PUBLISHER’S LETTER We’ve been ... busy!

We don’t want to give ourselves a pat on the back, but boy did we keep ourselves busy over the last few months. You would think that after the last edition (Fall 2015) was published we would take off and enjoy a little vacation with friends and family, and to be honest, it was actually the plan. But then it happened ... we were sitting in our office, when the sound of what almost sounded like an approaching fighter jet caught our attention. What drove by the building was a group of high end super cars. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens. We later found out that it was a group from Vancouver on an organzied tour through the province. Anyways - Terry and I just looked at each other, then smiled.

We had discussed it before, and now it just felt right. It was time for a new publication. Ladies and Gentlemen ...

ICONIC MOTORING - Defining the Car Culture in the Okanagan Valley

We all know it - this valley is car crazy! Just think about all the car shows that we have, the passion of car enthusiasts building or restoring their dream machine, the wonderful classics and the amazing supercars we see all throughout the summer in and around the cities. Yes, this little valley is not only one of the most beautiful places in the world, it also has some serious culture. Car culture! The time was right to honour the passion that we have for the mighty combustion engine (well, we do like hybrids and electric cars, too!). Iconic Motoring is an annual introducing some of the coolest classic cars, supercars, trucks and hot rods that we have in the Okanagan Valley. Add gearhead gadgets, car movies, a 2016 car guide, articles about collecting cars, detailing your baby, and business profiles ... and you have Iconic Motoring! Best of all - it is free! So go and get your copy at the typical locations, or stop by at The Daily Courier (550 Doyle Ave., Kelowna) and make sure to follow the team on Facebook: www.facebook.com/iconicmotoring

ON THE COVER

We knew we wanted “something food” on the cover, but we had no idea what exactly this could be. So we called “our man”, photographer Christos Sagiorgis (Cvlt Studio), model Tanja, and met at KRAFTY kitchen + bar in Kelowna. It was only an hour into our photo shoot that we realized that Chef Chris Shaften prepared the dish for the restaurant feature right on their stainless steel counter - and just seeing him with his Japanese knife, the food, the kitchen in the background - we knew it was the cover! So there you go - meet Chef Chris Shaften! A big thank you to Christos Sagiorgis - you rocked it, and our apologies to Tanja: You can’t beat a chef with a knife and some gourmet food!

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

Just For The Ladies: WHAT DOES A GENTLEMAN WANT? have had many people ask me about this article and why I always seem to be writing for men. I realized it was true, so this issue is just for the ladies out there. Here is the good news: Instead of the usual “how to meet or please a great girl,” the following is a list of what a great guy might be looking for! Take it or leave it, but if you are dealing with a real man, this will help: Now is your chance to either take that love and care for it like Mr. Miyagi does his bonsai tree, or completely let it slip away. To lose the girl of your dreams, just follow this guide:

Your “thing” - Being driven and passionate is also one of the most appealing things about a great woman. It isn’t necessarily about money, but more about having something that really gives you purpose, and gets you excited when you talk about it. Laugh a little - If you have a good sense of humor and have no problem laughing at yourself, it shows you are confident. We love a girl who can take it as well as give it out! Did you just look at her? - Part of being the “cool” girl is realizing that you can have some trust and confidence in your man. Being jealous and insecure about other girls in his life can make both of you insane. Start with trust, and if he breaks it, by all means go ahead and blow up his car.

Know who you are - We want a girl with confidence. There is nothing sexier than a girl who knows who she is, and is comfortable with it. Don’t pretend you are free of “No matter insecurities (because we all have some), but make sure they aren’t dictating who what a woman you are! As my friend Loyal says, “own it!” looks like, if Your circle - There is nothing sexier than a girl who values her family and friends above all else. You could lose everything in your life, and those are the people who will be there for you. How a girl treats her loved ones is a great insight into how she might treat her man.

she’s confident, she’s sexy.”

Join in – Even though guys like their “bro time,” it is also great to be with a girl who will hang out with the guys, come watch our sports sometimes, and can just hang out. Maybe even drink a beer??

Top Secret - This one is a bonus. We want to know you are thinking about us in “that” way when we aren’t around. - Paris Hilton Without getting too graphic, a sexy text, a subtle picture or a hint of what may be waiting when we get home will drive Turn down the tramp - When you are choosing your a guy crazy… in a good way. outfit, think “classy and sexy.” A gentleman is still a man, and you know he loves what may be under that outfit, but the mystery is the best part. A very wise (I assume French) philosopher named Paris Hilton once said: Sweat pants? - With that being said, another (probably “No matter what a woman looks like, if she’s confident, more important) consideration is how a girl looks when she’s sexy.” she is in “chill” mode. Can you leave the house with no make-up and your hair up? You are beautiful... it’s okay It may be the most intelligent thing she ever said because it is completely true. What we really want is YOU… to relax sometimes! not some made-up version of you that is controlled by insecurities or afraid to be bold. Less of the lush - Most of us like going for a few drinks at our favorite places. Make sure that for you, a “few While we should strive to always be better, make sure drinks” doesn’t mean you are slurring, stumbling, and you love yourself exactly as you are on annoying by the end of the night. We aren’t at a high school keg party anymore. that journey. There is nothing sexier. Have a brain! - Long gone are the days when acting like a valley girl ditz was a great way to get attention. A real man wants a girl with a real opinion, something interesting to say, and who knows at least a bit about what is happening in the world.

