With ICON Okanagan Magazine we introduce the region, the businesses, the people that call this place their home. It’s about a lifestyle we all enjoy, that attracts thousands of tourists each year. A car enthusiast and collector all my life, working in and for the industry for many years as a designer, illustrator and publisher, I was fascinated about how passionate people in this area are about their rides. And I could not believe the quality and rarity of automobiles in this rather small area. We have some of the rarest, coolest and most expensive cars in the world right here, on our doorstep! Time to honour this, and introduce them. Iconic Motoring starts as an annual publication introducing some of the coolest cars we have in the Okanagan, new car products and whatever a true automobile enthusiast loves. Yes, you may miss some of the cars you have seen at car shows, or maybe your own joy and pride, or the car your neighbour has in his garage. We know there is more, much more, out there. Let us know! Send us some pictures, we are interested to see what you have. Or publish them on our Facebook page. We are already working on the next edition!

Believe it or not, yes, we do have some car manufacturers in Canada. Maybe you remember the supercar that was introduced on Dragon’s Den a while ago? Their car, the Pléthore, gave us hope that the Maple Leaf would compete with the best out there. Unfortunately it seems that production never started. But - with the Felino and the Magnum we have two companies that are very close to production. We’ll keep an eye on them ... HTT Pléthore

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder “Gulf Edition” escribed as “the gene pool for the Porsche sports cars of the future,” the Porsche 918 Spyder is not only one of the most efficient and powerful hybrid super cars available, it is also one of the most rare; the entire production of 918 units sold out in December 2014. This particular 918 is one of only two of its kind in the world - making it highly sought after - and Iconic Motoring was the first invited to test drive one of these outstanding super cars!
On Thursday, August 17, 2015, Vaughn Wyant officially unveiled the two only “period-correct”* Gulf Livery 918 Spyders in the world! The cars are slightly different, making them a oneof-a-kind 918 experience. They were factory built and exclusively customized with approval of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG and Gulf Oil worldwide. Wyant explained, “I told Porsche Canada that if they would build me a car in true Gulf Livery colours I would buy one. In fact, I would take two.” Porsche Racing currently partners with Mobil, so Wyant knew his request would pose a tremendous (almost impossible) challenge. But, after several years of endless red tape, these re-
markable cars were built at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany and his dream became a reality. Their unveiling at Wyant’s Saskatoon Porsche dealership has begun to attract global attention. Numerous details truly set these super cars apart: silver brake calipers replaced standard acid green, custom upholstery stitching with Gulf logo embossed headrests (instead of Porsche brand) and Gulf Livery colours and emblems custom/ factory painted - to name just a few. We can’t wait to see this car again - this time in Kelowna! * period correct refers to exact match of blue and orange Gulf Livery colours to original of the 1960s and ‘70s

2006 Ford GT
When Ford unveiled the GT40 Concept car at the 2002 Auto Show in Detroit, car enthusiasts all over the world celebrated the return of a legend – the famous GT40 (Grand Touring; 40 inches height) race car from the 1960s that beat Ferrari at Le Mans and won the won the famed 24-hour race four consecutive times. And although completely redesigned and bigger, wider and taller, the new GT clearly resembles its iconic ancestor. Delivery of the first production cars started in the fall of 2004 as a 2005 model year, and ended in 2007 after 4,038 units (of which approximately 200 were destined for sale in Canada). However, the most collectible and therefore sought after model is the limited edition “Heritage” version of which only 343 have been made. he DMC-12 was the brainchild of automotive engineer John Z. DeLorean, a former executive at General Motors whose most notable contribution was the Pontiac GTO. He founded the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) in 1974.
Designed by Italian automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, and engineered by Lotus Cars of England, the DMC-12 consisted of bare stainless steel body panels, a rear-mounted 2.85 litre V-6 PRV (Peugeot/Renault/Volvo) engine, and stylish gullwing doors. Unfortunately, and due to several reasons, DMC filed for bankruptcy in 1982, and the factory was closed... just three years before the car became famous again - modified as a time machine, in the Back to the Future film trilogy. This beautiful example calls Summerland its home.

