If you love classic cars, hot rods, trucks or bikes, Vancouver Island is the place to be. Thanks to our mild climate, we can enjoy driving our gems year round. On any single day you can spot a classic, custom or modern super car on the road. Many of them are used as daily drivers. Yes, it’s a big culture here on the Island; and we are proud of it.

Olaf Robrecht

There are many magazines that introduce the region, the businesses, and the people who call Vancouver Island their home. It’s about a lifestyle that we all enjoy, attracting thousands of tourists each year, but the missing publication was a magazine that showcased the amazing cars on the Island. As a car enthusiast and collector all my life, working in and for the industry for many years as a designer, illustrator and publisher, I have been fascinated about how passionate people in this area are about their rides. Visiting the car shows, talking to owners, getting invited to club events, I have been amazed to see the quality and rarity of automobiles in this rather small area. Time to honour this, and introduce them. This is the first edition of Iconic Motoring Vancouver Island, and yes, you may miss some of the cars you have seen at car shows, or perhaps your own joy and pride, or the car your neighbour has in his garage. We know there is more, much more, out there. Let us know! Send us some pictures, as we are interested to see what you have. Or publish them on our Facebook page. We are already working on the next edition!

Believe it or not, yes, we do have some car manufacturers in Canada. Perhaps you remember the supercar that was introduced on Dragon’s Den a while ago? The Pléthore, gave us hope that the Maple Leaf would compete with the best out there. Unfortunately it seems that production never started. But - with the Felino and the Magnum we have two companies that are very close to production. We’ll keep you posted. HTT Pléthore

hen the original Pininfarina-styled Acura/ Honda NSX made its debut 26 years ago in 1990, it forever changed the supercar universe, by combining scintillating sports car styling and athletic performance with a new dimension of quality, exceptional ergonomics, comfort, and dynamic poise.

The car’s strong chassis rigidity and cornering/handling capabilities were the results of Formula One’s Ayrton Senna’s direct input with the NSX’s chief engineers while testing the prototype car at Honda’s Suzuka Circuit during its final development stages. Featuring an all-aluminium chassis, body, and double wishbone suspension, a first for a production car, resulted in the total weight of the entire bare aluminium monocoque of only 200 kg. It was powered by an all-aluminium 3.0 L V6 engin with 274hp and, from 1997 on, a 3.2 L V6 engine with 294hp. The NSX was discontinued in 2005. In December 2011, Honda officially announced a second generation NSX concept,

which was unveiled the following month at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as the Acura NSX Concept. Premiering at the 2015 North American International Autoshow, the production model is now available. The 2017 Acura NSX is the only supercar designed, developed and manufactured in the U.S. with production exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. But let us be clear - this is not a modern interpretation of the original mechanical and pure driving machine that was benchmarked against the Ferrari 328 and 348. The 2017 NSX is marrying new approaches to vehicle design fundamentals, including advanced body construction, component packaging and aerodynamic optimization combined with a hybrid-based all-wheel-drive system. Take the body - the NSX uses an aluminum space-frame and carbon-fiber floor with both aluminum and SMC (plastic) body panels that allowed it to be as light as possible.

EDITION 2016

2017 Acura NSX The NSX puts out a total of 573hp and 623 pound-feet of torque. Sitting behind the driver and passenger a twin-turbocharged, longitudinally mounted, dry-sump, 3.5-liter V-6 delivers 500hp and 406 pound-feet of torque. Not too bad, but there are also three electric motors (one direct drive unit bolted straight to the crank, contributing up to 47hp and 109 pound-feet of torque, and two motors independently powering each front wheel, good for another 36hp and up to 54 pound-feet of torque each, that make the difference: These electric motors with their instantaneous torque fill in while the turbos wake up. Which means no lag! Honda calls it “zero delay.” The NSX’s top speed is electronically limited to 191 mph, and 0 to 60 mph should take around 3 seconds and is accomplished using an easy-to-activate launch control. By the way: If you were dreaming of owning VIN No. 001 of the 2017 Acura NSX, well... it’s not going to happen. The proud owner will be NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, who paid nearly eight times the car’s price tag, US$1.2M, for rights to make the first custom order.

“If you can’t be fast, be pretty. If you can’t be pretty, be loud.” --Dennis Grant

Enzo Ferrari described the 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster as “the most beautiful car ever made”. It speaks volumes that the founder of Jaguar’s Italian rivals would make such a remark. And it shows how much of a visionaire Mr Ferrari was - as today, more than 50 years after its debute, the E-Type is seen as one of the most beautiful and iconic cars that Britain has ever produced. When the E-Type debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show it had more than just its form to show off: It used Jaguar’s 3.8-litre straight six-cylinder engine, producing 265 hp and making it capable of 150 mph (the “pure” 4.2 liter Series 1 was used in model years 1965-1967). A modern rear-wheel drive system meant improved comfort, handling and performance, which was deemed so successful that it remained in various models for over 25 years. The E-Type was also the first production vehicle that did not use a separate body bolted onto a chassis. Instead it employed the racing design of a body tub attached to a tubular framework, with the engine bolted directly to the framework.

In the end Jaguar produced less than 5,000 left hand drive cars of the FHC 4.2-Liter Series, 1 and less than 6,000 of the OTS - making them the most valuable E-Types. The car in the pictures is owned by Brian Evers in Mill Bay. He bought this 1967 OTS in 1983 and drove it for many years, before an accident needed him to replace the hood and have the car repainted. When the body shop found more and more rust issues, they decided to have the car fully restored. Eight years and about 8,000 hours work hours later it finally got its paint job in a beautiful Gunmetal Gray. It won “Best Debuting Restoration” at the VanDusen Gardens Show soon after! It shouldn’t be the only award, scoring an average of 99.95. “The best part is, I still, after 30 years ownership, enjoy driving it more than any other car I have ever driven,” says Brian.

Sgt. Pepper’s 1965 Rolls Royce

T

here were a lot of double takes and frantically captured cellphone photos in Victoria, on the morning of February 16.

As they walked, drove and cycled to work, commuters were treated to the sight of a multicoloured treasure of Beatles memorabilia on the back of a flat deck truck heading towards the Royal BC Museum. It has been on display locally and internationally a handful of times over the past 30 years, yet most people are still surprised to hear that among the millions of objects in the Royal BC Museum’s collection is John Lennon’s 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Touring Limousine, painted in Romani “gypsy,” Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band style. That morning Royal BC Museum curators and conservationists were transporting the Rolls-Royce from a secret storage location and carefully squeeze it through the front doors and into the main lobby, where it will be on public display until April 28, 2016. “With more than seven million artifacts and specimens in the vast collections of the Royal BC Museum, it’s near-impossible to choose the most significant,” said Royal BC Museum CEO Prof. Jack Lohman. “The Lennon Rolls Royce is certainly one of the most iconic items, connecting British Columbians both with Expo ’86, a seminal event for the province, and to the Beatles, who fascinated and entertained the world.”

