TECHNOLOGY NEWS CARLO SALVI

Carlo Salvi headers: Technical solutions, high-quality materials, and attention to detail Carlo Salvi SpA is a world-renowned designer and producer of machines for the heading of screws, semi-tubular and fully tubular rivets, bolts, special fasteners and parts with very complex shapes starting from drawn wire in coils. Machines can be divided in three main families, namely: - single die double blow headers; - 2-die 4-blow headers; - progressive precision transfer headers. The machines of the 2-die 4-blow series are able to handle wire diameters from 1,2 to 12 mm. They are particularly suitable for components whose heads have a very large volume or components where two dies are sufficient but at least three blows are needed, such as for instance allen screws, trimmed components etc. A great advantage of these machines is due to the fact that the third blow can very often be used as an introduction punch if parts with large heads and a

very short shank have to be transferred. Carlo Salvi has developed a new motorized model which is called 248 E, which is an enhanced version of the model 248 machine. The machine is complete with an electro-pneumatic clutch which allows maximum heading tonnage to be applied even when jogging. The machine has been specially developed in order to minimize changeover times. Its technology and speed is such that it enables to run profitably not only large volumes but also small batches. An example of set up and changeover times follows: - k.o. length adjustment first die 30 seconds - k.o. length adjustment second die 30 seconds - cutoff length adjustment 30 seconds - adjustment of opening and closing cams 5 minutes - assembly of dies 5 minutes - assembly of punch block unit 5 minutes - assembly of cutter unit 1 minute - assembly of transfer fingers 1 minute

The header model 248 E can be enriched further with some optional items as, for examples, the quick change kit, which includes: punch block unit, transfer unit, cutter holder unit, cutter centring jig, punch centring jig, transfer centring jig. To handle of material like titanium and super alloys, which can not be formed with the cold heading system, the header can be equipped with a pre-heating system. The customer can decide to install on the header model 248 E the heating system with coil housed on the die holder, or the resin-bonded inductor positioned into the bedframe. In the event of special production needs, it is possible to evaluate also to install both kind of inductors.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

PCTFE – Interesting material in LNG field I am quite sure that everybody heard about PTFE in the Oil and Gas market and in particular in LNG business. It is often presented as the perfect solution for the so-called cryogenic applications (that start on a maximum temperature of – 150°C). But did you ever heard about its old cousin called PCTFE (or PTFCE) ? Let’s compare a little both materials to understand what we are talking about: These are both called fluorinated materials. In other words, fluorine atoms surround carbon atoms and gives them their particular chemical resistance (since fluorine is inert). These materials are broken down into what is called fully fluorinated and partially fluorinated. The full ones have all carbon atoms surrounded by fluorine and the partial ones have some

TECHNOLOGY NEWS ARTICLE

besides fluorine. PTFE is the fully fluorinated material despite PCTFE is a partially one. Due to this fully fluoration PTFE is a magic combination of properties that can solve in one shot many issues in our critical industry. It resists to most of the chemical agents and so is the perfect solution to corrosion, it has the lowest coefficient of friction and so allows a self lubrification, it offers one of bigger thermal amplitude of use (permanent between -150°C and + 250°C) due to its high fusion temperature, its hydrophobic properties makes it the perfect solution for sealing … But we should be aware also about its few limitations. As specified hereabove the PTFE could be used for permanent usage of a minimum of -150°C that it is the upper temperature for the scope of the present article: LNG and so cryogenic field. Its mechanical properties are low as the tensile strength is maximum 40 Mpa for the best and modified grades (so called TFM). PCTFE is offering differents advantges for low temperature. It is is stronger and stiffer. Though PCTFE has excellent chemical resistance, it is still less than that of PTFE but still offer a wide range of compatibility relative to fluorinated materials. PCTFE has lower viscosity, higher tensile strength and creep resistance than PTFE that allows to create ball valve seats with less deformatin under load and risk of leakage under pressure. As PTFE is a perfect material as a moisture barrier and so perfectly usable for high purity applications. PCTFE is a tough, durable fluoroplastic that exhibits unique physical and mechanical properties: • Stress-crack resistance • High mechanical strength and low shrinkage rate at low temperatures providing excellent stability for valve seats. • Excellent stability at low temperatures • Good machining properties • Excellent chemical resistance to all inorganic corrosive liquids • Practically zero moisture absorption • Excellent electrical properties maintained in high humidity conditions • Maximum temperature for continuous use: 248 F (120 C) These characteristics are maintained over a working range of -400 deg. F to +248 deg. F (-240 deg. C to +120 deg. C). General range Properties: • Compressive Strength (D-695): 5000-5500 psi • Tensile Strength (D-638): 4800-5300 psi • Elongation: 100 - 200% • Flexural Strength (D-790): 9000 - 10,000 psi • Hardness, Shore D: D90

