publisher’s LETTER
welcome 2020!
just two weeks ago, the world was ringing in a new year and a new decade with fireworks, champagne and all-night parties. a lot has happened in the past 10 years and not all of it was and is as shiny as we may wish. we tend to just look at what is close to us instead of looking at a bigger picture. and we should. it is a way to appreciate and value what we have. let’s look forward to a new year—and a new decade—full of fresh opportunities, and making the most of them. in this edition, you will find a plethora of new and amazing products, from our big watch special to several travel stories. up and front is our recent trip to united arab emirates. it was a truly amazing time, learning about the history and culture while at the same time enjoying all it has to offer, from the most amazing architecture to luxury shopping, from fine dining to thrilling activities. we have devoted a whopping 15 pages to this special, the most ever for our travels, and it does not even come close to what we have experienced.
olaf robrecht publisher olaf@iconic-concierge.com
looking forward, there are many events in 2020 that we will be part of, and we already work full-speed on exciting stories and experiences. a thank you to all of you, our readers and clients, for your support and encouragements. we make this magazine not just for you but with you. cheers!
life is full of surprises... I remember it as if it was yesterday - yet, it is more than 20 years ago that I saw an array of rainbow-painted Mercedes S-sedans at a big car show in Germany. “They belong to a Sheikh from Abu Dhabi,” I was told, “he owns one of the biggest car collections in the entire world!” And now, just a few weeks ago, I was sitting next to him in his palace. Had lunch with His Highness and spent a good part of the day with him. I heard all about his love for cars and 4x4s, and he even gave me a private tour of his new Off-Road History Museum in Al Madam, Sharjah. What an amazing experience. And so I would like to express my sincere gratitude to His Highness, Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan. It was a day that I will never forget!

CELESTIA VANCOUVER’S NYE CELEBRATION H LOUNGE Photography by Josh Neufeld
It was quite the night! The champagne was flowing at CELESTIA, one of only five global New Year’s Eve parties presented by G.H. Mumm. The Champagne house had picked Vancouver along with Hong Kong, Melbourne, Berlin and Cape Town as a global frontrunner for their night of beauty and celebration. Hosted in the newly renovated H Lounge at the iconic waterfront Westin Bayshore Hotel, Mumm had partnered with Tyson Villeneuve as the local organizer, and it showed even in the smallest detail. Featuring a special performance set by DJ M1 from Paris alongside of Vancouver’s finest DJs and dancers, two dancefloors, lounges and a covered outdoor patio had been transformed into a magical setting to ring in the new decade in style!

THE 11-CAR GARAGE ON THE 57TH FLOOR We are pretty sure that the new owners of the two penthouses in the 60-story Porsche Design Tower in Miami love their cars. The massive four-level 16,915 sq. ft. penthouses feature full-length windows, 20-foot ceilings, and a private interior elevator. Its most spectacular feature, though, is the in-unit garage, which has enough room for 11 vehicles! An automated car elevator lift system transports your precious ride right through the lobby and all the way up to your in-unit garage. The residence’s outdoor space boasts two private pools—one on the rooftop and one on the terrace—as well as two balconies and two summer kitchens. In the building itself, residents can enjoy a movie theater and

game room, plus there’s a Car Concierge available who will tend to residents’ cars by providing regular maintenance, tire rotations, washing and other services. Should the $32.5 million penthouse be a bit too much, or if you don’t have enough cars, there are plenty of other options in the 196-meter high Porsche Design Tower: All condos (between 4,252 and 16,915 sq. ft.) have between two to four parking spaces, and 80 of them feature parking adjacent to the living space. A standard two-car garage takes up 525 square feet (48 square meters).

RYAN RODNEY REYNOLDS was born on October 23rd, 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia as the youngest of four brothers. He graduated from Kitsilano Secondary School in 1994 and attended Kwantlen Polytechnic University, but dropped out. Although there are no actors in his family - his father worked as a food wholesaler, his mother in a retail store - Reynolds harbored an affection for acting from an early age on. Reynolds’ acting career began in 1991, when he starred as Billy Simpson in the Canadian-produced teen soap opera Hillside (1991-1993), which was distributed in the US by Nickelodeon as Fifteen. He even relocated to Florida for filming, but returned to his hometown when the show got canceled in 1991. As Vancouver has a thriving TV and movie industry, Reynolds landed several jobs but got frustrated realizing that his career was not moving along as smoothly as he wished. He relocated to Los Angeles with a close friend of his, crashing in cheap hotels trying to find his first jobs. His determination paid off, landing him a supporting role in “Syzygy”, the thirteenth episode of the third season of the X-Files, and several other shows and TV movies. In 1997, Reynolds won the favor of the producers of Two Guys and a Girl (1998-2001) and was soon on his way to success in the States. Following with roles in the teen horror comedy Boltneck (1998) and later Dick (1999) and Finder’s Fee (2000), Ryan Reynolds soon saw his star rise, putting his name on the list of hot young actors of the early millennium.

a breathtaking speed climbing the ladder of success in Hollywood. Two comedies, 2005’s Waiting and Just Friends, led to the signing for the role of Wade Wilson / Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds officially had made the transition into Leading Man Actor, starring alongside Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy The Proposal and Adventureland. In 2011, he was ready to get back in the superhero game, playing the lead role in Warner Bros.’ film Green Lantern, making him one of the few actors to headline films based on both Marvel and DC characters. However, it would take another 5 years, in which he starred in several noteworthy movies such as 2012’s Safe House, alongside Denzel Washington, and a cameo appearances in two Seth MacFarlane films, Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West, before Reynolds would portray Wade Wilson again - this time as Deadpool. Reynolds had previously spoken of his interest and involvement in a possible film adaptation of Deadpool with screenwriter David S. Goyer as far back as 2005, and after X-Men Origins: Wolverine he became heavily involved in the development of a Deadpool film. Filmed in his hometown of Vancouver, famously closing the busy Georgia viaduct for two weeks to accommodate filming, Deadpool made several box-office records, including a worldwide opening of $264.9 million, the biggest of 2016. The financial and critical success led the studio to move forward with a sequel in 2017, and a third film is in development at Marvel Studios after the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney.
Prominent roles in more high-profile films followed, such as a lead in the National Lampoon movie Van Wilder in 2002, an appearance in The InLaws, with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks, and the Canadian production Foolproof in 2003.
His latest film, the fast-paced 6 Underground, directed by Michael Bay, was just released by Netflix in December 2019 and was filmed in LA, Budapest and Italy, as well as in Abu Dhabi. These locations stood in for Las Vegas, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and the fictional Turgistan.
2004’s Blade Trinity, which saw him undergo intense physical training and the lead role of George Lutz in the 2005 remake of the 1979 horror film The Amityville Horror became the next stepping stones on what was already
Observers will note that Ryan Reynolds’ character, code-named One, is a fan of Chopard. He can be seen wearing the elegant L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer from Chopard’s Haute Horlogerie collection, as well as the

