content, requiring them to take down the video from their social media handles.

The case is scheduled for its next hearing on July 9.

The recordings were purportedly shared on social media.

Filed by Delhi-based lawyer Vaibhav Singh, the PIL requests the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate and register an FIR against those involved in the alleged recording and

dissemination of the court proceedings.

The plea argues that these actions put the trial court judge's life at risk.

Singh's petition names several individuals, including Akshay Malhotra, social media user Nagrik-India Jeetega, Promila Gupta, Vineeta Jain, and Dr Arunesh Kumar Yadav.

The petition claims they willfully disobeyed the Video Conferencing Rules set by the high court.

"Several members of the Aam

Aadmi Party, along with other opposition party members, intentionally and deliberately recorded audio and video of the court proceedings with the willful intention to malign and manipulate the court proceedings," states the plea.

The PIL alleges a preplanned conspiracy orchestrated by CM Kejriwal and his party members to record and share the court proceedings. It calls for a thorough investigation to identify and punish those responsible for the unauthorised recordings.

India’s rising economic clout makes it key constituent of G7 meet

New Delhi, June 14 (IANS)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is presently in Italy on his first foreign visit after being re-elected as the PM for the third time in a row to attend the 50th Summit of the G7 countries -- Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US.

This is PM Modi's fifth consecutive participation at the

G7 Summit.

Given the increasing economic clout of India, the country cannot be outside the major policy issues confronting the Western economies.

How India compares with G7 nations in terms of GDP: According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, India ranks fourth in terms of GDP when compared to the Group of 7 nations. India has also emerged as the fastest-growing major economy in the world with a growth rate of over 7 per cent over the last three years amid the global slowdown.

Below is the chart of GDP rankings of India along with the G7 countries (USD billion):

1. USA (28,783)

2. Germany (4,590)

3. Japan (4,112)

4. India (3,942) 5. UK (3,502) 6. France (3,132) 7. Italy (2,332) 8. Canada (2,242)

PM Modi is participating in the G7 Outreach Summit in which the focus is on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, among others.

“It will be an opportunity to bring greater synergy between the outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India’s Presidency and the G7 Summit, and deliberate on issues which are crucial for the Global South," PM Modi said in a statement.

The Prime Minister is also holding bilateral talks with major world leaders on the sidelines of the event with an aim to strengthen India's diplomatic ties.

countries to make AI transparent, fair, secure, accessible and responsible,” PM Modi added.

French President Emmanuel Macron also hailed PM Modi's initiative on AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

Last month, PM Modi said that India will see mega innovations in new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), thrust on local manufacturing and creating digital public infrastructure (DPI)

for the world in near future.

A robust framework on AI is ready to deal with its misuse and public consultations on the framework will begin soon.

The government worked on a draft regulatory framework for AI amid concerns over a rise in deepfakes and user harm associated with the new technology.

The aim is to harness AI for economic growth and address potential risks and harms by setting up the guardrails.

The counsel representing the National Testing Agency (NTA) said that these candidates may choose to appear in a re-test likely to be held on June 23, adding that the counselling schedule announced earlier will not be disturbed since the results of the re-test would be declared by June 30.

The actual marks obtained by these 1,563 candidates without normalisation would be emailed to them, and if any of these candidates choose not to appear in the re-test, results based on actual marks will be treated as final, submitted NTA before the Bench, also comprising Justice Sandeep Mehta.

Taking the aforesaid into account, the apex court decided to close

the issues pertaining to the grant of grace marks in the NEET UG exam.

However, it issued notice to NTA and others on a plea seeking cancellation of the NEET exam held on May 5 and tagged the matter with pending petitions, which are coming up for hearing on July 8.

Multiple pleas have been filed before the apex court seeking directions for the conduct of an expeditious and thorough investigation of the “malpractices and fraud involved” in the NEET examination and a stay on declaration of results till the investigations on paper leak are completed. Further, the pleas sought directions to NTA to recall the results of the examination conducted on May 5 and conduct the examination afresh after issuing due public notice.

India’s forex kitty surges to new lifetime high of $655.8 billion

Mumbai, June 14 (IANS) India's foreign exchange reserves surged by $4.3 billion during the week ended June 7 to scale a lifetime high of $655.8 billion, according to the latest data released by the RBI on Friday. The country’s forex kitty has broken the earlier record of $651.5 billion, as of May 31, that was announced by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on June 7, and has been rising steadily in recent weeks. "India’s external sector remains resilient and overall, we remain confident of meeting our external financing requirements comfortably," Das said at a press conference after the monetary policy meeting last week. India, with an expected 15.2 per cent share in world remittances in 2024, also continues to be the largest recipient of remittances globally. Overall, the current account deficit for 2024-25 is expected to remain well within its sustainable level, he added.

The Springfield Anglican College unveils Red Bench to Spread Awareness and Help End Domestic Violence

On Monday 10 June, The Springfield Anglican College, Secondary Campus, unveiled its new Red Bench. The Red Bench project is an initiative of the Red Rose Foundation and aims to raise awareness and community education on Domestic and Family Violence in a vibrant and permanent way.

Mr Steven Morris, College Principal, says “The Springfield Anglican College is proud to stand alongside more than 300 other organisations that have also erected or painted red benches around the country. Our Student Leaders have led this project which sends a clear and permanent reminder that we can all ‘take a seat’ to take a stand

against domestic violence.”

Ms Vanessa Fowler is the CoChair of the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council and Chair of the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation andspoke to secondary students at a College assembly.

Ms Fowler says, “It is wonderful to see The Springfield Anglican College take part in this initiative against domestic and family violence. It’s important that we start speaking to our young people about the difference between respectful and unhealthy relationships from an early age, in age-appropriate ways. It’s vital that they are aware of their language and actions, and the impact these can have on

their friends. In order to have a generational change, we need to instill values of respectful friendships and caring for one another from the earliest of ages.”

The Springfield Anglican College’s Red Bench is situated in a visible yet peaceful corner of the Secondary Campus, adjacent to the College’s Old Chapel area, Rotary Peace Pole, and front lawn to allow people a quiet place to reflect.

The Red Bench was blessed by College Chaplain, Rev Jonathan Kemp in the presence of the College’s Principal, Executive Leadership Team, and College Student Leaders.

Year 12 Service and Sustainability Captains, Lilli Sayer and Nevaeh

Kailani championed the Red Bench project at the College. Nevaeh says, “We were very passionate about the Red Bench project. It is a way that we, as a community, can stand against domestic violence as well as raise awareness for victims and survivors who may be suffering in silence. We hope that this encourages victims and survivors to speak up or at least feel supported and not alone.”

Lilli says, “The Year 12 Leaders painted this bench together. It reminded me that when you look around, you never know what someone is going through. There could be someone right next to you dealing with domestic violence issues and you might

not even know. The Red Bench shows that we are there for each other, and it will hopefully help them to feel loved and know there are people who care for them, for many years to come.”

The staff and students at The Springfield Anglican College are committed to working together to #Change the Ending

The Red Bench Project was launched in 2019 by the Red Rose Foundation.

Kangana Ranaut slapgate: Case filed against CISF constable in Punjab

Chandigarh, June 7 (IANS) A day after Bollywood actress and newly-elected BJP MP Kangana Ranaut was allegedly slapped by a CISF constable at the Chandigarh Airport, an FIR was registered against the accused constable, Kulwinder Kaur, in Punjab on Friday in connection with the case.

Kaur has been booked under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, no arrest has been made so far.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable was initially detained and later suspended after Kangana on Thursday told the CISF officials on her arrival at the Indira

Gandhi International Airport in Delhi that she was slapped and abused by a woman constable at the Chandigarh Airport before she boarded the flight to Delhi.

“I was hit on the face, abused. I am safe but concerned about terrorism in Punjab,” Ranaut said in a video uploaded on her X handle with the caption, “Shocking rise in terror and violence in Punjab.”

Terming the incident as unfortunate and not in good taste, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar said on Friday that any form of violence as a means to express dissent is unacceptable and needs condemnation.

Meanwhile, farmer unions the SKM (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee have announced their support for the suspended CISF constable, claiming that Kangana had called Kulwinder “Khalistan Kaur”.

The constable, who has been on duty at the airport for the past

two-and-a-half years, in fact, was seen on television channels after the incident, stating that she was upset because of the kind of statements made by Kangana during the farmers' agitation.

“She (Kangana) made a statement that the farmers were sitting in protest for Rs 100. Will she go and sit there? My mother was sitting there and protesting when she made this statement,” Kaur added.

It is learnt that the constable was also unhappy because Kangana referred to the protesting farmers as 'Khalistanis'. CISF DIG Vinay Kajla was quoted by the media as saying, “It was an emotional outburst on her (the constable) part. She is apologetic about the incident. Her husband is also in the CISF and posted with the dog squad here.”

In the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, Kangana defeated her nearest rival Vikramaditya Singh of the Congress by 74,755 votes from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

After identifying the body, the Kamakshipalya police informed Renukaswamy’s parents.

Darshan’s role came to the fore during the investigation by the police.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Darshan had called the Chitradurga Fan Association president and asked him to find out the whereabouts of Renukaswamy and bring him to Bengaluru.

Police are suspecting that Darshan had also assaulted Renukaswamy. The cause of death is being stated as a blow to the head with a weapon, police said. Further investigation is on in the case.

To secure user privacy, third parties provide limited analytics instead of raw GPS data. The system uses sophisticated algorithms to calculate comparative metrics that can serve use cases like congestion levels. These services can include traffic diversion and optimal traffic light timing deployment. For more sophisticated parameters like queue length and waiting time, which are useful for optimal traffic light timing deployment, raw data processing is necessary.

Jaipur, June 15 (IANS) The Rajasthan Police on Friday resorted to lathicharge to disperse the NSUI activists, who while protesting against the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 exam, tried to enter inside the Collectorate in Kota.

Earlier, around 300 NSUI activists gathered outside the Circuit House in Kota and from there, they took out a foot march to the Collectorate. Police had put up barricades outside the Collectorate and stopped the protesting NSUI activists from moving forward. Some workers reportedly climbed on the barricades, demanding to go inside. Meanwhile, there was also a scuffle between the police and the protestors after which, the police resorted to lathicharge and drove them away.

Rajasthan NSUI President Vinod Jakhar said that the dreams of

lakhs of children to become doctors are being shattered. "The false arguments of the government will not work. The NEET paper was leaked. It should be cancelled and a re-examination should be conducted.

District chief of the Congress' student wing, Vishal Mewada said that the students had come to protest peacefully. Our demand was to meet the collector and submit a memorandum. The police stopped us from going inside. When some activists tried, police resorted to lathicharge, he said.

In Ajmer, ABVP activists demanded the cancellation of the NEET UG exam and a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities. Students led by the ABVP took out a rally and reached the Collectorate demanding the cancellation of the premedical entrance test and a CBI investigation.

Student leader Asuram Dukia said, "The paper came into the market half an hour before the exam. The whole group was caught in Bihar, which bought papers for Rs 60 crore.