The Advantages of Chemical Injection and Chemical Injection Systems Dosing and Injection generally applies to feeding chemicals or additives in variable quantities into a process and service fluids at a required pressure. The Chemical Injection can be either continuously or at intervals, to give sufficient time for the chemicals to react and show the results. The word dosing is very commonly used by industrial engineers in: A) Oil & Gas (Upstream and Downstream) B) In water treatment, in thermal power stations, in any industry where steam is being generated. In the Oil & Gas sector the chemical injection could be used: a) to increase oil production b) to guarantee production flow assurance requirements and optimize processes c) to protect a) Increase the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field by chemical injection is one of the three primary techniques for EOR (Enhanced oil recovery) according to the US Department of En-

TECHNOLOGY NEWS BE.T.A

Big improvments with gas diluters based on equal capillaries Gas dividers or diluters are widely used for calibrating and testing linearity of gas analyzers and gas chromatographs. Mainly two categories of such devices are available on the market : - Analogic type, using Mass Flow Controllers - Digital type, using capillaries or sonic nozzles The first type offers high flexibility, covering continuously a specified dilution range but MFCs don›t like mechanical shocks and vibrations that causes misalignments and sometime failures, then are not suitable for frequent travels required to operate in the industrial environments. The second type was traditionally less flexible because in the past just discrete dilution steps was available, whose distance was depending on the number of installed capillaries or nozzles (generally few steps in case of capillaries and more in case of sonic nozzles). An Italian small company, Be.T.A. Strumentazione Srl, did decide to fill the existing gap between those two techniques joining the MFCs flexibility with the capillaries stability and availability : the key point was applying an electronic PID pressures control system in a way to control the pressures across the capillaries. In fact an accurate pressure control is mandatory to assure that equal flows do cross each «equal» capillary. In addition, the electronic control allows easily managing the pressures set points. Processing the formula (Hagen-Poiseauille) that

32

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

describe how much flow is induced in a tube by applying it a known differential pressure, it›s evident that a dilution step, given by setting a ratio between the number of capillaries fed by the span gas and the remaining capillaries fed by diluting gas, may be moved up and down by unbalancing the ratio between the applied pressures. In this way, the gap between the discrete dilution steps is easily covered applying relatively small pressure differences. Calculations used to set the operating points of pressures control are also including the mixtures viscosity effects compensation and the correction of «certified errors» measured by an accredited laboratory and recorded into the diluter memory. In fact the Hagen Poiseauille law indicate a linear ratio between the induced flow and applied pressure and that›s not completely true for real gases, but covering the relatively small gap between one dilution step and the next the non-linearity have not measurable effects. This function had been applied to both products of the BetaCAP30 family adding to the «step by step» operating mode (selecting the dilution ratio) a second mode with continuous ranges (setting the output diluted concentration) as follows : BetaCAP30 (with 30 equal capillaries) from %1.66 up to %98.33 (zero and span are also available) BetaCAP30X100 (with 30 + 100 equal capillaries) from %0,0166 up to %98.33 (+ zero and span) BetaCAP30 is specialized for emissions field and BetaCAP30X100 covers both the emissions and the air quality ranges also using high concentration test gas bottles. Another advantage is notable with «equal capillaries» and not common to any other dilution technique : The high natural accuracy. This may be understood considering that all the techniques do require some flow measurement to qualify the components before the installation (sonic nozzles and capillaries case)

BE.T.A TECHNOLOGY NEWS or to define the polinomial to correct the non linear response (MFCs case) : to do that, a flow meter must be selected in a way that the maximum flow to be measured is included in the measuring range, but what it happens when the same flow meter must measure the much smaller flow values, used for the higher dilution ratios ? That›s why MFCs producers don›t encourage using this device at less than %10 of his range... but how is the relative accuracy at