Vernon & Kelowna he Hifi Attic has survived the test of time. They started out over 40 years ago as one of the original Kelly’s Electronics Stores in downtown Vernon.

In 1995, a move to the current location on Kalamalka Lake Road was made to better serve the needs of their clientel along with the name change to The Hifi Attic. The Hifi Attic became a destination shop for Okanagan Valley audiophiles, specializing in upscale high performance stereo sound. The Vernon location also evolved to include advanced home theatre systems, and currently has one of the few Dolby Atmos Theatre Rooms in the province. In 2012, Malcolm Rolfsen of Kelowna Custom Sound Ideas, purchased The Hifi Attic adding a complete custom installation, multi room audio video and prewire division to the company. They now offer total new home construction audio video networking solutions as well as commercial installation and service of existing systems. And finally HiFi Attic has opened a 2nd location in Kelowna and we can now offer an alternative to the big box mentality (“Stack ‘em deep, sell ‘em cheap”) price oriented stores to an atmosphere where sound quality, high performance and service are always the main focus. We bring the world’s finest audio components to life at our new Kelowna digs, and welcome you to audition and experience the ultimate in high-fidelity sound. Come Hear the Difference! BRIDGING

BUYER

!vs SELLER THE

B

GAP

Selling your Business

usiness sellers’ confidence is extremely high in today’s commercial business market and for good reason. Despite economic turmoil in North America, most business owners are realizing some excellent earnings. These earnings support their belief that their business is in a sustainable industry and is uniquely recession-proof. When it comes to evaluating the market value of a business, a positive trend in earnings is an important factor; one which should logically increase its value. Interestingly, surveys suggest that buyer confidence is going in the opposite direction! Its slipping and for good reason. Nationally, the fear of the unknown, a befuddling media and a new political landscape which promises tax reform helps create a skeptical business climate. With this, combined with the NEW Liberal government, US Presidential campaign and the dismal economic reports from China and Europe, lenders and investors may understandably be apprehensive. Perhaps they may be justified. On the other hand, this situation also creates some incredible investment opportunities!

!!

by John-Erik Grain

This information suggests a psychological disconnect between Buyer and Seller perception and in such cases it is logical to focus on the things we can control instead of speculative suggestions.

What we do have control over is our thought process as it relates to facts. The facts about what makes a functional, sustainable business have not changed. To produce a profit, a business requires revenue that exceeds the investment in people, finance, marketing, and operations. This profit must be sufficient enough to motivate the business owner. These fundamentals remain constant. Buyers and sellers must both agree on these factors because they are the variables that a business can and must calculate, control, and improve upon. For both the buyer and the seller, there are many considerations at the time of a sale or purchase. Consider the following table.

Sellers

Buyers

Notes

MONEY

Sellers want the most money for their business.

Buyers will pay a reasonable price based on valuation fundamentals.

Pricing your business beyond reasonable value will deter buyers and waste precious time.

LIABILITY

Sellers prefer to be absolved of any liability beyond the sale date.

For Buyers it’s the opposite. They prefer the Seller be liable and involved beyond the sale date to ensure a smooth takeover.

This can take many forms. • Holdback • Proper Transition time

FINANCING

Sellers are often not willing to help finance.

Buyers want the Seller to finance a portion of the goodwill.

Commercial loans are difficult to get especially in the amount a buyer will need to cover goodwill.

TRANSITION

Sellers want to take a 6 month vacation the day after closing.

Buyers demand a long transition period.

In small business, the people are the face of the company and clients trust the face. New faces take time to build trust and the Seller needs to play a role here.

POTENTIAL

Sellers speak of huge potential but can’t make guarantees.

Buyers often want to hold back sales proceeds until some of this potential is realized.

Example: Holdback 10% of the purchase price for 12 months and then adjusted from there if targets aren’t met.

Understanding and agreeing on these major considerations during a business transaction will dramatically increase the chance of deal closing on terms satisfactory to both the buyer and seller. Both parties must be willing to negotiate not only price, but, financing, holdbacks, guarantees, non-compete agreements, transition time, and many other factors. Business Brokers are familiar with this entire process and can not only ensure your transaction completes expeditiously, but, that the Seller and the Buyer are satisfied with the result. Don’t leave your next big business decision up to chance. Consider the risk involved on both sides of the transaction and know what terms you are willing to negotiate on. If you are unsure on any aspect of this transaction, contact a professional, your business broker for clarity and direction. After this pleasant hour of relaxing over great wines grown in Quails’ Gate’s unique terroir, and swapping that day’s fishing stories, you’ll sit down to a remarkable dinner prepared by Chef John, featuring some of Haida Gwaii’s most delectable and memorable menu selections. It’s a terrific match: a fishing lodge committed to a sustainable resource, a vintner deeply committed to sustainable vineyard and winemaking practices. Both protect and enrich our incredible west coast environment. On the last evening, a featured Winemaker’s Dinner is the capstone of the week’s adventure – all the courses and all the wines hand-picked and prepared for our special Okanagan guests by the Lodge’s Chef and Quails’ Gate expert wineculinary pairings staff. And not only do your fish fly home with you, packed for travel, you can pre-order Quails’ Gate wines during your stay (so you don’t forget which ones you fell in love with) and they’ll be waiting for you at the Kelowna airport on your arrival back home. Your accommodations include double occupancy, tastefully appointed guest rooms, private ensuite with shower, and daily housekeeping. You can also enjoy the Lodge’s full service

