EDITOR’S COMMENT
The missing £40m Carpetright’s store closures released millions of flooring sales, but where did they go? Unlike the previous trading update, Carpetright’s most recent financial results gave the details of how it fared during the summer when it was undertaking the CVA. And it wasn’t pretty reading. Like for like sales dropped by 16.8% in May to June and then by 8.9% in August to October. With all the headlines around the CVA and the possibility of administration it is no surprise that shoppers decided to hold off. As Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo says leaving a deposit ‘clearly became a significant issue for some during this period’ when consumers weren’t sure if they’d see their new floor. But the thing with the sales fall is that it is for the stores it kept after the CVA: its best ones (the category A and B branches, along with the freeholds). The category C stores that were closed would have had £50m of sales, according to Carpetright, but only 20% of that (and the £6m of gross profit) was picked up by the remaining Carpetright branches. So where did the other £40m of sales go? Did you benefit from any of it? In contrast, but of course on a different scale, United Carpets’ like for like sales only dropped by 1.8% in the six months to the end of September and managed a fractional increase since then. Congratulations to Associated Weavers for becoming the first residential carpet company to start using the Econyl fibre, and its support for the Healthy Seas organisation which is removing abandoned fishing nets from the seas, which can be turned into carpets rather than trapping and killing sea life. As Erik Deporte, Associated Weavers ceo said at the product’s launch: ‘For future generations there is no option but to be green.’ By the time you are reading this MPs should be once again be debating how we leave the EU. Regardless of if you were a Brexiteer or a Remainer, there can be little doubt that the faffing about by our political leaders has done quite a bit of harm to consumer confidence and as a result spending. If a decision can be made, maybe things might pick up.

NEWS
Carpetright saw sales plunge during CVA Carpetright’s UK like for like sales fell by almost a fifth at its best stores during its CVA process, and while they improved, they were down by almost 10% in the past quarter. In May, June and July, like for like sales dropped by 16.8% at category A, B and freehold stores as the chain was hit by stock availability, consumer worries over the restructuring and the retail market. For the August to October quarter, this had improved but sales were still 8.9% lower. Category A stores were described as ‘core to the business’ as part of the CVA and category B stores ‘marginally profitable’ and had rents cut by 30% or 50%. 65 UK stores were closed in the six-month period. A further 11 are expected to close in the next five months. 25 of the chain’s Category C stores that had been expected
to close remain open, with landlords preferring to forego rent to avoid an empty property and paying business rates. Store numbers were reduced to 345, with sales space reduced by 17% to 3.014million sqft. The stores that were not closed picked up 20% of the sales that the stores closed had. Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo said the restructuring was on track to deliver £19m of savings, and the company would resume its store refurbishment programme. ‘Unlike other retailers going through a similar process, you don't generally pick a product up from the shelves in our stores – we ask customers to leave a deposit ahead of delivery and this clearly became a significant issue for some during this period,’ he said. Group sales fell from £226.6m to £191.1m, while pre-tax losses increased from £600,000 to £11.7m.
Eve recruits Calverley to marketing role Mattress in a box retailer Eve Sleep has recruited its new marketing boss, from the AA. Cheryl Calverley has joined as chief marketing officer after three years at the car breakdown and insurance company. Before that, she held a number of senior marketing positions for six years at Birds Eye Iglo and was previously marketing manager at Unilever for seven years. ‘Cheryl is a natural fit for the business and the delivery of Eve’s refocused growth strategy. Her proven track record in developing and managing high profile brands will be crucial to further differentiating our brand positioning, enhancing customer experience and helping to achieve our
4
ambition of becoming Europe’s leading sleep and well-being brand,’ says James Sturrock, Eve ceo. Sturrock previously said spending on marketing would be cut. The company admitted it had yet to succeed in its effort to raise £15m from shareholders, having secured support for £10.1m of new funds. Shareholders will not be sent details of the plan until the first quarter of 2019. The company said it had £6.5m of cash at the end of November and expected sales to be higher that market expectations after a ‘very good Black Friday period'. At the time of writing Eve’s stock market valuation was £14.49m.

Kitchens remain a competitive force
Wickes could be sold Wickes owner Travis Perkins has indicated that it could sell the chain as part of a review of the group, indicating it will focus on its tradespeople customers. ‘The heritage of the Travis Perkins Group is founded in serving its UK trade customers and this represents the majority of the group’s activity today, with generalist and specialist merchants continuing to see the largest share of industry growth and with returns remaining
resilient over time. ‘Management will also focus in the short term on strengthening the performance of Wickes and capitalising on its clear competitive advantages in the diy, small trade, kitchen and bathroom markets. ‘As it is a predominantly consumer-focused business, the board will also look to review the options for maximising the value of Wickes in the medium term,’ says the group.

Nix will become the UK main agent for Tuscan upholstery company Gradi Living, following the retirement of Graham Bilton. Nigel Oddy is set to leave his position as chief executive of The Range, less than two years after he joined the value retailer. Oddy joined the chain in April 2017 from House of Fraser, where he was chief executive for two and a half years.

Developer buys Smallbone Kitchen brand Smallbone of Devizes and its sister brands have been bought by a US property developer. Gary Barnett has bought Smallbone alongside the Mark Wilkinson Furniture and Brookmans brands. Barnett is the founder and president of Extell Development, a New York property developer. The company has worked on groundbreaking projects, including One57, Central Park Tower, and the International Gem Tower. ‘Having deeply admired the company for many years, I was so keen to take this great opportunity to acquire these unique brands. Smallbone: ‘It is rare to find this level of quality’ Over the past 10 years, I have had the pleasure of working with Smallbone of Devizes on many projects such as our One57 development in Manhattan and was struck by its incredible design and making; it is rare to find this level of quality,’ said Barnett. ‘I am looking forward to working to develop and evolve these luxury British, hand-made furniture businesses in the UK and around the world.’ The deal secures the future of 260 employees and continued production in Devizes. The company’s management team will remain in place. ‘We are very excited about the future of Smallbone of Devizes and Mark Wilkinson Furniture and are delighted to receive such positive investment from the US in our iconic British brands. We are fully committed to serving our current and future clients across the world,’ said Ian Gray, executive chairman.

want to inspire and enable more people to live a better everyday life at home and we look forward to inviting our customers and the local community to enjoy a unique Ikea experience that puts their needs and lifestyles first.’ The store will incorporate many environmental technologies including solar panels, rainwater harvesting and treatment of grey water which should reduce water
usage by 50%. The company says it is aiming to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for the store. The chain’s second Design Studio will open in Bromley, south London in the spring. It follows the first on Tottenham Court Road, in the capital’s West End. Both stores allow consumers to plan and order bedrooms and kitchens, while furniture can be ordered online.

Upturn at United United Carpets has seen a small upturn in sales in recent weeks. Like for like sales rose by 0.1% in the 11 weeks to 16 December. It follows a 1.8% drop in the six months to 30 September. Sales rose by £840,000 to £10.81m, helped by an extra company owned store, but pre-tax profits fell from £589,000 to £121,000 as it spent more on marketing during the summer and increased its bad debt provision as ‘a small number of individual franchisees have struggled to meet their ongoing financial commitments.’ Like for like beds sales dropped by 3%. Since the period end, the group has opened branches in Altrincham and Bristol, increasing the number to 60, 49 of which are franchises. ‘Over the summer months, the exceptionally warm, sunny
weather and the World Cup combined to make the first half of this financial year a very challenging trading period. We worked hard to maintain sales levels but to do so required increased investment in marketing and further support for the franchise network. ‘In addition, we have continued to invest in online activities and to explore future business development opportunities to better prepare the group during a challenging period of changing shopping habits. ‘With no immediate signs of respite in the general environment and continuing Brexit uncertainties, we entered the second half cautiously; however, recent trading performance has shown some more encouraging signs which, if sustained, should result in a better second half result and a reasonable outcome for the year,’ says Paul Eyre, United Carpets chief executive.
Khoo to take axe to UK store network Laura Ashley is to close a quarter of its UK stores as it looks to boost its presence in China. The chain’s new chairman Andrew Khoo, who succeeded his father, says the number of stores in the UK will fall from 160 to 120. ‘The direction I want to go is to have not so many stores, but maybe the ones we have could be larger. It’s more about showcasing the brand. It doesn’t really matter if they buy online or offline, we just want them to get inspired,’ he says. It would look to attract shoppers in China online and then support this with stores. ‘We’re moving to Asia in a much bigger way. We have a regional office in Singapore, it’s a 1 in 4 stores will go

Leekes: profits matched Retail and leisure group Leekes has matched last year’s profits in the first eight months of this financial year. The group says EBITDA in the year to 31 March was £4.3m from sales of £85m. ‘Now in the first half of the 2018-19 financial year, we have seen a further improvement in group turnover and profits, with the directors delighted to announce that the group has already achieved last year’s EBITDA after just
‘We are pleased to post a great set of results in what has been a particularly challenging retail environment’ eight months of trading,’ says Gerald Leeke, Leekes chairman. ‘We are very pleased to post a great set of results in what has been a particularly challenging retail environment. ‘Our trading in the first half of this year has also been exceptional, with retail profits up substantially as a result of the excellent performance of our conservatory, window and door division as well as our fitted kitchen and bathroom departments,’ says Emma Leeke, Leekes retail md.

