As iconic Australian brand Arnott’s has grown over the years and product lines have become increasingly complex, it became clear there was a need to upgrade to a next generation of smart palletising.

The 25-year-old Motoman palletiser that Arnott’s had installed in its NSW factory in Huntingwood in 1996 had well outperformed its lifespan, having produced several million pallets. Arnott’s required an integrated palletising solution that would work within existing space constraints and provide the flexibility to handle a large range of shelf-ready cartons at high speeds. It needed to be easily programmable, to support rapid product configuration

and changeover. Pallets would need to be checked, wrapped and SSCC labelled, and all of this was to be achieved with

Covid-19 came as quite a shock to many businesses in the manufacturing sector, but perhaps more surprising was that the pandemic would ultimately have a silver lining for the majority of manufacturers, associated industries and even Industry Update Media. As the owner of Industry Update Media, I recall that 2020 was the best start to a year since 2015, and everyone, it seemed, was looking forward to reaping the benefits of the incredible and prolonged Australian, strong-as-steel economy! But a new reality was speeding towards us and, as early as the second week of February 2020, I became concerned that the little-known virus that was spreading around the globe was going to change life as we knew it. It did! Still, in Australia at that time, the worry, concern and fear had not yet surfaced

as Covid-19 was only known as a minor coronavirus. Astonishingly, however, the front cover headline of the February/March 2020 edition that I and Nicole Charles, IU office manager/PA, chose was, “Is it time to bring more manufacturing back to Australia?” It was, arguably, the best headline that I had ever picked, but within four weeks the world changed forever as “lockdown”, “iso” and “coronavirus” became the vernacular not of some - but of all humankind! Remarkably, Covid-19 has given the Australian manufacturing industry a new lease of life. At Industry Update we look forward to taking this journey with you! A bumper edition to celebrate economic upswing Welcome to our bumper 72-page edition of Industry Update, coming to you on the back of a resurgence in economic activity in Australia, manufacturing included. For example, The Ai Group’s Performance of Manufacturing Index for May recorded an eighth consecutive month of recovery, the highest monthly result since March 2018 and the fourth highest since the peak body commenced its index in 1992 (read more on page 11). The increase in advertising and our growing list of upcoming events, see page 70, also bear testament to rising business confidence. Of course, we are not yet through the woods as far as the pandemic is concerned but staying positive is half the battle. We hope that you will come away feeling buoyed after paging though the many positive stories in our June/July magazine.

We also hope you’ll notice a strong focus on the people behind many of our success stories. For example, the coffee roasting business story that grew from the shared vision of two young entrepreneurs operating from a Gladesville garage 22 years ago (page 10); the packaging equipment company started 14 years ago by an entrepreneur with three generations of packaging machinery in his blood (page 12); the Australian family-owned and operated boutique producer of hand-crafted dips (page 22); an industrial designer who believes in sharing information with everyone, even competitors, for the common good (page 29); and a CEO who has worked in her business for 30 years, supplying safety devices to the crane and manufacturing industry. She is now preparing to hand over the reins to the next generation (page 30).

Budget initiatives will drive industry growth It has only been a few months since I commenced as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, but a lot has happened in that time. The Morrison Government invested more than $475 million in the May Budget for initiatives that will drive industry growth and scientific development, building on our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy (MMS) announced in the previous Budget. Manufacturing industries in Australia have shown themselves to be incredibly resilient and adaptable in meeting the challenges of Covid-19. With the support of the government, employment in the manufacturing sector is almost at pre-Covid levels and is on the rise. The Ai Group’s Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index shows that manufacturing is now a flourishing sector. That is an impressive performance after severe disruptions. Funding from the May Budget includes $387 million towards building the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be at the cutting-edge of scientific discovery.

The SKA has been called the world’s largest radio telescope, but it actually will consist of two telescopes – one in South Africa, and one in the Murchison region of Western Australia. I am very pleased that this investment in my home state will create hundreds of jobs. In fact, expressions of interest have

increase Australia’s workforce skills in cyber security and emerging technologies, including funding for at least 234 scholarships that support emerging technologies areas, such as those identified through the Modern Manufacturing Strategy. • Advancing Australia’s manufacturing capacity by developing onshore mRNA vaccine capability, through continued negotiations and an approach to the Australian market. Prior to the Budget, funding was opened for all six of our National Manufacturing Priorities under the Modern Manufacturing Strategy – Defence, Space, Recycling and Clean Energy, Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing, Food and Beverage, and Medical Products. This funding will help manufacturers to scale-up production, commercialise their products and operations, and integrate into domestic and global supply chains. The government will also accelerate the creation of a $1 billion Sovereign Guided Weapons Enterprise, boosting skilled jobs and helping secure Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. The Enterprise will support missile and guided weapons manufacturing in Australia for use across the Australian Defence Force. This strong commitment to manufacturing will continue. As Minister I will work with industry stakeholders to increase the strength and vibrancy of the sector, keeping it at the heart of our economic recovery, as we work to create more well-paid jobs for Australians. Industry Growth Centres could be even more effective with increased funding With much flourish, the Coalition announced its plan for a $1.5bn Modern Manufacturing Strategy (MMS), but red flags are already emerging around the future integrity of the program. Despite the fanfare, MMS has not recorded the creation of a single job, despite Scott Morrison promising to create 80,000 direct jobs in manufacturing. Senate Estimates hearings at the beginning of June have triggered concerns within the Opposition that existing successful industry initiatives like the Industry Growth Centres (IGCs) may be hollowed out and siphoned off to pay for the MMS – paving the way for another Coalition electioneering slush fund. Prior to Senate Estimates I had been hearing anxious whispers that the government was getting ready to pull funding for IGCs. IGCs have a proven track record around the world and have had a positive impact here. It was recently

reported that the Federal Government is refusing to release a report into the IGCs that says as much.

Given the challenges monopolising the attention of the current Industry Minister, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is yet to see it too. But the reports I’ve seen suggest that IGCs are proving effective and could be more impactful with increased government funding.

A fundamental aspect of growth centres succeeding is because they dispense grants based on their deep knowledge of the sectors in which they operate and provide valuable support to businesses. This seems to be a much more productive pathway for future industry support as opposed to the establishment of a grants program where a government minister makes a final say about funding support, regardless of departmental advice. This politically venal model has generated all the worst headlines in other areas: sports rorts, road rorts and regional funding rorts. We cannot have industry funding subjected to the same treatment. For the sake of our economy and future jobs, we need an industry policy and funding model we can genuinely believe in.

