Hello and a warm welcome from Inside Bolsover District magazine Hello and a warm welcome to Edition 11! Yes that’s right, edition 11. It only seems two minutes since we were at this time last year and the magazine was only just starting out. How time flys! It has been a crazy, crazy (almost) year but we are still here and getting stronger every month. What’s happening in this months edition? Thanks to everyone involved in the new feature we started last month, our Business Focus page. We have had some amazing feedback! A special thanks to Kym, our freelance journalist who is doing an amazing job sourcing the information and making it a feature that will be here to stay! (page 07) Do you want to be part of the Business Focus page? Please get in touch and see how we can raise your profile to all of our readers. The community section also started last month and we have had some great comments about this. Please remember, it is all about YOU, the community, so if you want us to do a free piece of advertorial then get in touch. We will be featuring the Postcode Payout again this month so look out for the banner and details of how you could be in with the chance of winning £25! This month there will be a new editorial page all about something interesting or unusual hand picked by our editor. This month its all about indoor gardening (page 22). Do you or does someone you know love Pokemon? We now have a local stockist of the Trading Card game, ‘Gotta catch em all!’ (page 45). If you love our magazine as much as we do or feel it might be missing something, send us your comments, email: insidebolsover@outlook.com Remember we are not just a magazine company, we are the full package design and print service, we believe we have a proven, winning formula for our magazine and advertising and you won’t get better exposure for your business. Why not get in touch? Please mention Inside Bolsover when responding to our advertiser’s and check us out on social media! Jamie Snarski. Editor Inside Bolsover District Magazine

1.
What are your backgrounds within the industry? Both of us have been in the trade for many years now. Between the two of us we carry 15 years’ experience in joinery, plumbing, bathroom fitting and installation. We pride ourselves in knowing the industry.
2.
How did the business itself start? It is a family run business which began as a now or never decision so we took the chance and decided to go for something we are all passionate about. We have never looked back and are proud of what we have achieved.
3.
Tell me about the specialty services you provide. Every job is unique to itself and attention to detail is everything. We also take great pride in everything we do to ensure a quality finish. We provide fittings for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms but as well as these we also specialise in wet room installations; which studies have shown to add up to £10,000 on to a property value, wooden floor installation, and we only use high quality porcelain and ceramic tiles. We project manage every job from start to finish, we do all the leg work for our customers so they are free to relax knowing we supply the best customer service we can.
4.
You provide excellent quality finishes to your installations, what steps do you take to ensure this? We take our time on every service we provide to ensure that we only ever have one job on the go at any one time, which means we are able to give 100% effort. Meticulousness is everything to us as we leave no stone unturned when completing a project. We feel the amount of attention to detail we provide is priceless, ensuring you are left with a home renovation to be proud of.
5.
What does ‘community’ mean to you? Keeping the smaller companies running by people going to their local trader for work that is needed allows for a tighter community base.

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this cliché statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.
“Our main objective within our company is to; leave our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing them their own unique showroom quality bathroom”

Recipe of the month May
Chocolate Rainbow Truffles Cake ........................................ Love chocolate? Then this tender, luxurious truffle cake is for you. With rainbow truffles sweet filling, the indulgence is so worth it!
Method .........................
Ingredients .........................
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease two 20cm cake tins and dust with flour. Tip all the cake ingredients into a large bowl and beat well with an electric hand whisk or wooden spoon to give a smooth, thick batter consistency.
For the cake 1. 150ml sunflower oil 2. or groundnut oil, plus extra for greasing
2. Divide the mixture between the tins and bake in the oven for 30-35 mins until it springs back to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for about 10 mins, then turn out onto a wire rack.
6. Baking powder
3. Meanwhile, make the truffles. In a bowl, gently melt the milk chocolate in the microwave or over a pan of simmering water. Stir in the butter. Put the biscuits in a sandwich bag and crush them to fine crumbs by bashing with a rolling pin. Mix into the chocolate and chill in the fridge for about 20 mins. When chilled, roll into 11 evensized balls with your hands. Coat in sprinkles and set aside.
11. 2 eggs
4. For the icing, pour the cream into a saucepan and place over a medium heat. Once hot, stir in the butter until melted. Break the chocolate into small pieces, tip into a medium bowl and pour over the hot cream mixture. Stir well until the chocolate melts into the cream. Cool for about 30 mins. 5. Once the cake is completely cool, sandwich the two sponges together with the jam in the middle. Spread the top and sides with the icing. Finish by placing the truffles around the outside of the cake.
12

