EDITOR’S COMMENT
Protesting too much? Sales growth may have returned at Carpetright but is it sending out the right mood music? Carpetright’s shareholders would have been glad to learn that the chain has seen a return of like for like sales growth in recent weeks. But this will be tempered by the comparison with a year ago when it was preparing for the CVA and sales dropped by 14.6%: it would have been hugely surprising if sales hadn’t recovered. Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive says that he is ‘pleased to be able to adopt a more upbeat tone when reflecting on the current state of our company,’ in its annual results. But throughout he takes a defensive line, trying to reassure shareholders several times that it remains the largest flooring retailer in the country. ‘Carpetright remains comfortably the largest floorcovering retailer in the UK… Despite recent upheavals and the restructuring of our business, we retain clear market leadership by some distance in the UK and this is a strong position from which to build our recovery,’ he says, for example. Rivals are (still) causing problems: ‘Once we get to the one-year anniversary of a competitor store opening we begin to recover lost ground rapidly as the local market stabilises,’ Walsh says. OK, money was short to convert all the stores to the latest format, but why does it take a year for sales to recover? ‘We have been extremely robust in taking on competition. It’s clear that this is a very difficult market for a new entrant and brand to gain traction unless they are prepared to pursue an uneconomic model, of course, until time and money run out.’ Not a new message from the chain, but surely Walsh should be equally worried about Carpetright’s money running out as he seems to be about others. A second share issue isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Thanks to all of you who voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2019 (especially those who did so in the final few hours of voting). We’ll bring you the winners next month. Don’t miss Whitemeadow’s superb collection of upholstery in the Cobden Room at Manchester Central. Visit: www. whitemeadow.com

NEWS
Carpetright sees return of UK sales growth but looks to cut Irish branches Carpetright has seen UK like for like sales growth return in the past two months. The group says UK sales rose by 8.5% in the eight weeks to 22 June, compared to a 14.6% fall in the same period a year ago. This contrasts performance in the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands where like for like sales growth fell from 10.6% to 4.3%. ‘We remain the clear number one player in floorcoverings, having maintained our market leadership during an exceptionally challenging period, and our brand attributes remain strong. ‘Our work is far from finished, and while economic and political uncertainties cloud the near-term outlook for the
retail sector, our turnaround plan is very much on track,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive. The chain says its has too many stores in the Republic of Ireland and will look to reduce the number in the face of falling sales. Sales fell by 5.5% to €8.6m in the year to 27 April as it closed one branch, reducing numbers to 20. Like for like sales dropped by 1.3%. ‘This business has an oversized store footprint which we are looking to reduce as opportunities arise. We believe, at the core of the Irish business, we have a strong operation focused on the major cities capable of delivering value to the group once we have an economic operating footprint,’ says Walsh. Carpetright’s Irish stores have an average lease length of 3.3 years.
Anderson to head Silentnight Silentnight Group has named former Farrow & Ball chief commercial officer Neil Anderson to head the bed manufacturer, succeeding outgoing md Steve Freeman. Freeman had been md since September 2011 and will be an advisor to the group. The group has also recruited Ian Lambert as marketing director Silentnight brands. Lambert was previously marketing director at Magnet owner Nobia UK. He succeeds Nick Booth (also a former
Magnet marketing director) who moved to Harrison Spinks in April after seven years in the role. ‘Our aim is to continue to build upon the achievements of the last seven years, as we transition the Silentnight brand into being the number one brand in the total sleep category, from its early origins as a mattress and bed producer and expanding further from our strong UK base into becoming a major International player for the future,’ says Adrian Fawcett, Silentnight Group chairman.

