EDITOR’S COMMENT
Shocking but not unexpected The results of the NBF’s first round of product testing has revealed worryingly high failure rates The findings from the National Bed Federation’s first round of product testing make shocking but not unexpected reading. That 11 of 49 products, a mix of mattresses, headboards, divan sets and upholstered bed frames clearly failed the flammability tests, with another five borderline, is nothing short of an outrage. Imagine if a major car manufacturer produced a car where a fifth of the output were a danger to their users: there would be screaming headlines and the manufacturer’s reputation would be in ruins. On a less dangerous note, 15 products had major problems over their descriptions, including models where the advertised memory foam was in fact polyester, spring count claims had been inflated and a used spring unit utilised. It has long been suspected that certain bed manufacturers were cutting corners on quality and materials, either deliberately or through what could only be breathtaking ignorance. The NBF is to be congratulated for shining a light into this murky part of the industry (products from both NBF members and non-members had issues). As Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director says: ‘All along, our Code of Practice has been about reassuring customers that what they are buying from NBF members is safe, clean and honest. People can’t look inside a mattress to see what’s there, or set light to it to see if it burns: they have to take on trust what they are told.’ In light of these results, bed retailers and manufacturers should be highlighting even more that their products are what shoppers would expect them to be: safe and as promised. The results were given to the relevant trading standards departments: the question is if those overstretched officials will take any action. In this issue you can discover the winner of this year’s Interiors Monthly Awards. Congratulations to all the winners. The winner of the hamper for voting was John Gibbs, Highdown Carpets & Interiors owner in West Sussex. Telford Show Interiors Monthly August 2019 Sealy Cover Edit.pdf

NEWS
DFS sees sales success across all brands DFS has seen an underlying 7% increase in sales in the past 12 months. The furniture retail chain says the increase allows for the purchase of Sofology and total sales were 14% higher in the year to 30 June. It says profits will be ‘slightly above’ £50m, compared with £38.3m in 2018 and in line with expectations. ‘We are particularly pleased that all group brands [DFS, Sofology, Dwell and Sofa Workshop] have recorded year-onyear like-for-like sales growth, albeit in part assisted by the weak comparator period in the prior year [28 July 2018]. ‘Cash generation has also been solid in the financial period, leading as expected to a lower average closing monthly net debt over the last six months. Reported net debt at the end of June 2019 will however be higher than the end of July 2018 given normal trading seasonality. ‘We are pleased with the progress being made with our strategic transformation. In particular our omni-channel initiatives are performing well with strong online growth of 17%. The Sofology brand has continued to perform very well, achieving strong like-for-like sales growth with profitability in line with our expectations and the brand is well positioned for the future,’ it said. ‘Despite a solid trading performance, we remain mindful of
the risk that the volatile political and economic backdrop may further impact on already low consumer confidence levels. Our progress in the near-term will inevitably be somewhat dependent on this backdrop. ‘In addition, as previously noted, the first half of our 2018/2019 financial year benefited from additional demand from purchases deferred from earlier periods. ‘Whilst weak trading environments make it harder to achieve significant levels of revenue growth, our omnichannel consumer offer, showroom sales densities, scale of operations and portfolio of wellrecognised brands provide some resilience. We also believe that we can continue to drive profit benefits and synergies from our previous capital investments and acquisitions. ‘We are executing our strategy of transforming our business to lead sofa retailing in the digital Sofology has seen sales rise age. We believe the market will return to historical long-term growth rates in due course and that as clear market leader we are well-positioned to benefit, delivering strong levels of cash generation and attractive shareholder returns in the long term.’ The group also announced that Mike Schmidt, interim cfo, has been given the job on a permanent basis.
Celebration fundraiser goes with a bang Nearly 200 people came out in support of the 25th anniversary edition of Big Shots, The Furniture Makers’ Company’s clay pigeon shoot, raising more than £34,000 for the charity. A bumper number of 44 teams competed in the

shooting contest, with companies from across the wider furnishing industry coming together in support of their industry charity. Once the final shots were fired, guests sat down to a enjoy a three-course meal with more money raised

through a raffle, auction and wine pull. The silver anniversary celebrations were complemented by an afterlunch talk from Victor Ubogu, former Bath and England rugby player, who delighted guests with tales from his
career before helping to present the prizes. The event finished with a bang as Daniel Spicer of Ideal Furniture made the winning bid to fire Holland and Holland’s antique cannon, to bring the special day to a fitting close.

Testing reveals extent of bed safety The National Bed Federation’s first round of random product testing has shown the divergence between products from Federation members and non-members, but not all members’ products were problem-free. Some 49 products were purchased: 24 from NBF members and 25 from non-members. They were a mixture of mattresses, headboards, divan sets and upholstered bed frames. Each product was subject to relevant flammability tests, then cut open and its specifications checked against marketing claims. On flammability, 19 NBF member products and 14 nonmember products passed with no issues. Five NBF products were classed as borderline, with fail tests on mattresses not able to be repeated, while those on headboards had used compliant production materials along with test histories and evidence of purchasing the correct materials from suppliers. All 11 failures from non-members were clear-cut, with issues such as match test failure on nonsleeping surface, fillings that failed the relevant tests and a contract mattress failing crib 5 testing. On trade descriptions, major issues were identified on 11 non-members’ products and four members’ products. These ranged from overstating spring counts, claiming the presence of fillings materials that were not present at all and, in one case, evidence of a used spring unit where none was identified in labelling or marketing materials. In
This mattress failed the crib 5 test
several cases, there were multiple failings on flammability and trade descriptions. Where issues were identified with members’ products, further investigations and site visits pointed to the reasons being mistakes rather than deliberate, according the NBF. Further checks and purchases will be made to ensure they are resolved. In some cases, the issues identified were due to incorrect product details being advertised by the retailer rather than the manufacturer. ‘These significant flammability failures do raise concerns about the safety of those products on the market and we have of course reported these and all our findings to trading standards,’ says Tristine Hargreaves, NBF technical manager. All results were also shared with the companies involved, in some cases via the retailer or online platform from which products were purchased. ‘All along, our Code of Practice has been about reassuring customers that what they are buying from NBF members is safe, clean and honest. People can’t look inside a mattress to see what’s there, or set light to it to see if it burns: they have to take on trust what they are told. The Due Diligence programme is a further check to try to ensure compliance beyond audit day is being met,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. A further 50 products will be purchased for testing during the coming year.
Dunelm at 40: customer appeal remains strong Dunelm has seen like-for-like in-store sales leap in the past quarter, along with strong online sales. The chain saw like-for-like store sales rise by 12.1% in the quarter to 29 June to £205.5m. Online sales rose 37% to £39m. This produced an overall like-for-like increase of 15.4%. New stores generated £19.6m, with overall sales 11.6% higher at £264.1m. Like-for-like store sales rose by 7.7%. ‘In the year that Dunelm turned 40, we are delighted that both new and existing

customers continue to respond positively to our evolving offer. The strong growth in the final quarter, and the year as a whole, demonstrates that in a rapidly changing marketplace, the broad appeal of Dunelm's purpose “to help everyone create a home they love” is resonating well,’ says Nick Wilkinson, Dunelm ceo. ‘In the short term, we remain cautious about the uncertain political climate and the impact it may have on consumer spending, but we expect to make further progress in the year ahead.’