rare sight, the Campagna T-Rex is a two-seat, three-wheeled motor vehicle created by the Campagna Corporation, located in Quebec. Available since the early 1990s, the company faced some difficulties in the mid-2000s and finally sold its assets to André Morissette and David Neault. Campagna Motors now produces two to three T-Rexes a week.
Three-wheelers are nothing new ... the ones with one wheel in front, are usually used as cheap, basic working transportation cars in countries such as India. The tail-dragger layout, with the one wheel in the rear, gives more practicality - and eccentric fun. Like the old Morgan 3-Wheeler, or now ... the T-Rex! The 2015 model you see here calls Vernon its home. As far as we know there are only two T-Rex tricycles in BC, and this particular one is the “Limited Edition” with a BMW-sourced, 1.6-liter inline-six motorcycle engine driving 160 horsepower to the rear wheel. Although insured as a car, meaning you can drive it without a helmet, this street rocket is more a motorcycle than a car. It actually is about as close an experience to driving a motorcycle as a non-motorcycle rider is likely to get. You’re exposed like a motorcycle rider is, you have noises like a motorcycle...and you’re as fast as a motorcycle: The already super-fast 4 seconds it needs to get to 100 km/h feel more than 2 seconds, and believe us - you can’t wait for the next corner! If you want to find out more about this cool vehicle ... visit their website or look up Jay Leno’s videoclip about the T-Rex. He is reviewing this exact same model and it will give you a pretty good idea what this monster is all about!

The Top 10 Ultimate Watches For Petrolheads 1
The worlds of watchmaking and automobile racing have shared a strong connection for decades. Cars and timepieces share many characteristics. Think about it: Car racing is not just about speed; it encompasses high-tech mechanics, top performance, and state-of-the-art design—just like high-end watchmaking. No wonder that race- and high-performance cars often serve as a direct inspiration for watches. Good examples for this are classics such as TAG Heuer Carrera, the Rolex Daytona, or the Chopard Mille Miglia. Unfortunately, we can’t show you all the wonderful timepieces that have ties to motoring, but we have picked a list of watches, from very affordable to the ones that have the cost of a nice car, that might just be right for you.

Better Than Gold? Investing in Classic Cars
T
he classic-car market is booming. Fueled largely by well-situated baby-boomers, who want to own the restored dream of their youth, the market has rebounded from a crash just a few years ago to reach new highs. The prices of certain models are going through the roof, particularly European sports cars from the mid ‘50s and ‘60s, and at this point there is no indication that the market will soften soon. Some vintage Ferraris are in the double digit millions, and a late-1970s Porsche Turbo doubled in price in just 2 years.
well, rare racing and road versions of automobiles made by – for example – Mercedes-Benz and Maserati. Attractive models that were produced in small numbers have the highest public profile and the strongest credentials for the most exclusive events. Rare, high quality cars are most attractive for the collector. Let’s have a look at Ferrari. The name is synonymous with power, beauty, rarity, and their cars are, for most of us, unattainable. Ferrari has become one of the most recognized trade names in the world. We have picked three models: One from the ‘60s, one from the early 70s, and one from the mid-70s.