CASE STUDY – ST GEORGE BANK By Barry O’Hagan Simple, high-quality coffee is revered in Italy. So when an Australian of Italian heritage, who has been involved in the coffee business most of his life and visits Italy regularly, tells you that Australian roasted coffee is the world’s best, you sit up and take notice. And when he goes on to tell you that his business will soon launch one of the country’s first Australian grown and roasted coffees, then you really take notice. The man we are talking about is Ross Schinella, co-founder of the Schibello Coffee Group. He and business partner Tony Sorbello have come a long way since their business venture’s humble beginnings in a Gladesville garage in 1999. At the time, there were just 22 coffee roasters in Australia, says Ross. By providing old-fashioned service and building relationships, Schibello Coffee Group has grown to now have national and international presence. Schibello’s latest goal is to launch its own fully fledged Australian-made product in a market shared by nearly 1,100 roasters. This new blend will be grown in Australia, harvested by Australians, roasted on Schibello’s premises in Sydney and Brisbane, and sold in Australian-made packaging. It may even be bundled with an Australian-made coffee machine. Why is this so significant? The majority of the Australian coffee market imports raw coffee from countries such as Brazil, India and Colombia to then roast here, as locally grown coffee is rare and also far more expensive. However, Australiangrown coffee is a growing space and Schibello wants to bring visibility and support to local farmers through this new project, as well as explore the unique flavours of our local crop. “In Australia, we’ve got amazing coffee. Not just great coffee,” Ross told Industry Update. “Worldwide, we are the leaders in coffee. I can tell you, I’ve travelled all around the world and been to every single corner that has coffee, and nobody does coffee like Australia. It’s because we’re dedicated to bringing to life amazing experiences, and we’re educating the rest of the world,” said Ross. In addition to its Sydney and Brisbane roasteries, Schibello is also looking at expanding its facilities to Melbourne. It also has roasting rooms in Singapore, and exports to Fiji. “Fiji is our biggest-growing market at the moment. We’re lucky to have some great partners there, and we are probably among the top two brands in Fiji. We also sell coffee in the US; it’s a lengthy process but we’ll slowly educate them on quality and better experiences,” said Ross. Ross and Tony took their business to another level in 2014 when they acquired the boutique brands Arte Coffee Roasters and Cleanskin Coffee Co. Ross says the latter is not for everyone but is featured in a selection of specialty coffee outlets, where the focus is to create unique coffee experiences. Arte Coffee is targeted at the conscious consumer market, with a portion of all sales donated to the International Women in Coffee Association. Like good coffee, there’s more to Schibello than meets the eye. Its offering to café partners includes barista training,

equipment and merchandise support, business advisory and even design consulting. What are Schibello’s biggest challenges? Ross says that the closing of Australia’s international borders has created a shortage of hospitality workers and skilled labour from overseas. “There are so many businesses out there chasing chefs, baristas and floor staff. Operators are going back on the tools because they have been forced to. They can’t work on their business while working in the business.” Ross is the first to admit that the

business could not have grown to where it’s at today were it not for a helping hand along the way from St.George Bank. He partnered with the bank from day one, back in 1999. While the loans have grown since then, so too has the relationship. “That’s the nice thing about St.George. They’ve always had key personnel who are accessible and that’s important. Sometimes you have to make calls and decisions and you don’t need the red tape. The current team at Parramatta are awesome,” said Ross. “Industry people are also key in this relationship. The best thing St.George

Bank did was introduce the industry division, because they have people in there who actually know their stuff. They’re always helpful and always ready to lend a hand. “We’ve probably stayed so tight because they get us. Guys like Matt (Kelly, Head of Manufacturing and Wholesale) and Pete (Crabtree, Relationship Director) have always been readily available to give us the best advice. The industry experience is important because they obviously know trends. ”If anyone asks me who are the best out there, I always say St.George.” St.George Bank’s services to Schibello don’t stop at loans either. The bank has been able to help the roaster with advice on currencies and provide access to experts outside the industry on topics such as assets, insurance and superannuation. Matt, who has known Ross nearly as long as Schibello has been in business, said: “Our relationship has grown over a number of years. We’re proud to have been able to assist them in their acquisitions and growth strategy to help them achieve their goals. Manufacturing expands for 8th consecutive month The Australian Industry Group Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (Australian PMI) edged 0.1 points higher to 61.8 in May, indicating an eighth consecutive month of recovery following the severe disruptions of Covid-19 in Q2 of 2020 (readings above 50 points indicate expansion in activity, with higher results indicating a faster rate of expansion). The May result represents the index's highest monthly result since March 2018 and the fourth highest since the Australian PMI commenced in 1992. Ai Group Chief Executive Innes Willox said: "Australia's manufacturing sector maintained its rapid pace of expansion in May, fuelled by strong demand from the construction sector, a pick-up in business investment and healthy demand from households. “Each of the six diverse manufacturing groups expanded at a more rapid rate in the month, led by the machinery & equipment; building products; and chemicals sectors.

“Manufacturing production and employment accelerated and, while the pace of expansion eased from April's record high, sales also continued to rise. “Manufacturers experienced further pressure on input costs and with wages also rising more rapidly, they are seeking to recover some of these extra costs from customers. With capacity utilisation running at high levels and new orders continuing to grow, manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to fill positions. While the new Victorian lockdown will dampen enthusiasm somewhat, these conditions are likely to be setting the stage for a lift in investment by manufacturers," Mr Willox said.

Australian PMI key findings

• All six manufacturing sectors in the Australian PMI expanded in May and at a faster pace than in April (see table below). The strongest results were in the sectors that directly supply the construction sector, including building

materials (up 3.8 points to 66.4), machinery & equipment (up 0.2 points to 64.7) and chemicals (up 2.1 points to 65.7). • Six of the seven activity indices in the Australian PMI expanded in May (with only the exports index indicating a contraction (down 9.9 points to 48.9). Production (up 0.9 points to 64.5), employment (up 3.3 points to 61.3) and new orders (up 1.5 points to 64.9) accelerated into very strong expansion. • The input prices index rose further in May (up 8.0 points to 82.1), reaching its highest level since June 2008. Input prices for manufacturers are surging for various raw materials, due to high global commodity prices for metals, oil and other key inputs. Manufacturers’ selling prices increased again in May (up 5.4 points to 58.3), suggesting that more manufacturers are passing on some of these higher input costs to their customers. • The average wages index rose again in

Packserv set to unpack new products In response to customer demand, Packserv, Australia’s leading packaging machinery and technical services provider, has invested heavily in manufacturing infrastructure to drastically cut customers’ waiting times for new machinery. Government grant boosts productivity at integrated co-packing business A $325,000 government grant has helped regional Victoria’s largest co-packing business increase its productivity through the introduction of an innovative product line and new automated equipment. The grant, from the Agriculture Workforce Plan, has also enabled the Australian Disability Enterpriseregistered business to train 142 new and existing workers to operate the new equipment. Merriwa Industries in Wangaratta is reputed to be one of Australia’s largest integrated employers, which includes people with disability. It has a team of more than 300 people, including more than 100 supported workers. Merriwa operates commercial businesses in packaging and the timber and garden nursery sectors, along with delivering child, youth and family support services. The Agriculture Workforce Plan is helping Victorians, including those who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, to find paid work while helping to ensure the state›s vital agriculture sector has the workforce it needs. Employees are supported to develop transferrable skills and receive training to increase their future

employment prospects, while also receiving ongoing personal development training. Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas says Merriwa Industries is a major employer in Wangaratta and the north east, and is successfully adapting its operations to take on new workers. She recently met with recruits to see how new funding was benefiting the business and workers. “We are backing businesses like Merriwa Industries because they create jobs for regional Victorians, including for people that may otherwise face barriers to employment. It’s a win for individuals, the community and the local economy,” she said. Merriwa Industries Chief Executive Officer Bart Crawley says the AWP funding has had a significant impact on Merriwa Industries’ ability to inform, prepare, support and train staff to deal with the significant challenges Covid created. Treotham’s triflex TRX energy supply system revolutionises robot motion The newly developed four-dimensional triflex TRX energy chain from igus ensures that moving cables on industrial robots can be guided safely, easily and compactly.

