Summer is the most beautiful time of the year and one of the many reasons we love the Okanagan so much. So we thought, why not fill our pages with some great tips and information to make this the best summer for you. You love to be on the water? Well, have a look at our boat reviews and check out the dealers we have introduced in this issue. Are you kind of adventurous? Not a problem, a short drive to Oyama and you can experience some serious zip-lining adventures. Looking for a culinary extravaganza? Sure, we found some great restaurants with amazing views for you! Your welcome!

But there is more, a lot more. Have you seen the iconic scooter on our cover? Yes, the Vespa. Well, it is finally available here in the Okanagan! We are also showing you the new line of Tommy Bahama summer wear, and best of all – we are raffling off some serious bling! A ladies’ Bulova watch! Aren’t we the best? INSIDE ICON A Sunny Okanagan Day ... ... blue sky, the warm sun. That is what we were expecting for our fashion photo shoot. We had picked the locations and everything was ready to go. Only ... the weather forecast was wrong. Twice ... and with a tight schedule there was no chance to re-schedule.

The solution? The Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna! The unique building with its atrium, soaring glass walls and wonderful woodwork was the perfect venue for our shoot! Thanks again for the prompt help! And a big thank you to all who were involved in this project!

What a great precursor to the boating season! Customers and enthusiasts alike gathered at Dockside Marine Center to enjoy some preseason fun. With a delightful menu provided by Details Catering, all those attending had the opportunity to taste a wide variety of delicious creations while sipping on their favourite cocktail or enjoying a beer.

Front and center were the boats! Dockside was showcasing some of the newest models for the season. Just out front was a decked out Sanger tournament boat with an awesome sound system and cool ambient lighting. Indoors the Harris pontoon boats were really demanding everyone’s attention, with so many amenities and comfortable loungers; we took the opportunity to relax with our drinks on the boat in the showroom.

WHAT`S YOUR BUSINESS WORTH? Thinking about Selling your Business?

There are a number of different methods used to establish the value of businesses in today’s marketplace dependant on the size, profitability and nature of the business being evaluated. Ultimately, the value of a business will be determined by what a buyer is willing to pay for it. However, placing a concrete value on the business will weed out unsuitable prospective buyers and specify what a buyer SHOULD pay for it.

EVERY business owner should know the market value of their business at all times. A Business Market Valuation shows what a business is worth and could in all probability, sell for at this moment. So, why is it important to know the market value of your business at all times?

• You may be considering selling in the next year, or two or three; • You may be selling right now but are unsure if your list price is correct; • You may be considering expansion in the next year; • You may be intending to develop a business plan in the next year; or • You just want to know the true value of your business.

A business valuation starts with examining the “provable” gross sales of a business, even before the cash flow is scrutinized. The “provable” sales refer to the owner’s ability to substantiate the actual revenue produced by the business for instance, with tax returns.

be used, however, all numbers shown on the P&L must be corroborated one way or another. Why would this step be so important? Well, it is usually safe to say that the recent past is the best indication of the immediate future meaning that your business appears lucrative and therefore more desirable to buyers.

What is Cash Flow?

Cash flow is your profit before taxes. In other words, it is what the owner is truly making from the business.

Cash Flow is determined by taking the Net Profit or Loss from the tax returns then “adding back” to the Net Profit or Loss any non-essential, non-business related or paper expenses such as amortization, depreciation and interest.

There are additional permissible “add backs,” including one-time or payroll expenses for an employee who is no longer with the business, just to use an example.

One of the most challenging aspects of trying to sell a business unassisted is being able to maintain one’s objectivity when it comes to determining the worth of our businesses.

Thoughts such as “it is what I need to retire on” or “it’s what I put into it” are not relevant factors for determining what a business is worth on the market at any given time. Most businesses are unrealistically overpriced the day they are listed because sellers invariably have emotional ties to the business.

Consequently, what a seller equates to its worth is not by any means the true value.

Here is what you DO NOT want to do...

