History of Bita-ug tree BITA-UG TREE. Titanic Massive. Awesome. Just few of the many superlatives one can attribute to the arboreal giant belonging to the Guttiferae family, genus calophyllum. Bita-ug population on shore areas dwindled due to the practices using its lumber as ship planks as notably in the large Spanish galleons during the Colonial era. Thus, the revolutionaries could have could have rested under shade of this giant Bita-ug on their way to and home. The surviving specimen has also been witness of the many events that
occurred within BITA-UG BEACH RESORT. It is the custom of Filipinos of naming places after trees, like what owner of BITA-UG BEACH RESORT, NINA FRASER did. Two Bita-ug trees served as a beckon for navigating fishermen in Sitio Daurong and nearby areas for the past decades. It plays a major role in bringing them ashore from their day to day life. These trees give ambiance to nature as you glance at the breathtaking panorama of the neighboring Balicasag, Gak-ang and

BOHOL ADVENTURES Last August an invitation for a trip to Bohol was left on my table at The FREEMAN. I was so excited thinking that at last I would be able to behold the elusive tarsier and the mysterious Chocolate Hills. “I’d bite a big chunk of this chocolate wonder,” I jokingly told my friends. I thought that was all that I would see in Bohol, but I was in for a surprise. We were lodged at the enchanting Amorita Resort, which is located on top a cliff overlooking the beautiful Alona Beach strip. And mind you, our three-day stay was not enough because of the many activities to be had: diving, site-seeing, and souvenir shopping to name a few. I was told that there are still a lot to expect of Bohol but we didn’t have the time to experience all of it. It was ok, at least now I have a reason to return to this wonderful island of wonders. In this issue, we explore the many places that one can visit in Bohol and the many activities that can be had. Vanessa Balbuena, lifestyle writer for Cebu Daily News, takes us to a trip to one of the most beautiful and exclusive islands in the province. Then our Korean contributor, Lee Ji Hyeon, will shows us how we can maximize our trip to Bohol. To make your trip easier we will be introducing two new maps: Tagbilaran and Panglao. Plus we have more surprises for you in this issue, which I would not want to spoil, so read on.

A 45-minute bumpy boat ride from Bohol mainland was all worth it once we set foot on the exclusive island nestled in the heart of Bohol Sea, where we found ourselves in our private shangri-la. The Pamilacan Paradise Island Resort, blessed with white sand beaches and bountiful marine life, was a true haven for solitude. The native Filipino-themed resort house is entirely made of bamboo and teak, housing one master bedroom, a family room, and one guest room, all with Oriental-type sliding doors, open lattice windows and walls of thatched palm in intricate designs. With utmost exclusivity and privacy as its major come-on to tourists, the structure is picturesquely situated on the edge of the ocean where both sunset and sunrise could be watched

Once guests arrive, they are made to land right on the beachfront and the unoccupied rooms will not be allowed for other guests --- making one feel like being in their own private island. Pamilacan experience comfortable and memorable. Historically, Pamilacan’s residents used to be engaged in the hunting and trading of whale sharks, whales and dolphins which is how the island got its name. “Pilak”, in the native dialect means a harpoon, is a fishing implement used to capture whale sharks, manta rays and dolphins. Pamilacan also served as a watch station against pirates and enemies of the Spanish colony as evidenced by the 200-year-old Spanish fort on the northeast side of the island. Presently, it is populated by about 200 families. While in the island, one can take an unguided exploration of the coastal village, eat a hearty lunch by the beach prepared by the local folk, and go snorkeling or dolphin-watching. The sight of jumping dolphins is a daily attraction in Pamilacan Island. If your fotunate, you’ll get the chance to see Sperm Whales and Bryde’s Whale during the months of March, April, May and June. If it’s solitude and marine adventure you’re after, Bohol’s not-so-hidden gem is the place to be. Useful Info A roundtrip boat transfer from Baclayon/Loay boat station to Pamilacan island would cost from P3000 (for 5 persons) to P5,000 (25 pax). Roundtrip transfers from Tagbilaran airport of seaport to Baclayon/Loay boat station would cost P800. Whale and Dolphin watching would cost from P1,500 (for 5 pax) to P3,000 (for 25 pax). Snorkeling in the island’s marine sanctuary would cost P250 per hour and rental of goggles is tagged at P150 per hour. For fishing trips it would cost you P250 per hour. An hour ride away from mainland Mactan is a small quite island called Caohagan. History has it that during the preSpanish era women from neighboring islands were brought to this isolated place by the marauding Moro pirates where they were abused and raped. Now, the small island boasts of a world-class cottage industry which for years has supported the humble lifestyle of the 200 families who inhabit the place. The women busy themselves quilting their simple life, turning them into beautiful works of art. The result is a masterpiece worthy to be displayed on the walls of art galleries. The quilt costs from P7,000 to