The Rolls-Royce Phantom V Touring Limousine, delivered in 1965 to John Lennon in its original matte black, has been identified as the car that took the Beatles to Buckingham Palace to receive their MBEs from the Queen. When Lennon ordered it, he did not yet have a driver’s licence. The car was damaged when Lennon took it to Spain the following year, for the film, How I Won the War. When it was repaired and updated, Lennon added new features such as a rear seat that converts into a bed, and a television. Then, in 1967, Lennon sent the Rolls to artist Steve Weaver, who designed custom paintwork in a Romani “gypsy” style, with elements of the psychedelic era. The newly-painted car was delivered to Lennon just before the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album was released. In 1970, Lennon and Yoko Ono took the car to the U.S. Due to tax issues it was donated to the Cooper Hewett Museum in 1974 and shown in an exhibit on design. It was then sold at a Sotheby’s Auction in 1985. It was purchased by BC billionaire entrepreneur James “Jimmy” Pattison, OC, OBC, for his chain of Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” Museums. He paid US $2,299,000 and then displayed it in his largest venue in Florida as “the world’s most expensive car.” The Premier of BC appointed Mr. Pattison to oversee the Expo 86 World’s Fair. As the theme of the Fair was “Transportation and Communication: World in EDITION 2016

Motion - World in Touch”, many vehicles were displayed – including the Rolls, an extremely popular and photogenic attraction. After Expo ’86, instead of exporting the vehicle, Mr. Pattison donated it to the Province in 1987 for a museum exhibit. Ownership changed hands for $1. Since then the Rolls-Royce has been in the care of what is now called the Royal BC Museum. This car has been in mechanical operating condition for fifty years. The engine powers the brakes, a necessary feature given its weight: a standard 1964 Phantom V Rolls Royce is 3,000 kilograms. In comparison, a 2016 Smart Fortwo coupé (“Smart car”) weighs only 820 kilograms. Mr. Weaver -the artist- used ordinary but very vulnerable house (latex) paint. The Royal BC Museum monitors the paint condition closely and has done conservation work on the paint over the years. The car has been on display at various Royal BC Museum special events. It has also been exhibited across North America and beyond, most recently at exhibits in Montreal and in Vancouver at the 2015 PNE. It will continue to inspire surprised looks and selfies in the Royal BC Museum lobby until April 28, 2016.

The Italian Connection It is “one of the most misunderstood and undervalued” cars of the 1970s. - Jay Leno

T

he Pantera was originally the product of collaboration between De Tomaso, an Italian race and sports car manufacturer based in Modena, Italy, and Ford.

In 1969, De Tomaso needed a successor to their beautiful Mangusta mid-engine sports car. At about the same time, having famously failed to buy Ferrari, Ford was looking for a mid-engine exotic flagship sports car to add prestige to their product line. Lee Iaccoca’s and Carroll Shelby’s connections with De Tomaso ultimately resulted in a deal between the two companies to work together. Consequently, Ghia was tasked with the design of the coachwork, famed F-1 chassis designer Gian Paollo Dallara designed the chassis, and Ford contributed their new high performance 351 Cleveland engine. The result was a state-of-the art mid-engine supercar that was faster than its Italian competitors but, because of its mass production engine, could be built for less. De Tomaso’s deal with Ford was to build Panteras in Italy and sell them through Lincoln Mercury dealerships in the North America. Starting in 1970, some 5244 were sold this way before new U.S. federal safety and emissions regulations would have meant a major redesign, causing Ford to end the relationship in 1974. What is less commonly known, however, is that De Tomaso kept the rights to produce the Pantera and to sell it outside the U.S.. The car actually remained in very low volume production until 1991. It remained largely unchanged until 1980, when De Tomaso redesigned it with a new and luxurious all-leather interior as well as with various mechanical upgrades including larger brakes and wheels from their FIA Group 3 and Group 4 race cars, respectively. The massive magnesium wheels with their 345/35-15 rear and 285/40-15 front tires necessitated the addition of fiberglass wheel flares to the steel monocoque body. These, when combined with the big air dam derived from the Group 4 cars and a large rear delta wing, created a new and highly aggressive look for the Pantera. This new model, of which fewer than 250

EDITION 2016

were built, was called the GT5 and remained in production until 1985 when it was replaced by the re-bodied all-metal GT5-S. The car in these photos is particularly special because it is a 1989 model, one of only two GT5 Panteras known to have been built after 1985. It was a custom build by the De Tomaso factory for a sheik in Dubai, and later acquired by its current Victoria owner in 2004. After a restoration in 2005, it was selected to represent De Tomaso on the podium at the 2006 Concorso Italiano in Monterey when De Tomaso was that year’s featured marque. The car has been restored to original appearance, but mechanically modified for improved safety and performance. The stock 351 Windsor engine has been stroked to 427 cubic inches and produces 526 horsepower at the rear wheels. The original restrictive ANSA exhaust was replaced with a custom three-inch system designed in California by Fred Matsumoto of Mind-Train. The car also features a unique custom bi-xenon HID headlight system.

1959 TRIUMPH TR 3A

When Ben Mikkelsen got this car from his wife and son as a project it was rusty and in parts. “A million pieces,” he remembers. Today, after a four year restoration, this little gem shines in Milano Red and thanks to the balanced and blueprinted 2,375cc engine with dynamic crankshaft balancer, fast road cam, a polished cylinder head fitted with extra large vales, the 4 speed full synchromesh transmission with “J” type overdrive box, an upgraded suspension with racing rear springs and heavy duty shock absorber valving, front Brembo disc brakes and 10” rear drums with “Alfin” cooling rings, “has a fair bit of attitude and will hold its own with many much more powerful cars.”

1961 AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000 Mark II The Austin-Healey was built from 1959 to 1967. With its 3-litre engine the 3000 was a highly successful car, which won its class in many European rallies in its heyday and is still raced in many classic car competitions around the world today. The car in the picture is a Mark II which was introduced in March 1961 and discontinued in October 1963 with the introduction of the 3000 Mark III. The Mark III remained in production until the end of 1967, when manufacture of Austin-Healeys ceased. A total of 11,564 Mark IIs were made.