Richard Renouf
A lesson not learned Using the correct materials is vital It was a very impressive table and, as it dominated the room, I had to walk round it to get to the worktop I had been invited to look at. I realised the table was the same finish as the worktop and had stylish, but off-the-shelf, worktop legs. ‘Did you make this to match the kitchen?’ I said to the joiner. He grinned. ‘Yes, I specialise in doing things like this.’ The table had a laminate surface and was so big the joiner must have purchased a matching sheet of laminate and a roll of edging. Even the butt joint of the ends of the edging had been neatly done. The worktop had been done the same way, it seemed. The joiner had ordered an extra-deep worktop blank and had machined off the front rolltop edge so he could apply edging and create a square edge to match the table. Now the worktop was swelling in front of the sink and this, maintained the joiner, was because the worktop was faulty. ‘What adhesive did you use?’ I asked.
‘The one supplied by the retailer: a contact adhesive.’ It was another bite-my-lip time. How could a joiner with this level of skill believe contact adhesive would be adequate to bond laminate in a very wet part of a kitchen, as a substitute for a factory-fitted edging? I said nothing while I was on site, but wrote my report soon afterwards and waited for the call. It wasn’t the joiner who rang, it was the retailer. ‘We only sell one type of glue for that job and the joiner’s saying it’s our problem. What should we have given him?’ I made some suggestions, but they were met with resistance: it had never failed on a job before; the joiner was a good guy and shouldn’t be having to bear the cost of this; we specified the glue, so you have to say it’s the right stuff. The list was about to go on, but I interjected. I’d been asked to explain why the worktop had failed and I’d done this. Whether my opinion was welcomed didn’t change it, and here was a chance
for some learning, a chance to get better before another problem arose. And more importantly, a chance to redo the job correctly and delight the customer. But the blinkers were on. Retailers can’t stock everything. Matching beading for every colour of laminate flooring? Short pin, long pin, blind gripper? Every conceivable kind of lamp? The style of furniture the customer found in a magazine? There will always be something that beats us. When it does, we don’t do ourselves any favours by fudging. What seems sweet at the time can quickly turn sour and leave a bitter taste in the customer’s mouth. The shop and the joiner could both have avoided the customer’s disappointment, but both were keener to take the money than to think through what made the best commercial sense. Even when the mistake was pointed out. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

APARTMENT APPAREL ‘This collection is directly inspired by the Bauhaus movement, combining functional, space-saving designs with bold block hues. Characterised by geometric style, minimalist design and the simplicity of a royal blue, mustard and rust colour palette, the range is a contemporary take on the 1920s’ design movement. Highlights include the powder-coated Finley nesting tables (top right), ideal for compact living and injecting pops of colour into living spaces,’ says Emma Benjafield, Argos/Sainsbury’s head of buying – furniture. Spotlight: Pico ‘Offering smart storage solutions for small space living, the Pico double bed (above) is our most ingenious design yet. Multiple drawers and shelves are nestled within the base, while a hanging rail is embedded into the headboard providing clever concealed space that utilises the framework of the piece,’ says Stephen Clark, Argos/Sainsbury’s furniture designer.

RETAIL KANSO LIVING ‘Embodying simplicity and craftsmanship, Kanso Living looks to Japan for inspiration, channeling a clean and minimalist aesthetic across furniture and accessories. Characterised by a simple colour palette and bleached woods, the dual-purpose Clic Clac sofa bed (below) is a standout piece in the collection, with the option of an accompanying footstool, designed to double as a corner chaise. Sleek open shelving is pared-back and clean, enhanced by monochrome textiles and accessories,’ says Benjafield.
Spotlight: Lighting ‘Our Kanso Living lighting range faithfully showcases the simplicity of Japanese design. Angular powder-coated metal shades in charcoal contrast with bleached wood elements that inject a contemporary feel. Available as a pendant, table or floor lamp, the offering suits living, office and bedroom settings,’ says Tom Sullivan, Argos/Sainsbury’s lighting designer. Accessories: ‘Taking its name from the Japanese word for simplicity, Kanso Living embodies minimalism and craftsmanship in functional yet directional pieces for dining, living, bathroom and bedroom. Slate greys and deep blues, combined with natural bleached wood and concrete, contrast with the clean, pared-back aesthetic. Highlights from the range include powder-coated metal storage pieces and tactile cushions in painterly prints and abstract raised-weave designs. A simple dashed-line motif runs across tableware, complemented by ribbed glassware for cleanly designed everyday dining,’ says Olds.
HIGHLAND LODGE ‘Influenced by the rustic wilderness of the Scottish Highlands, the collection explores the natural landscape through classically designed furniture and handcrafted accessories. Muted shades of sage and grey feature across the upholstered living range, wooden dining set and complementing Bournemouth storage pieces (below right). Light oak finishes and tinted glass lighting bring a fresh update to this relaxed and comfortable style, whilst brushed cotton and burnished copper accessories are punctuated with bold pops of mulberry that add warmth and richness to this autumnal range,’ says Benjafield.

RETAIL DREAMSCAPE
APARTMENT
‘Modern and delicate, the grown-up daydreamy Dreamscape look uses lustrous finishes, ombre fades and soft, fluffy textures to create a pretty, eclectic space that tastefully combines mermaid, unicorn and celestial inspiration. Dream-like softfocus floral prints bring delicate colour to neutral backdrops, while rose gold accessories give a contemporary twist. Faux fur accessories and cosy, deep pile rugs combine perfectly with statement furniture and geometric influences, while metallic hints add an extra dimension.’.
‘Multi-functional, with a confident mix of vintage, salvage and industrial-inspired styles. Maps, typography, checks and woven textures create a paired-back, comfortable, yet elevated look for our Apartment story. A balance of simplicity and a keen eye on details means this trend lends itself well to smaller spaces, emphasising careful curation over clutter. Practical storage is key to maximising space.’

Platinum return
27 suppliers took part
ACG hosted its second supplier exhibition
ACG hosted its second exclusive Platinum supplier show at the Slate Conference Centre at the University of Warwick on 22 June. ‘The event showcased all ACG preferred suppliers during the day within a fabulous lakeside setting. The Platinum show is a very relaxing and uniquely intimate experience of combining business with pleasure for our members. On the day we attracted a record number of retailers who all visited the show to see 27 group suppliers which presented their new products, exclusive offers to members – including cut length and roll offers – marketing and display incentives and one-off deals, making the day a huge success,’ says Richard Moore, ACG executive director. ‘The show was then followed by the AGM to discuss the financial affairs of the group while encouraging members to have their say regarding the future direction of the group. This was then followed by the gala dinner, which was a tremendous success, with members enjoying themselves and dancing till the early hours of the morning. ‘Membership of ACG attracts many benefits for independent retailers
28
Interiors Monthly August 2019
including the experience of feeling less isolated and more informed about the market without losing their independence. If you focus on doing business with the main industry suppliers, then it will guarantee to more than pay the cost of membership whilst attracting a significant level of interest back into the business,’ he says. ‘The ACG deal means rebates are exclusively paid direct to the member, from the supplier and not from the
group. This illustrates the clear picture and peace of mind for the retailer in knowing how hard their subscription is working for them and what they get in return. This is also one of the main reasons why we are attracting so many new members. ‘Members get support from other members so they can learn about the good and bad parts of their business at their regional meetings. Members can pool ideas with other retailers from

friendly group get-togethers through social events, and regional meetings that are unique to ACG. ‘We are always looking for quality retailers to join and would encourage retailers to at least explore the opportunity in more detail. ‘One of our core values is in the availability of de-branded products, which has really helped in protecting margins from the increased threat of home and Internet sellers. ACG debrands more than 100 core selling ranges and makes available our own heavily subsidised class-leading POS. This allows us to offer significantly reduced costs for displays both from suppliers and our exclusive unitary. Own label communicates to the consumer that we enjoy competitive prices because we are a powerful buying group, and provides a strategic opportunity for members to confidently promote effectively through sale periods. This provides a strong group identity that can be used to help members with press advertising and attractive in-store POS.’ Members explained the benefits of ACG membership. ‘ACG is a must for any progressive retailer: with own label
ranges, the best cut-length prices and rebates in the industry that are hard to beat, first class marketing support and a low cost subscription that could put an extra 3%-4% on your bottom line. I am a founder member and have benefited for over 30 years and have profited throughout good years and recessions,’ says Peter Pithie, md of Coventry and Warwick retailer Godiva Carpets. ‘We have been group members for 22 years, it pays dividends to be a member and the group doesn’t interfere. We are fiercely independent but utilise the tools ACG provides: especially the rebranding of top products, protecting us from the curse of the Internet. Top suppliers, great products, enviable discounts and rebates are all on offer. It pays to be a member,’ says Ken Appleby, Floorings Frome director. ‘Being part of ACG has opened up many opportunities for our business. We really like the way we can cherry-pick from all the offers available. The rebate scheme has worked brilliantly for us, even from year one, and we easily recover our membership fees,’ says Andy Polhill, co-founder of St Ives, Cambridgeshire retailer Superior Finish.
‘As a strong independent retailer we are delighted with the benefits of being a member of ACG. The more business that I do with our key suppliers, the significantly greater profits that I generate. The extra rebates have made a real difference,’ says Ashley Horne, md of West Sussex retailer Wall Bros. Visit: www.acgcarpets.com