Richard Renouf
A question of numbers
Does a three-seater sofa need three seat cushions? Is there such a thing as a three-seat sofa? If so, should it have three seat cushions or is it acceptable to have two? I’ve been browsing as a result of a recent complaint. The customer contacted me by email to say that her sofa was faulty. It was bought as a three-seater but it only had two seat cushions. If you sat in the middle the cushions separated, so it clearly wasn’t, in her view, fit for purpose. I asked her to send me some pictures (which I can’t reproduce here, you’d recognise the design). Six emails later, each with three or four pictures attached, I understood what she was disappointed with, but I couldn’t see any fault. The covers were cut using precise cutting plans and templates. The shape of the covers guided the stitching and this ensured there would be no inconsistencies in the cushion sizes. The manufacturer was a long-established and very reputable business and what the customer had received would be the same as every other of these sofas to within a few millimetres.
I took a look at the manufacturer’s website and the pictures matched those she had sent. I pasted one into my reply. I told her that it wouldn’t be advisable for me to visit to do a report as her issue was to do with her expectations rather than a product fault. I suggested she went back to the showroom to look again at the model to reassure herself that she’d got what she ordered even if she now, with hindsight, would have preferred something different. I looked at other websites and found plenty of other examples of two-cushion sofas that were called ‘three-seat sofas’. But I also found some manufacturers who described their sofas as ‘large’ and ‘small’ when they had two cushions and whose ‘three-seat’ sofas had three seat cushions. I asked myself: ‘When does a three-seat sofa have three occupants, anyway?’ I can’t recall ever seeing a lone person sitting in the middle of a sofa; it seems natural to choose one end or the other. Two occupants will sit apart, and it seems to be only when the house is full at Christmas
Should a three-seater sofa have three or two cushions to sit on?
18
Interiors Monthly January 2019
that sofas are full, and only when there are already people sitting on the floor. Then I asked myself: ‘What could have been done differently during the sales process to avoid her disappointment?’ A good sale starts with the salesperson understanding the customer’s needs. How many people will use your suite? How often? Do you have family gatherings, parties, or other times when your house is exceptionally busy? A good salesperson will gather this information and more and then use this when closing the sale: ‘Do you remember you told me that… so here’s how this suite will do that…’ It shows the customer we’ve listened, which builds rapport but it also turns us from passive order takers to true sales people. And it reduces the number of complaints, too. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Individuality
Habitat wants its SS19 collection to get people talking ‘Our aim is to create products that are divisive and get people talking about design – to evoke the passion of a love-it or hate-it reaction. Some designs you might “get”, others you might not, but this is what makes us Habitat,’ says Kate Butler, Habitat head of design. ‘Our style constantly evolves from season to season. You’ll find a range of design ideas within our SS19 collection – references from tribal culture to the Bauhaus movement, 1980’s pattern to mid-century carpentry– all completely different design principles but reimagined and unified by colour and materials that work alongside each other or make a statement on their own.’ Visit: www.habitat.co.uk
26
BAUHAUS The Bauhaus design movement of the early 20th century emphasised the importance of symmetry and geometric proportion within pattern. Here, Habitat surface and pattern designer Martha Coates has translated these principles into new artworks using two different palettes across rugs, cushions and throws.
TRIBE
1980’S
Nomadic tribal pattern was the starting inspiration for the Ellora console table and coffee chest, decorated with contemporary geometric artwork by Coates. Habitat’s first screen-printed furniture designs, the pattern is applied by hand directly to the wood by craftsmen in Vietnam. This modern re-interpretation of tribal influence is something that has been taken further in textiles and ceramics, with the choice of a bright colour palette instead of earthier, more rustic tones, which are then coupled with highly textured materials.
Polished chrome, angular glass designs and highly saturated brights introduce a 1980’s influence to this season’s collection. Chrome has taken a bit of a back seat to warmer tones of copper, rose gold and brass in recent seasons, but its cool, sharper look is a refreshing move on, and when styled with warm colours, tones of rich walnut or paler oak and ash it can look very elegant and confident. James Cottingham, Habitat designer’s Seattle chrome and glass collection channels the 1980’s power look and was inspired by a Habitat catalogue from the era when city-slicker living was at its peak.

HANDCRAFT
Small space The brief here was to create a compact sofa that would work for the smallest of apartments with the most awkward access. Arms on sofas are the main design feature that restricts entry to some spaces so Cottingham created the Juno armless design with a generous seat depth to allow comfortable lounging. The absence of arms also allows more light to flow within the room, giving a sense of more space.
Habitat looked at a series of high design pieces that are space saving or maximise a sense of space within interiors. Cottingham’s Lincoln dining table has a clever folding design, turning it quickly from a four seater to an eight seater when needed.
28

Habitat works with a range of workshops across Portugal, Vietnam and Thailand that create beautiful hand-crafted ceramics. Hand glazing and sculpting make each of these pieces completely unique – a one-off piece for the home. Slight imperfections, reactive glazes and freehand artwork show where the artist has taken time to create each piece, making it a genuine talking point.
The Hampton shelving unit, by Matthew Long, Habitat senior designer, is also a serious piece of sturdy design, the inspiration taken from the Arts & Crafts movement and evolved into a pared back, contemporary storage piece. Constructed from oiled oak, this thick framework is designed to show off possessions, with large side panels allowing light through.

Statement sideboards The brief to designer Long was to create a series of stand-out sideboards each with very different aesthetics that will adapt to a variety of interiors. Carlo is a low height sideboard designed to let light reflect from its ribbed facia to give a less heavyweight appearance. Raised skinny legs also give the suggestion that the design is floating as well as letting more light through into your space. This model is finished in petrol-blue gloss, the colour chosen to give a luxe effect when coupled with metallic accents, but works equally well with pops of fluoro colour or against a background of exposed brickwork or cement.
MID-CENTURY SIMPLICITY The understated simplicity of mid-century design is something that has a strong influence at Habitat. Designs are stripped back to clean lines, lack fussy ornamentation and mix together organic and geometric forms as well as simple materials. The new Cornelia oak table collection, by Cottingham, is characterised by its turned spindle detailing and nods towards its mid-century design inspiration: the slender profile, gently curved edging and a simple matt lacquer that showcases a beautiful wood grain. Coupled with the Julien sofa and Cooper armchair (in mid-century mustard yellow) with their sophisticated curves and symmetrical profiles, this is a cool reworking of ideas from the past that we believe still work for how we live now.
A mix of wild grain (oiled) and metal, this design is an extension of the Feliz dining collection. Long’s design uses traditional door carpentry on a repeat pattern around this piece, giving it a clean, symmetrical look that again champions natural wood grain, with an industrial edge added by its skinny metal legs.

Inspired by design trips to China, the Orion sideboard is finished with an all-over high-gloss black lacquer, with central oversized gold handles for dramatic impact. With space-friendly proportions, the statement design has been kept pared back and relaxed so that it can be re-imagined to suit a variety of environments and mixed with many different styles.

GLOBAL MONOCHROME
URBAN PARADISE
New to the existing dining and bedroom ranges are a series of tactile home accessories that include a statement tasseled pouffe. Pattern and texture are key, with a mix of woven, fringed and embossed pieces that create an artisanal vibe with bohemian undertones. Bronze and gold elements bring a luxe touch to this global style that works well in both urban and more relaxed settings. The faux foliage includes realistic aloe, and trailing and mini succulents.
Urban Paradise is a chic and glamorous tropical-inspired range with pieces for dining, living and the bedroom. A highlight of the home accessories are the faux succulents and planters that will refresh and reinvigorate the home as summer arrives. The handmade ceramic tableware comes in a crackle glaze or leafy palm print, offsetting the gold-rimmed glassware and carafe. The decadent barware includes luxurious copper-dipped gin and martini glasses along with a serving tray, shaker and coasters that feature a rainforest print.
LISBON
STOCKHOLM SPRING
This collection takes inspiration from the ornate design heritage of Portugal’s capital city, honing in on the beauty of azulejo tilework and traditional dyeing techniques. The handmade ceramics have been designed to be mixed and matched – from tall debossed vases and planters to decorative bottles. A series of faux houseplants in concrete and stone-washed pots are an urban contrast to the bright cushions, throws and accessories. The vibrant Mediterranean colour palette of ochre and turquoise brings this look to life.
The Stockholm Spring collection includes home accessories and tableware that embrace the Scandinavian flair for design with understated style offering comfort and functionality. Soothing shades of green and dusky pink characterise this range, with clean lines and a relaxed, down-to-earth feel. Cushions, geometric throws and subtle debossed accessories evoke chic Nordic style, whilst the tableware brings an eclectic blend of pattern and colour with a striking circle print designed in-house.

The collection features an exclusive print, hand drawn by the in-house illustrators and inspired by foraging for wild flowers. A soft, flaxen colour palette is enhanced by wooden accessories and accents of sage, whilst plentiful faux florals, including succulents, posies of flowers and single stems, evoke the refreshing transition to spring.

DRURY LANE
COASTLINE
In celebration of Sainsbury’s 150th anniversary in 2019, the design team has created a limited edition dining and bakeware collection that draws on the store’s unique heritage. Storage tins, bakeware and kitchen textiles feature hand-drawn illustrations of the first shop in London’s Drury Lane. Mustard ceramics add a pop of colour to an Oxford blue and warm grey scheme, whilst galvanised metal, enamel and acacia wood bring a rustic feel to the range.
The Coastline collection is inspired by the British seaside with a subtle nautical look and chalky pastel blue colour palette. Statement accessories include a hand-painted seascape cushion and beach grass motif lampshade that evoke the calm and soothing nature of the coast. A woven striped throw and simple grey storage baskets bring a sense of the rustic to this range and celebrate the timeless nature of the landscape.

And relax...
SS19 sees the outdoors brought inside Debenhams’ seasonal SS19 trend Savanna is a curation of global-inspired craftsmanship, offering subtle statements that define the term ‘bringing the outdoors in’. Calm-inducing colours are earthy and natural in origin; from serene, soft shell pinks through to washed terracotta hues and linen shades, enhanced with standout accents of black. Hand-made touches and crafted details are significant. Refined West African-inspired textiles and subtle monochrome mud prints from Mali are crafted in a way that highlights their natural beauty. Faded, relaxed fabrics and woven textiles are enhanced with tactile textures such as embroidered art, tufting and bold trims. Ceramic vases, lanterns and candles are curvy and organic in shape, each decorated with carved and hand-worked details. Seasonal dining has an artisan feel with rustic wooden kitchen pieces and etched earthenware-like crockery complemented by abstract printed and soft block-colour melamine. Visit: www.debenhams.com
Debenhams’ introduction of a new Edition designer – a collaboration with lighting designer Sarah Colson – has resulted in its first lighting-only capsule collection. Applying a commercial perspective to her signature hand-made designs, British-born Colson has created the Prism collection consisting of four striking pendant lights and two table lamps inspired by natural quartz formations and gently enhanced by a soft, subtle colour palette.

