‘A POEM ABOUT THE SHOWROOM’ I so wanted a new bathroom, My hubby he agreed, We didn’t know just where to look, Until then, we’d had no need... We travelled about all over the place, Some styles we really admired... But my bathroom was such a tiny space, I needed to be inspired! We were about to call it a day, And put our plans on hold. When a new sign went on display, As we were driving down the road. The signage said ‘The Showroom’, It was like a ‘beacon in the mist!’ I only popped in to ask for a card But the smiles I couldn’t resist... The store, was work in progress, Parts of bathrooms were on show, But Lesley and Paul were lovely, So professional and ‘in the know!’ They were working to a deadline, Putting in every hour god sent... But Paul came down to measure up, Then back to work he went... We are so proud of our bathroom, Paul and Lesley could not have done more. The last time we called in ‘The Showroom’, There were kitchens and tiles in the store... If you need a kitchen or bathroom< This team will help you to choose. Just pop into ‘The Showroom’, You really have nothing to loose! Lesley and Paul are resilient, They both love a laugh and a joke. Bolsover has finally come up in the world, ‘The Showroom’ is truly bespoke! Written by Lorraine Bytheway, proud member of the Bolsover Poetry Group

Your home is an investment, and according to new government statistics there is no time like the present to make those valuable home improvements. But there are so many options for Kitchens and Bathrooms these days that it’s completely normal to be overwhelmed by the mass of possibilities.

You have made the big decision to have a new bathroom or kitchen, your creative juices begin to flow yet you have no idea where to start and colour choices are bouncing around in your mind. Does this sound similar? Then look no further than Lesley and Paul’s The Show Room where you are at the heart of your project. Stepping in to The Show Room I found a mass of creativity and colour even down to the smallest detail. Lesley and Paul greeted me with a friendly and very approachable manner and I soon felt overcome with the passion that these two hold for placing the client at the forefront of their project. You are free to view the beautifully designed showroom of your own accord, or with the guidance of an expert designer who is on hand to answer any questions, or set aside any concerns when it comes to renovations. The mix of vibrancy and imagination that surrounds the business makes for a perfect first choice for your next project!

What Inspired you to start the business? Lesley: We both wanted to do something a little different and put our all in to something we could be proud of and pass down to the family. Paul decided that Bolsover would be the right area to begin as he is born and bred here, and there is a lot happening in the area so we thought it would be great to bring something different to the town. Paul was a fitter for 25 years (he is also excellent for helping a lady in distress!) and I have a background in design which means we are not just working from a piece of paper, we both have the knowledge and ability to create something special with a client.

2. How do you ensure you stand out from other Kitchen

and Bathroom designers? Lesley: If you visit us you will see our flare for the alternative and creative. We absolutely love colour and variation and we want to inspire people to create something that they would be proud of, as everyone has the ability to design, but it’s about having the confidence in what you want to achieve. We don’t design a complete project on our own, we design with customers to accomplish results they

envision. We want people to be proud of what their own ideas have created, and that is worth a diamond to us.

3. What does a project entail from start to finish?

Lesley: It starts with a friendly face, people feeling comfortable in the knowledge that they can come in and have a wander around the show room. We like to make customers feel at ease from the beginning. Then we go out and measure up before coming back to the office and creating 3D imagery of how the overall finish will look, every single nut, bolt and screw will be shown allowing the client to how it fits and exactly what will be going in to their room. Once they are happy we work together to set a suitable date to begin installation. Me and Paul visit several times a week to ensure everything is running perfectly.

4. The Showroom is a family orientated business, tell me more about the roles within the company. Lesley: My Daughter is working with us now, she is just starting to do some design and has a real flare for colour, adding a classic and modern spin to projects. One of my sons currently looks after everything web based making sure it all runs smoothly and reflects the creativity we are passionate about. Our other son takes after his dad, there is nothing that he can’t fit, he has fitted a lot of the stuff in The Show Room and works alongside our fitters. My grandsons have also decided on the offices they will have when they are older! So it is very much a family orientated business which we all love.

