TED
Founded: February 23, 1984 - 33 years ago Headquarters: New York City, New York, U.S. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Founder(s): Richard Saul Wurman & Harry Marks WEBSITE: WWW.TED.COM
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a media organization which posts talks online for free distribution, under the slogan “ideas worth spreading”. TED was founded in February 1984 as a conference, which has been held annually since 1990. TED’s early emphasis was technology and design, consistent with its Silicon Valley origins, but it has since broadened its focus to include talks on many scientific, cultural, and academic topics. The main TED conference is held annually in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Prior to 2014, the conference was held in Long Beach. TED events are also held throughout North America and in Europe and Asia, offering live streaming of the talks. They address a wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture, often through storytelling. The speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and engaging ways they can. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall, Al Gore, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Billy Graham, Richard Dawkins, Bill Gates, Bono, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and many Nobel Prize winners. TED’s current curator is the British former computer journalist and magazine publisher Chris Anderson. Since June 2006, TED Talks have been offered for free viewing online, under an Attribution-NonCommercialNoDerivatives Creative Commons license, through TED.com. As of March 2016, over 2,400 TED Talks are freely available on the website. In June 2011, TED Talks’ combined viewing figure stood at more than 500 million, and by November 2012, TED Talks had been watched over one billion times worldwide. Not all TED Talks are equally popular, however. Those given by academics tend to be watched more online while art and design videos tend to be watched less than average. 8
TED is currently funded by a combination of various revenue streams, including conference attendance fees, corporate sponsorships, foundation support, licensing fees, and book sales. Corporate sponsorships are diverse, provided by companies such as Google, GE, AOL, Goldman Sachs, and The Coca-Cola Company, among others. Sponsors do not participate in the creative direction of the event, nor are they allowed to present on the main stage, in the interests of independence. The TED staff consists of about 180 people headquartered in New York City and Vancouver.

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this clichÊ statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not sub-contract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

FIREPLACES TO WARM UP YOUR HOME THIS WINTER
B
A beautiful fireplace not only gives a warm feeling to a room — its architectural style sets the tone for the rest of the space. These examples run the gamut from rustic fieldstone chimneys, to polished Georgian mantels and minimal fireboxes set in monolithic stone slabs. Whatever the design, their presence invites visitors to draw a little bit closer get snuggled and linger a little bit longer over a cup of tea! A. An ornately carved Old English pine mantel (originally from an 18th-century home) and wood sign gives the country home of interior designer Scott Yetman a rustic charm. He found the wood Sans Souci sign (meaning “without a care”) at an antique store.
A B. A chalet’s fieldstone fireplace merges tech with tradition. A reclaimed wood mantel topped by pine cones and greenery softens the effect of the TV screen. C. Cladding the chimney breast completely in large limestone tiles is a clean, contemporary treatment for a fireplace. The stone’s natural striations are warm, visually engaging, and soothing. D. A white-painted mantel pops against the glazed peacock-blue walls in designer Colette van den Thillart’s London home. The mantel is decorated with artworks by famed British artists and poets, while the black metal surround below is embellished with a beaded border.

Place one at the centre of each mozzarella ball. 2. Boil the pasta. Meanwhile, heat through the tomato sauce. When the tagliatelle is cooked, drain and stir through the pesto and any remaining basil, chopped finely. Divide between 4-6 serving bowls. Spoon over some tomato sauce, then arrange the stuffed tomato eyeballs on top. 22

THE SOUTH INTERVIEW
Facebook page @TheSouthBand www.thesouth.co.uk Baby and Toddler Music: www.amandaactionclub.co.uk Something exciting is happening at The Plug, Sheffield on Saturday 18th November! The South are back performing your favourite songs from 90s pop sensation ‘The Beautiful South’ with original member Alison Wheeler accompanied by Gaz Birtles on vocals.
