Together with the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment and their provincial and district level counterparts, the German Development Cooperation aims to introduce a co-management approach for Hin Nam No. Rural people are invited to participate in the establishment of natural resource management plans and take active responsibility for the protected area. The project also endeavors to generate alternative sources of income. The Lao-German cooperation project on Hin Nam No runs from November 2013 till October 2016 and is implemented by GIZ.

Welcome to No. 26 of Champa Holidays.

While this issue sees out 2014, which has gone by so quickly, it also welcomes in the New Year, with all its excitement and expectations. For the Lao PDR, in particular, 2015 will see great changes as this country steps out into the wider world of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The high season for visitor arrivals will soon be upon us and keeping in mind the greater exposure that the AEC will bring this country, we decided to focus on Laos, our own Jewel of the Mekong.

As we open our doors wider and enter a new era of regional cooperation, we must not forget our distinct and unique heritage. Keeping this in mind we feature a company dedicated to preserving traditional weaving skills in the modern marketplace. We talk to one of the people helping them take tradition into the future. We thought it appropriate that their products also be modeled by three dynamic businesswomen; surely leaders of tomorrow.

While on the subject of tradition and culture, we also take a nostalgic look at mor lum leung, a Lao performing art that was unable to compete with cinema, TV and other modern media. There is also a tongue-in-cheek account of some Franco follies.

In our adventure section we explore the joys of bicycling through the Lao countryside and feature relatively unknown guesthouses where you can experience firsthand, the famed Lao hospitality.

For those wanting to exchange the tropics for something cooler, we bring you a feature from northern China where 0ºC would be a hot day!

Luang Prabang Film Festival 6-10 December 2014

It’s that time of the year when the annual LPFF shows itself.

The festival, which celebrates the cultural diversity of Southeast Asia by showcasing cinema of the region, will screen 28 full-length feature films from ASEAN countries, including three entries from Laos.

The five-day cinema fest will also show the 12 finalists of the TROPFEST South East Asia short films contest. Also to be screened will be some of the top picks from the Mini-Vientianale which was held in March this year.

In keeping with the vision of taking cinema to the people, entry to all screenings is free.

Hmong New Year

21 Dec 2014 The Hmong New Year celebrations feature colourful displays of traditional costumes in green, red and white silk with ornate silver jewellery. Music is played with traditional Hmong instruments; the teun (flute), Hmong-style khene pipe and leaf blowing. Other festivities include the makkhon (cotton-ball) throwing ceremony, ox fighting, top-spinning competitions and crossbow demonstrations.

ome practitioners of alternative medicine believe that the noni fruit (morinda citrifolia) has numerous health benefits. They state that it is rich in calcium and anti-oxidants that slow the ageing process and helps improve skin and hair. Effective in treating diabetes and blood pressure, noni also strengthens the body’s immunity system.

Champa Holidays had the chance to meet Mr Khamdee Yu, who arrived from Korea a decade ago and set up Noni Lao Company, on 12 hectares of land in Sisavath Village, Xaythani District, Vientiane Capital.

Fluent in Lao, Mr Khamdee explained to us that he has his own formula for producing high quality noni juice both for domestic and international customers, with his principal market being his native Korea, where there is a high demand for this product.

Harvesting noni fruit is not easy. Every single fruit must be ripe before being hand-picked. Making one bottle of juice requires 10 kg of fruit. Noni Lao products are unheated and fermentation takes place for two years.

Noni juice normally has an unpleasant smell and taste, so manufacturers sweeten the drink to disguise this. However, Mr. Khamdee told Champa Holidays, with his secret formula, he has managed to overcome these problems and does not even add sugar. Noni juice is on sale at K-Mart shops.

In the future there are plans to export handmade noni soap which is now on sale in Vang Vieng.

Winters in the northeast Chinese city of Harbin are long and bone-chilling with sub-zero temperatures for more than four months each year. Capitalising on this, the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, gives the modern-day Michelangelo the opportunity to showcase his or her frozen art to hundreds of thousands of admiring visitors from all over the world.

From December to March, Harbin takes on a Cinderella-like quality as fantasies are created from ice and snow. As a Harbin-born photographer, I was often sent to the festival venues to snap palaces and castles as rosycheeked tourists gaped at a world of make-believe. For Champa Holidays my lens lead me behind the scenes into a totally different world; into the world of the unsung craftsmen of the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.

