 20 years. After completing his training through UBC in Vancouver and further specialty training in Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery and Breast Reconstruction, Dr. Brian Peterson started his practice in Kelowna in 1992. ‘I saw great opportunity to expand the practice of Plastic Surgery in the Okanagan by introducing microsurgery as well as the implementation of more advanced techniques of breast reconstruction and aesthetic plastic surgery than was being practiced at that time.’ ‘Very quickly, the ability to perform aesthetic surgery at Kelowna General Hospital became impossible because of long surgical wait times, and limited operating room access. Patients requesting cosmetic surgery could not be given priority, so in 1996 I developed the Okanagan Plastic Surgery Centre – a private surgical facility with full general anesthesia capabilities, accredited as a Class 1 surgical facility by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. This allowed me to develop and expand my aesthetic surgical practice without the limitations of the public health care system.’ Within a couple of years the Okanagan Plastic Surgery Centre expanded to perform surgical procedures for Worksafe B.C. A second operating room was added, and the centre was eventually relocated to the Okanagan Health building at 3320 Richter St. in 2004 where there are now three operating rooms and recovery rooms with a picturesque view of the Okanagan from its 4th floor location. All five of the Okanagan’s only Plastic Surgeons have their offices there. With the growth of interest in Aesthetic Surgery and also the demand for non-surgical procedures, Dr. Peterson started the Okanagan Skin Care Centre in 1995. ‘We pioneer in the field of non-surgical aesthetic techniques. Prior to this no specialists were offering these services in the Okanagan.’ This business was originally based on facial chemical peels and Botox treatments. Now, under the guidance of the Plastic Surgeons there are six full time Registered Nurses working in our skin care division providing services that include Botox and Advanced Skin Care Treatment, as well as Facial Fillers to enhance lips, lines, hollows and numerous Laser treatments for Hair Removal, Ablation of Facial Blood Vessels, Skin Resurfacing/Pigmentation etc. ‘My practice has grown immensely, and I now limit new patients to those requesting Aesthetic Surgery, however I maintain privileges and provide on-call services at Kelowna General Hospital.’ Reviewing the current Aesthetic Surgery numbers provided by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which Dr. Peterson is a member of, they show that 28

over the past 20 years non-surgical procedures have outpaced the increase in surgery. While surgery has increased 89%, non-surgical procedures have increased 521%. ‘In my practice, Breast Augmentation is the most popular surgical procedure. However, in addition I also perform many other surgical procedures such as Body Contouring with Liposuction and Tummy tucks, as well as a large number of Facial Aesthetic Surgeries including Facelifts, Eyelid Surgery and Rhinoplasty or Nasal surgery’. ‘Globally, it is a multi-billion dollar business. With that, this opens the door to many untrained professionals wanting to capitalize on this opportunity. That is why it is so critical to check the credentials of the physician you are entrusting your care to. Anyone can take care of you if things go well, but only Board Certified Plastic Surgeons can ensure you are taken care of properly should any complications arise.

Dr. Peterson BSc, MD, FRSC, FACS is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. He is Past President of the Canadians Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as the Northwest Society of Plastic Surgery. How Not To Divorce Yourself In A Relationship ~ Gary Douglas, Founder, Access Consciousness®

H

ow many people do you know that when they start a relationship change who they are in order to keep their partner happy? What if this is actually an express ride to a broken relationship rather than the creation of something greater, which is what we could be shooting for? As soon as a relationship starts, a lot of people start making subtle changes to the way they act and the things they do. Often times, these changes are completely unsolicited and come from an individual’s idea of what they think their partner wants from them. What I have seen time and time again, is someone voluntarily changing their actions and behaviors because they think it will please their partner. In actual fact, what often happens is the partner wakes up one day and realizes that you’re no longer the person they fell in love with. Don’t assume your partner wants you to do or be anything - be yourself. People who are functioning from unawareness in their relationships often find themselves at the effect of all of the expectations, projections and judgments about the relationship – their own, their partners’ and from the world in general. It’s not surprising it gets messy! You can however, change this by asking questions of your partner and yourself. Questions empower and open the door to more awareness of possibilities “What is it that I would truly like to choose here?” “What have I given up being or doing that is truly me?” Then you can ask, “If I chose to be or do that again, what would my life be like in 5 years? SPRING 2014

And if I don’t choose to be or do that again, what will my life be like in 5 years?” Get a sense of the energy and know that is your awareness of what will get created in your life by that choice. “What is required here for this to work with ease?” “What if there is no right or wrong here? What else could be possible?” What is interesting is that when a couple is free to be themselves, they often end up closer. Forget fairy tale endings - be honest if the relationship isn’t right for you. Another way people kid themselves about whether the relationship is working out is when they cut off their awareness of how the relationship is actually going to turn out. They have some crazy idea that a relationship with this person will be so entertaining and so fun when it just won’t be! I always ask people, “What if you would be willing to be aware of what is actually going on, rather than what you would like the relationship to be?” If you don’t have any judgment of what your relationship should be, then you can create it, or end it if you choose, with ease.

When both people have allowance for each other, which is where everything is included and nothing is judged, then both of you can be yourselves without fear of being judged or made wrong. It takes courage to be this different in relationship, and when you do choose it you might just find that this contributes to creating the divorceless relationship you’ve been seeking! Gary Douglas is the author of several books including Sex is Not a four Letter Word But Relationship Often Times is and Divorceless Relationships. He will be in Vancouver hosting an evening class- Playing with Sex & Love As a Battleground For a Meaningful Life, on 8th May at Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown. Profile by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie

If the words ‘modelling agency’ immediately make you think exclusively of large urban fashion centres like Paris and New York, think again. Deja Vu Model Management, located in Kelowna, is a local agency that has been sourcing and developing models in the Okanagan for over 17 years. The agency provides faces for local work, as well as launching girls (and boys) into major markets like Tokyo, Milan, and Toronto.

In addition to scouting locally, prospective models also sometimes approach Sabrina to see if they have what it takes. Notte says the key is height. Girls need to be at least 5’6” to work in the Asian markets, and 5’7” for anywhere else. They also need to be a standard sample size. However, the agency is very proactive about ensuring that her girls reach this size in a healthy manner.

“We’re a small agency; we’re boutique. We don’t have 700 people on our books,” explains owner Sabrina Notte. “We’re small and we know everybody’s name. That’s the great thing about us.”

“We really talk about healthy eating, and cardio and working out. Your body is a business and you have to keep it fueled and healthy.” explains Sabrina. “We obviously want to stay away from losing weight with crash diets and things. We don’t believe in that at the agency. We can tell when a girl is naturally thin and when they are approaching it not in the right way.” The agency also stresses the value of school. “Education is important in this business. Very few people make a lifelong career out of it, so you need to have something to fall back on.”

