IELA REPORT Magazine - Edition 91 - Autumn 2019

The IELA Congress in Venice has left many pleasant memories. ‘Kudos’ to our Secretariat for working very hard and providing us with these wonderful experiences during networking activities and knowledge enhancing programmes. It also provided us with the opportunity of learning further in some areas, which the IELA Board took cognisance of and will be addressed in the future.

I welcome Priscilla Leong and Sandi Trotter to the Board. We now have 3 women leaders among 9 on the IELA Board

Priscilla took over as the new IELA Treasurer in Venice and, just as I write, the IELA Board has appointed Jim Kelty as the new IELA Vice Chairman

We also have new leaders in the IELA Working Groups:

I welcome all these leaders and thank them for volunteering for IELA work.

On the global industry level, IELA will be represented at the 86th UFI Global Congress and IAEE Expo! Expo! 2019 by Elizabeth and myself. As IELA Chairman, I will also be attending the Event Industry Council (EIC) meeting in November.

In an effort to increase engagement with global associations earlier this month, Elizabeth had discussions at UFI’s Paris Headquater on various possibilities of working together. In addition, UFI has given IELA representation on its Operations and Services Working Group and in its meeting this month, IELA was represented by Guido Fornelli

IELA has also initiated dialogue with UFI and the German Messe on the challenges being faced due to GDPR implications on sharing Exhibitor Lists . I thank Mariane, Ravinder, Christoph and other Board Members for their continued efforts to build consensus with organisers on a possible solution which of course would bring in added responsibilities on individual IELA Members (and their agents) to build security protocols in their systems and operations.

We are now preparing for IELA Connect 2019 at Marrakech where the ‘IELA Sustainability Guidelines’ will be launched. These Guidelines were primarily architected by Jacqui Nel and comprehensively supported by Priscilla & Elizabeth are another demonstration of IELA’s commitment to become the knowledge resource and reference for the exhibitions industry. Our women leadership has shown its prowess once again. I was privileged and fortunate to have worked with them on this project.

On the Education & Training front, plans for the IELA Operations Summit 2020 are well on the way for making it another memorable opportunity for learning and networking.

The Board is presently engaged in addressing some of the issues relating to IELA’s Articles and By Laws with the intention to present the new version for adoption at the General Assembly in Limpopo, South Africa

As IELA’s work in progress continues, I would like to thank the entire Board for all their volunteer work and time. I am personally honoured to work with such leaders showing diversity in thought & expression, and sometimes differences too. But, always with commitment, they maintain a continued focus on making IELA stronger and on giving its members increased benefits which can assist them in becoming even more successful. t

SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL MOMENT REQUIRING ELITE’S EXPERTISE

For the first time in history, four lifesized warriors, a bronze chariot set and other artifacts from the astounding Terracotta Army in Xi’an, China have been transferred to Thailand. ELITE was contracted to handle the move from start to finish. Their team flew to Xi’an to conduct a thorough condition report for all exhibition pieces with Chinese curators. They then escorted them all the way to Bangkok. ELITE took care of all domestic processes to move them to the museum. Finally, they worked with Chinese curators to unpack and install all items into position. In December, it will be ELITE who will once more move these magnificent figures back home to Xi’an. t

UNIQUE INDYCAR RACING TROPHY HANDLED BY GLOBAL EXPO SERVICES

The Borg Warner Trophy features the image of every Indianapolis 500 winner dating back to 1911, weighs about 70kgs, stands at 1.70m and is valued at US $3.5 million. The Indianapolis 500 is part of the IndyCar championship, the US equivalent of Formula One racing.

HOLLYWOOD MOVED TO ESTONIA BY UPEX

The Warner Bros. Film Studios shot a new film entitled Tenet in Tallinn, Estonia in June and July of this year. This year, the African Games were held from August 19th to 31 st for the first time in Rabat, Morocco.

Doing their part within the community means a lot to EF-GSM. To date, they have selected a number of projects to support in the area. It was recently Mandela Day so following in the spirit of this internationallyrecognised day to encourage global support and solidarity, it was important for EF-GSM to give a helping hand to a small school in their area.

The children are from less privileged backgrounds and often come to school

without warm clothing even when it’s cold outside.

The school made such an impact on the team that they took them on as an on-going project.

What is your feedback having attended the 2019 IELA Congress & Partnering Event?

It was so exciting that the IELA team made it possible, in such short notice, for us to participate at the Congress and Partnering Event at Venice. I would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the IELA team for its efforts.

The Congress and Partnering Event are very useful for all participants as it is a platform to find new agents and is also a good opportunity to meet up with good friends/agents with whom we might have worked for many years but have never met.

The IELA Forum-Think Campus - moving from a product-focused to a customer-centric perspective - was personally the most interesting section. The different viewpoints from partners working together and the expectations from their logistics service provider for “On Time Delivery” was very interesting. We all learned from this session that having trained and professional staff is most important in an organisation. Working in partnerships should profit from a win-win basis

There was the IELA Forum-Stream to Action and I attended Stream 2: Stress Management. As an Exhibition Service Provider, we have a lot of stress from external sources such as customs clearance, shipment vessels or delayed flights. It is important to learn how to reduce Stress. The speaker Maria Rosa Rocco gave us methods to release or reduce stress which is very useful.

