Five Action Steps to Get Peak Performance from Employees

Employees perform at their best when (and only when) they know their leaders care, their work has meaning, and they have the chance to learn, grow, and develop. As a business owner, you have to inspire them, empower them, and guide them.

Let’s focus on the rst discipline in this process and particularly on ve actionable steps you can take to inspire people in your company to perform at their highest levels.

A discipline is de ned as “the development and practice of meaningful and purposeful habits.” A “discipline” is not a to-do list item that you check o and move on; it is something you embrace and embed in your leadership practice on a regular and consistent basis.

Wanted: Strong Leaders

I recently came across an article in the Globe and Mail claiming Canada has become roadkill with respect to global economic competition. e article o ered up a glimpse of hurdles to overcome when the 16-year United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) comes under review in two years on July 1, 2026.

e article suggested that whatever the outcome of the U.S. election this year, the next U.S. administration is most likely going to seek changes to the USMCA as part of a joint review. While both Canada and Mexico would prefer to retain the status quo, and remove the threat of USMCA terminating at its scheduled end in 2036, having all governments agree to a renewal for another 16-year term is going to be a challenge.

With American President Joe Biden expected to face election pressure to take a hard line position on some USMCA issues - including Mexico on labour, energy, and agriculture issues, and likely Canada on dairy, digital taxes, among other issues - the article claims that a review in two years is inevitable.

e roadkill reference refers to how Canada was perceived to have caved during the previous negotiation of the North American Free-Trade Agreement (NAFTA), when the Americans, at the 11th hour, inserted a clause to deter negotiating a trade agreement with China for security reasons. is clause allowed a country to leave the agreement if a member nation negotiated a trade deal with China.

is clause had a massive psychological impact, essentially scaring Canadian negotiators. But while Canada panicked, the Americans went ahead and negotiated, and subsequently signed, their own partial trade agreement with China, giving unique advantage to American agricultural exporters at the expense of their Canadian counterparts.

ere is little doubt that the Americans will once again leverage legitimate security concerns in Russia, China, the Middle East and North Korea to continue to realize commercial advantages over both Canada and Mexico.

Can Canada overcome its economic, psychological and security dependence on the U.S.  when negotiating the USMCA  that will likely come under review in two years?

In order to deliver, Canada will need strong leaders and an even stronger resilience. Will we be up for it?

Sell More by Saying Less

Four tips to enhance trust and boost sales through stronger listening

Over the 30 plus years I’ve worked with teams to enhance their customer service and selling skills, I’ve observed one simple, seldom-used communication skill that builds trust. ose who apply it create stronger, higher-value relationships professionally and personally.

What’s the skill? Being seen as a strong listener. Unfortunately, most of us see ourselves as being good listeners, yet the way we actually communicate may unintentionally

come across as dismissive or condescending. is is not good. To ensure you’re drawing others in rather than putting them o , here are four ways to enhance trust through stronger listening.

1. Rethink “Impressive”

Social media ‘in uencers’ are o en famously self-absorbed. Many of them video themselves displaying the latest fashion, workout technique, or political opinion. While this may

impress in the one-way direction of social media posts, it’s generally obnoxious when applied to one-on-one communications. Imagine a coworker droning on to you about their latest endeavour without ever turning the conversation towards you. Not an ideal conversation anyone wants to be stuck in  By contrast, we are fascinated and engaged when people ask us questions and take a genuine interest in our responses. Incessant talkers are annoying; curious questioners are impressive.

2.

Actually Listen

You have two ears and one mouth; a good guide is to listen twice as much as you talk.

Many of us are guilty of simply waiting for the other person to nish talking so that we can nally share our opinion.

While it’s more polite than interrupting, being silent doesn’t mean we’re genuinely paying attention. Fortunately, there are two powerful words that prove you are a strong listener: “sounds like.” Starting your response with, “Sounds like…” forces you to paraphrase your understanding of the other person’s situation and reframe it back to them. is proves you’re actively listening, and most people tend to appreciate that.

3. Punch-up your Proposals

One of the biggest mistakes sellers make with client proposals is giving an overview of what you’ll do/o er and how you’ll do it.

e problem is we haven’t con rmed that we fully understand what the customer’s unique circumstances. Instead, start your proposals by describing your speci c prospect’s issues.

For example: “Sounds like your company has a challenge with A, B and C. And the consequence are X, Y and Z. So you’ll need a solution that will address this. at’s where we can de nitely help.”