License plate error of Rolls-Royce which Maha CM & DyCMs rode rattles Singhania in Europe

Mumbai, June 14 (IANS) When the swanky new Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR) phase II was inaugurated on June 10, Raymond Group Chairman Gautam V. Singhania happily loaned his gleaming 94-year-old vintage Rolls-Royce 20/25 for the event.

Impressed by the sparkling old beauty, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, gave it an eyeful and then plonked on its comfy seats for the short ride on the MCR -- blissfully unaware of

a tiny error on its number plate.

The jaunt in the car of a bygone era caught the eyes of the nation -- and some alert RTO officials and citizens, too -- who made a few discreet inquiries that allegedly threw up some unnerving details.

After getting the tip, a Thane social worker Binu Varghese delved into the RR 20/25’s antecedents with the help of RTO officials and discovered that the open-top car was probably plying ‘illegally’ on the roads. Among the shockers that emerged were: the enchanting RR’s ‘fitness’ validity had expired in January 2024, taxes had not been paid from April 2022, Insurance expired in January 2023, and no PUC after September 2022!Further deep dive revealed that the RR’s papers

had not been transferred from Maharashtra to Telangana for over two years despite getting NOC, and its number plate (MH04-JU-4733) actually belonged to some truck!

“This means that the car was moving around illegally and even carried some top VVIPs. In case of any mishap, nothing could be done legally as the vehicle was like a ‘laawaris’ (orphan),” Varghese and the officials pointed out.

Upon learning of the purported irregularities, IANS contacted the Raymond Group authorities, for a full reality check on the ravishing RR that attained more fame than the MCR on June 10. Stunned by the claims, a company official informed Singhania -- currently in Europe -- of the purported details of his pet RR.

Amaravati farmers end four-yearlong protest as Naidu govt sworn-in

Amaravati, June 12 (IANS) With the formation of the Chandrababu Naidu-led government in Andhra Pradesh, farmers of Amaravati on Wednesday called off their fouryear-long protest against three capitals move of the previous YSR Congress government.

Hours after Naidu and his Council of Ministers took oath at a ceremony at Vijayawada, the farmers removed their protest camps in villages.

The farmers, including women, had been protesting for 1,631 days, demanding the YSR Congress government to develop Amaravati as the sole capital.

The protest started in December 2019 after Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that his government would develop three state capitals, reversing the decision of the previous TDP government to develop Amaravati as the only

state capital.

The Jagan Mohan Reddy government planned to develop Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital, and keep Amaravati only as a legislative capital.

The farmers of 29 villages, who had given 33,000 acres of their land under a land pooling system when the TDP was in power, came out on the streets. They had been continuing the protest in different forms.

The Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi (APS), which was spearheading the movement against three capitals, undertook two padyatras during the last two years to mobilise public support for their demand.

Earlier in the day, the farmers watched on specially installed screens the live telecast of the swearing-in of Chandrababu Naidu and his Cabinet colleagues.

At the meeting of newly-elected MLAs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Tuesday, Naidu declared that Amaravati will be developed as the sole state capital. He said Visakhapatnam

will be developed as a financial capital and Kurnool will also be developed in all respects.

TDP’s allies Jana Sena and BJP are also for developing Amaravati as the sole state capital.

The return of Naidu to power has given new hopes to farmers and others, who were fighting for justice. The TDP chief had envisioned Amaravati on the banks of the Krishna river as a dream capital and a world-class city about a decade ago. The works on residential quarters and other components of the mega project had come to an abrupt halt in 2019 a few months after the YSRCP came to power.

The foundation stone for Amaravati was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2015 when TDP was part of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Naidu had got the master plan for Amaravati prepared by Singapore. With nine theme cities and 27 townships, it was planned in an area of 217 square kilometres with the development in three phases –seed area or core capital, capital city, and capital region.

My vision is to make Andhra Pradesh zero-poverty state: CM Naidu

Tirupati, June 13 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu asserted on Thursday that his vision was to make Andhra Pradesh a zeropoverty state.

After offering prayers at Tirumala temple, he told media persons that he would make every effort to create wealth and ensure its distribution among the poor.

“I want to see the Indian community on top in the world and 35 per cent of Telugu in the Indian community as number one. We should work for a zeropoverty nation, zero-poverty state and zero-poverty district,” he said.

Naidu, who took oath as the Chief Minister on Wednesday, said he prayed for the prosperity of the state and all Telugu people. Underlining the need to remove economic inequalities, he said this was possible only through government policies.

He recalled the initiatives taken by him as the Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh in this direction. “CBN 1.0 started in 1995. We took governance, which was limited to the Secretariat, to the doorsteps of people. There was development and everyone has seen its results. World leaders came to Hyderabad. I did not invite them. They came on their

own. They come wherever good work is done,” he said.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) termed the family system as the biggest asset of the country. “The family recharges your energy, gives you security and happiness. The family system of India is a model for the entire world,” he said and mentioned that family proved to be his biggest support when he was in jail.

CM Naidu, who is set to assume charge as the Chief Minister on Thursday evening, made it clear that there would be no witchhunting but those who have done wrong will be punished as per law.

He remarked that God has also ordained to protect good and punish evil.

CM Naidu, who led the NDA to a landslide victory, termed it a historic mandate. “We have never seen such a huge public mandate. The strike rate of 93 per cent never happened in the state or the country’s history,” he claimed. Recalling his attachment to the Tirumala temple since his early days, he said it was the blessings of the Lord that he came up in life to become the Chief Minister and play a key role in national politics. Referring to the failed assassination attempt by Maoists near the same temple in 2003, he said the Lord saved him from claymore mines. “No one would have survived. He saved me so that I serve the state and the people,” he said.

The TDP supremo said he prays to Venkateswara Swamy every morning to seek blessings. He alleged that the previous government tried to damage the sanctity of Tirumala and remarked that while other gods punish sinners after death, Venkateswara Swamy punishes in this life.

Analysis: Four years after Galwan, China sticks to old habits

New Delhi, June 14 (IANS) June 15th marks the fourth anniversary of a significant event wherein India and China experienced military casualties along the contentious 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), the first such incident since the 1962 India-China war.

Preceding the incident, tensions had been escalating for several weeks in the high-altitude, frigid Galwan valley in the Ladakh region.

China's actions included the installation of tents and observation posts at patrolling point PP14, an area traditionally patrolled by the Indian Army. With both sides deploying increasing numbers of troops, the border confrontations took an unprecedented turn when the Chinese attacked Indian soldiers using what the Ministry of Defence described in 2021 as 'unorthodox weapons,' including rocks and rods studded with nails or bound in barbed wire.

In response, Indian soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat, utilising sticks and clubs, adhering to the de facto border code of not using firearms. Nonetheless, this deadly clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and the capture of 10 more by the Chinese, who were subsequently released following diplomatic and military negotiations.

Despite widespread reports of Chinese casualties and Beijing's eventual acknowledgment, the initial disclosure did not include specific numbers.

It was not until February of the following year that the Chinese military news outlet, PLA Daily, admitted to the deaths of four Chinese soldiers. Among them was one individual who purportedly drowned while crossing the Galwan River. Even after significant efforts by the Chinese government to conceal the number of soldiers killed in its aggressive maneuvers, the disclosure emerged only after prolonged endeavors.

This was evidenced by reports indicating that the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs pressured the families of soldiers who died at Galwan to forego traditional burial rites and in-person funeral ceremonies.

Instead, they were urged to opt for cremation, ostensibly to obscure the precise death toll, citing Covid-19 concerns.

Moreover, the following month saw the arrest of Chinese blogger and former journalist Qiu Ziming, who had raised doubts about the officially reported casualty figures and implied that the actual number might be higher on Weibo. His arrest marked the inaugural case under a newly enforced law, effective March 1, which penalised actions deemed to "infringe on the reputation and honor of revolutionary heroes," carrying a potential sentence of up to three years.

However, in February 2022, The Klaxon, an Australian newspaper, released the results of a year-long investigation conducted by a team of social media researchers.

Their findings exposed that the Chinese government had significantly underestimated the number of casualties at Galwan.

According to the investigation, up to 38 Chinese soldiers had perished while crossing the turbulent, sub-zero river in the darkness of the night.

The Chinese government's attempts to distort the true extent of the fatal consequences resulting from its geopolitical and military actions have occurred previously. Renowned for its lack of transparency, the authoritarian regime in China has a history of concealing crucial information.

In the case of the 1962 IndiaChina war, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) took more than three decades to disclose its casualty figures, providing a notably distorted number in 1994.

The PLA reported 722 soldiers killed and 1,697 wounded. Former Army Chief General VK Singh referenced this delay while accusing China of concealing its casualties during the Galwan clash.

This pattern extends to the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 1979, which was prompted, in part, by Vietnam's incursion into Cambodia the previous year.

Although the main armed conflict lasted only a month, hostilities continued into the 1980s.

Remarkably, the Chinese Foreign Ministry website omits any mention of this war, instead vaguely stating that relations between the two countries deteriorated during the 1980s and 90s without specifying the reasons. Vietnam claims that 42,000 Chinese soldiers died in the conflict, while some foreign scholars estimate the Chinese casualty figures at 25,000 dead

and 37,000 injured. Similarly, the Chinese involvement in the Korean War aligns with this pattern of obfuscation.

It is important to emphasise that the Chinese regime's structure entails that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) does not act autonomously but rather requires political authorisation from higher authorities.

This observation is supported by numerous instances. For instance, in July 2016, Chinese UN peacekeepers stationed in South Sudan purportedly deserted their positions during clashes between factions loyal to the President and rebel forces.

This abandonment resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians and instances of sexual abuse.

Coming back to Galwan, the Chinese aggression on the night of June 15 was a plainly premeditated attack, as opposed to a flare-up in the heat of the moment.

This is evinced by the high level of preparedness that the Chinese side displayed.

For weeks before the incident, they had been ramping up infrastructure around the area, leading to objections by the Indian side, eventually ensuing in a consensus agreed on June 6. However, they violated it by continuing their activities, provoking an Indian delegation led by Colonel Santosh Babu of the 16 Bihar Regiment to demand that they retreat.

This is when they launched their attack, equipped with spiked clubs and other such weapons, shielded with protective gear anticipating retaliation, while a number of Chinese soldiers positioned themselves at a higher ground to strike their Indian counterparts on a relatively lower ground with stones.

Subsequent to this incident, eighteen rounds of Corps Commanders' meetings were convened, leading to a partial withdrawal of forces and the establishment of military buffer zones.

In February 2021, both parties announced their intent for coordinated disengagement and de-escalation.

However, despite these endeavors, China persists in its refusal to withdraw from the Depsang Plains and Demchok areas, previously within the patrolling domain of the Indian Army, aiming to normalise this as a new status quo.

