e are coming to the end of another year – one in which, thanks to your help, our 17,000 colleagues in the field have once again risen to the challenge of helping millions of people affected by war.

As I write, a fifth of the world’s population is living in areas affected by conflict, violence or instability. The efforts of the ICRC to come to the aid of victims of conflict and violence are thus more important than ever.

This year alone, the world witnessed the plight of hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of Mosul and Aleppo, trapped in the middle of the fighting. These once great cities now lie in ruins and the people who remain there have been left traumatized.

Reconstruction will take years.

And in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Afghanistan, war has been raging for so many years the world seems to have forgotten all about them.

But every day there, men and women of extraordinary courage continue to fight to survive and rebuild their lives. They deserve our attention and our support.

Our staff are present in all of these countries, working alongside the victims, listening to their needs and

helping them every day. Despite the difficulties and dangers we face, our neutral, impartial and independent approach – a cornerstone of the ICRC’s operations for more than 150 years – means we can reach those most in need when no one else can.

Every life saved or rebuilt through our efforts is a victory you have helped us achieve. Again, I offer you my heartfelt thanks for your solidarity and your trust in the work of our teams in the field.

Together, we are infinitely stronger.

I wish you and your loved ones a very happy festive season, and I hope that we can continue to count on your support in 2018.

Schoolgirls’ sushi-sale success

When it comes to helping others, you are never too young to start. Take Emily, Yuri and Sneha – three 13-year-old pupils at the International School of Geneva, who decided to organize a sushi sale at the school to raise funds for Yemen. As a young girl, Sneha had lived there with her family, and the plight of people in this country ravaged by three years of bloody conflict moved her to act.

The girls planned the event for early 2017, doing all the publicity and sourcing the ingredients themselves. The event was a great success, with all the sushi selling out on the day! In February, the three girls came to ICRC headquarters to hand over the proceeds of the sale and were welcomed by our colleague Véronique. Our heartfelt thanks go to the girls for this lovely idea.

Outbreaks of violence force hundreds of thousands of people to flee Rakhine State in Myanmar Rakhine is the poorest region of Myanmar. In recent years, repeated flooding and communal violence have made the lives of people living there even more difficult.

The recent wave of violence, which began at the end of August, has forced more than 500,000 people to flee their homes and cross the border into Bangladesh.

The suddenness and severity of the crisis presented humanitarian organizations with huge logistical challenges in getting help to these people quickly. The ICRC – the only international organization already present in the north of Rakhine, working alongside the Myanmar Red Cross Society – was quick to respond, stepping up its operations

We are helping those who have lost everything by distributing food, providing emergency health care via our mobile clinics and helping people search for their missing loved ones.

Do you know how many people around the world are reported missing?

In countries that have experienced war, violence and migration the number of disappearances is frightening.

In Colombia, for example, after 50 years of conflict and despite the recent ceasefire, more than 85,000 people are still officially reported missing. To date, just 30 per cent of cases of missing persons recorded in the country have been resolved.

But sometimes, miracles do happen, even after decades of separation. “It was like dying and coming back to life,” says Pedro, 31, speaking about being reunited with his mother, Cristina. They became separated in the 1980s while fleeing the fighting that was tearing their country,

A whole life lived without knowing peace

Imagine living in a region that has not known peace for generations. For half a century now, the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank have lived under occupation – the longest in modern history. “Being stopped at checkpoints on the way to school, when going to see the doctor, or just doing the shopping is part of daily life here,” says Mahmous Abu Qbeita, who lives near the West Bank city of Hebron. “We’re used to it now. But sometimes, I still ask myself why we have to live like this.” The Israelis, for their part, have lived for decades in a climate of constant security threats.

The ICRC has been working in the region since the occupation began in 1967 and remains active there today. As well as providing emergency assistance to its inhabitants in times of acute crisis our teams also respond to more long-term needs. We work hard every day to restore hope to people who feel they are up against a brick wall. But every year it gets more and more difficult to finance our work in a region that has fallen into the category of forgotten conflict. The support of our donors is vital, therefore, to ensure that the people who live there don’t feel completely abandoned by the rest of the world.