Sabrina (who has been in charge of the agency for a year) was a model herself, starting here in Kelowna with the agency, which was originally called Allan International. After her own successful career in places like Milan, Notte came back to teach for the agency, so when the previous owners decided to move onto new things and put the agency up for sale, she was the first person they called. “I’ve always had a big passion for having my own agency,” she says, “and for working with models and developing them.” Deja Vu is what is known in the business as a ‘mother agency’, which is a middleman for models - discovering them, developing their skills and helping them build their books in order to be contracted by larger agencies in the fashion world. Notte finds her models everywhere: at the mall, the beach and also in other local centres like Kamloops and Vernon.

Locally, Notte explains, there is “lots of fun work. Models get to meet lots of great people and do really fun stuff.” Fashion shows account for a lot of the local work, like the recent Jason Matlo show at the ‘Designer Digs’ charity event. Deja Vu also signed twelve of its models to walk the runways at Vancouver’s AW2014 Fashion Week; several making it onto the pages of British Vogue in coverage of the event.

Sabrina currently has about 20 models on her books locally, and about 36 models working internationally via agencies like: Wilhemena, Bangkok; Avenue One, Tokyo; and Elite, Toronto, to name a few. For example, local models Emilee (who was featured in Icon’s Fall 2013 issue) and Mitchell have recently been taken on by ICE in Milan and Major Models in New York respectively. “The only places I haven’t signed models are in Paris and Australia,” Sabrina laughs.

Additionally, Deja Vu does a lot of work with local arts college CATO (Centre for Arts and Technology). “I know at first student photographers, or people who wanted to do creative projects, were afraid to approach us because they were worried about working with an ‘agency’. But we’re not like that,” says Sabrina. “I’m a Kelowna girl. One of the main things I teach my models is no matter how big you get, always remember where you’re from. And always remember the people who helped you get to where you are. I truly believe that. If we help photographers and they make it someday, they’ll remember us because we got them there. Everybody can help each other. Especially in a smaller community.”

“We like to scout between the ages of 11 and 19, but we might take models older than 19 if they have a really great look,” explains Notte. Surprisingly, older also works better in the Okanagan, where a lot of work is ‘lifestyle’ rather than fashion oriented, and clients want more mature models.

Spring Is Sprung ... the grass is riz, I wonder where the fashion is? Here in Icon Okanagan, that’s where. We’ve checked out the hottest catwalks in New York, London, Paris and Milan to bring you a distillation of the latest and greatest from the international collections, and a little bit of local (advance) knowledge as well. But first, let’s talk global trends. In Black and White: whether in contrasting stripes at Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors, black and white prints at Diane von Furstenberg, mix of black and white textiles in elegant figurehugging dresses at Roland Mouret or simple pairing of contrasting tops and bottoms at Ralph Lauren and Jil Sander, the high contrast of these two polar opposites is currently setting fashion pulses racing.

Jutta Anderson, Justin Paul Fashions: “Justin Paul is welcoming spring 2014 with classic and effortless clothing with a trendy twist. Black and white is the main theme, punctuated with splashes of orange. Prints are also important this season, including pop-art pieces to update any wardrobe.”

Super Sheen: whether full-on metallic or subtle iridescence, gleam was a key word at Altuzara, MaxMara, Gucci and Saint Laurent.

Calvin Klein

Insider Tips: some ‘must haves’ for SS14 include bomber jackets, new calf-skimming ‘mid-length’ skirts, cropped mid-rifts (start pilates classes now), slogan or typographic tee-shirts, one shouldered necklines, origami pleats and fringing. Also try ‘inverse buttoning’. Button the first few top buttons of your shirt and leave the rest open to create a floaty tailored look.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Mel Harris, Cream: “We have never seen so many girls chopping there locks and going for the shorter looks - bobs and lobs of all shapes and textures are hot. Ombré hair continues to be the most asked for color technique but the shades difference is less noticeable, it’s more of a color melt!”

Celine Jonathan Saunders

Art Prints: bold brush-strokes, painterly prints and grafitti’esque design adorn Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Celine’s collections, and the bolder the better.

Reed Krakoff

Laura Draycott, Wink i Wear: “As with any fashion trend the key is always to go for the style that suits you – both in terms of your face shape and your personal style – but beyond that 2014 is going to be hot for colored mirrored sunglass lenses. Vibrant blue is the #1 pick (and also a very popular frame color), because it stands out the most, but other popular reflective lens choices are metallic gold, pink, or silver.”

Peek-a-boo: areas of transparency (think organza, chiffon, mesh or lace) create subtle sexiness at Celine, Burberry, Giambattista Valli and McQueen.

Emilio Pucci

Local Knowledge:

Angie Bricker Shaw, Georgie Girl: “Hot for spring is mixing vintage with modern in quirky, fun and innovative ways. Watch the runways for an eclectic mix of prints and fabrics paired with funky socks, a hint of lace…and a way of pulling it all together that is YOUR personal signature…”

On Your Mark: Athleticism is given a fashion twist on catwalks like Galliano, Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Pucci, Balenciaga and Alexander Wang. Think racer-backs, gym shorts and racing stripes topped off with ultra-modern visor hats a lá Marni.

Alberta Ferretti

By Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie

Tracey Wikenheiser, La Bonne Vie: “This season florals will be seen on everything from denim to bomber jackets. Bright, techno and pastel. Full blooms and pretty gardens prints are a welcome addition to our closets after the long dull winter we have endured.”

The Rainbow Connection: at the opposite end of the colour spectrum, the entire colour spectrum is exploding on the catwalk. Think head-to-toe primaries, colour-blocked brights or multi-coloured creations, featuring on catwalks like Alberta Ferretti, Prada and newcomer Emilia Wickstead. Denim blues show up on catwalks at Balmain and Max Mara and are also a big menswear trend at Dior, Hermes and Dior.

Under Fashion… The Underwear that you show the world! Ever wake up from a bad dream about being out in public in nothing but your underwear? Then swimsuit season comes along and you feel like your dream has turned into reality.