We would finally like to thank all members who voted for Taiwan as the location of the 2021 Congress and Partnering Event. We look forward to seeing all of you in Taipei in 2021. t

This year, we dived into the deep ocean of Human Potential with the objective to inspire, empower and encourage the network.

The 2019 IELA FORUM was opened by speakers who provided new insights from the Social- and Neuroscience perspective. Our BREAKFAST BRAINS and STREAM TO ACTIONS sessions gave us “food for thought” and tools were identified in the quest towards personal empowerment and inspiration. Our THINK CAMPUS offered a unique platform for our customers to tell us their perspective and needs when working with us.

We achieved our foremost goal in creating an environment in which a long-term culture of transformation could be nourished and then unfolded.

The Working Groups were filled with energy. The focus was on each staff member who holds the key to transforming goals into reality. For IELA and its members, autonomy and challenge are components to maintain job satisfaction and the retention of talent in our organisations.

We would like to thank all speakers, moderators and participants for their unique input, commitment and enthusiasm which made this year’s event unforgettable and highly inspiring.

The 34th IELA General Assembly took place on Friday June 24th. The event was opened by our Master of Ceremonies, Sandi Trotter. We would like to thank her for taking on this important role again this year. Thank you Sandi!

Guido Fornelli was appointed Secretary of the General Assembly and assumed his responsibilities.

Vicki Bedi, IELA 2018-2020 Chairman, presented his Chairman Report, reporting on the activities of the Board and the development of IELA since the last General Assembly in San Francisco. He also presented this year’s achievements.

During the General Assembly, two new IELA Committee members were elected: Greg Keh, COO of TWI Group Inc., USA and Ravinder Sethi, Managing Director of R.E. Rogers India Pvt. Ltd., India.

The Committee is composed of three members. Last year, Markus Eichenberger, from BTG Suisse Ltd., Switzerland, was re-elected and remains in the Committee for an additional year.

The first meeting of the Committee took place the same day of the elections and Ravinder Sethi was appointed as Chairperson of the IELA Committee.

The date of the next annual General Assembly was then announced. It will take place on June 28th 2020 during IELA’s 35th Congress in Limpopo, South Africa

Within the IELA structure, the Board of Management is responsible for all aspects ranging from strategy-building to execution, having the widest powers to perform all functions concerning day-to-day management.

The Committee in IELA’s control body as is responsible for verifying and preparing:

a) the decisions of the Board are in accordance with the provisions of these Articles;

b) the financial status of IELA keeps in line with the principles established by the General Assembly;

c) the accounts of IELA are held in a true and faithful way, in accordance with the generally accepted accounting principles, and

d) the list of the candidates standing for the elections to be organised by the General Assembly Meeting. t

The Working Groups are formed by volunteers and dedicated exhibition logistics professionals. They give their personal time to get engaged in our association. The most vital source of development for IELA comes from its five Working Groups.

The members are active all year long based in their respective offices, but once a year, they meet during the IELA Congress and agree on their projects and actions for the coming year.

The Membership WG is actively looking for interested members in white spot countries. As the next congress is taking place in South Africa, it is apt that we should be looking at filling white spot areas on the African continent. Another major area would be the Middle East (other than the UAE). Recommendations from IELA Members are most welcome. t

The Think Tank WG aims to be an integral part of the solution for IELA Members’ issues by bringing new ideas to life that can change existing IELA Processes.

2018 IELA Standards of Performance Award Winners revealed in Venice

ELA’s annual Standards of Performance Awards recognise the winners of the IELA Standards of Performance Survey.

It is the benchmarking tool all IELA Members use to evaluate the performance of their counterpart domestic and export agents within IELA’s worldwide network.

This year, a new category, Best ONSITE Agent, has been added to the Best DOMESTIC and Best EXPORT Agent categories. The top two performers in each categories have been announced and rewarded during the IELA 34th Gala Dinner & Award Night in Venice on June 25th 2019.

IELA: How did you get involved in the industry in the first place?

Naz: I have always loved animals and after graduation I first started working as a show presenter in the Singapore Zoo.

An ex colleague of mine reached out and asked if I would like to try something ‘exciting, challenging and new’ and so, here I am! What I enjoy most is the excitement of meeting timelines, the challenge of fixing any possible situations that might arise and satisfaction from the faces of happy customers. I think it is important to always be passionate and enjoy what you do.

How did you get involved in this industry in the first place?

Matthias: Personally, after completing my training as a forwarding agent in 1989, I applied for a job advertisement as an exhibition logistics specialist in a major freight forwarding company. I was 21 years old and had no exact idea of what to expect as an international exhibition logistics expert. But from the beginning I was fascinated by the adventure of getting to know many countries and cultures and taking on a great responsibility as a young person. My love for this industry has therefore been going on for 30 years.

As for PANEXPO, the company was founded in 1996 as a specialised company for trade fair and event logistics. The team already had many years of experience and excellent contacts in this sector.

IELA: Why do you think your company was elected by your counterparts as Best Export Agent?

