When 110 athletes compete in the Winter Olympic Games, they need more than their passports. CHS Expo Freight’s Heikki Mattola, a veteran of four Olympic Games, makes sure the Finnish Olympic Team is well equipped to compete by shipping its equipment to exactly the right place at the right time.
The major part of the Finnish Olympic Team’s freight, which this time consisted of two sea containers, was shipped to Korea at the end of last November.
Of two containers the first carried maintenance equipment for ski jumping, Nordic combined, biathlon and cross-country skiing. For example, a grinding machine for fine-tuning the athletes’ skis to make them ready for competition travelled in this container. The second container included goods intended to make the athletes more comfortable, such as 20 bicycles to transport them from one destination to another within the huge Olympic village complex,” the Finnish Olympic Committee’s Executive Business Manager Ville Köngäs describes.
Among the goods shipped for the Olympic villages there were, for example, 60 packages of Finnish coffee, 900 portions of porridge, 3,000 energy bars, 200 mugs, and 150 posters for the decoration of the Olympic villages. In addition to these, there were 400-450 suitcases, as well as ski bags and hockey bags.
The sea containers were, at the turn of the year, on the East China Sea and they arrived in the Busan port on 12th January 2018. After
customs clearance procedures, the goods travelled to the scenes of the Winter Olympics, where they were available for use at the right time on schedule – just when they were needed. The final shipments to the Winter Olympics left Finland as air cargo from the Helsinki Airport by Finnair on Friday 19th January 2018.
“CHS is pleased to have been involved in creating possibilities for the Finnish Olympic athletes. Our cooperation with the Finnish Olympic Committee has been fruitful and smooth during the entire Olympic project and it has been a joy to work with these professionals,” Heikki Mattola, director for event logistics at CHS, comments. At the moment, he is responsible for the logistics of his fifth lympic Games.
Timetable for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympics were held in PyeongChang, South Korea, February 9 th 25th, 2018.
During 17 days, teams participated in 15 different winter sports disciplines, encompassing 102 competitive events. The Finnish athletes won in PyeongChang six medals: one gold, one silver, and four bronze medals.

DHL TRADE FAIRS & EVENTS IS NOW THE OFFICIAL LOGISTICS PARTNER OF STATION
BERLIN, GERMANY
In the last IELA Report, DHL Trade Fairs & Events mbH introduced the new office in Berlin. Now, we are happy to announce our cooperation with STATION Berlin starting from January 2018.
DHL is able to provide all logistics services for all shows and events taking place in and around the venue. The Expo! Expo! show hall featured 274 exhibitors in more than 3.600 net square meters of sold exhibit space and attracted more than 2,000 attendees representing 21 countries. 14 IELA}}REPORT86 IT’S ALL ABOUT POST OPERATIONS SUMMITOS POST 2nd IELA OPERATIONS SUMMIT February 1st • 3rd, 2018, Hong Kong OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
LEARN, SHOWCASE AND NETWORK –EMPOWERING IELA MEMBERS’ OPERATIONAL STAFF
The second IELA Operations Summit was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from February 1st until 3rd 2018.
The IELA Operations Summit is our event for operations managers to strengthen cooperation and improve the industry’s performance. We hope all the participants received great value from these three intense days.
Based on three pillars: LEARN, SHOWCASE and NETWORK, the IELA Operations Summit is a strong platform to provide specific training and to activate the IELA network.
LEARN
According to the theme, “Operational Excellence,” IELA offered a fully funded event to 61 delegates representing 53 IELA members from 27 countries. It provided 10 engaging lectures presented by IELA experts from all over the world. In addition, Konstantin Stathopoulos, Head of Sales & Handling South China, Hong Kong & Taiwan of Lufthansa Cargo AG, offered valuable insights on airline operations and Ian Hume, Director Department Event Technology & Logistics at Messe Düsseldorf, discussed the logistics requirements of exhibition centres and their solutions.
Several open sessions engaged the conference participants: the Podium Discussion and Stump the Experts. Both were relevant and dynamic sessions during which the delegates steered the conversation toward their most urgent needs and preoccupations.
Another highlight of the Operations Summit was a guided tour through the HKCEC with a close inspection of the logistical environment. The focus of the tour was on traffic regulation, specifically how to prioritise trucks arriving to the multi-story building through planning and hydraulic-container lifts.
SHOWCASE
The event flourished in a business atmosphere in which all delegates could showcase their companies by participating in the IELA Operations Summit Poster Exhibition. We were all delighted to see the lounge area converted into the IELA family billboard where delegates and experts could chat about their businesses over a cup of coffee.
NETWORK
The well-known IELA 1-2-1 networking sessions offered the delegates a variety of fruitful meetings and discussions about their operations experience. It is an important opportunity for participants to develop their networks, as well as streamline customer service by improving collaboration within the IELA membership.
Even though the Summit took place during a peak time for exhibitions, our robust attendance demonstrated the value of this platform for acquiring a high level of knowledge and having myriad opportunities for face-to-face discussions with other event and exhibition logistics professionals.
We are already looking forward to planning the next edition in 2020!
In the meantime, keep reading and you will find much more information about our event: details about the programme, speaker interviews, delegate testimonials and also the Making of the Summit by Achim Lotzwick.

Emmanuel Pitchelu (E.S.I. Expo Services International), delivered an introduction to IELA.
OPERATIONS FIRST
Philipp Woll , BTG EXPO GmbH, provided an indepth presentation on why customs clearance in Russia is so complicated and how to declare shipments correctly.
We asked Philipp about the specific differences between Russia and other countries when it comes to freight forwarding, and here is his answer:
Custo s clearance in Russia is very demanding and very problematic for a lot of people wor ing in Russia especially for the first ti e.
It is i portant to understand that 30% of the federal budget of Russia co es fro Customs duties and taxes on imports. This makes it easy to understand why they put such a big emphasis on it.
The way to deal with it is to be very precise when it
comes to documentation. Make sure you have all the typical licenses and certificates when you are sending cargo to Russia. e well prepared. Russia is really unforgi ing so last minute changes to either your invoices or the routing of your cargo will almost certainly result in complications, delays and/ or additional costs. e well prepared and make sure that your documents are spot on. Other than that, just do what you do best, exhibition forwarding. Handling onsite, on the other hand, is quite similar to a lot of countries in the world. Don’t expect to get a time slot to unload your truc . Russia is not yet that far. General operations loading unloading and dismantling is up to par, like anywhere else in the world,“ Philipp said.
Vicki Bedi, (PS Bedi Group), presented on how to shift power to become a leader and enable oneself and colleagues to improve.
“The qualities that make a good leader are the constant desire to learn and the ability to have a vision and explain that vision to the rest of the team,” explained Vicki Bedi.
“The programme of the IELA Operations Summit 2018 has been developed to focus 100% on Operations so we can train and make sure our members are good informed and they learn from experts. Of course networking is important, but we want them to leave Hong Kong with their suitcases full of information so when they get back to their companies and professional lives, they can be better freight forwarders. And that is our commitment to our membership and everybody who attended the event.” Mariane Ewbank, Live during OS18.
Konstantin Stathopoulos, Head of Sales & Handling South China of Lufthansa Cargo AG discussed airline operations.

“On-site planning is really relying on organisers and close communication is the ey. It is their facility and they do the basic ti ing (brea up ti es etc.) and you ha e to be really close to your exhibitors to know what their needs are and follow the schedule,” Erkki commented.