Tell anyone that you are going to sell – confidentiality is of the utmost importance at this time; Change the business models or daily operations; and/or Take cash out of the business that will be reflected in subsequent financial statements.

Here is what you DO want to do...

Undertake a thorough review of the company books and corporate records ensuring that all are complete and up to date; Similarly, make sure that all tax returns and other government filings and licenses have been completed, filed and are current.

Arm yourself and be prepared to answer questions regarding the financial history of the business, including the good periods and the not so good.

It doesn’t make any difference what you imagine your business is worth, or how much you want for it, and neither does it make any difference what your accountant, banker, attorney, or best friend think. Only the marketplace will ultimately determine the true value of your business.

An Experience Like No Other Oyama Zipline

Extremely excited that our newest feature home from Jane Hoffman was in this incredible golf community we set out on a sunny Okanagan afternoon for the scenic drive to Gallagher’s Canyon. ABRAHAM LINCOLN - VAMPIRE HUNTER

by Seth Grahame-Smith No, this is clearly not just the Lincoln biography we’ve all been waiting for. But it is definitely a fun read. It all started in 2008 when the editor at a small Philadelphia publishing house, had the bright idea of combining classic works of literature with pop-culture tropes for fun and profit. The result was “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and the lucky freelancer who was asked to write it was Seth Grahame-Smith. The book sold more than a million copies and has been made into a feature film starring Natalie Portman.

Following its success Grahame-Smith now takes on Abraham Lincoln. The conceit is that he has come into possession of Lincoln’s secret diaries detailing his life as a stalker of...vampires. Yes, you read right. Vampires!

Lincoln learns at an early age that his family has been victim to the unacknowledged plagues of American vampires since before he was born, first killing off Lincoln’s grandfather and then later his mother. Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, young Abraham vows vengeance, provoking his bloody but curiously undocumented lifelong vendetta against vampires and their slave-owning allies. Wait, what? Yes Lincoln discovers a link between the South’s slave trade and the vampire menace, and we finally understand the true rationale behind the Civil War. What can we say, Grahame-Smith has not only reconstructed the true life story of 16th President of the Unit-

ed States of America, he has also revealed the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovered the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of the country.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a terrific twist on alternate history and an action-packed read. Definitely highly recommended to those who are fans of Lincoln, Civil War history, or vampires. And if you think it is just not for you, give it a go anyway. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Oh, right – Grahame-Smith is currently writing the feature film adaption for the book for producer Tim Burton.

Same for the winter: The Porsche Cayenne Diesel will be the perfect companion for you if you want to hit the slopes up at Silver Star Mountain or Apex., using its fancy Traction Management System controlling all four wheels. And did we mention the fuel economy?

Ah, Italy. “La Dolce Vita,” the sweet life. Italy has always been “in”. It is the birthplace of art, of architecture, the cradle of the Renaissance, music, education.

Italy is known for fantastic food, for great fashion and design. It’s a place where legends have been born. And one of them is ... the Vespa.

Developed on the base of the powerful GTS, the Vespa GTV’s styling pays homage to the distinctive vintage look of classic Vespas from the 50’s and 60’s, namely the headlamp which has been positioned on the front mudguard, as it was on the very first Vespa prototype.

A Vespa is the perfect blend of passion and practicality. For over 60 years, the “wasp” has been an international icon of Italian function and style.

It all started in 1945, when Piaggio, a large munitions and heavy manufacturing company needed a cheap means of transportation to sell to Italy’s post-war masses.

It had to be easy for anyone to operate without dirtying their clothes, and have a seat for a passenger. D’Ascanio came up with the idea of a vehicle mounted on a chassis with the gear change on the handlebars. To make tire changing easier he designed a supporting arm similar to an aircraft carriage. Finally, he designed a body where the riding position let you sit comfortably and would protect the driver so that he would not get dirty or dishevelled.

When the prototype was built, Enrico Piaggio exclaimed, “It looks like a wasp!”

And so the Vespa was born, and with more than 16 million units produced, it has become the most famous scooter in the world.