On-Call Firefighters needed! We are actively recruiting for Bolsover fire station On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty. On-Call Firefighters will book themselves available for fire calls and, if a call comes in during the hours they have agreed to be on call, they must reach the fire station within 5 minutes of receiving the pager message, and we are after people who can offer daytime cover including weekends. www.derbys-fire.gov.uk

Keep your personal information safe with our 10 top tips for protecting your privacy on social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter & Google+ Avoid clicking on links in messages, tweets, posts, and online advertising. These may be links to viruses or other forms of malicious content. Social networking sites are great for keeping in touch and making new friends but they’re also boon for criminals looking to harvest personal information and scam victims. Sharing too much information on a social network may leave you at risk of identity theft – and even home burglary. Follow our top social networking tips to help safeguard your privacy. 1. Use strong passwords Use a separate password for each social account. Make it at least eight digits long and a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Choose a username that doesn’t help identify you, such as maryjsmith_1961. 2. Use a separate email Create a separate email account to use with each social network. That way, your main email account is protected from any spam or phishing email you may receive. 3. Don’t get personal Don’t post personal details, such as your phone number, home address, full name or date of birth. Avoid posting photos of your home that make it easy to identify where you live. 4. Don’t overshare Never give details of upcoming holidays nor post holiday snaps while you’re away. Criminals scour social networks to find empty houses to burgle. Some insurers may refuse a claim if you’ve broadcast your vacant home on Facebook or other social accounts.
14
5. It’s not a popularity contest Don’t accept every friend or follower request you get – only connect with people you know in real life or whose identity you know is genuine. Criminals create fake online accounts in order to befriend others and harvest personal information. Where possible always follow social media accounts that have a white tick in a light blue circle next to their name. This means they are an officially verified account. You can follow the official Saga Facebook page and the official Saga Twitter online. 6. Make use of privacy settings Read the site’s privacy policy and use its privacy and security settings to control who can see your personal information. Facebook, for example, offers controls over who can see your basic or full profile, your posts and photos and what appears in your timeline. 7. Control your profile Don’t make your profile public. Use settings so that only friends can view your full profile. 8. Be wary of links Avoid clicking on links in messages, tweets, posts, and online advertising. These may be links to viruses or other forms of malicious content. 9. Be careful of third-party apps Polls, quizzes and games are often a fun part of some social networking websites, but by signing up to these you may be giving the companies who create them permission to access your profile. Use the privacy settings of your social networking website to avoid this. 10. Don’t link accounts Many websites and apps give you the option to ‘Log in with Facebook’, rather than creating a separate account. But by doing this, your social network may share all the information it holds about you, including the date and place of your birth, your email address and employment details, along with photos.

