Dear Champa Holiday Readers As you may notice when you start Reading this third issue of CHAMPA HOLIDAY that you are holding in your hands, everything from its layout, design to it’s content and even the management team have changed completely. These changed have been made in order to make this magazine live up to the expectations and standards of the international air travel and tourism industry that is served by Lao Airlines. We hope that you will agree that these changes are improvements and we can promise you that we are dedicated to keep improving the quality of both contents and the way it is presented to you in the future. We now celebrate the 35th anniversary of Lao Airlines Service or Lao Aviation - the original name of the company as it was founded on January 19, 1976. The first flight was from Vientiane – Savannakhet – Pakse – Vientiane and was conducted by its first pilot Comrade Sounthal PHONKHAMPHIM. Up till now Lao Airlines has improved its new business operation by importing the ATR 72-500 and changed the former name of Lao Aviation to Lao Airlines. Before the logo on the wing was the National Flag but now we use CHAMPA flower as it is the national flower. As we know all things change in due time and according to events, just like Lao Airlines has been developing their services, so will we at Champa Holiday Magazine be committed to supporting this development through our efforts to make a great magazine for you the read and enjoy during your travels. See you next edition! Yours Sincerely Soukkee NORASILD, Editor-In- Chief

A little journey to a jumbo festival Ingrid Suter, Elefant Asia

February 2011 is the perfect time to escape the bustle of the bigger towns and head to the Sayaboury Province. Why? Because it’s here that you’ll find the jumbo gems of Laos – the endangered Asian elephant. Wild elephants in Laos are very tricky to spot, especially if your holiday time is limited. However February brings you the opportunity to mingle with up to as many as 50 elephants all in one small town for free. Welcome to the annual Elephant Festival! The upcoming Elephant Festival will be held in the city of Paklay on the 18, 19th & 20th of February 2011. Paklay is conveniently located only a 5 hour drive from Vientiane and 6 hours from Luang Prabang. Now in its 5th year, the Elephant Festival is simply getting bigger and better. Held over a three day period, February’s festival will celebrate all the finest traditions of elephant ownership in Laos; the nation that was once known as “the Land of a Million Elephants.”

The Lao Elephant Festival rejoices in all things Xang (elephant). Watch the elephants bathing and frolicking in the Nam Lay River. Like pigs in mud, elephants like nothing more than dipping and bobbing under the river’s current while being bathed by their mahout. If not content with being a bystander, visitors can take an elephant trek around the festival grounds and Paklay surrounds. Other festival activities include sensational elephant processions, an elephant Baci ceremony, logging and command demonstrations, monk blessings, prize giveaways, children’s activities and the much sought-after “elephant of the year” competition. This competition isn’t about model looks or swimwear apparel, but rather which elephant is the healthiest and in the best condition. With great prizes at stake, this is a win-win competition for both the mahout and his elephant. Nocturnal events are just as busy as daytime activities. With Lao dancers, circus performances, markets, restaurants, a funfair and outdoor cinema, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Party into the night or have a good nights’ rest so you can wake early to watch the elephants prepare for the day’s events. On that note - need somewhere to rest your weary head after a long day of elephant excitement? Do what the locals do at spend the night at a homestay. Homestay is the best (and cheapest!) way to meet and mingle with locals from Paklay. Inexpensive, safe and convenient, homestay offers visitors a chance to make lifelong friends while experiencing the authentic Laotian lifestyle. HINT: If your Lao vocabulary isn’t the best, overcome this barrier by bringing plenty of photos of your family, friends or hometown to show your homestay family. The province of Sayaboury and the city of Paklay still remains home to the ancient art of domesticated elephant ownership. Spanning centuries, Lao royalty and civilians alike all mastered the skill of elephant domestication for human help. From warfare to house-building, elephants in Laos have assisted locals for hundreds of years. But don’t think this species has been taken for granted; the Asian elephant is considered a sacred and revered species in Lao culture. One of the few animals allowed to receive ancient Baci ceremonies, the Lao believe that elephants bring prosperity, good luck and strength. This is shown in the way domesticated elephants are treated by their human companions. Considered part of the family, a domesticated elephant will grow up with the same people and strong bonds will form between man and elephant. Having almost the same life span as one another, elephants and people can know each other for life. However the Elephant Festival is more than just an annual party dedicated to elephants. The main focus of the festival is to raise awareness of the declining elephant population in Laos. With only an estimated 1,200 elephants remaining in Laos, the Elephant Festival endeavours to draw local and international attention to the plight of this beautiful but Endangered specie. With reproduction rates low, habitat loss and poaching high, Lao elephants face an uphill battle if they wish to survive. Organisers of the Elephant Festival, ElefantAsia, believe the festival brings much-needed attention to this often forgotten elephant homeland. Working with Asian elephants in Laos since 2006, ElefantAsia aims to protect, conserve and increase Lao elephant numbers and working conditions. With most domesticated Lao elephants employed in the logging industry, ElefantAsia provides on-site veterinary care, mahout training and guidelines elephant owners can follow to ensure their jumbo investment is wellprotected from preventative harm and ill-health. ElefantAsia is also in the habit of making babies – baby elephants that is! Offering reproductive incentives to elephant owners, ElefantAsia has been successful in aiding the birth of many new calves into the world. And some of these babies may just be present at the 2011 Elephant Festival!