A Complex Project From early December, about 15,000 workers begin cutting ice blocks from Songhua River’s frozen surface and after 16 days more than six million cubic feet of ice is ready. Each block averages 100-200 kg. Then, the “great mansions” and other works are created in 5 to 20 days by master sculptors from all over China and the world.

Just as a stone sculptor will select an appropriate block of marble for his work, the carver must choose his or her ice. After the block is in place, hundreds of people working together on each construction site, use an assortment of devices; rolling machines, razor-sharp chisels, rotary tools, burrs, and various types of saws to cut silhouettes, gouge holes and round off corners. Heated metal instruments remove unwanted roughness and

shape the surface into straight lines. Blow torches melt the frost and give the sculpture that clear, crystal look when finished. The ice artists also integrate stone or wood carvings and other materials into their creations to underline physical characteristics and enhance ornamental effects.

Hard-working, Fine Works As ice chips soar and chainsaws roar the sculptures slowly take shape.

For the artists at work the sense of pride grows despite the finger-freezing, hand-numbing work. The cold is barely kept at bay with eiderdown outerwear, woollen caps, gloved hands and felt boots. The safety goggles are there not only to protect their eyes from shards of ice but also from the glare. The Arctic weather makes it difficult for artisans to take everything into account; complex details to be carved on the brittle ice need more patience. For the intricate parts - limbs or ornamental areas - one tiny mistake will smash to pieces weeks of painstaking work. Some parts need to be fitted to the main body, and sculptors have to stand in the freezing air for tens of minutes holding these against their bodies, drilling with water until they are fixed together. The metal tools in their hands add to the pain and numbness. Working on ice in -30ºC temperatures requires a dedication that is hard to understand. “It’s really a test of the limits of your mental and physical capabilities under extremely harsh conditions,” said one female sculptor, “but it’s very rewarding just to finish.”

Ephemeral Art Sculptures from ice are hardly as long lasting as stone, as precise as wood, or as monumental as bronze, but in the desolate winter of Harbin, they create a dream-like atmosphere for a few months. By March, as the weather warms they begin to melt, some before the others. Due to the uncertainty of weather changes, no closing ceremony of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival has ever been held.

While the sculptors are sorry that their works of art are transitory, their wish is that the memories of their creations will last longer. This is certainly true of Yamei Bai, who experienced a 50ºC difference in temperature after his 8-hour flight from sunny Singapore. Taking part in 16 competitions and winning three gold and ten silver or bronze prizes, his philosophical approach surprised me. “Of course it would be better if my creations had a longer life but it doesn’t trouble me that its memories will only remain in photographs. On the contrary, I think that the charm of this art form is that it doesn’t exist permanently.”

The first intrepid explorers to Laos described a land of treacherous rivers, forests teeming with exotic wildlife and myriad people with extraordinary customs and ceremonies.

Much has since changed, but also much hasn’t.

We take you on a whirlwind, tongue-in-cheek history tour of some Franco follies and look back nostalgically at one of the performing arts, for which sadly, the curtain seems to have come down. Thankfully, some traditions, such as Lao weaving, still thrive.

Laos, is mainly about its stunning landscape, its villages and its rural folk. Our outdoor enthusiasts took two bicycle trips, one in the north and the other in the south, and experienced firsthand the famed friendliness of the people. For those uninterested in the rigors of riding, we cover some off the beaten track places to stay, where you can still come face-to-face with Lao hospitality.

Some wit once remarked that the PDR in the country’s official name stands for ‘Please Don’t Rush’. Sound advice to follow in this lovely land.

Mor Lum Leung: The Elders Remember “We used to gather petrol drums to make a stage,” laughed Bounma recalling her early days in the village.

“Before 1975 we would be so happy to hear a performance was coming. They would bring painted backdrops and costumes. We would sit up all night, our eyes like plates, laughing and crying. Now people don’t like it any more. Now there are no shows in the temples, or under the champa (frangipani) trees. TV is more attractive.”

