A year ago the new partnership between ICON Okanagan and the Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group had been started, and this is our fifth issue since. Not to forget that we launched a sister publication with Iconic Motoring, which Olaf since has brought to Vancouver Island. And as we are always looking for a reason to celebrate ... here’s to our first anniversary! A big thank you to an amazing team, we can definitely be proud of what we have achieved. 01. THE SMART DOOR LOCK A cool design with the latest technology, Samsung offers several innovative door locks for maximum security. Some of them even offer a fingerprint scanner, and a sensor turns the unit on when it detects motion within a range of 70 cm. And should there be abnormal temperatures in your house it will give an alert. www.samsung.com 02. THE DYSON SUPERSONIC The hair dryer re‑thought. Quieter and less damaging to hair it uses a motor that is eight times faster and way smaller than any other hair dryer. So small, it sits in the handle! Comes with four heat settings, three airflow settings, and a cold shot. www.dysoncanada.ca 03. THE PERSONAL SUB It looks like a speed racer, but for $1.5m it is actually an incredibly easy and safe sub to drive. The all-electric Dragon gives riders six hours of underwater exploration and only two hours is needed to recharge. www.deepflight.com 04. THE WHALETONE PIANO Irresistibly beautiful, the Whaletone is half instrument, half aquatic-themed sculpture. An amazing instrument, designed by Robert Majkut, that rethinks classic design. At its heart is a flagship Roland SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine to generate the authentic sound of a string piano. Add a built-in list of 500 sounds, a four-channel amplifier, built-in speakers, and an Ivory Feel keyboard. Built only upon request, it’s the perfect thing to put inside your water-themed eco-mansion. www.whaletone.com

05. THE SHOCKING SHOTS It’s kind of what we have seen in a James Bond movie: The ultimate game of chance. Once the shot glass is filled, each player must place his finger inside one of the electric chambers and wait for a random shock to be emitted. The loser must then drink his shot . www.amazon.com 06. THE KANGOO JUMPS They are so much fun you will forget that you’re excercising. They reduce the impact by 40-80% when compared to conventional training shoes and provide the very best protection to your ankles, knees, hips, lower back, spinal column & joints. www.kangoojumps.com 07. THE HOVER CAMERA They call it a fling camera, not a drone: This foldable quadcopter looks like an external hard drive and is roughly the size of a book. The four propellers and motors are encased in a carbonfiber framework. Just unfold its “wings” and it’s ready to fly; let it follow you, do panorama shots, upload the videos to your phone. www.gethover.com 08. THE ENGINE CHAIR Standing at six and a half feet, with an equal width and diameter, this new chair has been fashioned out of a Boeing 737 engine. We couldn’t get an official price from the manufacturer, so it is most likely safe to say ... that most of us can’t afford it. www.fallenfurniture.com 09. The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

THE TRAVELLING MAN “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller There are very few ways to expand your horizons more than through travel. Not only because it gives you insight into other cultures, nature’s beauty, culinary delights, and different ways of life, but also because it helps one appreciate more where one comes from.

If you are the person who cannot understand that the rows in front of you on the plane will get off before you, be prepared to be tripped on your way by.

Whenever possible, do your best to not be the ignorant tourist. I’m sure they do have a burger at “America Cafe,” but since you travelled all that way... Maybe try the local cuisine?

Just so you know, if the shop owner or server you are communicating with doesn’t speak English, it doesn’t mean they are stupid. It means they don’t exist only to make sure you get what you need in this moment. Speaking louder and with a more condescending tone should help for sure (that was sarcasm).

When packing for your trip, try to think of your clothes in terms of “outfits.” I am aware that it doesn’t sound super manly, but life is much easier if you don’t have 5 pairs of pants and only one shirt. Always be prepared, but make sure you don’t bring a bag bigger than the one your girl brought.

With the above point: it is a great idea to know a few local phrases to make things easier on everyone. “Hello,” “thank-you,” “please,” and “bathroom” are a good start.

Caveat to the last one: you may have a bigger bag if it is to leave extra room incase she needs it for her purchases abroad.

If you are renting a car and can get a GPS unit, do it. I am literally writing this while we are lost between Amsterdam and Bruges. I only know that because we drove for 30 minutes and just passed the same building twice. Am I on a ring road??

Don’t forget your power adapters for the countries you will be visiting... electrical fires are frowned upon almost universally.

If you are staying with people, ALWAYS bring a gift. It can be flowers or an offer to make a dinner for everyone. Be sure they know you appreciate the hospitality.

Henry Miller said “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” I am writing this article from Europe, and I am absolutely surrounded by inspiration. When time and finances allow, get on a plane, in a car, or on a boat, and go learn about the world. Before we go though, it is important that we make sure we are qualified to battle the line-ups, the chaos, and our own ignorance. Here is a list to help with that: •

We are aware of the pain that checking a bag at the airport can be. It costs money, they will potentially lose it, and you have to wait for it on the other end. Nothing is as bad however, as being “that guy” frantically trying to stuff or punch an oversized carry-on bag into the overhead bin. Give up buddy... It’s not going to fit.

Always bring a swim suit.

On the airplane, for the love of all that is holy, go into your row, get your stuff together and THEN put your items in the overhead bin. There is nothing more frustrating than waiting to sit, while somebody stands blocking the aisle trying to decide what magazine to read while untangling their headphones.

Just so you know, whenever there is a line, chances are you will be arriving at your next spot in the same amount of time regardless of whether or not you are bumping the person in front of you every time the line stops. If you are 2 inches behind me and if you are 2 feet behind me, you will still reach the counter at the same time. I promise.

