Bountiful Blueberries in Shoemakersville
Blueberry lovers, rejoice! You can pick-your-own at Deerfoot Farm in Shomakersville this season (through mid-July), just bring your own container. Your bounty is charged by the weight of just the blueberries themselves. Run by Jaime Linn Brown on a family farm once owned by her husband’s grandparents in 1947, blueberries are just part of the current-day operations. A winery is also on site, complete with a tasting room that operates Saturdays and Sundays from Noon to 5pm. When the weather is nice, visitors are welcome to pack a picnic and enjoy it at a nearby table and to watch the majesty of the horses roaming across the way. Jaime encourages those unfamiliar with Deerfoot Farm to pay a visit and to support the local agriculture community. “Supporting small farms like ours boosts related businesses and provides jobs in industries such as mechanics, suppliers, retail, logistics and more. Local food also has a much smaller carbon footprint and we have some of the best soil and growing potential in the county,” she says. Visit at 1492 Ridge Rd., Shoemakersville or online at deerfootfarm.com.

Prepping YOUR PET FOR Pampering
BY NIKKI M. MURRY
There are all kinds of avenues for treating your pet to something special nowadays. Perhaps you shower your dog with his or her favorite toys or treats. Or maybe you want to gift them with a trip to the groomer for a spa day or to your local doggie daycare for some playtime while you’re hard at work. If you’re considering one of the latter two, keep these tips in mind for a more positive experience…
BRING A COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL HISTORY.
A good daycare facility will want to know if your pup is up-todate on his or her vaccines, if he or she has been neutered or spayed, if you are using flea and tick prevention and whether or not they’ve had their Bordetella vaccine to help in preventing the spread of Kennel Cough, which is highly contagious.
ASK ABOUT CERTIFICATIONS.
Does the person supervising your pet know important procedures like basic pet first aid and CPR? At least one person at a doggy daycare should be certified in both.
CHECK FOR CLEANLINESS.
Before you book a day at the groomer or for playtime at a daycare facility, do a pop-in or plan a time to meet the people in charge and to check out the facilities. With many animals sharing the same space, you’ll want to be sure strict cleaning procedures are put in place.
MAKE SURE THEY MEET YOUR DOG.
A great groomer or doggie daycare should request a meet and greet with your dog before he or she spends an extended period of time with them and before you invest in their services. They should look to learn about your pooch’s temperament – likes and dislikes – and tailor your pet’s experience accordingly. On your end, be upfront about your dog’s great AND not-sogreat characteristics. It’s in everyone’s best interest.
KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
Don’t assume you know all about the services provided. If you have questions, ask them upfront. At a doggy daycare, for example, you might inquire what a typical day is like, what downtime opportunities are available, if snacks are fed and
the like. You might also ask about amenities and extras, like if they have a camera system you can tune into, or if a groomer does special baths with allergyfriendly shampoos and so on.
BEGIN
PREPARING AT HOME.
Especially for pup’s first trip to the groomer, you can work on things to get him or her ready. Most likely, they’ll be groomed on an elevated surface, so practice that by placing your puppy on a table (while attended, of course). You can also get them used to being handled by touching all parts of their body, including their toes, nails, and their face. Getting them familiar with brushing is also a great idea.
START YOUNG.
If you have a puppy, exposing him or her to experiences like meeting people and other dogs on walks, or even via a puppy socialization class, is essential to kicking things off on the right foot. If you start early, problems can be worked through, and it will likely be easy going as your dog ages and moves into new experiences.

Q:What made you want to make the transition from teaching to working for your dad at Riverview?
I had my son, took a year of maternity leave, and I didn’t like the idea of paying someone to watch my son for me to go teach other people’s children. When I had my daughter, we decided that I would stay with kids. My sister had been in college and working for my dad part-time, so I asked him if I could work part-time, and I’ll never forget the moment I asked him. We were sitting on the back steps of the house, and he said, “Well I guess I’m letting my heart rule my head, so we’ll try it.”
Q:When did you step into a leadership role with the company? It was around 1986 or 1987 when we built the first garden center, which was the first retail site. I went full-time once my daughter went to school. Then, in 1995 or 1996, my dad transitioned the business to my sister and me, and I became the president. I ran the business with my dad’s help through 2006, and we built an additional 4,000 square feet into the garden center, and 19 days later, he died and I became the sole owner. I’m 71 and still work full-time and have no intention of ever completely going away. I even helped unload a truck a couple of weeks ago…but I am working on starting to disperse responsibilities and to transition the business to my children, Alaina and Aleks.”
here 47 years. We’re working on the succession plan so that my children have that ability to choose loyal people, too.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about Riverview?
My favorite part is getting to see and work with my kids and grandkids who all grew up here. Alaina and Aleks grew up coming along with me in the summer to help and roam the woods. I have a grandson that is 9 years old who can probably tell you just as much about the business as my employees. My twin grandchildren spend a lot of time here, and so does Alaina’s son. My son and his wife also met at Riverview. Aleah is now our Gardens & Gifts manager.
Q:What do you do when you are not working?
Riverview has been the lead landscaper for Restoring Hope of Berks County since 2011, and I became the chair from 2014-2020. My son Aleks is still on the board as the vice chair, and I’ve moved to fundraising. Every year we choose a working middle class family with a special need, and in nine days’ time we restore their home with volunteers who donate their time, skills and materials.

