Welcome to ... lots of sunshine, beautiful beaches, endless outdoor activities, and long summer evenings with friends and family enjoying some delicious food ... yes, it’s the best time of the year! And the Okanagan Valley is quite simply the best place to be! We call this issue our “Big Bang Issue.” Why? Well, you will soon find out. Just flip through the pages - see what we mean? It’s the best of the best. We had FUN! We came up with some very cool ideas to showcase what this beautiful valley has to offer. We not only decided to invite some clients and friends and go out on the lake on a luxurious yacht - we made it a fashion photo shoot “Monte Carlo Style!” But there’s more for boating enthusiasts, way more: How about an 8 page special introducing new boats, businesses and their services? And for those of you who prefer four wheels we have some car reviews as well. You love your glass of wine, and can’t wait to visit some wineries, sample their best vino and enjoy some delicious food? Why not do it “in style” ... with a helicopter wine-tour? We did, and we had a fantastic time. You have to try it!

Craft distilled in Kelowna Handcrafting premium spirits from grain/fruit to glass using authentic ingredients grown by local farmers. Every detail is considered in what we craft and how you experience it. At Urban Distilleries, we have a certain way of doing things. It’s simply who we are and how we craft our spirits and your experience. Creating a legacy that embraces hard work and celebrates our community of family and friends. We’re proud to be the first BC Craft distillery. Honored to open our doors to the community. Loving what we do. Having fun doing it. Eager to share the Urban Distilleries experience with you. The Story is in the Details It’s amazing what attention to detail, hard work, and a lot of heart can produce. What once was a beer distribution warehouse in Kelowna, BC has been transformed into an authentic distillery and tasting room. Mike Urban established Urban Distilleries in 2010. Mike had the dream and the passion to create premium small-batch spirits by hand using local ingredients and share these spirits with the community. The centerpiece of the business are two Arnold Holstein stills—which were proudly manufactured in Germany. With a combined total of 900 liters, the copper stills allow our master distiller, Mike, the ability to create spirits with complexity and character, ultimately delivering a superior product. Everything at Urban Distilleries has been done carefully and with much consideration. Keeping the distilling process at the forefront of the building ensures guests will fully embrace the story and art of handcrafted spirits—from the 12

local farms where ingredients are sourced to the precision and time devoted to distilling the mash and bottling the spirits. The building was gutted to make room for the stills, processing equipment, grain, storage, and tasting room. Staying true to the heritage of spirits we gave the distillery an old, industrial feel. We have created a warm and inviting space by incorporating natural building products such as cork and wood the right amount of metals that accent the tasting room and processing area. Currently, we offer Spirit Bear Gin, Spirit Bear Vodka, natural infused vodkas and Urban single malt whisky. We also distill many other varieties of whisky, such as rye whisky and bourbon although these will not be ready until 2016. Our spirits are available directly from the distillery retail store/tasting bar or from the finest BC & Alberta restaurants, pubs and Liquor stores.

The Gentleman
They should have taught you this in school....
by Dr. Christian Brix
WHAT DOES SHE WANT? I will come right out and start by saying that I am NOT an expert on what women want. A short conversation with some of my exes would likely confirm that quickly. With that said however, it doesn’t take much research or many different conversations with honest women to find out what they are really looking for in their men. Perhaps a gentleman will not excel in every aspect, but if you really want to know what a great girl wants, it is usually something that resembles this list... Be ambitious: Most guys think it’s the money women are drawn to, but it isn’t. It’s actually the ambition and sense of responsibility the money implies. Women want a guy who is constantly driven to be better, smarter and more successful. I am not sure if this also applies to completing Halo 4. Know what you want: There is little worse than a guy who can’t make a decision. Women want you to be confident and decisive. “I don’t know, where do you want to go?” Stop it! Being a gentleman or even just a man requires being secure with yourself and your choices. Make her laugh: This attribute seems to be on almost every woman’s list. It is important that we realize this doesn’t mean you have to be the jack-ass at the party dancing on the table. Having a sense of humor is about being light and playful with a sensibility of what people around you appreciate. Be smart: Here is the good news: if you aren’t a genius, its okay. Women want a guy who can speak intelligently about some things, but who also knows how to shut up when tempted to talk about things he knows nothing about. It is more about an “awareness” of the world, people and things around you that is the most appealing. There are many kinds of intelligence.

Take care of her: When she sees you being kind, courteous and respectful to people around you (servers, strangers, a hamster, your mom, etc), she sees your good heart. Along with a good heart, she values the feeling of being secure and protected. Protecting her and caring for people around you doesn’t require bicep curls and bench pressing, but it won’t hurt! Shut up: When it comes to communication, there are two aspects: what you send out, and what you take in. Both are important. She wants you to LISTEN TO HER! When you pay attention, listen, and retain what she is saying, you are scoring major points with any woman. Trim your nose hair: We all know men are known for being more “visual” when it comes to who they are attracted to. No matter what you have heard, it IS important to women too. You have to take care of yourself and make an effort. It doesn’t mean you have to grow that hipster haircut and get thick rimmed glasses...it just means you have to care. Passion!: Women look at a guy who is passionate about something in a totally different way. Caring that much about their business, their dog, skateboarding, or stamps shows dedication, commitment, and excitement. They will sub-consciously equate that to the potential for passion elsewhere...like in the bedroom! Albert Einstein said: “Men marry women with the hope they will never change. Women marry men with the hope they will change. Invariably they are both disappointed.” you may not nail every target in the list, but you can certainly keep aiming. TIPS TO ...
BUY AN ENGAGEMENT WATCH How to Buy the Right Watch With wedding season in full swing and more and more of my female customers asking me about the perfect engagement or wedding gift for their soon to be spouse, I find myself telling them the same thing:
factured timepiece movement (if you treat it right). He may have bought your engagement ring at a jewellery store in the mall, but that does not mean you should buy his watch there as well.
Why not a watch?
The reality is that good watches are like good men; they are hard to find, and when you are trying to pick out that perfect timepiece for him you need to spend some time researching and learning about what you are getting yourself into. There are the four C’s when buying a quality diamond Cut/Clarity/Colour/Carat, when buying a watch all you need to remember is S-W-I-S-S! If it’s not then it in all likelihood it won’t stand the test of time.
The popularity of an engagement or wedding timepiece for the bride to give to the groom has risen in popularity over the last ten years. With more couples both working and many women exceeding their spouse in their professional lives it seems fitting that both parties receive a gift signifying that commitment. The only trouble is that its hard to find something that will last as long as a diamond that most guys will want to wear. I suppose that is why so many women are turning to the next best thing, a quality timepiece that perhaps could help all of us guys out there keep better track of time and all of those important dates we so often forget. Either way buying a engagement watch has its own set of rules just like buying that perfect stone for that perfect girl. Here are a few things to consider: 1. The Man The first thing you must consider is the man himself. Is you guy an avid outdoorsman? A scientist? The life of the party? Where would he wear this watch you’ve given him and does he wear a watch at all? There are so many things you need to think about when buying a gift for another person, but most of all you need to make sure that what you are buying will actually be appreciated by them. A diamond ring is valuable not just because he spent however many months salary on it, but because he took the time to find the perfect design and stone that suits you. When buying his gift you need to put that same effort forth. If your groom-to-be is always out on the boat or in the woods for a hike a solid-gold Rolex may not be for him. Instead a nice stainless Submariner may be the perfect fit. If he is more a business man and does not mind showing off a bit, that large faced Hublot or Breitling may be right on time. Point is, make sure you buy for him and his lifestyle. 2. The Quality A diamond is forever, well so is a well crafted Swiss manu-
When I got engaged a good friend in the diamond business made a comment that I will never forget, “She will love what ever you give her, but it’s your responsibility to give her the stone that she deserves.” Long story short he scalped me for an extra $4000, but the sentiment is true. Quality for the one you love is of the utmost importance, and it says more about you than it does them. 3. The Cost The big question everyone finally asks me is how much should they spend on the watch. There are two answers to this question: The first is you should spend what you can afford. After all, I am a pawnbroker and most of my clientele are looking for a great deal. If you don’t have the money don’t go into debt trying to buy something you can’t afford. I mean, the reception is going to kill your bank balance anyways. If you are looking for a deal you can always come to a reputable watch dealer such as myself, or one of the few used watch stores in town, and find something that will look amazing for a fraction of the cost. The second answer seems to not be as nice to hear. The reality is there is no reason for you to spend any less on his watch than he paid for your engagement ring. If everything is equal and you are partners then why not spend the same cost as that diamond? Yet if you’ve considered who he is, what he likes, and you’ve found something that he will enjoy that is high-quality, then money does not matter. You’ve got the watch for him and now you’re ready to walk down that aisle ... so long as you both show up! Dylan Lenz
Dylan Lenz is the owner of Downtown Pawnbrokers in Kelowna, BC. He is the youngest pawnshop owner in Canada and a self proclaimed watch snob. Dylan has been watch broker since he was seventeen, he personally owns an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, Rolex Submariner Double Red, and a Mickey Mouse sing along watch his mom gave him for his 6th birthday.