In a modern Lao version of ‘Video killed the Radio Star’, three elder women talked to me about life before TV, when itinerant players, now rarely seen, kept people entertained. Bounma, her mouth red with betel nut, a sure sign of a rural upbringing, recalled how the mor lum leung (literally telling stories by singing) performances were accompanied by drums, xylophone and the khaen (traditional bamboo pipes. With rich spangled costumes, glamour and emotional themes, it’s easy to see why villagers, after a hard day in the fields, loved being transported to a world of make-believe.

“When a mother wanted her daughter to marry a rich man instead of the poor farm boy she loved, and the couple killed themselves, we all cried.”

The performances were usually staged at the end of the year during Boun Ghan Thin, when people had money after the harvest and could contribute to the performance.

“Saman was my favourite. I don’t even know if he’s still alive. He used to perform at Wat Simuang after the temple ceremonies. We used to stay all night until 4 am watching him.”

Somsi 65 and Nemung 60, agreed. “No matter how far away, I would travel to see it,” Nemung said. An expert temple dancer herself, she added, “My mother used to sing in the performances and I wanted to be in it too, but I was shy.

We would laugh and scream at times when the villain, who always had a beard tried to kill the hero or heroine; or if they got into swordfights.

It was so exciting we all wanted jump on stage to help. Sometimes the performances included giants that would scare the children.”

“There were several types,” Somsi added, mor lum gong which involved two couples singing slow sonorous music, mor lum sing, a fast jokey interplay with several couples singing, and even political satire. “But we loved mor lum leung as it had a big orchestra and many actors.”

“We hope to see one more performance before we pass away”, Bounma and Nemung recall village theater with great nostalgia.

“Now people don’t want to pay the actors as TV is free entertainment. People are now more passive and don’t participate. It costs a lot to produce and store the costumes, make-up and instruments.”

But all agreed that if they had a chance they would love to see one more live performance before they die. “It’s not the same on TV, not as emotional. Maybe we will go to Isarn where it is still performed in villages.”

Historic Heroines, Trains, Crew Cuts, and Elephants You survived a day in Vientiane traffic on a motorcycle. While tending your scratches and sunburn, give some thought to adventurers who came to Laos around 100 years ago, without mobile phones or GPS.

French colonial administration Remnants of French colonisation can still be seen in Laos; elegant buildings and a few eccentricities, like the railway supposed to enable trade with China. Three attempts made in the 1890’s to scale the famous Khone Falls by boat failed.

Visiting today, it’s difficult to visualise steamships with engines roaring, boilers near bursting and hundreds of men hauling from the rocks on ropes, while others pushed with pikes from the decks below.

Ironically the French, trying to beat the British to economic wealth, adopted an Englishman’s idea of a tramway to circumvent the Falls; almost crippling their economy. They built a small railway across Don Khon Island and later Don Det. Specially designed vessels were dismantled, transported via the railway, reassembled and launched further upstream. Later abandoned, its remains can still be seen.

In 1909 Marthe Bessenne and her doctor husband made the journey from Khone Falls to Luang Prabang. She noted in her diary that, ‘a subtle and delicate perfume reached me from the earth, it was as though the river was sown with tubers and carnations ... however no flower beds decorated the bank’. What was she on?

Braving the rapids in a pirogue, Bessenne later described how fishermen discovered crates of champagne and pots of jam buried in the mud from less successful journeys. Of Lao men she wrote, ‘they were tattooed from waist to knee. It’s their costume without which a young man would not be able to please a woman.’ She photographed Cambodian and lowland Lao women sporting crew cuts, in contrast to long-haired upland

women.In 1894 Ernest Lefevre, undertook an equally heroic journey by mule, elephant, raft and pirogue, from Siam to Hanoi via Luang Prabang. There he watched fireworks and ‘bamboo bombs’ sounding ‘like elephants,’ recording that locals were able to throw water and excrement at the king for one day during Lao New Year.

Arriving in Vientiane, he also noted women’s crew cuts (and bare chests). Riding jumbos over passes, Lefevre described how they slid down muddy slopes on their behinds, while passengers hung on for dear life. All writers including ‘Barefoot Explorer’ Pavie (1847-1925) described elephants as ubiquitous in Lao. Even then Pavie wrote ‘The memory of these peaceful animals massacred unnecessarily reminds me that, for more than thirty years, I have gathered notes ... aimed at the protection of the elephant ... an act of gratitude to these intelligent beasts for which I ... have nothing but praise. I would even consider it to be a duty’.