%15 or %20 or even %50 ? Proportionally lower and this reflects on the diluter «relative accuracy». Let›s now consider the «equal capillaries» technique : manufacturing process produces similar capillaries, but not enough similar to be used as they are : each production lot must be classified (by measuring the flow at a given applied pressure) and a nearly equal capillaries set required to produce each diluter must be extracted repeating the flow measuring on a pre-

selected class. In this case, the main advantage is that all the measurements do repeat very similar values for each measurement, that may moved (applying a suitable pressure) near to the end of scale of the flow meter; when the measured value is not similar, the involved capillary is discarded. Selecting equal capillaries groups from a big capillaries number leads to relative accuracies very near to the end of range repeatability of the used flow meter. The term repeatability is not casual : for the dilution accuracy the measured flow value in one capillary is not important itself, but just compared with the flow of all the other involved capillaries. In fact the dilution ratio don›t change multiplying all the flows by a constant . A different situation occurs when the produced diluter is sent to certification : at this point capillaries are not more accessible one by one, because they are grouped to reduce the solenoid valves number and the certifying laboratory may just measure the flow through each group, obliged to measure big and small values with an high range flow meter, as required with all types of diluters.

ergy. The injection of various chemicals, usually as dilute solutions, has been used to help the mobility and the reduction in surface tension. Injection of alkaline or caustic solutions into reservoirs with oil that has organic acids naturally in itself will result in the production of soap that may lower the interfacial tension enough to increase production. Injection of a dilute solution of a water-soluble polymer to increase the viscosity of the injected water can increase the amount of oil recovered in some formations. Dilute solutions of surfactants such as petroleum sulfonates or biosurfactants such as rhamnolipids may be injected to lower the interfacial or capillary pressure that impedes oil droplets from moving through a reservoir. Special formulations of oil, water and surfactant, micro emulsions, can be particularly effective in this. Application of these methods is usually limited by the cost of the chemicals and their adsorption and loss onto the rock of the oil containing formation. In all of these methods the chemicals are injected into several wells and the production occurs in other nearby wells. Enhanced oil recovery wells typically pump large quantities of produced water to the surface. This water contains brine and may also contains toxic heavy metals, and other negatives properties. Usually adding chemicals to treat this water, prior to discharge it or re-inject it into a reservoir, could be very important. A wide range of chemical treatments can be considered including biocides, antifoam agents, deoilers, demulsifiers, nitrate inhibitors, and (sodium) hypochlorites. b) Chemical injection can also be implemented in the production facilities in order to guarantee that flow assurance requirements are met in pipeline and process equipment and to optimize processes. To achieve the features, it is important to know the variety of fluids, their composition and physical properties (variable items) and select the appropriate “chemical injection program”. The chemicals used for treatment

A bit of science behind your biggest pain point The thing that our global economy invests $2.2 trillion per annum into. The issue that can be avoided. The issue that when avoided, prevents unnecessary wastage of resources. Corrosion. Despite the current economic situation that faces many companies today, there is a way to overcome these challenges; Corrosion Control. Instead of achieving project construction in the cheapest, quickest way, consider the following: if you need to delay project completion at a later date due to parts, equipment or spares that are corroding, what is the gain in getting the ‘cheapest deal’ in the first instance? Long term protection for critical spares and equipment is becoming increasingly critical. Through proactively preventing corrosion damage, companies can preserve what they currently own without wasting valuable funds on replacing damaged or corroded assets.

Figure 1: Flange showing where Seal’n’Peel has and hasn’t been appied

by spending a few minutes applying Seal’n’Peel to metal components, EPCs save up to 83% of time that would be spent removing rust that would otherwise occur. This can be seen in Figures 2 and 3.

Projects around the world are now specifying a new coating, Omni-tuff Seal’n’Peel. Seal’n’Peel is a peelable coating that prevents corrosion on metal components during storage or transportation. The coating works on a preventative technology, which saves monetary resources and time compared to traditional technologies.

Seal’n’Peel has been specified or applied at projects in varying climates with successful outcomes. Senior field engineer comments are also positive: “…I saw firsthand the benefits of Seal’n’Peel during the past couple of years whilst at the fabrication yard in Malaysia.” - Global Oil Producer

According to our studies, if metal components are protected adequately from corrosion and rust creep, companies can save up to 95% of costs that would have to be otherwise invested in the cost of re-working rusted components. Additionally,

“We’re using Omni-tuff Seal’n’Peel and the performance is perfect. Seal’n’Peel is protecting the flange face very well and it’s very easy to use.” – Global EPC