Chopard’s the Garden of Kalahari necklace – the most precious ever made in the ateliers of the Maison, also made it into the movie. Aside from his career on the big screen, Reynolds is busy in several other endeavors, including Aviation American Gin, in which he acquired a stake and is actively overseeing the product’s creative direction, and an ownership stake in Mint Mobile. In January 2019, he was named the face of Armani Code leading with a campaign for their Absolu scent. After his first marriage with actress Scarlett Johansson, which ended in divorce in 2010, Ryan Reynolds is now married to Blake Lively, whom he first met while filming Green Lantern. The couple married on September 9, 2012, and have three daughters together. Reynolds became an American citizen in 2018 and lives with his family in Pound Ridge, New York. Cars & Motorcycles Reynolds, who appeared on BBC’s Top Gear as the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car in 2012, has a pretty nice collection of cars and fast bikes, including several Ducatis and Triumphs, and a Lamborghini Aventador and Dodge Challenger. CORUM
HISTORY IN THE MAKING SINCE 1955
FOUNDED IN 1955, Corum represents creative and daring watchmaking. The adventure began with René Bannwart. With his strong entrepreneurial spirit and watchmaking experience acquired from the most prestigious watch manufacturers, he founded his own brand and created CORUM with his uncle Gaston Ries in La Chauxde-Fonds. Particularly fascinated by the word “quorum” which means the minimum number of persons present and necessary to hold discussions and make valid decisions, Bannwart nonetheless simplified the spelling to CORUM.
Since the time of its creation in 1955, CORUM displayed a determination to position itself at the forefront of the Swiss watch industry. The emblem, a key pointing skywards, is a symbol of the mystery to be fathomed, the enigma to be resolved, of new territories to be explored, and of innovation. It also alludes to the inventiveness, tenacity and bold spirit required to attain the total mastery of time. In 1956 the first CORUM watches appeared on the market, and the brand launched a veritable cascade of new ideas with great success. It was even recognized by its peers as one of the most creative in the industry. In 1966 Jean-René Bannwart, the son of the founding father, joined the watchmaking company. Together, father, and son created Corum Rolls-Royce (1976) the models that became Corum’s trademark, in particular the Admiral’s Cup model. Other noteworthy models were the Rolls-Royce
watch (1976), which once again underscored the avant-garde nature of the brand, since it represented the first ever partnership of this kind with a prestigious automobile manufacturer; the Golden Bridge (1980) with its delicately handengraved baguette movement revealed behind a perfectly transparent sapphire crystal case; and the 1986 Meteorite model, which featured a dial cut from an authentic meteorite discovered in Greenland by famous explorer Robert E. Peary. In 2000, the Bubble watch was introduced. Fitted with an 11mm thick sapphire crystal, it created a magnifying glass effect which became the model’s signature feature. Several exceptional models and movements were introduced over the last 15 years, writing watchmaking history.
Corum Meteorite Peary (1986)
Corum is currently based on four collections that embody its vision of 21st-century watchmaking: Admiral, Golden Bridge, Heritage and Bubble.

THE ADMIRAL COLLECTION
THE HERITAGE COLLECTION
Created in 1960, the Admiral collection draws its original inspiration from nautical sports, and its timepieces are now considered iconic sporty chic watches. Influenced by teak wood and jet set evenings, the Admiral goes from the deck to dinner without compromising its contemporary elegance. Over 60 years, the piece has established itself as a creation for aesthetes seeking tasteful casualness, in between work and leisure, city and nature. Independent, creative, audacious, it is undeniably a Corum creation.
The Heritage Collection pays tribute to traditional watchmaking reinterpreted by Corum. For more than half a century, Corum has greatly enriched the technical and aesthetic language of the rather conservative realm of watchmaking. The “ Heritage ” title of this collection is a way for Corum to demonstrate the importance of its roots but at the same time going beyond its history and renewing it.
The collection combines the aspirations of the modern gentleman with the early Legend line featuring a classic sport design, and the robust and sophisticated AC-One line which was designed for extreme sports enthusiasts. THE GOLDEN BRIDGE COLLECTION Launched by Corum in 1980, the Golden Bridge model remains a unique construction in watchmaking, an original creation where the linear movement forms both the calibre and most of the piece’s dial. Sculptural, technical and of rare aesthetic audacity, the baguette movement of the Golden Bridge is unrivalled in the world of Fine Watchmaking. More than 30 years after it was first created, the Golden Bridge Collection has now been enhanced with a round case. This delicate calibre is a physical expression of the technical feat of combining its vertical movement with a round shape. Rectangular and circular, and micro and macro come together in this model, designed to be a bridge between two fields of excellence – watchmaking and architecture.
The Coin Watch, the dial and movement of which are encased within a coin, is itself the most timeless illustration of the boldness it has held within for almost forty years. The Tourbillon and the Minute Repeater are also classic timepieces that Corum is revisiting in depth. First created in late 2018, two of the 2020 Corum Lab 01 models have distinctive barrel-shaped cases in Damascus steel - a first for the brand. Instantly recognizable by its wavy pattern, Damascus steel is a type of alloy well-known to knife and sword makers for its exceptional hardness and resistance to shatter. Two other models are offered in titanium. Driven by the caliber CO 410, the signature Corum micro-rotor is visible beneath the sapphire crystal and has been finished with a contemporary spiral effect. The Lab 01 offers a 50-hour power reserve and is limited to 99 pieces per colour. THE BUBBLE COLLECTION In 2000, the emblematic Bubble watch was introduced. Twenty years after the dazzling success, Corum continues to celebrate this icon with several limited editions that are independent, impertinent and irreverent. From the threehand or no-hand Bubble watch to the Bubble Tourbillon or unique pieces, Corum explores a boundless creative universe for enthusiasts of uninhibited and avant-garde watchmaking. www.corum-watches.com

MB&F
LM THUNDERDOME The Legacy Machine Thunderdome is a collaboration between MB&F and two legendary watchmakers: Eric Coudray – a legendary innovator from the Vallée de Joux known for his unorthodox, jaw-dropping complications – and Kari Voutilainen, a famed perfectionist and acclaimed pillar of traditional craft based in Môtiers. Together they created the world’s fastest triple-axis regulating mechanism with 3 axes revolving in record-breaking 8 seconds, 12 seconds and 20 seconds. It also features a unique combination of Potter escapement, hemispherical balance and helical hairspring. Rising above a sea of blue guillochage is a rotating spherical mass of gears, pinions and cages. Somehow, from this chaos of motion, order is extracted. Time is indicated on an inclined dial of stretched lacquer, proving that even the wildest horological whirlwinds can be tamed into the logic of hours and minutes. Launched in two limited editions: 33 pieces in platinum 950, with a light-blue guilloché dial plate; 10 pieces ‘The Hour Glass’ in tantalum (5 with dark-blue guilloché dial and 5 with an inlaid aventurine dial). US$ 280,000 (Thunderdome Platinum).

IWC
80 YEARS FLIGHT TO NEW YORK This special edition of IWC’s Timezoner Chronograph honours Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s transatlantic journey 80 years ago. It features design nods to this exciting era and the adventure of flight. Fittingly, this model is likewise limited to 80 watches. On July 14th, 1939, the Latécoère 521 took to the skies for the first non-stop crossing of the North Atlantic by seaplane or “flying boat”: 31.62 meters long, 9.01 meters high and a wingspan of 49.31 meters, the Latécoère 521 was an aviation engineering marvel, something that Antoine Saint Exupéry was well aware of. The author and pilot was a passenger on Latécoère 521’s maiden voyage. The IWC Timezoner The Timezoner uses the 89360 calibre, introduced in 2007, the first manufacture chronograph movement to be completely developed in Schaffhausen. In this movement, the hours and minutes are combined in a totalizer at 12 o’clock. This makes it just as easy to read a stop time of 8 hours and 54 minutes as it is to check the current time. The 89365 version features the stop minutes and seconds function as well as a flyback function. The self-winding movement has a 68-hour power reserve. The names of 24 cities are displayed on the bezel; each one represents one of the international time zones. The bezel is pushed down on opposing sides with the thumb and forefinger. The desired time zone (or, during the daylight saving time, the small “S” just before the city name) is then turned to the “12 o’clock” position. The movement of the bezel is transferred to the hour wheel, 24-hour display and date advance wheel, ensuring that all three displays can be adjusted forwards or backwards in one-hour steps. Drive for the normal movement of the hour hand and its “jump” when the time zone is changed is provided via a differential gear.
She can be yours
On the 80 YEARS FLIGHT TO NEW YORK, Paris and New York – the time zones marking the start and finish of Saint-Exupéry’s journey – are depicted in red on the city ring. The dial and city ring in the Timezoner’s mechanism are tobacco brown, harking back to the colour of flying suits in Saint-Exupéry’s time. C$17,300. In addition, IWC and the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation have published a new coffee table book commemorating the trip and Saint Exupéry’s time in New York City where he wrote his famous work “The Little Prince”. URWERK UR-100
The UR-100 takes us on a journey through both time and space, two concepts at the very core of URWERK. Using its orbiting satellite hours and minute hands, the UR-100 displays both time (hours and minutes) and space (distance travelled), merging these two concepts in the creation of the all-new UR-100 SpaceTime. The UR-100 SpaceTime features URWERK’s iconic orbital hour satellites, differing however in one significant way. Rather than the red-arrowtipped minute pointers on the hour satellites disappearing after 60 minutes when replaced by the next, the UR-100 minute arrow passes beneath and between subsidiary dials, reappearing to display intriguing new astronomical indications: distance travelled on Earth and distance travelled by Earth. Powered by the automatic Caliber 12.01. Power reserve 48 hours. Available in Black and Silver, each limited to 25 pieces. US$49,000.

