CARLO SALVI NEWS

New header model 248 E

Carlo Salvi SpA is a world-renowned designer and producer of heading machines for the production of screws, semi-tubular and fully tubular rivets, bolts, special fasteners and parts with very complex shapes starting from drawn wire in coils.

-assembly of punch block unit -assembly of cutter unit -assembly of transfer fingers

Machines can be divided in three main families, namely: - single die double blow headers; - 2-die 4-blow headers; - progressive precision transfer headers.

min and max wire diameter mm (steel) 4-10 mm (titanium) max shank length max head diameter max cutting tonnage max heading tonnage stroke of P.K.O.’s

The machines of the 2-die 4-blow series are able to handle wire diameters from 1,2 to 12 mm.

They are particularly suitable for components whose heads have a very large volume or components where two dies are sufficient but at least three blows are needed, such as for instance allen screws, trimmed components etc. A great advantage of these machines is due to the fact that the third blow can very often be used as an introduction punch if parts with large heads and a very short shank have to be transferred.

Between the main standard features of this machine, we can list:

Carlo Salvi has developed a new motorized model which is called 248 E, which is an enhanced version of the model 248 machine. The machine is complete with an electro-pneumatic clutch which allows maximum heading tonnage to be applied even when jogging. The machine has been specially developed in order to minimize changeover times. Its technology and speed is such that it enables to run profitably not only large volumes but also small batches.

The header model 248 E can be enriched further with some optional items as, for examples, the quick change kit, which includes: punch block unit, transfer unit, cutter holder unit, cutter centring jig, punch centring jig, transfer centring jig

An example of set up and changeover times follows: -k.o. length adjustment first die -k.o. length adjustment second die -cutoff length adjustment -adjustment of opening and closing cams -assembly of dies

30 seconds 30 seconds 30 seconds

-linear wire feed, without rolls without wire-stop -K.O. die side and punch side -motorized lifting/lowering of transfer unit -conveyor -bad part divert -transfer fingers

To handle of material like titanium and super alloys, which can not be formed with the cold heading system, the header can be equipped with a pre-heating system. The customer can decide to install on the header model 248 E the heating system with coil housed on the die holder, or the resin-bonded inductor positioned into the bedframe. In the event of special production needs, it is possible to evaluate also to install both kind of inductors.

NEWS HEILA CRANES

Heila Cranes industry

redefines

In a market with saturated and repetitive crane design characteristics to withstand heavy duty operations, increased lifting performance, stability, and limited parking position are more often required to be provided. A development of features that should bring to ship owners additional value. Being this a common challenge for crane makers, for Heila instead, used to supply tailor made cranes as their peculiarity for proper fitting on each vessel. Every single crane is “equally different”. This is where the HEILA knuckle telescope cranes can overcome the need and provide a grip to these requirements. Refit Vs Newbuild units Upgrading or converting of an existing vessel can be competitive with newbuild options if prepared and managed well. Cost saving from the necessity of newbuilding purchasing as a substantial investment that often takes (too) much time to obtain maximum benefit from an emerging opportunity. Accomplishing the needed maintenance and modernization is essential to creating a competitive maritime capability. Improved efficiency by proven design As a result of 36 year history expertize, in June 2017, Heila has signed an order for the construction of a giant

With only 60Ton of deadweight, this crane can be installed on the smallest ship without impacting on the stability, with a low power consumption of just 320kW to further decrease the demand to the vessel’s genset. Telescopic arms up to 30 meters radius, with very limited parking space; Only 6 meters required, suitable for fitting of a 40m vessels length and most spacesensitive Oil & Gas platform; Funding these improvements has relied on a costsharing formula for depending projects. This versatility will enable the owners to bid for different charters, (platform supply vessels) (ROV lifting, buoy, Anchor handling) Allowing the owner to: -engage the existing unit for multi-purpose chartering, -avoiding crane replacements due to charter requirement, -cut off mobilization time, be more competitive and increase the numbers of awarded charter during bidding, -cut off vessel downtime, saving money Heila covers all phases of project development from engineering to service assistance, having every crane fitted with the latest technology and know-how,

The use of low quality and too cheap materials result in missing costumers. The use limits of the normal roof wind ventilators in the absence of wind are well known. No wind, no air exchange. Furthermore, when the wind is not constant, the air exchange is variable without any assurance of the flow. The Electroaspiromatic solves this problem and cancels the lack. All our ventilators are suitable for hot fumes extraction and can be used to increase the draft of fireplaces.

ELEVATED FLARE SYSTEMS EQUIPMENTS

Mor Nguirane Dott. Ing. Mor Nguirane Chemical Engineer

As mentioned in previous issue, here we will discuss about main components of elevated flare systems. Elevated flare system can have different components following its purpose, the composition of relief gas, environmental conditions. It’s mainly composed by a tip, a pilot or ignition device that ignites the relief gas because the discharge may be either continuous or intermittent. An ignition and control panel to ignite and control pilot, a purge system to avoid flame flashback in to the stack. A stack to carry the discharge gas to the tip and in case of self-supporting flare to support the overall system. In between flare header and the stack, a Knockout Drum (KOD) and a Liquid Seal. The KOD is used to separate liquids in within the exhaust gas stream and limit liquid droplet size entrained with gas to the flare. The liquid seal is design to prevent flame from flare riser back to flare headers and avoid air ingress into flare system during sudden temperature changes leading to condensation and maintain positive system pressure. Flare system may also include control valves, utility piping which include air compressed pipe, fuel gas, steam pipe along the stack.