1971 Mercedes 280 SL “Pagoda” This beautiful car is commonly known as the “Pagoda” Mercedes, collectively because of its unusual hardtop shape. Originally launched at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the W113 (in Mercedes-speak) was first available as a 230 and 250 SL, before in 19xx the last of the series, the 280SL was introduced. Accredited to French designer Paul Bracq, the 280 SL was a technological marvel when it debuted. A fuelinjected, overhead camshaft, a 2778cc straight-six engine, 170hp and disc brakes on all four wheels where uncommon at the time. Actually not really a “Sports Lightweight” (which would be the correct translation for the German

“Sport Leicht”), the W113 featured a unibody construction with front and rear deformation zones (another first), an aluminum hood, deck lid and door skins , and was capable of 0-60 mph in little more than 8 seconds. The hard top roof, which was designed by Bela Barenyi of the MercedesBenz pre-development department, may seem delicate at first, but was engineered to withstand a load of 1000kg providing enough rollover protection in case of an accident. Mercedes sold 48,912 W113 worldwide. 23,885 of those were the 280 SL. A great collectors’ car with prices on the rise. And like any MercedesBenz from the era, the build quality is impeccable, making it a wonderful and usable investment. images by Robert Dening

The most obvious visual element is the “roof strake” that runs from the base of the A-pillar, above the glass, and to the base of the C-pillar. It is available in aluminum, black, or body color. Along with the new design comes a brand new twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V-12 with 600+ hp. Delivery will start later this year.

BMW M2 Origin M.

With a more aggressive styling the M2 looks like a proper M car from all sides. And with a 3.0-liter inline-six with 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 343 pound-feet of torque - it is one! Choose between a manual 6-speed transmission or M double-clutch transmission - and have fun!

BENTLEY BENTAYGA “The Height of Luxury”

ALFA ROMEO 4C

Bentley’s first SUV might very well be the most opulent and expensive SUV on Earth. At US$230,000 the first year of production was sold out in just a few weeks, and it sets other records as well: It offers a $160,000 Breitling clock integrated into the dashboard as its priciest option!

La Bella Italia!

The much anticipated 4C marks Alfa Romeo’s return to the North American market. Available as a coupe or spider, the two-seat sports car is designed around the driver. Using high-tech materials (the monocoque is a single Carbon Fibre body), the heart of this Italian beauty is an all-aluminum, 237-horsepower 1,750-cc turbocharged four-cylinder with direct-injection, dual intercoolers and variable-valve timing, that propels the 4C to a top speed of 258 km/h. The TCT twin-clutch transmission with paddle shifters comes with a “launch control” mode — delivering maximum acceleration as soon as the brake is released.

BMW 7 SERIES The Future of Luxury

“With the BMW 7 Series we are creating tomorrow’s luxury today.” Built on a brand new modular platform made out of lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, BMW’s new flagship comes with the newest and best technological offerings available - owners can even maneuver the sedan in and out of tight parking spots by simply using buttons on the key fob. And if the V8 should just not do - BMW just announced the V12-powered M760i.

BUICK AVISTA “Where beauty and performance intersect”

Yes, it is a concept, but one that they will have to build. Buick debuted the Avista at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year. And ever since its debut, car critics haven’t stopped talking about its sleek design and the high-tech interior of this luxury two-door coupe. Now, GM didn’t say whether the Avista will ever be produced, but they gave a hint “that some of the innovative features may be seen in upcoming vehicles.” Let’s just say that there is hope ...

CADILLAC ATS-V COUPE Passion & Performance

FERRARI GTC4LUSSO BUICK LACROSSE

“Tailor-made to push performance to the brink. Brought to life purely for the thrill of the drive.”

Three times lucky!

The third generation of the elegant LaCrosse is pleasing to the eye, but it is the stylish interior with a high, floating-bridge center console, that really stands out. 3.6L V6 with 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque.

CADILLAC CT6 Returning to the realm of full-size luxury

“The prestigious sedan has been reinvented. With the first-ever CT6, Cadillac embarks on a bold journey that sets the new standard for excellence.” The CT6 features an aluminum-intensive structure, optional 4-wheel steering, optional AWD, as well as high-tech goodies such as LED lighting, massaging seats, and a super-premium audio system.

The heart of the ATS-V is a 3.6L Twin Turbo V6 engine with titanium-aluminide turbines, patented, low-volume, charge-air cooler and titanium connecting rods for superior response and performance, delivering 455 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. The ATS-V comes with a six-speed manual transmission with GM’s no-lift-shift feature, launch control and an electronic limited-slip differential. - available as a Sedan, too.

CHEVROLET CAMARO 1LE “Performance Package”

Now Available with a V-6 or a V-8! The Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package returns for 2017, poised to set new benchmarks for attainable track performance. The package builds off the success of the previous-generation 1LE, offering increased handling and track performance. It incorporates a track-ready suspension setup, wider wheels and sticky summer tires, mild aerodynamic add-ons, and extra cooling for the engine and driveline. In response to customer demand, Chevrolet will offer two distinct 1LE packages, for both V6 and V8 models, each visually distinguished with a satin black hood, specific wheels and more. No doubt, muscle- and pony-car fans will always opt for the V-8, but the 335-hp 3.6-liter V-6 might be a good option.

FORD ESCAPE Growing up!

Ford’s compact crossover just got some neat styling updates, some new tech features and new engines. With the two-bar hexagonal grille and larger headlights, the Escape gets a slightly wider stance, getting it closer to the looks of the larger Edge. New technologies such as the available Auto Start-Stop Technology will help reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions during city driving, while an Active Park Assist will parallel park the car for you. There are three engine options: 2.5L, 1.5L EcoBoost and a 2.0L EcoBoost engine.

DODGE POWER WAGON Works hard - plays hard!

12,000-lb capacity winch, electronic sway bar disconnect, front and rear selectable lockers all standard. 33” tires - standard. Bilstein shocks. Standard. Go anywhere attitude, obviously standard. Have fun out there!

CHRYSLER PACIFICA The new Town & Country

But don’t call it that! Chrysler really wants to make sure that this is an allnew Minivan, packed full of features, technology, and functionality. And you don’t attract young parents - the target customers - with that old name. The 2017 Pacifica sits on an all-new platform and has a fresh, new look. You can even have 20-inch wheels! As for powertrains, a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a Hybrid are available.

FERRARI GTC4LUSSO “A Whole New World”

It may look like a facelift of the Ferrari FF, but the four-seat GTC4’s style, aerodynamics, powertrain and chassis dynamics have all been reworked. The new GTC4 Lusso badge makes reference to famous Ferraris such as the 330 GTC, the four-seat 330 GT and the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. There’s more than enough power, thanks to the 6.3-litre V12 engine with 681bhp and 697Nm: 0-100 in 3.4 secs and a top-speed of 335 km/h.

GMC CANYON The tough one

The award-winning premium midsize truck got a lot of praise for its design and high-end materials. New for 2016, Canyon offers a 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine that takes its segment-leading capability and efficiency to new heights, including a maximum trailering rating of 7,700 pounds (3,493 kg). The standard engine remains a 2.5L fourcylinder that’s rated at up to 27 mpg on the highway, and an optional 3.6L V-6 with up to 1,590 pounds (721 kg) of payload and up to 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg) maximum trailering. Though built for the roughest roads, the Canyon’s cabin is exceptionally quiet and comfortable, with attention to detail and premium materials.

