Ladybower Reservoir Ladybower Reservoir is situated in the Upper Derwent Valley at the heart of the Peak National Park, in an area often referred to as the “Lake District of the Peak”. It is surrounded by magnificent countryside where water and woodland, topped by high moors, predominate. In recent years forestry has become an important factor and the sides of the valley have been clothed in conifers. Not surprisingly, the area has become so popular that over two million people visit each year. The outstanding beauty of the area acts as a magnate for walkers, cyclists, fell-runners and those people who just come to relax and enjoy the countryside. At certain times the road beyond Fairholmes is closed to help protect the environment and a mini-bus service is operated. Disabled Badge holders are exempt. The Upper Derwent Information Centre is based at Fairholmes, where bikes can be hired and information about the area obtained. There are also large car parks, toilets and plenty of room for picnics. The valley was a very attractive location for the storage of water, with its long deep valley and narrow points for dam building. This combined with a high average rainfall, low population level and heavy demand for water from the industrial towns that surrounded the Peak District, made the case for reservoir construction. The Derwent Valley Water Board was set up in 1899 to supply water to Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leicester and the Howden and Derwent Reservoirs were constructed shortly afterwards.
The Derwent Dams were used during the Second World War to perfect the ‘bouncing bombs’ technique which in 1943, breached the Ruhr Valley Dams, in the heartland of industrial Germany. A plaque and memorial museum in the west tower of Derwent Dam retells the story of the Dambusters. The museum is open most Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the year.
At that time the demand for water was satisfied and although plans existed for further reservoirs, no further action was taken. But demand continued to grow and the decision was taken to build one very large reservoir, to be called Ladybower. This though entailed the flooding of the villages of Ashopton and Derwent and caused considerable unrest. However, the project went ahead and the villagers were moved to houses built specially for them at Yorkshire Bridge.
The tiny village of Yorkshire Bridge, which lies in the shadow of the dam wall of the Ladybower Reservoir, with its neat, regimented rows of houses was used to house those rendered homeless by the flooding of the valley. One person though refused to move, Miss A Cotterill of Gwinnett House. She remained there until she died in 1990, at the age of 99, the waters of the reservoir lapping at the front garden steps.
The packhorse bridge that stood near to the gates of Derwent Hall, which had a Preservation Order on it, was moved stone by stone and rebuilt at Slippery Stones at the head of the Howden Reservoir. All the graves in the churchyard were excavated and the bodies reburied in nearby Bamford churchyard. A few properties built on slightly higher land, including the Shooting Lodge and former Roman Catholic School, survived. But the majority were demolished and flooded, leaving the church spire eerily poking out above the waters. The flooding was completed in 1945, and the opening ceremony was carried out on Tuesday September 25th 1945 by King George VI. Two years later the church spire was blown up.
Perhaps the best known inhabitant to have lived at Yorkshire Bridge was a sheepdog named Tip. Her master, Tagg, was a well-known local sheep farmer who helped found Hope Valley Sheepdog Trials, and during his later years lived at Yorkshire Bridge. On the 12 December 1953, Tagg, aged 85, went out for the last time with his faithful border collie, Tip, and vanished completely. Despite an exhaustive search neither he, nor his dog could be found. It was not until 15 weeks later that Tagg’s remains were discovered by chance, with the faithful Tip now completely exhausted lying about five yards away. Somehow, Tip had managed to survive heavy snow, biting winds and freezing temperatures on one of the most hostile stretches of moorland in the country.

