BulSU IE's Dedication to Excellence: AACCUP Level Joshua M. Espiritu III Phase 2 Accreditation

Last September 13, 2016, the Industrial Engineering Department once again submitted its program Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) for the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) Accreditation, at the Bulacan State University Hostel and this time, for Level III Phase 2 Accreditation, together with two other programs under the College of Information and Communication Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor in Information Technology Major in Computer Technology. (BIT-CT) The one-day yet meaningful accreditation started through an invocation followed by the singing of the national anthem led by the Koro Inhinyero. After this, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Edgardo M. Santos gave his opening remarks followed by the inspirational message delivered by the University President, Dr. Cecilia N. Gascon. Dr. Gascon challenged the three programs subjected to the accreditation during her inspirational speech to pursue and look forward to greater changes and improvement, and as she said ―Change is here in Bulacan State University.‖ After the motivating speech from the University President, the floor was given to the AACCUP Survey Visit Coordinator, Dr. Manuel T. Corpuz to give a short message where he ensured everyone that the accreditation will be fair and as he said, ―We are friends, and as friends, I [We] will tell you the truth.‖ He then proceeded to the introduction of the rest of the AACCUP Survey Team after his message. For the BIT-CT program the team leader was Prof. Mary Grace P. Gallardo from Laguna State Polytechnic University; for the BSIT program the team leader was Prof. Minerva C. Zoleta from EARIST and for the BSIE program the team leader was Prof. Ami Ruth R. Cocson from Mariano Marcos State University. A letter from the EIC To our dear readers, In its 7 years of expressing the mind-set of the IE Students in providing worthwhile and reliable information, IEmmensity has become an integral part of the Bulacan State University Industrial Engineering Department's dedication to excellence, as a leader of instruction, research and extension. The name IEmmensity was rooted in the word "immense", which means something bigger, wider, and broader, partnered with "IE", which stands for Industrial Engineering, which has been a symbol of excellence with its dedication and hard work for continuous improvement. IEmmensity's history can be traced back in 2010 as a part of IE Department's role in providing a holistic education to its students. But due to lack of funds, it started publishing limited number of issues printed in bond papers. In year 2014, it became the first and only Departmental Student Publication recognized by the Office of Student Publication and Information of Bulacan State University. With the help of the BulSU Parents and Teachers Association, the IEmmensity has released offset printed issues of newsletter. It also took on publishing its first ever literary folio back in 2015. IEmmensity also started to release Special Issues in the same year for the 3-day AACCUP Accreditation proper of the BSIE Program. From then, it has produce numerous issues of newsletters that caters the needs of it's readers while honing the skills of its staff in written communication. But its history is not yet ending there. This year, the IEmmensity is set to unfold it new journey as it embark on releasing its first Tabloid Issue in quest of broadening its scope in giving more to its readers. The inclusion of Research and Development Corner and Extension Services Corner to this issue to highlight the pioneering research and responsive community engagement if the IE Department makes it distinct among others. Indeed IEmmensity is about excellence in a wider and broader fora with greater output from limited resources - and that is what IE is all about.

Ramos with his fellow faculty members Engr. Hazel A. Caparas, Engr. Dyan G. Rodriguez, Engr. Juan C. Tecson, Engr. Marianne P. Calayag, Arch. Jeana S. Venturina together with the college‘s secretary, Engr. Oliver Mariano. The tension was felt in the ambiance of the hall as the Presentation of Narrative Profile and Compliance Reports of the three programs started. I must say, the best is not always saved for the last as the Industrial Engineering Department was the first to present their video presentation which was led by Engr. Ivy Mar J. Ramos. The video presentation covering the four areas (Instruction, Extension, Faculty Development and Research) being accredited was narrated by Sarah Louise Cruz and Jose Dominador dela Rama, edited by Kim Rey Rondina and Neil Albert Dacanay and directed by Jasper Kevin Dionisio which lasted for around 42 minutes. --- Prof. Ami Ruth R. Cocson Awarding of certificates was done after headed by Dr. Cecilia Gascon, University President, together with Dr. Edgardo M. Santos, Prof. Jaime P. Pulumbarit, Engr. Romeo D. Robles and Dr. Alfredo G. Mendoza. After this, the closing remarks were given by Dr. Alfredo G. Mendoza, University IQA Director. The one-day accreditation was closed with thousands of smiles as the participants together with the accreditors captured the moments together. It was indeed a meaningful day not only for the Industrial Engineering Department but for the BSIT and BIT-CT as well. The three programs were just waiting for the final and official announcement of results of the said accreditation and everyone is hoping for the best.