BOATING LIFE!
Beautiful isolated beaches, calm bays, multiple marinas and yacht clubs, charter and rental companies - boating on Okanagan Lake is an experience you won’t forget!
Kelowna Yacht Club - New Icon on the Waterfront The Kelowna Yacht Club’s new building is already an icon on Kelowna’s waterfront promenade. Its fabulously fresh design, inspired by the lake and the boats moored in Canada’s largest private marina, gives the impression of a ship moving through the water. From the street, it blends perfectly with the surrounding neighbourhood by featuring brick and glass behind the decades-old heritage trees. Members enjoy upscale-casual dining featuring a farm-to-table philosophy and an exceptional selection of local and interna-
tional wines. The restaurant offers stunning, unobstructed lake views, both inside and on the covered decks – the largest on Lake Okanagan. Since 1945, the Kelowna Yacht Club members have developed a dynamic, friendly community with the clubhouse serving as a home-away-from-home. Members Eric and Lynda Stansfield joined the club to meet people, participate in activities and learn new skills. “To us, the best part of being a member is the fact that we have made many new genuine and sincere friendships which we know will be long lasting.” The Kelowna Yacht Club provides social
events, volunteer opportunities, youth and adult sailing programs, disabled sailing and watersport lessons for boaters and non-boaters alike. With multiple types of memberships the Yacht Club community offers something for everyone. THE
2015 Formula 350 CBR “What a beauty!” That’s what we thought when we first saw the Formula 350 CBR (“Crossover Bowrider”). As the name suggests the CBR combines the strong features of three distinctly different types of boat into an all-new type that provides a good solution for people who want more utility in a bowrider. A bowrider that with 35 feet in length is the world’s largest! Designated a “crossover” there’s a bow lounge (separated from the aft cockpit by a solid door) boasting seating for up to 12 people. Within the starboard-side console resides a cabin with berth, a galley that features a Corian counter, sink and microwave, a TV, and enclosed head that is located on the starboard side and truncated. And below the water we find the typical deep-V hull Formula is famous for. Let’s have a look at the engines. The CBR comes with a pair of 430-hp 8.2 MAG HO MerCruiser engines’ good for a top speed of 56.6 mph (91.1 kph). The Formula 350 CBR - for the boater who realizes the need for more cockpit, a smaller cabin and a wave-taming hull who wants to do a lot of entertaining by day, and some cruising on long weekends. must read | books THE BOY IN THE BOOK By Nathan Penlington The Boy in the Book is a unique and widely acclaimed biography that reads as a smoothly as a fiction novel. Nathan Penlington is a performer, as well as a writer, and he uses all of his not-inconsiderable talent of wit and humor to create this captivating memoir that is already receiving five-star reviews! Penlington, like many 80’s kids, grew up reading CYOA novels – Choose Your Own Adventures. In the pages of a set he bought on eBay he found more than just a thrilling adventure. He found the writings of another little boy who used the novels as a sort of diary. Scribbled in the margins on the pages, Nathan discovers the thoughts of a boy –Terence John Prendergast – who lived such a tormented life he contemplated suicide and yet who still had an undeniable humor and sense of adventure. The Boy in the Book is the riveting journey of Nathan’s quest (almost an obsession) to find Terence and learn what happened to him. Did he find a friend, a confidante, someone to confide in and trust? Nathan goes on his own adventure and must come to terms with the resonance he feels with Terrence. This biography is a gut-wrenching and hopeful experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. Headline | Paperback: 320 pages | ISBN-13: 9780755365692 Release date: July 1, 2014
LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE MOSQUE By Zarqa Nawaz
“The Quran says it’s ok to eat at McDonald’s but only if you order the McFish.” Zarqa Nawaz, acclaimed script-writer and comedian, has produced a new and seriously entertaining book describing her life as it has ‘always straddled two cultures.’ The book tells hilarious stories from her experiences dealing with repair men (and the necessary convenience of having a sink within arms reach of the toilet) all the way to incorporating fashionable jewelry around a hijab. Zarqa gives her readers an intense and unfiltered glimpse into her life as one faithful to important family traditions but who has also learned to incorporate a great deal of western traits. Nawaz bridges what remains of western prejudice in one fell - and astonishingly graceful - stroke. Join her through tremendously funny, and hard and sad and uplifting, stories and experience for yourself the life of a woman daring enough to tackle the challenge of bringing together two vastly different cultures. Be prepared to laugh out loud! (See also Little Mosque on the Prairie - the basis of CBC’s popular comedy show). There are no hassles or worries, only peace of mind, as all of the planning and logistics are taken care of for you. They are in control of every detail, so they can orchestrate your whole trip smoothly. For convenience, 6 star touring is allinclusive. You pay one price up front, so there are no unpleasant surprises. In these luxury small group tours, you will be traveling in good company with worldly, like-minded travelers. Solo travelers are welcomed, and special family tours are available. All the tour directors are exceptional story tellers, and are experts in local culture. You will have the privilege of special access to activities and events, so you never have to settle for the ordinary. You will revel in front row seats in the Sambadrome for the Carnaval in Rio De Janeiro, enjoy premier seating for the Kentucky Derby, or the Chelsea Flower show in London. Would you like a private dinner in the Vatican? Or, an after-hours tour of the Sistine Chapel with only 20 people,
and when it is so quiet you can hear a pin drop? With luxury touring, all things are possible! Where would you like to go? Europe is always exciting, with tours to countries like Italy, France, Great Britain, Ireland and Turkey showcasing their culture and history. Taucks’ “Grand Australia and New Zealand tour” is extremely popular. In the Outback you will see Ayers rock, Australia’s massive sandstone monolith, which glows red at dawn and sunset. There is snorkeling near the Great Barrier Reef, gondola rides in the rainforest, a visit to The Sydney Opera House, a hot air balloon ride, and wildlife parks with adorable koalas, wallabies and kangaroos. A thrilling jet boat excursion and a visit to Fjord land National Park, a helicopter ride to Bob’s Peak, sheep shearing demonstrations, and so much more! That’s 6 star touring, and living life to the fullest! Machu Picchu, one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” in Peru, is a special part of Taucks’ “Empire of the Incas: Peru and Bolivia tour.” You will see many cute llamas and alpacas, as well as women in their colorful layered dresses and hats. You can even buy a hat, or alpaca sweater to take home. I did! A train will take you to Machu Picchu, so you can explore this mountaintop wonder for yourself! I will always remember the feeling of “awe” that I had when the early morning sun slowly unveiled the mist-

shrouded ruins of Machu Picchu among the rugged peaks of the Andes. Very cool. For something closer to home, and very Canadian, you can go on the “Manitoba: Polar bear adventure!” You will travel in a safe, heated all-terrain tundra vehicle, drinking in the magnificence of the icy white frozen tundra, while looking for snowy owls, white arctic foxes, falcons, and of course the giant polar bears and their cubs. Think of the pictures you will take! There is also a dog sled ride with local mushers, and time to learn about sculptures and Inuit artifacts. You can also buy a pair of authentic Mukluks to take home, to keep your toes toasty! Abercrombie and Kent is another exceptional tour company. It was started in 1962, and provides small group travel to over 100 countries on 7 continents. They specialize in luxury, wildlife, culture and history. A & K offer guaranteed departures with a minimum of 2 people, and are passionate about sustainable tourism and conservation. “Chef’s Table” events are new this year, and offer exclusive tableside education about your destinations local cuisine. You can also “Ride like a Local” by taking a pedal-powered cyclo in Ho Chi Minh, a tuk-tuk in Mumbai or travel by camel. Warning… camels really do spit! While A & K have many adventures to choose from, their African Safaris are unmatched. They offer luxurious and romantic lodges to sleep in, and have exclusive mobile tented camps on their safaris that are safe and allow prime viewing of game. Don’t worry, you won’t be sleeping with a twig in your back! In the tents you will get comfortable beds (king size is available upon request), and a private en suite bathroom with flush toilets, running water in a sink, and a bucket shower with a spectacular sky view. Now you will experience more than 6 stars! One of Abercrombie and Kent’s most popular African trips is: “The Great Migration Safari in Style.” Across the Serengeti plains, and in national parks and game reserves, you are sure to experience goose bumps and have unprecedented photo opportunities for zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, elephants, lions and rhinos touring with A & K. Another company that has been on the forefront of distinguished luxury travel for over 40 years, is Big Five Tours and Expeditions. Their mission statement is: “We don’t tell stories better, we tell better stories.” Big Five offers award-winning adventures in 67 countries. They also lead the industry with “24 hour White Glove Service” tailored to your needs, and they will exceed your expectations. They think of everything, so you don’t have to! travel business. Whether you want to gain a deeper awareness and learn about culture in Myanmar, Cambodia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Belize, and Vietnam to start with, you are in good hands. I also have to mention Kensington tours, for all the golfers, music, film and television fans. Kensington offers tailor made travel to over 90 countries, and they can also get you into exclusive Championship sporting events like the Masters, Grand Prix, the Olympics or horse racing. If glitz and glamour are more your style, let’s arrange a trip to the Golden Globes or Grammies so you can hang out with the stars! Other tour companies such as Globus, Cosmos, Trafalgar, Insight vacations, G Adventures, and Goway also offer excellent value for your money, and a lot of exciting itineraries. Many people add on a tour at the beginning or end of a cruise as well. Mark Twain once said “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do, than by the ones you did do.” What are your dreams? Let’s make them come true, and feed your wanderlust!