Matthias: Our team is very active, prompt in replying to agents and works in a very professional and high quality way. We are very friendly and fair with agents. Our team is present on-site in all major venues and gives local operational support to partners. Last but not least, we pay our bills promptly and reliably.

IELA: What has IELA done for you?

Matthias: IELA Membership provides an excellent platform to intensify agent contacts, share experiences and benefit from members’ high quality standards. Naz: Winning a second award came as a complete surprise! We were not expecting this at all. Nevertheless, we count our blessings for the love, support and kindness that has been given to us. We are extremely grateful and thankful to be recognised for our work and performance. Once again, thank you dear partners and colleagues!

IELA: You have already reached top levels of performance in what you do. Is there in your opinion still room for improvement in your standards of performance?

Naz: There will always be room for improvement. It takes anywhere from years to decades to be great at what we do and this depends on the passion you have for the industry and an immense amount of hard work too. So we will always need to keep learning and improving.

An excellent turnout of IELA and non-IELA members was witnessed at the 34th IELA Congress & 8th Partnering Event in Venice which took place this year in exquisitely beautiful surroundings. It goes without saying that the annual IELA Partnering Event has now established itself as an essential conduit enabling preliminary interaction between IELA and non-IELA Members during the early stages of a non-member’s journey towards eventual IELA membership. We are now looking forward to the next Congress in South Africa in order to encourage dialogue between IELA and non-IELA members, opening up the next phase of their IELA journey.

The African continent has largely remained an unknown continent for exhibition freight forwarding for most IELA Members. With the exception of South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and, to a certain extent Morocco, the hidden potential of the African continent has not yet been discovered by most of us. Now is the time for the next IELA Congress and Partnering Event to be held on the African continent. This will pave the way for a largely white spot continent to be exposed to the IELA world.

The Membership Working Group is looking at filling white spot areas on the African continent. Potential IELA Members can only be identified by individual IELA Members who work with local companies in their day-to-day exhibition logistics activities. The act of sharing such sources, especially in white spot countries, goes a long way in allowing our members to reap the benefits of an IELA membership. As our members will want to explore new markets in Africa like Kenya, Ethiopia, the Ivory Coast, Tanzania and many more, recommendations from IELA Members are greatly welcomed.

IELA Members & the Membership WG are actively looking for membership potential in white spot countries . We encourage you to recommend African companies with whom you have existing working arrangements on the African continent. They can participate in the IELA Partnering Event in South Africa in 2020! This will be the best opportunity for our members to discover potential gems in the African exhibition logistics world.

Protecting Our People Special MENA & Western Africa Region

IELA will gather local stakeholders of the exhibition and event industry from the MENA and Western Africa Region to discuss, from the inside, about what is needed to be done in Security and Safety in the region in order to protect our people and set standards.

The role of local actors is fundamental. They know their market and environment and have a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of security standards. Following the presentation of the IELA Security Guidelines, the IELA Operational Health & Safety Guidelines and the IELA Sustainability Guidelines, the association stages a forum on-site for local actors in the industry to discuss best practices in Morocco. The subject for exchange and debate will be how the whole industry can implement higher standards of security to protect all staff involved in exhibitions at all stages of a project.

In its efforts to make a difference, IELA is committed to not only enforcing best practices in Exhibition Logistics and supporting the community of IELA Members, but also to inspiring and maximizing mutual actions in the exhibition and event industry.

Organisers, venue owners, local institutions and associations are invited to join the discussion table and engage in working together to reduce the element of risk for people working in the exhibition industry.

Why MENA?

As the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) states, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a diverse region, affected by economic and political transformations, but with a potential for added and more positive growth. It benefits from a privileged geographic location with access to large markets; a young and increasingly educated population and comparative advantages in several sectors such as manufacturing, renewable energies and tourism. MENA economies are implementing reforms to improve economic growth, governance structures, diversification, employment, private sector development and integrity.

In adherence with the commitments of IELA 2018-2020 Chairman, Vicki Bedi, in his first postelection editorial outlining primary goals, the expansion of IELA’s reach in until now unrepresented countries, and the enhancement of member benefits through increased regional and local level involvement, are fully targeted in these actions. t

Industry partner gives insights on the MENA Exhibition Industry

In order to intensify our efforts aimed at getting to know the Exhibition Industry better in the MENA Region, we contacted our industry partner representatives in the region. Mr. Albert Aoun, UFI MEA Chapter President and Chairman of IFP Group, kindly replied to a few questions.

IELA: How has the Middle Eastern market faired with recent social and political challenges in the region?

Mr. Aoun: The integration of smart technologies, political and economic incertitude, environmental and social challenges and changing customer behaviour, make remaining relevant on the market the biggest future challenge.

The exhibition industry in the Middle East has grown strongly over recent years: the market size in the GCC region alone is estimated at nearly one billion US dollars.

Training programmes using the latest technologies

Despite social and political issues in the Middle East, the economic impact of exhibitions has sustained steady growth with a projected increase of 9% in operating profits for 2019 (UFI Global Exhibition Barometer). A further increase is still expected. In 2019 a substantial market volume of 6,2 million visitors came to the region. A total economic impact translates into sales of € 2,4 billion ($ 2,8 billion) and 31.000 jobs supported by exhibitions.