CATALYST OF CHANGE Haven Bryan Duran The department of Industrial Engineering celebrated its 14th annual general assembly with a theme, CATALYST OF CHANGE: IEnvisioning Excellence, held at the Valencia Hall of Bulacan State University last September 8, 2016. The masters of ceremony, Mr. Khen Nagasawa and Ms. Danielle Mikee Tancio started the program by calling Mr. Paulo Cruz, Ambassador for Nationals of PIIE, to lead the invocation, and Koro Inhinyero for the singing of the national anthem and BSU hymn. Engr. Hazel Caparas, PIIE BulSU-SC advisers, gave her welcome remarks to her fellow faculty members and students to officially open the event. Then the plenary session started as Engr. Dyan Rodriguez, faculty member of the IE department, introduced the

The tension became even more extreme when the Evaluation/Validation of the AACCUP accreditors took place. Despite the pressure, Engr. Ramos was able to manage the situation and was very confident in answering the questions thrown by the esteemed accreditors. Dr. Corpus asked for the percentage of CIE passers which was briefly answered and explained by Engr. Ramos.

―…it is not a, mandatory for IEs to take the exam pero sabi nga namin it is a must…it depends on the number of takers, in my case, I took the exam way back 2010, so ako lang po ‗yung naglakas-loob na kumuha ng exam nung 2010 [and] I passed so we have 100%...for the last year 2015 we got 78[%] passing rate… that was the latest… [Our] IE students know that the exam is not required but it‘s a must…‖ --- Engr. Ivy Mar Ramos He was also asked about the different areas of the accreditation like the research works of the department, the faculty improvement, their best extension project and their plans to apply for Washington Accord. Engr. Ramos was able to explain and point out the information being asked. Throughout the question and answer portion, Dr. Corpus implicated his admiration to the department‘s program.

―… I noticed, to me, your program for faculty improvement is strong… we will be [the] ones to framed the accreditation of PTC and they asked me for SUC‘s because they select who will be evaluated by them, they asked for five and I‘m glad to say that among the five, I recommended Bulacan State University… I hope you really pursue that [Washington Accord]... naubusan na kame [questions], marami na kayo kasing ginawa sa narrative profile, marami pa itong presentation kaya nalula na kame, sobra-sobra ‗yung ginawa ninyo…‖

--- Dr. Manuel T. Corpus The Evaluation/Validation went really smooth for the well-prepared Industrial Engineering‘s Accreditation Task Force. Every question thrown was briefly explained and answered which had given relief to the whole industrial engineering community. After the nerve-wracking question and answer portion, the accreditors, and the rest of the participants went to the BulSU canteen to have their lunch. The program resumed with the accreditor‘s impressions delivered by the AACCUP Survey Visit Coordinator, Dr. Manuel T. Corpus. His speech mainly focused on persuading the participants to submit their respective programs to the Level IV of accreditation where according to him, only 8 out of 91 programs passed the said level of accreditation. Also, his speech had implications of the job well done that the three programs did, implications which were indirectly stating that they all passed the said level of accreditation. Dr. Cecilia Gascon followed him with her Commitment of Support. She claimed that from the 5 universities having Level IV accredited programs, Bulacan State University will be the sixth university to qualify and pass the said level of accreditation. Team leader for the Industrial Engineering Program Prof. Ami Ruth R. Cocson, found the program really good, when asked towards her impressions to the department‘s program this was what she had to say.

To our esteemed accreditors, faculty and students of BulSU College of Engineering and College of Information and Communication Technology, friends, ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant day to all. It is surely a significant affair each time we meet, discuss, and attempt to enhance the current state of the services we offer in universities. It is a typical thought that continuous improvement will lead to better results. Winston Churchill once said that: ―To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.‖ At BulSU, we are open to change and we want to change for the better. To better and strengthen the academic programs of the University, it is but right and proper to look into our ways and practices and consider whether we are doing them the right way. Basically, the undergraduate programs are one of pinnacles of the prowess and preeminence offered by a university to individuals who try to obtain professional growth and advancement. Photo taken by: Nikka Galman It is in this spirit, that we readily submit our three prog r a m s , Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor in Industrial Technology Major in Computer TechnoloDr. Cecilia GAscon, BulSU President as she address the level gy, to the professionIII Phase 2 Accreditation al perusal of the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). We do this for the reason that we intend to have nothing but the best in providing quality and pertinent services with national and i n t e r n a t i o n a l s t a n d a r d s . Moreover, this undertaking is a perfect opportunity for our College of Engineering and College of Information and Communication Technology to evaluate themselves in the light of our vision, in assessing our strengths and weaknesses, and reflect on our mission to provide higher professional, technical and instruction for special purposes and promote research and extension services, advanced studies and progressive leadership in various disciplines. With this, I welcome our accreditors, the faculty, staff and students of our College of Engineering and College of Information and Communication Technology to this one-day activity. To our distinguished accreditors, please make your stay with us comfortable. Let us know how we could be of better service as you help and guide our Institution in finding better and excellent services. May this endeavor be meaningful and beneficial to our unified aim of progress in education. Thank you and to God be the glory!