JAGUAR F-PACE The Performance SUV

It won’t take long before you see the Jaguar F-Pace “crossover” – defined as the point where a car meets a sports utility vehicle (SUV) – in and around Victoria. A Jaguar SUV? Sure, and it prominently features Jaguar’s current design language inspired by the C-X17 line of concept cars. The interior of the F-Pace draws plenty of similarities from its luxury sedan siblings, which is not a bad choice. The Pace feels like a real Jaguar but can accommodate 23.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the rear seats flat and the space increases to an impressive 61.4 cubic feet. Available with a 2.0-litre i4 turbocharged Diesel engine and a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged engine with either 340hp or 380hp.

FIAT 124 SPIDER A reborn classic?

Wait, isn’t that a ..? Yes, we know. And you got a point there. And although there are some nice references to the original, especially in the general shape of the grille and the rectangular taillights, it is actually based on the Mazda MX-5. Under the hood sits the same engine as in the 500 Abarth - a 1.4-liter MultiAir with 160 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. The interior ... well, other than some badges and smaller details it is pretty much that of the Mazda. No Italian pride in here ...

JAGUAR XE The Sports Saloon

Britain’s answer to the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class is a compact premium sport sedan created with state-ofthe-art, Advanced Aluminum Architecture. Its streamlined shape has the lowest drag coefficient of any Jaguar model ever (0.26 Cd). Packed with systems that empower the driver and enhance the driving experience, Jaguar says this car “rewrites the rules and is a wake up call for every other car in its class.”

LAMBORGHINI HURACAN SPYDER Predictably hot

“Designed to cut through the air and become one with the sky, the new Huracán Spyder is a pinnacle of Italian made taste and handcraftsmanship.” So they say, and we don’t have a doubt it is true. The topless Huracán LP610-4 Spyder uses the same 602-hp 5.2-liter V-10 as the coupe, as well as the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and allwheel-drive system. The only change is the addition of a stop-start and cylinder deactivation (which shuts down one of the Huracán’s cylinder banks entirely, leaving the engine to run as an inline-five). The soft-top opens in only 17 seconds, giving access to a gorgeous soundtrack. And should there be some rain but you still want to hear that wonderful engine sound - the rear window can be lowered independently from the top!

INFINITY Q60 Inspired Performance

“Combining expressive design with exhilarating performance and dynamics” - this is where Infinity sees the new Q60 sports coupe. ”This third generation of Infiniti’s iconic Q60 premium sports coupe is the car that premium drivers in Canada have been waiting for,” said Stephen Lester, managing director of Infiniti Canada. “With its luxurious lines, powerful character and innovative drivetrain, the Q60 is an evocative addition to our line-up that demonstrates why Infiniti is one of the fastest-growing automotive brands in the premium segment.” Available with two 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with 300hp or 400hp, and a new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 208hp.

INFINITY QX30 Quite the looker

Nissan’s luxury marque gave the QX30 a very dramatic styling - and it works. From a sharp nose, over large wheel wells and along a lowcut cabin, until tapering past Infiniti’s signature reverse-crescent C-pillar to a truncated tail. We like it. Available in three different models including the base QX30, the sport-tuned QX30S, and the QX30 AWD. The QX30 will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower.

KIA SPORTAGE Designed in Germany

A 2.4-litre direct-injected engine producing 181 horsepower comes standard, but if you’re looking for even more power, an available 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces an impressive 237 horses and 260 lb-ft. of torque. Add that to the new sporty look and you may have found the small crossover you were looking for!

MAZDA CX-9 “The Stance of a Cheetah”

They call it a beautiful bold KODO Design at Mazda. Also known as the “Soul of Motion,” “KODO Design is inspired by the stance of a cheetah the moment before it pounces on its prey, capturing the raw excitement of a car in motion, even when parked.” Now you know! The CX-9 three-row crossover is the latest model to be completely redesigned under Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” ethos with aggressive weight-savings design techniques and fuel-efficient engine technologies. It is also the first model to feature Mazda’s new 2.5-liter direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-G 2.5T, and comes with i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features and the i-ACTIV AWD all-wheel-drive system.

MAZDA MX-5 The Spirit of a Sportscar

You are right, the MX-5 is not new, but we just love its new look and thought we should include it. And did you know that almost one million have been sold in its 25+ year career, making it the most popular sportscar of all time? Anyway - this car with its 2.0-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder with Skyactiv technology is a lot of fun, and it is affordable.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE Against All Odds...

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is the world’s first premium compact SUV/ COV convertible - and as weird as it may sound .. it works! With the top up it retains the shape of the Evoque, and with its top down it actually does look predictably fantastic. We can definitely see a niche here. Let’s wait and see ... but we wouldn’t be surprised to see other brands follow the trend.

NISSAN ARMADA The Petrol is back!

TESLA MODEL X

TOYOTA-FT 1

Electrifying

Tesla calls it “the safest, fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle in history.” The Model X comes with all-wheel drive and a 90 kWh battery providing 410 kilometers of range, ample seating for seven adults and all of their gear. And it’s ludicrously fast, accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in as quick as 3.4 seconds. And don’t forget the cool Falcon Wing rear doors which fold up and out of the way!

Please build it!

Yes, unfortunately this is (at this point) only a concept car, created by CALTY Design Research, Toyota’s North American Design branch. FT-1 stands for “Future Toyota,” and the number “1” represents the ultimate. According to its designers, the FT-1 Concept is the ultimate expression of a Toyota coupe design, building upon Toyota’s rich sports coupe heritage dating back to the 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2 and most recently Scion FR-S. “A new chapter for Toyota Global Design” they say. We agree, and we keep our fingers crossed!

VOLVO V90 Nordish by nature After a $11 billion cash infusion from its Chinese owner, Geely, the once iconic Swedish automaker introduced the XC90, a luxury hybrid SUV, the S90 sedan and the latest in the premium car maker’s top-of-the-line 90 series, the V90 wagon, and is well on its way to win back those who walked away and attract those who never thought about buying a Volvo. Under the hood of the V90 will be the T6 and T8 engines, the latter of which combines a 2.0-liter twin-charged unit with an electric motor for a total output of 410 horsepower.