TRX system was developed based on the triflex R energy chain. This is a fourdimensional energy chain in which the retraction system is already integrated.

The new design replaces classic robot hose packages and retraction systems. A special feature is the 40% retraction length enabled by a unique telescopic mechanism inside the chain. This allows users to save space not only on the third axis of their robot, but also save up to 83% weight and reduce costs.

"With TRX, we created a spacesaving chain that can be fixed directly and compactly on the third axis. The energy supply twists into itself, lengthens and shortens spirally as in a telescopic pull-out, by up to 40%," says Mr Ottersbach.

The three-dimensional triflex R igus energy chains from Treotham are widely used in the industry for fail-safe guidance of cables and hoses on robots. Retraction systems have so far been used on the third axis to ensure that no loops are created during the movement of the energy chain system which could hinder the robot.

For this purpose, igus relies on a screw connector system in the unique mechanism as well as on an integrated reset band. The band brings the chain links back to their starting point time and again, and thereby the retraction force can be adjusted. The cables are placed in the chain in the form of a spiral and are guided safely in the movement with the help of the chain.

"However, the axes on the robots offer less and less space, so a new solution was needed," says Jörg Ottersbach, head of the e-chains business unit at igus GmbH.

In addition, the cables and hoses are fastened in place in the middle of the TRX so that they do not leave their position when the chain is pulled.

The use of windows-based smart MAX AGVs provides increased flexibility, while achieving required productivity rates. Employing proprietary Motoman MotoLogix software, robots can be completely programmed and controlled via the host AB-PLC. This means all unique product programs can be simply changed in an instant, on the fly. The result is a modular palletiser system that is intelligent, versatile, flexible, and intuitive. Robotic Automation calls it MOTOPAL. Shane West, Arnott’s Group Regional Project Manager, was the primary client point of contact throughout the project. He said that after 25 years, the existing palletising system (at Huntingwood) faced future obsolescence and was the catalyst to go to market for a new solution. “We went out to a few suppliers but found others provided a more conventional solution, with product conveyors and the like, similar to what we already had and not lending itself as well to the available floorspace,” said Shane. “Robotic Automation’s solution was more innovative; it was a cleaner and more modern solution that presented an efficient use of space,” he said. “It offered ease of operation, requiring less operator movement across floors and stairs – and had fewer ‘moving parts’ meaning less likelihood of reliability issues.” Project commencement was pending

Work from home and disruption have fast-tracked cloud tech

A recent Deloitte report cited the rise of automation in the manufacturing sector. It states that in 2018 humans carried out 71 percent of tasks, but this is forecast to drop to 58 percent by 2022. The report also found that although 75 million jobs will be eliminated, 133 million new jobs will be created. So, where does cloud robotics come into play and how will it serve Australia and New Zealand? “Simply put, cloud robotics is an emerging field which makes use of cloud-based technologies such as cloud computing, cloud storage and other

Connectivity with 5G a big plus for automated factory manufacturing

Precise connectivity is now an essential in the factory process and packaging facilities which use robotic drive systems that transfer workpieces from one process to the next.

So for accurate control of measurement systems, sensor/grippers on the last axis and end-of-arm tools, which is part and parcel of synchronisation between robots, a stable and reliable response time without high latency is important. Enter wireless and the prospects for use of 5G technology to drive robotic systems. “These days the end-of-arm tool is connected using cable-based data communication such as digital I/O, I/O link or Industrial Ethernet (PROFINET). However, a combination of wired and wireless communication can be useful under certain circumstances,” says LAPP Australia General Manager, Mr Simon Pullinger. The LAPP family-owned company – which has established a full Branch in

Australia to service manufacturing major industries, including food and beverage materials handling, processing, packaging and despatch – says ensuring optimum connectivity can ideally involve a combination of wired and wireless communication. “The choice of wired and wireless depends very much on the application. Why wireless?

1. The wear on the data network cables in their composite dress packs is high, with high dynamics and due to ever-increasing work spaces required for the robots. This increases the risk of the systems failing. 2. Small batch sizes and frequent conversion require flexible communication concepts that enable the components to communicate with one

another in almost real time. 3. The elimination of data cables in the dress pack reduces the weight and allows the robot to move more dynamically.

What 5G has to do •

The control signals must reach end of arm tools such as a gripper in real time. It does not have to be at rest – remote IO is wirelessly connected to the controller. The required latency of 4-8ms must be complied with. This will be feasible using 5G in the future. Today’s WLAN systems are limited to 10ms.

Localisation of the gripper to up to +/0.5 mm is not yet possible with 5G, says Mr Pullinger.

QUESTION: How can automation be used in periods of unexpectedly high demand? (for example, the e-grocery industry during the pandemic) ANSWER: When Covid-19 was at its worst in Australia (around MarchApril 2020), grocery store shelves were stripped bare, and it looked like we didn’t have enough product to keep up with increased demand. However, this was deceptive, because at any given time, roughly three months’ worth of goods exist within the supply chain – the challenge is getting it into and out of distribution centres, and into stores. This is where high density, high throughput Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) could be a major help in meeting future demand spikes. These systems can store more pallets in less space, and retrieve them more efficiently, compared with manual or alternative technologies. The faster goods can be retrieved and sent to store, the faster shelves can be restocked to meet higher demands. Automated systems are typically more compact, delivering major savings that can be reinvested in areas that truly make a difference to business, such as service to its existing markets and research and development of new markets. A more agile, more intelligent business can move sooner to take advantage of emerging favourable trends, and more swiftly to avoid impending supply gaps, traps and flaws in evolving plans. Finally, warehouse automation is becoming increasingly modular and flexible in design, functionality and

Liftco celebrates 30 years in business

Peristaltic pump puts paid to problems with sludge transfer

Teys Australia, one of the largest meat processors and exporters in Australia, was looking for a dependable solution for its DAF tank sludge and scum transfer at its plant in Beenleigh, Queensland. The company had used submersible pumps and double diaphragm pumps in the past, but with limited success. A Hydro Innovations pump specialist recommended the use of a Ragazzini peristaltic (hose) pump for the application. Ragazzini hose pumps are positive displacement pumps using a set of rollers to compress an elastomeric tube that pushes the fluid contained within it. Teys needed to transfer up to 10 cubic metres an hour of the sludge, so Hydro Innovations recommended the Ragazzini MS3 peristaltic pump with fully cast casing, cast iron rotor and castiron rollers.