Seeing the world is part of most peoples’ bucket list, and it can be a life changing endeavour no matter how extensively you get to do it. How we carry ourselves can not only determine the quality of our experience, but it can also contribute to how people in other places experience us as Canadians. Gustave Flaubert said “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” Go away, explore, and be adventurous, but do it without the socks and sandals.

develop more understanding, and gratitude for everyone and everything. When you see the world firsthand, you realize we all share the same desires. We need excellent health, love, opportunities, safety, great food and clean water, and that connects us as one. That is a beautiful thing! Speaking of beautiful things, on Wednesday August 31st we are organizing a Travel Event at the Kelowna Art Gallery (1315 Water Street). The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and we will have delicious appetizers from Basil & Mint Restaurant & Bar, and refreshments from Sandhill Winery. We will be hosting presentations from three outstanding travel companies: Silversea cruise lines (Ocean cruises), Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Insight Vacations (land tours). Silversea cruise lines has a fleet of 9 intimate ultra-luxury ships that sail to over 800 intriguing destinations on all 7 continents. They have just announced their World Cruise itinerary that leaves on January 6th from Los Angeles in 2018. This cruise sails to 60 ports in 121 days. Now that’s an epic cruise!

If you can’t sail for that long, Silversea offers many shorter inspirational journeys to destinations such as: Asia, The Galapagos Islands, South America, Alaska, Polynesia, the Mediterranean, Antarctica, the Artic, Africa, Russian, the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand. They sail to more places than any other cruise line. On board, your butler is ready to help around the clock, and you will be pampered with richly personalized attention. Your spacious stateroom is eloquently furnished, and includes marble detailing in the bathroom, and a selection of luxury amenities. Silversea is renowned for their culinary excellence and they offer outstanding enrichment and wellness programs to compliment your global adventures. Another exciting travel option is river cruising. Uniworld has perfected the art of all-inclusive luxury river cruising. Their fleet of 21 vessels are essentially meticulously designed floating boutique hotels. Every ship in Europe has its’ own distinct theme and colour palette, original art, sumptuous furnishings, ultra-luxurious amenities, and is truly one-of-a-kind. Uniworld also offers unforgettable itineraries in Russia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt and India. Multigenerational travel is available, and if you are a solo traveler, they have special rates for you too!

Many people combine ocean and river cruises with a land tour, and some people just prefer to have their feet on terraferma. Insight Vacations has over 35 years of experience, offering perfectly planned land tours in 43 European countries. They also offer tours in India, Nepal, the Eastern Mediterranean, and North America. Whether you want to focus on one country or area, see the highlights of a few countries, go off the beaten path, or have a special interest like the Oktoberfest in Bavaria, or the Chelsea Flower Show, Insight Vacations will have something perfect for you. We look forward to seeing you at our Travel Event, where we hope to inspire you, and help you experience the power of travel!

Heaven by Boat by Steve MacNaull

F

rom bustling marinas and happening waterfront restaurants to early-morning waterskis and quiet coves, Okanagan Lake offers it all.

Accessing these summer delights by boat – be it a little runabout, sailboat, monster wakeboat, pontoon or yacht – is magical. My family, in our 20-foot Cobalt bowrider, have sussed out some prime spots on the lake and are willing to share the intel.

Gas Our boat is docked at Shelter Bay Marina, so its gas dock is our go-to for fuel, snacks and ice. Of course, it’s also open to the boating public, so stock up.

Waterski Before 7 a.m. is the choice time to waterski or wakeboard when the water is calm and boat traffic is almost nil. Our favourite locale is a quick zip under Bennett Bridge to West Harbour where the expanse of still lake awaits.

28

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Summer 2016

When you get up on the skis or wakeboard zoom north and you can take in the view of multi-million-dollar cliffside mansions as you skim across the water.

Downtown The new Downtown Marina stretching into the lake from the Sails sculpture is the best addition to downtown Kelowna in years. You can dock here for $10 for the first hour and $5 for every hour after that to take in a festival, eat steps away at Earls, Bacaro, Sliderz or The Salted Brick, grab an ice cream at Moolix or update your boating wardrobe at Surf Culture Clothing. There’s also a gas dock and shop here.

Paul’s Tomb At the base of Knox Mountain, Paul’s Tomb’s pebbled beach makes a nice stop for a swim. Or join the guys jumping off the adjacent outcropping of rocks.

Lake Okanagan Resort A beautiful 15-kilometre ride north from the bridge to

the resort includes wide-open water, a stretch in front of Bear Creek Park and cliffs where you may spy some bighorn sheep and find water serene enough for an afternoon waterski. The resort has a big new dock where you can tie up, get gas or trek up the steep hill for lunch on the patio overlooking the lake.

The Cove This West Kelowna resort is 10 kilometres south of the bridge and offers yet another choice locale to dock and stay for lunch on the patio at farm-to-table Bonfire Grill. On the way, stop in Gellatly Bay if the water is tranquil for a dip off the boat, waterski, wakeboard or tube.

pub Gasthaus on the Lake is always apropos.

In the middle Rather than always being destination driven, simply cruise out to the middle of the lake and stop. Stare up at the blue sky, let the gentle movement of the boat lull you into a nap, swim if you want, read, pull a beverage from the cooler or chat to family and friends. Only use your smartphone to listen to a summer mix of music. Do not text, check social media or send an email. After all, this is high-season in the Okanagan and you are on the lake in a watercraft.

Give your kids a free range childhood at Fawn Run at The Ponds Does today’s hectic lifestyle leave you longing for a simpler time, when things weren’t quite so rushed? Have you been thinking the days of children riding bikes, climbing trees and playing outside are gone for good? It sometimes feels that way, doesn’t it? That those simple pleasures are all but forgotten in our plugged-in, instant-on world of smart phones, tablets and video games? Where we dash madly from one activity to another without really taking the time to savour what’s real, what’s important? But if you’re ready for a change – if you’re ready to slow down and truly appreciate all that life and nature have to offer – then you’re ready for Fawn Run at The Ponds. This new development in the highly sought-after community of The Ponds in Upper Mission is where families are embraced, challenged and inspired to reconnect with nature. It’s where they can – once again – recapture that sometimes elusive but wonderful rhythm that can only be found in the great outdoors.

Kelowna’s most desirable Upper Mission neighbourhood.

Let’s imagine for a moment what having nature at your doorstep really looks like.

