A Proud Farewell
Dear IELA Members,This is the last time I will be writing to you as your Chairwoman. I must say that it has been a great honor to serve IELA. The last two years were intense and focused on delivering more benefits to our members and taking the IELA name and recognition to another level.
Now, it is time for a new Chairperson to take over and lead us. Meanwhile, I’ll keep contributing and working for the betterment of IELA as a Board Member until my term ends in 2019.
As Chairwoman, I took great pleasure and pride in seeing our IELA ITM finally become a reality. Having the Operations Summit 2018 totally focused on operations with strong speakers was another one of the goals for my chairmanship. A non-stop training program was launched – the Webinars. Boosting our presence on social media and strengthening relationships with other associations raised the visibility of IELA and event logistics. The Health & Safety and Security guidelines developed by our Standard & Customs Working Group will serve the industry for years to come.
Always thinking ahead during my chairwomanship, we restructured some Working Groups, creating Think Tank, Industry Relations, and Education & Training. And, as I mentioned in my article published in the IELA Report 86 Spring 2018, we started to review our membership mechanism, a long and complex process that is still ongoing.
While these are some of the milestones that we have accomplished since 2016, it’s also important to note the next Chairperson will receive our finances in good shape.
I am the first woman, the first South American and the first Brazilian to be elected Chairperson. And I hope I’m not the last. IELA is a plural association where nationality, gender, and company size have no importance.
In San Francisco, we will have new elections and I suggest that you listen very carefully to the candidate’s presentations and take your vote very seriously. Keep in mind that the future of IELA is in its members’ hands.
I’d like to finish this article by thanking my fellow Board Members, the Committee, Secretariat and team, WG Chairs and Vice-chairs, my partner Claudio Machado and the team at Fulstandig, and especially all of you for your support.
Thank you!!!
IELA can always count on me.

AMR GROUP IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO OUR TEAM
Claudia Sabbah and Tonya Archer joined AMR Group at the end of 2017. We are looking forward to their talents assisting AMR Group in providing the highest level of service to our customers and our partners. They have already made themselves valuable additions to our company and we look forward to their success for many years. Here are a few words from our new team members:
Hello! My name is Claudia Sabbah. I started in the industry (by chance as most of us do) in 2013. I was a young bride-to-be who honestly just needed a job. But I haven’t looked back since. My start in the industry was working for a trade show contractor. I learned so many things that have contributed to my career in the industry. To say I loved that job would be an understatement, but there was just so much to learn that I spread my wings and took my next step in the industry as an account manager for an exhibit house. That was an awesome time, building relationships with clients and seeing how their creative touch and the touch of the company blended to bring a vision to life on the tradeshow floor.
And then curiosity kicked in. I was soon asking, ‘how do all of these booths make it to the tradeshow floor’? So many people, so many cultures are all here for one purposethe tradeshow. And thus, I spread my wings one more time and headed into the world of freight. And being on this side of the industry is incredible. I am currently an operations specialist, and just knowing that my hands
are in the large pot of contributing to the many pieces of success that is a tradeshow is an awesome feeling!
Hi! My name is Tonya Archer. I have spent most of my life in Henderson, Nevada. I call Henderson my home. I am the 3 rd generation to graduate from Basic High School and thanks to the dedication of my business and accounting teachers, I graduated knowing that accounting was the field I wanted to be in. My education is in business management with an emphasis in accounting. My professional career has allowed me to receive 15 years of accounting experience in several industries.
I have been married for 18 years to my high school sweetheart. We have four children who are very active in sports, which has allowed me to become very active in our youth sports community. If you’re ever looking for me, just ask where the closest baseball field or soccer field is, and you will probably see me there catching some of the best games you can have the opportunity to watch t

During Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, my colleagues Ms. Dong and Kevin had a wonderful time handling exhibition goods for a well-known Chinese company, Huawei, and working together with EF-GSM Ltd and RESA EXPO LOGISTICS in Barcelona.
MWC is one of the largest telecommunications exhibitions in the world and this year the show was even bigger than before, covering an area of 120,000 sqm with 2,400 exhibitors from 205 countries and 107,000 visitors.
The move-in period coincided with Chinese New Year, so instead of being at home with the family and celebrating with lanterns and fireworks, Ms. Dong and Kevin had a challenging and intense job to carry out, with forklifts and cranes around them. They were happy and relaxed because they were working with BTG China’s good friends: Mr. Roger Bowman (EFGSM Ltd) and Mr Pablo Martinez, RESA EXPO LOGISTICS.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing having to face thousands of trucks and cases, but with Roger
Even if they did experience some of the usual, annual problems such as vessel delays, strikes at the port, missing empty cases, etc., and they were perhaps a little nervous, they never lost their confidence because they knew the team would always find a solution to solve any problem.
With the team standing behind them and some strong support from the officials, they felt powerful.
The exhibition closed some time ago, but we still have very good memories...
We, the members of IELA, gather together as friends from many different countries. We are professional and focused and we strive to satisfy the exhibitors and make their exhibition participation a success.
This friendship gives us the passion to love this job! t

IT IS FRANCE’S TURN TO WELCOME THE DINOSAURS!
The dedicated exhibition, inspired by one of the most famous blockbusters in the world, opened its gates in Paris as part of an international tour.
Transit Air Cargo together with its local partner Group ESI were proud to be able to successfully complete the customs clearance services of the various air and sea freight consignments, heavy lifting arrangements, as well as material handling at the venue on time.
With a total of 1,500 cbm of sea freight (28 X 40-ft containers) and another 5 tons of air freight, it was a massive and yet intensive operation on site at the Cité du Cinéma Studio, an interestingly unique venue endorsed by Luc Besson the famous film director.
To ensure the exhibition’s smooth transition from one country to the other, a good coordinated workflow and an experienced team of trusted partners was needed to make this ‘land before time’ stay alive.
So here is a big shout out to the ESI on-site team, ‘Merci beaucoup! On vous aime’.
Another note of appreciation to the various TAC offices: ‘Well done and 感谢你们的支持和帮忙!‘
We are never too old to play and learn with dinosaurs. And what a ‘ROARING’ good time we had working on this! t

AND HANDLING
GoodbyeBig Steve
Stephen J. Barry, Jr ., whom we affectionately called Big Steve, passed away on 27 April.
Many of us lost a great friend, founding father of IELA, and a consummate professional. He was a trailblazer who taught us all a lot. Without Steve, IELA would never have become the association it is today. Goodbye, Steve. You will remain in our hearts always.
On behalf of your friends, colleagues, and partners.
Hans R. BrauchliOTIM – 1948-2018: 70 YEARS IN BUSINESS
On 3rd April 2018, OTIM S.p.A. celebrated its 70th Anniversary of having been founded in 1948 by Mr. Enrico Carniglia and Mr. Mario Rossolimo whose son and daughter (Mario and Patrizia), as well as three of their grandchildren (Enrico, Paola, and Chiara), are currently active in the company and members of the board of directors.
The exhibition department started its operation in 1964 and has been growing consistently, especially since 1968 when Enzo Ragazzi joined OTIM. In the mid 90s, Enzo moved to Beijing to manage the company’s operations in the Far East and Giampiero Beltrami took over the management of the exhibition department. More recently, in 2006, OTIM opened a branch office in Rivoli (Turin).
It is primarily devoted to exhibitions in Europe under the management of Marta Piccoli. Five years ago, Enzo’s son, Massimo, moved to Shanghai to become Manager of OTIM International Freight Forwarding (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. Last year, Giampiero reached the age of retirement, although the company still relies on his experience to assist the new generation in charge: Chiara, Giuseppe and Pietro t
FELIX MOVES SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO MALAYSIA AND BACK UNDER GRUELING TIMELINE
Moving delicate musical instruments and equipment internationally can be very challenging. Managing a very strict tour schedule adds to the complexity. Felix Expo Logistics (M) Sdn Bhd based in Kuala Lumpur helped manage back-to-back performances of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) with very little room for error.
The company provided climate-controlled, air-ride trucks to regulate temperature and monitor vibrations. It also used specialized, well-trained movers for loading and unloading equipment and performed customs clearance under an ATA carnet. The shipment needed a police escort and security detail from its arrival in Malaysia to the Malaysian Philharmonic’s venue and back to the port. Felix also supervised on-site operations, engineering, and the testing of equipment with sound technicians.
Felix needed 25 people to manage the requirements of the SSO tour, however, the biggest challenge was the extremely tight timeline between collecting the shipment in Singapore, delivering it in Kuala Lumpur, and shipping it back for another show in Singapore. All the instruments—worth USD 1,000,000.00— had to be handled with extreme care and the company had to ensure that the temperature was controlled throughout the eight-hour journey.
Despite the stress of shipping such sensitive cargo, there is one very big benefit to moving an entire orchestra. Some of the staff is able to listen to the performance.
The tour is an amazing and irreplaceable experience with continuous excitement, the professionals from Felix say. It has helped them to understand the very specialized requirements of the orchestra industry t