Ann Paulene W. Villanueva According to one of the famous Chinese Proverbs; ―Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.‖ Every student has a choice whether they’ll continue the challenge or not for them to gain success. And for us, Industrial Engineering students, we are lucky because our Photo taken by Rellie Boy Quilantang professors always pursue to have an orientation talk wherein the third year students will be more knowledgeable on what Industrial Engineering is all about. On the 31st day of August 2016 marks Engr. Rodriguez as she explains the role of each student another orienAffiliate in the IE Department tation for third year students. Together with the IE Professors; Engr. Juan C. Tecson, Engr. Hazel Caparas, Engr. Dyan Rodriguez, Engr. Marianne Calayag, Arch. Jeana Venturina, and Engr. Ivy Mar Ramos. Each professor discussed different important subject and point which are all about the facilities, wherein it tackles the different facilities involved, what is the importance and how will it help IE Students in their daily lives. Another is the faculty, this covers the member of the faculty, the subject that they‘re teaching and the capabilities and the knowledge the members of the faculty can share. The course outline wherein what subject are being taken up and what are their pre-requisites.

IE’s Road to Fitness Jasper Kevin Dionisio ―Mens sana in corpore sano‖ - A sound mind is a sound body. The Industrial Engineering Department believes that being inclined not only, mental wellbeing includes care for one’s physical aspect. With this the department’s Instruction was integrated with various activities promoting a holistic approach in the development of its students as a productive individuals which embodies excellence mentally, socially, and physically.

Last October 27, 2016, the IE Dance Troupe, conducted a ―We Dance We Step it Up‖ Zumba Party participated by numerous Industrial Engineering Students of Bulacan State University. The event was done in front of the Pasalubong Center in the Bulacan Capitol Grounds. The IE Dance Troupe members prepared sweatinducing and heat pumping Zumba steps not only to exercise the IE Students but also to relieve their stress in the midst of hefty research works, studies, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. This event also served as an avenue for the IE students to mingle and to get together with their ka-IE‘s. The night after the Zumba Party, the IE Department Chairperson, Engr. Ivy Mar J. Ramos, congratulated Renzei Manez, and the rest of the IE Dance Troupe, on a post in the Facebook group of the PIIE-BulSU SC.

Lastly, the affiliates and incentives, affiliates like IEmmensity, IExplore, IExtension, IEnvest, IE Dance Troupe, IEntelligent, Koro Inhinyero, and IE Pink Falcons were discussed wherein each student must have his or her affiliate to gain All Smiles. year that had passed is indeed a successful and fruitful year for the department. It is in this year when the BS Industrial Engineering Program was awarded the Level III Accreditation from the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines last September. He also added that the department will strive more and more for the years to come. Towards the end of his speech, an unexpected thing happened, but that is for Engr. Ramos alone. The PIIE – BulSU SC officers together with the Affiliate heads and co-heads, prepared a simple surprise for the IE Department head for his birthday. A short video presentation compiling the greetings of Sir Ivy‘s friends was played. The microphone was also handed to the Affiliate Heads for their message. Also, the President of the PIIE – BulSU SC, Daisy Celyn Asilom, made her remarks. She thanked everyone for their help they extended to the organization most especially during the Opening Ceremony of the 7th Engineering Week, which was organized by the PIIE – BulSU SC. A boodle fight lunch was served afterwards. Each affiliates prepared a food as their contribution for the Courtesy of IEnteractive

incentives, affiliates will help the students to outcast and show their other strength and talents depending on the affiliate they will choose, another point here is the different policies to follow to accumulate incentives. Another agenda discussed in the orientation is being the Industrial Engineering itself, what opportunities, contest to join, what is IE, the advantages of being an IE and more. Those are some points needed to understand by the incoming third year students. On the following day on September 1, 2016 is the orientation of parents of the third year student. Parents were very glad to have the orientation because they can now understand different aspects when it comes to being an Industrial Engineering Student. The aim of the orientation is as same as the third year orientation, to make them understand all about IE. They said that it was different attending an Orientation in college, parents were very impressed because the professors gave their time for the parents and the professors were very much happy too because parents also attended in orientation. I can say now that we are lucky to become part of Industrial Engineering Department; the department gives their very best effort to make us understand and develop our minds. They help us to be more exposed on what IE feels like. Our department helps us to become the best that we can be in improving our talents.