The first offering of unique home sites will be released this spring with prices starting at $242,500.

It’s a neighbourhood where families can explore, discover and wonder at all that nature has to offer. Where they can make the most of every square inch of backyard playing space. Fawn Run is a modern, new community with a vision that’s pure and simple. It’s based on the premise that we’re healthier when we feel connected, we’re more productive when we feel inspired and we’re happiest when we’re living an active, balanced lifestyle. Surrounded by 90 acres of greenspace, over 22 kilometres of walking trails and five lush ponds, home has never felt this good.

This community encourages diversity and has set up a homebuilding program that allows buyers to select their own architect and builder to craft a home that is unique to them. That means streets lined with homes that are distinctive and reflective of the personal styles of the families that live in them.

Fawn Run’s thoughtfully planned amenities are abundant and the community takes its cues from the beauty that surrounds it. An intricate trail system connects private enclaves of homes to the nearby lakes, waterfalls, woodland areas and grasslands that surround it. Perched atop a spectacular mountain plateau, Fawn Run s is ideally situated alongside the untouched wooded southern slopes of

The development will bring neighbours together with parks, playing fields and walkable urban amenities designed to integrate modern living with outdoor recreation in the best possible way.

It makes sense, when you think about it. We were all designed as individuals so shouldn’t our homes be one of the greatest reflections of our personal style? It’s refreshing to see a development that recognizes and respects freedom of expression and can envision master planned communities as something more than cookie-cutter suburbia. To learn more about this special opportunity visit the Fawn Run show home at 5730 Mountainside Drive, past Chute Lake Road in the Upper Mission.Or visit them online at www.fawnrun.ca.

design projects, as well as filming her TV Show “Let’s Shop” airing on 45 international networks, and Sam, NYC-trained in both interior design and fashion, came together to create a unique aesthetic which truly reflects their travel and life experiences. Cheryll’s husband Roger well he’s the handy guy who makes all the girls’ dreamy design visions come to life at home. here is no better example of Okanagan-based interior design firm, Rock House Style’s, approach to design than the lakefront home the business owners live in.

The Hobson Road house features all the elements Cheryll Gillespie and Sam Shakura are known for; global perspective, unpredictability, luxurious personalization, and edge. Cheryll, with her vast experience working in Asia on award-winning residential and commerical

“Interior design, like fashion, is art we live our lives in,” said Shakura. “We want to design spaces for our clients that truly represent who they are, spaces that make their lives better each and every day” said Gillespie. Each client has different design needs, desires and budgets that pertain to their lifestyle. “It is our job to extract that information and with that, create

beautifully tailored spaces our clients love filled with things that make them smile.” The Rock House features adventurous rooms that walk on the wild side, showcasing designer couture wallpaper (think Christian Lacroix, Armani and élitis), leathered granite countertops, a chalkboard menu in a true chef’s kitchen, one-of-a-kind mosaic art walls, and a solid white marble bathtub. “We designed the entire home with the sole purpose of entertaining in mind; our family has a fiery passion for culinary arts and of course, Okanagan wine, so we incorporated an 800-bottle glass floor wine cellar that lifts on an elevator into the main living area” said Gillespie. Their dream home had to be ‘animal-friendly’ as they are huge animal rescuers and lovers - there are precious pet moments throughout the home (custom built-in dog beds by the kitchen window, an eight foot koi pond in the foyer, a bonsai tree zen garden courtyard with a bird house, etc.). “Nature is a persistent muse because we live in the Okanagan,” she added. The house is all about indoor-outdoor living .” The risk-taking aesthetics of the home also include custom chandeliers and light fixtures, all designed by Rock House Style. The monochromatic palette of greys, whites and natural textures allows for their eccentric art to really pop, and for the grand scale of the architectural open layout to really shine. The design firm continuously mixes raw, organic elements with curated elegant materials, creating beautiful harmonious environments that feel natural and serene, yet at the same time enticing and edgy. Cheryll, having a foundation in visual arts education, is never shy to graffiti a wall or two (an affordable and fun way to add a splash of individualized creativity to your home.) The house is infused with the motherdaughter design duo’s signature style, full of adventure and soul. It is whimsical with its eclectic high-style statement pieces and materials, yet fluid in its comfortable ‘loungy’ vibe. And then there are the juxtapositions — antique and contemporary, rough

and polished, grit and glamour. “That’s what makes this space so exciting, creating layers and playing with textures - which ultimately has just as much as an impact on a room as color or proportion does,” said Shakura. It represents the dynamic taste and style of its occupants. The house rock ‘n’ Summer 2016

rolls with these daring combinations. The sexy, alluring rooms with their sassy attitude, classy bespoke interior accents and unprecedented attention to detail are true conversation-starters.

“Our creative process is about experimentation, solving problems, being bold and having a free spirit,” said Shakura. “We all deserve our own personal ‘dream home’ that welcomes us in from a long day at work with a sensational hug”.

CHARMING LUXURY. A Green Bay Estate. West Kelowna.

T

his waterfront home in the picturesque and prestigious Green Bay Estate community in West Kelowna can be described in many ways. It is livable luxury at its finest, featuring elements that create a cohesive peaceful atmosphere that’s as sensuous and velvety soft as it is dramatic and elegant. . Once again it was the owners of Kelowna-based interior design firm Rock House Style, the mother and daughter power team of Cheryll Gillespie and Sam Shakura, who gave this house a very unique touch, staging it with many rare, unique and quite often innovative decorational items, furniture and appliances. Feng Shui was used in the whole home to create a harmonious space. This house is perfect for entertainment. A walk-through bar and wine room leads to the open concept living and dining area that is both stunning yet totally functional.

okanagan dream homes

LIVE THE DREAM. A Granite Chateau Estate. East Kelowna.

By Ross Freake

He sold Saxx and in 2011, he and his wife, Ria, moved back to Kelowna to start a construction company and a family. “I always knew I would be doing real estate and construction. I was raised in a construction family — my grandpa had a construction company and my dad (Bruce) did, too. “My grandpa, Rudy Kitsch, had Rudy’s Trucking way back in the day, and my dad’s company is Belvedere Place Development. I respect quality and design, those are the two things I’m really into, and that’s how I got into it.”