Unique, Small-Lot, and Terroir Driven A Charming Boutique Winery on the Naramata Bench

I

t seems the party never stops at Hillside Winery these days! Just recently winemaker Kathy Malone and her team brought home several medals from the All Canadian Wine Championships, and Chef Rob Cordonier was voted “Best Chef in the Okanagan!” The commitment to quality at the charming boutique winery has definitely paid off, and with their picturesque setting on the Naramata Bench halfway between Penticton and Naramata, your visit will be an experience you won’t forget.

History is still alive!

It all started in the early 1900s with the Riddle family who owned and operated an apricot orchard. Their property stretched about 100 yards north to what is now Riddle Road, and the original farmhouse stood on what is now the site of the tasting room. Make sure to have a good look at the cherry trees - they were on the Riddles’ front lawn and planted in 1926!

Designed by architect Robert MacKenzie back in 1997 (who later designed other wineries including Burrowing Owl, Red Rooster, Cedar Creek and Nk’mip), it took 2.5 years to build the current timber-frame winery building, which now dominates the view along Naramata Road with its 72 foot tower (which by the way acts as a ventilation shaft that helps to cool the winery cellar in the hot summer months.)

In 1979, the property was purchased by Czechoslovakian immigrants Bohumir and Vera Klokocka. When Vera saw the land she had a vision - the sloping land carpeted by orderly rows of grapes – grapes that she would turn into luscious wines, even though she had no experience at either growing grapes or fermenting them.

All of its 85,000 board feet of white pine originating from a single stand in northern Saskatchewan, the four dark Douglas fir beams that hold up the roof and upper patio of their Bistro are the only B.C. lumber in the winery and were logged off Vancouver Island in the late 1800s and previously supported the roof of the Acklands Hardware Warehouse on Granville Island in Vancouver for almost 90 years. In their lifetime these beams have survived at least three warehouse fires!

In 1984 she and Bohumir pulled out the apricot trees and planted 3.5 acres of vineyards.

Hillside’s gardens are also a distinctive feature of the winery. Boasting over a hundred plant species, groundskeeper Karin Parkin converted the old wild English garden and expansive lawns into the beautiful display gardens you see today. Her meticulous work ensures that visitors are greeted from spring through autumn with a grandiose showing of continuous blooms.

The last surviving apricot tree from the Riddles’ orchard remains on the bank just below the Kettle Valley Railway (on the northeast side of the building). The grapevines thrived in the gravelly soil and warm Okanagan sunshine and Vera’s dream took shape.

In 1989 Hillside, together with Lang Vineyards and Wild Goose, lobbied the Provincial Government to bring about the Farmgate Winery Policy that was instrumental in changing the B.C. Wine Industry. The new policy allowed small vineyards of five acres or less to not only produce wine but also to sell it directly from their premises.

As the original BC winery to produce Muscat Ottonel, a unique, aromatic white wine with a huge customer following, Hillside offer other varietals including Pinot Gris, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, and Mosaic (which is their trademark Bordeauxstyle blend.)

Cool temperature fermentations for the whites using state of the art steel fermentors produce intensely aromatic and flavourful wines, while more traditional techniques are applied to the reds, resulting in rich, classic style wines that have consistently won accolades from both consumers and wine judges alike.

he sun is beating down; a tropical mist is in the air, the sound of a waterfall rushing down a rock face sculpted by years of water flowing seamlessly into a mystical grotto, endless waterscapes abound…could there be a more inspiring and relaxing place?

It may sound as though we have flown thousands of miles away and landed in a hidden tropical paradise, untouched by humans, a place where your only neighbours are the wildlife that surrounds you and the foliage of the rain forest. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is we are in a residential area and we are surrounded by homes and roads.

But the feeling imparted by this Balinese oasis is a testament to what can be done with an empty piece of land, a vision, determination and nearly 30,000 man hours of labour.

