EDITOR’S COMMENT
Pricing rules matter Shoppers need confidence in what they are paying for, or everyone is in trouble Many large retailers’ sale or promotional offers are often taken with a pinch of salt by shoppers: Must end Tuesday (which Tuesday?); Save compared to after sales event (when does this end and what will the price be afterwards?), Free fitting or underlay (on which products?). This was meant to have been sorted in 2014 when Bensons for Beds, Carpetright, Dreams, Furniture Village, Harveys and ScS promised the then OFT to behave on pricing (DFS had been cleared in the investigation) and retailers were meant to take note. I cannot remember harsher words in terms of a prosecution brought by trading standards than those delivered by Sheriff Ian Wallace at Aberdeen Sheriff Court in March: ‘I do not view this as an oversight: it was a planned act by the company purposefully misleading its customers for financial gain.’ ScS had put prices up on three sofas at its Aberdeen branch three days before Black Friday 2017, but in-store POS claimed that all sofas had been reduced. Possibly seduced by the hype of Black Friday, many consumers would have eyed a bargain. But the city’s trading standards staff had been monitoring prices for months and knew the claimed reductions didn’t fit the rules. ‘Only through many months of labour-intensive monitoring of the prices of these product lines were we able to prove beyond doubt that the claimed reductions were spurious,’ said the department’s manager. Most local authorities wouldn’t have thought of sending staff in every day to take note of prices (and perhaps might not have at all had it not been an urban retail park), as they would justifiably say their resources would be better spent on things they legally have to do, such as social care, so who knows if other ‘offers’ have been going on elsewhere and by whom. ScS admitted having committed an offence (yes, it may have been a wrong one-off ) but surely it and other retailers have taken heed of the judgement, and things have changed? If not, more shoppers will simply go online.

Upholstery duo see mixed fortunes in recent orders Upholstery groups ScS and DFS have seen their orders head in differing directions in recent months: orders have picked up at ScS but slowed at DFS. ScS has seen like for like orders grow 2.9% in the 33 weeks to 16 March compared with an increase of 1.5% in the 26 weeks to 26 January, although it has warned that second half margins will slip. ‘The group continues to deliver profitable growth whilst increasing its resilience. The board is pleased with the group's year to date trading. Our focus on providing excellent choice, value and quality for our customers, coupled with our commitment to delivering against our strategic priorities, continues to prove successful,’ says David Knight, ScS ceo. ‘The retail market continues to suffer in the midst of the uncertain economic and political environment. We therefore expect the trading environment to continue to remain challenging in the short to medium term, although the board is confident that the group is well positioned to maximise opportunities as they arise.’ Sales rose 1.2% to £159.2m in the six month period. Pre-tax profits rose from £400,000 to £500,000. In-store furniture sales dropped by 0.2% to £129.8m, in-store flooring sales rose by 1.4% to £21.6m and online sales rose 30% to 7.8m. Average upholstery sales fell 4.2% to £1,543 as it focussed on the value end of the market and increased gross margin by 0.2% to 44.9%. Average flooring sales rose by 3.1% to £697. Knight said the increased cost of providing IFC would mean second half margins would fall back to those of the first half of 2018 (44.7%). ‘This is a key part of our offering, with approximately half of our customers taking up this option, and this will therefore have an impact on orders delivered and gross margins in the second half of the year. ‘As a result, the group expects that
4

DFS has seen lower orders since the turn of the year
margins in the second half of the year will be similar to those achieved in the first half of the prior year.’ DFS has warned that it has seen a drop in orders since the New Year as Brexit uncertainty deters shoppers. ‘Year on year order intake in the second half of the financial year to date has been lower than the first half. ‘Assuming no further weakening of this environment, our profit expectations for the financial year remain unchanged,’ said Tim Stacey, DFS ceo. In the 22 weeks to 30 December group sales rose by 29.1% to £422.4m, as the DFS, Sofology, Dwell and Sofa Workshop brands all saw growth. In the same period group pre-tax profits more than doubled to £14.1m. Like for like sales rose by 6.6% across the group and online sales rose by 22.6%. ‘We are pleased with the performance for the first five months of the financial year across the group, with all four of our brands achieving like-for-like
revenue growth. ‘The benefits of our investments in our online channels, delivery networks and the development of our brands help mitigate the impact of a market which we expect to remain particularly challenging in 2019 given the current political and economic uncertainty,’ Stacey said. ‘Gross profit margin for the group was diluted [from 59% to 58.7%] by the inclusion of five full months of Sofology trading compared to one month in the prior year, together with the growth in Sofa Workshop and Dwell. ‘However, we saw a steady gross margin in the DFS brand with the benefit of improved foreign exchange rates offset by product cost pressure, while group synergy benefits and average order value increases contributed to Sofology’s growing gross margin.’ Sofology saw like for like sales rise 14.2% while Dwell and Sofa Workshop saw a total sales rose of 24.3%.