Tania Khodayar, Transit Air Cargo, Inc., talked about the future of the industry. Tania focused on the generational shift occurring as Baby Boomers and ambitious Millennials occupy the same workplace. We asked her why working onsite is attractive for young workers who would like a career in exhibition Logistics?
Nowadays young professionals do not li e to sit in an office ob with the sa e daily routine. They li e to brea things up. y being onsite in our industry they get to tra el and it is a huge benefit. They get to see new countries eet new people. This industry re uires planning. It s how we deli er efficiency. They en oy planning. The on site ob in ol es proble sol ing so it is challenging for them. When you work with the general contractor and the doc guys you are building relationships with the . It is also fun to see the end result and meet the customers. The on-site responsibility gives young workers diversity in the day-to-day job,” Tania explained.

KEYNOTES INTERVIEWS
Ian Hume
IELA: What contribution can the Exhibition Logistics Industry make to the success of a show?
IAN: The Exhibition Logistics industry has a big role to play. If there are no exhibits and no stand construction materials, there is no show. But also, making an excellent exhibition logistics service available can help convince exhibitors to participate in shows anywhere in the world, and that is why exhibition logistics companies are important contributors to the success of a show.
IELA: How does modern navigation technology influence exhibition centres?
IAN: We all have the opinion that modernnavigation technology helps us to do things easier, but I do not think it does. Sometimes it has a negative influence. Nobody looks at signs anymore. Everybody listens to the little voice telling them to turn right at the next intersection, and you can miss the destination even though you pass four signs telling you where to go. I think information technology in itself is very important. For example, a truck driver can use mobile-navigation technology to determine what routes to take and that is going to be even more important in the future, but people still have to read signs and at the moment they don’t.
Konstantin Stathopoulos
IELA: How do you think digitalization will affect the exhibition cargo volume in the next years?
KONSTANTIN: I think that digitalisation is a very important topic for every industry and every part of the air cargo industry and especially for exhibition goods, which are often times critical and need a very good quality and dependable transport plan. I think digitalisation can help the exhibition logistics industry very much. Missing documents or the late arrival of documents will not happen anymore if we have document digitalisation
I also believe the exchange of data—knowing where goods have to be and when they have to be there, as well as the available transport modes—will be an advantage for emergency exhibition logistics and express parcels.
IELA: Safety & Security and, unfortunately, protection from terrorism has become our day-to-day reality. How does Lufthansa Cargo manage this sensitive topic without a major impact on operations?
KONSTANTIN: Safety and Security is one of the top priorities if not “The” top priority we have as an air carrier, and as we look at the development and continuation of different threats in our industry, we need to ensure that we are safe and sound in everything we do. We work very closely with governments and with other members of the industry when we design processes and define our business procedures Safety and security is always on top of what we plan. We always try to lead in the industry, and try to be a step ahead of everybody else in order to make sure we have safe cargo and that security keeps out every risk that can be kept out.
IELA: Which challenges might impact exhibition cargo in the near future?
KONSTANTIN: I think exhibition logistics has challenges similar to ours. Digitalisation, more digitised processes and data exchange, is one challenge, but also I think new technologies like 3D printing for example, could possibly impact the delivery of goods that are needed at a certain place in the future. Although the different modes of transport are becoming more efficient, faster and integrated, bringing more benefit to the logistic industry, the future is definitely unclear as technologies are developing so fast. t

Philipp Woll
IELA: Dear Philipp, it was the first time you gave a speech at an IELA event and the feedback from the participants was enthusiastically positive. How was the experience from your side?
PHILIPP: Speaking at the IELA OS 2018 was a great experience for me and I really would like to thank the entire IELA team for organising this important event in the first place. In retrospect, working on my presentation not only gave me the chance to reflect on our own business and the framework in which we operate, but also gave me the opportunity to discuss a variety of hands-on topics with a room full of peers during and after the actual presentation. Last but not least, it feels good to be an active part of our professional community and I can only encourage all future speakers to take the chance to contribute to the advancement of our industry.
IELA: Your presentation about the Russian market, its complexity, and your private tips have captivated the audience’s thirst for knowledge! We know it is impossible to summarize in a few sentences, but what would be your main tips for a successful temporary import into Russia?
PHILIPP: My main tip for any kind of work in Russia would probably be to keep cultural differences in mind. Don’t presume to understand Russia just because you have worked in similar markets. From a more pragmatic point of view, I think it is noteworthy that customs duties and taxes on imports currently make up approximately 30% of Russia’s Federal Budget. The Russian customs regulations are therefore extremely strict and ruthlessly enforced. The best way to deal with this challenge is to avoid last-minute shipments as much as possible and to instead prepare each
and every shipment meticulously. Make sure that you provide your on-site agent with very detailed cargo specifications and descriptions of every item that you are trying to import. Since the correct HS classifications in Russia can vary from other countries, it is very important for your on-site agent to really understand the nature of your cargo. Pictures are always a great help!
Also keep in mind that lots of products require additional permits and licenses, even for temporary importation. And finally, don’t dispatch any shipments without prior approval of all transport and customs documents through your on-site agent. It is really important that these documents are not only correct but also consistent.
IELA: And specifically regarding shipments for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, are there any specific regulations freight forwarders have to know about?
PHILIPP: Fortunately, there actually is a special customs procedure in place for the upcoming World Cup, which not only reduces the licensing/permit requirements for many product groups (such as broadcasting equipment), but also grants exemptions from customs duties and taxes for certain permanent imports.
However, please note that while all FIFA and FIFA-related entities are generally eligible for this procedure, these entities must actively register both themselves as well as their customs broker of choice with the Russian customs authorities. This process in itself can easily take up to four weeks and you should therefore contact your on-site partner of choice as early as possible in order to make the necessary arrangements. t

The making of the
2nd IELA Operations Summit Hong Kong
February 1-3, 2018
A lot has been said about the character, purpose and shape of the IELA Operations Summit. This article takes you behind the scenes to give you an idea of how IELA works for you.
It’s February 6th, three days after the conclusion of the IELA Operations Summit (OS), and today I know everybody returned home safely.
What happened in the 12 months since we launched the project? “We” is the dedicated team of IELA Board of Management (BOM) members, the Secretariat, devoted IELA volunteers, guest speakers and IELA member companies that supported the Operations Summit by being sponsors or sending delegates.
We entered the true preparation stage after the successful IELA Winter Seminar in Zurich. The Operations Summit was my favorite subject from day one, and the IELA Board of Management was kind enough to task me with connecting all the players to make the project happen. Frankly, even with the experience of having organised a few IELA Winter Seminars, I felt I was in an entirely different league.
It was a great honor to lead a dedicated team during the 12 months of planning for the Summit. Amongst them, seasoned experts who had delivered a Winter Seminar and those from the Secretariat who had experience from the first IELA OS under their belts and dazzled us all with the expertise of a professional event team.
IELA has a policy of listening to its members. From feedback on the previous OS, we realized that this event should have much more focus on operational issues than the first OS had. Thus, presentations on “Airline Operations” by Lufthansa Cargo AG and “Logistics” by Messe Düsseldorf replaced “The Organiser, their role and interface,” The Chinese and Hong Kong Market –size and importance” and “An overview of the European Exhibition Industry.”
We thought to keep subjects that had been well received at OS 2016, and spoke to IELA Members about ideas for new topics.
It was a particular joy to have individuals from IELA member companies— those who had sacrificed time and expense for travel—speak to our delegates. My personal thanks goes to Emmanuel Pitchelu, Mariane Ewbank, Daniel Mithran, Vicki Bedi, Philipp Woll, Guido Fornelli, Jim Kelty, Erkki Koski and Tania Khodayar.
And it was also a pleasure to see our guest speakers, Konstantin Stathopoulus of Lufthansa Cargo AG and Ian Hume of Messe Düsseldorf, not just picking a standard presentation off the shelf. We were able to introduce them to our thoughts about what content would be most beneficial for our delegates, and they went out of their way to deliver exactly what we were hoping for.
While volunteers from the IELA Organising Team were busy assembling quality presentations and speakers, the Secretariat moved with full steam to build the mechanics around the OS. They created a working paper called Matrix.OS.Secretariat, which grew bigger day by day. I’m an amateur and watched in awe the agility, professionalism and efficiency with which the Secretariat maneuvered around all obstacles to organise every single aspect and do away with any possible hurdles.

