1. Deciding to renovate your home can be daunting, even having new windows and doors can prove tricky when finding the ideal company to carry out your work. At Select, Terry and his family strive to use their years of knowledge and experience to ensure the whole process is carried out professionally using carefully selected products. I visited Terry at the Select Home Improvements showroom where we had a chat about the business and his long career in the industry.

A family run, local business from 1974, want to know more?

01246 822 882 07816 297 455

Kym Bellringer

Freelance Journalist

Terry, thank you for meeting with me. So, have you always been in the home improvement trade? All my working life, I started working as an apprentice pattern maker within the joinery industry, I then began working with my dad in the building industry developing new buildings. The business we have now is coming up to its 43rd Birthday and is run by myself, my brother, my son and my son-in-law. This industry has always been in my blood and our passion shows throughout the work we provide.

2.

Do you have a speciality service you provide? When it comes to speciality services my workers are trained to the same standard I was when I began my journey in this industry, they are trained to high spec in all services across the board therefore all are a speciality.

3.

Do you feel the Home Improvement industry, like many industries in this era, must keep up to date with new trends? How do you tackle this? Trends are something which come full circle as the years go by. At the beginning of my career simple and easy to maintain was best fitted, now people are matching their home renovations to their personality as opposed to the style of the house, which I think is great as it shows creativity, for example a Victorian house could still hold all its architecture on the front, but be completely modernised inside. We ensure our products are updated regularly to fit the ever-changing trends.

4.

Your testimonials speak volumes about the fantastic service you provide! How do you maintain this level of customer service? Many of the clientele we hold now have been with us from the beginning, they have seen 2 or 3 ten year warranties and consider us for future work, because we have a loyal customer base, our testimonials speak volumes. We ensure thorough inspections at the end of each job are carried out, mostly by myself, there are few more critical than me. We are trustworthy and ensure all work is carried out with the upmost professionalism, making the customer happy and having a perfect finish to a service are our priorities.

5.

Would you describe yourself as a community man? I have lived in the community all my life and enjoy providing services for Bolsover District. Before becoming a sole family run business, we made sure we employed local people, many have worked with us until retirement.

Top 10 Safe Computing Tips This is a list of tips to keep your computer's security tight. If you have not followed some of these tips before, this information can function as a security checklist.

1: Patch, Patch, PATCH! Set up your computer for automatic software and operating system updates. An unpatched machine is more likely to have software vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

6: Use email and the internet safely. Ignore unsolicited emails, and be wary of attachments, links and forms in emails that come from people you don’t know, or which seem “phishy.” Avoid untrustworthy (often free) downloads from freeware or shareware sites.

2: Install protective software. Sophos is available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux. When installed, the software should be set to scan your files and update your virus definitions on a regular basis.

3: Backup, Backup, BACKUP! Backing up your machine regularly can protect you from the unexpected. Keep a few months’ worth of backups and make sure the files can be retrieved if needed.

7: Use secure connections. When connected to the internet, your data can be vulnerable while in transit. Use remote connectivity and secure file transfer options when off campus.

8: Choose strong passwords. Choose strong passwords with letters, numbers, and special characters to create a mental image or an acronym that is easy for you to remember. Create a different password for each important account, and change passwords regularly.

4: Protect sensitive data. Reduce the risk of identity theft. Securely remove sensitive data files from your hard drive, which is also recommended when recycling or repurposing your computer. Use the encryption tools built into your operating system to protect sensitive files you need to retain.

9: Control access to your machine. Don’t leave your computer in an unsecured area, or unattended and logged on, especially in public places. This includes Athena clusters and Quickstations. The physical security of your machine is just as important as its technical security.

5: Use desktop firewalls. Macintosh and Windows computers have basic desktop firewalls as part of their operating systems. When set up properly, these firewalls protect your computer files from being scanned.

16

10: Most importantly, stay informed. Stay current with the latest developments for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix systems.