FLARE TIP:

Flare tip is designed for a high combustion efficiency of relief gases, an allowable noise level and optimum smoke suppression (when required). Relief gas exit velocity is a design parameter which influence tip diameter and pressure drop. At the same flow rate of relief gases, a small tip diameter leads to high exit velocity (consequently allow the flame to lift off the tip), high pressure drop and noise. While a large tip diameter leads to low exit velocity so low pressure drop, a slow combustion and flame return in the tip which can reduce its service life. Therefore, the tip diameter is a balance of a limited pressure drop and noise, a suitable exit velocity to guarantee flame lift off and avoid flame return. Usually it’s up to the supplier to provide the most suitable tip diameter following user requirements.

32

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Based on the exit gas velocity, flare tip can be sonic or sub-sonic. API 521 recommendations are a 0.2 Mach in normal release conditions and 0.5 Mach in emergency relief for sub-sonic flare and a 1 - 0.8 Mach for a sonic flare. The exit velocity can also be subject to regulations f.e. VOC flare tip in USA with the 40 CFR 60.18 requirements. Flare tip are equipped with pilots, a windshield and flame retention ring to provide flame stability and nozzles for steam or air in case of assisted smokeless flare. Pilots are critical for relief gases combustion ignition and they

should always provide flame for reliable ignition of exhaust gases.

Indeed, they are designed as API 537 recommendations, to remain lit and capable of being relit at wind speeds up to 160 km/h under dry conditions. Flare tip can be classified upon operating pressure, smoke suppression, single point or multiple point burners etc... The most common flare tip are: 1. Open Pipe flare tips or Standard flare tip used for combustion of gases that do not produce smoke (f.e. light hydrocarbon), gases with a low heating value, or for installations where smokeless combustion of heavy hydrocarbons is not required. (see fig.1 on left) 2. Smoke Assisted Flare tip is like open pipe flare tip with steam injection system. Steam injection is provided reduce the smoke formation (see fig.1 on right). 3. Air Assisted Flare tip: when either steam nor assist gas is available for smoke suppression, blowers can be used to inject combustion air directly into the waste gas stream as it exits the flare tip. Combustion efficiency of flared gas is increased by providing air flow which will reduce smoke formation. 4. Gas Assisted Flare tip: tip with high pressure gas injection. This will increase the turbulence at flare tip and reduce the smoke formation. Fuel gas can be generally used as assist gas. Fuel gas injection can be either continuous or initiated manually based on monitoring of flare tip. 5. Coanda flare tip: they use the Coanda effect to entrain and mix air into the hydrocarbon gas stream. The Coanda effect is a gas-adhesion principle that dramatically enhances the combustion process.

The air turbulently mixes with the gas flow, resulting in high-efficiency combustion. Smokeless, low radiation combustion can be achieved without the need to introduce utility steam or air. 6. Multiple nozzle flare tip: They are used where high flare gas pressures are available (1 barg and up) and where it is preferred to have some smokeless burning capability and also lower radiation levels. These kinds of flares are used for HP flare application. They have good combustion efficiency and less chances of smoke formation.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

High temperature is reached during the combustion and flare tip components material must guarantee an excellent mechanical stability and a corrosion resistance at such temperature. Most used material are stainless steel alloy: AISI 304/AISI 316/AISI 310 and high-performance alloys: Incolloy and Inconel mostly. Flare ignition and control system: Flare ignition system are pilots and pilots’ ignition device. Pilots are necessary to achieve optimum flare reliability. Critical flaring system such as sour gas, ammonia flares must operate pilots, continuously monitor them and have a reliable ignition system. Pilot gas supply should be stable and continuous. The number of the pilot burners should be determined following above API 537 recommendation in table (1). The pilot gas flow to achieve the required duty is determined by the fuel gas composition.

MINIMUM NUMBER OF PILOTS 1 (2 for toxic gas, redundancy (2)) 2 3 4 5

FLARE TIP OUTER DIAMETER, DN up to 200 > 200 to 600 > 600 to 1050 > 1050 to 1500 > 1500

Table 1: API 537 recommendations for minimum number of pilots and flare tip outer diameter. (2) Good design practice suggests a minimum of 2 pilot for redundancy (more reliable).

The most widely used flare pilot ignition system is the flame front generator (FFG). The FFG remained the most reliable pilot ignition system. With FFG, a compressed air and fuel gas are metered through control valves into a mixing chamber located at grade. Downstream of the mixing chamber there is a sparking device to initiate the flame front. The ignition line from panel to flare pilot is filled with flammable fuel gas- air mixture and spark introduced. Mixtures ignited and flame front travels through piping to ignite pilot at flare tip. The great advantage of FFG is that the flow controls and the sparking device are at grade far away from harmful radiation level and can be serviced while the flare is in operation. Systems can be fully automated or manual.