Eve sees management clear-out after £20m loss Online mattress-in-a-box retailer Eve Sleep has seen a clearout of senior management after pre-tax losses increased to £20m and Dreams stopped selling the products. Abid Ismail, Eve chief financial officer and Felix Lobkowicz, Eve chief operating officer are to leave while Kuba Wieczorek, Eve chief brand officer is to become a part-time consultant. The company saw pre-tax losses increase by £1.3m to £20.3m in the year to 31 December 2018 while its cash fell from £26.9m to £6m. It has since raised £11.7m from shareholders alongside £900,000 worth of advertising from Channel4. Sales rose 25% to £34.8m, as it concentrated on selling to the UK, Republic of Ireland and France in July. Sales in those markets rose 35% to £29.4m. Repeat sales in those markets rose from 11% to 14% and returns fell from 10.5% to 9.3%. The company said it expected 2019’s sales to grow by 25% – with the UK and Republic of Ireland having much higher growth than France – but expected a substantial reduction on losses. It said Dreams wanted to renegotiate terms and it believed there were ‘other more profitable opportunities to be pursued instead. The impact of this step on 2019
performance is not expected to be material due to the low levels of revenue and profitability that were expected to be delivered from the arrangement.’ James Sturrock, Eve ceo said his strategy would cut losses. ‘We have made some good early progress with our rebuild strategy and have secured the funds to execute on it. As part of our pathway to profitability plan we have taken decisive action on our cost base, including a significant reduction in administrative expenses compared to 2018, along with a refocused and reduced marketing investment strategy removing inefficient activity. When combined with the expected benefits of our rebuild strategy, we anticipate a significant reduction in losses in 2019. ‘The opportunity to create a sleep wellness brand remains undiminished and I am confident that Eve's rebuild strategy, centred around a differentiated brand positioning, expanded product range and lower friction customer experience, combined with increasing brand awareness will win out over peers. ‘Our new approach focuses on sustainable growth and sets out a clear path to building a profitable business that delivers for shareholders.’

ScS fined for ‘misleading its customers for financial gain’ ScS has been fined £6,000 after admitting misleading customers over Black Friday deals, which a sheriff said was ‘a planned act by the company purposefully misleading its customers for financial gain’. Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard on 14 March that in-store POS claimed all sofas had been reduced for the Black Friday 2017 promotion at the chain’s Aberdeen store. However Aberdeen City Council Trading Standards Service had been monitoring prices for months as part of a nationwide investigation coordinated through the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland. It found that three sofas had been increased in price three days before Black Friday: a La-Z-Boy Marvin three-seater sofa by £800; a La-Z-Boy Tamla three-seater sofa by £270 and an Endurance Baxter two-seater recliner by £700. ‘I do not view this as an oversight: it was a planned act by the company purposefully misleading its customers for financial gain,’ Sheriff Ian Wallace said. The company admitted the charge under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 of engaging
in an unfair commercial practice, which was misleading to consumers and related to the display of misleading posters throughout the store. The company had sought to rely on voucher books offering £25 off a sofa to justify its claim. ‘I am very concerned that this retailer appeared to have been ignoring the law relating to unfair trading in this manner by engaging in misleading sale practices. Such practices are unfair, not only by misleading consumers but also by placing the many local and national retailers who trade fairly at an unfair disadvantage,’ said Graeme Paton, Aberdeen City Council Trading Standards Services manager. ‘Black Friday has become a very high-profile retail event in recent years, and consumers are entitled to rely on the fact that a claimed saving is a genuine saving. ‘Officers of our Trading Standards Service will continue to monitor sales promotions, both within the home furnishings sector and beyond, including future Black Friday promotions, and will take robust action where they are shown to be misleading, including the reporting of offenders to the procurator fiscal.’

