A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER AND PUBLISHER

influential-magazine.com

IT’S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WE’RE NEAR THE END OF 2020 AND OUR NOVEMBER / DECEMBER EDITION IS HERE. This year went by quickly for me. Many of my family, friends, and colleagues note the virus, subsequent lockdowns, and an uncertain future all contributing to consuming the direction of our daily lives. I’d humbly like to thank all our readers, advertisers, and supporters for making our success possible. I’m extremely proud of each edition we publish, and I love to hear your feedback when I’m out in our communities. It’s often complimentary, but then our readers are polite people who, when they’ve nothing pleasant to say, usually don’t say anything. I hope you enjoy reading through our November / December edition which celebrates so many influential people doing amazing things and pursuing lives full of happiness and goodwill. Thank you again for all your support over the years. The digital magazine business is a tough business, but I know readers love to read through each edition of InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential, and Teen InFluential (and we know firsthand because we hear from so many of our supporters), and as long as that’s the case, we’ll continue forward moving. I wish you a wonderful end of year full of love and self-care. Here’s hoping 2021 will be bigger, better, and brighter for everyone. All the Best,

ounded by Keeran Janin as a collaboration between leading independent Swiss watch design houses and pioneering inspirational achievers, Avantist watches are a tribute to the legacies of phenomenal men and women from sporting champions and movie idols to world leaders and business icons, the greatest achievers of our generation. They build watches inspired by their ambassadors and celebrate their iconic achievements by incorporating materials from those events into the design. Founding new luxury watch brand Avantist in 2015, Bruneian Keeran Janin continues to cultivate his entrepreneurial drive, born from growing up in Brunei, studying engineering, and following his passion for design and creative arts. While in London studying for his computer science degree in university, Keeran worked as an apprentice to a diamond and gem dealer and became an accomplished jewelery designer. After graduating, he pursued a career in the tech industry, playing key roles in multiple start-ups in Brunei, Singapore, Silicon Valley (USA), and Switzerland. Keeran established Avantist to embark into the luxury goods business with the goal of owning a group of watch and jewelery brands. For Keeran, watches “in one sense are a tool to tell the time; but for my watches, they are more about how they make you feel - wearing a great watch can inspire a person to achieve amazing things.” His goal of building a watch company meant two years of immersing himself into the Swiss watchmaking industry, developing the best team and designing a beautiful, rare timepiece that would last generations. And, with the inspiring stories of iconic brand ambassadors woven into Avantist watches, Keeran and his team search for pivotal moments in history that can be integrated into the brand’s unique identity. Outside of Avantist, Keeran serves on the board of DARe – Darussalam Enterprise, helping towards their mission of creating a thriving environment for Bruneian small and medium enterprises. He also actively mentors young entrepreneurs and start-up companies. l

THE ALTRUISM EFFECT

THE SCIENCE BEHIND DOING GOOD AND WHY IT MAKES US HAPPIER FROM CHARITY WORK TO VOLUNTEERING, EVERYONE FEELS GOOD WHEN THEY’RE DOING GOOD. SOMETIMES WE DO IT BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN A CAUSE, AND SOMETIMES GOING OUT OF OUR WAY TO HELP SOMEONE WHEN WE CAN SEE THEY NEED IT IS ENOUGH TO BOOST OUR MOODS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALTRUISM IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE AND IT’S A PROVEN WAY TO MAKE YOURSELF HAPPIER. kWRITTEN BY JANNA BRESLIN

She is the co-founder Complete Human (www.completehuman.com) the new multi-media platform that takes a deep dive into the areas of mind, body, soul, and planet while exploring what makes us who we are and what will make us better.

cience has proven acts of altruism make you happy and increase your overall wellbeing particularly when you make it a habit. If you’ve thought about dedicating your life to helping others, there’s good news: it comes with several measurable health benefits and could even help you live longer. Of course, true altruism is about helping others in a selfless way. If you’re only doing good deeds to get something in return, it probably won’t manifest in the happy life you’re envisioning. Here’s why doing good for other people (without expectations attached) is scientifically proven to make us happier.

One Step at a Time Wanting the world to be a better place is a noble goal, one that requires us to act. Despite our good intentions, it’s easier to come up with reasons for putting acts of service on hold. Maybe you keep meaning to donate to your favorite charity, but it’s been a rough week and you’d rather spend your extra cash on a pizza. Perhaps procrastination has stopped you from volunteering at the local animal shelter? Before you get too down on yourself, there’s good news. Committing yourself to a life of altruism is only the first step toward happiness.

48

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

In fact, one study has shown merely contemplating a kind gesture can make you feel good. Follow through, and you’ll feel even better after the gesture is complete. The study gave money to participants and told them to go shopping. Scientists told half of the participants to spend it on themselves, and others half to spend it on someone else. The scientists interviewed the participants beforehand to monitor their brain activity, then let the groups go shopping. What they found is the altruistic group associated their purchases with happiness, even though they weren’t buying for themselves.