HUBLOT
BIG BANG MP-11 SAXEM Having made a huge investment in the industrialisation of sapphire—the most difficult material to produce—in several colours (transparent, black, yellow, blue and red), to have the quantity necessary to create its models, and given the impossibility of offering an emerald green in this material, Hublot has now explored new avenues. The MP-11 SAXEM (as in Sapphire Aluminium oXide and rare Earth Mineral) takes a new approach to the ultra-technical and contemporary design of the MP-11 model by shaping its case in an innovative material never before used in watchmaking. Its green colour comes from mixing aluminum oxide (the base component of sapphire) with elements like thulium, holmium, and chromium. The result is both aesthetically and technically stunning, being harder than emerald and with a brilliance that comes close to that of a diamond. Within this fully transparent case beats a manualwinding manufacture calibre with an exceptional 14-day power reserve ensured by seven barrels that can be seen from the dial side. The Vancouver Club was turned into the Salon De Rêves, the “Dream Room”, taking inspiration from the famous Paris Salons of the 1750s to 1890s, arguably the greatest annual art events in the Western world and culminated with the debut of Impressionism as well as Art Nouveau. For his FortyFor40 event, Tyson Villeneuve welcomed some of the finest local artists, performers, dancers, designers, chefs, mixologists and musicians, taking over several rooms at the Club. sharjah Sharjah is the third largest and third most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, forming part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. A short 30-minute drive from Dubai with its flashy tall buildings and shopping malls, Sharjah will welcome you with a more subtle approach, concentrating on the culture and its rich history. And if you can handle a day or two without your glass of wine (Sharjah is 100% alcohol-free) you will find some of the best museums and art galleries in the country. This emirate, declared the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998 and Capital of Islamic Culture in 2014, is doing more than anywhere else in the UAE to preserve its heritage. We stayed at the luxurious Al Bait Sharjah resort in the restored Sharjah Heritage Area, called the Heart of Sharjah, where we had the honour to meet with His Excellency (HE) Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal. As Executive Chairman of Sharjah Investment & Development Authority (Shurooq), Al Sarkal has been named one of the 100 Most Powerful Arabs and is considered one of the key leaders in the transformation of Sharjah as a key investment, tourism and business destination. Under his vision and leadership, cultural tourism in Sharjah sees continuing growth with attractions like Al Qasba, Al Majaz Waterfront, Flag Island and Al Maraya Art Centre.
With His Excellency, Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal
The Heart of Sharjah project, a 15-year historical restoration project of the heritage areas of Sharjah, is Al Sarkal’s true legacy project.
“Sharjah is renowned for its commitment to art and culture,” he explains, “and has always been heritage driven. As the gateway to Arabic heritage, it dates back 5,000 years when it was one of the wealthiest towns in the Gulf region, leading in trade, pearl farming and fishing.” Today, several initiatives are building this emirate into a top regional destination which is aiming to attract up to 10 million visitors by 2021. But there is more to Sharjah than just heritage and culture. It also embodies the spirit of free enterprise with tax-free zones featuring modern infrastructure and services, home to around 13,500 companies from 157 countries. “The world has always been attracted to the Arabic culture,” says Al Sarkal. “With cheaper air travel there has been keen interest among travellers to visit Sharjah and experience authentic Arab hospitality, and with a $408m expansion to Sharjah Int. Airport we expect to welcome up to 20 million passengers annually.” It was also his vision to create Al Bait Sharjah, the newest and most luxurious boutique hotel in the Emirates, and we can only encourage our readers to stay at this unique 5-star property. “Al Bait, which means ‘Home’ in Arabic, is part of our conservation project ‘Heart of Sharjah’. It features a collection of four heritage houses once owned by Emirati families closely interwoven with Sharjah’s history,” Al Sarkal explains. “It is now home to 53 luxury rooms and suites, a library and a museum.” Even if you don’t plan to stay overnight in Sharjah you should definitely plan a visit to this emirate and city. There is more than luxury shopping in the UAE and Sharjah is the perfect place to learn about the culture and history.

“Welcome Home!” - Al Bait Sharjah “Welcome Home!” That’s how the concierge greeted us when we checked in at the “United Arab Emirates’ Most Luxurious New Hotel“, Al Bait in Sharjah. We later found out that ‘The Home’ is actually the literal translation of ‘Al Bait.’ The resort is located in the historic inner-city along a waterfront canal and is part of the Emirate’s largest and most ambitious historical preservation and restoration project known as Heart of Sharjah, a mere 25km from Dubai. The 53-room Emirati luxury hotel, a Leading Hotels of the World property, looks and feels like its own walled village. Five heritage houses once owned by local families who made an impact culturally, intellectually and politically on Sharjah’s history, along with newer buildings, have been transformed into a luxurious retreat. Narrow alleyways, offering a cool breeze in the hot summers, are lanternlit at night, giving it a very romantic touch.
DINING AND MORE The property features an array of amenities, including two restaurants inspired by Middle Eastern and Far Eastern cuisines, an ice cream shop, and a cafe. The resort also houses a gym, cigar lounge, museum, and library, as well as a luxury spa with hammam that offers traidtional Middle Eastern beauty and wellness services. For those who like to travel in style and require a chauffeur service, the Al Bait Sharjah resort offers a fleet of 2019 Mercedes-Benz sedans and an iconic 1967 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman limousine. ROOMS AND SUITES The spacious rooms and suites feel very cosy and incorporate the traditional design, with Arabic-style floor sofas, woven palm-frond ceilings, hand-carved wood furniture and decorative brass flourishes.
CONCIERGE SERVICES If there is anything that you need or would like to do, the Concierge team at Al Bait Sharjah is there to help. From assisting with arrival transfers to organising private art tours and cooking lessons, Al Bait Sharjah will open the most exclusive doors to this enigmatic Emirate. EXPLORE! A DEVEL WITHIN Made in Dubai - the 5000HP Devel Sixteen “Actually, it is a bit more. Like 5007 horsepower,” Majid Al Attar says with a smile when we visit him in his showroom in Dubai. “We are currently doing a lot of testing and we are very happy with the results.” He is also quick to point out that a fellow Canadian, Drake, loves the hypercar and has given it an appearance in his 2018 “I’m Upset” music video. The Devel Sixteen garnered internet fame a few years ago, claiming this insane and jaw-dropping number, and people were quick to doubt the specs and even the existence of a real car. Well, here we are in Dubai, with the prototype and we were also introduced to two more cars that have updated bodies, interiors and engines. It all started in 2006 with a concept, before in 2013 the first prototype was unveiled at the Dubai International Motor Show. Devel plans to make three different versions - a ‘base’ model with a V8 making 2,000hp; a mid-range street-legal version with 3,000hp and finally, the 5,000hp which won’t be street-legal. It seems that after thirteen years, the company is getting closer to a final delivery date. We can’t wait! While in the glamorous showroom (although Devel will soon move into a new and bigger facility), Majid Al Attar also showed us an equally insane beast, the Devel Sixty. This very real tank-like truck with six wheels has a 6.75-liter V8 turbodiesel with 720 horsepower and 1,000 Newton-meters (738 pound-feet) of torque. A range-topping version with up to 1,500 hp is also in the make. By the way - google it: There is a video that shows this beast on a drag strip against a Mercedes AMG GT S. The Devel wins. Production for the Sixty will be in Dubai. Starting price for a military armored version is $250,000, while the top of the line luxury version will set you back $450,000. Delivery on the first edition is expected to be later in 2020.