Lao ood what’s that

?

by Xaixana Champanakone at Khop Chai Deu Restaurant

Introduction

Kin Khao – ‘eat rice’ is the daily celebration of life, and the way of cooking what you ‘eat with rice’ – kin kap khao – reflects the Lao attitude to life : Simplicity Three rocks, some firewood and a pot will do the trick, and a mortar and pestle would come in handy. Ah, and a steam pot and bamboo basket! You buy fresh in the market what has been newly gathered and caught along the rivers, in the fields and in the jungle - vegetables, leaves, herbs and fish. Whatever livestock runs around the house yard makes for a feast. Bamboo skewers grill things on the fire while banana leave wrappings roast food in the hot ashes or steam it in the bamboo basket; the pot cooks soups and stews, and fries the odd meat. Mortar and pestle pound roots and spices, chilli pastes and the life sustaining papaya salad; and the steamer and basket makes a home for it all with sticky rice. With few tools and some herbs the Lao know to magically produce culinary delight, finelybalanced in flavour, varied in preparation, all of it ultra healthy - light and fresh. Cooking and life - simple, immediate, receiving the abundance of nature with humility. Every meal is Thanksgiving, an auspicious and merry occasion blessed by the presence of family, friends, neigbours and colleagues … or you as the guest, anytime. Where does this leave you? Venture on foot or by kayak into the deep countryside for a ‘homestay’, eat in the local street stalls or bypass exercise and culture shock and go adventuring at a restaurant dedicated to serving Lao food in style. Where daily meals are ‘ingenuity in simplicity’ – sticky rice, a chilli dip, something grilled and something boiled, all of which is accompanied by mountains of fresh herbs – festive occasions justify the extra effort to produce some of the Lao signature dishes to be featured in this magazine’s next issues together with everyday fare for healthy sustenance : Copyright © Vincent Fischer-Zernin 2010

The Lao Classic - papaya salad, grilled chicken and sticky rice Tam mak-houng or ‘pounded papaya’ is the celebrated national dish. There’s hardly a meal without it, and for Lao travelling abroad its absence seriously affects physical and mental well-being. Made of shredded green papaya, the sourness is augmented by plenty of lime juice, spiced with chillies and garlic and seasoned with fermented fish or fish sauce and sugar. Roasted peanuts top it all while cabbage and crackling pork skin are served along side. The soothing pop-pok sound made by the pestle hitting the mortar assures that salvation is in the making. String beans and cucumber are common variations sometimes mixed with soft rice flower noodles. For some creative input choose green mango, grapefruit, cabbage or carrot. Khop Chai Deu Restaurant serves banana flower as its speciality.

