PAGHINGA: Essential ang pahinga Ni Julie Ann Villanueva
M
Led Astray or Steadfast on Truth: Social Media in Revealing Who is Who By: Saoirse
W
e cannot deny how powerful social media is. It enables effective social interaction and access to news and information, where everyone can share, create, and spread their ideas with just a click. It is now a fundamental force in our society. Because of its accessibility, we can consider it a prime platform for swaying public opinion; unfortunately,
some use it as a tool to capture the public’s attention and lead them to misinformation and disinformation. In Rappler’s Fact Check articles published between October 2021 and March 2022, data shows that fake news and internet propaganda are rampant than ever. Facebook, considered as the top used social media platform, has also topped the ranking for misinformation, joined by Youtube and TikTok. And based on their estimation methodology, they assumed that there are 22.49 million people exposed to fake news.
Nakakabahala. Especially during the campaign period for the election, social media revealed who is who. Those who are steadfast on truth and who are led astray by misinformation, agendas, and propaganda. Sadly, people tend to share fake news and baseless accusations disguised as sharing opinions. Our school taught us how to conduct research and look for credible sources of authentic information. So, whenever I see people posting baseless accusations and spreading fake news on social media, I feel like I am obliged to act. Be it privately messaging them or commenting on their post in a respectful and considerate manner, I will spare my share because starting a healthy conversation was never wrong. It is our responsibility to remind them of their responsibility as social media users. Replying to misleading or fake news posts might not sway the one who posted it, but it has the potential to sway the observers and the readers of the post. However, not everyone is up for conversations like this. There are fake news peddlers who will resort to ad hominem once they cannot address the actual issue at hand. These are the worst kind of people to argue. There is no chance of opening their minds and encouraging them to find the truth themselves. In social media, people are beauty pageant analysts during beauty pageant season. They suddenly become sports analysts during Sea Games and Olympics. They become political analysts during elections. We always have a say about something. And nothing is wrong with that as long as we know what we are saying and we’re not posting just to look cool and sound right. Social media is a great platform to let the world hear our voice, so we must use it wisely. As it reveals the people who are steadfast on truth and those who are led astray by fake news and misinformation, how will you spare your share?

Graduation Blues I
By Hiraya
was always asked about my dream since I was young. I started dreaming of being a nurse during elementary school. In high school, I was determined to be a well-known historian yet I thought it might be hard to earn money with that. So then I changed my dream again into becoming a Chemical Engineer until I graduated senior high school. That didn’t happen of course because the thing is, I kept on dreaming, forgetting my family’s financial status. It was just so fun and free to dream until reality hits you. But guess what, just a few more days and I’ll be posing on camera wearing a graduation cap, toga, holding my diploma with a proud yet unsure, doubtful and worried smile. After years of studying, I still cannot fathom the right answer to a short but oddly difficult question, “Ano bang plano mo?” As the evenings move to mornings and my last days as a student diminish, a thought has been occupying my mind: I’m terrified. It thrills me that finally I already have a conclusion to my years of preparation of facing the world head on. This is the true test, and I won’t have much time to contemplate or evaluate things. I know that this is what is supposed to happen yet life’s uncertainty is sinking in. Confusion is eating me slowly. The next steps aren’t clear. Should I start working already? Should I go on vacation for a while? What about getting a master’s degree, would it be feasible? Oh wait! Should I take the CIE? The options are vast but what chance would lead me to success. I envy those whose life choices do not need to consider their financial status. Then there’s this doubt that all the years spent in university aren’t enough. Did the school teach me everything necessary? What if all the theories and concepts I learned will be of no help? Is the system in the country so low and corrupt that only those with financial capabilities are able to receive a real quality education? I don’t have the courage to cross the river of futility. I fear to find myself in a situation where I had no option left but to accept jobs so far from what I invested. I am afraid to fail. The last thing I wanna do is disappoint my family. The last thing I wanna feel is self-disappointment. The usual number of “what ifs” had doubled. Then again, I realized all my life I have always been afraid. I was afraid that I wouldn’t pass an exam. I was afraid to defend my paper in front of panels. I was afraid to see 5.00 on my portal and a lot more. There is an option to run away and to escape those difficulties but I didn’t. If I had not faced all those experiences head on, I wouldn’t be looking forward to my own graduation. Ano bang plano ko? Looking at the brighter side, my confusion is actually a good thing. I have a lot of options to choose to answer this question. Whatever path I choose, it’s only up to me to make it the right answer. My formal education may have soonly stopped yet learning will not. This is reality and it’s hitting me but I do not need to figure out everything today, because I have my whole new journey to learn. Ain’t that exciting?