Directly inspired by Abstract Expressionism and the 1950’s American art scene, the J by Jasper Conran collection combines sophisticated design with a statement colour palette to present a new-age directional interpretation for SS19. The canvas is strong yet elegant, bringing together dusky pinks and golden ochre grounded by terracotta and navy. Prints are dramatically big, with bold lines through the designs, on natural linens and tactile velvets.

Star by Julien Macdonald’s SS19 collection presents a fresh and highly feminine look inspired by the grace and essence of the Orient. Beautiful renditions of iconic cherry blossoms and gentle wisteria have been hand-painted in watery washes of blossom pink for this season’s key bedlinen print. Textiles are tactile, featuring fine and delicate sequin and organza floral embellishments to heighten the sense of romanticism and allure. Shimmering gold pearlescent finishes and precious gem-inspired accessories bring Julien’s characteristic glamour and high fashion opulence to the collection. The pretty colour palette is bursting with shades of hot peony and bold cerise pink, complemented by pale blush tones and a crisp white background, bringing a refreshing, sophisticated update to the home.
More is more when it comes to the MW by Matthew Williamson collection. The maximalist trend continues into SS19, becoming ever more jubilant and vibrant in this extravagant, global-inspired collection. The eclectic range evokes a strong sense of nostalgia; the feel of carefree summers represented in the rich and joyful sunset tones of coral pinks, deep yellows, burnt orange and inky teals and blues. Textures are rich and sumptuous, embellished with jewelled designs, bold embroidered details and patchwork velvet motifs for a glamorous take on the tropical bohemian look. Dramatic yet ethereal palm tree prints, tropical pineapples and leaf motifs are brought to life on textiles and accessories, adding a signature touch of kitsch to the decadence.

SS19 sees Abigail Ahern join the Designers at Debenhams portfolio, with her distinctive design ever present. Embracing fantastical creations and unmistakeable dark drama – which the range has become synonymous with – Ahern demonstrates her fondness for texture with oversized textiles adorned with heavy fringing, chunky tassels and quilted finishes. Spirited creatures remain iconic to the collection, appearing in unexpected exotic forms such as the embellished snake and beaded octopus cushions, metallic insects and the enchanted Eland Antelope head beautified with a golden velvet flocked finish. The colour palette boasts saturated deep jewel tones of midnight blues, ochre and teal, while new sandcast accessories in brassy gold geo shapes and etched pewter surfaces add a luxe dimension to the range.

The Next display stand houses carpet and LVT
Tapi has more ways to market Tapi is about to embark on a new phase following a period of rapid expansion since its inception only three and half years ago. Not satisfied with organic expansion in its traditional bricks and mortar stores, having opened its 100th store last August, Tapi has sought out like-minded partners in the form of Next and Homebase. Next has entered into a trial with Tapi with a bespoke carpet and LVT display containing exclusive ranges in three stores, whereas Homebase has agreed to a series of concessions, the first of which opened just before Christmas in Orpington, Kent. The Next display has been designed as a standalone piece and does not require a dedicated member of staff on-hand for advice. Customers can either visit a dedicated web page or telephone the Tapi call centre to book a home visit. Martin Harris, Tapi ceo is keen to expand upon this initial trial with concession areas similar to those opening in Homebase. In contrast, Homebase will display the same

ranges as those in a Tapi store and will be staffed with advisors. Alongside these initiatives, Tapi also intends to revamp its website, launching this month, providing an enhanced
customer experience. ‘With over 25% of our customers starting their journey online, and a similar number who Google us after driving past our stores, the investment rationale was compelling. We will get Martin Harris

increased exposure from the concessions and will look to strategically place our mobile showrooms using the information we have available to us,’ says Harris. The expansion of its mobile fleet from 32 to 52 vans this year will allow Tapi to cater for customers who don’t have a bricks and mortar store nearby or don’t have the time or inclination for a store visit. A typical mobile showroom holds the vast majority of what can be found in a store, so the customer is still provided with substantial choice, with the added benefit of completing the measuring and ordering process in the comfort of their own home. This is not to say that the Tapi store

expansion is slowing: nine stores are due to open in the first three months of 2019. This will give it the turnover benefit of opening early in the year: in the past two years, openings tended to be in the second half of the year. In the year to 30 December 2017, sales rose from £30.2m to £56.9m as store numbers rose by 24 to 91 by the end of the year. Pre-tax losses rose from £10.19m to £10.92m. In 2018, a further 23 branches were opened. When questioned on when the company is likely to become profitable Harris responded: ‘We are still in our investment phase but our expectations
are this will slow down after this year. The first phase of our stores are making money and when we stop opening stores profitability will happen naturally. There are too many uncertainties with the economy and Brexit to be able to provide a more definitive answer. We are very lucky our shareholders fully support our growth initiatives and understand our approach. ‘I keep having to pinch myself that in just three and a half years we are number two in the market and I think we’ve succeeded in our initial aim of improving the more difficult aspects of a floorcovering purchase for the consumer.’ Visit: www.tapi.co.uk

Jonathan Young
Jonathan Young, Axminster Carpets md is looking to take the manufacturer in a new direction. ‘I’ve worked with some pretty big brands in the international carpet industry for over 25 years, including Milliken and Brintons, and I’ve always believed that Axminster Carpets has been underestimated. The
46

values that Axminster Carpets holds are the values I hold personally: investing in British manufacturing, and a true focus on quality and in our wellbeing by promoting wool. The team I have working with me are passionate about what they do, and I feel I can impart my experience by taking this much loved brand into new sectors and international markets,’ he says. The company’s challenges have been well documented in recent years but Young is confident of success by looking to new markets. ‘The company has had to make some tough decisions over having the ability to invest in the areas we want to invest in, but we’ve secured £3.375m of funding from Independent Growth Finance to invest in the business. ‘We continue to work hard to regain consumer and retailer confidence, whilst increasing our focus on contract and international markets. I believe this
integrated approach will make the business stronger as a whole.’ Young says the company has had a good response to new product developments, its new POS and new website from its retail customers. It has also had success in the contract market, including a number of Principal Hayley hotels, the Brighton Pavilion and a contract with South Western Railway that involves renovating all its rolling stock over the next 18 months. ‘There is a genuine opportunity to grow business in international commercial sectors. We’re investing in our people, both through our apprenticeship programme and senior appointments such as Lina Marino, export sales manager and Amanda Grabham, head of marketing who joins the business in January. Above all, we retain our authenticity for manufacturing quality Axminster carpets here in the UK.’ Visit: www.axminster-carpets.co.uk

agreement with Econyl producer Aquafil. Econyl is a nylon fibre using items otherwise destined for landfill such as old carpets and plastic products left in the sea such as fishing nets. It is a recycled nylon with exactly the same properties as those produced by the raw material. What makes it unique is that it can be recycled, recreated and remoulded again and again. The Healthy Seas organisation is working to remove nets for the purpose of creating healthier seas, and recycling marine litter into textile products. The discarded, lost or abandoned fishing nets are sometimes called ghost nets because they appear invisible underwater and continue to catch fish and other marine animals without human involvement. They are plastic waste that remains in the seas for hundreds of years and does not biodegrade. Millions of marine animals, including sharks, dolphins, seals and turtles get entangled in these nets leading to suffering and eventual death. Every year, some 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear is lost in the seas and oceans. In October, Healthy Seas’ team of volunteer divers recovered more than four tonnes of ghost nets in deep waters off the coast of the Aeolian Islands. During

UPHOLSTERY With the launch of Encore Foam, Fibreline feels confident that it can now offer the best in foam, fibre and feather cushion interiors
Sitting comfortably After years in development Fibreline has created its ‘ultimate’ foam cushion Richard Prudhoe

Interiors Monthly January 2019
Fibreline has announced its latest breakthrough in foam cushions: Encore Foam. Fibreline says it has a sit just like a fibre cushion giving a sink-in snugly feel, but being foam it doesn’t require turning or plumping. Fibreline believes Encore Foam to be the ultimate foam cushion. It is not revealing exactly how it is made but says it is constructed from 100% foam and achieves its properties through a combination of different foams and a ‘very clever interior profile’. With the launch of Encore Foam, Fibreline feels confident that it can now offer the very best in foam, fibre and feather cushion interiors. ‘We feel we have completed the holy trinity of upgrade cushion fillings, says
Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. ‘Now retailers and manufacturers have a great choice.’ Demand for Encore cushions continues to grow exponentially, Prudhoe says. More and more retailers are seeing the advantages and are demanding cushions containing Encore for their ranges. ‘The Encore cushion range has many advantages. It retains the casual look, and because of its foam core its resistance to sagging and easier maintenance gives retailers confidence in the performance of fibre and feather and now foam cushions,’ he says. To help retailers Fibreline has developed a sales pack for Encore. Each pack contains sale aids for both Encore Fibre and Encore Feather. Inside the

