PUBLISHER’S LETTER Wintertime ... It is either right before Christmas, and the New Year is approaching, or you have already celebrated the transition into 2017. Either way welcome to the Winter Edition of Icon Okanagan. Yes, that was another year. And I can’t believe I say this (as it sounds like my parents) but time just flies. It is three months since I last wrote the Publisher’s Letter, and a lot has happened in the world and right here, in our Okanagan Valley. We usually slow down a bit in these colder months of the year, spend more precious time with our friends and families, and hopefully experience the beauty of the wintertime to the fullest.

Terry Armstrong

Olaf Robrecht

This time we bring you a special about new cars, SUVs and trucks. A lot of us are looking into a new vehicle this time of the year, let’s hope our Editor’s Pick makes things a bit easier for you. And although we have called this special “Iconic Motoring” there will be another stand-alone magazine around April that will be filled with some of the coolest cars and trucks in the valley. So, car enthusiasts, stay tuned! There’s another very cool project we are working on, but we can’t give you too many details at this point ... but we should be able to fill you in very soon. Ok, enough for this time - Enjoy reading the magazine, the wintertime, and see you around!

The area offers so much for winter enthusiasts, from downhill skiing to snowboarding, cross-country skiing, sledding, skating to the more adventurous heli-skiing. Kelowna Community Theatre November 14th, 2016 Jesse Cook has a dedicated fan base, filling the Kelowna Community Theatre on a Monday night, Nov 14th. Jesse had his breakthrough at the 1995 Catalina Jazz Festival in California and is now a multi-award winning Canadian Superstar even opening for the likes of B.B King and Ray Charles, although still sometimes referred to as “That Flamenco Guy”. Jesse’s guitar stylings are much more wide ranging, as reflected in his new release “One World” featuring songs like Taxi Brazil, Steampunk Rickshaw and the awesome Bombay Slam, which he previewed for us. “My musical style is now more of a fusion; I am trying to find out what happens when you mix it all together” says Jesse. The band was amazingly energetic and rhythmic with violin, accordion, drum and bass presenting each song differently with clapping, stomps, various percussions, drums, looping pedal, Andalusian flute and accordion! Sprinkled with audience participation and humor, it was an unforgettable night exploring the constantly evolving “One World” of beautiful music.

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

10 Things Every Gentleman MUST Experience “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” - Eleanor Roosevelt In the journey that is our lives as gentlemen there are simply things that one must experience. When we look back on our lives, we certainly want to be proud of what we have done, and we want to believe we really lived to the fullest. The obvious list of experiencing true love, discovering our purpose, or raising a child is great, but this list is more specific, lighter and perhaps a bit easier to complete! Start checking these off your list as soon as possible: •

14

Get a Shave from a real barber – There is something intriguing and classic about a man holding a sharp razor against your neck, and for some reason you just feel connected to the essence of being an old-school gentleman.

Drive an exotic car – we may not all be able to purchase one of these manhood-confirming machines, but it is an absolute must that at some point in your life, you get behind the wheel of one. The feeling of getting pulled back in your seat while the engine screams can elicit an amazing visceral experience.

Get fitted for a custom tailored suit – This one might cost the most of all the items on the list, but the feeling of a suit that was custom made for only you is worth every penny.

Catch a wave – Surfing is not easy. All I can say is that if you commit to going to a surf spot, renting a board (maybe taking a lesson), and giving it your all, in the moment when you catch your first wave you will “get it.” To conquer even that sliver of the awesome power of the ocean is unlike any other feeling. Trust me…do it.

Go to an NFL game – I should say that a college football game would also compare if not trump a professional one. Either way, if you want to experience intense energy and a great show, being at a live football game surrounded by tens of thousands of fans is the way. (note: I would have said European football, but my personal bias and loathing of “diving” forced me to leave it out…Sorry.)

Have your shoes shined – if you don’t have shoes that can be shined, then put this magazine down immediately. There was once a great time when men were proud to have perfectly polished penny loafers (alliteration…you’re welcome)

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Winter 2017

Take a cross country road trip – Whether it’s a VW van or 5 star hotels the whole way, one can only be complete when he has experienced his home land to the fullest. From food and culture to nature and architecture, experiencing all that Canada has to offer will make you a better man.

Run a marathon – It is just you out there, suffering, with only your thoughts to push you or stop you. When you’re finished, you are have truly accomplished something primal and great in multiple ways.

Attend an outdoor music festival – Obviously music performed live is how it was meant to be heard. Even if you aren’t one of the people who need drugs to create a reality that allows them to find enjoyment in their generally sad lives, you can have the experience of a lifetime at many of the big music festivals. Watching an artist perform in front of a sea of people who are hanging on every note is an epic feeling.

Jump out of a plane – Assuming you choose to use a parachute for this, you can take your mind to the limits of its fear and life preserving instincts by simply looking out the open door of a perfectly good airplane. That leap goes against every survival instinct we have, and the exhilaration of ignoring it can be fundamentally transformative.

Eleanor Roosevelt said “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” The experiences we accumulate when we aren’t on our phones or watching TV are truly the seasoning that gives our life flavour. We are charged with making it as delicious as we possibly can.

Enjoy The Snow In A Whole New Way! A TIMBERSLED SYSTEM IS A SNOW BIKE CONVERSION KIT THAT ALLOWS YOU TO CONVERT YOUR BIKE FROM DIRT TO SNOW AND BACK AGAIN. Idaho-based Timbersled developed

the world's first snow bike kit for mountain riding six years ago, using its expertise in making snowmobile suspension parts to create a front ski and rear suspension paddle track that will replace the front and rear tires of a dirt bike in under three hours. The resulting vehicle is about 200 pounds lighter than a snowmobile, stands upright without a kickstand and effortlessly weaves between ravines and pine trees. Timbersled systems fit a wide range of modern motocross and off-road dirt bikes from the early 90’s to today and includes a front ski and a rear track system that replace the tires on your bike to allow you to ride all

year. Timbersled systems are universal and require an Install Kit that is motorcycle specific. The Timbersled can handle anything your powder-filled imagination can throw at it. The 120/137 track and 10" Backcountry ski provide uncompromising stability and efficient traction through all snow conditions.

SIDEWINDER

The 2017 YAMAHA M-TX With over 200hp, the M-TX SE has the highest horsepower to weight ratio in the mountains. Its Genesis Turbo engine maintains power as the altitude increases, widening the gap to our competitors as it climbs. Narrow, 36 inch ski stance, special mountain spindles and geometry are complemented with new Yamaha Mountain skis. A lightweight 3.0x 162 inch Power Claw track wrapped around an air sprung mountain skid frame provides ample flotation. The Genesis Turbo has a revised oil delivery system to handle extreme angles and operation. The massive horsepower is transferred reliably through an all new Yamaha YSRC clutch system. The Yamaha engineered turbo design with Mitsubishi engine management system ensures instant throttle response in all conditions.