The abattoir has been so happy with the installation, it has since rolled this new technology out to other branches around the country.

The pump needed only to run at the slow speed of 26 rpm to meet the duty, so the pump is expected to have a very long service life. It is also fitted as standard with a leak detector that instantly detects a damaged hose. The leak detector stops the pump and sends a warning signal. Pumps are mounted on stainless steel base

frames and are supplied with 316SS ports. The pump was duly ordered and installed. An operator at the plant commented that “it was easy to install and works very well, with little maintenance. A great feature is not having to fill the roller section with glycol, and the quiet operation of the pump,” he said.

Ragazzini pumps are available in sizes ranging from 10mm ports up to 150mm, with flows from 0.2 litres per hour up to 180 cubic metres per hour, with pressures to 15 bar. Various pump hose materials allow pumps to move abrasive fluids, corrosive fluids, fats, oils, along with FDA approved hoses for foods and pharmaceutical products.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY Canberra offers to help industry manufacture mRNA vaccines The Australian Government is offering to partner with industry so that the country has the opportunity to produce mRNA vaccines and, potentially, other therapeutic products, using this technology. In a joint announcement with Minister for Health Greg Hunt, newly appointed Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter said the Government was inviting key commercial providers and potential providers to demonstrate their future capability and explain what government involvement, assistance or support could make that capacity a reality. “We know that mRNA is an extremely promising branch of medical science and we know from work already undertaken that Australian businesses and researchers are developing mRNA capacity,” Minister Porter said. “However our market analysis also shows there are gaps and challenges to scale-up, which mean it’s not currently possible to commercially manufacture mRNA treatments locally.” He said the Government was taking a two-pronged approach to establishing this capability. “We are continuing negotiations with existing manufacturers while also

approaching the market for others that can potentially provide viable solutions. “This partnership approach will ultimately help us secure the best mRNA capability for Australians while delivering economic benefits, improving health outcomes for Australians and creating high paying jobs for the future.” He said that while mRNA vaccines were already a key pillar of the Government’s vaccine strategy, mRNA technology had the potential to treat many other diseases including cancer, the flu, and cardiovascular disease. “This approach to market builds on work already undertaken to understand Australia’s vaccine manufacturing capability, including a manufacturing audit undertaken last year and a business case. “Both these will provide a strong evidence base on which to assess proposals as we work to build capability here at home.”

Three things manufacturers have learned from a year of working remotely There has been extensive discussion of how office workers have adapted to the challenge of working from home (WFH), but the manufacturing sector has also embraced an increase in remote working, whether by design or necessity. Here, John Young, APAC sales director at automation parts supplier EU Automation, identifies the three major things the manufacturing sector has learned from a year of WFH. Having been forced to work remotely due to Covid-19 restrictions, many employees and companies are acknowledging that things will likely never return to the pre-pandemic status quo. In countries and sectors that have embraced high levels of automation, businesses can save money and employees can enjoy greater flexibility through hybrid models that mix working on site with more frequent and flexible remote working. However, the debate so far has focused mostly on office working. Here’s three key things manufacturers in the APAC region have learned from a year of working remotely.

Accelerating automation?

For office jobs, there is little doubt that a year of remote working has accelerated the uptake of digital technologies and automation. According to Teo Lay Lim, South Asia Market unit lead for Accenture, the pandemic has effectively consolidated 10 years of digital transformation efforts into a mere six months.

Remote condition monitoring

The possibility of remote working varies greatly in the manufacturing sector. One interesting area of development that has been given a fillip in the past year is technology that enables remote condition monitoring. Remote condition monitoring is the ability to view the performance, status and behaviour of a machine from a distance in real time. This is achieved with a combination of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and cloud computing that allows an on-site machine to be tracked by maintenance engineers wherever they are.

In manufacturing, the picture is less clear, but the early evidence suggests more manufacturers turning to automation. At the very least, the crisis has shone a spotlight on automation technologies and the benefits they can offer. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are one of many examples of technologies that have enjoyed a period of growth throughout the pandemic and look set to enjoy a strong uptake in many sectors, particularly food and beverage.

Cyber gaps exposed

Although digital transformations have allowed greater levels of remote working, they have also exposed cyber vulnerabilities. The manufacturing sector

is no different to others in this regard, but the stakes could potentially be greater. Just imagine the consequences of an industrial robot being hacked. One problem is employees using vulnerable devices when working remotely. A recent study from LogMeIn, found that globally 31% of people are using ‘vulnerable devices’ when working remotely and for the APAC region specifically, the figure was 45%. In another study from AT&T, which surveyed 500 IT decisionmakers in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, almost half the respondents said they anticipated the volume of cyber attacks to increase.

Having automated sensors removes some of the need for human intervention. The data gathered via these sensors can be accessed remotely via cloud services and data visualization tools allow engineers to identify and diagnose a fault while working from home. Using these solutions, maintenance engineers can order components from parts suppliers such as EU Automation. Many companies have learned a lot from WFH, and manufacturers are no exception. The challenge has encouraged the uptake of those technological solutions that reduce the need for human workers on site. However, manufacturers are also discovering that WFH is opening up greater cyber vulnerabilities and necessitating a more effective strategy to respond to this threat.

Planning materials handling ahead saves time and money “You’d be surprised how often I come to a plant to quote a job and, after being shown the brand new state-of-the-art multi-million-dollar facility with the latest and greatest machinery, am told that no one stopped to consider how items were going to be loaded into this great machinery,” says Tate McFarlane, Engineering Director at Bomac Engineering. “No one at the planning stage looked over the design of the facility and said ‘how are we going to get our items from A to B?’ Or they assumed that they would simply use a forklift or similar, only to realise the space being shared by people on foot and the vehicle will cause serious risk for injuries or accidents.”

McFarlane reckons that one of the great things about Bomac’s Altrac rail system is that in most cases he can design a system that works within the context of what’s already there. But that doesn’t always result in the most efficient workflow possible once it’s all up and running, especially when there is not

Money and time can also be saved on installation if the crane is being put into an empty plant instead of having to work around bulky machinery or storage racks. Once the crane is up, it is completely out of the way of the on-ground equipment so no further time delay or financial cost would be incurred by installing crane first, machinery second. “I urge anyone planning out a manufacturing, maintenance or even storage facility to first consider materials handling before looking at the more ‘exciting’ technology you’ll be implementing,” says McFarlane. “It may be that nothing is needed or you might

be set up in a way that a forklift really is the best solution. LAPP’s EPIC connectors up with the stars in new screen role

Self-illuminating balloons have long been used by filmmakers for overhead lighting in night scenes. Unsurprisingly the critical criterion for these balloons is being low in weight. That’s where LAPP EPIC connectors are playing a starring role. The EPIC connectors have earned the trust of blberlin, a leading German supplier of the illuminating balloons, for their secure lightweight connection. The blberlin example proves the utility of LAPP EPIC connectors when “every gram counts”, said LAPP Australia General Manager Mr Simon Pullinger. “This impressive application shows the versatility of LAPP’s product range,” Mr Pullinger said. “EPIC’s lightweight design has a significant advantage. “The lightweight connectors are ideal for industrial applications and challenges where weight matters. LAPP EPIC power cable connectors are regularly used in plant engineering applications, servo drives and servo assemblies, but are broadly applicable to any application requiring a high quality, lightweight and compact solution.” Founder of blberlin, Fabian Friedrich, launched the company in 2001, after seeing the self-illuminating balloons used in France. “We needed the smallest possible lightweight connector that allows high current loads and can fly as part of the balloon,” Mr Friedrich said.