Small Steps Reap Big Rewards Even small acts of kindness are better than nothing at all. When we think of “good deeds,” many of us tend to picture major purchases or huge time commitments. Guilt can overshadow your good deeds if you’re convinced friends, family, and peers are more altruistic than you. However, you can achieve the same level of happiness by doing something much smaller. Researchers from the study above found the amount spent on others didn’t matter the act of altruism was enough. Whether

influential-magazine.com

the purchase was big or small, gift givers experienced the same levels of happiness. No matter how simple or small the gesture, taking the time to act with altruism was enough to give people a measurable, positive mood boost.

But What About Me? What if you have ulterior motives? Does that tarnish your own happiness? Scientists from the study suggest they might. Altruism requires selflessness, that is, knowing our actions are for the benefit of others. If you expect something in return, it’s not a good deed. It’s transactional. Acts of service should come from the kindness in our hearts, not from the motivation to get what we want. Sure, it’s nice to be praised and appreciated, but that shouldn’t be why you do good things. Don’t get caught up in returning favors or obsessing over how many social media likes you get for your good deeds. They defeat the purpose of doing good things for the sake of it and you won’t get the health and happiness benefits, either.

Getting Into the Altruism Habit There’s no definitive answer to how long your altruism-related happiness will last, so don’t start

scheduling good deeds at specific intervals. However, there’s something to an altruistic “schedule” you should consider. People who are kind to others on a regular basis experience greater well-being and enjoy physical health benefits such as lower blood pressure. In fact, some studies have revealed generosity can produce the same results as some medications. While acts of kindness aren’t a panacea for real health issues, they can lower stress, induce happiness and stimulate the release of good hormones all of which contribute to wellness. Doing good deeds regularly correlates to a higher life expectancy, too. That happiness can reduce stress and protect you from developing chronic health problems. Remember, altruism isn’t a happiness vending machine, put good deed tokens in and happiness comes out, there are significant benefits to being a genuinely good person. The lesson here is next time you’re feeling down, think about how you can brighten someone’s day. Sometimes taking care of others is the best way to take care of yourself. l PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WWW.COMPLETEHUMAN.COM

AFFORDABLE ANTI-AGING

TIPS FROM A CELEBRITY DERMATOLOGIST

pending more time at home has spurred a focus on overall skin health and rituals to smooth out lines and wrinkles - and they want convenient solutions that get the job done but don’t cost a fortune. A new poll from RoC Skincare and Poshly surveyed 1,000 beauty shoppers to understand if women have shifted skincare habits since the pandemic. Results showed that while 71% had to make changes to their budget, they still want to maintain an effective routine. Whether they are rethinking highend anti-aging treatments, skipping in-office visits or simply being more conservative with spending, women are turning to options found right in the drugstore aisle: 1 in 4 reported they have stopped getting injectables or professional skincare treatments and started using retinol and drugstore products. Fortunately, there are inexpensive practices and products out there like OTC retinol (a vitamin A derivative) that are effective at

WITH ALL THE CHANGES THAT HAVE OCCURRED THIS YEAR, IT’S NOT SURPRISING THAT WOMEN EVERYWHERE HAVE BEEN REASSESSING THEIR SKINCARE ROUTINES. keeping skin looking bright, smooth and youthful, according to boardcertified celebrity dermatologist Dr. Anna Guanche. “While some of my best advice to my patients may seem simple,” Guanche says, “it’s also all too easy to neglect the basics that really make a difference to protect and improve your skin.” Here Guanche shares her top anti-aging tips that involve either no cost or affordable items found online and at your local store.

1

Go easy on the hot water Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness and the appearance of

premature aging. Keep the water temperature from getting too hot (you can even set your water heater to a lower default temp). Pro tip: Apply moisturizer right out of the bath or shower, and immediately after washing your face.

2

Look to retinol at night Retinol is an anti-aging mainstay, and choosing one has never been easier because of the new Retinol Correxion Night Serum Capsules from RoC - the brand that discovered how to stabilize this superpower ingredient. This treatment in particular rivals prescription skincare options and it works - clinical testing showed 97% had visibly reduced lines and wrinkles after one night. “What I love about these Capsules is the instant gratification you get with overnight line smoothing benefits and how the results keep getting better overtime if you make them a regular part of your nighttime routine,” says Dr. Guanche. “And even better, they are perfectly dosed, don’t irritate skin and a steal for the price.”

Find RoC at your local drugstores or Target.com.

3

Prioritize sleep While you’re letting your skin absorb a retinol like RoC, make sure you’re sleeping a good eight hours per night if possible. Keeping your room cooler and darker at night will help ensure you’ll not only fall asleep more easily, but stay asleep longer, for the rest your body and face need.

moisturizer or sunscreen containing at least 30 SPF for the best protection against sunburn and skin cancer. Pro tip: Keep sunscreen near the door or in your bag so you’ll remember to apply before going out. Sticking to these tips daily will make a big difference in how your skin looks and feels. Try a couple until they become habit, then try more. Your skin will thank you! (BPT) l

Pro tip: Launder your bedding regularly, especially your pillowcases! That way you know you’re helping to keep your skin clean while you’re getting your beauty rest.