An extremely challenging undertaking, this outdoor living space was designed to have almost seamless lake views from every vantage point, complete privacy, and ease of use. With authenticity at the heart of the project, all of the exotic woods, marble flooring, hand carved stone as well as hand crafted teak doors were imported directly from Bali, this was facilitated by Carol Dodge of Sun Country Furniture, who is an expert in the sourcing and importing of custom South East Asian goods.

It is almost impossible to accept that all of this is sitting atop a 20 foot tall bunker style garage, capable of storing a full bus RV. From simple water features and pools, to custom design and construction of complete outdoor living spaces, the team at Hampton, as this project showcases, is capable of creating whatever you can imagine and more. This Balinese playground oasis is truly spectacular.

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

This issue’s installment of “The Gentleman” is inspired by a recent dinner out to my favorite restaurant. I was blessed with the opportunity to witness two completely separate and very different approaches to going on a date with a girl. The juxtaposition between the two dates was truly beautiful. It was obvious that one guy had it figured out, and the other one might need a bit more time before trying to date a real woman. Let’s just say: he looked more into the server and his iphone than his gorgeous date.

It doesn’t take a dating expert to lay out some ground rules for going on a date...just maybe someone to point out the obvious. If this offends you, then you might be guy #2.

• Be on time! Keeping a girl waiting so you can make an entrance or because you’re so “busy” is not cool. Trust me, you aren’t that important...show up when you say you will.

• If you don’t have someone in your life on their death bed, put your phone away! Better yet, leave it in the car. If you pull out your phone to answer a text or take a call, you are showing that she is a bit less important than whomever is on your phone. She should slap you. Nothing is more important than her.

• She has already agreed to go out with you. You’re in!

Don’t spend the whole time trying to convince her how amazing, rich, strong, “connected,” or smart you are. I know you want her to know, I get it, but do it subtly and quietly.

• Here is the one thing you must take away from this: She wants you to be interested in her, ask her questions, and listen to her answers! Pay attention to her, and learn about her. That information, if you retain it, will serve you well in the future!

• Just so you know, she doesn’t want to hear about your exes. At all. The model you used to date doesn’t impress her.

• Compliments are a great idea! Just make sure they are not creepy ones about her body. You will want to focus your attention on her eyes. For those who missed that anatomy class in high school, the eyes are above the shoulders.

• Don’t be afraid to touch her. You know where this is going I’m sure. Subtle hand or arm touches are ideal during conversation, and the lower-back hand “guide” through a doorway is always a winner.

• I know you can keg stand with the best of them, but let’s maybe keep the drinking to a controlled level. Drink what you like, but save the shots for the second date!

• If there are choices to make with respect to venue, time, activity or anything else, be a man! If she wants you to decide, do it and be assertive. Being wishy washy is not attractive.

• It should go without saying, but don’t forget to open doors (car and entrances), push her chair in, deal with her jacket for her, and make sure she is comfortable.

• At the end of the night walk her to her car, or walk her to the door.. If you are parting ways and she has to drive, ask her to call you to let you know she got home safely. Trust me, do it.

• Unlike what the movie “Swingers” would have you believe, it is okay to show that you like a girl. You can drop the stand-offish and cool demeanor. She wants to know you are thinking about her when she’s not around, and if you want to call the next day....do it! Just don’t tell your buddies.

They say if you see a guy open a car door for a girl, either the car is new, or the girl is. Don’t be that guy! The beautiful thing is that everything above can work on the first date, but it can also work on the girl you have been with for 40 years. Chivalry and genuine interest are attractive, and it can only lead to great things either in life or later in the night!

An Okanagan Minute - Local News and Updates Kelowna General Hospital It’s time to celebrate: Both the Dr. Walter Anderson Building & the Centennial Building at Kelowna General Hospital are open.

Completed on time and under budget, the Centennial Building adds another 360,000 sq. ft. to the Kelowna General Hospital site allowing for the continued modernization of programs and services for the improvement of health care delivery in the Okanagan, offering more than double its current surgical capacity by 2025.