Tip was carried back to the rescuer’s lorry and later transferred to a caring home, where she was carefully nursed back to health. Once the story became known, Tip became famous not only in this country, but abroad as well. A year later, in May 1955 she died. However, the hearts of those that had heard the story were so greatly touched, that a memorial was erected at the western end of Derwent Dam, in memory of Tip. COMPUTER SAFETY
JANUARY
SALES | REPAIRS | UPGRADES MAINTENANCE (no contract fee) | NETWORKING 4. TECH RESOLUTIONS: SPRING CLEAN IN SUMMER, AUTUMN & WINTER
1. TECH RESOLUTIONS: BACK UP YOUR DATA
Consider the amount of personal data stored on your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone. You’ll have photos, videos, music files, documents and more. Not only will some of these be irreplaceable, but it probably took you quite some time to gather them all together and make yourself at home on that computer. Now imagine someone steals your laptop, or your hard drive fails, or you accidentally overwrite those files. It happens every day, but you can quickly and easily set up an automated backup plan to protect your data.
2. TECH RESOLUTIONS: DON’T BE SO EASILY FOOLED
No doubt you’ve read all our advice on securing your PC or laptop with good anti-malware, antispyware and a firewall, but there’s one final piece of the security puzzle with which to contend: you. No offence intended, of course, but you are the weakest component in your computer’s defences. It is you who chooses easy-to-guess passwords, clicks on links or opens attachments in emails without checking they are legit, falls victim to phishing attacks and leaves traces of your identity all over the web. The solution is simple, and good advice for all walks of life: think before you act.
3. TECH RESOLUTIONS: MANAGE YOUR DIGITAL REPUTATION
It’s important to realise that these days your chances of securing that job of a lifetime depend on much more than your qualifications and CV. Your digital reputation is crucial. So, whether it’s to support your career or simply to prevent your friends thinking you’re an idiot and deleting you, watch what you post on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, particularly when you’re somewhat worse for wear.
10
5. TECH RESOLUTIONS: UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10
Out with the old and in with the new. If you’re still using Windows Vista, 7 or 8, you’re either very patient or you just don’t know that life doesn’t have to be like this. Windows 10 is Microsoft’s flagship operating system, and you don’t need to buy a new PC or laptop to enjoy it.
6. 2016 TECH RESOLUTIONS: RESCUE YOUR ANALOGUE MEDIA
Analogue media, such as printed photos, slides and negatives won’t last forever and, for each year that passes, you step that little bit closer to losing forever your precious memories. Analogue audio and video are subject to the same fate, find guides on converting audio tapes to CD or MP3 and VHS videos to DVD or Mpeg4.
7. TECH RESOLUTIONS: PERFECT YOUR PHOTOS FOR FREE
We aren’t all pro photographers, and you’ve probably got hundreds of digital photos that should have been worthy contenders for framing on the wall or sharing with friends and family but, ultimately, were a let-down. The perfect photographic moment may have passed, but it isn’t too late to rescue your marred shots. You can correct blurred photos, remove red-eye, delete unwanted objects and more.
8. TECH RESOLUTIONS: GET FIT WITH TECHNOLOGY
Smartwatches and fitness bands are the way forward in 2017. If you’ve made a resolution to lose some weight or just get in shape, check out ways technology can help you get fit. Also see our list of the best smartwatches and best fitness trackers.

Know your rights JANUARY No matter how well you know someone, at some stage you’ll get them a Christmas present that doesn’t fit, isn’t right or they just don’t like. You don’t have an automatic right to return nonfaulty gifts bought on the high street. You do have a 14 day cancellation period for gifts bought online. Always keep the packaging if you want to return a gift - even the cable ties
NO RIGHT TO RETURN GIFTS
Many of us are surprised to find out that high street shops don’t have to accept returns unless an item is faulty, not as described or is unfit for purpose. The good news is that most retailers choose to provide a ‘goodwill’ returns policy, especially at Christmas, offering an exchange, refund or credit note for most returns. And if your gift was bought online, over the phone, or by mail order you have additional rights to return it under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. There are some gifts you may not be able to return. These include perishable items such as food and drink; personalised items and DVDs, music and computer software where the seal has been broken.
RETURNING A GIFT NOT BOUGHT BY YOU
If you receive an item as a gift, you’ll need proof of purchase, and to know the date the gift was ordered if it was bought online. The best way to do this is with a gift receipt. If you weren’t given one with your gift, you’ll need to ask for the receipt from person who bought it for you. If it was bought online, you may need to ask the person who bought it for you to return it as there are special online regulations that apply to online purchases. However difficult it may be to tell a loved one that a gift isn’t right, just remember that there is only so much space in the back of your wardrobe to store unwanted Christmas jumpers. And if you don’t return an unwanted gift, you may just find that for many more Christmases to come you’ll end up with something you really, really can’t stand!
CHECK RETURNS POLICY BEFORE YOU BUY
You can only return non-faulty goods for an exchange or refund if the retailer has a returns policy. Shops don’t have to have a returns policy, but if they have one they must stick to it. Returns policies are usually displayed on receipts, on signs in-store and online. You can also ring the shop’s customer services phone line to find out details of its returns policy. Most retailers impose
time limits for returning non-faulty products, such as 28 days, but many extend their returns policies around Christmas, so you might have more time than you think. If you pay by credit card, you also have extra protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. And under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, if you buy a gift online you have the right to cancel your order from the moment you place it until 14 days after you receive your goods.
ITEMS YOU CAN AND CAN’T RETURN
There are some returns exceptions worth knowing about, including: DVDs, music and computer software. Many retailers refuse returns if the seal or packaging has been broken. Perishable items You won’t usually be able to return an item if it’s perishable. This includes food and flowers. Made to order If an item has been made to order or personalised it’s very unlikely that you’ll be able to return it
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Hand-knitted snowman jumpers If it was made by a relative or friend, no matter how hideous or illfitting, your only option is to say thank you and graciously accept it. You’ll probably have to be seen wearing it once a year though!
WHAT YOU NEED TO RETURN A GIFT
Depending on a retailer’s returns policy some will only exchange or give you a credit note, while others will give you a refund. But all shops usually require a few key things. A receipt Always keep your receipt and take it with you. If you’re buying a gift for someone else, ask for a gift receipt so they can change it if they want to. The card you paid with If you paid for an item on a debit or credit card, take it with you when you return the item. This is especially important if you want a refund as it’s often credited to the card you paid with. The original packaging We’ve said it already, but don’t underestimate the importance of taking the item’s original packaging with you. Even down to the pesky cable ties!