India’s political landscape: A historic term, security challenges, and global diplomacy

Narendra Modi's third term: Historic milestone

Narendra Modi's swearing-in for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister marks a significant achievement in Indian political history. Equating Jawaharlal Nehru's record, Modi's victory underscores his continued influence and the trust placed in him by the electorate. The ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended by over 8,000 guests including international leaders, highlighted the global interest in India's political direction. Diverse council of ministers

Modi's new Council of Ministers is notable for its inclusivity and strategic appointments. With 72 members, including 11 from NDA partners, the cabinet reflects a blend of experienced politicians and new faces. The inclusion of ChandraSekhar Pemmasani, the wealthiest candidate from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as a Minister of State, signifies a shift towards integrating influential economic figures into governance. This diverse team is poised to tackle India's multifaceted challenges, from economic reforms to social policies.

Persistent security threats in Jammu and Kashmir

Despite the celebratory mood in the capital, Jammu and Kashmir remain tense. Intelligence warnings of potential terror attacks have led to heightened

security measures. Recent attacks have injured several soldiers and police officials, underscoring the region's volatile situation. The neutralization of two terrorists by security forces highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain stability in the area. This persistent threat requires a robust response from the central government to ensure safety and peace.

Tragic repatriation from Kuwait In a poignant development, the bodies of 14 of the 45 Indians who perished in a building fire in Kuwait were repatriated. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh played a crucial role in coordinating these efforts, expressing deep sadness over the tragedy. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities of Indian workers abroad and the need for better protective measures. State-level political shifts

In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's allocation of portfolios to his 25-member Cabinet, including significant roles for Pawan Kalyan and Nara Lokesh, signals a strategic approach to governance. Initiatives like recruiting teachers and reviving the 'Anna Canteens' program reflect a focus on grassroots development. Odisha witnessed a political transition with Mohan Charan Majhi being sworn in as the new BJP Chief Minister, attended by outgoing CM Naveen Patnaik, symbolizing political goodwill and continuity. Global diplomatic engagements On the international front, Modi's participation in the G7 Summit in Italy emphasized India's role in global diplomacy. Addressing concerns of the Global South, Modi discussed AI governance, energy, and African issues with world leaders.

Australian Defence Force recruitment to be opened to non-citizens

Canberra, June 4 (IANS)

Foreigners who have lived in Australia for at least 12 months will be eligible to join the nation's armed forces from 2025, the federal government has announced.

Richard Marles, the minister

for defence and deputy prime minister, and Defence Personnel

Minister Matt Keogh announced the initiative on Tuesday in Canberra, saying it would help grow the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Xinhua news agency reported.

Under the expanded eligibility criteria, New Zealanders who are permanent residents of Australia and have lived in the country for at least 12 months will be able to join the ADF from July 1. Starting in 2025, citizens from all other countries who meet the

same criteria will become eligible to serve in the ADF.

Applicants must not have served in a foreign military in the previous two years and will be subject to ADF entry standards and security requirements. Keogh said in a joint statement with Marles that expanding eligibility would help reverse ADF recruitment shortfalls. According to the National Defence Strategy, which was launched by Marles in April, the ADF is currently facing a shortage of 4,400 enlisted personnel after achieving 80 percent of recruitment targets between 2020-21 and 2022-23.

Australia seeks inputs on developing ‘new roadmap’ for closer economic engagement with India

New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) The Australian government has invited public submissions as it prepares a new roadmap for the country's closer economic engagement with India. The roadmap will not only take stock of Australia's existing economic initiatives with India but also explore innovative ways of doing more together.

"There has never been a better time to engage economically with India: already the most populous country in the world, India's economy is growing at pace. In 2023, India was our fourth-largest export market and is on track to be the world's third-largest economy by the end of this decade. Australia is well positioned to both benefit from and contribute to India’s growth story – if we target our efforts wisely," believes Australia's

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

The Department mentioned that work on both sides in recent years has delivered results, including through the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), the opening of a Consulate General in Bengaluru - which was matched by India's in Brisbane - and the establishment of the Centre for Australia India Relations. Alongside this, the next stage of trading relationship, the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), is currently under negotiation between the two countries.

As the relationship between Quad partners continues to expand both strategically and economically, DFAT detailed that there have been as many as 23 Australian ministerial visits to India and 15 Indian ministerial visits to Australia since May 2022.

Besides the "high tempo of senior Ministerial visits," the IndiaAustralia 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue, the annual Foreign Ministers Framework Dialogue, joint hosting of the

Indian Ocean Conference in February 2024, and working closely on the Quad initiatives have been the highlights of partnership between India and Australia.

"Our partnership with India will be crucial to the Albanese government's vision for 'A Future Made in Australia'. The new roadmap will help secure Australia's place in a changing global economic and strategic landscape and help make Australia a renewable energy superpower," stated DFAT.

The public submissions, which are open till August 5, aim at seeking inputs to the roadmap from voices in Australia and India, especially from businesses working in both countries, research centres and academia, members of IndianAustralian communities, Indiafocused NGOs and civil society organisations, state and territory governments, etc.

DFAT said that it will also be conducting consultations in state capitals in Australia and in India.

Police warns of frequent road accidents during winter afternoons

Sydney, June 6 (IANS) Police in the Australian state of Victoria on Thursday called on motorists to take extra care, as crash data suggested that afternoon is a dangerous period during winter.

Victoria Police noted in a statement that over the last five years, on average, 43 per cent of collisions resulting in injury occurred between midday and 6:00 p.m. local time in winter, Xinhua news agency reported. There were around 7,800 injury collisions recorded during the

time period between 2019 and 2023.

According to the state police, the period from 12 to 6 p.m. on Friday was regarded as the most dangerous time between June and August overall, with around 1,200 injury collisions and 21 fatal collisions registered over the five years.

On regional roads, injury collisions most commonly occurred on Saturdays between 12 and 6 p.m. local time during the winter months.

Victoria Police noted that the authority's presence would be highly visible on major arterial roads and paths leading to alpine areas, given the snow season set to commence this weekend. Last year, police issued more than

Canberra, June 10 (IANS)

Australia will attend an international conference on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the government has confirmed.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Monday announced that Anne Aly, the minister for early childhood development and minister for youth, will represent Australia at the conference in Amman, Jordan, that has been convened by Jordan, Egypt and the United Nations (UN), Xinhua news agency reported.

Wong said that Egyptian-born Aly was chosen because of her lived experience and understanding of the conflict in the Middle East. They said in a joint statement that Australia has been clear that Israel must comply with the orders of the International Court of Justice and allow the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to Gaza and reiterated calls for the war to end.

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic. Over 1 million Palestinians are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, and around 1.7 million people have been displaced, many several times over. Humanitarian access remains grossly inadequate," Aly said.

Since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023, the Australian government has committed 62.5 million Australian dollars (41.1 million US dollars) in humanitarian assistance to the region, including 41 million Australian dollars (27.0 million US dollars) to address urgent needs in Gaza.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese dialled PM Narendra Modi Thursday afternoon, congratulating him on his electoral victory in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

"Great to speak with Narendra Modi today to congratulate him on his election victory.

Australia and India are close friends, with strong strategic, economic and cultural ties. We look forward to growing our partnership in 2024 and beyond," Albanese posted on X after the phone call.

Having placed India at the heart of Australia's approach to the IndoPacific and beyond, the Albanese

government continues to deepen the multifaceted Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Albanese has repeatedly emphasised that there are enormous advantages and real opportunities for Australian business as India stays on course to become the third-largest economy in the world in the coming years.

Earlier this week, IANS reported that the Australian government has invited public submissions as it prepares a new roadmap for the country's closer economic engagement with India.

Papua New Guinea thanks India as humanitarian aid reaches Port Moresby

Port Moresby, June 14 (IANS)

Emphasising that "a friend in need is a friend indeed", Papua New Guinea expressed deep gratitude towards India as the 19-tonne relief assistance dispatched by New Delhi touched down at the Jackson International Airport on Friday. India had last month announced

an immediate relief assistance of $1 million to support relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Papua New Guinea which was devastated by a massive landslide on May 24.

The landslide in Enga Province claimed over 2,000 lives and caused major destruction and loss of life.

Indian origin man shoots brother dead, injures mother, kills self in New York

New York, June 10 (IANS) An Indian-origin man here shot his brother dead, injured his mother, and then killed himself, according to police.

Karamjit Multani, 33, shot his brother Vipanpal, 27, on Sunday in their home in the Richmond Hill neighbourhood and went out and turned the gun on himself at a place about two kilometres away, police said.

Police said that when they went to their house after getting a call about a shooting, they found Vipanpal "unresponsive" with several gunshot wounds, and their 52-year-old mother with an injury to her stomach. Later, Multani was found dead near a street corner with a gunshot wound to his head and a gun nearby, according to police. The mother, who was not identified by name, was taken to a

hospital where she was said to be out of danger.

Richmond Hill has a large concentration of Asians, most of them of Indian descent from India or the Caribbean, accounting for 26 per cent of the area's population.

According to the city, "The southern portion of Richmond Hill is home to several tight-knit communities, such as the Punjabi Sikh".

CBS New York reported that the men’s father, Bhupinder Multani, told the station that he did not know what set off his older son.

Asked by the station’s reporter if the sons had any issues, he said: "Not big problems. Sometimes little disagreements, no problems."

He said that the family had settled in for a quiet evening with pizza when Multani opened the door to his brother’s room and shot him without warning. The father said that he ran to the house of a neighbour to seek help. The neighbour told the station that when she entered the house she

found Vipanpal wounded and pleading for help.

"He told me, 'Please, don't let me die'," the neighbour said, and died later "in my hands".

Jaspreet Singh, the brotherin-law of the two men, told the station that Multani "was one of the nicest, coolest guys, always joking around".

"What could be going on in his mind to explode like that," he wondered. The New York Post reported that, according to his family, Multani was the father of three and was financially sound with no known problems. A neighbour, Alvin Debieen, told the New York Daily News that they thought it was firecrackers going off when they heard the sound, but when they heard the police sirens, "we kind of just figured someone was shot".

"It had to be something really serious or he just snapped," Debieen said. A neighbour from where Multani’s body was found, told the newspaper that "His body was right there laid out in the open and there was a lot of blood".

Lankan President thanks India and Bangladesh for providing assistance during crisis

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS)

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday expressed gratitude to India and Bangladesh for providing assistance as the island nation tries to recover from a serious economic crisis.

Wickremesinghe met Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on Monday after attending Sunday's swearingin ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two leaders engaged in bilateral discussions with the Bangladesh PM assuring Dhaka's commitment to support Sri Lanka's agricultural modernisation programme.

"Recalling the support received from both Bangladesh and India,

Wickremesinghe expressed gratitude for their assistance," Lankan President's Media Division said in a statement after the meeting.

It also mentioned that Hasina has assured her country's commitment to assist Sri Lanka with its plan to modernise agriculture.

Wickremesinghe affirmed his commitment to dispatch a delegation of Lankan agricultural experts to Bangladesh with an aim of studying Bangladesh's agricultural modernisation programme through cooperative methods and gather valuable insights to enhance Sri Lanka's own agricultural modernisation efforts.

The leaders also deliberated on the prospect of signing a free trade agreement between the two countries. Wickremesinghe highlighted the potential for such an agreement following the conclusion of the India Free Trade Agreement.

Pak PM sends ‘felicitations’ to Indian PM Modi; Nawaz Sharif says let’s replace hate with hope

Islamabad, June 10 (IANS)

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday sent "felicitations" to Narendra Modi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time.