Whitemeadow Best UK Furniture Manufacturer

Interiors Monthly August 2019
Whitemeadow is the largest independently owned upholstery manufacturer in Britain, and supplies many of the UK’s blue-chip high street brands and premium independent furniture retailers. Situated in the heart of the upholstery centre of the country, Whitemeadow began life in 1994, handcrafting products in its Nottinghamshire factory. Fast forward to today and it is proud to maintain its commitment to craftmanship, now on a much larger scale. Expansion has allowed it to produce more but has never extinguished the commitment to keeping all of its products hand-crafted in its Nottinghamshire factories. Whitemeadow currently employs over 550 colleagues over six sites, all within a two-mile radius, totalling over 210,000sqft of manufacturing space. Having built a reputation based on excellence in manufacturing, Whitemeadow successfully operates in several product categories: including sofas, upholstered bed frames, sofa beds and accent pieces including chairs, footstools, chaises and ottomans. In terms of style, it is determined to push the boundaries. Rather than producing a singular structured house style, it offers designs appealing to a wide spectrum of customers, ranging from timeless classics through to the pure contemporary.
Building on this reputation, Whitemeadow also manufactures branded upholstery collections for leading interiors brands. It is the chosen manufacturer for the highly successful Content by Terence Conran and Orla Kiely upholstery ranges, with both brands choosing to open showrooms at the Whitemeadow head office. The contract furniture market is another area Whitemeadow is looking to develop further this year and it will be attending the Independent Hotel Show in October for the first time. Drawing on the enormous pool of talent and manufacturing capabilities already within the business, Whitemeadow has found that its diverse product range and skill set is perfectly suited to the contract market and now has an established contract division. ‘It is fantastic for Whitemeadow to again receive this award. It helps enormously to raise the profile of the business to our customers and the wider marketplace, and goes a long way in helping generate a real desire to buy our sofas, chairs and beds. ‘We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over the years and those who took the time to vote for us on this occasion,’ says Ian Oscroft, Whitemeadow md. Passion for the business and for its customers is evident in everyone who works for Furlong Flooring, throughout every department. ‘It is an amazing business and it’s a pleasure to go to work every day and see everyone striving for excellence. Being recognised as Best UK Flooring Manufacturer for the third year in a row is an amazing achievement and an award we are very proud to win,’ says Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring, md. 2019 has seen a number of developments, most notably a new logo and direction for the brand. ‘We have taken a great deal of time in the last 12 months to re-evaluate the business as part of our programme of continuous improvement. Looking at our branding and marketing was key to this. We invited a cross-section of our customers to participate in the review. Feedback was very positive and focused on our service elements, everything that is underpinned by Furlong Flooring. ‘The Regency Carpets and Naturals Solutions brands were less important than the actual product and product type. Our customers buy Elegance, Solitaire, Fairway, hardwood, carpet, LVT and vinyl from Furlong Flooring because they know it has a great price, great
quality and will be delivered when they need it. “First choice flooring for every room” encapsulates this in one sentence. We have flooring to suit all consumer preferences and we want our customers to sell those products as their first choice because of the lengths we have taken to support their businesses and their reputations.’ Products are a key part of the new direction. Carefree Twist has just launched and Furlong Flooring is confidently calling this a ‘game changer’ in its class. ‘The colourbank, appearance and performance are all class-leading but it is the Combi-bac backing that makes the difference: delamination and scuffed paintwork are a thing of the past. Carefree Twist is perfect for the consumer, retailer and fitter: install and move on. ‘In a challenging market, there has never been a better time to buy from family-owned UK businesses like Furlong Flooring. Our three distribution centres have a stock capacity of 500,000sqft, over 50 vehicles and a team of 200plus all focused on providing our customers with the best of everything and maintaining our winning record. Our thanks again to readers of Interiors Monthly.’ Visit: www.furlongflooring.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2019
German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann is celebrating double-digit year-on-year independent customer sales growth in the first half of 2019 despite tough trading conditions. Its ranges – especially award-winning Monaco and new addition Cambridge – have been proving successful for the manufacturer. ‘Monaco and Cambridge are two incredibly different ranges but their stylish and functional designs, colourway choices and practical storage options provide a total bedroom solution for many consumers,’ says Simon Hewitt, md of Wiemann’s UK agent Litmus Furniture. ‘The right accessories and features also lift a display and product to a different level in consumers’ eyes. Over the years, Wiemann has developed an excellent reputation for its smart, innovative features. All furniture is made to order so people can fully customise their choices.’ Monaco, launched at this year’s January Furniture Show, features an innovative 90-degree corner unit with panoramic bi-fold opening doors to offer easy access to the full space behind. It combines stylish design with practicality to provide a total storage-maximising and space-saving package. It is available in a number of compilations from a 50cm wide single door unit to a full 3m run with up to eight bi-fold doors. Doors are available full length or combined with integrated drawers for extra storage options.
Matching beds, bedsides and additional storage chests are also on offer. ‘Monaco is now on display in a number of our retailers and is proving a real hit. We’re getting great feedback from a huge amount of stores on the range’s stunning design and smart features,’ says Hewitt. The contemporary range comes in a choice of three carcase and door finishes: Champagne, Pebble Grey and White. Mirrored doors are also available. Cambridge breaks the traditional German norm. The hinged robe features a classic Shaker-style design while combining practicality and flexibility. ‘Cambridge is rapidly becoming one of our star ranges. It’s something quite different for Wiemann, just for the UK market – and quite the surprise. We’re looking forward to it being around for a long time. The flexible collection is available in widths from 1m to 3m and two to six-door compilations – along with the option of matching bedside and storage chests.” Cambridge comes in a choice of three finishes: Havana, Champagne and White. Mirrored doors are available. ‘See Monaco and Cambridge plus our latest portfolio additions and best-sellers at the Irish Furniture Homewares Show, Long Point and Autumn Furniture Show. We’d love to welcome you to the stand and show you what we’ve been working hard on for the past six months.’ Visit: www.wiemannuk.co.uk

Hypnos Best Bed Manufacturer (Upmarket)

52
Interiors Monthly August 2019
After a busy and exciting 12 months for the company, Hypnos is proud to be named by Interiors Monthly readers as best bedmaker in the upmarket category. This award recognises Hypnos’ commitment to luxury, quality craftsmanship as well as an approach that puts sustainability at the heart of the business. As Royal Warrant holder since 1929, Hypnos’ dedication to luxurious beds that provide the perfect night’s sleep is evidenced by it being the number one brand in hospitality, and partnering with key hotel brands such as the prestigious Soho House. Its ability to innovate and create high-specification sleep solutions makes its products perfectly suited to both serviced apartments and the wider luxury hospitality sector. A wide range of green initiatives have propelled the business to become a pioneer in the industry. For example, the company only uses natural and sustainable materials and has not used chemical-based off-gassing foams for a decade. It also remains committed to sourcing the very best materials from around the world, including wool, horse hair, cotton and latex in its handcrafted beds. All these natural fibres are 100% biodegradable and recyclable at the end of their life: like every Hypnos product. An evolution of this policy resulted in a new partnership for its Natural and Regency mattress collections with Wools of New Zealand. This has enabled a relationship directly with a farm and
with one farming family to ensure complete traceability of the wool. It also allowed Hypnos to reduce its impact on the environment through better fleece yields, efficient farming practices and lower carbon footprints. One excellent example of Hypnos’ positive impact on the environment is that in the last 10 years, through using sustainable fibre alone, Hypnos has re-used the equivalent of 165 million plastic bottles that otherwise would have gone to landfill or the world’s oceans. This year, Hypnos achieved compliance with ISO 14001, the standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system. This internationally recognised certification underpins the company’s leadership in sustainability across the bed manufacturing industry and is testament to this long-running commitment from across the business. Looking to the future, Hypnos has appointed a sustainable development director to oversee its wide-ranging ethical business practices in coming years. As well as focusing on sustainability, the last 12 months have seen Hypnos continue to develop its market-leading product offering. For example, its popular Pillow Top collection now features patented 37.5 Technology, made with volcanic minerals, which helps keep body temperature in the perfect comfort zone, giving ultimate rest and relaxation. Interiors Monthly August 2019
Living a healthy lifestyle is no longer just about diet and exercise. A new breed of consumer is increasingly making the link between getting good quality sleep and living a healthy lifestyle, and Sealy’s Activsleep range is perfectly placed to offer the solution. Launched last year, the Activsleep range has been Sealy’s most successful product launch in over a decade. The launch of the range has helped Sealy reach a younger customer base which, in line with an increased awareness of the benefits of looking after body and mind, is starting to take the idea of good quality sleep more seriously. The range has seen Sealy building upon its key philosophy: that the quality of your sleep is just as important as the quantity, appealing to a younger audience who are increasingly putting health and wellbeing at the heart of their purchase choices. Recent data suggests that nearly a quarter of people are now monitoring their sleep patterns as part of their health and fitness goals. Sealy has addressed this desire for high-tech with a range that includes the latest innovations in sleep technology to help users get the best night’s sleep possible. The entire collection includes Sealy
Smart Fibres – a package of unique and innovative fibres that holds the Allergy UK seal of approval and is exclusive to Sealy. It includes Purotex, which releases friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress to clean up allergens and reduce humidity, and Tencel, which prevents overheating, helping to create a cool and clean sleeping environment. With nine models in the range, the Activsleep collection offers a variety of spring systems and comfort ratings to ensure users get the correct support. From Geltex models which offer the triple benefits of pressure relief, body support and breathability to extra-firm mattresses which use a PostureTech Zero Deflection system to minimise motion disruption and partner disturbance, the range offers diverse models which make achieving a healthy night’s sleep easier than ever. The Activsleep range benefits from Sealy’s commitment to quality. Handmade in its factory in Cumbria, the range uses innovative sleep technology and the latest fillings to offer best in class support and comfort to customers, helping them to achieve their best sleep yet. Karndean Designflooring Best LVT Manufacturer