Seemingly, because if you would take a closer look at the place, it is actually extremely busy during the day with boatloads of gourmands trying to take advantage of the island’s abundance of fresh and delectable seafood. The best sellers are the softshelled lobsters, locally known as mantaha, c o s t i n g around P300 per piece. Local abalones would cost P3000 per container, each container having close to a dozen pieces. Baby octopuses (known as tabugok), clams, and other shellfish are available by vats at P300. Of course cooking these fares is part of what you’ll be paying, and they will cook it broiled, grilled, boiled, or sautéed in vinegar and soy sauce. Or if you have a method of cooking in mind, you can always give instructions to the cook.
By night, life takes an even slower pace as silence begins to blanket the whole island. The reason? The absence of electricity. The inhabitants of the island share a generator which lights up the community hall and several o t h e r community buildings. O t h e r than that, houses a r e lighted by candles and lanterns. This makes the place a perfect venue for contemplation. But mind you, renting a cottage here do not come cheap. An overnight stay would cost P1,900 for one person, or if you have a companion they charge P1,700 each. This is on top of the P70 entrance fee which they collect the moment you step on the island’s immaculate shore. Should you choose to stay for a brief period, cottages
are available at P100. And if you feel like you want to be serenaded, there are groups who might render a few classic hits for a fee. Caohagan Island can be reached by boat from Marigondon port (fare: P30) or at Dapdap port (near Vista Mar). Should you wish to rent one, you can arrange it with the boat-operator at the dock of Punta Engaño for P2,500 (20-seater boat) or P3,500 (60-seater boat).

A trip to Bohol is more than just catching a glimpse of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Chocolate Hills (vote for it at www.new7wonders.com), or hoping to cuddle the world’s smallest primate, the Philippine tarsier. make sure that they would take you back to your hotel or resort after the tour. If you plan to go around Tagbilaran City you can either take a taxicab, jeepney or the tricycle. But then again, it is a small city so you can literally go around on foot.
Baclayon Cave. Here is a rundown of some of the popular sites: Blood Compact Commemorative Shrine Bo-ol, Tagbilaran City day In 1565, Datu Sikatuna and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi forged diplomatic ties by performing a blood compact. This was done by slashing their arms and then mixing their blood with wine, which they later drank. Life size statues are placed on the very site where this happened and the location is so auspicious, you could only imagine how perfect the scene would have been.
Considered to be the second most visited destination in Central Visayas (next to Cebu), it would take more than a day for you to be fully satisfied with your visit to Bohol because of the many activities that you can do there. But if you have limited time, a two-day visit would suffice. It is advised that you get the earliest boat to Bohol (that would be around 6 a.m.), but should you wish you can also take the late night boat trip (10 p.m. with Lite Shipping), which is not as tiring and stressful. In going to the different tour sites, it is better that you hire a van (P3,000) or a taxi (P2,500)from Tagbilaran City to any destination. Outside the port you will find several of these. The drivers are well versed of the many sites of the island so they could double as tour guides. However, you should be wary of your rental time: from the time you hired the van until the time the tour is supposed to end. And do
For the first day we suggest that you take the following itinerary: From the Tagbilaran City seaport you can visit the Blood Compact Commemorative Shrine in Barangay Bo-ol, the Immaculate Conception Church in Baclayon, Python Sanctuary, and then the Tarsier Sanctuary (Corella). Then you can have lunch by the Loboc River followed by a walk along the hanging bridge. Then take a breather at the man-made forest, a visit to the butterfly museum, the peek at the chocolate hills in Carmen before marveling at the wondrous