SEALCORE TECHNOLOGY NEWS

A cooperation strategy based on investments in Sealing Solutions and Custom-made Articles SEALCORE Network, A cooperation strategy based on investments in production and innovation in order to connect and introduce more vigorously on the worldwide market seven Italian Companies specialised in Sealing Solutions and Custom-made Articles. This is the philosophy, that led to the creation of the SEALCORE Network. A group of Italian Companies specialised in Sealing Solutions and Custom-made Articles gathered together with the joint vision to offer a complete range of products and services for every application sector: Pulp&Paper - Wind Mills - Mining and earth moving equipment - Primary Metals Naval & Marine - Aerospace – Food - Automotive - Automation - Chemicals - Petrochemical Pharmaceutical - Hydraulic, Heating & Sanitary Systems - Dynamic Sealing, Heavy Duty and General Industry. SEALCORE Network puts itself to the forefront of global markets, strengthened by the knowhow of its seven members OringOne, Duci, Duepi, Fluorten, FP F.lli Paris, ATS Special Oil Seals and Slib Italy. The cooperation started from the initiative of Mr. Usvaldo Paris, President of F.lli Paris Srl, who implemented a peculiar strategy of investments to take over the shares of some promising Companies, focusing them on development in order to renew and extend their potentiality. The idea behind the SEALCORE Network is to operate as a Network of Companies pursuing strategical marketing activities for the benefit of its members, and for the opening of offices and warehouses worldwide to ensure quick local service and assistance on the main international markets. The idea at the base of the SEALCORE Network came from Mr. Usvaldo Paris, President of F.lli Paris Srl, between 2008 and 2009, but it was actually realised some years later. In January 2014, hiring Mr. Gianstefano Foresti, the foundations for the Network were laid, as the task of Mr. Foresti

was to bring together all the family owners of the member Companies, which will have to create the SEALCORE Network. The idea was to share a strategy according to which the marketing actions should address the market with a single name, increasing the exposure of the Companies of the Network, but ensuring and keeping at the same time their independence and individuality in the management of their own business. This genuine idea became soon a very forward-looking strategy, and was immediately accepted as business philosophy by all the families, that today form the SEALCORE Network; not only the Paris family, but also Duci, Marchesi, Fumagalli, Plebani, Libretti and Nembrini. SEALCORE Network is not just “do business”, but “be business”; and because of its familiar spirit, SEALCORE Network means “to be business together” and together become a new landmark in the global market. In 2015, the seven Companies of the SEALCORE Network had an overall turnover of about 112 million Euros, employing 582 employees, and with %68 of the products addressed to International markets. The goal for the year 2016 is a growth of %8.7 on the year before, but the great aim of the SEALCORE Network is to make a substantial growth between 2016 and 2019: increasing sales to 140 million. At the present, the investments made between 2013 and 2015 amount to 31.4 million Euros, and they include properties, staff, equipment, labs and partnerships. About 11.5 million were invested only in 2015 and other 13,5 million are planned for 2016. Different investments for each Company. For example, in Duci Srl the aim is to engineer the O-Ring’s production in order to compete with Chinese and Asian manufacturers by reducing production time and by offering a highgrade quality. Only in this way it is possible to produce something like an O-Ring, a very common product, offering a great price-quality ratio. INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

47

TECHNOLOGY NEWS SEALCORE Moreover, a new state-of-the-art production site with a centralised store is under construction in Chiuduno (Bergamo area) in order to have always available on stock up to two billions of O-Rings, out of a total amount of four billions of O-Rings produced per year. On the other hand, investments for FP F.lli Paris Srl and ATS Srl are dedicated to an intensive development of special products especially designed for heavy duty applications, where these two Companies and their products are already well known. From Wind Mills to Steel Mills and Pul&Paper machines, as much as many other heavy duty fields. In this case, investments are made to create production methods and products, that are extremely peculiar for the worldwide market, and for which the good performance combined with a competitive price is essential. More than 5 million Euros were invested in the past 10 years to create a full range of size for a Special BBS Big Bearing Seal, for which ATS Srl is the sole independent producer in the World, competing with globalized industrial competitors. In the Wind Mill business, FP and ATS are involved in projects for new machines generating up to 8 MW power. Highly qualified staff is also among the investment. In Fluorten Srl, it has been decided to focus on high performance Oil&Gas valves for both cryogenics and high-temperature applications: an essential contribution to the development of these products, came from the hiring of a specialised technician with several years of experience in the field, who invented this type of seals. Another engineer has been employed to bring strong competences in terms of designing the seal’s production methods, for the most complicated applications. All the Companies in the SEALCORE Network share the firm intention to continue producing in Italy, especially in Bergamo and Brescia areas, except for the second branch of Duci, opened in Sardinia 15 years ago, being today one of the largest and most modern Company in the region. The “green” perspective is very important for the Companies in the SEALCORE Network especially because the sector in which the Network operates, namely rubber and plastic materials, isn’t green at all, even though Fluorten Srl as well as Duci Srl are certified ISO 14001 for the Environment. As a consequence, all the Companies in the SEALCORE Network pay