Reasons to Visit A llenberry Resort
BY NIKKI M. MURRY | PHOTOS COURTESY ALLENBERRY RESORT
Summertime is traveling time, but you don’t have to go far to relax and refresh. Take a trip to nearby Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs and you’ll feel like you’re worlds away.
1. Appreciate the History.
Allenberry was founded by relatives of Davy Crocket in the late 1700s. Today the property is owned by the Kennedy family, but the resort happily extends cultural, agricultural, artistic, wellness and outdoor enthusiast offerings to the community and to visiting guests.
2 . Awesome Accommodations.
Book a stay in a historic home, a modern lodge or a cozy cottage. There’s something to suit nearly every style and all are exquisitely designed. Some feature fireplaces, Jacuzzis and decks overlooking the beautiful outdoor surroundings.
3. Activities Galore.
There’s no shortage of things to do while at Allenberry. You can make your trip as active, or as laid back, as you’d like. Enjoy a bike ride, swim in the saltwater pool, hike the nearby Appalachian Trail, or play a game or two of Pickleball.
4. Fishing Fun.
Consider yourself a fishing enthusiast? Then Allenberry is a must-visit! The resort featuring the banks of the Yellow Breeches Creek is Orvis-endorsed for fly fishing. Those looking to start fly fishing or to pick up new tips can learn from TCO Fly Shop at a fly-fishing school held on property.
5. Decadent Dining.
Head to The Barn Restaurant for an amazing meal. Locally sourced items featured on the menu include Korean Style Pierogies, Coconut Curry Mussels, Cornmeal Crusted Trout and Eggplant Manicotti.
6 . An Iconic Sweet Treat.
Don’t leave Allenberry without indulging in its famous dessert: the sticky bun. With or without nuts, it’s loved near and far, with many people ordering the baked good to be shipped for special occasions. Find them in The Breeches Café.
7. Ahh at the Spa.
To truly revive, rejuvenate and relax, head to the SCG Spa at Allenberry for a variety of treatments. The site is known for The Superhuman Protocol™, a form of biohacking utilizing three of earth’s natural elements to restore order to the body: magnetism, oxygen and light. Also offered is IV Vitamin Therapy, permanent makeup services and skincare in the form of facials and peels. And that’s just a sampling. scgskin.com
8. Take in a Show. The resort is also home to The Playhouse at Allenberry, renovated as recently as 2017. The nonprofit theatre production company presents memorable shows for a wide range of audiences. Scheduled for July 21-Aug. 6 is The Sound of Music keystonetheatrics.com

A Berks Business Success Story
BY BELL MEDIA GROUP & GRCA MARKETING TEAM
Editor’s note: The following story was written as a part of GRCA member storytelling campaign. To read the entire story behind Berks • Fire • Water Restorations, Inc. scan the included Flowcode.
In the summer of 2000, Ted Lavender decided he’d had enough of corporate life. He was tired of inefficient management and a lack of peoplefocused practices.
He’d spent the 10 years prior as a claims adjuster and manager, which had opened his eyes to the need for a full-service restoration company in Berks County that could handle an insurance-related loss from beginning to end.
After some heartfelt and serious discussions, Ted and his wife Lisa decided to go for it. Equipped with
drive, passion and an entrepreneurial spirit, the duo first worked out of their home and their personal vehicles. Vehicles that — oddly enough — were cemented into Berks • Fire • Water Restorations, Inc.’s brand in an unexpected way.
Ted drove a gold vehicle; Lisa, a dark green one. To make the vehicles look more professional and cohesive, they decided to make the lettering on each car complimentary. They stenciled gold letters on the green vehicle and green letters on the gold vehicle.
Although they’ve long since graduated from those early personal vehicles and upgraded to a full fleet, the colors green and gold stuck. Today, green and gold emblazon everything from the company vehicles to their logo to their team shirts — an homage to their early days that’s now a permanent part of their brand legacy.
But it’s not just their brand and their fleet of vehicles that have experienced extraordinary transformation. Always willing to dig into their industry and experiment with new services and solutions, Berks • Fire • Water Restorations, Inc. has grown steadily over the past two decades. Under Ted and Lisa’s guidance, the company quickly expanded from a “mom-and-pop” shop into a thriving business. In 2002, after just two years in business, they crossed the $1 million in revenue mark; in subsequent years, they would also navigate through three location changes, multiple new service line rollouts and a rapid staff expansion.