ATTENTION PRIMA DONNA BRA FANS! Prima Donna has finally jumped into the Pool with their first Swimwear Line every suit has a built in Prima Donna Bra! Available Spring 2014

No matter what their shape or size, most women dread looking for a swimsuit. Personally I don’t so much have a problem with how I look in a swimsuit, (my body and I came to a loving peaceful agreement years ago), what plagues me is the lack of practicality that one finds in a vast majority of swimwear in the market place. Strategically placed triangles doesn’t cut it for my body! Lingerie and swimwear are siblings - all the key ingredients that you need in great fitting lingerie you need in great fitting swimwear. For women this usually means swimwear that has built in bra support. The next thing is a suit design that is practical to you and fits your body. Here are a few key points to look for in a great bathing suit. (Note: If you don’t have a great fitting bra then please go to a lingerie boutique and get a bra fitting.) What do you use your suit for ? There is a big difference in swimsuits designed for swimming and activity and those meant for sunbathing. We have all been there, jump into a pool or lake with a suit designed for sunbathing and then get to spend a few minutes of panic trying to figure out where your swimsuit went! Coverage! A little more coverage in a swimsuit is usually more flattering. Swimsuits have to be “Snug” when you purchase them because body heat , sunshine and water all make swimsuits stretch a bit. Choosing shapes that may cover a little more but don’t need to be constantly readjusted, even after a bit of stretching allow you to present a more confident figure. Investment. I always keep two swimsuits in my wardrobe. A great fitting swimsuit that I have invested in because it fits me as well as my best fitting underwear. I wear this suit at the beach and on vacation I also keep an older suit that frankly isn’t my favorite fit but I’m not worried if my friends hot tub water corrodes it away. Don’t be surprised - good swimwear typically costs about the same as a comparable quality bra & panty set.

If you have a favorite bra company, do some research to see if they have a swimwear line. Most of the best fitting suits I have seen on women are generally produced by manufacturers who also produce fine lingerie. Start with the bust fit - if the bust fits properly and supports, it immediately elongates the torso. No matter what style of swimsuit you end up in please stand up straight! Good Posture smoothes out more than the best shaper suit!

PINOT - PEOPLE - PLACE

MEET ME AT THE 50TH

A

high-energy couple from Calgary is building a one-of-a kind wine focused hospitality venture in the Central Okanagan Valley… and you are going to want to put this place on your bucket(s) list.

Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel of 50th Parallel Estate are creating a world-class wine destination only 15 minutes from the Kelowna airport by crafting international award winning wines, all while offering exclusive and sexy agri-tourisim accommodation, hosting five-star events, and offering viti-crafted spa treatments. Naturally they go hand-in-hand…Detox-Retox…Repeat.

Czech and Slovak parents, with an obviously scarce blue-blood-line to some great Austrian winemaking families. Not quite a gypsy, but did you take a second look at that hair? Yes it’s real. Curtis was raised in Edmonton before coming to Calgary in 1997 and starting an oil and gas engineering services company, similar but really different to building a vineyard.

vineyards in the world (yes including Burgundy, AND Bordeaux). Internationally the world is waking up to the growing number of award winning wines coming from this place, and the development will honor the praise. Everything you see, feel, and taste is focused on the wine, and the special place it comes from. The name itself was chosen to represent such a unique and real physical location, a meeting place, that people will understand the minute they see the property. This will be a sanctuary that you can truely come and stay and just get away from everything, except the endless views of vineyards and Lake Okanagan. The property truly has it all including a public waterfront playground at popular Coral Beach, named for it’s pink granite shoreline generously shared from 50th Parallel’s rocky outcrops above. And only literally a two-minute walk (or downhill roll) away from the winery on the sun kissed shores of Lake Okanagan…really?...YES…

“As I was creating businesses in Calgary, at night, in my spare time, I was always researching creating a world class wine destination out here in the Okanagan,” explains Curtis. “My bedtime reading was(is) always grapevine physiology, you can’t get dryer reading,” (he says with a chuckle) “it’s been almost a 16-year-long vision trying to create something awesome, and to find the right place to do it. I have and always will be a creator, and with creation in this business we have also found a beauty in the art of nurturing. Nurturing the vineyard and wines, nurturing the people that come to see the place, and nurturing the blurred lines after a great party at 50th”. Curtis met Sheri-Lee Janet-Diane Turner-Krouzel (a well named country girl from High-River Alberta…that does not eat beef… (what?) in 2000 on of all places, on a house-boating trip (that’s another article). They travelled together often to the Okanagan as Curtis intently researched his vision first-hand. Sheri-Lee is also a highly successful entrepreneur with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in marketing, and a history of building great businesses in media, marketing, and fitness. At one point she owned a series of ‘Curves for Women’ franchises. Curtis tells of the romantic car rides through the Okanagan, “I would jump over many people’s fences, steal dirt, dig holes in other people’s vineyards, do a bunch of soil analysis testing, grab little chunks of plant and try to figure out the wines that were achieving well or badly, where exactly they came from, and determine if it was something great or greatly wrong with the place” he says.

OK so the place sounds like it needs no lipstick, but what about the crazies who would embark on an obviously capitally intensive and likely stress filled venture like this in the Okanagan Valley…of all places? A bit of a tall order don’tcha think? Meet the Glamour Farmers. Meet Them at the 50th. Curtis is a first generation Canadian who was born in Winnipeg to

“The thing I neglected to realize at the time was that we were using Sheri-Lee’s well branded ‘Curves’ Mini-Cooper car to execute our not-so covert vineyard missions. The phone number to her cell phone was on the side of the car along with a full body wrap of ladies working out on the fitness equipment…we got a few phone calls”. In 2004, Curtis had a property investment company working for

Specialist producers of Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines. him that convinced him to buy a revenue property in the Fintry area of Lake Okanagan. Two years later once he completed building a beautiful vacation cottage, he sat on the deck and took a good, long look across the lake during a text-book Okanagan sunset…his eyes peeled way back. “I could not believe what I was looking at, it seemed too good to be true especially after so many years of hunting.” Curtis quickly made a trip across the lake. “The sun, the lake reflectivity, the slope of that land and the beautiful rare pink granitic soils I discovered there and the sheltering mountain it was cradled by, the lake effect…I did not understand why I had not looked over there before?” After many exploratory trips to the site, careful placement of a stealth weather station, and more dirt felony, Curtis realized this was the place to create the perfect Pinot Noir. The only problem…it was a lot larger a property than what he was looking for. “I was looking for 15, maybe 20 acres. As it turned out, this property that looked manageable from across the lake was in fact 61 acres on one title.” Although they needed to find some resources, the couple felt it would give them room for all their plans. “I sat on that deck at our cottage day in and day out trying to figure out how to buy this property. Maybe another 10 successful years in my current business and I could pull it off myself. But surely someone else would figure this place out before then.” One day on the cottage deck with binoculars in hand, and a great glass of Pinot Noir within half-arms reach, Curtis’s end-

less gaze through his binoculars was obstructed by a blurry orange blob. He pulled back to notice Sheri-Lee standing in front of him with a beautiful organic carrot tied to a string. “Sweetheart, are you going to be a Jackass or are you going to go and get that carrot” said Sheri-Lee. With that love-nudge the rest is history in the making. Enlisting the help of some amazing outside investors, they bought the property, started planting vines with five Dijon clones of Pinot Noir the majority, and began design work on the winery, tasting room, events centre, bistro, wine-bungalow accommodation and a vino-therapy spa with the help of well-known Calgary designer Peter Hribar. Sheri-Lee, 38, is counting down the days till when she can get back to her fitness roots and lead workouts among the vines before enjoying grape-based therapy treatments. “I can’t wait to take people to go detox in the vineyard and then retox in the tasting room” she says with a giggle. The project is being built in stages. Since 2009 they’ve planted an impressive 17 hectares (43 acres) of vines. In 2013 they produced about 6,000 cases of wine predominantly with fruit from the estate. The first portion of the main winery and tasting centre will open this May, and construction will continue on in the fall with the rest of the phases being built out over 2015. “The program is building out beautifully,” says Curtis, adding they are launching the next phase of private equity investment to complete the development and purchase more land for vineyards. “We are looking for the next great additions to our extended team, our investors. We are all having an amazing time together.” Pinot Noir makes up about half of their production, and is/will be the only red wine produced here as critical focus is required to make great Pinot Noir. The carefully chosen complimentary white aromatic wines produced are Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling, and a very special bit of Chardonnay. The winery also cultivates a unique vineyard specifically for a dry Pinot Noir Rosé.