Top Dog
By Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie | Images by Victor Poirier
There’s a new dog in town and his name is Watson. And, if you are a pooch, you really, really want to hang out with him. This gorgeous rescue Weinmaraner’s ‘mommy’, Laura Vigar, opened ‘Watson’s Hound Lounge’ in November last year, a one stop shop that is more spa experience than kennel and - as such - truly is a doggy daycare with a difference. Quite a few differences actually. Firstly, there is the facility itself. At over 7200 sq feet, Watson’s is a kennel-free environment that features a large indoor exercise yard for large dogs, a smaller separate space for the more diminutive breeds, and a chill-out area with a big comfy sofa if it all gets bit much for your pooch. There are also big garage doors leading out onto an additional outdoor exercise area, so your dogs can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air on nice days. Then there’s the personal attention. At Watson’s Hound Lounge the ‘pack size’ is strictly limited, so there are never too many dogs at any given time. There is also a strict people to dogs ratio, so your dog will always have human interaction. And, if - like many of us - you suffer from more separation anxiety than your pet does, Watson’s also offers you web cam contact throughout your pet’s stay. Yes, you can log on via computer or smart phone from wherever you are and see what your best friend is getting up to. “Our facility is wired with 10 web-cams that clients can log into at any time of the day from anywhere in the world to check in on their pup,” says Vigar. “We get

to know our clients and their dogs and strive to build long lasting relationships with them. I want each and every client and dog that comes to Watson’s to feel special and appreciated.” Now let’s talk location. Situated in the new Stewart Plaza on Kirshner Road, Watson’s location is conveniently located for anyone working in the Landmark Buildings, Orchard Park or Orchard Plaza, or anyone who travels down Harvey or Springfield Road for their daily commute. Then there’s the extras. “We stock ACANA dog food, Bowser Beds, Dewley Collars, a selection of RC Pet Products such as trail boots and trail packs, DogSafe Pet First Aid Kits,” says Laura. “I have chosen products from Canadian companies that are all made in Canada. It is important to me personally and from a business perspective to keep things as local as possible and to support other local and Canadian businesses.” There is even a line of gorgeous hand knit doggy wear for your best friend. Pet grooming facilities are also available on site, so you can drop off a scruffy pooch, and then go home with a clean and shiny one later in the day. (Please note, Watson’s needs two days advance booking for grooming appointments.) Lastly, there is the attention to detail, which clearly shines through in the facilities design aesthetic. The greeting area looks like it would be at home in a design magazine, with white walls, wooden floors and a chandelier or two. It is so pleasant, you might just want to hang out yourself.
“Coming from a long line of entrepreneurs and having and loving dogs (Weimaraners) all my life, I knew that one day I wanted to own my own business. While attending University I developed my business plan to one day open a high end dog business,” says Vigar. “When my husband and I decided to relocate back to Kelowna to be close to our parents and start our own family, we were still both working full time and we needed a place for our dog to stay during the day while we were at work. Through our own need - and as I soon found others with the same need - I decided to take the leap this past year while on maternity leave of finally opening my own business.” Watson’s take bookings and also allow for last minute drop ins. The rates are $17 for up to 5 hours, or $27 for a full day. Short stays of less than 2 hours can be arranged for $10. You can also buy four visits at once (to be used within 1 month) for the discounted rate of $21 per visit, or $15 for half days. You will need to fill out some paperwork on your first visit, and provide proof of shoots, etc, But once your file is set up you are good to go. Woof.
Watson’s Hound Lounge: #185 - 1855 Kirschner Road,Kelowna, V1Y 4N7. Tel: 778 484 4479. www.watsonshoundlounge.com. Watson’s is open Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm, but earlier and later drop offs/pick ups can be arranged.
SUMMER 2014
Walking into the Gypsy Soul HQ is like venturing into a different world. Lavish fabrics hang from the walls, and vibrant color fills the air with breaths of silk. Incense is burning in the corner and you feel as though you’ve stepped into a clothing shop situated in the bustling streets of Bombay. India is where Brandi and Chelsea’s journey began, when the two friends made a spontaneous decision to jump on a flight across the ocean and begin the adventure that would spark the birth of Gypsy Soul. Brandi and Chelsea were immediately inspired by the people and culture that surrounded them while wandering the colorful streets of Bombay and Goa. Opulent silks bursting with brilliant colors and patterns filled the cities of India, and the founders of Gypsy Soul decided that they had the share this beauty with their friends back home in Kelowna. They began the design process and came home with a collection of bohemian inspired pieces. Brandi and Chelsea’s energy has always been that off free-spirited adventure, and the slogan they live by and have coined on some of their pieces is “Always Go”. Ever since they returned from their world travels these ladies have encapsulated those words and have not stopped growing, evolving, or moving forward. They began by selling their designs from the backroom of Chelsea’s home, but quickly realized that the small space was no match for the velocity at which the business was growing. Gypsy Soul then moved to a larger space on Bernard Ave and soon outgrew this location as well. This brought Brandi and Chelsea to open the gorgeous Gypsy Soul HQ storefront in the
heart of Kelowna’s Cultural District. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by stunning floor length kimonos, crocheted bathing suits, silky kaftans, and beautiful leathers. Not only will you be able to enjoy the clothes, but you will also have the chance to meet the amazing Gypsy Soul family. Brandi and Chelsea, as well as the rest of their team, are some of the most authentic people, beaming with contagious positivity that will immediately bring a smile to your face. Gypsy Souls newest collection “Lost In Paradise” just dropped and is full of dreamy pastels and tonnes of perfect bohemian summer staples. Staying true to their nomadic nature, the Gypsy team is taking the music festival scene by storm and setting up shop at 53 festivals in the coming months. Gypsy Soul is not only a clothing brand, but it captures the essence of living your life with an extraordinary sense of adventure. These ladies provide a beautiful reminder of the wanderlust that exists inside all of us, and encourage us to never stop exploring; to always go.

Under Fashion… The Straight Skinny on Shapewear. Shapewear is the term for any undergarment that shapes the body. (Often you will hear women refer to Shapewear as “Spanx” a name brand made famous by Oprah.) Shapewear generally uses compression to smooth out a woman’s figure, particularly helpful under clothing that is made from clingy knit materials. While today’s modern versions of Shapewear have come a long way since the days of the corset and the girdle, they still are an extra layer worn under clothing that must be compressive in order to shape. Even with the best in breathable fabrics they can be warm. So if you are going to foray into the world of Shapewear follow these guidelines: •
Your best piece of Shapewear is a good fitting quality bra and good posture. A good fitting bra lifts the breast off of the stomach, elongating the torso, making us look slimmer and more proportioned; clothing then hangs properly on the body. Standing up with good posture pulls in the stomach automatically.
•
Think smooth, not move! A little compression can smooth out a shape - too much compression moves flesh into places that you don’t want it too. Be realistic Shapewear is designed to be a helping hand... it is not a magic wand.
•
Wear as little Shapewear as you need to get the job done. Yes you want to look great however you need to be able to breathe, sit, eat, and go to the bathroom during the course of your day or event. You don’t want to be feeling faint or passing out because of your Shapewear!
•
Get used to your Shapewear ; wear it for prolonged periods before the day of your event and get used to wearing it. Shapewear is like shoes - if you are used to wearing running shoes but decide to go out in stilettos; unless you are used to walking in the stilettos your feet will probably start to hurt and you won’t be comfortable.
•
Explore other options! Often women don’t need compression Shapewear; what they need is something to keep the clingy material from clinging. Silk slips and pantyhose when combined with a good fitting bra can often give you that smooth silhouette without the heat and compression of Shapewear.
Bottom line: Shapewear should enhance your self esteem and allow you to present a more confident appearance. Buy clothes that fit YOUR body and stop comparing yourself to the mannequin in the window. Remember posture and confidence do more than the best Shapewear in the world.