Fig. 2: An automated FFG ready for installation

Besides FFG, the high-energy ignition (HEI) system can be used. Spark ignition at the flare pilot nozzle is simple and easy to automate. With HEI systems, electrodes capable of high energy or high voltage discharge are located near pilot tip for the spark generation. In some cases, the service life of the sparking device may be shortened due to continuous exposure to the pilot or flare flame once ignition is established. This can be a problem because neither the flare pilot nor its igniter assembly can be replaced while the flare is in operation. Due to its importance, pilots flame are monitored. Pilot status can be determined by several means including heat, ionized gas, light or sound generated by the flame. To provide a reliable control of pilot status thermocouples, flame ionization detection, IR or UV systems and acoustic systems can be used. All signals and alarms from control devices are collected in the control panel and then send to control room. Purge system: Purge system prevents air infiltration into the flare system at low flow rates and reduce the amount of continuous purge gas injection into flare stack. Purge system design can be a Velocity Seal or Buoyancy seal known as molecular seal. Velocity seal is the simplest of purge system and takes the form of a truncated cone normally situated just above the flare tip inlet flange (see fig. 3). It provides the flare system with a physical barrier to air penetration down the inside wall of the riser and maximizes the velocity of the purge gas in the open center of the riser, further reducing the risk of air ingress.

Fig. 3: Flare tip with velocity seal (Top view)

Molecular seal offer best performance in terms of purge gas flow rate reduction. It is effectively a pressure vessel installed just below the flare tip within which labyrinth path are design for purge gas. The seal is normally flanged between the flare tip and stack and is designed to prevent air from entering the flare system. The molecular seal has the disadvantages of significantly adding wind loading to the stack meaning further critical impact on flare structural design.

Flare Stack

Main flare stack are: 1. Self-supported stacks: this is the simplest and most economical design for applications requiring short-stack heights (up to 30 m max. 50 m). As the flare height or wind loading increases, the diameter and wall thickness required become very large and expensive. 2. Guy wire supported stacks: this is the most economical design in the 30 m to 105 m height range. The design can be a single-diameter riser or a cantilevered design. Normally, sets of 3 wires are anchored 120 degrees apart at various elevations. Guy wire stack required a wide available area. 3. Derrick supported stacks: this is the most feasible design for stack heights above 105 They use a single-diameter riser supported by a bolted framework of supports. Derrick supports sometimes are chosen over guy-wire-supported stacks when a limited footprint is desired. Knockout Drum (KOD)

Stack reliability is based on structural criteria. Structural design is the most challenging part during flare system design and requires a complete knowledge of standards, local regulations and good design practice. Refer to API standards and local regulation for a suitable structural design of the stacks. KOD are pressure vessels located within the main HP and LP flare headers. They are designed for the removal of condensate and entrained liquid to prevent liquid carryover and possible flaming rain. This is achieved primarily by increasing the flow area, thus reducing the gas velocity and allowing the heavier entrained liquid droplets to fall from the gas stream, into the base of the drum, where they are collected and discharged by pumps. KO drums are normally designed to remove 300 to 600 Âľm diameter droplets. This specification together with exhaust stream properties define the overall dimensions of KOD.

Water Seal (WS)

Water seal is designed to either protect the flare header from flash back or divert the gas flow to either a staged flare or from a flare gas recovery system to a flare. This is achieved by directing the flare gas through a seal usually formed by water. The depth of the liquid determines the system back pressure so in some cases it is also used to maintain a positive pressure in upstream piping. Mixture of water and glycol or antifreeze liquids are used when low temperatures gases are involved. KOD and Water Seal can be merged in one equipment forming the base of the flare stack (see fig. 4).

Fig. 4: A vertical KOD-WS ready for transportation and installation. Dimensions of KOD-WS are diam.: ~ 4 m and H ~ 15 m.

Organic Rankine Cycle: an effective solution for heat recovery in the Oil & Gas industry

In the Oil&Gas supply chain, several processes produce a considerable amount of heat, currently wasted in the atmosphere: Associated Petroleum Gas (also known as flare gas) characterizes the upstream, whereas high-temperature refining processes are typical of the downstream. In the middle, the transport of both oil and natural gas requires a not negligible amount of energy. In this context, pipelines are the preferred choice where gas compressor stations (or oil pumping stations) usually operate open-cycle gas turbines to pump the products along the pipeline. Gas turbines are a simple and reliable technology, but they are not very efficient and they waste a considerable amount of energy in the atmosphere through the exhaust. Specifically, when analyzing the natural gas transport, it is possible to define the typical configuration of a gas compressor station, where several gas turbines with limited capacity (< 50 MW each) work in parallel to drive natural gas compressors. Such small-to-medium size gas turbines do not allow the implementation of traditional combined Rankine Cycle. Indeed their exhaust gas temperatures and flow may not be sufficiently high, especially under partial load conditions, to generate steam at the conditions needed to achieve a high overall electrical efficiency, while maintaining good flexibility. An alternative, viable and effective solution is the implementation of a combined cycle based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). ORC technology, thanks to the use of specific organic working fluids, permits an efficient exploitation of high-

40

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

to-low temperatures exhaust gas streams, as it could be the case for smaller gas turbines, especially when working on poor quality fuels. In addition, the specific features of the organic fluids used lead to relevant technical advantages, such as high turbine efficiency (up to 90%), low mechanical stress of the turbine (low rotational speed and low tip speed), no blades erosion, no oxidation, high efficiency at partial loads and with low temperature sources. These characteristics result in an overall heat recovery system that is completely automatic, with simple start-stop procedures and quiet running, and that has high availability and flexibility while maintaining long lifetime (>20 years) and minimum O&M requirements and costs. Considering also that the ORC unit can be air condensed (therefore ensuring an operation with no water consumption), the ORC technology is perfectly suited for application in areas where water supply can be problematic or even impossible. Among its 300 ORC plants operating worldwide and other 50 units under construction, Turboden has fieldproven experience in combined cycle projects with different plants exploited as bottoming cycle of both open cycle gas turbines and reciprocating engines. The latest contracts awarded in this field are located in Uzbekistan, where two Turboden power plants are under construction, recovering heat from three GE LM1600 gas turbines and one GE LM2500 gas turbine respectively.