However there was some evidence of a slight increase in average prices as unit sales dropped by 4%. Direct-to-consumer sales accounted for 11% of sales compared with 4% in 2015. Brexit uncertainty caused optimism among manufacturers to drop by 10%, but almost half of NBF members said raw material prices were dropping or stable in the final quarter of the year.

ONS follows shoppers and drops three-piece suites The Office for National Statistics has removed three-piece suites from its list of products used to measure inflation, replacing the item with sofas. In its annual update of the basket of goods and services used to measure inflation, ONS said the move better reflected shoppers’ buying patterns. ‘These are moving away from traditional three-piece suites to individual sofas and corner units.’ The furniture and household goods category, which includes flooring and housewares, makes up 5.2% of the overall basket of goods and services used to measure inflation.

The four rules What could possibly go wrong? If I tried to list all the different furniture and flooring products and the potential issues that could arise it would make a very thick book, but it’s possible to summarise every conceivable issue into just four categories. If I’m being pushed by a customer, contractor or supplier when I carry out an inspection, that’s what I’ll say: it could be one of four things… well, maybe five – because there might be nothing wrong at all. It does happen, but fortunately not very often. Usually the consumer has been told there isn’t a problem but won’t accept this from the supplier, so I’m asked to inspect in the hope that I’ll confirm this and give the customer reassurance. But this is a small
proportion of the claims I deal with. If there is something wrong, the first possibility is that it’s a fault with the product. Line faults on a carpet, a printing fault on laminate flooring or vinyl, short grain on a structural part of a chair or a finishing fault on a kitchen cabinet. These things (and more) do slip through the quality control net of even the best manufacturers. Fortunately most are dealt with quickly and effectively without the need for outside intervention. Just occasionally, however, the problem is not spotted by the installer or the customer at the time of delivery and that can lead to a dispute. The problem could be due to the way the product was assembled or installed. This is probably the biggest cause
of disagreement between a consumer and a supplier. Many installers are self-employed and paid by the consumer, even if the retailer introduces them to the consumer. When the installation is not done correctly the retailer wants to defend themselves and passes the blame to the installer. The installer has done the best job they know and so cannot accept they might be responsible for the problem. If the product needs replacing because of the installer’s work, this encourages the installer to dig a deeper trench as the cost of rectifying the issue could be much greater than the price paid for the work. Then again, the problem could be because the product was mis-sold. Some years ago a well-known retailer’s adverts featured happy families cuddling large dogs on their sofas, but the same retailer rejected many complaints due to ‘pet damage’. Three other cases from different retailers – one of which made it to BBC’s Watchdog – were the result of customers being told they were overweight. In each case the customer had bought the furniture in the shop and the salespeople had not considered whether the furniture they were selling was suitable. Finally, there are consumers who misuse or neglect what they buy. They assume a floor or suite can be cleaned in any way they like (or not at all), rather than considering the care instructions. Or that it’s fine for the bed to be used as a trampoline. The resulting problems are their responsibility. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com

PROTECTION
Stop the scratches
Stroolmount offers a variety of protection products
Stroolmount has been helping to protect flooring and furniture for more than a decade How do your protect your investment and prevent thousands of pounds in insurance claims when things go wrong? That’s the dilemma faced by retailers, manufacturers, architects, designers, hotel refurbishers, shopfitters and the hospitality trade. Stroolmount offers cost-effective solutions from as little as 1p. The family-run specialist company has been helping to protect flooring and furniture for more than a decade. ‘It makes sense to spend a few pence protecting flooring and furniture and creating genuine customer goodwill. We’ve saved companies thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims, not to mention hikes in their premiums for next time,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘To me it’s a no-brainer. Putting furniture on a floor without protection is like leaving out a lottery card: sooner