A Pot of Gold EXPLORING QUEBEC IN AUTUMN
Québec was definitely not on the list of my ‘must-go places’ but when we got an invitation from the Lincoln Motor Company to experience their all-new Aviator SUV I was interested. In the car. Quite frankly, other than on our Coast2Coast Challenge I have never been to Québec but this 4-day trip in the beginning of October made me become a fan of our mostly French-speaking province. Let me tell you why ...
The hotel of choice was the majestic Fairmont Château Frontenac Hotel, located inside the walls of Old Québec and towering the city with breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and the architecture of the Old fortified City. Not only does it sit in the heart of Old Québec - it is the heart of it. All of the wonderful sites and experiences that the Old City has to offer are in easy walking distance, and the hotel itself will offer you all the luxury and amenities you expect, especially after its multimillion dollar renovation. Early October offers lots of sunshine hours and temperatures that are ideal for some exploring. Quebecers like to say their capital city resembles a visit to France – without the jet lag – and I couldn’t agree more. The old quarter is filled

with ancient churches, townsquares, cobbled lanes, buzzing bistros and outdoor cafes. This time of the year, you can still sit outside and sip a coffee or eat lunch or some delicious pastries. And the food, as they say, is to die for! Although Montreal might have more of a reputation as Quebec’s culinary hub, the province’s capital is not to be overlooked. There is a vibrant dining scene that has roots in traditionally Québécois dishes and produce, but is now showcasing Quebec’s terroir in creative new ways. Raphaël Vézina, head-chef and co-owner of Laurie Raphaël, is one of the creative culinary minds behind this new gastronomic era, setting new standards with his amazing restaurant. Here, the Chef Raphaël Vézina
customer is at the center of the experience, and the food a hymn to the beauty of the products. Highly recommended! After exploring Old Québec, I took the Aviator on a little one hour and thirty minute road-trip along the St. Lawrence River to the picturesque region of Charlevoix. Here, in La Malbaie, the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu would be the hotel for the night. And another culinary experience was about to begin. Éric Bertrand and his wife Danielle Guay welcomed us to their restaurant Vices Versa. Cooking together, the result is a menu divided in two sections: his dishes are listed under “Vices,” hers are “Versa.” Believe me ... both are winners! Especially when paired with some of their beautiful wines. Staying in La Malbaie, you should definitely plan for a drive
to Baie-SainteCatherine and book a luxury VIP Whale watching experience in the St. Laurent Lounge and on the private footbridge and terrace of the AML Grand Fleuve. Watching the giants of the sea sipping a good glass of wine is a whole new experience! Overall, I would recommend to make this a 4-night stay, unless you want to spend another day or two in Montreal. And although I have no doubt that this province is beautiful year-round, fall definitely kicks it up a notch when Mother Nature paints the landscape in the most vivid colours. www.quebecoriginal.com
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator
“Performance comes in lots of flavors.” Exploring the Matthew McConaughey in us, we opted for the the brand-new three-row Lincoln Aviator for our Quebec trip. As the name suggests, it draws inspiration from mid-century aircraft styling. The instruments have a Bell and Ross look to them, and instead of wood we see polished, engine-turned aluminum accents. Check-out the rims - yes, we see engine turbines and if you look at the profile of the car you will notice the resemblance to the shape of a wing. There are lots of cool gimicks, such as the electrically operated door handles, the self-lowering when approaching the car, or the illuminated “door mat.” What we loved the most, however, where the super-comfortable heated and ventilated seats, adjustable in a whopping 30 directions. They even offer a range of massage options. Our $85,000 Burgundy Velvet “Reserve AWD” came fully loaded, including $16,000 of optional equipment (such as the 22” Mach Alloy Wheels, the Equipment Group Package, Dynamic Handling Package and the Conveniance pack).

In early October we invited a few business owners and entrepreneurs on a special trip to the South Okanagan. From racing to fine dining, it was a road trip that summed up in just 2 days what the South Okanagan has to offer. We left Vancouver in the early morning and arrived for a breakfast and a gasstop in Hope around 9.30am. Leaving at 10am, we took Highway 3 and arrived at the Area27 Motorsports Park south of Oliver after another quick stop in Princeton at 1pm. Area27, the 4.83km long private motorsport club, is also home to the Camaro Driving Academy and Kartplex, a brand-new state-of-the-art kart racing centre that is open to the public.

After lunch and a tour of the new Area27 clubhouse, our guests had the chance to experience Canada’s most exclusive circuit while riding copilot with Canada’s top racing professionals. Not only was it a lot of fun, but we can see some of us going back and taking a course at the academy. We checked in at the beautiful Spirit Ridge Lake Resort at 4pm. Dinner was served at Spirit Ridge’s The
Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry restaurant, where Executive Chef Murray McDonald surprised us with a delicious 4-course menu, paired with South Okanagan wines. Chef McDonald joined us several times throughout this fine dining experience, making it a very memorable evening. We ended the evening with a fantastic Martell Cognac tasting, hosted by our very own Keith Trusler. The next morning and after a healthy breakfast we went back to Area27 Motorsports Park, where Craig Finer welcomed us to his new 1.21km long Jacques Villeneuve-designed track.

WHERE: Flying with Turkish Airlines in business class to Istanbul, Turkey where cultural connections to Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires meet. WHAT: Nişantaşı (pronounced ni-shan-ta-shi) is Istanbul’s most fashionable and upscale neighborhood. This is where Istanbul’s high society comes to shop, dine and people watch. For your 3-day visit, we recommend staying in this particular neighborhood since it just feels worldly, vibrant - not chaotic. Nişantaşı showcases a modern engaged face of Istanbul; one that is fashionable, stylish and energetic.
Istanbul
WHY: Here, you will see successful residents of Istanbul chatting away in cafés, shopping in boutiques and entertaining international business clients. As you wander through the posh streets of Nişantaşı, you’ll be impressed by the sheer number of independent cafés, fashion boutiques, upscale restaurants, casual lokantas (cafeteria-style restaurants), hipster and laptop-friendly coffee shops and burger joints. HOW: We spent three days eating, shopping and touring our way around this lovely neighborhood and compiled a list of our favourites.

Taksim is a very busy nightlife, shopping, and dining area. Vintage trams shuttle along Istiklal Caddesi, the city’s main pedestrian boulevard, which is lined with 19th-century buildings housing international shopping chains, movie theaters and cafes. The dense network of side streets is filled with bars, antiques shops, and rooftop eateries with Bosphorus views. Bosphorus is a natural strait and very strategic waterway connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. As a major shipping and trade lane, the Bosphorus Strait has attracted empires for centuries, and their remains are visible along the coastline. There are plenty of local ferries along the strait to you get on and off and see all the valuable sights. For some great imbibing, head to Glens - a rooftop terrace with a Bosphorus view. The Most Secret Bars In The World IT’S A HOT TREND - SPEAKEASY BARS. But what are they? Yes, you can say they are hidden bars but there is some interesting history to them. A Speakeasy bar was the term for an illicit drinking house during the Prohibition era in the United States. At the time, it was illegal to consume and sell alcohol, so people were serving it behind closed doors in discreet locations - the speakeasy bars. To get in, you first needed to know where they were, which is more complicated than it sounds. Speakeasy bars didn’t have signs. And even if you found one, you would usually need a password to get in and enjoy some homemade (and of questionable quality) alcohol. The Prohibition era is long gone but the speakeasy bars are back, but with a modern twist. Almost every big city has their own secret bar(s) where people can go and have a great time while enjoying some delicious drinks. So the next time you travel, why not find those secret spots? And as you may only have limited time, we took the liberty to do some research for you. Here is our short list of some of the most unique and interesting secret bars in the world. And let’s start with some unique places in Vancouver! CANADA The Narrow Lounge, Vancouver Look for the red light! CREATING IMPACT Candid Conversations with Leaders in Life, Business and Philanthropy
you’ve invested in to a foundation? While we all choose to define philanthropy in a manner personal to us, the word itself originates from the Latin meaning, “love to mankind”. In this new editorial, we will share intimate conversations with dynamic, successful and accomplished people, who also have big hearts and a common passion to leave the world a better place for future generations.

