PUBLISHER’S LETTER Finally - the SUN!

If you are a bit like us you must have been in love with March. Not only did we get our longer days back (well, you know what we mean), we were also blessed with many sunny days, some of them with recordbreaking temperatures. A teaser to the Summer! Yes, we are all “solar-powered!” Welcome to the Spring edition of ICON Okanagan magazine. We have been busy finding the newest trends for you, visiting our local businesses, wineries, restaurants. Great news for all foodies out there - Spring always brings new menues to our restaurants, so enjoy some amazing food and pair it with a local vino. That’s how we like it!

Terry Armstrong

Olaf Robrecht

There is a lot going on in the Okanagan right now, new developments, new restaurants, new businesses. With more and more media coverage, especially in the Lower Mainland, our real estate market is strong and prices are on the rise. And although the low Canadian dollar is a headache for some businesses it should also bring more tourists from the U.S. to the valley. There is another great news: Iconic Motoring, our sister magazine introducing the coolest cars in the valley and whatever is new in the automotive world, is a big success. It got so much attention that Victoria and Vancouver Island got their very own edition which will hit the market almost the same time as the Spring edition of ICON. Enjoy Spring, see ya in the Summer!

ON THE COVER

It must be the best job in the world: Weather man! “There is a 30% chance of ...” Where else can you do that? I don’t think you would bring your car in for a brake service if they would tell you that there is a 30% chance the brakes will work. Or try telling your boss there is a 40% chance you will come to work the next day! Anyway ... It wasn’t easy to schedule our cover photo shoot this time. The weather forecast changed daily, and with two models, a vintage car, a whole styling team and a photographer who had to travel, we took some risk. But hey, it worked out! Other than “some” wind we were blessed with the perfect day. Thank you to the great team at MOD Salon, our models Alanna McLeod and McCall Capozzi, LBV Lifestyle (dresses) and of course our star photographer Christos Sagiorgis.

Sandalwood Shaving Soap The Sandalwood Shaving Soap contains sandalwood essential oil for soft, smooth skin and produces a creamy lather for a close, smooth shave. Beard Oil It’s the key to a well-kept beard: Daily grooming and conditioning. Available in three of the designer’s most seductive fragrances. The ladies will love it (for many reasons...).

Old School Razor Set Not only does it look so much more stylish in your bathroom than your multi-blade cartridge, dermatologists actualy recommend to go back to just one blade! Cartridges can actually take off thin layers of your skin ... which leads to skin irritation! So why not give the good old safety razor a shot? And the lady in your life will melt seeing you dabbing the cream on with the brush, and use a safety .. or if you’re bold, a straight razor! Win-win, my friend!

Bluebeard Beard Care “To ease ‘beard itch’ and provide natural, effective products that clean and tame even the wildest of beards” we highly recommend Bluebeards Original products.

Philips Norelco 9700 Wet & Dry This state-of-the-art system cuts hairs up to 30% closer. The shaving heads, with Contour Detect Technology and V-Track Precision blades, move in eight directions to cut up to 20% more hair in a single pass.

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? n a recent conversation with a great friend, we talked about what it is that gets people out of bed every day. What gets you out of bed? For some people it is as simple as getting your ass to work to make some money to support your lifestyle or your family. For others it’s a giant vision of success and fortune. Then there are those who just have to pee. What gets you out of bed is your purpose, and how much you enjoy what happens for the rest of that day represents your passion.

It is amazing! Actual entry from mine: “I just found a dime…BOOM!” We have all been through things that seriously challenged our resolve, but no matter how hard things are for us in any given time in our lives, there is always someone who needs help more than we do.

Gratitude is a feeling and even a state, but the only physical expression of it is generosity. If you are truly grateful, then it is impossible to not want to share what you have. I don’t necessarily mean you have to pay the Tony Robbins said that the majority of people are, to guy pouring dirty water all over your windshield at the some extent, living in a suspended state. He said that red light, but the blessings we have must be shared to those people “aren’t happy, but they aren’t unhappy be meaningful and appreciated. Find a cause, a person, enough to do anything about it.” It was described as or a charity to give some of your time a state of paralysation and complacency. or money to. Even buying a coffee for They are people who don’t have the the person behind you in line is an motivation to change the things that keep “Some people expression of your gratitude, and it will them stagnant, and usually justify it by help create even more joy in your life listing every “reason” possible. “I can’t aren’t happy, while also putting a smile on someone afford it.” “I’m too old.” “I have a family but they else’s face! to support.” “I don’t have time.” The truth is we may only have one life. If you believe in life after this one, then that’s super exciting, but is it worth living this one at 75%? I have to say that one of my pet peeves is people talking about “living each day as if it was your last.”

aren’t unhappy enough to do anything about it.”