Ann Paulene W. Villanueva As for a year ender of this 2016, here comes the most awaited short film. The Third Industrial Engineering department’s short film occurred on the 12th day of December to 16th day of December. Different sections were very excited for the film to manifest it because they gave their very best effort to make every film possible. The IEnteractive, one of the affiliates of Industrial Engineering Department was the host of that event. They give every section a chance to prove that aside from studying well, IEs are also best in showing their talents when it comes to directing, managing, producing a film. IEnteractive are the ones who make the mechanics and other matter involving in the contest of short film. This will enhance and develop a friendly competition and unity for each IE student. Each section has an entry film to watch namely: IE 3A‘s entry was Batch 2006, IE 3B‘s entry was Pangitain , IE 4A‘s entry was Lights, Camera, Action, IE 4B‘s entry was It Ends Here, IE 5A‘s entry was The Reunion, and lastly, IE 5B‘s entry was Where My Love Goes Into You or Into the Wind. The film was opened to those who want to watch. The announcement of the winners will be next year, the IEnteractive and the professors were happy because of everyone‘s cooperation that even though everyone is busy with their academics and other errands, they still manage to submit the required film. Another short film again was eminently done. We are looking forward to another short film for the IE Department and for others to be cooperative and be united in doing this event.

[12 AM THOUGHTS] What if’s of BulSU Enrollment: A long queue to reality. Jasper Kevin C. Dionisio

your thoughts? Do time, situation, and people involve were really considered? As the line stated, ―Think before you click‖, all of us might as well consider different things when social media is involve. We are not equal in terms of thinking, it‘s a fact. Understanding the differences is the best way to share your thoughts on someone, or issues. When you understand that the majority of the people around you are not capable of speaking in English, you will not think it was funny when they try to. We are all dumb at first, but learning doesn‘t stop there. When we understand the differences, we would not judge others. We are not going to conclude things just because a single woman posted ―I‘m Pregnant‖. We are not going to degrade someone because he posted ― I failed the examination‖. We are not going to be mad at someone just because he posted ―I‘ve killed someone‖. We are not going to react ―angry‖ when someone posted ―I want to die‖. We are not going to judge them, because we understand that there are situations in their life that we are not aware of. That the single woman was raped, that that someone who failed the examination is struggling to bigger issues in his life, that that someone who have killed was just protecting himself or herself, that that someone who want to die is having a depression. It is, somehow, impressive to read posts about what they think of something. That they are interested, and they do care to the issues regarding the country. That they care for someone they know. That they care for someone they don‘t know. They care for the lack of knowledge of other people. That they care for the loss of the greater people, that they care for the economy, that they care for the scarcity of food to certain places in the country, that they care for the next generation. It is, indeed, impressive to know that the generation cares to what is happening. But, when is the best time? Is there really a time to care for the things around you? Is there really a time to mind other‘s business? Is there really a time to be a good citizen of the country? Every time is the best time to mind others, but, sometimes, silence is the best thing to do, considering the people involve, and situation they are in. helping someone doesn‘t have to be shouted, because a hug is a great help, but, it doesn‘t have a sound.