The Okanagan Rail Trail. 1 metre at a time! SiIt has been called a health and wellness trail by 95 year old Rosalie Worbets. It’s on her bucket list to see it completed while she is still able to walk it. The Okanagan Rail Trail is on it’s way to becoming an Okanagan legacy, joining communities together with nature, culture and recreation, while providing an economic boost to the area. Starting in Kelowna and ending in Coldstream, the trail travels along the spectacular lakeshores of Duck, Wood and Kalamalka Lake, (the lake known for it’s many colours,) and then passes by many points of interest including UBCO and the airport. Donating 160 dollars builds a metre of the 48.5km trail. Worbets is donating her age in metres, and is encouraging other seniors to do the same. Fundraising for the trail is funding the first two stages of construction which will begin this spring. This will prepare the corridor for trail construction. Fundraising will continue and the final 2 stages will be scheduled when sufficient funds are raised. The engineered compacted trail surface will create a rideable and walkable surface suitable for bikes, wheel chairs and strollers. Donna Ferguson is a 70 year old who is looking forward to the trail completion. “I will be thrilled when it is finished. I think it will be a fabulous asset to the area. It will be nice to have a designated area to walk and to cycle, that is accessible for all ages and abilities and away from traffic.” She echoes Worbets in saying, “We have a chance to develop it and I believe the enjoyment that locals will get from it will be astronomical. The trail is an asset expected to bring in 6.7-10 million annually to local economies. There is much enthusiasm to see the trail completed and so fundraising initiatives have sprung from all sectors of the community. Recreational groups are organizing fundraisers, private donors and businesses are stepping forward with matching funds campaigns and individuals are donating. Lisa Heidt, an ER doctor and runner, plans on using the trail for long runs, while her kids can safely bike ahead. Working in healthcare, Heidt sees the benefit of the trail to many. “Having a low grade trail will encourage physical activity in a beautiful, safe, and accessible environment.” With both parents and grandparents living in Vernon, Heidt can have four generations on the trail at one time. “Whether it be families with young children, competitive athletes, or our active seniors population, the rail trail will provide a wonderful place for multiple generations to walk, run, and bike together,” says Heidt. Detailed information on the trail, the stages of development and how to donate can be found on the website. www.okanaganrailtrail.ca

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE Against All Odds...

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is the world’s first premium compact SUV/ COV convertible - and as weird as it may sound .. it works. We mean - it looks good. With the top up it retains the shape of the Evoque, and with its top down it actually does look predictably fantastic. We can definitely see a niche here. Let’s wait and see ... but we wouldn’t be surprised to see other brands follow the trend.

PORSCHE PANAMERA Courage changes everything.

You can already admire it at the dealerships - the new second generation Porsche Panamera. Gone is the ugly and bulbous hunchback, the longer wheelbase and a new and lower roofline gives the second generation a stylish stretched Porsche 911 look. And the cabin, finally it is clean. Yes, there’s still lots of gadgetry, but it is cleanly integrated. All the anlog buttons on the centre console have been replaced by touch-sensitive ones, and a 12.3” touchscreen blends into the horizontal strip of trim on the dash. You can choose between the Panamera 4S powered by a 440-hp, 2.9-liter V-6 and the Turbo with a 550-hp, 4.0-liter V-8.

LEXUS RX Bringing style into sharp focus

The most popular line in the Lexus stable gets more standard safety features and new smartphone integration for 2017. Clearly targeting younger buyers with a sportier look that incorporates more expressive styling, starting with its gaping, spindle-shaped grille, the RX is a bestseller in its class. For 2017, this five-passenger SUV returns as the RX 350 with a 3.5-liter gas V-6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission and as the RX 450h hybrid with a continuously variable automatic transmission and electric motors. Available with Executive and F SPORT packages.

SUBARU IMPREZA The Sports Saloon

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Retractable Fastback (RF) combines a power-retractable targa top with a gorgeous fastback roofline. The power-folding targa top operates like the Porsche 911 Targa’s intricate roof in concept; two roof panels over the occupants’ heads fold while the rear window lowers itself behind the seats and the two flying-buttress supports lift up to accommodate the folded top. 155 hp, 148 lb. ft. torque, SKYACTIV-G 2.0 L inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve.

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER Make the miles count

Mitsubishi’s compact SUV just got a major redesign that includes a new front fascia, a redesigned bumper, and some sharper rear styling. The Outlander is equipped with a 166-hp, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and a CVT-8 transmission or a 224-hp three-litre V6 engine. Inside it received a refreshed cabin with soft touch materials, a new steering wheel and a new navigation/multimedia system.

MERCEDES GLC COUPE The Sporty Soul Within

The GLC-Class Coupe is an all-new model, based on the regular GLC-Class but with a sloping roof that gives it the profile of a coupe. Slightly elongated and lowered, it now shares the group of BMW X4s and X6s, as well as the MercedesBenz GLE-Class Coupe. Under the hood a 4 cylinder 1,991cc 16V turbocharged delivers 273 lb-ft of torque from just 1,300 rpm. For some more fun pick the AMG GLC43, which comes with a 367 PS 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine, shortened shift times to accelerate in 4.9 seconds to 100 km/h and some neat styling features on the exterior and interior.

VW TIGUAN Your new best friend ...

SHIFT INTO WINTER!

Conditions change. Slow down, and be prepared.

Driving in winter weather - snow, ice, wet and cold - creates a great challenge for vehicles and drivers. Slippery roads and decreased visibility can make driving in Canadian winters a challenge. The most important thing is to keep your vehicle in good technical condition to reduce your overall chances for any mishap or disaster. At CIC we will give your your vehicle a complete checkup and prepare it for the months ahead. But there are several things you should can do yourself to be prepared. SLOW DOWN! Yes, simple as that! Fog, black ice, slush or snow-covered roads can make driving dangerous. Drive slowly and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.

WINDSHIELD FLUID! Nothing worse in winter than to run out of windshield fluid. Carry an extra jug in the vehicle and make sure that the fluid is rated in the -40C temperature range. Replace windshield wipers that streak.

WINTER TIRES! Duh! That’s another obvious one, yet people still think that “good summers” or “all-seasons” will be just fine. They are not! Traction is the key to good movement, turning and stopping on wet, slushy or icy surfaces. And winter tires provide additional traction. At CIC we will get you the best tires for these cold months. Just come by!

EMERGENCY KIT! No, not a survival kit, but you should have a few items in the car, and this should include some energy bars, water in plastic bottles, a blanket, a first aid kit – with seatbelt cutter, a small shovel, scraper and snowbrush, and a crank flashlight so you don’t rely on batteries.