There’s also a see-through mini cushion for either or both fibre and feather cushions, demonstrating the unique properties of Encore. Packs are available on request from furniture suppliers. Over the last 16 years Fibreline has positioned itself as a ‘one-stop shop’ for an upholstery company’s every filling requirement, with high quality foam, fibre and feather cushion products all made on one site and delivered via one vehicle to the door. ‘It is a formula that has seen us create and distribute Encore – a range of combined filling cushion products that have proved incredibly popular,’ says Prudhoe. UPHOLSTERY The Ayla designs can be easily moved around a home
Small is beautiful
Bazaar is targeting shoppers who are short of space Soft-seating specialist Bazaar Group is aiming to bring incremental sales to furniture retailers by meeting the needs of customers with limited space. ‘While the bricks and mortar retailer still reigns supreme in the home interior sector – we believe about four-fifths of business is still done through stores – many customers are migrating online as they don’t always find the smaller footprint and more flexible pieces they are looking for in shops,’ says Andy Atkins, Bazaar Group non-executive director. ‘Floorspace in homes has shrunk drastically over the past few decades, and there is a growing number of consumers who don’t have a lot of room for bigger pieces, or who have large multi-use open plan spaces to fill efficiently. It is this concept that is at the heart of our first in-store retail range, Ayla, which we are launching at the January Furniture Show. ‘Ayla has seven eye-catching soft-seating pieces, all of which have been purposefully
56
Interiors Monthly January 2019
designed with small footprints, through which we see a real opportunity to make design accessible to customers, no matter how large or small their space. ‘It’s a concept that offers retailers a number of benefits. As these pieces don’t take up much floor space, they can be easily used alongside other furniture, or moved around for different in-store and window displays. This offers the chance to add incremental sales, because a retailer can still have their bestselling sofas but they will also be offering additional smaller pieces, and to an audience which is currently seeking solutions elsewhere. ‘We are very focused on offering retailers opportunities to differentiate, with innovative, well-designed softseating concepts that are relevant to the way today’s customers are living.’ Bazaar Group has been investing in its customer service and sales teams, including appointing a new business development manager.
‘Our years of experience in the softseating category and impressive yearon-year growth have seen us develop an enviable logistics operation. It means we can offer a range of flexible delivery models, including direct to consumers with lead times starting at just one week. This allows stores to carry only display items, which by their nature are easily moved around stores and reconfigured for lifestyle features, giving a fresh look to stores whilst limiting the risk of carrying large quantities of stock. ‘Some of them are easily portable so can moved to adapt to the changing scenes of everyday life. The signature items in the collection include a chaiselongue style sofa, with clean lines and elegant curves that support the body in multiple seating positions. ‘Other pieces including the Love Seat, Snug Chair and Origami Pouffe, are soft-filled and mould to the body for extra support and comfort. We’re very excited by Ayla. The pieces look fantastic and we have a genuine offer for forwardthinking retailers who are looking for that something extra to stand out, without sacrificing their existing sales.’ As well as Ayla, the Bazaar Group’s brands include Icon, Eden Learning Spaces and Bambeano. SOFTWARE
Sales staff can deal with any problems
Making customers kings Having the right systems can boost service ‘It is as hard as it’s ever been to trade well and make a profit in furniture retail: we all know that we need every competitive edge we can get. We spend on marketing, websites, pay per click, seo and more in the pursuit of profitability. Why is it then that when we think about customer service we tend to think only about dealing with complaints,’ says Stephen Smith, Retailsystem co-founder. Customer service is so much more than dealing with complaints these days, it’s about being pro-active, keeping the customer informed every step of the way and handling any issues in a prompt and efficient manner. ‘With Retailsystem you can keep the customer informed from the moment they place an order with you if you choose to: the online order tracking allows them to log in to see the status of their order whenever they choose, but you maintain control over what they see. Client analysis has shown that this alone can reduce incoming order chase calls by nearly 50%, freeing your sales team to
58
Interiors Monthly January 2019
spend more time booking new orders. ‘Rather than let you know when customer orders are overdue, Retailsystem lets you know when orders will become overdue, enabling you to take action ahead of time rather than firefighting after the event. Think of the aggravation for the customer and subsequent loss of goodwill to your business that late deliveries or unforeseen delays have caused: wouldn’t you rather be in a position to mitigate these,’ says Smith. The text alerts advising customers of the arrival of their goods and confirming delivery slots is another area where Retailsystem helps a business to show exceptional customer service. And by automatically texting the customer when their goods have arrived, dwell time is reduced, cash-flow is maximised and time otherwise spent calling to advise goods are in is saved, again freeing the sales team to book orders. Delivery confirmation texts also mean fewer missed and failed deliveries.
‘For the times when you do receive complaints the customer service module helps you to manage the issue end to end, by recording action taken by personnel, customer photographs of a fault, technician reports or supplier correspondence and replacement re-order, while allowing all staff access to the information so anybody can help the customer at any time. With the right tools you can ensure that the customer really is king.’ Visit: www.retailsystem.com

Marketing boost
Sleepeezee wants three equal sales sectors
Sleepeezee is to significantly increase investment Bed manufacturer Sleepeezee is to invest almost £3m in consumer marketing in 2019 after finding its brand awareness was higher than expected among shoppers. A survey of 1,000 consumers found its unprompted brand awareness was only behind two other – both long established – bed brands. The finding is partially behind to the decision to halt plans to introduce a bed-in-a-box business under the Beautyrest by Simmons label. The initial results of the survey were excellent, according to Joe Wykes, UK ceo of Sleepeezee parent Adova, but while
Tranquility
70
Interiors Monthly January 2019
many consumers named Sleepeezee unprompted, a significant proportion did so whilst misspelling the name, something they didn’t do with rival brands. ‘They know the name, but it is not yet front-of-mind. We want to improve our brand awareness so that Sleepeezee becomes much more visible,’ Wykes says. He adds that Sleepeezee being named before other emerging bed brands in the unprompted survey means the ‘Sleepeezee brand opportunity is much larger’ and makes more sense than trying to establish a new brand from scratch.
The company now plans to conduct more detailed consumer research so that it can make data driven decisions regarding how it allocates the additional marketing spend based on who it finds the typical Sleepeezee customer to be. Besides traditional and digital advertising, it also plans to support retail stockists’ marketing efforts, citing possible examples as offering a discount for a Black Friday promotion as well as providing enhanced POS support in stores. ‘It is around push-to-pull. We want consumers to walk into bed shops and ask for Sleepeezee products,’ says Wykes. The company also wants to increase stockist numbers, with the aim of having its business split roughly one third with independents, one third multiple retailers and one third exports. Sleepeezee is taking on new north and south merchandisers as well as new staff in marketing and contract. As the business moves into targeting export customers, it will be attending IMM Cologne in January, after a successful ‘mini’ launch of its top end products in Paris, where a number of retailers from different countries placed orders. Keep the mites out Hygienic sleeping environment is not a luxury but a real necessity Spending about a third of your life in bed, you wouldn’t want to share it with uninvited guests like bacteria, fungi and dust mites, would you? Most of us spend time ensuring our bedding is cleaned weekly and our bedroom well ventilated, but are you aware that the type of mattress you sleep on could help to guarantee a hygienic sleep environment? This time of year is a haven for dust mites to thrive while the central heating is on and windows are kept firmly shut. Allergens are commonly the biggest culprits of sleep theft so it is important to increase the chance of healthy sleep with a mattress that is dust mite resistant.
Dunlopillo mattresses offer a unique natural protection against dust mites and allergens which have little chance of surviving in a latex environment: particularly beneficial for those who suffer from allergies, hay fever, asthma and respiratory problems. The unique manufacturing process of Dunlopillo latex ensures the antiallergenic, antibacterial and antimicrobial characteristics of natural latex are embodied within Dunlopillo mattresses. Extra protection is also provided through Dunlopillo Signature mattress covers treated with Actipro: a natural probiotic technology that eliminates allergens, dust mites and Diamond

odours to help maintain a cleaner and healthier sleeping environment. The unique open cell structure of Dunlopillo latex means it is naturally breathable and does not suffer from the associated heat issues of memory foam. The microscopic air bubbles promote constant air circulation, and the body’s natural movement throughout the night helps to ventilate the mattress, keeping the bed at a comfortable temperature. Simba teamed with apartment designers Cuckooz to create the ultimate space to unwind
Mattress company Simba has debuted its first foray into wellness tourism by launching state-of-the-art serviced apartments in Shoreditch, London, geared towards travelling insomniacs and sleep seekers alike, for the ultimate sleep-enriching experience. Design-led serviced apartments company Cuckooz and Simba combined their knowledge about the world of hospitality and sleep to tackle the ‘first night effect’, when your brain struggles to switch off in a new place.
The Zed Rooms have another twist: the bedroom is designed to resemble a womb. It took nine moths to develop the apartments, which feature a ‘Woom’ bedroom, with a cocoon-like bed, inspired by the safety and snugness of the womb. With muted lighting, soft pink walls and a Simba mattress, each ‘Woom’ bedroom within The Zed Rooms has been designed to encourage positivity, relaxation and REM-rich sleep. ‘If you’ve ever noticed that you don’t sleep as well in a hotel, you’re not alone,’

says Hope Bastine, Simba sleep psychologist. ‘Scientists recognised the “first night effect” over a decade ago, where one half of the brain unconsciously acts as a “night watchman”, staying more alert when in unfamiliar surroundings. ‘With this in mind, tapping into the emotional and physical, no stone has been left unturned trying to soothe the effects of this in the design architecture of our new cutting-edge sleep retreat. ‘During the last weeks of pregnancy, a baby increases its consumption of REM sleep. In the last week before birth, REM-sleep amount hits a lifetime high of twelve hours a day. There will be no other moment during a person’s life when they will get such a huge volume of REM sleep.’ Radiating the security and snugness of the womb, the bedroom design aims to help mute the brain’s red alert status developed when sleeping in a new place, whilst giving guests sleep-enriching experiences. The Zed Room apartments have been designed to create an entire ecosystem that helps you to sleep from the moment you step through the door. The furniture’s rounded edges and softened corners mimic the sensation of bed, while rocking chairs are on hand to lull you into a relaxed state of mind. There are bespoke sleep recipe

ethereal fabrics and artwork that aims to transport the mind. ‘Just as Simba has never been a typical mattress company, The Zed Rooms aren’t a traditional getaway. The Zed Rooms are geared entirely to honing quality sleep away from home, finetuning you overnight to navigate whatever life throws at you the following day,’ says Steve Reid, Simba co-founder. ‘At Cuckooz we strive to be at the forefront of innovation within the

Best foot forward Vogue Beds will return to the NEC
The bedstead collection will be on show
‘After another busy year behind us, we are excited to be kick-starting 2019 at the January Furniture Show. The show is our 19th successive year at the NEC and we’re putting our best foot forward and showcasing a variety of products that we make,’ says Ebrahim Patel, Vogue Beds md. ‘We are going to be featuring our Helix model, which has an intelligent pocket system that is receptive to individual body weights and quickly adapts and adjusts accordingly, providing an equal sleeping surface for two people. ‘The bedstead collection has had a lot of positive feedback and so we are going to be pushing it at JFS as it is still new in the market. There are lots of different colours and fabrics, so the bedsteads are a key range to us. All our products are made here in the UK, which remains a very important thing for us.’ Visit: www.voguebeds.co.uk

ENGLISH MEADOW With classic undertones yet a feeling of carefree abandon, English Meadow is inspired by lazy Sunday walks in the countryside, picking haphazard floral posies and serving tea and cake on old-fashioned mismatched china. Patterns are mixed freely, from the ditsy small-scale florals to oversized blooms, with the palette remaining on the cooler grey-tinged side of bright.