48

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

serious attention not only to create a calm and flexible working environment for their employees but also to everything, that can minimise as much as possible the environmental impact of their business by avoiding waste, limiting fumes and using high-efficiency filters during production as well as by recovering water, and energy using solar panels. And this is not because today being green is fashionable, but because doing this well, it’s synonym of great savings and profitability. Today, the Companies in the SEALCORE Network operate in all industrial sectors, from the most common to the most “difficult” like aerospace where Fluorten Srl is certified EN 9100 for supplies in the field of space and defence. The Companies in the SEALCORE Network also provide specific products in the food, medical and pharmaceutical Industry where Duepi Srl, for example, takes the lead in the production of moulds and articles in liquid silicon. But the Network is also present in the heavy industry, from steel mills to shipbuilding, from mining to hydraulics, as well as in the Oil&Gas for general and high-temperature applications as well as cryogenics, and automotive. The range of products is really wide, and above all it supplies the market with those special products, for which having a press is not enough, but vision and specific know-how are necessary too. TECHNOLOGY NEWS DRÄGER

Wireless communication in safety systems Wireless sensors have now been around for some time. The motivating factors for installing wireless equipment are easy to identify; simplicity of installation and flexibility in operation. Just as the benefits are easy to see, so are the potential challenges. The main challenges with safe wireless communication are to guarantee a short response time and to immediately detect loss of contact with sensors. Thus the primary difficulty in designing a wireless safety system is having a guaranteed short latency while not depleting the batteries. In addition, full control of all network message traffic is required, and loss of contact with a device must be identified immediately.

power efficiency and full control of network traffic. The detector itself is also developed according to IEC 61508 Ed2 and meets the performance requirements of IECIEC 60079-29-1.

Wireless gas detection GasSecure has developed an optical gas detector, the GS01, that operates with significantly lower power consumption than today’s state of the art detector units. This allows for wireless operation with battery life up to two years. In addition, GS01 will not need recalibration and performs equally or better of the art detectors.

A safety controller will send a packet equipped with the four above mechanisms. The safety device needs to respond to that packet within the process safety time. If the device does not respond before the safety time elapses, the device is marked as unavailable in the control system. Several options exist for implementing the four required safety features. One approach, chosen by GasSecure, is to base the product on a certified implementation of an open safety protocol. GasSecure has chosen PROFIsafe over PROFINET, due to the widespread use of the latter in process control applications.

The detector is intended for monitoring applications as well as for safety applications. For safety applications, the communication with the controller needs to meet reliability requirements according to SIL2 (Safety Integrity Level) guidelines as described in IEC 61508 Ed2.0. GasSecure’s patent pending wireless communication system meets the requirements of fast response time,

50

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Fulfilling the SIL2 requirements with SafeWireless™ For safe communication at SIL2, four errorhandling mechanisms must be supported: sequence numbering, timeout in the absence of response, device code name, and data consistency checking. The purpose of these mechanisms is to detect failures of the safety device in terms of packet loss, unacceptable network delay, bit errors, replay attacks, etc.

The gateway has PROFINET implemented in order to communicate with the controller. It does not need PROFIsafe as this is relevant only to the controller and the device. Setup of gateway and detectors The process safety time for hydrocarbon gas detection as defined by IEC60079-29-1 is 60 seconds. In order for the device to be defined as safe by the control system it needs to respond to safe request packets within this time. Given that

DRÄGER TECHNOLOGY NEWS wireless packets may get lost in transmission, it is prudent to make several attempts at transmitting the packet within the process safety time. There is an obvious trade-off here. Frequent downlink transmissions will deplete batteries quickly but have a high probability of getting the message through, while rare transmissions save the batteries and reduce the success probability and thus the availability of the device. A reasonable balance between energy consumption and probability of success is to have three to four attempts within the process safety time, i.e. one downlink transmission every 15 to 20 seconds. GasSecure estimates that the battery will last for up to two years of continuous operation under normal conditions. For non-safety applications, the GS01 may be used in other ISA100.11a networks in parallel with devices from other vendors. Wireless network topology