66
Interiors Monthly August 2019
The UK’s market leader in LVT flooring Karndean Designflooring has been named Best LVT Manufacturer for the second consecutive year. As well as the launch of its Karndean Inspire Studios, the company has seen success with the recent update to its premium Art Select range, the launch of its new Heritage collection and the addition of two geometric Kaleidoscope designs. The award is testament to its strong partnership with retailers throughout the UK, continued innovation in bringing the most authentic designs to market and supporting retailers to provide a unique customer experience. ‘We’re thrilled to receive this recognition for our wood, stone and abstract flooring designs and would like to thank our UK-wide network of retail partners and the interiors industry for their continuing support,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring retail sales director. ‘Our designers travel the continents to find inspiration for our authentic designs. From England’s working quarries to the ancient forests of Europe, the remote Australian outback and beyond, we take pride in sourcing original products that we can use to create stunning interiors. Incorporating the natural features and intriguing forms of each material into flooring designs, we are able to replicate the natural variation of materials without the practical limitations of real stone or wood.’ Launching its first Karndean Inspire Studio earlier this year, it has continued to grow the concept in retail showrooms with eight locations to date. ‘This has seen selected Karndean retailers offer the new style studios, which have been designed to offer a home-from-home feel, with inspirational mood boards and source materials to help customers imagine how their favourite flooring might look in their home,’ says Cochrane. Always innovating and updating its product portfolio, Karndean Designflooring has added a wide range of designs to
its collections this year, with more to come. The Art Select collection has been extended with 14 new designs, including French oak, hickory and American chestnut. Ideal for home designers looking to add visual interest in openplan spaces or to match flooring room to room, the new oak designs are available in a choice of extra-large plank (56in x 9in) and parquet (18in x 3in) formats which can be used in different laying patterns, such as herringbone or at 45deg, to define separate living areas and create an effortless sense of flow. Kaleidoscope, inspired by Moroccan and medieval Spanish architecture, introduced two new geometric designs: Casablanca and Marrakesh. Adding to its abstract designs, Karndean Designflooring released its creative Heritage collection, featuring a range of exquisite colourways inspired by the architectural tiled floors of grand Victorian and Regency villas and townhouses. From striking monochrome designs to beautifully blended traditional patterns, the collection reflects both the classic elegance of historic homes and the boldness of contemporary trends. ‘Our collections are designed to be extremely versatile, enabling decorators to take on the latest trends including Victorian, pattern and modern oaks. With more product launches to come this year, we will be introducing new light and clean oak colourways,’ says Cochrane. Karndean Designflooring offers more than 250 designs, including gluedown, loose lay and rigid core ranges, all of which are inspired by nature and designed to last a lifetime. Visit: www.karndean.com

As a result it has launched two home office desks and a bedside/lamp table featuring white glass that discreetly hides the wireless charger, and Jual’s signature curved design gives that unique appearance. ‘All Smart products are all available on our super-fast, next working day delivery. All orders received by 3pm will be delivered to store or the customer’s home the next working day. ‘We are excited to see where we head in the next year as we continue to develop more products to fit with today’s lifestyles, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers old and new for their continued support.’ Visit: www.jualfurnishings.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2019
Interfloor has been advocating the use of underlay with new floorcoverings since the 1940s, pioneering its ‘British method’ worldwide and developing its market-leading brands Duralay and Tredaire to supply hundreds of customers in more than 70 countries. It manufactures a diverse range of products including the three most popular forms of underlay: polyurethane foam, sponge rubber and crumb rubber. ‘Our goal is to be the supplier of choice to our customers and so we’re absolutely delighted that Interiors Monthly readers hold us in such high regard when it comes to providing them with underlay for a wide range of installations,’ says John Cooper, Interfloor ceo. ‘This is a fantastic endorsement for our team by the people who matter most to us: the retailers, distributors and flooring contractors who trust our products to give their customers the best underfoot experience. ‘We’re proud of our history and heritage but also of the more recent innovations added to our comprehensive underlay portfolio. We have options for every retailer, supporting their commitment to help their customers’
money go further when they invest in new flooring.’ Interfloor’s Tredaire is synonymous with luxurious underfoot comfort. A recent addition which has proved popular is the Premium High Density PU underlays range, including the award-winning Tredaire Palladium, which was developed in response to demand for firmer and more luxurious products suitable for use in domestic and contract installations. ‘Consumers love the high performance features of our PHD underlays, and fitters have been impressed with how easy they are to install. The range has quickly become a top choice for professional installations in all areas of the home,’ says Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. The Duralay brand provides hardwearing underlays, ideal for the contract market, and a range of specialist underlays for the underfloor heating, double stick and hard flooring segments. The latest addition is a specialist collection of LVT underlays that are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the risk of damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. Premier Housewares Best Accessory Supplier

Interiors Monthly August 2019
When it comes to creating the perfect interior setting, the importance of accessories should never be underestimated. Detail is everything: especially when it comes to staying current and on-trend. A thoughtful approach on using accessories can make the difference between a setting that feels dull and disjointed, and one that is cohesive and engaging. ‘I am delighted to have won this award, especially considering our home accessories department only launched three years ago,’ says Claire Cassidy, Premier Housewares home decor product development manager. ‘There is a challenge of meeting the demands of our diverse customer base but I’ve embraced the ambition of providing something for everyone. Our buying teams take great care when it comes to sourcing and ranging products that will work within specific looks or trends. I apply a design-led approach, working closely with suppliers to share my vision and develop ranges that are
unique to our brand and set us apart from our competition. ‘Used well, accessories allow people to express their personality and even reflect their life experiences. Whether it’s a serenity-creating sculpture from our diverse Complements range, or a heritage-inspired chess set from our Churchill collection, thoughtfully selected pieces give consumers the freedom to articulate themselves. We work hard to produce ranges that are both distinctive in character and completely harmonious. ‘Given the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the home interiors industry it is important not to rest on our laurels but constantly research and develop to keep things fresh. Our ranges are continuously evolving, seeking newness, in order to stay ahead of the competition. ‘Consumers are always exploring new ways to accessorise their home, which makes an agile and creative approach to product development essential to continued success.’ Visit: www.premierhousewares.com