Ping gai or ‘grilled chicken’, there’s no festival without rickety tables are loaded with succulently marinated chicken halfs. Split bamboo sticks hold these ready for grilling to juicy perfection. For self respecting Lao only free range chicken will do, industrial fast food still needs to make inroads here. Nothing is discarded, intestines are simply threaded on bamboo skewers awaiting further action. Connoiseurs will delightedly nibble away at the popular chicken feet, so much for chicken feed.

Khao nio or ‘sticky rice’ is glutinous rice wich is eaten with your fingers. Kneaded into a big ball in the palm of your left hand, those grains will stick to themselves, and not to you. Tear off morsels with which you pick up the dry food on offer; hands on - delicious. This way of eating explains the ever-present handwash bassins conveniently placed in the middle of restaurants or the corners of private dining rooms. Once you’ve finished replace the lid on the rice bamboo basket or your wife may well divorce you, believe it or not! See you for the next issue

Aluna and the new sound She is one of the most awarded Lao pop stars in 2010, has published her first book and also runs the family business: a resort in Vang Vieng. As if that wasent already enough, she is now on the hunt for a brand new sound combining pop with traditional Mua Lam, seeking to distance herself from Thai and K-pop by adding some completely new and original features to her music. You would expect that a young woman working as hard as this was driven by a strong desire for ultimate success, yet it turns out to be something very different that drives Aluna forward these days!

16

17

It all started back in 2002: “I was just really bored with life”! Aluna says in her regular straightforward way. “ I wasn’t happy at all. It seems like life was just so predictable. I had finished my bachelors and all that was ahead was a masters and the onto making money and getting married… So I took off for Europe to study French. I never got to study much but just ended up travelling around Europe. I did 5 countries alone, and my friends back home said to me that I wasn’t acting like a Lao girl at all; actually more like a westerner. In hind sight it was pretty crazy, but it ended up changing my life!” As it turned out Aluna attended a music festival in France and suddenly a whole new world had opened up to her: “When I heard all that music playing it got me really curious… all those instruments. OMG is that what I have been missing”? When Aluna returned to Laos with her newfound inspiration it just happened to coincide with a major change in the entertainment scene of the country as the MoIC (Ministry of Information and Culture) decided to allow the publication and playing of songs with lyrics about romantic love in 2003. “After the music festival experience I just kind of grabbed a guitar and started writing a song in Lao. I had written songs that I had played for friends before, but this was somehow different”. In the beginning Aluna was writing traditional pop music but recently something new has happened: “It has become something of a mission to me to do contemporary music. It can be pretty hard, because the record companies are really not very interested in new music because it does’nt really sell. My fans love candy words and sweet music. They, like me, are afraid to come out of the box and get used to something new”. When asked what this whole “new thing” is about she 18

pauses for a moment, and it is clear that this is something very personal and not just part of a career move for her: “You know… the Aluna package has become less fake lately. Each day she tries to educate her fans to love the real her. She is pulling down the curtain more and more. It is a general problem in pop culture: we please our fans but suffer inside”. Faced with the Possibility that her fans are not ready to accept this new approach to her music she is very clear: “I am quite prepared for that! At the end of the day it is all about love for me. I just want to express myself. In the past I felt like I had to be beautiful everyday. I had to put on make up everyday even when I didn’t wanted to. Now I just have to ask: you love me or you love the make up”?

So what is next for Aluna? “I am looking for a new sounds, and I think it will take forever!” “I am trying to break free from this commercial world. I just want to be pure and honest, that’s all”. “Right now we are doing a lot of experiments in the studio. I am working with some really great musicians. Nowadays we have so much more freedom. I mean I can do all by myself in the studio. I compose, produce and perform… Its pretty much DIY music these days” Even though She is really conscious about this new mission: to be honest and free, Aluna is not shy to admit that she owns a lot to her fans: “I traveled all over US, Japan, Shanghai, Cambodia and from the very north of my country and down south to Pakse. It all happened because of the support of my fans, and this is why I own them to be

real and share my story with them. I own them good lyrics and this is what I do through the stories I share in my music. For instance the song Sia Dai (regret) I tell them a real story that happened to 3 of my friends. They all lost people close to them. 2 of them lost a father and one lost her son. It is all about this moment. This is also what the Buddhist teachings are about. Yesterday is already gone. Nobody knows tomorrow. Always remember to tell people that you love them”! Whichever way it turns out for Aluna and her new sound it seems certain that it will have a strong impact on both her self and her fans. Most of all it seems to hold the possibility of creating totally new impulse in the Lao entertainment industry. It might even be a return to the creative art impulse that lies behind traditional Lao music rather than empty copy entertainment that has been around since pop music first came to Laos 19