“We’re focused on doing very few things, and doing them very well,” says Curtis. Their program acquired a critical team member last spring when friend and highly regarded winemaker Grant Stanley left Quails’ Gate Winery to become director of winemaking and viticulture at 50th Parallel Estate.

MEET ME AT THE 50th

“Grant has always been a big supporter of our vision,” says Curtis. “He’s always, absolutely, just loved that site. When he first came with me to analyze the site, he had a hard time containing his excitement, he just thought it was brilliant.” “Grant wanted to be somewhere where he could be shoulder to shoulder and partner with people and focus on his specialty, Pinot Noir. I had always been a huge fan of Grant’s accomplishments at Ata-Rangi winery New Zealand where he had twice won the accolade for the World’s best Pinot Noir at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. Grant thinks he can do it again here.” says Curtis with a smile “I knew Grant was the one for our project from the day we met him in, you need a lot of energy to keep up with our team. The beauty of having Grant join us is that he comes also as an investor, and friend, and with the motivation for us all to create something great, and that’s hard to find”. Curtis and Sheri-Lee are infectiously excited about the team they’ve put together. “We are blessed. It’s about people who have passion and want to create a dream, a legacy together. That’s what it takes.” Sheri-Lee says this project has its ‘wows’ and ‘pows’. “It’s a lot of work and a lot of tears and a lot of struggle; but it’s been so rewarding on so many levels.” Not very often do you see a winery successfully charge out of the gates with such incredible reviews and wine quality from such young vineyards. In the first two vintages released from 50th

HOW TO ... SELL Your Business?

by Steve Harvey

?

The objective to confidentially sell your business, together with its assets, inventory and real estate, in the shortest amount of time, at the best possible price and terms, and with the least amount of inconvenience and hassle. Protecting the confidentiality of your business for sale is Priority # 1. The importance of confidentiality at all times during the sales process is the most important ingredient in the successful sale of an existing business.

Step 1: Business assessment and review Tidy up your business as if you are about to move to a new house. Get rid of the old inventory, paperwork that you have been collecting for the last 10 years, bad debts, problem customers, unproductive employees, and assets that are not being utilized and/or old. A Buyer is not interested in inheriting your problems nor will they pay you for them.

Step 2:

Financials

Ensure all of your financials are up to date. The last 3 - 5 years of historical Income Statements and Balance Sheet that is prepared by a qualified and certified accountant with a CA, CGA or CMA designation. For small businesses if you do not have an accountant prepared statement than your Revenue Canada tax return T2 filing should be acceptable as well. Get your accounts up to date with GST, payroll taxes, federal taxes, suppliers, customers, etc.

Step 3:

Can you start to step away from the business

aspect of the operations. Create a list of all the things that you do on a daily basis for the business and see what 3 - 5 areas that you might be able to delegate or train an existing employee to take over.

Step 4:

Review contracts, leases and property assessments Check your existing lease, contracts and any agreements that you have in place. Review your lease, franchise, customers, property assessments, etc. Some not so obvious ones are: website, yellow pages, long distance service providers, garbage disposal, etc. Ensure that they are up to date and can be assigned to the buyer. Look into a valuation for the business and the property.

Step 5:

Working with a Professional

Contact an experienced Business Broker to get advice on what you should do and could do to maximize the price that you get for your business. Don’t try and sell your business on your own. Leave that up to your Business Broker. It is more important that you concentrate on ensuring that your business performs to best ability during the sale process.

Start thinking about how you can delegate some of your day to day activities of the business. Buyers do not want to buy a business that relies on you doing every 46

Step 6:

Talk to your accountant

Visit with your accountant and get their advice on taxation and capital gains issues so that you do not have to pay more than you need to.

Step 7:

Know why you are Selling

Plan what you are going to do after you sell your business as this will affect timing, advice from your accountants and future requirements. All Buyers want to know why you are selling.

Thanks to a very handy app on my IPad that saved me hours of algebra and a solid understanding of market fundamentals, I was able to come up with the simplest formula to achieve the 2 million dollar portfolio with 100k income. Acquiring real estate holdings beyond the primary residence is something that many cultures seem to grasp a lot better than the average Canadian. -> I can’t tell you how many elder Europeans and Asians I’ve encountered with massive portfolios of real estate worth millions despite their modest earnings their entire career. So what does it really take? What is the real commitment here? Simply put, it starts with 50k representing your 20% down payment on your first quarter million dollar holding property. It also requires reasonable credit and reasonable income, nothing fancy. After the first one, the clock starts. Sometime over the next 3 years it’s your mission to generate or find the next 50 k down payment and once more in the following 2 years. For some it will be diligent saving by living within their means. For others it will require

proceeds from property flips or some other successful venture. And for many it will be borrowed from their primary residence with a credit line, or any combination of the above. -> The bottom line is ... it’s not all that difficult. It starts with a decision; followed by seeking some help from professionals like realtors, mortgage brokers and financial planners to help you maximize your returns. There all kinds of nuances that can take this plan and ramp it up even further, but the nuts and bolts of it couldn’t be simpler. So now after all that I better explain the numbers and show the example in action. Some very conservative assumptions have been made for the purposes of this example the historic appreciation rate of real estate (5%) and the historic inflation rate of rents and expenses (3%) applied to a 25 year timeline for holding 3 investment properties bought at various stages of the first 5 years. Here are the highlights: Total Portfolio value in 25 years

$2,276,913

Annual net revenues from rent

$ 102,844

25 year Return on Investment

2,055%

Skeptics may say this is pie in the sky; however I believe it is very conservative to expect the 250k house in Kelowna to be 750k after 2 complete market cycles. One look at what people pay over a million for only a 48 min flight away at this very moment, and a glance at any real estate price index chart for the past 100 years and it would be tough to refute.

If the growth we’ve had in the 25 years in Kelowna while I’ve been here is any indication of what’s to come, the future is very bright indeed for our beautiful lake city. This model applies whether you’re 20 or starting at 50.