‘We’re delighted to once again be awarded Best Vinyl Manufacturer by the readers of Interiors Monthly. In what is a highly competitive market, we’re focused on innovation that provides our customers with the best in style, quality and value,’ says Ingrid Derveaux, Leoline product manager. The company says heavy investment in the continual development of new decors is the driver to its success, and its product teams are constantly working to develop new looks and technologies that improve the style, quality and everyday performance of its cushion vinyl floors. IVC is also the first to market with many designs, keeping it solidly on the trend curve and making its collections appealing to style-savvy shoppers as well as a more traditional consumer. ‘Nowhere is our commitment to sustained product development more apparent than with the launch of two brand-new collections for this year from Leoline. With Timberline and Ceramica, we’ve pushed forward with the latest ceramic, architectural and wood looks for the home, welcoming reclaimed, patchwork-like herringbone woods through to super-cool terrazzo and highluxe marble. Featuring timeless looks of stone and wide-oak planks for a balanced and thoughtful collection, they are ready to take the market by storm,’ she says. For homeowners, vinyl flooring has many advantages, including easy
fitting and easy maintenance, and IVC is continually looking for ways to improve on this. With backings that add sound absorption or thermal insulation and the Superguard wear-layer reinforcement that stops scuffs and stains while making floors easy to clean, both Avenue and Leoline are ready to bring their performance not just to bathrooms but to kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, hallways and conservatories too. In fact, anywhere there is a need for a floor that’s going to stand up to family life, vinyl flooring has the answer. ‘We’ve also taken big strides in improving the aesthetics of modern cushion vinyl. Natural Look & Feel has long been cherished for its impressive authenticity, but the recent introduction of V-groove technology has raised the benchmark once more. Featuring on designs in both Leoline and Avenue, it gives a deep embossed groove on the edges of the plank to give the design an even more original appearance. ‘As we continue to innovate and be the first to market with designs inspired by the latest home trends, you can rely on us to provide high quality products that bring homeowners the very best floors in the category. ‘We would like to thank all readers of Interiors Monthly for recognising our efforts and voting us Best Vinyl Manufacturer once again,’ says Derveaux. ‘As custodians of William Morris’s original company, at Morris & Co today we take this legacy of design and making very seriously. It is our purpose that these designs live on in people’s homes through beautifully crafted fabrics wallpapers and accessories. It therefore makes us very happy to be recognised in this way by our wonderful customers,’ says Claire Vallis, creative director at Morris & Co parent company Style Library. ‘We are privileged to own within our incredible archive the original hand blocks and match pieces, original wallpaper logs and a treasury of handprinted wallpaper and fabric samples from the George Street showroom.’ For today’s collections the company takes inspiration from the archive and also from all aspects of Morris’s life, work and influences, to create new designs that sit alongside the classics, making them relevant for today while maintaining all the artistry and charm of the originals. ‘All collections are created with great care and consideration in the dedicated design studio, ensuring craftsmanship is maintained throughout the process from authentic re-editions of iconic patterns to hand-painted new interpretations. This care and attention is carried
through to its licensing programme, where only the best quality products and partners are selected to bear the mark of the original Morris & Co. These iconic designs can now be found on home accessories, gifting, beauty and fashion. Morris & Co. is also proud to wave the Made in Britain flag, with all of its print and wallpapers being manufactured in sister factories in the UK. For AW19 it has launched the Melsetter collection: an homage to William Morris’s younger daughter May (1862-1938). ‘May is one of English embroidery’s most influential and pioneering figures. Her extraordinary upbringing placed her at the physical and ideological heart of the English Arts and Crafts movement. As an embroiderer, designer, teacher and campaigner her career spanned more than 50 years. ‘Like her father, May was a dedicated scholar to her artform and her study of historic needlework shaped the stitches, colours and designs created at Morris & Co. The Melsetter collection (named after Melsetter House in Orkney, once home to a significant May Morris embroidery) is inspired by May’s work and by the needlewomen influenced by her craftsmanship and teaching.’ Visit: www.stylelibrary.com/morris&co

Mattressgard Best Mattress Protection Provider
Right: Mattressgard offers a wide selection of mattress protector products to improve mattress health
84
Interiors Monthly August 2019
‘“It’s just a mattress protector,” was a statement once commonly banded about, but I’m pleased to say it is heard less now,’ says Paul Aiston, Mattressgard md. ‘So what did that mean? Well, it represented the general apathy to mattress health and care. While care plans to prevent staining or damage to your sofa were in full swing, no one was really considering the benefits of using a high quality, performance mattress protector to protect their mattress. ‘“It’s covered, you can’t see the stains”; “Dust mites and bedbugs aren’t a problem, they don’t affect me”; “Bacteria and the odours they produce are too embarrassing to discuss” were common excuses. Mattress protectors were in the main either noisy, waterproof, almost medical-type affairs or a layer of quilting which to be truthful, doesn’t really protect the mattress and positively encourages the colonisation of undesirable small organisms.’ But mattress protectors today have evolved into a wonderous array of materials, designs and functions, and mattress health is becoming a real point to consider when buying a new bed. Staingard has supplied a range of products for more than 10 years, but at the January Furniture Show 2016, it added a new brand: Mattressgard.
Initially with a selection of 12 products, JFS 2016 proved outstanding for the brand, with multiple stands of full stock being ordered. Every product in its range was, and continues to be, guaranteed for 10 years, is anti dust mite for a healthier lifestyle, has an absorbent surface to wick away moisture yet stays 100% impermeable to spillages. Each product can be sold as a standalone, value added sale or offered to add tangibility to a Staingard Mattress Care Plan. ‘The range consists of high quality, but value for money polyester through cotton, bamboo and Tencel, any of which can be personalised at no extra cost. Despite continued growth of our existing products, we were determined not to sit still, we listened to feedback and added where needed, over the years incorporating CleanRest, our technologically advanced products with MicroOne technology and anti bed bug enclosures, and more recently B-Sensible, an outstanding range of protector sheets in variety of colours with outstanding in-store display options. ‘Mattressgard is delighted to have been awarded the Interiors Monthly Best Mattress Protection Product, voted for by you, our retail partners, so a massive thank you,’ says Aiston. Castelan Group Best Warranty Provider

Interiors Monthly August 2019
‘To win the award for Best Warranty Provider on one occasion was a great achievement, but to have won it now for a third consecutive year shows that Castelan is committed to delivering schemes and services that are consistently respected and trusted throughout the furniture industry: and beyond. Thank you to all who took the time to vote: we appreciate it and are delighted to have won,’ says Martin Napper, Castelan Group ceo. The changing landscape of regulation around add-on products such as furniture warranties, makes it ever more important to choose a provider which understands the requirements and works with clients to ensure compliant sales of products that add value to the end-user. ‘Our products and services are built around the customer being able to protect their investment in new furniture. Furniture is not a small investment and life can be unpredictable: accidents happen. So selling protection plans that cover things like accidental staining and accidental damage is a valuable addition to the retail offering. The next few months will see increasing visibility of that offer
and Castelan stands ready to support its clients through this time,’ says Napper. Castelan continues to provide and develop products and services to support the sale of furniture and provide protection for the customer. Its fully insured schemes offer cover for staining and accidental damage as well as the options of extending the manufacturer’s guarantee period. A comprehensive range of care kits for leather, fabric, dinning furniture, beds and carpets complement these schemes and combine for a really valuable offering. In addition, Castelan provides key services to clients in the post-sale in-guarantee period, demonstrating that it has a fully integrated solution to support the sale of furniture and the delivery of value-added products. ‘The breadth and depth of our knowledge and experience as a team enable us to deliver products and services that are valuable to our clients and their customers alike. This has been recognised for a third time and is why we are the trusted partner of choice,’ adds Napper. Visit: www.castelangroup.com

Staingard Best Product Protection Provider (Furniture)
‘When Staingard was launched in 2006 it was a new venture into an extremely established market, and we knew that we could not afford to be just another warranty provider. The FCA hadn’t long been involved with furniture warranties at that stage, and it’s fair to say the reputation of the industry could have been better. So with Staingard we aimed for a policy without ambiguity, with exceptional service and supported by outstanding care products. If we introduced clarity for both customer and salesperson, we would have a product that delivers the very best service,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. ‘Over the last 13 years, Staingard has retained those values, precipitating growth in all areas and allowing us to diversify with so many different care products. For a furniture retailer, Staingard is now the place to go for all value added products, adding value to their customers’ purchases and supporting their margin. Whether they need insured care plans, Mattressgard mattress protectors, Floorgard floor protectors and glides, anti-slip rug underlay, furniture repair products or leather care kits from the most extensive range, we can provide the solution. ‘The addition of Gliptone, the industry
88
Interiors Monthly August 2019
leader in leather care products, and particularly its dyes and pigments, moved Staingard up a gear in care product provision,’ says Aiston. All care kits are manufactured at the company’s production facility in Chester, so within 24 hours from receiving an order it can fill, label, assemble, pack and dispatch products, personalised to a retailer’s brand if required. ‘After years of development, our brand is strong. The Staingard name inspires confidence, but so too does your brand. That’s why we championed personalisation for short-run orders, be it care kits or mattress protectors, to enable you to have the benefits of one of our great products but carrying your company name. ‘It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but we’ve made some great friendships with great people along the way. These awards were voted for by you, our retail partners, and I can’t thank you all enough for showing the appreciation and recognition for our products and our service. Furthermore I would like to thank my family who all work in the business for their unstinting support and my fantastic team of employees for their hard work and dedication.’ Visit: www.staingard.co.uk

