Nestled in the hills high above the coast (and thus a few refreshing degrees cooler), this charming town is perfectly placed to explore the plentiful hiking, biking and nature trails to be found in the surrounding mountain range’s lush, green folds. Further afield still, the remote town of Aljezur feels a magical world away from the buzz of the coastal towns. The Romans established Monchique as a spa town. The “sacred waters” of the town were believed to cure ailments and even contain magical powers. The spa received a royal stamp of approval in 1495 when King João II visited it. SAGRES The town at the tip of the Algarve from which you can gaze out to sea at the most south-westerly point of continental Europe, from the sheer cliff of the Cape of St Vincent. Sagres fort allows you to understand Portugal’s rich nautical past. Henry the Navigator established his famous school for navigation in Sagres, where he employed cartographers, shipbuilders and instrument makers. Sagres port is still a centre for boat building and lobster fishing.

East Algarve FARO The Algarve’s capital is where you will arrive if travelling by plane. It is normally overlooked by most tourists, probably due to the fact that it does not have as many accessible beaches. Despite being a city and the Algarve’s capital, in true Algarvian style, it retains an easy-going air with a walkable, pedestrianised and plenty of places to eat, making it an enjoyable day out. That said, there’s plenty to satisfy culture vultures within the city’s historic walled centre, from museums and historic buildings to the regenerated neighbourhood of Mouraria and Vila Adentro, the Moorish-influenced old town. Faro Cathedral, the macabre Capela do Ossos (chapel of bones) historic buildings and the boat trips along the Ria Formosa or to Praia de Faro mean there are plenty of sights to take in.

BEACHES This being the Algarve, the east also offers an abundance of beaches to enjoy, boasting quiet coves and even secluded ilhas (islands) that are accessible only by boat where you can experience a real Robinson Crusoe moment: the feeling that you’re the first to set foot on the gorgeous golden sand. VIA ALGARVIA The Algarve is starting to acquire a well-deserved reputation as a top walking destination in Europe. The Via Algarvia is a 305km long walking route, running west from the Spanish border all the way to the western outpost of Sagres. The eastern stretches of the route are not crowded and you can walk kilometres without seeing another hiker. Walk from Alcoutim and enjoy the view down towards the coast in the distance. MUSEU DO TRAJE DO ALGARVE (COSTUME MUSEUM OF THE ALGARVE) The Costume Museum in São Brás de Alportel is not just a museum but a focal point for the local community. The museum and grounds you see today was the home of the Dias, Andrade and Sancho families for over 130 years and was typical of that occupied by wealthy families from the end of the 19th century onwards. Its landscaped gardens, servants’ house, stables, workshops, a vegetable garden, and a working well are a reminder of the days of old. Miguel Dias de Tarde was the last person to own the property prior to converting it to a museum and, in

35 About Ideal Homes

IDEAL HOMES PORTUGAL is a multi-award winning real estate agency established in 2012 by Christopher White. A well-travelled British ex-pat with experience in the real estate industry, Chris saw the market potential within the local property industry, which he felt was not being fulfilled. His vision was to further open the Algarve to foreigners from around the world and, in doing so, offer exceptional end-to-end solutions. From the initial enquiry about a property, the viewing experience, through to enabling expert legal and financial advice along with mortgage consultations, the goal was to provide a one-stop-shop for all clients. Chris wanted to ensure that clients were well-informed and confident in their investment by providing the required support to navigate the local buying process. Chris’ thinking proved successful and after two and a half years, the business relocated its head office to the prestigious Vila Sol resort in Vilamoura. Nine years on, Ideal Homes Portugal is regarded as one of the premier real estate agencies in the Algarve and due to this success, a second office has been opened in Lagos. Trust, service and value underpin the company’s core principles. With an expanding range of services such as Rental and Property Management, bespoke Finance and Mortgage solutions, Currency Exchange, Listing, Buying, Property Development and Projects, these values continue to be upheld. Ideal Homes’ services and solutions are no longer just for existing clients but are open to any property owners who need professional and reliable support in the Algarve. Tailoring the property experience to the client, Ideal Homes Portugal carefully identifies the needs of the individual, ensuring their investment is a considered, enjoyable and worry-free experience. Whether your purchase is for permanent relocation, retirement, rental income through investment, second home or a holiday home, We will be with you every step of the way.