Why USA? Why California? Welcome!
We
so honored to invite and welcome

Event
the 2018 IELA Congress &
San Francisco.
The very first time IELA was in our city, it was 1988. This was the very early foundations of IELA and our founders were so instrumental in creating the IELA that we have today to enjoy and celebrate.
We all know that the choice of city and country in which to have an IELA event rotates between Europe and other continents. Choosing the US, and specifically San Francisco, has a lot of meaning as our city’s history embodies the journey that IELA itself and many of us in our own businesses have experienced.
San Francisco’s earliest immigrants were the Europeans, mainly the Spanish, and the name of the first pre-city settlements here was called Yerba Buena. Originally part of the Spanish empire, then part of Mexico, San Francisco became a part of the United States in 1848. In 1849, we had the California Gold Rush, which led to massive immigration and the city’s population grew rapidly from 1,000 to over 25,000. This included many workers from China. Our famous cable cars were built in the late 1890s and in 1906, San Francisco experienced the Great Earthquake and Fire that devastated 80% of the city. After the fire, the city rebuilt itself. After the huge 2001 US Stock Market Crash, the city had a mass exodus of companies and residents, however, again, the city rebuilt itself. Throughout our history, San Francisco has been a mecca for cultural and lifestyle diversity, a capital for high-tech companies and a city that constantly reinvents itself. Today, our population is estimated to be over 850,000 in the city itself and if you look at the surrounding areas, the metropolitan area population is about 4.6 million.
With IELA coming to San Francisco, I cannot think of a better city that represents the best of IELA. As stated, our founder first came to San Francisco over 30 years ago and at this time, IELA was very small, less than 30 members overall. Like the fantastic growth of San Francisco, IELA, our association, has grown significantly to over 190 partners worldwide. We are an association with financial strength and we continue to grow and position the Summit as the event to attend yearly! In our own businesses, just like San Francisco’s history, we often experience the highs—great years, large shows and large numbers of shipments. We also have seen and journeyed through the lows— shows are cancelled, industry and technology changes cause entire exhibitions to disappear. Throughout all this, we also have seen new opportunities and new shows created. Many of us have had to rebuild our business model, shift to new industries and grow. IELA itself as an association has changed from a Swiss-based business to an actual association. We have now the best association management and we are adapting to the latest requirements of our members and exceeding their expectations. As San Francisco has prospered throughout its history, so has IELA and so have our own businesses. I cannot see a better place than San Francisco for all IELA members and all industry professionals to come together.
Ready to learn about shows in the USA? Ready to learn about what business opportunities are available to you? How can you grow your business? How can you meet the right future partners? The answer is to join us at IELA 2018 in San Francisco! Live, Learn and Luminate in this great association and in this great City. Welcome and join us in San Francisco. t

Let’s Bridge the World, Drive Growth and Boost Action together in San Francisco
In a few short months, we will come together in San Francisco –one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world—to join forces in making our industry the best it can be. As an organisation, IELA sets the bar at the highest level and expects our members (and potential members) to participate by bringing their unique experiences and point of view “to the party.” This is how we will be Bridging the World. Although we operate as separate entities to obtain business for our companies most of the year, our goal with IELA is to ensure that, as an organisation, we are the gold standard for shipping & logistics. This annual coming together is critical in working toward this goal.
The Partnering Event is a wonderful opportunity not only to espouse the benefits of becoming an IELA member, but also to look at working on new and different projects. Compare experiences working for different industrial sectors, be it auto, aerospace, cosmetics or packaging. Talk about how the changing world and political climate affects us and how we can still continue to thrive in this industry and overcome the obstacles facing us. This is how we will Drive Growth.
When we do all come together in the magnificent “City by the Bay,” let us explore the ways we can best serve the industry by looking at the areas which need the most focus, for example, safety & security concerns are always a top priority and as an organisation it is critical that we do the utmost to take care of our customers (and ourselves). And what about bringing in the Millennials (something the Working Group I am part of is currently addressing)? So much to contemplate. But what do YOU think? What are your specific concerns & goals for IELA? How can we best Boost Action when we see each other in a few short months? Think about it! t

Spirit lives in San Francisco
Tony Bennett famously explained how he left his heart in San Francisco. He gives a few solid reasons why—the fog, the cable cars, being high on a hill. But there are so many more reasons why people love this city.
Francisco by grabbing a bite at the Ferry Building Marketplace or visiting the vibrant Castro district. And whether it’s climbing to the top of Twin Peaks or strolling through Golden Gate Park, active types and nature lovers will find plenty to love about San Francisco.
Museums
San Francisco is famous for being a hotbed of innovation. Technology and its effects can be found throughout the city, from strolling South Park where Twitter was created to a tour of the art scene around town. Here are just a few ways to absorb that legendary creativity while you are in the city. I hope our friends and partners from IELA will be inspired by their visit.
The “usual” stuff
San Francisco may only stretch across 11 kilometers, but it’s packed with an assortment of activities sure to please connoisseurs of the outdoors, food, and curious wanderers of all ages. The Golden Gate Bridge is a must-see, while a visit to Alcatraz Island to tour the infamous, and now closed, federal prison should also be high on your list. Visit the authentic side of San
Innovation abounds in San Francisco, with opportunities to learn about modern conservation and research efforts at the Aquarium of the Bay and California Academy of Sciences, and through modern art at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). But the real playground of creativity may be at the Exploratorium, regarded as the world’s foremost interactive science museum. With more than 650 hands-on exhibits that ignite curiosity, the Exploratorium transforms the way people learn. Visitors of all ages can play, observe, and discover in this scientific fun-house and experimental laboratory.
The Autodesk Gallery highlights design that shapes the world. With more than 20 exhibits from the likes of Lego, Mercedes-Benz and Nike, the gallery celebrates how people are using technology to push imagination and design.
The “unusual” stuff
Tucked into Presidio Park, a former military base turned into national park at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Letterman Digital and New Media Arts Center houses the offices of Lucasfilm. There’s no better example of innovative technology makers in entertainment than this place! While the offices are private, you can wander throughout the campus grounds within the national park and take a picture of Yoda on top of the fountain at the main entrance.
If you are really interested in the tech culture of the city, the Silicon Valley Innovation Center offers visits to startup company locations in the Peninsula and Silicon Valley. Options include a one-day Tech Startup Tour or one-day Legends Tour. Depending on your choice, activities can include a visit to the Stanford University campus, a walk around Google’s headquarter offices, Android Garden and Googelplex, or a stop by NASA’s Ames Research Center and Apple’s headquarters. During the tour you will hear insider stories about Silicon Valley culture.
So, come and enjoy the City by the Bay. I am personally very excited to welcome our friends and partners from IELA to this amazing city! It’s going to be a Congress for the record books! t