Darwyn Ker, Woodpecker md is honoured to earn this industry award once again. ‘I’m thrilled by the invaluable support of Woodpecker customers and receive the award very gratefully. We are dedicated to providing excellent service and expertise in every area of wood flooring, and passionate about growing Woodpecker, with and for our retail partners.’ Woodpecker is a family company with a heritage in the timber industry that dates back three generations. Using centuries-old techniques combined with advanced manufacturing to expertly finish every floor, Woodpecker is passionate about quality and backs this with a 25-year warranty. The naturally inspired collection includes solid wood, engineered, bamboo and laminate floors, together with all the accessories needed
to fit and finish. Woodpecker only sources timber responsibly, with the complete range FSC or PEFC certified. The latest catalogue was launched in May featuring a volley of new products, inspiring images and refreshed design. As the trend for contemporary parquet flooring continues to thrive, two new chevron designs joined the Goodrich collection. In white and natural shades, Cashmere Oak and Manor Oak bolster the choice of unique patterned looks from the range. Capturing the vogue for reclaimedstyle design, Woodpecker’s new Goodrich distressed herringbone floors recreate the feel of antique timber. Barn Oak and Charred Oak combine interesting shades with a worn surface and tumbled edges for a beautifully authentic look. And there are fresh additions to the latest, next-generation laminate collection. Moisture resistant throughout, with a built-in underlay and highly durable surface, the popular Brecon range has been updated with two new natural shades. Computers for Flooring Best Software Supplier (Flooring)

‘Are you a successful flooring business but feel you’re at maximum capacity? Are you looking to take your business to the next level but sense your systems are holding you back? Computers for Flooring provides a cloud-based flooring business management system, Carman, and is compliant and compatible with GDPR and Making Tax Digital. ‘We constantly work to provide our customers with tools to deliver the highest levels of efficiency and customer service,’ says Mike Hammond, Computers for Flooring business development manager. ‘We have recently developed a communications pack that has changed the way Carman users interact with their customers. ‘Users can now send important information to customers via text message directly from Carman relating to fits, measures, deliveries, marketing and so on. Texts arrive showing the sending business’s name and not just a phone number. This ensures customers are kept up-to-date throughout the journey without the need to pick up a phone. The knock-on effect for users is smarter productivity with a more professional image. ‘Other features include the ability to synchronise with external calendars, for example Google, Outlook and iCal, allowing users to book fits and measures without the fitter having access to
Carman. Text campaigns target specific customers such as landlords, offering relevant products. ‘Our new iOS and Android apps are aimed at fitters and estimators and are a digital job completion sheet. All images gathered on job completion are date and time stamped and uploaded to a secure cloud database, allowing the Carman user in the shop to download when convenient. Carman users utilising this application will notice a significant reduction in re-visits and goodwill gestures for customer complaints,’ says Hammond. ‘With the click of a button the Carman user will be able to access the job file, having access to visual proof of the job and client comments and signature. ‘The app will also have a quick and regimented course of action for any supplier quality issues, allowing communication and photographs to be stored in a central location in the customer file. This information is held in the most secure environment in our UK data centre, and backed up twice daily to another external UK data centre.’ Visit: www.computersforflooring.com

AIS Best Furniture Buying Group

96
Interiors Monthly August 2019
AIS is over the moon to have been voted Best Furniture Buying Group by Interiors Monthly readers in 2019. AIS is the leading furniture and home buying group in the UK and Republic of Ireland, with furniture being the single biggest trading category for the group. Remaining exciting and relevant in its product offer is what gives it the edge, covering all product areas including upholstery, lighting, accessories, garden, cabinet and beds, so members can easily discover their next bestseller. ‘This is the eleventh time AIS has won the award for Best Furniture Buying Group and that is largely down to the support of our large supplier base of leading brands who offer us dynamic, eye-catching and innovative products. We have an invaluable relationship with our suppliers, which is paramount to the success of AIS and therefore our members,’ says Julian Cox, AIS director of furniture. More than half of AIS members benefit from access to furniture and bed ranges from leading brands such as Duresta, G Plan, Baker Furniture, Tempur, Parker Knoll, Alstons, himolla, Ashley Manor, HTL, Premier, Tetrad, Sherborne,
Alexander & James, Hypnos, Harrison, Reylon, Vispring, Silentnight, Venjakob, Kettle Interiors, Classic Furniture and TCH. AIS supports independent retailers ranging from single high street shops to flagship department stores. With around 350 members and a combined retail turnover of more than £2bn, AIS enables independent retailers to profit from the level of buying power and services normally enjoyed by larger high street chains – with no loss of their independence. Although furniture is the largest division in AIS, the group also offers many other interior product categories in areas such as flooring, linens and homewares, which members can access to complete their customer offer. The AIS Furniture Show is once again set to take over Cranmore Park on 19-20 January 2020, following two days of private trading reserved for AIS members, offering the group’s members and the wider trade an opportunity to source exciting ranges and brands. AIS welcomes direct approaches from quality independent retailers wishing to become members. www.aistores.co.uk

Greenwood Retail Best Business Support (Furniture)

‘I am delighted that we have won Best Business Support (Furniture) for the fourth year running and I accept the award with grateful thanks on behalf of the Greenwood team,’ says Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md. ‘We celebrated our 1,000th sale in May and can therefore claim that no other retail sales promotion specialist in this field has more experience in the UK and Irish retail marketplace. Our highly effective sales strategies along with our powerful copyrighted marketing materials mean that retailers can expect to generate from 25% to 50% of their normal annual sales turnover during a three-week Greenwood sale.’ Almost all of the company’s clients are quality independent retailers of
non-food goods. Its sale plans work especially well for retailers of furniture and furnishings, carpets and flooring, homewares, garden products and DIY, giftware, fashion and jewellery. Many of Greenwood’s clients are members of AIS and Minerva. ‘The uncertainty of Brexit continues to cause a significant downturn in big ticket and non-essential spending. However, Greenwood’s clients continue to enjoy record-breaking sales results despite this. We are now almost fully booked for 2019 and well into 2020. Booking in advance guarantees exclusivity for the season before and during your Greenwood sale within your own market territory.’ Visit: www.greenwoodretail.com

‘SMG is all about supporting the independent retailer, and being awarded Best Business Support (Flooring) by Interiors Monthly readers is a fabulous validation of that ethos. SMG has something for every retailer, large or small, long established or just starting out. Members run their business as they see fit but gain advantage from the most comprehensive package of benefits available,’ says Mike Reed, SMG head of group operations. With the group now representing more than 390 retail outlets in the UK, not only is SMG adding to its flooring proposition regularly, it offers members the opportunity to link sell furniture, curtains and bedding as well as providing a comprehensive business support package which is second to none. Independent retailers are attracted to joining SMG as the group guarantees that members can retain their complete independence but at the same time benefit from preferential discounts, rebate schemes and promotions from a comprehensive range of approved suppliers. Not only that, they can access products from any approved supplier via SMG’s Central Purchasing Scheme, even without a direct account. SMG supports retailers in selling branded supplier product with excellent discounts, promotions and rebates but as well as this, retailers are offered the opportunity to debrand as much or as little as they wish in-store. Retailers have the opportunity to develop their own bespoke branding featuring their store name with artwork designed and POS supplied by the group to the retailer’s
specification. What's more, retailers can purchase contemporary SMG ownbranded unitary under the Pure Carpets and Pure Flooring brands. ‘In line with SMG’s core principles, member retailers decide how they want to run their own business with as much or as little retail support as they require. As ever, SMG is always evolving and offering our members more and more benefits to membership. The key driver for SMG has always been to create profitable partnerships between members and approved suppliers. They have the same goals and SMG is able to deliver more sales and greater profitability for both. With these benefits, SMG really does have something for every retailer,’ says Linda Thomas, SMG business and marketing manager. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