Diesel service and performance. Although diesel engines require no ignition tune-ups and tend to last longer without major repairs than gasoline engines, they do require regular maintenance . At CIC, we specialize in diesel service and power performance for cars and trucks. Get more! If you have a Pickup in need of service or maybe you want to make it yours with more horsepower, throatier exhaust, suspension, sustom wheels or anything you desire to bring your truck to life, you will find all the means and products to make your dreams come true at CIC. With Sean Dillion leading our team and driven to fulfill all your mechanical needs he is focused on maintaining the value of your vehicle for years to come.

They could be giving you hundreds to thousands of dollars in cash today! At Premier we unlock the hidden value of your assets. We specialize in buying, selling and lending money for gold, diamonds and pre-owned luxury watches like Rolex and Breitling. It doesn’t stop there however. In fact, last month we even bought a collectable $5 bill for $250!

Open since 1995 we have been BBB A+ rated since 2002! Our staff are trained by the Gemological Institute of America (who invented the 4 C’s of diamond grading) as well as the Diamond Council of America.

Getting cash is a simple, easy and transparent process. In many cases it’s done in under 10 minutes from quote to cash in hand. Here’s how: 1. Gather your items. 2. Stop by at a time that’s convenient for you. You don’t need to book an appointment as we’re available 7 days a week. If you have a larger quantity come a little earlier so there is time to evaluate your items. 3. The assessment process is transparent and risk free. There is no obligation to sell and the quote is free. We test jewellery using state of the art X-RAY equipment. We’re the

only jewellery buyer in Kelowna with TWO X-ray testing systems and an on-site accredited diamond grader. Other items like laptops and tablets need to be charged so we can see them working. Remember – all serial numbers and identifying information need to be intact for us to look at your items. 4. We’ll make a cash offer on your items. Once you approve the offer the transaction is written up and you’ll be paid in cash immediately. Please bring a piece of valid photo identification such as a drivers license or passport. It really is that easy. From clutter to cash in as little as 10 minutes. Our store is located at 4-1980 Bredin Road, just behind Cloverdale Paints off of Springfield. 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

2017 Ram Power Wagon

Aluminum body. Steel backbone. High-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy makes the new Ford F-150 Raptor up to 500 pounds lighter than before. Combine that with its unique high-strength, reinforced, boxed high strength steel frame and you get the bestperforming, most capable Raptor yet. And given this is a Raptor we’re talking about, that’s saying a lot.

WORKS HARD. PLAYS HARD. Based on the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4x4 Crew Cab, the Power Wagon features a number of off-road-specific enhancements, including a unique suspension with more than two inches of lift, locking differentials and a 12,000-lb. winch. Go anywhere attitude, obviously standard.

Twin Turbos, 10-Speed Gearbox The twin-turbo, intercooled DOHC 24-valve high-output 3.5L EcoBoost (yes, EcoBoost!) with direct fuel injection is projected to deliver even more power than the previous 6.2L V8. A 10- speed automatic transmission with manualshifting mode sends that incredible power to all four wheels. The suspension: monstrous aluminum control arms up front, specially tuned springs, and 3.0-inch internal-bypass Fox Racing shocks in place of the old 2.5s. The interior of the new Raptor features bolstered sport seats up front with contrasting stitching. It also got a carbon-fibre treatment throughout, a contoured steering wheel and large paddle shifters. The Raptor is also available in a SuperCrew model.

“The Ram Power Wagon is an off-road, all-access pass, removing the limitations, instilling confidence and allowing owners to reach areas of recreation and lifestyle not attainable with any other pickup,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand, FCA - Global. “The 2017 Ram Power Wagon delivers to those who travel into extreme terrain, while providing the towing and payload capability required in a heavy-duty truck.” The 2017 Ram Power Wagon engineering efforts include a best-in-class 410 horsepower, 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 engine. We really like the graphics from the late 1970s for the profile. ThePower Wagon has a thick vertical stripe aft of the cab with “Power Wagon” in a large rotated font, paying tribute to an admired design from 36 years ago

Wanderlust

A HEARTFELT DEPARTURE FROM KELOWNA INT. AIRPORT It is not so much a matter of where you take your art … but where your art takes you. ‘Wanderlust’ [won-der-luhst] - German. A strong desire, a longing, a sense of being drawn to something special, like travel.

The image of the heart – the classic Valentine shape with its pleasing symmetrical form – has become ubiquitous, although its origins are obscure. It has appealed to many artists making paintings and sculptures, as well as to illustrators designing cards or other materials. So it is easy to see its appeal to Vernon-based artist Angelika Jaeger for her commission at the Kelowna Art Gallery’s satellite space at the Kelowna International Airport in the well-wishing area of departures wing, where people are saying goodbye to loved ones. “The display exhibits seven heart shaped figures that are connected by a red line acting as a metaphor for the “connectedness” between all human hearts,” explains Jaeger. “I would like the viewers to allow themselves to let the piece touch them, evoke their own emotions and experience a spiritual, spontaneous reaction, however here is my conceptualization in order to direct people’s curiosity. These carefully chosen materials act as a metaphor for the deeper meaning of these hearts.

Born in Germany, Angelika Jaeger has lived and worked as an artist in Vernon, BC since 1988. She received a BFA from the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna in 2013. www.angelikajaeger.com @ajsartportfolio images: Jessica Balfour (8); Clea Haugo (1)

MISTAKES SELLING YOUR BUSINESS WHEN

Congratulations! You have decided to sell your business and sail off into the sunset, lounge on some beach for 6 months of the year, and maybe put some miles on the Winnie. The Business Broker you just retained is going to look after everything. You can just sit back and watch your business sell and finish with a nice cheque in the bank; likely for more than you expected. Right? Not exactly. A seller’s involvement and commitment to the sale process will make or break a deal. The negotiation process can be gruelling and stressful, but, as a seller you can make this emotional rollercoaster much easier on yourself and/or your shareholders by knowing what challenges to expect. Here are Five Common Mistakes sellers make during the selling process:

1.LACK OF PREPARATION

When you sell a car you are going make sure its clean and the internal mechanics are in good working order. Your business should be treated the same. Deal with any potential “red flags” in advance of showcasing your business to a prospective buyer. Financial documentation, leases, staffing, and any other issues will impact the sale process. Start the preparation process at least two years before you intend to list it for sale.

2. OVERCONFIDENCE

Most sellers enter the selling process confident that they will get top dollar for their business because they believe they know what it’s worth or they already have their bottom line. A broker’s valuation of a business is based on quantifiable criteria and proven local and industry comparables. If you have an idea of business value, be sure to consider the valuation fundamentals presented by your broker and address the issues that could lead to increased value.

3. UTILIZE PROFESSIONALS

Many sellers are unwilling to hiring a business broker to facilitate the sale of their business. “I can save the commission and sell it myself”. Ok, but, consider that business brokers are capable of adding at least 10-20 percent to the sales price due to their confidential professional process and business networks. Be sure to leverage the expertise of professionals to ensure a smooth selling process that fetches top dollar for your business.

