PUBLISHER’S LETTER It is getting cozy... Yes, fall has arrived, and some of us may still wonder what has happened to the summer, right? I guess we have been so spoiled with long dry summers that a few rainy days really put us off. But at the time we are writing these lines we still have temperatures in the mid 20s and it all looks like a beautiful and sunny fall. So let’s not complain - we had an amazing summer! We have visited many festivals and concerts, enjoyed the lake, the company of our friends and families, and tried to get the best out of each and every day. Terry Armstrong Olaf Robrecht Now that the days are getting shorter a lot of us enjoy the comfort of our homes again. Maybe we are looking into some renovation projects, or simply take the time again to read a good book or have friends over for a nice dinner. There is still a lot going on in the Okanagan, from concerts to festivals and organized dinner parties, and mind you, in just a few weeks we will be shopping for Christmas and will get our winter gear ready.

We hope you enjoy this edition of your favourite magazine. From fashion to automotive, from home decor to fine dining, travel tips and local business profiles, we have covered it all. Enjoy the fall, and see you around!

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

ARE YOU THE “SUPERIOR MAN?” “This dance where one is only the best parts of both the push over and the macho man is the art of being a man.” We exist in a time when the definition of “being a man” is as confused and fluid as ever. The roles of men and their dynamic nature in the arenas of business, relationships, sex, and parenting are nothing short of wide- ranging. We are “macho” type men, sensitive “nice-guy” men and everyone in between. I read a book a few months ago that absolutely clarified the interactions of these types of men in relationships and society in general. As the quintessential sensitive, doting, nice guy, I was moved by the explanation of why men like me, or men who are essentially the opposite, have not actually been true to what being a “superior man” really is. I was raised a gentleman. For these types of men, often the goal is to be chivalrous, attentive, and available all the time. The “nice guy.” This is the guy most women say they want, and even the guy most women think they want. The problem is when they get him, they lose the passion and interest relatively quickly. The man who is the opposite runs into the same fate when his woman decides he is too insensitive, inattentive, aloof, and even controlling. The feminine needs the masculine, but only if steeped in unwavering Love. In his book “The Way of The Superior Man,” David Deida describes what a man at his best truly is.

“The newly evolving man is not a scared bully, posturing like some King Kong in charge of the universe. Nor is he a new age wimp, all spineless, smiley and starryeyed. He has embraced both his inner masculine and feminine, and he no longer holds onto either of them. He doesn’t need to be right all the time, nor does he always need to be safe, cooperative and sharing like an androgynous Mr. Nice guy. He simply lives from his deepest core, fearlessly giving his gifts, feeling through the fleeting moment into the openness of existence, totally committed to magnifying Love.”

While not being afraid to say what he believes to be the essence of being a man, Deida describes a man who is unapologetically sure of himself, committed 100% to his deeper purpose (above everything else…including his relationship), while also loving his partner in the deepest and most present way possible.

14

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Fall 2016

This superior Man, has all the attributes of the “nice guy,” but it comes from a place where he is never compromising his deeper purpose just to please a woman. He is strong, confident, and decisive while being completely present and nurturing when he is with his partner. She will feel protected and safe, but also heard and accepted for who she is. This dance where one is only the best parts of both the push over and the macho man is the art of being a man. Those who succeed at creating fulfilling relationships are the ones who recognize where they fall on that scale, and recognize where their woman falls as well. Being balanced is the way to achieve success. When you fall in to your masculine energy, you allow the woman to relax and fall in to her feminine. She will test you. She will expose you to the waves and turbulence of the female energy in an effort to make sure you are strong and committed. Meeting those tests with laughter and love is how the superior man maintains balance. It isn’t though solving the problem at hand or steering towards a specific outcome. The feminine wants to see the masculine remain steadfast and strong in the face of chaos. That is the test…and it might happen a lot! The perspectives one can gain by feeling into Deida’s definition of the masculine can be invaluable. That confident vulnerability will bring success in all relationships…including the one you have with yourself!

Okanagan Dream Rally INSPIRE. CHANGE A LIFE. REPEAT.

housands of people lined the streets of Kelowna Sunday morning as more than 100 sports and luxury cars departed for Penticton as part of the Okanagan Dream Rally. The event raised $134,500 for the Central Okanagan Hospice Association. Each car had a sponsor, and a wrap-up party following the rally at August Luxury Motorcars included a live and silent auction as further fundraisers.

Each car had a child co-pilot, including children who had lost a loved one, had a disability or were fighting cancer. The cars were escorted out of Kelowna by a fire truck and escorted in and out of Penticton by a police car. In Penticton, the volunteer drivers and their co-pilots shared lunch, enjoyed some entertainment and had a show and shine before heading back to Kelowna. The money raised from the event will be used to support the no-charge services offered by the hospice association, including volunteer training and bereavement services. “We envision a community where no one has to die or grieve alone,” said Nica Graziotto, associate director of events for the hospice association. “Wherever there is a need, we are there.” Matt August, owner of August Luxury Motorcars and rally organizer, was pleased with the response to the inaugural rally. August became involved with the hospice association after his uncle Gary died of brain cancer at Hospice House. He is so passionate about their work, he now sits on the hospice association’s board of directors.

August noted the cool part about being in the rally was not breaking any speed records, but the camaraderie. The cars travelled together, and the kids waved at one another and took photos. “My favourite part of the day was watching all the drivers having lunch with their co-pilots,” said August. “They’re sitting on the ground with them, talking to them, eating with them. It was absolutely amazing to see the connection.” Jordan Janacki, 13, was in the lead car, a black Ferrari driven by Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran. Janacki, who has undergone 13 surgeries at BC Children’s Hospital because of a bone disorder, said he

Life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, let’s show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile. We are only on the earth a short time, help give a thousand smiles to a child that needs it. - Matt August, Co-Founder August Family Foundation

loves everything about sports cars. Apart from riding in a Ferrari with the mayor, Janacki said his favourite part of the day was crossing the William R. Bennett Bridge, which was lined with people waving to the drivers and their co-pilots. Max Reiter, 9, got to ride in a Lotus that he said sometimes roared and sometimes purred. For Paul Neider, who volunteered to drive his Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, seeing the kids’ excitement made him feel like a kid again. “My co-pilot knew every car, every spec on every car,” he said. “He was awesome. He knew everything.” Neider said it was amazing to take kids who are going through a tough time out of their reality for a day and just have a dream day. August was surprised to see people at the side of the highway cheering the cars on almost all the way into Penticton. “I cannot wait until next year when it’s a wall of people all the way to where we’re going,” he said.

Adonie and Lydia wanted to win the lottery so they could save endangered animals, help orphaned children, build wells for clean water and make a difference for other kids around the world. But, when they didn’t win, they were sad. Until Mom said they didn’t have to win, to give!

2 kids, 12 countries, in 12 months, hoping to raise $1million for charity.

JUST GIVE. TODAY. Adonie, age 11 and his sister Lydia, age 8 have decided to make a difference on this planet. They believe that despite being kids, they CAN help those in need. Their dream is big…to travel to 12 countries in 12 months and give away 1 million dollars to local charities. They want to make sure the money they raise is going directly to those that need it, and the only way to do that is to deliver it themselves. This September they will embark on a 12 month journey of GIVING. They know you do not have to get to give, and everyone can give without getting something in return. They hope to inspire a global movement and encourage a new generation of heartfelt giving by teaching other children that they too can JUST GIVE. “Giving is from the heart and if we all gave we would all have what we need”. - Lydia age 8. Using social media, they intend to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Periscope, Zoom and Live Stream into the hearts and minds of other children, in both the classroom and at home. Their goal is to show these children that giving does make a difference in the lives of those who are suffering. They want to let donors journey with them and see exactly where their money is going. Their journey will begin with a 12 city tour across Canada, raising money and awareness that giving can change the planet and heal the suffering. Their goal is to inspire 7000 people to donate $12.12/month for 12 months so they can give to 34 charities around the world. WINTERIZE YOUR VEHICLE Get Your Car Winter Ready ...

As fall gradually gives way to winter, vehicle owners often sigh at the thought of driving in winter weather or spending weekday mornings clearing their cars of ice before heading to the office. But manning the wheel through another snowstorm or whittling away another night’s worth of ice from a car’s windshield are not the only rites of passage motorists must endure. Winterizing a vehicle can improve vehicle performance during a time of year that can be especially harsh on automobiles. Low temperatures make for less than ideal conditions for engines to run, while potholes can damage a vehicle’s wheels and may even result in flat tires and a damaged suspension system. Short of moving to a locale with mild winters, there’s little drivers can do to protect their vehicles from harsh winter weather. But winterizing a vehicle can prevent some of the more common issues drivers may encounter when the temperatures dip below freezing. Take time out for your tires. Winter weather can limit traction, putting the safety of drivers and their passengers in jeopardy. When possible, avoid driving in the snow, and steer clear of roads where ice and black ice are known to form. While such measures can greatly reduce your risk of being in an accident, you likely can’t avoid driving entirely come the winter. If you want to improve traction from the tires use winter tires. They can more effectively handle roads that are covered in snow and ice than all-season tires. Another way to improve traction during the winter months is to constantly monitor tire pressure, which decreases more rapidly when the weather is cold. Properly inflated tires provide better traction and protect against damage that may occur when driving over potholes. Consider a low-viscosity oil in the winter. The owner’s manual of your vehicle may recommend you use a lower viscosity motor oil to counter the dip in temperature that’s synonymous with winter. When the temperatures outside fall, the oil inside your vehicle thickens, and a thicker oil won’t circulate through the engine as well.

