HISTORY OF BROWN MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH In 1916 the concept of Brown Memorial Baptist Church became the passion of seven former members of Berean Baptist Church, naming the Church after the late Rev. Leonard Joseph Brown, a former pastor of Berean Baptist Church. After a series of planning meetings, this founding group rented a store located at 1648 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York, to hold worship services for a growing number of members. The first minister to serve Brown Memorial was Rev. John T. Price. Rev. Price served for nearly three years, establishing both a trustee board and deacon board and raising $1,500 toward building a new church. From 1921 to 1923, Rev. J. D. Gordon of California served as pastor. Under his pastorate, the membership grew and the Church purchased property at 629-631 Herkimer Street for the sole purpose of building a larger church. On May 14, 1921, the Church broke ground, and on March 22, 1922, Supreme Lodge Knights of Pythians laid the cornerstone. Brown Memorial Baptist Church was dedicated on March 25, 1922, holding its first service on Sunday, April 4, 1922. After the resignation of Rev. J. D. Gordon in 1923, Rev. George Granby served three years as interim pastor. In 1926, Rev. Porter W. Phillips was called to pastor Brown Memorial Baptist Church. Under Rev. Porter’s twelve-year leadership, the Church grew in membership, as well as finances. On July 5, 1938, Rev. George W. Thomas was unanimously called to the pastorate of Brown Memorial Baptist Church. As the membership rapidly grew, it became apparent that much larger quarters were necessary, and in 1958 the Church purchased its present home for the cash price of $80,000, 484 Washington Avenue, a building erected in 1860 for the Washington Avenue Baptist Church Under Rev. Thomas, major renovations were completed and additional property was purchased for $52,000 for the purpose of building an education and recreational facility. The long and rewarding spiritual leadership of Rev. George W. Thomas regrettably ended with his passing on January 10, 1973. On February 5, 1974, the Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin was called to pastor Brown Memorial Baptist Church. Under the pastorate of Reverend Austin, the Church moved forward spiritually, spreading its wings nationally and internationally. Rev. Austin distinguished himself by serving as President of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and as President, Empire Missionary Baptist Convention of New York Incorporated. He organized the Church’s Missionary Society, the Christian Education Department, and the Youth Department. Under the Tutelage of Rev. Austin, two Associate Ministers (Rev. Isaac Crawford and Rev. Jerome Cunningham) were ordained and because pastors of their own Churches. Rev. Austin’s major plan included the construction of a community center adjacent to the

Church. On November 17, 1991, the Church broke ground for the center, but construction was halted because of contractual problems. Rev. Austin passed away on January 23, 1998 before the center was completed. After a year long mourning period and an extensive pastoral search, on September 16, 2000, the Lord answered our prayers and sent us an under shepherd, the Rev. Clinton M. Miller. On October 18, 2000, Rev. Miller preached his first sermon as the newly elected pastor. On March 19, 2001, Rev. Devore Chapman, Moderator of Eastern Baptist Association, duly installed Rev. Clinton M. Miller as pastor. Under Rev. Miller’s dynamic leadership, the membership is growing spiritually and exponentially. Through the spiritual and administrative efforts of Reverend Miller, we have completed the construction of the Brown Memorial Fellowship Hall and are working toward the completion of major renovations of our main edifice, including the restoration of our unique stained glass windows. We have enhanced our community outreach programs, including our Ministry In Action athletic program and Youth Ministry. Our Bible Study program has been expanded to include Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening sessions and a Monday evening Men’s Bible Study, and a monthly Women’s Bible Study. A new sound system was installed enabling the initiation of a tape ministry as a special outreach to our sick and homebound members. Our music ministry has added a Young Adult Choir and a Young People’s Choir to complement our traditional Mass Chouhhir, Cathedral Choir, Gospel Chorus and Samuel Austin Male Chorus. We have also established MLK after school program to cultivate the educational skills and knowledge of our children and the Clinton M. Miller Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance for our college bound students. Rev. Miller’s vision for Brown Memorial includes an expanded Christian Education Department offering a series of spiritual enrichment courses, a nursery, a summer Vacation Bible School and a Community Development Corporation. Two major accomplishments were completed under the leadership of Pastor Miller: 1) In 2003, completed the construction of the Fellowship Hall with an industrial kitchen and bathrooms and 2) In 2012, completed the restoration of Church’s sanctuary to its original appearance and luster. Committed to making Brown Memorial Baptist Church an institution for all community members, Rev. Miller is very active in the educational, social and political dynamics of the community. He firmly believes that a community will not grow spiritually or economically if the church does not play an integral part in its development.

ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE STRUCTURE:

BROWN MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH

(Originally known as the Washington Avenue Baptist Church)

Originally constructed in 1860 as the Washington Avenue Baptist church, the church is located within the Clinton Hill Historic Districts (New York State/National Registers and New York City). Designed by architect Ebenezer Roberts, it is considered a fine example of an architectural style from the Early Romanesque Revival. (In America an early Romanesque Revival took place between 1840 – 1850, followed by a second revival between 1870 – 1900). This distinct structure, with thick walls and concrete ceilings, contains ornate features and 12 Tiffany stained glass windows, including two extraordinary windows depicting “The Pilgrims” and “The Resurrection.” This Romanesque architectural structure is an imposing and majestic structure, dominating the landscape and skyline. Its sanctuary consists of a central nave flanked by two towers on the front (east) elevation and a transept on the west elevation. Adjacent to the sanctuary on the west is the Parish Hall, which contains offices and ancillary spaces. Charles Pratt of Astral Oil worshipped here and his appreciation of the building may have led to his commission of Roberts to design the Pratt Mansion located at 23 Clinton Avenue and the chapel at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Lafayette Avenue. Typical of Romanesque architecture, the structure’s east façade consists of a center bay, which is the gable end of the church nave, flanked by two square towers. The façade is typically painted brick with sandstone trim. The foundation walls are of coursed granite capped by a sandstone water table. The lower part of the center bay has a projecting main entrance portico articulated by sandstone arches, columns and trim. The upper part of the façade has an arched stained glass window topped by a series of corbelled and arched brick. The north east tower, the tallest element in the church complex houses a secondary entrance at the lower level. Originally the bell tower, it is divide into three tiers featuring louvered arch openings, and is topped by a crenellated parapet. The base of former pinnacles remains at each corner of the tower. The south east tower originally had a steep pyramid roof, which no longer exists. The existing tower terminates in a flat roof with a bank of wood cornice trim. The north façade consists of the north east tower, the nave sidewall, and the gabled ends of the transept, and the parish house, each flanked by turrets. The Sanctuary is highly ornamented with vaulted plaster ceilings featuring decorative medallions and decorated plaster walls with extensive stained glass windows, including a large arched stained glass window at the transept façade designed by Tiffany Studios. From the attic over the sanctuary aisles are skylight openings. From its construct in 1860 until 2002, this Romanesque jewel never had any major reconstruction or renovation. A major project was undertaken in 2002 for the purpose of preserving and restoring this critically-threatened historic church. Deteriorated conditions of its roof, masonry and facades, windows and doors and associated church structures threatened the structure’s stability. The overall goals of the project, funded through a matching State grant, was to rehabilitate the building and site, to obtain a weatherproof exterior envelope, to make the building safe for occupancy, to upgrade the building systems and to restore the integrity of the historic fabric. The first-priority items as outlined in a 2002 Conditions Survey report included roof replacement, pinnacles restoration, installation

of flashing and functioning drainage systems, masonry and façade repairs and exterior fire stair replacement. All work undertaken was to meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. This first restoration phase of the exterior of this historic property was completed in 2004 The next phase for restoring this Romanesque historic property is to address its interior deterioration. Funding of $5.2 million is needed to proceed with this historic preservation and restoration. The following four approaches detail the necessary scope of work. 1. Sanctuary and Narthex: Restoration of interior plaster wall and ceiling finishes Installation of full scaffolding in the Sanctuary, Temporary removal and storage of organ pipes during construction, c. Stabilization of existing plaster and repair of damaged plaster, Patching of plaster damaged by other restoration work, Painting and re-finishing of all plaster, Re-installation of organ pipes, Millwork repair and refinishing, Alternates for Altar: Mural and mosaic conservation 2. Sanctuary: Installation of new lighting Installation of new chandeliers, sconces and supplementary lighting, and lighting controls, Installation of new emergency lighting, Installation of new exit lighting. Installation of new electric winches to lower chandeliers for re-lamping 3. Sanctuary: Installation of new air conditioning system Installation of new air conditioning equipment, ductwork, controls, grilles, etc.; Excavation of partial cellar floor area to accommodate a new mechanical equipment room and access hallways, Removal of existing column piers and reframing of supports for Sanctuary floor, Installation of new concrete retaining walls and foundations at the cellar, Installation of mechanical equipment at the Tower and Parish Hall, Installation of steel dunnage to support mechanical equipment at the Tower and Parish Hall, Restoration of existing wood louvers at Tower, Installation of grilles below and in pews 4. Church and Parish Hall: New electric service to accommodate additional electrical load, At Parish Hall: Rewiring of existing electrical outlets, lighting and switches and installation of new outlets, At Sanctuary: Rewiring of existing electrical outlets and installation of new outlets, wiring for new lighting and audio-visuals, and new switches, At Sanctuary: Installation of new emergency lighting and exit lighting. Sanctuary Restoration Completion After beginning the process of restoring the sanctuary in 2007, it was not until February 2012- that the renovation of the sanctuary was completed. The restoration included plaster restoration and decorative plaster painting at the Sanctuary and Narthex, new lighting and rewiring of Church and Parish Hall, restoration of pews, new carpet, sanctuary made wheel- chair accessible