“My electrician was familiar with LAPP. The advice from the local application engineer at LAPP was uncomplicated and we quickly found what we were looking for,” he said. “The EPIC Power LS1 industrial connector was chosen, and it is exceptionally robust against impacts and environmental influences.” Since then, Mr Friedrich has remained a loyal fan of LAPP's connection solutions. “The quality of the products and the service are great.” The balloons are made with a heliumtight and translucent special coating. Within each balloon is an electrical unit containing the illuminant. Everything is hermitically sealed with a plastic plate at base. This is where the EPIC Power LS1 enters stage. The ÖLFLEX ROBUST 210 power and control cables, which transmit 220 volts or even high-voltage power at 380 volts, play a critical supporting role to ensure a reliable downwards connection. The balloons are tailored to the specific requirements of the set. Sometimes the lighting balloons have to rise up to 80 metres. Precise calculations are essential. “For us, every gram counts,” Mr Friedrich said.

Today blberlin has about 70 versions of the balloon and about the same number of different control units, with cables and connectors that can be installed in the balloons virtually “plug and play”. Many different potential combinations are available, so a solution suited to the specific requirement is usually ready to hand. Mr Friedrich considers a location at Lake Turkana in Kenya to be the site of his most interesting work. The movie, which was made a few years ago, depicts child soldiers and took about two and a half months to film. The filming required a balloon to float 80 metres above the edge of the lake. The company custom designed a helium balloon with a diameter of 5.5 metres and an output of 42,000 watts. “We developed our own prototype for the job and shipped it to Nairobi. We only had time to test it once, but thankfully everything worked,” Mr Friedrich said. Mr Friedrich only rarely encounters

film stars. When he does, it’s unintentional. On the Valkyrie film set in Berlin, he happened to stand next to Tom Cruise – but had no idea who it was. “My wife told me about it later on,” Mr Friedrich said with a smile. Although business contracted to almost nothing early in the pandemic, it rebounded strongly and is now back at full steam. The company has big plans. “In five years, we want to be the market leader for film balloons in Germany,” Mr Friedrich said. One of the exciting projects at the company is the development of LED balloons, which require connectors that are even more compact. And blberlin will once again be looking to LAPP.

Precision Jekran Waterjet gives Spring Ridge Engineering the edge Liverpool Plains on the north-western slopes of New South Wales is a highly productive agricultural area. There are broad acre crops such as wheat, corn and sorghum, while dry-land and irrigated cotton crops thrive in the rich soil. Sheep graze in the hills surrounding Spring Ridge and the Caroona and Killara cattle feedlots are significant contributors to the local economy. Machinery plays a major part in cultivation, seeding, weed control and harvesting. Critical tasks need to be performed often in narrow time windows and no farmer can afford to have a machine that is not being productive or is creating costly downtime. "In recent years growers have adopted new machines with advanced technology,” said Andrew Holland of Spring Ridge Engineering. His father, Chris, started the business around 40 years ago, originally manufacturing and supplying planting machines. “The transition to more automation has meant that Spring Ridge Engineering has moved from manufacturing machines to supplying parts and accessories, and fabrication of specialised components and engineering services to produce replacement parts and make repairs,” said Andrew. "Harvest time is extremely busy and no one can afford to wait longer than necessary to get a machine back in operation. The need for specialised fabricated parts has kept Spring Ridge Engineering very busy. The business needed a solution to quickly manufacture components, specialised implements and to reproduce high precision parts. "When it comes to cutting materials, a plasma cutter or oxyacetylene may be fast, but it is difficult to get the fine quality finish straight off the machine that is

needed for many precision components." Andrew said. "We found the right solution in a Jekran X-MW Series Waterjet which we installed in our factory towards the end of last year. Having the Jekran Waterjet gives us the flexibility we need to produce high precision components.” This versatile machine is capable of cutting virtually any material, including steel up to 100 millimetres thick. The fine finish on machined parts means the part can be taken right off the cutting table without any secondary finishing. While this cutting method may not be the fastest, it certainly gives the best precision. "The Jekran Waterjet is capable of delivering excellent results even for the most challenging jobs. The cold process means there is no molten-edge distortion. When we need to fabricate or replicate a critical part, it is now just a matter copying an existing component or creating a new piece by drawing up the task in a SolidWorks program and feed this into the machine’s controller,” said Andrew. “The Jekran Waterjet provides the critical link between our long experience, our resourcefulness and our engineering know-how to give us the edge we need. "This cutter has enabled us to be creative in helping us deliver the fast turnaround and high-quality solutions that our customers demand. The machine is easy to program and can be operated by an apprentice so our technical support team can spend more time in the field to help producers with their machinery issues. “The benefit to our business is a good quality job that can be charged out at a rate that will deliver us an acceptable profit margin and in a time frame that makes the customer happy,” concluded Andrew.

Based in Shepparton, Victoria, Jmar Engineering was founded by Mark and Janice Hooper and recently celebrated 25 years in business. Its ongoing success is based on a commitment to providing outstanding customer service, staying abreast of local trends, and ongoing diversification. Using precision turning and milling equipment, Jmar specialises in component manufacturing, repairs and maintenance across a broad range of industries. Their work typically includes a considerable amount of ‘reverse engineering’; fabricating components and parts that customers may have previously bought from overseas suppliers who often are now defunct or uncontactable due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to component manufacturing, the company has been a supplier to the agricultural industry for almost a quarter of a century, with a unique product called the Christopher Dairy Bails; a retrofit product suitable for herringbone dairies that allows the farmer to feed in the bail at milking time. Jmar has also invested heavily in 3D modelling, which has been a great sales tool as the company can now provide customers with an accurate representation of the concept design prior to actual full-scale production. Nearly all of Jmar’s business comes from around the Goulburn Valley area, within a 50km radius of Shepparton. Expanding its sheetmetal and cutting capabilities with a view to obtaining more

says Hooper. “We ended up becoming a contract cutter and it was this that prompted us to invest in an additional Yawei fibre laser. We were struggling to keep up with the work and we couldn’t afford to let our customers down; this second machine ensured we could always offer consistency of supply and maintain our lead times.” With its 4kW capacity, a Precitec auto-focus cutting head and a Siemens CNC controller, the Yawei HLF has also provided Jmar with a huge increase cutting speed, material capacity and quality of cut. This improvement in laser cut parts feeding into the company’s seven-axis Yawei press brake means the quality of the finished product is far superior, particularly with stainless steel.