884 McCurdy Place Kelowna BC 250.860.0041 www.cicustoms.ca

A low-viscosity oil is naturally thinner, so it may improve lubrication throughout the winter. Talk to your mechanic about changing from the oil you use throughout the year to a low-viscosity alternative during the winter. Inspect your vehicle before winter arrives. No one wants to be out on the road during the first snow of the year only to discover certain components are not working properly. Belts and hoses can be put through strenuous conditions during the winter months, so a close inspection of belts and hoses should be conducted in late fall. In addition, windshield wipers are especially important in winter, when snowfall can drastically impact visibility. You will want your wipers working at full capacity once the winter begins, so replace older wipers (shelf life for wipers is typically one year) and use a de-icing windshield washer fluid to maximize visibility. Another component that must be inspected is your car’s battery. In cold weather, a dead battery can threaten your health if you find yourself stranded in cold weather. Especially low temperatures can compromise a battery’s power by as much as 50 percent, so have your battery inspected in late fall and replace it if need be. Don’t be caught off guard, be prepared if the vehicle breaks down. Make sure you have extra washer fluid in your trunk, and don’t forget to include an ice scraper, snow brush or even a snow shovel as well. Other items to carry include a blanket, a hat, a pair of gloves, some nonperishable food, and a few bottles of water. Winter can be especially harsh on automobiles, but you can take several preventive steps to ensure your vehicle is safe and sound on the roads this winter.

Kelly Mouillierat

CiC Canadian Image Customs

Automotive entrepreneur Kelly Mouillierat started a business around his passion – but grew it through his resolve. If there’s one thing that Kelly Mouillierat has learned in his 10 years in business, it’s that you’re always either two steps ahead of the competition or two steps behind. Mouillierat and his team at Canadian Image Customs work hard to differentiate themselves, which isn’t easy in a competitive market such as the automotive industry. Says Mouillierat: “We try to separate ourselves from the competition by offering products or services that nobody else does – like suspension lifts for local dealerships. We’d go to the dealership, pick up the car, customize it, and then drop it off. Nobody else was doing that at the time.” Mouillierat says that his commitment to his auto shop was born out of a need to have a fulfilling career – and thanks to his past experience working with his father, he knew he’d find it in automotive industry work. “I’ve been around cars my whole life. I was my dad’s right-hand man in the body shop business. I spent 10 years working for the fire department and in a tire & service shop, and I had to make a choice as to whether I wanted to continue as a fireman or do my own thing. I started CIC with a small line of credit, and 10 years later, we’re still in business.” Mouillierat learned the mechanical side of the business from business partner Gerry Checkley, with whom he operates an OK Tire franchise for several years now. And while CIC experienced early success, Mouillierat was forced to pivot when demand for customizing trucks started to wane. CIC cautiously ventured into diesel engine service on pickups and service for European cars, and today, the business owes its recent success to that decision to specialize. Mouillierat says that starting a business is a risk, and that it’s important for young entrepreneurs to chase their dreams, have faith in themselves and the community around them. “Roll the dice, take a chance – don’t ever live with regrets.” Fall 2016

Amanda Westrheim

The Westrheim Group Real estate agent Amanda Westrheim says that success in business depends on successfully managing the tension between work and personal obligations. Century 21 realtor Amanda Westrheim got her start in real estate early on in life. “I was six years old when I knew that I wanted to be a real estate agent. My parents don’t know where that came from, but my mom remembers me showing people around our house. When I was Trickor-Treating, I was always more interested in the house than the candy.” Westrheim first started looking for a role in the industry in grade 11. But despite her obvious passion for home showings, Westrheim wouldn’t be eligible to apply for a real estate agent’s license for another two years. Instead of waiting, she decided to learn the industry by working as an assistant to one of Kelowna’s top real estate teams. And before finishing high school, she’d already learned the industry’s nuances. “You need a lot of capital, and you need to be older if you want people to trust you with the biggest purchase of their lives,” says Westrheim. “That’s why I worked as an assistant until I got licensed.” Westrheim says that the real estate industry is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are passionate about selling homes, the sacrifices are well worth the rewards. “The hours are the biggest challenge. I work 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s tough on relationships, and you’re a slave to your cell phone. You’re always ‘on’. I haven’t taken a vacation since I started – the minute you leave, you lose momentum.” Westrheim says that the demanding nature of the industry has prompted her to create a team, which will be her next endeavour. “I plan to grow the team significantly – eventually, I’d like to become the most recognized name in Okanagan real estate.”

Andy Roffel

MIC Mirror Image Customs

Mirror Image Customs owner Andy Roffel has turned his passion for cars into a booming business by supplying “car guys” like himself with premium auto customization services. Pentictonite Andy Roffel’s first venture into business involved a simple, handapplied clear paint coat for protecting and renewing luxury cars’ paint jobs. And as soon as he saw that product, he knew that full-scale auto customization was the industry for him. “I was working in a stereo shop in Fort McMurray when a man walked up and showed me a sample of X-Kote, and it branched off from there.” So when Roffel moved to Kelowna, starting an auto customization business was the obvious path. Roffel expanded the customization shop’s services into vehicle wraps and window tinting, offering services such as Plasti-Dip application and paint protection. And now, he says that the shop is well positioned for further growth. “I’d like to see us go to the next level of customization,” he says. “Full interiors, full paint jobs, custom work. We wan to be a one-stop shop for vehicle customization, whether it be retrofit headlights or seat upholstery.” Roffel says that growing MIC to its current state wasn’t easy, and that his responsibilities as owner keep him working 18 hours a day. But for Roffel, the satisfaction that entrepreneurship brings is well worth the long hours. “Doing what you love makes it not so much a job as a passion. And if you work hard, you’ll achieve what you want.” And while Roffel works hard, he’s still committed to having time for a personal life. He frequents car meets in his spare time – most recently, RevScene in Vancouver. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Faith plus work equals success. “Work hard for your goals, and you’ll achieve what you want to achieve. If you set your mind to it, you can do it.” Fall 2016

Ranjit Takhar

Evergreen

Evergreen Maintenance Operations Manager Ranjit Takhar says that providing excellent service and staying highly organized have allowed him to grow his parents’ business while maintaining an active personal life. Running a business takes dedication. But running two? Takes an energetic zeal for entrepreneurship. UBC Okanagan alumnus Ranjit Takhar’s entrepreneurial zeal manifested early, when he started studying business management at UBC Okanagan. But rather than climb the corporate ladder, he decided to carve his own path. “I had two options: Either apply for entry-level jobs in accounting and management, or take over an organization that had the potential to grow. I knew that I could make a larger impact on the people around me by taking the second route. I come from humble beginnings. Watching my parents struggle while they worked is what motivated me.”

matt august

Takhar became the Operations Manager at Evergreen, the business his father started, and now, he also operates a parallel business. His second venture involves commercial property management for family-owned businesses. Takhar says that commercial real estate is a challenging niche, and that knowing when and where to buy is key. “Compared to residential rentals, the risk versus reward ratio is much higher. If you can’t find a tenant, you have to float the cost.” Takhar says that the solution to managing higher risks in commercial real estate also involves exceptional building maintenance – and that’s where Evergreen comes in. At Evergreen, strong organization means that Takhar has successfully managed to grow the family business – and he’s currently negotiating contracts with universities and federal institutions. “If you want to run a business, organization is key. It’s a simple concept, but it all comes down to being ready for the next day. Set goals, gauge your progress, and stay organized. And never stop growing – if you’re not growing, your becoming complacent.”

Dr. Evan Wiens & Dr. Natasha Bose-Roberts Dr. Evan Wiens and Dr. Natashia BoseRoberts say that passion, discipline, and a refusal to become complacent are enabling Okanagan Dentistry to change lives.