In a short message on X, Shehbaz wrote, "Felicitations to Narendra Modi on taking oath as Prime Minister of India."

Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers took oath in a historic ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi on Sunday.

While dozens of global leaders have sent congratulatory messages, Pakistan PM's message to his Indian counterpart holds quite a significance considering the tense relationship between the neighbouring nations during the past two terms of the Modi government.

"PM Shehbaz's felicitation message shows clearly the rift that persists between the two countries. The message didn't show any sign of warmth or express hopes of working towards normalisation of relations between the two countries. Instead, it seemed more like a forced formality that the premier had to undertake," said senior political analyst Javed Siddique. It should also be noted that PM Modi did not extend an invitation to Pakistan to participate in the swearing-in ceremony like he did in 2014 when then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was invited.

"Additionally, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh pledged to direct private investors from Bangladesh towards investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, further fostering economic cooperation between the two countries. Consideration was given to the initiation of a passenger ferry service connecting Sri Lanka and Bangladesh," the Lankan President's office said in a statement after the meeting.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister extended an invitation to Ranil Wickremesinghe to attend the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangladesh. However, Wickremesinghe conveyed that, as the conference will be held during the election period in Sri Lanka, the country's Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Foreign Minister Ali Sabri will represent Sri Lanka at the event.

The Bangladesh PM also expressed her satisfaction with the progress of Sri Lanka's economy under the leadership of Wickremesinghe.

is also seen in the messages sent to PM Modi on Monday by PM Shehbaz Sharif and by his elder brother Nawaz Sharif, the President of the country's ruling party, Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N).

In his message to the Indian PM, Nawaz Sharif congratulated him on assuming office for the third consecutive time and expressed hope of "replacing hate with hope" for better future progress of the two nations.

"My warm felicitations to Modi Ji on assuming office for the third time. Your party's success in recent elections reflects the confidence of the people in your leadership. Let us replace hate with hope and seize the opportunity to shape the destiny of the two billion people of South Asia," he posted on X.

While PM Shehbaz enjoys a close relationship with the country's powerful establishment currently running a coalition government, his elder brother is seen as a leader who refuses to fall in line with the country's military. Having failed to secure a majority to form the government after the general polls held in February this year, Nawaz Sharif is managing party politics through his daughter and Chief Minister of Punjab province, Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

PM Modi's close relations with Nawaz Sharif also became evident when he made a surprise visit to Lahore in 2015 on the latter's invitation and even spent time at Sharif's Jati Umra residence.

Analysts feel that considering the stance taken by the BJP-led NDA during campaigning over the past few weeks, it is unlikely that the relationship between the two countries will improve during the third term of the Modi government.

Japan declares 7 missing crew dead after April MSDF helicopter collision

Tokyo, June 11 (IANS) Japan's Defence Ministry on Tuesday declared dead seven crewmen listed as missing since the fatal collision of two Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF) patrol helicopters in April.

"I feel sorry as we searched hard for them. I'm also heartbroken for their families," Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said at a press conference, adding that

the MSDF will continue to search for the bodies of the crewmen and the helicopter wreckage. The death toll from the collision rose to eight, with only one body recovered so far, reports Xinhua news agency. The two SH-60K helicopters, each carrying four MSDF members, collided and crashed during a night drill on April 20 over the sea near Izu Islands, about 600 kilometres south of Tokyo.

This type of helicopter has had several accidents during nighttime training flights, including a fatal crash in 2017 and a collision off the southern island of Amami Oshima in 2021 when no injuries were reported, local media reported.

Francis to visit India at an early date.

"Met Pope Francis on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. I admire his commitment to serve people and make our planet better. Also invited him to visit India," the Prime Minister posted on X after meeting the Pope at the G7 Summit's Outreach Session in Borgo Egnazia.

As he entered the meeting venue and met the world leaders, the Pope was greeted with a hug from PM Modi.

In October 2021, the Pope

received PM Modi during a private audience at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, which was also the first meeting between an Indian Prime Minister and the Pope in more than two decades.

In June 2000, late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had last visited the Vatican and met the then Pope, John Paul II. India and The Holy See have friendly relations dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1948. India is also home to the second-largest Catholic population in Asia.

parties

gain ground in European Parliament vote

Rome, June 11 (IANS) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's far-right party has strengthened its hand with a strong showing in the European Parliament elections which ended two days ago. However, Italy's main opposition party also gained ground.

Meloni's Brothers of Italy gained 28.8 per cent of votes, earning 24 of Italy's 76 seats in the legislative body. This represents a dramatic increase from the 6.4 per cent share of votes won by the party in the last European Parliament vote in 2019 and an increase from the 26 per cent it earned in the 2022 national election, Xinhua news agency reported.

However, like the Brothers of Italy, the country's centre-left Democratic Party, the main opposition party, also won a larger share of the vote, with 24.1 per cent and 20 seats. This represents a stronger showing than the 22.7 per cent of votes the party won in 2019.

"The main takeaway is that the big parties grew their share, separating themselves from the other parties," Vincenzo Emanuele, a political scientist and vice-director of the Italian Center for Electoral Studies at Rome's LUISS University, told Xinhua on Monday.

Although the vote results are for Italy's representatives in the European Parliament and do not directly impact the Italian Parliament or the makeup of Meloni's government, they are considered a gauge of support rates for the country's political factions.

said that Sunak congratulated Prime Minister Modi on securing a third term in the world's largest democratic election as both leaders discussed their mutual commitment to the security and prosperity of both countries and saluted the strength of the relationship. "The Prime Minister said he was pleased that India will send high level representatives to the Ukraine Peace Summit this weekend," said Sunak's office. The British premier had dialled PM Modi last week, congratulating him on his election victory and wishing him success for a third term. "The UK and India share the closest of friendships, and together that friendship will continue to thrive," Sunak posted on X after the phone call. During their conversation, the two leaders also reflected on the strength of the India-UK relationship and agreed that it will continue to grow in the future.

Meloni said after the vote that the results strengthen Italy's influence within the EU and internationally.

"We have the strongest government in the G7," Meloni said, referring to the G7 nations. Italy is at the helm of the G7 this year.

Meanwhile, the other European countries in the organisation, France and Germany, saw their ruling coalitions lose support in the European Parliament vote. In Italy, the losers in this vote were the country's second-tier parties.

Anti-migrant party The League won nine per cent of the vote, a large drop from 34.3 per cent in 2019. Five years ago, the party was the biggest winner; this time, it dropped to the fifth.

The anti-establishment Five-Star Movement, headed by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, earned 10 per cent of the vote, a decline from 17.1 per cent in the last European Parliament elections.

According to Emanuele, the low voter turnout featured this year's elections in Italy: just 49.7 per cent of those eligible to vote did. It is the first time that fewer than half of eligible voters have turned out in a European Parliament election. In 2019, the turnout was 54.5 per cent.

The results were front-page news across Italian media, with Le Repubblica calling the vote both "historic" and "predictable".

Italian state broadcaster RAI put the results in an EU context, saying "Europe is moving to the right".

With 76 of 720 seats, Italy will have the third-largest contingent in the European Parliament, behind Germany and France, both of which saw their tilt toward rightwing nationalist parties in the latest vote.

Afghanistan seeks to establish political, economic ties with all countries: Caretaker govt

Kabul, June 14 (IANS) The Afghan caretaker government's Supreme Leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, on Friday said that Afghanistan seeks to establish political and economic relations with all countries across the world.

"The Islamic Emirate seeks to establish political and economic relations with all countries within the framework of Sharia, particularly with Islamic countries, and has

fulfilled its obligations in this regard," Akhundzada said in a congratulatory message for the upcoming annual Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Akhundzada noted that Afghanistan has faced severe challenges due to floods, rainstorms and other disasters, which have resulted in significant losses and hardships for Afghans, reports Xinhua news agency.

He also condemned the Israeli attacks on Muslims in Gaza. "We call on other countries to fulfil their obligations effectively to prevent these heinous crimes and brutal atrocities," the message read. The country will celebrate Eid al-Adha on or around June 17, depending on moonsighting.

Reforms will continue strongly in India despite coalition constraints

The recent general elections in India have culminated in a coalition government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant shift after a decade of single-party majority rule. This transition has stirred apprehensions about the country’s economic trajectory, with some questioning whether the coalition nature might impede the progress made over the past years. However, there are compelling reasons to believe that the Modi government will continue to lead the country with the same strength and reformist zeal as it did with a bigger mandate.

Jagdeep S. Chhokar of the Association for Democratic Reforms has highlighted the differences in leadership styles between Modi and former Indian Prime Ministers Vajpayee and Singh, noting that Modi is less accommodating of differing opinions. This observation, while potentially highlighting challenges in coalition governance, also underscores Modi's decisive and assertive leadership style.

Modi's track record of pushing through significant reforms despite opposition suggests that his strategic vision and determination will not waver.

India's history with coalition governments since the economic reforms of 1991 has been marked by substantial growth and successful reforms. These governments have navigated complexities and delivered high growth rates, proving that coalition politics does not inherently hinder economic progress. With a projected growth rate of 6-7% for FY25, India’s broader economic trajectory remains promising despite global headwinds.

India's economic indicators further bolster confidence.

Total factor productivity (TFP) growth has been on an upward trajectory, and the country’s corporate and bank balance sheets are robust, providing a solid foundation for future growth and the corporate capital expenditure cycle. These strong economic fundamentals will support the Modi government in continuing its reform agenda.

The coalition partners in the current government have limited leverage to disrupt the administration. Major coalition partners, such as the TDP, JDU, and Shiv Sena, are primarily focused on their state-level agendas rather than broader ideological battles. This dynamic suggests that while coalition partners will seek benefits for their constituencies, they are

unlikely to significantly obstruct Modi’s overall governance strategy.

Despite the coalition constraints, significant changes in Modi's governance style are unlikely.

The strategic choices by Modi and Amit Shah will continue to drive the government’s policy direction. The focus on alleviating inequality, promoting inclusive growth, and broadening economic reforms will likely intensify. The government is expected to persist with investment-led economic strategies, while also introducing measures to stimulate demand and support social welfare.

Key reforms in manufacturing, ease of doing business, digitization, and skilling are set to continue. Although challenges in agriculture, land, labor reforms, and privatization may arise, the government’s commitment to reform is steadfast. The upcoming budget will be a litmus test, providing clarity on economic priorities and setting the stage for future growth.

India stands at a critical juncture, facing domestic and global challenges, including geopolitical shifts and the imperative of decarbonization. The government’s ability to maneuver these issues while maintaining economic stability will be crucial.

The additional fiscal space of Rs 1.2 trillion for FY25 and the adherence to fiscal deficit targets underscore a prudent economic management approach.

The Modi government, despite the coalition nature, is poised to continue its strong leadership and reformist agenda. The historical success of coalition governments in India, robust economic foundations, and strategic governance will ensure that the country remains on a path of growth and development.

The coalition dynamics may introduce new challenges, but they also offer opportunities for more inclusive and broadbased economic policies.