Profits jump at Dreams Bed chain Dreams enjoyed a double-digit increase in profits in the past year. Pre-tax profits rose by 11.7% to £32.7m in the 12 months to 24 December 2018. Sales rose by 2.9% to £309m. Like for like sales growth slowed from 3.3% to 1.9%. Pre-tax margin rose from 10.1% to 11%. The 198 store group saw net cash rise from £11.4m to £22.7m. ‘2018 was a challenging year for the UK retail market. We have remained focused on providing an excellent range of products at the right price point, which, coupled with our healthy balance sheet, means that we have had the flexibility to adapt to market conditions. ‘This approach has served us well throughout the year and has seen us continue to invest across both our online and physical store estate. As a result, we are proud to have delivered our fifth year of continued sales and profit
growth,’ says Mike Logue, Dreams ceo. ‘Looking ahead, the sector continues to face difficult market conditions, which have been well publicised, but our continued growth and investment means we are in a solid position at the start of 2019.’
Dreams: ‘in a solid position’ says ceo Mike Logue

Housing transactions fall The number of houses sold in the UK fell in May, compared with the same period in 2018. HMRC says non-seasonally adjusted sales were 5.8% lower than in 2018, and similar to those seen in 2016. The seasonally adjusted number of transactions fell by 6.4% between April and May and was 11.3% lower than May 2018.

Dunelm raises profit forecast for second time Dunelm has raised its full-year profit forecast for the second time since April on the back of strong sales in May and June. In April it said profits would be higher than analysts’ forecasts of £115m-£118.5m: now it sales profits will be between £124m and £126m for the year to 29 June. ‘Dunelm has continued to see strong trading across its business and therefore expects the outturn to be ahead of the board's previous expectations. ‘Since we last updated on 10 April, we have seen very good year-on-year total like for like growth, particularly in May and June, reflecting both the soft comparator period (Q4 2018 total LFL growth of 0.1%) and the unseasonably favourable weather conditions this year,’ it says. ‘As a result, the board currently expects profit before tax for the year to be in the range of £124m-£126m.’

JYSK shrugs off footfall woes Furniture and interiors chain JYSK says it has seen no evidence of the decline in retail park footfall in May. Footfall fell by 0.8% during the month according to BRC/Springboard (a much smaller decline than that of high streets or shopping centres). ‘We have seen the footfall statistics for May [but] we have certainly not seen this across our Lincoln store or the rest of the UK, with continued strong customer growth, and of course that is very pleasing,’ says David Ashton, JYSK country manager. ‘In fact May 2019 was up against a record-breaking May 2018, a month that benefitted drastically from the heatwave of 2018, yet despite this Lincoln is now our number one store and we have broken many other records throughout the country.’ The chain’s Lincoln store was relocated and given its latest store format at the start of May and subsequently saw footfall treble compared with May 2018 and sales rise 326%.