Okanagan Dentistry

At Okanagan Dentistry, a focus on practical problem solving, results-based treatment, and one-on-one attention are the key drivers of success. Okanagan Dentistry was formed when Dr. Evan Wiens joined the dentistry practice of well-known Kelowna dentist Dr. Ian Leitch. Dr. Wiens, who in 2013 received the Distinguished Young Alumni Award from the University of the Fraser Valley, says that dentistry provides a rare opportunity to create tangible results while also working with people. “I love solving problems for people on a daily basis while also performing treatment,” he says. “People are a huge part of dentistry – you get to build long-term relationships.” Dr. Natashia Bose-Roberts, who joined Okanagan Dentistry in July 2016, says that the hands-on nature of dentistry was a unique lure. Says Bose-Roberts: “There aren’t many jobs in medicine that involve tactile hands-on care. Medicine and dentistry are closely related, and I like being able to help people. It’s also very results-based, which is nice.” Wiens says that Okanagan Dentistry strives to improve patients’ lives above all else, and that he takes pride in the clinic’s emphasis on comprehensive care. Many dental practices will focus on basic dentistry and refer more complex conditions out to specialists, he says, but the Okanagan Dentistry team’s broad base of experience allows the practice to handle a wide array of conditions in-house. The practice’s commitment to comprehensive care has led Okanagan Dentistry to install a ceiling track lift, which allows the team to provide dental care for wheelchair-bound patients. For Wiens and Bose-Roberts, it’s all about providing the highest possible standard of care. “Complacency is dangerous,” says Wiens. “Never get satisfied with where you are - That’s when you stop progressing, both personally and professionally.”

Jason Everden

Everden Rust Funeral Home Jason Everden of Everden Rust Funeral Home says that expanding a family business involves long hours, an eye toward long-term strategy, and a willingness to trust one’s staff. For Jason Everden, taking control of the family business provided a unique opportunity to guide Kelowna families through the most challenging moments of their lives. “The whole idea is that there’s no pressure,” he says. “We’re here to provide a service, not to sell. We keep our facilities modest to help people with their funeral costs. We show people their options and allow them to remain in control – no pressure, no games.” Everden, who also serves as a director with the British Columbia Funeral Association, has operated the Everden Rust Kelowna location since 2004. And in 2014, he and his brothers bought the funeral home from their father. “My dad started this company in 1994, and I apprenticed with him back in 1996. When my wife had to go to UBC Vancouver, I got a job in a funeral home there – and when we came back, I got involved in the family business.” Everden says that his years in the funeral industry have taught him the importance of delegation, as the long hours spent on call aren’t easy. “People in the funeral services industry work about 50 to 60 hours a week, and even when you’re off, you’re still answering the phones. You could end up working until 3 in the morning. That’s the biggest challenge. But now that I have more staff, it’s easier. When I’m with my family, I don’t talk about work.” And while Everden says that hard work does indeed pay off, he also cautions new entrepreneurs that patience is a necessary trait. “Starting a business isn’t easy. Half of all businesses fail in their first five years. If you want to succeed, don’t give up. If you think you’re doing your best, try harder. If you’re doing the right thing, it’ll pay off.”

Dr. Janna Bentley

Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic

10 years into her practice, Dr. Janna Bentley’s problem-solving skills and drive to help patients are making Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic one of Kelowna’s premier vein and skin treatment centres. Dr. Janna Bentley started the Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic with a simple vision: using evidence-based medical and aesthetic treatments to make a measurable difference in patients’ lives. “I wanted something that was satisfying for me,” she says. “I enjoy having long-term relationships with patients – and because of the chronic nature of skin conditions and varicose veins, I get to know people over the course of several years.” Dr. Bentley’s approach has quickly made Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics one of the Okanagan’s premier vein and skin care clinics and allowed her to accomplish her mission of improving patients’ lives. And thanks to a partnership with UBC, the clinic is in a prime position to train the doctors of tomorrow. However, Dr. Bentley warns that success doesn’t come without challenges. “There’s just not enough of me to go around,” says Dr. Bentley. “We get a high volume of referrals and I want to do a great job (with each one), but I just don’t have enough time in the day to see everyone.” For most healthcare practices, a full patient roster and busy days are simply facts of the industry. But for Dr. Bentley, it’s a problem with a practical solution. She says that at Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics, a higher demand for care simply necessitates better planning. “We book our staff efficiently, so we have the right mix of people there every day. We also triage, so patients with urgent needs are seen first. We’re also planning to hire more nurses and another doctor.” Bentley says that for her, being a business owner is about dedication and finding unique solutions to problems. “It takes a lot of work to run a business, but if you keep putting one foot in front of the other, good things happen. If something doesn’t work out, try something else. Be creative, and keep trying.”

Laura Baumback

Great Clips Great Clips Manager Laura Baumback credits her success in business to a team-oriented approach, an eagerness to take on new challenges, and an understanding of the fleetingness of life itself. When Laura Baumback joined her father Paul’s Great Clips franchise 7 years ago, she had an opportunity to see firsthand what it takes to create a successful business. Now, as a manager at the franchise’s Governor’s Landing location, she’s experiencing for herself the real impact of Kelowna’s challenging job market. “We’re at a point now that we have a lot of great people working here,” she says, “but finding them was a challenge. It’s not easy to find skilled hairstylists, especially those who are flexible with their hours. We’re open from 9 AM to 9 PM, so we need staff who can work evenings and weekends.” Baumback says that finding and retaining great staff is something she learned from experience. She says that the most important qualification for running a business isn’t an MBA – it’s people skills. “Humility is important. Just because you’re in charge, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to be a team player.” She says that resilience and a carpe diem attitude are also key traits for entrepreneurs to learn – and they’re virtues that she’s had to learn the hard way. “My mom passed away when my dad was younger, so looking at my life and thinking about how fleeting it is, that changes the way I live. I want to make sure that I take the opportunities that are in front of me – I want to do things that challenge me.” For Baumback, it seems, business isn’t just about earning a living. To paraphrase Thoreau’s Walden, it’s about learning to live deliberately, learning to extract all the marrow of life and to rout all that stands against life’s fulfillment.

Kyle & Chad Blanleil

Working in a family business presents a variety of unique challenges, but for brothers Kyle and Chad Blanleil, it’s an opportunity to have fun while working hard – and to have something worth working for. Started in 1976 by Andre Blanleil Senior, Andre’s Electronics was originally a television and microwave repair shop. Four years later, Andre Junior would join the business, introduce a retail sales department, and help his father expand Andre’s Electronics to its 22 current locations. Now, a third generation of Blanleil men is leading the business into the digital age. Vice President Kyle Blanleil and Marketing Manager Chad Blanleil are hard at work expanding the business, with major moves planned for 2017 and beyond.

Andre’s Electronics

Andre’s Electronics will open a set of four Koodo stores in the Lower Mainland next year, a responsibility that Kyle looks forward to: “We’re also looking at expanding the Telus side of the business – we’ve had some success in smaller communities, and we want to put our brand there.” Meanwhile, the coming holiday season has Chad preparing new marketing initiatives: “We’ve moved a bit of our advertising online and onto social media. Online marketing changes every day, so there’s always something new coming down the pipe. We’re doing a lot more videos nowadays.” The Blanleil brothers expect these new initiatives to help Andre’s Electronics stay Fall 2016

competitive in an industry dominated by just a few key players. The business is also bolstered by the support of a 400-store buying group and highly knowledgeable staff. But by and large, they credit the business’ success to hard work, strong relationships, and creating a great customer experience. Kyle notes that his father often calls the business “Disneyland for grown-ups”, while Chad says that the Blanleil family’s regular social outings keep the whole team happy and engaged at work. For the Blanleil brothers, it seems, the key to a thriving business and a great working relationship is a unified and supportive family – and that’s an ideal worth working for. www.iconokanagan.com

Banee & Navee Sandhu

Gravity Float & Wellness Twin brothers Banee and Navee Sandhu started their two wellness businesses out of a sense of mission - a mission to help others lead healthy and fulfilled lives. As health enthusiasts, the Penticton-raised Sandhu brothers had known about the value of proper nutrition and healthcare for years. And while it wasn’t until one of them stepped foot in a floatation therapy tank that they decided to turn it into a business, it didn’t take long to launch once they’d made a plan. “I’d known about floating for a while,” says Banee, “and Navee mentioned cryotherapy to me. So we came up with an idea to create a wellness center based on those two things. Later, we added massage, acupuncture, and nutrition, and then created a business plan.” Five months from forming their initial idea, the brothers had acquired a building for Gravity Float and Wellness and started renovating. And while it may seem like a tight timeline for launching a business, the brothers’ past experience opening Beyond Nutrition meant they were well prepared for an accelerated opening. “When money is involved, you end up learning from your mistakes really quickly,” says Navee. The brothers say that they owe much of their current success to hard work and a willingness to take risks. “Most of the people who want to be entrepreneurs these days don’t have the work ethic,” says Banee. “If you’re not willing to work 15 hours a day, business is not for you.” Navee says that while a formal education has value, it’s not the place where aspiring entrepreneurs will learn to run a business: “Take a risk while you’re young, and don’t listen to what the education system is telling you. I’m not saying ‘don’t get an education’. Rather, what I’m saying is that the education system teaches you how to be ‘book smart’ and that’s it.”