PAYING HOMAGE TO GREEK HERITAGE WITH OUR LOGISTICS EXPERTISE
Over our 95 years of history, Orphee Beinoglou has handled all kinds of projects associated with transport and logistics. Nevertheless, there are some projects that only occur once in a lifetime due to their nature, size, and unique specifications. One of those rare projects was the relocation of the National Library of Greece , a job that was recently awarded to Orphee Beinoglou.
Both the planning and implementation of this project were definitely big challenges since day one given that this relocation was associated with moving Greek national heritage and its treasures. Our first priority was to take advantage of our broad expertise in all segments of transport and logistics. Therefore, we thought the first step would be to form a multiple discipline project team. We combined the backgrounds of individuals with experience in managing exhibitions (for achieving just in time delivery), fine arts (for handling irreplaceable items), moving (for all the packing needs), and, last but not least, logistics (for orchestrating the supply chain of the project and its processes).
For moving more than one million books within a three-month period, we had to ensure first of all that more than 50 skilled people along with five temperature-controlled trucks would be allocated on a daily basis for this project. Practically, this can be translated into a transported volume of approximately 15.000 cubic meters.
As a second step, we had to deal with logistics issues from ordering the necessary supplies to constructing and reinforcing a
capable number of wooden trolleys (900 tailormade wooden trolleys were constructed), which would ensure a good work flow (buffer) without stops and further delays.
Offering substantial training to all people involved was a key element for reducing the lead time for picking, placing books in boxes, moving the trolleys to the trucks, loading the trucks, coordinating police escorts, unpacking the boxes in the new building, and placing the books on the new shelves.
To emphasise the importance of the process, the selection of each book, as well as placement on the wooden trolleys and likewise the placement on the new shelves, had to be made in serial order. Plus, all wooden trolleys had to be serially numbered and each box had to be marked with the flow of loading (left to right or right to left) so that we could avoid mistakes.
Another aspect which made this project unique was the enormous declared insurance value (over 200 million Euro). A large number of the rare books we had to handle were issues dated to the B.C Century. This project involved a holy removal where in all circumstances all parties were obligated to demonstrate respect.
We had no room to deviate from the processes and specifications which made this project unique. No matter what involvement we may have had as a company in similar projects, this one was an homage to the Greek heritage of all of us at Orphee Beinoglou. t

THE POWER OF #GED18
For the third year in a row, the exhibition industry will gather together for a special event. Global Exhibitions Day, GED18, will be held on 6th June, 2018.
Everyone linked to the exhibition industry can participate in this UFI initiative, which aims to highlight the positive impact the exhibition industry has on jobs, business innovation, and local investment. It is a vital contributor to economic growth in cities, regions and countries.
As the International Exhibition Logistics Association, we will NOT miss it! It is crucial for our organisation to strengthen the role of the exhibition community worldwide, to raise GED18 awareness, and boost our membership’s participation.
Here are several of the actions IELA has planned:
Team-In-Action Pictures
Let’s show the exhibition industry what we can do!
Send your team picture to the Secretariat with your answer to the question, ‘Why do you love exhibitions’?
#NumberChallenge
UFI launched the #GEDNumberChallenge social media campaign, inviting participants to answer the question, ‘How many GED supporters can you fit in one single picture’?
The 2nd IELA Operations Summit was the perfect opportunity for IELA to participate in the Number Challenge. See our #GED18 supporters in these pictures.

Have you received your IELA Report Edition 86? Share a selfie with the magazine on Facebook and/ or Twitter, indicating that the ‘IELA #GEDNumberChallenge has been delivered to City, Country - #GED18’. Spread the message and show you are also a supporter.
IELA Human Chain
From physical to digital!
During the OS18, we made a human chain to deliver a special #GED18 box. We also made a video to illustrate that IELA is ’Powering the Exhibition Industry – Working together delivering excellence around the world – EXHIBITION LOGISTICS strongly supports GLOBAL EXHIBITIONS DAY 2018’.
This video was included in the digital version of the previous IELA Report and it was shared on social media on April 6th
But the campaign is still ongoing. You can help to e-deliver the message by commenting on the video on Facebook or Twitter with the caption, ‘We continue the chain and we confirm the e-delivery of this #GED18 box in [Your City, Country]’.
We need to continue the chain virtually – Let’s e-deliver the package!

THE BRIDGE
The Bridge is IELA’s new project designed to promote communication between the Members and the BOM. It is an initiative of David Palomo from Suomen Messulogistiikka Oy, Finland, and René Carvajal Garcia from New Age of International Business, S.A. de C.V., Mexico.
René and David have been thinking and talking about this proposal for a long time and decided to offer it at a time when the “family” was together: during the Day Out in Prague. They felt it was the right moment to approach Elizabeth and Mariane to discuss their idea, which was pleasantly accepted by the BOM later.
David, what is the origin of this initiative?
As few years ago (I think it was the Munich Congress) we talked about the loneliness that some of the participants at the Congress feel when they arrive for the first time. As everything is new, and no face-to-face contact has been made previously, the start of the Congress can be tough for some of our new colleagues.
Also, participants may think that approaching the BOM is almost impossible. So, we wanted to create a bridge between the participants and the BOM to ensure that everybody feels comfortable and has an equal opportunity to propose new things for the development of the IELA family.
Why is it important to you?
This has been personally my battle for many years. I come from a little country without the kind of big business. that the Germans, Americans, or Indians have, yet I still offer my help, friendship and partnership to everybody. I do it not only for the business, but also for the wellness of the IELA family members.
What is the spirit of The Bridge and what are the objectives of The Bridge?
Empowerment of the people:
It is necessary to return to the basic idea that all members are equal members/persons and that every voice is necessary and needed.
A sense of belonging:
All members should know the importance of their contributions, not only their economic value, but also their ability to vote and give their points of view.
IELA pride:
We recognise the difficulty associated with the exhibition logistics business and the professionalism that IELA members demonstrate.
Areas of opportunity: It is important to channel the ideas or suggestions to the right place.
Promote the communication:
The Bridge is a conduit between the members and the BOM for: a. IELA members to know what the BOM does, their efforts, and the results of their actions.
b. BOM members to know what happens with the members, what they want, and what their concerns are, etc.
What will be the first actions of The Bridge?
On 13th June 2018, days before our annual Congress, René and David will hold a special webinar to present The Bridge.
The presentation will give a special “Introduction to the IELA Congress” for new members and newcomers.
The two will share their personal experiences and tips to help first-timers get the most out of their experience at an IELA Event. IELA members wishing to support this project and give a hand can also participate in this webinar.
The IELA Congress will start with the Induction Meeting, and just after that, all new members and newcomers are invited to have a meeting with The Bridge to get to know each other a little bit better and to clarify some questions they may have.
During the Congress, The Bridge Info Counter will be located in the lounge area, next to the Conference entrance. Feel free to come! The Bridge go-to person will be there every morning before the event programme starts!