T

rent Kitsch likes the idea of building things that will outlast him. He did that with Granite Chateau Estate, which impressed the Tommie judges so much they gave him two gold statues for it — excellence in single family detached home $3M-$5M, and excellence in kitchen design (new home) $150K and over. “I was working with my dad on construction sites for as long as I can remember as a very young guy,” said the owner of Kitsch Construction Corp., who went to university in Las Vegas on a baseball scholarship, got a business degree and then a masters in entrepreneurship at University of Western Ontario in London. “I really enjoy construction, respect the trade and like the fact you’re building something that is going to outlast you.” In spite of the fact that he created Saxx underwear and turned it into a successful company — wowing the entrepreneurs on the Dragons’ Den so much they supported him — he never wavered in his desire to be a builder.

42

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Summer 2016

Kitsch thinks the skills he needed to start and develop Saxx, an idea he came up with while fishing in Alaska, are equally applicable to construction and building houses. “(Saxx) was a great experience, and a great lesson in creating something out of nothing. I love creativity and design, and combing those two things. I’m learning all the time. My skill set applies to both businesses.” But he credits his wife, who works on design, his five employees and his team of sub-trades with turning Granite Chateau Estate into an eye-catching and award-winning house. “I don’t like to pitch ourselves too hard, I like our product to speak for itself; we take our time and do things right.” Granite Chateau Estate, with stone and materials, imported from all over the world, speaks loudly — not only to the skill and imagination of the builder and his team, but the time and care he took creating it, from conception to reality. “It’s one of the nicest homes in the province and it will last 500, 1,000 years,” said its proud creator. “It’s built out of

concrete and stone.” Kitsch and his team were thinking big when they designed this 10,000 square foot, Tuscan house set in a 20-acre vineyard that is reminiscent of Mediterranean living. It’s also proof that a picture is worth a thousand words. You need to see it to believe it. “If any one property inspired it, it was Sting’s villa in Tuscany.”

Mozart transformed the Laurel Packinghouse into an “Enchanted Forest “ on May 13, 2016 with Opera Kelowna’s Annual Fundraiser. In true operatic style, guests were “enchanted” by an evening of music, entertainment, food & drink for a memorable experience set in a captivating forest-like environment. Opera Kelowna’s Artists performed excerpts from this summer’s main stage Opera production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” Net proceeds from this event go toward funding the summer intensive training program and the full mainstage opera performance with professional leads, ballet, chorus and orchestra this August. “Until now Kelowna residents would have to travel to see professional opera.” says Artistic Director, Alexandra Babbel. www.operakelowna.com 1) Sandra Chapman, Sonya Peitsch, Debra Martin & Sonja Lyons 2) Teresa May & Alisha Slattery 3) Nancy Ling and Amanda Haugan 4) Daniel Kim & Katherin Kim 5) Dorie Blais & Martine Parent 6) Curtis Krouzel & Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel 7) Pamina (Caroline Craig) & Tamino (Conagher Jones) 8) Chelsea Robinson

! OWNING !

Business Property:

by John-Erik Grain

LEASING ! vs

Should you own the real estate that your business operates from or should you lease it from someone else? This is a critical decision for business owners and may mean the difference between sustained profits and bankruptcy. Many business owners take a hard line on owning the property and others take a hardline on investing that money into the business instead. Each business case is uniquely different but in general, if you plan to run your business from its current location for 6-8 years or more, you are probably better off to purchase the property if its available.

There are several issues to consider when making this decision:

Down payment – As a small business it may be difficult to come up with a down payment considering a loan to value ratio of 60% Allocation of available funds – The money that would be used as a down payment for the real estate may be better used when injected in to the business instead. Perhaps your business is in need of rebranding or new equipment that would increase sales and/ or margins. Paying off debt is often desirable as well. Business Growth – Your business may outgrow the space. Forecasting and growth strategies should be accurate and used when considering the size of space required. Maintenance Hassles – Buildings depreciate. Roof repairs, HVAC upgrades, snow clearing, etc. can be landlord responsibilities. Consider that it will take time and money to coordinate these activities as a property owner. You may not have the time or the desire to take this on. Real Estate Market Risk – Renting space provides some operational flexibility. Relocating your business is often advantageous for exposure and economic fluctuations. It also provides for some rent

56

negotiating leverage in a declining market. As an owner, property value may not appreciate as much as expected leaving you with some losses and/or vacancies.

Consider a 2400 square foot space receiving $10 per square foot in a market that supports a 7% capitalization rate. Perhaps its in the Okanagan with a triple net figure of $7 per square foot. If you lease this space, you’re paying off someone else’s building in about 14 years. If you purchase it with 40% down at 5% and with the same monthly payment, its paid off in about 11 years and you own a $340,000 asset; not to mention the benefit of any property appreciation. There are other considerations like inflation, tax implications, opportunity costs, and upfront costs (deposits, down payments, fees, environmental reports, etc.) that will need to be discussed with your Business Broker and REALTOR. From this data and these basic assumptions, we can crunch some numbers to estimate that the breakeven point for Leasing versus Buying the space your business operates from will likely be in the 6-8 year range. When making this decision, it is critical to understand the cash requirements for your businesses growth over this

timeframe to ensure you avoid under capitalization. Business Brokers deal with business owners who regularly face these challenges. High Performance Business Brokers are also licensed REALTORs and understand this process and the costs/benefits associated with each unique business case. Business Brokers can guide business owners through the entire process and may ensure your transaction completes expeditiously and that the owners are satisfied with the result. Don’t leave your next big business decision up to chance. Carefully consider the pros and cons of buying versus leasing the property your business operates from. Remember, each business case is unique. Contact your Business Broker for clarity and direction.

patient to achieve their treatment goals, and once they are achieved, re‐treatment is not expected. Belkyra treatment starts at around $1,500, depending on dosage. Most patients will need two to four treatments. Side effects include swelling, bruising, pain and numbness, all which typically subside within days. Clinical studies have already found Belkyra contributes to new collagen creation, which correlates to tightening of the skin.