AJ Hazzi AJ is the owner of Kelowna’s downtown boutique firm, Vantage West Realty. The firm prides itself in breaking the mold when it comes to how they practice real estate. Taking a consultants approach rather than the tired, old-fashioned sales approach of selling kitchens and baths, they pride themselves in having a level of expertise not found in a class room. Having been a student of real estate through 2 market cycles, AJ has come to realize the absence of truly qualified professionals specializing in investment real estate. This has become AJ’s role within the firm and the community, to consult clients on Foreclosure sales, Flipping, Positive cash-flow, the benefits of lease option and other creative avenues that most agents completely ignore. AJ is a firm believer that the current market is rich with opportunity and that there is a real need for a consultant who “speaks the language” of the investor large and small, and understands their wants and needs. For example, many realtors would squirm from having to make low-ball offers, worried about insulting sellers and tarnishing their own reputation. AJ consults his clients to make the

The 30 to 55 illustration works because it fits the social norms, but the reality is it’s never too soon, or too late to implement an investment strategy like this. In fact I started this at 20 and I expect I will be doing it at 80. The moral to the story is a wise man doesn’t wait to buy real estate; he buys real estate and then waits...

offer that makes sense to them based on their goals; if it’s a flip then the mathematics on the firm’s handy “profitable project work sheet” sets the max dollar. The same for cash-flow, if a client has a rate of return in mind, then that dictates the price! With a well-deserved reputation as a real estate renegade, Hazzi is definitely an out of the box thinker; a proactive agent willing to get creative and produce a solution during challenging transactions. He is very excited about the market we will see in the next 10 years and feels that it will lend itself very well to his unconventional style. AJ is an agent who practices what he preaches. He has built his own real estate portfolio up to include development property, resort property, rentals, fix and flips and cash flow properties. Arming his clients with the knowledge and confidence to invest has enabled many of them to build impressive net worth and passive income. His goal is to impart on people especially of the the X and Y generation, that depending on RRSP’s and Government Pension Plans to look after us down the road is risky business. Most people don’t realize that as little as 1 or 2 properties added to your real estate portfolio now can provide a safe, cushy retirement in the future and the sky really is the limit. AJ’s past clients and business relationships are his largest asset. His business has been grown almost exclusively by referral. To hear what AJ Hazzi’s clients have to say about his service view the testimonials.

EAT Yourself Skinny !

by Jacqui Perry

“Fats”. When I was a kid, I had my mouth washed out with soap for using four-letter words. Ok, “fats” was not the word that warranted that action, but “fats” is a four-letter word. What do you think when you hear the word “Fats”? Are your thoughts positive or negative?

campaign. Few (fat) researchers were familiar with the incredible health benefits of the unique group of saturated “fats” found in medium chain coconut oil (1) at that time. Since then a wealth of new research has emerged to the forefront, showing its benefits.

“Fats” scare all of us; particularly the kind that moves into our prime real estate (that area around the middle of our bodies) and never seems to move out. The problem with fat is that we need fat (some); we like fat (a lot); we crave fat (too much). Fat is the element in food that delivers flavor; enhances flavor and adds flavor. It amps up the crave-ability of great food. Is it any wonder why food manufacturers and restaurants add more and more layers of it on to their delectable creations. It also can add more onto our waistlines. Thus throwing us into a cycle of dieting that never ends.

Researchers like Peter Jones from McGill University, are now recommending medium-chain fats for those who want to loose weight and boost metabolism. He describes tropical oils such as coconut oil as actual “fat-busters”.(2) These “fat-busters”, are digested and metabolized very differently than long-chain saturated “fats”. Unlike long chain fats, medium chain fats are sent to the liver and converted to energy, rather than being stored as body fat.(3) So when you eat coconut oil the body uses it immediately to make energy, not fat!

Despair no longer. This is where it gets good, because not all fats are created equal; especially not Coconut Oil. What if I told you that this fat will increase energy, kick your metabolism into high gear and help those extra pounds to melt away. Keep reading and I’ll tell you the story… Since the 1980’s, there has been a campaign to reduce or eliminate saturated “fats” from our diet, in order to improve coronary health. Consequently, because of the saturated fat in coconut oil, it was assumed to, and accused of, causing heart disease. Coconut oil is a medium-chain fat. It is very different from the unhealthy long-chain saturated fats that were the subject of the health issues of the said

The calorie-burning effect of medium-chain fats are amazing. Studies show that after eating a single meal containing these fats, metabolism increases and remains elevated for at least 24 hours. So during this entire time you will have a higher level of energy and will be burning calories at an accelerated rate. Also, if you replace all the oils in your diet that are made of long chain fats (see my blog for a detailed list) with medium chain fats, you can lose up to 36 pounds of excess fat a year.(4) Dr. Bruce Fife ND, researcher, author, and authority on coconut oil, quotes from the Journal of Nutrition, he says,“… researchers reviewed all the published studies to date on medium chain “fats” and weight management. These studies demonstrated that diets containing medium chain “fats”, result in: 1.) increased energy 2.) a rise in metabolism 3.) increase burning of calories 4.) decrease in food consumption 5.) lower body fat mass 6.) reduction in body weight”.(5) Wow, put that onto my grocery list.

Fife notes to start off slowly adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil a day and working up to 3 to 4 tablespoons a day into your daily diet. This has achieved good results over the long term. He also stresses the importance of a balanced nutritious diet, and plenty of exercise for continued success in permanent weight management. The bottom line, is that “Fats” don’t have to be a negative word after all. Getting an oil change might be the catalyst necessary to keep our weight in balance. We just may be able to eat ourselves skinny.

10 ways on How to Incorporate Coconut Oil 1.) Put it in your morning smoothie 2.) Use only coconut oil for frying 3.) Put it in soup 4.) On top of your toast instead of butter 5.) In rice, once rice is cooked, stir in coconut oil 6.) On top of potatoes and steamed veggies 7.) Replace the fats in baking with coconut oil 8.) Use it on your skin to shave your legs 9.) Use it as a mouth rinse to kill harmful bacteria 10.) Use it to moisturize your skin

It has a rich, plush entry with silky textures and a balanced attack, leading to a long and smooth finish. Road 13 2011 Jackpot Syrah “Road 13 has certainly hit the jackpot with this fresh and savoury Syrah. Heady notes of grilled meats, peppery spice, dried herbs, black cherries and a puff of tobacco ash on the finish. The Syrah flights were highly competitive this year, and this wine shone.” - Treve Ring, BC Wine Awards Judges Comments.