Ferrari 308/328 (1975-85)
This model might be your last chance to own a classic Ferrari that is considered to be iconic. The successor to the now out-of-reach “Dino,” the “holy grail” is the first production run which was entirely made of glass-reinforced plastic (or GRP). This lasted until June 1977, when the 308 was switched to steel bodies. If you would have bought the so-called “Vetroresina” just a few years ago, you would most likely have paid around $45,000-50,000. Today it will set you back at least $150,000. But even the regular 308s, which were available in different engine and body versions, are climbing rapidly in value. You can still get nice examples for around $60,000 but recent auction and private sales had many cars listed and sold for more than $100,000. Although we have picked Ferrari for our little historic excursion, the same applies to other European brands such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz or Aston-Martin. So now you can do your own research and try to find the perfect investment opportunity, but be warned – if you are not an expert, a lot can go wrong. You also have to look at the real numbers. Think about maintenance, storage, insurance. If you are not careful you can lose a lot of money.
FERRARI 246 GT/GTS “DINO” (1969-74) Named to honour Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari’s son and heir Dino Ferrari, the 246 was marketed at a lower, more“affordable” price capable of taking on the Porsche 911. Dino 246 production numbered 2,295 GTs and 1,274 GTSs, for a total production run of 3,569. The price skyrocketed in the last few years, with prices around $400,000 for a decent car.
All in all this is a fascinating market, but investing in collector cars is just as complex and involving as any other type of investment,. It requires knowledge, passion and patience to succeed as an owner, financially and for enjoyment. www.historicautomobilegroup.com
As so often ... it might be better to:
Ask The Experts!
The Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) Founded in 2007, this group has chosen new avenues to analyze the collectors’ market for rare classic cars. Following the motto “driven by knowledge” the approach is based on financial analysis, adjusted to the specialities of this niche collectors’ asset class. HAGI is known in the market to produce a series of indices charting the top levels of the classic car market. Updated monthly on HistoricAutoGroup.com the HAGI Top Index is published regularly by the Financial Times, in Octane magazine UK, Classic Sportscar France, die Welt online in Germany as well as Bloomberg, to name a few. The HAGI Index Group has developed their indices based on thousands of documented transactions collected from four areas: broker/dealers, marque specialists, auction results and private individuals. Five indices have been published so far: The HAGI Top 50 comprising of rare models from all marques and age periods, the 1920s to the supercars of 2000. The HAGI F and HAGI P indices, which measure the market for rare Ferrari and Porsche respectively gives followers marque specific performance as well as the HAGI ex P& F Index, which currently contains 24 car models other than Porsche and Ferrari. From 2012 HAGI added the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index MBCI.
Better Than Gold
In 2014 the HAGI team published the second edition of ‘Better Than Gold, Investing in Historic Cars’, a comprehensive book that lists many of the group’s finding, e.g. the sectors’ performance since 1980 as well as introducing the indices background, their methodologies, marques and models in detail. An extensive glossary with over 200 quality photographs of collectors’ cars lists price relevant data as well as current index constituents, all in all demonstrating many new aspects of this sector to the expert as well as making it transparent for the novice entrant and pasionate owner. Better Than Gold is a must read for anyone interested in the classic car sector. Publisher: HAGI Publishing; 2nd Revised edition edition ISBN-10: 0956864481

here are muscle cars, and then, there are muscled-up sports cars. The Cobra is considered the consummate “muscle car.” The story of this fascinating sports car begins as early as 1959 when Carol Shelby raced for Aston-Martin, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. When he got devastated by Corvettes during a race, he set off on a quest to create the best car; one that would completely demoralize its competition. Shelby, who liked the lines of the AC Cars, approached them to build a car for his purposes. He got Ford interested to supply the engines the birth of the Shelby Cobra! Today the Cobra is one of the most replicated cars in the world, many companies offer do-it-yourself kits you can build in your garage as a fatherson project. The car pictured is different: It is a factory-made replica of a 1965 427S/C (Semi/Competition ) Cobra by Superformance, the only Cobra replica built under license from Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. Many details including 15inch knock-off Halibrand wheels, functional oil cooler, period-correct leather seats, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, AC pedals, and a competition dashboard with Lucas switches and Smiths gauges, including reverse-wound speedometer, make this one of the closest Cobra replicas you will find. And with a Roush 427SR (351W) with 510 hp / 515 lb-ft, 5-speed Tremec transmission, 8.8-inch Ford IRS with Traction-Lok and 3.73 final drive, independent F/R suspension and Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes it won’t be easy to find a better performing one.

1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV
We can only imagine what the crowd at the 1971 Geneva Auto Show must have thought when one of the most iconic Italian cars of all time was first introduced to the public. Calling the Countach, designed by Marcello Gandini, “groundbreaking” would be an understatement. With its angular design, eye-catching, upward-hinged “scissor doors,” this car would become a legend. Fourteen years later, in 1985, Lamborghini introduced the third generation, the QV, named for its four valve heads (Quattrovalvole). With minor body modifications, the most prominent change was under the hood: The V12 was now fuel injected with 414 bhp (309 kW; 420 PS), rather than Weber carburetors. The beauty you see here is a “half year” U.S.-specification model that features straked sideskirts. Its original colour is black but it sure looks striking in its baby blue vinyl wrap with white accents. The wheels were painted white with blue accents to match the body colour and a brand new Quicksilver exhaust system was installed for an even deeper sound.
Countach 5000 QV Overall production: 1974–1990 2,049 produced; 5000 QV: 610 cars Engine: V12, 5167 cc with 4 valves per cylinder.