Dr. Janna Bentley (Medical Director)

D

id you know that according to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many consumers are bothered by their double chin (67%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (69%)? The condition, which can make you look older and heavier, is called submental fullness, but otherwise known as fat under the chin.

There is real interest among male patients, who frankly may not care as much about weathered skin or wrinkles – but who are annoyed or even embarrassed by a double chin – maybe something they didn’t have 10 years ago.

It can be difficult to get rid of on your own, because submental fullness can be influenced by multiple factors – such as genetics, weight gain and aging – sometimes, no matter how much you diet the fat in this area may not go away. There is no skin cream or exercise to lose the fat under your chin! New non‐surgical treatment options are now available that target and eliminate fat under the chin. Health Canada (and the FDA by the way) recently approved a quick and easy injectable treatment that can be completed in office 15 to 20 minutes. Enter Belkyra™ – the treatment which specifically targets submental fat. The treatment’s main ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule identical to the ones produced in the gallbladder that aid in the digestion and absorption of fat. With targeted injections into the submental fat, the fat cells break open. Then, the body does its normal and continual cycle of getting rid of old and damaged cells.

Treating the double chin was largely ignored until recently because we simply didn’t have many good choices. However, in the past year, CoolSculpting Mini technology arrived to help with chin fat – and now this exciting new Belkyra option… both targeted at re-defining the jawline. We now have great options. If you are one of many who are bothered by a double chin, there are now at least two options that might be right for you. Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic was one of the first clinics in Kelowna approved to use Belkyra. Consult with a physician and cosmetic medical expert for the treat options that are right for you.

Once destroyed and flushed out, the cells can no longer accumulate fat. Long lasting effects are normal: this procedure is customized to each

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

WELCOME TO ... THE COMFORT ZONE! “Silently watching Netflix in cotton pj’s with unshaved legs and a bag of Doritos is not a terrible thing. It’s a milestone to celebrate!”

There is a pivotal point in time in your relationship when you’ve hit the comfort zone. Some couples panic and think of this as being doomed… but is it really a bad thing? As a woman, I remember those mornings when I would try to wake up early so I could drag my disheveled self into the bathroom to fix my hair and brush my teeth before my guy woke up… And how about the entire drive home on date night wondering how in the heck I was going to gracefully execute getting out of my Spanx without looking like a sausage about to explode! – Guys, there is a lot of over-thinking that goes on in the early stages of a relationship, which is why getting into the comfort zone is entirely welcoming.

sudden she stops and needs to pluck a rogue eyebrow hair – get used to it, one day it will be a rogue ear hair. When she doesn’t shave her legs, she no longer hides it – she is so vocal about it that it may as well be posted on Facebook. I’ll never forget the time my boyfriend went to grab a stray hair and broadcasted “oh… that one is attached.”… Mortifying. Lingerie I mean… what lingerie? Those cute little outfits are now ammo. Those are tucked away for when she wants something, or needs forgiveness for something. But come on, the soft 100% cotton getups are pretty adorable too. Don’t feel bad when lingerie becomes a special occasion, even Shakira has flannels… (Maybe? Hopefully.)

Signs you’re in the zone: Netflix You both snuggle up on the couch, turn on Netflix, spend 37 minutes trying to decide what to watch - only to decide that you both just want to go to bed. You’ve marathon-watched most of the TV shows and you’re left with the critically acclaimed documentaries that you’d probably really enjoy, but just can’t seem to get into. Food A romantic dinner sharing a margherita pizza at Bordello’s downtown has turned into the two of you ordering your own pizza and having no shame finishing it. A bag of Doritos is also no longer having a handful and putting the bag away for the night; you now eat enough to show off how much cheese powder you have stuck to your fingers – and then lick ‘em clean. Silence In the beginning you’d stress over silence. Did it mean you had nothing in common? Were you already out of things to say to each other? Silence in the comfort zone is epic… how amazing is it to go for a walk and be perfectly content to walk in silence for a while? This is total comfort. Next time it’s quiet, don’t immediately start planning your exit strategy. Grooming You’re having an intense conversation and then all of a

My opinion is that the comfort zone is amazing! It’s about realizing and appreciating that you have fallen in love with your best friend – yet, there are a few things that will never get too comfortable… •

Using each other’s names - terms of endearment are cute, but hearing your other half randomly use your first name is sexy.

Kissing - a peck in passing is lovely, but eye contact and a REAL kiss?! Hello butterflies! Yes, please!

The “gentle” touch – hugs and cuddles are fabulous, but an unexpected hand across the back, or a kiss on the forehead… WOW.

Moral of the story? Silently watching Netflix in cotton pj’s with unshaved legs and a bag of Doritos is not a terrible thing. It’s a milestone to celebrate!

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

Rose Sexsmith Interview: Rick Maddison

RM: So, tell me about your present state of mind, right now? RS: Well, actually to tell you the truth, I was having a really emotional day. RM: Why is that? RS: I’m not sad, I am having a leaky day. And, I am so glad I’m a woman because I just had a leaky moment and I ran into some friends I hadn’t seen in a while and it was so good, and I cried and I was so like, “I’m so happy to see you, sorry I’m having a leaky day,” and he said, “You’re lucky, we look silly when we cry!” RM: Those days come. How do you deal with that? RS: I totally accept it. Totally. It’s okay, I give myself permission to do this. It’s like sneezing or any other natural secretion. RM: Would you classify today as “Super Leaky”? RS: Yes, super leaky! This is what happens to post-menopausal women who don’t go through PMS anymore, we have little outbursts every so often. No, life is good. I am loving my life right now, Rick. RM: Is there a saying or a thought that strikes you as a way you want to live your life? RS: “Everything will be okay in the end and if it isn’t okay, it’s not the end.” So, I really like that and a friend of mine made me this little magnet and it said, “If you don’t like something, change it and if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” There’s so much wisdom in fridge magnets, don’t you think? RM: Indeed. What qualities would you most like to possess? RS: I would like to be as accepting as I can of everyone, because I don’t know what’s