The Plug is a venue that has seen many acts gracing the stage with their presence such as Artic Monkeys, The Prodigy and Lily Allen. But The South’s tour stop in Sheffield is certain to take you on a trip down nostalgia lane as the set includes songs such as ‘A Little Time’, ‘Perfect 10’ and ‘Don’t Marry Her’. After The Beautiful South split in 2007, some band members weren’t quite ready to give up their music career, The South originally formed in 2009 but changes have occurred since first returning to the music scene: Alison Wheeler and lifelong sax player Gaz Birtles, both on vocals, are now joined by Andy Price on keys, Steve Nutter (Bass) Phil Barton on guitar, Sue Robinson (saxophone), Karl Brown (percussion) Gareth John playing trumpet and Dave Anderson on drums: ‘The South’s new line up is complete! I had the pleasure of speaking to Alison Wheeler in the midst of the UK tour. There have been recent changes in the group with sax player; Gaz now sharing centre stage with you, were the changes within the band the reason for touring? Ali: We have been together so long now that we find ourselves often promoting new material, playing at festivals or touring. It’s who we are and it’s what we love to do. We are excited to welcome Gaz on vocals during this year’s tour and to present our changes in the line-up. It seems natural to us now to do a tour towards the end of the year, we have been doing this for the past 7 or 8 years. We usually finish on our home turf; Yorkshire, but this year we round up the tour in Bury St Edmunds. This year marks a decade since The Beautiful South Split, has the excitement of performing infamous songs such as ‘A Little Time’ changed at all? Ali: Not really. When Dave and I shared the vocals we both held the history of the band so it wasn’t too foreign when The South began. The whole chemistry and make-up of the band changed because we lost a few original members but this created an opportunity to re-group. We all decided that everybody in the band had to already know another member to ensure the chemistry was there, some members have known each other since school, which stands the test of time that we are still together. Just by watching clips of live gigs I can feel the excitement in the crowd, but how does it feel for you, as a band, to hear the songs you play sang back to you? 36
Ali: Yes. We are only as good as the audience really. I don’t think we have ever had a bad night where the audience don’t want to get involved. It is sometimes a shock to acknowledge how many songs seep in to your psyche. It’s a fantastic atmosphere, we love performing and it is such a ‘pinch yourself’ moment when we hear the songs sung back to us. As well as honouring, much loved songs from The Beautiful South, you also have new music will you be performing the new material? Ali: Sweet Refrains is quite a few years old now. Some people do just want to listen to the old hits but we also have some requesting new material and I think it’s quite nice for us to show we are evolving. We have some new material which we will be road testing this time around. Apart for the much-anticipated upcoming tour, do you have any other projects you are currently working on? Ali: The rest of the band all have small projects; the brass section has a brass, jazz band they are busy with, Phil is currently working on an album of his own. As for myself, after having children, I am a bit more aware of children’s music. I have done three kid’s songs and we are working on the fourth which helps with learning basics such as washing hands, etc. The projects I do are very close to my heart.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the name Shalamar became synonymous with the contemporary sound of catchy feel-good dance music. Shalamar are best known for a string of worldwide hits such as ‘The Second Time Around’, ‘Make That Move’, ‘I Owe You One’, ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’, ‘There It Is’, ‘Friends’ and of course their often copied anthem ‘A Night To Remember’. Shalamar started life as a “manufactured” group. Dick Griffey was the talent coordinator for US hit show Soul Train when he decided to set up his own record label – SOLAR. He took session musicians and created a hit record – Uptown Festival - which was credited to a faceless artist “Shalamar” in 1977. When the record became a hit he realised that there was a demand for an actual group so he set about creating one with soul train dancers Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley together with singer Gary Mumford, the latter of whom quickly left the group to pursue other interests. In late 1979, the group was riding high on the US R& B chart with their hit ‘Take That To The Bank’ when Gerald Brown became the second lead singer to walk out on Shalamar in as many years leaving his fellow band members without a frontman again. Jeffrey Daniel had met Howard Hewett at the LA nightclub “Maverick Flat” a few years earlier and had already asked him to take up lead vocals after Mumford’s departure. At that time, Hewett was committed to another contract to tour Europe with a covers band. When Brown left, Daniel asked Hewett to come on board again and this time he agreed. The rest is history! To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see SHALAMAR simply answer this question: “What was Dick Griffeys record label called?” Send answer to: insidebolsover@outlook.com with full name, address & contact details.