BEDS AND BEDROOM PLAYFUL GEOMETRICS
HAVANA NIGHTS
Drawing influence from the 1980’s Memphis interiors trend and merging this with ever-popular geometric motifs, the Playful Geometrics theme sees vibrant colour pops sing out from an otherwise neutral background, with clashing patterns used at unexpected points to add interest. Chunky woods with dovetail joints enhance the look and mix effortlessly with paint-finished pieces. A connected (and collective) feel unites this scheme, and by adding touches of playful pattern in all areas of the home, the look feels stylish and composed without ever being too matchy-matchy.
Top up your mojito and pull up a mismatched chair: the Havana Nights trend is well worth lingering in. Featuring faded reclaimed wood walls, tropical prints and generous lashings of warm fuchsia, the look is vibrant, eclectic and full of life, perfect for enjoying a cheeky cocktail or cosying up into when night falls. If there’s one look to try mixing a variety of different elements in, this is it: here, solid mango wood meets rustic oak with metal and woven finishes. Colours, too, enjoy a relatively unrestricted palette, with more grounded earthy tones mixing with vibrant jewel-like hues. The rules are, there ain’t no rules - anything goes as long as it’s fabulous.

BEDS AND BEDROOM SUNBLEACHED TERRACOTTA
UNDER THE SEA
Evoking memories of that glorious warm golden glow that instantly transports you back to your favourite Mediterranean holiday, Sunbleached Terracotta celebrates the hand-crafted, textural air that is often so closely linked to the homes and buildings in these dreamy locations. Gentle pattern comes from authentic encaustic tiles, woven basketry and chunky recycled glass tableware, with touches of other textural materials such as wool, cork and of course terracotta and earthenware. The warm oranges, yellows and corals of this palette pair perfectly with both natural and rustic oak furniture.
Rather than just look to the coastline, the Under the Sea trend goes further, for a twist on all things nautical and maritime. Colours range from murky greys to sea greens and ocean blues, mixing interesting metal and sea-glass patinas with luxe touches such as velvet cushions and occasional contemporary geometric patterns. Decorative foliage nods towards the look of seaweed, while walls and floors showcase painterly, watercolourinspired effects. Curved painted furniture with vintage-style metal handles helps to tie everything together for a grand and sombre yet mysterious and striking end result. BEDS AND BEDROOM GREENHOUSE
REFINED RETRO
With its utilitarian undertones and use of hard materials such as galvanised metals and concrete, the Greenhouse trend retains an underlying warmth thanks to its mix of honey-toned oaks and painted timbers, and of course greenery to soften walls, floors and corners. Incorporating an indoor/ outdoor feel that’s perfect for the summer months, Greenhouse shows how to bring exterior touches to interior spaces with details such as upcycled gutter pipes used as wall-mounted holders for hanging plants, or characterful weather-worn outdoor pots for houseplants. A strictly cool green palette (aside from natural elements such as terracotta) is warmed by the use of soft textiles.
1970’s luxe meets modernist sophistication with this glamorous yet pared-back take on the retro look. Colours shy away from the lurid browns and oranges of yesteryear, showcasing instead a sleeker palette of bitter chocolate, deep aubergine and pops of teal and tangerine, with lashings of glam mixed metallics: think less Austin Powers, more Gentleman’s Den. Warm mid-toned woods complement the palette to perfection, as do styling details such as turned wooden legs and angular furniture silhouettes. Classic retro plants such as the Monstera and humble spider plant appear fresh and modern when used sparingly as statement accents.

BEDS AND BEDROOM Mayfair 13000 on contemporary bedstead
Covering all the bases Gainsborough’s Mayfair has plenty of options The Mayfair range from Gainsborough has all the hallmarks you would expect from a quality pocket mattress: the finest fillings including alpaca and merino wool, hand side-stitching, hand-tufting and eight embroidered flag stitch handles. Starting at what for many is a top of the range 3,000 springs, the spring count on the five models goes all the way up to 13,000 pocketed springs. The mattresses can be matched with a choice of five floor-standing headboards, each with a tailored contemporary look. The range has been taken up by many
94
Interiors Monthly January 2019
retailers new to Gainsborough and has rapidly become the bestselling model for many stores. For one multi-store customer it has consistently outsold every other brand from the moment it reached its floors. Developing a pillow-top version was the first objective for Nick Gigg, Gainsborough md. ‘This is a key development for many customers who may struggle to turn a quality mattress with generous fillings. The challenge with a pillow-top is to avoid compromising on quality and longevity. We have achieved
this by enhancing the topper with micro springs, which greatly reduces settlement and offers the same amount of fillings as the regular version. ‘Previewed at the Bed Show, the pillow-top is available in the same spring counts as the main range and, excitingly for retailers, the price points are exactly the same as the established Mayfair range,’ says Gigg. ‘When we were developing Mayfair, retailers tasked us with creating a range that “sells itself”. It’s a tall order but that desire informs every part of the design process. We achieved
The new ottoman
the first objective by delivering a look that is irresistible and a specification that is best in class. Now we have to give retailers as many ways of appealing to as many of their customers as possible.’ Mayfair is available as a standard divan set with a full range of storage options. For customers looking for something a bit different, the first step was to offer an ottoman. The storage area offers up to four times more storage than a standard divan and is finished with a cherry
veneer. With gas-lift pistons, the base matches seamlessly with any one of the existing five floor-standing headboard styles, and as with the standard divan is available in 14 fabrics, with more to come in 2019. For Gigg, the bigger challenge was satisfying the needs of customers not prioritising storage. ‘If you’re not looking for storage your standard options are a platform-top divan or a slatted bedstead. They might not have the look or the
Box sprung base with Mayfair 9000
convenience that you want. We have come up with two solutions to give customers more choice. The first is a bedstead that has a lower profile than a divan set, and features a drop-in platform that is much easier to assemble than a slatted base. ‘The second is a box sprung shallow base. This is not only stylish but the sprung base aids support and increases the longevity of the mattress. Importantly, we have achieved a commercial pricing that makes this an attractive proposition. As with all of the bases, the bedstead and box sprung base can be matched with any Mayfair headboard in any of the fabrics and with a number of leg options. ‘We have a long established relationship with bricks and mortar retailers, and they give us fantastic feedback not just on what is selling but also what customers are asking for. You don’t get that type of feedback through digital channels and this is one reason for the success of this collection.’ Mayfair, like the rest of the Gainsborough range, is backed with a 10-year frame guarantee and is made in the UK. Covering all the bases The Mayfair collection is the most comfortable range we have ever made. Commanding a real presence in store, these models sell themselves. With pocket spring counts up to 13,000, a new pillow top and a variety of base options, including ottoman, bedstead and box-sprung contemporary divans there's a Mayfair to suit everyone. TCS will return to the NEC as it celebrates 21 years supplying independent retailers
Independent retailers are the backbone of the TCS business, and its focus is to continually strive to enable independents to receive the quality they expect at a price that will ensure that they maximise their profits and improve their businesses’ bottom line. With these customers in mind, the TCS product range of sofas, beds, dining, carpets and flooring has been further honed and selected with one aim in mind: to supply quality products at price points that sell and enhance the margins independent retailers can obtain. TCS asked its customers what they wanted and first on the wish list was to get back to its modular furniture. This enables retailers to stock a single floor model while being able to offer thousands of unique combinations. For 2019, TCS is re-invigorating its Your Sofa, Your Way across the motion collection of Italian leather sofas and the Designer Collection of UK manufactured fabric sofas, allowing choices that are almost limitless to help independent retailers secure sales. TCS Carpets has seen strong growth, with cross-selling to furniture retailers helped by bespoke space-saving displays and ordering mechanisms that mean
retailers never have to stock rolls or cuts in their stores or warehouses. 2018 was a remarkable year for the TCS mattress collections, seeing sales figures continually growing, with more and more furniture retailers now stocking the collections of Royal Coil, Natural Sleep and Contemporary Sleep ranges. Last year saw the introduction of the Royal Coil Natural Collection of the
Superb and Supreme mattresses, designed to complement its Royal Coil Essence and Opulence mattress collections and the Contemporary Sleep Regency and Imperial mattresses. Since its debut these mattresses now include a combination of pillow top and box mattresses with a combination of wool, silk and cashmere fillings. Visit: www.tcsfurniturerange.com