Currency: INR India is a great mixture of cultures, faiths, and colors. India is the biggest and most ancient experiment in which almost all racial and ethnic groups of the world have met and mixed.
Indian Society and their Values FAMILY
uncommon for an Indian to approach a foreigner on the street and invite him or her to a village festival or a wedding party. Sometimes, poor families offer extraordinary meals. Offers of money are inevitably turned down and regarded as an insult.
UNITY IN DIVERSITY
Geographical Unity: India has always been an uninterrupted geographical entity. Thus goes the popular saying, “from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, India is one.” The concept of ”Bharatmata,” the national song “Vande Mataram,” and national anthem “Jana-gana-mana” clearly project India as one geographical unit.
In India, the family is the most important institution to have survived through the ages. India, like most other less industrialized, traditional, eastern societies is a collectivist society that emphasizes family integrity, family loyalty and family unity. A joint family includes kinsmen and three to four generations, including uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and grandparents living together in the same household. It is a group composed of a number of family units living in separate rooms of the same house. Family members eat the food cooked at one hearth and share common income and property. They are related to one another through family ties, and worship the same idols. The joint family has always been the preferred family type in the Indian culture, and most Indians at some point in their lives have participated in joint-family living. However, the practice of joint-family living is being reconsidered by some younger Indians who prefer to live independently.
THE PEOPLE
The people in India are friendly and helpful. Indians like to talk, gossip, engage in animated discussions, indulge in conspiracies and watch soap-opera dramas. Part of this may be related to their tradition of having an oral culture.
Long before many things were written down, stories and information were passed along orally from generation to generation. Great importance is placed on friendship. Making casual friends in India is very easy. A special effort is made to make foreigners feel welcome. Tourists who venture outside the cocoon of organised tours find they are overwhelmed with invitations for tea, food or a visit to a person’s home. It is not
Political Unity: Political unity has its origin in the country’s long past. Even after the British conquest of India, political unity was maintained with a uniform pattern of law, penal code, administrative works, etc. everywhere inside the country. The concepts of “Dandasamata” (uniformity of the penal code) and “vyavahara samata” (uniformity in judicial procedures) invoked by Asoka became the ideal for all the rulers of India. No Mughal rule, British rule or the present democracy in India have escaped it. Thus politically, India remained one, remains one and will remain one in the future.
Religious Unity:
Diverse religions found their way into the Indian subcontinent. Spiritualism is the most essential part of an Indian’s life. Many sects and creeds have gained momentum. Everybody pays respect to Ramayana, Mahabharata and other scriptures anywhere and everywhere in the country. The holy places in India are adored by everybody. Everybody takes pride in chanting such place names ignoring the differences of regions. For this religious unity, India is famous in the world.
Cultural Unity:
In spite of differences in language, religion, dress and manners, Indian culture is homogeneous. Many festivals like Holi, Diwali, Dushhera, Rakshabandhan, Idd, Christmas and Good Friday are observed throughout the country with their colourful palettes. The caste system, family sanctity, modes of offerings, and several social ceremonies are practiced similarly in different parts of the country.
Linguistic Unity:
Although sixteen or more languages and numerous dialects exist in India, Hindi is widely spoken. English is used more or less for carrying on official correspondence.

MEETING AND GREETING
Westerners may shake hands, however, greeting with “namaste” (placing both hands together with a slight bow) is appreciated and shows respect for Indian customs (for example, when entering a hotel lobby or restaurant).
NAMES AND TITLES
The most common honorifics in India are usually placed immediately before the name of the subject. Honorifics, which can be used for any adult, include “Sri“ (also written as Shri), “Smt“ and “Kum.“ For informal talking or conversation between individuals of the same age or with subordinates, first names are used. In e mails, sometimes the recipient is referred to as Mr. /Ms. / Mrs. and the second name or last name is used.
BODY LANGUAGE
• Public displays of affection are not appropriate.
• Indians generally allow an arm’s length space between themselves and others. Indians value personal space.
• Indian men may engage in friendly back patting merely as a sign of friendship.
• When an Indian smiles and jerks his/her head backward -- a gesture that looks somewhat like a Western “no” -- or moves his head in a figure , this means yes.
• The Western side-to-side hand wave for “hello” is frequently interpreted by Indians as “no” or “go away.”
• Only the right hand is used to touch someone, pass money or pick up merchandise. The left hand is considered unclean.
• The head is considered sensitive and should not be touched.
• Feet are sacred for holy men and women. Pointing footwear at people is considered an insult.
• Indians are very sensitive to being beckoned rudely. A hand and arm waved up and down (Western “good-bye”) means “come here.” Indians beckon by extending the arm palm down, and making a scratching motion with fingers kept together.
• ointing with a single finger or two fingers is considered rude.
• Pointing can be with the chin, whole hand or thumb. The chin is not used to point at superiors.
CORPORATE CULTURE
• In India, one is likely to encounter two types of companies. The first is a traditional, family-run business. The second is a more modern, hi-tech operation that applies Western business methodology.
• ecisions are strongly influenced from the top. Usually one person makes all major decisions. It is advisable to attempt to deal with the most senior-level person available.
• It is considered rude to plunge into business discussions immediately. It is preferable to ask about the counterpart’s family, interests, hobbies, etc. before beginning business discussions.
• Offering a sugary, milky tea, coffee or a soft drink is common in India. The glass or cup may be refilled as soon as it is emptied.
• Indians do not generally touch one another as part of communication.
• Business cards are exchanged and Indians are very conscious of the protocol. English is appropriate for business cards.
DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT
• Initial business entertainment is done in restaurants in prestigious hotels. Business can be discussed during meals. Hosts should initiate business conversation.
• An Indian may feel offended if an invitation to visit his home or come to dinner is flatly denied by the business counterpart.
• Spouses are often included in social/business functions.
• Strict orthodox Muslims don’t drink any alcohol. Most Hindus, especially women, do not consume alcohol. Arriving 15-30 minutes later than the stated time for a dinner party is expected.
• At a social gathering, a garland of flowers is often placed around a guest’s neck. After a few minutes, it should be removed and carried in the guest’s hands to show humility.
• It is polite to allow hosts to serve guests. Refusing food is impolite, and guests shouldn’t feel obligated to empty their plates. Hindu hosts are never supposed to let their guests’ plates go empty.
• If a host eats with his hands, guests should do the same. When utensils are not used, a guest should use his right hand and first three fingers and thumb only to eat.
• Guests should take food from a communal dish with a spoon, never with their fingers. happati or poori bread torn into small chunks can be used to scoop up food.
• The host pays for guests in a restaurant.
• Guests give gifts to the host and the host’s children as a “thank you.”
• Guests should reciprocate invitations to a meal with a meal of comparable value. Inviting someone to a far more lavish dinner may embarrass him or her.
DRESS
• For business, men wear suits and ties. During summer months, jackets can be omitted.
• Women wear conservative pantsuits or dresses.
GIFTS
• Gifts are given with both hands. Gifts are not normally opened in the presence of the giver.
• Gifts from the giver’s country are appreciated (perfume, chocolates, small china or crystal objects).
• ifts are not normally e pected at the first meeting. ifts may be given once a relationship develops.
• Never give leather as a gift to Hindus, as many are vegetarians and will consider the skin of a dead animal to be offensive.
HELPFUL HINTS
• When an Indian answers, “I will try,” he or she generally means “no.” This is considered as a polite “no”.
• Many Indians do not wear shoes inside a home. Guests should follow the lead of the host and also make sure socks are clean and do not have holes.
• It is polite to apologize immediately if feet or shoes touch another person.
• Permission should be requested before smoking. It is considered rude to smoke in the presence of elders.
• Showing anger is impolite. t