with an impressive collection of religious relics and antiquities dating back to the 16th century. Tarsier Sanctuary Corella Considered as Bohol’s mascot, the Philippine tarsier is said to have existed for quite a long time (45 million years) and is the smallest primate in the world weighing roughly around 100gm. It has a small body with large eyes, said to be even bigger than its brain. It looks very cuddly and cute. However, handling them is discouraged by authorities as this somehow leads them to commit suicide. Loboc River Cruise Loboc, Bohol You can take one of the many “floating restaurants” that provides a lunch buffet (P300 for one hour, including lunch). The trip is an adventure in itself, as the boat would take you on a trip around the river into a forested area. This is jungle cruising at its best. The village itself has an astounding docking area for small boats. The experience is so surreal, you feel like you are in a set of a movie. For you to be able to catch the ride make sure that you’ll be at the dock site before 11:40. Hanging Bridge Sevilla, Bohol Located in Sevilla, the bridge is 70 meters long, and I would say, is pretty crude and ancient. The
entire experience is like being in the set of an Indiana Jones movie with the 12-meter deep river below, a seemingly unstable bridge that creaks at your every step, and a forest that seems to engulf the entire scenery. Chocolate Hills Carmen, Bohol Bohol’s most visited tourspot, the Chocolate Hills, can be viewed in three places, one of these is Carmen. On route to Carmen you can take a breather at the man-made forest in Bilar. During the summer period (March to June) the color of the hills is chocolate brown, the reason for its name. There are around 1,268 hills which you can see as far as the horizon goes. How it was formed is mind boggling but the most acceptable explanation is that it is made up of disintegrated corals owing to the island being submerged underwater ages ago.
Day2:BeachDay Panglao Island From Tagbilaran City, Panglao Island can be reached in 30-minutes by taxi (P400). A rustic place, it is very calm and peaceful with dozens of resorts each with a great view of the ocean and a generous portion of excellent white sand. On the main road there are plenty of motorbikes, which is the best way to go around the island.
In the entrance of Alona Beach there are bicycles which you can rent to go around the beach and back to your resort. The bike can ride a maximum of two people. Pamilacan Island If you would love to experience being with our sea cousins, you can rent a boat and go whale watching in Pamilacan Island. Here you will find seven species of marine mammals, but some are migratory, with Bohol as part of their route. The best time to go whale and dolphin watching is from March to June. However, resident dolphins can be found all year round, so it’s still worth to visit any time of the year. If you are staying in one of the resorts in Panglao Island, arrange with your hotel’s concierge or front desk ahead of time for a boat ride. Or if hotel rates are too steep for you, there are plenty of boats or bancas along Alona Beach. You can also ask in Dive Shops or restaurants where you can rent one. If you wish to get a good view of the whales and other cetaceans you better leave early (6 a.m.). Balicasag Island If snorkeling is your thing, then a visit to Balicasag Island would be best. The waters are very clear and there are many fishes in every color. This is the reason why the island is known for diving and snorkeling.

picks words By Vanessa Balbuena Before going island hopping in Bohol, one can first take a breather at Soledad Suites, the first and only upscale boutique hotel in Tagbilaran City offering a full range of concierge services. Conveniently located at Lou Square in the center of the city, it has 20 wellappointed guest rooms that are excellently maintained by its housekeeping staff.
photos By ryan lee Dining options inside the hotel includes Brewpoint Coffee Club and the Brewpoint Restobar where one can enjoy refreshing coffee and tea, European sausage sandwiches, the popular Panglao’s Siopao (a very tasty and filling steamed pork meat dumpling in soft white bun), Chinese food, Italian pasta, cakes, and some of the best wine in the city --- all these within a wi-fi hotspot