Matt August

August Luxury Motorcars

Automotive entrepreneur Matt August founded his business on the ideals of high-end product, an unforgettable experience, and a passionate staff. Entrepreneurship is in Matt August’s blood. His grandfather started Kelowna Motors in 1945, and the family acquired a Mazda franchise in 1980. Little did August know that the family business would turn into a lifelong passion. “I’ve wanted to sell cars since I was a kid,” he says. “We had a few high-end cars at Mazda on our pre-owned lot. It’s pretty fun to sell Lamborghinis and Ferraris and other high-end cars – you get to meet a lot of interesting people.” August says that his love of the auto industry is what has kept him working hard to make August Luxury Motorcars a success, in spite of targeting a challenging niche. Luxury cars are difficult to acquire, he says, which makes it more tempting to keep inventory for longer periods of time. “There’s a Spyker C8 Preliator sitting in my showroom right now. It’s one of only two of these cars that were brought to Canada. It’s no longer legal to import these cars to Canada, and once they’re exported they can never come back. The car’s twin was sold to a buyer in Dubai, so we’re under the impression that ours is the only one of its kind in Canada.” Stocking such unique inventory means August has had to adjust his business plan, as most dealerships maximize their profits by selling inventory quickly. But the longer August Luxury Motorcars keeps the Dutch sports car, the more it appreciates in value. August says that he navigates that challenge by creating a premium experience for buyers that helps to mitigate acquisition risks by making it easier and more enjoyable to buy. “You walk in my store and you’ll get a different experience than anywhere else. Everything is done sitting on a couch browsing on an iPad. There’s no sales desk in the showroom. We’ve invested a lot of effort into our production value with respect to our marketing. Everything we do is #DrivenToChange.”

Lenetta Parry

Central Okanagan Food Bank

Growing Up Thordarson It’s a cold, rainy Saturday morning in the dying days of summer. There’s a young woman slouched against a wall in front of a storefront. Dripping wet, she tries to nod off in an attempt to get a few moments rest as the world walks past her. Nearby, a woman leaves her business and locks up for the day. As she is walking to her car, she notices the young woman is still there. She walks over and asks if everything is ok. The young woman says she has nowhere to go. She’s tired, damp, nineteen and hungry. The woman instructs the young lady to sit tight. The woman quickly drives home, makes a few sandwiches, grabs a warm coat and returns. She invites the young woman into her gym and offers her a hot shower. The young woman jumps at the opportunity. While she is in the shower, her clothes are thrown in the dryer. Soon after, she’s clean, warm and has a belly full of food. As the young woman leaves, she says, “Thank You.” The woman says, “I wish I could do more.” The young woman says, “You have done more than anyone…” Why do I tell this tale? Because the helpful woman in this story is my mom. They say “Look back to where you have been, for a clue to where you are going.” People often ask me: Why work at a Food Bank? As I look back at the many examples of “Growing Up Thordarson,” I realize my parents taught me to always find an opportunity to be a blessing to others, to love deeply and always be compassionate. As the Executive Director of the Central Okanagan Food Bank, I hold these teachings close to my heart… I was destined to do this work. By Lenetta Parry

Allie Henderson

Temple Foods

MotoCross and health food preparation don’t typically go together, but for Allie Henderson, founding a health-based meal preparation company was simply the logical move after her off-road racing career came to an end in a traumatic accident. The 27-year-old exhibits a powerful drive to serve the community, a drive that few can mimic. Entrepreneurship is a core aspect of Allie Henderson’s identity, and has been all her life. Prior to managing her MotoCross career – an entrepreneurial venture of a different kind – Henderson ran a business in her youth that involved buying, training, and selling horses. But it wasn’t until she was forced to stop competing in MotoCross events that Henderson found her passion for the health food business. “I lost half my pancreas in a crash,” she says. “After losing my health, I started to value it more. I started eating better. And as I started eating whole foods, I realized how difficult it is (to eat healthy). It takes a lot of time to shop locally, to prepare food – and half the time you waste most of your groceries because you don’t use them before they go bad.” But rather than give up and revert back to her old eating habits, Henderson decided to make a major lifestyle change – and that’s when she started Temple Foods. “Temple Foods delivers fresh, locally sourced, never-frozen food to your doorstep, Monday to Friday. The meals are created to enhance energy and vitality. Everything is served in mason jars with stainless steel cutlery, so there’s no garbage. And of course, we take care of the dishes.” While Henderson’s business is still young – Temple Foods was established in February 2016 – the company is quickly growing, going from just three clients in their first month to 22 in their second. Henderson credits her company’s fast growth to a focus on serving the community and a sense of mission. “A lot of people build businesses to serve their egos, but that’s a dying trend. A business is an opportunity to give, to contribute to the world. Your business isn’t about you.” Fall 2016

Josh Richmond

Richmond Custom Homes Home builder Josh Richmond of Richmond Custom Homes says he owes his success in business to hard work, an unwavering emphasis on customer service, and an eye for impactful design. Josh Richmond’s venture into business started off curiously. The home builder entered the residential construction industry after a family friend persuaded him that it was a more fulfilling field than residential development, and quickly found that building homes was something he was passionate about. “I started from ground zero, learning the business from nothing, which served to be very beneficial. After a while, I got into the purchasing end, then supervisory work, and then I started taking on my own projects.” Richmond says that seeing his small operation bear fruit while working full-time was fulfilling, and the gradual growth of his company allowed him to simply enjoy the entrepreneurial journey. “I incorporated in 2009 and started small – building single custom homes for clients. Eventually I hired a supervisor, and then another, and now we do about 10-12 diverse projects per year. We specialize in West Coast contemporary, but work closely with clients in a number of different designs, styles, and areas such as Lakestone and Crawford Point. Richmond’s experience in business wasn’t without its challenges, though, and he’s learned the value of having great staff. “It’s all about surrounding yourself with quality people with skillsets that complement one another. Management is a critical element. There are a lot of integral steps in building a unique, quality home on a tight timeline, and you have to be able to deliver on your promises.” He also underscores the importance of a positive attitude and a strong work ethic, as that’s how successful businesspeople stay successful. “Not every day is going to be a great day – you have to be prepared to deal with problems on many levels. If you operate under the right set of strict principles, you can find a solution for anything. And when you do experience success, you have to remember what got you there and to continue to drive hard at it.”

The Calgary-raised entrepreneur started Moda, a bathroom renovation company, in 2009 – and today, Schroner and her multiple crews of renovation specialists are working hard to redefine what it means to be a contractor. “The biggest challenge in this industry is gaining the trust who have, unfortunately, been burned by other contractors. A lot of contractors are in and out – they don’t put much of an effort into pleasing their clients. I want to build a relationship. I want to guide people and educate them on renovations.” Schroner says that at Moda, building strong relationships with customers and suppliers – relationships founded on clear communication - is the key to making renovations run smoothly. And after years of successfully guiding homeowners through bathroom renovations in Calgary, she’s bringing her unique hands-on approach to the Okanagan. “I’m looking forward to providing a one-of-a-kind service to Kelowna. Renovations don’t have to be stressful – at Moda, we make the process simple and fun. I don’t have a storefront, and I don’t think I ever will, because the renovation starts and ends in the home.” The entrepreneur credits her business’ success in Calgary to having strong systems in place – systems that are easy to follow and simplify the process of running a business. She also claims that innovative new approaches to business are what have enabled her to expand Moda. At the end of the day, she says, running a successful business comes down to just a few simple things: Transparency, a passion for one’s work, and the courage to invest time and energy into other people. “The most important thing for me is people,” she says. “I’ve fallen in love with the people of Kelowna. Kelowna residents tend to live life a little more than people in Calgary.”

Randy Therrien

Candel Custom Homes Candel Custom Homes owner Randy Therrien entered the home building industry to satisfy a creative drive, and 15 years later, the ingenuity of new design still holds its appeal. For an outdoorsman like Randy Therrien, land development and home building offered a chance to escape the urban sprawl of Vancouver and enjoy life at a slower pace. “When I was younger I invested in a subdivision in Quail Ridge, and after a project that I’d teed up in Vancouver fell through, I moved to the Okanagan.” Therrien’s experience in development and home building extends back to 2001, when he started a custom carpentry business. And while carpentry was fulfilling, Therrien was eager to work in home development – so when he was given the opportunity to acquire an ownership stake in Candel, he took it. As a design-build company, Candel provided Therrien with a great opportunity to take on a variety of projects ranging from multi-family projects to unique luxury homes. And while Therrien says Candel is as busy as ever – he’s currently supervising two townhouse project sites – he says that aspiring business owners need to be prepared for both the busy seasons and the slow ones. “The hardest lessons I’ve had to learn were economic in nature. The recession was a very humbling time for me – I went from being well off to scrambling just to survive. But the school of hard knocks is the best way to learn lessons. People’s true colours come out when they’re fighting to survive.” Still, Therrien says that resilience – and the creativity that it births - is what has made Candel Custom Homes the successful business it is today. “We have two multi-family sites on the go right now, which is a lot for us. My business card says that I’m a Corporate Magician. There are days in this business when we make the impossible happen.”