Getting up early, going to the university as early as 12 am, 5 hours of waiting, untoward incidents and annoying experience with ‗singits‘, starvation and ‗ ngawits‘, ‗masusungit na cashiers and guards‘, these are just few of the many reasons why enrollment in Bulacan State University is a ‗buwis-buhay‘ experience for its students. Enrollment is indeed a nightmare for BulSUans. But let me take you to a sweet dream – a dream of what if‘s, a paradox of reality, a contrasting entity against the truth, a wild imagination. Imagine enrollment is just a 3 – 5 minute procedure. That you can enroll with just a click on your mobile phones, tablets, or laptops. That you can view your grades in your personal account on a portal that is accessible through the internet. And with that portal, you can also access the enrollment system. That you can choose the subjects you need to enroll, then clicking a button for evaluation and assessment and you‘re ready to go. That this system prints vouchers, payment slips or deposit slips that is accepted not only in the university‘s cashier but also in various banks within the Bulacan Area. That this system can also caters online payments for those who have their bank accounts who also avoids the hassle of queues. That this system caters printing of Certificate of Registration (COR‘s) by just entering the receipt number or transaction number of the students‘ tuition fee payment for verification and a download link of your COR pops-up on screen. Imagine. Do well whatever you do Imagine a cashier in its own large building, banklike, well ventilated, well lighted, not ‗cashier kapag enrollment, gymnasium kapag hindi‘, with accommodating guards, approachable help desk officers and smiling tellers. It is standing between giving up and how much you can take for every battles and challenges you‘ll encounter, it is a battle between fighting and giving it a try or losing the opportunity and let your worries cover you. For some, important chances and opportunities, they‘re wasting it because they believe that there are better opportunities that will come for them. Not knowing, they lost the best opportunity for them by not taking it and looking for other better chances. And for the other some, they like to grab that opportunity even if they think it is a small one but they don‘t grab it because of lacking confidence and they don‘t think they can do it. They are afraid to take risks. The thing is, grab all the opportunities while there are. Don‘t be afraid to take risks and don‘t choose the opportunities that are coming for you. As other would say, strike while the iron is hot. Grab and grab until you succeed. We all have a battle to fight on, a work to accomplish, an opportunity to grab on, and a time to finish a specific goal. Of course, in the beginning you can encounter misery, difficulties, hardships for every path you‘ll take, but that what makes you stronger, after fulfilling every steps, you‘ll realize that there‘s half way to go and you‘re done. It‘s just a matter of confidence, trust, faith, perseverance and believing in yourself. Don‘t be afraid to take every opportunity and chances that is knocking in your door. Who knows what‘s inside the box if you‘re afraid to open it. Sometimes you‘ll feel that you need to stop on what you‘ve started because you can‘t do it and some people do not believe on what you can do. No. Don‘t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big for you. There are always some people who‘ll put you down but always believe to yourself. Always bear in mind that your goals aren‘t achievable if you let yourself believe that. For every opportunity that‘s coming into your life, God knows it‘s for you and don‘t let it to go into waste. Every chances and opportunities matter. Grab all the opportunities that‘s coming and you‘ll never know, that is your first step in the ladder of success you have been dreaming of. Always give a try for every circumstance; you can‘t achieve something if you believe you are nothing, I always believe that for every situation, incidents, and occurrences there are ways. There‘s a way to make it happen and to make the impossible be possible.

Studying is Life but Incentives are Lifer

Rose Angeline Geronimo

Joshua “The Great” Espiritu The Industrial Engineering Department aims not only to improve the intellectual capacities of its students but also to provide a platform for them to show their overall potentials. Through its different affiliates, students were able to discover various skills they have within them. To keep their students motivated in doing their respective activities, the faculty of the IE department decided to give incentives to those who are doing well and are actively participating in their chosen affiliates. The incentives given can give students‘ grade an up to 10% increase in their final grades on their

FEATURES IE subjects. Seems to be blinding right? RIGHT! And that is why students are getting obsessed to these affiliates for they think that it is their last ace in passing the semester. There are students who joined various affiliates to secure the reward given at the end of the semester. However, some were not able to comply with the tasks given to them since they have a lot of things to do. Some chose only one affiliate to focus on, which is effective (at least to those that I know) if you are eyeing on the reward, but for some, they were not able to comply to the affiliate‘s requirements just because they are not given a task. Aside from them there are still these students who chose only those affiliates they know they can really help in. Usually, they are the ones benefiting with the incentives given since they are able to fulfil the tasks assigned to them. However, some became so devoted that they gave most of their time to their affiliates rather than their academics, some would even excuse their selves or worse, cutclasses just to comply with their events. On the other hand, there are these students who are not belonging to any affiliates either by choice or just because none of the affiliates accepted their application. Well that‘s life. Having these different instances, students really have variety on their output at the end of the semester and so the incentives they will receive. Some received incentives they deserve, some get more than what they deserve, some were not given the incentives they worked hard for and there are some who are ranting for incentives they did not have, when in fact they don‘t even deserve to have any reward. For me, incentives are privilege that we must exert an effort on and not a right to be demanded. For us to be rewarded, it is our job to do our best on everything that we do for our respective affiliates. It is everyone‘s responsibility to be just and reasonable in giving and demanding for an incentive, from the affiliate‘s adviser, head and co-head down to the members, everyone should keep in mind the importance of integrity within the incentives given. If you are one of those who received reasonable reward, then keep up the good work. If you are one of those who received more than what you think you deserve, then work harder to prove yourself. If you didn‘t receive the incentive you deserve, then work even harder for your work to get notice. If you are one of those who are demanding for a reward you don‘t deserve, just shut it up. But most importantly, let‘s all focus on our academic performance because at the end of the day, we are all aiming to be an Industrial Engineer and not a member of our loved affiliate.