National Bed Federation Best Marketing Support (Furniture)
The National Bed Federation has four annual marketing campaigns
106
Interiors Monthly August 2019
‘We are delighted to have won Best Marketing Support (Furniture) thanks to the readers of Interiors Monthly,’ says Lisa Artis, National Bed Federation PR and communications manager. ‘We are a small resource team who work diligently to provide a comprehensive marketing service to bed retailers and manufacturers, so this is a great honour.’ The association has been serving the bed industry for 107 years, working proactively on issues of mutual interest and benefit, championing good practice and improving standards and educating the consumer. With more than 65 manufacturing members, representing approximately 70% of UK production, the NBF recognises the importance of helping the industry to market the products it sells, whether it’s with training courses, awareness campaigns, supporter packs or other marketing materials. The NBF has four annual awareness campaigns: National Bed Month, May Be Time For A New Mattress, Sleeptember and National Sleep In Day. All are embraced every year by retailers and manufacturers who take advantage of the free tools developed to promote the importance of a good comfortable bed, for a great night’s sleep. There is also access to other marketing support materials from the NBF including logos, videos for websites and social media, infographics, informative leaflets and generic press releases.
‘We do what we can to benefit retailers and our NBF members. All our work encourages bed purchases to be made from retailers, especially those stocking NBF Approved member beds. Over the years we’ve had hundreds of retailers and manufacturers support our awareness campaigns in their sales and marketing campaigns. We constantly look for ways to get our members and their retailers to exploit and reinforce key messages and push new bed sales,’ says Artis. Supporting its Code of Practice, which was launched in 2013, the NBF also produces dedicated Code of Practice supporter packs: free POS that supports why consumers should buy NBF Approved member products. Designed to help retailers provide reassurance to consumers that the products they are buying are safe, clean and honest, the kit includes Internet banners – both animated and static – portrait posters and new roundels for retailers to use in-store and online. ‘The annual campaigns, training, the Bed Show and our Code of Practice are just some of the ways that we try to support the industry to make it more successful and better. We’ve been shouting about beds for years and we’ve no intention of stopping. And the more the industry supports our efforts, by building on-key messages, the more (and the better) beds the industry will sell.’ Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Flooring One’s experienced in-house team is delighted to have won the Best Marketing Support (Flooring) award, and as host of the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show, is equally delighted to accept the Best Flooring Exhibition award on behalf of the BGNFS groups. Flooring One also partners with the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show (BGNFS) in May to host more than 60 leading brands showcasing the latest in carpets, rugs, laminates, woods, vinyl, LVT, underlays and accessories. BGNFS is proudly sponsored by Bond Retail Marketing, The Metro Group, Greendale Carpets & Floorings, SMG and Flooring One. ‘There is a strong collaboration between the buying groups that makes the BGNFS a great success. Interiors Monthly August 2019
For the third year in a row January Furniture Show has won the Interiors Monthly Best Furniture Exhibition Award. The 2019 event was the largest yet, introducing two new sectors – BEDS at JFS and LIGHT at JFS. Both new sectors expanded and complemented the extensive product offering to visiting buyers, with the post-show feedback showing that visitors roundly approved of the new developments. Firmly established as the largest and most popular furniture and interiors event in the UK calendar, the awardwinning show saw more than 500 UK and international exhibitors launch 50,000plus new models and product ranges, as well as introducing additions to best-selling collections. The 22,000plus registered visitors included buyers from multiple, department and independent stores, as well as contract and leisure buyers, interior designers and internal specifiers. The organising team behind the event are delighted to have won the award for the third year running. ‘I know that I speak for the whole team when I say ”thank you”: this award means a great deal to all of us. It is immensely gratifying to win for the third successive year – made all the more satisfying because we know that it is voted for by the readers of the magazine,’ says Cleere Scammell, JFS event director.
January Furniture Show returns to the NEC in Birmingham from 19–22 January 2020, and planning is well advanced to continue the upward march of the show. Plans include adding more dedicated specialist furniture and interiors sectors but, as Cleere emphasises, furniture will always be the beating heart of the show. ‘The clue is in the title: January Furniture Show will always be a “furniture” show. The success of JFS proves that there is huge support and a need for a top furniture gathering in the UK. This country’s furniture heritage in design and production is well documented, and we want to provide the best platform possible for both UK and international companies to show off their invention and skill in producing practical, desirable and saleable products. ‘Our success in winning this Interiors Monthly Best Furniture Exhibition award is also testament to our exhibitors, who support JFS and bring their A-game every year, building amazing stands and filling them which with hundreds of new products that enthral and entice the visiting buyers. We are looking forward to a vibrant and lively JFS 2020.’ More than 85% of JFS 2020 is already booked. Returning exhibitors include Silentnight, Parker Knoll, Ercol, Duresta, Italia Living, Tetrad, Skovby, Wiemann, SITS, Westbridge, ROM and Gallery Direct. Visit: www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Sleepeezee Best Website (Furniture)

112
Interiors Monthly August 2019
At the start of 2019 Sleepeezee commissioned PWC to engage in extensive research on the consumer journey of individuals buying a bed: the first manufacturer in the industry to commission this kind of research. The results have helped shape Sleepeezee’s new innovative marketing strategy and an overhaul of the brand. The architecture of its newly designed website has been based around these findings, such that the criteria that are most important to consumers – size, price and comfort – appear first on the website. This allows customers to browse and search according to each factor, to find a sleep solution that suits their budget, lifestyle, room size and comfort preference. The company is extremely proud to have won the award for Best Website – highlighting how its new marketing strategy, based on extensive consumer research, is working positively. The company has seen strong first half sales results for 2019. Sales grew by 24% in April, and by 88% in May – a huge increase compared to the NBF’s sector benchmarks. With an increased investment in marketing, Sleepeezee is creating compelling and eye-catching ranges
with POS to support the models in-store. The Perfectly British Collection is a new range that has received a fantastic response from both press and retailers. Committed to supporting the welfare of our planet, the collection is handmade using components sourced from sustainable suppliers within the UK, helping to reduce its carbon footprint and further strengthening Sleepeezee’s carbon neutral credentials. As well as a commitment to the planet, family values are at the heart of everything Sleepeezee does, and for each Perfectly British mattress sold, a donation will be made to Crisis, a charity which aims to tackle homelessness. A range dedicated to celebrating all things British, the mattresses are designed and made using only British materials, from the pocket springs and natural fillings to the soft woven chemical-free damask cover. All are made within the UK and supported with a fun and eye-catching POS package influenced by a Monopoly theme. Sleepeezee is also proud to have recently won two Which? Best Buy awards for its new Hybrid 2000 model and the Beautyrest Boutique Lexington, further strengthening its offer. Visit: www.sleepeezee.com