Editors choice The Grow Room THE NEW GROW ROOM This is the Growroom, a spherical garden made from plywood that you can now build at home, after the instructions were made available to download for free last month. It's been designed so it can be easily assembled, accessible and affordable for most communities. It was conceived as a means of encouraging consumption of locally-grown food, reducing food miles and the environmental impact involved in shipping food across the world. The Growroom is the work of SPACE10, a "future-living lab" supported by Ikea that, according to its website, "serves as an external innovation hub for Ikea to get inspired, gain fresh perspectives, and discover new talents and ideas to invest in and bring forward."
In a Medium post they say:
"It is designed to support our everyday sense of well being in the cities by creating a small oasis or ‘pause’-architecture in our high paced societal scenery, and enables people to connect with nature as we smell and taste the abundance of herbs and plants. The pavilion, built as a sphere, can stand freely in any context and points in a direction of expanding contemporary and shared architecture. The overlapping slices ensure that water and light can reach the vegetation on each level, without reaching the visitor within and thereby functions as a growth activator for the vegetation and shelter for the visitor."
SPACE10 envision a future, where we grow our own food much more locally. To spark conversations about how we can bring nature back into our cities, grow our own food and tackle the rapidly increasing demand for significantly more food in the future. From Taipei to Helsinki and from Rio de Janeiro to San Francisco, the original version of The Growroom sparked interest and people requested to either buy or exhibit The Growroom. But it doesn’t make sense to promote local food production and then start shipping it across oceans and continents. That is why we now release The Growroom as open source design and encourage people to build their own locally as a way to bring new opportunities to life.

SPRING DECORATING IDEAS 8 OF THE BEST When the lighter, longer days of Spring roll around, it’s the ideal time for decorating (or redecorating) your home with fresh furnishings. Whether it’s giving your bathroom decor an overhaul or updating your ideas about the best way to decorate a living room, the brand new season is the ideal time for home improvements; spring hails the arrival of the latest interiors trends, home accessories and design collections – both high-end designer and high street. As with every new season, there are hot decorating trends and new textiles, soft furnishings and patterns that fit in a colour palette or theme. Right now, the freshest colours are inspired by nature and the ever-changing landscape, and sit very well in rural settings (although they work just as well in urban homes). From paint and home accessories to of-themoment furniture and textural finishes, there are a multitude of ways to bring fern green, blush blossom pink, sky blue denim and honey yellow hues into your home. Let’s be honest, florals are big – when are they not in Spring. But there’s always a fresh take on the form that they take. Right now, it’s about hand-blocked prints on fabrics and wallpapers, and accessories featuring painterly petals in something close to hyper-colour. Fronds and ferns bring lush, succulent woodland (rather than overtly tropical) greenery and depth into the home, while rougher textiles are having a bit of a moment. See? It’s not all lambs in fields and bunnies in hedgerows, nor is it only a time for deepcleaning your house… although that can go hand-in-hand with bank holiday DIY projects and decorating in general!
Freshen up with Fern Green A perennial favourite, green is the colour that heralds the arrival of spring. This season, the new hues are definitely more lush. Taking the tonal lead, rather than its usual place as a complementary colour, fern greens bring an energetic and refreshing look to decorating. The trick to keeping this look grounded and modern is in the design pairings you choose to work it with. Raw, rustic timbers and luxurious velvets add texture, while furniture in a black finish – rather than the usual classic, crisp white gives these greens a contemporary vibe. In terms of print, go for indigenous shapes to keep the look country, rather than tropical. Blend scales for an organiclooking finish.
Blush with blossom pink In nature, blossom brings beauty back to the wild after winter. Inside this is no different, but what does differ is the tone of the bloom-inspired pinks this season; they’re less powder-pink more crisp power pinks, with violet undertones that combine to make a room feel fresher. On-trend Japanese-style drawings – on a large, energetic scale – delicate illustrations and inky washes create a contemporary take on country decorating. Mix with cool marble, painted furniture and timber touches for a smoooooth finish.
Get a golden honey-coloured glow A new hue of yellow is bringing subtle glamour to the home this season. Mellow, modern and moreish, the pollen glow of this golden colour is set to be a firm favourite in home decor for its ability to add warmth and a little drama to your rooms. Max out on luxury with velvet upholstered pieces, like this statement buttoned bed. Offset the honey hues with blackened metal or grey tones, for a sophisticated, grown-up feel. This room uses a full-bloom yellow-and-grey wallpaper, with gunmetal design elements like the bedside table and lamp to ground the look.
Choose a fresh-as-a-daisy colour palette If your decorating aesthetic is more on the minimal end of the spectrum, you can still give your home an on-trend update this Spring. Take the petal-hued blush pink and apply it to the walls/ doorway adjacent to the bathroom – or a panel, if you prefer – in a block colour. You can switch out your painterly blossoms for a pop-art inspired mirror frame, with a simplistic flower-like shape. Against subtle green and white tiling, the pink tones look sophisticated and fresh.