New places La-Z-Boy will be moving into different sectors The world’s best-selling recliner brand will display its widest ever product range at the January Furniture Show. And all is not what you might expect from the upholstery giant. Along with a host of living room ranges, two new product categories will be shown on the stand. The La-Z-Boy UK team has spent the past two years planning on how to harness and capitalise on the power of its brand value. Its latest innovations, to be revealed at the NEC, include expansion into the bedroom sector and occasional and dining furniture. ‘Our major focus remains on our living room furniture, which is what we’re renowned for throughout the world,’ says Mark Draper, La-Z-Boy UK marketing director. ‘But from our consumer research in the UK and Republic of Ireland, we understand that consumers identify La-Z-Boy with comfort and quality – messages we have reinforced through a major abovethe-line advertising campaign. This has laid the foundations for us to expand

our product categories to encompass a wider spectrum of furniture.’ Whether a customer is looking for a chair, sofa, bed, mattress, cabinet or dining table, they will able to get everything with the La-Z-Boy brand and warranty. In its upholstery collection, La-Z-Boy will focus its new releases in its
traditional Comfort Studio collection and its contemporary Urban Attitudes collection. Details of the new models have yet to be revealed. Three chairs with a new-to-the-UK push back recline mechanism will also be introduced. ‘We’re very proud of our 2019 upholstery products and are very excited to present them to retailers. movement has proved really popular in the USA, so we hope our UK retailers will see the value of providing an additional choice for consumers,’ says Draper. A new leather category will also be unveiled. Dune is a high quality, soft to the touch hide with an aged appearance – offering even greater opportunity for customisation in addition to La-Z-Boy’s already extensive swatch book. ‘Our Urban Attitudes collection proved highly popular when we released it last year, thanks to its modern looks and innovative concealed recline mechanism, giving it an attractive look on legs. So we’ve expanded this range further, as well as developing our ever-popular Comfort Studio products. There really will be something to suit all customer tastes.’ In its bedroom range, La-Z-Boy will exhibit four upholstered bed frames, which can be customised with any of the full selection of more than 50 leathers and 80 fabrics. Four mattresses accompany the frames, comprising three pocket sprung mattresses and a luxury boxed mattress. Occasional furniture and dining ranges will be displayed for the first time in the UK. ‘Retailers will be able to upsell our upholstery products with branded cabinet furniture to allow customers to
Canterbury
experience the luxury of La-Z-Boy throughout the homes. This capitalises on our inherent brand value and makes for an easier sell for stockists,’ says Draper. La-Z-Boy’s Connoisseurs of Comfort consumer advertising campaign continues, with continual digital display advertisements. New versions will be introduced this month to freshen up the campaign and add new characters to the collection, each with their own reason why they love La-Z-Boy products. The campaign is designed to highlight a range of product USPs and to create
an emotional connection between the brand and its consumers. In-store display materials, videos and POS items that tie in with the campaign give consumers a branded retail experience and reinforce the value of investing in a name brand product. ‘We’ve really seen the value in investing in advertising and our retailers are also reaping the benefits. We’ll be continuing to advertise throughout 2019, which will be a very important year for us,’ adds Draper. Visit: www.la-z-boy.co.uk

brought benefits to both the company and its appointed independent retailers. In the past year, more than 50 bespoke Highgrove in-store displays have been installed throughout the UK, with more than £150,000 invested. Shane Harding, Highgrove head of marketing is confident that the investment has paid dividends. ‘The modular nature of the displays means that we’ve been able to tailor each one to our customers’ needs, and despite a challenging market we’ve seen a 34% incremental sales increase where displays have been installed,’ he says. The company aims to at least double this number in 2019. Highgrove will also be adding to its Equasleep temperature control and ErgoSense soft foam ranges – both of which have proved popular new

Harding believes that Highgrove’s latest innovations in both brand and product development will help maintain the company’s major growth plans. ‘With our extensive product offer and unrivalled service, we are attracting new independent and multiple customers and we’re confident that our continued investment will help us reach our goal of doubling turnover in three to five years.’ Visit: www.highgrovebedsgroup.co.uk

Soft living Bazaar is debuting its first range for retailers Already established as a leading specialist in the soft seating category, Bazaar Group is launching its first in-store retail range at the show. It believes smaller living spaces and a more informal way of life are changing what consumers need from their furniture. For many people, life has become larger than their living rooms. Add to that the phenomenal growth of personal possessions and it means space in the home has never been under such pressure. Throw in to the mix a more relaxed and transient use of the home and it’s clear that furniture needs to keep pace with the mood of the moment. ‘The size of the average British living room has shrunk by a third since the 1970’s – but furniture hasn’t. More than 80% of the UK population now live in urban areas, which has led to shrinking
house sizes. But it’s not just about size, it’s about lifestyle and the need for furniture to be flexible and multifunctional,’ says Philippe Galland, Bazaar Group head of sales and marketing. Its response to this need is Ayla. Launched in 2005, the company began when Jayne Dolder, owner and creative director, recognised an opportunity to evolve soft-fill contemporary seating and began selling to her friends and family. Since then, the company has been leading innovation in the soft seating category, enjoying significant growth with various routes to market. It has doubled its workforce every five years, and now operates from 42,000sqft premises in Northumberland. The group believes that traditional in-store retailing in the home interior sector still commands 80% of all sales, Origami is a three-in-one pouffe – it transforms into a supported cushion and flat floor cushion by undoing a couple of buttons

despite the growth of online. That, combined with the increasing number of compact homes, growth in apartment living and consequent access issues, pointed to a clear gap in the market and growing need for stylish furniture with a much smaller footprint. The rental sector also means people move more frequently – and need furniture that will easily move too. ‘People use their homes very differently now and people are looking for something that is more agile and responsive to the way they live. They need furniture which they can navigate into and through their homes easily and which then maximises the limited space available. On the one hand it needs to be easily moved around to follow the social flow of the home and provide multi-functional usage options; on the other there is a need for designled, feature pieces with a much smaller footprint. And all of it needs to be easily moved from home to home,’ says Galland. ‘Focusing on these trend changes has allowed us to develop an exciting new concept range which meets the realities of the way people live their lives today. It is an offer we believe complements rather than challenges more traditional seating options by making design accessible to all customers, no matter how large or small their living space.’ Visit: www.bazaar-group.uk

Opulent style Premier Housewares will be on trend Fifty Five South is an exclusive collection of furniture, lighting and accessories designed to complement luxury interiors from Premier Housewares. Characterised by the use of premium materials, the brand is designed to be synonymous with opulence and style. Presenting new design-led collections at January Furniture Show, the company will be interpreting a variety of 2019’s biggest trends. The luxe trend has firmly established itself in recent years, in particular via warm metallic accents and

velvet upholstery. Premier will be presenting a sophisticated and refined take on luxe, switching rich gold finishes for cool metallic tones. Its fabric Fenton sofas and the hair-on-hide Kensington Townhouse chair represent a tactile departure from the more sleek finishes. Desirable for its bold textures and distinctive patterns, hair on hide has become one of the most sought-after materials for luxe interiors, adding a natural finish to everything from cushions and rugs to chairs and coffee tables. The expected vibrant colours are swapped for muted pink and grey tones, creating a lighter and calmer aesthetic. Fusing traditional luxe characteristics with retro art deco design, Premier will also be showcasing a more opulent collection of furniture and accessories. An eclectic mix of warm metallics, supple leather and dark walnut wood, the Kenso collection will take centre stage, surrounded by extravagant mirrors and statement design pieces. The result is a chic collection with vintage appeal, featuring gold-finished accessories and unique, boutique hotel style sofas. In a departure from polished, man-made materials, Premier will be
presenting its new Traveller Fusion trend, celebrating the diversity of global culture. Free-spirited and nomadic, artisanal production stand out in a trend that is about returning to nature and simple living. With a blend of geometric Aztec-inspired patterns and woven rattan, the collection boasts a subdued, neutral palette infused with hues of nature. The highly textured Bosie range, with tactile fabrics and throws, is juxtaposed by the Lovina table’s organic hewn wood. The Lyon collection is characterised by its traditional design lines and the use of solid American oak. These substantial statement pieces are styled alongside trendy hair-on-hide rugs and cushions. The natural brown and white fur tones harmonise with the golden oak hues, softening the setting with more playful forms. The Boho coffee table brings a contemporary edge, counterpointing the Lyon collection with its monochromatic bone inlay and bold stripe pattern. Accenting the diverse setting is the range of Churchill games: classic games in a sophisticated black and white palette to make a bold yet playful statement. Visit: www.premierhousewares.com

Smeaton Ultimate
A family affair The Smeatons have been making beds for over 125 years The tradition of bedmaking in the Smeaton family was started by Henry Smeaton, who made palliasse mattresses filled with straw, under the arches of a bridge in Masbrough, Rotherham. On market day, he took them on a horse and cart to Retford market to sell to the farmers who brought their animals and produce in to trade. Luckily the horse knew the way back, as Henry had a tendency to visit hostelries and drink the proceeds on his way home. Hence he had to start all over again the following week. This family tradition of bedmaking was passed down to his son, Arthur, and his grandsons, Henry (known as Harry), Harold and Leonard. Harry, the youngest, formed a business, Smeaton Brothers, with his eldest brother Harold, using his carpentry skills and the family heritage, in a workshop above an undertakers in Wellgate, Rotherham. In 1968, Harry was able to build a new factory in King Street, but after only six years it was subject to a compulsory purchase order, so in 1974 he bought some land in Masbrough, Rotherham and built a new factory on Sarah Street, coming full circle back to the area where his great-grandfather first started the family bedmaking tradition.

