Village www.villagemarket-kenya.com HALLOWEEN FRIGHT NIGHT 26th October

Village Market is known for its epic Halloween parties. This year there were six of them, so party hopping was the name of the game! At the Rooftop, the little ghouls and boys frolicked at the Groovie Goolies party for kids and strutted their stuff in a fabulous costume fashion show. The Food Court came alive as people danced to the haunting rhythms of the Beathogs band. DJ Deshal brought the party to the Courtyard as he played wicked tunes and DJ ProtĂŠgĂŠ brought down the house at Ozone Trampoline Park. Under the Sea was not left behind with its Halloween Boo Bash. You would have definitely loved our Boo-ling Party at Village Bowl. Throughout the night, our fashion police identified the best costumes and awarded them with Titan watches from Sensations.

DIWALI

27th October Families came out to Village Market to celebrate Diwali in pomp and colour at the Food Court and Court Yard. The crowning jewel of the night was a dance performance by Action in Focus who dazzled the crowd with their bejewelled outfits and scintillating dance moves.

illage Market has lined up exciting community initiatives during this festive season. Village Market's Dream Big Scholarship fund will award 10 deserving scholars with KES 50,000 towards their schools fees. Participants must be learners aged 11 to 17 and submit a one-page essay with up to 1,200 words describing how they would use their education to impact and transform their community. The scholarship recipients will be announced in January 2020. In addition, we call on all our shoppers and friends to join our

Backpack Campaign, which entails filling and dropping off school backpacks with items such as books, stationery and toys. This is a fun activity that you can engage in with your children or learners – find our backpack Christmas donation boxes at either of the following locations: Foodcourt, Courtyard, Carrefour Area, Link Area next to Madora, next to Belladonna pharmacy and at Under The Sea and leave your filled backpacks which will be donated to schools and orphanages. This initiative is geared towards promoting education as it will ensure underprivileged children get to start the first day of school feeling confident and prepared to succeed academically.

ARTIST

Joseph Kimani aka Cartoon 28 November – 16 December Rooftop Gallery

Cartoon officially known as Joseph Kimani is no stranger in Nairobi’s art scene. Having been born and brought up in the rural area with rich memories about the social life of African women, his work features a rich array of the lifestyle of African women and their clothing that is full of motif patterns. The different colours on their faces have significant meaning as they portray overcoming tribalism and racism which is a social stigma in our contemporary society. Again the different colours on their faces reflects a variety of soil colours found in Africa. For example, yellow clay ochre and dark brown reflect the soil found in highland areas in Africa, which are rich for agriculture and livestock farming. In traditional African societies, women were given social responsibilities in their

feature

families and societies. They were involved in different types of trade like selling farm produce such as fruits, cassava, sweet potatoes as well as baskets for sale and storage of farm produce. In today’s contemporary society, there is still a large number of women involved in work life with young girls and women engaged in schools, colleges and office work. Inspite of the modern times, Cartoon believes that all is not lost and, as an artist and historian, he still has a lot in his memory of what used to happen in the olden days through stories told by his parents who are still alive as well as the history already stored in archives, schools and libraries. Cartoon is the perfect illustration of a modern African feminist man who believes and appreciates the contributions of an African woman to the African society. He concludes by quipping that his paintings reflect the complete African woman.

Patrick Imanjama

28 November – 16 December Rooftop Gallery Imanjama is a Tanzanian artist whose work is focused on children and the animal kingdom to promote love and peace. He views children and animals as symbols of peace as they are both innocent. He is dismayed that children and animals are not granted their full and equal rights and believes that if adults can torture and kill animals, they are also capable of doing the same to children. Imanjama likes to use colour to show the joy that can reside in children’s hearts as well as to enlighten minds through their eyes. Imanjama delights in the energy he gets when using his talent as an artist to illustrate the joy and peace that comes from children and animals. He hopes that his works bring joy to all who get to interact with it.

CHEF’S Pick CHRISTMAS SUGAR STAR COOKIES

METHOD:

INGREDIENTS:

1) Shift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl and set aside

3 and 3/4 cup plain flour

2) In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until soft and creamy. Add half the eggs and beat in. Now add remaining eggs and vanilla and beat until creamy and fluffy. Add the flour mixture and bring together into a dough with your hands 3) Flatten the dough into a round disc, wrap with cling film and chill in the fridge for 1.5 hours. Pre-heat the oven temperature to 180C and line baking trays with greaseproof paper. Roll out some of the dough into 1/4-inch thickness and using star shape cookie cutters (you can also use gingerbread man shape cookie cutter or Christmas tree shape). Cut out cookies, sprinkle with coloured sugar or you can leave them plain and place them on the baking tray. Repeat until all the dough is used

28

1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1 1/4 cup castor sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup butter, at room temperature FOR DECORATING: Red or green coloured decorating sugar or coloured icing up. Bake cookies for 9-10 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and cool cookies on wire racks till completely cold 4) If you didn't use coloured sugar, you can decorate them by using coloured icing once the cookies are cold.

WHITE CHOCOLATE CHRISTMAS BARK INGREDIENTS: 200g good quality white chocolate 150g dried cranberries 80g shelled pistachios, toasted and chopped METHOD: 1) Line a 9x12-inch baking sheet with foil paper, making sure you have a overlap of paper (for easy removal) 2) Break the chocolate into a heatproof glass bowl and place over a pan of simmering water. Stir the chocolate until it has melted and remove bowl from the heat. Immediately pour the melted chocolate over the foil paper lined tray and spread out 3) Sprinkle the cranberries over the melted chocolate, followed

by the chopped pistachios. The cranberries and pistachios will stick to the melted chocolate 4) Place the tray in the fridge for a few hours until set. Once set, snap the chocolate into pieces and place in a nice bowl for serving. You may make the bark a few days earlier and pack into an airtight container and keep in the fridge. NOTE: If you would like to make the bark for your children, you can use red and green sweets.

Metabolic BALANCE M

etabolic Balance® is a scientifically researched nutrition programme from Germany which has been clinically shown to reduce not only obesity but also regulate hormones, the digestive system, allergies and migraine headaches. It has been shown to improve sleep, reduce joint pain and achieve better sugar control. It reverses metabolic syndrome*. The Metabolic Balance® Programme is now being used by Dr. Khoda in a medically supervised programme to help with hypertension, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, eczema control and premenstrual headaches, amongst many other life style related conditions. In many cases, Dr. Khoda has been able to stop certain medications and achieve the desired results. This nutrition programme is not a diet

32

– it is based on individual metabolic rates and body composition and has proven results such as guaranteed weight loss that stays off. Each plan is unique and suited to a specific individual. The programme will show one exactly what they should be eating, to maintain the optimal metabolism, hormone and enzyme levels.

THE PROGRAMME Metabolic Balance® programme requires blood tests to be done on an empty stomach (fasting for 10-12 hours), where 33 different parameters are checked and used to create your individual nutrition plan. The programme has four phases which can take just three months to reach and can also be continued for up to two years. Dr. Khoda is currently the only doctor in East Africa who is a Metabolic Balance® coach, and is using this programme to improve lives.