lounge, outdoor courtyard, pool table, poker tables, shuffleboard, gift shop, hot tub, and registered massage therapist – a great treat after a day on the water reeling in the big ones! All fish caught are filleted, portioned, vacuum packaged and frozen for the return journey, to go with the pre-ordered wine. Custom processing, smoking, and candied salmon can also be ordered for the fisher’s catch and home-delivered by special order. The trip is $3,995 per person, double occupancy, plus GST, conservation fee, energy surcharge and hotel tax. All meals, transportation, unlimited fishing time including five hours of guided fishing per full day in custom-built 18’ boats, packaging of catch and fishing gear are included in the price.

book review that’s all about doing, not being – and while doing will bring you moments of joy, it won’t necessarily reward you with lasting happiness. Stop and breathe. Be healthy. Be around your friends and family. Be there for someone, and let someone be there for you. Be bold. Just be for a minute. If you allow yourself to be in the moment, and appreciate the moment, happiness will follow. I speak from experience. We’ve built a business empire, joined conversations about the future of our planet, attended many memorable parties and met many unforgettable people. And while these things have brought me great joy, it’s the moments that I stopped just to be, rather than do, that have given me true happiness. Why? Because allowing yourself just to be, puts things into perspective. Try it. Be still. Be present.

“Dear Stranger...”

image from virgin.com

by Sir Richard Branson

Dear Stranger, You don’t know me but I hear you are going through a tough time, and I would like to help you. I want to be open and honest with you, and let you know that happiness isn’t something just afforded to a special few. It can be yours, if you take the time to let it grow. It’s OK to be stressed, scared and sad, I certainly have been throughout my 65 years. I’ve confronted my biggest fears time and time again. I’ve cheated death on many adventures, seen loved ones pass away, failed in business, minced my words in front of tough audiences, and had my heart broken. I know I’m fortunate to live an extraordinary life, and that most people would assume my business success, and the wealth that comes with it, have brought me happiness. But they haven’t; in fact it’s the reverse. I am successful, wealthy and connected because I am happy. So many people get caught up in doing what they think will make them happy but, in my opinion, this is where they fail. Happiness is not about doing, it’s about being. In order to be happy, you need to think consciously about it. Don’t forget the to-do list, but remember to write a to-be list too. Kids are often asked: ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ The world expects grandiose aspirations: ‘I want to be a writer, a doctor, the prime minister.’ They’re told: go to school, go to college, get a job, get married, and then you’ll be happy. But

For me, it’s watching the flamingos fly across Necker Island at dusk. It’s holding my new grandchildren’s tiny hands. It’s looking up at the stars and dreaming of seeing them up close one day. It’s listening to my family’s dinner-time debates. It’s the smile on a stranger’s face, the smell of rain, the ripple of a wave, the wind across the sand. It’s the first snow fall of winter, and the last storm of summer. There’s a reason we’re called human beings and not human doings. As human beings we have the ability to think, move and communicate in a heightened way. We can cooperate, understand, reconcile and love, that’s what sets us apart from most other species. Don’t waste your human talents by stressing about nominal things, or that which you cannot change. If you take the time simply to be and appreciate the fruits of life, your stresses will begin to dissolve, and you will be happier. But don’t just seek happiness when you’re down. Happiness shouldn’t be a goal, it should be a habit. Take the focus off doing, and start being every day. Be loving, be grateful, be helpful, and be a spectator to your own thoughts. Allow yourself to be in the moment, and appreciate the moment. Take the focus off everything you think you need to do, and start being I promise you, happiness will follow. Happy regards,

Richard Branson

Dear Stranger is a collection of inspirational, honest and heartfelt letters from authors, bloggers and Mind ambassadors to an imagined stranger. Insightful and uplifting, Dear Stranger is a humbling glimpse into different interpretations of happiness, and how despite sometimes seeming unobtainable happiness can, in the smallest of ways, become and achievable goal. No one should face a mental health problem alone! All profits from the sale of each book will go to Mind.

Darling! How about some new Undies for me?!

B

eing that I’m a retailer this article will definitely sound self serving on one side and on the other hand, you’ll wonder if I’ve missed the point of being a retailer. To be perfectly honest, I’m of two minds when it comes to giving underwear and lingerie as a Christmas or Valentine’s Day gift.

Part of my joy in the season is working with customers who truly bring to life that old adage “It’s the thought that counts!” I love working with men and women who seek to bring home a gift that brings joy and comfort to their special one. Think about it - there is something incredibly practical and useful about underwear; most of us wear it every day. At the same time it offers the gift giver the opportunity to take the gift a little bit beyond what people would sometimes purchase for themselves. I also celebrate couples who use great lingerie to celebrate their love and increase intimacy. Here is where the challenge comes in. Underwear is an intimate garment . Due to the intimate nature of certain items (panties, bras and spicy lingerie), most reputable shops have tight limits on exchanges or returns. So it is important to be aware of the refund/ exchange policy before you purchase. If you want to purchase intimate items for someone else, here are some great tips to keep in mind when shopping:

There is ABSOLUTELY NO STANDARDIZED SIZING in the garment industry. Working with an experienced sales person who knows their products can really help in this area. If you can describe the height, weight and body shape of your special person, they can help you to garments that have a better chance of fitting.