Adventure of a Life Time

The Thrill is on!

It’s a misty day, blurring the view of the mountains and the Mekong plains underneath. The turboprop engines hum calmly while I am sitting in the plane from Vientiane to Pakse, buzzing with high expectations in anticipation of the unknown. Still 20 minutes to go. Finally, the announcement ‘we are landing at Pakse International Airport’… I am ready for an adventure! When the news made its round that Green Discovery opened a new adventure highlight in the Dong Hua Sao mountain range just a stone’s throw from the southern province’s capital, promising a true adrenaline rush, I wanted to be there. I’ve never done a zip-line before! Not much later I am sitting with four other people from Sweden and England in a van carrying us out of town towards the Bolaven Plateau, Laos’ famous coffee region. The Bolaven is believed to be a dead, withered volcano leaving nothing to remember but fertile soil for the coffee gourmet’s delight. After less than 50 km up-hill drive on a good provincial road and already approaching the little town of Paksong, we turn right into a ‘dirt’ road. The following 12 km bumpy track to Ban Nongluang is occasionally tossing and turning my bones, and Sven, a guy surely measuring more than 1.80 m struggles to duck his head with each pot hole. ‘Bor phen nyang’, the typical Lao lowlander village quickly appears at the horizon. The guides are already waiting for us. Cheerful greetings, some warm-up chat - and ‘let’s go lads!’ The mood of all of us is up-beat. A good group obviously, considering that we were strangers to each other just a couple of hours ago. Before hitting the trek, the guides, true experts in their field, briefed us about what we have to expect and the brand new equipment we’re going to use. Safety is a great concern and we feel good about it. Our hike then leads us over rolling hills, through neat vegetable gardens and well maintained coffee plantations, here and there dispersed by unruly shrub land. It doesn’t take long and dense forest is gradually taking over. Waterfalls, steep gorges, flower-studded plateaus, the way impresses by the sheer diversity of natural beauty.

On the way downhill we have to cross a deep ravine on a long and shaky ‘canopy walkway’ - a first test of my adventurous spirits. Deeper down we find ourselves actually inside a huge valley basin. It seems there are waterfalls everywhere, thundering down steep cliffs - the largest more than 100 m, I guess. What a spectacle, what a sound! We finally have reached our destination with the first set of 8 (!) zip-lines. By seeing the first cable, I must admit, I feel more than just scared, as I am not exactly comfortable with heights. My friends are less reluctant and jump joyously down the platforms high up in the trees. Taking all my courage I follow suit, zig-zagging through the deep gorge, feeling the cool spoondrift in front of the giant water wall while cutting through rainbows and thundering noise. The sheer amazement of the scenic views combined with the great sense of professional care and circumspect from the guides’ side quickly allow me to relax and enjoy the experience of one of the most thrilling rides so fare on the journey I call life.

We’re quite late and it’s getting dark already. With all this zip-lining excitement we almost forgot the time. After crossing another, shorter canopy walkway, all of the sudden the camp, our “jungle hotel’’, opens up in the valley below us. A fairy tale village, marvelously illuminated with, as it appeared to me, countless tiny lights deep in the forest! What an impression! The contrast couldn’t be stronger and more amazing: being in a distant forest the least you expect is electricity promising some comfort for the night. And just “around the corner”, after all day with the noise of thundering waterfalls, it can be remarkably silent and peaceful. We enjoy some time to relax, walk around, and to discover so many tiny details hidden in the lush vegetation before nigh falls completely. Here a colorfully fluorescent butterfly resting on a dark green leaf, there a flower boldly peeping out of the leaf wall in the shade but perfectly illuminated by the few last sun rays piercing through the fabric of the canopy. The earthy smell of the forest is simply compelling. A jump into a natural swimming pool below gives us back some energy after the tiring hike through the steamy wilderness. My spirits are high and our joyous laughter echoes from the rock walls surrounding us. 24