5. The designs you currently have on display

are beautiful and creative, who is the mastermind behind these? Lesley: Me and Paul. The designs mainly come from the top of my head, some of them are really wacky. My son put it fantastically once, he said

“Mum, this show room is like the inside of yours and dad’s midlife crisis” which I think is absolutely (and amusingly) right! It’s everything we have ever wanted to achieve and we are so very proud of it. And as someone once said to me, “if it clashes, it has to clash beautifully!”.

6. Do you plan on branching out?

Lesley: We do. We have plans to have our second show room open next year in the Nottingham area which we are very excited for.

7. You have some of the best products on

display in Europe, can you tell me a little bit more about them? Lesley: All manufacturers we use are at the top for service and come from all over; The UK, Italy, Spain etc. We only use top quality products which hold excellent guarantees and are available in different price ranges. Over the years we have dealt with a lot of manufacturers, and as far as we are concerned the ones we have are the cream of the crop.

8. Have you got anything in the pipeline for the

coming year? Lesley: We can’t go in to too much detail but we have something fantastically amusing and big happening in the summer for a charity, so keep your eyes peeled!

THE HISTORY OF PANCAKE DAY

38

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2016 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 9th February. Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a frying pan. A traditional English pancake is very thin and is served immediately. Golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar are the usual toppings for pancakes. The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439. The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.” (Pasquil’s Palin, 1619).

The ingredients for pancakes can be seen to symbolise four points of significance at this time of year: Eggs ~ Creation Flour ~ The staff of life Salt ~ Wholesomeness Milk ~ Purity In the UK, pancake races form an important part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations an opportunity for large numbers of people, often in fancy dress, to race down streets tossing pancakes. The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first, carrying a frying pan with a cooked pancake in it and flipping the pancake as you run.

The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now world famous. Competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf. Each contestant has a frying pan containing a hot pancake. She must toss it three times during the race. The first woman to complete the course and arrive at the church, serve her pancake to the bellringer and be kissed by him, is the winner. At Westminster School in London, the annual Pancake Grease is held. A verger from Westminster Abbey leads a procession of boys into the playground where the school cook tosses a huge pancake over a five-metre high bar. The boys then race to grab a portion of the pancake and the one who ends up with the largest piece receives a cash bonus from the Dean. In Scarborough, Yorkshire, on Shrove Tuesday, everyone assembles on the promenade to skip. Long ropes are stretched across the road and there maybe be ten or more people skipping on one rope. The origins of this custom is not known but skipping was once a magical game, associated with the sowing and spouting of seeds which may have been played on barrows (burial mounds) during the Middle Ages. Many towns throughout England used to hold traditional Shrove Tuesday football (‘Mob Football’) games dating back as far back as the 12th century. The practice mostly died out with the passing of the 1835 Highways Act which banned the playing of football on public highways, but a number of towns have managed to maintain the tradition to the present day including Alnwick in Northumberland, Ashbourne in Derbyshire (called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match), Atherstone in Warwickshire, Sedgefield (called the Ball Game) in County Durham, and St Columb Major (called Hurling the Silver Ball) in Cornwall.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR COMPUTER’S PERFORMANCE

Tips for Speeding Up Your PC Few things are as frustrating as dealing with a slow, sluggish computer. When a computer is brand new, it works wonderfully well. Over time, though, its performance can slowly begin to worsen. This happens for a number of reasons, but the biggest culprits are things like spyware, adware and other computer threats that are unwittingly downloaded along with other content while online. You don’t have to download thousands of MP3s, movies or other items to experience these problems, either – nobody is immune to them. Instead of accepting the situation, there are plenty of techniques and strategies that you can use to make it better – a few of the best ones are outlined below. Strategy #1: Clean Your Computer’s Windows Registry The biggest cause of slow, sluggish PC performance is errors and problems within its Windows registry. Adware, spyware and other threats usually target the registry, damaging or misplacing important files within it. When it comes to PC cleaning, a daily Windows registry cleaning should be at the top of your list of priorities. However, this should never be done manually – there are too many opportunities for major errors that could seriously damage your PC’s operating system. Instead, invest in a highquality Windows registry cleanup program and configure it to run once per day – you won’t believe the difference that it makes. Strategy #2: Remove Unneeded Files Every time you log on to the Internet or otherwise use your computer, temporary files are generated. They are usually only needed once; however, they don’t disappear on their own. Instead, they accumulate over time until they are cluttering up your computer’s file system and affecting its performance. While it’s possible to remove these files one-by-one, it’s much easier and quicker to use a PC cleaning tool that’s designed for the purpose. Try to do so about one time per week to keep your computer humming along with ease. Strategy #3: Remove Unneeded Programs Like many people, you probably download and try out many different programs each month. How many of them do you actually end up using on a regular basis? Chances are, not very many of them. By getting into the habit of uninstalling unused 16