SERVICE
Richard Renouf
Now to the court Mrs A’s flooring issue takes a legal turn The story continues. It’s five months since I told you about the exchange of emails with Mrs A (see Interiors Monthly February). Her son-in-law had fitted her flooring and he had done a perfect job – in her eyes. The problems were obviously because the product was faulty and my report had not altered her perspective. She had done her best to research my background, looking to find evidence of bogus qualifications and/or collusion between the retailer and me. She’d written to me requesting copies of all the certificates I list in my CV, and accused me of fraud because she’d discovered my limited company had only been formed a year or so and she assumed I’d done no inspection work before this. She’d also issued proceedings against the retailer, so now I was the expert witness and I simply advised her to direct any questions through the appropriate channels. A hearing date was set but the cost of attending court was disproportionate to the value of the claim so the retailer went alone. It was simply a preliminary hearing and the case was adjourned. The retailer
told me when a new date had been set and it coincided with visits I was to do in the same area so I was able to arrange my schedule around the hearing. When I had first visited Mrs A she was charming. A cup of tea and a plate of shortbread was no problem, and she was friendly and chatty. The Mrs A who glared across the court waiting room when I arrived was different altogether. If you could put looks like her’s in a bottle, it would kill 110% of all known germs. As we were in Scotland, parties for all the day’s cases were called in at 10am, then sent off with a time to return once the sheriff had worked out the day’s order. I waited outside as Mrs A and the retailer’s representative went into the courtroom. The sheriff didn’t need anything more than my written report, so I was still outside when, 25 minutes later, the door opened and a thunder-faced Mrs A stormed past me. Then the retailer’s representative came out, suppressing an enormous grin in case Mrs A turned round. When she was gone he told me what had happened. The flooring had been bought on
account: her son’s account. The sheriff had warned her that she needed to show there was a direct contract between her and the retailer but she couldn’t do this. He’d also warned her that it was not appropriate to use her son to produce an ‘expert’ report about flooring that her son-in-law had installed and she’d have to convince him that her son was suitably qualified and independent if he was to take his report into account. Mrs A’s case was dismissed. There was no contract between her and the retailer, the sheriff said, and even if there was the integrity of her expert was doubtful. Besides, the ‘expert’ son had agreed the fitting instructions had not been followed but argued that they were not right and the way the flooring had been done was the only possible way. The sheriff found this unbelievable and that was that. The legal system may not be completely perfect, but it’s there for customers and retailers alike. Trend setters Habitat has identified three key influences for AW19, and some design stories. Visit: www.habitat.co.uk JAPAN ‘A calming, unpretentious aesthetic with uncomplicated contours and pure materials including light woods, “wabi-sabi” ceramics and handwoven textiles. Cool indigo saturates this look, a nod to the traditional Japanese “boro” technique using indigo-dyed hemp. “Boro” involved the repairing of textiles through stitching or patching fabrics together to make garments last longer. Designer Martha Coates has used this as
a starting inspiration for her contemporary Indigo cushion and bedding designs that use “sashiko” (stiches) as intricate graphic patterns. The new Layton ceiling and floor lamp designed by James Cottingham – with its nod to the simplicity of the boule japanaise – heightens this modern Japanese aesthetic with a soft, tranquil light cast through frosted glass,’ says Kate Butler, Habitat head of design.

I’ve looked at a range of symbols and used them for their shapes rather than any specific meaning, playing with colour, scale and positioning of these for our new embroidered Gino and Diaz cushions. Paper-cut collage is also a favourite technique of mine that translates well onto textiles at Habitat, bringing together
bold blocks of colour and geometric shapes which are slightly irregular and obviously hand-cut. The reassembled feel of the Ebba cushions and Jaxson rug is from where I’ve arranged pieces of collage onto paper in numerous variations and then experimented with colour to tie in with our seasonal colour palette,’ says Martha Coates, Habitat textile designer.

Parlane will show its AW19 collection at the exhibition
Parlane is returning to the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival When Parlane last exhibited at the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, Top of the Pops was still being broadcast (just). Now, 13 years on, it is returning to the Harrogate exhibition from 14-17 July.

‘The show offers a fantastic opportunity for showcasing our new AW19 product launches, and our team of visual merchandisers are planning a fabulous stand, designed to catch the eye,’ says Matt Baldock, Parlane head buyer. ‘We’re careful to bring together a curated product offering reflecting the latest trends but equally ensuring that it is in keeping with the well-known Parlane style. We aim to inspire retailers with a product catalogue that offers a point of difference in the market at competitive prices. ‘Our new Living collection is split into three different looks. Spicy burnt oranges and hot russet reds give a bold, lively feel. For a softer, more delicate look there are blush pink and terracotta shades, feathers and pretty pearlised finishes. Finally, black furniture, large pots of exotic faux greenery and metallic gold accessories against a backdrop of deep midnight blue, are ideal for those who like the more dramatic.’
The new collection includes a festive selection, featuring a magical ‘Woodland Christmas’ range full of natural materials and creatures of all kinds, including the Scandinavian Tomte, a mythological character believed to protect your home. There is also a cute and fluffy side to Christmas: floaty feathers in pastel pink and white feature on trees, baubles, floral stems and other festive decorations. The stand at Harrogate will showcase a large selection from Parlane’s AW19 collection, but for those who would like to view the entire range, its Newby Hall Stables showroom is close by, near Ripon. The company is also holding a £2m warehouse clearance sale. ‘This is our biggest ever, including over 2,000 products with up to 50% off. We’re clearing stock ahead of a warehouse move that will enable us to hold larger quantities, providing customers with better availability and service. Visit stand M26/M31 for a brochure,’ says Baldock. Visit: www.parlaneinternational.co.uk