The Ultimate Okanagan Winery Tour! With more than 80% of the total vineyard acreage in BC, the Okanagan Valley is home to more than 130 licensed world-class and boutique wineries. Many of them invite visitors for wine tastings and tours, and some even offer a culinary experience in their own bistro, dining room or vineyard/ vista view patios. No wonder that a wine tour is top of the list for tourists and residents alike! There are several wine tour operators providing their services that makes sure the connoisseur gets a wonderful experience to and from the vineyard. At ICON we have visited most of our valleys wineries in the last 4 years, but we have never enjoyed the ‘ experience ‘ of a wine tour - this was about to change! We decided to fulfill our wish in the most stylish, or may we say “iconic,” way possible - with our own private helicopter for the day! We hired Valhalla Helicopters, who has permission to land at over 30 vineyards in the Okanagan, invited our very good friends Jillian Harris, Justin Pasutto, Dena Barabash, and Joel Sherlock and customized our very own tour. Icon picked some of the most scenic wineries in the South Okanagan: Our tour began in West Kelowna with our first stop at Therapy Vineyards in Naramata. Next was Painted Rock on Skaha Lake, followed by Blue Mountain Vineyard in Okanagan Falls and Road 13 Vineyards in Oliver. The Tuscan-inspired LaStella Winery in Osoyoos was our last stop, before we went on the breathtaking 30 minute flight back to West Kelowna. We created great memories that day! A helicopter winery tour is truly the ultimate experience for people who are looking for a unique wine tasting adventure with VIP personality. Thank you Valhalla and all the amazing wineries that had us as your guests, looking forward to visiting again very soon! SUMMER 2014

Blue Mountain Vineyard, Okanagan Falls

A short flight from our last stop we are overlooking yet another lake! Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars rests on a very picturesque bench with beautiful views overlooking Vaseux Lake that have been cover material for many travel publications. Surrounded by a protected area and framed by steep blue mountains, the prized geography of undulating hills and mountain protection was swiftly recognized to offer varying micro-climates. This enormous potential of the terroir led the Mavety family to establish the vineyard in 1971 and release their first wines under the Blue Mountain label in 1991. They can now make the rare claim of 43 years of continuous grape production by one family. Along with exceptional terroir, owners Ian, Jane, Matt and Christie Mavety credit their success to the integrity of their estate. To the Mavety family, “estate” means more than the piece of land; it extends to the practice of both viticulture and wine making by the same owner-operators. At Blue Mountain, it also means the use of 100% estate-grown
grapes. Following the estate concept to its fullest extent sets Blue Mountain apart from most North American wineries. The Winery On their 32-hectare estate, Blue Mountain make limited quantities of complex wines from noble varietals including Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Blue Mountain specializes in sparkling wine made in the Méthode Traditionnelle style with a minimum of 24 months on tirage. MAY WE RECOMMEND ...

Bernard Richards Manufacture (BRM) Inspired by motorsports, driven by craftsmanship, and engineered for exclusivity, Bernard Richards Manufacture (BRM) creates one-of-a-kind timepieces defined by pure racing spirit. Synonymous with individuality, the iconic label is designed by and for true originals. Devoting more than two years to experimentation and development before launching BRM’s inaugural chronograph in 2003, founder Bernard Richards channeled his passion for technical precision to establish a brand that’s gone the distance as the only French watchmaking manufacture. BRM’s combination of hands-on assembly and nano-technology reflects Richards’ mechanical expertise, and his innovative leadership has garnered global partnerships with luminaries including Gulf Oil, Abarth, Marco Andretti, and many more. The company’s deliberately racy wristwatches represent a return to real luxury through meticulous personalization. Fully customizable, BRM products are built for authenticity, and the color, material, and movement of every model is tailored to client aspirations.
ONE-OF-A-KIND DESIGN: Go inside Robbie Dickson’s custom chronograph for a closer look BRM’s V12-44-Sport-AR
“Exceptional performance begins with excellence of detail,” Richards quipped, underscoring BRM’s commitment to surpassing “ordinary expectations.” Attracting track mavericks like Robbie Dickson, BRM’s bespoke watches have become the ultimate accessory for collectors seeking rare and genuine timepieces. Best known as the entrepreneur behind events like the Diamond Rally and the Canadian Bullrun, Dickson recently tapped BRM to configure the perfect complement to his avant garde Lamborghini Aventador. The challenge? Deliver a top-speed chronograph that incorporated the car’s matchless, turquoise shade, which belongs exclusively to Dickson. The self-described “emphatic gear head” was predictably decisive when adapting his chosen model, the V12-44-Sport-AR. Requesting the Lamborghini’s eyecatching color for the timepiece’s perforated hands and top-stitched strap, he also opted for BRM’s skeleton dial and embellished the pushers and lugs with black PVD. Heeding a final recommendation from BRM Americas’ president Frederic Gasser, Dickson finished his chronograph by having his initial added to the crown. Commenting on the unique, statement-making collaboration with Dickson, Gasser concluded, “BRM has evolved, but the finite craftsmanship that goes into each element of our machines will always remain true to the spirit that defines our foundation.” www.BRM-Manufacture.com SUMMER 2014

2015 Mazda3 “New looks, new engine, new interior and brand new multimedia system. Mazda plays big with its fully redesigned 2014 Mazda3 and could very well end up winning big. Again.” — AUTONET.ca “The Best Just Got Better.” Fans of the most popular Mazda model have a new car to enjoy. The 2014 Mazda3 has been completely redesigned using the company’s Skyactiv philosophy. It is an engineering and manufacturing philosophy wrapped around the goal of increased fuel efficiency and fully launched with this brand-new model. Offered in four-door and Sport hatchback versions, buyers have two available engines to choose from: A base 2.0-litre four-cylinder (the powerplant in all 3i models) which delivers 155hp and 148 lb-ft at 3000 rpm, and the larger 2.5L four that’s exclusive to the GT. This more powerful 184-hp, 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine brings quicker acceleration without much of a fuel-economy penalty. We drove the Mazda3 Sport GT ... and were really impressed with the upscale attitude and sporty driving dynamics. Fair enough, our tester was fully equipped, but many of the great features can be found in the base Mazda3. First of all - we really liked the look of our hatchback GT. Or, better said, all hatchbacks as the only true giveaway for the GT seems to be dual exhaust tip. The interior is completely redesigned as well. Our car had the Convenience Package, and also came with heated seats and mirrors, leather wrapped steering wheel, and rain sensing wipers. What we liked best (and we love gadgets!) is the new infotainment interface HMI (Human Machine Interface) that comes with a voice-activated navigation system, and a head’s-up driver information display. Very cool! So let’s take it out for the road test! With the 2.5 liter engine comes a six-speed automatic transmission featuring shift paddles. Lots of fun, but we must admit we would have loved to drive this engine with a manual stick. But hey, can’t have it all, right? The Mazda3 is quiet on the road, but once you hit the accelarator the dual exhaust of the GT gives us the sound you would expect from a Grand Tourismo. And with 185 lb-ft of torque the car accelerates in little more than 8 seconds - and this with fuel consumption ratings of 7.5/5.4 (EnerGuide) and 8.7/6.4 (EPA). So - when do YOU book a test drive? 2014 Mazda3 Sport Base Price (GX): $16,995