The beautiful beaches of Bohol go beyond the perfect white sand shores. Below the silent and calm sea is a marine life that is so rich it would be a sin to overlook them. I am not a diver, admittedly, but a recent visit to Bohol has opened my eyes to a world that is so astoundingly beautiful and majestic. A world, not our own, but in danger of our intrusion. Perhaps this is what movies of alien invasion are really about – human beings invading and destroying other worlds. Panglao Island is home to several of Bohol’s marine sanctuaries. The one that I was privileged
to visit was the Alona Beach Sanctuary. Here you would enjoy the rich marine life anchored around the mystical coral reefs that goes to a depth of 20 meters. The corals come in rich colors, an indication of the health of the sea. Diving for the first time in this beautiful other-worldly place is indeed a blessing to behold and enjoy. Fishes abound. Small

colorful fishes fly around you, unafraid of an alien presence. While schools of fishes would break at your approach. Here you would find clown fishes, scorpion fishes, frog fishes, nudibranchs, large sea fans, and even sea snakes. The site is safe for firsttime divers, and this in itself makes it a perfect place for night diving. I was told that there are three to four other beautiful dive sites in the area. The Kalipayan dive site is a ten-minute boat ride away from Alona Beach. It is a shallow dive making it perfect for night dives as well. The dive site near Bohol Beach Club is also a shallow dive and I was told that in the bottom is a cave where schools of fishes abound. This makes for a mysterious dive, and since the bottom is basically covered with sand, this makes the site perfect for sea walks.
Forty minutes from Alona Beach is the Doljo beach dive site which is the site of choice should the southwest winds decide to blow hard. In deeper areas you would find sharks which is quite a sight I would presume. Lastly, the Napaling dive site, 30-minutes away from Alona Beach, has a steep coral wall with large sea fans. The scene, I was told, is picture perfect that reason why this is the favorite site for underwater photographers. Aside from that surrounding Panglao Island, Bohol has dozens of small islands with excellent sites for diving. Luckily development has not yet taken its toll on the rich marine ecosystem of Bohol, and with responsible diving we are assured to enjoy these breathtaking sights for a long time.

travel tips Traveling on a budget? Well, fret not as, with proper planning and with a miser attitude, you might just be able to get the best and most relaxing bargains in town. But of course you should not expect too much from bargains. No more special treatments or snacks on board the plane, or maybe no more welcome drinks in you hotel. Nonetheless, these are but details which you can do without. iNeed Travel and Culture Magazine has the following suggestions for you:

MARVIN TABACON 1. Take public transportation. It’s not too bad and it’s cheaper. Ask from a certified tourism official for rates. Usually a jeepney ride would cost P8 for the first 5 kilometers and an additional P1 for every succeeding kilometer. 2. Pack up on snacks and other
travel essentials. These you have to buy in bulk at the local grocery store. Buy locally made products and brands as these are much cheaper than the imported one’s, and although many foreigners complain that they are not at par to the products they are used to, well, lets face it, it’s the best to that which you are used to, and one that would save you more valuable money which you can have better use when you get to your destination. 3. Who needs souvenir items? The best souvenir items that you can get are pictures. T-shirts you can print on your own or you can buy anywhere. But pictures, they are genuine and nothing can replace the memory that you can play over and over again by leafing through the pages of your photo album. 4. Go for packages. you have extra cash then would be better if you get travel concierge to give you

super budget package. Otherwise, you can brave the unknown and set out on your own, deciding on where to stay, where to eat, where to go, as you go along. Of course sans the arrangement you would save plenty as you would not need to pay people to decide what your itinerary would be, plus who knows maybe you might just discover a secret destination not yet known to travel agents. Be brave and explore the unknown, after all travel is about exploration.