The ISA100 Wireless standard distinguishes between field devices, for example sensors, valves, or actuators, and infrastructure devices i.e. devices that handle communication to other network devices and the backbone network. For both device groups a number of roles are defined. For field

devices, the two most important roles are (A) Input / Output and (B) Router. The simplest network topology is the ‘star’. In the star topology, an access point communicates directly with each wireless field device. This topology will minimize the latency, because each device is directly linked to an access point. With multiple access points, secondary (backup) links can be established cf. Figure 1. The ‘mesh’ topology (cf. Figure 2), in which additional wireless nodes are installed to act as relays, offers a more advanced set-up. The nodes may also have sensing capability and they may, or may not, be battery powered. Wireless mesh topology is used to extend coverage by means of intermediate links and may enhance communication reliability by providing redundant paths between devices. If the primary path of a field device is obstructed or becomes unavailable, the system manager can choose to transmit the data along the secondary path. This leads to very stable and predictable network availability. SUMMARY The truly wireless GS01 gas detector is specifically designed for safety and monitoring applications. It fully supports the ISA100 Wireless™ standard for safe wireless operation of field instrumentation and is therefore very easy to deploy in an ISA100 environment with compliant gateways and other ISA100 field devices. GasSecure’s patented SafeWireless™ communication concept enables easy integration of the GS01 into safety instrumented systems (SIS) according to the IEC 61508 standard. SafeWireless™ meets the requirements of fast response time, power efficiency and full control of network traffic. Moreover, redundant operation is possible for the entire safety system including the detector, gateway, and safety controller. Overall, the GasSecure GS01 provides wireless gas detection with seamless integration into safety instrumented systems.

“Since the beginning of our activity, our core business has been Oil Storage Tank Cleaning. In the first stage, we used to perform tank cleaning by using the traditional method, that implies the presence of workers inside the tank, with the all risks deriving from that. About ten years ago we have realized that manual tank cleaning was too risky for workers, and the risk of major accidents is not tolerated in modern standards anymore. Therefore we have looked outward and analyzed the most modern methods existing in the world. The method that most stroke our attention or, better, inspired us, was found in Japan, and was called C.O.W. , that is Crude Oil Washing. After a short negotiation, we have purchased it and once in Italy we have tailored it to our needs: our engineers have improved and refined it with dozens of enhancements and upgrades, all successful, creating the best possible automatized system. We gave it the name S.R.S. ( Sludge Recovery System ), focusing on the recovery of a significant part of hydrocarbon contained in the sludge. This technology was immediately welcomed by all the great names of Oil Storage and Refining field, ENI first, and now that in Italy it is almost mandatory to work with no-man entry methods, the S.R.S. is the most required by Clients. As can be easily imagined, all our competitors got themselves with similar methods, but nobody has succeeded until today to manufacture such an efficient and cost-effective machinery. By using this technology we aim, first of all, to operate in complete safety, with a particular attention to environment and energy-saving: a logical consequence of recovering ninety / ninetyfive percent of the hydrocarbon, when in the past we were compelled to dispose 100% of sludge contained into a tank. programs can consist of a single compound or of a blend of different chemicals. These compounds are typically hazardous to the health (inhalation and/or skin contact) and are not suitable for discharge into the environment. The most typical flow assurance chemicals used include wax inhibitors, pour-point depressants, asphaltene inhibitors, and scale inhibitors. c) The fluids typically treated in the Oil & Gas sector include natural gas, natural gas liquids (condensates), oil, produced water (brine) or a combination of these fluids (oil, water & gas). These fluids contain a variable percentage of substances chemically aggressive (sulfur compounds) that can affect and damage a big range of materials. For these reasons there are a wide range of additives that can be used to protect and prolong the lifetime of pipelines and process, such as corrosion inhibitors, biocides, demulsifiers, and foam inhibitors. There are two main processes of industrial water treatment: boiler water treatment and cooling water treatment. In this sector, the chemical injection could be used:

BOSCAROL VALVES, PIPES, TANKS

Boscarol:always keeping a watchful eye on the quality of its products Economizers and reducers - Cryogenics valves - Pressure gauge valves In 1954 Leopoldo Boscarol set up the Milanese company that still today bears his name, immediately making his mark in the sector for the quality of the first products that came off the production line: pressure gauge valves for highpressures. In the early seventies following an intense design phase Boscarol started the manufacture of cryogenic valves for cold systems, once again meeting with great success and recognition. Today, Boscarol is a modern and dynamic company able to rationally plan its work and proud to have maintained the sense of an artisanal approach, in other words, respecting its tradition of processing and production precision. At the same time Boscarol has modernized by embracing new technologies and professionalism. The family-run company by now having reached the third generation is still in constant growth, always keeping a watchful eye on the quality of its products. In recent years the company has won yet another challenge with the manufacture of even more sophisticated instruments, namely reducers and economizers, thereby carving out a position of sector leader for itself. Since 2000 Boscarol has been operating according to quality parameters whose terms, rules and guidelines are now the custom language daily spoken in the company. All this translates into full control over purchasing, methodical planning of production, containing

costs and decidedly competitive prices. Boscarol operates in compliance with EN ISO 9001:2000 standards for the Quality System and is monitored by RTWUV. Its products are in conformity with the European Directives 94/9/ ATEX and 97/23/EC related to pressurized devices. ECONOMIZERS – REDUCERS One of the most frequent malfunctions that occur in a system is the development of overpressure. The economizer solves the problems generated by this phenomenon. A system without an economizer, if the liquids/gases contained in the tank exceed the preset pressure, even only slightly, would eliminate the excess pressure. The economizer restores the normal pressure values, recovers excess and returns the loss in the normal operating cycle, thus providing safety and economy of the entire system. Unlike safety valves, it does not release the excess pressure into the atmosphere but, after a cooling process conveys it back to its natural seat. Similar in appearance to the economizer, the function of the reducer is to reduce the upstream pressure by adjusting it to a lower value downstream, holding it constant as the upstream flow rate and pressure changes. CRYOGENIC BYPASS Having contained dimensions, they find application in tank instrument blocks. They are particularly suitable for differential pressure measurement applications and hence allow controlling the fluid INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

contained in the system. Available in two versions: three or four valves, and the option of a 40 diameter flange for connection to the control pressure gauge. Straight or square couplings with distance between centers of 35 mm (three or four valves) or 35 mm (inlet), 54 mm (outlet) in the four-valve version. GLOBE-TYPE CRYOGENIC VALVES - CLASS 300 Functional and easy to maintain, they meet the loading and drawing requirements for fluids at very low temperature (-196°C) constantly respecting the required safety margins. Available in different passage diameters - from 6 to 50 nominal diameter (1/4” to 2”) - and up to a nominal pressure of 40 (Class 300), they are an essential accessory for oxygen, nitrogen and argon storage and distribution systems. Intended for use in delicate applications, for example with oxygen, each component of the valve is degreased and assembled in a clean environment . Bodies available: straight or angled, machined from stainless steel bars, resistant to low temperatures. Available in two sleeve versions: longer for cryogenic temperatures (cold line) or standard length for ambient temperature gas (hot line), and fastened to the valve body by means of threading or flange. PRESSURE GAUGE VALVES Intended for operation in high-pressure conditions and where there are sudden thermal excursions, they are normally applied to piping, machines or systems where it is necessary to adjust or interrupt the flow of feed or waste fluids. They have been designed and constructed as a support for pressure gauges, at the same time offering the possibility of fluid control. With their easy grip they work just like a common tap. Connected to the pressure gauge,

their pressure can be reset by acting on the bleeding screw. They can also be used as on-off valves and are made of high-quality materials, selected, treated and machined according to the specific operating conditions. The bodies are available in the two- or three-way version and in different materials: brass, stainless steel 316, carbon steel (burnished or galvanized). VALVE MANIFOLD They come in the shape of a double pressure gauge valve. The main aim during the design phase was to contain the running costs when used on measuring systems and to obtain a saving by using double valves with different nipples and unions. The threaded bleeding hole allows drainage through a pipe and hence fluid recovery. The body is machined from a bar and is available in stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel. On request, versions with galvanized ASTM A105 steel accessories. VALVE PRESSURE GAUGE BYPASS In systems requiring a bypass branch in a distribution circuit, the bypass intervenes to override an operation not required by the system. The bypass branch allows momentarily not reducing the system power, overriding drops in system efficiency, thus creating an alternative to the normal path. During the course of progressive measurements, the fluid contained in the system needs to be controlled through differential type pressure gauges. Connected to a differential pressure gauge, the bypass meets this type of requirement with high-quality technical prerogatives.