It’s time for dinner and the camp restaurant offers simple but mouth-watering Lao village food and gorgeous BBQs. Completely recharged, I am gliding on a short zip-line to the cottage assigned to me. A “Forest Hotel” in the tree tops, resembling a miniature 6-house village or a couple of giant weaver bird cocoons! The stunning views from my temporary home are hard to put into words. My hut is facing the magnificent waterfalls, while others immerse in the green of the forest or grant dreamlike vistas of the Mekong plains just 25 km away in the mist. I sense the scent of fresh wood filling the room. Tiny hydropower generators, hidden somewhere in the nearby waterfall, produce completely clean and renewable energy for lights and other facilities in the hut or the camp, respectively. I even call a toilet my own. The shower, however, I have to take in the bathroom close to the restaurant – with hot and cold shower nonetheless.

My early morning tea and a European-style breakfast in the jungle restaurant are accompanied by a concert of bird songs. I feel great, but there is no time for romantic debauch. I am eager to go for the zip-line again. Yesterday was the prelude, today is the main act! Some short trekking and there it is, the second and longest set of another 4 lines. No waterfall here, but pristine forest. I jump into the fray, down from the platform high in the trees. Cheeeeaahh. It is hilarious - flying in the midst of the jungle. Only attached to an almost invisible cable, I am on my own in a world I never experienced before. The longest zip-line here is 400 m, endlessly long. Back in the camp in the late afternoon, I quickly retire into my private shelter. Moments of greatness creep into my heart. What a great day! Utterly tired and overwhelmed, I fall asleep instantly.

The next day is a day of trekking but also the day of return. We hike through the remnants of a still intact forest with giant trees. I am happy to realize that this zip-line project gives these trees a new lease of life, protecting them from being felled for a few dollars and questionable use.

But another challenge is waiting for us. Oh no, to continue our walk, a ‘via ferrata’ has to be passed. Iron U-bolts fixed in the rock wall are the only way to give one hold at the steep cliff. I feel my knees softening. But there is no way around! Everyone is secured by harness and safetyline anyway. Clenching our teeth, we do it and finally get out of the valley to reach again the top of the mountain range. For a last time I can enjoy the absolute fantastic views from the plateau: the forest, the waterfalls in the basin we just left behind us, and the mighty Mekong to the west.

The walk back to Ban Nongluang is an easy one. It is over, but never to forget, a life-time experience of adventure and nature appreciation. Thanks Sven, Karin, Philipp and Tom, and all of you, guides! Soon we’re comfortably sitting in our van, heading for Pakse. Just one thought keeps lingering in my head: When can I return to this incredible place again?

Sustainable Rattan from Laos Reaches International Markets “That’s rattan”, says Bouaphet Bounsourath, Project Manager of WWF Laos, and points at a very long, thorny liana-like woody plant, clinging onto the trees. “The thorns can be quite nasty if you don’t know how to handle the plant.” This part of the world, the Greater Mekong region, is one of the most diverse on the planet. Within the last decade, more than 1,000 new species have been discovered. The forests of Laos are home to red-shanked doucs and a myriad of various species. But this paradise is threatened by over-extraction of natural resources, wildlife trade, and the devastating impacts of climate change. Rattan is a multi-million dollar business; global trade is estimated at US$2 billion (INBAR, 2009). It plays an important role in creating jobs and income in Laos and its neighboring countries. Rattan may account for up to 50 per cent of the cash income in a community.

