A unique 80,000 seat stadium, the centrepiece for the 2012 Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events, converting down to a permanent stadium after the Games, when it will become the new home for West Ham United Football Club. Imtech were responsible for the supply, installation and commission of the complete mechanical pipework and plumbing systems for the Stadium. Prefabricated pipework was transported by barge from Tottenham down the River Lea to the Stadium, the first time the waterway had been used for around 75 years. Completion on the 31st March was some four months ahead of the contract completion date of 4th July 2011.

Overall project AFR (accident frequency ratio) at 0.017

Overall project man-hours at just over 4.5 million

Imtech man-hours at 85,538 with one RIDDOR resulting in an AFR of 0.12

First Olympic Stadium in history to be built without loss of life

Imtech were the first contractor to use the local canal for delivery by barge of prefabricated pipework. The canal had previously not been used for over 60 years.

2012 Olympic Velodrome Sport & Leisure Sector Case Study

Mechanical and electrical installation project being delivered by Imtech G&H and Imtech Aqua.

The Velodrome’s concrete lower tier will have 3,500 seats located around the track. A further 2,500 seats will be suspended in two upper tiers within the two curves of the venue’s roof. In between the lower concrete tiers and upper tiers there will be a glass wall, giving spectators a 360-degree view across the Olympic Park and allowing people outside the venue to see the sporting action taking place inside.

The roof features some 16km of cabling and covers an area of 5,000sq m. The Velodrome is one of the most sustainable venues in the Olympic Park and the lightweight roof weighs roughly half that of any other covered Velodrome, helping create a highly-efficient building.

The cable-net roof is joined to the steel structure of the Velodrome which rises in height by 12m from the shallowest point to the highest part of the structure, helping form the distinct double-curved shape which has been designed to reflect the geometry of the cycling track.

Scope of works include:

Arsenal's Emirates Stadium Sport & Leisure Sector Case Study

The spectacular 60,000 seat Emirates Stadium is to be Arsenal Football Club’s new home from July 2006. Imtech G&H Ltd were responsible for the co-ordination and installation of electrical services including package sub stations, stand-by generators, HV/LV distribution system, general and emergency lighting and power, containment systems for data cabling, fire alarms, CCTV & outside broadcast facilities. We were also involved in the fit-out of all 52 catering outlets and the Club Mega Store.

Works commenced in September 2004 and practical completion achieved in July 2006, during this period there was significant change and growth in the electrical works package, which we have contained within the original project period.

The project demanded close coordination. This has been carried out with our own on-site design and CAD department to ensure that the services were installed in the limited space, and to our usual high standard. Close collaboration with other works packages was essential and prevailed throughout the contract period.

To give a feel for the overall size of the project we have installed over 12,500 light fittings, 50 kilometers of Sub Main cables and over 5,400 individual electrical circuits. At its peak over 200 operatives were employed on the site.

Epsom Racecourse Sport & Leisure Sector Case Study

Imtech were responsible for the complete mechanical and electrical installation to the new 11,000 seat grandstand at the world famous Epsom Racecourse.

The building features a new main betting hall with bars and catering, which can also host conferences, banqueting and events. Three first floor function rooms with seating for up to 600 people have flexible uses for conferences and functions, and the second floor comprises 14 private boxes plus a 'Super Box' for just over 100 people for smaller events and race days.

Energy efficiencies include a ground source heat pump, solar control glass, PIR lighting controls, aerated taps and low flush toilets.

A crucial element was to partially rebuild the grandstand in time for the 2008 Derby Festival, which was achieved by completing the 4000 capacity terrace area. The event is attended by around 100,000 people, and work was carefully choreographed to ensure the Festival went ahead as normal, and with minimal impact on the existing facilities.

This project which was secured by competitive tender and consisted of a full mechanical and electrical supply and install.