“When it comes to comparing the two machines, the new Yawei 4kW HLF is so much better,” adds Hooper. “It really is chalk and cheese.” The Yawei’s additional capacity and high-quality cut has allowed the company to fabricate a more diverse range of sheetmetal products that simply wasn’t possible before. One of these is a customdesigned, all stainless-steel evaporative air conditioner that is being manufactured for a local commercial kitchen builder. “We’re seeing work that we would never have seen before and quoting on jobs that we have previously not been able to quote on,” Hooper adds. “The new Yawei fibre laser is really transforming and expanding our business. “Like our previous dealings with Applied, the service was just outstanding with the purchase of the Yawei. Every

Quasar tackles quandary of satellite management Newly launched space startup Quasar Satellite Technologies is set to revolutionise space communications, using radio telescope technology developed by the CSIRO.

Manufacturing skills qualifications get biggest update in decade

Skills qualifications in manufacturing trades have undergone their biggest update in a decade, with the intention of developing a more productive workforce and one which has the skills required by today’s jobs. Developed by the Manufacturing and Engineering Industry Reference Committee, supported by skills service organisation IBSA Manufacturing, the updates come at a time of critical skills shortages around the country. They highlight the importance of having industry-relevant training packages and recognised qualifications. Eighteen updated qualifications are now available, 13 specifically designed for apprenticeships. This is the first in a series of updates to manufacturing engineering qualifications. The update has been a complex

process of analysis and consultation conducted by the committee. It included consultation with employers, employees, training providers and governments across the country to ensure that the qualifications and the skills they represent provide the most benefit to workers and their employers.

Kristian Stratton, newly elected chair of the committee, said: “The qualifications represent some of the critical trades that support Australian industry’s competitiveness and our sovereign capability. Their importance is underlined by the strong engagement shown by interested parties and all levels of governments over the course of several years.” He added: “This marks a big step in ensuring our trade apprentices will be better equipped with the skills they

BUSINESS & FINANCE Only 30% of manufacturing workers optimistic about future – well below national average of 80%

A survey has found that while four out of five of Australian workers feel optimistic about the next five years, only 30% of those in manufacturing feel the same way. It also found that 10% of Australian manufacturing workers reported losing their jobs last year.

The findings were based on a global survey of more than 32,000 workers by the ADP Research Institute in November and December last year. They were reported in The People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce View. The survey, which included 1,902 Australians from all industries, explored whether the effects of the pandemic affected employees’ attitudes towards the current world of work and what they expect and hope for in the workplace of the future. According to the report, three quarters of working Australians felt uncertainty over their job security during the pandemic and more than half were affected professionally by Covid. A quarter of all respondents were laid off (8%), furloughed (6%) or temporarily laid off (11%) by the same employer. In respect of manufacturing, the figures were •

Of those people who lost their jobs, 17% were in the leisure and hospitality industry, followed by IT/telecoms (11%) and manufacturing. Workers in transportation and warehousing were the most secure, with only 4% being laid off, followed by 5% working in construction and 6% in education and healthcare.

When asked about the affects of Covid-19 on their work in the next three years, more respondents said they expected it to have a positive impact in the areas of skill development, flexibility at work, the way they do their work and work-

life balance. Only in their ability to find a job or financial security, did they expect it to have a negative impact. Peter Hadley, President - APAC at ADP, commented: “This new data from ADP tells us that Australians really felt the pressures falling out from the Covid-19 pandemic. “Although many people have been hard hit professionally, there’s a sense that what has been a dark could have a silver lining in various ways when it comes to the world of work. Particularly in terms of accelerating the shift towards flexible working patterns, with two in five Australians saying they believe Covid-19 has had a positive impact here.”

He said that understandably, job or financial security was front of mind for many, and these concerns unfortunately reflected reality. “In a year when many businesses have had to shut temporarily or permanently, or significantly alter their operations, the effects of the disruption and uncertainty on the workforce have been profound,” said Mr Hadley. “The challenge now for employers and HR teams is to find ways to harness the positives while, as far as possible, alleviating the negatives to ensure that staff stay upbeat, motivated and empowered to do well moving forward.”

When it came to furlough, real estate workers were the hardest hit, with 13% in this industry saying they were “sent home” at some point last year. This was followed by 9% in IT/telecoms and 8% in hospitality and leisure. Hospitality and leisure workers were most impacted by temporary layoffs from their employers, with 19% affected, followed by 14% of construction workers and 12% of finance workers. Industries which feel most hopeful for the next five years in the workplace are IT/ telecoms, construction and finance, with 85%, 85% and 83% respectively saying they feel quite or very optimistic for the next five years in the workplace. Workers in the real estate, media and manufacturing industries were the most

Selling conversations, the key to the future by Justin Roff-Marsh Assuming that a business has a compelling product (or service), and the ability to execute flawlessly, then growth should be simple. All that business must do is out-communicate its competitors! Now, some communication can be automated. Advertising, online activities and the like. But once mass communication hits diminishing returns, direct outreach is often required. Salespeople, in other words. Once a business reaches that point, it will maximise growth by ensuring that its sales team participates in more selling conversations than its competitors’ teams do, when adjusted for market share. Note, what moves the needle here is selling conversations. Not salespeople. If a business wants to participate in more than its fair share of selling conversations, it has two choices. Hire more salespeople. Or, figure out how to get its existing sales team to perform more selling conversations. The latter is where the true potential

is. A typical salesperson spends only a tiny percentage (single digits) of their time engaged in selling conversations. The balance of their time is dedicated to customer service, administration, prospecting, project management, and the like. The key to get salespeople selling then, is to remove ALL responsibilities other than selling conversations. This requires upgrades to other organisational functions to take over these responsibilities from sales: customer service, marketing and engineering. The good news it turns out that customers want to communicate online and by phone to the maximum possible extent. Even where major deals are concerned, video conferences are almost always a better alternative than face-to-face visits. Of course, a few critical activities do still need to occur in the field: and that’s fine. This fundamental change in market dynamics requires that we make an ideological shift. The salesperson’s pragmatism won’t cut it. We need to embrace this change and recognise that,

today, sales is essentially an inside activity supported by discrete field activities on an as-needed basis. The good news is that this new, insideout approach to sales enables you to exploit economies of scale. Running a large field sales team is incredibly expensive (on a per-sellingconversation basis) relative to inside sales. An inside salesperson can have up to 30 meaningful selling conversations a day, where a field salesperson will work hard to average 4 meetings. Moreover, if you insist all sales interactions are held with a field salesperson, you are turning your back on selling conversations that you could have had but will not have if you insist that each prospect accepts a field visit. This is a critical point! It’s easy for sales managers to argue (as they do) that field meetings are more effective than phone conversations. However, this argument ignores the fact that, an insistence on field meetings results in salespeople having fewer selling conversations overall.