VAT TAX IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
As of 1st January 2018, the United Arab Emirates began imposing a value added tax (VAT) of five percent on the CIF value of goods imported into the country, as well as goods and services provided to individuals in the country. VAT taxes exist in many countries around the world. It raises the cost of doing business in those destinations and begs a number of questions about when and how the tax is assessed, paid, and reclaimed. IELA has collected a number of resources to help Members learn more about the new tax and how their customers might be impacted. The materials can be accessed in the Member Zone on the IELA website. t
Business tips for addressing VAT in UAE:
• Effective Date: 1st January 2018
• Applicable Tax: 5%
• Online Portal Registration: From 1st October 2017
Your trust is our motivation – your success is our mission. Good cooperation in the digital age.
The Future is Here
People have always encountered change with mixed feelings. Now, however, we live in special times. Innovations are emerging and spreading faster than ever before.
But innovation does not happen in a vacuum. It is the result of deep collaboration and communication between inventors and users.
San Francisco is the perfect environment in which to build bridges. The technology ecosystem of Silicon Valley , with its startup mindset, tech gurus, IoT engineers, and developers, is the place where innovation is born.
The best way to take advantage of this proximity and follow the example of these great leaders of innovation is to develop programming around collaboration and communication. For this reason, we have worked on a new event concept that will help us to reach three main objectives:
} Boosting Congress content to emphasise problem-solving.
} Boosting involvement with small-group discussions designed to generate interaction, vibrant exchanges, and clear group outcomes.
} Boosting effective and productive results by enabling every participant to leave with at least ONE key business solution for the upcoming business period.
We believe that a positive attitude toward the future will allow each of us to evolve in a challenging – and changing – world. Our goal is to deliver knowledge and help you navigate through even the most trying of times. Here’s to embracing all of the exciting new happenings our industry has to offer!
Associations are crucial for fostering transformation and generating a flow of creative ideas that can add value to our industry and members’ economic development. If we, as an association, are able to support our members’ needs to be part of something bigger, then transformation will take place.
Through our events—one of the most important membership benefits—our association can play an active role in transforming the industry. We can address our members’ and delegates’ needs to evolve.
Let’s create an event legacy together. Let’s make our event in San Francisco memorable.
Driving Growth – Boosting Action.
Looking forward to welcoming you to the future!
See you on-site & kind regards,
Elizabeth t

During the voting, all IELA members will vote for:
a) New members of the Committee (show of hands).
b) New Members of the Board of Management (paper ballot to elect six of nine candidates).
c) Chairman of the Board of Management (paper ballot).
d) External Auditor (show of hands).
IELA COMMITTEE CANDIDATES:
The Committee is composed of three members, each elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. It designates its Chairperson and organises itself.
The Committee is responsible for verifying and preparing:
a) that the decisions of the Board are in accordance with the provisions of the Articles;
b) that the financial status of IELA remains in accordance with the principles established by the General Assembly;
c) that the finances of IELA are managed in a forthright manner, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles;

This year, one Committee Candidate has to be elected and the candidate is:
Markus Eichenberger (Re-election) BTG SUISSE LTD., SWITZERLANDELECTION of EXTERNAL AUDITOR:
AUDICONSULT Geneva stands for re-election as IELA’s External Auditor.
Why do we, as an association, require an External Auditor?
Auditors are used to ensure that organisations maintain accurate financial records and statements. An External Auditor is someone who examines the financial records and business transactions of an Association with which he or she is not affiliated.
An External Auditor is typically used to avoid conflicts of interest and to ensure the integrity of the auditing process. When an audit is performed, it is the financial auditor’s responsibility to make sure that records are examined in an honest, professional, and forthright manner. t
On Friday June 22nd, the elections for the six seats available on the IELA Board of Management will take place during the General Assembly. We are glad to present the nine candidates, in alphabetical order, standing for election for a two-year term
Candidates to BOM Elections
Mr. Vicky Bedi
As a chartered accountant with extensive experience in fiscal laws and as PS Bedi Group CEO, Vicki Bedi’s focus has been on providing unique solutions and deepening relationships with customers across all logistics domains. He has served on the boards of IELA, IAEE, PLN, and GPLN, and brings extensive experience to delivering member benefits.
If elected, he will leverage his relationships and use his passion for young leaders to motivate IELA Members to volunteer and take leadership positions in WGs and the BOM. He will work toward expanding member benefit programs, including the launch of regional events and business opportunities that invite organisers/ project managers, etc. to IELA Events. t
Mr. Jeff Broom
Jeff Broom started his career in exhibition logistics in 1986 when he moved to Birmingham to join TNT Exposervice. At the time, he was advised that he would either ‘love or hate exhibitions’. From day one, he loved them and still does to this day even after nearly 20 years of working at Europa Showfreight.
This is his second attempt at joining the BOM and he hopes (with the members’ support) that he can make it a successful attempt. ‘ IELA, like any organisation, needs to evolve, and I hope that in the future I can help IELA achieve its goals’
‘I look forward to receiving your support and hope to see you all in San Francisco’ t
Mr. Feyzan Erel
Feyzan Erel founded GRUPTRANS in 1987. He joined IELA in 1992. What he started ‘with three lovely persons in a small office’ is now a family of 30 wonderful individuals.
No one ever left the company to work for another forwarder and he is proud of them.
Feyzan is the CEO of the company, but he still pushes crates together with all the workers and staff when needed. He still remembers the long nights, his short naps over the carpet rolls in the hall during build-up, and sharing his sandwich with the others.
IELA’s main asset is its Members from all over the world. Erel has always preferred to invest first in people.
‘I will be standing for reelection until the young generation takes over. I am a proud motorcycle rider, private pilot, licensed forklift operator, and a good father’ t
Mr. Guido Fornelli
Guido Fornelli holds a degree in Business Administration and has spent his entire career in freight forwarding and exhibitions and events logistics at Expotrans where he became Managing Director in 2005. Under his leadership, the company has grown from two to six branches in Italy and one in Moscow. Before becoming MD, Guido played different roles within Expotrans developing special projects in new markets and industries. He has been an active Member of IELA since 1992 and served as a board member from 2003 to 2008.
He has supported the Association as a member or chairperson of different working committees and at numerous IELA events. He is currently the chair of the Industry Relations WG. t
Mr. Achim Lotzwick
Achim Lotzwick joined the industry in 1976. Today, Achim is responsible for the entire exhibition freight logistics division at Cretschmar, with offices in four different locations in Germany.
Achim was Chairman of different Working Groups in IELA. He was elected to the IELA Board of Management in 2007 and was Vice Chairman and Chairman of IELA. In the year 2013, he was awarded the IELA Honorary Membership.
Our industry is changing drastically and rapidly. Virtual exhibitions, Big Data, IT challenges and Millennials are making a footprint. Achim would like to contribute to making all members and the Association, competent achievers in this future environment. t
Mr. James Ng
James Ng worked for KCDAT SIN as Operations Manager from 1974 to 1981. There, his interests were piqued by handling the first ‘Indee Exhibitions’ in 1974 and the French ‘Technical Exhibitions’ in 1976.
He served as Director/ General Manager of RE Rogers Singapore from 1981 to 2000 where he helped to grow the group in the Far East and led its introduction into China.
In 2002, he started Transit Air Cargo Singapore where he is Managing Director for the group in the AsiaPacific Region. In 2006, TACS bought a 10,000 sqm warehouse cum office, which serves as a HQ for their branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, and Myanmar. t
Mr. Mehmet Özal
Mehmet Ozal started in the exhibition industry as the foreign trade manager of a textile machinery distributor that exhibited in trade fairs in the 1990s. He changed careers, and in 1998 became Assistant General Manager of Turksped, responsible for exhibition logistics.
After successfully managing many events worldwide, he moved to Ekol Logistics in 2002 to establish and develop the Fairs & Exhibitions department.
He is currently a member of the executive board of Ekol and General Manager of Sea & Air Freight, which includes the Fairs & Events and Project Transportation business units. He considers his other personal interests, photography, history, and fine arts, as delicious spices of life. t
Mr. Christoph Rauch
After graduating from the European Business College in Munich, Christoph – a second generation exhibition logistics leader –started his career with BTG in 2001.
Christoph has been the Managing Director of BTG since 2006. Following in his father’s footsteps (a founding father of IELA), he has always been very active in IELA. He was and is a member of several Working Groups (Training, Membership and Standards) and was elected to the Board of Management of IELA in 2007. He was Treasurer and Vice-Chairman of IELA twice and was finally elected as Chairman of the Board of Management of IELA in Amsterdam in 2014.
Christoph prefers to spend his free time with his family, riding his motorbike and visiting the Allianz Arena, the home of his favourite football club – FC Bayern Munich. t
Mr. Bas Wiendels
Bas Wiendels is an energetic and enthusiastic Dutchman. He founded Valverde 12 years ago to focus on a high service level for event-logistics services. IELA has played a prominent role in his 25year career. Bas attended his first IELA Congress in 2000 in Edinburgh and hosted a creative and dynamic forum discussion at the IELA Congress in Amsterdam in 2014.
He has been a board member of the Dutch Exhibition Association (CLC/VECTA) for more than 5 years, representing Dutch suppliers.
He is a host speaker at the Amsterdam and Tilburg University of Applied Science where he shares his passion and stories about the logistics business to attract the next generation of professionals to the industry. t