GtL technologies are mainly three group of process: Gas to Methanol, Gas to Dimethyleter and Gas to Hydrocarbons. Gas to Hydrocarbons processes, which allow the synthesis of high quality hydrocarbons and chemicals, represent the most interesting challenge within the GtL technologies. GtH consist in a three steps gas conversion. The first step is a reforming or partial oxidation or both of NG or carbons to produce a mixture of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) better known as syngas. The second step is the FTS and then follow the hydrocracking/upgrading of heavy hydrocarbons (wax) obtained from FTS. The syngas production and heavy product hydrocracking/upgrading are consolidated process in the chemical organic industry and oil&gas field. However, FTS is in an improvement path even though two big company like SASOL and SHELL have built plants for commercial purposes. FTS chemical reactions can basically descripted as a combination of H2 and CO to form olefin, paraffin, alcohols and water. Final product distribution are determined by the engineering and process choices meaning the king of reactor, the catalyser, the operative conditions and the complexity of refining step. Actually the most common processes is at a temperature of °230C in a slurry reactor and with cobalt based catalyser which allows a long chain hydrocarbons production. Indeed the hydrocracking/upgrading process after FTS leads to a product distribution among which stand high quality gasoline with the best performance for engine (high cetane number) and a minor environmental impact due to low level of aromatics and sulphur compound in exhaust gas. Big companies of oil & gas field are investing money, time and knowledge in academic research for optimisation and improvement of actual reactors (heat exchange, reagents mixing, products and reagents diffusion through catalyst pellet) and catalyst (Pellet shape and composition, cobaltbased catalyst). Due to their high potentials and characteristics, FTS, today more than ever, represent a fundamental technology for the production of high quality hydrocarbons with a minor environmental impact. This is confirmed by the increasing of academic research on this process and by the increasing of new pilot and commercial purpose plant. SASOL and STATOIL-PETROSA plants in South Africa, ENI pilot plant in Italy, SHELL plants in Malaysia and Qatar are only few plants that describe the trend of oil companies to continue for improving and optimization of Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. Oil & Gas SMEs and Academic Research:A partnership to face new challenges. The collaboration between the industrial world and the academic researchers is one of the milestone of the technological and economic progress. This collaboration is a huge topic we all read about it and have a personal view. Moreover, we cannot deny his important and strategic role in the economy and life. It is one of the key solutions against recession. Focusing in the Oil & Gas field, for most of the big companies a dedicated budget for academic research is a consolidated policy. Academic research lead to major Oil & Gas company to make profit through process improvement or new process discovery. For relevant improvement or new discovery, profit comes out also from licences concessions. This centuries-old relationship between big companies and universities seems to the Oil & Gas Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) a pent world. The increase of new players and new challenge for SMEs had intensify the competition and the need of strategic collaboration with academic researchers. Of course, this requires an investment in terms of time, finance and human resources. However, each time companies and academics work together; they become a high efficiency tool for technology knowledge improvement and innovation. Investment cost of research should be part of the fixed expense of SMEs regardless the dimensions (in terms human resource and finance). It is a way to increase the profit since the performance, efficiency and liability of product (broadest sense) can be increased. Investing in academic research is also a way for the SMEs to examine in deep the knowledge of the product and to have a complete view of the market and the step-ahead technology. A strategic and long-term collaboration is the fundaments of successful investment and the best response to competition and new challenge. University and company relationship is full of fail case too. But the risk can be reduced if both parts attempts to their role and built a competent relationship based on knowledge transfer (practice for theory and vice versa). Academic and industry relationship involved several type of collaboration going from consultancy to contract research or student internship and so on. And Since academic research treats diverse topics, by collaborating with university, the SMEs, beyond the product improvement, can find sized solutions related to company management, internal software development, and a source of problem-solving and so on. This is the powerful of collaboration as almost all SMEs can choose the suitable one following their needs and financial strategy. Many factors come into play when choosing a strategic and potential successful academic collaboration: the investment cost, the kind of contract and topics, the prestige of the university and its researcher (global or local ranking of the department and the number and the pertinence of published articles by researchers). After an accurate internal evaluation of available resources and opportunities, SMEs have to do an appropriate screening before starting any collaboration. In a such way, the risk of failure is minimised. The efficiency of industry and university collaboration is confirmed by the several successful histories. And nowadays the SMEs, in contact with the academic world, can better face the challenge of the market challenge and the competition. Dr.Eng. Mor Nguirane