WELCOME BACK to this next edition of “Creating Impact, Candid Conversations with Leaders in Life, Business and Philanthropy”. For those of you reading this new editorial for the first time, I will “reset” the context for you with the opening words from our first edition in the Fall 2019 issue. When you hear the word philanthropy, what comes to mind? Writing a large cheque to a charity? Donating a piece of art for a fundraiser? Gifting appreciated shares of a company

Late in 2019, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Lotte Davis, CEO & Co-Founder, AG Hair and CEO & Founder, One Girl Can. Lotte co-founded AG with her husband, John Davis, more than 30 years ago in Vancouver and over the past three decades, they have grown AG to become one of the most well-recognized hair product brands and the largest independent manufacturer of hair-care products in Canada. In 2008, Lotte combined her entrepreneurial spirit with her desire to create meaningful change in the world and founded One Girl Can, a charitable organization that exists to give girls in Africa the opportunity to achieve their potential and become the next generation of leaders in Kenya and Uganda. This candid conversation with Lotte clearly illustrates how aligning and integrating our businesses with the change we wish to see in the world, creates the ultimate win-win for all stakeholders involved. Our journey with Lotte begins in South Africa in 1951 where she was born to Dutch parents who had immigrated from Holland right after World War II. This was right in the middle of the Apartheid era and Lotte shared that “from the age of four or five, I realized just how much people of colour were being discriminated against and marginalized”. She spent the first nine years of her life in the middle of
this humanitarian atrocity and in 1960, her parents finally decided to move the family to Canada to start a new life and settled in Toronto. Lotte’s entrepreneurial spirit and strong desire to be independent were sparked as early as age 11, where she got her first job delivering papers for The Globe and Mail in Toronto. Soon thereafter, she started to discover the social norms concerning females, how they were not treated equally in society and were often belittled by men and seen as subordinate. Lotte shared that at age 13, “I read Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminist Mystique and from then on, I knew I was a feminist.” At age 15, a disruptive family life forced Lotte to leave home. She decided to move to Holland where she still had some relatives and entered the workforce full time. This is where she began to experience discrimination against women and sexual harassment in the workplace firsthand. Lotte shared that “It felt like a constant competition amongst women…like if you weren’t being objectified, then you didn’t belong”. In spite of the social norms she’d been exposed to, at the age of 17, Lotte decided she was going to be successful. She wanted to prove that women were just as capable and intelligent as men, and moved back to Toronto from Europe to complete her high school education and being the next phase in her life journey. Lotte started out her official career working in merchandising, design and window display, taking her from Toronto to Arizona to Los Angeles and finally, to Vancouver. She shared, “My initial negative experience working for others inspired me to become an entrepreneur and create my own business model”. In 1981 in Vancouver, she met her husband John and together they started brainstorming new business ventures. One of the first involved beating pinewood with bike chains (to give it a worn look) and then crafting the boards into country furniture. After much trial and error, Lotte and John ultimately decided to go into the professional hair care business. “We
Jason Boudreau with Lotte Davis
took out a $5,000 third mortgage on our home”, says Lotte, “bought 1,000 white, stock bottles, a used and broken peanut butter filling machine, and small mixing tank. I designed the labels which we hand-applied to the bottles to save money. We started with two products, a shampoo and conditioner, and John formulated them both.” To thicken the shampoo, John used a unique plant-based cellulose, that infused moisture into the hair and produced a discernably better, quality product. Their competitors routinely used sodium chloride (table salt) to thicken shampoos, a cheap alternative that understandably dried out the hair and left it feeling less manageable. Their “No Salt” shampoos gave them the competitive advantage they needed to starting building their new business. “In the evenings, we hand-pasted the labels to the bottles and filled them by hand”, Lotte explains. “During the day John, with his natural sales ability, would sell our hair care line, consisting of only two products, door-to-door to salons in Vancouver”. To manage cash flow, John would use the family car to deliver the products and offer a 10% discount for COD. Lotte and John also had two young girls, Courtney and Mackenzie, both of whom were under three years old. Without funds for daycare, Lotte would bring the girls to their 1000 sq. ft facility in Burnaby that they had
moved the business to and set up a play centre for them while she filled bottles from the used peanut butter filling machine John had refurbished. At night, she would work on her graphic design business that helped bridge the gap in finances. “We should never have succeeded”, she says to me. “We had no money and no experience in the professional hair care industry.” They realized they only had one chance to make a good impression, and to make sure the products John was formulating made a discernable difference in the hair, they bought every competitive hair product in the market and did half-head tests on their own hair every day. Based on their own critical feedback, John would go back to the lab at night and fine-tune each new product, until one by one, they eliminated each of their competitor’s product from testing. Lotte and John were all-in and managed every aspect of the business. John’s skills were in sales, formulating, and manufacturing efficiencies, where Lotte excelled at marketing, design, and strategy. They quickly discovered that they had a particular talent together for promotional marketing and merchandising when they decided to sew 700 drawstring bags for their first Christmas holiday promotion and sold out almost immediately. The AG brand was becoming more and more well-known in a short period of time, and in 1994, they received the Canadian Award for Business

Excellence in Entrepreneurship. From 1995 to 1996, they went from the 16th fastest growing company in Canada to 5th and at that point, took on a big expansion to accelerate AG’s growth and evolution into the company it is today. At this point in our conversation, the focus shifted from business to the spark that ignited Lotte’s deep passion for empowering women. About 15 years into AG’s life, she had a sudden realization that “the business was stable and profitable”, and that the time had come to finally fulfill her lifelong dream to go back to Africa, and to impact gender inequality. After raising her own two daughters, she experienced such a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment and she realized whatever she was going to do, it needed to be about girls and about giving them the opportunity to achieve everything her own daughters had. And it had to be Africa. But where to start? There are 53 countries in Africa, so which one made the most sense? After reading many books and articles about Africa, she decided on Kenya and soon booked a flight to Nairobi to try to get started. In Kenya, Lotte found an NGO that was based in Africa and run by Africans. They showed her a school in the Kibera slums that needed to be rebuilt and right away, Lotte was engaged. For the next five years she would build and renovate 5 schools. “Initially all the projects were funded through AG”, says Lotte, “Our employees, distributors, salons, and suppliers were really interested in what I was doing in Africa, and they wanted to be involved”. AG built the first school through the profit from a customized promotional package depicting African schoolgirls on the box and featuring two bestselling AG products. It yielded $90,000. After 4 years of partnering with the NGO, Lotte decided it was time to take the reins and start her own not-for-
profit charitable society. It was through this initiative that One Girl Can was born in 2013. Although she continued to build schools for girls living in some of the most marginalized regions of Kenya and Uganda, she began providing high school and university scholarships for hundreds of girls and built a comprehensive mentoring program that now coaches more than 8500 girls a year. She began fundraising externally to increase the capabilities of the organization, and although AG and its partners and employees continue to be a driving force in supporting the efforts of One Girl Can, it now accounts for only 20% of One Girl Can’s revenue, donating over $365,000 annually to support the administrative costs. “Today, 35 of our 80 employees sponsor a girl directly themselves. One Girl Can has become so much a part of AG’s DNA, the two organizations are now inextricably woven together. One Girl Can would have never been able to become what it has without AG, and AG’s brand has become solidly fortified through its strong philanthropic stance. ‘We Give Back’ is one of AG’s three brand pillars that drive the decisions we make every day”. Lotte continues to explain that candidates applying for work at AG inevitably state that one of the main reasons they want to work for AG is because of depth of their philanthropy. Lotte says, “The reason it works is because it’s authentic and everyone in the company feels connected and involved. It’s created an unbreakable bond between us and our customers and brought a genuine humanity and purpose to the AG brand”. I asked Lotte to share her thoughts about the future of One Girl Can, and she said, “My focus is to work myself out of a job. One Girl Can needs to stand alone and live well beyond me to continue doing the work I started. I’m now recruiting for an Executive Director so that I can focus on programming and growth in Africa”.
Lotte runs One Girl Can the same way she does AG Hair, like a business, not just a charity, and she believes this has been the reason behind the huge growth they’ve experienced, and the strong foundation that’s been established. Nearing the end of our time together, I asked Lotte about AG and the plans for the future, and she explained, “we’re expanding into Europe as well as white labelling hair-care products for other companies, starting with Amazon. We have tons of runway to grow, and with every bottle AG sells, the donation to One Girl Can grows as well”. It’s a true integration of two companies focused on their impact on the world; one providing the resources and support, the other executing on a mutual philanthropic mandate. I asked Lotte to share her advice for others as it relates to philanthropy, impact and giving back. She responded, “You need to do what makes sense for your company and for yourself. If it isn’t authentic, your customers won’t be engaged. But the important thing is to do something, more now than ever. If you have a business that’s making a profit, you must have as part of your brand strategy, a program for giving back. It’s fundamental to the health wellbeing of your brand”. In closing our candid conversation, I asked Lotte for a final thought and her choice of words resonated deeply with me. “I thought being financially independent would be the ultimate fulfillment in life. Then I realized that giving back what you’ve earned is even more satisfying. Sharing your knowledge, networks, and resources to help others achieve even a measure of what you’ve been able to, is the most fulfilling feeling you can ever hope to attain. It’s also the right thing to do”.