Jason Friesen

Voyager RV

Voyager RV Vice President Jason Friesen says joining the family business has been a fulfilling experience that helped him uncover a hidden passion for the RV industry. Most substitute teachers say that finding full-time work in the education industry is a struggle. But for Jason Friesen, it presented the opportunity to find a new passion for business. “I was on the teacher-on-call list, and I was having trouble finding a full-time teaching job. When I wasn’t being called in to teach, I’d come to Voyager RV and help my dad with the company’s online marketing. I grew up working here in the summers, and while it wasn’t my plan to be in business, I quickly found that I loved it.” In his teenage years, Friesen worked in several departments at Voyager RV through the summers, eventually assuming operational control of the company in 2003. “My father started the dealership in 1984, and although he retired in 2003, it’s still very much his dealership. But when people ask to talk to the owner, I’m usually the person they talk to.” Friesen says he’s pleased with Voyager’s growth, but that managing a growing team and company isn’t without its challenges. “As a dealership, we’re trying to preach certain messages through our company culture. We have a staff of over 50 now, and that means it takes a lot of work to keep growing the brand while also keeping our team happy.” He says that his experience pursuing his education degree, and his subsequent teaching and coaching roles, have prepared him to manage the many different personalities that make up an RV dealership staff. Friesen believes that learning to manage people is an essential lesson that aspiring business owners need to learn early. “I made a lot of decisions that were unpopular with some of our longstanding staff, which isn’t easy. But without those decisions, Voyager wouldn’t be where it is today. If you want to get buy-in from people, you need to speak to their motivations.”

Mike Byland

Bylands Nurseries Bylands Vice President Mike Byland says that strong family ties and a willingness to adapt are key components of thriving in a seasonal industry. Mike Byland’s official title at Bylands Nurseries is Vice President of Sales and Human Resources, but more often than not, he ends up working in several departments at the business that his grandparents started. “My primary role is in dealing with our staff and sales team, but I also work on our mass merchant accounts. This is a very seasonal business, so most of the time we have to be reactive to things.” Byland says that managing the seasonality of the business can be a challenge, as seasonal cash flow means it’s more difficult to budget for expenses and schedule staff. “We do nearly 50 percent of our yearly sales volume in a single 4-week window. Dealing with live product is also challenging. There are a lot of factors outside our control that impact us on a year-to-year basis. The key is to be nimble and to have a good team.” Byland says that having his father as a business mentor has presented him with a great opportunity to learn valuable lessons, including the importance of hiring staff with diverse and complementary skill sets. Byland also says that he’s learned to make the right mistakes. “It’s okay to make mistakes as long as you find solutions. And if you’re not making mistakes, you’re either not trying hard enough or you’re not being creative enough.” Byland says that good business owners gather just enough information to make a decision, and then commit to a course of action. Rather than analyzing every possible facet of an issue, he says that it’s more productive to make decisions based on gut feelings. “For the most part, we all have good instincts. A lot of people spend way too much time trying to make decisions. You’re better off making a few wrong decisions along the way and learning from them.”

OKANAGAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA See It ... Hear It ... Love it ...

“Our vision is to bring the magic of live orchestral music to people of all ages throughout the Okanagan.”

T

he Okanagan Symphony orchestra began modestly as a small group of enthusiasts meeting in Penticton in the fall of 1959. The orchestra gave its first concerts in March 1960 in Kelowna, Penticton, Revelstoke and Vernon.

Over the next two years, concerts were also given in Kamloops, Oliver and Summerland. The vision of a semi-professional orchestra was considered in 1972 and with the assistance of the Canada Council and the BC Cultural Fund, the first resident musician, cellist George Kiraly, was engaged in 1974. Now in its 56th year, the orchestra has developed from a largely amateur organization with a part-time manager and a part-time conductor, to an excellent regional orchestra with a full-time executive director, a full-time music director, a core of 20 professional musicians, support staff and access to dozens of professional and non-professional musicians as needs dictate. The 2016/2017 Season “Planning a season is one of the great joys of being a Music Director,” Rosemary Thomson says. “There is so much wonderful music to choose from. Our Artistic Planning team is excited to share our season with you, our passionate audience, and we hope that it will stir your imagination as you consider these concerts.” The OSO just recently announced some of Canada’s pre-eminent soloists, welcoming back audience favourites and introducing new talent to the valley. With a pre-concert chat before each of the Deloitte Masterworks Series concerts, open dress rehearsals, family matinées, school concerts, preschool activities, the OSO Chorus and the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra, there are many ways to enjoy the OSO. Proper Man

“It sounds a lot like high school in the 1980’s (or a lot like 80’s high school movies, at least).” Jason Parkes (winemaker / songwriter) As a winemaker, Peachland-born Jason Parkes attributes the exhaustion of crush (harvest & wine making time) as the catalyst for most of the songs on the band’s new album.

www.propermanband.com

T

Pamela Anderson had the opportunity through DDI PR to meet Jason in the spring of 2016. She instantly fell in love with his style and character. The Pamela Anderson wine collection was inevitable, launching their first release, a brut rosé in the fall of 2016 with the hatch winery. A first of seven vintages tha t will be created by this dynamic duo.

he Proper Man frontman, Jason Parkes, and guitarist, Petri Nieminen, spent a lot of time writing music that sounded just like everything else. But when a few too many scotch whiskies made Jason’s words slur together, an English accent emerged that had Petri dancing terribly with excitement.

They knew they were on to something. Rounding out The Proper Man are Eric Chisholm (drums), Nori Wentworth (bass), Travis Saunders (piano), and Adam Jeffrey Potter (guitar), who together create a sound that’s a lot like high school in the 1980’s (or a lot like 80’s high school movies, at least). Their new wave meets punk sugar tunes will have you tapping your low top Chucks and remembering those squishy s weet feelings from back in the day. As a winemaker, Jason attributes the exhaustion of crush (harvest and wine making time) as the catalyst for most of the songs on the band’s new album. “There was not a lot of thinking involved, during crush you’re too tired for that. I went with my gut, and back in time to the early 80’s, to high school and hanging out in my Italian friend’s parents’ wine cellar.” With every bottle of wine made by this winemaker / songwriter attached to a The Proper Man song, this album is sure to be complex and satisfying and with a number of high notes. Now head over to their website www.propermanband.com and listen to some of their cool tunes. And make sure to follow them on Facebook (/propermanofficial) to stay informed about upcoming concerts in our area!

!

FIVE Considerations WHEN BUYING ! Your First BUSINESS by John-Erik Grain

!

While you sift through those piles of mundane papers, redundant forms, and pointless procedural tasks as you work for “The Man”, you think how life would be owning a business and being your own boss. Now, weeks later, you have made the decision to buy your first business and enter the world of the self-employed. You have even chosen a local business and are working with a great Business Broker looking to put forward an offer to purchase. Everything seems great, but, you can’t sleep and your stewing pot stomach feels like a concoction of excitement, fear, exhilaration, fear, hope, fear, gratitude, and may other elations, but, mostly; fear. Fear of failure is a roadblock to success for entrepreneurs, but, regretting that you didn’t take that initial step to tackle your fear of owning a business is much more difficult to overcome; and it leads to resentment. It will be overwhelming at times and each business case is unique, but, here are Five Major considerations to overcoming any lingering fears for a first time business buyer:

1. BELIEVE IN IT

Buy into something that you are truly interested in and an industry you believe in. It needs to be a good fit for your interests and lifestyle as well. Below the surface of business fundamentals is a real person that requires fulfillment from their efforts. Don’t let yourself down by buying something that doesn’t fit and resonate with you.

2. MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS

Line up your consultants to discuss your decision; just remember that YOU make every final decision, not your consultants. Your Business Broker, Banker, Lawyer, and Accountant will all be involved in the process so it’s best to schedule these appointments quickly.

3. COMPLETE TASKS QUICKLY

Create your PRE-CLOSING and POST-CLOSING CHECKLISTS to ensure that you know what you need to do each day and then do them. Edit the list daily and ask your Business Broker for their input. Remember that if you require GST, PST, Business Number, Business License, Worksafe Account or some other

52

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Fall 2016

output from a government organization, its going to take 10 times longer you think so do those first allowing sufficient processing time. Often the landlord is a large REIT or corporation and assigning of a property lease will require similar considerations.

4. CASHFLOW IS KING

Sufficient financing to purchase the business and get through the first two months of operations is critical. Ensure you have enough cash and financing in place to cover everything on your checklists. Remember, on day one, your business (personal or corporate) likely has zero credit with suppliers so expect to pay C.O.D. even if the Seller currently has 30-60 day terms. Don’t forget about your lease deposit, lawyers fees, business insurance, utility deposits, first months rent and payroll for month one.

5. FOLLOW YOUR PLAN

Your business plan isn’t used just to get a loan. Follow your plan. Revise or Update it as frequently as possible. Strive for your growth targets and make decisions early on as to how you will achieve them. Profit will be the bi-product of executing a well thought through plan and fulfillment will be the feeling you get at the end of it.