The new way to do inside-outside living Spring trends can be used to add a new dimension to moodier decorating schemes – there’s no requirement for a complete overhaul. This teal-based living room’s wallpaper also features of-the-moment fern-green hues. Picking these out via accent furniture such as the fresh green armchairs, or soft furnishings like throws and cushions, lifts the mood instantly with a sense of spring freshness.
Opt for sunshine yellow all year round If all-out yellow isn’t your thing, a golden velvet armchair offers an easy update in this country living room, and lends itself well to the artistic decor. There’s a definite bohemian vibe here, which is controlled by choosing to keep architectural details – like the wooden beams and flagstone floors – exposed in the room. Warm wooden furniture and picture frames complement the pollen-coloured chair, while the decorative gilded table base offers another nod to nature and the seasons!
Reach for the sky-blue denim In Spring, we have our eyes firmly on the skies, hoping for a crisp clear day. Evoke that fresh feeling inside with blue tones that cover everything from pale cool mornings to end-of-theday dusky hues. Use the versatility of this colour spectrum to create cosy nooks or airy open spaces suitable for allyearround lounging. Blend block colours of different textures – such as flat painted surfaces, denim-like upholstery and herringbone weaves – with mini hand-block designs and graphic repeat-patterns for a sophisticated style fusion.

07901 913 508
Proving that yellow and green don’t hold the monopoly on spring colour, this room features a Moorish tile-effect wallpaper in a beautiful cobalt blue. Offsetting the Midnightblue velvet sofa – yes, velvet has definitely made a design comeback – gives the richly patterned living room a fresh and breezy feel.

Pets Corner Puppies Puppy Diaries Having a new puppy in the house is generally predicted to be a happy time; full of endless fun, games, and cuddles — and for many this is true. However, there can be a darker side to the arrival of a new puppy in your home, which not everyone is prepared for. As a result the owner may feel exhausted, panicky, resentful, or just completely overwhelmed by the responsibility of a new puppy. Feeling resentful of a new puppy is more common than you think. Common problems with a new puppy The puppy keeps weeing and pooing in the house, even after they have just been taken outside. The puppy whines and cries whenever they are left alone or are in their crate. The puppy won’t settle when you want them to. The puppy keeps nipping and biting your hands and ankles. Why you might be stressed by your new puppy You have never owned a puppy before. Either you have never owned a dog before getting your new puppy or have only had older dogs before getting your new puppy. You are grieving the loss of an old dog and you think that the new puppy will never by like your old dog. You feel that your new puppy is not living up to all the behavioural expectations that you had when you brought him home. You have read too many books or manuals on raising perfect puppies (relax — these don’t exist!). You feel your puppy is harassing or upsetting other dogs you may have (relax again — it nearly always works out between them in the end). How you can cope with your new puppy Your new puppy is a particularly house challenging breed or breed combination. Be aware that how manic, energetic, challenging, destructive, bitey, or chewy, a puppy is can all be down to genetic factors. So do your research on breeds well before you get your new puppy. If you are particularly house proud, you may be frustrated by the mess that the new puppy is making of your house or garden. Proud? you may be frustrated by the mess that the new puppy is making of your house or garden. Don’t have really high expectations of your new puppy — all puppies are individuals and learn at different speeds. Understand that a young puppy has only just left its mother and what they need most is warmth, comfort, security, and a calm atmosphere — not an owner who is always stressed and pulling their hair out each time the puppy wees on the floor or when the puppy chews the carpet. Set daily activity and rest time routines for puppies from day one, which they soon get used to. Not only do young puppies need lots of sleep to grow properly, but owners also need sufficient daily breaks from their puppies, in order to stay sane. Understand that puppies are usually at their most manic when they are most tired, and will keep on going as long as they are being stimulated. Seek advice from a behaviourist if you feel that the puppy’s behaviour is getting out of hand or dangerous and you really can’t cope with the new puppy’s behaviour.
26
Similarly, stick to the same morning and evening toilet routine with your puppy. It’s a good idea to let your puppy out just before you go to bed and then first thing in the morning so he learns to hold his bladder. He may have some accidents at first, but this is normal. Realise that when time passes the bond between you and your new puppy will slowly grow and strengthen. You won’t necessarily love your puppy straight away and this is normal. One day, buying a puppy might be the best thing you ever did!
Be honest and get help! Too many owners try to suppress or deny their feelings of hate or annoyance towards their new puppy, because they feel guilty about them. Not only will they not get the help they need but there is also a higher chance that their suppressed negative feelings will be targeted on to their puppy in some damaging way. So it’s important to understand that anxiety, resentment, and panic, are pretty common feelings when you bring a new puppy home as your whole life will change and the puppy will be demanding. It is OK to accept these early feelings, which nearly always change with time, but also critical to get professional help if you continue to feel that you can’t cope with your puppy.