4

Stock up on vitamins “Keeping your skin looking and feeling its best is also a question of feeding it from within,” says Dr. Guanche. Taking daily supplements containing vitamins such as C, E, D and K will help nourish your skin from the inside out. Eating foods rich in vitamins, like colorful vegetables and fruits, is also a vital - and delicious - way to “feed” your skin well.

5

Limit sun exposure While getting a little vitamin D from sunshine is a good thing, too much time under UV rays can prematurely age your skin - and put your skin at risk. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a facial NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

he NEHERA woman doesn’t just throw a textile on herself, but delicately unlocks the magic functions of her attire. The only difference from then and now is for the NEHERA woman, the ritual is not anymore enacted for an audience, but herself. She wants to experiment with the favorite pieces of wardrobe not touched for months, to enjoy the tactile pleasure of high-quality fabrics, to step barefooted on the grass, to breathe in, to breathe out. That is why the collection welcomes a broad expression of attitudes, from simple and civil to experimental, expressive styling to creative layering. Whereas the pre-collections dominant inspiration comes from the folk underwear skirt and the way it was traditionally stored: twisted and belted and stored in the drawer. The SS2021 collection turns its attention to the upper and outer layers of clothing and dressing rituals. The collection employs more decorative motifs while reiterating the “Less is beautiful” as the central signature of the brand. The essence of NEHERA is functional comfort. Relying on creativity and innovation to create exceptional fashion that remains elegant, regardless of the evanescent trends. In a fashion world obsessed with more, NEHERA uncovers the beauty in less. With a twist. The timelessness of the designs is reflected in the quality of materials. Along with local craftsmen, every fiber is carefully reviewed to match the most rigorous sustainability benchmark. NEHERA’s culture champions spontaneity, vitality, and sustainability, while the creations feel grounded and unassuming. Removing the unnecessary, and the superfluous to reveal graceful designs that are honest, unique, and quietly compelling. NEHERA is an independent Slovak brand that revived the heritage of the famous Czechoslovak brand that flourished in the 1930s and made history worldwide in the integration of design, production, and retail. A MEMORABLE FESTIVE

SEASON MENU

114

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

influential-magazine.com

FESTIVE SEASON GATHERINGS, EVEN IN A TIME WHEN SMALLER GROUPS ARE ENCOURAGED, TAKE ON SPECIAL MEANING FOR MANY FAMILIES.

P

art of the joy comes from the food that’s shared among loved ones from appetizers and sides to the main course. This year, you can enjoy those meaningful moments with your closest family members and friends by putting together a menu that keeps smiles on faces from the first bite to the last. Start with your favorite among the nearly endless appetizer options that symbolize the season then enjoy a tender tri-tip alongside bacon-wrapped asparagus and a twist on classic, roasted potatoes. Visit Culinary.net to find more festive season menu ideas. Start Your Seasonal Celebration with Small Bites While main courses, sides and desserts may be what festive season memories are made of, you can calm family members’ and guests’ appetites with an array of appetizers like these:

Meatballs Stuffed mushrooms Stuffed peppers Sliced cheese Sliced meats Crackers Spinach dip Cheesy bread Sliders Little smokies Fresh fruit and vegetables A Simply Tasty Side Many recipes commonly associated with the festive season are accompanied by lengthy ingredient lists or hours spent in the kitchen. However, all that time and effort doesn’t have to be used on this year’s side dish when you opt for a simple yet mouthwatering option. You can feel good about what you’re feeding your family this festive season while saving prep time by serving this Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus made with Coleman Natural

bacon, which contains no artificial ingredients or preservatives and is sourced from American family farms that humanely raise their animals with no antibiotics or added hormones. Whether it’s served as a side dish or an appetizer, it calls for just a handful of everyday ingredients for a dish you can be proud of. Visit ColemanNatural.com/Recipes for more seasonal recipe inspiration.

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Wrap 2 asparagus stalks with 1 slice bacon. Repeat with remaining asparagus and bacon. Place bundles on baking sheet. Drizzle asparagus ends with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 3. Bake until asparagus is cooked through and bacon is crisp, about 20 minutes. A Tender Festive Season Tri-Tip Centering your festive season meal around a flavorful cut of meat can make the celebration truly memorable, especially when it’s cooked to perfection over the hot flame of a grill. This year, take your family’s main course to the next level with a Garlic Herb Tri-Tip lightly seasoned with garlic, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper to let the naturally flavorful New Zealand grass-fed beef speak for itself. Because the animals roam and graze freely over lush green hills and pastures year-round, New Zealand grass-fed beef is leaner, more finely textured and tastes just as nature intended. An Easy but Impressive Side Every festive season meal comes with plenty of traditional and family-favorite dishes, and one of the most common on tables is potatoes. This year, you can save time on seasonal favorites with Creamer potatoes from The Little Potato Company. OVERCOMING THE

STIGMA OF ADDICTION

IS KEY TO TREATMENT

O

ADDICTION IS A CHRONIC BUT TREATABLE MEDICAL CONDITION. ften unintentionally, many people still talk about addiction in ways that are stigmatizingmeaning they use words that can portray someone with a substance use disorder in a shameful way, which may discourage them from seeking treatment. To reduce harmful stigma and negativity around substance use disorders and encourage people to obtain the help they need, it is essential to change the way society views addiction. The first step is to understand why this stigma exists, and how we all can help to remove it.