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this cliché statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

Testimonial to JDS Installations
“We have two main objectives within our company these are, leaving our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing our customer their own unique showroom quality bathroom”
Earlier this year we visited our relatives and were impressed by the quality of the work carried out by JDS with their bathroom. We have been disappointed with contractors in the past. However we are very pleased with the work carried out by Darren and Jamie, they have transformed our shower room. During the initial meetings, they listened and designed and bathroom based on our requirements, presenting samples of materials and we had the opportunity to make any adjustments. Darren and Jamie are enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Customer satisfaction is highly important to them. We knew exactly what the price was beforehand, the work was completed on time and the quality is exceptional! Thank you JDS. Best Regards Mr and Mrs Wells 19
Holiday Review JANUARY
PARIS
However well you think you know Paris, there’s always something new to discover. Districts change, old ones get restored, whole new areas like Seine Rive Gauche around the new Bibliothèque Nationale go up, or the long shabby Faubourg-St-Denis suddenly becomes the latest hipster-hangout. There’s always a new bar or restaurant to check out, a new star baker, the latest gallery. Behind its grand palaces and boulevards, you can discover intimate courtyards and gardens; behind historic façades are craft workshops and eminent research institutions.
The best budget hotels for a European city break in 10 top destinations. A guide to the top budget hotels in Europe, including the best affordable accommodation in Venice, Rome, Barcelona, Florence, Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dubrovnik, Paris and Madrid.
VENICE
Venice never loses its capacity to enchant: the sheer loveliness of an exquisite city that seems miraculously built on water. Venice’s churches and museums offer antique glories aplenty, but there is also a vibrant contemporary art scene, even away from the Art Biennale. It’s important to remember that you are never more than a bridge and an alley away from a more secluded city, full of secret campi (squares), handsome Gothic palazzi and lively neighbourhood wine bars.
ROME
There’s no real off-season in the Eternal City where classical ruins and early Christian places of worship stand next to – or lie beneath – Renaissance palazzos and Baroque fountains. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you shouldn’t even think of trying to do it in a day. You’ll get much more out of this fascinating urban village, which still seems bemused at times by having founded an empire, if you enter into its laid-back rhythms.
BARCELONA
Barcelona combines everything that is most charming about Mediterranean cities – a relaxed pace, months of endless sunshine, unbeatable food – with the cultural and design clout of almost any city in the cold north. Its patchwork of architectural styles displays and a day spent admiring them can be topped off with a sundowner on one of the city’s seven beaches before dinner at any number of Michelin-starred gastronomic temples or humble, family-run tapas bars.
FLORENCE
Florence is a living city with a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, and a lively cultural movida that goes beyond old masters to embrace opera, classical music and contemporary art. Handsome, historic, full of quirky shops and quality crafts, and close to the vine-covered hills of Chianti, it’s one of Europe’s most civilised long weekend destinations. The cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is one of Europe’s great art cities. There’s so much exquisite art and architecture, it’s difficult to know where to start.
PRAGUE
It’s easy to forget, just 20 years on, that Czechoslovakia emerged from the fall of the Iron Curtain with a oncejailed dissident as president, inspiring the world. Especially with Prague’s current appearance: gleaming software company offices, glitzy fashion shops, scads of skinny model types gliding in and out - often with young, bemused business types in tow!
20
MADRID
AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam somehow manages to have it all. It has the buzz of a metropolis, with few big-city drawbacks. It’s small enough to walk or cycle almost anywhere you want, yet is rarely dull. Dinky gabled buildings, pretty bridges and quiet canals give it village-like charm, yet you’ll also find top-ranking art museums and one of the best orchestras in the world. Most of all, Amsterdam combines its glittering past with a wry, rough, rebellious contemporary edginess. Southeast of the historic canal area, right at a Metro stop, a block away from the Amstel River, and only 10 or so minutes’ walk from the hip De Pijp quarter. Clever visual references to the building’s history as a newspaper office occur throughout. Colours are bold and bright, with many a quirky designer flourish, and with a lot going on around you – there’s something of the atmosphere of a busy arts centre.
BERLIN
Since the fall of its world-renowned Wall, Berlin has busied itself with becoming one of the most stimulating creative and cultural centres in Europe. These days it’s a city of many faces, known equally as a hedonistic hub (parties here can go on for days rather than hours), a magnet for history buffs (the city was at the heart of much of the turbulent 20th century) and, increasingly, as a destination for families thanks to a wealth of green spaces that includes the sprawling Tiergarten, the Sunday flea market at Mauerpark and the Volkspark Friedrichshain.
DUBROVNIK
With its sublime location, overlooking the calm blue waters of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. The main draw is the charming pedestrian-only old town, packed with aristocratic palazzi and elegant Baroque churches, contained within sturdy medieval fortifications. Add to this the beaches, pristine sea, informal eateries serving top-notch seafood, chic five-star hotels and adventure sports facilities, and your holiday is made.