Welcome to the 7th IELA Partnering Event!
PARTNERING DEFINITION:
Establishing a long term win-win relationship based on mutual trust and teamwork, and on sharing risks and rewards. The objective is to focus on what each party does best, by sharing resources, and establishing specific roles for each participant. (businessdictionary.com)
Seven years of partnering. What other international organisation can boast of this track record? It is fitting though, if you consider that this is one of the platforms on which our association was built.
The purpose of our group is to build and develop relationships, forge new partnerships, and create new business. That is exactly how IELA was born. In 1985, seven gentlemen who are now considered icons in our industry came together in Geneva to examine ways to increase business, improve processes, expand horizons, and ensure that we all adhered to the same standards. That was truly IELA’s first Partnering Event.
Our first event in Barcelona was highly successful with 252 delegates, and by last year in Prague we had grown to 400+. From these sessions, our members have increased their business and the Association has benefited greatly from the partnering delegates seeing the value of IELA and becoming members themselves. The event provides growth for the individual delegates, member companies, and the association as well.
Associations and connections are essential to the success of any business. And in this time of electronic everything, the importance of face-to-face meetings should not be discounted. How many times have you had a client, an agent, or an organiser on the cusp of making a decision, but unable to do so? Then, with a personal meeting everything comes together. It may be old school, but it’s still relevant.
It can be intimidating—a room of 400 people, all wearing nametags, looking anxious, some you know, some you don’t. It pushes some of us out of our comfort zone. But we’ve all been there before – your first school dance, job interviews, first day at a new job. I believe our Association is excellent at making our delegates feel welcome and comfortable.
So, relax and enjoy – we are all there for the same purpose, to meet new people, discuss business opportunities, and develop what we hope will be long-lasting relationships t

True Connections Are Face To Face
At our roots, we are social human beings. From my point of view, the trust and drive behind solid business relationships comes from sharing a real, physical presence –and that’s something that even the most productive online conversations can’t provide. WebEx, Skype, FaceTime, or any of the other digital communication platforms can’t convey the subtle body language, facial expressions, or warmth of human interaction in the same way that a friendly hug or handshake can. Face-to-face meetings are the best opportunities for humans to exchange positive energy, values, and interests.
So what are the benefits of networking in person?
There are many byproducts of real-life networking, such as:
u Receiving critical feedback
Obtaining recognition for ideas
Making new and renewing old acquaintances
Getting inspiration from peers and mentors
Feeding a passion for learning and engaging
Developing sustainable relationships
Despite all of the benefits of interacting with humans, it may not be easy for some people at first. Networking is a skill that needs to be developed—sometimes gradually. In a diverse setting with many individuals from different
cultures, it can be challenging to make initial contact. Fortunately, the IELA Partnering Event makes it easy for delegates to engage with one another, even for the first time.
Over the years, we have built a dynamic and user-friendly program for bringing professionals together. It is IELA’s way of demonstrating the power of face-to-face networking.
We look forward to helping you truly connect. t

Partnering Event Night
Partnering Event Night, the final dinner of our annual meeting, is the last opportunity for organised networking. Enjoy informal conversations and take home some selfies and photos as souvenirs. It’s a time not to say goodbye, but to say, ‘see you next year’.
This year, we will be celebrating in Fort Mason , once known as San Francisco Port of Embarkation US Army as it is a former United States Army post located in the northern Marina District, alongside San Francisco Bay. Initially used during
World War II as a coastal defense site and subsequently as a military port facility, it was the principal port for the Pacific campaign.
Today it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the site of several cultural facilities. The entire fort area is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, with over 49 buildings of historic significance.
Join the Partnering Event Night and savour the last moments of a great IELA event!

FACTS & STATISTICS
Location: North America
Capital: Washington, District of Columbia
States: The USA has 50 states and one federal district (Washington, DC).
Official Languages: English, Spanish is spoken in many locations. Most official business is conducted in English.
Population: 321.1 Million, of very mixed race and heritage
Time Zones: On the main continent, there are 4 time zones (Eastern Time, Central Time, Mountain Time, Pacific Time). In addition, there are 2 more time zones for Alaska and Hawaii, and for 5 dependencies making a total of 11 time zones. To add another challenge, neither Hawaii nor the 5 dependencies use Daylight Saving Time.
Climate: Travelers should become familiar with the possible climate options of various destinations. Weather conditions vary greatly between the different states and four seasons. One could experience anything from severe heat to very cold temperatures in the same region. Hurricanes, tornados, and blizzards can occur in specific regions during certain seasons.
STATES OF AMERICA
THE LANGUAGE
The official language is English. Spanish is also spoken in many locations. Most official business is conducted in English. Americans like to employ expressions from sports journalism (‘ballpark figure’, ‘the whole ten yards’) or from military jargon. They use a lot of idiomatic expressions, yet they are not always aware that they are doing it.
TRAVEL
The USA is very strict in enforcing applicable immigration laws for travelers. Visitors must be in full compliance with the appropriate rules and regulations associated with their countries of origin.
Global Entry Status allows for faster passage through Immigration upon arrival in the USA.
Citizens of all other countries are required to obtain a visa in order to enter the US. International trade show organisers usually provide a visa section on their show website from which supporting documents, such as invitation letters, can be downloaded.
The concept of Transit Passengers is unknown in U.S. airports. When arriving on an international flight and continuing on a domestic flight, visitors will have to process through Immigration and collect their luggage – only to check in again for the onward flight. Those passing through the USA to another country will again have to proceed through Immigration.
Security is taken very seriously and travelers need to be prepared for intensive security checks at every airport. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) check is very thorough. Travelers should avoid making the security process or rules the subject of jokes, not with TSA, the airlines, in the airport environment, or anywhere. There is zero tolerance for this behavior and possibly severe consequences.
Travelers are not subjected to passport control when leaving the USA.
The United States has developed the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It allows citizens of specific countries to travel to the United States for tourism, business, or while in transit for up to 90 days without having to obtain a visa.
All passengers traveling to the US and who intend to take advantage of the Visa Waiver Program are required to apply for a travel authorisation through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) online before departure to the United States, preferably at least 72 hours in advance.
The USA is a huge country and most travel is usually accomplished via commercial airlines. There is efficient rail service and connections, particularly at the East and West Coasts and within major metropolitan areas.
It may not always be easy to get a taxi, but mobile apps for ride-share services, like Uber, have proven to be a very helpful option.
ETIQUETTE AND CUSTOMS IN THE USA
The business environment in the USA is very informal. The threshold to address people by their first name is very low. Address anybody formally and with title and they will let you know immediately when the conversation can become less formal. Americans may also
address their international colleagues by first name immediately after being introduced. This is not considered rude, but more of a reflection of the casual style of Americans.
Meet with a handshake and a look into the eye.
Avoid close physical contact and keep an arm’s length between you and the other person. A handshake is the standard for meeting and greeting a person. Don’t embrace, and don’t even consider trading kisses on the cheek (you’ll never get that far).
Humor is appreciated, as long as courtesy is applied.
Political correctness is observed in every aspect of public life and should be respected.
In a fine-dining restaurant, always wait to be seated. Cafés and luncheon diners are typically less formal.
Don’t consume alcoholic beverages in a public environment like a street or a park.
Service fees are not included in restaurant bills, taxi fares, porter services, etc. – a generous tip (between 10 and 20 %) is expected and actually is the major source of income for most service employees.
When shopping for any item, please be aware that the price tag on the commodity is not the final price. The cashier adds the local sales tax. This sales tax could be anything from zero (if you are lucky to acquire your purchases in New Hampshire or the other four states who do not have a sales tax program) to 13,50 percent in Alabama.
BUSINESS
The American Dream is very much alive. The belief that any individual can get wealthy by hard work is deeply anchored in society.
The workweek is Monday to Friday, ‘from Nine to Five’. It could also be 08:30 to 06:00, and long hours are common.
Traditionally, business is not conducted on Sundays as it is considered to be a day devoted by many to worship. Americans view business cards, although not always exchanged, as a source of information and they tend to exchange cards casually. There is
no set ritual for exchanging business cards.
Don’t be late for an appointment. This is considered disrespectful. Schedules and deadlines are standard in the American workplace and considered very important to avoid wasting time.
The dress code in business is relaxed and casual. At a first meeting, you may want to dress more formally. In subsequent meetings, you are safe to follow what your American business partners wear. Many American business professionals will inquire in advance about another company’s acceptable dress code prior to their visits. Please remember that business may be conducted in great heat and humidity and, in spite of the ever-present air conditioning, your attire should reasonably reflect the weather conditions.
Between appropriate small talk, getting across personality, and striking up a relationship, please always remember that 'time is money' and eventually it takes getting to the point. It is best to avoid topics like politics, religion, and personal matters.
During any gap in a conversation, don’t be surprised at how much attention will be applied to keeping some sort of small talk going. Participation during business meetings is considered quite important – staying quiet or having nothing to say can be looked upon as being unprepared or as having nothing to contribute.
The chain of command in an American corporate structure is very much observed. The flexibility and freedom of an individual to make his or her own decisions is very limited and controlled. Normally, strict rules and regulations apply to certain work processes and deviation could cause a person to lose his or her job.
Company policy plays a great role in decisionmaking and negotiating. There is a clear line drawn between management and subordinates.
In a business conversation, you will notice that the other person may be very direct. Disagreement is openly accepted. This conduct is not to be seen as unfriendly, but rather as a sign of efficiency and a way to maintain a fast pace in the dialogue. In many ways, American business etiquette clashes with other countries’ business cultures where differences are addressed only indirectly. Strong personal bonding in the U.S. is desired, and losing face is a big issue. t