Linked to the Centennial building by a very cool enclosed pedestrian bridge, the Anderson building and is the home of the laboratory and clinical support departments for KGH. With the addition of these new facilities the health care system in the Okanagan has achieved some very significant milestones.

Rick Hansen Relay Day 253 - May 2nd, 2012 This year ICON had the great privilege of joining Dockside Marine to follow disabled sailor Hans Van Leening on Okanagan Lake for the 25th Anniversary Rick Hansen Relay. Having suffered a spinal injury which left him a quadriplegic, Hans became involved in the Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia when the former mayor of Vancouver, Sam Sullivan, invited him to the coast to try it out. Shortly afterwards, Sam Sullivan met with Hans and his wife Miriam to see if they could start the second chapter of the DSA in Kelowna and in May of 1993 it had become a reality.

Today the Disabled Sailing Association has four sail boats as well as instructors with a lot of experience offering lessons from the beginning of May into September out of the Kelowna Yacht Club.

Brewing Beer in Wine Country The Cannery Brewing Company, Penticton [A microbrewery is defined in Canada as one that produces less than 60,000 hectolitres of beer in a year] Microbreweries. I never thought much about them. Sure, I had heard about them, and I had seen bottles with very unique labels at the liquor store, but that was about it. And then I started to do some research in preparation for a meeting with the owners and the team at the Cannery Brewing Company in Penticton. Well, it seems I almost missed a trend. Or some might even say a boom, as craft breweries and microbreweries have been sprouting up lately like hops in the spring with double-digit sales growth in the last few years.

A full-blown craft beer boom, so to speak. Now I was curious.

Cannery Brewing was formed in 2000 in Penticton when Patt and Ron Dyck, who had been operating The Country Squire Restaurant in Naramata for twenty-three years, teamed up with Brew Master Terry Schoffer and together they embarked on a new and exciting journey. They brewed their first batch of beer on April Fool’s Day, 2001, which clearly shows that this is not just a regular business for them, it is about fun, enjoyment and passion. And these same elements are some of the key ingredients of their success.

“In the beginning, we brewed and sold beer in kegs for local restaurants, pubs and clubs,” Patt explains, “but then we started selling the 8.5 litre Party Pigs of beer and started our bottling in the one litre EZ cap grolsch bottles. Ron

delivered these all over the province himself in our cube van. We finally started bottling in 650ml amber bottles and then two years later, canning in 355ml cans.”

Fast forward almost a dozen years and a couple of expansions later, and today they brew more than 10 beers in multiple different packages, they offer tastings and tours and on December 21st 2011 they brewed their 1000th batch of beer.

“Craft beer has come a long way,” a very passionate Patt tells me while touring me through the brewery.

“There are more and more people looking for different styles of beer for different occasions. They’ll choose one style when watching a football game, another on a patio on a hot day, and another again to pair with a BBQ dinner. And they are always looking for flavour.”

Living in wine country, people know their grapes. And in the wine world where palates have evolved, much is the same with craft beer.

Beer drinkers think and talk about hops and beer styles the way that wine drinkers talk about grapes and wine varietals. And just look at the restaurants - It’s tough to find a restaurant worth eating at that doesn’t serve craft beer!

The number of craft breweries is growing, the number of beers they microbrew is increasing, and so is awareness. Patt explained, “We are seeing beer bars opening in the bigger cities, beer festivals, craft beer weeks, cask nights and specialty beer tappings. We are also seeing a real trend in beer and food pairings. Beer pairs so well with food and enhances the whole experience.”

Martin Lewis, Director of Food & Beverage for the Penticton Ramada Inn echoes this sentiment. “The craft brewing industry in

the West is changing faster this year than it has in the past 10 years. There have been craft breweries doing great things for a long time, but something has changed. Interestingly enough, beer is not just a man’s business, or drink, anymore. Patt explained, “There are more and more women who are drinking craft beer because of its great flavour. They take a great interest in the different beer styles as well as the food and beer pairings. There is also an ever increasing number of women working in the craft beer scene. We have seen a new trend with ‘women in beer’ events, dinners, Facebook groups and Twitter handles such as @PinkPints.”