Wage rise stimulus arguments 'don’t add up' The peak national employer organisation representing business has rejected arguments that an increase in the minimum wage would have a similar positive effect on the economy as government stimulus payments. "This argument has substantial flaws and should not be accepted by the Expert Panel of the Fair Work Commission,” said Innes Willox, Group Chief Executive of the Ai Group. Mr Willox made these comments in his organisation’s second submission to this year’s Annual Wage Review, in which

he also argued for a delay in the operative date for any potential pay increase for employers in distressed sectors "Unlike stimulus payments, rises in minimum wages are paid by businesses and other employers and therefore involve a diversion of money from employers to those households which receive higher wages because of the minimum wage decision,” continued Mr Willox. "Because there is no additional money injected into the economy from an increase in minimum wages, there is no comparability between stimulus

payments made by governments and rises in minimum wages. One is stimulus; the other is a transfer within the economy. They are chalk and cheese. "We also propose a delayed operative date of 1 September 2021 for any wage increase in Group 2 awards. Last year, the minimum wage increase for these awards was delayed by four months. This year, we propose a delay of two months. This would facilitate a smooth transition to a 1 July operative date for any minimum wage increase next year, if there are no ongoing 'exceptional circumstances'.”

CSIRO leads top Aussie researchers in global partnership for low-emissions power The CSIRO is drawing together leading energy research organisations as part of a global research push to decarbonise electricity systems. The partnership brings CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) together with University of Melbourne, RMIT University and global consultancy Stratagen. The partnership will comprise the Australian contingent of the Global

Power System Transformation (G-PST) consortium, an international group of electricity system operators collaborating with leading researchers to speed up the shift to low-emission, cost-effective and reliable power systems. The assembly of these researchers and electricity system operators marks an important step towards permanently reducing emissions trajectories, while at

the same time improving the reliability, resilience and security of the grid. Dr John Ward, Research Director of CSIRO’s Energy Systems Research Program, said that the energy sector is “a central tenant of our net zero future”. He said that CSIRO and AEMO would draw on their experience in research-industry collaborations to lead the Australian contribution to the global effort. The energy sector “accounts for 54 per cent of Australia’s emissions,” said Dr Ward. He also said it “has the most mature range of low emission technology options for immediate and long-term opportunities”. “The cost of renewable energy is no longer our major challenge – integrating this energy efficiently into our electricity systems is what we need to solve.” The challenges facing industry are broad. They include solving technical issues, enhancing workforce training and developing new real-time operational tools. Collaboration is the best way to deal with these issues. CSIRO will act as the Australian research coordinator, as well as contribute directly to the research. The agency will ensure that Australian universities work hand-in-hand with industry, so that research is targeted to our country’s practical needs. Australian industry also stands to gain from the research contributions of other countries shared under G-PST, while our researchers will benefit from global exposure.

The CSIRO-led partnership will commence with a focus on developing Australian research plans in line with the G-PST research agenda. Target themes include quantifying technical requirements of future power systems for reliability and cost-efficiency, and investigating opportunities relating to Australia’s rooftop solar uptake – which is near the global frontier. Research plans will include a focus on inverter designs and power system stability tools, as well as the restoration of electricity systems with 100 per cent renewable energy. The collaboration is expected to expand to include more top Australian research organisations. Australia has critical advantages in developing power systems thanks its world-leading uptake of renewables, said AEMO Chief Operations Officer Michael Gatt. “Australia is at the forefront of the global energy switch to inverter-based renewable energy, allowing us to provide a unique perspective to develop the power systems of the future,” Mr Gatt said. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Australia’s leading science agency, CSIRO, and researchers to address emerging challenges as we transition to a low emissions future energy system."

The pandemic has grabbed the attention of the global population and provided authorities with the platform to communicate preventative health information to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, they have overlooked this opportunity to communicate knowledge and potentially save lives. In this crazy age of Covid-19, we are told to wash our hands, maintain social distancing, and wear masks. We are required to record our presence in public areas, shops, restaurants and at sporting events. These are important measures, but they do not provide any advice for healthier living. Unfortunately, the things being promoted are mask-wearing and selfisolation – far from pro-active solutions. Apart from vaccinations, which have proven difficult to roll out and track, no clear and certain plan for combating Covid-19 has been put forward by world experts. This is why, as a business owner of 44 years, I say I have never seen a greater marketing opportunity lost, than that surrounding Covid-19. When everybody is listening to what you have got to say, say something useful. The useful message to be heard by everybody is simple; live better. As business owner in the technology industry and distributor of Italian food

and beverages, I find that nothing has been achieved to improve the health and wellbeing habits of the general public. No authority – scientific, medical or government – has put forward the case of healthy living to minimise the possibility of being affected by Covid-19.

So cut it out. If you must drink, do not drink after dark. This impacts your circadian rhythm and prevents your body from recovering properly, leaving you open to infection. While drinking alcohol in the daytime is not ideal, it has less chance of affecting your sleep. People that do drink frequently are far more likely to get

pneumonia or respiratory syndromes, as well as cancers and liver diseases.

Eat a Mediterranean diet

There is compelling evidence that the Mediterranean diet is best to keep you healthy. This diet typically involves increased consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, extra virgin olive oil, fish and low consumption of red meat and dairy products that are high in saturated fats. Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet can help you live longer, with reduced incidence of many diseases, reduced inflammation and reduced overall frailty as you age. This is because the Mediterranean diet is full of foods containing high concentrations of compounds called polyphenols (pronounced ‘Poh-Lee-Feh-Nuhls’). Polyphenols are micronutrients that have antioxidant and, in some cases, anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help them absorb oxygen free radicals, which can otherwise cause degenerative diseases that are the major killers in Western society – such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. In addition to protecting from diseases, polyphenols also help protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation, reduce brain degeneration and reduce the signs of aging. Stay healthy and be great.

Hydraulink Jim Read Racing dragster wins Nitro Thunder event with ‘best under pressure’ race The Hydraulink-sponsored Jim Read Racing team has added another trophy to its cabinet with a dramatic win at the 2021 Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder event. The Hydraulink top fuel dragster, driven by Jim Read’s son Phil, came up against experienced drag racer Peter Xiberras in the final. In a last-minute twist, both cars rattled the tyres out of the gate and had to frantically pedal to the finish line, with Read getting the upper hand, in what he described as a “Stephen Bradbury style victory”. The event was the penultimate round of the 400 Thunder championship for all brackets ahead of next month’s Winternationals, and after a tough year full of Covid disruptions, Phil Read was delighted to be back out on the track.

Velisha Farms sews the seeds of safety By David Sligar

A leading grower and producer of premium vegetables in Australia, Velisha Farms has long been a class act in business and the community. It should come as no surprise then that Managing Director, Catherine Velisha, has stepped up to become a safety ambassador for Worksafe Victoria.

At its Werribee South headquarters, Velisha Farms runs a large packaging facility, co-located with a farm for broccoli, cauliflower and iceberg lettuce. The firm also grows zucchini, brassicas, kale, coriander, parsley and celery at other locations around Australia.