and unneeded programs, you can keep your computer’s file system a lot less cluttered. In turn, your PC’s performance will improve dramatically. You can optimize your computer in this way by using its Add/Remove Programs feature. Its location varies by operating system, but you should be able to find it somewhere in the Control Panel. Strategy #4: Empty the Recycle Bin When you click “delete” on a file or a program, it doesn’t go away for good – not immediately, anyway. Instead, it sits in a kind of purgatory in your computer’s Recycle Bin. As things pile up in the Recycle Bin, your computer can start exhibiting some very annoying problems. If sluggish startups and frequent crashes are occurring with increasing frequency – and your computer’s recycle bin is very full – go ahead and empty it. From then on, get into the habit of doing so about one time per week. This small but important strategy can make a huge difference. Strategy #5: Perform a Disk Defragmentation Windows isn’t very efficient when it comes to storing files. It actually splits them up, depositing them into whatever spaces are available. The more spaced apart the pieces of a file are, the harder your computer has to work to make them run. The Windows disk defragmentation system tune-up utility works to piece all of those files back together again. The process is a long one, though, and only needs to be done about four times per year. Set it up to run automatically once every three months. By doing so, you’ll be able to keep your computer running in tiptop shape. When it comes to keeping your computer running optimally, small but regular maintenance is the best way to go. Protecting your PC only does so much; even the most careful Internet users in the world unintentionally download malicious software from time to time. By using basic system tune-up tools, cleaning your computer’s Windows registry regularly, performing regular file-cleaning maintenance and otherwise optimizing your PC, you should be able to keep it in like-new condition for a lot longer. Even if your computer has been performing slowly for some time, beginning this regimen is sure to produce results. In the end, you’ll be able to enjoy a computer that flies along – instead of one that spins its wheels.

DISCOVER ENGLAND Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa A luxurious Victorian country house hotel at the gateway to the Peak District. The Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa is an elegant Victorian country house, set in 262 acres of grounds on the edge of the Peak District National Park. The Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa is well-known throughout the north-west of England for its 18-hole championship golf course and excellent leisure and spa facilities. Overlooking the Cheshire Plain, it’s also perfectly placed for a shopping trip to Manchester. HISTORY The hall was built in about 1825 for William Turner, a Blackburn mill owner and Member of Parliament. The architect was Thomas Emmet senior from Preston. During the 20th century the building was used as a school by the religious institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco, who in 1936 added a chapel to the south of the house, dedicating it to Saint John Bosco. This was designed by the Arts and Crafts architect Philip Tilden. An attic was added to the house in the middle of the 20th century. In 1989 the house and church were converted into a hotel and country club. Address: Pott Shrigley, Macclesfield SK10 5RT Architectural style: Neoclassical architecture

CASTLE STREET MEDICAL CENTRE

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 27th February The origins of our Town Come and discover more about Bolsover Town. Who lived here, what were they doing and why? With local Archaeologist, Matt Beresford. 27th March Furry Tales Tales and advice from a veterinary nurse with Jenny Gibbons.

The PPG met on Monday 15 th Jan. I informed the group that I had been invited to join a NHS England Patient & Public Reference Group. The group members will be taking part in group discussions, about 20 members, to share our experiences of general practice care. There are to be three meetings throughout England with ours being in Leeds. There will be discussions on how practices can best organise and meet the expectations and needs of patients in the changing world the NHS now finds itself in.The information gained from the groups will be fed into the review, and there will be further involvement later in the spring. We have also been accepted as part of the NAPP group of 100 Operating Framework. This is a group of 100 representatives fromPPGs that are NAPP members.