Nothing much to add, Treve! This BC Wine Awards Gold Medal Winner with its opaque black garnet colour and the vibrant nose of fresh black pepper, ripe blackberry, orange blossom and vanilla pod, is one of the best examples what this variety can do in the Okanagan. Liquidity Wines 2012 Viognier Nestled between the stunning vistas of lakes Vaseaux and Skaha, Liquidity Wines is one of the latest labels in the Okanagan Valley. Under the new ownership of Ian MacDonald and his partners, winemaker Matt Holmes created (in our humble opinion) an outstanding and delicious Viognier. Bright acidity and fruity flavours of apriocots, bananas and apples, mixed with a hint of spice, this wine has great depth and complexity with that oily/viscous sensation in the mouth that a Viognier is known for. Perfect for those warm spring days! Btw: Liquidity’s tasting room is open from April 18 on, and their brand new bistro will open its doors on May 1st!. Retail: $22.90

Hester Creek 2012 Chardonnay “A true expression of Chardonnay from the Golden Mile Bench. The 2012 Chardonnay showcases aromas of honey, citrus, smoke, and butterscotch and follows with a full palate of caramel, fresh lemon and a long round finish. This extremely food driven wine has a diverse cross section of opportunities for pairing. Smoke some heirloom tomatoes and make a smoked tomato cream soup or pasta sauce. Try west coast seafood with a bit more oily texture like scallops or sable fish. Alternatively fresh lemon components add an extra layer to pair nicely.” Retail: $24.95 60

Looking for LOVE in all the WRONG PLACES? Hmmmm ... Have you ever looked everywhere for your keys only to find them sitting out in plain sight? Love can be like that, right there under your nose. Here is what you might consider “mad advice” ... stop looking !

Girl…there’s a difference between putting yourself out there and what seems to be a narrow focus of finding the “one”. Spend time doing the things that make you happy with people you love. That energy will turn into a sense of contentment within you that will make you even more attractive! Skylar ... Mr. Right will materialize if you believe you are Ms. Right first!

WHERE do you LOOK for ... THE ONE? Samantha (36) “I think the best place to meet men is at parties, I get to see them in action and watch how they behave! ”

Thomas (27) “I have met all my partners through other friends. They know me and introduce me to girls I have stuff in common with.”

Anna (34) “I’m online and have had “plenty of dates” from that. So far a lot of nice guys, not really the right guys and a sprinkle of OMG ‘s that send me running! ”

Wait - Organics ... really David?! Okay so lets go with the supermarket idea ... think about your last visit to the organic food aisle. There are zillions of brands and variations of everything! So its not enough to make the decision to go organic ... now you need the skills to decipher the mysteries of the array of foods you have to select from. Relationships can be like that … lots of great people out there but how to know who to choose? There’s science that says you can determine if you are soul mates by looking at the way you speak according to “language style matching research”. Well that explains those “so together” couples who can finish each other’s sentences … But when we have a list, our shopping expedition is usually more fruitful and looking for a partner is the same thing.

Feedback and Questions for Gayle ... Tamar writes……a few months ago I cheated on my boyfriend when he was away up north for work. This is the second time I have done this and I think he may know but he doesn’t say anything. I really love this guy and feel bad. I wish it never happened! I want him to know I’m not a cheater and that he can trust me but I am afraid to bring it up. Help me please Gayle!

Courtney (23) “School, work, the gym ... I always let people I meet know I’m single…immediately!”

David (40ish) “Supermarkets ... best place to meet quality women and get your organics too! ”

During date chat ask about significant life events……tell me about your saddest or happiest day, how do you like to celebrate your birthday, or who is a person you really admire in life? Asking about things that matter can be a little window to the inside of this stranger. Okay so now you have to watch for language patterns…..ask pointed questions, oh and feel the heat (or not) of chemistry ... dating is sounding complicated! Maybe just go into that produce aisle and sample all those delicious fruits …… you might just find you develop a taste for one! Now I have a question for you ... WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT ? Send me your thoughts at : askgayle@icon-okanagan.com

Tamar, sweety you are “technically a cheater”! You need to own what you have done because a grown up relationship demands more than just wishes and wanting. You need to show your boyfriend your love through trust and commitment to each other. Talk to him about where you want your relationship to go and what you need from him to get there. Listen to his needs and together choose to proceed or not. Cheating doesn’t have to end your relationship but it will if you don’t fess up, apologize and stop messing around!

Last issue’s TMI (too much info) column has continued to spark reader response ...

JNL writes : I have to totally disagree with your advice, withholding information is OK for a short term relationship that hasn’t a chance of going anywhere…then mums the word….who cares? If you wish to have a long term, loving relationship, then FULL disclosure is necessary.

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

SERWA

Kelsey Serwa won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She is the 2011 FIS World Champion and is also a Winter X Games gold medalist. When I was six, my parents’ excavation company, Serwa Bulldozing agreed to work with the Kelowna Ski Club to dig a basement for their new club cabin. The ski club didn’t have the funds to pay for the work so both parties decided to exchange services instead. The Kelowna Ski Club offered free Nancy Greene lessons to all three of us Serwa kidlets, in exchange for their new foundation. That’s the moment I got hooked on ski racing and my parents now joke that the ski club basement was the most expensive basement they have ever dug. My Grandpa, Cliff Serwa used to joke that he might not see his partner, Doug Mervyn, at the end of a day when they were first starting up at Big White. They used to poke fun that they wouldn’t be surprised if at some point, one would be eaten by a grizzly bear or taken down by a cougar. When those two get together they are always swapping some really good stories about their adventures back in the day. One of the difficulties I had when I came back to ski cross after surgery was having people ski in front of me in a course. When I ski solo down a track, I am in complete control. But, when you throw another person into the mix, you are at the mercy of their actions. Being able to stay focused while people are skiing in front of you is an integral part of being a successful ski cross racer. Through training and exposure, I was able to work through the discomfort, keep my vision past the racers in front of me, focus on my technique and pin it to the bottom. People ask if athletes can slow things down while they are competing or racing at high speeds. I believe elite athletes have trained to be at this level so they can process their environment at a rate much faster than the average person. This allows competitors to react to their field of play in an efficient and instantaneous manner. Yeah, I’m competitive. When I hear what my teammate lifted at the gym or her time

on the ski cross track, I want to push my hardest to beat it. An injury can easily be viewed as a setback. I look at them as an opportunity to rebuild both the mind and body. Through my injuries and with help from my amazing doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists, personal trainer, coaches and teammates I was able to come back stronger. Having these knee injuries before standing on the Olympic podium made this silver medal feel that much sweeter. It wasn’t guaranteed that I would be a podium contender, let alone be racing at this Olympics since I re-injured myself only a month before the games. To battle my way through the last three years of injury, and to battle my way through a tough day of racing makes me proud. This medal is amazing. I mostly appreciate the story and path it took to get here. I am a strong believer in representing products I truly believe in. Over the past few years, I have made partnerships with food and beverage companies: Zico Coconut Water, SoLo Energy Bar and Jules Fuel. I feel an athlete’s body will perform only as well as the fuel they choose to put in it, so I choose to eat healthy and stay hydrated naturally. While racing on the road, we have a fair amount of downtime to relax. When we aren’t on the hill, eating, working out, treating our tired bodies to massage and physiotherapy or reviewing video footage of the day’s training, I will catch up on a few of my favourite TV shows. Some of my current faves include Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Suits. When we arrived in Sochi, I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of our accommodation and the friendliness of the Russian volunteers. The residence in the athlete’s village was buzzing with excitement. Transportation to and from the venues was fast and efficient coming from the athlete’s village and our competition zones were amazing.