The “shop local” trend and the awareness of natural ingredients in things we consume is impacting the beer business as well. Mass-produced beer is made with rice, corn, colouring, flavourings and enzymes. In a way, you can see it as the equivalent of white bread―bland and lacking in good nutrition. Conversely, finely crafted microbrewed beer is made with barley, wheat, hops and water. And like a good whole-grain bread, is better tasting and better for you. No nasty chemicals here.

Grilled Flank Steak with Herb & Butter Marinade Okanagan herbs are here! Think about gathering a bunch out of the garden, or at one of our local markets.

Combine several different kinds, chop finely & add to anything (generally, at the end of cooking or before serving) Serves 6

Brush one sheet of phyllo dough lightly, with butter and lay a second on top. Use a sharp knife to cut out 3” squares and ease these into each tart shell. Continue until all shells are lined.

2 lb. Flank Steak trimmed 1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar 1/3 cup Soya Sauce 1/3 cup Olive Oil 1 clove Garlic crushed Salt & Pepper 1 tblsp Butter 1/3 cup finely chopped herbs (we used Italian Parsley, Chives, Thyme and Summer Savory)

Preparation: Place steak in a large zip bag and add the vinegar, soya, oil and garlic. Marinate for 4-6 hrs.

Remove from bag to a baking sheet and pat dry. Season with salt and pepper and grill on medium – high heat until medium rare (4-6 minutes per side).

Remove to baking sheet, cover and rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, pour marinade into a small pot and bring to a boil for 3 minutes, then reduce heat and add butter and chopped herbs.

Slice very thinly at a 45 degree angle to the meats grain.

Pour the hot marinade over and enjoy!

• 2 cups Ricotta Cheese • 1/3 cup finely chopped herbs (we used Dill, Italian Parsley, Chives and Basil) • 1 clove garlic finely chopped • Zest of 1 lemon • Salt & Pepper

2 Combine and reserve in bowl.

250 gr. thinly sliced Smoked Salmon.

FRESH FINISH PHOTOGRAPHY The Art of Nick Schafer

At ICON we work with many local photographers and we are always amazed how different images can turn out. Take the same object, have 4 different photographers take a picture of it, and you will get four totally different images. It is not just pushing the button, real photography is a combination of science and art. As in most art forms you have to master the scientific part of the medium first, before you have the knowledge to really achieve the result you have envisioned.

And then again – if you don’t have a “vision” to start with, the result will often be a technically excellent photograph that lacks emotion and “seeing” qualities.

Nick Schafer is one of the true artists. Under his label “Fresh Finish Photography” Nick quickly gained popularity as THE club photographer in Kelowna. He loves to capture people when they are having fun, and the extremely colourful results generate huge traffic on the clubs’ website and social media outlets after the weekend. But there is more to Fresh Finish Photography, a lot more...

Since then we have worked with Nick several times. He was the photographer behind our cover shoot for the Spring 2012 issue, and he is also responsible for this issue’s cover and the Tommy Bahama fashion shoot.

We literally ran into Nick during one of our photo shoots with an exotic car. All of the sudden we were joined by “this guy” who showed up with a far better equipment than we use, asking if he can take some pictures.

“Of course,” we said, “just send us some pictures afterwards, maybe we can use them.” And we could and did. In fact they were so good, that we contacted Nick and asked for more samples of his photography.

Ok, let’s see if we can find out a little more about the man behind Fresh Finish Photography!

And so we learned about his raw talent, saw samples of his amazing landscape, automotive and portrait photography, we were absolutely fascinated with his very unique HDR (High Dynamic Range) photographic art.

ICON Okanagan: When did you first “discover” the camera? Or in other words...when and how did the fascination start?

Nick/ FFP: I would have to say I have always been interested in photography, but the first time I remember making a photo that caused me to think this is what I want to do was a simple shot taken with a Sony Cyber Shot. It was of a purple flower on the ground.