going on so [to be] accepting. Forgiving, I think that for me, after forgiveness comes freedom and without it, I’m stuck. So, a forgiving person, and accepting and loving, I want to be alive! I want to live. I want to be aware, self-aware, especially. RM: When you hire, what qualities do you look for in that person to try and hire? RS: Now I’m not saying this is for every business, but it worked for mine. So, I was a waitress until 1989. I was a bar waitress. I sucked at serving food, I was really great at serving alcohol and in 1989 we bought our first business. It was a bar up at Big White which ended up being called ‘Roses on the Ridge’ and we got up there and we did all the work ourselves until it came time for us to start hiring, and I had only ever been a bar waitress and so I was saying to one of the regular condo owners that I had gotten to know a bit, “Oh, I gotta start hiring people. I have no idea where to start.” And she said, “Watch how they walk.” And Rick, and that is how I hired people. I mean I checked references and I also had to like them and everything else, but I always watched how they walked. In our business, food and beverage, you have to be able to hustle! (Laughs) RM: Give me one or two things you like about Kelowna and things you would like to see improved? RS: Well, I love how this community stands up any time something, people, anything is in need. This community comes together faster than I think anybody does. We live in an amazing part of the world, number one, and all the people that have settled here seem to you know, have that same thing in common. We’re all humaniSummer 2016

“Everything will be okay in the end and if it isn’t okay, it’s not the end.” tarians, I guess. And what would I change about it? Well, the traffic! RM: Tell me about this walk you’re going to do. What drew you to this walk? RS: Well, I love that it’s a pilgrimage. It’s 500 miles and this has been going on since the 13th century, so I love the thought of all of the people for the past 700 years or more, walking this same path and I love the idea of going to sleep in one town and walking to the next one and all the beautiful, interesting vistas we’re going to see and the people that we’re going to meet and even the way the people live in every village. It’s the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Walk. The way of St. James, if you look it up. There’s a movie called ‘The Way’ and it’s with Martin Sheen and it’s about a portion of that walk. RM: What would shock or surprise people to know about you? RS: Surprise them to know about me? I don’t cook! (Laughs)

Summer Pet Safety Tips Avoiding Heat Stroke, Dehydration in Dogs, Cats “It’s summertime and the living is easy,” or so goes the Sam Cooke song. Summertime means fun, sun, and hopefully lots of play outdoors. But as much fun as summer can be for you and your pet, there are a few safety tips that will hopefully make the warmest of all seasons safe and carefree for all concerned. Apply Sunscreen That’s right, you should apply sunscreen on your if he or she spends more than just a few minutes outside everyday in the hot summer sun. Pets with light skin and short or thin hair coat are particularly prone to sunburn or skin cancer. The sunscreen should be fragrance free, non-staining, and contain UVA and UVB barriers similar to sunscreens made for humans. Consult your veterinarian, but there are some sunscreens available made specifically for pets. Provide Plenty of Water, Plenty of Shade Dehydration in dogs and cats is a real possibility during the summer, especially if your pet is the type to run and play outside for extended periods without drinking sufficient water. Telltale signs of dehydration include dry gums, loss of skin elasticity, excessive drooling. Don’t let it come to this. Give your active pet plenty of playtime breaks in the shade with access to fresh water. Don’t Leave ‘Fluffy’ in the Car You may think leaving your pet in a car for a few minutes is no big deal, but it can quickly lead to heat stroke in dogs and cats.

In bright sunshine, your car acts like an oven, becoming much hotter inside than the outside air even. In fact, on a sunny 70 degree day, your car can heat up to over 100 degrees within minutes. So, either take your pet with you or leave him or her at home during shopping trips. Watch for Unknown Grassy Knolls Pets love to run, play and just investigate grassy areas. But did you know many lawns are treated with fertilizers and pesticides during the summer? Keep your pet safe this summer by keeping them off unknown grassy areas or find a safe spot in your neighborhood or city, like a dog park. Remember, not all grass is created equal.

8 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Dog in the Summer 1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car; 2. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water; 3. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside; 4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day; 5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) because it can burn your dog’s paws; 6. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means of cooling off; 7. Keep your dog free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heartworms – consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet; 8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it’s appropriate for your pet), and apply sunscreen to your dog’s skin if she or he has a thin coat.

If you have questions or concerns about your pet, call us any time! 74

VARIETAL IS THE SPICE OF LIFE 2016 BC Best of Varietal Awards

T

by Dan Walton

o determine the cream of the crop, each year the British Columbia Best of Varietal Wine Competition brings together many shrewd judges to undergo a tedious tasting session. Unfortunately, no one person has the time or tolerance to thoroughly enjoy a glass of each and every wine, and since there’s a near-countless number of producers, popularity contests are needed to help the good music rise above the noise.

Only a few short years ago I was a frugal student who would only scan the liquor store shelves for the cheapest bottle of whatever was on sale. Now here I am - thanks to the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society.

When consumers and restauranteurs come across a bottle marked as one of the BC Best of Varietal Wine Awards, they don’t have to worry about disappointment. Hundreds of wines fought in the trenches for only a handful to be declared winners. “A well-marketed, professional wine competition that is respected by the industry will result in significant incremental sales of a wine that wins a medal or, one of the Best of Varietal awards,” said Blair Baldwin, General Manager, the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society. “Consumers look to this competition as a benchmark to kick off the spring and summer wine tourism season. They’ll be quickly turning on their barbecues and going, ‘It’s summertime, who has the best rosé?’” In an effort to seem unique, some people will argue that what’s

76

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

popular isn’t always what’s best.

Columbia.

And there is some truth to that - just look at how many albums Nickelback has sold.