E: gkeh@twigroup.com Mr. Greg Keh TWI GROUP,INTRODUCTION TO THE USA MARKET
The US Exhibitions Market “Is” A True International Market
Welcome to the United States and to a market that offers true diversity in industries, locations, and cultures. Venues in the US play host to exhibitions and conferences in every corner of the country from Miami, Florida in the southeast to Anchorage, Alaska nearly 5,000 miles away, and from Portland, Maine in the northeast to Honolulu, Hawaii, at an even further distance of 5,105 miles. Each of the 50 states offers various convention facilities to fit the needs of every industry, with the busiest and largest convention centers located in Las Vegas, Orlando, and Chicago. Chicago’s McCormick Place is the largest facility at 2.6 million square feet. The venues are situated in a wide range of culturally diverse settings from fast-paced, big cites like New York to rural settings at country fairgrounds. Exhibition venues are often found at the centers of international language, entertainment, and food.
Industry Background
The USA trade show industry is a substantial component of the US economy. Exhibitions and trade shows in the USA are the meeting points of their respective industries. Trade shows in the US can be characterized in a number of ways:
• The US accounts for over 20% of the world’s exhibition space and hosts over 40% of all exhibitions and trade shows in the world.
• While the majority of US exhibitions focus on the US domestic market, international participation is growing year over year.
• While trade fairs in Europe developed from markets, trade shows in the USA developed from the meetings of salesmen traveling around the country.
• The majority of visitors that attend trade shows in the USA come from the USA or neighboring countries.
• Trade associations are responsible for organising the largest exhibitions and trade shows in the US.
• The average duration of trade shows in the USA is often shorter than, for example, in Europe. In contrast to European countries, stand building and design in the USA tends to be less relevant.
• The US trade show market is expected to increase at a high growth rate during the period 20182021. The US trade show market is supported by various growth drivers, including high GDP growth in the US, digitization of trade shows, and increasing net square footage, etc.
From an export point of view, the US market represents endless market opportunities. Less than 1% of the 30 million registered companies based in the United States export their products or services to other countries. Many of them export to only one country, primarily Canada and/or Mexico. As a result, all major global exhibition organisers have representatives, fully operational offices, or agents in the US to support sales for their overseas shows. t
Singularities and must-know procedures
Ports of Entry
It can be challenging to determine the most appropriate airport or seaport to use for a show in the United States. While some may be obvious, such as using the port of Long Beach for a show taking place in Los Angeles, it might be more difficult to select the best port for shipping an ocean container to an event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In recent years, hurricanes, blizzards, and torrential rains have caused exhibitions to be delayed or canceled, requiring forwarders to make new or different port choices.
Ocean Shipping
With ocean shipping, especially with full containers, freight forwarders should plan to ship earlier that normal to overcome delays due to weather or schedule slippage. However, there is also the chance for containers to be sent for Customs exam, and this can not only lead to delays, but also to additional port storage charges. Shipping to a show’s advance warehouse (if one is provided) is a good plan, but additional handling costs from the general contractor will apply.
The General Services Contractor –Drayage
Unlike in most other countries, where many different vendors to the exhibition industry provide their services as individual service providers, in the USA the general services contractor has the lead role in the production of a trade show. They are a partner and exclusive provider to show
management. Within that partnership, the general services contractor provides services that include furniture rental, booth space, and shell schemes, as well as full-fledged display house services, signage, carpet, displays and ‘material handling’ services. The latter is a package of offerings that includes the unloading and reloading of trucks and containers, handling and storage of empty packaging material, accessing storage, and providing forklifts and laborers, etc. Material handling services are traditionally offered by IELA Members elsewhere in the world.
Marshaling Yards
Depending on the location of a convention center, the size of the show, and expected volume of display material, audio-visual equipment, and exhibits, the general contractor may install a marshaling yard. This yard serves as the check-in location for trucks before the delivery to a respective exhibitor’s booth. The marshaling yard also serves as ‘proof of delivery’ to adhere to the targeted move-in or move-out date. The purpose of the marshaling yard is to avoid congestion at the convention center or loading docks caused by uncoordinated traffic. Depending on the size of the show and location, multiple waiting hours can be incurred, sometimes increasing delivery costs significantly.
Targeted Move-In and Move-out
Most larger exhibitions and trade shows, especially with big and voluminous exhibits, are ‘targeted’. That means, depending on the booth location, the delivery date (move-in) and pick-up date (move-out) of an exhibitor’s exhibit is also regulated and set by the
general contractor in cooperation with the organiser. Delivering or picking up exhibits before or after the set date may result in heavy penalties, therefore knowing the actual date is vital for the logistics provider to reduce costs for the exhibitor.
Forced Freight
At many of the events in the US, the contractor has a limited amount of time to remove all freight from the venue at the close of the exhibition. If the exhibitor’s preferred agent or carrier fails to collect the shipment in time, the contractor may move the shipment to its designated warehouse and charge the exhibitor a fee for this service. Often, this “forced” removal happens when the bill of lading (also referred to as a material handling agreement) for the trucking company is either completed incorrectly or not at all. The problem can usually be avoided by completing the form on behalf of the exhibitor or making sure the exhibitor lists the correct carrier information and “ship to” address on the form.
New Truck Regulations
Starting in 2018, all over-the-road drivers must log their hours digitally. This limits the amount of time that carriers can be in operation. As a result, a local agent may need more time to move freight from one location to another. This requirement has led to an increase in carriers needing to book team drivers to make it to a destination on time. It has also caused a shortage of drivers, which has driven up costs.
Types of Entries
The types of exhibit materials, intended use, and ultimate disposition of imported goods determines the type of entry to file with Customs. There are many options, and like most countries, the most common entry types are consumption entries, temporary import bonds (TIB), and ATA Carnets. A TIB is usually good for up to one year, and this is true with ATA Carnets as well, but both have very specific restrictions associated with them.
Early Planning – Communication
The best way to handle any shipment to the US is to plan as early as possible. Of course, many exhibitors do not tender shipments with adequate time, or they have last minute requests. However, doing as much research about the show or venue helps forwarders and exhibitors plan shipments appropriately.
Exhibition and Conventions Centers –Union Buildings
Most major venues in the US operate with a union labor force to protect local jobs. As a result, some activities that exhibitors would typically execute themselves are prohibited.
Although every organiser allows Exhibitor Appointed Contractors (EAC’s), the union will police labor activity, and it is not uncommon for an exhibitor to receive warnings about improper conduct, after which they can be instantly closed down causing delays and stress.
It may be advisable to overseas exhibitors, who intend to perform their own labor at their booth including stand building, electrical work, etc., to include 1-2 hired laborers from the general contractor to support their booth work.

The growth of the business-to-business (B2B) exhibition industry accelerated along with the macro economy in 2017. The Total Index, a measure of overall exhibition industry performance, increased by a moderate 2.0%, 1.0 percentage point higher than in 2016. All four metrics rose in 2017, with real revenues leading at 2.9% above 2016. Attendees and net square feet (NSF) rose 2.1% and 2.0%, respectively, whereas exhibitors gained 1.1%.