Why do you think you were the top vote-getter in our Pet Photo Contest?
Well, obviously because I’m super cute, but also because my daddy obsessed over this contest and told everyone to vote for me. He kept telling people he wanted to make me a star!
If you had a job, what would it be and why?
Um, hello! I do have a job. My daddy forces me to work at The Art Room in West Reading. He says I’m a co-owner, yet doesn’t allow me to chew on any of the paint brushes. You can catch me there daily, greeting everyone who walks through our doors. If you come visit, please bring doggy treats (daddy tries to limit me lately).

How did you and your owners meet?
My parents picked me from a listing they saw on Matchdog Rescue's website. In my previous life, I was a way-too-skinny street dog living in Northern Mexico. Matchdog Rescue saves dogs like me from Southern Texas and Mexico and brings us to the east coast to be adopted. I am so lucky I was found by them! I got to meet my new family in March of 2020 and I've been treated like a queen ever since!

Two have vision impairments, and Nod has a cardiac defect. They will all live amazing lives because their breeder did the right thing and called Brindle Buddies Rescue. The pups are a result of breeding two merle dogs together. The recessive genes caused their birth defects. They are the lucky ones. They were placed in rescue!

THE FACE OF BANKING
Jay Sidhu
Jay Sidhu has long been the face of banking in Berks—as the Chair & CEO of Customers Bancorp and previously as the Chair & CEO of Sovereign Bank. When Jay emigrated from India to pursue an MBA at Wilkes University—the only school to offer him a scholarship from the many to which he wrote—he didn’t expect to spend more than 50 years in banking. In fact, he had accepted an offer from Sylvania Electronics when two deans persuaded him to take a meeting with a gentleman named Richard Ehst. The two have been partners since.
Jay is telling this story and more in his recently published Wall Street Journal best seller, Never Ever, Ever Give Up. As a teenager, Jay hitchhiked from India through Afghanistan, the Shah’s Terran, Istanbul, Paris and on to London on a mission of international peace. These tales set-up his move to America and his rise to lead two of America’s premier banking institutions— from headquarters in Berks County.
Jay’s passion now is to share his stories with youth and young adults letting them know they can overcome challenges and adversity by setting goals and persevering. It’s a philosophy Jay learned from his father and is passing along to next generations. All proceeds from Never Ever, Ever Give Up and related speaking engagements are being contributed to scholarships and charity.

Ten years ago, if you told Sweet Ride Ice Cream owner Angie Farrell that she would one day own and operate the sweetest shop in Berks, she wouldn’t have believed you. In 2013, Angie was working as a paralegal and her husband as a teacher. They were sitting on the beach when they heard the bells of an ice cream vendor and he said, “We should get an ice cream bike!” The rest is history.
Sweet Ride serves award-winning delicious ice cream that is made on site on Penn Avenue. More than your typical ice cream parlor, the shop is designed as a 1940s-style soda fountain. The Local o
BY JON FASSNACHT
Two of summer’s most enduring pastimes are ice cream and movies. Though rarely consumed together – at least not in theaters – they share some characteristics: They’re frequently enjoyed with others, they’re often paired with dinner, and they can include a twist ending.
Whether you like yours hand-scooped or served soft, in a dish or a cone, in traditional flavors or unorthodox varieties, Berks County has an abundance of options for ice cream connoisseurs.
Pop’s MaltSHOPPE
Joel Seidel opened Pop’s Malt Shoppe because he felt Kutztown needed an ice cream shop. He wasn’t the only one who felt that way: The ’50s-themed shop celebrates 20 years in business this year. Treats are served with a side of nostalgia, including a vintage soundtrack and décor, perfect for wearing your sundae best. Initially, Pop’s menu was basic, but its options have grown along with the business. Today, it offers burgers, fries, paninis and shakes, along with its initial offerings of soft serve, sundaes, flurries and hot dogs. Active in the community, Pop’s takes pride in getting involved with events in the area.