IELA: What are the biggest challenges in subSaharan Africa for exhibitions?

Mr. Aoun: There are three significant challenges which influence market perceptions: the first being the need for a certain critical mass of exhibitors and visitors to build a valuable business platform.

The second is to find high-quality local service providers for logistics, sales and marketing. As the industry grows, quality will become more entrenched in the future. The third challenge for organisers is a lack of good infrastructure in certain areas. South Africa boasts however 0.7% of the total exhibition space worldwide. As the international association for exhibition logistics, IELA plays an important role and is working hard to raise the overall standards in our industry.

IELA: What positive aspects result from these challenges?

Mr. Aoun: Africa is often cited as a role model for pragmatic solutions in difficult situations and for a “can-do” spirit which reigns. While crisis and severe conditions still exist, some markets are fast-growing and among the most expansive in the world. Several exhibition centres have been built in the region, helping to build a strong events market.

The market is smaller than that of the Middle East, registering 2,1 million visitors to the region but the total economic impact translates into sales of € 0,94 billion ($ 1.11 billion). The exhibitions market currently supports 19.000 jobs.

IELA: Can you name some activities which UFI undertakes to support its members and growth in the region?

Mr. Aoun : UFI’s objective is to contribute to building markets and conducting much-needed research on exhibitions in the region. We are continually expanding our membership in the Middle East and in Africa with currently close to one hundred member companies, organised in the MEA Chapter. UFI supports its members in the region through the annual UFI Middle East Conference as well as through educational projects. We plan to hold the 2020 UFI Global Congress in Oman. Furthermore, there are currently 78 events approved by UFI in the region. These events put the focus on the region and also highlight the excellent exhibition facilities and services available in the Middle East to a global market.

IELA: What are the actual trends in exhibitions in the region?

Mr. Aoun: We see an emergence of niche shows, especially in the UAE. Although attracting smaller audiences, diversity grows overall market size. The economic situation in GCC continues to be volatile with current sanctions in Iran and Qatar impeding progress, but the Expo 2020 is generating interest and should attract heightened investment in the region over the next few years. Growth is seen in markets such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where infrastructure projects are underway. t

Mr. Bilal Al Barmawi , IAEE MENA Chapter Chairman and CEO of 1st Arabia Tradeshows & Conferences, will be participating at the table of discussion on Security and Safety and kindly replied to a few questions. Why collaboration is key?

IELA: Last March 2019, IAEE announced the creation of the IAEE - MENA Chapter, for which you have been named Chairman. Could you please give us an overview of the potential you see for the exhibition industry in the MENA Region?

Mr. Al Barmawi: The Establishment of an IAEEMENA Chapter will activate the exhibition and events industry in the region by increasing the number of members of the Middle East & North Africa, who are presently 51 members from 12 countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Qatar, Tunisia and Iraq.

It contributes to stimulating many vital sectors such as transportation, shipping and e-marketing services. It also enhances the occupancy of tourist accommodation facilities and supporting services, enables promotion of young professionals and women leadership by securing permanent and temporary jobs and creating new jobs. It is also central to attracting foreign capital to support investment projects, to exchange knowledge and successful experiences among countries.

IELA: What are the short-term and long-term goals of the regional Chapter? Which actions have been programmed?

Mr. Al Barmawi : The exhibitions and events industry is one of the important factors in economic growth which will encompass all countries in the Middle East and North Africa through industry-specific activities. There are training programmes using the latest

technologies and methods of managing opponents like the IAEE CEM exhibition management, an important international certificate for exhibition and event industry professionals. It is also planned that statistics on the Middle East and North Africa exhibition industry will be developed and included, as well as increasing the number of members of the association from this area with a view to attracting the Expo Expo! to be held in the Middle East.

IELA aims to develop its membership in the MENA Region. In your view, how could we join forces and work together for the good of the Industry?

Mr. Al Barmawi: As a Chairman of IAEE-MENA Chapter, I encourage this initiative. With my industry network and connections we can positively influence growth & development of IELA together in this region. I would like to wholeheartedly welcome & encourage the idea and I am glad to partner with IELA for the progress of our Industry. This can be achieved through a strategic partnership with IELA Members, specialised shipping companies and logistics services supporting the exhibition industry for the Middle East and North Africa. In this region, the industry is developing particularly rapidly and together with IELA, we can solve the challenges presented by regulations, laws and procedures. CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR DAY TO DAY WORK

10 YEARS

The best way to realise how your future daily work will be is to look back at how it was 10 years ago.

Just remember that 10 years ago a Blackberry was the standard smartphone in international business. The first version of Windows 7 was released. Barack Obama became president of the USA and the Finnish company Rovio Entertainment released the game Angry Birds. Additionally it was the year Michael Jackson died!

Think about your company and your work 10 years ago. I am sure that you had a fax machine in your office and that international phone calls were very expensive!

So just imagine what digitalisation will bring us in the next 10 years. Will there be a photocopier in your office? Will there be pencils in your drawer and will you carry a Samsung or Apple phone in your pocket? I don’t think so!

I think that we have no idea about our work in 10 years from now. I do however think that the direction in which we are going is clear. Every step in the development of our day to day work will involve digitalisation. Everything we do will be online and I believe that paperless operations will be the standard.