THREE WAY LOGISTICS www.3waytradeshows.com
Exhibition developments in 2017 varied widely by industry. The leading sector was Industrial/Heavy Machinery and Finished Business Inputs (ID), surging 8.1%. Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services (CS); Building, Construction, Home & Repair (HM); and Food (FD) also had strong showings, each rising by over 4.0%. On the other end of the spectrum, the weakest sector was Education (ED), in which the index declined by 2.2%. Sporting Goods, Travel and Amusement (ST) was the second weakest sector, dropping 0.3%.
TRANSIT AIR CARGO, INC. www.transitair.com

BredenOptimism in the business environment and robust economic and job growth should continue to drive exhibitions. CEIR expects the exhibition industry to finally enter into an expansion phase in 2018 with the Total Index surpassing its previous peak. A stabilizing ED sector and a rebounding ST sector combined with continued robust exhibitions in the CS, FD, ID and HM sectors should help to push the overall CEIR Index growth to 2.5%, 0.5 percentage points higher than the 2017 rate but still 0.4 percentage points lower than real
GDP growth. Exhibition performance will slow modestly to 2.2% in 2019 and 2.0% in 2020 as the economy settles into a slower but more sustainable growth path.
After substantial declines during the Great Recession, real revenues have been the strongest metric since 2011. Nonetheless, the CEIR real revenues index registered 110.9 in 2017 (2014=100), still about 3.0% lower than the pre-recession peak of 114.4 in 2007. A relatively strong recovery should continue through 2020, in part reflecting higher revenue per NSF.
Expansion of household discretionary expenditures, residential spending and business fixed investment should help the CS, FD, ID and HM sectors achieve the highest growth, ranging from 3.6% to 4.7% in 2018 and remaining above 3% in both 2019 and 2020. The outlook for Education (ED); Consumer Goods and Retail Trade (CG); and Business Services (BZ) exhibitions remains somewhat pessimistic. The ED sector has been on a secular decline for well over a decade. While some stabilization is expected as state and local government spending increases, ED sector growth is limited to about 0.1% per year for the 2018 to 2020 period. The CG sector is also on a secular declining trend. The impact of employment gains, rising wages and growing disposable income on CG-related exhibitions has been relatively muted. The CG sector is forecast to expand by only 0.6% per annum over next three years. t