Energ y markets in transition: BP S tatistical Review shows long-term shif ts under way • Strong oil demand and weaker supply growth rebalance oil markets; inventories continue to weigh on oil prices • Energy mix shifting; rising renewable energy offsetting steep falls in coal use • Carbon emissions flat for third year, driven by weak energy demand and cleaner energy mix The 2017 edition of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, published today, shows global energy markets continuing to undergo long-term changes as they also adapt to nearer-term price challenges. Data published in the Review - the 66th annual edition - clearly demonstrate the long-term transitions

NEWS PRESS RELEASE

now underway in the markets, with a shift to slower growth in global energy demand, demand moving strongly towards the fast-growing developing economies of Asia, and a marked shift towards lower carbon fuels as renewable energy continues to grow strongly and coal use falls. At the same time, energy markets are adjusting effectively to nearer-term challenges, with the oil market in particular adjusting in 2016 to the oversupply that has dominated the market in recent years. Introducing the Review, Bob Dudley, BP group chief executive, said: “Global energy markets are in transition. The longer-term trends we can see in this data are changing the patterns of demand and the mix of supply as the world works to meet the challenge of supplying the energy it needs while also reducing carbon emissions. At the same time markets are responding to shorter-run run factors, most notably the oversupply that has weighed on oil prices for the past three years. “To understand these forces at work and their implications for the future, we need timely, reliable data. This is why we produce the Statistical Review - to provide the accurate global information that will contribute to discussion, debate and informed decision-making around the world.” In 2016, global energy demand was weak for the third consecutive year, growing by just 1%, around half the average growth rate of the past decade. Once again, almost all this growth came from fast-growing developing economies, with China and India together accounting for half of all growth. The year’s low prices drove demand for oil higher by 1.6% while growth in production was limited to only 0.5%. As a result, the oil market returned broadly back into balance by mid-year, but prices continued to be depressed by the large overhang of built-up inventories. Natural gas production was also adversely affected by low prices, growing by only 0.3%. US gas output fell in 2016, the first reduction since the advent of the shale revolution in the mid-2000s. Renewables were again the fastest-growing of all energy sources, rising by 12%. Although providing still only 4% of total primary energy, the growth in renewables represented almost a third of the total growth in energy demand in 2016. In contrast, use of coal - the most carbon-intensive of the fossil fuels - fell steeply for a second year, down by 1.7%, due primarily to falling demand from both the US and China. The combination of weak energy demand growth and the shifting fuel mix meant that global carbon emissions are estimated to have grown by only 0.1% - making 2016 the third consecutive year of flat or falling emissions. This marks the lowest three-year average for emissions growth since 1981-83. Bob Dudley commented: “While welcome, it is not yet clear how much of this break from the past is structural and will persist. We need to keep up our focus and efforts on reducing carbon emissions. BP supports the aims set out in the COP21 Paris meetings and is committed to playing our part to help achieve them.”

Review highlights

Primary energy • Global energy demand grew by 1% in 2016 - similar to rises of 0.9% and 1% seen in 2015 and 2014 respectively and significantly lower than the 10-year average rate of growth of 1.8%. • Almost all growth came from fast-growing developing economies; China and India together accounted for around half of all growth. • Indian energy demand grew by 5.4%, a similar rate to that seen in recent years. • Chinese energy demand, however, grew by 1.3%. This is close to the 1.2% rise in energy demand in 2015 and around a quarter of its 10-year average growth. Average growth during 2015 and 2016 was the lowest over a two-year period since 1997-98. Despite this slowing, the incremental increase in demand in

China made it the world’s largest energy growth market for the 16th consecutive year. • Demand from the developed OECD countries remained essentially flat (rising just 0.2%).

Oil • Dated Brent averaged $44 a barrel in 2016, down from $52 in 2015 and the lowest annual average price since 2004. • Global oil consumption grew strongly, rising by 1.6%, or 1.6 million barrels a day (mmb/d), above the 10-year average rate for a second consecutive year. Strong increases in demand were seen from India (up 0.3mmb/d) and Europe (up 0.3mmb/d) and while demand from China continued to grow (up 0.4mmb/d) it was lower than in recent years. • Weak prices impacted the growth of global oil production which rose by just 0.5% - the lowest increase since 2009 - or 0.4mmb/d. • Within this total, production from OPEC increased by 1.2mmb/d, with significant increases seen from Iran (up 0.7mmb/d), Iraq (up 0.4mmb/d) and Saudi Arabia (up 0.4mmb/d). • In contrast, non-OPEC oil production fell by 0.8mmb/d, the biggest annual decline for around 25 years. The largest output falls were from the US (down 0.4mmb/d), China and Nigeria (each down 0.3mmbd).

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

NEWS PRESS RELEASE

Natural gas • Global natural gas consumption rose by 1.5% in 2016, slower than the 10-year average rate of 2.3%. However, there were strong increases in gas consumption in Europe (up 6%), the Middle East (up 3.5%) and China (up 7.7%). • Global natural gas production rose by only 0.3% - the weakest growth in gas output for 34 years, outside the financial crisis. With lower gas prices, US gas production fell for the first time since the shale gas revolution began. Australian gas production rose significantly as new LNG facilities came on stream. • Global LNG imports/exports grew by 6.2%, driven by the new Australian output. LNG production is expected to grow by around 30% in next three years as further new projects come on line. • The rise of LNG trade reflects an ongoing continuing fundamental shift in global gas markets towards greater integration, but also towards more competitive and flexible markets - with increasing volumes of LNG under shorter or smaller contracts or uncontracted.