If you are purchasing something you know will be a little bit beyond the “everyday underwear” that your loved one wears; start simply with one item. See how it is received. Better to purchase one item and have it be a hit than a number of items that will be consigned to the “what were you thinking pile”!

Do a wish list! Have your special someone try several garments on ahead of time and ask the store to keep it on file. It is still a surprise gift, however you know everything will fit and be enjoyed.

When in doubt - a gift certificate is always a perfect fit - especially when it comes to lingerie. This option opens up the experience of lingerie shopping together - seriously it can be more fun than you think!

Bottom line: Whatever you are celebrating, make it a season that lifts your spirits!

The Lady

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

A LITTLE LESS SASS ...

I

got married when I was twenty. It seemed like the next step after high school... Get married, buy a house, have a couple of kids... “And they loved happily ever after”...

Not quite. Reality Check. Fast forward past the house, the two kids, and the pending divorce at twenty-seven. Ouch. I take the dissolve of our little family seriously; but as a stereo-typed single mom, I have to admit I only miss my old life every Monday at about 8:15am. Garbage day. There is just nothing classy about dragging that garbage bin to the street in heels! Yes, complicating my kids’ childhood doesn’t make me proud. Yes, letting my family down hurt. But the good news is that it was old news pretty darn quick. Imagine that... Everyone moved on with their lives?! You learn from failure, not from success. So lucky me, I feel as though I have finally graduated from Relationships 101. These days, I come with a little less sass and a lot more lass. Ladies, here are five things I’ve learned from falling on my...

“It’s not about winning… keep the competition light, you’re supposed to be each other’s biggest fan. ”

Assistance Chivalry - it’s sexy. We love it when our guy opens the door for us... There’s something comforting about our man making us feel like a princess. However, there’s also nothing wrong with meeting in the middle and sharing a few of those so-called pink and blue jobs. Learn how to BBQ, hang a picture, take out the garbage. Not only is it empowering, but it keeps things fresh and will impress the heck out of your man! And let’s not forget those little things you can do to show you care… after all, actions speak louder than words, right? Finances I’ve learned the hard way not to buy big-ticket items without discussing them together first. These have been expensive lessons for me… and I should probably add that talking about the definition of what a big-ticket item is and how much it costs is also important. Some surprises are a good idea at the time, but if the CK heels were on the other feet – you’d be upset too (unless of course it sparkles – we can add an amendment for that). Money is one area that needs to be transparent – today, tomorrow and ten+ years from now. The sooner you’re on the same page about finances, the smoother things will be going into the future.

Fighting Fair Let’s face it, every now and then you’re going to have doozy of a fight. These ones don’t happen often, but when they do – your eyes are poufy for two days from shedding so many tears. You’ve already made up, yet your eyes still look like you were stung by a bunch of bees. I have rules. Never go to bed mad (thanks mom), never get in the car and leave, and quite simply - don’t get mean. It’s not about winning… keep the competition light, you’re supposed to be each other’s biggest fan. It’s also okay to take some time to process your thoughts – but this needs to be communicated. The silent treatment is unfair punishment (although I’m guilty of it for sure).

Winter 2015/16

Technology This is a tough one. We depend so heavily on our devices that they can pretty much take the romance out of any situation. And not only that, I want to call my man. I want my man to call me – this thing called the telephone is so foreign now! Pick up the phone instead of sending seventeen texts to decide what to have for dinner. It’s too easy to misconstrue, under appreciate and disregard each other’s texts. Call just to say hello… it’s such an easy way to let him know you’re thinking of him. The point is, don’t let distractions distract you from what’s important.

Respect It ties everything together; loyalty, kindness, understanding, trust… the list goes on. I have learned that if you don’t respect the person you’re with, it will never be a healthy relationship. This doesn’t mean you never screw up, it means you’re able to admit when you made a mistake and you respect each other enough to talk about it and constructively move forward. I believe that as long as I respect my partner, he will always be worth my time and energy. Do you respect your guy? So there you have it, the list of the five things I can fully acknowledge that I didn’t pay attention to or value in the past. Not to come across as condescending, but hopefully to shed some light on how important it is to look at failed relationships as opportunities to learn how to be better the next time.

More than Skin Deep Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics Laser Therapy

When Scott Fader left a successful kinesiology career working with professional and high level athletes, he had been searching for a way to help his clients reduce injuries and recovery time without the use of potentially harmful medications. Fader discovered therapeutic laser technology, which not only safely reduces pain and inflammation, it also treats a wide variety of medical conditions. In the almost 7 years since he launched Healthpoint Laser Clinic, Fader has become widely known and respected for helping over 2,000 patients quit smoking, and for the proprietary therapeutic protocols he has developed to treat addictions, stress and anxiety, weight loss, depression, chronic pain and more. To address motivational and behavioral issues, Fader discovered an effective co-therapy for reprogramming the psychological symptoms: neurotherapy. Working with leading neurotherapist and author Dr. Paul Swingle, Fader has developed combination therapies using laser and neurotherapy to treat addictions, depression, learning disorders, and more, achieving unprecedented results. Fader has been invited to speak at conferences and is a highly sought after laser therapy expert.