The Olympic ski cross track was by far the best track we have seen on the World Cup circuit all season. The jumps course was smooth, fast, fun, technical and provided great opportunities for passing throughout the track. Travelling home from Sochi, my boyfriend, Stan Rey, asked me how many people might be at the Welcome Home Celebration at YLW. Never having participated in anything like this before, I said, “I wasn’t sure...maybe 50?” When we arrived at the airport there were hundreds holding up signs and yelling my name. I was overwhelmed with joy. Even now I tear up thinking about it all. It’s different being a Canadian athlete. I feel there is a greater sense of pride when we represent our nation. We aren’t just athletes from Canada; We are a part of Canada; We are Canada. When I’m coming home from a long haul on the road, I’m most comfortable at my Mom and Dad’s house in Kelowna or at their condo on the mountain (Big White). My state of mind when I’m not training or racing is totally relaxed and up for anything. I use this time to catch up with friends and family, and to get caught up on all of my messages and emails. When I’m asked by parents about what their kids should be doing to become better at their sport, I always say they have to enjoy their sport first. When you’re training long hours and trying to achieve something great you have to love the process or it won’t happen.

The Drama of Colour I LOVE a complex painting, wherein the brush strokes are layered on top of one another, creating depth and dimension of colors that when viewed, particularly at a distance, creates an interesting twist on reality. I don’t seem to be able to do “simple well. A painting for me has a life of its own. During the course of the creative experience the painting takes control and creates its own direction.

I have always been drawn to art, participating in artistic projects in school regardless of their nature. I even painted a VW Beetle for a friends father ... Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker battling it out on the front hood of the VW. Photos of it made to the local newspaper, I still have that newspaper clipping ... somewhere!

I love the drama of colour.

After receiving my BFA, I moved to Montreal, and applied my creative and artistic skills to marketing, packaging design and product development. Notwithstanding a busy schedule of business, raising a family and furthering my education, there was always time reserved for my true passion, painting. It was during this period that I had the opportunity, without pressure, to experiment with different styles and medium.

In any piece I have a larger pallet then most artists, and I work on dramatic hits of light and strong contrasts of colour upon colour. My work does not normally show soft transitions but rather dynamic changes in color. I paint the negative space, adding lighter and lighter strokes against, or rather within a darker object. My trees are filled with dancing light, often with backgrounds of lakes, reflecting the surrounding colours.

My entire college focus was art.

In the end it provided me direction in my art career.

SPRING 2014

After leaving Montreal and moving to Kelowna, Art became my full time career (I know – like so many others!) Kelowna has a fabulous group of artists that add a great deal to the character of our town. I really became involved in the art community and participated extensively in much that the art world has to offer. I have volunteered at the Kelowna Art Gallery, and actively been part of art groups and art events My art career has been enhanced by the experience and knowledge gained from my peers in the art world and wonderful advice from gallery owners. Having moved to Kelowna, I was inspired by the Okanagan geography; incredible mountain and lake vistas, lush vineyards, breathtaking sunsets, dramatic skies and cloud formations. They have taken over my painting; I still, however, leave some time for my much loved flowers, whimsical ski villages, and the occasional city and town life scenes. Whatever the subject that I am painting, I find an unexpected twist in composition, intense hits of light and the illusion of movement quite satisfying, but really is all about playing in the colours. That really inspires me! I focus a great deal on trees; I love the shapes and the play of light through branches. I love high horizon lines where I can really give the lake the space it deserves on the canvas, where it often takes over, dancing with reflections.

SPRING 2014

My work is impressionistic, leaning towards reality with creative exaggerations. My paintings have a life of their own and come into being through pure passion. My hope is that the viewer will share that passion and appreciate the colour combinations, the patterns that emerge unexpectedly, and the beauty of the interpretation of the subject represented.

Anita McComas’ work is available at two locations in Kelowna, -Tutt Art Galleries ( on Tutt street in Pandosy Village) and -Little Straw Vineyards in just above Boucherie Rd in West Kelowna. During the 2014 Spring Wine fest, (May 1-12), Anita will be paining on site at Little Straw (May 3,5 and 10, 11 from 9-2) as part of the wine fest celebration and thee “ kick off” of her solo show in their upper gallery, which will run throughout the 2014 season. You can also meet the artist at the Western Art show, Artists Studios, July 3 -11, as part of the Calgary Stampede. www.anitamccomas.com

SMILE! Designer Digs

Designer Home Tour, Fashion Show and Charity Fundraiser, April 4, 2014 Is there any better way to spend a Friday evening then having a sneak peek around beautifully designed homes, followed by a drop dead gorgeous fashion show, followed by an after party and silent auction, all in the name of charity? No, we thought not.

1 2

The event in question was ‘Designer Digs’, the brainchild of La Bonne Vie’s Tracey Wikenheiser in aid of the ‘Wish Come True Society’, whose aim is to build a children’s respite/ hospice house here in the Okanagan. Ticket holders were able to take a self-guided tour around three of Kelowna’s most stylishly designed homes, followed by a fashion show featuring clothing from Kelowna-born, Vancouver-based women’s wear design Jason Matlo and from La Bonne Vie’s spring collection, featuring hair and make-up from Mod Salon. The fashion show and after party was held at Botegga, and featured wine from Ex Nihilo Vineyards and canapés from Cabana Bar & Grill.