3. CHOOSE A CHICKEN HOUSE There is a wide selection of styles and prices – research thoroughly to avoid costly mistakes. A chicken’s basic needs are for a secure, weatherproof house, with perches for roosting and nest-boxes for eggs. A human’s basic needs are for a coop with easy access, especially when it comes to cleaning it out. Check the following: • The house and run must be robust enough to keep out the large and powerful, as well as the small and lithe. Chicken wire is only proof against chickens! • Good insulation and ventilation are essential. • There should be 25-30cm of perch for each averagesized chicken. • At least one square metre of run space per chicken is required – double that is preferable. A raised house allows chickens to use the area underneath. • Moveable housing should be easy to manoeuvre. Wheels are normally required for this. • Be careful of second-hand housing, which may contain dormant parasites such as red mite.

4. SELECT A BREED Chickens come in a vast assortment of shapes, sizes and characters. All of them lay eggs, but productivity varies enormously. Again it’s worth doing some research to find the right chicken for you. Will you keep traditional, pure-breed hens (some are very beautiful or unusual) or modern hybrids, developed for maximum output? Decide whether your main aim is eggs, meat, children’s pets, an attractive addition to the garden – or all of these. Some chickens are all-rounders, and some are specialists.

5. GET THE KIT

LOOKING AFTER CHICKENS, EASY STEPS TO GETTING STARTED Chickens are fairly easy to look after, but like all animals they still need care and consideration. Follow these ten steps and you’ll soon be collecting eggs from your own happy hens!

1. FIND OUT WHETHER YOU CAN KEEP CHICKENS First, you need to make sure there are no clauses in your house deeds, rental agreement or in local bye-laws against keeping animals. Also consider your lifestyle, and whether you’ll have time to look after chickens properly. Don’t forget that you will need to make arrangements for their care when you are away from home.

2. DECIDE HOW YOU WILL KEEP YOUR CHICKENS Chickens destroy a patch of ground very quickly – a traditional chicken run soon becomes a muddy, disease-ridden eyesore. This can be avoided by: • Dividing the run into two, allowing each half to be rested alternately. • Using a moveable chicken-house and run. • Covering the surface of a small run with a thick layer of scratching material (i.e. hardwood chips) that can be cleaned and replaced regularly. • Letting the chickens free-range – although they will do some damage to the garden, and may need protection from dogs and predators. Electric poultry netting is effective in securing chickens. • Overcrowding causes stress-related problems and sickness. If space is tight, keep just two or three hens and give them us much room as you can. 18

Apart from the chickens and their house, you will need some basic equipment: • Buy a well-designed feeder to keep feed dry and prevent waste. • A purpose-made drinker helps in providing constant, clean water. • Obtain a dry, vermin proof-container for storing feed. • Acquire a shovel, bucket and stiff brush for cleaningout duties – a scraper is useful too. Poultry Shield is a detergent cleaner that can be used inside the chicken house and also removes red mite, a very common parasite. • Provide a dust-bath. A plastic box filled with fine soil or play sand will do the job. • Poultry supply stores offer a tempting range of items, and quality varies. The cheapest can sometimes prove false economy so shop around carefully.

6. PURCHASE SOME FEED

9. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CHICKENS

It is now illegal in the UK to feed chickens with anything that has been prepared in a kitchen. Manufactured chicken feed usually comes as pellets or mash, and will provide your chickens with a balanced diet. Corn is an extra treat – feed sparingly in the afternoons so the chickens eat their main rations first. Chickens swallow little stones to break down their food. Supply a dish of flint grit (also called insoluble grit) so your chickens can help themselves to what they need. Chickens with no access to grass will appreciate some green vegetables – hang these up to avoid them being trampled and to provide a distraction. If you hang them slightly above their reach, they will jump for them getting some valuable exercise too!