Associated Weavers has expanded its Invictus branding into LVT
After 30 months of planning and research Associated Weavers has entered the LVT market with Invictus Luxury Vinyl Flooring. During that time the company sought the views of 50 retailers on colours, styles and in-store presentation. Associated Weavers has made a name for itself for creating eye-catching and high impact brands since the launch of iSense in 2013, followed by Invictus in 2015. Invictus became its most iconic brand, featuring the instantly recognisable Maori warrior. The LVT launch has seen it continue with the Invictus branding with its links to strength and durability, whilst introducing a new champion, the Highlander. There are 84 SKUs across the three ranges: Maximus Dryback (52 SKUs), Optimus Dryback (12) and Maximus Click (20 with matching scotias). These cover wood planks, parquet and tiles. Maximus Dryback consists of luxury vinyl planks and tiles with a wear layer of 0.55mm, making it suitable for heavy commercial use.

Optimus Dryback is a collection of luxury planks and tiles with a wear layer of 0.3mm, designed to be excellent value for money and to handle all the challenges of daily family life. Maximus Click consists of luxury vinyl planks and tiles with a wear layer of 0.5mm to be installed using the rigid click system. A particular feature of this
range is the matching scotias: cut and moulded from the same material as each plank, meaning colour match discrepancies are a thing of the past. All ranges have a Scratchmaster top layer surface PUR coating for wear protection. Feature strips are also available in five colours. The company wanted to create a

custom stand for its new product, the basis of which would be a paperless office. It contains customer samples and a starter pack that includes a floor mat, PU cleaner and felt pads. It also showcases the brand’s movie and provides a clear explanation of all the USPs. Above all, it aims to bring product selection into the 21st century and help the customer and salesperson alike. It guides customers through an efficient and fun-to-do purchase process, allowing them to compare and contrast their favourites instantly on-screen in a wide variety of room settings, and even add instant pricing into the equation for the product – and fitting if the retailer so chooses. At the core of the stand is a QR code based system that allows quick and easy scanning of products into the comparison tool. All Invictus Luxury Vinyl Flooring can be combined with matching Invictus broadloom carpet. The stand contains two boxes holding four ranges of carpet selected to match the LVT.
Associated Weavers has established a training academy
A new website features a store locator and allows the consumer to use a similar visualiser to that on the in-store stand to generate a unique code, which they then bring to the store to recall their selections and finalise purchase. Stock is already in place in Birmingham and a new sales force, headed by Jonathan Davies, is in position countrywide. Convinced that salespeople who know

IXPE acoustic backing layer and 5G-i locking technology. ‘Whether designing a warm, inviting home interior scheme or a large-scale commercial installation, aesthetics are as important as practicality, especially when considering a floorcovering. Expona EnCore Rigid Loc offers a flooring solution that caters for both residential and commercial interiors. The rigid
construction gives the floor exceptional stability and its acoustic layer reduces impact sound by 19dB, exceeding UK building regulations whilst also providing comfort and warmth underfoot. ‘The use of 5Gi locking technology provides superior performance in a quick-to-install floorcovering and the loose-lay format means no adhesive is required, reducing installation time and cost,’ says Tom Rollo, Polyflor UK and International marketing director. The collection features 12 faithfully replicated wood designs that have been expertly selected, bringing together the natural beauty of timber and its authentic surface textures. Each design features fine grain and knot detailing and micro-bevelled edges for a timeless appearance typical of real wooden floors. Polyflor’s unique polyurethane reinforcement creates a scratch and stain resistant finish that makes it ideal for modern households with families and pets, as well as heavy commercial interiors with high foot traffic. Expona EnCore Rigid Loc is also 100% waterproof and an ideal alternative to hardwood flooring, offering all the beauty of real wood with the resilience of LVT. ‘Perfectly suited to both residential and commercial interiors, the Expona EnCore collection offers a brand-new SPC product construction to the market with a unique set of performance benefits. Contemporary wood designs combined with a quick and easy installation method will ensure it is a popular choice with contractors and specifiers alike,’ says Rollo. Expona EnCore is presented within a sampling package that includes a brochure and comprehensive presenter. Consumers can order free samples from the Polyflor website. Expona EnCore achieves a generic BRE A+ rating in major use areas and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below any globally determined levels. It is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor scheme and contains an average of 15% recycled content. Visit: www.polyflor.com