Coal • Global coal consumption fell for the second successive year, down by 1.7% or 53 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe). This decline brought coal’s share of primary energy production to 28.1%, its lowest share since 2004. • Declining consumption was driven primarily by the US (down 8.8%, 33Mtoe), and China (down 1.6%, 26Mtoe). • World coal production fell by 6.2% or 231Mtoe, the largest annual decline on record. The falls in production were again driven by China (down 7.9% or 140Mtoe) and the US (down 19%, or 85Mtoe). • In the UK, coal consumption more than halved (-52.5%). UK coal consumption has now fallen to levels last seen at the start of the Industrial Revolution around 200 years ago. The UK power sector recorded its first ‘coal-free’ day in April 2017. Renewables • Once again, renewables were the fastest growing energy source in 2016. Not including hydroelectric power, renewable energy grew by 12%. While below the 10-year average rate of growth for renewables of 15.7%, this still represented the largest annual incremental increase in output on record (an increase of 55Mtoe - more than the decline in coal consumption). • Renewables now provide a share of just under 4% of primary energy. • More than half of growth in renewable power came from wind, which rose by 16% in the year. Solar energy grew by 30%. Despite solar energy making up only 18% of renewables output, growth in solar represented around a third of the overall growth in renewable power. • In 2016, China became the world’s largest single producer of renewable power, overtaking the US, and Asia Pacific overtook Europe & Eurasia to become the largest producing region for renewable power.

Other fuels • Nuclear power generation grew by 1.3%, or 9.3Mtoe, in 2016. A 24.5% annual increase in Chinese nuclear output accounted for all the net growth in nuclear power. China’s incremental increase of 9.6Mtoe was the largest from any country since 2004. • Hydroelectric power generation increased by 2.8% in 2016 - rising by 27.1Mtoe. The largest incremental growth again came from China and then the US.

This new approach also comes at a time when global economic growth and energy demand is shifting East. These shifting trends sit alongside a rapid increase in Asian demand for products derived from hydrocarbons - namely petrochemicals, plastics and polymers - which is expected to more than double in the next 25 years. The region is also home to considerable investment, financing and banking expertise that ADNOC will seek to leverage as part of its new partnership model. ADNOC is therefore increasingly focused on building and developing long-term partnerships with both new and existing counter parties in China and Japan, as well as across the fast-growing Asia region. H.E. Dr. Al Jaber commented during his visit, “Chinese and Japanese companies have been amongst our most important and longest-standing partners and Asia represents tremendous growth opportunities for ADNOC. We are therefore seeking partners to co-invest across the different parts of our value chain and who will bring operational expertise and technology, as well as the ability to secure greater access to these fast-growing markets.” ADNOC has existing partnerships with a number of Chinese and Japanese companies across its upstream, midstream and downstream businesses. At the heart of ADNOC’s new partnership model is a range of new and compelling co-investment opportunities from across its value chain. Current and potential partners expressed interest in ADNOC’s new partnership and investment opportunities. This is due to a combination of their own domestic demand requirements for energy and petrochemical products, as well as the attractive investment and growth profiles of the opportunities themselves. In China, H.E. Dr. Al Jaber met with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs including H.E. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China and Mr. Deng Li, Director-General for the MENA Region. He also met with existing and new, potential partners to brief them about ADNOC’s new, expanded partnership approach. In Japan, H.E. Dr. Al Jaber had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan. Dr. Al Jaber conveyed the greetings of the UAE leadership to Prime Minister Abe and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in the energy sector. In addition to Prime Minister Abe, Dr. Al Jaber also met with H.E. Fumio Kishida, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. H.E. Dr. Al Jaber held further meetings and discussions with ADNOC’s Japanese partners to discuss ADNOC’s new partnership and co-investment opportunities. H.E. Dr. Al Jaber concluded, “As ADNOC embarks on its new approach, we look forward to building on our successful partnerships in both China and Japan. We believe our mutual goals and objectives are aligned and that committed and long term collaboration will help meet the growing energy demand of both countries, as well as promote sustainable economic growth and trade.” H.E. Dr. Al Jaber’s visit to Japan coincided with the fifth Abu Dhabi-Japan Economic Council meeting in Tokyo where a number of senior Abu Dhabi officials discussed potential areas of cooperation around key economic sectors, including oil and gas.

Back to Basics: Centrifugal Pump Troubleshooting

From oil and gas, refining and petrochemicals, water and wastewater, pulp and paper, combustion and non–combustion, and alternative energy process plants,

centrifugal pumps are one of the integral process equipment’s. This is because liquid flow and

control from a region of lower pressure to a region of higher pressure allows for efficient running and reliability of process plant systems. Centrifugal pumps can come in various sizes which can depend of the discharge pressure, head, volume and physical properties of liquid to be pumped and material of construction. There are various components (impeller, pump casing, rotor (shaft), couplings, shaft seal and bearings) of centrifugal pump that has to work effectively in

order to extend the operating life of the pump.