46

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Winter 2017

4. PRE-QUALIFICATION ISSUES

Pre-qualification of potential buyers is essential for a business sale. This weeds out the “tire kickers” to ensure only serious buyers are inquiring and protects sensitive information about your company. Confidentiality agreements, Non-Disclosure agreements, and financial background information are standard requirements for prospective buyers interested in viewing any information about your business; even the name and location.

5. PRICING PROBLEMS

Price is the single most important factor in determining when your business sells. Buyers have their own formula for determining value as well. Price your business too high and you may miss out on the perfect buyer or it may sit on the market too long. Take the time to come up with a price that the market will bear and one that can be defended when negotiating terms and conditions during the sale process.

6. CASH OFFERS ONLY

Cash only deals in todays marketplace are few. Today’s buyers are more likely to need concessions in the form of seller financing and/or bank financing. As a seller, there may be a large tax advantage for spreading the sale price over installments or even years. Consult your accountant ahead of time and be prepared for a remuneration package; not just cash in the bank.

7. RESPECTING CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality is the most important aspect of selling business. Knowledge of your business sale in the public domain could adversely affect many aspects of your operation including sales, relationships with your staff, creditor worry, supplier terms, etc. A good business broker will market your business

and maintain strict confidentiality. You have worked hard to build you business. Don’t let confidentiality breach reduce the value during the sale process.

8. TRANSITION FAILURE

The buyer of your business will insist on the you remaining in the picture to facilitate the transition. This could be a few days or a few months. The expectation is that the seller will help train the new owner, meet customers, and work through a month end. Few buyers prefer a clean break with zero transition time. Be sure the transition time is discussed and an arrangement is made during negotiations. When employing the help of a business broker, be sure to remember that it’s a team approach to getting top dollar for your business. Professional Business Brokers understand this process and will tailor a sale package for each unique business. Don’t leave your next big business decision up to chance. Prepare for your sale and expect to be involved in the selling process.

HOW TO

For most homeowners, replacing your household furniture is both fun and challenging. Buying new furniture offers a great opportunity to change the ambiance in your home and create an entirely new style. But if you’re not sure where to start or how to incorporate family heirlooms into an entirely new design, replacing your furniture can be stressful. Here are just a few ways that you can create the home of your dreams – without the headaches. How to Tell When It’s Time for a Change There are a few different events that can signal a need for a change of furniture. Some of them are fairly straightforward – for instance, if you’re downsizing to a smaller house and need smaller furniture – but some aren’t so obvious. You’ll know that it’s time to swap out your furniture if you feel bored with it, if your home feels tired, or if you’ve done a recent renovation and your furniture no longer looks at home in the new space. Start With Your Personality First and foremost, the best way to make sure you’re choosing the right furniture

DETERMINE WHEN IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR CURRENT FURNITURE - AND WHERE TO START

for your home is to ensure that the furniture and décor design matches your personality. When you walk into a furniture store, talk to the sales associates about what your end game is – are you trying to create a postmodern artsy loft vibe, or a traditional rustic atmosphere? The Right Kind of Wood Makes All the Difference

Most homeowners replace their furniture every 7 years, but furniture trends change far more often. It’s not always easy to keep up with the trends, but it’s often less about the style and more about the wood. Replacing your old oak wood furniture with dark-stained maple can give your home a modern and trendy look. Here at Fanny’s Furniture, we offer a wide array of maple furniture with over 12 different stain colours. For those looking for the older style, we still carry oak pieces, and can custom craft furniture in nearly any colour, style, or size. Contact Fanny’s Furniture today to learn more.

Step 1: Assess the damage. It can be difficult to get organized without first taking inventory of your home. Go through all of the rooms in the house and decide what your goals for each room are, jotting those goals down as you go. See if the rooms have more storage potential than you’re utilizing, particularly those rooms that are overrun with items. Storage can include shelves on walls, new furniture or modified closet spaces. Again, jot down your ideas so you can refer back to them later on.

Fine original art since 1984 Featuring Cory Fuhr, Julia Hargreaves and Madison Hart

Step 2: Set up a sorting plan. Organizing may involve sorting through belongings and getting rid of things you no longer use. One of the easier ways to handle sorting is to purchase three different containers or make three different piles. The first one will hold items you will keep, the second includes items that can be sold or donated and the last will house items that you will discard or recycle. Separating belongings in this manner can help you stay on task and remove some of the stress from getting organized. Simply move the containers that are no longer needed from the room when you’re ready to organize the remaining belongings. Step 3: Schedule your cleaning days. It may take a couple of sessions to get certain rooms clean, so plan ahead for that. For example, you may need a day to sort and toss items, another day to prep the room with organizational enhancements and yet another to put everything back. Separating tasks into manageable sessions will help you reach smaller goals that eventually add up to your larger goal of getting more organized. Plan project days when you can devote time with few, if any, distractions. You may want to ask a friend or family member to take care of your children or pets for a few hours while you are tackling your tasks. Organizing around the trash pickup schedule can help, too. This way discarded items are quickly out of sight and out of mind.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED!

Step 4: Prepare your day. Have all of your necessary equipment on hand in advance of Day 1. This eliminates having to go on the search for supplies, which can prove distracting. Make sure you are well rested and have eaten a hearty meal. Set an alarm for how long you want the organizational session to go. If you work until you reach the point of fatigue, you may not be inclined to finish on another day. Step 5: Reward yourself. Every time you finish an organizational session or goal, treat yourself to something nice, such as a dinner out or a massage. Choose something relaxing that makes you happy. Step 6: Repeat the process. When one room is organized, establish your plan for the next room. Once you see the success that comes from the first room, you can use that as motivation to do the others at your own pace.

1 2

Roger Hodgson, one of the most gifted composers, songwriters and lyricists of our time.

3

The charismatic co-founder of the progressive rock band Supertramp, he returned to Kelowna after nearly ten years to deliver a playlist of his forty year musical history. Almost 2000 people filled Prospera Place to enjoy two hours of Supertramp hits as well as some solo works.