The leaves are falling, as well as the temperatures, and the rain has started to come more often. Yes, winter is definitely on its way. But, that doesn’t mean there are no jobs to be done in your garden in November – definitely not! You will have done a lot to prepare your garden for the winter back in October, but there are still tasks to tick off your to-do list this month. And, we’re here to help with expert gardening tips and advice to get you through the month.
lavatera can be reduced by half to lessen problems of wind rock over the winter. The most important part of autumn pruning is removing dead, diseased, or misplaced branches. Always aim to make a clean cut, either back to a bud on living wood, or back to the stem it’s growing from. After pruning, scatter a few handfuls of bonemeal around the root area of shrubs to stimulate root growth over winter, and mulch with garden compost.
Tulip bulbs Autumn is often treated as a time to hack everything back for a big tidy up before winter really sets in. However it’s actually not a good time to prune many trees and shrubs – you are better to do this late in winter, or in early spring. Cherries, if pruned, are very vulnerable to silver leaf disease. And evergreens are usually tackled in early spring, or after flowering.
If you have grapevines in your garden, then you will also need to prune these in November. Cut back all fruited shoots to one or two buds from the main stem. This can be carried out between November and late winter. If your grapevines under glass are then it’s best to prune them sooner, rather than later, so that winter sunlight coming into the greenhouse is not blocked out.
Saying this, there are some plants that should be pruned in the autumn – these include beech, hawthorn and hazel trees. As well as climbing and shrub roses. Vigorous growers like buddleja, dogwoods and
As long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, keep planting out pot-grown hardy climbers, shrubs and trees – and, you must remember to water them through the winter. It’s also a good time to plant bare root specimens which are usually cheaper to buy. Broad beans Sow some broad beans! These beans, which are also known as ‘fava’ beans are a cool weather crop and can be sown in autumn/early spring to give a succession of pods to pick from early, to mid, summer – delicious! They like a deep, rich, moist but free draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Some varieties can grow to around 90cm high, so make sure you prepare for this when choosing a spot to plant them. If your garden gets a lot of wind, then you may be better to grow a dwarf variety – such as ‘The Sutton’. Once they’re planted you can look forward to harvesting them come summer – make sure you pick them before the beans grow huge (beans should be about the size of a thumbnail when popped from their pod). Keep on top of leaves that are falling on the lawn, beds and in your pond. Rake them up regularly to keep on top of this task. It’s your last chance to plant some tulip bulbs! By planting them this late in the year you’ll have a much better chance of preventing the bulbs being infected with the fungal disease, tulip fire. Just don’t leave it too late – if you can get them planted right at the start of the month. They’ll be best to plant in a lightly shaded spot that gets more sun as spring progresses.

If you gave your lawnmower some care last month before thinking about packing it away, then you must remember to drain out any petrol. Unleaded petrol does not keep, and may cause you issues come spring when you try to start it up again. This also applies for hedge-trimmers and any other machinery requiring petrol. Bird feeder Now is the time to clean out bird nesting boxes. If you do not clean them out they can harbour wintering pests like mites, as well as bird diseases. Remover old nesting material before scrubbing with clean water. Allow the box to dry and then dust it with a wildlife-safe fungicide. Also put out bird food regularly to encourage the birds into your garden. Then, sit back and look forward to seeing some lovely birds visiting! Plant tree guards or chicken wire around young trees and woody shrubs that are prone to attacks from rabbits, deer or squirrels. This will stop them nibbling on the bark which could let diseases in. Prepare your taps for winter! Use foam lagging to insulate all outdoor taps and pipework against freezing temperatures. If they aren’t protected, water within the tap or pipe will expand causing splits or cracks meaning there will be leaks once they are thawed out. Gardening idea for this month… Late autumn is a great time to move established deciduous shrubs and trees. It’s hard work, but it’s worthwhile. Prepare the new planting site first, so you can replant quickly, provide a support stake if necessary, and water the moved plant thoroughly once it’s in. Then, follow our four simple steps… 1. Dig a trench around the rootball – distance from the trunk should be about a third of the height of the plant – bigger if you can handle it. 2. Cut through thicker roots and once you’re down about 45cm, start to undercut the rootball deeply, chopping with a spade. 3. Once the shrub comes free, drag the rootball onto sacking or mypex sheet and wrap the sheeting around it, tying it around the trunk. 4. Slide the plant onto a tarpaulin and carry it to its new planting site between two people. Unwrap the rootball and replant. Be sure to water it well!