So it will be of no surprise to you that this is the topic during our next IELA OS2020 in Bangkok. We will have leaders in our Industry sharing their thoughts and there will be members sharing their digital roadmaps with us.

MERCOSUR AND EU TRADE DEAL

A historic agreement between Mercosur and the European Union was reached on June 28th, 2019. It finally materialised after several attempts in 2005, 2006 and 2011.

This is the initial “kick”, now off down a long pathway of revisions until the drafting of a final agreement. The next two years will be filled with discussions and analysis of the deal’s impact on the domestic economies of each participating country.

At the time of this writing, it seems an imminent change of government in Argentina will occur by the end of 2019, leaving an uncertain future. The positions regarding an agreement on the main candidates for President of the country have however been generally favourable towards its passage. Nevertheless, an exhaustive analysis remains to be completed to fully understand what might occur within each scenario.

Relevant features of the agreement relate mainly to customs. A brief analysis is detailed below:

Trading of goods. The agreement contemplates the release from duties on 91% of EU imports and 95% of Mercosur imports, over a period of 10 to 15 years.

The elimination of duties on products for industrial use, farm products, meat, sugar, ethanol, rice, honey, etc. was agreed upon and would be implemented progressively.

Customs Procedures. Both the European and the Mercosur trade blocs have recognised the necessity to redesign current processes with the objective to make customs clearance easier and quicker. For that to be achieved, cooperation of the trade blocks will be required. Modern methods and efficient controls will be the basis for these changes.

My opinion. The above is our interpretation of the relevant aspects of the agreement. There are many others points that were not mentioned in this article but are no less important. From our point of view, the purpose of these measures is to expand trade through the simplification and standardisation of processes, greater timing efficiency and more transparency.

Particularly, from the point of view of an exhibition freight forwarder in Argentina,

transshipments, coordination at borders, supply chain security and exchange of technology and data are some of the many aspects requiring mutual cooperation in order to achieve the commitments already agreed to.

Obviously the changes will respect the frameworks of WTO, WCO, UNCTAD, etc.

Releasing of Goods. Two important measures to optimise time and money have been adopted. First is the creation of an advance electronic submission procedure for the processing of documentation prior to the arrival of shipments. Second is the allowance to release cargo before duties, taxes, fees and charges are determined, not only for general cargo trade, but even more so for perishable goods.

AEO. A practical programme called “Authorized Economic Operator” gives flexible conditions to companies with proper qualifications. This results in fewer required documents, fewer physical customs inspections, express releases, discounts on duties, taxes, fees and charges, as well as reductions of guarantees, etc.

Temporary Admission. There is a special article in the agreement regarding Temporary Admission. In general terms, the conditions remain the same as they are today. Temporary imports must be imported for a specific purpose, but exemptions from certain prohibitions or restrictions will mean that payment of duties, taxes, etc. may also be waived. Re-export of these goods will still be required after the purposes are fulfilled. ATA carnets issued by countries belonging to either of the trade blocks would be accepted under these new regulations. This is a positive change for everyone involved. t

We approve of the new standards, and hope that the stated intentions of the agreement will materialise in the near future. We are convinced those measures will improve trade and generate more events to be held in our cities.

Higher shipping costs for ocean and air carriers

Significant changes in the type of fuel powering commercial cargo vessels will mean higher costs in 2020

The International Maritime Organisation will enforce new emissions standards, effective as from January 1 st 2020 , and designed to significantly reduce pollution created by the world’s ships . Vessels are required to change their fuel source from a high-sulfur sludge to a lower-sulfur fuel of the same class that currently powers aircrafts and trucks. Commercial vessels currently burn an estimated 3 million barrels of low grade oil a day so the impact on the environment will be significant.

With this additional demand for medium grade fuel, analysts predict increases in fuel costs across the board for diesel and gasoline. This will result in higher shipping costs for ocean and air carriers. Costs at the pump for all vehicles and heating oil are also expected to be impacted.

Some ocean carriers have invested in the installation of scrubbers which clean highsulfur fuel to the level mandated. New ships are being fitted with engines running on Liquefied Natural Gas. The majority of cargo vessels will however run on higher graded and more costly fuel.

Analysts say it’s unclear how high prices would work and how long the disruption could last as the industry adjusts to the changes and refineries alter their output. At this time, fuel shortages are not expected. It seems likely that fuel increases in air freight will be the most impactful on the event business.

Ranking revelations by AUMA on 2018 World Leading Exhibition Companies

Seven exhibition companies from Germany were among the Top 15 in the word in terms of revenue in 2018, which is almost half of the ranking. Reed Exhibitions extends its leading role as Top 1 with a revenue of € 1.351,9 million.

AUMA, the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, ranked Informa as the second 2018 World Leading Exhibitions Company, only one year following acquisition of UBM, with € 1.318,9 million (including UBM revenues only for the post acquisition period). Informa Markets acquired UBM in June 2018. Recalling that UBM was ranked second and Informa fourth in 2017, it was the first time a merger of this scale had ever happened in the exhibition industry.