The shaft seal is an important part of centrifugal pump because it simultaneously enables the rotor to rotate freely while preventing liquid leakage into the atmosphere and air seepage into the pump. Liquid leakage will lead to a loss of pressure loss and loss of liquid product. This can also pose environmental concerns where the liquid is eco-toxic etc. On the other hand, air seepage into the pump will introduce air pockets in the liquid and damage not only the pump parts but Chikezie Nwaoha PhD student and Research downstream process equipment’s. Engineer, University of The transmission of input power from the driver (motor) to the pump impeller is Regina (Saskatchewan, done by the shaft. This is achieved by connecting the pump shaft to the driver shaft with couplings. The pump casing (volute) can be easily seen from the exterior part CANADA). of the centrifugal pump. It generally holds the pumped liquid and also serves as a guide for the liquid flowing in and out of the pump impeller. The impeller which is located almost inside the casing is the prime source of energy for the liquid being pumped. It accelerates the liquid to attain the desired discharge pressure. Pump bearings are also known as anti–friction bearings because they are designed to keep the pump shaft in place (maintain its position) and also cope with the loads that act on the shaft due to the rotation of the impeller.

Predictive and preventive maintenance is the best approach towards extending the service life of centrifugal pumps. Table 1 highlights

common problems associated with centrifugal pumps and their respective troubleshooting strategies.

Possible remedies

A. Pump noise level is high Is noise from the pump drive?

Conduct coupling inspection for any defect or misalignment. If so, replace couplings.

Pump is vibrating?

Refer pump for inspection services and maintenance.

Level of lubricating oil is adequate?

Refill lubricating oil. If lubricating oil is degraded, drain the old lubricating oil and refill with new one.

B. No liquid discharge noticed Pump drive is commissioned?

Confirm that pump drive or motor is functioning. Check if the pump start button is turned on. If the above remedies are in place, then restart pump.

Pump is well coupled to the pump drive?

Check the pump coupling for proper connection. Check for any defects on the coupling connection.

The pump drain valve is properly closed?

Make sure all drain valve(s) are closed appropriately.

Is the discharge pressure gauge in operation and functioning?

Confirm that the discharge pressure gauge is well installed and working properly. If faulty, replace the pressure gauge.

Are the suction and discharge lines open?

Check status of the suction and discharge valves. If closed, crack open the valves. Also confirm that the valves are not clogged. If not, shut down pump and clean the lines.

Common Pump Problems

Possible remedies

C. Pump drive fail to pick Pump earth cable is fixed?

If not, fix earth cable.

Energy supply is available?

Confirm that energy supply is available and commissioned. The energy source can be electric, steam, hydraulic and gas.

D. Pump leakage Is casing not properly tightened?

All bolts and connections of the pump casing should be well tightened. If leak persist, refer pump for inspection for possible worn parts of the casing.

Leaking through the shaft seal region?

Replace damaged shaft seal. Also replace with appropriate shaft seals. Confirm that seals are well in place and in position.

Is drain valve slightly open?

Check all drain valves fully closed.

E. Power consumption is too high Damaged bearings?

Check proper lubrication of the bearings. Check all bearings are well in position. Replace bearings if need be.

Common Pump Problems Pumping liquid with higher viscosity?

Check for possible liquid contamination and also clean the upstream filter. If filter is not installed upstream of the pump this should be done. In rare cases, liquid–liquid separation should be done upstream of the pump.

F. Rise in pump temperature Cooling system is lined up?

Check that the cooling system is commissioned. The cooling medium is mostly water but can be other coolants. Confirm that the cooling medium is void of any contamination that reduces heat transfer. Confirm that the flow rate of the cooling medium is within the recommended value.

Lubricating oil level is suitable?

Confirm that lubricating oil level is sufficient enough. If not, refill lubricating oil. Check is the lubricating oil is degraded and replace accordingly. This is usually noticed by the color change of lubricating oil.

It is important to have in mind that most times a combination of the troubleshooting strategies and remedies are employed to combat any associated problems. In conclusion, a good understanding of the operation and maintenance of a centrifugal pump will go a long way toward extending the service life and reliability.

FLUORTECNO PROCESS

Guardian SiC “armoured” heat exchangers whit gaskets in KAFLON 79P

“GUARDIAN HPTFE+Sic”

“bellows PTFE”

Traditional SiC heat exchangers offer the advantage of the very high heat exchange coefficient typical of silicon carbide. The weak point of the system is the sealing between the separation plates, and the tubes. At 100°C PTFE loses on tensive stress thus hindering the proper sealing between plates and tubes. Leaks from traditional heat exchangers are actually due to fluid leakage near the plates.

Guardian™ heat exchangers are provided with a sealing system realized through Guaflon™ made (modified filler PTFE) threaded bushings. These bushings couple to the threading of the P.T.F.E. plate thus blocking the tubes. The seal is provided by elastomeric o-rings that have the difficult task of contemporaneously allowing the tubes’ expansion without compromising the seal tightness.

The GUASTALLO Research & Development department has worked during the last three years to optimising a new technology for the manufacturing of heat exchangers. The GUARDIAN™ armoured P.T.F.E. exchanger.

Among all perfluoroelastomers available on the market, Guardian heat exchangers or equipped with o- rings made of Kaflon™79P, the one that possesses the highest degree of elasticity, softness and thermal resistance.