Forest cover in the region has fallen from over 55 per cent in the early 1970s to 34 percent today. Unsustainable rattan harvesting leads to forest degradation and income loss for many people. WWF runs a sustainable rattan program to improve production, ensuring a future supply, and prevent negative impacts on people and the environment. The design of rattan products is key for market access. The producers in the Greater Mekong region need to improve and develop attractive products that meet European market requirements. Therefore, WWF’s rattan program has engaged with designers from Lund University in Sweden, one of the top three design schools in the world to help rattan entrepreneurs in the Greater Mekong region. 28

The Swedish designer, Ms Therése Broberg spent the past six months in Laos working with rattan producers, processors, and designers, to develop sustainable, clean, and innovative rattan designs. “The rattan product designs from the Greater Mekong region need to improve if we want to be able to compete with China, Indonesia, and Malaysia,” said Ms Sabine GishBoie, WWF’s Rattan Programme Leader. The focus is on price, quality and design, she added. The rattan entrepreneurs and Ms Broberg together have developed more than ten designs within six months. This includes different types of furniture, baskets, and accessories.

”We have worked with simple, light shapes and tried to avoid nails, glues, and other materials. This is new in Laos as the traditional Lao design is ”heavier”. The reactions have been mixed but the interest is growing and many people want to buy the prototypes we have developed together with the factories”, says Therése Broberg. “What the designer has shared with us is knowledge and confidence that we can develop new attractive designs that meet our clients’ requirements,” says Mr. Xaykham Phetmanyvong, the owner of Danlao Factory in Vientiane Province. ”It has been exciting to work both with European procurers and the Asian producers. In Europe, the deadlines are unreasonably tight. In Laos, the deadlines are unnecessarily long. From Laos, I have learned to stress less. To Laos, I have brought that design can lead to economic gains”, Therése Broberg happily concludes. WWF is working with local governments, communities, and entrepreneurs to sustain rattan resources, and to create links to the global market whilst the three designers’ mission ended at the beginning of December. This rattan project is co-funded by the European Union, IKEA, and DEG. © Therése Broberg

in Champasak Are you looking for something more than the average tourist sightseeing tour? If so then Champasak province is what you want! Millennia of history in the ancient Khmer ruins, breathtaking sceneries on the mighty Mekong, local food and people in the myriad of tribal villages are just some of the gems of this fantastic region. Champasak is the authentic Lao experience! Best way to reach the southern Champasak province is to board a Lao Airlines flight to Pakse.

Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. Many other towns and villages are just waiting to be rediscovered and all has its own special atmosphere. On top of that, Champasak province offers a wealth of waterfalls, smaller shrines and temples for the intrepid explorers. Food and accommodation is cheap. If you want the full hotel experience Inthira Hotel and Restaurant in Champasak town will certainly cover your needs to an affordable price of 36-71 USD pr night for single or double rooms and bungalows. If you are on a budget or want the authentic Lao experience, a guesthouse can run you as low as a handful of US dollars. These can be found in all towns and cities, even in most villages.

In Pakse rent a 4wheel drive from EUROPCAR, they can meet you as you arrive in the Airport. This will give you absolute freedom of movement. When driving in Laos, you always have to bear in mind that it is not chaos, it is Laos. Do not try to superimpose the western ways of viewing traffic on the Lao roads; it will only get you into trouble. Instead, go with the flow, take it nice and easy and let the Lao traffic move around you. Remember that it is you who are the foreign object in the traffic vein. Champasak is the most southern of the Lao provinces, bordering Thailand and Cambodia, which gives for a very special atmosphere and a variety of places and sites to visit. Besides the cities of Champasak and Pakse and the temple of Vat Phou (an absolute must see) there are the small towns of Don Dhet and Don Khon where you can meet other travelers and if lucky, in Don Khon, get a glimpse of the

Vat Phou : The Mountain Temple ... is an ancient Khmer temple complex located in the southern Champasak province approximately 36 km from Pakse and 6 km from the river Mekong. There are traces of structures dating back to the 5th century although the current temple was constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries. After the Khmer empire declined in the 13th century, the temple was transformed into a Theravada Buddhism place of worship, which it remains to be to this day. Theravada Buddhism is the official Lao religion meaning “the Teaching of the Elders” or “the Ancient Teaching”.