The company has a large presence in markets abroad including the US, Brazil, Dubai, India and China and owns and operates a portfolio of more than 500 leading exhibition brands, serving 15 core industry verticals including Health & Nutrition, Life Sciences & Pharma, and Real Estate & Construction.*

In AUMA’s report, companies from Europe dominate the overall ranking. Of the 34 exhibition companies with revenue totalling more than € 100 million, nine are based in Germany and eight in the United Kingdom. Only four of the 34 companies are based outside Europe: Emerald Expositions (USA), Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Tokyo Big Sight and SNIEC Shanghai.

The global exhibition industry showed stable economic conditions in the recent years, however innovative trends and the growing demand for digital and value-adding platforms may have an impact on the concentration on the market. The strategic realignment of Informa Markets met this trend by showing new potential with their merger leveraging the scale of the combined company to drive forward with both traditional exhibitions and events as well as digitally and data-driven non-booth sales programmes.**

UFI , the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, has named Naji El Haddad as the new Regional Manager for the Middle East-Africa region.

The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) confirmed their figures on growth in the exhibition industry during the second quarter of 2019, posting a year-over-year gain of 1.6% on the CEIR Total Index

The sectors registering robust year-over-year gains are: Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services; Industrial/Heavy Machinery and Finished Business Inputs; Communications and Information Technology. In contrast, Financial, Legal, and Real Estate; Consumer Goods, Retail Trade and Sporting Goods, Travel and Amusement posted year-over-year declines.

For the exhibition industry, there were increases in real revenue (3.8%) and attendees (3.7%). Net square feet (NSF) rose a modest 0.2% but exhibitors dropped by 1.3%.

CEIR CEO Cathy Breden commented that despite the fact that a slowdown in growth had been previously predicted by their economist, the exhibition industry is on track to register a ninth consecutive year of growth. t

The Morocco exhibition market is mainly concentrated in the economic capital. OFEC which is the name of the main venue in Casablanca was built at the beginning of the 50’s.

Today most of the exhibition and trade shows in the medical, building, automotive and fabrics sectors are taking place at OFEC. Others venues solicited by organisers are based in the tourist capital: the Palais des Congrès or Convention Center are both based in Marrakech. 2. Ambition and Visibility in the male dominated Logistics World: It is often so that women do not engage easily in selfadvocacy and are less outspoken about their career ambitions. In Logistics, a smaller proportion of female colleagues exists than male and the number decreases even more when considering leadership positions held in the industry by women. Participating in a mentoring programme can give some women a muchneeded push in the right direction. Women can openly discuss their ambitions and challenges can be overcome with the help of a mentor.

Developing women’s leadership power to succeed in our industry calls out for an inter-generational exchange of experience and knowhow. Every company can implement measures to achieve this goal. One of the best ways to build sustainable female leadership and to support tomorrow’s female leaders is through mentorship.

The designation of key role models is crucial for female individuals in order to be able to learn from the confirmed experience of fellow colleagues with established career experience behind them. Mentoring offers a multi-faceted solution for individuals looking to develop comprehensive leadership skills and apply them to reach new heights in the promotional ladder within a company or industry.

The IELA POWER UP Womens’ Leadership Programme is an initiative which uniquely combines coaching with the power of networking, analytical reflection and tailor-made personal development. Five pillars have been identified which represent the fundamental skills to be nurtured in the programme:

Candidates should apply between October 15th until the end of December 2019. This applies to both Mentors and Mentees. The final selection of both Mentors & Mentees will take place in January 2020.

Mentors and mentees can meet up and connect at the next 2020 Congress in South Africa. The outcome of the initial phase in this coaching experience can be shared with the community.

1. Assertiveness and self-confidence: It is common that women do not feel that their abilities are valued by their leaders and are often not given the tools necessary to create a competent career path. Mentoring can lead to women developing their talent and at the same time celebrating their achievements. More frequent feedback and recognition from a mentor boosts confidence. It paves the way for women to shake off any feeling of frustration and leads them to take full responsibility for setting off on a more ambitious but realistic track.

TRANSITIONING INTO SENIOR LEADERSHIP How to join the initiative

Female Mentee applicants should have a minimum working experience of 5 years and Female Mentors a minimum of 15 years in experience.

3. Managing career transitions: A mentor can help women set accountable personal goals and track their progress in order to achieve career development more successfully. By discussing openly ambition and goals, women are encouraged to reflect on their career and where they see themselves playing a more major role in the future. Management techniques are acquired with respect to their own career management as a part of the learning process.

4. Communicating vision and strategy: In developing multi-faceted skills, consistent goal achievement leads to higher satisfaction and therefore higher personal performance levels. Female leadership talent taking part in a mentorship programme strengthen their communicational skills and refine their strategic thinking. This plays an important role in winning leadership positions in a company. Employee engagement and employee retention is optimised. For women in leadership, overall employee experience improves with the achievement of goals.

5. Networking skills: Having a mentor can give women access to professional networks that may not have been available beforehand. This increases the visibility of an individual and the benefits of higher visibility continues throughout the career path. It goes without saying that when women who were mentored step into leadership roles, they can mentor younger women and continue the success lifecycle by further building and promoting the networks.