The special “armoured” plates are made out of stainless steel perforated plates (see picture) with an outer PTFE lining of suitable thickness. While the stainless steel armour guarantees rigidity to the separation plates, the PTFE lining assures a perfect chemical inertia. Splitting the tasks of providing structural rigidity and resisting to chemical aggressions, brings to an element of peerless characteristics of reliability and life cycle duration.

1’000’000 cSt. In the operating scheme is shown how the rotations of the gears displace the product from the inlet side to the outlet side. The entire operation can be resumed in three main phases: Suction, Delivery and Discharge. Into a gear pumps the two rotors, that are respectively called driving and driven rotor, are seated in a body that round them from all side. On the both sides of the mesh zone of the teeth there is a hole in the body of the pump. These holes are respectively called suction and discharge. Spinning the rotors the fluid is moved, through the chambers between the teeth of the rotors and the body, from the suction side to the discharge side. Fluid does not pass through the meshing zone of the gears due to small tolerances. A back-flow of the fluid is blocked by the contact of the teeth of the two rotors in the meshing zone. ADVANDAGE Gear pumps need a lesser NPSH and have better properties of delivery repeatability. Gear pumps, being rotary volumetric pumps, are the best metering pumps, since their delivery depends directly on the revolutions rate. Also gear pumps will not generate flow pulsations, as standard metering pumps do, making the media flow constant. MAIN APPLICATIONS Lube oil Pumps Fuel Pumps Chemicals Pumps Bitumen Pumps Foam Pumps

EXPLORING NEW FUEL FORMULATIONS

and new engine technologies through accurate chemical kinetics Pursuing a sustainable energy scenario for transportation requires the blending of renewable fuels such as alcohols (ethanol, butanol, pentanol) into typical commercial fuels from fossil sources. The identification of a new fuel candidate firstly depends on

the sustainability of its production process, and is driven by new international regulations strongly encouraging increasing contents of biofuels in commercial fuels. A number of physico-chemical properties (energy

density, viscosity, boiling point, stability, hygroscopicity etc.) ensure the compatibility of the new fuel with existing infrastructures (engines, burners, pipes, tanks etc.) and an efficient blending with market fuels. Within this scenario, the

development of accurate chemical kinetic models allows the understanding of the autoignition propensity of a fuel, and the accurate prediction of its environmental impact (i.e. pollutant formation).

In fact, the combustion properties of interest (ignitability, flammability limts etc.) and the subsequent formation of pollutants (e.g. NOx, particulate matter) are explained on the basis of an extremely complicated network of 104s of chemical reactions involving 103s of chemical species. The evolution of such system strongly depends on local conditions of temperature, pressure and composition. The development of chemical kinetic models has been driving the design of new burner and engine technologies for 40-30 years (Ranzi et al., Progress in Energy and Combustion Science 2001). The validation of such kinetic models is typically obtained through comparison with some very specific experimental measurement covering wide ranges of temperatures (2500-500 K) and pressures (100-1 atm). Ignition delay times in rapid compression machines (RCM) and shock-tubes (ST), laminar flame speed and species evolution measurements are only a few examples (Figure 1).

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Figure 1: Experimental (symbols) and simulated ignition delay times of stoichiometric (φ=1.0) n-pentanol/air mixtures (Pelucchi et al., SAE Technical Paper, 2017)

Recent advancements in measuring techniques and increasing theoretical knowledge (Klippenstein, Proceeding of the Combustion Institute, 2017) drives the development of very accurate kinetic models, of use for large-scale computations of real systems. As represented in Figure 2, the presence of oxygenated functional groups in typical biofuel molecules (n-butanol) modifies chemical bond strengths and activate-or deactivate-specific chemical pathways, (Pelucchi et al., Energy&Fuels, 2017) directly impacting combustion performances and emissions. Combustion scientists and engineers iteratively develop, improve and seek for an accurate chemical description of the reactivity of reference components typically used as a simplified representation of real gasolines. n-heptane, iso-octane, cetane, iso-cetane, toluene, butanol, methyl-esters are within the most common reference components. As an example, the presence of the hydroxyl moiety (R-OH) in a generic alcohol molecule, compared to its parent alkane (Figure 2: butanol and butane), reduces the bond strengths of C-H bonds. This causes a decrease in reactivity at lower temperatures (<~1000 K), due to the activation of alternative pathways.

Figure 2: C−H (black) and C−C (red) bond dissociation energies (kcal mol1−). Brackets [] experimental values, parenthese (difference from a C-H primary bond). (Pelucchi et al. Energy & Fuels, 2017)

As the carbon chain length increases (n-butanol<n-pentanol<n-hexanol) the influence of the hydroxyl moiety fades. This translates into a decreasing octane rating (RON: ethanol 109, n-butanol 98, n-pentanol 80, n-hexanol 56) that makes longer alcohols suitable for new engine technologies in some way implementing features of both gasoline and diesel engines. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) and Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) engines are the most typical examples (Kalghatgi, International Journal of Engine Research, 2014). The CRECK modeling group at Politecnico di Milano recently evaluated the performances of n-butanol and n-pentanol in a HCCI engine (Pelucchi et al., SAE Technical Paper, 2017), coupling the detailed kinetic model and the multi-zone HCCI engine model internally developed (Bissoli et al., Applied Energy, 2017; Pelucchi et al., Energy&Fuels, 2017). Figure 3 shows typical stability maps of HCCI engines as a function of engine load (Îť=1 stoichiometric fuel/air conditions, Îť>1 air excess) and amount of exhaust gas recirculation (mass %). The areas within the lines represent the conditions at which the fuel guarantees a stable HCCI regime. Pure alcohols and butanol/gasoline blends (TRF/butanol, RON=95) largely extend the stability region of gasoline reference mixtures (PRF100 RON=100, PRF80 RON=80). These

observations further confirm the suitability of alcohols for HCCI technology.