Business Brokers regularly work with first time business buyers and buyers who have purchased many businesses who face these tough considerations. They understand this process and the costs/benefits associated with each unique business case. Business Brokers can guide all business buyers through the entire process from the time you choose to join the self-employed to the time you enjoy your first year of profits. Don’t leave your next big business decision up to chance. Understand the major considerations as a first time business buyer and tackle your fears head on. Remember, each business case is unique and your Business Broker will provide advice and direction during the entire process.fees, environmental reports, etc.) that will need to be discussed with your Business Broker and REALTOR.

design TRENDS

The Popularity of the Colour White White is a versatile colour in home decorating and renovation. White helps any space look effortlessly chic, blends well with just about any colour and can be incorporated into various design styles from modern to traditional. While the colour white is always trendy, the paint manufacturers Benjamin Moore chose white (Simply White OC-117) as their colour for 2016. White can be used nearly anywhere inside and outside the home. Improving interior and exterior spaces with white elements is easier than you might think, and it instantly can make anything look as good as new.

Kitchen

While rich cherrywood cabinets and deeply hued granite countertops have long been popular in kitchens, creamy white cabinets paired with blonde wood countertops can work together to make kitchens seem open and airy. If all white is not your thing, brighten up kitchen spaces with white canisters, cookie jars and a fresh bouquet of white flowers to add instant appeal.

Living Room

Use white as a base colour for living room spaces so you can build on it with other hues on pillows and draperies, mixing and matching however you see fit. Homeowners who have children and/or pets should look for furniture with removable slipcovers. This way they are easily removed and laundered.

A style for every point of view

Bathroom

White bathrooms look fresh and are easy to clean and maintain. White tiles provide a classic look. Include coloured bath mats, towels and shower curtains to break up the white as you see fit. A neutral white base makes it easy to switch out colour schemes whenever you feel like it.

Bedroom

Feminine and fresh, white bedrooms may not be the first choice for novice designers. If the prospect of white on white seems too sterile, offset deeper hues on bed linens and walls with white furniture. This provides some pop against the darker contrast. Keep in mind that doing a bed up in all white means it will always be easy to find matching sheets and pillowcases, making it possible to ensure everything looks cohesive and crisp. Outdoors Use white paint on trims, shutters, mailboxes, and more to provide that pop of contrast against the rest of the home. White complements just about every color, making it a versatile choice on a homes accents regardless of the main exterior color of that home. White and other light shades will reflect the sun as well, contributing to cooler temperatures on walkways, decks and other structures, which can be advantageous to homeowners who live in warm climates.

MAN of STEEL

THE ART OF CORY FUHR

Anthropomorphic transformations have fascinated and inspired my work through my life. “The fusion of inanimate cold metals and the animated, our bodies and our pastoral surroundings, drives my creative process.” Born and raised in Vernon, Cory Fuhr spent most of his childhood building his own go carts, tandem bicycles, and ski bikes. ”I raced bicycles through my teens, and unbolted and took apart most everything in my childhood years, curious about how everything worked,” Cory remembers. “Eventually I started putting things back together and fixed them, even rebuilt a car engine at 16. I guess I’ve always been a gear head and had a fascination with most things mechanical.” In his later teens he worked as a mechanic in an industrial electric motor rebuild shop before, at 23, he started taking welding more seriously and built his own line of tables and chairs and also started studying the most interesting machine - the human body. “I can’t say I had a dream to be an artist even though my mother is a painter, my career happened organically through my appreciation of creating instead of rebuilding or fixing,” Cory laughs. “I started building body parts, arms, legs, and torsos in steel, and then one day built an entire human. There he was, standing in front of me, his own person.” In 2003 Cory Fuhr was commissioned to create a lifesize 300lb sculpture for Jack Rabinovitch, which laid the foundation for becoming one of Canada’s foremost metal artists. He created the famous speed skater for the 2010 Olympics, now placed in the Richmond Olympic Oval, followed by a volleyball player for the same venue. “It has been a very rich experience over the years with many public placements, movie placements and large events,” Fuhr says, “but I came close to not doing much ever again after an accident in 2013 when I broke my neck and back, but I did all of my own recovery work and rebuilt myself this time.My large knowledge of anatomy definitely came in handy and the whole experience melded me more with my work and I now have a new view on my own sculptures.”

You will find Cory Fuhr’s sculptures at TUTT STREET GALLERY in Kelowna (www.tuttartgalleries.ca).

raghwa Gopal

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

CEO Accelerate Okanagan

Interview: Rick Maddison

Photography: Gary Nylander

“The high-tech industry in the Okanagan has 633 high-tech companies employing 7600 people, with an economic impact of $1.3 billion.” Rick: How would you describe yourself? Raghwa: Serial entrepreneur, mentor, community builder, these are 3 things that would summarize who I am and what I mainly do. Rick: Explain the power of an idea? Raghwa: Its huge, the power of an idea could be as big as Google, or take it down to a more local level like Hootsuite, Ryan Holmes had the idea of providing a very simple solution to social media where people were having to go to 3 or 4 places, why can’t they do them in one place? So the power of that idea is a billion dollar entity. Real close to us, here in Kelowna Lance Priebe’s idea of creating Club Penguin where kids love to play and build a virtual world around. The power of an idea is humongous; you just need to give life to that power. Rick: What traits do you look for if you’re going to mentor somebody? Raghwa: Talking to somebody for just a few minutes, I can quickly separate not whether they will be successful or not but whether I can help them. And having worked with over 200 entrepreneurs over the last ten years I have a pretty good feel for what works and what doesn’t work. There is a number of characteristics. One is they need to be fearless, they need to have a little bit of swagger. So those are two pretty important things, the third thing is they need to have at least some sense of “coachability.” Having a bit of that swagger is nice but on the on the other hand they need to be humble enough

or smart enough to know what they don’t know and that they need coaching. Rick: What do investors look for? Raghwa: Number one thing that an investor will look for is the team itself. So if you’re just a one-person entity then it becomes hard to invest in but if there’s a pair, two people, with two different skill sets, is sort of the ideal position. If you’re building a technology, if you have one cofounder who has deep technical background and the other founder with deep sales and marketing background and some sort of domain knowledge in the area that they are trying to play, that is the most ideal thing that they are looking for. Rick: Is there a threat for any technology company that they should wary of? Raghwa: With how quickly and cheaply you can build technology today they always need to worry about protecting the market and growing the market. So as an example if there’s a successful company here today that has created an app or a solution and they’re out there selling, if they’re not growing fast enough, there could be someone out there who can actually build a large scale application for very cheap. Rick: What does the new Okanagan Centre for Innovation mean for Kelowna? Raghwa: I think it’s going to be a great catalyst, we have great momentum right now today in tech in the whole

Okanagan and opening up that Okanagan Center for Innovation will actually rejuvenate, a tremendous amount of growth. We have just done our latest economic impact. High tech industry in the Okanagan has 633 high tech companies in the Okanagan employing 7600 people, economic impact of 1.3 billion. Direct revenue from those 633 companies is just over 1 billion and in addition, 290 million in economic impact, so 1.3 billion dollar economic impact in 2015. We commissioned an independent researcher two years ago, there was 558 high tech companies in the Okanagan employing 6500 people with roughly 1 billion in economic impact and about 800 million in direct revenue and around 200 million in surrounding economic impact. So if you compare from those last 2 years we’ve grown 30% and what things like the Okanagan Center for Innovation and your programs will do over the next two years, I think will easily be a 2 billion dollar industry which today, wine and tourism industry combined in the entire province is a 2 billion dollar industry. So high tech in the Okanagan would be equal or bigger than the whole wine and tourism industry. So I’m pretty pleased with what we are doing, where we are going.

Rick Maddison is proud father of Jack and Tess and has been married to his beautiful wife Joni for over 13 years. He runs a successful media company in Kelowna that creates memorable campaigns for his clients across Western Canada Fall 2016

A Woman Walks into a Bra Shop and says ... ... “I need a white bra and a black bra.”The bra fitter smiles at her and says, “ Why?” The woman looks perplexed and says, “Because… that is what my mother always wore…” At this point usually the woman’s voice trails off as she seriously contemplates why she only wears white bras and black bras. It is usually followed up with the hast y justification of, “Well when I wear white shirts I don’t want my bra to show!” The bra fit ter smiles wider and says, “Well then you will definitely want a RED bra!” At this point the woman usually starts to laugh ner vously, as, lets face it, there is just too many stereot ypes around red bras and lingerie. She also looks doubt ful and intrigued at the same time. The bra fit ter takes a beautiful lacy RED bra from the rack and explains, “A red bra can be one of the most practical colours in your under wear drawer. Depending on your skin tone red bras disappear under white and light colour shirts and they also work under dark coloured clothes.” Within minutes the whole theor y that bras function as either utilitarian must-wear clothes or erotic enticers for others’ pleasure is shat tered as the woman wonders can there be more to this? As a professional bra fit ter, one of the greatest joys of my job is helping women challenge their beliefs surrounding the seemingly simple concept of bras. It is amazing how much of women’s identit y, self esteem, health, concepts of beaut y and sexualit y all gets connected in a change room during a bra fit ting. One of the things I know for sure is most women, myself included, can be ver y hard on ourselves. I remember after my first professional bra fit ting, I finally felt comfortable in my own skin. I felt like my choice of underwear was my secret energy booster and even a creative expression of who I really am. I was able to be feminine, play ful, sassy and strong in my under wear even when my outer wear reflected the conser vative and masculine appropriate clothing of my previous corporate career. So what is your favorite colour? Do you have a bra in your collection that is that precise yummy tint that makes you smile as you reach for it to put it on? If you don’t, I suggest you get one!