2015 Cadillac Escalade Welcome to the next-generation Escalade/ ESV. Is the arrival of the most anticipated generation of Cadillac’s crown jewel worthy merely of an introduction, or more of a coronation? We would argue the latter considering the level of design, craftsmanship and detail that transformed it into the epitome of luxury that many see as the benchmark for full-size luxury SUVs. Seven years after the last model has been introduced,we see a familiar yet very modern face with the big Cadillac crest sitting on the wide horizontally-barred grille. The fourth generation Escalade gets a new platform, a new 6.2-liter V8, new exterior styling, and a new interior design. What made us fall in love: Cadillac has genuinely stepped up its game recently in terms of materials and fit and finish. And then there’s the technology: A 12.3” high-resolution screen handles instrument panel duty, while a 8” screen in the center console is the headquarters for Cadillac User Experience (CUE), the brand’s infotainment interface. But there’s so much more ... A big step-up is the power fold-flat third (and second) row seats. Which brings luggage capacity to up to 120.9 cubic feet (long wheelbase)! Wow! There are three versions of both the regular Escalade and the ESV — Base, Luxury and Premium. Just drive by Bannister Cadillac in Kelowna and check out this brand-new full-size luxury SUV. 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe “Creating a sports Coupe is the purest of design tasks, and also the most challenging; get it right and aesthetically the result will be as dynamic as the car should be rewarding to drive. In F-TYPE Coupe, I believe we’ve got it right. The purity of the C-X16 concept has been retained without compromise; the long bonnet, low roofline and tapering cabin of the F-TYPE Coupe inspires me every time I see it.” - Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar
“An All-Aluminum Beauty” - this is most likely the best way to describe Jaguar’s stunning new F-Type Coupe with its gently sloping, delicate roofline. Many Jaguar enthusiasts will see some E-Type in the profile. While the F-type roadster is a natural choice for many Okanagan customers, the “serious drivers” will have held out for the coupe with its rigidity. Below the belt line, just about everything is the same as the convertible. Available in three versions, the entry-level engine offerings mirror those of the roadster: The F-TYPE S Coupe and F-TYPE Coupe are powered by 3-liter supercharged V6 engines in 380hp and 340hp forms respectively, giving 0-100 km/h in 4.4/4.9 seconds and top speeds of 275/259 km/h. The top-model F-TYPE R Coupe is powered by a 550hp 5-liter supercharged V8 engine and will reach 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 300 km/h (electronically limited). Here’s what you should do: Call our local dealership and schedule a test-drive! You really have to see this leaping cat in flesh, hear it growl and feel its power. As Jaguar says: “The majority of buyers will come from other brands. “ And we can’t blame them! Jaguar of Kelowna 1210 Leathead Rd. Kelowna 250.491.9348 www.jaguarofkelowna.com SUMMER 2014

SHARE SALE
!

ASSET SALE
There is a lot of confusion when it comes to understanding the difference between an asset sale and a share sale in Canada so here is a brief explanation.
SHARE SALE
ASSET SALE
When the shares of a corporation are sold, everything from the company name to the liabilities are transferred including assets and the employees. Absolutely all parts of the organization are transferred between parties.
Selling the assets of a business means that the desks, computers, rights to the business name, goodwill etc. are sold to the buyer instead of simply selling the shares in the corporation carrying on the business to the buyer. When assets are sold they are sold at current fair market value. This usually gives the new buyer a higher tax cost base for the assets to be written off over time compared to the depreciated value remaining on a corporation’s books after several years.
Why is this better for the seller and worse for the buyer? One reason is because of unknown liabilities. It is possible for a corporation to be sold without the buyer’s knowledge of some future liabilities such as unfiled lawsuits or upcoming audits. Although the issue may be the fault of the previous shareholders, corporations are entities that are separate from owners and will be held accountable. That being said, if the seller behaved fraudulently they may be held accountable, however; there is no guarantee that you will be able to find them and settle accordingly. Finally, one of the strongest reasons for a corporation’s owners to want to sell shares is because of the $800,000 (new 2014) per person Canadian Capital Gains Exemption on the sale of a qualifying small business shares. If you have capital gains from the sale of shares, up to $800,000 of exemption is available for deduction against such gains. If you are unsure whether you qualify for this exemption check with your accountant and find out. A share purchase has a number of benefits and drawbacks depending on whether you are the buyer or seller. A share purchase transaction can have considerable tax advantages to the seller, but at the same time expose the purchaser to unwanted risks.

ICON OKANAGAN

The assets, including goodwill, can be written off over several years according to a formula prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency known as depreciation. Being able to negotiate the price of the assets can provide the best tax advantages. When the assets of a corporation are sold, all of the liabilities and tax filings remain with the corporation. In this case the buyer assumes no responsibility for the prior activities or filings of the corporation. The new buyer can then incorporate their own company. Whether it is best to transfer a company through assets or shares depends on individual circumstances. If you have the same company for sale under the two options, you will get a lower purchase price with the share purchase because the buyer is inheriting some risk. Every transaction represents an overall compromise between the buyer and seller. Advantages and disadvantages of one option over another should be considered in the context of the broader deal. These are only a few of the reasons that sellers want to sell shares and buyers want to buy assets but it should provide an understanding of some of the fundamental
SUMMER 2014
differences. We also strongly advise you to obtain the advice of a tax professional, such as a chartered accountant and a lawyer at the same time. There can be other advantages or disadvantages in buying the assets of a business only versus the shares in a corporation. If you are buying or selling an interest in a business, you will need professional help in making the decision about the way your sale will be structured. As an expert Business Broker, we will be able to help you with many of these decisions.

A Vision Realized: Caetani Cultural Centre Nestled on the slopes of Pleasant Valley Road lies one of Vernon’s cultural treasures. Steeped in a fascinating history, Caetani Cultural Centre (C3) has long been synonymous with the stories and personality of artist, teacher and community figure, Sveva Caetani. In recent years, the Centre has defined a niche for itself in the Okanagan arts scene by offering unique programming, including its popular local and international artist residencies. In 1994, Sveva bequeathed her home to the community with the wish that it serve as a facility for artistic and critical exploration. Established in 2008, the Caetani Cultural Society has brought her vision to life through the centre’s creative and thought-provoking programming. Festivals On Ah... what would the summer be without a festival - especially in the Okanagan? Defined as: a) an annual celebration or anniversary, or b) an organised series of concerts, plays or movies, typically held annually and in the same place, every year the OK Valley plays host to a plethora of these events, with the greatest concentration happening - unsurprisingly enough - in the summer season. A quick look through the 2014 ‘Ultimate Summer Festival Guide (published by BC Musician) turns up 33 different festivals happening in the area between May and October. From ‘The 13th Annual Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival’ (Penticton, June - sorry, by the time of printing you’ll have missed it but there’s always next year!), to Keloha Arts and Music Festival (Kelowna, July), to the Okanagan Pride Festival (Kelowna, Aug), to the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival (Salmon Arm, Aug), to the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival (various locations, October), there truly is something for everyone. “I love festivals so much because of all the amazing people and, of course, the music and art,” says Bobbie-Lee Letawsky, fashion design student and music festival aficianado. “By the end of a festival I have been introduced to so many new artists and have met so many great people.” Yes, everyone loves a festival - for a variety of reasons. “Festivals are so much fun, There are all kinds of vendors, and activities, different types of food. There’s just so much to do and experience,” enthuses Anita McFarlane, yoga instructor. “I have been a participant in the theatre festivals for 4 years, both as an actor and as an audience member,” says Dorothy Dalba. “I’m a part of the theatre community, so it’s always like a mini-reunion with fellow theatre people. That’s always great.” Festivals aren’t just about fun; they also bring serious revenue to the region. According to The Okanagan Wine Festivals Society, local wine festivals help generate $87 million in direct annual economic impact and $52 million in indirect economic impact. Blair Baldwin, General Manager of the organisation states: “Our Festivals have grown with the wine industry and are a wonderful part of the cultural fabric of the valley.” The society hosts three
SUMMER 2014
major festivals, plus a range of other events annually, “Everyone who loves an authentic experience with wine, food and people has something to choose from,” says Baldwin. McFarlane, owner of CircusYoga Kelowna, also recognises the value of festival participation from a business standpoint. “Festivals are a great way to promote my programs and classes; I get to expose my business to a wide range of people in a short period of time,” she says. “For instance, Fat Cat Children’s Festival is great for me because I do a lot of children’s events and parties.” Festivals also offer a great way for the community to support the arts communities while broadening one’s own horizons. “I think it’s so important to support the arts. We have such a high caliber of talent in the Okanagan,” says Dalba. “At festivals you usually get to see a few shows that are truly unique and some which push the limits, which can still be a bit risky in the Okanagan.” Then, of course, there is that one major ingredient the festivals can’t do without, and the Okanagan provides so well. “The weather in the Okanagan Valley really lends itself to festivals as well,” says McFarlane. “Generally, it is always quite gorgeous.”