or later it’s going to get scratched.’ Stroolmount has an updated website reflecting its new Protect and Care product range, packaging and POS displays. ‘The heart symbolises our passionate commitment to providing superior products to keep flooring and furniture looking their best: our 5mm felt is thicker and has a stronger adhesive than most.’ Caring means going out of their way to solve customers’ problems. When people struggled to clean around heavyweight recliners, Stroolmount developed special Furni-Glide glides that easily slide recliners across carpet. When a hotel’s cleaners couldn’t move the heavy bedside cabinets, the hotel asked Stroolmount for help. ‘We developed height-adjustable glides allowing them to both move the furniture easily and protect the uneven floor,’ says Finch. Stroolmount’s specialist solutions help the trade as well as helping customers
when cleaning, decorating or rearranging rooms. Its self-adhesive felt cushions the impact between furniture and flooring to prevent scratching. Its Quickclick glides, Furni-Glides and Move It pads mean heavy furniture moves smoothly across hard floors and carpets without fibre friction or flawing the joints as they lurch to one side. PROTECTION Castelan has more than 2,000 Trustpilot reviews
Hat trick
Shoppers have praised the company’s repair technicians
Castelan has three key goals when dealing with consumers ‘It’s not always possible to keep all of the customers happy all of the time but with more than 2,000 reviews on the Trustpilot website we believe our rating of “Great” is justified,’ says Martin Napper, Castelan Group ceo. ‘Our mission statement is “to provide world class customer care and innovative tailored solutions in the product protection and insurance industry” and everything we do is focused on that goal. With this in mind, it is always pleasing to see comments from customers.’ ‘Very easy online claim. Fast decision and able to book appointment online. Friendly repair man turned up on time and did the repair quickly and to a high standard. Couldn’t ask for anything more,’ says S Nicholas. ‘The engineer was very helpful and dealt with the repair very efficiently. He kept me informed throughout the work as to the problem and what repair was needed. One hour time slot was great so I could plan the rest of my day. All round great service,’ says Mrs B of Manchester. Castelan strives to ensure that it is clear at the point of sale what the customer is buying, that it is as easy as possible for the customer to make a claim and that, when a visit is required, the attending technician delivers on the service expected. As the regulatory landscape moves towards focusing on the value insurance products offer the
24

customer, Napper believes these three key areas will become even more important, and the company is working with its clients to ensure all are jointly ready to meet those requirements. ‘In the future, the value offered by insurance products will become a matter of public knowledge as the regulators seek to ensure greater protection for the consumer, so it is ever more important to be working with a trusted partner in the product protection arena,’ he says. In support of its insured schemes, Castelan continues to offer its comprehensive range of care kits and
products for leather, fabric, dining furniture, beds and carpets. The quality and performance of these products is key to complementing and enhancing the sale of the insured protection plans and, once again, Castelan is trusted to source and supply these to leading names in the retail, fashion and automotive sectors. ‘We continue to be fully committed to delivering a range of products and plans to the furniture industry and beyond that mean we are the trusted partner of choice,’ adds Napper. PROTECTION Guardsman wants to enable its partners to concentrate on serving customers
Training investment Guardsman is taking the stress out of compliance
2018 was a challenging year for the insurance sector, with the long-awaited introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD). This new legislation adds even more complexity to an already heavily regulated industry – but furniture protection plan provider Guardsman has developed a raft of support to help retailers navigate their way through the sea of regulation when selling Guardsman plans. Guardsman has a well-established e-learning programme which retail partners’ sales staff are required to complete as part of the induction process. The programme has been developed in-house and is regularly updated to include new legislation – most recently around best practice in data handling and the introduction of Insurance Product Information Documents. ‘The e-learning software we use enables us to make quick updates and roll out those updates immediately. All retail sales staff are enrolled on our training programme with unique logins, and this allows us to monitor completion rates and be confident that our partners are selling compliantly. In addition, our team of account managers are always on hand to provide face-to-face training as soon as sales staff hit the shop floor,’ says Kate Way,
26
Interiors Monthly April 2019
Guardsman trade marketing executive. ‘The third element of support we offer is around online selling. Our marketing team can provide advice and support to retail partners by reviewing their websites and ensuring they are selling compliantly.’ Guardsman is also investing in a new internal learning and development programme for its own staff, called Guardsman Academy. ‘We want to invest in our people so that we can attract the very best talent. Part of this process is making sure all our staff are properly trained in areas such as customer
service, sales, compliance and data protection. Guardsman Academy allows us to formalise this training and demonstrate our adherence to the Continuing Professional Development requirements set out in the IDD,’ says Phil Griffin, Guardsman md. ‘Investing in training is a priority for us. It enables us to take the hassle and stress away from our partners, allowing them to concentrate on their customer service proposition and sales growth,’ adds David Evans, Guardsman sales director. PROTECTION Mattressgard has seen major growth
Protection plans remain at the core of the business
Speedy Quick product development is key for Staingard The market for insured care plans and the associated protection products has evolved enormously over the past 20 years. ‘It is Staingard’s flexibility and innovation that has propelled it to the lead the way. Having the ability to change is one thing, but having the desire and drive to do so is another,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. The company continues to innovate and is constantly introducing new products and service developments. ‘The product range offered by Staingard is the most comprehensive on the market and the commitment and flexibility that are an integral part of the company culture ensures that the time taken from idea to market is short,’ says Aiston. Staingard has the largest field sales team in its sector and this means that customer contact is never compromised. ‘We work very closely with all our retail partners through our field sales