Interiors Monthly August 2019
Julian Bowen has been voted the Best Furniture Wholesaler by the readers of Interiors Monthly for the eighth consecutive year. This is accompanied by the firm’s fifth award in a row for the industry’s leading Customer Service, and together these accolades are testament to the Julian Bowen team’s determination to deliver the highest quality furniture at great value for money, supported by industry-leading customer service. ‘Our customers have never faced such a combination of challenges, both cyclical and structural. We know how difficult it can be to navigate such an environment and feel that it is our job to be totally supportive, making it as easy as possible for them to maximise their businesses while working with the team at Julian Bowen in an enjoyable and efficient way. We are both grateful and proud that our customers continue to show such confidence in Julian Bowen and we are working hard constantly to improve all aspects of the proposition that we offer,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. It is the company’s aim to provide the best quality furniture at the best possible prices. This is supported by a heavily invested supply chain incorporating an experienced in-house buying team and domestic and international quality control teams who work in close partnership with a select group of leading manufacturers. Together they have forged an impressive new product development capability in recent years, which has created a platform for significant growth in the business. Indeed, the firm’s current development pipeline is the largest ever with products
to be launched across all key categories of children’s furniture, bedroom, living and dining, and upholstery. Product development is backed up by a continuous ongoing investment programme across the business to ensure an enhanced customer proposition. This has seen significant IT upgrades to maximise business efficiency, from stock management to ordering, distribution and customer service support. This is supported in turn by a progressive staff training programme with a focus upon delivering the best experience for the customer. ‘Our new products have been very well-received in the marketplace over the last few years. Customers can see that we aren’t resting on our laurels and are continually pushing ourselves to give them an ever wider range to choose from, with the quality and prices they are used to and value us for. I’m really excited by our new product pipeline which we’re looking forward to showing to our customer base in the coming months. Associated Weavers has become the first residential carpet manufacturer to use the Econyl fibre with its super-soft Varuna and Yara ranges, part of the Sedna collection, in an effort to help clean up the seas. Econyl has been used in contract carpets since 2011. ‘We are very proud to be the first residential carpet supplier to use Econyl. For future generations there is no option but to be green,’ says Erik Deporte, Associated Weavers ceo. The Eco FusionBac backing is made from recycled PET bottles. Associated Weavers has a three-year exclusive agreement with Econyl producer Aquafil. Econyl is a nylon fibre using items otherwise destined for landfill such as old carpets, and plastic products left in the sea such as fishing nets. The recycled nylon has exactly the same properties as the raw material. What makes it unique is that it can be recycled, recreated and remoulded time and again. The Healthy Seas organisation is working to remove nets for the purpose
of creating healthier seas, and recycling marine litter into textile products. The discarded, lost or abandoned fishing nets are sometimes called ghost nets because they appear invisible underwater and continue to catch fish and other marine animals without human involvement. They are plastic waste that remains in the seas for hundreds of years and does not biodegrade. Millions of marine animals, including sharks, dolphins, seals and turtles get entangled in these nets, leading to suffering and eventual death. Every year, some 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear is lost in the world’s seas and oceans. In October 2018, Healthy Seas’ team of volunteer divers recovered more than four tonnes of ghost nets in deep waters off the coast of the Aeolian Islands. During the mission, the divers recovered their largest ever net and its removal took days of preparational dives to ensure its careful removal from the seabed, after being lost in a storm 10 years ago. Carpet Recycling UK Sustainability (Flooring)
Top: CRUK’s 2019 award winners Below: Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK scheme manager at its 2019 conference
As the UK’s industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet, Carpet Recycling UK champions sustainability in the flooring sector and helps all types of organisations to find new alternative and sustainable disposal outlets for waste carpet. ‘We are very pleased to be receiving this prestigious award for the second time. This demonstrates the value provided by Carpet Recycling UK to the supply chain including its core funders, flooring retailers and contractor members in helping them to divert as much carpet waste as possible from landfill. Doing so helps to create savings on waste disposal and increasing opportunities for reuse and recycling,’ says Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK scheme manager. ‘The industry has made great progress voluntarily over the past 10 years to become greener by working to develop sustainable products and recycling outlets and, in turn, has created resource and cost savings for flooring companies of all sizes.’ CRUK was founded in 2008 by leading UK carpet manufacturers and distributors to divert carpet waste from landfill and find new uses for this raw material resource. Core funders are Cormar Carpet Company, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Brintons Carpets, DESSO, ege, Milliken and Balsan. Having helped to divert over one million tonnes of carpet waste from landfill to date, CRUK enters its second decade with a renewed focus on tangible support for its 110-plus members. ‘Forthcoming policy and legislative changes will have an impact on our
sector. We are doing more and being proactive, sharing knowledge and experience while encouraging the supply chain to interact with us on their challenges and successes. We aim to be the go-to body for the sector,’ says Zeb-Khan. CRUK has been commissioned to work with circular economy consultants Oakdene Hollins on a DEFRA-led tender to build the evidence base for the proposed Government-backed consultation on Extended Producer Responsibility for bulky household waste, which includes carpets and underlay. With strong support and commitment from its core funders, members and the wider flooring sector, CRUK inspires and supports flooring retailers, contractors and fitters to reuse or recycle their installation offcuts, uplifted carpets and carpet tiles. Awareness is growing of how waste carpet can provide a valuable raw material resource for a variety of interesting applications and markets. These include recycled carpet fibre mats for horticultural use, waste carpet being used in the production of underlay products and mattress pads, and carpet tile reuse businesses supplying affordable flooring to charities, social housing providers and commercial organisations. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arises each year in the UK. Last year 175,252 tonnes were diverted from landfill, representing a diversion rate of 44%. CRUK’s target is to increase this by a minimum of 10,000 tonnes year on year. Visit www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

The Metro Group Industry Contribution

Interiors Monthly August 2019
This is a special year for The Metro Group. Forty years in business is an achievement in itself in today’s climate, and since 1979 Metro has continuously evolved to suit the market conditions and provide not only buying power to its members, but also assistance in the form of marketing. For more than 20 years Metro has developed its own brand: Carpet 1st, and retailers and manufacturers have supported the concept, which professionally rebrands some of the bestselling products available under the Carpet 1st umbrella. Metro not only provides a marketing platform for members’ Carpet 1st products but takes the marketing assistance one step further. Since 2014 Metro’s marketing team have been on the road nationally supporting retailers with whatever marketing project they wish to embark upon – from simple price cards to extensive outdoor signage. For the past two years the marketing service has been subsidised for members, while new members have seen incentives to join the group and make use of the
service. One such member is Luxe Floors in Newcastle. With several years in the industry under his belt, owner Paul Keddy joined The Metro Group at a pivotal juncture, when new ventures were taking place at the same time as a move to new premises. Keddy has taken full advantage of the scheme and so far has had new logos, displays, signage and paperwork all created by Metro’s marketing team within the first month of his membership. All work was carried out in-house., from design to manufacture and fitting. Metro is more than just a buying group. Tel: 01204 393 539

Three shades of Affinity255 were used
Affinity255 propels an airport bar into the 1960s with a nostalgic finish Delivering a luxurious bespoke design, Ark Interiors was able to create a high-end bar and restaurant setting for staff and customers to enjoy at Humberside Airport’s Propeller Bar & Grill. Its objective, to provide a nostalgic 1960s aircraft impression in keeping with the history and location, was enhanced with the installation of Polyflor’s Affinity255 in Dappled Oak, Flamed Chestnut and Seasoned Grey Oak. Affinity255 was the ideal choice for the project that combines nostalgic features with a contemporary finish. The collection is designed for heavy traffic environments and is an eclectic mix of authentically reproduced wood plank designs, incorporating contemporary and recycled timber patterns. The 2mm gauge allows Affinity255 to be installed alongside 2mm cushion vinyl flooring, providing a seamless flooring solution that flows throughout any commercial installation. Fitted throughout the entrance, main restaurant and bar areas, Affinity255 is the perfect addition to heavy commercial interiors. The rustic and contemporary timber designs are ideal for the leisure sector, presented in a practical, resilient

and hygienic product construction. Encompassing tan and honey tones in a smooth oak plank pattern, the Dappled Oak shade enhances any interior from entrances and boutique cafĂŠs to healthcare installations and retail stores. The versatile base colours of Seasoned Grey Oak can be paired with other aged reclaimed materials for a time-honoured look, or modern woods and concretes for an industrial effect. With Flamed Chestnut, although bold in design with dominant knots, the inclusion of soft yellows, oranges and
pale taupe shades within each plank creates a comforting look that works beautifully in a design floor. To further enhance the floorcovering, Affinity255 features a cross-linked polyurethane reinforcement providing a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime. It is 100% recyclable and achieves BRE A+ certification for major use areas, making the collection environmentally preferable whilst meeting decorative, practical, budgetary and maintenance objectives. FLATPACK
International affair

Germania manufactures flatpack furniture for the home in Germany ‘Our collection distinguishes itself from other flatpack furniture through higher quality specifications such as soft-close drawers, door dampers and safety glass. We supply our products to high street retailers as well as international and local online retailers,’ says Adrian Eyre, Germania UK co-agent. ‘180 staff at the Schlangen production site make sure that 60,000 pieces of furniture are kept in stock ready for shipment within 48 hours of receiving the order: either to the retailer or directly to the end-consumer on behalf of our local retail partners.’
Nathan Edwards, Germania UK co-agent says the company has clear standards. ‘What sounds a cliché to some is strength of vision to others; and to our customers the benefits are tangible. The company is really driven when it comes to developing pioneering products: who wants half-realised ideas? Attention to detail is everything when it comes to manufacturing furniture that is not only attractive to look at but also easy to assemble and use. That – and ensuring the complete package. Anybody who buys our flatpack furniture can be sure that all the necessariy components are
included. And delivered promptly – because nobody wants to wait to make their furnishing dreams a reality.’ Carolyn Ruth, Germania Republic of Ireland agent says the company offers several benefits to customers. ‘Flatpack furniture is perfect for drop shipping; 98% of orders leave the warehouse in less than 48 hours; there is support through local agents, comprehensive marketing material and a high quality in-house customer service centre, and returns and spare parts can be managed on our website.’ Visit: www.mygermania.com

consumers become more adventurous,’ says Inga Morris-Blincoe, Lifestyle Floors general manager. ‘We know we need to provide retailers with products to meet these changing demands, and we pride ourselves on being at the leading edge of designer flooring. We’ve always made sure we are releasing unique designs to help our retailers stand out, from the Camden range of laminate to our Maison Chic carpet. And now, we are excited for retailers to explore our exclusive new LVT designs and Firework range of brightly coloured carpets. ‘Firework is the direct result of feedback we have received from consumers, who wanted more budgetfriendly ranges in an exciting colour spectrum.