4

Roger Hodgson was the singer-songwriter of the classic hits “Dreamer,” “Breakfast in America,” “Give a Little Bit,” “The Logical Song,” “Take The Long Way Home,” “It’s Raining Again,” “Fool’s Overture,”and more! His songs have stood the test of time, as has his remarkable voice and musicianship whether playing keyboard, piano or a 12 string guitar. Born in Portsmouth, England, Roger recorded his first studio single after his final boarding school year with a session band that included pianist Reg Dwight, later to become known as Elton John. The first “Supertramp” album was released in 1970. Hodgson left Supertramp in ‘83 for a simpler life, raising children, playing solo, then joining Ringo Starr in his All Starr Band. Currently, Roger is touring worldwide and continues to compose music and write lyrics. 1) David-James, Keertana, Jonathan, Dylan, Liz, Mark, (front) Avery and Zahra 2) Melanie and Danny Addis 3) Barb Samuel and Wendy McIntyre 4) Rob Collins and Colette Kuemper 5) Brady and Laurie Ives 6) Dean and Nicky Gawdun 7) Linda Schmoll and Lora Roberts

CITY FURNITURE IS THE SLEEP EXPERT Buying a new mattress is something that may seem simple, but without the right approach, you may find yourself buying something that doesn’t give you the good night’s sleep you deserve. The right mattress will give you the support and comfort you need to sleep deeply – but the wrong mattress could have you tossing and turning every night. Here are a few ways that you can choose a mattress that you won’t lose sleep over. Price Doesn’t Matter – Comfort Does When it comes to mattress shopping, it’s often tempting to buy the most expensive model to ensure you get the highest quality – but the most expensive mattress may not be the right mattress for you. It’s also tempting to try to get a great deal by shopping online, but without trying a mattress in-person, it’s impossible to tell whether it’ll work for you. Instead, come to our City Mattress gallery and try a variety of mattresses for 5 to 10 minutes each. Couples – Find a Mattress You Can Both Live With If you have a partner, you’ll want to ensure that the two

of you go mattress shopping together. You will each have your own individual sleep styles and comfort needs, which means you’ll have to work together to find a mattress that works for both of you. You’ll also want to ensure that you replace your mattress once every 8 to 10 years – wait any longer, and the foam and springs in your mattress will wear out and cause you pain. Find a Retailer with Great Customer Support The ideal mattress store will have not only all the top name brands like Simmons, Sealy, Serta, Temper Pedic and Restwell but also a great customer support process and a variety of product options. Here at City Furniture, we provide over 50 mattress models, as well as interestfree financing, same-day pickup, and fast delivery – so you don’t end up waiting for a mattress you need now. City Furniture can help you find the mattress that works for you. Contact City Furniture today or visit our retail location on Bering Road in West Kelowna to learn more.

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

KRIPPS Justin Canadian Bobsledder

Interview: Rick Maddison

“F$%& it, I’m gonna be a bobsledder and I’m going to be the best there is.”

Present state of mind? Relaxed. We just came off a busy week of sled testing and went right into a North America’s Cup race. We have a week to focus on physical training now while our sleds get transported to Whistler for the first World Cup race of the season. What are your personal goals this year? Move my team’s world rank up into the top three and reach the podium at world championships this season. Hardest part of you’re training? The mental aspect of having to be very sharp every day to improve my lines down the track. What would people be surprised to know about you? I was born in Hawaii and didn’t see snow or ice until I was a teenager. What part of bobsledding is the most thrilling/frightening? The narrow margin for error at high speeds makes it both thrilling and frightening at times. One of the crazy things people don’t know about bobsleigh is that when we go to a new track we study the corners and decide on our driving lines and then just bomb down the track full speed and hope we figure it out as we go. There’s no easing into it. Can you describe the difference between brakeman and pilot? The Pilot sits in the front of the sled and has a steering system to navigate the sled down the track. Brakeman is a blanket term for all the athletes that aren’t pilots, more accurately they could be called “push athletes” because accelerating the sled as fast as they can at the start of

the run is their main job. The guy at the very back does actually have brakes he controls, but they can’t be used until you cross the finish line, they are only there to slow it down after the run is finished. Who is the most interesting Olympian you’ve ever met and why? Alexandra Duckworth. She’s a badass snowboarder and the first time I met her she walked into the athlete lounge in Sochi, looked at me and said “Are you Justin Kripps? My mom used to hook up with your dad when they were hippies.” It was pretty hilarious and we keep in touch now as if we’re long lost siblings. Describe the moment you decided to do what you do? The moments I decided to be a bobsledder captures my personality pretty well. I was lying down on the floor of my parents living room in the middle of summer in Summerland after being invited to spend the winter bobsledding in Europe with the National development team. I had two options: head back to school in Vancouver or go all over Western Europe to blast down ice chutes all winter. I remember getting up and saying out loud, “F$%& it, I’m gonna be a bobsledder and I’m going to be the best there is.” My parents were’t overly thrilled at first, but a few months later I managed to qualify as a brakeman for World Championships in Switzerland. Have you ever thought of quitting? If so what brought you back out of your funk? I’ve thought about it many times, there are a lot of things that get put on hold to pursue a dream like this. I always get lifted out of the funk the same way: I bring Winter 2017

myself back into the present, I lift my head up, look around, and realize that I make a living basically tobogganing all over the world and get to represent my country on the highest level doing it. Tell readers about the proudest moment of being Canadian? It was this crazy moment at the Sochi Winter Olympics during opening ceremonies. The Russian crowd was pretty sullen, they were quite silent as all the nations walked in, but they absolutely went nuts for two countries: Russia, of course, but Canada as well. It was pretty cool to be a part of and it made me remember that no matter where we go Canadians are loved and respected, we see it all the time when we’re travelling and it’s a really awesome feeling. I know you’re selling shirts online is that the best way people can help you? Picking up a shirt from www.teechip. com/kripps is a great way to help out. I also have a few decal spots left on our sled for new sponsors. We focus on building a relationship with our sponsors, but one of the cool perks is you get a sticker on our race sled that’s seen all over the world! I love having new people join in on my journey!

Woohoo! 2017 marks the 150th year of Canada’s Confederation, so there is no better time to explore our big, beautiful, friendly country from East to West. “Historic cities of Eastern Canada” by Globus Tours is one great option to see some highlights of our country. You will visit the CN Tower in Toronto, feel the mist and hear the thunder of Niagara Falls on a boat cruise, enjoy a wine tour, and taste maple syrup at a sugar shack. The departure date of June 26th is the one to pick, as this tour date gives you one more night in Ottawa, and more time to enjoy beavertails! Totally Canadian eh!

Africa

In Kenya, the annual migration of hundreds and thousands of zebra and wildebeest is one of the greatest natural shows on earth. Africa has thrilling big game drives, old-world vineyards, sand dunes, thundering waterfalls, diverse tribal groups, and exceptional cuisine. If you are up for a personal challenge, there are small group tours available, where you can climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro means “shining mountain” in Swahili, and is the world’s highest free standing mountain. A climb to the top, where the sky kisses the clouds, gives you some serious bragging rights! After your climb, you can do a Tanzania safari extension, to see wildebeests, black rhinos, hyenas, lions, elephants and more! In Uganda and Rwanda, imagine trekking for silverback gorillas! It is a humbling and sometimes even a spiritual experience to encounter a full- grown gorilla in the wild. An adult silverback is king of the rainforest, and there are less than 700 mountain gorillas left in the world. The males can weigh between 170 – 240 kg and can be as tall as 1.7 meters. Nothing prepares you emotionally for the moment when you look in the eyes of these intelligent great apes in the rugged forest. Africa is life changing!