The CHERRY ON TOP
Ann Marie Lander opened The Cherry on Top ice cream truck in the fall of 2019, six months before the world ground to a halt, melting her business model. Since customers couldn’t come to her, she went to them, spending much of 2020 doing her part to brighten the mood by bringing her treats to neighborhoods. It worked, and the outpouring of support allowed Lander to purchase a small lot on Shelbourne Road in Exeter Township at the end of the year, where she has resided ever since. Her neighborly manner remains, as she invites other food trucks to join her on the property, which features picnic tables and cornhole boards. Despite the new digs, Lander continues to hit the road, traveling to private parties and businesses.

THE GREAT AMERICAN Creamery
Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day by visiting a food establishment. Husband and wife Balasios (Saki) Lahaniatis and Lucine Sihelnik marked Valentine’s Day 2022 by opening one. The couple was spurred into action after learning how to make ice cream during a course at Penn State’s Department of Agriculture. The Great American Creamery serves products from the Penn State Berkey Creamery and other establishments in the area. Its first year of business was such a success, the owners opened a second location across the street in Santander Arena. And that wasn’t the only thing they had to celebrate: In February, former Reading City Council member Sihelnik was named to temporarily fill the vacant Berks County Commissioner position. Perhaps she marked the occasion with some ice cream?

Jenn & Jessie's ICE CREAM PARLOR
In 2005, Jeffrey and Kathy Updegrove decided to do something with the open space in front of their landscaping-supply business, now known as JKU Trucking & Landscaping Supplies. The choice to complement their business was unorthodox, but Berks Countians have complemented the owners on the decision ever since. “I think what is different about us is you can pick up mulch or stone and get a burger and a cone at the same time,” Kathy Updegrove says. Named after the couple’s daughters, Jenn & Jessie’s offers numerous varieties of Leiby’s soft-serve and hand-dipped ice cream, along with sundaes, ice cream cakes and assorted novelties. Hot food includes hot dogs, barbecue, burgers, nachos, soups, salads and homemade waffles, which can be topped with ice cream.

Sweet Ride ICE CREAM
Reading High grads Chris and Angie Farrell started Sweet Ride Ice Cream in the summer of 2014 as an ice cream bike — hence the name. The duo built a reputation catering at weddings and private parties, which led to the business adding a mobile ice cream parlor in 2015. A year later, it opened a brick-and-mortar shop along Penn Avenue in West Reading. An additional truck was added in 2018. Despite only having been in existence for less than a decade, Sweet Ride has experienced quite a bit of sweet success. It was named Best Ice Cream, Best Place to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth and Best Place for Dessert by Berks County Living, and twice won Reading Eagle's Readers Choice Award for best ice cream. The shop hosts many events throughout the year, including visits from Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

KWIK SHOPPE D riv e-In
One of the oldest ice cream establishments in the area, Kwik Shoppe was founded by Nicholas Porcaro, Sr. in 1968 and has been a family-run venture ever since. Its extensive stable of sweets includes numerous flavors of hand-dipped and soft-serve ice cream, milkshakes, gelatis, flurries, sundaes, banana splits, soda floats, ice cream cake, ice cream sandwiches and cho-chos (malted ice cream served in a Dixie cup with a wooden stick handle). Non-frozen menu options include hot dogs, burgers, beef, barbecue, fries, cheese balls, duck products (BBQ, sausage and fries, which are fried in duck fat) and Firehouse Coffee. There are also seasonal and special treats, such as peach and blueberry sundaes, pumpkin pie flurries, and the Irish Cream Dream, a St. Patrick’s Day confection that features cool-mint soft-serve ice cream layered with hot fudge and brownies and topped with whipped cream, green sprinkles and a Hershey Kiss. During the holiday season, the 12 Days of Kwikmas features discounts and giveaways, including a candy guessing contest.

Scoupe DeVille
With its wonderfully punny name referencing a classic car from yesteryear, Scoupe DeVille revels in the past. And that old-is-new-again mantra extends to its location, a remodeled service station from the 1950s. Original owners Doug and Sandy Paris opened the business in 2001, decorating the site with their extensive collection of nostalgia pieces. They sold it in 2017, and new owner Melanie West hasn’t skipped a beat. Scoupe features more than 40 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, soft serve, gelatis, banana splits, malts, ice cream sodas, sundaes, floats and shimmies (similar to Dairy Queen’s Blizzards). Hot food includes burgers, barbecue, chili dogs and crinkle-cut fries. Its most notable offering is the Fat Elvis, which features 10 scoops of ice cream, seven toppings, whipped cream, a brownie, a banana and cherries. The price tag of $50 is fitting for a venue that celebrates the ’50s, but any customer who consumes it in fewer than 30 minutes gets a gift card, a T-shirt and a picture on the wall of fame. And likely a stomachache fit for The King.