still remember when I first went to audition, I was ashamed for others to hear my voice because for me it was not that beautiful. I was encouraged when they appreciated my voice. Although we have different ranges in our singing voices, we have only one desire to show everyone what our talent is. The most unforgettable memory that I will always remember in Kore Inhinyero is chikahan together with my other members. ll I can say about my experiences as a part of the Student Development Unit of the IE Department is that I am happy. Happy because as time went on, I met other people, and I learned about their experiences as an IE and as a member of SDU. I also learned a lot from them that I didn’t know yet. Of course, I’m thankful to them because they became part of my journey. I am also grateful that I have the experience of being the Head of IEducate (Marketing Group of IE Dept.). I have further strengthened my leadership and marketing skills to promote the Industrial Engineering course to students, especially senior high students. You will learn a lot, have to face many challenges to surpass your limits, and be happy because you can and will handle everything,” sabi ni Alyssa Gadon.

he most unforgettable moment that I have had in my last year at the Student Development Unit in IE Department is that I can showcase how IE changed me as a student and as an individual. I am proud that I can share my knowledge as a co-IE student with my members. We promote and market IE to different schools as a team, and we can share our ideas with other students. We do not forget how to communicate with each other amidst the pandemic, and as a Head, I am very proud of them. To my members, I am very thankful that I have been able to meet you. Y o u have inspired me to further improve m y leadership with you. And the next future Head of IEducate, believe me, it will be all worth it,” dagdag pa nito.
It was a great experience because you will encounter different people, different schools, face different challenges, and the best part of being in the SDU is competing for your beloved school. My most unforgettable moment of being in SDU is competing for the regionals, our school won the overall championship. It was a great experience, because as the head of the IE Maroon Falcons I have witnessed the hardwork of the members during practices and watched how they succeed in the competitions,” ani ni Joshua Pagpapulangan.

Nagtulungan lang kami para mag-improve yung isa’t isa kasi at the end of the day, we’re dancing as a team. Since yung nasalihan kong SDU is nonacademics, parang pahinga na rin sya na wala muna kaming acads na iisipin kahit panandalian lang,” ayon kay Rica Ella Capulong. “Siguro yung most unforgettable moment ko ngayong last year ko na sa IE dance troupe is yung may nakilala na naman akong bagong members na interested sumayaw.

At sana may pagkakataon pa.
Engineering students of BulSU. The IEnquisitve started the Kaizen Dropbox with the aim to showcase the problemsolving skills of BulSU’s IE students through analytical thinking by fostering the idea of continuous improvement to various problems in our society. The participants would be given a theme for their research topic to analyze and create solutions to problems encountered on a daily basis. This project is a step towards how students will view research as a step to progression and the improvement of their lives and as a vital part of how industries function.
The winners of the Kaizen Dropbox were announced just last February 28, 2022. Team Kairos was named Kaizen of the Month with 1st and 2nd runner ups Sir Yaj and Team Anonymity Collectives following them, receiving cash prizes of Php 1000, Php 500, and Php 300 respectively. It is inspiring to see IE students take part in productive events that will hone their research skills and contribute to the future of research. The cash prize of course was a motivation for the participants, but experience can teach us that the learning and enjoyment from involvement like this can transcend any material reward, if anything, the cash prize may as well be just an added benefit. The continuous efforts of the IEnquisitive team and the active participants from BulSU’s Industrial Engineering students are bridging towards the improvement of research and honing minds for problem-solving. The IEnquisitive having a vital role in the IE community deserves all the support and participation.