Gardening tips for May EASY PLANTING Getting plants properly settled into a new spot will really pay off when you see them flourishing or fruiting. There’s really nothing to it, either...
8 step planting guide
1. SOIL
No-one likes a cold bed on a chilly day and plants are no different. If the ground’s frozen or waterlogged, keep your plant well-watered in its pot and wait for the weather to warm up. If you can, aim to plant in autumn, when the soil’s still warm from summer, the weather’s mild and there’s plenty of rain on the horizon to save you and your watering can a bit of effort.
2. WATER
Give plants a good drink before planting. To make sure it’s really good and moist, stand the pot in a bucket of water and wait until the bubbles stop before lifting it out to drain.
3. DIG
Plants need plenty of room to spread their roots, so start by so digging over the top 20cm of earth. Next, dig a hole twice the size of the pot and about three times as wide so the roots have plenty of space to spread. If the ground’s dry, fill the hole with water and wait for it to drain away – the perfect excuse to pop in and put the kettle on.
4. FEED
Once the water’s drained, loosen up the soil at the bottom of the hole with a fork and add a good layer of compost or well-rotted manure, such as Westland Organic Farmyard Manure, available at your local garden centre.
5. PLANT
Gently tap the plant out of its pot and carefully loosen and tease the roots out before popping the plant in the ground. You need to cover the entire soil ball from the pot, so make sure it sits a little bit below ground level. To save your knees, use a padded kneeler when you do this.
6. FILL IN
Fill the hole with a mixture of soil and compost then carefully press down around the base of the plant, either with your hands or a gentle, wellie-booted foot to get rid of air pockets. Give the ground a final feed with a bit more manure and a good glug of water. The water will help everything sink back into the place and revive your new plant after its big move.
7. PROTECT
If it’s in a blustery spot, protect your new tree, hedge or shrub with a windbreak. A little bit of a breeze is helpful as it encourages stems to bend, flex and strengthen but a bit of netting or protective mesh staked around the plant will slow strong gusts while your plant gets settled. For a tree, you’ll need a stake to stop it shaking in the wind too much, letting it establish in the first year.
28
8. WATER & FEED (AGAIN)
Newly planted trees and plants will need a bit of extra attention, especially if it’s warm or windy out. Keep them well-watered for a few months while the roots spread and get a good grip underground. Give your new plant a boost during the warmer, growing months, treating it to a good dose of plant feed. Then put your feet up and watch proudly as your plant flourishes in its new home.
Gardening Tip Take care not to plant too deeply, as this can cause rot, killing the plant.