The indomitable black-clad Madeleine Colani, famous in the district for riding elephants without underwear, was the first to understand the extraordinary megaliths on the Plain of Jars. In 1930 under the auspices of the École française d’Extrême-Orient, she published The Megaliths of Upper Laos, in which she argued convincingly that the jars were not wine storage vats for refreshing passing traders, but in fact upright stone coffins. Her work on the jars earned her a reputation as a bit of a tyrant. Witnesses recorded that she would lower her sister into graves, pulling her up only when she found something.

Photojournalist Dan Eldon once mused, “the journey is the destination”. Exploring Laos by bicycle really proves his point. The country offers excellent opportunities to the cyclist to experience stunning landscapes, culture, history, and especially the people.

But be warned, it can be hot and hilly! It’s important to be realistic and plan for contingencies. In the north particularly, it makes sense to train seriously before tackling tricky terrain. Sections have steep climbs or hair-raising descents, often in punishing weather. Stop when you’re spent. If it’s not fun, you’re not seeing much, which is the point.

Pakse is an ideal starting point for exploring southern Laos. Try the one that I took, through parts of Champassak and Salavan provinces. Allow for adequate rest periods but more importantly for additional rides off the beaten track.

Pedal to magnificent Tad Fane and Paksong.

It’s no ride in the park and acclimatization is recommended. Route 16 climbs and climbs.

Nothing extreme, more relentless trudge! Stop to take in changing landscapes, as the coffee and tea plantations of the Bolaven Plateau rise above you.

It’s a good idea to make sure your bike is in top condition. Mine gave up on me after 30 km and I had to sneak a lift in a pick-up to a repair shop.

The wizened mechanic used his accumulated guile to get me on the road again. Linger longer around Paksong. There are wonderful waterfalls, short rides away along the plateau. They’re ideal for a cooling dip while listening to crashing water.

Don’t forget to visit the coffee and tea plantations where locals will be happy to show you how your morning beverage gets from crop to cup.

The journey to Tadlo offers spectacular views of Salavan’s mountains in the distance. The traffic gets quieter and the villages sparser with smaller more traditional dwellings. Without travelling

far, you’ll feel you’re on the edge of a tranquil wilderness. Tadlo itself is lovely with three waterfalls worth visiting.

The journey to Champassak town is beautiful with mountains to your right providing shade, and the river to your left, almost pulling you southwards. Don’t miss the fishermen working on their nets or the children splashing in the river, eager to bellow a warm hello. Champassak is a sleepy character-filled backwater with attractive colonial remnants and little side-trails through quiet villages huddled around temples. Besides famous Wat Phu, don’t forget to take in the less widely seen Angkor ruins at Oup Mong.

“There is the scenery, the history and the culture to explore, but the most wonderful gift from Laos, is the people who amaze me with their warmth, friendliness and generosity,” Michael Malone told me.

“The nine-day, 500 km trip from Xieng Khouang to Vientiane was challenging,” Michael recounted.

“Though late October, temperatures were high but bearable. Mornings can be chilly until the mist burns off. Phonsavanh, capital of Xieng Khouang province, is a great starting point. Though small and quiet, it has plenty of amenities.

While the Plain of Jars was indeed fascinating and a good tune up for the legs, it was on the long-haul days, inching towards Vientiane, where I discovered the beauty and soul of Laos. Traveling by bike you experience the gorgeous landscapes of northern Laos more closely. These youngsters bargained on the behalf of their granny while also towering over her. It was a rewarding feeling, obtaining an authentic local product in an area undergoing rapid change.

Nola Guesthouse It is above all a wonderful and beautiful story of friendship between a Lao family and Alex, a Uruguayan traveller, who got lost in the remote village of Ban Na 13 years ago. “El Capitan”, a farmer and his family, adopted Alex and created this unique guesthouse. Completely off the beaten track, Nola Guesthouse is situated along the banks of the Nam Lik River in Kasi District, about 50 km north of Vang Vieng.

More than the beauty of the landscape, you will be seduced by the hospitality of this generous Lao family. It’s a real human experience.