Continued from page 1— Four of the IE Faculty and one of their students flew to Taipei, Taiwan to attend the 17th Asia Pacific Industrial Engineering and Management Systems Conference last December 7 – 10, 2016. ―Never regard study as a duty but as an enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later works belong‖. –Albert Einstein Einstein is referring to ones legacy and its intended future recipients as being willfully purposed to benefit them on their journey through this gift of life given to us by God. This has been the mindset of Engr. Jose Victor Carpio who believes skills and knowledge are important to be developed and improved. He is a Certified Industrial Engineer by the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers, Inc. (PIIE) and the Industrial Engineering Certification Board (IECB). He is presently an Operations Auditor in La Filipina Uy Gongco Group of Companies wherein he performs process inspection to determine whether the existing internal controls are adequate, effective and efficient to eliminate or mitigate risk with regard to operation. He also provides recommendations to improve the current system by setting work standards and process leadtime. Fresh from college, JV began his career as Plant Industrial Engineer in Pascual Laboratories, Inc., an ISO9001 certified manufacturing company. His five years of substantial experience there shows passion and interest in his career path. It helped him to identify his own skills and even highlight the areas he wants to work on.

“It is more important to improve your skills and knowledge because it will serve as your strong foundation in building your career” – JV Carpio

Lean Manufacturing, Motion and Time Study, Capacity Planning, Process Mapping, Statistical Quality Control and 5S has been his area of expertise since then.

―My advice to my fellow IE’s is to take CIE exam because it will give you an advantage when you look for a job. Based on my experience, it is better to look for a job with a high salary. For young professionals like you, it is more important to improve your skills and knowledge because it will serve as your strong foundation in building your career. Just be confident about yourself and don’t be afraid to take challenges‖ said Engr. Carpio. Just because we are finished with one degree does not mean we should stop learning. Lifelong learning is the secret to success on both our career and personal life. As Rancho said from the movie 3 Idiots, ―There was knowledge everywhere. Go get it from anywhere you can.‖

SQC and Ergonomics: Back-to-Back Defense in a Week By Denise Mae Unsay Two is better than one, they say. But for the Fourth Year IE Students, this is the number of theses they need to defend. Human Factors Engineering and Statistical Quality Control are some of their major subjects and last November 2016, they presented their respective studies. Maintaining the Quality of Products Using statistical methods, fourth year students aim to monitor and maintain the quality of products and services of a company. Aside from their subject adviser, Engr. Dyan G. Rodriguez, it was unusual that the distinguished panel members were fifth year students namely Letrelle Montes, Khen Nagasawa, John Nanip and Paulo Isip. Each group has thirty (30) minutes to present their studies following the outline from introduction followed by the problem statement, methodology, results, recommendations, and conclusion. After presenting, there was an allotted time for questions and clarifications on each group. After everyone has presented, hard works paid off for some, their subject adviser gave recognition to the groups who did well on their studies. It was given to the top three groups in each section. From IE 4A, Agulto, Cabebe and Dela Cruz determined that the 520ml coconut juice of a company is not statistically in control; Aquino, Dacanay and Olarte said that the company could set limits on producing non-comforming products; lastly, Bautista, Despabiladeras, Espiritu and Martinez suggested that the company should have a daily or weekly record of their data. Meanwhile, from 4B, Cruz, Tiongson and Ramos identified the causes of out-of-control points of the extrusion process; Flores, Jamandre, Molina and Vallo revealed the sources of defects on hatchery; Dionisio, Santos and Unsay proved that productivity of a company can be improved if standard time will be established. Fitting the Task to Man Human Factors and Ergonomics deals with the safety and comfort of workers. Using its principles the students need to make a research on improving such products, tools, and workplace system that fits user or worker. Included on the distinguished panel list are the faculty members of Industrial Engineering Department – Engr. Ivy Mar Ramos, Engr. Juan Tecson, Engr. Marianne Calayag, Engr. Dyan Rodriguez, and Arch. Jeanna Venturina. 1-day presentation for each section was scheduled. Each group consists of three members has fifteen (15) minutes to compress their