HISTORY OF WASHINGTON AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH The Washington Avenue Baptist Church had very humble beginnings. Its inception manifested itself in the heart and mind of Deacon J. Hepburn Clark. Having moved to this vicinity, then in the outskirts of the city, he ascertained that there were quite a number of Baptists residing in the neighborhood, while the nearest church of the denomination was considerably over a mile distant. Availing himself, therefore, of what seemed to be a favorable opportunity to begin a new Baptist church, he, in connection with Mr. Holbrook Chamberlain, of the Strong Place Baptist Church, instituted devotional meetings at his own house, which were continued every Sabbath evening for several months. Early in 1851, the brethren who had become interested in the movement were determined to organize a church and erect a meeting house. Accordingly, a committee, consisting of John H. Clark, J. G. Gilbert and J. 0. Whitehouse, in March of that year, purchased lots for that purpose upon Clinton Avenue, south of De Kalb Avenue, but not being fully satisfied with the title to the property, it was finally relinquished. About this time, an opportunity offered to purchase the property of a Dutch Reformed Church, which had started an enterprise but was unable to carry through, upon the corner of Washington and Gates avenues.

December 11, 1856. During his pastorate, occurred the great revival of 1857-8, as the results of which ninety-one members were received by this church, by baptism. Up to this time the congregation had worshiped in the frame lecture room originally purchased, but new and larger accommodations were now needed, and a church edifice was, therefore, erected adjoining the lecture room, which was dedicated in February, 1860. Mr. Anable resigned his charge November, 1, 1862, at which time the membership numbered two hundred and six. On the 1st of March 1864, the Rev. David Moore, Jr., of Buffalo, N. Y., assumed the pastorate. In May, 1865, the old lecture room was taken down and in its place was erected, under the superintendence of architect Ebenezer L. Roberts a chapel, combining Sabbath school room, church, parlor, and other rooms, which for beauty, convenience and adaptedness to its purpose, has been considered without a superior in the country. Under Mr. Moore’s ministrations this church had grown rapidly in numbers and influence. In four years, one hundred and sixty converts were received by baptism, and the church increased from one hundred and ninety-seven to four hundred and eighty-two members. The whole number added by baptism, since the organization of the church, was three hundred and thirteen members. In the summer of 1867, the increasing demand for sittings in the This property, consisting of eight or nine lots of land, with church necessitated the addition of galleries to the audience a front of one hundred and three feet on Washington and room, which had previously had only an organ loft. These Hamilton Avenues, and two hundred and thirteen feet on were erected and added materially to the beauty, as well as Gates avenue, with a frame lecture room and the foundations the capacity of the church edifice. of a church edifice, was secured for the sum of $7,000, and the lecture room, under the new auspices, was opened for In 1872 A number of WABC members formed the Marcy divine worship, on Sunday, November 23d, 1851, and a Avenue Baptist Church. Pastor Clinton M. Miller To the Brown Memorial Baptist Church Family. Congratulations! God has allowed us to make it over 100 years. It’s exciting to know that through God’s goodness that we’re proud and privileged to be a part of a once in a lifetime event. As we move through our centennial, God continues to maintain, nurture and watch over our ministry. Throughout all the changes in our society and our city, we will remain consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our purpose remains the same. Going forward, we may do things differently, but our purpose remains the same: To worship God and to serve God’s people. If we do that, regardless of any societal shifts, our institutional ministry will remain relevant for years to come. This celebration will have different meanings for many of us. Consider all of the people, the families, events and celebrations that have come through and happened in our church for the last 100 years. The work of those who have come before us has paid off tremendously. It’s important to know that what we are doing will fuel this ministry for decades to come. It’s our turn to move the ministry forward! Our celebration will continue far beyond our church anniversary. Now, we celebrate through the activities of more ministry projects, efficient administration and community involvement. I believe that as we do God’s work, we will be blessed with resources, enabling us to reach even more milestones in the life of our church. Thank you to all of our members and friends who have been integral sources of support throughout the years. To the Steering Committee, Sub committees and Chairs, thank you for staying with the task that was put before you. Let’s celebrate. A new phase of church life and discipleship begins. I hope all of you join me as we begin anew with “Brown 101”. May the Lord bless us as we march ahead “doing justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with our God”. Happy 100th. Stay close to Jesus