The camera had a function where you could spot colour the photo and I did, and for some reason after seeing that I just wanted to keep making photos.

The next year for my birthday my lovely girlfriend bought me my first DSLR kit and I haven’t stopped making photos since.

ICON Okanagan: Have you had any “formal” training?

Nick/ FFP: Nope. I get that question a lot, hahaha. I have never had any formal training and although I do believe school would be a valuable asset to a lot of things, I believe if you have a passion for it and an eye you can do it. Plus if you have any questions on anything just use this generation’s teacher...

YOUTUBE! ICON Okanagan: True, hahaha. Ok, the photographyinterested readers sure would like to know what equipment you use?

Nick/ FFP: HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography is the process of taking multiple exposures (usually 3-7) of the exact same scene then merging them all into one photo. This is done to properly expose everything from the darkest shadows to the brightest highlights. It can also be used to give an incredibly gritty or painted feeling to a photo. It basically makes the photo look hyper-real, giving even more dynamic range then your eye can sometimes see.

ICON Okanagan: Photography is not your main income at this point. Do you want to change that? And if so, would you specialize in something?

Nick/ FFP: I would love to make it a full time job and if the stars align and the cards all fall into place that may happen, but that’s the way I live my life, what happens, happens, what’s meant to be will be, and I will just see what the journey of life throws my way.

About specializing in just one style, I don’t know. I love everything to do

Nick/ FFP: Right now I use a Nikon D700 (waiting to upgrade to the D800, though).

In my bag I also have the 14-24mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2.8micro, 24-70mm f2.8 plus an SB700 and a few nicknacks and other stuff. For post processing I have 27” iMac, Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3 (two MUST HAVE programs I highly recommend any photographer to have in their arsenal.)

Oh, and for my HDR processing, I use Photomatix Pro.

Nick/ FFP: Haha, as with a lot of people my age, yes we have used film, but that’s when we were kids shooting with our parents cameras. Honestly I give the most respect I can to people that shoot with film, I could never do it, I love being able to check my shot as soon as I take it and delete what I don’t want. Could you imagine trying to shoot an event at the club with film haha, not to mention all the film you would need to carry with you if you were travelling.

with photography but if I was forced to be able to make a living by shooting only 1 style of photography it would have to be landscape. Being able to travel the world photographing beautiful locations would be a dream come true. High end real estate and large events(festivals/concerts) come in a very close 2nd though.

ICON Okanagan: Post-processing is huge these days. How important is it for you?

Nick/FFP: I find post processing to be incredibly important.

Yes I do try to get everything right in camera but I find I will always edit my photos, even if it’s just slightly editing the colours, contrast, sharpness, or other things. I also LOVE Photoshop and the things you can do with it, you can really impart any kind of feeling you want to a photo.

ICON Okanagan: So true! Nick, last question. People are always wondering about the colours in your club photography.

Extremely vibrant. Would you mind sharing the secret with us?

Nick/ FFP: Honestly, most of this is achieved right in camera.

I definitely do post process every club image with a few homemade presets I have mastered over the time I’ve been at the club, but mainly low ISO, wide aperture, and semi slow shutter with an off camera flash. My exact settings and post process techniques are being kept a secret, though. Sorry!

ICON Okanagan: Let’s compare the “good?” old days of photography with today...have you actually ever used film?

We were a little weary of the weather on this one, but luckily the beautiful Okanagan sunshine cooperated with us and everyone had an amazing time. With admission including locally inspired food fare, a huge range of entertainment, Nota Bene vino flowing bountifully, as well as shuttle pick up and drop off in Osoyoos, we definitely had a lovely afternoon in the heart of Black Hills scenic vineyard.

With multiple stations interspersed throughout the venue serving delectable culinary creations expertly paired with a number of Black Hills wines, social interaction was encouraged and abundant. Entertainment included live music, the art of JasonGOGO, a live auction, and fabulous gravity defying aerial acrobatics.

Front and center however was the delicious Nota Bene, a red we won’t soon forget!