When you begin your proposals by de ning your prospective customer’s challenges and objectives, you instill con dence in them that you’ve understood what they need. Whatever solution or product you propose, they’ll understand that it is tailored to problems they took the time to explain to you.

is is a signi cant step towards building trust and being viewed as a trusted advisor.

4. Make it Easy

Customers don’t need more choices, most of them are already overwhelmed. With seemingly unlimited choices from a simple internet search, the last thing you want to is to add more barriers to a sale. Customers want someone to solve their problems and to make their lives easier.

What customers value, is what I call A.I.D.© A: Analyze all the options that are available; I: Interpret those options based on the customer’s unique needs; D: direct them to a maximum of three possible options.

At this point, the customer may feel so impressed with how you’ve narrowed their choices, they might simply ask, “What would you do?”

As a strong listener, we’d then reply with, “Knowing you, here’s what I’d suggest…”   e key is your recommendation is based on what you know of the customer, so it’s likely to be seen as a custom-made solution.

Bottom line: Helping customers make buying decisions is less about being a smooth talker, and more about being a strong listener.

Performance, continued from Page 1

“Inspire” is de ned as the discipline of reaching people’s hearts. Contrast that with “motivation,” which is really appealing to people’s heads.

Rather than trying to create transient reasons to reach expectations, focus on connecting on a deep emotional level to inspire people and embrace a continual process of learning, growth, and higher levels of performance.  is approach will ultimately lead to expectations being blown out of the water.

e biggest challenge encountered in guiding leaders on how to inspire others is the false assumption that to inspire, you need to do something grand. Too o en you look for that upli ing speech, the compelling memo, or the occasional heroic act. All of this is ne when it happens, but inspiration should be a daily practice, and it more o en takes on an unassuming form and is quite o en unnoticed in the moment.

Here are ve action steps to generate peak performance:

1. Lead by example

ere is nothing more inspiring to others than your example. It can mean you made a great, impactful speech or did something amazing, but more o en it is what you do every single day. It’s what you do that people can count on. Simply put, model the behavior you expect from others. Do as I say, not as I do does not work on children, and certainly doesn’t work with the people who look to you for leadership.

Make a list of the most important characteristics, behaviours, expectations, and traits you expect from your people. en make sure you check all the boxes on that list yourself.

2. Show them you care

Do you take the time to show a genuine interest in the people you serve? If you don’t care, frankly don’t even bother! is means understanding their personal goals, interests,

Rather than trying to create transient reasons to reach expectations, focus on connecting on a deep emotional level to inspire people and embrace a continual process of learning.

challenges, and concerns. Carve time out of your schedule to meet with your team - not just to talk business - but to develop a deeper understanding of them and their needs.

3. Express appreciation

It’s amazing how much a few words of encouragement and appreciation can inspire.

How did you feel the last time someone thanked you for a job well done? On the ip side, studies show that a lack of appreciation, real or perceived, is one of the most common reasons given for disengagement or leaving a job.

Even the smallest expression of gratitude can elevate a person’s mood, mindset, and performance. Public recognition and acknowledgment can inspire them to unimagined levels.

Too o en leaders miss the opportunity to share gratitude simply because there are too many other priorities at any particular time. Again, gratitude must be a discipline. You’ve got to prioritize it and carve it into your leadership practice.

4. Share

Leadership is about sharing; Leaders share. Almost anything else you talk about regarding leadership centres on what you’re willing to share and how you’re willing to share.

If you want to touch people’s hearts, there are some essentials you must share unconditionally: Respect, Trust, Loyalty.

By unconditionally, it’s meant with no expectation of return. Too o en you’ll hear something like this: “I’ll show respect when that person deserves it.” is is the not the way. You must set the example.

Respect, Trust, and Loyalty are a leader’s most important assets. What can you possibly accomplish without the respect, trust, and loyalty of the people you serve?

Now, in order to get these things from your team, rst you’ve got to give. You will not always get a direct return on your investment here. But again as you make sharing these things a discipline, you will inspire those who feel empowered by your expression of respect, trust, and loyalty.

In those cases where there is no reciprocity, you will inspire people with your consistency, generosity, and courage.

Two other elements that tend to inspire people when you share them are power and authority

Now these may not be unconditional. You need to manage how much power and authority you do share. is is

not to be proprietary, but rather to assure that you don’t set people up for failure if they’re not yet ready to take on more responsibility.

Having said that, power and authority only expand through sharing. e very act of trusting your team with more power and authority is incredibly inspirational. Make a list of what you’re willing to share and with whom. en do it!