MOTORING REVIEW
May
Relax in twin-lounge luxury in the Elddis Autoquest 195, a family-focused fourberth with four travel seats is it the greatvalue proposition it appears? Overview It is no surprise that Elddis has been angling its Autoquest range more and more at families, as, with prices starting only just north of £35,000, that is still the kind of price that young families can afford. For 2017, the big news for families was the launch of the Autoquest 196, a six-berth with the County Durham manufacturer’s rst ever dropdown bed. The range as a whole has been made more comfortable and easier to drive with the introduction of a low-line Peugeot Boxer chassis, to bring the Autoquest into line with the other two ranges of Elddis motorhomes. But if you don’t feel your family needs six berths, how about the 195? It has everything the 196 has, minus the dropdown bed. Which means more headroom in the lounge. On the outside, Elddis has sought to alleviate the idea that this vehicle is just a large white box by including relatively discreet decals that are in line with the sleek glow of the Peugeot cab. Under the bonnet, there’s a 2.0-litre, 130bhp, Euro 6-compliant turbodiesel engine. In addition, the test ’van was tted with a rear-view camera (a £320 option) – the 195 does have a window on its back panel, but the reassurance this technology brings will be welcomed by many. We’re also pleased to see that this family ’van doesn’t just sleep four people, it has four travel seats, too. Lift the two parallel settees in the front lounge and you will nd two Aguti travel seats. They can be lifted up once you have folded the settee frame away against the wall.
Kitchen The kitchen itself has an adequate workspace, thanks to the inclusion of an extension ap at the end by the rear lounge. And this whole worktop is impressively lit with two LED lights. Kit-wise, you get a three-burner gas hob including a rapid burner, a rectangular sink and two mains sockets, with just enough space for a kettle. Underneath is a stack of four drawers between the 85-litre Dometic three-way fridge, with a removable freezer, and the oven and grill. There’s a small locker at the bottom of the stack and a pan locker under the oven. You also get a pair of overhead lockers containing a mug and crockery rack, plus a microwave. But if you’re using the microwave you might need space as it’s a bit of a squeeze – the aisle is not the widest we have seen and the washroom door opens outwards. Lounging & dining One of the things that makes the Elddis Autoquest 195 a great family motorhome is that it has two lounges, one at the front and one at the rear. Let’s start with the former. The absence of a dropdown bed makes the front lounge area feel more spacious. But although there is a rooight, there is no sunroof over the cab – it’s not even an optional extra. This means that the lounge isn’t quite as bright as it could be. However, a generous four spotlights and ambient lighting help to keep things bright in the evening. Another grumble is that the nearest blown air heating vent faces straight out the door from the washroom wall. Moving back, beyond the central kitchen and the washroom, you’ll need the rear lounge. It is usefully served by three large windows that let the light flood in. Our test ’van has parallel settees and a central chest back here, but for £210 you can have a rear U-shaped lounge, which some buyers might like to consider. With corner cushions, four spotlights and ambient lighting, this should be a perfect adult refuge. Especially as there is a second TV bracket here (in addition to the

one in the front lounge) that folds away into a space by the overhead locker. It’s just a shame the absence of a partition here means you might have to engage in a volume battle with the kids. However, unlike the front lounge, the rear area has a wellpositioned heating vent, so should be a very comfy place to spend time. Both lounges in this Elddis motorhome feel warm thanks to the honey tone of the woodwork and the soft grey furnishings. And, while it is stored in the wardrobe at the rear, the lightweight table ts well in either lounge. But as there is a step up to the front lounge from the kitchen, you might be more inclined to keep the table at the rear, so that the cook isn’t required to remember that fact every time they serve dinner. Sleeping There are two double beds in the Elddis Autoquest 195. Either use the two pull-out slatted platforms to make a double at the front, or roll out the slats down the centre of the rear lounge to make up the double there. In both cases, the Ozio mattresses are comfortable enough to disguise what can be considerable differences in the levels of support offered by the two make-up systems. Only the rear lounge settees are long enough to be made up into single beds, and even then they are only six-foot long. One other point to note is that even with the front double bed made up, there is still just enough space left on the opposite side of the settee to make a perching point if someone wants to make an early morning cuppa.
Washroom From the outside, the Autoquest 195’s washroom looks long enough to include a separate shower cubicle, particularly as there is space enough to include a large mirror left of the door – a welcome and thoughtful inclusion. However, it’s the circular loo that rests at the far end as you enter, with the shower tray left to take up space in the washroom proper. It is encumbered by a wheelarch, and only has one drain hole. But at least you get a separate tap for the shower, as well as a rack for bottles of shower gel and shampoo. You also get a fashionable salad bowl basin with a well-proportioned mirror above it, and a wooden locker above the loo. Little, good-to-see extras inside this washroom include a towel rail and a toilet roll holder, while the room is well lit.