What Is Stigma? Stigma can be defined as an attribute that is deeply discrediting, reducing the bearer from a whole and usual person to a tainted, discounted one. Stigma about people with substance use disorders might include inaccurate or unfounded beliefs that they are dangerous, incapable of managing treatment, or at fault for their condition.

Where Does Stigma Come From? Stigma around addiction may come from old and inaccurate ideas, or fear of things that are different or misunderstood. Research has shown that public attitudes and beliefs about addiction are also affected by how it is presented in the media. For example, TV shows and movies often portray characters with substance use

132

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

disorders negatively. These depictions can increase fear, pity and even anger toward people with substance use disorders. In addition, people with substance use disorders may feel ashamed of their addiction and their difficulty in stopping drugs or alcohol. This may discourage them from reaching out to others or seeking treatment.

The Truth About Addiction Addiction was once considered to be due to a weakness in a person’s character. But decades of scientific research have demonstrated that addiction is not a choice. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it is a brain disorder that involves functional changes to brain circuits involved in reward, stress, and self-control. These brain changes can make it extraordinarily difficult for a person to resist the urge to continue using drugs, even if their drug use is causing problems at home, work, or school. The good news is that treatment can help set the brain on a path to recovery. Addiction is a lot like other diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Both disrupt the normal, healthy functioning of the body, both have serious harmful effects for those affected, both are influenced by the environments the person lives in and both are, in many cases, preventable and treatable. If left untreated, they can get worse and may lead to disabilities and death. Just like with many other health conditions, people with substance use disorders can recover and continue to lead healthy lives with the appropriate support.

influential-magazine.com

respect and compassion. To start, making simple changes in language can help reduce harmful negativity around substance use disorders. When talking to or about people with substance use disorders, consider using person-first language, which focuses on the person-not their illness. This includes removing words that define a person by their condition or may have negative connotations. For example, “a person with a substance use disorder” has a neutral tone and separates the person from his or her disorder. Someone who is working to overcome drug use can be described as a “person in recovery.” A number of factors, most of them outside of one’s control, make people more vulnerable to addiction. These factors include genetics and family history, the environment in which they grew up, trauma or cooccurring mental health issues, and many other social and behavioral factors. Ultimately, addiction doesn’t discriminate. It can impact people of all ages, races, genders, and social classes.

How Can We Overcome Stigma? Reducing stigma and helping people achieve their best health outcomes starts with each of us. By paying attention to our own attitudes and beliefs about addiction, we can consciously begin to replace any fears and judgments with

Importantly, check in with friends or loved ones about how they refer to themselves and how they would like others to refer to them. This can be one step toward opening up a dialogue from which to learn about each other and offer compassion and support. We can also educate ourselves on the facts about addiction. It’s important to seek science-based information from a trustworthy source. And we can share that information with others to help them overcome their own misperceptions about addiction. NO LONGER FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS

nd now that those days are behind you, the hustle, bustle and hassle of commercial airlines and airports can be your next farewell. Meet ONEflight International, your new travel buddy, bringing the joy and thrill back to flying. No more turning on your Google flight tracker for the best deals or acting out a scene from the Hunger Games when it comes to an airline’s early flight check-in process. ONEflight International’s new stateof-the-art Book A Jet or BAJit.com program makes taking that trip to California (or anywhere else you have to go, for that matter) as easy as calling your nearest ride- hailing company. Think this service may be outside your budget? Think again. ONEflight’s volume-based pricing allows savings of 30 to 40 percent over typical private jet costs and with a database of more than 4,000 jets and 500 of the leading charter operators, you are guaranteed to find the perfect size and style.

The price for a single flyer may seem daunting. However, President and CEO Ferren Rajput believes the private flights are ideal for businesspeople and families. When factoring in the time, money and overall hassle it takes to travel in groups, flying private quickly appears as the most viable option. Plus, let’s not forget that each flight comes with a complimentary catered meal - and we’re not talking bagged pretzels and a cup of water. Passengers are connected with a Concierge Coordinator that will accommodate any food and dietary restrictions to provide a deliciously catered meal selected by the passengers, with crowd favorites such as steak and potatoes. Private jets also offer the convenience of smaller, less crowded airports. For the group of business folks eager to reach their destination, flying private cuts out the stress. No long checkin station or even longer TSA lines to fight through, shaving off hours of

travel time and leaving more time for business. In an interview with Arizona Daily Mix Channel 7, President and CEO Rajput says, “the private jet segment was really just supposed to be for the wealthy, the top super-rich, but it’s not that anymore.” With the new system BAJit.com, developed by ONEflight International, anyone can experience the luxury and convenience of a private jet. If you’re going to fly private jets, you need to check out ONEflight’s BAJ, the most efficient booking system." says Robert Herjavec, founder and CEO of Herjavec Group, a global cybersecurity company, leading Shark on ABC’s Shark Tank, and brand ambassador for ONEflight. TIPS FOR LANDING A JOB IN THE COVID-19 ERA

F

or recent graduates, the disruption to the hiring and internship experience has brought unexpected challenges and adversity, and tested their ability to persevere. Some internships have been canceled or pushed back and job offers have been rescinded as companies have frozen hiring to lessen the financial burden brought on by the pandemic. Travel bans are restricting graduates from taking jobs across borders and graduates are faced with fewer job openings and increased competition for those jobs. These are just some of the added roadblocks new graduates are facing in 2020.