I’m sure I have seen that tattooed on someone’s lower back or foot at some point, and that is absolutely not what I’m saying. If it was my last day, I would probably try to get a huge line of credit, rent a jet, and make some seriously bad/fun decisions. What I am talking about is finding a way to live a life that takes you towards happiness today while also being practical and cognisant of what you need tomorrow. I suggest that there are three things that can make that life happen: gratitude, generosity, and passion.

What about your passion? Is it your kids, a hobby or your work? If it is only that cold beer at the end of a week doing a job you can’t stand, you may be selling yourself short. Find something! Passion is the juice…it’s the thing that makes our lives real and full. It’s never too late to find something that really inspires you and brings you joy. Start climbing, do a triathlon, start an online business, coach your kid’s team, or become an international art thief. No matter what it is, it can be the source of so much more fulfillment in your life. It may even help you smack that snooze button one less time in the morning. Nietzsche said “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” So some time in the near future when someone asks you “what are you doing?” here’s to hoping you will be able to say: What I love!

Gratitude is the most important. When life gives us “stuff,” regardless of how horrible, there is always something to be grateful for. It might be your family, your health, or your new turtle, but living your life from a place of gratitude means focusing on the great things. If you are on the green side of the lawn, you are lucky. Be grateful. If you want to really see how lucky you are, consider keeping a small notebook in which you record every single positive thing that happens to you each day.

Y

es, you have heard it before, and yes, we all know - the Okanagan Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Canada if not in the world. If you’ve lived here all your life, you may even take for granted the natural beauty of our area, but many people travel hundreds if not thousands of kilometers to come to this beautiful place ... and some of them come to celebrate their most special day in their lives right here - their wedding day!

There is no doubt, the Okanagan Valley is the perfect place that has it all for your wedding. Regardless if you are looking for a spring wedding, outdoors on one of the first warm days when everything starts to blossom, symbolizing a new beginning, a traditional summer wedding when the Okanagan Valley offers the bluest skies and nice, warm temperatures, an autumn wedding when the colours change and the afternoons and evenings call for a romantic indoor reception, or even the winter months where you can even get married in the snow or on the slopes. Yes, you have found the right place. But ... maybe you have lived here all of your life. And for this special occasion you’re looking for a unique way to say “I do” while surrounded by your closest friends and family members. In this case a destination wedding in a romantic location is ideal. Destination weddings are magical and intimate, but allow an experienced travel agent to help you make your dream wedding a reality. In the end - regardless if you have decided to celebrate in the Okanagan, or somewhere else in the world, just remember what this day is really about - a celebration of love. Here’s to you - the bride and groom!

s one of Hyundai’s all time best- selling models, the new Elantra enters its sixth-generation. Defined by Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille, the front of the Elantra with its available HID headlights with Dynamic Bending Lights and unique vertical LED daytime running lights, gives the car a bold and sporty look. A sleek bodyside character line accentuates a sweeping side window silhouette, giving the Elantra a striking side profile. Available premium features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, all-new LED door handle approach lights, side mirror LED turn signal indicators and LED taillights with high tech graphics add a level of sophistication and detail to this class-above compact sedan. On the inside the Elantra feels more like a midsized sedan, rather than a compact car. It is open with an airy feeling, and a dash that shows a modern driver-oriented layout. Available premium convenience features such as a segment-first integrated memory system for the power driver seat and side mirrors, dual automatic temperature control with auto defogging system and auto-dimming rearview mirror further enhance driving comfort.

The new 2016 WaveRunner VXR and VX Cruiser HO he VX Series has long been among the most popular WaveRunners for Yamaha. We recently had the chance to take the two most popular models out for a spin. And let’s just say we had a blast!