FEATURES

PAGE 5 findings from introduction, problem statement, objective of the study, methodology, results and discussion, and their conclusion. Another five minutes was allotted for clarifications about their research. Most groups presented an assessment on workplace systems of different workers – Espiritu et. al. on motorcycle riders, Lopez et. al., Cano et. al., Valdez et. al., and Martinez et. al., on sewing machine operators, Aquino et. al., and Caldedero et. al. on water station, Gabayno et. al. on jewellers, Delos Santos et. al. on office employees, Castro et. al. on welders, Bautista et. al. on food product company, and San Mateo et. al., and Aldaba et. al. on cashiers. Moreover, Cruz G. et.al. on traffic enforcers, Pascobillo et. al. on sewing machine operators, Luis et. al. on kitchen sinks, Carlos et. al. on bank tellers, Cortez et. al. on municipality office, Venturina et. al. on computer laboratories, and De Vera et. al. on food product company. On the other hand, remaining researches are about redesigning of tools and products, from IE 4A, Olarte et. al. on cash deposit machines, Dela Cruz et. al. on paint spatula scraper, Geronimo et. al. on shoulder pads, and Villegas et. al. on e-tray. Other proposed improvement from section B were, Ramos et. al. on navigational system of a mall, Unsay et. al. on shovels, Dionisio et. al. on e-bikes, Camposano et. al. on crutches, Duran et. al. on convertible arm chairs, Villanueva et. al. on yoke apparatus, Asuncion et. al. on backpacks, and Del Rosario et. al. on male line pants. Same with SQC, best papers were also acknowledged. From sections A and B, respectively, Geronimo, Faustino and Agulto developed shoulder pads that can bring better comfort on shoulder bag users and Unsay, Rondina and Sanchez proved that ergonomic intervention on shovels can reduce the risk of MSDs on construction workers. After months of research, all the effort they put through was really worth it because of the good outcome of the presentations. Defending thesis is definitely a nerve-wracking experience. However, this experience is a chance to gain expertise in the area of interest that will be valuable in real world.

IE SHORTFILM FESTIVAL Last December 2016, the Industrial Engineering students once again showed their artistry in their 3rd IE Film Fest during the Engineering Week. To look back with these films, I am here with you to reminisce and give you my insights on the mesmerizing films and performances of our co-actors/actresses and filmmakers.

Batch 2006 (A Secret Untold) Even if they are a newcomer, the IE3A‘s film is definitely a contender in this year‘s film fest. The transition from comedy to suspense was smoothly delivered. The plot is surprising and I must say that there are lot of new faces to look forward in the coming years of our annual film fest, both on comedy and drama. Although almost everyone tried to throw their funniest lines, Mark Uy and Zam Reyes are definitely stand outs in their comedic roles while Gilbert Caballero and Maureen Yambao throw an excellent performance in their melodramatic roles. Although there were little problems with their shots (where Benjo, Gilbert‘s character, is lying on the ground) a great plot and mesmerizing performances of actors are more than enough to make the viewers forget that.

Pangitain

A series of murders is what our other newcomer brought to the film fest. Though the progression of the story is a bit slow and the killer was exposed too early (eliminating the suspense factor of the film), their cinematography is definitely one of the best. Screenplay is also something to point out with this film. I believe that they have a good story to tell but wasn‘t able to execute it the way they wanted to. But overall, it is still an amazing film to watch.

Lights, Camera, Action A film with three stories to tell is what IE4A brought in this year‘s film fest. The connections of each film to each other were definitely something to get noticed. Every story made their own impact to the audience. From the original song ―Liwanag sa Dilim‖ on the first film to the sensational performances of Patricia Valdez and Neil Albert Dacanay on the second one and up to the enchanting and quite seducing attires of the four ―sanggres‖ in their parody of Encantadia, they definitely exerted an effort doing this film. Aside from good stories, they also gave quite an impression with their special effects on the third story, Engkantanders. Although there were some issues in their audio especially on the last story, this film still left a smile on its viewers‘ faces.

It Ends Here Short but sweet, IE4B‘s film made us all witness a tragic love story while laughing in between scenes. The natural onscreen chemistry of Denise Mae Unsay and Emjhay Pagdanganan was once again shown in this film but having Hans Buluran as the other ―woman‖ has brought so much comedic feels in the film. A good story and an outstanding performance of actors well-crafted by Kim Rey Rondina is surely a strong contender of this year‘s film fest.