Laser Aesthetics

Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics brings an equally innovative menu of treatments to reduce signs of aging, improve skin texture and tightness, body contouring, hair removal and vein therapy. An array of the latest in thermal laser technology is used by certified professionals in combinations specific to each client, bringing lasting, youthful and rejuvenating results. Healthpoint’s signature treatment is a two-hour 3D Facelift that combines three different therapies to lift years off the appearance, and is only available at Healthpoint Laser. We realize that if you don’t feel well, then life can be a living hell! My name is Rodney Warren and I’m the owner of the Gem (Global Empower Movement) Wellness centre, where my vision for great health is spreading like wildfire across the country and across the globe from within.

about what type we are putting into the most complex form of life that exists, being you and me and the human body. I learned that dehydration and highly acidic bodies are the reason behind most sickness and even though most of us are drinking plenty of water, we are still dehydrated and highly acidic. This is mostly due to stress, pollution, and the types of water and foods that we consume.

I was a professional house and automotive painter by trade and although I loved expressing my creative side through painting, I realized that my fate would be much the same as my father who was also a painter, and who lost his life to cancer at the young age of 52.

Chronic cellular dehydration painfully and prematurely kills. Its initial outward manifestations have until now been labeled as diseases of unknown origin. (Book,YOUR BODY’S MANY CRIES FOR WATER F. Batmanghelidj, M.D.) He discovered that the root cause of about 65% of health problems is dehydration and when the dehydration is corrected, many so-called incurable illnesses are greatly improved or cured. A few are asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, arthritis, anxiety, obesity, M.S., cancer, Lupus, etc.

As a local entrepreneur in the Okanagan for many years owning and operating a painting company, I decided that I needed to make a huge shift in my own life, as I too began to become sick and toxic, I just didn’t know what I would do to replace my income, do what I love, save my health and some how avenge my fathers death!?

You need to be informed about what types of water, soft drinks and sports drinks that you are putting into your body and the real effects that they play on your loss of good health, no matter what role you play or occupation that you have...being human you need to take your health back into your own hands and educate yourself.

One day when promoting my business at a trade show a man come to me and began to speak, what he shared got my attention and led me down the path that I am on today, and I would like briefly to share some of the things that I learned along my fairly recent journey!?

We have such an educational, real and live presentation every Friday night at 7-8 p.m. at the Wellness Centre 3670 Hoskins rd. West Kelowna where you are going to have your mind expanded.

The biggest thing that I can share is that not all water is equal, actually its pretty complex, and because the human body is mostly water, we need to be very careful

Moonlight and Mistletoe Winter Concert Laurel Packing House, Kelowna The Okanagan has over 800 people living with MS.

The Okanagan Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada hosted a fundraising concert at the Laurel Packinghouse Nov. 21 called the Moonlight and Mistletoe Winter Concert. It not only featured a photobooth with Santa and silent auction, but the fabulous channeling of Ray Charles by the nine piece “Kenny Blues Boss Wayne” band. His throwback to the golden age of classic rhythm and blues provided the perfect feel to dance the night away in the beautiful ole Laurel. Have a look at Kenny’s tour schedule (kennybluesboss.com) and you will know we are lucky to have him here supporting this great cause annually. abstract art

As an antidote to an often chaotic world I enjoy the process of losing and regaining control of the canvas as I paint. The challenge for me is to create a piece that still has the energy that comes from letting go, but ultimately the balance of form that it needs to work as a great painting.

W

hen Fiona Neal relocated to Kelowna from the UK in 2003 little did she know that this was to be the catalyst that got her creativity flowing again.

Fiona Neal

“I had finished University with a First Class degree in Fine Art. Although painting was my passion, like most artists the necessity to pay the bills threw my career in a different direction.”

It took 10 years working in training roles in Post Secondary education, and a move across the Atlantic Ocean, before a change came for this West Kelowna abstract artist. “I believe two things happened that are important. Firstly, I stopped searching. I knew very quickly this was my forever home. I slowed down and this gave me time to focus on the little things. Secondly, deeply affected by the unique beauty we are surrounded with in this valley, I took time every day to stop, look, and take in the moment. When we do this we start to connect more deeply with ourselves and so I began to listen to my own needs. I was experiencing my life falling into place, but

there was a piece of the puzzle that was still missing. I knew I would find it when I started to create again.” And paint she did, first in her kitchen, and after quickly outgrowing the space, in the converted basement studio of her home. “Once I started I couldn’t stop. Colour and energy poured out of me!” The resulting vibrant abstract paintings that have become her signature have been described as ‘having a unique depth and almost tangible energy that draws the viewer in.’ “I create intuitively to begin with, but I combine that freedom with moments of control that impose structure and balance” The interest in her work has grown rapidly, resulting in rising sales reaching across 3 continents. “Although it excites me that my artwork now hangs in cities like Brazil, London and Winnipeg, my biggest joy is creating for clients closer to home. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Coming here helped me find myself, so it is fitting that many of my pieces have found their forever homes here too!”

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

TURNER-KROUZEL

For 50th Parallel owner and serial entrepreneur Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel, opening a winery was the logical next step after discovering the magic of the Okanagan.