Karndean Designflooring predicts a trend in abstract floors There will be a rise in interest in abstract floor designs as more and more home owners look to add pattern in the home, according to Karndean Designflooring. This follows the launch of its new Victorian-inspired Heritage collection and the latest update to its geometric Kaleidoscope range.
‘Whereas previously home decorators and renovators have looked to the walls or accessories to introduce pattern, they are now going to the floor,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Dsignflooring national retail sales manager. ‘Instead of relying on pops of pattern in cushions or fabrics, a patterned floor

can make small spaces feel bigger and create a statement in larger areas. Likewise, patterned floors can be used to zone out areas of the home or divide separate living areas to cater for multigeneration and co-living spaces. ‘Heritage has been really popular with customers looking to achieve the original character of elegant period interiors or for creating a contemporary statement look. Perfect for busy rooms where highly durable flooring is required, Karndean’s Heritage Collection reinvents historical style with all the benefits of luxury vinyl tiles, offering a practical choice for an on-trend, modern floor.’ Kaleidoscope recently welcomed two new designs inspired by traditional Moroccan and medieval Spanish architecture. The Casablanca and Marrakesh tiless are inspired by the artistic techniques of traditional Moroccan architecture, brought to the Iberian Peninsula during the 8th century. One creative design, available in two subtle yet striking colourways, offers a modern interpretation of these iconic patterns with a non-uniform, patchwork arrangement that incorporates a stylish combination of geometric forms, curves and crests. Casablanca shows off this quirky design in a monochrome palette of grey shades to create a contemporary statement while Marrakesh uses a mix of natural earthy colour tones for a warmer, more playful look. Come outside
A selection of new outdoor mirrors
Gallery Direct has broadened its offer and will add two new looks in the autumn Earlier this year Gallery Direct launched its outdoor collection, adding another category to its catalogue. The diverse range of outdoor furniture and wall decor includes tables, chairs and benches, along with clocks and mirrors. The introduction is part of the company’s on-going policy of continual new product development: adding pieces to existing collections and introducing new ranges. The next main launch will be at the Autumn Fair, from 1-4 September at the NEC. ‘We are really looking forward to the show, where we‘ll be showcasing our AW19 collection. This will be the largest AW launch in Gallery’s history with about 500 new products, including furniture, upholstery, wall decor, lighting, accessories and soft furnishings, featuring three key looks,’ says James Hudson, Gallery Direct sales and business development director. One of these looks is Luxe, which encompasses sophistication and luxury, with a combination of dark, sensuous