Rev. Clinton Miller

Lenny Green Mr. Quiet Storm of 107.5 FM WBLS

It’s his voice, that unmistakable deep, rich sound. With a vocal tone and smooth delivery that could melt glaciers, Lenny Green was destined for stardom. The host of the syndicated radio show “The Quiet Storm with Lenny Green,” Lenny makes his home at the show’s flagship station, the highly rated Tri-state (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) radio station WBLS/107.5-FM. Recently syndicated by SupeRadio, Lenny’s weekday 7:00 pm to 12:00 midnight show will soon blossom out to be heard in cities across the United States. Lenny Green is the undisputed master of creating a relaxed, romantic atmosphere for his listeners, while playing the best variety of old school and today’s R&B music, to ease them into unwinding after their stress-filled days. He sets THE MOOD unlike anyone else. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Green grew up singing around the house with his mother and brother, with an appreciation of the R&B, hip-hop, jazz and gospel sounds. At the age of twelve, he made his public singing debut at the World Famous Apollo Theatre’s Amateur Night, as the lead singer of his teenage R&B trio. They won second place, leading to many paid engagements throughout New York City. Later, as a student at Kingsborough Community College, he set his sights on radio, studying Broadcast Communications there, becoming an in-demand voice, both on campus and regionally. Green began his radio career as many do, outside of his home market, as an on-air personality in Richmond, VA. Later, he was morning/midday man and eventually evening host, while also holding down the Music Director spot, at WNHC-AM Radio in New Haven, CT, as he worked his way back toward home. He made waves within Connecticut, receiving the most listened to air shift award at the only 24 hour commercial station in the state. Connecticut music listeners voted Lenny as their favorite radio host and honored him with an on-air proclamation from New Haven Mayor John C. Daniels. He is also the recipient of Billboard Magazine’s “Air Personality of the Year” Award, an honor given to him by his peers in the radio/music industry. In 1995, Lenny joined the WRKS/98.7 KISS-FM family as Part-time Personality and then rose to Assistant Program Director and Host of the popular Love Show, Kissing After Dark with Lenny Green, where he remained until the recent elimination of KISS-FM in 2012, now Lenny has become a syndicated on-air personality. Over the years, Lenny has interviewed a veritable Who’s Who of celebrities from music, film, theater and the like, including Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Tyrese, Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole, Ashford and Simpson, Lionel Richie, Jay-Z, Smokey Robinson, the late great Barry White & Gerald Levert, as well as countless other A-list names. Green helped organize and develop an artist management/event marketing company, High End Entertainment, because he believes in not only helping others, but wants to assist in developing the next generation of superstars. Although on urban stations across the country, evening slow jam broadcasts are traditionally Quiet Storm shows, anyone can hear that there’s definitely no need for quiet – the Perfect Storm sounds like Lenny Green.

Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to send greetings to all those celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Brown Memorial Baptist Church at tonight’s banquet. New York City’s churches, mosques, synagogues and temples have long been crucial parts of the fabric that unites our communities and brings our residents together for fellowship and worship. For a century, Brown Memorial Baptist Church has provided a spiritual home in Brooklyn, serving as a steadfast source of support for the borough and far beyond. This congregation has uplifted countless New Yorkers and has strengthened the foundation of its neighborhood with a commitment to ministry and service. As we reflect on the legacy of this church and honor this incredible milestone in its history, I look forward to the many years of faith and growth that lie ahead as you continue to build a better and brighter future for our city. On behalf of the City of New York, congratulations to tonight’s honorees. Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful centennial anniversary celebration and continued success.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio Mayor

We, the Sunday School Department, praise God for allowing us to see Brown Memorial’s 100th year. We are humbled by His most excellent display of grace and pray that this house and our service continues to teach and lead every soul that enters our doors to Christ.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