suffer from their own mistakes. Pollution endangers our existence and destroys our living environment. The future will either be green or not at all.
Environment plays a significant role in making our existence on the planet possible. Everything we use to live a full life comes under the environment. We just can`t live without air, water, land, sunlight, animals, and other natural things. Environmental pollution is affecting our lives physically, emotionally, socially, economically, and intellectually. It has become a major worldwide issue which cannot be solved by the effort of one. We should do our best in order not to put an end to the existence of all living things on earth. Every person on our planet should take a little step to save our environment and maintain its originality. Our earth’s natural resources are rapidly dwindling and our environment is being increasingly degraded by human activities, it is evident that something needs to be done. When it comes to raising awareness about environmental issues, a good place to start is at school. The recent activity of IExtension wherein more than 40 pupils participated in the Project KalIEkasan: “TanIEm Ko, Alaga Mo,” which encouraged students to plant trees in their own homes from January to February 2022. Their goal is to promote and support environmental awareness in their community by doing so. “We believe this kind of project is a learning opportunity to get students involved in the environment and conservation of our natural resources. It’s a great way to increase student interest in their local environment while also achieving academic goals. They become more aware that they can play a significant role in protecting the environment through personal involvement. Moreover, we hope that
FEATURE their experience will help them make intelligent decisions about our valuable natural resources.” the Assistant Student Coordinator of IExtension Nicole Joy Realingo said. A healthy environment supports growing and nurturing the living and nonliving things on the earth. The existence of our healthy life depends on the environment which maintains nature’s balance. So, it is very essential to keep our environment clean to live a healthy and peaceful life. It is important to save our environment and maintain nature’s balance for the existence of life. In today’s uncertainty we should be the light of our better future, just like what the IExtension did. They became an epitome of showing good care towards our environment. Even if it’s just a small step, it made an impactful effect on nature.
15 Bulacan and Brgy. Bulihan, Paridel, Bulacan. Last December 20, 2021. The collective effort of the team made youth gleeful and valued the spirit of Christmas. Life is a journey, moving from the joy of taking, to the joy of giving. Truly giving from the heart fills your life with joy and nourishes your soul. Sharing provides an intrinsic reward that’s far more valuable than the gift. “It’s so much fun because even with the small amount of extension funds, we members were able to help 100 students from Bulihan and Sta Rita.” the head of IExtension Angelica Mae Balor said.
“You can start living a more environmentally friendly life by engaging in different activities. Small day-to-day actions can still contribute to developing a more sustainable worldview. As students, together, thoughts and actions can make a real difference,” she also added

However, the joy of getting power of giving is manifested in the kindness and generosity that you bestow on it is short-lived. Our lives are richer when someone else. we share, and that great inner joy comes from helping others to better their lives. It is the joy and love that we extend to others that brings true happiness and union with God. When we give, we reap the joy of seeing a bright smile, laughter, tears of joy and gratitude for life. We know that if people give just a little more—of their time, skills, knowledge, wisdom, compassion, wealth and love— the world would be a more peaceful and healthier place.
“
It is true that deeds speak louder than words. There’s no better way to show someone how much you care than to give them a present. Something simple can provide joy to someone. The same as IExtension did. Their project LIEllian, “Christmas GIEving: Paskong Paslit 2021,” has provided gifts, school supplies, clothing, and food to over 100 children in Brgy. Sta Rita, Guiguinto,
It is like what Angelica Mae Balor encouragingly said: “Whenever you have more, if you are willing to give. Let’s give to those in need because it feels good to share our blessings with other people.” Truly, the greatest gifts we can commit are the very things we most desire to receive. And let us all unwrap the altruistic season where positivity is being shared, and the bursting bliss are worn by many.