WaveRunner VXR “Improved and refined, that’s the best way to describe the 2016 WaveRunner VXR. “Focused on the essence of what makes performance so much fun” is another. The 2016 VXR is basically the same model, just with some new goodies and improvements. Yamaha uses its proven 1812cc 4-cylinder, 4-stroke high-output engine, leaving off the supercharger and intercooler to further reduce weight and save fuel, ending up with a power machine that gets past 50 km/h in less than 2 seconds. They also included the RiDE system, the world’s first dual handlebar throttle control system that uses a secondary throttle for both reverse and stopping control at speed. them both, or in any combination, and the system reacts with precise control. You have to experience it yourself - It’s a fluid transition where you can rapidly decrease speed and then immediately get back on the throttle with no lag in response. WaveRunner VX Cruiser HO We also had the chance to test-drive the new VX Cruiser HO, the newest addition to the value-packed VX Series. It is powered by the same 1.8L normally-aspirated Yamaha marine engine that the VXR uses, amd comes with No Wake Mode, a cruise assist system that will set a forward cruise speed without having to touch the throttle, and the RiDEdual throttle handlebar controls. There are a lot of other features that make this a premium level watercraft, and we can only encourage you to go and see Kelowna Yamaha and experience the new WaveRunners yourself.

EDGY. EPIC. ENERGETIC. The all-new 2016 242X E-Series

Y

amaha just released its brand-new line of jet-boats, and we were invited by Kelowna Yamaha & Marine to experience the exciting performance wakesport 242X E-Series. It was a fun day! With the colour-matched interior and the ultra wide coverage Bimini, this 12 person (or 1,224 kg) wake boat is a true eye-catcher. Yamaha knows what the buyer expects for their money, so they loaded this boat with a lot of very cool goodies. Have you heard about Yamaha’s triple ballast system? It adds up to 635 kg of additional weight, intuitively controlled through Yamaha’s Connext system. Just dial in the perfect size and shape for the wake and off you go! Another feature of this system is the drive control tab, which allows the driver to set a GPS controlled speed, pick one of four acceleration profiles, adjust the ballast to the exact percentage fill that is desired, and then save all those settings into a profile. Next time you drive the boat, just pick your profile and you’re good to go! It can’t be any simpler, this is as user friendly as it can get.

And yes, almost equally important is the perfect sound system, and Yamaha does not disappoint: A 1000 watt system with 10” subwoofer, 6 cabin speakers, 2 can speakers on the tower - and a tower speaker bar with an additional 10 speakers, is standard. Have a look at the Bimini. Yes, those are two solar panels, providing continuous recharge to the batteries. No more worrying about draining them. We also liked the walkthrough transom with easy access to the swim platform and the two stern seats. Visit Kelowna Yamaha ... and book your test-drive!

10 COMPETITOR PURCHASE ! ! REASONS

by John-Erik Grain

!

TO

A

When our fragile economy slides into a recession it seems to be overnight for some people who awake in the morning feeling hopeless and lost. For those more astute and business savvy, the writing has been on the wall for some time and they have made preparations; often growth plans.

Perhaps there is an easier way? Acquiring your competitors can often help achieve your growth goals much faster and with less effort.

Advantages if my Business Acquires my Competitor 1. CASH FLOW:

From day one your business has immediate cash flow without having to hit the road and sell your wares.

2. STAFF:

Your business instantly acquires trained employees that know the inner workings and nuances associated with the operations. Often times the previous owners will assist you for several months to ensure a seamless transition.

3. MARKET SHARE:

Your business immediately gains a larger market share of established customers that also likely pay their bills.

4. PRICE POWER:

8. HISTORY:

Trends, statistics, and a proven track record will allow your analysts to better predict future revenues and expenses.

9. OVERHEAD CONSOLIDATION:

Combine the efforts and costs associated with certain overhead items like payroll, marketing, human resources, supply chain management, even general management to become more efficient as a whole business.

10. TAXES:

Often times there are income tax benefits.

DIS-Advantages if my Business Acquires my Competitor 1. WHO TO BUY:

Depending on the situation you may acquire the ability to control price points of certain products or services without negatively affecting customer retention; leading to better margins.

Its not easy discovering who is interested in selling their business. You don’t want to offend anyone, but, your local Business Broker often knows who will consider selling.

5. SUPPLY CHAIN:

The entire process is very complicated and you may find that after an exhaustive amount of time, money, and energy put toward making a deal, you simply can’t make it work.

Your business benefits from choosing between supplier discounts of the new business or keeping existing. This is a good time to open up negotiations for even better volume discounts.

6. LOANS/LOCs:

Established credit lines often provide for instant buying power with no need to reapply for credit.

7. BUILDINGS:

Your business will acquire an existing building lease that may be

30

suitable to consolidate both businesses in OR may offer an attractive geographic expansion.