At 50th Parallel Estate Winery, you’ll find some of the Okanagan’s best Pinot Noir, processed and bottled in a 10,000 square foot facility that is also home to a tasting room and event space. The 3,000 square foot Infinity Event Pad offers panoramic views of the valley, while the fermentation tank room doubles as a dining hall. For owner Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel, it’s all part of a philosophy of experience – one that has propelled her through several successful businesses since she was a child.

days later, the other buyer’s financing fell through, so they called us.”

And so, just 72 hours before their wedding day, the couple became winery owners. “I’m a city girl,” says Turner-Krouzel, “but (when it came time to plant the vines) I picked up a shovel. I installed every row of irrigation – 45 acres and counting. Curtis has a background in engineering, so he designed a laser planting machine. He

dreaming,’ and that was fuel for my heart and for the labour of love that this project became.”

“I started my first business when I was 10 years old,” she says. “I had 8 piano students. By the time I turned 18, my sisters and I were teaching 80 students.”

After three or four years of what TurnerKrouzel calls the hardest work of her life, the couple began selling wine. In the early days, the couple hand-sold every case; going from 700 cases in their first year to 2,500 the next. This year, the winery has sold just under 12,000 cases, and has sold out of all but two of their wines. 50th Parallel Winery is just one of many new and successful wineries in Lake Country, a sign of a growing industry that is expanding out beyond the boundaries of Kelowna.

After finishing a degree in commerce and running several successful businesses in Calgary – including a consulting company, a chain of women’s gyms, and an ad agency – Turner-Krouzel turner her attention to the wine industry. “I met (my husband) Curtis on a houseboat in 2000. He said he was going to own an international winery in the Okanagan. I looked at him strangely. We started dating a little while later, and down the road as we built this business plan we thought, ‘Why just do wine? Let’s make this a destination.’” Creating a world-class wine destination, though, would prove easier said than done, and it took many years of sacrifices and work before 50th Parallel came to be. For nearly seven years, Sheri-Lee and Curtis scoured the Okanagan in search of the right property, without success. But then one day, in a serendipitous turn of events, the pair discovered a 62-acre property for sale just across from their cottage on Okanagan Lake. “The property was a treasure – everything we needed was already there. But there was another offer on the property (so we weren’t sure we’d get it). Three

read a lot of grapevine physiology during our first year of marriage.”

“The industry is becoming a lot bigger. Most wineries are up 3 or 4 times over last year. I don’t see the industry as a competitive one – I see it as one of growth and collaboration. If we’re growing, so is everyone else. We work closely with a lot of our peers in the wine industry. That’s key. If we all continue to work together, we’ll get better and stronger.”

When it came time to plant the vines, Turner-Krouzel and her husband relied on their passion for the wine industry to keep them going.

It’s this team-oriented approach – and a strong emphasis on having fun at work that Turner-Krouzel credits for keeping the winery running smoothly.

“You’d get so tired that you’d start giggling. Looking back now, I tell people that when you keep going when your entire body aches and you’re bleeding, too tired to eat, too tired to sleep, that’s passion. And that’s what has fuelled this dream. We didn’t take no for an answer. Growing up, my mom always said, ‘kid, never stop

“The winemaker, the tasting room team, the sales team…I couldn’t do this without them. We’re glamour farmers. With my fitness background, I like to say, ‘alright ladies, we’re going to go work out in the vineyard and detox, and then have lunch and retox!’ We’re serious about business but we’re also serious about fun.”

health|beauty prevent sunlight from harming your skin, starting from a very young age. You may have spent some time, and not a little money, seeking a solution. There certainly is no shortage of products. How best to even out skin tone, conceal or eradicate age-related spots and inconsistencies, and possibly reverse the signs of aging. Is all that even possible? Frankly, yes, it is. Although professional products will assist the skin in its recovery, they are most effective when combined with something stronger and more precise. A laser can do this, zapping away spots in as few as one treatment session. Lumecca by InMode is a new generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a refined, noninvasive technology that improves the skin’s appearance. It is very effective in treating redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, acne, sun and age spots on the face, neck, décolleté, hands and legs. It even works wonders on freckles. Dr. Ben Wiese, Dr. Janna Bentley (Medical Director), and Dr. Lize Wiese

Your Perfect Tan ...

Wasn’t So Perfect After All!

W

hen you were younger, did you and friends spend hours at the beach in pursuit of the perfect tan? Can you recall entire, toasty afternoons basting yourself in baby oil while your skin glistened in the summer sun’s radiance? Might you even have ‘MacGyvered’ together a reflector of cardboard and aluminum foil to bounce the searing light straight into your youthful face? Ulp. Well, what you didn’t suspect then – but surely know now – was that your devoted sun worship would come back to bite you. Indeed, you will likely bear the consequences of these carefree (and SPF-free) days: a little redness on the cheeks, perhaps. Some uneven pigment on your forehead or décolletage. Perhaps liver spots on the hands. And even if you have for years now routinely applied SPF, you still find irregularities in your complexion. But why now? Where on earth did they come from? The truth is this: they’ve been here all along, maybe even before those baby oil-drenched beach days. Your skin is revealing the story of its total exposure to the sun. It’s a story that has lurked beneath your skin’s surface, rising slowly but now visibly as you age. The older you get, the more these reds and browns, the spots and veins, will continue to reveal themselves.