THE JOB HUNT AFTER COLLEGE IS EXHILARATING AND EMOTIONAL WHILE AT THE SAME TIME STRESSFUL AND EXHAUSTING. ADDING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC INTO THE MIX THREATENS TO UPEND THE PROCESS FOR THE NEARLY 4 MILLION 2020 GRADUATES.

At the same time, many companies are pivoting to virtual interviews and networking events and, in some instances, entire internships have gone remote. With remote jobs and internships comes new challenges for students and grads to overcome. Kristen Wahl, director of the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge and the Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition program at Argonne

140

National Laboratory, has helped thousands of students land jobs post-college during her 20-plus years leading the program.

Here are a few tips from Wahl for landing that first job in the COVID-19 era:

you’ve made through industry organizations or extracurricular activities. Pick up the phone and call recruiters to learn more about an open position. It’s all about taking the extra step to stand out from the crowd when first impressions are no longer face-to-face.

Use the virtual tools at your disposal to network with recruiters. With in-person events off the table this fall, jobseekers need to seek alternative methods for making the connections that previously would have happened at career fairs. Reach out to your network on LinkedIn and other recruiting platforms. Email the professional contacts

Take advantage of virtual recruiting fairs and career prep sessions. Is your school hosting a virtual career fair? Is the student organization you’re a member of bringing in a guest speaker for a virtual chat? Identify the many opportunities available to connect with potential employers and use them to make connections. To stand out from the

crowd, you’ll need to be an active participant. Ask questions. Share thoughts. Contribute to the conversation. Don’t be afraid to speak up, but also make sure you do your research on the company first. At EcoCAR, we identified ways to connect students with prospective employers. We quickly ramped up virtual recruiting webinars and career prep sessions, continued facilitating personal introductions and industry mentoring opportunities and revised our recruiting tools to better match talent with relevant positions. And finally, practice your virtual personal sales pitch and refine your digital professional presence to reflect all you have to offer. Make sure your LinkedIn and portfolio highlight your experiences and skills. Go beyond just sharing your degree information and articulate your value proposition. This includes showcasing your out-ofthe-classroom experiences, leadership training, previous internships, as well as describing times you overcame adversity. Recruiters want problem solvers and critical thinkers. They want someone who will pick up a new skill quickly and learn fast. So, instead of looking at the pandemic as a setback on your job search journey, view it as an opportunity to demonstrate you possess these qualities and are right for the job. (BPT) l

STUDY:

MINORITY-OWNED SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE U.S. ARE BETTER AT ADAPTING TO COVID-19

I

AND SHOWING MORE OPTIMISM THAN OTHERS

t’s not surprising that many small businesses are struggling to maintain operations, earn profits and sustain their work forces in the wake of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many minorities who own small businesses across the U.S. remain more optimistic about the future than their non-diverse counterparts, though they acknowledge a need for greater support from the government from their communities and from the private sector. Those were some of the findings of the nationwide Small Business Mindshift 2020 survey recently completed by Union Bank, a financial institution that’s been serving small businesses on the West Coast for more than 155 years. The survey determined that in the U.S., 34% of minority small-business owners (SBOs) can “see a path forward” for future business success and survival despite COVID-19. In comparison, only 20% of non-diverse SBOs are predicting such outcomes. Minority SBOs have also been comparatively more proactive than their peers in forming new strategies to cope with pandemic-imposed changes. In fact, 24% believe COVID-19 has had

142

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

a positive effect on their businesses, compared to just 12% of non-diverse SBOs. Minority SBOs include those owned by Black, Latinx and Asian respondents. “These survey findings reinforce what we already know - minority small businesses have always worked hard despite difficult circumstances or external environments - and as a result, have consistently been more resilient and adaptable,” said Frank Robinson, Diverse Markets and Community-Based Programs Executive for Union Bank. “Minority small businesses are at the heart and soul of their local communities, and as such, we are committed to helping them recover and thrive by providing them added support through critical economic stability and the tools necessary to succeed moving forward.” In other findings from the bank’s latest survey: U.S. Minority SBOs are Better at Adapting Their Business Strategies In general, U.S. minority SBOs have shown significantly more innovation than others when it comes to adjusting business practices to stay afloat; 52% have altered products or services, 50% have changed online retail options and 47% have switched their online advertising messaging.