As India moves forward, the confidence in Modi’s leadership and the government’s reformist zeal remains unwavering. The coalition's united vision and Modi's leadership are poised to advance significant initiatives in governance, development, and social welfare, ensuring that India continues to progress towards a prosperous and resilient future.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections have confirmed the BJP's electoral strength and emphasized the crucial role of coalition politics in India's democracy. The NDA's victory promises a stable and progressive government that will effectively meet the aspirations of Indians and strengthen the nation's trajectory towards greatness.

Strengthening India’s defence and foreign policy

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent engagements at the G7 Summit in Italy have underscored India's unwavering commitment to bolstering its defence capabilities, driving the 'Make in India' initiative, and cementing its role as a pivotal player in global affairs. The strategic cooperation agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron marks a significant stride in India's journey towards selfreliance and robust foreign policy.

Intensifying strategic defence cooperation

India's relationship with France has emerged as a cornerstone of its defence strategy. The agreement between Modi and Macron to intensify strategic defence cooperation highlights a mutual recognition of the necessity for a strong bilateral partnership to ensure global stability. The focus on the 'Make in India' initiative is particularly noteworthy, reflecting India's resolve to achieve self-reliance in key defence sectors.

G7 Summit: Building diplomatic bridges

The G7 Summit provided a platform for PM Modi to engage with several world leaders, emphasizing India's proactive approach in international

diplomacy. Macron, being the first leader to meet Modi, signifies the special bond between India and France. Modi's meetings with British PM Rishi Sunak and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy further underscore India's strategic diplomacy aimed at fostering global peace and cooperation.

India-France strategic partnership

France stands as India's closest strategic partner in Europe, with the two nations having built a robust framework of cooperation, especially in the realms of security and defence. The ongoing negotiations for acquiring 26 Rafale jets for the Indian Navy, following the earlier procurement of 36 jets for the Air Force, reflect the deepening defence ties. These deals, worth billions, are not mere transactions but signify a longterm commitment to strategic partnership and mutual security.

Global and regional issues: A unified stance

The exchange of views between Modi and Macron on global and regional issues underscores the aligned visions of both countries for a stable and prosperous world order. Their discussions covered a wide array of topics, from defence and nuclear cooperation to space exploration and climate action. This holistic approach highlights the comprehensive nature of their partnership, aiming to address both immediate security concerns and long-term global challenges.

Roadmaps and future cooperation

The review of bilateral relations with a focus on the 'Horizon 2047' and Indo-Pacific roadmaps points to a forward-looking strategy. These roadmaps

envisage extensive cooperation in emerging technologies, digital infrastructure, education, and cultural initiatives. The agreement to expand cooperation in AI, critical technologies, energy, and sports further cements the multifaceted nature of the India-France partnership. Plans to work closely in upcoming global conferences demonstrate a commitment to collaborative solutions for global issues. Defence agreements: Building for the future

During Modi's visit to France last July, significant agreements were signed to deepen defence cooperation. These included the development of submarines, jet engines, and helicopter engines, emphasizing co-production and technological collaboration. The joint development of a combat aircraft engine and an engine for India's multi-role helicopter program reflects a shared vision for advanced defence capabilities and technological innovation.

Diplomacy and peace: A balanced approach

PM Modi's meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and his continued advocacy for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict underscore India's balanced approach in global diplomacy. Modi's emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy, as reiterated in his message to Russian President Putin, has garnered international praise. This approach aligns with India's broader foreign policy objectives of promoting peace and stability through constructive engagement.

Chinese premier’s Australia visit: Navigating with cautious optimism

As Chinese Premier Li Qiang embarks on his landmark visit to Australia, marking the first such visit since 2017, there is a palpable air of cautious optimism.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's warm reception of Li Qiang, and the series of highprofile engagements planned, underscore a critical juncture in Australia-China relations. This visit, spanning Adelaide, Canberra, and Western Australia, is poised to test the waters of diplomacy, economic cooperation, and strategic alignment between the two nations.

Economic and trade relations: A delicate balance

China remains Australia's largest trading partner, with significant stakes in resources and energy exports. The economic symbiosis is evident as Australia supplies a substantial portion of China’s iron ore, and China invests heavily in Australian mining projects. However, recent blocks

on Chinese investments in critical minerals, justified on national interest grounds, highlight the delicate balance Australia must maintain. Prime Minister Albanese’s pragmatic approach, assessing foreign investments on a case-by-case basis, seeks to foster growth while safeguarding national interests.

The easing of China's trade restrictions, imposed during the 2020 diplomatic dispute, signals a thawing of tensions. Yet, Albanese's agenda includes addressing remaining barriers on lobsters and seafood, crucial for Australia's agribusiness. This pragmatic focus on economic recovery, while navigating the geopolitical minefield, is a strategic necessity.

Diplomatic and security concerns

Premier Li’s visit is not merely an economic endeavor but a diplomatic tightrope walk. Albanese’s intent to raise the case of Australian writer Yang

Hengjun, facing a suspended death sentence in China, and recent defense incidents, including a Chinese military jet’s aggressive manoeuvre near an Australian helicopter, highlights ongoing security concerns. These issues demand a firm yet diplomatic stance, balancing human rights advocacy with strategic engagement. Public sentiment and bilateral relations

Public sentiment towards China remains skeptical. A recent poll by the Australia China Relations Institute reveals that 74% of Australians feel the country is overly reliant on China, while 71% perceive Beijing as a security threat. This mistrust is compounded by concerns over China’s global data monitoring practices, extending beyond TikTok to various other platforms and online games, as highlighted by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Despite these challenges, Albanese emphasizes the

The Third Eye: The new organisational imperatives

New Delhi: The frontiers of knowledge, data, and analytics opened by Information Technology and its latest offspring -- Artificial Intelligence (AI) -- have impacted all organisations big or small and altered the known practices of human resource development as well as corporate ethics.

Work from home, digitisation of content, and increasing reliance on ‘machine learning’ in decision-making have diminished the scope of interactiveness within the corporate body, discounted a leadership that drew sustenance only from claims of ‘long’ experience and created a tendency among the employees to work in silos which would only be at the cost of commitment to the common organisational ‘mission’. Skill development focusing on the handling of information and its meaningful dissemination has become a prime mandate for human resource utilisation and the call of leadership has become more demanding in terms of its ability to constitute teams that are both inclusive and productive, realise the new importance of ‘time’ as a resource and reset the framework of organisational ethics reconciling freedom of work with the goals of the composite body.

This is a situation where the cause of personal growth, autonomy of decision-making and belief in the known corporate objectives must all merge to serve the best interests of the individual and the organisation both. This looks simple but is not easy to achieve. A few points need to be closely examined.

The first relates to the philosophy of management itself. The one advocated in India is the ‘paternal nurtural’ style where the leader grooms the subordinate and feels happy with the growth of the latter.

The senior in turn commands the respect as an ‘elder’ and is happy to provide guidance wherever it is sought.

The senior has at least a minimal idea of how the junior is placed outside of the work area so

importance of showcasing Australia's values, the strengths of its people, and the robustness of its economy. This visit offers an opportunity to advance Australia’s interests through direct, stable dialogue, focusing on mutual benefits and realistic diplomatic engagement.

Educational and research collaborations

that an ‘empathetic’ approach was followed even when the evaluation of performance was being done according to ‘strict’ norms.

In the West the boss-subordinate relationship is confined to the place of work and could even be arid and marked by aloofness- in fact, the senior’s interest in the junior’s personal life beyond a point might even be resented by the latter.

At best the senior there could act somewhat like a ‘Coach’ which is regarded as a highly respectable function in the West.

The universal paradigms of leadership will however always be applicable to the role of a boss -- trustworthiness, practising what one preaches and total impartiality in giving credit for good work, will figure at the top of these.

A good leader prepares his successor for handling higher responsibilities and considers this as a legacy he would leave behind -- this should not change even where the sway of knowledge and data compelled an advanced degree of decentralisation of decision-making. Also, the fundamental accountability of the ‘guide’ will always be there -- the failure of a PhD programme, for instance, cannot be totally free of blame for the ‘Advisor’.

The second pertains to the adverse impact of technology on interactiveness within the organisation. All business is human activity and it is human to be in need of communication with colleagues at work and friends in the society at large.

In all organisations, there is a body of technology-savvy younger inductees and the core of ‘old hands’ who have grown with the organisation and even seen the transition to the Information Age, Knowledge Economy and Global competition. Their importance lies in their experience as a shrewd observer of how the ways of doing business were changing amidst things that they knew would always be constant such as the basic correlation between ‘productivity’ and ‘profitability’ and the fact that ‘brilliance’ would be empty without ‘diligence’.

It would not serve the best interests of the organisation if these two segments of the manpower resource worked in segregation -- one believing in ‘superiority’ based on ‘status’

The visit also delves into the educational realm, with discussions on Australia’s plan to cap international student numbers. Given that China is a significant source of international students, these talks are crucial.

The recent meeting between Australian university leaders and their Chinese counterparts underscores the economic and social benefits of educational ties.

A balanced approach, addressing

in the hierarchy and a ‘higher package’ and the other claiming to be the best in their field at present aspiring to be on the fast track of rise in the corporate body.

It is for the top leadership of the organisation to make for interactiveness between the two while constituting teams, defining the expectations from the team leaders, spreading the awareness of the organisational ‘mission’ everybody had to work for and revising if necessary the yardsticks of performance evaluation for the high and the low in which significant importance was attached to the ability of the senior to get the junior to produce more.

It is not uncommon to see a shallow-minded senior trying to impress his juniors by boasting about his expensive vacations and new acquisitions. A far-sighted leadership at the top should be able to detect such tendencies and discourage them by bringing them under the umbrella of organisational ethics.

A third organisational matter of concern arises from the advent of AI as the new instrument of growth for business and upgradation of delivery in vital spheres of life such as healthcare, education, finance, banking and even agriculture. This happens through the AI’s enabling strength of analysis of data at a pace that was humanly impossible to achieve.

‘Machine learning’ helped to create new IT products and services and Large Language Model (LLM) in particular came as a boon in diversifying business, enhancing ‘outreach’ and securing collaborations and partnerships.

AI has created a revolution in manpower management as corporates rush to up-skill their human resource, reorganise teams for specific delivery tasks and practice cost-effectiveness as a means of adding to profitability.

The top leadership of the organisation is itself in need of a reorientation to handle strategy formulation in light of the new frontiers revealed by the arrival of Artificial Intelligence as a tool of business management.

Data-driven customer-centric approach is the new mantra of success in business. An understanding of the promise and perils of AI is still far from

housing and rental stress while maintaining robust international education links, is essential.

A new chapter in bilateral relations

Premier Li’s visit symbolizes a potential new chapter in Australia-China relations. Both nations, recognizing the need for stable ties, are poised to explore common goals in climate change, energy transition, and

adequate in the rush of things created by this new facet of Information Technology.

AI is already proving the point that a technology howsoever useful for humanity is prone to exploitation by the malcontents, fraudsters and criminals for their own gain.