It aimed to offer Ferrari-like performance and aggressive styling at less than half the price of its Italian competitors. The pictured car is a GT5 which was first introdcued in May 1980. It had bonded and riveted-on fibreglass wheelarch extensions which gave it a very distinctive wide-body look. The Pantera GT5 also incorporated bigger brakes, a more luxurious interior, larger wheels and tires and the fiberglass body kit also included an air dam and side skirts. Production of the wide body GT5 continued until 1985, when the GT5-S replaced the GT5.

McLaren 12C
2012 MP4-12C Engine: Twin-turbo 3.8 L V8 616 bhp (459 kW; 625 PS) 7-speed dual-clutch
Provided by August Luxury Cars
I
t all started with a sensational road-going supercar, the McLaren F1 of 1992–1998, and the legacy continued with the MP4-12C. When we heard that August Luxury Motorcars had a 12C in their showroom, we simply had to get the keys and take this beauty for a spin!
Once you have opened the scissor-type doors and balanced yourself into the carbon-fiber MonoCell tub, thread your legs into the narrow footwell, the fun begins by awakening the mighty twin-turbo V-8 that sits just inches behind your shoulder blades. The acceleration is brutal, little less than 3 seconds to reach the 100 km/h mark, shifting with gun-shot quickness through simple steering wheel paddles. Cornering is fantastic, and the sound, well, you have to hear it! Let’s just say we had a big, big smile on our faces when we returned the car to the dealership. Lotto Max, here we come!

Mike’s British Repairs at Hillcrest Garage
“Providing good old fashioned service for British cars and all other brands”
Mark 2 - Full Restoration
L
ocated in the historical Hillcrest Garage in East Kelowna, a lot of us might have wondered about some old Jaguars, Triumphs and MG cars parked on either side of the street up on KLO Road.
Mike Fraser and his wife, Bronwen, bought the charming building which was built shortly after WWII) and operated as a full service garage and gasoline stop (although the tanks are now long gone) in 1999. Mike, who grew up in North Vancouver, developed a passion for Jaguar cars from a very young age. After an apprenticeship with a local Chrysler dealership, he moved to Australia where he had the opportunity to work for the Jaguar dealership. He was able to participate in the Master Technician program where, every year, the six top Jaguar technicians were sent to Sydney to compete for top
honours. It sealed Mike’s passion! Together with Brownen, he returned to British Columbia in 1996 and started what would become the “must-stop” for British car enthusiasts. Offering full maintenance services, performance enhancements, engine rebuilding all the way up to full restorations for classic British cars, combined with his passion and friendly persona — Mike is famous for his “wave” at passing motorists — Mike’s British Repairs soon had car lovers with domestics and imports stop by, wondering if the team could service their cars, too. They could, which led to the second shop, Fraser Automotive, just down the road. Here, the trained mechanics service and repair fuel-injected modern cars (and the overflow of the British). So, if you are looking for a passionate group of people to service, repair or restore your car, stop by at Mike’s! EDITION 2016

Owner: Mitch, Vernon
1948 Ford Pickup
T
his beautiful pickup was once rescued from a farmer’s field, and it took the owner 8 years to turn it into an award-winning full custom show truck. He started with rebuilding the frame and suspension. As the original frame was a u-shaped construction, it had to be totally boxed in for support and appearance. The next step was the front suspension, which was completely changed to a Mustang II suspension including the rack and pinion steering, plus disc brakes. The rear suspension and rear end were replaced with parts from a Corvette, modified to fit. The truck was also lowered, with a slight rake back to front, for the full custom look. The engine and transmission are from a 2002 Ford Lightning pickup. The truck is also equipped with air conditioning and power brakes. The body was painted top and bottom with House of Kolors Kandy Root Beer. The process involved 14 coats of paint, plus total polish top and bottom. The addition of coarse metallic produces a finish that catches the eye of everyone passing by. The use of quality stainless steel, aluminum, and chrome on the chassis is extensive and adds to the overall appearance. This is finished off by custom chrome wheels and special performance tires. The custom cab interior with its power windows and door locks is finished in beige leather, including the floor.