Harlech Castle Harlech Castle (Welsh: Castell Harlech), located in Harlech, Gwynedd, Wales, is a medieval fortification, constructed atop a spur of rock close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289 at the substantial cost of £8,190.
Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars, withstanding the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn between 1294–95, but falling to Owain Glyndŵr in 1404. It then became Glyndŵr’s residence and military headquarters for the remainder of the uprising until being recaptured by English forces in 1409. During the 15th century Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by the Lancastrians for seven years, before Yorkist troops forced its surrender in 1468, a siege memorialised in the song Men of Harlech. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1647 when it became the last fortification to surrender to the Parliamentary armies. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, as a tourist attraction. UNESCO considers Harlech to be one of “the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe”, and it is classed as a World Heritage site. The fortification is built of local stone and concentric in design, featuring a massive gatehouse that probably once provided high-status accommodation for the castle constable and visiting dignitaries. The sea originally came much closer to Harlech than in modern times, and a water-gate and a long flight of steps leads down from the castle to the former shore, which allowed the castle to be resupplied by sea during sieges. In keeping with Edward’s other castles in North Wales, the architecture of Harlech has close to links to that found in the County of Savoy during the same period, an influence probably derived from the Savoy origins of the main architect, James of Saint George.

Holiday Review May FANCY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR YOUR HOLIDAY? With spring in full swing in the northern hemisphere, and fewer crowds in the southern hemisphere’s hotspots, May is an excellent time to travel. Immerse yourself in epic landscapes, like Ecuador’s ‘valley of the volcanoes’ or Oman’s spectacular coast; celebrate history and culture in England, Albuquerque and the Pacific; and embrace new beginnings in Thailand, where a giant water fight marks the start of a new year.
Ecuador
Celebrate independence in Ecuador’s ‘valley of the volcanoes’ Tucked away in the Andes, Ecuador’s colonial town of Riobamba charms visitors with its cobblestone streets, Spanish-style architecture and large arcaded plazas, and is a favourite base for trekkers and climbers due to its proximity to many of the country’s best hikes and tallest mountains. Known as the ‘valley of the volcanoes’, the area is nestled between four of South America’s largest: Chimborazo, Carihuazo, El Altar and Tungurahua. The end of April marks 194 years since the Battle of Riobamba, considered by some historians as one of the wildest combats in South America’s fight for freedom from the Spanish (Ecuador gained independence from the crown just one month later), and locals celebrate with lively concerts and colourful parades. Riobamba has the highest percentage of indigenous people in the country, many of whom come in from the surrounding areas to sell their wares – the town has a great weekly market on Saturdays, where you can find handwoven clothing, textiles, ornaments and pottery. And for a small town, Riobamba boasts a surprisingly bustling nightlife due to its large student population – it has more universities per capita than anywhere else in Ecuador.
Thailand
Water pistols at the ready – there’s no escaping getting splashed during Songkran. Join the world’s biggest water fight in Thailand. If you’re headed to Thailand in spring, prepare to get wet. Known as Songkran, the Lunar New Year in Thailand is celebrated with a nationwide water fight. Traditionally, the custom is to ‘bathe’ images of the Buddha in rosewater and pour water gently over monks and elders, but the celebration has evolved into an all-out water-splashing free-for-all, with tourists encouraged to join the revelry. For the three days of the celebration (or five days in Songkran epicentres like Bangkok and Chiang Mai) nobody across Thailand is safe from a dousing. Water balloons are launched at unsuspecting participants, hoses are turned on passers-by, and high-powered water guns are fired from bicycles, motorbikes and cars at pedestrians and other vehicles. Either arm yourself with a water pistol and enjoy the opportunity to cool off during the hottest time of the year, or run for cover.