Success in a Male Dominated Industry
Women in exhibition logistics share their thoughts
In an industry that employs more men than women, it can be hard to be noticed if you’re in the minority. Well, in the IELA Family there are great women who have distinguished themselves in a logistics world dominated by men.
In the occasion of the 2018 International Women’s Day, we asked some female leaders questions about their experiences.
Logistics in Work and Life
Imagine a woman in her kitchen preparing to cook a special meal for her guests. The first thing she has to do is understand the recipe correctly Next, she has to consider the preferences of her guests and check whether there is anyone among them who is unable to eat her food due to some issues related to health or religion. Then, she has to go to the market and buy the necessary ingredients in the correct amounts and at reasonable prices. Putting everything together and creating something new and beautiful is the most important and toughest part. While doing all of this, she has to be calm, clear-minded, focused, and quick! Any interference from outside, like a long telephone call or a friend stopping by, can spoil the entire process. She not only has to think of all the details (collecting the spices with one hand and stirring the pot with the other), but she also has to imagine the entire picture at the end, pay attention to the timing, and avoid big mistakes. Once she gets done and serves the meal after several hours of effort, her only satisfaction is seeing the pleasure on her guests’ faces, nothing else!
Does this process remind you of something that you do everyday? LOGISTICS is indeed a vital part of a woman’s life, when running a house or raising a child. A woman is a natural logistics expert as she gains all the skills that our industry requires when she performs her daily work.
I have been in the logistics business for 25 years. For the first 10 years, I believed that I was doing a superior job in a man’s world and therefore I was deserving of appreciation. This mood created a tough woman trying to be powerful at all times, like a second personality living in my body. It caused me to spend a great amount of effort to hide my feminine emotions
while performing my job. By the time I was 40, I was exhausted by trying to be a different person and started to look for ways to transform my experience. I finally came to understand that I do love finding solutions to practical problems even in my daily life and it was almost a natural instinct for me! So it did not take long for me to understand that I will never be able to get rid of logistics in my life! Logistics totally fits my view of life; it gives me great pleasure to bring small pieces together to create a big picture and to find solutions for my customers! And their satisfaction is my happiness at the end of the day, just like the cooking woman in my story.
Today, I have been running my own company for ten years. And every day I feel so happy being a woman in the Logistics World, able to be strong and emotional at the same time. I feel that my brain and heart are in great harmony when solving a problem or making an important decision, which I believe keeps me alive.
My advice to my female colleagues in logistics: Be yourself ladies. Be a complete woman and trust your skills. The top of the hill is not that far! t
Alexandra Erdmann
First of all, I feel honoured being CEO of SWISS EXPO LOGISTICS LTD. It is not very common to have women in leadership positions in the logistics industry. I hope this will change in the near future. I still feel like it's quite tough for women to manage and lead a company successfully, travel abroad, and have time with their families. t
Mariane Ewbank
Tijen Ozer
It is hard and great at the same time. It’s worth the journey. Overcoming the numerous challenges that we face every day makes us stronger and more creative in finding ways to conquer our space in the industry. I love going to show sites leading my 100% male operations team, coordinating the movements of huge machines, and “driving" my own pallet jack and tools. Men usually occupy the key positions in the military and customs. When they see me in the same room giving opinions and making my points on the same level as them, firstly they get surprised and at the end I get their respect. t
What is it like being a woman in a high level management position in the exhibitions logistics industry?
Tania Khodayar
Flores
The management itself is quite complex whether for women or men. The industry of transport & logistics becomes more difficult when you are a woman and even quite challenging. It seems that logistics was meant to be exclusively for men and women's opinions had less impact.
It is interesting because the industry is characterised by immense diversity in the types of businesses and jobs, however this diversity currently doesn’t translate to the workforce demographics, especially in management positions. From my own personal experience, I would say less than 2 out of 10 management positions in the industry are held by women nowadays t
The simple answer is: I’m constantly learning. The ins and outs of being in my position require close interactions with a variety of experiences across race, gender, and age demographics. These interactions are invaluable.
I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time, and it’s a gift to be able to carry these lessons with me into the rest of my career. Of course, as a young woman, positions of leadership are exponentially more difficult to function in, simply because of my age and gender. I’ve taken many hits from my older, male counterparts who disagree with me or hold different values.
I have to work twice as hard as my male peers to gain the same amount of respect. The intellectual, mental, and emotional labour I exert every day in my position are simply a part of the job description. t
Mary Ellen Stuart
It is a very exciting time to be in this career. There are no limits for women to have important roles in shaping the future of the logistics industry, particularly in the specialty of trade show shipping. Many emerging markets are aimed at women, so women are well-suited to understand the particulars of these products and services. We can assist the exhibitors with getting their products to the international marketplace in a way that allows them to make the best impact on their growth and development. t
Sandi Trotter
Many people actually thought my husband owned the company and that I was just working for him. They would approach him with questions and he would say, 'Go and talk to the boss. She pays my salary'. In reality, he came in as a shareholder and had his own business, but I was the one running EF-GSM. People couldn’t comprehend that I was the one who started and managed all aspects of the company. t
Jaqui Nel
Having been in the logistics industry for 25 years, I have seen many positive changes for women in our industry. When I started, women in positions of power were few and far between. As an example, my first IELA conference was in Las Vegas in 2002 and I was one of very few (less than 5?) female delegates. I was very surprised at how male dominated our business was even after the New Millennium. Female role models and trailblazers were almost non-existent in our field. Our industry, as with many others, was created, built and grown by our male counterparts over many years. Over the last 15 years, a very short amount of time, we have made great strides and we are seeing more and more women joining us and becoming engaged and taking on prominent roles. t
Strength in Inclusion
Jacqui Nel with Exhibition Freighting GSM shared her thoughts with Event, a South African business event magazine, about how diversity within the team/labour force helped her to achieve success. She believes embracing diversity is going to play a key role in ensuring her business stays at the forefront of the industry.
Jacqui Nel has been in the shipping industry for 37 years, 25 years of which have focused on the exhibition industry. Jacqui started Exhibition Freighting in 2002, and her husband Clive joined her as Onsite Director.
‘It’s very challenging for anybody who’s discriminated against, regardless of whether you’re a woman, a person of a different culture, or a very talented young person, as you have to work 100 times harder than anybody else to prove your worth, and even then that may not be good enough. The lesson is that you need to persevere, because at some point in time you will come out of this journey a better and wiser person that can invest into other people’s lives’, said Jacqui during the interview.
‘As a South African company, it only makes sense that our business seek to embrace diversity in its workforce’
‘With diversity comes creativity, which is vital for any business to survive in our ever changing times. We have to be able to listen and learn from each other’, she adds.
Her advice for those who face discrimination in the workplace?
‘We all have so much to contribute. Be bold and have a voice. Speak up for what you believe in and learn from other people when you’re unsure’
She is glad to present her team: Thula Khumalo and Denver Crouster
Thula Khumalo recently joined Exhibition Freighting as an Ops Controller, as he comes from an operations background. He started in the freighting industry and has quickly gained a wealth of industry knowledge within the exhibition sector too. Thula is the new face for onsite operations.
Denver began by providing casual staff to the exhibition and conference industry. He joined the company in 2014 and started an “earn as you learn” programme to help uplift disadvantaged communities and train the people in his community on handling cargo.
WHY YOU NEED A PEOPLE STRATEGY!
How to avoid losing the race for top talent
Stefan Dietz
Many companies focus on technology and their market strategy. This was the source of success yesterday. Tomorrow, that won´t be enough. The key to tomorrow´s success is the quality, identification, and motivation of your team. A new IELA webinar, ‘Why You Need a People Strategy’!, with leadership expert Stefan Dietz provides a very good start. Here is a sample:
You have to answer similar questions when marketing for talent as you do when marketing for customers:
• What kind of people are we looking for? How many of them?
• Is the company really attractive from the point of view of a potential employee?
• What is the perception of our company from the outside? What is the experience people have when getting to know us and applying for a job?
• Where can we get in contact with desirable employees?
• How can we attract good employees earlier than our competitors?
• How can we stay in contact with good potential employees and reach out when there is a job opening in the company?
If there is a single message for companies, it is to understand the labour market has changed. You have to focus on the people side of your business and develop your people strategy.
If you were unable to attend the webinar, don’t worry. You can view it any time in the Private Zone (members only) on the IELA website. Invite a colleague to watch it with you.
The author: Stefan Dietz consults on labour market development, employer attractiveness, personnel development and leadership, and everything you need to develop your people strategy. He´s Founder and CEO of the consulting company “entra” (www.entra-beratung.de) and provides his expertise as a speaker (www.stefandietz.com).
During IELA’s 2017 Prague Summit, I had the pleasure of educating delegates on the energy, enthusiasm, and compassion of Generation Z. I explained how this group of individuals “knows that they can't know it all,” a belief that is supported by The Law of Diminishing Relative Knowledge, which states that although the total amount of knowledge in the world has grown exponentially since the Enlightenment (Mid 1700s), the ability of people to absorb and store this knowledge has not kept pace. Zs know how to work around this impediment.
Some people believe that in his day, Leonardo da Vinci had quite a comprehensive overview of all available scientific knowledge; he had it all stored in his head. That would be completely inconceivable nowadays; even genius Nobel prizewinners just hold a tiny fraction of all available knowledge in their heads. Another example is the total number of web addresses (URLs) available to us. What started with a single website in 1991 (info.cern.ch) grew into one billion websites in 2016 and is expected to reach 1,6 billion in 2018. Nobody will ever be able to read all these pages, let alone understand them or remember them.
Generation Z is growing up in this knowledge-saturated world and has no trouble adapting to it. Zs are afloat on the limitless ocean of knowledge, and feel quite at home there. The knowledge gap doesn’t stress them out. That’s why Generation Z is a generation of ‘finders’ and ‘grazers’ rather than ‘knowers’ and ‘rememberers’. With a limitless amount of information available, it seems impossible to add even more knowledge that has to be absorbed and processed. Zs instinctively know this and don’t even try to keep up. If they need anything, they know where to find it.
Since we (René Boender and Jos Ahlers) first started to poll Generation Zs, several icons have passed away. Remarkably, the
René BoenderHUMANS MEET TECHNOLOGY: GENERATION Z KNOWS IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW IT ALL
online searches Zs conducted weren’t just aimed at finding out about contemporary heroes or artists, such as Amy Winehouse. Particularly, the older icons attracted massive online attention. Steve Jobs (October 5, 2011), Nelson Mandela (December 5, 2013), and David Bowie (January 10, 2016) jumped to the top of the search lists.
Large numbers of Gen Zs listened to Bowie’s music through iTunes. If Zs think something is important and want to be inspired, they know how to find what they need, always and anywhere. What did the Zs find when they googled Steve Jobs? This is what they saw, his final words:
I have come to the pinnacle of success in business.
In the eyes of others, my life has been the symbol of success. However, apart from work, I have little joy.
Finally, my wealth is simply a fact to which I am accustomed.
At this time, lying on the hospital bed and remembering all my life, I realize that all the accolades and riches of which I was once so proud, have become insignificant with my imminent death.
In the dark, when I look at green lights, of the equipment for artificial respiration and feel the buzz of their mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of my approaching death looming over me.
Only now do I understand that once you accumulate enough money for the rest of your life, you have to pursue objectives that are not related to wealth.
It should be something more important: For example, stories of love, art, dreams of my childhood.
No, stop pursuing wealth, it can only make a person into a twisted being, just like me.
God has made us one way, we can feel the love in the heart of each of us, and not illusions built by fame or money, like I made in my life; I cannot take them with me.
I can only take with me the memories that were strengthened by love.
This is the true wealth that will follow you; will accompany you, he will give strength and light to go ahead.
Love can travel thousands of miles and so life has no limits. Move to where you want to go. Strive to reach the goals you want to achieve. Everything is in your heart and in your hands.
What is the world's most expensive bed? The hospital bed.
You, if you have money, you can hire someone to drive your car, but you cannot hire someone to take your illness that is killing you.
Material things lost can be found. But one thing you can never find when you lose it: life.
Whatever stage of life we are at right now, at the end we will have to face the day when the curtain falls.
Please treasure your family love, love for your spouse, love for your friends.
Treat everyone well and stay friendly with your neighbors.
Steve JobsSo, make yourself heard! Let's use technology to meet all the people around the globe! Gen Z is event driven. The only thing you have to do is showcase your service and smile...Gen Z loves energetic events! t
‘I personally find it very important that every company has a representative in one or more working groups. WGs are very important to develop the future of IELA and every member should be a part of all the changes that IELA is making. I personally am part of the Standards & Customs WG as it is the one group that interests me the most as I deal with all the customs procedures in Finland’. t

‘The Working Groups in IELA are like the moving parts of a body and they help us to move forward as an organisation. They are important tools to follow the market trends and to understand where we stand. Personally, being a part of a Working Group offers me a vision to perform my job in a better way. And interacting with other members as a team shows me that I am not alone. It gives me the confidence to go forward‘. t

In Ireland, we take every opportunity to highlight the benefits of working with an IELA member to the various stakeholders and this is really paying off. ‘The Industry Relations Working Group (“IRWG”) is a very important part of IELA, as the members of this group are very much the ambassadors for our industry. IELA, as a body of professional exhibition logisticians, can gain better recognition for the work we do vis-à-vis the general forwarders who are encroaching into our domain. We have come a long way in getting many MOUs with key industry associations, but this is just the first step. More important is how to build on the relationships and be recognised for what we are and capable of as IELA members. I would like to encourage more members to join the IRWG to improve our standing as exhibition professionals’. t