1959 Jaguar Mark IX The Jaguar Mark IX (“Mark Nine”) is the very last version of the large luxury saloon Jaguars that first appeared in 1950 in the form of the Mark VII. Introduced at the Earls Court London motor show in 1958 and built between 1959 and 1961 it still resembles the car of a decade earlier but was updated mechanically, with a 220-hp, 3.8-liter, DOHC six-cylinder engine, standard four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and a Borg-Warner automatic transmission (a four-speed was available, too). As with the MK VIII the majority of MK IX’s were sold with a dual color scheme, with the darker color on top. This beautiful example calls the Cobble Hill area its home and is part of a private Jaguar collection.

The engine is a fully rebuilt 235ci bone stock with upgraded trans and rear differentials, drum brakes, heavy duty tires and rims. Equally important was the 120l fuel tank, while the Mercedes front seats should give some extra comfort. Good luck!

1967 RS/SS Camaro Convertible Owning a 1967 RS/SS Camaro had always been a dream for Morey, the owner of this red beauty. Having seen one race down the Western Speedway 1/8 mile track when he was just 16 years old changed his life. It took twenty seven years before he finally started the search for his dream car. “I was originally looking for a coupe, but as fate would have it, after searching until all hours of the night, one very early morning I found a 67 RS/SS convertible on Craigslist Vancouver! I couldn’t believe my luck, or what I thought was my luck.” The car had a beautiful paint job and was dead straight and according to the owner, a restoration was done on it within the past 10 years. “I asked him for any documentation or pictures he had of the restoration. Of course he didn’t have any. It should have been a big warning signal!” To cut a long story short - there was nothing but a pile of rust held together with a bunch of Bondo. Morey gave the car to Kevin Sauriol from Bear Mountain Autobody who would work on the body for almost 2 years. Enough time for Morey to come up with some ideas for how he wanted to build the car and to get all the parts together. From that day in February when Kevin dropped off the car as a painted shell at Morey’s shop, he was committed to have her on the road that summer. “My brother and my son helped me bolting in the DSE hydroformed front clip with rack and pinion steering, coil over shocks and C6 spindles. They also gave me a hand with dropping in the 350 SBC crate motor, 700R4 trans and installing the 12 bolt diff and Chris Alston’s G-Link rear 4-link suspension. The motor has now been upgraded to a Dart 427 Stroker SBC with a Hilborn ITB EFI setup and the trans has been upgraded to a GM Performance Parts 4L70E that Peter Willie beefed up to handle the additional HP and torque from the stroker, the shift points are controlled by USShift.com’s Quick 4 electronic controller.” There is so much more, including the Wilwood brakes all around with 13” drilled and slotted rotors, the Infinity Box Intelligent Multiplex wiring system, all electronic stepper type gauges, LED lights .. that we can’t list it all. After about 1500 hrs of his own time and at least 200 spent with his brother and son, Morey finally got his dream car!

The RX-Vision Concept Yes, this rotary-powered car is a concept. Unfortunately. But as so often - there is a chance they will build it! RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with exquisite, KODO design-based proportions only Mazda could envision, and powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. Mazda actually did confirm that rotary engines are being developed, so this could be the start of a new generation of RX. We sure hope so!

Deuce Days

2016 Northwest Deuce Days

T

he Northwest Deuce Days has become one of the premier collector car events in North America. Car fans, families and visitors flock to the Inner Harbour, Empress Hotel and Legislative Grounds to admire some of the most spectacular Hot Rods and Custom Cars in North America.

Al Clark, a former race-car driver who builds and modifies cars for clients worldwide from his home garage in Fairfield, started the event in 1998. The show is held every three years, this being the 8th time. “I am proud to say that this is one of the most anticipated shows around with 1100 registrants from all over the world, 550 of them being Deuces. Some of the biggest names in the Hotrod world are participating. Although it is primarily for cars built in the year of 1932 (the 1932 Ford Coupe was known as “The Deuce”), it also welcomes vehicles up to the year 1951. People can see a number of examples: barn-find unrestored, restored to original, and, of course, modified. From mild to wild. Limited only by the owner’s imagination and chequebook. While some of the cars can be seen driving around Victoria before this spectacular event, the highlight of Deuce Days is the public show on July 21st to 24th. 1928 Ford Model A Roadster

It all started in 1985 with just a TCI chassis that had been modified by Snow White Hotrods in Fresno, California, who specialize in putting E-Type Jaguar suspensions on a Model A frame. The front is rack and pinion ‘70s S-Type Jaguar and suspension. The rear is completely a poilished and chromed ‘70s E-Type independent suspension. The original owner brought the chassis to Victoria the same year. The idea was to put it under a 1931 Model A, but things changed and the frame was tucked away in the rafters of their basement until the current owner purchased it in July 2004. “Everything was wrapped up in 1985 Times Colonist and Los Angeles Times Newspaper,” Trevor laughs, “just like it was frozen in time.” Trevor and his son Alex now had a project that would keep them busy for the next 10 years. They ordered a custom all-steel modified body and box (Last Refuge Hotrods) and fibreglass fenders from Westcott’s in Oregon. The drivetrain consists of a 350 HO GM crate engine pushing more than 350 hp. The transmission is a GM 700R4. Painted in PPG custom “Rat Roaster Green” the father and son team then installed the interior, the wheels (15” & 17”) and did all the wiring. On June 21 2014 this beauty got licensed and ever since is driven at least once a month, even on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Better Than Gold? Investing in Classic Cars

T

he classic-car market is booming. Fueled largely by well-situated baby-boomers, who want to own the restored dream of their youth, the market has rebounded from a crash just a few years ago to reach new highs. The prices of certain models are going through the roof, particularly European sports cars from the mid ‘50s and ‘60s, and at this point there is no indication that the market will soften soon. Some vintage Ferraris are in the double digit millions, and a late-1970s Porsche Turbo doubled in price in just two years.

A car? Really?

well, rare racing and road versions of automobiles made by – for example – Mercedes-Benz and Maserati. Attractive models that were produced in small numbers have the highest public profile and the strongest credentials for the most exclusive events. Rare, high quality cars are most attractive for the collector. Let’s have a look at Ferrari. The name is synonymous with power, beauty, rarity, and their cars are, for most of us, unattainable. Ferrari has become one of the most recognized trade names in the world. We have picked three models: One from the ‘60s, one from the early 70s, and one from the mid-70s.

There is something about a car that makes it more interesting than an investment with your bank. It is something that you can look at, admire, touch, that you can feel. It invokes your senses, you can polish it, show it to your friends, bring “The value of it to car events and share the passion with other enthusiasts. All while it makes you rare classic cars money. The right car is a concrete investhas risen in value ment standing the test of time.