In 2006, the company, now known as Healthbeds, was awarded the original Which? Best Buy and Best on Test for its Memory Foam and Pocket Memory mattresses and, with this help, constructed its current purpose-built bedding factory at Thurcroft, Rotherham. In recent years, Toby and Lucy Smeaton have joined the family business, adding a sixth generation to the company history, helping to keep the bedmaking tradition alive. As a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, Healthbeds values those timehonoured skills passed down through the
Active Life
generations. Using only the finest materials, each bed is individually hand made, quality tested and assured at every stage of production. A key part of the company’s proud heritage is putting the family name to each individual bed in its newly launched Smeaton Collections, which incorporate the chemical free Embrace damask fabrics added to its zero-to-landfill mattress end-of-life goal, and carbon footprint management through its own ancient woodlands. Sweet Dreams will have a larger presence at the show
Sweet Dreams is continuing to celebrate its 30-year anniversary and looking forward to 2019 and beyond with an expanded offering. To show off all the very best examples of each collection, including the new Living range of dining and occasional furniture, Sweet Dreams has extended its
presence at the show with three stands in Hall 5. Sweet Dreams has traditionally been known for its beds and mattresses, manufactured in Burnley. This remains its core range and will be featured strongly at the show, with encapsulated beds a major story together with new models

from the Adjustable collection. The latest upholstered frames include Helena, in a soft velvet, and Fonda, in both a standard frame and an ottoman. Bacall is an unusual bedframe in oak or white finish. Sweet Dreams’ wooden frames and furniture for the bedroom reveal a vastly extended collection this year. Vincent and Spencer are composed of rich, dark acacia and solid oak respectively. There are also seven new fully assembled ranges of furniture, encompassing finishes from walnut to white high gloss. Sweet Dreams has also expanded its sofabed range. There is one new model, as yet unnamed, with an altogether different kind of action, plus two-fold action models with fully sprung, tufted damask mattresses, and clic-clacs too. A major story for the show is upholstery. Sweet Dreams has gradually been evolving and honing its UK manufactured range. For 2019 there are fresh models including the traditional 3-2-1 suites Harvey and Fraser, the Carmen corner unit and a corner unit incorporating storage and a sofabed. In addition, there are new standalone chairs, and recliners from overseas. Visit: www.sweetdreamsuk.com

Shire Beds is making its show debut with boutique bedsteads The Shire Bed Company will mark its January Furniture Show debut with the launch of a boutique bedstead collection. The new range will include seven ontrend bedsteads including fashionably styled headboard and foot end options. Shire will also launch Heaven7, a collection of biodegradable roll-up mattresses that suit both the retail and contract markets. ‘We’re looking forward to marking our January Furniture Show debut with two exciting new products, starting the year off with a bang,’ says Fara Butt, Shire Beds marketing director. ‘We’ve listened to customer feedback at the 2018 NBF Bed Show and further
developed our successful rolled mattress offering to include Heaven7. We’ve also been working hard behind the scenes to bring an exciting new range of boutique bedsteads and are excited to reveal them to the trade this month.’ Other ranges featured on the Shire Beds stand will include Sleep8, the next generation bed-in-a-box offer which combines convenience with comfort, and Luminescent, an all-white Egyptian cotton collection that brings a touch of luxury to a market becoming increasingly aspirational. Plus, Shire Beds will also exhibit a selection of boutique and regular high-end products, bed-in-a-box ranges and Eco and Active mattresses.
Within the past 12 months, Shire has invested in its facilities and machinery and has also spent heavily on training staff to ensure full maximisation of its new technology. In its dedicated Roll & Rest division alone, Shire has purchased state-of-theart wrapping and rolling machinery and foam-cutting technology as well as a glue line to help make its systems as automated as possible. ‘Our continued growth in business allows us to invest in machinery to help update and expand our product offering in order to reach new markets and audiences,’ says Butt. Nolte Möbel/Express Möbel: Major investment plan for the production site in Germersheim
Best Bedroom Manufacturer
Balancing market requirements More options, less set-up time, maintenance of precisely defined stocks at the minimum possible level – these are important issues in every sector of industry and Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel in Germersheim are no exception. After a period of restructuring, the companies are now making substantial investments – e.g. in a flexible new production plant for front and side panels. This facility will make production in batch size 1 and according to individual customer requirements a reality.
Steffen Urbschat has been Spokesperson for the Management Board of Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel since June 2016 and has overall responsibility for sales and marketing in both furniture companies.
STAND C40 - HALL 4
Around €50 million will be invested in various areas of Nolte and Express Möbel in Germersheim by 2023. Much of this is earmarked for modernising production facilities. This involves a dramatic shift in the company’s production philosophy – making it a batch size 1 manufacturer rather than being restricted to series products. As a result, furniture will be produced much more efficiently and the consumer will profit from even greater choice.

technology and product lines Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel in Germersheim have been through a difficult period. The two companies have undergone around three years of restructuring to get back on track and ensure they are optimally equipped for the future. This has been very successful – a fact demonstrated by good placements at the POS, streamlined portfolios and, most importantly, rising sales figures. In 2017 alone, Nolte and Express generated revenues of around €130 million – double-digit growth compared to 2016. The entrepreneurial family behind the Nolte Group has a strong commitment to the Germersheim site and is the driving force behind these major improvements. In addition, there is a comprehensive investment plan,

Julian Bowen will unveil one of its largest product launches ‘It is no surprise that Julian Bowen’s extensive product innovation programme has led to a major expansion of new ranges, providing a solid platform from which the firm has been able to show impressive growth. The trend continues at the January Furniture Show, as the Julian Bowen design team set about the unveiling of an exciting new product launch across all categories: one of the biggest in the company’s history,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. The company is known as a leader in childrens’ furniture, which has been a real strength of the business for many years and remains a key focus in 2019. The Jupiter mid sleeper, available in white and grey finishes, offers a pull-out desk, a chest of drawers and plenty of storage built into the design. The Maine bookcase bed available in Dove Grey and Surf White painted finishes offers a single kid’s bed with a difference: a pull-out under-bed
drawer that takes a standard 3ft mattress, and storage built into the headboard. Julian Bowen’s bedroom ranges have been a cornerstone of the business over the last few years and they continue to build on that strength in 2019. The Maine range in Dove Grey which has been a hugely successful collection, will be launched in a Surf White colour option. The Richmond two-tone grey and oak bedroom offers a subtle, on-trend colour combination. The colour options on the Richmond dining range have also been extended with a painted Midnight Blue and oak combination. Oak continues to be an important material for Julian Bowen in its product development and the new Curve bedroom and dining ranges combine timeless style and functionality. ‘The new Brooklyn living and dining is a blend of oak and metal, reflecting the industrial style. There is a choice of chairs,
in faux leather and metal, and a bench to complete the range. The highly successful chrome and marble occasional offer has been extended into two new dining ranges with high gloss tops. The new Tribeca dining table with two benches offers incredible value for money. ‘The Living offering features innovative new additions to the upholstery and seating ranges. A new sofa group combines beautiful craftsmanship with a classic modern design in a tactile slate grey velvet. The range sits beautifully alongside a large selection of new occasional pieces, including the stunning wood and metal Bellini round nesting coffee table. The Masion velvet chair with its gentle sloping arm coordinates with the sofa group. An inspiring new range of accent and office chairs with fully adjustable seating are both stylish and value for money,’ says Lenaghan. Visit: www.julian-bowen.co.uk

After strong sales growth Hydeline is introducing a new brand Upholstery company Hydeline has experienced a year of continuous growth with turnover set to double compared with 2017. The commercial success of its reclining models has been excellent to date, but this was surpassed in the latter half of 2018 by the success of its new chesterfield sofa, Buckingham. The quality of its sofas is a key component in this success, with features such as power-adjustable headrests, memory functions and power-adjustable lumbar support setting new standards for innovation. Only Leggett & Platt mechanisms and Okin motors are used and warranties are among the best in the market today. This month the company will introduce the At the Helm brand. To be launched at both IMM Cologne and January Furniture Show, the brand represents a new direction for the company. Featuring many of the existing models, which have been a commercial success in the UK, the launches will also showcase many new models, and these
will be complemented with an eclectic lighting and occasional collection. As the new brand develops it will encompass new leather and fabric

Prime impact Sales events can generate significant turnover The clients of sales promotion company Greenwood Retail will testify that the company’s high impact sales promotion strategies can and typically do generate 25% to 100% of their annual turnover (depending on the nature of the event and other variables), with high margin maintained, in just 17 days’ trading. ‘Your event manager was outstanding. 85% of annual sales in three weeks. It is well worth hiring Greenwood,’ say John and Caroline King, owners of Sparrow Hall Furniture in Leighton Buzzard who held a sales event in September 2108. ‘35% of a year’s sales in 10 days. Another [third] tremendous Greenwood sale,’ says Martin Benson, owner of G Benson Furniture in Harrogate who held a sales event in August 2018.
‘Greenwood’s retail clients are enjoying record-breaking sales success despite Brexit and the associated downturn in big-ticket spending,’ says Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md. The company specialises in organising high-profile retail sales events, on behalf of quality retailers, all over the UK and Republic of Ireland. Many of their clients are members of AIS and Minerva. ‘Greenwood has far more experience of planning and organising retail sales in this marketplace than any other sales company in the world. This means that no one is better qualified to help British and Irish retailers get the best out of their next big sales event,’ says Eaton. ‘Your business could immediately benefit from holding a Greenwood sale. We can usually outline sales projections and costs from a brief discussion either in person or over the telephone. We’ll be at the January Furniture Show to see our retailer clients both old and new and would love to see you for an informal chat without obligation, I hope you can find the time to drop by.’ Visit: www.greenwoodretail.com

Bold alternatives Rowico will debut its most eclectic range Rowico has been growing significantly. In the last three years: it has doubled its product portfolio, maintained its award-winning reputation for service, stock availability and prompt despatch while continuing to offer unique and innovative designs. This year sees not only range expansions but new collections and also some alternative chairs. Bowood Night has teamed with its sister collection Bowood Day. Day has a subtly limed driftwood finish which contrasts with Night’s intrinsic charcoal
colourway. New pieces within the Bowood collection include benches, coffee tables and TV cabinets. Tate is an expansion of Rowico’s industrial series. It is available in two finishes: one featuring vintage brass-look metal with metallic nutmeg-coloured surfaces, the other in an ultra-modern deep charcoal enriched with gunmetal frames and detailing. The collection includes a 12-place dining option and a variety of stylish occasional pieces. Windermere has rustic reclaimed timber in natural honey tones combined Tate in nutmeg and antique brass

Rowico’s dining chair selection has expanded significantly over the past year and the bestselling Vicky has new additions, including colour variations and benches. The Sierra chair completes January’s launch list with its contemporary styling in monochromes and a vibrant turquoise, bringing the assortment of seating options to more than 40. ‘It’s an exciting time for Rowico UK as we are experiencing exceptional growth and record sales. Our unique collections are gathering significant traction in the marketplace. As we trade into 2019 we will endeavour to continue integrating sound environmental practices into our business ethic to ensure that our furniture includes as many sustainable materials as possible. ‘We are looking forward to showcasing our new designs at this year’s show. We have produced stunning lifestyle photography to accompany each of our new lines,’ says Caroline Henchcliffe, Rowico UK UK business director. Visit: www.rowico.co.uk

CHANGING THE WORLD OF FURNITURE RETAIL In the always changing landscape of brick-and-mortar and online retail stores, it’s now more important than ever to communicate with your existing and prospective customers. In order to support this changing landscape, Ordorite are delighted to launch GROWHUB, an innovating new way to get your customers back in store, with the end goal of increasing your turnover.
RECONNECT WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS QUOTE MANAGEMENT & ANALYSIS
GROWHUB uses a digital science approach to show who has not come into the store in a given time frame, and prompts you to follow up and send personalised messaging via SMS, email, letter or newsletter to those customers. The system will provide you with industry guided material based on customer trends. Vouchers and loyalty schemes will also be available to entice customers back in. This powerful hub will give you key performance indicators such as the amount of turnover generated, number of quotes converted from a campaign or follow up, previous and current customer purchase trends, and customer data of whom has shown interest in your brand. We’re delighted to be showing this innovative new module at the January Furniture Show and will be giving free digital assessments to customers at the show.