During the treatment, the Lumecca IPL’s pulses of bright light feel like an elastic band snapping lightly on the skin. Something incredible is happening: the light is penetrating the pigmented cells and destroying them without injuring the surrounding skin tissue. Immediately after the treatment, the brown spots and broken capillaries darken or disappear completely. Over the next few days these darker spots are absorbed by the body or flake off – leaving behind revitalized and even-toned skin. It’s the best of both worlds: skin rejuvenation and anti-aging treatment. Indeed, more and more younger clients are using Lumecca as a preventative measure. Why? Because whether or not you have pigment that shows now, it will definitely show later. Don’t berate yourself over your “youthful indiscretions” i.e. willfully baking under the sun. Help is here now for the asking. Book a free consultation at Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic today to learn what a Lumecca IPL – the most advanced medical energy device for skin rejuvenation – can do for you.

Cassini Cellars

Where Passion meets Commitment “I believe that each bottle of wine should communicate something distinct, something unique about the region it comes from. It’s this dedication to craft and subtlety which has quickly made our red and white wines some of the most celebrated on the Golden Mile Bench - the finest grape growing region in Canada nestled in the Okanagan Valley.” Adrian Cassini, Proprietor

t was another award winning year for Cassini Cellars in Oliver, bringing home14 medals, including a double Gold Medla for their 2012 Cabernet Franc and Gold for their 2012 Maximus and Cabernet Sauvignon at the All Canadian Wine Championships, and the Gold Medal at the All Canadian Championships for their 2012 Quattro.

Adrian Cassini came to Canada in 1990 at the age of 30. Working as a restaurant manager in his native Romania, he was searching for a better life. An instinctive entrepreneur, he started by working in a Montreal restaurant and, on the side, selling cars that he bought at auction and repaired himself. He later moved to Vancouver, where he started a successful selling equipment to fitness centres. It was during a vacation that he discovered the Okanagan Valley. Familiar with the wine industry as his family in Romania once owned 18 hectares of grapes, he immediatly fell in love and started looking for a vineyard property. In 2006 Adrian bought a former lavender farm with good highway frontage south of Oliver, established the vineyard and built the 6,500 sq.ft. winery with its tasting room. The rest is history ... Wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs such as John Schreiner describe Cassini wines as “bold and packed with flavour,” and we agree. Just have a look at our The Tasting Note where we review two Cassini wines, or visit Adrian to sample his vinatges. The Cassini wineshop is open for tastings May through October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. And should you want to order some wine: Cassini Cellars now offers free shipping in Canada. EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

When the local weather forecast sounds like a sum-up of “The Day After Tomorrow” ... it’s usually Winter. Those of you who love the outdoors can’t wait for this to happen, for others it just means a warm and cozy fire, and a good glass of wine. Both, the great outdoors and some amazing wine you can easily find here in the Okanagan. But to make it simple and to get you through winter we’ve put together a selection of fuller-bodied red wines that are perfect for fireside conversation and comforting and some bubblies. You want to celebrate the New Year in style, right?

2014 BAILLIE-GROHMAN RÉCOLTE ROUGE

1

GRAY MONK ODYSSEY III PORT Perfect for the cold season: Full bodied, rich and elegant flavours reminiscent of black cherry, raspberry and chocolate. This fortified red wine is equally delicious being served on its own, with Stilton and other blue cheeses or with full-flavoured fruit desserts.

Récolte Rouge (“Red Harvest”) is a rich blend with soft red and black fruit and a long smooth finish. Grown on the BaillieGrohman Estate in Creston and grown exclusively for Baillie-Grohman Estate, the fruit was left to hang for a considerable length of time to ensure the correct level of ripeness was achieved.

“A fortified red style with dried cherry, dried tomato, peppery, cedar, coffee, chocolate aromas. Soft, round, full, moderately sweet style with light tannins. Coffee, chocolate, cherry kirsch, peppery, spicy, cedar, tobacco flavours.” - Tony Gismondi

KRAFTY kitchen + bar Kelowna “Stay KRAFTY my friends!” KRAFTY kitchen + bar is Chef Chris Shaften’s first restaurant. Shafty has been showcasing responsible cuisine in the heart of Kelowna since fall 2014’.

Farm to table is not just the food philosophy at KRAFTY either, it is what motivates every decision. In a world that has over uses words like “organic” and “craft”, KRAFTY screams for authenticity. “It’s not just about making delicious food anymore. It’s about taking responsibility while doing it”, says Shaften. Only ethical proteins, sustainable seafood and seasonal produce dawn the menus at KRAFTY. Monthly menu changes allow for an ever changing experience for locals and tourists alike.

“We had to stop writing house made and local on the menu because it got so redundant. It’s all local, it’s all made in house”, Chris exclaims. The drink is serious business at KRAFTY too. Every server can bartend and every bartender serves. “We designed the service model and the entire beverage offering around Chris’s food. We have to be flexible, and train our team all the time” says General Manager Philippe C. Grandbois. The drinks, the wine and the beer all rotate with the food. Philippe says “The bar is another station in the kitchen for us. We have an endless set of inspirations coming from just behind us”. KRAFTY is not bound by the four walls of the ‘FH & P” building either. Chris and Philippe also operate Taste First Private Dining (www.tastefirst.ca). No matter which way you distill KRAFTY, it’s the kind of place you want to become a regular at. 281 Lawrence Ave, Kelowna (250) 868-7228 kraftykitchen.ca

iconic events! 7th Annual UBCO Global Gala Hotel Eldorado, Kelowna

photography by Neil Slattery Photography (neilslattery.com)