Ferrari 250 GTO (1962-64)

A total of only 39 250 GTOs were manufactured between 1962 and 1964. That alone makes this model extremely rare. And out of the 39 there are 33 Series I cars, three Series II and three “330 GTO” specials with a larger engine. Many consider the GTO to be more than 500% the “Greatest Ferrari of all time.” It is So what type of car should I look for? over the past 10 also the most valuable Ferrari. Ferrari 246GT “Dino” (1969-74)

Named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, a total of 3,569 car were made (2,295 GTs and 1,274 GTS). The car was $14,500 new in 1969. In the early 2000s you could buy one for around $80,000, in 2009 the price was around $150,000, and if you just fell in love with the beautiful lines of the 246, be prepared to spend around $400,000 for a restored or immaculate condition model.

Ferrari 308/328 (1975-85)

This model might be your last chance to own a classic Ferrari that is considered to be iconic. The successor to the now out-of-reach “Dino,” the “holy grail” is the first production run which was entirely made of glass-reinforced plastic (or GRP). This lasted until June 1977, when the 308 was switched to steel bodies. If you would have bought the so-called “Vetroresina” just a few years ago, you would most likely have paid around $45,000-50,000. Today it will set you back at least $150,000. But even the regular 308s, which were available in different engine and body versions, are climbing rapidly in value. You can still get nice examples for around $60,000 but recent auction and private sales had many cars listed and sold for more than $100,000. Although we have picked Ferrari for our little historic excursion, the same applies to other European brands such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz or Aston-Martin. So now you can do your own research and try to find the perfect investment opportunity, but be warned – if you are not an expert, a lot can go wrong. You also have to look at the real numbers. Think about maintenance, storage, insurance. If you are not careful you can lose a lot of money.

FERRARI 246 GT/GTS “DINO” (1969-74) Named to honour Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari’s son and heir Dino Ferrari, the 246 was marketed at a lower, more“affordable” price capable of taking on the Porsche 911. Dino 246 production numbered 2,295 GTs and 1,274 GTSs, for a total production run of 3,569. The price skyrocketed in the last few years, with prices around $400,000 for a decent car.

All in all this is a fascinating market, but investing in collector cars is just as complex and involving as any other type of investment. It requires knowledge, passion and patience to succeed as an owner, financially and for enjoyment. www.historicautomobilegroup.com

As so often ... it might be better to:

Ask The Experts!

The Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) Founded in 2007, this group has chosen new avenues to analyze the collectors’ market for rare classic cars. Following the motto “driven by knowledge” the approach is based on financial analysis, adjusted to the specialities of this niche collectors’ asset class. HAGI is known in the market to produce a series of indices charting the top levels of the classic car market. Updated monthly on HistoricAutoGroup.com the HAGI Top Index is published regularly by the Financial Times, in Octane magazine UK, Classic Sportscar France, die Welt online in Germany as well as Bloomberg, to name a few. The HAGI Index Group has developed their indices based on thousands of documented transactions collected from four areas: broker/dealers, marque specialists, auction results and private individuals. Five indices have been published so far: The HAGI Top 50 comprising of rare models from all marques and age periods, the 1920s to the supercars of 2000. The HAGI F and HAGI P indices, which measure the market for rare Ferrari and Porsche respectively gives followers marque specific performance as well as the HAGI ex P& F Index, which currently contains 24 car models other than Porsche and Ferrari. From 2012 HAGI added the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index MBCI.

Better Than Gold

In 2014 the HAGI team published the second edition of ‘Better Than Gold, Investing in Historic Cars’, a comprehensive book that lists many of the group’s finding, e.g. the sectors’ performance since 1980 as well as introducing the indices background, their methodologies, marques and models in detail. An extensive glossary with over 200 quality photographs of collectors’ cars lists price relevant data as well as current index constituents, all in all demonstrating many new aspects of this sector to the expert as well as making it transparent for the novice entrant and pasionate owner. Better Than Gold is a must read for anyone interested in the classic car sector. Publisher: HAGI Publishing; 2nd Revised edition edition ISBN-10: 0956864481

ASTON MARTIN DB5 (1963-65) Another car that became famous because of a movie: The DB5 is said to be the most recognised cinematic James Bond car, first appearing alongside Sean Connery in Goldfinger (1964) . A total of 1,023 cars were produced, 123 of them as convertibles. And yes, Daniel Craig drove a DB in Skyfall ... and if you want one, make sure to have at least $650,000.

KONICZEK The Wing-Master Restoring the Gullwing Mercedes and other Spirited Automobiles

I

kid you not. Typing these first few words I must have starred at the blank screen for at least an hour. Is it really so hard to write about someone you have know for 15 years? Someone with whom you have shared many memorable moments, who you admire for his passion, his knowledge, his talent. Someone who over the years became a close friend, even a mentor of sorts. A person who gave great advice when I bought my first vintage car, coorganized a Harley-Davidson tour for a group of German businessmen with me, with whom I spent so many evenings enjoying some of the best food and wine? Who became a key person putting together this very first edition of Iconic Motoring Vancouver Island. No, it can’t be that difficult to write about this man... My story with Rudi started when a friend of mine, Ecki Marten, a Mercedes-Benz aficionado and Gullwing owner, had asked me to bring a 1970 Mercedes 280SL with him to Saanich. I remember my first time on this narrow country lane with its humps and twists, turning onto a driveway with a gate guarded by two massive Gargoyles, driving along an impressive stone wall, and arriving at the home and workshops of a worldrenowned restorer of the most iconic German car of all times, the 300 SL (W198) sports car. But it was “Brunhilde” who welcomed me first. No, not his wife, but a 1958 Mercedes L319 van in a camouflage outfit... Nothing has changed in all those years, and you will have the same experience when you come to meet Rudi Koniczek. Entering a small office, stuffed with hundreds if not thousands of books, collectibles and memorabilia, photographs and artwork of some of the most significant cars of all times, Rudi will most likely welcome you sitting at his small desk, on the phone discussing the purchase,

sale or restoration of an automobile gem with one of his many clients. Just have a seat in one of the comfortable armchairs, let your eyes wander and Rudi will be with you in a moment. Born in Germany in 1949 as an only child, Rudi’s childhood was all but easy. Growing up experiencing the effects of a just recently concluded war had a large influence on his life. With his parents, he immigrated to Canada in 1953, set-