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Spring 2016

2. COMPLEXITY:

3. TIME:

There is no Quick Sale as this process and the transition with new employees and operations takes more time than we think.

4. LIABILITY RISK:

There are many liabilities to consider when acquiring a business. These may include litigations, employee severences/vacation pay, stale inventory, under maintained

assets, and many others just to name a few. Your team of lawyers, accountants and Business Broker will identify these to assist you in negotiations. Acquiring your competition is the surest means for business growth and gaining wealth through efficiencies and economies of scale. Business Brokers are familiar with this entire process and can not only help your transaction complete expeditiously, but, approach your target competitor on your behalf while maintaining complete confidentiality, and ensure that the Seller and the Buyer are satisfied with the result. Don’t leave your next big business decision up to chance. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of acquiring your competitor well in advance with thorough planning and foresight. If you are unsure on any aspect of this transaction, contact your Business Broker for clarity and direction.

The proprietor of 50th Parallel Winery threw an amazing surprise party for his wife Sheri-Lee at the Kelowna Yacht Club. “Old Hollywood Glamour, Red Carpet was the theme for the birthday bash, and so the guests, dressed in formal evening wear of the 1930s, and the birthday girl were welcomed to a Champagne reception by a group of paparazzi. For the actual party one of the banquet rooms was transformed into a magical world of the 1930s by Vintage Origami. A live band from Vancouver, live entertainment and some fabulous food made this an unforgettable evening, not just for Sheri-Lee and Curtis.

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

FOUR THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE THINGS GET SERIOUS… WITH A SINGLE MOM.

D

ating is one thing, dating a single mom is completely different.

A guy dating a single mom is not only dating mom, he’s dating the kids, the dog, the school, the ex-husband, the ex-husband’s new girlfriend… and the list only grows. At first thought that might read as somewhat daunting, and believe me – some days it is. It takes a pretty special guy to embrace the awesomeness and complexity that comes with dating a mom and her kids. Here are few things to keep in mind as you navigate your way into her life…

Pajamas and Popcorn

Go With the Flow Moms have a schedule. Whether it’s on paper or not, trust me, there is a schedule. And the most entertaining thing about the schedule is that it hardly ever works out as scheduled. This is why it’s best to just go with the flow. You’re going to be super stoked for a romantic evening alone with each other and then BOOM, little Johnny gets a fever. Be adaptable and make sure she knows that you’re not disappointed (even though you are). That’s when you step up and head to the store to pick up the Children’s Advil, Ginger Ale and HER favourite magazine. TIP: If you’re feeling awkward about what to do while mom is too busy to pay attention to you… tidy. Do dishes. Anything. You’ll impress her big time!

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

You’re scared. And so is she. She’s worried about what you’ll think of her parenting, she’s worried that her kids could get hurt (again), she’s worried that her kids won’t accept you, she’s worried that you might only think of her as a mom and not as the foxy lady she truly is. She’s lying awake at night worrying about being worried. Let her know that you love her as a sexy momma, even midmeltdown. Reassuring her that you’re okay not being the center of attention 24/7 also helps – we’re spread too thin as it is, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to be with you.

“A guy dating a single mom is not only dating mom, he’s dating the kids, the dog, the school, the exhusband, the exhusband’s new girlfriend…”

No, you’re not going to see us on Plenty of Fish with copious amounts of photos climbing mountains and dancing in stilettos. We have kids… we do kid things, we think of a wild night out and immediately tally up the cost of the babysitter followed up with the not-sofun morning of trying to make pancakes while nursing a hangover and quickly decide that staying home with pajamas and popcorn defines Saturday night perfectly. That doesn’t mean we don’t know how to let loose every now and then, but being okay to tuck up and stay in takes away a lot of pressure.

48

Recognize Reservations

Spring 2016

Take Interest As a parent, kids are our world. Naturally we want to share this with the people closest to us – so when she starts to babble on about little Johnny’s playdate gone wrong or little Stella’s goal in soccer, being interested and engaged in the conversation means more to her than you know. The day you prove to her that you’re committed to not only loving her, but her kids too, I promise you will make her feel safe, confident and unbelievably content to have you as part of the family.