Switzerland shows solidarity with Syrians

February 2017 Syria appeal Your donations in response to our nationwide appeal in February 2017 were enough to help us feed more than 285,000 people in Syria for a month. That’s about the same as the population of a city the size of Geneva, so thank you so much for your generosity.

Because the ICRC is neutral and works together with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, we can get aid to parts of Syria that few other humanitarian organizations can access. By the end of August 2017, our teams had carried out

35 emergency-aid operations across front lines.

Our activities help save many lives.

But after almost seven years of conflict the Syrian people remain in great need.

Let’s not forget them!

Regular-giving appeal for long-term conflicts The average length of time the ICRC has been working in our ten main operational contexts around the world is more than 30 years. These protracted conflicts cause immeasurable suffering, mass displacement and chronic poverty. Once short-term emergency relief is withdrawn, entire generations are being lost because they do not receive the regular humanitarian support they need.

That’s why almost two thirds of the ICRC’s budget goes towards protracted conflicts. Financing humanitarian assistance in those countries is very difficult, but we cannot abandon those people.

They need us to give them hope and help them rebuild their lives.

Your regular donations are an enormous help to us in providing humanitarian assistance, particularly in these often under-financed situations. We are immensely grateful for your loyal support.

Together we can beat hunger Funding appeal for the April–May 2017 food crisis The chaos brought about by years of conflict in South Sudan, north-eastern Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen has resulted in serious food shortages in these four regions.

But thanks to your donations, the ICRC, which has worked in these regions for years, has stepped up its efforts. Your contributions were part of a recent strong surge in humanitarian support, which, according to the United Nations, has helped put a temporary halt to the famine declared in two regions of South Sudan and avoid a food crisis in other affected countries.

But the situation is still a long way from normality and we cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal yet. With your help, we will continue working in these countries to provide the assistance they desperately need.

Behind Cecilia’s smile lies the tragedy of forced displacement

In South Sudan, the ICRC organizes daily distributions of grain, tools and food. One day, while in Rokon, in the south of the country, providing essential supplies to 13,000 beneficiaries, we meet Cecilia and

her mother Vajda, who are patiently waiting their turn. Vajda tells us the story of what brought her to this place with her five young children. Her husband had been killed a year ago while out looking for food. She was so frightened she decided to leave.

Says Vajda: “Life in my village used to be good, but now… The conflict has changed everything. My husband was a good man. He worked hard and provided for us. Now, it’s all down to me.”

Thousands of people have been forced to flee and abandon everything they own, which means they cannot work the region’s fertile land.

Cyril Jaurena, head of the ICRC’s office in the region, explains: “The people here are used to farming but they don’t have the opportunity to plant and grow crops now. By providing them with seed and tools, we give them the possibility to provide for themselves. We also distribute food rations, so that families

have something to eat while waiting for their harvest.”

Even though Vajda and her children are far from home, the host community gave them some land to cultivate.

“They understand that we did not come here by choice,” she says.

When the distribution is finished, Vajda, with Cecilia’s help, gathers up her parcels. These will enable her to feed her children over the coming days and start sowing her plot of land to ensure the survival of her family. www.icrc.org/supportus | December 2017 | 09

MEET OUR TEAMS THEY WORK ON THE FRONT LINE Today, the ICRC has almost 17,000 staff working in more than 80 countries around the world.

These men and women are a kaleidoscope of personalities, experiences, backgrounds and aspirations but they are all driven by a common purpose: to work for an organization whose values they share and through which they can actively help the victims of conflict.

Facts and figures ICRC employees are all professionals. This is because working in a conflict zone requires specific qualifications and previous experience in the field.

Contrary to popular belief, not all ICRC employees are doctors.

Humanitarian work requires myriad occupational specialists – doctors, certainly, but also logisticians, lawyers, agronomists, psychologists, former members of the armed forces, administrators, engineers, etc.