California-based SBOs are Struggling, but Minority Owners are More Optimistic SBOs in California are feeling more deflated and uncertain compared to other small business owners across the U.S. Only 13% of California small business owners say they see a path forward for how their business can survive versus 23% U.S. SBOs overall. Additionally, 41% said that applying for the financial aid that could help their businesses is too complex to even attempt. Again, however, minority SBOs in California have demonstrated more innovation and optimism during this time and have been more likely than their peers to implement new strategies. Not only are minority SBOs in California more likely to have embraced their community leadership roles - with 55% feeling an increased sense of responsibility to help their community vs. 44% of non-diverse SBOs - but they’re also getting more support in return, with 39% feeling supported by their local community vs. 33% of nondiverse SBOs. COVID-19 Vaccine Key to Success A third of U.S. small-business owners said their future success and survival will be determined by the Presidential

election, and two in three see the 2020 election as the most important in their time as business owners. However, the overwhelming majority said that the availability (or lack thereof) of a COVID-19 vaccine will be the No. 1 issue affecting their success over the next six months. As a way of supporting minority businesses and helping to address social and racial injustices in the U.S., Union Bank took the initiative in June to launch a $10 million Community Recovery Program aimed at providing SBOs access to capital, entrepreneurship, job retention and retraining. “This pandemic has hit all small businesses, and particularly minority owned small businesses, extremely hard,” said Todd Hollander, Head of Business Banking and Small Business for Union Bank. “But every day, we see our clients finding creative ways to keep their doors open and their employees paid. We are here to support them in those efforts both as a bank and as members of our local communities.” More information about Union Bank’s Community Recovery Program is available at UnionBank.com/about-us/ newsroom/community-recovery-program. William Jackson: Who is Mimi Rose? Mimi Rose: I describe myself as someone who feels intensely and turns her emotions into music. Creating makes me so passionate. William: Share more details about your path to the music industry. Mimi Rose: I don’t really remember “getting into the industry”, it’s been something I’ve known all my life. As long as I can remember, I’ve been dancing, singing, and writing songs, so it’s always been there. William: Do you play any instruments? Mimi Rose: I play piano, guitar, bass, ukelele, harmonica, and I studied violin for eight years, but as I’ve not played it in some time, I’m not sure it counts anymore. William: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be? Mimi Rose: There are so many talented people doing their thing in the music industry. I’d love to collaborate with Lennon Stella, she’s such an inspiration to me. And, there’s Julia Michaels for whom I’d love to collaborate and write a song. William: What is your perspective on the topic of fame? Mimi Rose: I believe an improper view of fame can change people and often not for the better. People shouldn’t eagerly pursue fame. In fact, if you’re in the music industry just to be famous, you’ve chosen the wrong path. Fame should be a byproduct of your success as a passionate and hard-working artist. William: What encouragement are you planning to share with yourself a year from now? Mimi Rose: I’d like to encourage myself to remember to stay calm and recognize fully life is too short. It’s important not to waste my time chasing after superficial things. One of my biggest concerns it not living my life to the fullest.

William: What’s an usual day in the life of Mimi Rose? Mimi Rose: Every day is different; my life presently is unscheduled, and I love it. But I enjoy working out in the morning before I start my day. Ideally, I arise, write in my diary, work out, shower, do my vocal warmups, and commence other aspects of my day. But honestly, I don’t always have time to keep to that ideal schedule as I’m truly busy. As of late, I’ve multiple songwriting sessions with different artists and I enjoy live streaming with my fans. William: Who has had the most impact on your life so far, and why? Mimi Rose: I had a friend die about three years ago and my life had a before and after. It opened my eyes to the fact we’re here on borrowed time. We don’t own earth or life and every second of this life counts. Hence, I don’t want to waste any part of it. I just want to be happy. William: What would you say is the greatest lesson you’ve learned thus far in this business? Mimi Rose: It’s important to set my boundaries. I used to try to help everyone, and as I became successful it became difficult to establish boundaries because I didn’t want to come off as rude or a diva. But with time, I learned people often find it easy to express judgement and knowing your boundaries doesn’t make you a bad person. We can’t please everyone all the time; sometimes we have to put ourselves first, and there’s nothing wrong with that. William: How do you keep your life in balance? Mimi Rose: I don’t. My personal life is my work life. Everything I feel either becomes inspiration for a song, or a music video. I also enjoy playing my musical instruments. That’s what happens when you’re in love. I’m romantically in love with music and art and it’s been that way all my life. l

serving you a drink at a bar and helping you find an apartment to rent, to now being the owner of that bar and a prosperous real estate firm. That doesn’t make me better than the bartender or the real estate agent; it just gives me more work, more responsibilities; hence, more dimensions. William: How important are craft, skill, and experience? Kyle: Craft and skill are something you can learn and develop. Experience comes with practice. You work hard to improve your skills, so you become better at your craft, and the more experienced you become, the more confident you are. Experience = confidence. I’ll never forget when I first got to New York, a well-established acting coach once said to me I had a a great deal of talent, but I have to work on my craft. I had no clue what that meant at the time, but I realized later what he meant was I was innately talented, but I needed to learn the craft.

retirement, jobs - the list goes on. What I liked the most about real estate back when I started was the flexibility. As I was running from audition to audition, I needed some money to sustain myself and a flexible schedule. That’s the beauty of it: you make your own hours. And then when I started making money, I realized what a great field real estate is. I’ve learned so much since I started my real estate career, and I’ve so many satisfactions on so many different levels, I don’t see any other industry giving me the same level of personal and professional satisfaction, other than acting, of course, which remains my biggest passion.