Madrid has really revamped itself in recent years. The Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums have all got bigger and better, while the centre of the city is smartening up with new boutiques, delis, cafés and gastrobars opening up every week. It’s perfect for a culture-rich long weekend or city break, with great food and a lively atmosphere at night. Although it is cold in winter, there are usually a lot of bright, sunny days and it is often warm enough to sit outside during the day.

HOUSE TO HOME

HOW TO MAKE AN UNFORGETTABLE FIRST IMPRESSION
Choose Select for all your Home Improvements projects
Striking hallways for an unforgettable first impression. Your hallway is the first impression people get of your home, so it is worth making it a vibrant and welcoming space that reflects both your character and the style of the rest of the house. Even the smallest of spacaes can be transformed with a lick of bright paint, a high-impact storage unit, or a colourful carpet, so take a look at our ideas on how to make an unforgettable first impression.
Friendly Local Family run Business TEL: 01246 822 882 or 07816 297 455 email: sales@select-homeimprovements.co.uk Why Choose Select? Family run building business since 1974. Our own experienced craftsmen covering all aspects of the building industry. If you’re looking for the complete building service company to handle anything from building your new home to refurbishing your existing one!
Start with a welcoming colour In small spaces it is best to choose a white or neutral shade to enhance the feeling of space, then layer on a few dazzling accessories. Grey is a popular choice in home decor at the moment and a soft shade is a great option for a hallway, adding a sophisticated feel when teamed with crisp white woodwork, or mix it up by opting for a two-toned paint effect for a modern take on the dado rail. If you want to experiment with brighter shades for real wow factor, try painting the doors leading off your hallway to add interest and bold pops of colour in an all white scheme. And don’t forget the effect beautifullydesigned hallway wallpaper can have in an entrance hall. Hardwearing hallway flooring is essential in this high-traffic area and a carpet or stair runner in a bright colour or bold pattern is a great way to add impact. A bold striped runner on the stairs helps to draw the eye up and into the space and can create a fun contemporary feel that packs a punch. Paint the surrounding stairs and banisters a contrasting colour so it doesn’t overwhelm the space. Practical storage is a must, so if you have the space, put up shelves or add a useful but striking console table or unusual chest of drawers laden with a high-impact lamp or sculptural artwork. A coat rack and shoe rail are also handy additions in a hall to stop the clutter building up, but choosing an interesting design can also liven up your scheme and leave your guests with an unforgettable first impression of your home. Because of the transient nature and smaller size of a hallway, it is often used as an experimental space when decorating. Layer up wall decorations for an unusual hallway feature. Select a motif from your wallpaper and top with a larger version, such as this fabulous oversize butterfly. A statement wallpaper with a rogues gallery of family images brings a warm welcome to a family hallway.