Bear in mind that the businesses you visit has to be sustainable so do not try to push the prices to much as it will result in less income for development of the region. The dust hangs low on the road, sometimes obscuring the way ahead, giving for a low speed and more opportunities to take in the smells, sounds and sights that is so typical for travelling in Lao. The flat dirt roads around Champasak are ideal for exploring in a 4 wheel drive. Make sure to stop by the different street vendors to get refreshment and some pictures of the splendid sceneries. The views really are breathtaking. If you have travelled in Cambodia to Angkor you will appreciate the elevated and open fields of sight of Vat Phou, giving a detailed overview of the temple complex and its surroundings. The best way to explore the province is by car. You can of course also take daytrips from the larger cities; it will

34

not however, give you the full experience of this beautiful corner of Laos. To fully appreciate the many treasures of the province, you will need to have means of transport that can take you off the beaten path and into the real and untouched areas of Champasak, where the real exploration begins!

Marha Puha (or Makka Bu-sa) Festival

Held in February at Vat Phou (following the lunar calendar, dates may vary), the festival commemorates a speech given by Buddha to 1,250 enlightened monks, outlining the monastic regulations and predicting his own death. The festival is well known for its chanting candlelit parades around the temple.

Hanoi – The Cultural Capital of Vietnam A Visit to The Vietnamese capital now, as it has just celebrates its 1000 year anniversary in 2010, is perhaps the best opportunity to experience the cultural blend of east and west, which is so typical of this region. Quaint, narrow streets in the old quarter, wide open boulevards and 19th century architecture from French colonial days mix together to form the unique atmosphere that makes Hanoi one of the most popular travel destinations in SE Asia. Noi Bai Airport is situated about 40 km outside Hanoi, connected by a highway for ease of access. Taking a cab is the fastest way of covering the distance to the capital, however, make sure to negotiate a price before you start. Shuttle busses are also available for the budget traveler. 38

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi is one of the first things you notice, traffic (and mainly scooters) dominates the city’s intensely packed streets and visitors should take care when moving around. But the other thing that springs to the eye is the open and smiling attitude that the Vietnamese people are so famous for. You feel welcome from the first step in this beautiful city.

Attractions are plentiful in this cultural Mecca; millennia of history is everywhere to be seen. Taking a tour of the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum is an absolute must, even if it means standing in line for an undisclosed amount of time. The solemn atmosphere within the cool stone structure tells the story of the reverence still held by the Vietnamese people towards their legendary country father. Museums on everything from the early Chinese era to the latest Indochine conflicts is in abundance and should be the prime focus for all interested in the culture and history of the region. The Museum of Ethnology gives a good insight into the many different tribes and ethnic groups of Vietnam and is certainly worth investing a day in.

But now Lao Airlines deems that the expansion of socio - economic development of both countries Laos-Vietnam, particularly Pakse-Ho Chi Minh cities is enlighted, GDP is growing, tourism development is enlarged which enabling to attract tourists from other continents differently from before. All these favor the reopening of regular flight of 3 trips a week, that are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using modern ATR or MA aircrafts. The premier flight was reopened between Vientiane - Pakse - Ho Chi Minh on October the 19th 2010 with the honor of Mr. SoneXay Siphandone, the Party central committee, Provincial Party Secretary, Champasak Governor together with representatives from Ho Chi Minh city, Chief of Vietnam SR. consulate in Champasak province and many distinguished guests . Dr. Somphone Douangdara, the Lao Airlines State Enterprise Executive has mentioned on the occasion of the Vientiane - Pakse - Ho Chi Minh flight reopening ceremony that this could share the relation on socio-economic development cooperation of the two countries Laos-Vietnam, particularly the two cities Pakse-Ho Chi Minh and this would also facilitate traders, investors, tourists together with government officials visiting each others between the two countries as well as the two cities. At the same time Ho Chi Minh city airport handles many flights linking Europe, America and others to Lao PDR. And Pakse in particular or Southern Laos where there are many amazing tourist sites.