The majority of our workforce – some 14,200 employees – are local staff. Around 2,800 of our staff around the world are expatriates. Most of them receive a different posting every year to ensure teams remain impartial.

Seven colleagues speak about their work in the field Timothée (Tim) Pakouyowou is an orthotistprosthetist in an ICRC-supported physical rehabilitation centre in Goma. A Togolese national, he has worked for the ICRC for three years.

Anne Müller, an ICRC head nurse, works at the Ndosho hospital in Goma. This experienced humanitarian, originally from Germany, is on her 12th field posting.

Roberto Lang is based in Kandahar, where he is in charge of visits to detention facilities. It is the first ICRC field posting for the young Swiss from Zurich.

Abdoul Wadood is a Pakistani expatriate engineer who has worked for many years in the humanitarian field. He helps rebuild public infrastructure that has been destroyed or damaged.

Layal Barjoud is a young doctor from Homs, who chose to remain in the city as head of health for the ICRC. Jérôme Sess is a doctor from Côte d’Ivoire who settled in Canada. He is in Kaga Bandoro on his first posting for the ICRC but has worked in conflict zones for many years.

Moses Namanya, a Ugandan agronomist, specializes in agricultural development. In early 2016, following his first posting for the ICRC in Yemen, he came to the Central African Republic to develop projects to improve food security.

There are very few humanitarian organizations still present on the ground and people are in desperate need. Malnutrition is rife and the health situation is disastrous.

in Syria, was a thriving city before the conflict. Now, more than 80 per cent of it has been destroyed. Two thirds of its inhabitants have fled and conditions for those who remain are extremely tough, even though the fighting has eased. The ICRC has been working in Syria since 1967 and was able to react quickly when the conflict erupted, particularly in Homs.

KANDAHAR

is Afghanistan’s second city.

An important centre of culture and trade for centuries, the city now – like much of the rest of the country – lies broken after decades of war. The ICRC has had a team in Kandahar for 21 years. Following the death of seven colleagues in Afghanistan earlier this year, we decided to scale back our activities in the country significantly, although we do still maintain a presence in Kandahar.

in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the capital of North Kivu province (Great Lakes region) in the east of the country. For more than 20 years the area has experienced successive periods of violence and massive displacement. Our office in Goma works on many fronts, providing both emergency relief and long-term assistance.

ICRC: “What made you want to work for the ICRC?”

Tim My first encounter with the ICRC was as a young beneficiary. In 1992, my family fled the violence in Lomé, Togo, and we ended up in a refugee camp in neighbouring Benin. The first assistance we received was from the ICRC. I still remember the blankets and hot meals they handed out. We didn’t know a soul in Benin, so the ICRC was a real support to us and gave us hope.

Even then, at such a young age, I said to myself: “One day, I will work for the ICRC.”

Jérôme For me, the ICRC is one of the foremost humanitarian organizations. Our mandate to remain neutral, impartial and independent makes it easier for us to reach people in need. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to work the way we do. Take the clashes in Kanga Bandoro last July. Most of the humanitarian organizations left but the ICRC stayed behind. We went to look for the wounded, treated them and evacuated them to Bangui.

Roberto It was the idea of helping people on both sides of the front line – the ICRC upholds this principle like no other organization. Also, the opportunity to make a real difference to victims’ lives. Because of its professionalism and experience, the ICRC can respond rapidly and with the right

resources. And for me, as a Swiss, there is, perhaps, a particular sense of pride in serving an organization that was founded in my country, more than 150 years ago. Working for the ICRC is not just a job, it’s a vocation.

Layal I used to work as a doctor in a national hospital, where we saw all kinds of suffering on a daily basis.

Things went downhill rapidly once the war started: medical supplies became more and more scarce and patients were just waiting to die. So, when the ICRC announced it was recruiting a health worker, I signed up. I knew that’s where I wanted to be, where I could be of most help to people.