GROWTH OF INDIA EXHIBITION INDUSTRY IN THE LAST FOUR DECADES
As a kid, I visited the first international exhibition held in New Delhi in 1959. In the four decades since then, the importance of exhibitions has grown exponentially.
Since 1992, when the globalisation process set in, growth of the Indian exhibition Industry has been almost vertical. Exhibitions have been recognized not only as a way to showcase exhibitors, but also as an effective marketing tool for an industry.
Recognising this potential in exhibitions, government organisers like India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and many national trade associations are now organising exhibitions on specialised subjects. Many International brands of organisers from Germany, UK, USA, Singapore, China, Japan and other countries are also organising exhibitions in India.
As a large country, India’s need for exhibition growth outside the capital New Delhi and
financial capital umbai has been answered with exhibition centers opening in all major cities from North to South and West to East. Exhibition centers have been built in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Gandhinagar, and Coimbatore.
This growth in the exhibition industry brings logistics challenges. While there has been a considerable change in infrastructure and regulations on exhibition promotion over the last four decades, we still have a long way to go to simplify regulations and achieve a suitable infrastructure at all exhibition centers.
With the economy growing at a rate exceeding 7% and the Government of India’s Made in India campaign, substantial growth in investment is expected. This in turn will open up more opportunities for showcasing highend technical products at exhibitions in India.
The exhibition industry in India has the space and potential to grow. From one international exhibition in 1959, we now have over 300 international exhibitions held in India. They range in size and cover a variety of industries. Some have become well known brands in this part of the world. Consumer-related events have also gained a presence.
The simplification of regulations and investments in infrastructure, as well as the expansion, modernization and creation of new facilities will enhance opportunities for the growth of the exhibition industry in India in the coming years. t

CEIR 2017 FOURTH QUARTER INDEX RESULTS HAVE BEEN RELEASED
CEIR, the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, published the results of its quarterly index in which it reveals that growth of the exhibition industry resumed during the fourth quarter of 2017 after a temporary setback in the third quarter.
The performance of the industry, as measured by the CEIR Total Index, posted a strong year-on-year gain of 3.1% (see Figure 1).
CEIR’s index also revealed that despite displaying somewhat greater volatility, exhibitions are keeping pace with the macroeceonomy and all exhibition metrics in the fourth quarter posted positive year-on-year gains.
“The increase in the fourth quarter supports our prediction that economic fundamentals still point to moderate growth for the exhibition industry,” said CEIR Economist Allen Shaw, Ph.D., Chief Economist for Global Economic Consulting Associates, Inc.
Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services; Industrial/Heavy Machinery and Finished Business Inputs; and Building, Construction, Home and Repair sectors all registered robust year-on-year gains. In contrast, Consumer Goods and Retail Trade; Government; and Raw Materials and Science sectors posted year-on-year declines.
“When looking at the quarterly results for real revenue, one has to keep in mind perspective,” said CEIR CEO Cathy Breden, CAE, CMP. “During the Great Recession, real revenue suffered the biggest decline among four metrics. The big fall naturally leads to a big rebound. As such, real revenue has experienced the largest recovery during the past seven years. Nonetheless, real revenue in 2017 – $10.29 billion – was still 3% below the peak in 2007. In addition, revenue per NSF in 2017 was still below the 2007 level.” t
CEIR 2017 HOW THE EXHIBIT DOLLAR IS SPENT
Last November, CEIR (Center for Exhibition Industry Research) released an updated version of its popular report, “How the Exhibit Dollar is Spent,” originally published in 2014.
This report estimates that in 2017, exhibitors direct spending rose to $25.3 billion in nominal dollars. It informs readers how these expenditures break down and identifies where spending has remained constant – versus increasing – compared to 2016 levels.
According to the report, in 2017, exhibitors spent 8.9% of their exhibiting budget on shipping/transport of exhibit materials.
Among the largest spending increases, shipping/transport was fourth with an +18% increase, just after exhibit space (+27%), exhibit design, production, and refurbishing (+24%) and show services (+19%).
CEIR CEO Cathy Breden, CMP, CAE says of the report, “It is a resource that helps exhibitors benchmark their spending allocations to industry norms and helps organisers and suppliers understand how much of exhibitor spending they are capturing.”
Online survey results are based on a study conducted by CEIR this summer, polling a sampling of exhibitors from lists provided by Fern, Freeman, GES, Hargrove and Shepard Exposition Services. A total of 424 exhibitors responded. t

UFI 20TH GLOBAL BAROMETER
The Global Barometer survey has been measuring the pulse of the exhibition industry since 2008. The 20th survey, concluded in January 2018, was answered by 290 companies from 53 countries. The results are detailed for 17 geographical zones, including 14 major national markets.
Survey results reveal some positive trends:
• UFI’s Global Barometer shows that 44% of companies in the exhibition industry increased their operating profit in 2017 and more than 70% of companies anticipate revenue growth for 2018.
• The importance of the economy in home markets continues to increase as the focus on global economic developments declines further.
• The majority of companies surveyed expect to generate up to 10% of their revenue from new business models within 5 years.
• 38% of companies plan to develop operations in at least one additional country.
Regarding turnover, 70% of companies around the world declared an increase in the 2nd half of 2017: 72% anticipate one for the first half of 2018 and 77% for the 2nd half of 2018. Several markets anticipate outperforming these scores for 2018, such as Brazil, Germany, Macau, the US and the UK, whereas a significant level of uncertainty exists for most other countries in Asia, including China.
In terms of operating profit, most markets maintained or improved a good level of performance in 2017: 44% declare an increase and 43% a stable profit. A majority of companies declared an increase in their operating profit in 2017 in 9 of the markets analysed, including Brazil, China, Germany, Indonesia, Macau, Mexico, the Middle East, UK and the US.
When asked about the revenue share expected from new business models (such as different event formats, digital revenues, or other marketing services), a majority of respondents believe that they will represent less than 10% in 5 years’ time, but more than 10% in 10 years’ time. A higher share is expected in the following markets: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Macau, Mexico, Thailand, the UK and the US.
According to UFI’s Barometer, the most important issue for exhibition providers is the state of the economy in the home market (70%), followed by competition from within the industry (66%), internal challenges (56%), and global economic developments (36%).
Finally, about their current strategic priorities, companies indicate that:
• In terms of the range of activities, a large majority of companies intend to develop new activities in either the classic range of exhibition industry activities (venue/ organiser/services), live events, virtual events or both live and virtual events. 72% in the Middle East & Africa, 78% in Asia/Pacific and 88% in the Americas and Europe affirmed these priorities.
• In terms of strategic priorities related to geographic exposure, 4 companies out of 10 on average declare an intention to develop operations in new countries, and this is the case for a majority of companies in 5 of the 17 markets analysed, such as the UK and the Middle East (each at 67%), China (57%), India (53%) and Germany (50%). Regarding strategic priorities by type of activity, service providers report being more aggressive in plans to explore business opportunities in new countries (44%) compared to organisers (39%).