“Money is secondary, and whatever one does should be done strictly for passion, whether in work or love. What I do isn’t work. It’s a way of life and money will follow passion. And if it doesn’t, you’re still having fun!” tling in Toronto. Bullied by his new classmates for his German heritage lead to one of the guidelines he would live his life by: “Never hurt anybody, and never be hurt by anybody.” His love for the 300SL started as a teenager. Working in a hobby shop the owner paid him in model kit cars, many of them versions of the iconic Mercedes-Benz. Rudi spent days building the cars, paying attention to all the

details. The build-quality was splendid. It was in 1965, when young Rudi met then-president Rainer Lange-Mechlen at the Mercedes-Benz Canada headquarters, and showed him the model cars he had built. Lange-Mechlen saw the passion and ambition Rudi had for the cars. He looked at him and asked him what he would like to do. “Mr LangeMechlen, I would like to be sitting where you are sitting” was the surprising answer. And this is when Rudi Koniczek’s life-long journey with Mercedes cars took off. Rainer Lange-Mechlen helped him get a job at Mercedes Canada when their automobiles were sold through Studebaker-Packard dealers, and it didn’t take Rudi long to become the only factorytrained apprentice in Canada, who soon after would travel across the country repairing Mercedes-Benz cars. It was in 1969 when Rudi came to Victoria for the first time, and he fell in love with the city. Only two years later he left Mercedes-Benz, moved to Victoria and eventually opened “Pacific Competition Developments”, followed by “Autohaus,’ a shop dedicated to the service and repair of European cars. Business was booming, and Rudi found himself spending more time running a business than working on cars. One night he made the decision to follow his heart. He closed “Autohaus” and decided to concentrate on the restoration of his favourite car, the Mercedes 300SL, of which the first arrived for a service at his shop in 1972. More than 40 years later, operating as “Rudi & Company”, Rudi Koniczek has established one of the busiest restoration businesses in the world and has restored more than 150 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters. Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198) The Most Iconic German Sports Car. Ever. Period.

You may call it a piece of automotive history, a sculpture, a masterpiece - and it is all of it. With its “gull wing” doors and its almost organic contours it was a style-setter, a design conception that influenced the world’s automotive industry for many years. Today, more than 60 years after it was first presented to the public on February 6, 1954 at the New York International Automobile Show, it is a car that can take first place in a concours d’elegance, and be a racer at the same time. It can be part of a collection, or a daily luxury carriage, and a solid investment. With a total of 1383 Gullwing coupes built during the period of 1954 to 1957, 29 of which featured all aluminum bodies, and 1858 roadsters (built between 1957 and 1963), the Mercedes 300SL is one of the highest priced collectors cars today, fetching prices in the millions of dollars. The “holy grail” of the 300SLs, the aluminum bodies “alloy SL”, is the rarest and highest priced of them all. Victoria’s own Rudi Koniczek famously unearthed one of these specimens, #21, in a Santa Monica barn. It took Mr Koniczek two decades to convince the owner to sell it. The 1955 special alloy-bodied Gullwing is now completely restored and “one of our best,” as Koniczek says. And knowing that another alloy SL, an older restoration, was sold at an auction for US$ 4.2 Million just a few years ago, it comes with no surprise that someone offered 7 Million Dollars for #21. The owner refused. The car in the pictures here is a local beautiful example of the 300 SL Roadster. A 1958 finished in Anthracite Grey with a Grey interior and fitted luggage.

The Top 10 Ultimate Watches For Petrolheads 1

The worlds of watchmaking and automobile racing have shared a strong connection for decades. Cars and timepieces share many characteristics. Think about it: Car racing is not just about speed; it encompasses high-tech mechanics, top performance, and state-of-the-art design—just like high-end watchmaking. No wonder that race- and high-performance cars often serve as a direct inspiration for watches. Good examples for this are classics such as TAG Heuer Carrera, the Rolex Daytona, or the Chopard Mille Miglia. Unfortunately, we can’t show you all the wonderful timepieces that have ties to motoring, but we have picked a list of watches, from very affordable to the ones that have the cost of a nice car, that might just be right for you.

Raging Bull

1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV “The most iconic automobile of the 1980s. The poster-child for a generation!” We can only imagine what the crowd at the 1971 Geneva Auto Show must have thought when one of the most iconic Italian cars of all time was first introduced to the public. Calling the Countach, designed by Marcello Gandini, “groundbreaking” would be an understatement. With its angular design, eyecatching, upward-hinged “scissor doors,” this car would become a legend. Fourteen years later, in 1985, Lamborghini introduced the third generation, the QV, named for its four valve heads (Quattrovalvole). With minor body modifications, the most

prominent change was under the hood: The 5,167 cc DOHC V-12 engine was now fuel injected with 414 bhp (309 kW; 420 PS), rather than Weber carburetors. It also came with a five-speed manual transmission, front and rear independent suspension with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers, and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes. The beauty you see here is a U.S.-specification model that features straked sideskirts with vents to extract air for the rear brakes. Finished in “Nero” over a Nero leather interior, it comes with optional gold wheels and the iconic rear spoiler.

“It is better to enter a corner slow, and come out fast, than to enter a corner fast, and come out dead.” --Sir Stirling Moss

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

T

he impetus behind creating ”The Gentleman” was truly about telling men the truth. The truth about what it means to be a man, but more specifically, a sophisticated man.

The aim is to talk about the things our parents probably learned, and their parents definitely learned. Sadly, if you are under 40, you have potentially never heard the gentlemanly mannerisms coming to you in future issues, but I promise it will help you bring out your inner James Bond (without the rampant misogyny perhaps).

Don’t be afraid to touch her. You know where this is going I’m sure. Subtle hand or arm touches are ideal during conversation, and the lowerback hand “guide” through a doorway is always a winner.

I know you can keg stand with the best of them, but let’s maybe keep the drinking to a respectable level. Drink what you like, but save the shots for the second date.

If there are choices to make with respect to venue, time, activity or anything else, be decisive! If she wants you to decide, do it and be assertive. “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Even writing that was painful for me. Wishy washy is not attractive.

It should go without saying, but don’t forget to open doors, push her chair in, deal with her jacket for her, and make sure she is comfortable.

At the end of the night, walk her to her car or her door. If you are parting ways and she has to drive, ask her to call you to let you know she got home safely. Trust me…do it.

Unlike what the movie “Swingers” would have you believe, it is okay to show that you like a girl. You can drop the dismissive “too cool” persona. She wants to know you are thinking about her when she’s not around, and if you want to call the next day....do it! Just don’t tell your buddies.

If what follows offends you, it is possible you are holding the wrong magazine. Let’s start with the basics of dating etiquette: •

Be on time! Keeping a girl waiting so you can make an entrance or because you’re so “busy” is not cool. Trust me, you aren’t that important... show up when you say you will.

If you don’t have someone in your life on their death bed or on the verge of delivering a baby, put your phone away. If you pull out your phone to answer a text or take a call, you are showing that she is less important than whomever is on your phone. Someone should smack you. Nothing is more important than her.

She has already agreed to go out with you. You’re in! Don’t spend the whole time trying to convince her how amazing, rich, strong, “connected,” or smart you are. I know you want her to know, I get it, but do it subtly and quietly. Here is the one thing you must take away from this: She wants you to be interested in her, ask her questions, and listen to her answers. Pay attention to her, and learn about her. That information, if you retain it, will serve you well in the future!