FARM MARKET & CREAMERY
Since founding a small operation about a decade ago, the owners of Plum Creek Farm Market and Creamery have had a good problem: They’ve kept outgrowing their digs. First it was a small farm on the banks of Plum Creek and a corresponding roadside wagon selling produce at the Bern Church picnic grove. The wagon was then moved up the road, and the owners — Keith and Kendra Zimmerman, and Ken and Audrey Nolt — added a creamery with ice cream, hot food and soft pretzels. After a few years, a larger facility was needed. The newly constructed Plum Creek location opened in April 2020 on the land just behind the original farm market and creamery, which were then removed. The creamery serves a variety of hot foods, ice cream treats and soft pretzels, which became so popular that Plum Creek began selling them in stores in and around southeastern Pennsylvania. Its artisanal soft-serve ice cream is created using fresh fruit, cookies and other baked goods. The site’s farm market sells produce, deli items, homemade baked goods, freezer meals, ice cream cakes and much more.

MARKET & CREAMERY
What do chickens have to do with ice cream? In the case of The Nesting Box Market & Creamery, quite a bit. In 2016, Timi and Keith Bausher launched a cage-free egg operation on their Albany Township farm. It quickly became a smashing success, so the couple decided to try their hand at another farm-based delicacy. The Nesting Box’s ice cream is handcrafted, allowing the duo to assert complete control over the flavor combinations. And they go all out. Some recent examples: pina colada, strawberry rhubarb, orange creamsicle, lemon blueberry, root beer float, pumpkin gingersnap, caramel apple streusel, pumpkin cheesecake, salted caramel chocolate pretzel and banana peanut butter fudge. Along with its farm market, the Baushers operate a mobile event trailer specializing in scoop service for weddings and festivals. They also sell their concoctions to restaurants and local parlors throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

YOGO CRAZY
The owners of YOGO Crazy caught on to a self-serve frozen yogurt concept and brought it to Berks, but added in some extra doses of fun. They explain, “The more outrageous we could think, the more fun the concept idea became – almost as if it was something out of Willy Wonka. We adopted what became the standard toppings you would find at most fro-yo stores, but that just wasn’t enough for us.” Sixteen flavors are now the standard at the sweet shop, along with 30+ toppings. New flavors pop up all the time; the music is fun, and the events and promos are, too.

WERTZ Ice Cream Cone
This iconic establishment’s name is quite literal and meta, as anyone who has seen it can attest. Employees sell soft-serve ice cream cones — and a smattering of other menu items — out of a massive soft-serve ice cream cone nestled just off Penn Avenue in Wernersville. On summer nights, the line frequently stretches out to the sidewalk. Along with a variety of soft-serve and hand-dipped flavors, “The Cone” also offers sno cones, sundaes, hot dogs, Coney Island dogs, pork barbecue, soft pretzels, nachos and its famous banana splits. Outside seating features a miniature playground for the little ones.

SWEET TREATS
Hamburg
Located in a historic building in the spine of the borough, Hamburg Sweet Treats does its part to prop up the town. The store, which sports vintage ice cream collectibles, serves Leiby’s ice cream, custom cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, ice-cream cakes and cho-chos, along with a small menu of hot foods, including Smokin Bray’s BBQ on the weekends. Owner Bee Moyer acts as a borough promotor, publicizing nearby car cruises, advertising fundraisers and hosting pictures with the Easter Bunny.

Fiore’s
CHILL & GRILL CAFE
The “Chill” in this establishment’s name has a double meaning. Plentiful indoor and outdoor seating allows customers to chill while enjoying their chilled (or grilled) treats. Hand-dipped and milkshake flavors include vanilla malt, chocolate malt, caramel, orange creamsicle, chocolate strawberry, pineapple and bananas foster. There are also plentiful varieties for sundae and granita/ smoothie lovers: sour melon face, green slime or root burpin’ melon, anyone? Burgers, fries, chicken tenders, cheesesteaks, mozzarella sticks, pierogies, jalapeno poppers, corn nuggets, onion rings, broccoli bites and wraps are among the hot options.