PREVIEW
Seventh heaven Cranmore Park will again host the show

Seven years on, the event continues to develop and support the independent retail sector by welcoming buyers from across the UK and Republic of Ireland to its friendly and professional setting, giving them more time on their buying strategy in a relaxed yet business-like
atmosphere. The ranges on display are specifically designed and targeted for quality independent furniture retailers. Running concurrently with the start of the January Furniture Show at the NEC, the show gives buyers another reason to visit Birmingham during January, as the proximity of Cranmore Park to the NEC makes it easy for people to visit both. ‘All the suppliers exhibiting, whether they are new to the show or have exhibited previously, will be launching new product at the show. We have some exciting new suppliers on upholstery including Koinor from Germany and Jones & Co from Lithuania. Also exhibiting is Christian Lemieux, a new cabinet supplier to the UK. There will be some super new ranges from established upholstery favourites including Himolla, Bardi and Premier, as well as HTL and Primevera,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home. ‘In addition to AIS exclusive ranges from Parker Knoll, G Plan and Duresta

along with the Ducal and Stag brands, there will also be some excellent new product from Disselkamp, Venjakob, MWA and Nathan, to name but a few.’ The show gives AIS the opportunity to offer a choice of alternative fabrics, leathers and finishes on its exclusive furniture ranges. ‘Since joining AIS, one of the areas that has given me the greatest pleasure has been the success of developing exclusive ranges from established brands such as Parker Knoll and G Plan, giving
members not just bestselling product but, more importantly, enhanced margin opportunity,’ says Mallinson. The strategy has been repeated on cabinet furniture with ranges now being developed specifically under the Stag and Ducal brands that are exclusive to AIS members. ‘Brands are key to the marketing mix for today’s independent retailer as they add credibility to their offer and help drive footfall. ‘The other area that AIS has developed has been the creation of the five key
looks: Classic, Boutique, Scandi, Industrial and Country. Working closely with furniture suppliers to develop these looks, we have also sourced merchandise from key accessory and lighting suppliers, creating a comprehensive look that leverages members against their competition. ‘Anybody interested in joining AIS should take the opportunity to talk with one of the selectors or directors who will be in attendance at the show,’ he adds. Cranmore Park can be found just off the M42 within a few minutes of Birmingham International rail and air links and the NEC. The AIS members’ only show admittance is 18 and 19 January. The AIS Furniture Show is open on Sunday 20 January from 9am to 5pm and Monday 22 January from 8.30am to 5pm. Admission to the show is free but reserved for independent retailers only. Onsite parking, exhibition guides, lunch and refreshments are all also complementary to all independent buyers.

Bill Beaumont Textiles and Ragolle both have long histories as fabric producers of note and have extensive collections of upholstery and soft furnishing fabrics to show in March. Taking place on 4-5 March at Chelsea Football Club in Fulham, the London Fabric Show is now a firm favourite in the UK calendar for UK retailers and manufacturers. Organised and hosted by the BFM (British Furniture Manufacturers Association), the show features the cream of UK and European fabric producers
and suppliers with over 35 high-end and exclusive exhibitors. For the first time Bill Beaumont Textiles, a leading brand in the soft furnishings industry, supplying curtain fabrics, made to measure soft furnishings and wallcoverings, will exhibit at the show. Tracing its history back to the Lancashire fabric mills of the 19th century, the company is now run by former England rugby captain Bill Beaumont’s eldest son Daniel, who is the sixth generation of the family to do so. Ragolle is one of Belgium’s leading manufacturers of jacquard woven rugs
and upholstery fabrics. Based in WestVlaanderen for more than 50 years, it has been producing a wide variety of upholstery fabrics and cushion panel fabrics as well as being renowned for woven rugs and broadloom carpets. Now using a combination of computerised looms and traditional methods, its in-house creative department creates both modern and classic designs for its upholstery fabrics and rugs. Ten Belgian companies will exhibit at the London Fabric Show in 2019. Famed for their high quality textiles and ability to often offer bespoke designs, they include Annabel, Beaulieu, Greenstreet, Van Neder and Verstraete & Verbauwede. Their fabrics include jacquards, linens, velvets and chenilles in traditional and modern designs. Other returning European exhibitors include Inter Fabrics from Spain, Arruma Trapos from Portugal, Eurotex from Germany, Imatex Spa from Italy and, Boyteks, Turman and Yakar from Turkey. Collectively they will show a large selection of natural fibre and mixed texture fabrics in plains, stripes, florals and abstracts in soft and vibrant colours. Castelan entered into more partnerships in 2018 than in any year since 2011
Castelan enjoyed a positive 2018
‘As we enter another year, may we take the opportunity to thank our clients and their staff for their continued support in 2018 and wish everybody a healthy, happy and prosperous 2019,’ says Martin Napper, Castelan chief executive officer. ‘The past 12 months have seen significant pieces of legislation come into effect, with the Insurance Distribution Directive having the most obvious impact on the products and services
we provide. This was a significant change to the sales process and we have been delighted with the way it has been embraced by our clients and their staff, to the extent that it is now seen as something that enhances and enables the sale of protection plans instead of being a hindrance. ‘Castelan will continue to support our current and future clients in respect of the sales process to ensure that our The Insurance Distribution Directive has been embraced

ambitious expansion plans, positioning the Guardsman business to benefit from the significant investment that Amynta will be making in this market,’ says Stuart Hollander, The Amynta Group ceo. ‘The acquisition of Guardsman not only extends Amynta’s business into the furniture warranty sector but also creates our first entry into Europe. We are excited to be working with the Guardsman team in the UK to build on the tremendous success that is underway, and we see significant opportunity for us to invest and grow across the region. ‘The combined brand power of Amynta and Guardsman will give us
an edge in acquiring new business in the marketplace for warranties and associated services.’ ‘Through this new ownership we are thrilled to be able to accelerate our growth plans, unlock productivity through systems innovations, continue to deliver the best in class service, and support our retail partners in this challenging economic environment. Having the backing of The Amynta Group puts Guardsman in the strongest of positions to capitalise on opportunities and overcome all obstacles such as increased regulatory scrutiny and Brexit uncertainty,’ says Griffin. The company offers a variety of protection products across its brands
New products have driven growth Despite some challenging times during 2018, Staingard is celebrating another year of growth that came on the back of a sensational January Furniture Show. The introduction of new products and the show follow-up saw the expertise and passion that is in the Staingard DNA in great demand. ‘There is no doubt that the market for insured care plans and associated protection products has evolved enormously over the last 20 years: however it is our flexibility and innovation that has propelled us to the lead the way. Having the ability to change is one thing but having the desire and drive to do so is another,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. The company is constantly introducing new products and service developments. ‘The product range offered by Staingard is the most comprehensive on the market and the commitment and

flexibility that are an integral part of the company culture ensure that the time taken from idea to market is short. Staingard has the largest field sales team in its sector and this means that customer contact is never compromised. ‘We work very closely with all of our retail partners through the field sales team and are constantly working on ways to provide them with additional ways of increasing margins and improving customer service. Furniture is in our blood. We have the most experienced team in our sector, and that is reflected in the enduring partnerships we have forged since we started the business in 2006,’ says Aiston. This month will see Staingard grow its presence at the January Furniture Show significantly and it will showcase the launch of several products, including the strengthening of its premier position in
the mattress protection market with the addition of a new range from CleanRest. ‘Those involved in bedding will also be very interested in our protected beds and mattresses range, offering all the protection of Staingard, the hygiene benefits of Sanitised and FR’d to Crib5 applied to a luxury mattress ticking. ‘Leather care and repair products have been at the heart of Staingard’s Complete Protect and Care philosophy and the re-introduction the much loved Gliptone Leather Care products to the UK trade will be much welcomed. Staingard has invested heavily in the past year in the equipment and infrastructure to offer retailers and technicians the best support for their businesses including upgrading of the Scuffmaster and Flexicote brands to provide a superior leather colour-matching service.’ Email: sales@staingard.co.uk

OUTDOOR
Perfect for the pool
Forget the wind Poggesi’s latest umbrella is designed to be weather proof The basking summer may be a distant memory (it did happen) but as we’ve put the umbrella, chairs and table inside for the winter, wouldn’t it be nice if there was an option to leave the brolly out: especially if you have a very large garden (or estate). That the outdoor is an extension of the living space to enjoy any time of the year is the leitmotif that drives Poggesi into the creation of its umbrellas. Poggesi

aims to furnish and decorate gardens, terraces and commercial spaces with its umbrellas, combining aesthetics, functionality and technology. Magnum is its latest central pole parasol that multiplies the available space, reaching a maximum coverage area of 56sqm. Created to adapt to any architecture without affecting the surrounding environment, Magnum is equipped with a telescopic closing
system, which allows you to open and close the umbrella without removing the furniture. At least when it is there. Its fabric is suitable for both summer and winter and thanks to the reinforcement of the slats through specially designed profiles, Magnum is wind resistant up to 37mph. Above that, and you could always get the butler to hold it down. Visit: www.poggesi.it