team and are constantly working to provide them with additional ways of increasing margins and improving customer service. Furniture is in our blood. We have the most experienced team in our sector, and that is reflected in the enduring partnerships we have forged since we started the business in 2006’. Leather care and repair products have been at the heart of Staingard’s ‘Complete Protect and Care’ philosophy and the re-introduction of Gliptone Leather Care products has been welcomed by retailers. Staingard has invested heavily in the past year in the equipment and infrastructure to offer retailers and technicians the best support for their businesses including upgrading the
Scuffmaster and Flexicote brands to provide a superior leather colour-matching service. ‘The range of products marketed under the Mattressgard branding has seen major growth in the last year and proposed new products include enhanced cooling products and other bedding accessories, adding great value to an already superb commercial proposition. Mattressgard is now the clear market leader,’ says Aiston. ‘The range of Floorgard furniture and flooring protection products continues to gain traction in retail stores, with some big name retailers now offering these products and providing great service to their customers alongside increased transaction values and margins.’ Visit: www.staingard.co.uk

ROYAL WARRANTS
Mark of recognition Royal Warrants can be traced back to medieval times A Royal Warrant of Appointment is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the households of the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh or Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales. The Royal Warrant is the document that appoints the company in its trading capacity, and is granted to a named individual, known as the Grantee. The Royal Warrant gives the Grantee permission, and responsibility, for the display of the relevant Royal Arms in connection with the business.
Today there are about 800 Royal Warrant holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals. They are united by a commitment to the highest standards of service, quality and excellence. Companies can apply for a Royal Warrant after they have supplied the households of the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh or Prince of Wales with goods or services for at least five years out of seven (to include during the 12 months before applying). Royal Warrants are not granted for professional services – to bankers, brokers or agents, solicitors, employment agencies, training providers, veterinary services, government agencies for

example – or to newspapers, magazines, journals or periodicals. Royal Warrants are granted for up to five years and only to companies that provide goods or services to the royal household. The history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for royal favour was intense and the monarch had the pick of the country's best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the royal household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. In the 18th century, Royal tradesmen began displaying the Royal Arms on their premises and stationery. In 1990 the Royal Warrant Holders Association, which represents the warrant holders and polices how the Royal Arms are used, set up the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust to mark its 150th anniversary, and in 2017 the Prince of Wales became patron of QEST. QEST funds the education of talented craftspeople through traditional college courses, apprenticeships and one-on-one training with master artisans. Since it was founded in 1990, the Trust has awarded in excess of £4m to over 500 gifted individuals, of whom over 90% are still practising their craft professionally. Visit: www.royalwarrant.org

ROYAL WARRANTS
Hypnos is known for outstanding design
A special trust
Hypnos holds a Royal Warrant from the Queen
Hypnos has held a Royal Warrant for 90 years British bed manufacturer Hypnos has been crafting bespoke, made-to-measure mattresses and beds for the finest homes and hotels around the world for more than 100 years. The award-winning business has been the proud holder of a Royal Warrant since 1929 under the Keen family, who still run the business to this day. With the Royal Warrant firmly entrenched in the history and at the heart of the business, it’s no surprise the company regards it as a symbol of quality. ‘We’re incredibly proud of our Royal Warrant status. Having one is not just a mark of excellence and superior quality, it’s a way of life for us and something to be trusted. It’s for this reason retailers can feel confident that if they’re stocking a
product with a Royal Warrant in their store, they’re getting something that’s altogether special,’ says James Keen, Hypnos md. ‘In order to receive or hold on to this prestigious accolade, a company must demonstrate the outstanding quality of its products and commitment to sustainability but also have served the Queen for at least five out of seven years prior to application. ‘Hypnos is proud to be the only bed maker to actively supply all Royal residences including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and St James’ Palace. In addition Hypnos is also commissioned to re-upholster antique furniture for the Royal State Rooms from time to time, using respected and traditional