“We exercise a high degree of professionalism in organizing this competition,” Baldwin said. “Meaning we seek professional judges including the best sommeliers, and wine judges with strong experience and credentials. It is a competition created by the wine industry and run by the Okanagan Wine Festivals with complete honour and objectivity - that’s why the industry gives it so much support and consumers pay attention.”

But the idea of different strokes for different folks only goes so far. There’s a reason why Fruitopia costs more than Minute Maid - it’s not like the simulated flavours in one can of fruit concentrate costs more to produce than another, but consumers are willing to pay more for a quality product. Fruitopia deserves its prettier packaging. And just like grape juice, the best wines deserve better marketing. But unlike Fruitopia’s taste testing, the BC Best of Varietal Wine Awards isn’t about perfecting one particular brand, it’s about advocating for the diverse grape varietals grown and made into great wines in British Summer 2016

Even though I haven’t yet had the opportunity to build myself a brain network that can articulate the full spectrum of my experiences with wine, my sensors can still tell me if it tastes good or not. However, my young taste pallet was unable to find meaning for most of the adjectives that were being used during the tasting, and being surrounded by wine

connoisseurs, listening to descriptions that meant nothing to me, reminded me of the years I spent in French class. The good news is that the judges, while using their own descriptors, were very comforting to me and advised that, in the end, its whether you like the wine or not. From that point, I recognized that they are doing what we all like to do with wine – taste and evaluate it for yourself. Since all the wines are identified only with a number, it became a lot of fun to play at being a judge even though my scores didn’t count. The judges scores were then compiled and brought back to the table for them to determine which wines move forward for consideration as worthy as Silver, Gold and which one of that flight of varietal deserves the title of Best of Varietal for that class.”

There was a discussion at my table as to whether we should support the wine that sits best with us personally, or the one we think would achieve the most commercial success. The consensus was that we have to stick to our own guns - what kind of judges would we be if we based our opinions on the presumption of popularity? I found myself wondering if I was the only person thinking about intoxication during the tasting. There were more than 500 wines being tasted in a span of hours, yet none of the judges even joked about being tipsy. The most effective measure we exercised to prevent drunkeness required us to spit our wine into a bucket instead of swallowing it, which felt very counter-intuitive to do while surrounded by such a chic crowd. And to keep the taste pallets

from burning out, we neutralized our mouths with bread and water. Even though it is a simple combination, it worked well to keep me hydrated and nourished. Upon reflection, I realize that my first several escapades with wine highlighted the lifestyle of an immature person, but they’ve helped me to mark my personal growth. With the honour of being invited to participate, it has allowed me to learn more about our finely-crafted wines in a way I could never have imagined. Seeing these professionals work hard at a trade they love makes me more aware of how much we all have to learn in life. And how hard work brings its rewards. Returning to a concept previously explored to find new meaning for myself is pretty amazing. And, you know, so are our wines.

C.C. Jentsch Cellars Oliver, BC

T

he toughest conditions yield the best grapes, and for grower Chris Jentsch, tough conditions led to a decision that has yielded incredibly sweet rewards. Like a cat with nine lives, the big blue building that 3rd generation orchardist Chris built as a fruit packing house has seen both fire and a devastating landslide that demolished Chris’ nearby home, along with those of his neighbours. Upon recovering from this disaster came another blow: the primary purchaser of the vineyard’s 84 acres of grapes was cancelling their contract…they were cutting back production, they said . Some would have put the farm up for sale. But Chris decided to convert the packing house into a winery. 2013 saw the first vintage produced in the new facility; all estate fruit, all from mature vines and much of it from the soon-to-be official Golden Mile Bench Sub-appellation. It was one of these wines that would go on to shake up the national and international wine scene.

First, the 2013 Syrah won a Platinum medal at the National Wine Awards of Canada (only 14 were awarded out of 1400 wines, yep that’s 1%), and then, the Regional Trophy for Best Red Wine in North America at Decanter Asia! The one that makes winemaker Amber Pratt smile the most though, was the result from the Judgement of B.C. with famed wine critic Steven Spurrier. It recreated the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris wine tasting depicted in the movie Bottle Shock. 6 of B.C.’s finest Syrahs were pitted against 6 internationally acclaimed Syrahs. The C.C. Jentsch Syrah placed first. Says Amber “I watched the movie when I heard about the competition and it makes Spurrier seem awful. But then to meet him, have him taste my wine and say ‘keep. doing. this.’ I will never forget it”. To try this wine and more, the wine shop is open daily 10am-6pm. Bring your RV, bring your bike, there’s tons of parking and a picnic spot next to the creek. Buy a case and it ships free to you in Canada!

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

YES, YES, YES! No, not what you think - we are just happy that it is Summer! Barbeque and patio season is here, folks! C’mon, we’ve been waiting for this. The patios are open, a t-shirt is all we need, and we are no longer into heavy reds. It’s aummertime, we can’t keep up with all the parties and outdoor entertainment. And finding the right wine to pair with your summer meals, snacks, and evenings on the patio can elevate your party to the next level. So let us show you some wines that are refreshing, crisp, and complement the classic foods of summer.

2015 KITSCH ESTATE RIESLING

2013 TANTALUS OLD VINES RIESLING NATURAL BRUT

2014 CEDARCREEK PINOT GRIS

The Kitsch Estate Winery is one of the newest wineries in the Okanagan. Started by Trent and Ria Kitsch, the winery and vineyard occupies a plateau in northeast Kelowna.

With only 150 cases made this wine is poised for special celebrations and those seeking something very unique from BC.

“In our upper CedarCreek Vineyard, nature helps us select just the right moment to harvest the Pinot Gris. Over the years, we’ve noticed that black bears enjoy the same level of ripeness of flavour as we do. When they start making their way under our “bear-proof” fence, we know it’s time to start picking. Very carefully.”

Bright straw in colour, the wine opens with a persistent, fine bead. Aromas of lemon and lime with wet stones waft from the glass – fresh and complex. The palate is lush yet holds great tension with mineral undertones and hints of grapefruit flesh and crisp Granny Smith apple. A classic Champagne character pairs beautifully alongside concentrated flavours and naturally bright acidity.