This is already happening and that is why world powers are deliberating on the prevention of misuse of AI and the creation of an international framework of controls on the development of AI. India is at the forefront of this initiative.

India with its large number of IT graduates and youth attuned to working online has the potential of answering the challenge of unemployment and producing startups.

Fourth, the mandate of the Age of Knowledge that being wellinformed was a prerequisite for success, has become more stringent because of an equally important counsel that whatever appeared on the Internet should not be regarded as the gospel truth. In fact, the advice is to always verify the information on a crucial matter through other means before accepting it.

In these days of misinformation and use of social media in ‘influence war’ nothing should be blindly acted upon without a recheck. Fake news is the order of the day and is used as an instrument of ‘proxy war’ among the nations as also in the freefor-all kind of business rivalry. This extends to deepfake and other forms of identity fraud committed through the misuse of AI for financial, social and even political objectives.

India like other countries has to gear up its crime control machinery at least at the central level to mitigate the threat of fake identities coming into play in all spheres.

Law and order and police are state subjects in the Indian scheme of things and hence what the Centre can and must do is organise training courses for senior state police officers most of whom belonged to the IPS, on the new dimensions of technology-based crimes so that a certain level of uniformity about crime control could be ensured through the length and breadth of the country.

A central institution like the Rashtriya Raksha University

technological innovation. The business roundtable in Western Australia, featuring leaders from both countries, highlights a shared commitment to economic cooperation and mutual growth. Manoeuvring with optimism

Premier Li Qiang's visit to Australia is a significant diplomatic event, marked by cautious optimism. The visit offers an opportunity to rebuild

which is controlled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, should also take the initiative for framing and conducting such programmes. All this underlines the importance of comprehensive knowledge for informed decisionmaking in all spheres of life. And lastly, organisations today need to know that their prospects were impacted by national and geopolitical developments both in terms of the opportunity for growth that the latter offered and the risk profile that they created for the former.

Scan of the external environment that prefaced all business planning has become far more tedious and the work of the Business Intelligence unit engaged by the corporates has accordingly acquired far greater importance than before because it goes much beyond the study of competitors and involves an understanding not only of the national policy framework but also the emerging ‘issues of war and peace’ visualised internationally. It may include predictions of any major disruptions of supply chains, breakdowns of collaborations and the advent of any new technology applicability which would boost competitive advantage.

For most organisations, cyber security is now a major concern and a cyber security administration has to be put in place by them as a legal requirement.

Finally, it can be said that internal cohesion, loyalty of the personnel and transparency of rewards for good work are inter-related matters and the leadership must consciously build the organisational ethos around them. With the evolution of the new system where ‘work from home’ is part of the organisational functioning in varying degrees, a robust model of supervision, interpersonal communications and feedback has to be worked out and this again is the call for those who were on top of the pyramid.

In a nutshell, the new age organisation is more demanding for the leadership than it is for the complying personnel, salespeople or internal researchers.

India to remain fastest-growing economy, to log 6.7 pc GDP growth in next 3 years: World Bank

New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) Driven by strong domestic demand, surge in investment and robust services activity, India will remain the fastest growing economy in the world, clocking a steady growth of 6.7 per cent for the next three fiscal years, the World Bank has said.

In the 'Global Economic Prospects' report, the World Bank retained its growth forecast for India at 6.6 per cent for FY25. It said that India will remain the fastest-growing of the world's largest economies, although its pace of expansion is expected to moderate.

"After a high growth rate in FY 2023/24, steady growth of 6.7 per cent per year, on average, is projected for the three fiscal years beginning in FY 2024/25," the global bank said.

For FY26 and FY27, the World Bank projected India’s economy to grow at 6.7 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively.

"Private consumption growth is expected to benefit from a recovery of agricultural production and declining inflation. Government consumption is projected to grow only slowly, in line with the government’s aim of reducing current expenditure relative to GDP," the WB report mentioned.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had earlier raised India's growth forecast for 202425 to 6.8 per cent from 6.5 per cent on the back of strong domestic demand and a rising working-age population.

The RBI last week raised India's GDP growth forecast from 7 per cent to 7.2 per cent for the current financial year (2024-25), as it expects the economy to continue on a high growth trajectory.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the GDP growth in the first quarter of 2024-25 is likely to be at 7.3 per cent, 7.2 per cent in Q2, 7.3 per cent in Q3, and 7.2 per cent in the last quarter.

The Indian economy has clocked a robust GDP growth of 7.8 per cent in the January-March quarter while for the full financial year 2023-24, the growth rate works out to a stellar 8.2 per cent -- up from 7 per cent in FY 2022-23.

The high growth rate has been driven by a strong performance of the manufacturing and mining sectors, according to the Ministry of Statistics.

India set to become global electronics mfg destination under PM Modi’s leadership: ICEA Chairman

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) India is poised to become a large-scale global electronics manufacturing destination in years to come under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), said on Sunday.

According to Mohindroo, the remarkable growth in mobile phone manufacturing which has reached 50 billion over the last

decade, has laid the foundation for a robust growth in overall electronics.

"We will now as a nation have to accelerate in all sectors, not only in mobile manufacturing but also in IT hardware, laptops, desktops, servers, consumer electronics, auto electronics and all other verticals of electronics for India to become a global manufacturing destination for electronics," Mohindroo told IANS.

In a recent report, ICEA mentioned that as India aims to reach $300 billion in electronics production by FY26, it will trigger demand for semiconductors worth $90-$100 billion, largely driven by domestic mobile

manufacturing.

Mohindroo further mentioned that the country needs a very passionate leadership as it has had in the last 10 years to catalyse "India towards a very large scale global electronic manufacturing destination, which is a quadruple growth of 400 per cent as we have had in the last 10 years".

As per ICEA data, the domestic market is expected to grow from $65 billion to $180 billion over the next 5 years, making electronics among India’s 2-3 top-ranking exports by 2026.

Of the $300 billion, exports are expected to increase from the projected $15 billion in 2021-22 to $120 billion by 2026.

the developmental journey of the nation, he noted.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, said that under PM Modi’s visionary leadership, “we shall see the unfolding of a golden chapter in India’s development journey.”

PM Modi on Monday took charge and signed his first file for the welfare of the farmers.

Seoul, June 10 (IANS) South Korea's exports to the United States exceeded those to China so far this year, data showed on Monday, raising the possibility that the US could be the top export destination for South Korea for the first time in 22 years.

Outbound shipments to the US amounted to $53.3 billion from January through May 2024, compared with South Korea's export value to China of $52.69 billion, according to data from Statistics Korea and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. If the current trend continues, the US will be the No. 1 export destination for South Korea for the first time since 2002, reports Yonhap news agency.

Last year, China was the largest export destination for South Korea with an export value of $124.81 billion, followed by the US with $115.71 billion. The gap was the smallest in 19 years.

Exports by South Korean large conglomerates to the US already surpassed those to China for the first time in 20 years in 2023.

South Korea's exports to the US have been on a constant increase in recent years. They advanced 5.4 per cent on-year to reach a record high last year on the back of growing exports of cars and rechargeable batteries.

But exports to China had fallen for two years in a row after hitting an all-time high of $162.91 billion in 2021 amid China's sagging manufacturing sector.

In a recent report, the Bank of Korea said that exports to the US are forecast to continue an upturn driven by solid consumption among US consumers and the expansion of South Korean entities' investment in the US.

But there have also been signs that the Chinese economy is recovering gradually, which could boost its demand for South Korean goods and services.

Celebrating cultural diversity in Australia: A special focus on Queensland

Australia, renowned for its vibrant multiculturalism, is a nation where diverse cultural expressions flourish. Art, music, and dance play pivotal roles in celebrating and preserving the multitude of cultures that inhabit the continent. This cultural richness is particularly evident in Queensland, where a tapestry of traditions and customs is interwoven into the fabric of daily life. These creative expressions not only celebrate cultural diversity but also foster social cohesion and mutual respect among communities.

Art as a reflection of cultural heritage

Art in Queensland vividly showcases its diverse cultural landscape. Indigenous Australian art, particularly from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, forms the cornerstone of the state’s artistic identity. This art, encompassing intricate dot paintings, carvings, and contemporary installations, narrates stories of the Dreamtime, spiritual beliefs, and deep connections to the land.

The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane frequently highlight both Indigenous and multicultural art. These exhibitions not only display traditional artworks but also feature contemporary pieces from artists of diverse backgrounds,

promoting an understanding and appreciation of various cultural narratives.

Queensland’s music scene is a testament to its multicultural fabric. Indigenous music, with instruments like the didgeridoo and clapsticks, forms a foundational element. Traditional songs and dances are integral to Indigenous ceremonies and festivals, preserving ancient knowledge and practices.

Immigrant communities have significantly influenced Queensland’s musical landscape.

Greek, Italian, and Indian communities, among others, have introduced their traditional instruments and melodies, enriching the local soundscape.

Events such as the Brisbane Multicultural Festival and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair celebrate this musical diversity, bringing together performers from various backgrounds to create a harmonious blend of sounds.

Queensland’s music festivals, such as the Woodford Folk Festival and the Brisbane Festival, often feature a wide array of musical genres from different cultures, fostering an environment of inclusivity and cross-cultural appreciation.

Traditional dances such as the Greek Zorba, Chinese lion dance, and Indian Bharatanatyam are regularly performed at cultural festivals and community events. These performances provide a glimpse into the rich traditions and histories of these communities, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

Dance companies like Bangarra Dance Theatre, which blend traditional Indigenous dance with contemporary choreography, play a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness. FIFA WC Qualifiers: India lose out on qualification dreams with controversial 1-2 loss against Qatar

Doha, June 12 (IANS) Indian football fans were again left seething in frustration as the side fell against Asian Champions Qatar despite taking the lead in the first half. The scoreline ended 2-1 in favour of the home side at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in a game surrounded by controversy.

In their first game without former skipper Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Sandhu started the game with the captain’s armband and came agonizingly close to leading the team to their first-ever trip to the third round of the FIFA WC Qualifiers. The loss also means that India will not receive automatic qualification to the AFC

Asian Cup 2027. Qatar started the game on the front foot and almost took the lead through a well-worked corner which was saved by the vigilant skipper in goal.

Mahtab Singh rescued the side in the opening minutes as Qatari forward Alrawi was in an excellent position to score but a brilliant block by the defender led to a goal-line clearance.

Despite a rocky start India grew into the game and came close to scoring on multiple occasions with Manvir Singh, Rahim Ali, and Lallianzuala Chhangte coming close to opening the scoring. The breakthrough came in the 37th minute through a brilliant pass by Brandon Fernandes who found Chhangte inside the box which the 27-year-old slotted into the back of the net.

Controversy broke out during the 75th minute as Yousef Aymen scored a goal despite the ball

having clearly rolled out of the pitch in the build-up. The Indian players and captain Sandhu all pleaded with the referee, but the absence of VAR led to the goal standing which meant the game remained tied. All hopes ended for India as the side lost all momentum and ended up conceding the second goal in the 85th minute through a brilliant finish by Alrawi from outside the box.

Kuwait won their fixture against Afghanistan (1-0), securing their progress to the next round. It was a brilliant turnaround by the side that started the day from the bottom of the table.