TIP: Brush up on your elementary school math… the kids are bound to need help with homework and this is a great way to melt mom’s heart. To put it simply… embrace the chaos, single moms are worth it. In the end, you get the whole package… which if you ask me, can be a pretty rewarding path in life. Oh and maybe show up with the popcorn, the box in the pantry is probably empty;)

he wood used in the limited edition Mascarenhas “Lignum Vitae” pen is from the shipwreck of the French ship “L’Union,” which sank off the coast of Bermuda in 1763.

“Lignum Vitae” is Latin for “wood of life.” Found in the Caribbean islands and South America, it is the hardest, heaviest, and most closegrained wood known. Its density almost equals that of iron and in some parts of the world it therefore referred to as ironwood. Mervin Mascarenhas’s handcrafted pens are not just unique, they use some of the rarest woods in the world. Take the Juniperus Bermudiana, a cedar tree indigenous to Bermuda: Attacked by parasites in the 1940s, 90% of the original cedars died, making them a rare treasure and hard to find. The wood used in his Canal Zapatero line is more than 400 years old and derives from the “lost forest of Panama,” a perfectly preserved underwater jungle. The oldest wood in the Mascarenhas collection is 5,400-year-old Ukrainian Bog Oak which has been lying at the bottom of rivers at the depth of 3 to 7 metres. Devoid of oxygen, the oak acquires unique physical properties: firmness, longitivtiy and a unique dark black and charcoal colour with rays and flecks. Some of these unique pens come in an elegant chest box, made out of the same wood as the pens. www.mascarenhasluxurycreations.com mervin@mascarenhasluxurycreations.com

Dave

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

by Rick Maddison

McAnerney President & CEO SunRype Products Ltd.

R: Full name and your position. D: Dave McAnerney, President and CEO of SunRype. R: How would you describe your management style? D: I would say highly collaborative. I work hard at building a shared vision and what the company is doing, going forward. I recognize that an important part of the CEO is to find ways to simplify the business. I would say that I lead with a lot of passion for what we do and I’m incredibly proud to be part of SunRype. It’s an amazing company. R: The Big Surf/Rider Cider partnership is innovative. Can you touch on how it came into being? D: Well, we found that all of the big alcohol companies were coming to us saying can we get apple juice because we want to get into [making] cider, so it was clear to us that category was really exploding. I actually have 18 years of experience with Labatt as a brewmaster, and we have several ex-brewmasters from Labatt’s working here. So, we know a thing or two about fermentation and combining that knowledge with flavor development, particularly with fruit, so we should be able to be very competitive in this category. What we didn’t have was selling capabilities into that channel or equipment for fermentation, but we certainly have a mindset that partnerships can be a wonderful way to get into new and exciting growing categories. Dan Allan and I have worked together at Western Canada when I was at Labatt’s and I’ve known Dan for a long time. We met at an airport, both heading out to Vancouver and I explained to him that I had been thinking a lot about ciders and he said, “Me, too.” I said we should get together and talk about it and low and be-

hold we got on the airplane and we were sitting beside each other, so we talked about it the whole way down and we figured out that we each had complementary strengths. I have great admiration for entrepreneurs, and I think it’s amazing what Dan has built and I think they make great beer. So, we trust Dan and the team at Big Surf and it’s been a great partnership.

“We certainly have a mindset that partnerships can be a wonderful way to get into new and exciting growing categories.” R: Talk about the impact of SunRype on Kelowna. D: We have 300 employees, full-time employees which obviously has a huge impact on the community. It’s shocking the tenure we have here. So, when I talk about proud to be part of this organization, I think of an organization that has a lot of pride in their company and long tenure employees. R: Most difficult aspect of your job? D: Probably the most difficult aspect of my job is making choices on where we head next. And, I’ve heard it said that strategy is less about what you’re going to do and more about what you’re not going to do.

Spring 2016

R: Who is someone that you admire in business? D: Jim Pattison. I’m working for Canada’s Warren Buffett and it’s amazing to understand how he thinks and to see how he so effectively built a company with over eightbillion in sales. Starting with selling used cars from the front of his house. And, what’s really inspirational about Jimmy is seeing how one of his greatest strengths is motivating people, and inspiring them to do more than they ever dreamt they were capable of. R: Is there any countries that surprise you with their appetite for SunRype? D: Absolutely. China. We’re learning that China has had concerns with food safety and they have had significant faith and interest in not only North American, but specifically Canadian-based products. The other thing that we’ve learned in China is that a significant amount of groceries are sold online and delivered directly to people’s homes. R: Back to you, Dave. What would be surprising to know about you? D: I think people would be very surprised to know I was a serious curler. I was actually a world champion junior curler. But, it’s funny because right now I’m sort of into more of the outside sports that we feature on the Rider Cider brand. I’m absolutely passionate about living in British Columbia. I grew up in Ontario and all I ever wanted was to be in the mountains, so to have what we have here is outstanding. I don’t think anyone likes playing in the mountains more than I do, and it’s kind of ironic that I grew up in a curling rink in Ontario.