Engine: 454 Chevrolet Modified original chassis Custom Interior Owner: Harley, McBride
Hailing from Winnipeg, Gerry’s interest in cars started in the 1960s and while working then as a welder at CN Rail, he was able to put his skill into his passion. The starting point with all of Gerry’s cars is the high end round tube chassis. From this most important part of a custom car, countless hours are spent laying out the chassis and measuring to the smallest degree how every other aspect of the car will come together. Engine and transmission placement, how the suspension will work, how the high horsepower will be transferred to the rear wheels - magically a 1940s thru 1970s car or truck now performs to the highest performance level. Old technology underneath now replaced with the latest and yet can still convey the look of that period.
“Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports ... all others are games.” --Ernest Hemingway
Gerry’s mechanical skills then move onto the amazing interiors and paintwork. For this part Gerry has sourced out several of the valley’s most skilled craftsmen. The 1951 Ford Truck pictured was actually built 20 years ago. The current owner then recently decided to have Gerry finish it. Built on a modified original chassis and with a 454 Chevy engine, this truck is finished in a deep Candy Apple Red and comes with an interior by Lee Baxter Custom Interiors.

Life in the Fast Lane ... About racing for Porsche in Daytona, Sebring and LeMans !
K
ees Nierop, born in Purmerend, Holland, was exposed to motor sport through his father Klaas who took Kees to races in Europe before immigrating to Canada.
It was after the Nierop family settled in Kelowna that Kees, at the age of 18, attempted his first motor sport event, the Knox Mountain Hillclimb. Success never comes easily -- Nierop rolled his Datsun 240z on his way up the hill. Undaunted, Nierop repaired the car and proceeded to achieve greater success, finally winning the Canadian GT-1 Championship in 1978. It was the same year that a Formula Atlantic ride was obtained for his home track at Westwood, BC. The North American Formula Atlantic Series was still hotly contested. Gilles Villeneuve had just moved to Ferrari and the likes of Tom Gloy, Howdy Holmes, Danny Sullivan, Keke Rosberg and Jacques Villeneuve were looking for their big break. Nierop, never having driven a Formula car of any kind, qualified a remarkable sixth. Mechanical problems forced him out of the race. The next year, in ‘79, Nierop’s love affair with the Porsche marquee began when he secured a ride with the Dick Barbour Porsche 934 team for IMSA races at Portland and Road-America. Nierop again returned to the Daytona race in ‘80 in a Porsche 911, but without the desired results. For Sebring, Barbour offered the Apple Computer Porsche 935, and along with Bobby Rahal, the team brought the car home sixth. Later that year, Nierop teamed with Bob Akin in his Porsche 935 at the 6 hour race at Mosport and again a sixth place finish rewarded the crew for their efforts. For the next two seasons, 1981-82, he went to England and competed in the British Formula 3 Championship. In 1983 he returned to North America and secured a ride with WLB Racing’s 934. Perseverance was finally rewarded. The WLB Racing Team won, outright, the 12 hours of Sebring in a GTO class car -- the only time this has been done in IMSA history.