Laser Hair Removal - What to Consider (and why it is my personal favourite) by Dr. Janna Bentley

the future. And with each treatment there is a significant reduction in pesky hair. Since it eliminates the hair follicle – the pinpoint shadow of dark hair is gone and your skin also becomes smoother. Hello smooth fair legs!

Dr. Janna Bentley, MD, is also the Medical Director of Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic, a premier cosmetic medical clinic in Kelowna, BC.

Let me tell you about my absolute favourite treatment that I’ve had: laser hair removal. You may relate better to this, girls: ever wonder how free you would feel if you never had to bother shaving your legs again? Typical patient story: a young woman who has a rush of fear just thinking about putting on a bathing suit due to excess hair... we remove that hair and with it, anxiety gone! How does LHR work? It beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light. That destroys the hair. Permanently. But the term permanent laser hair removal must be addressed, since everyone needs several treatments. Why? Hair grows in cycles – like seasons in nature – and the laser only affects hair during the growing cycle. So expect 3 to 6 treatments, but more/less depending on surface area and hair density. Each treatment is 4 to 6 weeks apart. Also, new hair emerges as we age – and these will need a touchup treatment occasionally in

As a physician, we look for the most effective treatment with the least risk... and LHR is simply most effective hair reduction solution bar none. There are no alternative therapies or “natural remedies” that even come close. What at about “Spa Sales!” or “Groupon Deals”? Everyday email ads or internet popups yell SALE. But is “cheapest price” and impulse the best for deciding where to go to get LHR? Erm, no. First of all, do your homework. Book a consultation and ask questions. Results vary from person to person as everyone’s skin/ hair/ genetic makeup is different. Know that different skin tones require different laser light wavelengths. And not all lasers are created equal. Does the laser suit your skin type? At Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic, our Cynosure Elite Laser has two different wavelengths- Alexandrite 755nm for lighter skin tones and Nd:YAG 1064nm for medium to darker skin tones. More importantly, qualifications and experience make a significant difference for your safety. So learn about the clinic performing the treatment. Are they experienced, and are they a credentialled laser technician or accredited nurse? Do they ensure you are ready (eg not too much suntan, or not recently plucked/shaved)? Cost? It varies widely, so you should receive a free consult, quote and answers to any questions – that is what we provide, anyway. Many think of all the money they’ve spent over the years shaving, threading, waxing – and the hair always grows back! Laser has effective results with fewer visits needed when done by experts, so almost everyone feels it is worth it. For effective and safe laser hair removal, I recommend you pick a clinic staffed with medical professionals. The benefit of a physician-led medical cosmetic clinic and experienced technicians/nurses is peace of mind and fewer sessions due to the effectiveness and accuracy of each treatment.

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

The Bottom of the Barrel ... “All of a sudden thirty-two years of Dr. Seuss books has paid off!”

Typically I’m a ‘glass half full’ kind of girl. So when I say I’m at the bottom of the barrel, clearly I’m being dramatic and the truth is, I just need my glass topped up with a tasty BC wine because life is pretty darn great. Sometimes it feels like we’re at the bottom of the barrel, but the good news is… once you’re at the bottom, the only place left to go is up. (Obvious observation, I know. Keep reading, we’ll get there.) I’ve recently experienced a career change that has brought me tears, laughs, and tough life lessons. In hindsight I wish I had experienced all of this years ago – but hindsight is 20/20, right? Here’s what the last ninety days has brought me: Price Check In Aisle: REALITY For the first time in my life, I’m price checking. The $12 that I save is the equivalent to Netflix for a month. Gold star! Yes, I still waste money here and there, but oddly enough, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything by being on a budget. It feels good to say no to my kids. So what if they actually have to experience wanting, earning and saving money. It’s Okay To Not Be Okay We constantly tell kids not to be afraid to ask for help. So why as adults do we have such a hard time admitting we want help? Or why do we say that successes are built on failures, yet a lot of #adulting frowns upon failures? It’s okay to feel failure. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to not have all of the answers. Relationships Matter Knowing that my mom and dad are stuck with me, my biggest fear was that my network of connections would forget me. I couldn’t have been more wrong and I look forward to the day that I can be someone’s someone in return. Great relationships come from being vulnerable – even if there’s a chance of getting hurt. It’s okay for people to know you’re not okay. Facebook can be misleading.

smart and sometimes even going through the exact same struggles. Speaking less does not necessarily make me less memorable. I don’t have to own every conversation, or have every last word. All of a sudden thirty-two years of Dr. Seuss books has paid off. And perhaps all of those crazy quotes aren’t intended to mean anything until they actually mean something? “If you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good.” “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” My favourite Dr. Seuss quote, and to my person who has faithfully brought home copious amounts of McCain’s chocolate cake lately… “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” The view from the bottom of the barrel has brought me an invaluable, intangible familiarity of humility and kindness that only these experiences could have brought. No drowning of sorrows here.

OAK + CRU Social Kitchen & Wine Bar Delta Grand Okanagan, Kelowna

Located within the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort, OAK + CRU Social Kitchen & Wine Bar is the new “in” place in Kelowna. More than $9.4 million was spent on a massive renovation over the past year, and after countless meetings, and hundreds of design decisions, it transformed the hotel lobby and restaurant area into the Okanagan’s hottest new restaurant and patio destination. Envisioned by mackaywong, who have designed some of Canada’s top restaurants and bars, guests can now enjoy a new stylish lounge room with a sleek bar, modern art and unique leather chairs, or dine in style steps down in the open restaurant area or sit at the kitchen bar with its new fire deck oven to hang with the chefs. THE OKANAGAN’S NEWEST WATERFRONT RESTAURANT “I think we all have felt the same- there’s not enough places to choose from when it comes to relaxing and dining in style on a waterfront patio,” says Daniel Bibby, General Manager of the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort. “Well, that has changed!” No doubt, it has. With panoramic views over the lagoon and lake and room for 130 people on the patio, either on comfy couches and chairs, or at tables, Kelowna finally has a new “must-go” on the water. Step inside into the 260 seat restaurant and lounge area, and you have wonderful water views through the floor to ceiling roll back windows. LOCALLY CRAFTED This is not your average wine bar. And it is not just a wine bar - there is a brand new Wine Experience Centre, too, featuring 2800 bottles and 300 labels from the Okanagan Valley. “We strive to be the city’s most popular gathering spot, driving energy as the hub of the hotel lobby,” says Bibby, “so we will boast the best Okanagan wine by the glass program and a visual interactive cellar of over 300 labels.” Although there will be a big focus on wine, the bar at OAK + CRU will also feature a cocktail program with the freshest local ingredients and a selection of local craft beers. iconic events! Mile High Wine & Music

Silver Star Mountain Resort, Vernon, August 13 photography by Shelly Vida

Love to drink wine? Love to be outdoors? Love to listen to live music? Have you tried doing all three at once at 5280 feet above sea level? Being a mile high above sea level awakens your senses - inhale the aromas, savour the atmosphere, watch the people, listen to the sounds and touch nature. On August 13th The Okanagan Wine Festivals and SilverStar brought back Canada’s highest outdoor wine tasting - with 27 different British Columbia wineries, cheeses from Dairy Farmers of Canada, unique cafÊ and wine pairings from Starbucks Canada, catering from Browns Socialhouse and the Trips unique blend of lively bluegrass and original music. We truly enjoyed this amazing event - and look who we ran into! Yes, that is movie actor Wesley Snipes sampling wines from the Okanagan as the guest of the Okanagan Wine Festivals and Silver Star Mountain Resort!

Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery Oliver, BC

Q

uinta Ferreira is owned and operated by John and Maria Ferreira; born in Portugal, they immigrated to Canada with their families at a young age. They purchased the original estate in 1979 as an orchard where they grew cherries, peaches and apples. Coming from a Portuguese heritage their passion of wine then led them to convert the orchard into a vineyard after 20 years in production and packaging of fruit. The conversion of fruit to wine was done over a three-year period with the first merlot and chardonnay grapes being planted in 1999. Additional varietals followed.