Let your chickens out each morning, give them food and water, and check they are all in good health. Keep an eye on the drinker in very hot or freezing weather. A laying hen needs about 500ml a day. In the evening, collect eggs, clear away food and shut the chickens into their house – they don’t eat or drink when roosting. Chickens go to roost at dusk. This could be mid-afternoon in winter or late at night in high summer. If you are unable to be at home to shut them into their house, it’s worth installing an automatic door closer to keep them safe from predators. Clean out the coop at least once a week. Remove bedding and scrape out droppings. Put down fresh bedding. In fine weather give the house an occasional scrub with poultry disinfectant. When cleaning the house, check for any evidence of red mite (little heaps of grey dust around the ends of the perches and small grey or red mites hidden beneath them). This parasite can debilitate or kill chickens, so act quickly at the first sign of them. Green algae is poisonous to chickens, so keep the drinker clean – and give the feeder a regular wash too. A small fixed run will also need frequent cleaning and maintenance. Shift moveable runs as often as necessary. Keep ensuring everything remains weather and predator-proof. Are there any signs of tunnelling or gnawing around the house or run? Deal with repairs quickly, before they become a problem. It’s important to establish a worming regime. (Flubenvet has no egg withdrawal period if given according to the instructions) and to frequently check that every bird is healthy and free from parasites. Chickens are good at hiding illness, so it’s up to the owner to keep an eye on them. Get to know your chickens so you will quickly notice if anything is wrong.

7. CHOOSE THE BEDDING Spread a layer of dust-free, absorbent bedding over the floor of the henhouse to help with cleaning and add insulation. Soft bedding material is also needed for the nest-boxes. Dust-extracted shavings are a popular choice, but there are several other options. Avoid hay or wood bark as they can harbour harmful moulds and spores. Straw tends to be dusty – dust-extracted chopped straw is sold for poultry.

8. BUY YOUR CHICKENS! Most popular pure-breeds have dedicated clubs (often with websites), and will help with finding a breeder. Hybrid hens may be bought from suppliers or breeders and many advertise on-line. There are also several organisations dedicated to re-homing ex-battery hens. Buying from auctions or markets can be risky! If you go down this route, go to a well organised auction where there is a vet checking the birds for good health. Look around carefully when visiting your intended supplier. The birds should be kept in clean, spacious conditions. Do they look healthy – alert and brighteyed? Be wary if any chickens are hunched and miserable, as this is a sign of sickness. The supplier should be happy to give advice, and to take back any birds that prove unhealthy after a few days. Be prepared to wait for a popular breed or hybrid to become available – short-cuts can lead to sickly chickens! Keep the chickens’ transfer to their new home as calm as possible. Make sure they travel comfortably and don’t get overheated. Have everything ready, and shut them into their house for a few hours so they can settle down quietly (don’t forget to provide food and water).

Let your little ones discover a new adventure each week this summer at Bolsover Castle. Summer holiday kids activities kick off 24-28 July with ‘Knights & Princesses’ where they’re taught how to bow and curtsey and put on a right royal welcome; quickly followed by ‘Medieval Mayhem’ 31 July - 4 August where they can travel back in time to Medieval days, enjoying fantastic storytelling and learning a few jokes. 7 – 11 August brings ‘Roundheads & Cavaliers’ where little ones can pick up a pint-sized pike and advance in a battle drill – becoming either a royalist or a parliamentarian; followed by ‘Heroes & Villains’ 14-18 August where kids will hear secret stories and uncover colourful characters from the past. Finally they can revel in a real castle caper at ‘Castle Attack’ 21-25 August where mini trebuchets are set up for kids to fire mini boulders at a mini castle! It may be mini but it’s massive fun!

Don’t forget the big event – Bolsover Castle’s ‘Grand Medieval Joust’ on the August bank holiday, Sun 27-Mon 28 August. Feel the heat of the contest as magnificent knights on horseback clash at the greatest event of medieval England. Cheer on your favourite in this thundering battle of bravery and honour. WHAT TO DO IN THE FLOWER GARDEN IN AUGUST • Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well. • Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. • Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. • Dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self-seeding and to encourage further flowering into the autumn. • Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. • Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy. • As your Penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers. • Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. • Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. • Prune your Wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). • Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them). • Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. • Take cuttings of your favourite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to propagate them for next year. • Finish dividing clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. • Now is a good time to spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller as the plant has lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it.