MOTORING REVIEW
JANUARY
MOTO GUZZI MGX-21 FLYING FORTRESS; THE ITALIANS TAKE ON HARLEY AT ITS OWN GAME Perhaps the only way that Moto Guzzi could have aimed its MGX-21 more obviously at American motorcyclists would have been to give it a Stars and Stripes paint scheme, or wire the horn to play Yankee Doodle Dandy when the ignition was switched on. Guzzi has increased sales in Europe recently but is desperate to crack the huge US market, where its large, traditionally styled cruisers and tourers should be well placed to take the fight to dominant Harley-Davidson and its homeproduced rivals. The reality is that Italy’s oldest manufacturer barely registers in Stateside sales charts and, according to its own research, is almost unknown there even to most motorcyclists. The MGX-21, shaped at parent group Piaggio’s design centre in Pasadena, has been created primarily to boost US profile but is also coming to the UK. With its halffairing, sound system and hard panniers, this carbon-fibre clad, red-highlighted relative of the California is a “bagger”, like Harley’s market-leading Super Glide. The 21 in its name refers to its 21-inch diameter front wheel. Baggers with giant front wheels are popular with the custom crowd at biker meets, notably at Sturgis in South Dakota, where the MGX was recently launched to US journalists. Apart from fresh red paint on its sticking-out cylinder heads the 1,380cc, air-cooled V-twin engine is identical to that of other California family models, complete with three riding modes and maximum output of 96bhp. It’s a wonderfully flexible powerplant, happy to pull sweetly almost from idle with a soft exhaust note and engagingly long-legged character. Acceleration is respectably strong, especially for a bike weighing a hefty 340kg. The broad “batwing” fairing allows effortless main-road travel, aided by the standard fitment cruise control. The chassis is also compromised, by the weight of the front wheel’s carbon shroud and unusually large diameter. During development this tended to make the wheel flop into turns at low speed, so Guzzi added a steering damper whose resistance increases as the handlebar is turned. The result is a slightly imprecise feel at town speeds: disconcerting for shorter riders, in particular, despite the bike’s low seat.

Its suspension provides a compliant ride along with wellcontrolled damping; broad Dunlop tyres and generous ground clearance contribute to the fun. Braking performance is strong, thanks to radial four-piston Brembo front calipers and a capable ABS system. The MGX scores with its fairly comfortable seat (less so for a pillion), generous fuel range and sweetshifting, shaft-drive transmission. Its panniers come with inner bags and are respectably roomy, though can’t take a crash helmet. There’s also a useful USB socket below the instrument panel; linking to a smartphone requires an accessory holder. Other extras including a taller screen and footboards would add to the MGX’s comfort and practicality, as well as to the already substantial price of £17,336.
Local collect & return service or just enjoy a coffee/snack and relax watching TV in our comfortable waiting area.
As a stylish and distinctive tourer the MGX has plenty of appeal, but its awkward slow-speed steering is a high price to pay for the visual impact of that front wheel. Most riders tempted by a Guzzi would be better off with the less extravagant Audace or Eldorado models, which combine the same engine with more conventional chassis. Guzzi’s management seems to agree because the MGX is coming to the UK in very small numbers, to be sold through just four dealers. Its sales will not trouble Harley-Davidson in the States, either. But if the Flying Fortress manages to alert American riders to Moto Guzzi’s existence, this most precisely targeted of Italian bikes will have scored a direct hit.

THE FACTS Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress Tested: 1,380cc four-stroke V-twin, six-speed transmission Top speed: 120mph (estimated) Range: 200 miles @ 45mpg (estimated) Verdict: Dramatically styled bagger that offers flexible V-twin performance plus comfort and practicality but is compromised by imprecise slowspeed steering

BELIEVE! ACHIEVE! SUCCEED!
Beef & Beer Pie ........................................
A steak and ale pie is a comforting classic. This version has suet pastry and a dark rich gravy
One to one and group mobile training available.
Method .........................
Ingredients .........................
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Using a flameproof casserole dish with a lid, soften onion and celery in the butter. Stir in the flour until it has disappeared, then stir in the beef and Worcestershire sauce. Crumble in stock cubes and add thyme. Pour over ale, bring to a simmer, then cover and cook in the oven for 2½ hrs. Remove lid and cook for another 30 mins – this should thicken the sauce nicely.
1.
1 onion chopped
2.
1 small celery stick chopped
3.
2 tbsp butter
4.
2 tbsp plain flour
5.
700g beef shin, featherblade or
6.
stewing steak, cut into large chunks
7.
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
8.
2 beef stock cube
9.
2 sprigs thyme
2. Increase oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. For the pastry, whizz the flour, suet and 1 tsp salt in a food processor until there are no suet lumps. Keeping the motor running, dribble in 1 tbsp water at a time until the pastry starts to come together, then tip onto a lightly floured surface and bring together with your hands.
10.