Ms Velisha follows in a long family tradition. Her grandfather and his brothers set up in the industry in 1949, starting as dairy farmers. After moving into horticulture, they became one of Australia’s first exporters of cauliflower and broccoli. Ms Velisha is well placed to advise on a broad range of safety matters as the business spans both packaging and agriculture, which she describes as one of

“We obviously have a packing facility which is lots of machinery, of moving parts, lots of people,” Ms Velisha said. “On a farm, you’ve obviously got really dangerous equipment like tractors and harvesters.”

and efficiently as you can. So we see it as a benefit to our business, not a cost.” And Ms Velisha should know. She has been surrounded by farming her whole life, even before entering the family business at 19. There has been tremendous change in farming, she said, particularly in terms of professionalisation and safety.

One of Ms Velisha’s strong beliefs is that “good safety is good business”.

But Velisha lists “fear” as one of the factors that can slow the evolution. It’s human nature to stick to existing ways of doing things. However, she believes that peer education between businesses at different stages of the journey can play a crucial role.

“It’s a benefit to productivity because when you’re constantly looking at your processes and your people, what it does is make sure you’re running as effectively

“It’s education, it’s giving that approachable, understandable, real life knowledge to people so they can implement.” To this end, Ms Velisha has united with Worksafe Victoria, which aims to promote high standards of safety and to provide insurance protection to businesses for workers. “There’s people out there that want to help you; make sure you educate yourself and your people to help build capacity.” Her safety promotion comes on top of a busy schedule. Velisha Farms employs around 70 people and sells to wholesalers, supermarkets and major retailers, while exporting to Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia.

Custom-made ladder rung covers provide much-needed safety

Konecranes' new app to help crane operators Konecranes is launching an app to help crane operators with their daily pre-shift and pre-lift inspections. CheckApp has been designed to help crane users quickly and easily record their findings. These pre-start inspections are part of the owners’ manual documentation of every crane and hoist, but Konecranes realised that thick paper manuals were not the most efficient way to conduct daily inspections. A lot of countries also require these pre-start inspections to be done as a matter of code compliance. “CheckApp was conceived as a great way to deliver an effective inspection format direct to any crane operator. Being electronic, it also becomes an accessible permanent record, unlike paper, which can be lost or misplaced,” said Mr John Jackman, Modernisation and Light Lifting Sales Manager, Konecranes and Demag. Mr Jackman was part of a team that developed the idea for CheckApp. The idea for this clever new app was the winning submission from a Konecranes global innovation contest.

Inspection template

“Almost everyone has a mobile device of some kind. Using electronic technology allows us to not only provide a quality, convenient inspection template, but also allows us to build in additional reference for those learning to do inspections properly,” he said. “In a practical sense, one of the most important functions the CheckApp achieves is that it improves the communication between a person identifying a fault and the repair of that fault by maintenance,” says Mr Jackman. “No one wants an operator using a crane with a potentially dangerous fault condition.” “I’m delighted to see the app ready for release. Daily Inspections

A daily inspection is a user’s – or crane operator’s – own assessment of the condition of an asset and environment for safe use. It is not an expert’s examination of the condition of an asset or component. High efficiency grit removal showcased at water conference

Independently tested grit removal technology that achieves 95% efficiency down to 105 microns over 10:1 turndown was introduced to the annual conference of the Queensland branch of the Water Industry Operators Association in Toowoomba on June 2-3.

CST Wastewater Solutions installation and service specialist Peter Bambridge introduced WIOA delegates to the Smith & Loveless PISTA VIO grit removal system, for which it is exclusive Australian distributor. Smith & Loveless says most grit removal systems are designed only to remove grit in the 200-300 micron range, but typically 40-80% of grit in wastewater is in the 105-200 micron size range. These findings motivated the company to develop a superior grit removal system down to 105 microns. “With so much of Queensland and Australia’s population living near the coast and in often remote sandy areas, such markedly superior grit removal offers immediate and long-term benefits in helping to prevent common grit problems in municipal and industrial water and wastewater systems,” said Mr Bambridge. Left unchecked, grit build-ups create trouble throughout the entire wastewater process, he said. They expose plants to wear, blockages, breakdowns, flooding and hazardous recovery operations by public and private wastewater operations staff. They are on the front line of defence against such issues causing downtime and service interruptions in municipal and private industrial applications, including food and beverage. “The Smith & Loveless technology provides clear benefits to municipal and industrial organisations plagued with grit issues. said Mr Bambridge. The latest PISTA VIO grit removal system features full variability of inlet and outlet channels. It also features a hydraulic vortex grit chamber design that utilises a new baffle system. This type of grit removal system – one of the first of its kind in the industry – provides the ability to design the inlet and outlet channels at any variable angle up to the full 360° of the chamber. Designers can arrange the system to fit existing sites, or maximise space during construction on new sites.

KDS liquid-to-solid separator

This highly efficient, low-maintenance technology – also available in a skid mounted version for easy transportation via truck or trailer, including to remote sites – requires no washwater, while capturing up to 95% of solids. KDS technology removes more than 50% of the water from wastewater sludge to provide a 50% reduction in transportation costs (which are typically $150 per tonne or higher).

“The new skid-mounted KDS technology offers potential users a highly effective plug-and-play solution to waste processing needs,” says Mr Bambridge. Measuring only 3.8 by 2m, it offers the type of low-maintenance high efficiency that is so important where agribusiness, industrial and municipal operations don’t have the resources to place engineering staff on close standby.

Fine Screening

CST provides fine screening down to 3mm to safeguard later parts of the treatment plant from larger bulkier waste that could clog systems and cause unwanted downtime. PBE-Roboplas' Yizumi 5 offers 'excellent value proposition' By David Sligar Sydney-based PBE-Roboplas provides a versatile range of plastics machinery and ancillary equipment. This includes injection moulding, blow moulding, loading, drying, temperature control and dosing systems. Francis Frutschi, father of current part owner Gerald, has been in the plastics business for more than 40 years. After immigrating to Australia from Switzerland in 1970, he began working for a machine agent where he was importing high speed injection moulding machines from Switzerland. “That agency did well at the time because the industry was in a growth stage as plastics became wildly recognised as an economical packaging and engineering material solution,” said Gerald. Francis Frutschi went on to found Roboplas in 1985, which in 1997 merged with Paul Blunschi Electrics (PBE). “My father’s been in this industry for a long time,” said Gerald. “That’s his life.” Today the bulk of their business comes from injection and blow moulders, who use the machines and equipment for diverse purposes. “Their machines need to be very flexible and universal,” he said. “A lot of the moulding is based on an engineered component or a storage solution such as food and beverage as an example.” PBE-Roboplas, which employs eight people, saw an upturn in orders during the pandemic. “It has been good for us,” he said. “With significant offshore outsourcing, businesses suddenly had to find alternatives, returning focus to Australian manufacturing. With recent government depreciation incentives and very limited good quality used equipment available, we have seen an increase in sales.”