In 1984 Nierop agreed to drive the Kremer Bros. Porsche 956 at the World Endurance Championship race at Mosport. The experience of driving Turbo Porsches and a knowledge of Mosport certainly helped. Unfortunately the rough Mosport track and extreme heat caused a gearbox oil cooler failure and eventually a gearbox failure. The Sperry Porsche 956 was not counted as a finisher. In 1985, Kees ran the IMSA Daytona 24 Hours, with Bob Akin Racing 935 Turbo Porsche to a 5th place finish overall. In October he joined the Carlsen Racing team to drive the 24 hour Firehawk race to finish in 1st place overall with a Porsche 944. With Carlsen in ‘86, Kees continued to excel with the Porsche marquee. In the SCCA Escort Endurance Challenge at both Sears Point and Portland, he finished second in class. At the Nelson Ledges 24 hour, he took 4th overall, 4th in class in the Carlsen 944T and at Atlanta , back in the 944, first in class. In the Budweiser 24 hrs at Mosport, Kees was selected to drive on the same team as Al Holbert and Derek Bell in a Rothmans/ Porsche 944T. The car finished a credible 8th after spending 3/4 hour in the pits with a brake malfunction. Another highlight of the ‘86 season was the offer to share an IMSA GTP ride in the Coca-Cola Porsche 962 at Road America. In his first opportunity to race a Porsche 962, Kees finished 3rd. Interestingly enough, it was back in Canada that Kees was finally able to establish himself as such versatile young driving talent to his peers, capturing the prestigious Rothmans/ Porsche Challenge Championship. The series consisted of seven 1/2 hour sprint races in which 32 competitors drove virtually identical Porsche 944s against one another. Names like Scott Goodyear, Bill Adam, Richard Spenard, Ludwig Heimrath Sr. and Jr. were amongst the competition faced by Kees in his MCL/Field Motorsports entry. As a result of his successful competition year, Kees also has the distinction and honor of being among the top ten in a field of 150 competing for the Porsche North American Cup. EDITION 2016
In 1987 Kees was asked by Peter Falk to join the factory race team at LeMans for the 24hr race in June. Nierop was to drive one of the three Rothman’s Porsche 962 - unfortunately the car was crashed beyond repair before Nierop had a chance to drive it. The factory then switched Nierop from the 962 to the 961. In 1988 Nierop got the invitation from Cam Champion to join his team of two 944 Turbo cars to run the Canadian Rothman’s 944 Turbo Cup. He also got the invite to join Steve Saleen for 1989 to do the full season. Nierop relocated to Vancouver and got an invite from Porsche Canada to drive a 944 Turbo at the Vancouver Molson Indy, The next year he won the same race in his own 280Z. In early 2000 Kees was contacted by the late Bob Carlson from Porsche Cars North America, who invited him to join the team of past and current Porsche driving champions to instruct and showcase new Porsche models as they were being released to the public. This would see Kees at the wheel of the latest Porsches (Carrera GT, 997, 997 Turbo etc.) driving at speed at several North American racetracks. Nierop also joined Vancouver based Morrisport Advanced Driving as an instructor. Late 2008 he also joined Porsche Sport Driving School in Birmingham as an instructor. In 2007 Nierop was the driver for the Canadian entry for the TransSyberia Rally where Porsche North America had entered three Cayennes. Well, he walked away uninjured from a totally destroyed Cayenne in the middle of the Gobi dessert in Mongolia... Kees joined Bullet Racing in 2009 to do selected races with their Porsche Turbo and also teamed up with Bullet Racing and Ross Bentley for the 2010 Rolex Daytona 24hr race in a Porsche GT3 Cup car. Nierop drove across the finish line for the final time and also won the Westcoast Sportscar Championship in BC. Nierop retired in 2011 from competitive racing and has since been a full time driving instructor at driving events for Porsche.