Anne, head nurse My job is to provide the best possible medical care to people wounded in conflict in places where that care is needed most. We treat a lot of seriously injured people, who sometimes arrive in waves. Working in a hospital can be exhausting and adrenalin-fuelled but, at the same time, enormously satisfying. The teamwork is incredible. Above all, we offer a chance of survival and a place of respite for the many people caught up in the horror of conflict every day.

Moses, agronomist In the Central African Republic, food security is a huge problem. The rate of malnutrition among children is rising because the crisis is stopping people from farming the land. So the seed distributions we organize are really important. We’re also digging wells close to villages to encourage people to resume farming. People are so grateful when we carry out distributions in very isolated areas. When I first got here, we were working in a particularly hard-hit area and there was a mother who was crying because she hadn’t received her kit during one of our distributions. I said we would come back with one for her, but she didn’t believe me. Then, the head of the village stepped in and said: “The ICRC always keeps its word. They will come back.” And, indeed, we did; we went looking for this woman and gave her a kit. She was so happy.

Tim tells the story behind this photo: “This is Augustin and me during a physiotherapy session.

Augustin is a double amputee but here he is, up and about and getting around. His village was attacked on two occasions – in June 2013 and March 2016. The first time, he was wounded in the right leg and the second, the left leg.

The seriousness of his injuries meant amputation was required both times. Just imagine what he went through! But each time, we made him a prosthesis and he learned to walk with it. To see him up on his feet, thanking the ICRC, was a truly special moment. It is because of Augustin and the many others to whom we have been able to give a second chance that I am so proud to work for the ICRC.”

“What is your day-to-day life like, on the ground?”

Abdoul After six years of conflict, Homs lies mostly in ruins. It bears the heavy scars of war and feels like a ghost town. Reconstruction will take years.

Nevertheless, as an expatriate, I live a pretty normal life. I can go out – to restaurants, hospitals, religious centres. That makes life easier.

Roberto Here in Kandahar, we live and work in the same building, and it’s very comfortable. Unfortunately, we can only go out for work-related reasons – in my case, to visit prisons – because of the security problems.

Being able to have direct contact with detainees and the authorities is certainly very rewarding, but I do sometimes feel quite cut off from the lives of ordinary people here.

However, we do get lots of visitors to our office every day.

Anne I’m currently based in Goma, where life is pretty comfortable. I live on the banks of Lake Kivu, where the natural environment and climate are wonderful. I am generally free to move around; I can get to restaurants and the market, and I can even do a bit of sport and meet friends for coffee. Living conditions were far more basic during my last posting, where there were no toilets or showers. I’ve also lived in places where security measures were very strict and we could only travel between the hospital and our accommodation.

“What are the ups and downs of life as a humanitarian?”

Abdoul Working for the ICRC, close to the front lines, you know you are potentially risking your life. I understand that this is part of my work, that it’s a sacrifice I have to make.

And seeing the smiles on the faces of children and all the people we have helped makes it all worthwhile.

Layal In my work for the ICRC I witness the suffering of my people every day. But I am also fully aware of the importance of what we do here. Recently, in a corridor of the hospital, I met the grandfather of a young man who had been injured in a mortar attack. He was extremely worried because the hospital was refusing to cover the patient’s medical costs. He started crying in despair, certain that his grandson was going to die. The ICRC stepped in and paid for the young man’s treatment so that he could stay in hospital. When the doctor told us a few days later that the patient was going to survive, the look of gratitude his grandfather gave me made me feel like I was walking on air.

Jérôme I just got married. My wife works for Doctors Without Borders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Being apart is not always easy to manage. This is definitely the biggest sacrifice for me at the moment. But we got to know each other while living this life, so we’re used to it by now and we understand and support each other. And whenever I see a child who is well enough to leave our hospital, I share those moments of joy with my wife.

Tim What is hardest for me is being away from my two young daughters, aged four and six. I miss my family terribly.

But I know that I’m needed here. With our help, our patients manage to walk again and find hope after all the hardships they have endured.