UFI WORLD MAP OF EXHIBITION VENUES
With its World Map of Exhibition Venues, UFI regularly produces a global census of all exhibition venues with a minimum of 5.000 SQM of gross indoor exhibition space.
The 2017 edition indicates that there are 1.221 exhibition venues serving the industry around the world and the total global venue space is 34.9 million SQM, a 7.2% increase over the last 6 years. During this same period, the number of large venues offering more than 100,000 SQM
of space has grown to 61, a staggering 27% increase.
As a result of the increase of venue projects in Asia/ Pacific, mainly in China, UFI indicated that there is now more venue space available in this region than in North America.
On the other hand, Europe retains its global lead on available venue capacities with 45.4% of the global market share (down 2% compared to 2011), ahead of Asia/Pacific with 23.6% (up 3.3%) and North America with 23.4% (down 1%).
Kai Hattendorf, UFI Managing Director, says: “We are pleased to see that in recent years, additional venue space has become available in almost all regions of the world. Venue investments are long-term investments – so these trends underline the positive outlook for the exhibition industry midto long-term. In addition to adding new space, many venue operators have also made significant investments to upgrade their existing venue capacities.” t

NEW UFI INDUSTRY PARTNERS COMMITTEE WITH RAVINDER SETHI AS CHAIR
In February 2018, UFI announced the creation of a new Working Committee, the “Industry Partners Committee.” It is great news and a fantastic recognition for all the industries related to the exhibition industry. During its Global CEO Summit in Cannes, UFI’s Executive Committee nominated Ravinder Sethi, Managing Director of R.E. Rogers India Pvt. Ltd. and Board Member of IELA, as Chair of the inaugural Industry Partners Committee.
Ravinder, while speaking to the audience in Cannes, commented:
Dear Friends,
As partners, your homogeneous group of professionals offers a broad range of services while sharing a common goal: working closely with organisers and venues to create successful exhibitions.
As partners, you commit to facilitating the transfer of knowledge, sharing your best practices and insights from the whole spectrum of your industries served and services provided.
As partners, and with the exhibition industry constantly evolving, your contributions are vital, adding valuable support across key areas and professions.
Today is one of those historic times when UFI acknowledges the immense contributions having been made by your group.
As a vital first step, the Executive Committee is pleased to announce the creation of an “Industry Partners Committee.”
The Industry Partners Committee’s initial objectives are twofold:
First, to enhance its contributions to UFI, not just as individual members, but also as a committee.
And, second, to be recognised across the board as equal partners in the exhibition industry.
The above objectives are only the initial ones - more will surely emerge over time.
The committee cannot succeed on its own. Therefore, it’s essential that all partner members contribute and assist as well.
Ravinder Sethi - Managing Director of R.E. Rogers India Pvt. Ltd.- India
The first formal meeting of the committee is set to take place alongside the UFI European Conference in Verona, Italy on 2 May.
For more information about the Industry Partners Committee, please contact:
Ravinder Sethi: ravi@rogersworldwideindia.com or Angela Herberholz: angela@ufi.org.
Dear IELA Family,
In recent years , organisers and venues are seeing us more and more as service ‘contractors’ rather than ‘partners’ .
By virtue of UFI’s historic step in forming this Committee, all of this shall now change.
The Committee will not only ensure more contributions to UFI from the likes of freight forwarders and others, but also recognize these contributions coming from ‘equal partners.’
I’m honoured that UFI has chosen me to Chair this Committee. I see it also as a proud moment for IELA
Best regards, Ravinder Sethi t

What’s your Story?
Let’s start with this fundamental question, “What do you do?”
Do you think you have the best response to this question?
Instinctively, you might want to answer the question with a job description, such as, “I am a freight forwarder. I am an onsite manager at … “
The problem is that the conversation might stop quickly once you have given your answer. The concept might be too abstract or not of interest to your interlocutor. And asking the question “what do you do?” can also just be a courtesy in the first place.
It is also true that our industry is not well known by most of the world.
So, “What the hell do you do?” (or more politically correct, “What exactly do you do?”)
A prepared elevator pitch of 40-45 seconds, in which you cycle though all the aspects of what you really do, can be hard! How can you come out with an easy-brilliant-interculturalmemorable speech that will stick in everybody’s head?
If you were a teacher, you could say, “I change the world one child at a time!” That would be an inviting introduction, prompting the questioner to inquire further.
If, when you present yourself, you do it as if you are selling something, listeners might not be interested in you. Even if you adapt your speech to your audience, your introduction could still be considered as in-person SPAM.
You are delivering information that may not be of interest to them. It might be irrelevant to them, but you do not know yet; it is pretty early in the conversation.
Think about television commercials. They are irrelevant to most viewers, but hopefully if they are entertaining and memorable enough, you will remember them.
What is it that you are trying to accomplish by meeting new people? Show them that you are different; you have something more and can help them. You might have some great ideas for them!
Do you know the art of storytelling?
It can show the nature of your character. It can expose those ideas about which you are passionate.
So, exchange stories! But choose the story that fits the person to whom you are speaking. Maybe try to turn the question around to know more about who will be listening to your story so you have more information.
Look for social and business connectors. Here are 5 questions you can ask and which can help you:
1. Where do you work?
2. What inspired you to do that?
3 What do you like about what you do? (It might bring the person you are talking with to a happy spot and he might associate this happy feeling with you).
4. What was it like when you started? (It will cause them to dig deeper and people like to think you are deeply interested in them).
5. How do you approach … (something on which he has commented) now?
After a certain point, you have asked so many questions of the other person that you begin to recognize similarities between your experiences. And if he does not invite you to tell your story, you already have enough information to light up the conversation and let him know how he is related to you. “I found it really interesting that … similarly I have…”
What about attracting interest by showing how you can help?
When you help people, you have a stronger level of connection, than by only talking. One way to help someone in a meeting situation would be by introducing him to someone you already know and with whom there might be a mutually beneficial relationship.
The other way would be by offering to send something—nothing marketing or sales related, but something emotional, something that you have read. No elevator pitch will take you to that level!
Before they begin, story tellers always make sure they know and understand their audience and what they are interested in hearing.
Do not advertise yourself. Get to know the person you are meeting. Forget prepared speeches and ask questions. Exchange your stories and find ways to stay connected. t