WAMM!
WILSON AUDIO MASTER CHRONOSONIC There are among us rare individuals who are compelled to follow their passions, prepared to work hard and sacrifice for what they believe and, above all, not allow anyone to limit their dreams. Dave Wilson was such a person. Enzo Ferrari famously observed, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Enzo raced; Dave’s passion was for music and its reproduction. After years of research, Dave and his wife and lifelong business partner Sheryl Lee started their own company in 1974 and the first commercial product, the WAMM (Wilson Audio Modular Monitor), was the physical manifestation of his theories. The WAMM was a multi-module loudspeaker, each module physically adjustable in relationship to one another in the time domain. Decades later and after 5 years of development, Wilson Audio presented another milestone - the WAMM Master Chronosonic. Dave Wilson passed away in May 2018, making the Master Chronosonic not only his ultimate artistic expression, pushing the boundaries of Wilson Audio’s state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities while maintaining the hand-crafted guild culture for which Wilson Audio is famous, but his legacy piece. The hallmark of the Master Chronosonic’s technical achievement, and the principal factor central to its unique ability to sound utterly lifelike, is the Master Chronosonic Adjustable Array. The Master Chronosonic is capable of time-domain accuracy heretofore possible only in the theoretical realm. The Master Chronosonic Micrometer System gives the new WAMM an unprecedented level of adjustability. Module adjustability is refined down to a previously inconceivable five microseconds (five-millionths of a second) per adjustment increment. Special attention was paid to maintaining extreme rigidity in the movable areas. The flat-bed hardware supporting the tweeter and upper midrange modules utilizes a unique combination of Wilson’s latest composite, W-Material, and aluminum. The front-firing modules never interface with aluminum, but instead are attached to a W-Material substructure below, which provides extraordinary vibration termination. The result is a musical experience with a level of intellectual and emotional verisimilitude only bettered by the live musical event itself. It is a loudspeaker truly worthy of the term “Magnum Opus”. Only 70 pairs will be made, each pair at a price of US$925,000.

ARTS & MUSIC VANCOUVER’S ICONIC ART SCENE IN REVIEW by Oliver Finlay BASTILLE
CHARLI XCX
As Vancouver’s long summer days gave way to ever-earlier sunsets, the October nights came to life and Live Nation’s autumnal concert season kicked off when Charli XCX’s electro-pop vibes brought a party atmosphere to The Commodore Ballroom. Best known for her 2014 anthem “Boom Clap”, the British singersong writer is renowned for her innovative approach to exploring the boundaries of the pop genre and consequently, she was warmly received by a widely diverse crowd in attendance for her first headline set in Vancouver. She launched into her show with a tsunami of boisterous energy and the crowd, bolstered by her dynamic introduction, responded in fervent
union. The set continued with wave after wave of relentless intensity and Charli further endeared herself to the crowd, as she invited local drag personalities onto the stage to perform “White Mercedes”, accompanied by support act Brooke Candy. By the time she concluded the evening, with “1999 [Easyfun Remix]”, the air was heavy with perspiration and smiles were plastered across the faces of her enamoured following. Just a couple of days later, another Brit Pop act rolled into town, with London’s indie pop group, Bastille, performing at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena to promote their new album “Doom Days”. Released earlier in the year, “Doom Days” represents a reflection on contemporary global challenges and given the recent tumultuous political scene in the UK, not surprisingly eschews a more turbulently emotional mood than previous albums. The set was delivered in three acts from a uniquely designed stage that resembled something of a low budget, student apartment, whilst lead singer, Dan Smith, took the opportunity to explore the floor and mingle with the crowd, as the first act drew to a close with”Flaws”. A number of the band’s most popular hits, taken from their earlier albums “Bad Blood” and “Wild World”, such as “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Good Grief”, along with single “Happier”, were interspersed with their latest offerings that have already received positive acclaim, including “Joy” and “Those Nights”. Despite its status as their first and greatest hit, “Pompeii” was saved until the end and brought the night to a fitting close, with the audience in full voice as it accompanied a buoyant Smith. One of Live Nation’s 2018 highlights, DC collaborative Thievery Corporation, returned to The Commodore Ballroom at the end of November and delivered a bumper set that ran into the early hours. Thievery founder Rob Garza is effusive in his praise for their Vancouver fanbase and the group clearly enjoyed their recent visits enough to schedule back to back gigs this year. The range of styles, talents and characters that contribute to Thievery sets are so eclectic and as such enabled the skilful manipulation of the energy in the room throughout the evening. Sultry classics, such as “Lebanese Blonde”, “Omid (Hope)” and “Claridad” provided rich serenades, whilst the instrumental interludes and chill reggae beats like “Babylon Falling” and “Road Block”, provided a breather from the high tempo rap-rich shots of “Fight to Survive” and “Letter to the Editor”. The evening, which debuted an acoustic circle for the last section of the set, was another epic offering from the Thieves and their next visit can’t come soon enough. The hectic concert schedule continued with American DJ and production duo, The Chainsmokers, and whilst these guys may not necessarily be remembered for their song