TAMINI TRASFORMATORI ELECTRICAL

The EAF SMARTRAFO SOLUTION: designed for INDUSTRY 4.0

The reduction of energy consumptions is a relevant topic all around the world, since recently the international attention has been focused on stringent and environmental-friendly targets. These targets result imperative for the steel industry as it is one of the major energy consumer among the different sectors. THE EAF SMARTRAFO The TAMINI EAF SMARTrafo Solution introduces a true revolution in the EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) steel melting process. This customizable transformer is designed to minimize energy losses, its dimensions and features are determined on the basis of the characteristics of the EAF where it will be installed to optimize system efficiency. The main task of this transformer is to convert the electrical, voltage and current parameters required to melt ferrous metals using electric arc technology, at voltage ratings up to 1600V and up to 200kA in recent developments. Reducing energy consumption by even a few kWh/t is not easy but it remains a fundamental objective of modern steel mills, and the transformer is a cornerstone in achieving this objective. Losses generated by the conversion process, characterized by high powers and currents, cannot be underestimated in the analysis of investments and operating costs. Investing in EAF SMARTrafo today

means long-term savings in energy and maintenance costs and a long lifecycle of the equipment. The EAF SMARTrafo Solution is an exceptional innovation for transformers in the steel industry, in that the user can calibrate energy supply based on the actual use of the system (energy is consumed only when needed, depending on the actual environmental conditions and production flows). THE MONITORING & CONTROL SYSTEM One of the EAF SMARTrafo Solution main strengths is the implementation of a monitoring and control system for the transformer and its main components to improve their lifecycle and plan checks and maintenance interventions according to a schedule determined on the basis of actual utilization and not at pre-set intervals, as is common practice today. The transformer is equipped with a set of indicators that tracks its operation and continuously transmits data to a monitoring and control device. The monitoring system processes the data transmitted by the indicators and coordinates the operation of the control system connected to the oil pump, which regulates the cooler’s functioning according to the real need, and to the tap changer, which sets the voltage and the current according to the production process need. The monitoring and control device can match the

ELECTRICAL TAMINI TRASFORMATORI data transmitted by the indicators with a range settled by default in a “cloud”, that’s why it is able to act independently and to send out, in case of any malfunction, an alert that promptly reaches the Tamini Service Team. The monitoring data are available in real time and at any moment both by the manufacturer and the final user thanks to a software and a web portal specially designed. This one could be defined a cyber-physical system which monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world, make decentralized decisions and, at the same time, communicate and cooperate with humans in real time. The introduction

of such a system is the first step to transform the Tamini Factory in a “smart factory” according the current trend called Industry 4.0. CONCLUSION The validity of the system has been confirmed by studies on the exceptional performance and actual savings, conducted by the faculty of Engineering at Brescia University (Italy). This joint collaboration with the academic world is a proof of the corporate strong commitment to R&D in latest technology, out of the logic of standard production in favor of quality customized solutions.

FAIRS ACHEMA

A focus on trends that shape the process industry In 2018 the leading global trade show for the process industries will zero in on three topics that apply to all the varied sectors of the process industry and all the exhibition groups: Flexible Production, Biotech for Chemistry, and Chemical and Pharmaceutical Logistics There is still almost a year to go before ACHEMA 2018 opens, nevertheless preparations are moving into high gear: more than 2,600 companies have already ordered a stand. By the time the halls open on 11 June 2018 the organisers expect the exhibitor figure to top the 3,800 mark, all set to present their products and technologies to some 170,000 visitors from all over the world. Suppliers will show the latest innovations in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries in 11 exhibition groups: from laboratory equipment to pumps, compressors and other components through to complete packaging lines. The accompanying congress with around 800 lectures will provide complementary information on future trends, backed up with applications and issues from industry. Three trends demand the special attention of stakeholders in the global process industries: Biotech for Chemistry underscores the increasing integration of chemical and biotechnological processes. It is no longer a question of “either-or”, but of the optimum combination of these two worlds, from strain development through to product – with all the challenges this entails for processes and processing methods. At the same time the demands made on Flexible Production are soaring – whether it be different regional requirements, varying energy and raw materials supplies, shorter product cycles or customised production: flexibility is the key to success on the dynamic global markets. The solutions include modular plants, robust processes and intelligent components which, thanks to digitalisation, communicate with each other and integrate many tasks into the plant from process adjustment to predictive maintenance.

102

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

These developments are inconceivable without the integration of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Logistics which is progressively making a transition from service provider to systems partner. Data exchange across the whole supply chain, track and trace systems even for the smallest loads, while still remaining committed to safe and punctual transport of raw materials and products – all these factors make for the success of a globalised sector. In the exhibition, congress, and the applicationoriented PRAXISforums which bring together suppliers and customers in close proximity to the individual exhibition groups, and also in a variety of accompanying events and publications, these topics will be just as intensively explored and discussed as all the other topical developments that impact the process industry today and tomorrow. The linkage of exhibition and high-quality congress makes ACHEMA the distinctive world forum of the process industries. Contributions to the congress can be submitted until 22 September 2017. More information on participating in ACHEMA 2018 is available at www.achema.de