1962 Porsche 356B “Notchback” Over the 15 year production run of the 356, Porsche continued to make running improvements. Some smaller, some more radical such as in 1959 when a new front end with more prominent, almost straight-edged fenders, more vertical headlights and a larger front bumper that was raised for more crash protection, was introduced. A very unique model called the “Karmann Hardtop” or “Notchback” 356B model was produced in 1961 and 1962. The 1961 production run was essentially a cabriolet body with the optional steel hardtop welded in place. The 1962 line was a properly dedicated design incorporating the cabriolet rear end design, the T6 coupe windshield frame, and a unique hardtop. The car in the pictures is one of the survivors of this very limited production. It has the original numbers matching engine and is in the same family for 20 years. The owner’s father restored it to its current condition and although one of the rarest 356 models it is not tucked away but enjoyed as a daily driver throughout the summer months.
Birth of a Legend - The Porsche 356 C
reated by Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, the Porsche 356 laid the foundation of the company’s iconic sports car legacy. It all started with the Porsche 356 originated from the Type 64, a pre-World War II race car. In 1948, work began on a production model that was introduced to the world in 1950. The predecessor to the iconic 911 was built in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart from 1950 to 1965. Over those 15 years, four major model types are recognized: Type 356, Type 356A, Type 356B and Type 356C.
The famous “Speedster” ... the most expensive of all 356s models these days. The Speedster is readily identified by its windshield, cut down by 3.5-inches for a more rakish look. It came with a canvas top and side curtains. Engine choices included the “normal” 1500 and 1500S.
There are two basic 356 body styles: The Coupe and the Cabriolet. The Cabriolet itself can now be categorized itself: It can be a Cabriolet, a Speedster, a Convertible or a Roadster. One final and rare oddity in the 356 saga: the Karmann Hardtop (also called the Notchback) ... of which one resides right here in Kelowna. See above ...
1963 Porsche 356B The most valuable classics are the so-called “time capsule survivors” - cars that are in excellent condition and unrestored. They are the cars that have been forgotten over the years, or that were part of a collection. The car you see here is one of those rarities and calls Enderby its home. This Porsche 356B has won the Preservation Class Carmel Concours on the Avenue 2012 and has even been used by judges as exemplary example of how 63 Coupes looked when coming out of factory! The original owner, who had purchased the car in September of 1963 for $4,700 incl. tax and license, owned it until June of 2012. He was VP of Maintenance and Construction at Disneyland in the 1960s and the original front windshield still has the original Disney sticker. He also saved all service records starting with the first at 308 miles on October 1963. The service records total 159.

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was built between 1955 and 1974 as a coupe and convertible. It combined the chassis and mechanicals of the original Beetle, a styling by the Italian carrozzeria Ghia and was hand-built by the coach-builder Karmann in Germany and Brazil. This beautiful example we see here has recently gone through a nut and bolt restoration.
My Fair Lady 1968 Datsun 2000 Introduced in late 1962, the Fairlady was built to compete head to head with the MGB. By ‘68, the Datsun was a far more technically enthralling piece than the English competitor: 150hp with the optional Solex carburetors, a five-speed gearbox, and a 7000rpm redline in a 2150lb, 90-inch wheelbase package. Tips for Vehicle Washing and Polishing
I
t’s the Great American Ritual - washing the car. For many people, the polishing of your vehicle can be one of “let’s get it over with as fast as possible.” For others, it’s a day job that includes a whole array of car care implements, including brushes, cotton swabs, a toothbrush and a collection of cleaning, conditioning and dressing products. Unless your car has been neglected for years and is almost in the need of a new paint-job, car polish today is far simpler than the old days of Turtle Wax or Simonize - literally hours to remove the “white, caked-on mess”.
This Porsche is almost 25 years old and thanks to several owners in that period who have maintained the vehicle the paint is factory original and displays showroom condition.
Today there is a wide range of cleaners, waxes, polish/sealants available that in many cases will have a vehicle done in under an hour - no machines and only minimal elbow grease required. We would like to give you some basic ideas and tips on how to clean your car, and keep it shiny.
1
THE BIG WASH 1. Pre-soak entire vehicle with water (garden hose or preferably a home power washer) to loosen the dirt. Warm or hot water works better than cold. 2. Have a bucket filled with warm water and car wash soap. Never use any kind of dish soap. Use a soft wash mitt and start on the roof and work your way down. When you have washed specific areas DO rinse these areas with fresh water to avoid soap from drying. Have a second bucket of water to clean the mitt in it. Once the body is finished, do the wheels and tires. And yes, a tire brush or tooth brush will help, depending on what type of rims you have.