During #IELAVenice19 Gala Dinner & Award Night, Mariane Ewbank,

IELA Board Member and former 2016-2018 IELA Chairwoman, received the Honorary Member Award in recognition of the dedication she shows to the Association. Her relentless passion to get things done and her personal commitment to make things happen inspires us all.

IELA conducts its activities with the future of the industry and its people in mind at all times. Mariane reflects this approach in her efforts to lead the association to reach new heights. She is a role model for many professional women within the exhibition logistics industry and we hope that she will be at our side to accompany us in our activities for many more years to come.

“I would not be able to dedicate so much time to IELA if I didn’t have the support of my team at Fulstandig especially my partner Claudio Machado, my fellow board members, the Secretariat and above all, the trust of the members who chose me as Chairwoman”.

These are Mariane’s words on receiving the award. “I feel very honoured. You might have heard me say this already: as the 1st woman, 1st South American, 1st Brazilian to be elected IELA Chairperson, part of my goal is to show all those who undermine themselves for neither being from a large company nor from Europe nor North America, to just go for it and contribute to our Association”.

A first in IELAHistory

We wanted to find out more about Mariane, her views on succeeding in the industry and any tips she might have for us:

IELA: Mariane, you are the first woman to be Chairperson of IELA and the first female Honorary Member of IELA. What are your thoughts on this?

Mariane: I am very happy to be Honorary Member of IELA and I am the first of many women to come!

My parents raised me to open up my own paths in the future. And my paths must be wide enough to have others walking alongside me.

I can’t stand the idea of the unreachable. Ok, things can be difficult to get, to achieve, but they are not impossible. If I believe that I can contribute and do some good, I go for it. And the most important is never to do it alone. I strongly believe in teamwork. That’s what we do at IELA, we work together.

IELA: The Association is developing its Power-Up Programme. What is in your opinion the major advantage of women in exhibition logistics and how can companies benefit from women leaders?

Mariane: We combine our senses with intelligence. Women have a better didactic way to explain how things must be done, we are more open for dialogue. These factors can be determinant strategy developments and for management.

IELA: What would be your recommendation for young women aiming towards leadership positions?

Mariane: The most important startingpoint is to be ethical and also to believe in yourself. These two characteristics put you on the right path towards ambitious goals.

IELA: What, in your opinion, is the main strength of the Association with regard to promoting women in leadership and how can member companies benefit from this?

Mariane: Many more women are involved now in the Working Groups. They show their capacity to contribute, give ideas and lead. Participation in a WG is a great opportunity to present to Member Companies the female talent which exists. Until now it was only lingering in the background.

IELA: How do you see your future in the Exhibition Logistics Industry?

Mariane: Event Freight Forwarding is a passion or an addiction. Of course it depends on how you see it. I see it as a passion.

I think it is great to know that an exhibitor had a successful show because we made it happen - we took good care of the cargo, cleared and delivered it on time.

I see myself staying for a long time in this industry, facing the adversities, overcoming challenges and finding ways to keep the industry alive because I strongly believe that "The Show Must Go On". t

Firstly, I would like to thank the Board Members & Mentors in our group for the smooth transition given to Matthias & myself in taking over successfully. It is with great honour that I take on the role as Chairperson for the IRWG.

Secondly, I would like to thank Matthias Dornscheidt for taking on the role as our Vice Chairman. I look forward to working closely with him to grow the IELA brand.

The outcome of the IRWG 2019 session in Venice can be split into 2 main projects, these being

1. DATA Room

2. Ambassadors Programme

Regarding the Data Room, we are going to discuss this with the IRWG Members and for the time being, the creation of a plan and structure is still in progress.

#GED2019 was a great success showing how far IELA can reach inside the industry. This action led IELA to start the Ambassadors Programme.

IELA will sign additional MOUs with both National & Regional Associations around the world. IELA is after all an Association of Knowledge, the proof of which is evident in IELA’s

• Occupational Health & Safety Guidelines,

• Sustainability Guidelines (in process)

• Organiser & Exhibitor Portal on the website comprised of the Venue Database, Country Files & also a How to…

The Team enthusiasm for building closer relationships with the various Industry Associations around the world bring us into exciting times.

Many thanks to Guido, Priscilla & Elizabeth who made our first meeting possible on August 1st via "Zoom" to plan & plot the road ahead. Matthias & I have already had quite a few brainstorming sessions on IELA’s approach to New Associations & the way forward with the Ambassadors Programme for the IRWG.

Together with the Secretariat, we have obtained a list of all members and the Associations to which they are affiliated. Please ensure you include the Association to which you belong on your website. Please let us know if we should contact one of your Industry Associations. You can contact either Matthias or myself with details.

Over the next few weeks the Working Group will identify the MOUs that should be signed within each country. The Secretariat has already created a presentation as tool for the Ambassador’s Programme.

In addition to UFI and IAEE, IELA is now also a member of Events Industry Council (EIC). Its 2 meetings in the USA will be attended by the IELA Chair and the 2 in Europe by Elizabeth. The next meeting is at Colorado Springs from November 14th - 15th. We look forward to an exciting time of networking & growing our presence within the industry.

Dear colleagues,

Now a few months after Jatin and I took up our roles from our predecessors Dominique and Daniel, believe me - we have been very busy working in the group!