A Peek Inside an
E nchanted Garden in Wyomissing
BY DONNA REED | PHOTOS BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
Remember that great scene in Forrest Gump where the hapless bumper sticker promoter asks him for a slogan suggestion and Forrest promptly runs through a pile of dog poop?
The surprised salesman is taken aback when the film’s hero simply responds: “It happens.” The downon-his-luck salesman goes on to spectacular success by adding “Sh” in front of the phrase for the now iconic bumper sticker.
There is an analogous situation when it comes to Patty Belsterling’s fantastical garden in Wyomissing. This unique space came about, in part, as the result of a sewage situation just about a decade ago. It was time to replace an antiquated septic
system and connect to the sewer lines. Problems and challenges prevailed. The grassy back yard was in ruins and, from that mess, emerged a garden like no other.
“This was just a basic yard, a basic nothing,” says Patty. “I’ve really transformed it.”
The setting for the transformation was a solid one. The house which Patty and her husband, the late retired state trooper Louis “Bucky” Belsterling, bought some 50 years ago is a sturdy brick 2 ½-story foursquare built a century ago when what is now old Wyomissing was in full development mode. The house sits on a slight elevation, but the generous back yard is mostly level.
LIVING IN STYLE
60 JULY 2023 | berkscountyliving.com
A Lengthy Process
Patty’s transformation efforts started 30 years ago when the couple knocked out windows and part of a brick wall to install sliding doors off the dining room. Those doors led to a deck, configured by Patty, that spans the width of the house.
“I literally took string and made the outline of it,” she recalls.
The deck includes bench seating along half of the perimeter. There are also three separate seating areas – two with dining tables and the other with comfortable rattan chairs and a sofa –where she and her frequent guests can relax.
The garden actually starts on the deck. Containers of every ilk boast plantings, annual and perennial. Peat moss-filled balls of ivy stay green year-round.
A dominant planting is curly willow, also known as corkscrew willow due to its loose curling branch shapes, which thrives in containers and in the ground as an ornamental tree. Its origin is Chinese.
It roots easily, she explained, and its cuttings
make for interesting arrangements. And, as the former owner of the Canal Street-based Arts and Flowers and who continues a successful freelancing career in semi-retirement, she is an expert in floral staging.
Patty engaged Garden Keepers and local landscape legend Bruce Dingeldein and Garden Keepers Ltd. of Myerstown to design and construct the garden.
The result is a maze of sorts of winding paths, planting spaces and seating areas, all with nods to privacy, reflection and life itself.
Forget Formality
“I didn’t want structure,” she says. “I didn’t want everything to be perfect because life isn’t perfect. I wanted something whimsical.”
And whimsy is the result.
Throughout the garden are objects d’art. There are scores of masonry statuary from rabbits to cherubs to birds. Metal figures of birds, insects and flowers are interspersed with birdcages housing candles and other collectibles.
Among Patty’s favorite whimsical figures are praying mantises purchased at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, where her son Eric resides.
“There’s a wonderful museum gift shop and I always make sure to go there after dinner,” she says.
When it comes to the garden, some of Patty’s most memorable objects are the result of curbside “shopping.”
“You have to have an eye,” she says. “Someone else’s junk is treasure to me.”