3. Roll out half the pastry and use to line a 2022cm pie dish. Using a slotted spoon, spoon in all of the meat, then pour over some of the sauce until the meat is just coated. Put the rest of the sauce into a saucepan. Roll out the remaining pastry to cover the pie. Trim the edge with a small, sharp knife, then crimp or fork the edges to seal. Make a small heart from cuttings. Brush top of the pie and heart with beaten egg, then dip heart into poppy seeds and stick to top. Bake for 30-40 mins until golden brown and crisp. Reheat sauce and serve with the pie along with some mash and greens. 34

RESOLUTION 10 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION A SUCCESS Most of us will make a New Year’s resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less but only one in 10 of us will achieve our goal. Psychologists have found we’re more likely to succeed if we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and timebased. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year’s resolutions. His team found that those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb. Some focused too much on the downside of not achieving their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal or relied on will power alone.

“Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts but our results suggest that they simply don’t work,” says Prof Wiseman. “If you are trying to lose weight, it’s not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer.” He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target broke their goal into smaller goals and felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these. “Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping yourself stick to it,” says Prof Wiseman.
TOP 10 GOAL-SETTING TIPS
Prof Wiseman’s top 10 tips to achieving your New Year’s resolution:
Main Street - Carr Vale - Chesterfield Facebook - /Playatwackyworld

1. Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.
2.
Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve.
3. Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past
resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment.
4. Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions.
WE WANT TO SUPPORT LOCAL ACTIVITIES, COMMUNITY GROUPS & EVENTS
Instead think about what you really want out of life.
5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based. 6. Tell your friends and family about your goals. You’re

more likely to get support and want to avoid failure.
7. Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated
with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim.
8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a subgoal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress.
9. Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a
handwritten journal, completing a computer spread sheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures.
10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether.

We are actively recruiting for Bolsover fire station On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty. On-Call Firefighters will book themselves available for fire calls and, if a call comes in during the hours they have agreed to be on call, they must reach the fire station within 5 minutes of receiving the pager message, and we are after people who can offer daytime cover including weekends.

JANUARY General tasks and garden maintenance Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose, left running for an hour or so. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed.
TREES, SHRUBS AND CLIMBERS
Trim hedges such as privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, thuja, leylandii and lonicera - don’t bother with secateurs unless you have time on your hands - a broad chop with sharp shears is fine. Prune early summer flowering shrubs such as weigela, philadelphus and deutzia after they have flowered to avoid the leggy look. Cut out some of the oldest wood (up to a third of the bush) right down to the base - don’t leave it too late or the new growth will not have enough time to produce a decent show for next year’s flowering... procrastinate at your peril! Keep spraying roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Do this in the evening to avoid harming bees. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember stricken leaves must be burnt - do not leave them on the compost heap as this will become the perfect incubation site. Feed with a foliar feed and beware greenfly - treat immediately if an infestation occurs - ask in the garden centre for advice as to what to use if you are unsure. Keep deadheading roses regularly, cutting back to the nearest five leaf spray with sharp secateurs - just breaking the stem leaves the rose more vulnerable to infection. Keep an eye open for rose suckers (which appear from low down and have different leaves) and remove by pulling downwards and tearing - cutting them will merely encourage them to reappear!
48
LAWNS
Keep mowing your lawn but raise the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller, although this will also kill any wild flowers. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller!
FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS
Divide old clumps of bearded irises and replant. The big chop – chop oriental poppies, lupins, delphiniums and geraniums right down to the ground once they have finished flowering - be brave and be brutal - the new leaves will be an ornament and some may flower again. Support tall delphinium stems with individual canes. Cheat and fill any gaps in your borders with containergrown perennials. Dahlias will keep colour going until the first frosts so are a great autumn brightener in mixed borders. Go for instant impact and colour in your garden or on your terrace with a ready planted container; or for a special occasion sink whole containers into your borders for a fabulous instant makeover!