IT IS said that “looking good is no longer just about having the perfect hair and make up. For a woman having beautifully manicured nails is a huge confidence boost”. This nail art has captured the world of fashion like a storm, and here in Cebu this fad is being pioneered by Hollywood Nails. Nail art is an intricate process. The canvass being the nail and the medium, nail polish and every possible embellishment that one could imagine including gem stones, glitters, dried flowers, and even acrylic formed into delicate sculptures. At Hollywood Nails, each piece is a work of art. Originals, which can only be conceived by the creative minds of their artists. But should customers have designs in mind, their artists would be
happy to transform these designs into nail art. No detail has been spared in the putting up of the salon, just as attention to even the smallest detail is placed for every nail art done by her artists. And as owners Terence and Gigi Connelly revealed, no amount is too big either as long as the whims and desires of their customers are met. With this, patrons would expect no less than total satisfaction, as you get to be spoiled the way Hollywood stars are pampered. So if you are longing for total body pampering, a total make-over, or just want to indulge in spoiling your nails with the best service this side of the region, drop by Hollywood Nails and check out their most coveted services. Just as clothes make a man, nails also say much of you.

food trip
words By Ritche T. Salgado, PTRP photos by ryan lee Everyday I keep telling myself that I need to go on a diet. I know that vegetarian is the way to go. Sad to say, my passion for gastronomic pleasures would sometime hinder me from fulfilling a healthy eating regimen. One thing I found out though is that the Korean diet is a good option to take. A regular Korean meal would consist of rice, plenty of side dishes or banchan, soup, and main dish which can either be meat, seafood or tofu. It is all served together and communal eating over a long table is very common. Sometimes, noodles will replace the rice, but rarely does this happen. Korean food is famous for the many banchan that is served with your meal. On average, you will be served six different side dishes in small plates or bowls. These can either be vegetable, fish, or meat and is prepared in different ways: fermented, stir fried, steamed, with seasoning or without, dried or even raw. But perhaps the most prominent banchan, which every Koreans cannot live without, is kimchi.
Photos taken at Yuhee Jeong Korean Restaurant

Kimchi is vegetables (cabbage, radish, Chinese cabbage, and pechay) fermented in a mixture of brine, low sodium fish sauce, ginger, onion, garlic, chili, spices, sugar and other seasonings which vary on the region or tradition that it is made (there are more than 600 types of kimchi!). Aside from being a side dish, kimchi is also used as an ingredient in other Korean dishes like soup (kimchi chigae or kimchi stew) or even rice dishes (kimchi bokum bop or kimchi fried rice). Nakyung Hwang of Yuhee Jeong Korean Restaurant (Address: Edison St., Lahug, Tel: 032-234-2079)told us in a recent visit that Korean food in itself is complete with lots of vegetables for vitamins and minerals, rice or noodles for carbohydrates, and a little meat or tofu for protein. “It is not oily and greasy because food is never fried. It is low calorie and well balanced. Balance is very important, she said.
Another famous healthy Korean food is Bibimpap (literally means stirred mixed rice). This is a bowl of sizzling hot rice topped with all kinds of vegetables and gochujang (chili paste). A common addition is raw egg and beef. All these are mixed together before eaten. Bibimpap can also be served cold. But perhaps what would appeal to most Filipinos is Bulgogi (thinly sliced prime cut of beef grilled marinated for at least four hours in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, wine, sugar and spices). The grilled meat is wrapped in lettuce, cabbage or other leafy vegetable along with a little ssamjang (a mixture of soybean and chili pepper sauce), kimchi or other banchan. With the burgeoning of Korean restaurants in the city, it would not be difficult for you to try these healthy and filling dishes. So if you plan to dine out later tonight then try dropping by the nearest Korean restaurant in your place and ask for these dishes. If you have an adventurous palate you can try their other fares which are just as delightful and satisfying.
Cebu (032) Cebu is the most progressive province in central Philippines. It is a narrow island measuring 225 km from North to South and is flanked on both sides by the straits of Bohol (between Bohol and Cebu) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros). Its capital city, Cebu City, is the oldest city in the country. Cebu City is just 20-minutes away from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. It has all the makings of a metropolitan center and is considered as one of the best venues for seminars and conferences owing to its many facilities like hotels and restaurants.