writing, they certainly bring some energy and entertainment value to the stage. This is probably the most fire seen at a show since Kiss were in town and after kicking off proceedings by bringing support act, Lennon Stella, back on stage to preform “Takeaway”, they settled into showcasing their EDM tracks accompanied by some elaborate, albeit arguably gimmicky stage theatrics. Tracks like “Everybody Hates Me” and “Sick Boy” were delivered with considerably more power than their studio recordings offer, with Matt McGuire’s drumming contributing some straight up savagery. Whilst it might not have been the most sophisticated musical performance that Vancouver will ever see, with laser shows and motorcycle death cages, it hit the
spot for a Friday night in December. At the other end of the spectrum was Vancouver Opera’s performance of Verdi’s La Traviata, which played at the Queen Eliza-
THE CHAINSMOKERS
beth Theatre. Verdi’s emotionally charged portrayal of the tragic love story between Violetta, a French courtesan, and aristocrat, Alfredo, remains one of the most popular operas from the nineteenth century. Whilst the original setting was, then present day, Paris in the 1850s, Vancouver Opera’s version presented the story during the dance hall scene of the same city, some 70 years later and the set design sensationally reflected the immoderate taste for money, luxury
and extravagance that was en vogue at that time. From the outset, Emily Dorn’s interpretation of Violetta’s complex character, from her early reverence to her later demise at the hands of tuberculosis, was exceptional, whilst Chenye Yuan’s performance in the role as Giorgio Germont brought a refined power that was critically missing from Andrew Haji’s lead as Alfredo Germont. Vancouver Opera set a very high standard throughout their summer festival performances and whilst this may not have quite reached those heights, this was another very enjoyable evening at The Queen Elizabeth. Randall MacDonald - Taking Elegance To The Next Level
Global Gallavanting MEET RANDALL MACDONALD. The posh and stylish fabulista with a magical flair that draws a lot of attention has become a celebrity in his own right. He is a welcomed guest at many national and international events, an entertainer and actor, elite party planner and TV and Radio personality. Born in Edmonton, Randall and his partner Darcy were successful entrepreneurs owning retail stores in Edmonton and Vancouver. Though their retail empire is closed, they still split their time between the two cities and are regulars at luxury events. A style, etiquette and party planning expert on CTV, CKNW, CHED, print and, over the last few years, a jet-setting and globe-trotting phenomenon, Randall gets invitations to some of the most lavish and exclusive parties all around the globe. Partying with the Maharajah of Jodhpur, India? Check. The biggest Carnavale ball in Venice? Done. Private parties with the elite at chateaus in France? Obviously. The schedule for the 2020 season is packed, and we had a chance to sit down with Randall and Darcy to find out more about the fabulous lifestyle, the chic parties, and the upcoming projects before they embark on some new adventures. “2019 was a fantastic year, and 2020 promises to be even better,” Randall says with a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. “We will soon leave for Italy, to take part in the Il Ballo del Doge, the most exclusive event of the Carnival of Venice which Vanity Fair said “if you are only to attend one ball in your life make it this one.”” An event that gets worldwide attention, the Ball is in late February and will open another season of masquerade balls and luxury lifestyle parties for this dynamic duo. But life wasn’t always like this for Randall. “I was a bullied overweight boy growing up in a right-wing evangelical home. Think about the emotional journey when you have three evangelical ministers in your immediate family - and you realize you are gay. Even worse, when my older brother came out, I saw the reaction first hand.” Being taught that homosexuality was a choice, Randall decided to date girls and rein himself in. Though eventually settling down with his partner, he spent most of his life trying “to be all things to all people” as the good book says. Not realizing that people could sense his inauthenticity it wasn’t until he threw off the veil and embraced his inner glitter that people were drawn to him.
Only being able to watch old movies growing up, this is the one thing that he did bring from his childhood. Believing he would be going to dinner clubs in tails when he grew up, he has spent his whole life trying to recreate that glamour for himself and his circle. “I want to inspire people to do better, and give people something to aspire to,” Randall says. And with his outgoing personality and charisma, he soon found ways to use his experience and knowledge to help and empower others to be themselves, celebrate who they are, and then inspire others. “People have to realize that an income level, background and especially being the epitome of a nerd do not need to stop you from rubbing elbows with the glitterati and leading an interesting and exciting life.” For that, Randall has become the master. These days, Randall also works on several projects, including a new TV series that follows and chronicles his extravagant escapades, a T-Shirt line called “Randallisms”, a line of beard and hair products called “The Randall” made with the essence of his favourite of all drinks, champagne (he always travels with a suitcase full of bottles - ‘just in case’), and men’s accessories designed with Baroque Luxury that will debut later this year. “I am excited about all of it. And there is so much more. Too many ideas for a lifetime,” he laughs. “VIPness, the title for the TV show, is in the making for a while now. It’s a lot of work, especially as you have to travel with a TV crew, but we hope to get the first episodes out later this year. The trailer for the show is on my YouTube channel and has gotten great feedback. For now, my focus is on the product lines and, obviously, the Balls in Venice which take quite some time to plan because in addition each event involves a new bespoke 18th century outfit and wig.” His partner, Darcy, also took another item off his ‘bouquet’list. Randall is now officially a Lord! “Lord Randall Scott MacDonald! I am now the Lord of Glencoe!” Darcy purchased a registered plot in the Highlands, Scotland, in Randall’s name, which in return allows him the title of a Lord. We truly can’t think of anyone better suited for wearing this title! @randallsmacdonald

2020 AND BEYOND
A
NEW YEAR - NEW REAL ESTATE MARKET by Amanda Wood and Jesse Dean Cook
As we move into a new decade, many are wondering what to expect of the Vancouver real estate market here in 2020 and beyond. Before we move forward it’s always wise to look back and try our best to understand what factors have brought us to this place in history. When we began our last decade back in 2010, the market was starting to recover from the 2008 Financial Crisis that sent the number of sales plummeting, as well as prices soon thereafter. The number of sales rebounded quite quickly and from 2010-2014 there was quite a healthy market in terms of number of annual sales compared to prior year averages. West Vancouver was “discovered” in 2011 and had the highest number of MLS sales on record (1166).
The detached market here in Vancouver has been very slow for the past 3 years. 2018 across the board was the worst year on record for most areas as it related to the number of detached sales. West Van, North Van, East Van, Vancouver’s Westside and even Richmond’s detached totals for 2018 broke all the previous low records from 2008. The first half of 2019 had a number of record low totals for specific months in various areas, however, in the
102

second half of 2019 we started to feel some positive shifts which resulted in 2019 sales numbers just edging out 2018. The real shift in the market took place after Labour Day weekend. Suddenly, new detached listings that were correctly priced were selling right away. Most of these sales took place in the entry-level price range in each market, and this activity bumped up the prices, which in turn pushed some buyers into the mid-range product.
Given how much time buyers had been used to having when shopping for a home these past few years, there was suddenly a level of urgency to make a decision if the right home for you listed. Buyers who were on the sidelines saw other buyers decide to purchase, which in turn reflected the feeling of the industry experts that the prices have most likely settled. I believe that there is pent up demand right now and buyers who now feel the entry to mid-level product pricing has stabilized will buy in the Spring.
months. After a fairly strong 2017 in terms of number of sales in areas such as: Coal Harbour, Yaletown and Downtown Vancouver, these numbers went to new lows in 2018. Coal Harbour actually even had a worse year in 2019 with the high-end condo sales being impacted by factors such as (a) downsizers being unable to sell their homes and (b) foreigners not interested in all of the new taxes associated with owning a pied-à-terre in this city.
While the first half of 2019 was simply awful for condo sales in the downtown core, the second half saw a resurgence and there was one main reason for this; a reason why the attached market in some areas will recover much faster than the detached market in that same area. With the civil unrest taking place in Hong Kong over the summer, many holding Canadian passports What might help ensure sellers who are serious about selling take decided it was time to pack their bags. While it was unclear the time to list with a market accurate price is the newest BC where these new (or returning) people Tax Assessments that were mailed would buy, it became very clear by out January 1st. XBERG DUCK @ORANIA HOTEL - Named for the trendy Kreuzberg neighbourhood, influenced by Philipp Vogel’s experience in China, this exceptional four course duck menu is a must eat for anyone visiting Berlin. The first course is a deeply flavourful rich broth accompanied by a single heavenly dumpling filled with duck leg, liver and heart. Philipp imported a special oven from China which cooks whole duck in the traditional Peking way. He tweaks convention. The crispy roasted skin is thinly sliced from the duck table side then served with garlic cucumber, pickled radish, ginger, hoisin sauce and French crepes in lieu of the standard rice pancakes. The duck is placed back in the oven for just enough time to crisp the thin layer of fat left over the still pink and juicy breast; served with a Szechuan pepper sauce and a side of lightly picked bok choy. The final course, as in a typical Chinese banquet is rice, fried with duck leg, veggies, sausage and served with a raw egg you whirl through the hot dish for richness. Cocktails are heaven, as is the live jazz and the stunningly designed rooms in the hotel. www.orania.berlin.com
BASE FLYING @ALEXANDERPLATZ - Not for the faint of heart, this 125 meter jump off the roof of the Park Inn Hotel is one huge adrenalin rush with beyond fabulous views. DRY JANUARY GOING BOOZE-FREE THIS MONTH? Try Sipping These Low Or Non-Alcoholic Alternatives IT HAS BECOME an annual tradition for many people: Dry January. Ditching alcohol in the first month of the new year might be a New Year’s resolution in order to ‘detox’ a bit from the indulgent drinking that took place over the holidays, or to just generally cut down the alcohol consumption. As we all know, drinking does not really come with health benefits, does it? But what if you really don’t like the idea of some orange juice, milk or a caffeine-free tea after a long workday? What
if it is the taste of a good vino, the Pilsner or manly cocktail that you really like? Well, we went on a mission to find some alternatives for you. Non-alcoholic Beer Most of the big beer brands and a handful of craft breweries offer alcohol-free brews. You can find them in supermarkets and, interestingly enough, in liquor stores. “But that’s not real beer!” you may think. Wrong! Believe it or not, almost all non-alcoholic beers begin life as real beer, before the alcohol content is stripped through a heating process (non-alcoholic beer does contain some alcohol, although it’s generally less than 0.5% ABV). To avoid ending up sweet and syrupy, producers add bittering spices and plenty of hops. But does it really taste the same? Well, yes and no. Actually, more ‘no’. Here’s what we did: We conducted a blind test, as someone served us the ‘real deal’ and their non-alcoholic equivalents into identical glasses. Only one out of all the beers kinda fooled us, and interestingly enough it was the one that does not even exist as an alcoholic beer: Clausthaler! This German brewery has developed a process where fermentation is stopped before it turns into alcohol - and it works! We especially like their “Unfiltered Dry Hopped Alcohol Free”. We should also mention that we liked the Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, mostly, because the alcoholic version has flavours of citrus and white peach, and the non-alcoholic one mimics it pretty well. The other beers, however, didn’t really fool us. Some are okish, some are pretty bad.

