PROJECT OVERVIEW

Based on historical research, in 1950 road to Tanah Abang was not designed to be main coridor as the other 4 roads were. This can be seen from the historical map presented below. As for now, Kebon Kacang Street was one of the most important accesses to Tanah Abang, so this matter shall be one of the things to think of.

KEBON KACANG STREET AS THE FIFTH CORRIDOR

Existing Kebon Kacang Street should be revitalize so it can respresent as the fifth corridor with a better quality pedestrian like the 1st - 4th corridors.

Bundaran HI main attraction, the water fountain, can only be seen from afar unless when car free day. Accesibility to experience the water fountain has not really been anticipated enough.

Visual

Current Bundaran HI area, the main axis roads, and Kebon Kacang road to Tanah Abang, all of them do not have same visual element. The organized pedestrian and road stops until Thamrin City Kebon Kacang entrance.

BUNDARAN HI AS MAIN VISTA

Bundaran HI water fountain is the main attraction of this area. We proposed to build new tunnels as access to water fountain. Not only that, public furnitures should be placed around the Bundaran HI water fountain.

Bundaran Hi As The Main Vista Of Five Corridors

NORTH AND SOUTH AXIS as FIRST AND SECOND CORRIDOR

This street becomes important axis that connecting North part and South part of Jakarta and South Jakarta

GRISSEWEG/MADOERA-WEG as SECOND CORRIDOR

This street was named Grisseweg/ Madoera-weg, it represented as an important axis in Batavia that time.

NASSAU BOULEVARD as THIRD CORRIDOR

This street was part of West-East corridor, part of Niewu Gondangdia development back then.

Pedestrian movement study

We did a simulation of pedestrian movement study based of existing pedestrian condition.

Underground tunnel entrance

After we did the pedestrian movement study, we determined tunnel entrances position.

Public space platform

We proposed to build a public space platform near the water fountain to initiate human activity.

Bundaran Hi As Public Space

We proposed to dig the ground around Bundaran HI fountain as well as build tunnels from 4 different directions that would go straight to Bundaran HI. Underground tunnels shall be able to minimize visual distraction as much as possible so that Bundaran HI fountain shall be the main vista. Public platform (picture on the left) and underground pathway (picture below) were also designed so people could enjoy the view of Bundaran HI fountain from new point of view.

New Perspective Of Bundaran Hi

People on the platfrom and underround area would experience a new perspective towards Bundaran HI.

a

Underground Tunnel Section

The tunnel shall connect the main fountain area with existing pedestrian beside the main road. Along the tunnels’ wall, information board and artwork shall be placed.

Bundaran Hi As Seen From Above

To emphasize Bundaran HI as the main vista from above, we also designed the pattern of the road around the water fountain. The pattern was inspired by DKI Jakarta’s gigi balang pattern then we made modification into a new forrm.

Platform Area Section

Platform area was designed to be a relaxation and recreation space. The shape shall encourage people to relax. It was also designed to be shadowed by canopy structure.

b KEBON KACANG STREET VISUAL ZONE B (RIVERSIDE)

The riverside area along Kebon Kacang shall be redesigned as organized public place. We proposed to continue street pattern from zone B to zone A but make it simpler so the shape of riverside platform would stand out. Vehicle way pattern was proposed to blend with pedestrian pathway by using the same hardscapes materials. We hoped that this zone B would be more pedestrian friendly.

b Pattern 1

Kebon Kacang Stret Visual Zone A

Pedestrian quality on Kebon Kacang Street should be as good as pedestrian quality on M.H Thamrin Street and around Bundaran HI Fountain. Therefore, the design pattern on Kebon Kacang street shall continue the pattern of street around Bundaran HI in order to create same visualitzation of urban space. Not only that, pedestrian’s comfortability also should be prioritized, we proposed for the pedestrian’s way to be wider. We also proposed to place canopy at some parts so that people can use the shadow under it to rest.

Pedestrian pathway 2.4 m

Pattern 3

Pedestrian pathway 1.8 m