How Artwork Makes A Positive Statement About You! -Louise Lambert, Wine Country Studios
Your artwork is the first thing people notice when they enter your home. Art makes as powerful a statement as the car you drive or the wine you serve to your guests. It tells a story about you. Art transforms your homes like few other designs elements can while enhancing your home by creating focal points, simulating feelings, memories as well as providing colour and light. Select the art that you like - don’t worry about matching or following trends. You will know right away if it is something you love.
“One does not have to be a connoisseur to realize that art makes a room come alive” states Margaret Russell, editor and chief of Architectural Digest. A space in your home can have inviting furniture, animated colours and patterns, but without at least one or two paintings the magic is missing.
You will recognize Louise Lambert’s work as it has been on covers of American Express wine guides, Wine Trails Magazine, Okanagan Art, festival guides, the YLW Connection, Okanagan Life, Okanagan Home, as well as displayed in wineries, resorts, business offices and corporate boardrooms. What you may not know is that these works were all inspired and commissioned by people like yourself. They had a vision which Lambert fulfilled. Nicknamed the, ‘Lady of Light’ for her ability to capture the spectacular lights and shadows, Louise has completed more than 195 commissioned works, of portraits and landscapes -some as large as six by eight feet- for homeowners, wineries and commercial businesses. Since becoming a professional 14 years ago, her commission work is in demand. Crediting her clients with the inspiration for the work and involving them in the art experience goes well above and beyond what

Many collectors of art want to have a personal connection with their paintings, creating an everlasting celebration, which holds a special place in their hearts. A commissions painting is the natural solution in finding the perfect artwork for your home, and often not that much more expensive than purchasing an original piece of quality art.
Louise has been recognized as one of West Kelowna’s ‘Leaders Among US’ and has exhibited her work in more than 68 shows throughout North America. She also teaches art in a range of public and private galleries. Wine Country Studios received quality excellence award sponsored by Mission Hill Winery. “I work for myself and I am my toughest critic. My work appeals to anyone who seeks contemporary art and wine enthusiasts are drawn to the work because of the subject matter, “said Louise.
Celebrating the relationship between wine and art through her vineyard paintings - now showcasing globally Globally known for her renditions of vineyards, both throughout North America and abroad, Louise is a professional painter who owns a working studio and art gallery, near the Mission Hill winery in Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, and is now showcasing her landscapes to the world via in the only worldwide directory of artists, UK International Artist Directory. “I am inspired by the sunlight as it falls onto the vineyards, lakes and sky, with the juxtaposition of colours and shadows. My work is reminiscent of the ‘old world’ paintings of Tuscany, Italy and France but with a contemporary ‘West Coast’ twist. I think wine and art are the most natural companions and I am very fortunate to have my studio in this part of the world,” said Louise. She chose the Okanagan in part for its resemblance to the Mediterranean and established Wine Country Studios, ten years ago. “I’d like to help expose the Okanagan to the rest of the world,” she said and is doing just that with her paintings finding homes in Australia, Europe, and the U.S. and across Canada. Jean Dennis, who founded the UK International Artist Directory, said of Louise’s work: “As I look at Louise’s paintings I immediately feel the warmth of the sun and imagine myself strolling through those wineries, an absolute pleasure. SMILE! Scotch & Cigar Night Urban Distillery, Kelowna June 5, 2014
Does anything go together better than scotch and cigars? Just one thing, whiskey, cigars and Urban Distillery. On June 4, the latter hosted an evening full of the former, for a crowd of appreciative connoisseurs. This was the Distillery’s 2nd bi-annual ‘Scotch and Cigars Night’, and for the $60 ticket price, attendees received four tastings of whiskey, rounded out by some delicious catering from Waterfront Wines and a cigar from Havana Room, Kelowna. A whiskey expert was on hand to chat and answer questions, and a great evening was had by all. We can’t wait for Number Three.

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE
RAMSDEN
Kelsey Ramsden is the founder of kelseyramsden.com, a business services firm and SparkPlay, a children’s subscription company. She founded Belvedere Place Development, and Tallus Ridge Development. Profit Magazine named her Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneur 2 years in a row. R: What is the meaning of success for you personally? K: It’s a state of mind. Based on factors that are ever changing. Sometimes it’s based on how much money I have, sometimes it’s based on the good that I’m doing or the work that I am producing. Sometimes it’s based on the connections that I made for other people. I know that’s not really a great bullet point answer but I think if it’s only based on one thing, it’s sure to be fleeting. R: So if you have one determined factor, say it’s money, maybe you’ll never have enough. K: Yeah, there is never enough. Like someone the other day asked me, “What was it like to become a millionaire?” and I was like, “I don’t know.” It happens bit by bit, you know. First you had like minus one hundred and twenty thousand dollars, then minus ninety eight thousand, then I had plus twelve hundred (laughs). And so, when you get to a million, you were just at nine hundred thousand, five hundred, you know? Um, in some places, there is never enough, right? Like why does Michael [Dell] keep working? R: Or Arianna Huffington. Somebody said, and I wish I knew the quote better, but they basically said “If your dreams can be accomplished in your lifetime you’re not thinking big enough.” Is that true of you? K: Right. Well, I hope at least I get one knocked off but you know, maybe not. I mean, if I can use the example of networking. A lot of people go to events and their objective is get as many cards as they can, but I see it very much the other way around which is, okay, I have Michael Dell’s card so I’m connected to him? No. Is he connected to me? No. You know what I’m saying? It’s about what can I give to that person. I go to those things and I think, okay, if I make one true connection, that’s worth it because that’s the kind of thing that breathes and spreads dreams bigger than me and go past me. Those are long standing dreams where it kind of comes

back to you by giving instead of trying very specifically to connect yourself with these people that you perceive to be of power [but] who don’t give time to you. R: So meaningful connections. There’s a bridge, there’s a give and take, versus just… K: Yeah, and it starts with give. R; Very true statement. How did cancer change you, Kelsey? K: If you’re fortunate enough to think you’re dead for sure and then you get to wake up… I remember one of my first appointments afterwards I said to my surgeon, “I actually think I see colours brighter. Is that possible?” And he said, “Probably medically I would tell you no, but if you believe that you can, then it is.” And that’s what cancer did for me. Connection, authenticity, because when you realize the show is super short and I could get hit by a cab, I put up with a lot less bulls___t.
not necessarily great at school, I’m a relatively normal person. I wasn’t born with any significant gifts. I’m a mom. I come from just a regular town in Canada. I wasn’t born with like connections to politicians or big money or any of that, right? It’s just about giving it a good try and admitting failure and I think that’s a humanizing thing, you know? I think they probably like that about my story. It has its angles to it, but people can relate to it. R: Now when you talk about failure, what can people learn from failure? K: Well I think the faster and more often you can fail sooner, the more likely you’re on to something of interest and you’re actually trying. And part of it is exploring yourself. I think I know myself pretty well for how I react to things and the things that I’m good and bad at, you know? And I think that allows people to connect with me even more. R: So what would be failure for you?
R: Well, you can really get the FFFF and the KKKK.
K: Oh, failure is all sorts of things. I’ve failed at French, failed to get financing… all the way to failing people who’ve trusted me to do something for them and I haven’t delivered. I don’t do that anymore but you know, I had to learn what that looked like and how that felt and what that meant for someone else for it to really hit me. I forgot to be the lunch mom like a month ago at my kid’s school. I was the Friday girl and like some poor other, more responsible mom got the call because I was travelling and I forgot, you know? Like, all that is failing.
K: There’s a lead up to it and you know what’s coming next.
R: Yeah, that’s true although at least you’re out there. You’re trying.
R: So, why do you think you were chosen two years in a row by Profit Magazine as the female entrepreneur of the year?
K: Yeah, and some people don’t like that and you have to be ok with people not liking it.
R: What’s your favourite cuss word? K: Ha ha, my favourite cuss word? I mean, I say f__k a lot,But for the purpose of actual impact? I think the MF is pretty strong. R: Oh yeah, that is a good one. That’s a go to. K: (Laughs) It’s got a little spin on the classic.
K: Why do I think I won it? Well they tell me it’s based on mathematics but um, I think I’m pretty relatable, you know? Because I was