upholstery techniques to care for these timeless pieces.’ A Royal Warrant from the Queen provides the company with a symbol for exceptional quality and reinforces its reputation for the very best of British design. So whether Hypnos is making a bespoke bed for one of the palaces or giving the Royal household advice on the importance of sleep and its impact on health and wellbeing, it ensures the company is producing beds to the highest standards. This means retailers can be confident they’re providing their customers with a luxury, well-made bed that will stand the test of time. ‘Our skilled craftsmen use their experience and traditional, time-honoured skills passed down from generation to generation to create exceptional furniture. Every bed is created from natural and sustainable materials such as wool, which is ideal for regulating body temperature during sleep. We also use FSC or PEFC certified timbers been sourced from managed forests,’ says Keen. ‘Our wider sustainability and responsible approach is emphasised by becoming the first carbon neutral bed maker in the world and the only bed maker to hold this status for eight years, achieving FSC certified company status, passing the Sedex Ethical Trading Audit and creating a lean, green manufacturing culture. Furthermore, each bed is recyclable, meaning 100% landfill avoidance.’ Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

The Great Chair Company has expanded into upholstered bed frames
The Great Chair Company has expanded its offer into upholstered bed frames. ‘There is huge demand for a fast track, simple service supplier,’ says Mark Symes, The Great Chair Company commercial director. ‘Our business foundation is all about being in stock and delivery within 24-72 hours depending on where you are in the UK or Republic of Ireland, so to extend that simple offer to upholstered bed frames was a logical progression. ‘In just a few months we have grown our bed business from zero to more than 700 floor placements and that’s growing rapidly. The key is our ability to manufacture private label fabrics for the larger group customers and maintain an exclusive prestige collection for independent retailers. We are constantly told by our customers that the quality of our product, the outstanding price

compelling and a huge commercial win.’ Visit: www.thegreatchaircompany.com

SAFETY
Be prepared
PAS 7100 impacts on all non-food businesses
Last year the BEIS Office for Product Safety and Standards launched PAS 7100, covering consumer product safety-related recalls and other Tristine Hargreaves, National Bed Federation corrective actions. technical expert It is vital for anyone selling or making non-food products to the general public to know about: be you a retailer, e-tailer, manufacturer, distributor, importer or any combination of these, and you need to have a product safety plan in place. Companies are obliged, under the General Product Safety Regulations, to place only a safe product on the market. These regulations offer guidance and a framework on how to assess product safety and what you must consider when making your safety assessments. Failure to comply can lead to prosecution, imprisonment or both. Once an item has actually gone on sale, the regulations also require you to continue to monitor and measure the safety of the product, taking into account customer feedback: returns information, safety complaints and surveillance
testing, for example. But what happens when the feedback, monitoring and measuring shows there is a problem or potential problem? What do you do then? ‘Enter PAS 7100. The code of practice requires advance planning for corrective actions and gives guidance on how to prepare a product safety incident plan (PSIP) to deliver an effective recall or other corrective action in the event it is ever required,’ says Tristine Hargreaves, National Bed Federation technical expert. ‘In short, every business needs to be prepared for dealing with potential safety issues and how a retailer plans that may differ from how a manufacturer would handle it. What matters is that you are fully prepared and can demonstrate you would be able to do so. ‘Otherwise, when faced with a situation where a safety-related issue has arisen with a product already for sale on the market, it could be easy to panic and take the wrong course of action – or miss vital key actions that should be have been taken with immediate effect.’ A structured plan or procedure will set out responsibilities and actions, stating who should be doing what and within what timeframe. PAS 7100 delivers a framework on how
Safety must be monitored even after a product has gone on sale
to create a plan of action and what should be considered. It is essential that senior management within a business are committed to its development and operation, with regular reviews of both the plan and its effectiveness. ‘When developing the PSIP, input needs to be sought from several departments within a business. It is not simply a “QA” document. Several departments can have an influence on the overall safety of a product. There are several reasons why a product can become unsafe. It could simply be that a minor change, made with good intentions, has created a different problem or risk. So all departments need to be aware of how their actions could influence the outcome of the safety of the product,’ says Hargreaves. ‘It is also advisable to be prepared for the amount of work involved in handling an incident when it occurs, as there are many points to consider. These include conducting an investigation; potential quarantining of stock or recalling the product; tracing the product to the consumer; considering how to contact the consumer (do you need to place an advert in the press; do you need to notify trading standards?); managing customer expectations… the list goes on. ‘I would encourage businesses to seek assistance, where needed, to develop their PSIP. PAS 7100 also encourages businesses to consult their relevant market surveillance authority (through their trading standards primary authority where applicable) who also have a role in supporting business in the preparation of their PSIP.’ So where does product safety start and end? The honest answer – it doesn’t! It is an ongoing process of preparing to place only a safe product on the market, monitoring it while on sale, ensuring it continues to be safe, and having a PSIP in place to manage any safety issues that may occur. Geoff Bindley (right), SATRA furniture business manager with Johnny Worthington, SATRA senior team leader
SATRA is celebrating 21 years of furniture testing
SATRA celebrates its centenary this year after being founded to help the Northamptonshire footwear industry. It has since become a recognised and respected name for product research and testing in supply chains throughout the world. The organisation introduced furniture testing to its broad offering of technical services 21 years ago, since many of the test mechanisms developed for the footwear and chemical testing sectors during SATRA’s long history can, and have been, applied to furniture. ‘We are continuing to invest in growing the team as the furniture and floorcoverings department shows increased growth in testing work as well as flammability testing for both the domestic and contract markets,’ says Geoff Bindley, SATRA furniture business manager. ‘As well as meeting new and potential customers our focus in 2019 will be to