Just so you know, she doesn’t want to hear about your exes. At all. That model you used to date doesn’t impress her. Let it go man.

Compliments are a great idea. Just make sure they are not creepy ones about her body. You will want to focus your attention mainly on her eyes. For those who missed that anatomy class in high school, the eyes are above the shoulders.

by Dr. Christian Brix

They say if you see a guy open a car door for a girl, either the car is new, or the girl is. Don’t be that guy. The beautiful thing is that everything above can work on the first date, but it can also work on the girl you have been with for 40 years. Chivalry and genuine interest are attractive, and it can only lead to great things either in life or later in the night!

2004 PORSCHE CARRERA GT

T

images by Robert Dening

he Porsche Carrera GT is a mid-engined RWD supercar that was manufactured by Porsche between 2004–2007 in Leipzig, Germany. The predecessor of Porsche’s technological marvel, the hybrid 918 Spyder supercar, features a screaming 612-hp 5.7L V10 and a good old fashioned 6-speed manual transmission. The engine actually originated from a dry-sump Le Mans-built V10, bored out to 5.7 liters and bolted right to the carbon-fiber chassis as an integral member. 0-100 is 3.57 seconds, the top speed 328 km/h.

knob used in the 917. Wood does not conduct drivetrain heat like most metals! The Carrera GT was offered with an optional carbon fiber shift knob in its second year of production.

“But why would an owner put a wooden shift knob in such a supercar?” you may wonder, looking at the pictures of our mint first-year production GT. That’s how it came standard. It is made of birch and ash to pay homage to the balsa wood shift

1,500 cars were originally planned. However, by the end of production on May 6, 2006 and due to changing airbag regulations in the United States, only 1,270 GTs had been sold, with at least 604 of those being in North America.

Another close look at the pictures will reveal another interesting GT characteristic. See the center lock nuts? They are red on the driver’s side, and blue on the passenger’s side. Porsche wanted to make sure that there is no mistake as to what side hub the nut goes on.

1930 Packard Phaeton

T

his 1930 Packard Phaeton must have turned many heads when it was brand-new and driven on Victoria roads. 86 years later, immaculately restored, and an award winner, it is owned by the grandson of the first owner, Norman Yarrow, who purchased the Model 740 with its Super-8 engine at Plimley Motors on Yates Street in Victoria. It was bought for $10,000, a huge sum at the start of the Depression, and it was almost not meant to be.

“It’s quite the story,” Chris Yarrow laughs. “My grandfather went in and asked what this big Packard might get for fuel economy. The salesman looked at my grandfather like he was from Mars and said: ‘I’m sorry Sir, if you have to ask that question, you can’t afford it!’ He was so annoyed, he did not return for a few days. But he went back and the car was still there and then he purchased it.”

friends, in 1971. Gammon owned the Classic Car Museum in downtown Victoria abd it took him less than a minute to find the name and phone number of the current owner, Art Fulawka. He had purchased the Packard in the mid-1950s, taking it into classic car shows before putting it in storage. Fulawka lived in Port Coquitlam at the time, later moving to Pender Island.

It remained in the family for a good seven years, before Norman Yarrow replaced it with a newer model. However, his old car came to fame when its then-owners allowed it to chauffeur King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during a visit to Victoria in 1939. It is because of this story that Chris wanted to find his grandfather’s car. “I was only 14 years old, but I was into cars.”

For the next 14 years, Chris visited the car twice a year. And offered to buy it. He even gave Fulawka the original fitted luggage which his family still had. Then, finally, in 1985 he got the phone call ... and became the proud owner of his family car.

With a photograph of the King and Queen in the car, young Yarrow went to see Murray Gammon, the father of two of his

“This was an old car,” Yarrow explains, “that was mostly original. It needed a complete restoration. I ran a business in the Northwest Territories, so I didn’t immediately restore it.” But when it was finally done, he took the car to visit the Fulawka family and took them out for a ride. The Packard is once again serving as a Yarrow family car. “I drive it downtown. I drive it all over the place,” Chris says, “And I hope my children will grow up to love it as much as I do!”

The Spirit of Tomorrow 1940 Norton-Oldfield “Teardrop” Streamliner. Built in Victoria.

Y

es, this futuristic-looking car was built in Victoria, between 1938 and 1940. Basil (“Barney”) Oldfield, who grew up and lived his life in the Prospect Lake area, designed and built pretty much anything, from trucks, tractors, to cars and houses (he even built the first house in the world that rotates around it’s axis!). Basil owned a welding shop, which was set up right next to his brother Brian’s gas and service station on Old West Saanich Road. This is where neighbours would see him test-drive an unadorned Dodge chassis with an apple-box instead of a seat.

Wanting to create the most streamlined vehicle possible, the hobby pilot had studied airflow and aerodynamics using a scale model of his design which he dipped into nearby Tod Creek. Oldfield recarved his wooden model several times until the way the water was flowing around it showed the most streamlined design, which would give it his nickname “Teardrop.” Way ahead of his time Oldfield used electric turn signals (a technology that wasn’t even used in Canada at that time) and placed the engine close to the centre of the vehicle assuming it would improve the handling. We also don’t think that anyone at that time had used “hidden” doorhandles that sit under a flap! The original engine, a Ford flat head V-8 engine was replaced by a Ford 289 cubic inch V-8 in the 1970s. After the car was displayed at Expo 1986 in Vancouver, sitting along side of John Lennon’s Rolls Royce, and as part of the deal with the organizer the car received a fresh paint job. The Teardrop is still owned by the Oldfield family and has been seen at shows over the last few years. For more information please visit www.spiritoftomorrow.com

1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

T

he Mustamg was first introduced in 1964 as a sporty “Pony car” to attract a younger generation of buyers to the brand. A few years later and with competition such as the Chevrolet Camaro with its 396ci fat-block and the Plymouth/ Dodge with their 383ci and 440ci High Performance engines, Ford saw the need to create a more powerful and aggressive version of the Mustang.

They redesigned the plattform and engine bay to accommodate larger engine blocks, from the 351 cu in (5.8 L) Windsor (351W) 2V motor with a 3 speed manual transmission up to the mighty 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet FE engine. In August 1968 Ford introduced the “Mach 1”, a performance-oriented option package for the 1969 model year. Other than the engine numerous visual and performance enhancing items such as matte black hood treatment with hood pins, hood scoop (including optional Shaker scoop), competition suspension, chrome pop-open gas cap, revised wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires, chrome exhaust tips, deluxe interior, and a rear deck spoiler were added. The Mach 1 was available in 16 exterior colors, three interior colors, and dozens of options, including cruise control. The Mach 1 was immediately popular and sold very well. 1969 was the most successful year with 72,458 units produced, but sales dropped over the next few years, especially when the Cobra II was introduced in 1976. images by Robert Dening