Amy writes ... my boyfriend is great in a lot of ways except one. Weekends he just pulls on dirty old sweats and takes a day off from showering. How can I get him to clean up?
What’s
HOT
and what’s
NOT?
Personal hygiene is mandatory! No one wants to kiss someone who hasn’t brushed, and if you’ve just polished off a plate of garlic prawns, do us ALL a favour and pop a few mints. Oh and a little man/she-scaping never hurts. Be up front Amy, tell your

man that his smelly weekends aren’t working for you. Ripe is for bananas not guys and offer to wash his back in the shower.
Daniel (33) “I like it when my girlfriend lets me know how’s she’s feeling and what she wants in our relationship AND in our bed, now that’s hot”
Okay Iconics….need a little help making that hot/not call? A trend right now, an app that ... well the name is pretty self explanatory. Look at a picture someone has uploaded and rate it. When you rate someone as HOT and they rate you as HOT, you have a “connection”. Now you and your fellow HOTTIE can chat and build on your “initial superficial attraction”, maybe decide to meet ... unless they live in the next province. Hey solve that ... try location based Tinder. Choose a few flattering pics, add a catchy one sentence bio….”I love the beach, brunch and cats”…. and away you go! Tinder will inundate you with pictures at a rapid-fire pace. Sweep left REJECT sweep right ACCEPT. If you accept and so do they, you can continue and Tinder-talk till you’re ready to actually see the real thing! Ahh the power ... but swiping through all those pics day after day ... you might end up with some strange ligament damage in your thumb. Enter COFFEE MEETS BAGEL. Now you are only going to receive one option (nicknamed for some strange reason ... bagel) per day. Will you take this wholegrain bagel out for coffee….. or wait to see if tomorrow brings your favorite … blueberry? Now if you think going out on a date with some one you selected by viewing a hopefully un-photo-shopped picture and reading bios of less than 10 words is “too risky” sign up for GROUPER. This app will match you and two friends

with another likeminded group. How you sort out who gets with who after that first “group date” or what to do if you all like the same person is not included, but maybe that will come out in the updated version.
The thing is using an app like these to meet is really saying “Quick…. lets judge, and here’s our criteria: appearance, online communication skills … oh and availability!” Now I get that knowing if the other person is interested or not could be perceived as a leg up but taking the mystery of human attraction, distilling it into an app, and thinking you can find your forever person ... kind of scary! Are these apps for soulmates or hook-ups? Are we opening the door to an additive opportunity for an ego rub? Imagine swiping yes to some wildly attractive person and then finding out they reciprocated! Forget the follow-up, just the acceptance is heady stuff! Will this one dimensional intro allow us to evade the basic relationship question ... what do I have to offer ? Knowing what’s hot and what’s not to you is important in the way any piece of a puzzle is. But what’s hot shouldn’t be confined to just looks. Relationships need heat but it can come from a lot of sources. Connections based on common interests and life goals are just as important as those fab abs!

Living Like the Immortals, Optimizing Our Genetic Fountain of Youth Experts say that the longevity of our children is compromised significantly today (6). We all know people that seem to have an abundance of energy, vitality, and youthfulness. They have an enviable youthfulness about them. They are the lucky people. Or is it simply luck? Let me tell you about a person I know like this. My 89 year old mother raised 20 children; has 60 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Four years ago, she broke her neck walking into a jewelry store. First they said she wouldn’t make it. Then they said, convalescence would be long and she’d live in a nursing home, if she did recover. In less than 9 months she was back! She literally died 3 times during that ordeal, only to be brought back by skilled physicians, and the grace of God. She still lives independently, cooking, cleaning, banking, shopping on her own and working out at Curves 3x/week. Daily she does her hair, puts on her makeup, and dresses up to go to town. She has more black in her hair than many of her children. She is frequently asked if she is one of the older daughters of our clan. She obviously dips regularly into the fountain of youth. Yes, when I grow up, I do want to be like my mother. I use to think that genetics could not be changed or programed. My genetics would roll out in predestined fashion and my only hope in having an extra helping of youthfulness was a 50/50 chance at best. Well check this out, there is hope for all including our children. There is something we can do to optimize our chances of having a long, energetic and fully functioning life including our golden years. In 2009 the Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to 3 scientists for their work and discovery of how chromosomes (cells) are protected against degradation and death through end pieces of DNA called telomeres (pronounced tee-luh-meres) and the enzyme telomerase that forms them.(1). In short, what this discovery means, is that science now knows how to extend life expectancy, how to optimize cell youthing. Some researchers like those who wrote the book, The Immortality Edge, say expectancy can be “beyond 100 years while leading an active, robust, independent lifestyle, with all of the strength and vitality (we) had when (we) were much younger”. (2) Is this the fountain of youth? Immortality? Whatever it is-- I’m in. When cells divide, the ends of those cells called telomeres shorten. The shorter the telomeres become, the more our cells age. The more our cells age, the more vulnerable we become, to the appearance of aging and age related diseases such as, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer (2, 3). Canadian scientist, Dr. Calvin Harley, Chief Scientific Officer at Geron Corp. says, “If we can maintain telomere length or actually increase telomeres, we can in fact increase the life-span of normal cells”.(4) This statement means protection and delay from aging. Ok so how do we keep our telomeres strong and long? Dr. Harley also demonstrates in his talk on TedMed that a huge part of maintaining telomere length, comes back to the basics of lifestyle. 62

According to Maria Blasco PhD “Telomere length is a predictor of the rate of mortality… The longer your telomeres at birth, the longer you are likely to live depending upon your lifestyle. The shorter your telomeres are when you are born, the shorter you are likely to live, depending on your lifestyle.(5) (Well, we know which ones my Mom has.) Lifestyle basics can no longer be ignored. Dr. Gabriel Cousens, a medical doctor and Holistic Physician, founder of The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Arizona, states in his review on telomeres that children today as young as 10 years old have shorter telomeres than previous generations; enough to take 10 years off of their lives(6). He confirms in detail what Dr. Harley and Dr. Blasco touch on, that lifestyle is a huge factor in keeping our cells young, disease free and ensuring long healthy lives not only for ourselves but our children. Yes when I grow up, I do want to be like my mother. I want her vitality and zest for life. I want her genetics. I want to do what I can to impact my genetics and pass this on to my children. I don’t want to just dip into the fountain of youth, I want to swim. Anyone coming? To be continued… 10 Top Lifestyle Principles to Slow Telemere Shortening 1.) Drink 6 – 8 glasses alkaline filtered water daily 2.) More nutrient dense food (vegetables) on your plate 3.) Eat less food 4.) Eat less meat & more plant based food 5.) Say no to alcohol and recreational drugs 6.) Sleep 7 to 9 hours each night 7.) Exercise – Stretching, Interval, Resistance, & Endurance 8.) Nutritional Supplementation 9.) Practice deep breathing 10.) Meditation or prayer References:

Dirty Laundry Vineyard
The “Bordello Club” - Would You Like To Become A Member?
An interesting question coming from a delightful young lady standing across the counter from me sporting a pink feather in her hair and long netted black gloves running from her fingertips up her delicate forearms to her funny bone. This suggestive question was not intended to lure me into the forbidden haunts of a brothel but rather an invitation to join a rather exclusive Wine Club at Dirty Laundry Vineyard located at short distance from Summerland town center. The Winery’s motto “Wine is Fun” suits the loose, comfortable atmosphere created by both the humorous 19th century tale of a Chinese Laundry which fronted for a “house of ill repute” against which the Winery theme has been modeled and the creative detail the owners have employed to bring the story to life in rural Summerland next to the KVR Railway. I got the picture quickly as my hostess introduced several of the Winery’s popular wines with names like “Secret Affair”, “Dangerous Liaison”, “Woo Woo”, “Madams”, “Say Yes” and a delightful Merlot Ice wine called “Hoar Frost”. When my attractive hostess brought forward the Winery’s Syrah appropriately named “Kay Syrah”, the staff at the Winery on cue broke into the 1950’s Doris Day song “Que Sera Sera”. Although not quite Doris Day calibre, the tune was pleasant enough to cause the audience which accompanied me at the wine tasting counter to join in, filling the Wine Shop with song. The energy in the room was directed at insuring that every patron leaves with a smile as big as his purchase. In the midst of all this levity one might get the impression that all of the effort has gone to entertainment rather than to ensure the production of quality wine. Not so! Winemakers Phil Soo and most recently Mason Spinks have created wines that have been recognized at both National and International Competitions over the past 8 years since the new ownership took control of the Winery, including most recently 9 Awards at the Northwest Wine Summit Competition (including Gold for its popular 2013 Secret Affair and its 2013 “Say Yes” Pinot Gris). This was followed by recognition at the 2014 Rocky Mountain Wine Food Festival where Dirty Laundry’s 2012 Madams Gewurztraminer was in competition with 260 other wines and was awarded the Best White Wine in the Northern Hemisphere.