Varicose Veins: Solved! Age: Tissue loses elasticity as we age, resulting in weakened vein walls and valves. Obesity: A substantial weight gain can increase blood pressure and stress on vein walls. The good news is that you don’t need to live with them, and vein removal under general anesthesia is no longer the only treatment option. Today, non-invasive techniques used to reduce or eliminate spider and varicose veins include a revolutionary new laser treatment called EndoVenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) and sclerotherapy, a procedure involving the injection of a solution that causes veins to collapse from view.

Dr. Janna Bentley (Medical Director)

Women often ask “Why me?” when it comes to their spider or varicose veins. These annoyances are not only unappealing to look at, but can cause significant pain and can seriously impact your quality of life. Millions are bothered by varicose and spider veins – a condition that affects up to 25% of all women and 18% of all men. The condition is the result of vein reflux disease, a disorder that causes varicose veins (large grapelike veins that bulge below the skin’s surface) and spider veins (clusters of veins that resemble a spider web). It occurs when the valve on the vein meant to prevent blood from flowing backwards as it travels to the heart malfunctions, allowing blood to pool and enlarge the vein rather than flow freely. Some people are more likely than others to develop varicose veins or spider veins. Risk factors to be aware of include: Heredity: If your mother or father had varicose or spider veins, then chances are good you will develop them too. Prolonged Standing: Gravity affects the volume and pressure of blood in the lower limbs. Gender: Women are more likely to develop vein reflux disease, partly as a result of the affect female hormones have on the structure of vein walls. Pregnancy: The elevated hormones are the most important factor in pregnancy leading to a worsening of venous disease. The increase in blood volume during pregnancy can place extra pressure and stress on the walls of the vein as well.

Both procedures have proven successful in helping patients like you live a life free of varicose and spider veins. How does sclerotherapy work? Sclerotherapy is the solution for smaller varicose veins. Medication is injected into diseased veins with small needles. The medication irritates and destroys the inner lining of the vein so that it can no longer carry blood. The vein then collapses and the body replaces this damaged vessel with an imperceptible scar tissue. By eliminating this abnormal, unnecessary blood vessel, your circulation is actually improved. The thousands of other healthy veins in the leg will take over the job of carrying the blood to the heart. (Contrary to popular expectations, skin lasers are typically not the best way to treat spider veins, despite using them effectively for many other skin issues.) How does EVLT work? EVLT, our recommended solution for larger varicosed leg veins. It is a quick, minimally invasive laser process that leaves no scars, has minimal postoperative pain and a quick recovery period, and provides almost immediate relief from symptoms. It is performed in our Accredited Medical Facility under local anesthesia and works by using an ultrasound-led laser probe to effectively damage and shrink the walls of the vein so that blood can no longer flow through it. For a safe and private assessment of your varicose veins, consult an expert medical doctor at Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic. You may get for a referral from your GP, or choose to pay a consult fee. One of the most satisfying things for us is to get rid of varicose veins… and hear patient say: “Thanks, I can wear shorts again!”

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

Spring has definitely sprung in the Okanagan. The sun is back, the temperatures are constantly going up. It’s the psychological turning point that makes us fancy different food and wines from what you’ve enjoyed for the last six months. But what wines to choose to accompany the seasonal switch? We usually recommend light reds and crisp, dry whites. Young wines with plenty of acidity. Fresh-tasting wines, in other words. So tune your drinking to the flavours of Spring ... and here’s our recommendation on ‘what to drink in Spring!’ ...

2014 INTRIGUE PINOT GRIS

2014 TIGHTROPE TIP-TOE

The grapes for this Pinot Gris were grown in three vineyards, one in East Kelowna, the second is on a West facing slope in Oyama and at the Davis Vineyard right beside the Intrigue wine shop.

This award-winning wine is a blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay, sourced from three different vineyards. All of the grapes were handpicked, whole cluster pressed and fermented separately. The result is a vibrant nose with aromas of perfume, rose petal and lychee. On the palate there is mandarin, pear, banana and citrus, concluding with a long, refreshing finish.