The landscape and soil on the Black Sage Bench provide optimal growing conditions for grapes. Today the Quinta Ferreira vineyard is in full production featuring varietals including Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Melbec and most recent Zinfandel and Petit Verdot. Their award winning wines are the 2008 Syrah (Lt. Governors Award 2011), the 2009 Syrah (Canadian Wine Awards 2012 - Best Red Wine In Canada) and, of course, the 2008 Obra Prima which won Best Red Wine in the 2012 Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. Events & Weddings Providing stunning photo opportunities and excellent views of both Oliver and the surrounding mountains, Quinta Ferreira is the perfect setting for events and your special day. They also host public events that feature portuguese cuisine. Bifana’s (pork on a bun) is in spring, Paella in summer, and winemakers dinner in the caves in fall. Wedding ceremonies usually take place atop their own incredible caves, followed by a reception in any of their three different areas; under a 200 person tent, on the licensed patio which will accomodate 50 people seated, or even in one of the handbuilt 4,500 sq.ft. caves which will accomodate 80-100 people. Make sure to visit the wineries tasting room, opened in 2007, which will celebrate its10th year next summer.

the tasting note

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

YES, we have to admit that we miss the summer. And what a weird summer it was this year, right? Although, we hear from the winemakers that they are very happy with the hours of sun and the percipitation. Good for them ... and hopefully for us to enjoy an excellent 2016 vintage at one point. But, let’s face it - it’s fall! They days are shorter, evenigs colder, and we see Christmas decor at most stores. And the changing seasons come with changing preferences in wine. The crisp whites we crave in summer give way to heartier reds in fall and we have looked around and found some very interesting wines for the colder seasons for you.

2014 R&D RED BLEND

2015 SANDHILL VIOGNIER

2015 LOST INHIBITIONS

“Solid offering, bold and richly textured with youthful, chalky tannins and generous mass of fruit…Excellent length. Very good value.”

This beautiful aromatic and refreshingwine with a floral nose with hints of tropical and orchard fruit, is the newest vintage from the Osprey Ridge Vineyard in the South Okanagan. On the palate, lychee, juicy pear, nectarine, and lots of crisp acid.

With over 200 labels in the series, Lost Inhibitions by Church & State offer a refreshing take on traditional label conventions.

Nothing much to add. So let us tell you that R&D is short for ‘Research and Development,’ referring to the successful experimental approach taken by Culmina Family Estate Winery.

“A bit buttery” also comes to mind, and we found 12° the perfect temperature to enjoy this wine. We would enjoy this Viognier as a cocktail wine or pair it with pan-fried fish fillets; roast chicken; shell fish; smoked salmon; baked ham; rice pilaf with almonds and apricots; or fish cakes.

The name also honours Culmina co-proprietor Don Triggs and his twin brother, Ron; their images are depicted on the label. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is complex and layered on the nose, with ripe cherry, raspberry and plum. Firm, ripe and tangy with great balance. This will be a great barbecue wine, especially when paired with your favourite cut of steak. $21.75 Alc./Vol.: 14%

2014 CONVICTION SOVEREIGN OPAL There is more to this wine than just a cool label. The 2014 “Industrialist” won the Gold Medal at the 2015 Grand Harvest Awards and has wonderful fruit aromas of yellow apple, yellow plum, Bartlett pear and tangerine are accented by notes of spice, floral and marzipan. The light to medium-bodied Sovereign Opal is smooth yet refreshing with flavours of juicy tropical fruit and melon. Tangerine, pink grapefruit, tropical fruit and exotic flower notes linger on the finish. Have it with grilled pork tenderloin with fruit chutneys, mild Indian curry cuisine, Panang chicken, or Roast chicken. Excellent value! $12.99 Alc./Vol.: 11.7% www.convictionwines.ca

This white, a blend of Viognier, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, opens with intense aromas of apricot, nectarine, rose petal, jasmine and limey citrus zest. On the palate, the wine is full, rich, and explosive, with intense floral and citrus notes in addition white peach, apricot, nectarine.

2105 FERN WALK PINOT GRIS Fern Walk wines are crafted from grapes sourced from their Osoyoos and Black Sage Bench vineyards in the southern Okanagan Valley. Unoaked to preserve the fresh varietal character, this wine has amazing minerality and spice that is complemented by flavours of apricot, papaya, passionfruit and aromatic honeyblossoms. We would pair this Pinot Gris with Asian-spiced cuisine. Think Thai food, think Indian dishes.Although - we enjoyed it with pasta with scallops. $16.99

2015 MONSTER VINEYARD ROSE “PINK POWER!” ! Ripe watermelon in colour with enticing aromas of baked rhubarb and cherries. Flavours of garden raspberries with notes of strawberries and a hint of lime on the finish. The French technique known as saignée was used to make the Monster Rosé. This process produces rosé wine as a by-product of red wine fermentation. Juice from Malbec (54%), Merlot (28%) and Syrah (18%) was extracted from the grapes before any significant skin contact occurred. It was then cold settled & fermented to preserve the bright fruit flavours. This Monster is ready to be set free upon release. Drink now! $15.90

the last word...

What We Love About The Okanagan

Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to the John Kot, President of Kelowna Hyundai, about what makes the Okanagan so special.

1

Local and Organic. My wife, family and I really like food to be sustainable and organic. From Geo’s coffee to Oak + Cru, Raudz, Crafty Kitchen, the Eldorado, Summerhill Pyramid Bistro – we stick to those kinds of restaurants. The Farmcrest Chicken at Oak + Cru, stuffed with BC mushrooms, served with spinach, apple and herb bread pudding, farm veg, and grainy mustard demi, is a favorite. At Summerhill, I love the 8oz Heritage Angus Flat Iron. It’s served on a bed of roasted fingerling potatoes and local vegetables, topped with garden salsa verde. Edited by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie

2

Hockey. I am a big hockey nut - I have tickets to the Canucks and also try and get to the Rocket’s games. Here at the dealership we have a fantasy draft every season.

3

Waterfront Boardwalk. My wife Trina is big on going for walks, taking in the beautiful weather. Downtown around the boardwalk is one of our favorite places.

4

Scenic Drives. I go back and forth to our other dealership in Maple Ridge a lot, and the scenery along the Coquihalla is just fantastic. The drive from Kelowna to Penticton is also a really nice little drive. I just love the scenery.

56

Kids’ Activities. Our seven year old, Logan, keeps us busy. There are so many great summer camps for kids in the Okanagan, like Cat.Chat and Green Bay Bible Camp, which are both faith-based. There are also sporting camps, or he can go to the Kelowna art gallery and paint and do crafts.

Local Red Wine. We usually have 10-11 bottles on hand at any time. We really like Summerhill’s ‘Alive’ red, or their organic Merlot, which is part of the Robert Bateman ‘Get To Know’ series.

8 14

Okanagan Weather. The weather here is a treat. We move here from Sherwood Park seven years ago, so we were used to winters of -30°.

www.iconokanagan.com

12

Nature’s Fare. We tend to do all our shopping here. You can often find us having a snack at their bistro, or shopping their organic section – I like their Broccoli and Cranberry Salad a lot. We buy a great cheese there as well – Jerseyland Organic.

After Dinner Drinks. I love to finish a meal with either a Blueberry Tea or Sambuca and Peppermint Tea. Oak + Crew and Raudz both do great ones.

Kettle Valley. We live in Kettle Valley, and it’s a great community. We can be really active with Logan, and there are lots of young families up there.

Antico Pizza Napoletana. My son loves pizza so we go here whenever we are downtown. It’s an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria.

7 13

True Grain Bread Ltd. When we are doing the Penticton drive, we always go in to Summerland and grab some bread from True Grain.

9

10

MacDermott’s on Bernard. I really like those guys. I buy most of my clothes there. For casual wear I really like Tony Bahama and Robert Graham.

Fall 2016

T-Bones Fresh Meal Market on Lakeshore. I’m really excited about the new T-Bones steak place opening in the Upper Mission. We haven’t had anything like it that close to us before.

15

Downtown Kelowna. I really like the downtown waterfront area. I love all the music and activities going on. It’s a great place to walk around.

Buy Direct started in September 2012 and has become the largest used car operation in the Okanagan with over 300 used vehicles on display.

President John Kot says, “We found the used car market lacking in the Okanagan area and Buy Direct has filled a significant void. We are very excited to satisfy this need and continue to provide great service to our customers.” Buy Direct started in September 2012 as mainly a truck store but in mid-2013 their inventory grew to include commercial models, cars, vans, and sport utility vehicles. They now have

All vehicles are always clearly priced on the lot as well as on their website. One of the things Kot has expressed as a key to their success is that, “Customers want transparency when they come to a used dealership. The bottom line is that they want selection and the best prices. We pride ourselves in being able to deliver both every time.” In concert with Kelowna Hyundai, Buy Direct donated $100,000 towards the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre in 2015 and they have a yearly campaign to continue to raise more money for them to buy additional medical equipment. Kot says, “Giving back to the community we live in, and to the residents who have supported us, is important to everyone on the team and something we feel very proud about.” Their passion for providing the best customer experience and quality used vehicles, makes Buy Direct Truck Centre an essential stop when looking for your next vehicle.