work with our current customers to introduce the SATRA Diamond Product Certification programme. It is designed to be a mark of quality for suppliers and manufacturers who want to show that their products and components exhibit superior quality and performance.’ SATRA gives a number of flammability and furniture safety seminars throughout the year, with the next scheduled for 30 May, 29 August and 14 November. These cover the requirements necessary for manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to comply with the current Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations and offer customers attending the chance to ask specific questions relating to their own products. The furniture safety seminar on 6 June includes information on the complex REACH legislation regarding restricted substances requirements. The flammability seminars are particularly beneficial for overseas companies bringing furniture items into the UK. SATRA has an extensive modern test facility at its headquarters in Kettering with a dedicated flammability laboratory for heat and flame testing including whole mattress testing. There is also a comprehensive chemical laboratory for restricted substances evaluation and laboratories to assess the damage caused by impact, heat and stains on
veneers, granite and glass. All laboratories are UKAS accredited to ISO 17025. The chemical laboratory at SATRA receives a wide range of requests and could, for example, include a requirement to test the paint used in nursery furniture to guarantee safe use for children, or to analyse a leather chair or sofa for the presence of chromium-6 (a bi-product of the tanning process that can cause skin irritations). SATRA experienced increased demand for chemical testing after the introduction of the REACH EU regulation in 2006. SATRA can also offer fabric and leather technical experts for the assessment of upholstery flexibility, resistance to abrasion and colourfast properties. ‘With SATRA’s great heritage and wealth of knowledge in testing and certification under one roof, we can help customers with a wide range of physical testing and produce test reports that are respected and recognised. This is very important because the modern consumer expects products to be fit for purpose. ‘This is a very exciting time in furniture and floorcoverings testing and certification at SATRA, as there is potential in the whole market. We have a very helpful and experienced team, and we look forward to many more years of success,’ he says. Visit: www.satra.com

This year’s show will be its most international ‘This year we have changed the calendar of the fair so that by opening from Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th April it will take up the baton from Salone del Mobile. I hope our idea of setting them close together will make it easier for our visitors by making these two important events available on one single trip.
‘Villa Erba will host 85 businesses this year, 33 of which are Italian and 52 from abroad. This is an undeniable indication of how highly esteemed Proposte is throughout the world,’ says Massimo Mosiello, Proposte director. ‘Proposte is a global preview of textile quality, and its search for excellence