Oman
Explore otherworldly landscapes in Oman. Road trip along Oman’s knock-out coastline. Oman is the kind of place road trippers fantasize about, with routes that gently hug the coast, zig-zag through spectacular mountains, or take you on wild, off-road adventures from wadi to wadi. It’s now possible to drive along almost the entire coast of the country, from the capital of Muscat right down to tropical Salalah – you’ll need at least three days. This journey takes in the recently opened road from Shwaymiyah to Hasik, which winds its way through the moody mountain scenery of Jebel Samhan. Temperatures will be hot but not yet at the searing highs of summer, so camping is a possibility if you want to stretch out the journey a little longer. Allow extra time to check out the pink lagoons of Al Khalil, the ancient rock formations of Wadi Shuhram and traditional Barasti fishing villages along the way.

CASTLE STREET MEDICAL CENTRE The PPG held their March meeting on the 20th. This was a special meeting; because it would be our final meeting with Karen our Practice Manager. Karen Bestwick is leaving at the end of the month. Karen has been with the practice for six years, during which she has guided the staff and patients through a mountain of changes. Karen was the driving force behind the start of the PPG in May 2011. Through her endeavours, the group has blossomed into a strong unit, and we have worked with Karen to try and enhance the patient experience at the surgery. Karen has been the backbone of the group, always there to help, advise and encourage us. During the building of the new extension in 2012, Karen had a difficult time because basically, the builders had to build part of it around her office. The PPG did our best to help during that time, but Karen still carried the responsibility of managing the project, as well as keeping the practice running. The main business of the meeting, my report on meetings attended, was over quite quickly. I did update the group on our attempts to have a Health & Wellbeing Centre situated on the Kitchen Croft site ( BDC old offices ), in that Bolsover DC had replied, but they didn’t appear very enthusiastic about it. However, the group wanted me to keep on pressing for the project. (watch this space). The group had wanted to mark Karen’s leaving in some way. We had a bit of a party with cake and bubbly, and gifts were duly presented to Karen, along with our thanks and gratitude, for everything that she has done for the group and the practice. Karen was able to inform us, that the patient numbers are still growing and have now grown to 3270, an amazing figure, with some now joining online. This surely shows how the local general public appreciate the good service provided by the practice. This figure is a testimony to the hard work that Karen has done in the six years since she started. At that time, our patient numbers were around 2400, and dropping dramatically. The hard work done by Karen, the doctors, and assisted by her staff and the PPG, has proved pivotal in our ability to give our patients the best experience possible. The reputation of Castle Street Medical Centre, is an ever growing entity, and long may it continue so to do. Our endeavours in trying to ask the public to stop the HOARDING of PRESCRIPTIONS, & to MANAGE the ordering of their PRESCIPTIONS, would appear to have had the desired effect. The MEDICINE MANAGEMENT TEAM, who monitor our medication use, have announced that there has been a REDUCTION in the COSTS of prescribed medications in Derbyshire. Interviews for a new PM have taken place, and the most suitable candidate will soon be in place. I can now reveal that Mrs Tracy Sigsworth has been appointed to the post of Practice Manager as of 28th March 2017. The PPG will give Tracy and her staff their usual level of support, and help her settle into the post. One further item of news, is that Dr Kar has been appointed as the Clinical Director of Research for DCHS from 31st March. Dr Carberry will now take over as Clinical Lead at the practice. Grant Stothard, Chair of CSMC, PPG