Munich, June 14 (IANS) Germany and Scotland take the field in the 2024 European Championship opener at the fabled home of German football, Allianz Arena. The month-long tournament is the first major football event to take place in the country since the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Hosts Germany will be hoping to get off to a good start to their

home campaign and hopefully turn their recent fortunes around.

Ever since the 2014 World up, the DFB have been struggling to progress past the group stages (2018 & 2022 FIFA WC) and falter early in the knockouts (Round of 16 2020 Euros).

"I look in our players' eyes and see the belief and will to win. I want us to believe in ourselves: we have great players, good togetherness, home advantage, we’ve had great training sessions and a good mentality. We have everything: we just have to show it tomorrow, and that’s why belief is very important," said Germany head coach, Julian Nagelsmann in the final pre-match conference.

Scotland on the other hand is looking to create history as the team has participated in 11 major tournaments in the country’s history but never made it out of the group stage.

Now drawn into Group A alongside Germany, Hungary and Switzerland, captain Andy Robertson and his men aim to create history.

"We don't want to have any regrets this time. We believe we are a team that can create history. The enormity of the opening game is a side show. Hopefully, on the night we can show the host nation we are a good side,” said the Liverpool wing-back in the pregame conference.

Germany vs Scotland match timing: The match will be played on June 15 at 12:30 AM (IST) Match venue: Germany vs Scotland will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany Broadcasting details: Germany vs Scotland will be broadcasted on Sony Sports Network.

T20 World Cup: Australia crush Namibia to seal Super 8 berth

North Sound (Antigua), June 12 (IANS) Australia qualified for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup after defeating Namibia by nine wickets here at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Wednesday (as per IST).

Australia produced a ruthless performance in all departments, chasing down Namibia's total of 72 inside six overs.

Spinner and Player of the Match

Adam Zampa picked up a slice of history with his match-winning spell of 4-12, becoming the first Australian men’s player to reach 100 T20I wickets milestone.

Overall, Zampa joined Megan Schutt and Ellyse Perry as the only compatriots to reach that mark in the short format at the international level.

Namibia's total against Australia is their lowest in men's T20Is. Their previous lowest was 96 all out against Sri Lanka in the 2021 T20 World Cup and against Netherlands during the T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2019.

Captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and decided to bowl first. Australia had a fantastic start, taking three wickets for just 17 runs in the first six overs, putting significant pressure on Namibia's top order.

Captain Gerhard Erasmus hit a

rare boundary, bringing Namibia to 5/31 at the 10-over mark. However, shortly after the drinks break, Zampa and Hazlewood combined for the sixth wicket, with Hazlewood taking a sharp catch for Zampa's second with the dismissal of David Wiese.

Ruben Trumpelmann attacked the spinner, hitting a 97-metre six over mid-wicket. However, on the next ball, he was caught by Glenn Maxwell in the same area, giving Zampa his third wicket. The legspinner then ended his spell in the same over, with wicket No.4, removing Bernard Scholtz. As wickets continued to fall, skipper Gerhard Erasmus' 36 off 43 balls gave Namibia something to defend. His side was all out for 72 in 17 overs when Marcus Stoinis removed Ben Shikongo.

Zampa (4), Hazlewood (2), Stoinis (2), Pat Cummins (1) and Nathan Ellis (1), who replaced Mitchell Starc for the match, were all wicket-takers for Australia.

Chasing a mere target of 73, Australia’s openers picked up the attack right from the outset. David Warner went 4-4-6-out in the second over, as David Weise had the last laugh in an eventful exchange.

But it didn’t impact Travis Head’s approach, who produced an impressive array of strokes on the way to an unbeaten 17-ball 34, laced with seven-boundary. Head was supported by Marsh (18 off 9 balls), as Australia completed the run chase inside the powerplay. This victory represents the

for the month of October 2024," the organisers said in a statement.

"We are thrilled to announce the commencement of Season 2 of the Indian Supercross Racing League," said Veer Patel, Cofounder & Director of Indian Supercross Racing League. "After the phenomenal success of our inaugural season, the anticipation for the upcoming season is palpable. Tarouba, June 15 (IANS) New Zealand dismantled Uganda for a mere 40 runs at the T20 World Cup, with Trent Boult and Tim Southee leading the charge. The Kiwi bowlers proved too formidable for the inexperienced Ugandan batters, resulting in a comprehensive nine-wicket victory in just 5.2 overs in the Group C match of the T20 World Cup at Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

From the onset, Trent Boult set the tone with his searing full inswingers. Even seasoned batters would have struggled against Boult's pinpoint accuracy. Ronak Patel, Uganda's opener, managed to get off strike on the second ball, but Boult's next deliveries wreaked havoc. Left-hander Simon Ssesazi was trapped plumb

in front by a deadly inswinger, followed by Robinson Obuya, who was bowled through the gate by another big-swinging delivery. With Boult conceding just one run in his opening over, Southee (3-4) maintained the pressure with a maiden, further stifling the Ugandan top order. Boult then delivered another maiden over, leaving Uganda reeling at 9 for 3 by the end of the powerplay. Southee also claimed a wicket, trapping Alpesh Ramjani LBW in his second over.

The relentless Kiwi attack continued with spinners Mitchell Santner (2-8) and Rachin Ravindra (2-9), alongside pacer Lockie Ferguson. Santner claimed the wicket of Ronak Patel, who edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Devon Conway.

Exercise during evening most beneficial for lowering blood sugar levels: Study

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) Finding it hard to lower your blood sugar levels? Doing exercises in the evening hours may help, according to a study on Monday.

The study published in the journal Obesity showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity in the evening for sedentary adults with overweight and obesity is most beneficial in lowering daily blood sugar levels.

“Our results highlight the importance of the field of precision exercise prescription,”

said Jonatan R. Ruiz, Professor of physical activity and health, at the Department of Physical and Sports Education, University of Granada in Spain.

“In clinical practice, certified sports and medical personnel should consider the optimal timing of the day to enhance the effectiveness of the exercise and physical activity programs they prescribe,” he added.

The team studied a total of 186 adults who exercised between 6 a.m. and noon, noon to 6 p.m., or 6 p.m. to midnight over 14 days. The participants had a body mass index of 32.9 kg/m2 with overweight or obesity with an average age of 46 years.

The results showed that accumulating greater than 50 per cent of moderate to vigorous

physical activity in the evening was associated with lowering day, night, and overall blood glucose levels compared with being inactive.

The association was found to be stronger in participants with impaired glucose regulation and was similar in both men and women.

A previous study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, and based on data from 30,000 people who were followed over almost 8 years also showed that exercise during the evening may offer more health benefits against obesity.

Aerobic moderate to vigorous physical activity between 6 pm and midnight reduced the risk of premature death and death from cardiovascular disease, the study showed.

Snoring or sleep apnoea? Know when

to seek medical attention

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS)

Snoring is a sleep disorder that can raise the risk of several noncommunicable diseases like high blood pressure, and blood sugar and even cause life-threatening heart attack and stroke, said experts on Monday.

Snoring is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder often associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). More than 12 crore people in India reportedly suffer from OSA.

“Snoring is characterised by the recurrent episode of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway leading to reduced or absent breathing during

sleep and these episodes are termed apnoeas and hypopneas,”

Dr. Manoj Pawar, Associate Consultant - Pulmonology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, told IANS.

While not all snoring is dangerous, Dr. Manoj said that it may be of concern if an individual suffers from excessive daytime sleepiness, or restless sleep due to it.

“The prominent symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness wherein patients tend to sleep very easily during daytime mostly while watching TV, sitting with the other members of the family, reading newspapers, and even while driving a car. It can be very dangerous,” the doctor said.

It can also cause early morning headaches, insomnia, trouble concentrating on things, mood changes, a decrease in sex drive, and an increase in urinary frequency.

This is why PM Modi called WHO chief ‘Tulsi Bhai’

New Delhi, June 7 (IANS) After the World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his re-election, the Prime Minister addressed him as “Tulsi Bhai”. At the ‘Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit’ in Gujarat in 2022, PM Modi called the WHO chief "Tulsi Bhai”.

During the summit, the WHO Director-General had requested PM Modi to pick a Gujarati name for him as he had "become a pucca Gujarati”.

“I will call him ‘Tulsi bhai’ as a Gujarati. Tulsi is a plant that modern generations are forgetting. Generations have worshipped Tulsi. You can also use the Tulsi plant in marriage. So now you are with us," the PM had said.

After PM Modi's re-election as Prime Minister, the WHO chief said in a post on X: “Congratulations Prime Minister @narendramodi on your reelection. I look forward to continuing @WHO-#India close collaboration for #HealthForAll”.

PM Modi responded: ”Thank you my friend Tulsi Bhai ! India's cooperation with WHO promotes our vision of ‘One Earth One Health'. The first WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India adds to our joint efforts towards #HealthForAll”.

PM Modi is likely to take oath as the Prime Minister for the third term on Sunday.

Organ exchange between unrelated individuals may enlarge donor pool in India: Experts

New Delhi, June 13 (IANS)

Opening up organ exchange between unrelated individuals may enlarge the donor pool, but policy concerns and risks remain, said experts on Thursday. Media reports on Thursday claimed that the Centre is in talks with NGOs and transplant surgeons about the prospects of opening up organ exchange between unrelated individuals.

severe, the oxygen supply to the various body organs is affected leading to apnoea (stoppage of breathing). Because of lack of oxygen, they suffer from a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms such as tiredness, daytime sleepiness, irritability, and lack of concentration,” Dr Santosh Bangar, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, told IANS

“It is a major cause of divorce and road traffic accidents, and can lead to mental and physical health complications hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, irregular heart rhythm, heart attack, sudden cardiac death, stroke (paralysis), dementia and depression,” he added.

Dr Santosh said it is also more common in men with a short neck, large tongue, and jaw abnormality.

Besides obese individuals, it can also be seen in thin people and can be hereditary.

The current laws majorly allow living donations from close relatives such as parents, siblings, children, spouses, grandparents, and grandchildren.

In the case of unrelated or altruistic organ donations, from distant relatives, in-laws, or longtime friends, additional scrutiny is done to rule out financial exchange.

"Allowing organ exchange between unrelated individuals could significantly expand the donor pool in India, saving countless lives.

“Medically, the primary concern is the risk of organ rejection, as genetic dissimilarity increases this risk. However, advancements in immunosuppressive therapies have made transplants between unrelated donors more feasible and successful,” Dr. Sudeep Singh Sachdev - Director and Senior Consultant Nephrology, at Narayana Hospital Gurugram, told IANS.

“This will enlarge the donor pool

and help patients waiting for transplants. At present India’s donation rates are very low compared to countries with good transplant numbers,” said Dr Bishnu Panigrahi, Group Head of Medical Strategy and Operations, at Fortis Healthcare.

However, the experts also stressed the need for strict regulatory controls.

“While the potential benefits include reduced wait times and better health outcomes for patients, the risks include higher chances of complications and the ethical dilemma of ensuring truly altruistic donations, free from coercion or financial incentives,” Dr. Sudeep told IANS.