The Global Gala is more than just a formal evening with dinner, entertainment and a silent auction. It is a charity event hosted by a group of University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) nursing students who are passionate about global health. Twelve years ago UBCO nursing students started participating in a global practicum in Ghana, and more recently Zambia. The Global Gala aims to build community capacity regarding global health, increase awareness about the impact nurses have both locally and internationally, and to raise funds for health care initiatives and supplies. The funds raised go towards health initiatives, supporting outreach clinics, and purchasing medical equipment in Ghana and Zambia. Some past initiatives include: health promotion teaching in the community, education on malnutrition, CPR training, a hypertension research study, direct patient care in a hospital setting, and medical supplies. Funding will be divided amongst OkaZKI and students going to Ghana and Zambia. For more information please visit: www.globalgala.net

Yamas- the Greek equivalent of “cheers” in English. If you are looking for authentic Greek food, there’s only one place: Yamas Greek Restaurant on Ellis in Kelowna. Family owned and operated since 1993, Tony Pantazopoluos brought 5 generations of Greek style Mediterranean family recipes, providing authentic Greek cuisine from Prince George 22 years ago. All of their dishes are made in-house from scratch. You have to try their slow roasted lamb, spanakopita, mousaka and traditional souvlaki. Amongst all of their traditional favourites, they also offer pasta, steaks and seafood. And if you like belly dancing, make sure to visit them on a Saturday night - and let the musical rhythms whisk you away with the spirit of the Mediterranean. The last word...

What We Love About The Okanagan

Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to Steve Harvey, CEO of Business Finders Canada, to find out about some of his favorite things about the Okanagan.

1

BNA Bar. When it comes to favorite bars, I quite enjoy going to the BNA. It has great food, fun atmosphere. It’s new, it’s vibrant, it’s busy, it’s hard to beat. People love it. That part of the city has lots of activity these days

2

Okanagan Lake. I love the lake - you can’t beat the lake in the Okanagan. I’m big into surfing, wake boarding. I try and get out there every chance I get. if you can get 10 or 20 minutes away from the bridge either way, north or south, the water’s beautiful, there’s not so much traffic, It’s like a mini vacation every time.

3

Lunch! Being located right downtown there are lots of great restaurants for lunch. You can either catch me at Pho, the Vietnamese place on Water Street, the food is addicting, or the Little Hobo on Lawrence. At one point this past year it was the number one restaurant in BC on Trip Advisor. It’s a tiny place, but has great homemade comfort food.

4 5

Motorcycle Rides. I love riding my Harley around the Valley. This is a great area to ride. Through Vernon, around the lake, Westside Road... It helps you think, focus, forget about life. I grab my wife and throw her on the back - she loves it too. She loves the smells; the water, the fresh air.

6

Sparkling Hill. My wife loves going to Sparkling Hill. The hotel, the spa, all the saunas and rooms you can go to relax, swimming in the pool. You can walk around in your robe, have a cup of tea. Even just going for a walk around there is beautiful.

Christmas Treats from Purdys. Christmas shopping is my wife’s department, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I love going to Purdys at Orchard Park. I love their chocolates, they are my favorites.

Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival. I really like SARB. Different music, so many stages. There are always lots of new, up-and-coming artists. I get to have lots of new experiences with lots of new music.

910

Music. I love the music that comes here. How cool is it to be able to see Aerosmith. To see Steve Tylor walking around downtown playing on the outdoor pianos. Everybody from Nickelback, Kid Rock has performed here. Shania Twain did possibly her last ever performance here in Kelowna. Zipzone Peachland. My family likes doing adventurous things, so we love the Peachland zipline park. It’s exhillerating to shoot across a mountian canyon on a thin wire.

12

Quail’s Gate. Everyone loves the wineries here. I love Quail’s Gate for the restaurant, the winery and the view. I find on a summer night, sitting on the patio looking out at all the vines and the grapes, and out to the water, with the mountain as a backdrop, you could really be anywhere in the world.

713 8

New Year’s Festivities. We do one of two things for New Year’s Eve. Either we have friends and family over to our house to celebrate or we go up to Big White. It’s such a unique place to go for NYE. For us Canadians, New Years is about winter, and at Big White you are in a total winter wonderland.

11

Okanagan Lifestyle. The Okanagan is really known for its lifestyle, it’s a huge playground. And we get the true four seasons. We get a spring, a summer, a fall and a winter. How many places can you go skiing, golfing and surfing all in the same weekend?

Okanagan’s Natural Beauty. The scenery here is so spectacular, you have to see it to believe it. I love the view from a boat on the water looking back over the city. Also, our house is up in the second phase of Wilden, so the view of the Glenmore Valley is spectacular.

14

Floating the Channel in Penticton. How fun is that? Throw out a tube, tie up together with some friends, have a few ‘wobbley pops’. On a nice warm day with the sun shining down on you. Defenitely do it on a sunny day! Some days it takes an hour, sometimes it takes three, depending on how fast the water is flowing.

15

The Minstrel Cafe. My favorite dinner restaurant is the Minstrel Cafe. You have that unbelievable tree, and it has such a homey atmosphere. They have an unbelievable Surf’n’Turf dish with a chimichurri sauce. The flavor just pops - mouthwatering.