Crystal, Ashford Castle, kissing the Blarney stone, and of course Guinness! Land tour companies like CIE Tours, Insight Vacations, Trafalgar and Globus all have great itineraries to explore this area, and cruise ships sail around Ireland as well. Ireland has increased in popularity since the opening scenes of Star Wars episode VIII were shot in Country Kerry. There is a jagged rock off the coast of Country Kerry called Skellig Michael, that is home to a 1400-year-old monastery, which is Luke Skywalker’s hideout in the movie. It is a very picturesque location, and before you visit, you can buy a t-shirt that says “May the Craic be with you.”

Alaska

Renowned for its stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and glaciers that can bubble, snap, and crackle, Alaska is great destination for the whole family. One of the best ways to see Alaska is by cruising. Cruises are seasonal, and take place between late April and mid-September. It is also very popular to add on a land package or rail tour, when doing an Alaska cruise. Denali National Park and McKinley National land extensions, will give you more time to experience local culture, cuisine, give you time to learn about the history of the area, and see more wildlife. There are brown and black bears, salmon, moose, mountain goats, seals, sea lions, porpoises, bald eagles, and whales. We went on a whale watching excursion, and were treated to a fantastic show of whales breaching, and saw humpback whales bubble feeding which was amazing! After your cruise, a wonderful option is to add on the award winning Rocky Mountaineer train trip, from Vancouver through the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Plan for it, and end up in Calgary for the Stampede. Yeeha! Other travel trends for 2017 include Cuba, Italy, Croatia, Thailand, Japan, and Egypt. Whatever your dreams are for your next vacation, Greg and I have the expertise to help you plan a perfect, seamless vacation, allowing you to have personal journeys of discovery, and oncein-a-lifetime experiences. “Excuse me ...

I’m looking for a Unicorn, please! ”

It seems to be the rallying cry of women, looking for that one thing - the one thing that will change everything that they feel needs to be changed. While I’m sure that women look for Unicorns in other locations, a fair number end up looking for them in our shop. When it comes to bras, the Unicorn looks like the bra that is going to lift, separate, reform the breast into a different shape, eliminate all loose skin and fat, work under every outfit, be comfortable so it feels like you are wearing nothing, and magically be able to morph itself into different sizes to handle weight fluctuations bigger or smaller. Most importantly this should all be in the perfect shade that you can only find in the rainbow. Often the Unicorn can be glimpsed in the rear view mirror of time - where we always looked slimmer, firmer and so youthful we should have all been on the covers of magazines. Or better yet the Unicorn is in the future accompanying that amazing shape we’ll develop when we lose so many pounds, or re duce that stress and get some sleep. The Unicorn starts to look and sound like the pursuit of another mythical beast called perfection. Though I can come close, I have yet to be able to manifest a complete Unicorn for a client. However, I have learned the great peace and joy that can accompany accepting and celebrating the here and now. I applaud and celebrate with the women who value and care for themselves as much as the people they love and care for. I have learned from the women who recognize that change and growth may look different than their youth, yet can be even more beautiful. Women often ask me what bra I’m wearing, assuming that with a world of product available to me I must be wearing the Unicorn! My answer is always the same - I’m wearing the bra that fits my body, is beautiful and it is in a colour that makes me happy today. I try to stick to my nana’s simple advice, “Buy the best quality you can afford in Beds, Shoes and Bras - It is where we spend all our time and it can take our focus from all the good things happen to us, right now!” Bottomline: Skip the Unicorn hunt, get a professional bra fitting today! We do more than lift your spirits!

Aging, Photos & Your Real Self

by Dr. Janna Bentley

Moment of Truth

Why do people start to consider anti-aging treatment? Picture this: your friend emails you a link of their holiday photos … next thing you are signing up for a cool photo sharing app… and faced with picking your profile photo. Inner dialogue: “How about the photo from a few weeks ago – sheesh where did those tired lines come from? Scratch that… I want that favourite photo from five years ago!” It’s a “Moment of Truth.” A beloved picture of from a few years ago is a common trigger for new patients to seek out anti-aging therapies. A recent survey of 862 Canadian women revealed that 28% of women between 30-50 years felt their aging appearance didn’t match how they felt on the inside. For women in their 50’s, the number jumps to 45%. Of course, the mirror is the main “moment of truth.” 50% of women said the greatest motivator to try wrinkle-smoothing cosmetic injectable treatments is that when they looked in the mirror they noticed signs of aging. Patients gravitate to accessible, natural looking cosmetic treatments to reclaim their real self. Take a Soft Lift for example: this is a non-invasive combination of injectables, where treatment is customized to the patient’s needs.

Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm dermal filler have an excellent safety record. Since results are not permanent and there is virtually no downtime (versus a surgical face-lift), it is easy to “try” in a 15 to 30 minute appointment. Results begin immediately (takes a few days to weeks), so the results are typically very satisfying. Effectively Mainstream like Spanx The survey also clearly shows that cosmetic injectables have entered the mainstream. These treatments are doing for women what hair coloring and Spanx have done in decades past – providing an accessible beauty secret that gives natural-looking results. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (which includes Canada) reports that cosmetic injectables and fillers are the most popular non-invasive procedures and have grown 748% and 253% since 2000. In fact, 2/3 of women who currently use these treatments willingly tell their family and friends. Referrals from happy patients are common for our clinic, clearly illustrating the shift in mindset over the past fifteen years and the growing acceptance of these beauty routines as mainstream today.

Men are also hitting snooze on the aging clock. We are seeing more men turning to aesthetic cosmetic procedures. In North America there have been growth rates of 84% since 2010 for wrinkle-smoothing injectable treatments and 94% for facial fillers. Typical patients aren’t looking to make drastic changes when it comes to turning back time. The above survey (and our experience) states that 43% of women in their 30s want to look younger by 1 to 5 years; 41% of women in their 40s want to look younger by 6 to 10 years. My favourite thing to hear from our patients after a Soft Lift: “People ask me if I have been on holidays… that I am looking well rested!” Most women assume good genes are a woman’s best beauty secret. But maybe she’s enhancing her look in a way that’s so subtle, you can’t even tell – she just looks like her best self. PS: These are medical treatments: always seek out a physician-led medical cosmetic clinic with credentials and experience to ensure safe and effective results. Dr. Janna Bentley, MD, is the Medical Director of Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic, a premier cosmetic medical clinic in Kelowna, BC.