The group is “growing up” so we are very pleased and eager to continue doing great things together.

New Standards of Performance have been created as we have a new category called the “On-Site Agents”. This has involved very good group work as we have developed new Standards and of course revised the old Domestic Agent Standards, clearly defining the difference.

We are also in the throes of revising the IELA Training Manual in order to have the revised version ready for the next Operations Summit in Bangkok in 2020.

The 2018 Standards of Performance Survey was also one of the topics during our meeting and the WG presentation at the IELA Congress in Venice.

The outcome of the survey was once more very positive. The average scores of

the Domestic agent survey and the Export agent survey were once again a little higher than in the previous survey for 2017. We hope to see an increase again next year!

Other projects we have in mind, and on which we are actively working, are for example to make and develop an IELA unified Proforma Invoice. This may help all partners when handling customs clearance procedures.

Of course we are happy to announce that new Award categories will be designed… more details to come!

Dear Friends,

At IELA Venice, I decided to take on the challenge of leading the Membership Working Group as Chairman to replace Sandi Trotter who has moved up to the IELA Board. Lena Widman supports me as Vice Chairwoman of the group.

In the run up to Venice, the WG has been busy with vetting applications and voting for the applicants to be approved by the IELA BOM. We saw the successful applicants announced in Venice and they are now a part of the IELA world.

Streamlining Application Procedures

Following the summer break, the WG has started to test out the online voting mechanism using the SurveyMonkey. The idea is to look at possible ways of streamlining the Membership Application Procedures, which involves our WG members testing the mechanism and giving feedback prior to implementation. The process works this way: Our WG members will be given a File Sharing Platform link to retrieve documents submitted by applicants for membership.

The Secretariat then sends out a survey mailing including a voting link for the WG members to cast their votes confidentially, and to make remarks for any rejections or abstentions. After the voting, the application can be further discussed but the idea is to ensure that the first voting round takes place without the influence of other WG members. This method allows for: (1) Elimination of high loads of email correspondence amongst the WG members; and (2) Confidentiality in each

WG member’s votes, as this does not involve herd mentality and respect for personal opinions without any bias is guaranteed. The secretariat will then be able to tabulate the scoring and comments and forward the applications that received the go-ahead to the BOM for consideration.

Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDAs)

The Secretariat has been working with IELA lawyers on drafting out a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) for members of the WG to sign prior to kicking off their activities on receipt and evaluation of companies’ applications for IELA membership. This development is in line with the EU GDPR regulations which commits IELA to reviewing its information gathering processes.

White Spots

The Membership WG is actively looking for membership potential in white spot countries. As the next congress takes place in South Africa, it is quite apt that we look at filling white spot areas on the African continent. Another major area would be the Middle East (other than the UAE). Recommendations from IELA Members are most welcome.

Other Matters

The Membership WG will be looking into various issues and improvements that were discussed during the WG meeting in Venice.

THINK TANK

Dear Fellow IELA Members,

I hope everyone had a nice Summer Holiday and is ready for the Fall Season. It was so great seeing my IELA Colleagues in Venice at the last Conference.

Speaking of Venice, it was very successful and productive for the Think Tank Working Group. We had a great turn out along with some new eager members joining our team.

This session, we made sure to take the time to really define what the Think Tank WG was and why it was originally created. I felt that the original mission of the group got misplaced or was never really defined. This caused the team to lose the clear vision of our projects. Words such as Inspiration, Change, and Innovation were just a few used in our discussion. This brought us to re-defining what “Think Tank” meant to us as a team. We wanted to be an integral part of the solution for our fellow IELA Members’ issues by bringing new ideas to life that can change existing IELA Processes.

After the group really figured out what we were all supposed to strive for, the projects and ideas came naturally. The IELA Website and IELA Webinars were a main part of the discussion. The website is such a great platform for information about our Industry and for members. However, we all agreed it was not being utilised to its fullest potential. More information about the content available on iela.org on the previous pages 52 & 53.

The team mentioned having an IELA Resource Page where Members can get some more information on industry needs or deficiencies; much like the IELA Approved Vendors for Insurance, Equipment, CRM, etc. Also we discussed an option for providing a “Request a Quote” service option for each Country where customers can submit their individual shipping needs. The information would go out to all the applicable IELA Members it pertains to and provide options for contacting the requestor. This will add a great Member Benefit for all companies who are IELA Members.

Other areas of focus which were also brought up was the IELA mobile App, providing improvements to the already valuable tool for Members. Moving the MyAgenda Scheduling function to this App and also enabling QR code scanning through the app that will provide a more sustainable option, instead of using physical Business Cards. We also would like to create Sub Groups for IELA Industry Related Areas (Entertainment, Art, etc.).

The Think Tank WG is excited to continue to carry this great momentum forward after the Congress Session and move onward with some groundbreaking projects.

After living the “Human Factor” for a week during our Congress in Venice and following a period of recovery (also for me…) we are picking up the pace again to continue what we started during our Education & Training Working Group session.

We were able to define 5 areas of development for our group.

As you can see, we have a lot of tasks ahead that we will work on in the coming year. In all the following reports, I will refer to what has been accomplished per subject.