Sudhir Dhavan Becomes CEO at R.E. Rogers, India
In January 2018, R.E. Rogers India appointed Sudhir Dhavan as CEO of the organisation. The company indicated that Sudhir’s new role would entrust him with greater authority to lead R.E. Rogers India and allow him to use his charismatic poise to gain a deeper foothold in the industry.
“We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Sudhir. He joined the company about ten years ago and has advanced through progressively more responsible positions in both the Sales and Operations departments. He commands a high level of respect and trust both within the organisation & the industry. We are excited about his new role as the CEO of the company,” commented Ravinder Sethi, Managing Director, R.E. Rogers India, on this latest senior management appointment.
Sudhir has been part of the IELA family for many years and now it is the right moment to ask him a few questions:
IELA: First of all, congratulations Sudhir on your new position. This is a fantastic achievement and recognition of your professionalism. How did you end up in exhibition logistics?
SUDHIR: It was not a planned decision for me to be in exhibition logistics when I joined my past organisation in 1995. It just happened that they started an exhibition logistics division & placed me there. After I got a feeling for show sites and for exhibition madness, I decided to be a part of this Industry. This is how I ended up starting in exhibition logistics.
IELA: Your career is an inspiration for all newcomers. What have you found particularly exciting about your job during this 10 years with R.E. Rogers India Pvt. Ltd.?
SUDHIR: In the past ten years, I have seen and learned a great deal about this Industry from our Managing Director Mr.Ravinder Sethi, who provided me with challenges and opportunities to raise my profile within the company. Under his capable leadership, new ideas always achieved exciting results. His presence on every project helped me to learn first-hand how to apply new solutions to problems.
IELA: Any IELA related anecdote that you would like to share with us?
SUDHIR: It is very difficult to single out any specific experience because there are plenty of them and all of them are memorable:
• Some of my best memories are associated with the teams we brought in for the past 5 IELA Congresses. I believe we made a difference in the thought processes of the industry of which we are a part. It gives me immense pleasure for us to be trend setters in such forums.
• One more memorable experience I had with IELA was twice during two Winter Seminars. I was a lecturer and both times the India Group was the winner of the Customs Workshop.
IELA: Which key benefits has IELA given you over the past years?
SUDHIR:
The key benefits come from meeting different people across the globe. Meeting people face to face gives you the chance to make friends and change some of your own thoughts about this business. It is inspirational to meet people who travel and make so many personal sacrifices to make sure they stay in this industry.
So if I had missed IELA, I would have missed belonging to this business fraternity. I would have missed the friendship and strong personal bonds of our esteemed partners from whom I have always learned and experienced so much.
Thank you Sudhir, we are looking forward to celebrating your new position in San Francisco!
About Sudhir: Ravinder Sethi likes to say, “Sudhir Dhavan belongs to a rare genre of highly versatile and preeminent experts in the global exhibition & logistics industry with multi-dimensional capabilities. With over 24 years of experience in the industry, Sudhir has made a name for himself. As the head of Sales and Operations, Sudhir built up a team of dedicated officers, each capable of enhancing the customer base of the company on an all-India basis. He has also been successful in providing his expertise and vital support on all operational matters for all regions of RERI. He is presently located in Mumbai.”
R.E. Rogers India Pvt. Ltd.: ROGERS WORDWIDE was formed using high-quality Indian personnel backed by ROGERS WORDWIDE Group’s resources to support international exhibition organisers, governments, trade associations and exhibitors in the complex Indian market. It has spread strategically by having offices in New Delhi, Mumbai & Bangalore.

est ers s i ita ati es Intergenerational conflict potential and how to reduce it
Is your working team also made of intergenerational teammates where each generation has its own set of expectations, needs, behaviour patterns, habits, values and working styles?
With an age gap of nearly 50 years between the oldest and youngest employees in some organisations, today’s workplace is most definitely a multi-generational one.
While generational diversity in the workforce promotes a broader range of talent, it can often mean conflicting ideas and stereotyping – the Baby Boomers think Generation X needs a stronger work ethic, Gen X sees the Boomers as self-absorbed workaholics – and everyone thinks Millennials are selfish and self-entitled.
How can the interplay between different generations be shaped in a way that ensures the company’s effectiveness and competitiveness?
Recognising and understanding generational differences can help everyone learn to work together more effectively and transform your workplace from a generation war zone to an agediverse and productive team.
OBSERVE: There is plenty of potential for conflict in these areas:
• working pace (impatient younger vs. diligent older employees).
• lifestyle and way of working (flexible younger employees vs. regulated daily routine of the older employees).
• communication (modern, “offhand“ forms of communication vs. formal communication and one-to-one talk).
temper (less grounded, dynamic younger employees vs. older employees who are wellbalanced and are ready to deeply work their way into a topic).
motivation and commitment (forceful and career-minded younger employees vs. calm older employees waiting for retirement).
• values / mutual understanding (conflicts concerning language, manners, diversity, appreciation of advances in knowledge of the younger ones by the older employees).
• attitudes towards training and learning (lifelong learning for the younger employees vs. low participation in trainings by the older employees).
• adaptability/ willingness to change (dynamic younger vs. rigid older employees). transfer of knowledge (obstinate younger vs. skilled older employees).
• leadership (active younger vs. passive older employees).
• compensation (young junior employees who earn good money vs. older employees who are not promoted anymore).
• deployment/ task allocation (a process of older employees learning from younger ones must also be acknowledged by the younger employees).
• innovation capacity (innovative, willing to change younger employees vs. intermediate employees,
solution: close collaboration
Ultimately it is about offering individual solutions and conveying the corporate values which let acceptance, appreciation and recognition come to life. Conflicts are always manmade and often it is not a conflict between generations, but an interpersonal dispute, which can be easily and smoothly dissolved by an experienced leader.
Also the intermediate generation is able to mediate between young and old.
However, it should not be ignored that there are strong differences
whose performance is, from time to time, questioned by the performance of the younger ones).
ANALYSE: It appears to be a question of corporate culture, leadership and communication whether it is possible to reconcile the generations.
TAKE ACTION: There are several measures that can be adopted in order to reduce conflict potentials:
• sensitisation of all departments for the differing values and competencies of the generations.
• allowance and acceptance of diversity.
• an open dialogue between management and employees.
• flexible regulations and models to meet the different requirements.
• collective team identity in multi-aged teams through mutual goals.
• need-based possibilities for development with a focus on the talents and strengths of each individual
• recognition and acceptance of career disruptions.
• sensitisation of the older employees for women in executive positions.
• preventive health management.
• variable and individual system of compensation.
• overall performance package which is oriented towards stages of life.
between the generations. Every human being is influenced by their socialisation, but also by the sum of their experiences. It might be possible that an older employee has a more advanced media competence than a digital native or that a 55-year-old with a Jawbone and a smartwatch tweeting, sits next to a digital native who is reading a print version of a newspaper.
Sometimes, keeping the lines of communication open is a key to preventing and resolving conflict in a multi-generational environment. Open dialogue and candid conversation should be encouraged.
If each party is willing to see the value of how the other feels, there can be compromise.
Good conversation starters are phrases like: “Help me understand…,” “Tell me how that has been successful for you.,” “May I share some of my thoughts?” and “Would you be open to trying something new?”
The implementation of a comprehensive and proactive model of intergenerational cooperation might be the best solution after all! t

Welcome to Everyone Interested in the Education and Training Working Group,
You have leafed through a thick and content filled IELA report r. and you re still taking the time to read the report about the activities of our Working Group. I sincerely appreciate your interest in our work.
I must confess. It was more a joy than a work-task assignment to be appointed Chairperson of the Education & Training Working Group and communicating with the Working Group and delivering content. All team members have done a fantastic job contributing to the different projects we have been working on.
The Working Group took a look at the webinars that are presently available to IELA members. We discussed some approaches and delivered some thoughts and suggestions to the IELA Secretariat for consideration. I believe the quality of our input was such that the webinars may become even more attractive than they are today.
The same is true for sketching out the IELA Academy. This project is far too big to be dealt with by a group of volunteers from an IELA Working Group. But we have been able to point out certain suggestions that the task managers for IELA Academy can put to use.
Having been responsible for organising the 2nd IELA Operations Summit in Hong Kong (please refer to the separate article in this IELA Report), I was grateful for the contributions our Working Group made to improve different aspects of the event. I was in a very convenient position to receive many suggestions for improving the quality of the Operations Summit, and I believe the results speak for themselves.
A key project has been “Cultural Skills and Competence” for which members of the orking roup created country files, explaining Dos and Don’ts when visiting a particular country. All members of the Working Group delivered at least one country file, which will be published in the forthcoming IELA Reports. When you refer to the section on India in this IELA report, you will be able to read the first country file.
The present project underway is a review of the IELA Training Manual (ITM). In a fastchanging world, we want to make sure that this important training tool is always current. Each member of the WG has taken on the responsibility to review two chapters. The Working Group then will communicate with Jim Kelty, the producer of the ITM, to make possible changes. Frankly speaking, the ITM is so complete and ageless that we expect it will be of value to members of IELA in exactly the same shape as it was when it was published.
This will be all for today. I’m looking forward to working with this exciting group until the Congress in San Francisco and hopefully will again have some of you taking an interest in the IELA Education & Training Working Group.