There are many additional reasons why Dirty Laundry Vineyard has been attracting record crowds over the past several years including one of the most delightful patios in the Southern Okanagan and the opportunities to attend events like Roch Fortin’s “Roch’s Lobster Feast” where fresh New Brunswick lobster, airfreighted to the Okanagan Valley and cooked on-site, is served to a very appreciative audience while savoring the beauty of the vineyard, valley and lake views from the vine covered patio. A quick look at the commentary on Trip Advisor about Dirty Laundry, a perennial Certificate of Excellence winner, will seal the deal if you are wondering whether to make Dirty Laundry a “have to” on your next wine tour. bluSAFFRON bistro
at Volcanic Hills Winery, West Kelowna There’s a new Chef in town! In West Kelowna, to be exact. Colin Rayner just recently opened bluSAFFRON bistro at Volcanic Hills Winery on Boucherie Road. A beautifully decorated restaurant, and a huge view patio with room for even your largest events. Word spread fast when people started looking for the ideal combination of delicious food, wine and an amazing view. Before arriving in Canada in 2008 Colin was born and raised in England, where he began his journey at a small culinary college working in restaurants around England and Scotland. He then decided to move to Bermuda to further his career in some of the best resorts and hotels there, eventually staying for 16 years. While there Colin represented Bermuda on the culinary team competing and winning silver in Puerto Rico. Colin has always had a passion for good local food picking up many ideas and recipes from local Chef Colin Rayner farmers and fishermen on the island of Bermuda and now in the bountiful valley. While in Canada Colin opened his first restaurant at Bonitas Winery in Summerland, before deciding to move his business nearer to his home in West Kelowna at the Volcanic Hills Winery. Colin hopes to bring a touch of his International experience combined with everything the west coast has to

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY
Ladies and Gentlemen - it is SUMMER! And with it comes a certain vibe, or lifestyle. We are more relaxed, we slow down a bit. After all, summer means vacation, recreation and relaxation. In keeping with that spirit, we tend to be looking for lively, fresh, easy-to-drink wines. We may want the wine chilled, or pick some refreshing bubbly ...
8th Generation 2012 Integrity 68% Chardonnay / 19% Pinot Gris / 7% Gewürztraminer / 6% Sauvignon Blanc - and some very refreshing bubbles! No wonder this “frizzante wine” just recently won the Bronze medal at Wine Align National Wine Award Canada. Notes of pear and red apple combined with a soft citrus on the nose. The palate explodes with honey, pineapple and more soft exotic fruit. All play nicely together with tiny bubbles and a never ending finish. As this is probably my most versatile wine it always works for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drink it on its own. (Also great as a foundation for the Bellini or Hugo Cocktail). Retail: $23.00
Alc./Vol.: 13.2%

Kismet 2013 Viognier With their 2013 Viognier Kismet Winery have been crafted a wine that performs a perfect balancing act between freshness and richness. The palate is extremely refreshing with vibrant flavors of apricots, peach and orange peel. A line of acidity adds freshness and verve. This white is a quintessential example of Viognier’s varietal characteristics at its best and can be drunk at a young age or will develop well over the next years. As for food pairing: The Viognier is a great “anytime wine” but well suited to Asian cuisine, chicken dishes, grilled seafood, fresh fruit and light cheeses. Retail: $17.99
Alc./Vol.: 14%

Ruby Blues 2013 Gewürztraminer Did you know that this funky boutique winery on the Naramata Bench initially was called Ruby Tuesday (remember ... the Rolling Stones?)? Long story short - a big American restaurant chain by the same name didn’t like it, and so the winery was renamed Ruby Blues. What stayed is their amazing wines. And for the summer, we can highly recommend their Gewürztraminer! Tropical fruit notes with spice lychee and rose petals with a pleasant long fresh finish make this the perfect wine for a hot summer day! Pairs well with soft blue cheeses and spicy Asian dishes, like curry, sweet and sour and more. Retail: $20.00
Alc./Vol.: 12.7%

Black Hills 2013 Alibi A Bordeux-style blend (Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon) the nose on the 2013 Alibi is bright and lifted with grapefruit, pear, green apple and pineapple notes following through with a juicy tropical fruit palate. This wine has great structure, with crisp acidity and rich mouth feel and that gives way to a long, lingering finish. Make sure not to serve it too cold! It is very food friendly and we can recommend it with salads, or an array of seafood. Retail: $24.90 72

Kismet Estate Winery (Oliver)
K
ismet means destiny and good fortune and it seems to be the Kismet of winery owners Sukhwinder and Balwinder Dhaliwal. Having grown grapes for the last 20 years the Dhaliwal family has established themselves as one of the premier grape growers in the valley.
Kismet Winery currently produces five wines:
Their story started with the family immigrating from India in the early 1990’s and establishing themselves in the Okanagan Valley. They purchased their first vineyard property in 1994, where they pulled out an old 5 acre orchard. From that day, the focus of the Dhaliwal family has been to grow top quality grapes. From this first purchase, the family’s holdings have increased to over 200 acres between Oliver and Osoyoos.
Viognier - $17.99 The wine expresses floral, apricot and peach aromas with stone fruit flavours continuing onto the palette with a crisp finish and a slight sweetness from the stone fruit flavours. Sweetness Code: 0 - 1
The motive for the winery came about few years ago when the family wanted to share their level of expertise and love of good quality grapes and wines directly with consumers. Over those years with consultation the family produced their first vintage in 2011. The wines were first available for sale in October of 2013, two red blends and two white wines. Kismet Estate winery uses less than 5 percent of the vineyard holdings total production. The remainder of the grapes being sold to other wineries. The winery has completed another phase in 2014 with the grand opening of their new wineshop on May 17. A huge event earmarked the opening of the new wine shop attracting over 400 people to enjoy the new releases and congratulating the family on this milestone. The wines have a unique and approachable style that is meant to showcase the family’s dedication to high quality grapes and wine, as well as providing the consumer with an everlasting effect their experience.

What We Love About The Okanagan
Insider information is everything! This issue’s ‘top tips’ for all things Okanagan comes from ubermixologist Gerry Jobe. THE OKANAGAN COCKTAIL MOVEMENT Four years ago, you couldn’t get a properly crafted cocktail in this town. Now, we have an army of bartenders crafting classics and originals, with a common theme of “Field to Glass” utilizing “Outside the Bottle” thinking to create ingredients made from our local bounty. This Cocktail Movement is garnering world-wide attention now, and you can’t open a restaurant or bar in the OK without considering how your bar program is going to keep up with the demand for our local cocktail style.
2
THE KELOWNA MUSEUM The Museum is my Fortress of Solitude. I love to go solo, or bring my two young boys here and wander around for hours immersed in our valley’s rich history. I always notice something new in the displays that I have seen a hundred times prior, and I also enjoy booking time in the basement with the archivist to pour through old publications, photographs and even the phonebooks of the past to see how our town has evolved.
3
THE KASUGAI JAPANESE GARDENS An oasis from the stress of daily life, right in the heart of the city. A great place to meditate, lunch, or just watch the Koi fish play…
4 5 6
THE BEAN SCENE COFFEE CO. It’s hard to beat the amazing coffee at the Bean Scene, and this is bolstered by the witty, fun staff, especially at the downtown location where Charlotte, Lucy, Kate and the crew always are sharp with their banter. Also, fun fact: The Bean Scene Horoscope is 100% accurate all the time. LUNCH AT THE SALTED BRICK A hub for local foodies, Chef Jason and the team get it right: simple, clean, affordable eats that cater to the essential joys of food. No attitude or pretention, just meat, cheese, bread, and house-made goods that hit the spot.
MAN+WOMAN CLOTHING Finally a unique clothing store (in the mall of all places) that steers clear of the same 6 brands that dominate every other clothing store in this town. Owners Scott and Erin have done an amazing job at bringing in unique styles to keep the Okanagan looking good.
7
FUNKTIONAL The best place to buy gifts for the people you really, truly adore, and when they receive a gift from Funktional, they understand instantly that you really, truly adore them.
8
LOIS LANE WAREHOUSE You can easily get lost in Lois Lane, and there have been a few times I have considered just staying and moving in. If you can’t find what you are looking for anywhere else, look to Lois. She’s got everything, and she’s awesome. Killer vintage furniture, décor and kitsch.
9
MEDITEREANIAN MARKET SUBS The submarine sandwiches at the Med Market are an Okanagan rite of passage. Finishing one in one sitting is the Okanagan equivalent to the Grouse Grind.
10
FEELING AT HOME AT RICARDOS It’s not about the food, or the cocktails, (which are both out of this world) it’s about the familiar feeling of being welcomed home when you arrive and being treated like family while you’re there.
11
THE RUMPUS ROOM AT FERNANDOS The coolest night ever to take place in the Okanagan. 50’s-80’s break beats, soul and funk, one gigantic packed dance floor, and smiles all around. Bernie hasn’t had one in a while, let’s all make a concerted effort to harass him into getting his groove back.