Hope is the wanting and believing in something that will happen, despite no certain proof that it will. It’s very close to the same definition of faith to me.

William: How important is trust? Kyle: I know trust is probably the most important thing in a working relationship. The need for trust is fundamental in any type of relationship; moreover, work related. And what I believe makes trust so important is when trust is lost, it’s very hard, almost impossible, to regain.

When it comes to me - you have my full trust - until you don’t. I’ll trust you, until you do something to prove that wrong. Once that happens it’s very hard to regain my trust. William: Tell me about you and real estate. Kyle: I love real estate. It’s something everyone you meet needs. It’s an essential need. Real estate is something everyone is involved in one way or another. You’re either a buyer or a seller, a renter or an owner. Real estate is shelter, freedom, wealth, income,

William: Many find being a restauranteur to be challenging. What are your experiences in the industry thus far? Kyle: I have to say it hasn’t been for me. The reason is I’ve gone into a partnership with someone who I know has a track record of great restaurants; (circling back to how important trust is); I didn’t want the responsibility of having to run the day to day dealings, but I have a partner I can trust fully with that.

William: What must be done to continue to appeal to the customer? Kyle: You always need to be thinking of your customer’s needs. If you work hard to meet and exceed their needs, they see that, and appreciate it, and they’ll bring you back more business in time. It’s also important to stay true to yourself. They see if you’re trying too hard to be, for them, someone you’re not. William: Do you look at acting and express, “This is what I’m born to do”? Kyle: I know every single time I’m on set I have this feeling like “I feel at home” Every time I’m on set I feel that “This is where I’m supposed to be”. I love everything about the production process. Everyone working together to get the job done on the highest level possible. So yes - I 100% believe acting is what “I’m born to do.” NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

I believe happiness is the true barometer to success. There’s no better feeling than feeling happy... Don’t compare yourself with anyone else, because you’ll fall into despair. But be your own competition. William: Where do you believe you are in terms of your sense of enthusiasm for acting? Kyle: Still very enthusiastic, but maybe less romantic about it than I used to be. Let me explain. I used to be more precious with acting, the craft, and everything that goes along with it. It’s almost like I wanted it too much if that makes sense. A few things happened that influenced my mentality toward acting right now - I read an inspirational book, got married, and had a kid. To put it in a few words, acting is playing pretend. I’d say with time, the romanticism of it was replaced with a more realistic feeling. However, the art of it and ability to make people live in someone else’s shoes for a short period of time is what is wonderful. As an actor - to wear different pairs of shoes and inhabit different lives, and have empathy for your fellow humans is amazing. Acting can touch someone at their core and change their life so that’s what I’m the most enthusiastic about. William: Do you enjoy the physicality of acting? Kyle: I do love the physicality of acting. It disappoints me this COVID-19 situation put a damper on the acting industry. It’s really hard to not have physicality when acting - to a certain extent at least. Even if you’re Matt Damon in The Martian, you still have contact with a lot of crew members. William: Are you comfortable with being uncomfortable and if so, how do you resolve discomfort? Kyle: I’m comfortable being uncomfortable. In fact, I’m uncomfortable being comfortable if that makes sense. No genius ideas were born in comfort zone. Major growth comes from new, challenging situations, and that’s where I thrive. If you can develop that muscle,

you’ll be comfortable with that feeling. Don’t get me wrong, I do; however, love a glass of great scotch, comfortable clothes, and a bit of television at the end of a long workday. William: Are you a big proponent of happiness? Kyle: Yes, I am. I believe happiness is the true barometer to success. There’s no better feeling than feeling happy. At the same time, I believe you should always be your biggest competition, just so you stay competitive and alert at any given time. Don’t compare yourself with anyone else, because you’ll fall into despair. But be your own competition. William: How much in control of your life have you been? Kyle: Until post college I didn’t feel much in control of my life maybe because I really wasn’t thinking about it. You can drift through life if you’re not careful. Everyone has control of their lives; they just might not realize it. But once you find your true calling, and you do what you really love, you become more in control of your life. How much in control of my life am I right now? 100%. William: Who, thus far, has had the most influence on your life? Kyle: My parents have always had the most influence on me. Fortunately, I’ve parents who trust me doing anything that makes me happy. So, I’m fortunate.