The eight rooms are very basic but they all come with a view; of the river, the rice fields and the mountains. Anyway, we do not come here to stay in the room but to enjoy nature and the various hikes, like the one which leads to a waterfall amidst some lush scenery.

El Capitan will cook some mushrooms in a bamboo for you, while Miss Tao will treat you to some fresh, delicious and organic food from the farm, or the jungle. To tell you the truth, it was hard leaving this lovely place and this endearing family. We had moist eyes when we said our goodbyes.

Hin Nam No The Hin Nam No National Protected Area (NPA) is situated along the border with Vietnam, in Bualapha District, Khammouane Province. Covering an area of 82,000 ha of unique karst landscape, it is the home to rare wildlife species such as the Douc Langur, Black Langur and the Great Hornbill.

The park authorities and 22 local communities co-manage the NPA with capacity building support from the German government.

A big attraction is the large cave through which the Xe Bang Fai flows for 7 km before emerging at Nong Ping village.

The area is part of the famous Ho Chi Minh Trail used by the North Vietnamese to transport men and material to the south during the Vietnam War.

Lear, so how did you come to work at Ock Pop Tok? I was looking for a job and my sister who was a tailor brought me to the showroom and gave me some quick on-the-job training. Since then I haven’t looked back.

Did you have any formal training in design?

No I didn’t. But I’ve always wanted to learn everything about my work. So, I taught myself design and now I use Illustrator and Photoshop to create new ideas and communicate them to the weavers.

What do you find most satisfying about your career?

Teamwork. I like working together with my team. It is better to collaborate and get good ideas from each other. I listen as much as I talk.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

At first, I started designing one or two small things, But now, I’ve just finished my first complete home decor range. It is called the Baan Tai Lue collection.

How do you feel when you see a creation of yours being used somewhere?

Dee chai thi suut leau! Very, very good and happy!

Many creative people will see you as an inspiration, as a role model.

Do you have any advice for them?

I think you have to be very strong about your commitment. And, you have to learn from the beginning so that you can understand the whole process. For me, I never learned design in school. But I was interested and kept learning, kept trying new things. I would advise designers to keep working hard and stay focused.

Founded in 2000 by Veomanee Douangdala and Joanna Smith, it is dedicated to taking Lao textiles and weaving to the world. Its philosophy is ‘to empower women through their traditional skills’. It was a gradual process. I just responded to needs that were not fulfilled in the market. There are still not many Lao freelance consultants. I would encourage more people to get into this business, and would offer to coach them to get started.

Co. Ltd When and why did you go into business?

I started this company when I was 23. My experience made me fall in love with Lao traditional and modern dance. After I graduated, with a major in business, I got a chance to attend a cultural exchange abroad.

It made me realise how important dancing is. I felt I was born to be a dancer. I started practising more and more. Now dancing is my life.

Any advice to others considering starting their own business?

Learn from your mistakes and move forward step by step. You have to be open to learning new things. Most importantly, do what you love until it becomes your job. Everything is possible.

The Games which will see 299 gold, 299 silver, and 440 bronze medals contested for in 25 disciplines, staged in four stadiums, will have the horse as its mascot.

Governor, Mr Khamla Lingnasone said that after the last games in Luang Prabang in 2011, the provincial authorities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Sports set up a committee responsible for hosting the games.

He added that the construction of a new sports stadium for the Games was more than 80% finished and would be completed well in time.

A total of 21 hotels, 42 guesthouses and 21 schools would provide accommodation for athletes and guests during the games.

Relevant authorities were rushing to improve the standard of restaurants and roads in the province.

Mr Khamla called on civil servants, businessmen, merchants and local residents to be good hosts and provide hospitality to visitors during the games.

ao Airlines held a football competition on 1 November 2014 to commemorate the Meeting for Party Committees at the Grassroots Level. Inaugurating the event, Vice President Sengpraseuth Mathouchanh said, “Today holds a very special meaning to all of us. It not only commemorates a special event in our calendar, but is also a day of unity and friendship amongst our staff. As a big organization, we cannot gather together, but here we are today competing not to win or lose, but to foster our bonds.”

The competition was divided into male and female leagues and was further divided into four teams. The finals were held on 22 November 2014.