tones and metallic finishes. ‘This will be a huge launch, including upholstery with indulgent shapes and furniture featuring metal and glass display units. Wall decor including small accent mirrors, floating glass and antiqued mercury glass mirrors and large wall art will also be introduced, along with new lighting ranges, in golds, mottled glass and interesting shapes. Last but not least, there will be a new selection of soft furnishings, including rugs, cushions and throws offering deep colours, bright metallics and textures. ‘Luxe is one of the on-trend looks at the moment. Our current offering has proved to be really popular. We’ve achieved fantastic sales and received incredibly positive feedback from customers, so we are extending this look, introducing new furniture ranges for more choice,’ says Hudson. ‘At the same time, we understand that variety is important: not everyone wants Luxe. Our current design directory features five further looks: Bohême,
Elegant Industrial, Nordic, Calm Oasis and Artisan, each offering its own unique feel. And for AW19 we will be introducing two new looks.’ Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Brook + Wilde says Elite is the most premium mattress available in the bed in a box sector
A new partnership is targeting the upper market Breasley’s partnership with Brook + Wilde to produce the brand’s go-to best quality Elite range has begun. The leading UK bed manufacturer has teamed with the award winning start-up as exclusive supplier of the high end collection for bricks and mortar retailers. The range is available in single, double, king and super king sizes and three comfort levels: soft, medium and firm. Elite mattresses consist of eight layers which work together to provide its levels
of functionality, comfort and support. These include a removable washable cover and memory foam protector. There is a thermo-regulating top layer and a refreshing natural balm to aid deeper, more restful sleep. It also provides a higher level of moisture evaporation to keep the sleeper cool and comfortable. Advanced wave technology supports shoulder and hip alignment and pocket springs support the individual movement of the sleeper. The mattress does not
require rotation and comes with a 10-year guarantee and 100-night trial. Brook + Wilde says the Elite mattress is the most premium mattress available in the bed in a box sector, in line with the brand’s objective of being the default luxury mattress within the rolled mattress sector. The collection is available with a choice of headboards and bed bases from Breasley’s Salus collection. This includes Breasley’s new ottoman storage base or divan bases with optional storage options and choice of Plush fabrics. ‘Brook + Wilde is an exciting addition to our higher end rolled mattress collection and delivers an exceptional level of comfort and choice. The Elite range comes in as the highest quality option at the luxury end of the sector and we look forward to working with Brook + Wilde as it goes from strength to strength,’ says Rob King, Breasley sales director. Brook + Wilde also supports reforestation, planting a tree for every mattress sold. In addition, the company operates a zero landfill policy. Visit: www.breasley.co.uk www. brookandwilde.com

Sweet success
Harmony is adding optional items to its ranges Jason Stone, Harmony Furnishings director says he is overwhelmed by the success of the company’s new bedroom collections. Launched earlier this year they are the result of 12 months’ consultation and development, which focused on meeting the needs of today’s bedroom furniture retailer. ‘The future-proofed design features of the collections are now paying dividends with the introduction of the
first phase of interior and exterior optional packages, such as extra shelves, hanging rails and LED light packs. These essential options will be complemented at the end of the year with further optional extras, allowing customers to create stylish, functional, individual bedroom storage solutions,’ he says. Being stocked in Harmony’s central UK warehouse ensures delivery of typically seven to ten days. ‘This allows retailers to
sell with confidence knowing customer orders will be fulfilled quickly, a must in today’s retail environment. ‘The Genoa Collection features a light oak exterior with linen lined interiors matched to high gloss grey fronts. This combination has proved very popular with retailers, who have also reacted well to the wardrobe’s vertical build system and in-built quality touches.’ Visit: www.harmonyfurnishings.co.uk

WOOD AND LAMINATE
Grey Fontia Concrete in Aqua+ Dark Ripon Oak
Versatility
Egger’s Pro collection has five board sizes for flexibility Egger Pro Laminate Flooring consists of 80 innovative decors available in five versatile board formats. 18 of the decors feature Egger’s Aqua+ technology, with a specially developed core board for a water-resistant flooring solution. ‘Egger Pro Laminate Flooring responds to the demand for a robust flooring solution that not only caters for current trends but stands up to wear and looks good for longer. With moisture-resistant options available in the Aqua+ range, Pro Laminate Flooring offers a high quality floor for any environment, both commercially and in the home,’ says Craig James, Egger Flooring Products UK sales manager. The decors range from classic and contemporary woodgrains in warming, cooling and neutral colour tones to ceramic, stone and tile reproductions.
The board formats – Classic, Medium, Large, Long and Kingsize – are offered to maximise interior space. With the optimal panel size, bold and creative decors unfold across open-plan areas, while narrow floors are enhanced and compact spaces enjoy the illusion of size. The Aqua+ technology offers a solution for applications in wet areas. ‘Aqua+ is the ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, entrance lobbies and hallways in both private and commercial areas. As well as woodgrain decors, Aqua+ Pro Laminate Flooring includes tile-inspired designs, for a more costeffective and efficient alternative to classic tile flooring. An additional benefit for wet areas is easier cleaning, as Aqua+ is suitable for steam cleaning,’ says James. Egger Pro Laminate Flooring consists of a base layer balancer, wood-based