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

A New Year, A New Resolution As 2016 wraps up, some of us will have a feeling of excitement to kick off a new year - a clean slate, a fresh start, a new beginning. For others it’s just a new calendar on the wall, an influx of action at the gym, or an annoying mistake you make when writing the date for the first few weeks. I know what you’re thinking. “Do people still hang calendars? And does anyone actually still write the date?”.... But you get what I mean. With a new year comes the BIG question. The one you’ll get asked multiple times by friends and complete strangers… What’s your new year’s resolution? A NY’s resolution is not something I’ve ever stuck with. I’m that person who wants to drop ten pounds and by day five I’ve eaten two cupcakes and a poutine. Not that I can’t stick to a goal, but my goals are just too drastic. They lack simplicity, and quite frankly, they lack anything meaningful. So what if we weren’t so damn hard on ourselves? What if we put some real thought into small, yet significant changes we want to make in our lives? Does a resolution need to be so grand? Can it just be a simple change in the way we think or how we act? I asked a group of friends to put some thought into a new year’s resolution that was meaningful, unique, and attainable. Surprisingly, most people wanted to take some time to truly think about their answers and everyone responded with great ideas! Here are the top ten that resonated with me and might inspire you to sit down with a coffee and Baileys (or Baileys with coffee) to ponder your own meaningful twist on a 2017 resolution. 1. Pick one new recipe from Pinterest each week. Whether cooking solo, with a spouse, or with your kids... committing to one different meal each week and sitting down to savour it is perfect for the person who finds cooking and creating fun. Committing to a different recipe once a week will give you 52 tasty dishes you probably would not have otherwise tried. 2. Learn to be bored. We tend to be over-scheduled, over-committed, and

over-whelmed. And yet having nothing to do can be just as over-whelming as being over-scheduled. Yikes. It’s not a bad thing to putter or waste time as long as you’re happily wasting your own time. You don’t always have to win the race against the clock. Slow down. Let the kid’s doddle, let their little minds have time to be inquisitive. They deserve it, and so do we. 3. Make time to say thanks. Generally we’re good people. Usually we know when someone deserves a genuine thank you. So don’t just think it - act on it. Make a mental note to acknowledge people’s kindness. It doesn’t take long to write a note, send a text, make a call, or pop by. In emails, don’t shorten the word. If a thank you is intended to be sincere, writing “thx” defeats the purpose. 4. Play. This one is mine - I would like to spend 15 minutes actually playing with my kids at least four days a week. Stop parenting and just play. If my son wants me to build some silly thing in Minecraft, I’ll do it. If I have to play air hockey after a long day of work and on an empty stomach, I will. Sadly, the dirty laundry will still be there after 15 minutes of fun. 5. Give feedback. Before giving a person or business a bad review, posting it to all 500 Facebook friends, and telling your 5 real friends, give the person the opportunity to learn and make it right. Let’s not forget we’re all human and we goof up. Side story: I’ll never forget the man who once told my boss that I should be fired because my radio voice was so bad. Well, I met that man for coffee – he had no idea it was me on the radio ads, and after an hour of lovely conversation I said “now do you still want me to be fired?” We be too quick to judge at times. 6. Re-learn to really want something. In a world of instant gratification, when you want those new leather boots or latest and greatest iPhone whatever... instead of blowing the cash in a spur of the moment transaction or charging it to the credit card, try saving up for it. You might actually find that after a few weeks of sitting on the cash, the excitement has dwindled and your TFS account still has more than $0.42 cents in it. Winter 2017

7. Choose to be happy. Or not. Yep, everyone has bad days, we can be miserable and crabby or silly and happy - but choosing to take responsibility for it takes practice. It’s much easier to blame others or take it out on a spouse, but the quicker we just admit it’s a crappy day and own it, you’ll be surprised by the amount of people who will just laugh it off and accept your temporary foul mood. Take responsibility for your own happiness. 8. Let go of the plan. Our plan is not the only plan. It’s not even always the right plan - gasp! There is nothing worse than being in the vehicle with someone and freaking out because they didn’t go the right way. Reality check - they just didn’t go the way we thought they should go. Let go of what you aren’t in control of. Not everyone is going to do what we think they should do, when we think they should do it. 9. Take the stairs. Consciously choose to take the stairs, park a few stalls further away from the door, get up and talk instead of text, bend at the knees, sit up straight. Not everyone is cut out for the gym, don’t beat yourself up about it. Make choices that at least get you moving in the right direction. At Tim’s, get out of the car instead of sitting in the drive-thru for your coffee. There are so many ways to add motion to your day. 10. Keep someone company. Sit on the sidelines and be a friend, daughter, son, mom, dad... you get the point. Not every visit needs to be a planned production. You don’t have to love gardening to sit with mom while she has her hands in the dirt. You don’t have to know how to install flooring to visit dad while he works... and you don’t even have to have the perfect words to be someone’s perfect company. Just be present. Your resolution doesn’t have to be big. It just needs to be big to you. Be kind to yourself in 2017. Kristine Jones ~ From a Thirties Girl Twitter @whitedaisies14 Facebook: Kristine Jones One day I’ll learn that Snap Chat thing. But that can be my 2018 resolution…

Blepharoplasty UPPER AND LOWER EYELID SURGERY As with all facial plastic surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Blepharoplasty can remove the excess fat, muscle, and skin from both upper and lower eyelids. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can address the excess skin above the upper eyelid, whereas lower eyelid blepharoplasty can remove or reposition fat deposits which often give the appearance of lower lid puffiness. The results can be a refreshed appearance, with a younger, firmer eye area. Dr. Bakala might recommend planning a simultaneous forehead lift or temple lift to correct a drooping brow and smooth the forehead, or skin resurfacing to improve the fine wrinkling in the eye area.

For lower eyelid blepharoplasty Dr.Bakala will discuss the best surgical options for you. The lower eyelids usually require removal or repositioning of the fat bulges. There are different surgical techniques used to address specific problems, Dr.Bakala will discuss these with you. You may be a candidate for a transconjunctival blepharoplasty or a standard transcutaneous blepharoplasty. These approaches may be combined with procedures to tighten the lower eyelid. Sometimes lower eyelid blepharoplasty is combined with laser resurfacing to improve wrinkling; Dr. Bakala will review all the options to help you make an informed decision. All lower eyelid blepharoplasties are performed in Dr. Bakala’s private accredited surgical suite. Surgery is approximately one and half hours long with post-operative recovery of 7 to 10 days. All patients are required to have a designated driver and a responsible adult to stay with them for the first 24 hours. For both upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery, it is recommended that patients remain sedentary for the first 24 to 48 hours. This is imperative to help minimize bruising and swelling and expedite recovery. All post-operative care is provided by Dr. Bakala and he will follow your recovery closely.

For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, excess skin is removed and the fat bulges contoured. This procedure is performed by Dr.Bakala in his private accredited surgical suite located in his office. Surgery is approximately 1 hour and the patient is required to have a responsible adult drive them home (and stay with them overnight if sedation is administered). Recovery is approximately 7 to 10 days before being socially acceptable with a little make-up. Patients can generally go back to work after this time period with little bruising or swelling remaining.

Dr. Bakala has the expertise to consult with you and provide the information you require to make an informed and realistic decision, trust your face to a specialist.