34

VEGETABLE GARDEN • Water your vegetable plants and fruit plants daily in warm weather. • Water sweetcorn plants regularly now and feed with tomato food to get the best cobs. • Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers & cucumber. • Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air cirulation and prevent disease. • Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant. • Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the frost. • Thin parsley to 25cm between plants so it can establish a good root system before winter. • Pinch out the tips of your runner bean plants once they reach the top of their support. This encourages side-shooting and more beans at a manageable height for picking. • If you’re growing courgettes pinch out the growing tip once they have 5 or 6 fruits. Pick fruits while they are young and shiny. • Limit the fruits on a squash plant to about three, but make sure these fruits are established before pinching out the surplus. • Spring-sown carrots and beetroot will be ready to harvest now although they can be left in the ground to keep growing. • Start harvesting your maincrop potatoes as the leaves yellow and die back. Try storing your potatoes in hessian sacks which exclude light but allow adequate ventilation. • Sweetcorn is ready when you can pop a corn with your thumbnail and the juices are milky. • Lift and dry onions, shallots and garlic once the foliage has flopped over and yellowed. Store them in onion bags to

prevent moulds developing. • Harvest french and runner beans little and often to prevent them from setting seed. • Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing pods. Leaving mature pods to set seed can prevent further flowers developing and reduce your crop. • Keep harvesting courgettes before they get too big! • Take cuttings of herbs such as rosemary, sage or mint now to bulk up supplies. Put cuttings in moist, welldrained potting compost (one part grit to one part compost) and place in a cold frame. • On a dry sunny day, collect seeds of herbs such as dill, fennel, caraway and chervil and dry in a warm spot out of direct sunlight. Chervil must be sown immediately. • Keep an eye out for potato and tomato blight and remove and destroy any affected plants immediately to prevent its spread. Read our ‘How to stop blight’ guide for more information • Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves and squash any that you find. Alternatively use nematodes to kill the caterpillars. • Clear away any diseased and spent foliage on and around your veg plants to discourage pests and diseases spreading. • Keep on top of weeds as they compete with your crops for nutrients and water. FRUIT GARDEN • If you have plants fruiting in containers, make sure you give them a high potash liquid feed to keep plants healthy and productive. • Remember to feed your lemon tree (and other citrus fruit trees) throughout summer with a special citrus fertiliser. • Plant out any rooted runners of strawberries for a good crop next year. • Keep birds and squirrels off your berries with netting or old net curtains. • Protect your crops with a bird scarer made from CDs tied to strings. • Harvest your fruit trees - cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines and apricots should all be ripe now! Early varieties of apple trees will be ready towards the end of the month. • If you have a glut of autumn raspberries, blackberries or loganberries, freeze them on trays for a couple of hours and then bag them up to use over winter. • Tidy up strawberry plants and remove any old straw from around the plants to improve ventilation and reduce the risk of pests and diseases. • Prune the fruited stems of your blackcurrant bushes after harvesting. • Cut back the fruited canes of your summer raspberries, leaving the new green canes for next year?s crop. Tie in next year’s raspberry canes to support wires or fencing.

IN THE GREENHOUSE • Check plants daily and water them if the soil is dry. • Damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity and deter red spider mites. • Open vents and doors on warm days. • Use blinds or apply shade paint to prevent the greenhouse from over-heating in sunny weather. • Try hanging sticky traps to catch flying pests and help determine which pest control is needed. • Tidy up fallen leaves and flowers to discourage disease.

GARDENING TIP Looking after your lawn. Don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rains will soon make it green again.

CONSERVATORY IDEAS Searching for conservatory ideas? Filled with light and offering a safe connection to the outside world, a conservatory is a lovely way to add space to your home. It’s a room designed for pleasure, where you can make the most of the early morning sun or draw down the conservatory blinds at night to listen to the rain from a cosy armchair. No longer the draughty, single-glazed flimsy constructions that were freezing in the winter and melting hot in the summer, modern conservatories are superbly insulated, secure and come in a huge range of designs. Whether you dream of a pitched conservatory roof or seamless bifold doors that remove the barrier between house and garden, the modular nature of conservatory design means that it’s fairly straightforward to create a bespoke solution for your space. Create an inviting living space in your conservatory or orangery with clever conservatory furniture, paint and accessories. A conservatory need not be dull, and should certainly not be an afterthought. Use colours from the same palette for a look that reflects nature in its truest form, or be daring with bold, brazen colour for a scheme that screams ‘look at me’. Maximise the outdoor feel with lashings of fresh foliage and fauna. Include clippings of everything you love, from materials to quirky curios. But most importantly, don’t forget to have fun.