The objective of our working group is to enhance knowledge and spread awareness of selected topics, which are relevant for IELA members. Training and education is relevant in day-to-day activities, which helps everyone to improve their knowledge and skills. My personal experience of teaching Winter Seminar students was memorable. Welcome to Everybody Interested in the Education and Training Working Group,
You might be wondering why I, as vice chairwoman, am writting the report. Achim Lotzwick this time is tied up with business and we took the decision that it will be me informing you about the work we have done these last months.
When I started writing this report, I tried to remember the reason why I chose to join the Education and Training Programme Working Group. We all sometimes struggle with finding new team members with the knowledge we wish them to have and this seems to be an issue around the globe. We could be the ones in the driver seat of our industry by being an example of how to train and educate people.
Within IELA, we have the perfect instruments to train our own staff. We could have an impact and develop the training program of IELA and make it fit to the requirements of today. Which is, in my opinion, something great.
How? Just be a part of the Training Working Group!
Since the last Congress, we discussed different topics like Webinars, IELA Academy, Operations Summit and we worked on a project called ‘Cultural Skills and Competence’, in which we try to explain Dos and Don’ts when visiting a particular country. In this report, you will find the country file for the USA.
For the actual report, we reviewed the IELA Training Manual (ITM). We wanted to be sure that in the fast-changing world of today that the ITM has remained current. We realized that some of us use other wordings for some descriptions of the work, but overall we agreed that the ITM is still consistent with the business practices of our Members and an important training tool for our industry.
The manual is available as a download in the Private Zone of IELA.org.
As a second project, we revisited the IELA Winter Seminar, which is a continuous action of our Working Group. The feedback of those in the Working Group who have sent staff to the Winter Seminar is positive.
In general, the content of the IELA Winter Seminar covers the main issues. There is always space for improvements and, like I mentioned in the beginning, let’s sit in the driver seat and let’s bring the IELA Winter Seminar to perfection as a training program, which is always up to date. That is a win-win for everybody. Therefore, we would like to take the opportunity during the Working Group session at the IELA Congress to develop some new ideas for improvement together with you. Any suggestions of subjects and lectures are welcome and could be discussed during our session in San Francisco.
Along with the IELA Winter Seminar, we also would like to talk about the webinars for 2018 – 2019. There are 12 webinars a year and we are looking forward to hearing from you about what kind of topics you are interested in or if you have a lecturer you would like to suggest.
I would like to thank all Working Group members for their support and I am looking forward to an interesting Working Group session in San Francisco. You are all welcome to join our session.
Regula
Dear IELA Members,
I hope you are all having a great and successful show time right now. Just before our annual Congress, I am pleased to inform you about the activities of our Think Tank WG. From the last report, written by Tania Khodayar, you have already learned in detail which topics we are currently working on in the Working Group.
We are in the process of completing the Organiser Portal, and you will learn more from us at the Congress in San Francisco.
Also, we are working very closely with the Secretariat on Millennial movement within our industry. You will see the results of the survey in San Francisco.
With full vigor, we are working on the Vendor Showcase. This is one of our main objectives, which we will continue to focus on until the Congress 2019 in Milan. We are still working on forming the team to head this project. We are convinced that we will have the team in place by the time we arrive in San Francisco. In the Vendor Showcase, various companies from different industries selected by us and the BOM receive the opportunity to present their services and products in Milan. Stay tuned!
I’m looking forward to seeing you all in San Francisco.
Cheers, Alexandra t

Dear IELA Members,
Well, it only seems like yesterday since Ravinder stepped down and I was asked to step up to the Chair of the MWG. Since then, it’s been a busy year for everyone within the group with each membership application being scrutinised prior to sending it to the BOM.
One important initiative this year was the setting up of a Task Force to look at every aspect of the membership process and, more importantly, to anticipate the future. IELA, like any organisation, has to evolve with the times in order to move forward. We are still reaching out to white spot countries and this focus is set to continue during the forthcoming year. During our discussions within the Task Force, we again focused on how best to achieve this objective.
If I am successful in staying on as Chair of the MWG, I would, at the meeting in San Francisco, like to focus on the subjects we discussed in the Task Force. There are a number of reasons for this, but I really see the benefit of opening the discussion to the group and obtaining their feedback. This is important to me going forward and we need to bring everyone on board in the discussion.
So, I look ahead to San Francisco with renewed vigour. The MWG has achieved a huge amount in the last 12 months and I hope that I can, with everyone’s support, help in moving the MWG forward. Therefore, this year I hope to present to the MWG the findings of the Task Force and get the feedback from the rest of the group. This can really be good or bad. I honestly don’t mind if people disagree. That’s as important as people agreeing.
For me, the setting up of the Task Force and the subsequent meetings was just the start. The work was never going to be achieved in just a few meetings. It will take time. It really is one step at a time. But now that we have started this, we must continue to drive matters forward and it’s at the MWG meeting in San Francisco where I hope we can do this.
I would ask everyone in the MWG and anyone who is thinking of joining us to be vocal. If you disagree, then say so. If you’ve got an idea, then put it forward. This is important and it’s also important that we all listen. Remember, just because we have always done it this way doesn’t make it right or appropriate in today’s world.
Hope to see you in San Francisco. Jeff t
WORKING GROUP
Dear Friends,
Not much time has passed since I was sitting at my kitchen table writing my article for the last IELA Report.
However, our group is constantly moving, sometimes a little faster and, during the peak season, a little slower. That is why this WG report is a little shorter than usual.
The Standards & Customs WG has been asked by the newly established Membership Task Force to develop some new questions on the work standards of potential new members. These questions should be part of a future new application procedure for new members. The WG is now brainstorming to get some positive results, which will help the Membership Task Force, BOM, and Secretariat to work out the new questionnaire.
Our WG is thrilled to be part of this procedure!
Other than that, we have been working on chasing the non-respondents of the IELA Standard Survey – again! Members of our WG could very well use their energy and time to do work for the WG other than sending emails and making phone calls to non-compliant IELA members.
More than 100 members had not even started to do their homework by the official closing deadline of the survey!
With our joint action we reduced the number to less than half by the beginning of April. The deadline for the close of the survey had to be rescheduled, which also means a lot of extra work for the Secretariat.
I would like to again appeal to all members to do their homework and complete the survey on time after the call for action sent by the Secretariat! It is no big deal, but it is your duty to respond to IELA and acknowledge the work done by your fellow IELA partners and friends!
For our meeting in San Francisco, we will prepare some new topics such as changes to the IELA Standards of Performance, significant changes to the IELA Survey, establishment of new databases and, hopefully, one or two new topics brought up by the members.
I would be thrilled to see you at our meeting in San Francisco on 23rd June 2018 and welcome you to be an active participant in our discussion.
See you soon in beautiful San Francisco, Dominique t

Dear Friends,
May and June are going to be key months for the Industry Relations Working Group: several important events are coming up and I'm very excited about being part of them. First, we’ll be involved in the Associations Committee at the UFI European Conference taking place in Verona, Italy, 2nd – 4th May. It is an honour to be the host country of this important, global event that will welcome over 150 leaders of the Exhibition World. Indeed, the most important venue owners and event organisers in the world will meet in Verona to discuss critical topics including Health & Safety, as well as Security and how to change events to answer to the challenges that the future holds.
Second, we’ll also be participating in the IEIA (Indian Exhibition Industry Association) Open Seminar, Hyderabad 9th – 11th May, which will be attended by more than 500 Exhibition industry professionals with around 100 international delegates from various countries. Mariane and I are so lucky to be invited to represent IELA. This is really a great opportunity for our Association to be connected to the most influential players in India. The Indian Exhibition Industry has by and large been on a year-on-year growth track for the past two decades. Thanks to favourable economic policies, booming corporate profitability, increasing numbers of youth, higher income and spending levels, and a whole lot of other economic and political parameters, the whole world is looking towards India as a potential market. IEIA is a great chance for IELA to be recognised as the leading group of companies and professionals in the Indian Market.
Last, but obviously not least, IELA is meeting in San Francisco in June. I can’t wait to see all of you again and update you on the exciting news from the last few weeks, as well as with our future projects! After having the
opportunity to meet a number of new and young colleagues in the recent congresses (at the Zurich Winter Seminar and, later, in Hong Kong for the Operations Summit), I really hope that the newcomers will participate in the June meeting and give their precious contribution to the very lively and enthusiastic working sessions for all our groups.
Finally, I remember when I first participated in an IELA meeting. I was only 30 and I met great people who helped me grow in this job, particularly in the WG I actually chair: (Big) Steve Barry, Phil Powell, Ole Dyrhauge (just to name a few). I thank them for the experience they passed on to me. Now it’s my turn to give back and I cannot wait. The Vice Chair position in the Industry Relations Working Group is vacant. This is an interesting position for someone who wants to enhance his or her career and
participate in our Association’s growth. I’m proud to share what Priscilla recently said about the Industry Relations Working Group: we are the ambassadors for our industry, with closer engagement with country, regional or global industry associations, so… Come on, step forward and join in our wonderful Association life!!