MIFF celebrated its 25th edition
The Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) rounded off its 25th anniversary edition with positive feedback from exhibitors and buyers. The 8-11 March show spread over 100,000sqm at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre and Putra World Trade Centre and was particularly well received by buyers, thanks to the enticing variety of modern lifestyle designs showcased by 600 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions and the comfortable show experience. Exhibitors were satisfied by the diversity of attendance and high-quality buyers. Many reported strong visitor traffic and order writing. On the first two days alone, MIFF welcomed buyers from 120 countries with a significant number of first-time visitors. ‘We are very happy at the positive response, more so as 2019 is a very special year for MIFF. we received so many queries on the first day of trading this year,’ says Karen Goi, MIFF general manager. Among the highlights this year was the spotlight on Malaysia’s Furniture City of Muar and strong presence of young Malaysian designers bringing their products to the market to tap the growing population of millennial consumers. The show was packed with offerings from Malaysian companies and the increased international participation from China, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Turkey, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and, for the first time, suppliers from Portugal, Romania and Sri Lanka. Albert Hsueh, sales manager of longtime Malaysian exhibitor RTA said he saw more customers this year, especially from the US. ‘This year we are showcasing Malaysian-made mattresses for the first time and targeting US buyers. Due to the tax imposed on China-made mattresses, people in the US are looking for other options. It’s great that we are able to meet so many potential buyers at MIFF. We will definitely be back next year.’ American importer James Holt, who was at the show for the third year, noted the number of exhibitors had grown tremendously along with a wide range of products to choose from. ‘The designs stay fresh and up to date. So far, we have struck several deals, and we are looking forward to more. This is a great hub to buy products, especially for importers like us who want to purchase Chinese products.’ ‘The exhibition is excellent. Initially our main objective was to find partners in southeast Asia. But we were pleasantly

Winning return

London Fabric celebrated five years at Stamford Bridge London Fabric saw visitors praise the quality and comprehensive collections on show while exhibitors saw the cream of the UK’s fabric buyers. Featuring a rich array of fabric and fabric treatments, 38 high-end fabric producers and suppliers from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the UK introduced buyers to new designs in fabrics including velvets, jacquards and cottons.
New collections on show included new, inherently fire-resistant and wipecleanable fabrics from Aqua Clean. ‘This has been the best London Fabric we have ever exhibited at. We had only real, positive customers, and there was a steady flow of customers on both days which made the show extremely manageable for us and pleasurable for the visitors,’ says James Lowe, Aqua Clean sales manager.

Abraham Moon showed its new National Trust Collection inspired by properties in the care of the Trust, as well as additions to the Melton Wools range. ‘It would take two months of solid driving around to see all the companies that we can see here in two days. This show is a winner and we’ll definitely be back next year,’ said Julian Smith, Abraham Moon sales manager. Bill Beaumont Textiles had its show debut with a new collection of upholstery fabrics. Belgian exhibitors are a major draw at the show. Annabel, Beaulieu, Bru, Greenstreet and Van Neder were among the brands showing their latest plains and patterns. Ragolle Textiles showed for the first time and said it would return next year, praising the knowledgeable buyers and the relaxed atmosphere of the show. A new head office needed help to keep noise down Sea salt producer Zoutman has invested €2.5m in a new head office in Roeselare, Belgium after experiencing rapid growth in recent years. This modern and energy-efficient workplace, designed by Caanarchitects, is the home base for about 100 employees. ‘The number of employees within the group has grown by 60% over the past five years. We have welcomed not only many new production operatives but
also quite a few new office workers too,’ says Bert Lamote, Zoutman coo. ‘As a result of opening our new head office, which covers an area of 14,520sqft, we can double the number of office workers in the future.’ The company’s ambitions are reflected in the new building, which is a real eyecatcher on the Roeselare–Leie canal. ‘We deliberately opted for a modern and energy-efficient building with large

windows, which makes it a lovely place to work,’ says Jan Cerpentier, Zoutman chief technology officer. Architectural concrete for walls and ceiling, combined with a window glass outer shell and a rigid furniture interior is the perfect cocktail for an environment with very long reverberation times. The intelligibility in such an open office is normally very poor. In the concept phase Cerpentier was very concerned about the acoustical comfort for employees and visitors alike. He studied numerous products and solutions and together with the architects he chose to correct the reverberation in the office with made-to-measure products for walls and furniture by Print Acoustics. High cabinet doors with a regular grooved pattern, low cabinet doors with micro-perforations and desk elements with a fine groove pattern were used, along with Pianofurn acoustical furniture and wall cladding. ‘The ergonomics for our staff were given due consideration in all of our decisions. The acoustics and lighting are perfect,’ says Cerpentier. Print Acoustics, part of Triplaco, strives to develop and produce the most efficient, stable and decorative acousticabsorbing timber products, based on the Helmholtz principle, with the aim of reducing the reverberation inside a room caused by the human voice.