He also called for “robust regulatory frameworks and comprehensive pre-transplant evaluations."

“We need strict regulatory controls where for such non-related transplants the authorisation committee should not be a hospital authorisation panel but an external committee where at least two must be government nominees, a lawyer of standing and a social worker. These four must be the quorum, physically present for authorisation approval,” Dr. Bishnu said.

However, not all experts believe in the need for altruistic organ donations in India.

Dr Arvinder Soin, Chairman and Chief Surgeon, at Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation, told IANS that although it may increase the donation rates modestly, it also opens up the possibilities of exploitation of the poor by the rich.

A blend of business and pleasure in Switzerland

Recently, I had the pleasure of travelling to Switzerland to attend the RISE Global Tamil Economic Future Summit in Davos. The summit was a fantastic opportunity to connect with Tamil entrepreneurs and professionals from around the world, offering a platform for invaluable collaborations and insights. As much as the summit was a professional highlight, my visit to Switzerland turned out to be an exquisite blend of business and cultural exploration.

Upon arriving in Zurich, I was immediately captivated by the city’s charm. Zurich is renowned for its rich history in finance and banking, and it didn't take long to see why. My first stop was the Museum of Watch, a

treasure trove that showcases the intricate craftsmanship and innovation behind Swiss timepieces. Walking through the exhibits, I was mesmerized by the evolution of watch making and the precision that defines Swiss watches. Each timepiece told a story of meticulous artistry and technological advancement.

Next on my itinerary was a tour of Zurich’s financial district.

As a global financial hub, Zurich's skyline is dotted with the headquarters of some of the world’s most influential banks and financial institutions.

Exploring this district offered deep insights into Switzerland’s economic prowess. The visit included a fascinating look at the Swiss banking system, renowned for its stability and privacy. The historical aspects of the financial

industry were equally intriguing, shedding light on how Zurich became the powerhouse it is today.

No trip to Switzerland would be complete without indulging in its world-famous chocolates. I headed to the Lindt Chocolate Factory, where the air is thick with the sweet aroma of cocoa.

The factory tour was a sensory delight, from watching the chocolate-making process to sampling freshly made treats.

The smooth, rich flavors of Lindt chocolates were an absolute highlight, offering a delicious blend of culture and gastronomy.

Each bite was a testament to the Swiss dedication to quality and perfection.

After my time in Zurich, I traveled to Davos for the summit. Nestled in the Swiss Alps, Davos is not

only a picturesque town but also a hub for global conferences.

The RISE Global Tamil Economic Future Summit was held at a state-of-the-art convention center, where the atmosphere was buzzing with energy and ideas. Meeting like-minded professionals and discussing future economic trends with them was both inspiring and enriching.

The scenic beauty of Davos added a serene backdrop to the intense brainstorming sessions, making the experience all the more memorable.

In between sessions, I took the opportunity to explore Davos.

The town is a blend of modernity and tradition, surrounded by stunning alpine landscapes. I even managed to squeeze in a short hike, which offered breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks

and lush valleys. The crisp mountain air and the tranquil environment provided a perfect contrast to the dynamic summit activities.

My trip to Switzerland was a perfect mix of business and pleasure. The professional engagements at the summit were complemented by the cultural and historical explorations in Zurich and the natural beauty of Davos. This visit not only enriched my professional network but also allowed me to immerse myself in the unique Swiss culture, from its financial acumen to its delectable chocolates. As I boarded my flight back home, I carried with me a wealth of knowledge, new connections, and unforgettable memories of a country that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation.

Chetan Bhagat opens up on foray into audio dramas - and how to ‘unlove’

Looking back at his childhood, Chetan Bhagat remembers the time when the radio was the primary source of entertainment. He recounts the sense of anticipation with which people awaited simple yet captivating audio dramas that held their listeners spellbound.

Modern audio dramas, according to the best-selling author, have undergone a remarkable transformation, benefiting from advances in music production technology and heightened creative efforts. He contends that productions today are exponentially richer in content compared to audio dramas of the past.

Bhagat, who recently launched an audio drama adaptation of his acclaimed book 'The Girl in Room 105' on Audible, told IANS that the forthcoming rendition of the novel isn't just a typical audiobook with a single narrator. Rather, it resembles a cinematic experience without visuals.

In a conversation with IANS, Bhagat explained the intricacies of producing the audio drama adaptation and the future of the audio drama business. Excerpts from the interview:

Q. What inspired the decision to adapt 'The Girl in Room 105' into an audio drama format?

Chetan: I try to always stay connected to the youth of India. I think the young are continually evolving. They have different ways in which they consume their stories. Human beings have always consumed and liked stories, but the medium has changed. I want to be in the most modern medium possible and audio dramas are the future.

Audio dramas have wonderful spaces where you can listen to them anytime and anywhere with a lot of flexibility. You can listen to them while folding your clothes or taking a walk and at the same time they give you almost a movie-like experience.

share their ideas with the world and this is an excellent way to do so.

Q. Can you walk us through the production process of the audio adaption of 'The Girl in Room 105'? What role does Chetan Bhagat play in it?

Chetan: The book itself has a small cameo if you can see by Chetan Bhagat, although it is a work of fiction. I often do this cameo situation where the hero of the story or the protagonist needs the author and the book is written to enable that to happen.

Exploring design opportunities in the digital age

I wanted to be in this space. I do not want to limit myself to being a writer, but to move on to movies, television, newspapers and motivational talks on stage. Audiobooks are another fascinating area that is coming up. I wanted to be the early ones doing this, so I grabbed the chance Audible gave me.

Q. How do you assess the effectiveness of conveying messages through reading versus listening?

Chetan: I always tell people to read and reading allows for a lot of absorption, but next to that, or almost the same as that, is listening to an audio format. Whether it is a podcast, audiobook or an audio drama because that also allows you to absorb content better.

Sometimes what happens with videos is that while you get absorbed in watching, it doesn't retain very well.

For example, you may have watched half an hour of Instagram reels today, but do you remember any of them? You probably don't! But you'll remember a good speech or good audio instructions; you'll also remember if you read something.

Reading as well as audio are two excellent ways to learn things and that’s how, if you have noticed, we are taught. We are taught to read books and listen to lectures. These are the two ways how maximum learning and absorption of information happens and it's a fantastic medium for that.

Q. What trends do you think are shaping the audiobook industry?

How are authors like you adapting to it?

Chetan: I realised quickly that I'm not in a paper business or the ink business, I am in the storytelling business. The more new ways and new technologies enable the telling of these stories, the more we need to try and become a part of them. I think this is a very important part for writers who

So I played myself, I did a little bit of that, but otherwise, there is a whole cast here. This is not just an audiobook that one person narrates. It is pretty much the same process as making a movie. The only difference is that there is no camera and make-up and all that because you're not seeing them.

But other than that there's a whole casting process, there’s scripting, shooting, editing, background sound, music, everything. There’s a full team and that is why the experience is going to be very wholesome or maybe unlike anything you may have experienced before.

Q. In what way does the audio drama explore stereotypes and political issues of contemporary India because that's something which is always a part of your stories?

Chetan: Although this book is a murder mystery, it is about somebody who is in IIT but not very happy with his career. He is teaching in coaching classes and he is trying to solve the mystery of the death of ex-girlfriend, with whom he is still in love.

So it brings out the frustration that people experience when they don't have anything meaningful in their job, nor see a purpose in it. For someone like Keshav, he finds the true purpose of solving this mystery, he believes that nothing absorbs him like trying to solve this case, even though he is not a detective.

The second thing is that it brings out the Kashmir issue, it brings out the stereotypes that exist in our heads and how that confuses the story. I do not want to reveal too much because we have a preconception about Kashmir and the girl is Kashmiri. The mystery hits a certain path, which is often realised as a stereotype. It is often called an unloved story.

We have so many love stories out there, but it is important to learn to unlove because love doesn't often last forever. People break up and sometimes don't even get words, and this is pretty much the case in contemporary India and the world. How does one learn to unlove somebody that's never discussed so I think this book also brings that out.

The convergence of design and technology has opened up a plethora of opportunities for students aspiring to pursue creative professions. From graphic design to industrial design, and beyond, the integration of technology has revolutionized traditional design practices, ushering in a new era of innovation and possibilities. Design has always been an integral part of human civilization, encompassing various disciplines such as architecture, fashion, product design, and visual communication. However, with the advent of digital technology, the boundaries of design have expanded rapidly. Today, designers are taking advantage of cutting-edge tools and software to conceptualize, visualize, and execute their ideas with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency.

The practice and creation of art and design in industry contexts have been deeply influenced by technology. Rihanna flaunts neck-pieces by Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra

Exploring the timeless allure of heritage Indian clothing

It was a moment to highlight for Indian designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra as singer-songwriter Rihanna wore neck-pieces designed by both of them at a fashion event for her brand Fenty Hair in Los Angeles.

However, a whiff of controversy filled the air as Manish concealed Sabyasachi’s design by cropping out his long necklace from the picture as he used only his choker necklace in the image, giving the impression that Rihanna exclusively wore his design. However, Sabyasachi’s brand used the entire picture of Rihanna showing both his and Manish’s designs. Many Netizens slammed Manish for unfairly hogging the entire credit.

The ‘Love The Way You Lie’ hitmaker donned an oversized zipper jacket, skirt, and camisole in the shade of ruby. She accessorised her look with a three-drop rubellite necklace from Sabyasachi and a choker necklace by Manish Malhotra.

Jennifer Aniston never imagined ‘Friends’ would be such a huge success

2 yrs!!!???”

In other Instagram Stories, she shared that she has been a voice-over artist for over 15 years and called it one of the "most rewarding" careers creatively and monetarily. Later, she also gave a glimpse of the ads that she has lent her voice to and admitted that she was confused when she stopped receiving work. She then spoke about a very good director friend without mentioning the name and shared that she directly spoke to him and asked him about the matter.

Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston, who found international fame as Rachel Green in ‘Friends’, said that she "never thought" the sitcom would become such a huge success and still be popular 30 years on from its debut.

Speaking during an interview at Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, Aniston said: "The fact that it’s had this long, wonderful life and it still means a lot to people is one of the greatest gifts I think all five of us -- all six of us -- we never could imagine.

Aniston starred alongside names such as Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry, who passed away in October 2023 at the age of 54, in the show.

"And we see each other. I talked on FaceTime with Court(eney Cox) last night for an hour, and Lisa and the boys, and we just have a really -- it’s a family forever." ‘Friends’ ran for 10 seasons from 1994 until 2004, and Aniston reminisced about that on the day the first episode premiered, she and Perry went to play a prank on Kudrow, who was getting her hair coloured in a nearby salon, reports femalefirst. co.uk.

She said: "Matthew Perry and I were having lunch somewhere, and we knew Lisa (Kudrow) was getting her hair coloured. "So we ran into the hair salon, and I snuck up -- she was in the sink -- and I took the nozzle from the guy that was supposed to be doing it and just started washing her hair. It definitely flew out of control, and that was unfortunate. But the excitement we had, it feels like yesterday."