The Wines of Summer ...

Now that summer has (finally) parked its sweaty self over the Okanagan Valley it is time to look into some lovely summer wines. And while we all enjoy a good red wine, the thought of drinking a glass of a heavy red right now feels just that- heavy. But don’t worry, there are many great wines out there that are perfect foils for the dog days of summer. And your favourite magazine was once again on a mission to find the ones that will delight your senses!

Sperling Vineyards 2010 Market White Ann Sperling brings 30 years of passionate winemaking experience home to the vineyard she grew up on, continuing a tradition begun by her great grandparents 150 years ago. She uses organic practices to craft elegant wines that showcase the mineral–rich benches and sundrenched vineyards of the east Kelowna property.

A blend of Pinot Blanc and delicately aromatic Baccus with a hint of Perle, this wine is the perfect addition to any summer day. Clos Du Soleil 2009 Signature Clos du Soleil is a small winery nestled on the upper bench of the Similkameen Valley. Using sustainable practices they produce delicious wine in the Bordeaux style, but with a distinctive New World edge. The name refers to the rocks, sun and soil from the mountain that forms a tall natural stone wall at the back of the vineyard trapping the sun’s warmth.

The use of all 5 red Bordeaux varietals (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec) and maturation for 18 months in French oak barriques before bottling without fining or filtering gives this wine great complexity. It greets the nose with vibrant strawberries and blackberry notes with hints of sandlewood and spice. As it opens dark cherries, plums and soft hints of caramel, espresso and chocolate come into play. On the palate the fresh fruit is echoed on a soft tannin base. After decanting, a balanced yet soft tannin structure frames the fruit and the aromas intensify.

A full bodied wine that is a perfect match for grilled and barbequed meats, and flavourful cheeses.

Rigamarole 2009 White “Why is it always such a RIGAMAROLE to simply find a great drinking WHITE?” If you haven’t heard the name of the winery you have surely seen their funny safari-themed labels.

Rigamarole Wines come from the Okanagan Artisan Wine Company, which is owned by Mission Hill Family Estate Winery who makes all their wines. There was almost no marketing for the brand, so it must be the eye-catching labels that made consumers give the wine a try, and maybe it is the fainting (but happy) goat on the label of the Rigamarole White that made it a very successful competitor in the “entry-level/ less than $20” field.

Ok, so we have a very nice label, and a very interesting price, but how is the wine? It is well made!

This blend of Ehrenfelser, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and other dry whites has strong aromas of spice and citrus, which gives it a crispness due to the acid balance from start to finish.

Our food editor recommends this dry, aromatic and engaging white with spicy Asian or Thai food.

And the OAWC says “save the mental energy for understanding the physiology of the “fainting” goat just what makes him fall over?

JOIE 2011 Rosé Joie Farm, owned and operated by Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn, is located on the Naramata Bench. Joie – which means “joy” in French – expresses the pleasure that food and wine have brought to their lives, they explain, and it is surely reflected in their eclectic and unique portfolio of wines.

Unique because they get their insipration from the grape varieties grown in the famous wine regions of Burgundy and Alsace, France, and unique because it is usually a small production of only 9,500 cases that sell out quickly - so make sure you get a case before it is gone!

We picked the 2011 Rose as we think it is the perfect wine for a nice Okanagan summer day (or night). Fill the glass and you will see a stunning pink colour, then swirl the glass and take a deep inhale. Welcome to a fruit basket filled with strawberries, caramel apples, raspberries and cherries, maybe a whiff of herbs. Wonderful. Now to the best part – the taste. Have a small sip and let it roll around your mouth. They added Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris to their blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, and the result is highly aromatic. It is off-dry on the palate, has a floral quality mixed with berries, and finishes with a firm citrus acidity. By the way: Drink it young!

Let’s just say this is the perfect “sipper” but if you want to pair it with some food we recommend creamy cheeses, summer salads, fish dishes or the sun dried tomato focaccia flat bread we had it with!