Mirror Images
Remember her focus on reflection? The garden showcases that with perhaps a dozen mirrors placed strategically to make the area seem larger and more light-filled during the sun of day and the sparkling nighttime illumination.
Several of the more interesting mirrors, including a large ornate one missing a small border accent which is staged along the left fence wall, was salvaged from a neighbor’s set-out trash.
Her daughter Erin, who lives nearby, helped haul it to the backyard.
“I’m into recycling,” says Patty. “I like when there’s a story behind things.”
Semi-retired, she’s also into frugality and welcomes its challenges.
“Everything I do is on a shoestring,” she says.
Patty built two trellises and a stretch of fence out of salvaged wood.
A rattan sofa, chairs and table seating group in the yard was
acquired via Facebook Marketplace for $100. Two metal chairs in the grouping were a similar bargain needing only cushions to complete. A firepit anchors the setting.
On the deck immediately outside the dining room, a long narrow wood-topped side table which appears to have been custom made came from a Fleetwood Industries surplus sale. It offers space for an expansive buffet when its planters are removed. Two ornate seven-foot-plus wooden columns at either end were gifted from her friend David Reppert who salvaged them from an old house.
Large blue ceramic pots and a standing chandelier were purchased at garage sales.
Well-placed trees including the curly willow, three hollies and a Japanese maple, an occasional patio umbrella, and wisteria-
covered pergola and wooden fencing promote privacy. Shrubs, including a healthy amount of boxwood in planters and in the ground, add texture and more shades of green.
“Everywhere I sit on my deck and yard, I wanted privacy,” Patty says. “I wanted to be able to be out here in my pajamas if I feel like it.”
Even as she cherishes moments of privacy, Patty is far from being alone. Indeed, her garden is a respite and refuge and celebratory destination for friends and neighbors of all ages. The annual Wyomissing Fourth of July Parade passes in front of her house, and she opens it and her garden to scores of family and friends for pot-luck fun.
Kid-Friendly
The neighborhood kids, starting with her now teenaged grandchildren Finn and Riley, all know treats abound at the Belsterling house.
“Every day it seems the little ones will stop by and say: ‘Miss Patty, may we have some candy?’ And out comes the candy basket,” she laughs.
And there’s another fun treat for the children – a special area just for them at the right of the house.
Patty calls it a “fairy garden,” and there are all sorts of objects for imaginative play. Nearby, a large weather vane anchored by a pig stands guard.
“It’s a place for the kids to make a village, a little city,” she says.
Maintenance is, of course, an ongoing issue with such a complex garden. There is a limited amount of grass in the front yard. Annual plantings, small evergreens and three magnolia trees frame the front of the house. Gates on either side lead to the garden.
Weeding is the main point of maintenance. But even that’s a task Patty approaches philosophically.
“It’s like pulling weeds out of your life,” she says. “It so reminds me of my life, my soul, weeding out the negative things.”
Sharing her garden with great friends is one of Patty’s priorities. A friend of 40-plus years is Mary Attilli, a retired Muhlenberg
High School teacher and pretty much a woman-about-town bon vivant, who shares Patty’s love of literature and spirituality. The two, avid walkers, have traveled paths spiritual, metaphorical and physical over the years.
“We see our gardens in a symbolic way,” Mary says, noting Patty has been a gardening mentor to her for some time.
“I like when there’s a story behind things.”
Rabbits Galore
Dominant among Patty’s garden statuary are figures of rabbits.
“I have maybe 10 of them,” says Patty. “I love rabbits.”
She recalls a conversation with Mary centering on a quote from the classic John Steinbeck book Of Mice and Men
“Tell me about the rabbits, George,” says the character, Lenny.
The rabbits and caring for them represent a dream of innocence and hope, a solace almost tranquilizing, to set the character George’s mind at ease.
“We are long-standing friends and she’s always gotten a kick when I tell her stories,” says Mary. “I was like her first audible book.”
The rabbit quote is a favorite. Mary says Patty’s garden is a literary inspiration to her.
“It’s enchanted,” she says. “It brings back to me all the stories, the classic books like The Magic Garden and The Secret Garden . It’s like my own little storybook I can visit.”
Not visitors, but rather permanent residents, are Patty’s pet trio: Daisy, a pampered goldendoodle and two cats, Sweetie Pie, who took residence while pregnant (she’s now fixed) during the pandemic, and Tilly, who can’t get enough of rolling on the gravel pathways.
“They’re with me all the time and love this garden as much as I do,” she says.
“Pets are therapeutic; they help us in so many ways.”
Wildlife is also part of the scene with several birdfeeders placed in the garden. The bird songs and windchimes add to the fanciful feel. A fountain assuages avian thirst while providing soothing sounds.
Every spring, Patty seeks out some annuals to add color to her containers. She also fills a large one with varieties of lettuce and adds peppers and tomatoes to planting areas.
She seeks out low-cost suppliers. The Produce Junction in Exton is a favorite as well as a number of nearby farm stands.
Among the annuals she favors are geraniums, canas and caladiums. She will also start out some annuals with seeds in the early spring.

Everything is Illuminated
Lighting brings the garden alive at night. Though the neighborhood squirrels seem to lodge sporadic attacks on the wiring, Patty’s determination prevails and skeins of sparkling overhead lights add to the garden’s mystique. Carefully placed solar lights illuminate the paths lined with several varieties of hostas and ferns that spill past the brick borders onto the stone walkways. Stands of upside-down wine bottles and art-glass globes capture the light from both elevations, the later providing an occasional prism for even more subtle impact.
Patty says her guests frequently note she could rent out her garden for small parties, something she has yet to do. However, she is pondering hosting a dinner party as a fundraiser for a local nonprofit she supports.
She’s also considering an inventive yard sale to cull down her large collections.
“I’d like to do something fun – maybe with music and food,” she says. “I’d put price tags on things, and people could come, eat, enjoy the sounds and leave with a new treasure.”
A yard sale will not mean selling the yard. With the years of investment of family memories and hard work, Patty is staying in the home and garden she loves. And, with a glass of wine and friends at hand, she is confident in what it represents.
“This garden is kind of like life,” she says. “Some things die off, some things stay alive, some things flourish.” ◆