CREATE THE PERFECT RETREAT WITH RELAXED SEATING A stylish swing seat is the perfect reading spot, whatever the weather! Complete the look with meadow-inspired cushions and throws.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN Create a tranquil fresh feel in your conservatory with botanical prints in leafy greens teamed with shades of white for a light and natural look.

IT’S ALL IN THE PLANTS… Fill your conservatory with a variety of exotic plants. Go for ones with a structural shape and brighten any empty corners with tall plants that will reach to the ceiling. DISCOVER RIBER Riber Castle Riber Castle is a 19th-century Grade II listed country house in the hamlet of Riber on a hill overlooking Matlock, Derbyshire. Known locally as “Smedley’s Folly” because of the difficulty of getting water to the hill summit, it was built by the industrialist John Smedley in 1862 as his private home. His wife lived in it until her death. It is built of gritstone from a local quarry (Derbyshire is well known for its quarrying) which was pulled up the 200-metre (660 ft) hill by a series of pulleys. After the death of Smedley’s wife, the castle became a boys’ school until this became financially unsustainable in the 1930s. With the coming of World War II the Ministry of Defence used the site for storage. The MoD left following the war and the castle remained unused until the 1960s. From the 1960s to September 2000 it was home to a wildlife park, containing British and European fauna. Riber Castle Wildlife Park, or Riber Zoo as it was known, was eventually sold by the owner, but they were unable to sell it as a going concern, and so the park eventually closed. The park was criticised heavily for the treatment of the animals kept there, and the closure was not without controversy. Activists also released several lynx from Riber Zoo which escaped into the wild. Plans to turn the shell into apartments received planning consent on 15 March 2006. The castle walls have now been secured, chimneys and floors rebuilt, 119 windows replaced and a roof added. It is expected that two show apartments will be ready some time in 2014. Access to the site before 2006 was securely restricted, until the perimeter fence was unwired to provide unrestricted access to the site, which later became a commonly used footpath. However, recently developers have added a second (more secure) fence, boarded up all entrance points and have manned security onsite. More recently, the castle has been converted into flats.

The proposed Bolsover HEALTH & WELBEING CENTRE On behalf of our Patient Participation Group, may I thank the Bolsover public who have shown interest by speaking to me about the above. From these comments, it is very evident, that the public are in agreement that our ideas to have a Health & Welbeing Centre on Kitchen Croft would be the best outcome for the buildings.By having the centre, complete with a hospital facility situated in the town centre, the public are saying that they would welcome the centre and all the facilities it could provide. Some of the public, are worried about the consequences of the proposed building plans for the town.Their worries are mainly concerned at the lack of LEISURE FACILITIES in Bolsover, and the lack of FACILITIES FOR OUR YOUNG people. Their is also concern about the impact on the infrastructure, ROADS and SHOPPING, because an estimated 5,000 new residents living in the town will undoubtedly lead to problems on our roads. The other major concern is,where will they shop. Our PPG, have done as much as we can in our attempts to achieve our aims. We have lobbied and made contact with Bolsover DC councillors’, Derbyshire County Council, Morrisons as well as NHS providers in Derbyshire. We have raised the issues in local newspapers and magazines and of course spoken to our MP. Mr Skinner told me that our proposals were the best idea he had heard in relation to the Kitchen Croft site. We are now asking for public support for our ideas. If you welcome our ideas, or can think of a better use for the site, then why not lobbie your councillor’s.Write to them, speak to them, use social media and if possible write to local newspapers and magazines and bring the message to the forefront of public debate. Maybe someone with the time and facilities, can start a petition, maybe create a website, we welcome any well meaning support. Please become involved and tell our local councillors’ what you think, because if enough people support us, then maybe they will have to listen. I can be contacted by mail at the Castle Street Medical Centre. There is nothing in the above that relates to CSMC, it is purely the idea of the PPG

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this cliché statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

“Our main objective within our company is to; leave our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing them their own unique showroom quality bathroom”