The Reunion Another reunion story but delivered differently. IE5A‘s guess-who‘sthe-killer film would really challenge your analysis of the characters‘ action to determine who the killer is. Their story-telling is impressive and their shots really help them to execute their narration. Also, Myra Manabat and Daisy Asilom literally and figuratively slayed everyone in this film with their remarkable delivery of their roles.

Where My Love Goes IE5B‘s film delivered another tragic story of love and betrayal. The story was there but their audio problems really hindered the actors‘ delivery of their lines. Like in their previous films they once again make us sing along in their film with their wonderful choices of songs giving emphasis to the scenes. Aside from their excellent choices of music, their shots are also something to be given importance. So there you go, after reminiscing all of the films, I am now really excited on what the new set of entries next film fest will give us. They may make us fall in love again, or give chills down to our spine or touch our emotional hearts, one thing is for sure, they will all be worth-watching. Goodbye for now, and see you on our 4th IE Film Festival.

IE SUPERLIGA Reunites IE Students and Alumni

Indeed, IE SuperLiga brought enjoyment to IE students especially the Alumni. ―Thanks for inviting us. We are looking forward for more years of this event. Job well done.‖- said Chris Sanchez, an Alumni. Surely, this event is definitely worth to pursue again.

Denise Mae M. Unsay A time off from academics and jobs – The IE Falcons, the sports team of Industrial Engineering Department, headed by Janna Ang organized the first ―IE SUPERLIGA‖ held last 25th of August at the BulSU Activity Center. IE SUPERLIGA is a one-day league consisting of ball games and indoor game for the Industrial Engineering Students and Alumni. Around 9 o‘clock in the morning when the program began. John Paulo Cruz led the prayer and asked the IE Faculty poses with the IE Falcons after the Awarding of for Winners guidance of our Almighty God throughout the said event. Then, Engr. Ivy Mar Ramos, the IE department head, gave his opening remarks. He gladly welcomed everyone especially the Alumni way back from Batch 2009 up to the latest graduates and showed appreciation because they spend their free time to participate. Also, he reminded everyone to just play a friendly game, enjoy the moment and most importantly ensure everyone‘s safety. Since it was the first ―IE SUPERLIGA‖ which is not in line with Engineering Week, Foundation Week nor IE Day, he congratulated the affiliate for making it possible and looking forward for more to come.

Bagsik had the most number of wins 3-0. Meanwhile, representatives from IE-3B led by Relie Caluag, IE-4B with their captain ball Sarah Cruz, Falcons which is divided into two teams supervised by (A) Janna Ang and (B) Rodpel Canoza and the Alumni competed in the volleyball court. After eliminations, the two teams of Falcons met at the finals. They played a best-of-five set game. Team B won two straight sets but Team A didn‘t lose hope by giving them a challenging 3rd set. Still Ang, Cortez, Manalad, Mateo, Perez, Sta Ana, and Rivera managed to claim the victory of Falcons Team B after winning the 3rd set 26-24. Fun but intense basketball game between the ladies of Alumni and combination of 4th year and 5th year students delighted the crowd. The team of IE students have their own twin-tower namely Faye Meneses and Jemille Venturina that formed a strong defense against their opponent. On the other hand, Alumni had a solid team consisting of former players of Red Ants Women‘s Basketball Team, Illa Teruel and Hyacinth De Guzman. IE Students, 24-17, successfully defeated the Alumni.

In the basketball boys‘ division 10 teams competed in single elimination. Rustia, Malabanan, Ruiz, Caguntas, Jopet Cruz, Paulo Cruz, and Marasigan together with their teammates represented their respective sections. One of the most awaited event in engineering week is the opening ceremony wherein the parade of muses, COEnternational pageant, and dance competition, is a need to watch. Our very own Jemille Venturina show her beauty as well as her intelligence after winning 1st runner up at the said pageant. In sudoku 4th year Boys Division, IE representatives made it to the 3rd spot, while in 5th year boys, they got the 2nd place award, in chess girls, Mary Lucero gave her best shot to conquer the 2nd spot, while in dtable tennis doubles-men, IE shows unity and passion to get the 2nd place award, as well as our representatives in table tennis doubles-women division who are crowned to be the champions, another pride of IE department are the representatives for badminton doubles-women who placed 2nd, and of course the IE Pink Falcons basketball girls who made it to the 3rd spot. All of the IE representatives gave their best, their time, and their God given talent for every sports and competition they joined, that‘s why the head, teachers and students are very proud for both of those who win and don‘t, it‘s already a pleasure and an honor to represent Industrial Engineering/Pink Falcons.