3 GREAT SPOTS TO GET TACOS
BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS & JANICE E. RODRÍGUE Z
COMALLI TAQUERÍA
Erik Arizmendi’s Mexican restaurant is just off 7th Street, between Penn and Reading Avenues. “I wanted to open Comalli Taquería just off the beaten path,” Arizmendi says, smiling. “In warmer months, the patio is open, so you can sit outside or indoors in a beautiful environment.”
“Seventeen tacos are our ‘set’ items,” he explains, describing their versatile menu as “small for a reason: to keep freshness and quality over everything else.” The Al Pastor (pastor = shepherd) is created with luscious, boneless pork tenderloin marinated in a traditional blend of herbs and spices, then embellished with piquant cilantro, pineapple and fine-cut onions. Flavorful, grilled corn tortillas provide the taco wrapping.
El Brulée, a Specialty Taco, is the owner’s personal fave. “It’s really unique with its combination of flavors, starting with the mole poblano — sweet and savory — a very complex sauce.” Hand-pulled chicken breast is placed over
jasmine rice, along with soft Mexican salad cheese (double crema queso fresca) and a fresh brulée of sweet banana slices. “The tortilla is a nixtamal, a different kind of corn and a different type of process so it’s more coarse and raw,” he explains. The back story: “I was probably about 8 years old. We were in Mexico, and my aunt cooked freshsliced bananas over Mexican-style rice. It was one of my first culinary memories.”
The El Gallo is created with chorizo (a ruddy and well-spiced fresh Mexican sausage) in whipped eggs, then covered with pico de gallo, avocado and cheese. This taco is served over a grilled blue-corn tortilla. “Originally, this was a dish my mom made for me for breakfast for years, which was very special to me. I took that dish and broke it down into a taco.”

Let’s Taco Bout It, owned by Ralph Jiménez, is well established on West Reading’s liveliest street. Jania, his sister, is the cheery, capable manager. Hospitality and friendliness rule at this taco spot where everything is prepared fresh daily from recipes that have been in their family for 30 years. Tacos are Mexican street-style, inspired by food trucks run by their parents, with basic corn tortillas, choices of meat, diced onions, cilantro — and their spicy homemade sauces to meet your “level of heat.”
Do try Horchata, a traditional sweet, cold and creamy rice-milk drink with a hint of cinnamon. Regular customers move steadily in and out, many greeted on a first-name basis, some picking up takeout orders, others sitting at a table, enjoying top-selling tacos like Señor Ramón (adobo-marinated pork with a hint of caramelized onion, dried chilies and spices, topped with juicy pineapple) or Carne Asada, which features madeto-order, sliced, char-grilled steak

with toppings. A rising contender is the Quesabirria Taco with a side of consommé for dipping, much like an au jus. All the divinely rich spices in that broth combine with three meats (costilla, chamorro, diezmillo — short ribs, tender beef shank and chuck) that slow-cook for eight hours to achieve total fusion, enhanced by cheese. Savory, salty, yum.
For a veggie taco explosion of citrusy, crunchy, satisfying textures — totally messy, and as much fun as the restaurant’s lucha libre (wrestling) décor, the Esqueleto (prickly pear cactus) Taco with lime is uber-healthy and incredibly delicious. Finally, a side of Street Corn is a must. This handheld, steamed corncob is slathered with crema and encrusted with Cotija cheese, pepper flakes and a sprinkling of lime zest for an unbelievably juicy treat.

TACOS, GUAC N BOWL
This restaurant may sit in a tiny corner of the city, but it’s hopping with activity. Taco choices are as simple and up-front as can be, with ingredients that you can view and choose from. The small corn tortillas themselves — which you fold and hold to make the taco — arrive on the plate in pairs, one on top of the other: the toppings are heaped in a little pile, so you can scoop and divvy half onto one tortilla and then the other for two easy-to-hold tacos.
Tacos con Chorizo makes the most of that rich, satisfying sausage — crumbled and fried to succulent nubbly goodness with delicious crispy edges — totally authentic, well-spiced but not too hot!
Add cilantro and chopped red onions, or try a typically Mexican choice of sliced radishes to enjoy deeply complex tastemixtures in otherwise straightforward food. The tiny steak chunks in Carne Asada, one of this taquería’s top sellers, leap forward when lime is drizzled atop. A zesty Taco Vegetariano takes roasted red bell peppers, zucchini and purple onions to a stunning level. Bright-red Hibiscus Drink delivers cool swallows with hot food. Lastly, bring home some guacamole. It’s off-the-charts fabulous