DR. C. Bakala is an award winning surgeon who has been practicing in Kelowna, British Columbia since 1996. A Facial Cosmetic Head and Neck surgeon, DR. C. Bakala specializes in Facial Cosmetic surgery, head and neck reconstructive surgeries and Laser Skin Care.

Reduce and prevent signs of aging. Dr. Wes Woychuk | Physician

In my continued education as a physician, I have come to learn how hormones play such a large role in how and when we begin to feel various signs of aging, from skin laxity to joint pain.

I believe youthfulness is not all about vanity; it begins with health from within.

Hormone Replacement Therapy focuses on just that–regenerating damaged cells and preventing further aging.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

As our hormones decrease, our bodies begin to fail at carrying out processes that keep us looking and feeling healthy. We start to experience diminished libido, fatigue, aches and pains, and inflammation. We see our skin begin to weather and notice excess fat in areas that were once lean. Hormone Replacement Therapy replaces decreasing hormones to stop and prevent aging, and facilitates muscle mass to ease that bothersome knee or aching shoulder that you’ve had for years. It simply stimulates the regeneration of damaged and aged cells to renew and preserve vitality.

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

“When the weather chills you to the bone, reach for wines that will warm you up. “ Yes, it is THAT time of the year again. Cold winter weather makes us move a little bit slower, and our clothes are now layered and thicker. The food we enjoy has a denser, bigger quality to it ... and the everyday wines we drink are lush and rich, with less acidity. And, to get you through this extreme mid-winter weather, we’ve put together a selection of fuller-bodied red, white and fortified wines - the kind of wines that have texture and layers and a lot of dimension to them, in terms of aroma and taste.

2009 BLACK SAGE PIPE “We have chosen the name “Pipe” to reflect the time-honoured tradition of Port producers and the quality of this fine wine. The wine is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Partway through fermentation, the process is stopped by adding high-alcohol grain spirits, bringing the alcohol up to 1819% and leaving behind residual sugar.”

www.blacksagevineyard.ca

The Obra-Prima – Portuguese for “Masterpiece” – is a bordeaux style blend (30% Merlot, 23% Cab Franc, 30% Cab Sauv, 15% Malbec, 2% Petite Verdot). Wonderful bell pepper and black cherry notes greet your palates first impression. As you savour this wine enjoy the mocha coffee, light cedar, cherry and sweet vanilla flavours. Also take note of the hard candy flavours and the long and spicy finish. The velvety tannins make this wine perfect on its own or with grilled meats.

WHITE RUSSIAN “The Big Lebowski was onto something with this creamy coffee-flavored cocktail. A healthy dose of vodka in the mix assures that ‘the dude abides’”

imbibe THE BEST DRINKS IN THE OKANAGAN

A classic creamy cocktail, a Black Russian with the addition of cream. Served in an Old-Fashioned (or rocks) glass over ice. INGREDIENTS 1 cup of ice cubes 1 to 1½ oz (30 to 45 mL) of vodka ½ to 1½ oz (15 to 45 mL) coffee liquer Cream, half & half, or milk (to fill or top off the glass)

EASY AS 1-2-3 ... The vodka and coffee liqueur are first poured into a glass that has been filled with ice, and then the drink is topped off with cream, milk or half and half. The finished drink is usually not stirred, as the dark coffee liquer and the vodka should rest on the bottom of the glass below the milk or half and half.

the last word...

What We Love About The Okanagan

Insider information is everything. This issue we speak to Dale Gehring, owner of Landmark Clothiers, about some of his favourite things in the Okanagan.

1

Sparkling Hill: My wife and I love sp ending two or three days going to Sparkling Hill. We love the spa. I prefer steams and l also love saunas, but I love the diversity of treatments that are on offer. Afterwards you can go to the chill out room, go into the pool, then have dinner later at the restaurant. It’s always good.

Lake Country Wine Trail: On our way back from Sparkling Hill, we love to drive through the valley and through Okanagan Centre, hitting wineries along the way. We stop at Ex Nihilo, and we often stop at Grey Monk for lunch.

Old Vines Restaurant at Quail’s Gate: Quail’s Gate is our hang out, and our favourite restaurant is Old Vines. When we have reps come through from Canada and Europe, that’s where we go. We do a nice wine tasting, and they always love the excellent food – the chef is always bang on and consistent. My favourite red wine there is the Old Vines Foch Reserve, and my favourite white is the Chasselas.

Art Knapp: My wife loves flowers and plants, so Art Knapp’s is my ‘go to’ if I am picking something up for her.

6

Guisachan Village Centre: I go to L & D Meats and Deli, Paul’s Produce, Codfather’s Seafood Market. I love to cook, and Guisachan Village is my one stop shop.

Ice Fishing: I like to ice fish with my son-in-law, and there are so many great lakes in the area. Shannon Lake is a cool spot for ice fishing if it’s frozen, or Bear Lake.

7

Landmark Fitness: I like to work out and I use the facilities in the Landmark Buildings. There are gyms in Landmark Buildings II, III and VI, which are full-service ‘tenant only’ fitness centers for use at a nominal fee. It’s great having facilities for everyone who works in this area.

Soup for Lunch: When it’s cold, I love going to the Vietnam Village for a bowl of their pho noodle soup. O-Zeki’s is also great for their Japanese soups. The soups at Bouchons Bistro are always good as well.

Mascarenhas Luxury Creations. This is a Kelowna-based company we are carrying in the shop. The owner, Mervin, is originally from Bermuda and creates luxury pens made from woods and shells salvaged from around the world. Each pen comes in its own lined, handcarved case made from wood that has been sourced from shipwrecks. They make amazing Christmas gifts. Third Space Coffee: I like Third Space a lot. It’s a cool spot, and it’s been a real traffic driver for our store. It’s brought in a younger demographic, the fashion oriented person.

Landmark Buildings: The area around the Landmark Buildings is really becoming a village. Landmark Flowers (Kelowna’s first eco-friendly flower shop), the Xchange Tapas Bar, DunnEnzies Pizza Co and Glow Juicery have joined the more established businesses in the area like Mon Thong Thai and Third Space. The area is gaining real diversity, and I suspect it will continue to grow. The owners, the Stobers, are a really nice family who do a lot to support us.

Christmas and Ski Hills: Our grandchildren and daughter will be coming in from Copenhagen so we will be spending lots of time in Big White and Silver Star. We like snow-showing, or skating on the Big White rink.

Eye Bobs: We carry these really cool ‘readers’ in the store. We source them out of the States, and I love that these reading glasses come in fashion forward styles.

14

Bouchons Bistro: Another favourite restaurant is Bouchon. The food is always consistent, and there is a little more diversity in the dishes. It has a very ‘French bistro’ environment. They have a great three course menu, which is fresh every day. One of the dishes I like is the stewed rabbit – not many places offer that in Kelowna.

15

Okanagan Weather: I moved here 34 years ago from Medicine Hat, and it was the best move I ever made.