ICONIC MOTORING
DEFINING THE CAR CULTURE IN THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

2
THE DRYING PROCESS
Drying the vehicle should always be a two-step process. First a “chamois” to lift the water off and (something most people never do) re-wipe the area with a DRY, soft bath towel or several micro-fibre towels. As much as you think your chamois has removed all of the water, it always leaves a slight amount or film of water. Buffing removes that completely. Just a tip - the best “chamois” on the market is called “The Absorber.” Mine is 8 years old and shows zero wear.
3
THE INSPECTION
First I like to check for any paint chips and will touch them up at this time. The polishing can consist of one to three steps. If your paint looks good you can get good results with just a polish/sealant or a wax. If your paint is showing “dull” it would be best to remove the dull or oxidized paint. Some people believe that if the vehicle is “clear-coated” from the factory you do not have to polish it. WRONG - clear-coat, no matter how many coats were applied is still paint simply put - paint without pigment or color added. It does oxidize and show dulling. 1. With a Three-Step process you would start with a Clay Bar to remove contaminants imbedded in the paint.
4
THE POLISH/ SEALANT
The last step is the Polish/Sealant or Wax. My personal choice is the Polish/Sealant over a Wax. Wax is “soft” and some is removed every time you wash your vehicle. In some cases, 3 or 4 washes will have a wax removed entirely. A simple test to judge a better quality Polish/Sealant or Wax is the size of the “water beading” on the vehicle. The smaller the bead (pin drops) the better the polish. As the beading gets larger it is telling you the Polish/Sealant/Wax is wearing off. Applying any of these products is done in small areas, i.e. roof or hood or fender. Let dry (usually in a couple of minutes) and buff off with a soft towel.
2. Once this is completed I would recommend a Pre-Wax Cleaner (sometimes called Swirl Remover) to smooth out slight paint imperfections. These cleaners go on very easily and buff off with a soft cloth. With more severe paint imperfections an electric polisher works best.
5
THE SMALLER DETAILS
Now that your pride and joy is clean and shines like on the day you got it, maybe have a closer inspection and see if some of the seals, plastic trims and the windows need some attention. There are many products out there to restore trim, usually with a small sponge, and bring it back to its original appearance. Clear plastic lenses can be polished to remove scratches, and seals can be conditioned with a product that contains glycerine. Don’t forget items such as a chrome exhaust tip. If it shows signs of corrosion you can use a lightly abrasive steel wool and then polish it with an All Metal & Chrome Polish.
A FINAL WORD There are literally dozens of quality products out there to keep your vehicle looking great. Meguirs, Mothers, Zymol, Auto Glym, Diamond Brite - the choice is yours. And the best thing about these products today - you won’t lose 10 pounds putting it on and taking it off. My arm is still sore from using Turtle Wax on my Dad’s car in the 70’s.

“If you can’t be fast, be pretty. If you can’t be pretty, be loud.”
Enzo Ferrari described the 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster as “the most beautiful car ever made”. It speaks volumes that the founder of Jaguar’s Italian rivals would make such a remark. And it shows how much of a vionaire Mr Ferrari was - as today, more than 50 years after its debute the E-Type is seen as one of the most beautiful and iconic cars that Britain’s ever produced.
When the E-Type debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show it had more than just its form to show off: It used Jaguar’s 3.8-litre straight six-cylinder engine, producing 265 hp and making it capable of 150 mph (The “pure” 4.2 liter Series 1 was used in model years 1965-1967). A modern rear-wheel drive system meant improved comfort, handling and performance, which deemed so successful that it remained in various models for over 25 years. The E-Type was also the first production vehicle not to use a separate body bolted onto a chassis, instead employing the racing design of a body tub attached to a tubular framework, with the engine bolted directly to the framework. --Dennis Grant
Later model updates of the E-Type were officially designated “Series 2” and “Series 3” and collector’s even created a sub-category “Series 1½” or “Series 1.5.” In the end Jaguar produced less than 5,000 left hand drive cars of the FHC 4.2-Liter Series 1 and less than 6,000 of the OTS - making them the most valuable ones. The car in the pictures is a fully restored numbers matching Series 1 4.2 “OTS” that calls Kelowna his home.

You Don’t Need a Warehouse to Start Your Own Car Collection!
o you have always wanted to collect cars, put your childhood dream cars next to the super cars of modern times, have classics from the mid 50s Corvette, to the famous Eleanore Mustang; park Magnum P.I.’s Ferrari next to Don Johnson’s Testarossa, and why not get the odd race car to compete with your super rare Pagani Zonda? Well, we will be very happy for you if you got those in 1:1 - but should your garage simply be too small and you are always the one number short playing the lottery, we have a solution for you! There are some museum quality models of iconic road and race cars out there, meticulously made with almost obsessive attention to detail; precision manufacturing, superb finish. and very often so desirable that they can actuall become an investment! These are not your Toys’R Us scale models, you will have to find a specialist store or do your online search. And very important: NEVER throw away the original box!