Non-alcoholic Wine and Sparkling Wine Again, you can find it in supermarkets and liquor stores. But is there a non-alcoholic wine that has the complexity and length you’ll find in the real deal? Sorry, there really isn’t. BUT ... there are a few white and rosé wines, especially the ones with 0.5% alcohol that when served chilled, come fairly close and can serve as a refreshing alternative. When it comes to red wine, we recommend those that have been made in the same way as the real thing, even aging them in small oak barrels, before 99.5% of the alcohol is removed. Our winner: Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon (0.5% ABV). Our verdict for sparkling wine - get the sparkling cider from IKEA. Cocktails Now, this was the real kicker - how good can ‘mocktails’ be? We have had a few mocktails in the past, and although they sure looked like the real deal, they didn’t taste like it. Which doesn’t mean we didn’t like them! There are actually some really tasty faux cocktails out there. They just don’t fool us into thinking that they are the real thing - especially not those sugary juice-based ones with a paper umbrella sticking out of the top. But then we discovered ‘Seedlip’, distilled sugar and additivefree non-alcoholic spirits, that can actually give you the same “kick in the mouth” as real liquor. At least that’s what we’d heard. So we got the three different (and very pretty) bottles: Spice 94; Grove 42 and Garden 108 and went to work.. Made with herbs and botanicals as well as spices and citrus peels, Seedlip’s products are definitely different, and we know quite a few bartenders here in town who use it for their non-alcoholic creations. Spice 94’s ingredients include cardamom, Jamaican all-spice berries, citrus peel, American oak and casacarilla bark, whilst Garden 108 is even more floral with spearmint, rosemary, thyme, hops, hay and, yes, English peas. Grove 42, is a citrus blend of oranges, lemon peel, ginger and lemongrass. Very cool ... but how does it taste? We tried several of the recipes Seedlip shares on their website, and also started to create some of our own. The result? Not too bad, definitely the best of the mocktails we have had so far. Our favourite is the ‘Nogroni’ which gets pretty close to the real deal. We have listed our three favourites along with the recipes on the right.
From simple serves to something more special, Seedlip are the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirits to make delicious non-alcoholic cocktails at home. THE SOUR BLOSSOM INGREDIENTS Seedlip Grove 42: 50ml/2oz Fresh Lemon Juice: 15ml/0.5oz Blood Orange Juice: 20ml/0.75oz Sugar Syrup: 15ml/0.5oz GLASS & GARNISH Coupe Garnish w/ Orange Leaf METHOD Shake all ingredients and double strain into Coupe glass
THE NOGRONI
Non-Alcoholic Whiskey and Gin Ritual Zero Proof only launched last September and can’t keep up with demand. However, whilst Ritual offers the same smell, taste, and burn of the traditional liquor, it is meant for use in cocktails, not to sip neat or on the rocks. They even attracted the attention of spirits giant Diageo (Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, Smirnoff, Don Julio), who bought stakes in both Seedlip and Ritual Zero Proof. So, what did we learn? Taking a short-term hiatus from drinking is never a bad idea and definitely won’t hurt as far as your health is concerned. And better sleep quality and maybe a degree of weight loss sound pretty good, eh? But be aware that whilst any nature of time-defined deprivation might have benefits in the short run, you might end up overindulging once you reach your goal. Also, particularly with the non-alcoholic alternatives such as juices and sodas, be aware that they often contain 20–26 grams of sugar per cup (240 ml), so depending on the amount you drink, you may still struggle to achieve your health targets in relation to your weight. Hopefully our little experiments have identified at least some acceptable alternatives for consumption during times like dry January, or when you have been assigned as the designated driver.

It is a location with a beautiful view of English Bay, and yet, since the closing of iconic Raincity Grill a few years ago, its former location at 1193 Denman Street has struggled to become something new for diners. Things may have changed last summer when Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar opened. This seafood-focused restaurant (complete with cozy, seasonal patio) was our destination on a rainy Monday night in early December. The Interior of Papi’s is warm, with a casual vibe, and, we can’t stress this enough, perfectly lit. The centre piece is a beautiful full-wall mural of the Sea Goddess, Amphitrite. We started the meal with several superb cocktails from the Something Adventurous category: the “Twilight Vibe”, with vodka, brandy, amaretto, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, star anis and lemon spritz, & “Misted Morning”, with gin, blackberry, lemon, juniper, sweetened orange and charred conifer. Neither were too sweet, and both drinks were much appreciated on a chilly night.
Papi’s appealing appetizers are many and we could not possibly limit our selection to just a few. We had heard about the Fish Tacos from a number of people and we are happy to say, they did not disappoint, nor did the unique Fried Oysters with a charcoal batter and lemon BEN HOWARD

crème fraiche (two oysters were the right amount to serve). We finished up with Ahi Tuna Ceviche in a citrus marinade with corn & pickled shallots, followed by Octopus with red pepper & smoked paprika. All were excellent and perfect for sharing. In between courses we sipped on several glasses of BC wine (a Howling Bluff Sauvignon Blanc and a Black Cloud Pinot Noir, both from the Okanagan) and chatted with GM Alessandro De Pieri. He had worked all over the world, including London, Venice, and Shanghai, before he made his way to Vancouver in 2019. He brought in Head Chef, Jefferson Alvarez, familiar among many Vancouverites for his work at places like DiVino Wine Bar, Fraiche, and Cacao. For De Pieri and his team, this was a chance to create a place that feels like your home, like a family environment. “I feel like the creativity and the hospitality are in sync”, he told us, and says his favourite compliment regarding Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar came a few weeks earlier from a former Raincity Grill regular: “This diner came up to me and said Papi’s is the new Raincity Grill”, Di Pieri says, “and that is the best compliment we can receive”. The list of Mains are diverse and offer something for evLEON BRIDGES eryone including Organic Beef Burgers, to Fish n’ Chips (becoming one of their most popular items), to Clam Spaghetti with white wine and herbs to Lobster Risotto. For us, seafood was the goal, choosing the Seared Arctic Char & Clams in a smoky-tasting bonito broth with seasonal vegetables – zucchini, potatoes, and brussels sprouts. This was a perfectly prepared final course! Reviewing the night, we were left with this thought: a great variety of uniquely prepared food and very reasonably priced, something which is becoming all too rare in this city of ours. As we departed, Di Pieri’s last words were succinct: “We’ve got a million dollar view but that doesn’t mean the food has to be expensive”.