Dear Fellow IELA Members,
Happy 2018 and Year of the Dog! I hope this year brings everyone good health, lots of happiness, and great success! It’s time for another update on the “Think Tank” Group and I am happy to report some great things that have come from the team.
First of all, the group is in the process of implementing the “Organiser Portal.” This portal will be located on the IELA website and will allow show organisers to access important details and information about IELA Members and what is pertinent for them to know regarding their freight. The portal should be up and running before the Congress in San Francisco and hopefully we can give the members a little tutorial on how to navigate the tool to get some insight on what else needs to be included in this important resource. If you have anything you would like to include in the “Organiser Portal” before the San Francisco Congress, please feel free to reach out to me and/or the Secretariat.
Also, as you all know, the “Think Tank” group is on a quest to make Freight Forwarding “Sexy” and to attract Millennials to the industry. However, in order to bring Millennials to our industry, we needed to see exactly where they stood amongst our members. So, we worked closely with the Secretariat and two of our board members, Mariane Ewbank (Fulstanding, Brazil) and Emmanuel Pitchelu (ESI, France) to create a Millennial Survey, which was sent out to all IELA Members. The results were very interesting. Let s just say there definitely needs to be more discussion about Gen Y within IELA. Overall,
the survey gave us some great insight to use for future projects.
In San Francisco, the “Think Tank” group will be working on putting together IELAs first Vendor Showcase. The showcase, in which different companies from different industries will exhibit products of interest to IELA Members, will be presented during the Congress in Milan. The showcase will not only be a resource for members to have exclusive access to business necessities, but also a great revenue stream for the IELA organisation. The group will have more information for the members in San Francisco.
And as always, I cannot stress enough that we rely on the input of the IELA Members to “Think” things up. All of your suggestions and ideas are greatly welcomed, so please do reach out to me and/or attend the “Think Tank” meeting in San Francisco this year! We’re always looking for new team members to join our group and work together as a team to contribute remarkable ideas and implement interactive projects that will have a great impact on the IELA organisation. And don’t worry, I won’t corner you to take on some tasks if you’re just stopping by our meeting. We always welcome observers!
I look forward to seeing everyone again in my home state of California and for us to have an awesome, productive Congress. I mean we are in Silicon Valley after all, the core of the United States’ innovation; there should definitely be some good things to come out of this year’s meeting!
Cheers to our continued success and teamwork, Tania t

Dear IELA Members,
I must admit. I always knew that the MWG was a vibrant group, but I never fully appreciated how vibrant until I took over as Chair last June in Prague. So far this year, we have received thirteen new applications, two of which are from white spot areas. The group is certainly proactive in checking applications, and I would go so far as to say that every application received is dissected prior to the final approval from the B . ur standards for processing any new applications remain the same, so even if you are in a white spot area, you still have to meet IELA’s high standards for acceptance.
One thing has become clear in my time as Chair. If you want to become a member of IELA, you had better make sure that your application is strong. If it is not, then you can be sure that this WG will reject it.
In Prague, the BOM agreed to set up a Task Force (TF), which I was asked to chair, to look at every aspect of the membership application process. The TF consisted of Ravinder, Achim, Vicki, Lena and myself. Through a series of emails and two faceto-face meetings, the TF has come up with a number of proposals in various areas: the recruitment of new members and how we actually process the applications. I must give a big thank you to each and every member of this TF group for the hard work.
A presentation was given to the BOM in Hong Kong with one of the main talking
points being the proposal to move to an online portal. Whilst I realise that we spoke about this in Prague, the proposal has now gathered steam and it was agreed that the matter should proceed forthwith. We must, however, be acutely aware that we have to take into account the new “GDPR” rules that are due to come into effect from the 25th of May this year.
Other areas that were explored included better utilisation of the information we already have available, better use of the Partnering Event in relation to white spots and the establishment of a clear and concise membership policy.
Much work was done and there is a lot more to do, however I was particularly excited that the TF was positive and productive but also (along with the proposed online application process) that it will provide IELA with a new basis for moving forward with the MWG and the Association in the years ahead.
On a special note, this year MWG Vice chair, Lena Widman has ably assisted me. All I can say is that when I need someone who can get straight to the point, then Lena is that person. I must give a big thank you to Lena for her support and advice. It has been really appreciated.
The next time the MWG meets will be San Francisco where, I hope, I can still be Chair to have more news.

Dear Fellow IELA Members,
A new year with new challenges and tasks has started and I am sure that all of you are on top of it again.
In my last report, I mentioned the IELA security guidelines, which were about to be established. With the kind help of a fellow board member who has fine tuned the English grammar and comprehensibility of the guidelines, we finali ed this important document. The IELA security guidelines have now already gone to the next step and are being reviewed by a recognized security specialist for the last fine tuning. Hopefully, we can present the final version to the membership in San Francisco.
You may not have noticed, but the IELA Survey is working on a new system and it has proved to be more reliable and stable to use. You will now receive a confirmation email once your survey is completed. This will give the respondent proof that his or her survey data has been saved and transmitted.
There is also a small change in the questions of the Export Agent survey. On February 7th 2018, we had the opportunity to host a webinar on the importance of the IELA Standard Survey and were able to show the participants how easy the survey can be completed.
There are still a couple of projects open for discussion related to the survey methods and transparency and establishment of a new database. Hopefully, we can create some more topics during these ongoing conversations.
Last but not least, the Standards & Customs Working Group has gone live on social media. With the great help of the Secretariat’s designated social media specialist, we can now deliver key messages related to our Working Group via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Follow us on these channels and stay on top of our work for IELA.

Dear Partners and Friends,
Just back from our Operations Summit in Hong Kong, I am excited by the great talks and insight our host speakers Ian Hume and Konstantin Stathopoulos, respectively, delivered on the exhibition and aviation businesses. The simultaneous presence of representatives of these two industries demonstrates that our job is the connection point between exhibition transportation and logistics.
Exhibition logistics is central to the event industry and we have to work hard to improve our communication with the other players of the transportation supply chain in order to increase our working standards and offer the best quality solutions to event organisers and exhibitors.
This target is the scope of our Working Group and its success hinges on keeping the focus on association growth and visibility within the exhibitions industry (the very marker of the increasing economy).
I’m very glad to tell you that the IELA Industry Relations Working Group is making giant strides on the MoU path!
A couple of years ago, I invited all of you to participate in the different regional events in order to promote our role in the Industry . And now, the 8 th Annual Conclave of the Indian Exhibition Industry Association (IEIA), scheduled for next May in Hyderabad has invited Mariane and me
as IELA representatives to meet the most important Indian organisers and global players in the event industry.
As you know, India is one of the fastest growing countries in the exhibition industry. IEIA, with their initiatives, has been proactively contributing to this growth trajectory.
I am very proud and excited to be part of this important event and look forward to sharing this extraordinary experience with all of you during our IELA Congress in San Francisco.
San Francisco also represents the chance to present the ideas of our WG regarding the additional input we want to provide to the industry to increase the knowledge of our role as the leading association for event logistics.
Certainly, in today’s world, measuring performance is everybody’s ultimate objective to improve business and develop further results. IELA, as a content-driven association, definitely wants to be upfront and ready to contribute to shaping the future of the exhibitions market with data, analysis, and ideas that can help facilitate growth through the understanding of our work. But, even more important, is communicating the complexity of exhibition logistics and importance of quality service to exhibitors.
More to follow in San Francisco … don’t miss the appointment!!!