William: Has ambition always been a part of your psyche? Kyle: No. It hasn’t. Not until post college where I found myself wondering what my true calling was, and what I was put here on this earth to do. That is when my ambition started taking over. William: What is your definition of hope? Kyle: Hope is the wanting and believing in something that will happen, despite no certain proof that it will. It’s very close to the same definition of faith to me. William: What is the importance of hope? Kyle: Hope is what gets you out of bed early in the morning and springs you into action in doing whatever you are hoping to happen. If you’ve the hope and faith it’ll happen, you’ll be more inclined to do whatever it is you want to do. William: How have you opened your life for the good of others? Kyle: I’ve been offering my advice in acting, real estate, business tips, and more (the reason why I created my YouTube channel), I’ve built a business that offers my agents a source of income and stability for them and their families, I’ve donated and keep donating for various organizations, I offered my time, and volunteered. I think it’s important to give back to those who are in need. William: How important is it for you to use your life as an instrument to allow yourself to experience the vision the Creator would have for you? Kyle: I believe it’s important. There are many times you hear actors, or musicians, or athletes who get self-conscious when people praise them too much. I believe it’s because when they are truly connected - it really has nothing to do with them. You hear these people say they feel like it wasn’t them doing it - like it was just their body as an instrument, but they were connected to something bigger and it was almost effortless. I believe in that, and that is what I strive for in every creative endeavor. l NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

FROM BEDRIDDEN

TO IRONMAN: MY JOURNEY WITH CROHN’S DISEASE

HE WAS NEARING THE END OF THE RACE, BUT BRIAN GREENBERG THOUGHT HE COULDN’T POSSIBLY FINISH. HE HAD A STOMACH CRAMP AND HIS LUNGS WERE BEGGING HIM TO STOP.

A

t that point, he had done a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and was in the last leg of his 26.2-mile run. It had been over 15 hours, and he still had an hour of running to go. Pain. That’s what his entire body was screaming.

Just a few years earlier, Brian was experiencing a different type of pain. He could barely move without immense distress radiating from his abdomen. He was bedbound, living under the care of his parents, his days

punctuated by visits from a wound care nurse as his body tried to fight the symptoms of a badly inflamed gastrointestinal tract. For Brian, competing in the Ironman Mont Tremblant was an important personal milestone in what had been a 25+ year-long journey to outpace his Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Since he was 11 years old, Brian’s own body has rebelled against him, causing him to sit on the sidelines for much of his teenage and adult life. In less than a decade, Brian’s condition evolved from mild stomach cramping to rupturing rectal abscesses. At age 21, while most of his peers were enjoying the care-free college lifestyle, he had a large part of his colon removed. At 28, he agreed to a full colectomy, a surgical procedure to remove his entire colon. Like most people who self-reported living with Crohn’s disease (82%, according to an online survey presented by AbbVie),*1 Brian experienced feelings

of anxiety as a result of his disease. “Crohn’s impacts you emotionally in so many ways because there’s fear when you wake up and anxiety that you have every single day, not to mention the fatigue and pain that rear their heads every so often,” said Brian.

moderate-to-severe impact on their daily life, with most agreeing that their condition limits their ability to socialize (77%) and spend time outside their home (66%). Nearly half say their condition limits their ability to work full time (45%).1

In fact, according to recent online survey results, 70% of people living with Crohn’s disease report feeling embarrassment and 80% reported experiencing feelings of depression as a result of their disease.1

“Before my disease was controlled, if I go out and I’m far from home, I have to think, ‘Okay, well, what might happen?’” said Brian.

“The biggest misconception that the Crohn’s disease community has to overcome is that it’s just a ‘bathroom disease,’” said Brian, who remembers fearing how his condition would affect his romantic life as well as his social life. The physical and mental toll that Crohn’s disease takes on a person can impact day-to-day life. For example, 80% of patients from an online survey also reported that their Crohn’s disease symptoms had a

Doctors say open lines of communication with their patients are important to learn more about the emotional toll Crohn’s is having on their well-being as well as the specific ways in which the condition impacts everyday activities. “It’s important that people living with Crohn’s talk to their gastroenterologist and their healthcare team about both the physical and emotional impact of their disease, even more so during these times,” said survey researcher Laurie Keefer, Ph.D., director of the IBD Medical Home,

“Having Crohn’s disease has taught me that life is not going to be easy, but it’s what you make of it,” said Brian. “Not everyone dreams of becoming an Ironman. Find and set goals for yourself and set turtle steps along the way. Don’t be shy about sharing these with your healthcare team either. It’s when you’re working together and aligned on goals that the best decisions about your care can be made.” Understanding the wide-ranging implications of IBD can be the first step toward a proactive treatment plan that works for you. GRITT-IBD, at Mount Sinai. “This is so that doctors can understand and fully assess the extent of the disease so that they can treat patients appropriately.” For Brian, he credits setting what he calls “turtle steps,” having an open conversation with his healthcare team, and advocating for an effective treatment plan as key to his journey from being bedridden to reaching his athletic goals. His first “turtle step” goal was to make his own grilled cheese sandwich after one of his major surgeries. Soon, with hard work and planning, he was hiking, biking and climbing, training as a triathlete and completing a half Ironman. Finally, in 2018, with his then girlfriend - now, wife - cheering him on, Brian crossed the finish line of the 140.6-mile full Ironman at 16 hours and 13 minutes. Pain has momentarily given in to sheer, overwhelming euphoria.