A very hot summer allowed the fruit to ripen with fantastic flavours of kiwi, lime and pear. Elegant grapefruit and honey aromas combine to create a full bodied wine balanced with a crisp acidity Try with Butter Seared Scallops. $16.90 Alc./Vol.: 12.7%

Bacaro, Kelowna & Xchange, Kelowna Feb. 20th

It was a little bit of Hollywood glamour that Pamela Anderson brought to Kelowna in February. Arriving in-style in two Lamborghinis, provided by August Luxury Motorcars, a crowd of people welcomed the former Baywatch star to the city. The Canadian actress and model made a special appearance at BACARO, where she was signing copies of her new book “RAW”, a photo and prose book featuring her original writings, and behind-the-scenes photos from photographer and friend Emma Dunlavey, who joined her on this Okanagan visit. Later the same evening Pamela Anderson and Emma Dunlavey socialized at the opening of the new “Xchange Tapas Bar & Restaurant”, beside the Landmark 6 tower.

What We Love About The Okanagan

Kelowna Yacht Club: The new downtown yacht club is a great facility. Last year I spent 44 nights on my boat. From the location we can walk or bike everywhere, or hike Knox Mountain. It’s like RV camping on water.

Norcino: Luigi Cocorro’s new bar, Norcino, is wonderful. It’s only open Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 1am, but you can go after work, or late night. It’s like a speakeasy, you have to be escorted in and it feels really private, really exclusive. The ‘Thorogood’ at RauDZ: My wife Kim and I love to go in and sit at the bar at Rod’s, and I always order this cocktail. It was invented by Mika, who is one of the top bartenders in Western Canada. It’s based on the George Thorogood song – ‘One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer’, and it’s served with an oaked ice orb.

BNA Brewing Company: for atmosphere you can’t beat BNA. There is such a great mix of people – those in their 40s and 50s, younger people, all getting along. And the Bocci Ball Lane upstairs is a great idea.

Golf: the golf in the Okanagan is fantastic. My parents are avid golfers and they live at Gallagher’s, which is an amazing golf course. On the west side, Two Eagles is great for beginners. They also have a golf academy for kids after school.

Breakfast at the ‘Bo’: In the summer nothing can beat having breakfast at the Bohemian Café on Bernard. I’ve been going there for years, and the Eggs Benedict is amazing.

The Ellis Corridor: There has been such great development along the Ellis corridor downtown. There are so many great restaurants and bars there now - La Bussola, The Curious, Norcino, BNA. It’s a great place to explore.

The Okanagan ‘Triple Play’: because of our climate you can head up to Big White and catch the first few runs of the day, then head back down to Kelowna and play 9 holes of golf, and then finish up the day on your boat.

Kelowna General Hospital: I’m a big supporter of the KGH foundation. We are now getting some top class practitioners here; just look at the new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre.

Wine: Kim and I love to spend the day wine touring the Black Hills. The whole tasting experience at Dirty Laundry is great – we take a lot of people there. I’m a big fan of Quail’s Gate and my #1 favorite is La Frenz in Naramata. We take cooking classes at Mission Hill, and also love their concert series. I take my staff to the Vanilla Pod Restaurant at Poplar Grave at Christmas – all 56 of us. The Spring and Fall Wine Festivals are also always a riot.

The Arts and Cultural District: this area of downtown has really grown and developed; Prospera Place, the RAC, the arts and theatre community. I thought the downtown pianos last summer were wonderful. I especially love the Sugar Skull Strut at the RAC in Oct. It’s like a mini Mardi Gras.

9

Rockets’ Season Tickets: We are big Rockets supporters, and with season tickets we also have access to all the concerts as well. We’ve seen Elton John, Josh Grobin, all the big names that have been in town.

Wine List at La Bussola: Luigi has the best wine list in town. It comes on an i-Pad, and it can compete with anywhere, not just the Okanagan.

Fried Chicken and Waffles at the Curious Cafe: You have to try this! It’s fried freerange chicken coated in chickpea flour, sweet potato waffle, sauce piquante, southern gravy, scallions, maple syrup. I took my dad there not that long ago, and it has a really great, eclectic menu. They also do great pizza before the hockey games.

Raising Kids in the Okanagan: They really have the best of both worlds. There is so much family stuff in this valley, great organized sports, good education… and UBCO is becoming a great educational facility.