CASTLE STREET REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER
JUNCTION ARTS INVITES YOU TO THE 24TH BOLSOVER LANTERN PARADE As we welcome in the bright winter nights, Junction Arts are busily preparing for the 24th annual Bolsover Lantern Parade with lantern-making workshops running throughout October and November. What once started as a small festive celebration has now become a spectacular winter festival and well loved tradition amongst the Bolsover community with thousands of people taking part and visiting the historical town. Kicking off the lantern-making season on Sunday 29th October is a Masterclass for up to 10 experienced teams to work exclusively with Junction Arts and professional sculptor, Rachel Carter. Tickets are £15 to cover the costs of materials so let your imagination run wild and book your place through our website: www. junctionarts.org Taking place at the Bolsover Assembly Rooms from 10am-4pm, the drop in community lantern making workshops will continue every weekend in November, from the 4th-19th, leading up to the Bolsover Lantern Parade and Christmas Market which will light up the town on Saturday 25th November 2017. The Parade will once again be setting off from the iconic Bolsover Castle at 5pm. All participants will have the opportunity to enter the Junction Arts lantern competition that starts at 4:15pm at the Castle, with great prizes donated by local businesses. We look forward to welcoming everyone on the 25th November and seeing the magical and memorable creations illuminating Bolsover’s skyline. Our meeting was held on 18th Sept with twelve members present along with our Practice Manager Mrs Tracey Siggsworth. There was some discussion related to the way the practice deals with complaints. The group members aired their views, and Tracey outlined the proceedure. The practice update was delivered by Tracey, in which the group were informed of the DCHS Patient Experience Team. The PET is a forum where patients can air any concerns, make a comment, a suggestion, a compliment or a complaint. The PET is available from 08.30-16.30 Monday to Friday, their telephone number is :- 01773525119 . Guy Freeland reported on a meeting held between Dr Carberry, Tracey, the chair and himself. In that meeting, the training that was available for reception staff was outlined and discussed. Tracey answered questions from members about the new electronic booking in system, which was thought to be quite effective. However there is some concern for elderly patients, patients with arthritis affecting their hands, and those with learning difficulties, that may find the system difficult to navigate. Tracey answered this by pointing out that patients could still book in as normal at the reception desk. After a discussion between members, it was decided that we should ask Dr Kar to a future meeting. Dr Kar could then outline aspects of his research work undertaken during the past year. For our disabled patients who receive the high level of DLA, please have a look at the Motability web site. On there, you can find some ways to save money by getting free, or cheap tickets for using the railways, the cinema, theatres and football stadiums. Some of these benefits are available to carers when they accompany a disabled person to any of the above. For example, you can purchase a Disabled Persons Railcard for £20 /year and this will get you and your carer a 1/3 discount on your journey. In these austere times, anything that saves money is most welcome. On a personal note, may I express my humble thanks, and appreciation to members of the group, for their kind thoughts and gifts, along with expressions of concern for me because of my absence from the meeting due to injuries sustained by me falling. It is now apparent, that we have lost the fight to turn the old council offices into a health and wellbeing centre. Morrisons have decided to demolish them. May I take this opportunity to thank members of the group, and the members of the public who were on our side and gave their support for those proposals. Our next meeting will be on Monday 16 th October, Grant Stothard chair of CSMC PPG