“It is such an honour to know and work with people who are so invested in giving back to the community and make a difference in our world….and this evening would not have taken place without their commitment and efforts,” says Wikenheiser. I also want to take a moment to thank the community for their attendance and support – you are amazing!!” 1) Lisa, Tracy 2) Jocelyn, Craig (Mod Salon) 3) Tabatha (Mod Salon) 4) Loyal, Jamie, Dana 5) Jillian, Fae 6) Jane, Jenny 7) Tracey, Deborah 8) Star, Jim 9) Loyal, Russ, Jon, Jess, Sebastian 10) Jeff, Decoa (Ex Nihilo) 11) Lita, Melissa, Tyee, Laurel, Althea

Money is What Clients Like to Call it

Canada’s Reno Rebate Inc. continues to spread the word about government rebates for new-home purchases, owner built homes and substantial renovations to existing homes during the tenure of the HST throughout Ontario and British Columbia. Happy clients are receiving up to $42,500, which is the upper limit a homeowner can receive for a project. Canada’s Reno Rebate Inc. has already helped homeowners apply for rebates totaling over $4 million through our Victoria office alone. With new offices in Vancouver and Toronto the number of homeowners we are helping is growing exponentially. “There is a misconception that if your home is worth more than $450,000, you are not entitled to any government rebates, but this is just not true,” says Sean. Do I qualify has to be the most frequently asked question my staff get say’s Sean Leitenberg, Manager of the Victoria Office. Each renovation or new build is not exactly the same so we have to determine that the best we can on a case-by-case basis. There are definitely some clear-cut rules though. There is a deadline of 2 years from the time you completed your major renovation or new build to apply though there are a couple exceptions to that rule too. To qualify for a major renovation you must do substantial work to the majority of the inside of your home. If your work was limited to a small portion of your home, such as a bathroom or kitchen, or you just painted or put down new floors, you would not qualify for this rebate. The end result of your renovation should be that your home or condo is

$42,500 Tax Free Rebate might be on the horizon

like a new home. When it comes to the expenses incurred on the outside of your home, you can only claim these amounts if you have first met the requirements on the inside of your home. If you purchased a new home or condo for yourself, the builder has probably claimed the rebate. If you purchased that property as an investment rental property, the builder could not claim the rebate and as the owner of that condo or home you may be entitled to a rental rebate for as much as $42,500 once you have signed a lease with your tenants. If your home is worth more than $450,000, you are not entitled to a federal rebate; however, you may be entitled to a provincial rebate if a portion of the construction took place during the term of HST. If your home is worth less than $450,000 you are entitled to both a federal rebate as well as a provincial rebate for the portion spent during the period of HST. A new home built or renovated for your self, or as a family members’ primary place of residence qualifies if it was completed within the last 2 years. If the home’s value is more than $450,000 then you are only entitled to a rebate for money spent between July 1, 2010 and March 31, 2013. Canada’s Reno Rebate has representatives

throughout British Columbia and Ontario who are happy to help clients with the forms that need signing and a brief questionnaire. For the areas where we do not have a representative, or if you would prefer to download the forms for signing right from our website in the comfort of your home and use our free courier service, the time involved is minimal and your rebate could be huge. There is a brief questionnaire on our website which allows you to see if you qualify for the rebate and only takes a few minutes or if you like you can give us a call and in just a few minutes we can determine if you qualify. Everyone seems to know someone who qualifies for this rebate, so if you know someone who might qualify make sure to let them know before they miss their deadline. Canada’s Reno Rebate Inc. handles all the paperwork and follows through with the government until you receive your cheque. Because Sean and his staff know the forms, the processes, and who to call, they efficiently and quickly collect the information and submit exactly what the government agencies need. The company charges no upfront fee and if you don’t receive a rebate, the application costs you nothing. So give us a call or check us out online. What have you got to lose?

“It’s not easy being green…” Kermit the Frog… 1972 Is going green a trend? Is it something that is here to stay for the long run? This concept of a green life is slowly taking root in the construction industry as it is in many other areas of our modern life. Today awareness of climate change and environmental issues has become common knowledge globally and all around the world people are starting to act on these critical issues in many ways. As we shall see the most immediate way to adapt good “ Green Habits” starts at home. One of these ways is to create natural healthy walls. We are not talking about a wall. It is a wakeup call. A corner stone of healthy living. It is terra. It is firma. It is respect for a living planet and a sanctuary from the status quo. It is a breath of fresh air. It is not a wall. American Clay Walls …A natural alternative… a unique combination of clays, aggregates and natural pigments are used to create the colours and textures that make earth plasters a natural choice for warmth and beauty on interior walls and ceilings creating a comfortable healthy living environment. Claymasters creates artisan walls using natural mineral plasters. The plaster absorbs odours, regulates humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture, and remains warm in the winter while cooler in the summer months. The earth plastered surfaces also improve the acoustics within a room and maintain a pH level that deters any bacteria or mold from growing on the walls. Clay breathes and you can feel the difference as you move from a space finished in American Clay to one that is not, it is amazing. You really have to experience it to understand. As the Okanagan Valley’s exclusive dealer and certified applicator of American Clay products, Gerry Monty and the people at Claymasters Kelowna believe the relationships with their clients are personal. “Extraordinary customer service has always made good sense to us. We do what is right for the customer even when it does not seem to be conventional. We go the extra mile.” SPRING 2014

What We Love About The Okanagan

Insider information is everything! This issue Tamie Williams, the female face of Shaw TV’s (go! Okanagan) team, shares some of her favourite things about the Okanagan...

1

5

The smells of the Okanagan…in the spring, the blossoms as they begin to come to life, in the summer – sunscreen smell is everywhere and in the fall, the smell of the crisp air… Kangaroo Creek Farm in Lake Country – great place with a petting zoo, and Joey’s and adult Kangaroos…so cute!

3

Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan – bit past Cedar Creek Winery…oh gelato at its finest!!!!!!!

The zip line at Gyro Beach…but not because I like to go on it…it’s because I’ve watched both my kids play at that beach, and the giggles as they plunge into the lake from the zip line always triggers an ear to ear grin on my face Summerland peach trees.. during my first summer here, I was enthralled by the abundance of fruit growing what seemed like everywhere to me… and in Summerland, was the first time I plucked a peach off a tree and ate it… Cherry Season!!!!!! Oh I eat myself into oblivion!

7 8

6

13

Moo-Lix in downtown Kelowna…because my son loves the chocolate tofu ice cream they have!

The neo natal unit at KGH and the kind souls that help our area’s youngest patients– thank you

10

Short winters...

9

McMillian Pumpkin Patch – in October, a fall/Halloween wonderland is set up at the farm…hay rides, sling shots loaded with pumpkins, a corn maze and so many varieties of potential Jack-oLanterns

11

12

Tamie Williams Rotary Beach in Kelowna – many years ago, one summer night, with a bit of a heavy wind, my daughter, husband and myself spent hours playing in the waves…the water was bath tub warm.

14

Shops full of vintage clothing.

16

The Summerland Studio Tour – a way to see some of this area’s finest, creative souls in their environment doing what they love.

17

The drive from Kelowna to Penticton in the summer as the sun is sitting at just the right angle over the lake…helps me remember how beautiful this part of the world is.

The walk along the boardwalk in downtown Kelowna during the summer months…as the area bustles with visitors…the feeling of life and fun is contagious.

15

Patio at Kelly O’Bryan’s – amazing view.

But most of all, I love that the majority of my family lives here and will stay because of all we love what the valley offers. (go! Okanagan): view on Channel 11 in Kelwona, Penticton and Vernon or at www.shaw.ca/ShawTV/ Kelowna/Shows/ShawTV/ or on www.youtube.com/user/ShawTVOkanagan