5. Give them time

Everyone knows that time is the most precious commodity anyone has. When you’re willing to devote time to another person, it can be inspiring - not only that person, but to others as well, as they see your willingness to give away your most valuable resource.

You need to make sure the time you do share is sincere, and not just time for time’s sake. Use this time to implement any or all of the other action steps on this list.

Have an objective or goal in mind, although it’s not a bad idea once in a while to focus more on showing personal interest.  Setting time aside to listen and help your team can easily be pushed aside when busy schedules dominate your day-to-day. It must be a priority to meet with the people you serve on a regular basis and give them some of your time.

Long ago Lao Tzu said: “ e wise man does not lay up his treasures. e more he gives to others, the more he has for his own.” is is a powerful lesson in leadership. You’ll notice that every one of these action steps involves giving and sharing. What you are sharing as a leader, ultimately, is your self; your knowledge, wisdom and expertise.

Sharing your true self with others is what leadership is all about. at’s what will most inspire others to share in kind. And as a leader your goal is to touch the hearts of many. at’s how you rally people together to advance the cause of the group.  at’s what a leader’s most fundamental job is.

Feel It Send It

It’s not uncommon for older generations to lament about “the kids these days,” as they tend to do when opining about younger generations’ work ethic and determination.

However, every now and then, you come across someone special from the younger generation doing something truly inspiring; something that makes everyone sit up and take notice.

Such is the case Alex Fortier, the enthusiastic and kindhearted founder/ creator of Feel It Send It, a custom apparel and lifestyle brand dedicated to competitive mountain biking.

Alex started his company in 2021, at the seasoned age of nine. As a competitive mountain biker himself, Alex has been immersed in the sport since he was seven years old. One day, as Alex was watching his favourite riders on YouTube, he noticed that many of them had their own companies, and that sparked an idea in him.

“I was out mountain biking with my dad, and we were in front of a big ‘feature’ (aka a jump) and my dad’s advice to me has always been: ‘if you don’t feel it, don’t send it,’” he explained. en and there, the idea just clicked; Alex decided it was time to start his own clothing company tailored to riders of the sport he loves so much.

“We were coming up with names and I kept going back to what my dad always taught me ‘If you don’t feel it, don’t send it’. So we decided to put a positive spin on it and Feel It Send It was born,” he recalled.

e company produces apparel that caters to mountain bikers and to the many fans of the sport. Its growing collection is comprised of cool headwear, t-shirts, hoodies and socks, emblazoned creatively with the mantra that has fuelled the company from the beginning: Feel It Send It.

Armed with a few printing presses, all Feel It Send It apparel is decorated in-house by the Fortiers. “We produce everything at home, but it’s mostly my dad who decorates the apparel because it’s a bit too dangerous for me, I am not tall enough.”

Alex might not be tall enough yet to handle decorating machinery, but he is certainly big enough to see where he wants to take this company in the future. “I see my business going worldwide. I want it to be a big company that people can rely on and say, ‘man, those are good t shirts,’” said Alex.

In ve years, Alex wants Feel It Send It to be a well known brand in the mountain biking and racing community.

And he’s well on his way. It hasn’t take long for the word to spread. “I think the name grabs a lot of attention, because in mountain biking and in sports, it’s relatable.”

e company presently sells its merchandise through a few channels: directly to consumer through its website at Feelitsendit.com, and through its boutique retail partner in Quebec, Vertige Vélo Ski shops (Vertigeveloski.com).

Last year, the company proudly hit a few milestones. Feel It Send It started its own o cial race team, and trademarked its name. “Our race team is currently composed of two sponsored riders: Alex Fortier and Sacha Wilson, who proudly represent the brand in competitions in Quebec and on the Eastern State Cup circuit in the USA,” explained Christine, Alex’s mom. “ eir passion and determination are truly inspiring, and Alex is super proud to ride under his own brand,”

“Since July 2023, “Feel it Send it” has o cially become a registered trademark. is marks was a signi cant milestone in our journey and our commitment to providing quality products to our community,” explained Alex.

Increasing their brand awareness in the mountain biking world is something big on Alex’s list. rough partnered

ambassadorships with key stakeholders in the sport like Sacha Wilson, Lyam Bibeau and Nathan Messier, the company has an unparalleled commitment to promoting Feel It Send It wherever they go. e company plans to increase its exposure with a bigger prescence and through more ambassador partnerships. To further help nurture the growth of this young company, Feel It Sent It has partnered with a Marketing and PR agency. “We needed a bit of help,” explains Christine. “Right now we are revamping the website to add new features and to make sure that Shopify is optimized with our social media.”