Grant Biggs, who was an assistant winemaker at Tantalus Vineyards and at Mt. Boucherie Vineyards, is the winemaker at Kitsch. The vineyard’s largest planting is Riesling; two blocks on appr. 5 acres, planted in 2013. “I don’t want to source fruit from the south,” Grant says, “and the terroir is great for a Riesling.” The 2015: Tropical fruit with a bright dash of citrus and warm spice. “Okanagan magic,” as Grant describes it. $22.00 Alc./Vol.: 12.7%

2015 C.C. JENTSCH SMALL LOT SERIES CHARDONNAY 2015 was a warmer year and it shows in the glass with ripe pear, golden apple, orchard blossoms, and a touch of vanilla on the nose. Antico Pizza Napoletana Kelowna Chef Tony Katsabanis opened the doors to Kelowna’s first and only authentic Neapolitan pizzeria a year ago. Katsabanis who has been in the food business since he was 14 years old, owned restaurants in Manitoba and Toronto before falling in love with BC. “Neapolitan pizza was also a hobby of mine, because it wasn’t really marketable back then,” explains Katsabanis. “I had gone to cooking school in Naples, Italy and became certified with the AVPN, the Neapolitan Pizza Association.” Antico offers half a dozen Neapolitan pizzas with fresh ingredients, fresh salads, soups, and much more. “The pizzas are about a third of the calories of a traditional pizza. People’s palates are more sophisticated these days than they were 20 years ago,” Katsabanis says. “A Neapolitan pizza cooks in about 60 to 90 seconds. People are in a rush downtown, I thought this would be the perfect fit.” 347 Bernard Ave. Kelowna, BC t: 236.420.4000

the last word...

What We Love About The Okanagan

Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to the lovely Laura Draycott, owner of Wink-i-wear, about what makes the Okanagan so special.

1

2

Kalamoir Park: I like little secluded beaches, and Kalamoir is my favourite. You can take a paddle board or kayak, there’s a beautiful little beach, and hardly anyone there. Pritchard and Willow beaches are also nice. I find the Westside beaches are less touristy in July and August.

3

Shopping the Pandosy Corridor: I love the Lower Mission area, from Urban Fare down to Raymer Avenue. There are loads of wonderful little inde-pendent shops. It has a nice ‘Yale Town’ feel.

4

Restaurants: So many favourites! Quails’ Gate, corner table on the patio – it doesn’t get better than that. The Bouchons Bistro is romantic, authentic, French. The Barrel Top Grill at Little Straw Vineyards, on the deck for lunch is always great. The chef is such a character he is so funny.

5 6

Dinner en Blanc: Love it. Support it. Dress up decadently for it. It’s like a surprise party for yourself. You know you are going to a party but don’t know where it is. Last year Wink-iwear had a photo-booth there, which was really successful. You pack your picnic, your wine, your tablecloth, have a fabulous evening, then you pack up and go home; the next day no one knows you were even there.

Hiking: I don’t know if I will ever be able to hike all the trails in the Okanagan but I’m going to try. Bear Creek Trail is one of my favourites.

Myra Canyon Trestles: we love biking up there. Very scenic & not too challenging, it’s a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

94

ICON OKANAGAN

9

Concerts at Wineries: I set my alarm at 9:59am to buy my tickets for the Mission Hill summer concert series the minute they go on sale. We have seen Tony Bennett, Chris Isaak, and this year we are going to Melissa Etheridge and Michael Bolton. The venue is first class – it’s worth the price of admission just to sit in that beautiful natural amphitheater. It’s like nothing else in the world. Cedar Creek is the same – we saw Tom Cochrane there, and Colin James at Tinhorn Creek. It is amazing that we have this on our doorstep.

10

Devour: This is one of my favourite events. It is a wine and food pairing event with more wine and food than you could possible eat in one night. It’s held at the Okanagan College, and it has such a great atmosphere.

www.iconokanagan.com

Summer 2016

11

12

Lakeview Heights, West Kelowna: we love our neighbourhood. Sweeping views of vineyards, pear orchards, the lake, all within 3 km of home.

Osoyoos Home Hardwear: it was voted best business by the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce in 2014. Imagine a store packed with every cool knick-knack you could imagine. Everything for your dog, your kitchen, your garden. It is stacked floor-toceiling, and you have to look up to see everything. Whenever I am in Osoyoos I always stop in.

7 13

Wine Touring: within five mile of our house there are at least five wineries. We also love to take the car, head south to Okanagan Falls and beyond, and tour the wineries there. Desert Hills is one on my favourites. I shoot ‘Frame of the Week’ for the Wink-i-wear website, and I am always looking for new locations, so Stephen (Laura’s fiancé) and I often combine this with wine tasting. The locations look like they could be anywhere – France, Italy. The pictures get better the more wine we drink! Sometimes I have to pop south of the border to collect a delivery for the store so we tour the wineries on our way back. Noble Ridge Winery, Wild Goose Vineyards – which has some amazing white wines, there are some great smaller wineries with fantastic wines.

8

Edited by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie

Paynter’s Fruit Market: This is a great little market tucked away over on the West Side where you can get fruit and vegetables that still taste like fruit and vegetables! It took us a while to find it, but it’s all ‘farm to table’. The market opens the end of June for the season, and they have honey, eggs, cheese, everything.

Sopa Fine Arts: Sopa is a world class art gallery. It carries an unbelievable stable of artists. You visit an exhibition and you just can’t believe this is in Kelowna.

14

Dinner and Music: a cool thing is to go for dinner at a little restaurant and listen to some fantastic live music. Ricardo’s Mediterranean Kitchen in Lake Country, for example, with world class jazz singer Anna Jacyszyn entertaining you while you eat.

15

Okanagan People: since moving to Kelowna we have met so many wonderful, friendly people who live here. Lovely, lovely people. Stephen and I feel like the luckiest people in the world.
