Linear-fluorescent light fixtures had been installed throughout the building in the 1970s. By studying vintage photos, the design team was able to source pendant light fixtures in keeping with the style of the original fixtures. The $10.6-million project was completed in August 2012, five years after initial planning began. The renovation has been well received by students and staff, said Laird.

“This is an important, almost iconic building for the school,” he said. “The school has a very long and rich history. It’s a beautiful building and I think the school really wanted to have the renovation reflect the integrity and character of the original building.” Perhaps the best indication of how well the Phillips Hall project has been received: ARC is currently working on a similar renovation of the building next door.