coreboard, decor paper image and highly resilient surface layer. The HDF swell barrier provides a strong and sustainable board structure made with 100% PEFC certified wood fibres, while the highly abrasion-resistant surface increases strength and durability. A number of decors carry R10, a specially developed surface that provides anti-slip properties, while the product also boasts anti-static technology and UV colourfast resistance. Available in thicknesses of 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm, it has a use rating of 31 in 7mm, 32 in 8mm and 10mm, and a heavy-use classification of 33 in 12mm options. The boards are 100% PVC-free with no softeners or toxic dyes used throughout production. Antistatic properties and a natural composition ensure a healthy living environment in both private and commercial spaces. Additionally, laminate is a particularly hygienic floorcovering as the sealed surface repels dirt and is easy to clean. ‘Egger Pro Laminate Flooring is installed using the UNI fit! click system. This is 40% faster than other systems due to Egger’s flexible and floating installation technology. No tools are required and multiple installers can work simultaneously in one room. As well as saving time and money, the UNI fit! click system has a very sturdy connection and is easy to install around doors, pipes and radiators,’ says James. Visit: www.egger.co.uk

A new option Wood plastic composite is among the fastest growing flooring products in the US Last September, The Flooring Show hosted the launch of Pro-Tek WPC, a new type of engineered vinyl flooring. What is it that makes this different, and how does it compare to traditional LVT and other composite constructions such as stone polymer composite? Whilst wood plastic composite flooring is still a fairly new concept in the UK, it is one of the fastest growing surface sectors in the US, where it is offered as an alternative to LVT and laminate. In essence, Pro-Tek WPC combines an authentic registered embossed vinyl finish with two additional layers: a waterproof, jointed core and an attached acoustic underlay base. These extra layers provide specific features and benefits to the specifier, flooring contactor and end user. ‘In terms of actual feel, the additional layers give Pro-Tek WPC its robustness and enhance its performance on uneven
floors. Issues like telegraphing, where subfloor irregularities can mirror through to the surface of a thinner vinyl product, are eliminated. But whilst the floor has a substantial feel, it is much lighter, more pliable and easier to cut than SPC designs which have a heavier stone plastic composite core,’ says Paul Heatley, Pro-Tek general manager UK, Ireland and Europe. ‘During installation, the product’s integral underlay base, made from IXPE foam, speeds installation and reduces the amount of floor preparation needed. It also provides acoustic sound performance up to 24db. The product’s glueless joint, the Unilin Unifit, then offers the best technical performance of all fold-down locking systems. Installation is fast and easy in all respects, angling, folding down and snapping without need for adhesive.’ Heatley says that underfoot, the combination of the foam underlay and wood-based core provides a quieter,

softer, more comfortable feel compared to hard materials like natural stone and SPC composites. All materials used are also 100% recyclable and phthalate-free. ‘Visually Pro-Tek WPC’s natural look is achieved with a registered emboss technique. This is used across the range, to create 40 individual floor designs in a variety of finishes, colours and formats. Wood effects are divided into four collections: Excel rustic planks; Distressed vintage designs; Excel Long Plank, which includes wider, longer boards, and Essential – a range designed for new-build homes, refurbishment and student accommodation.’ A fifth collection, Excel Tile, includes eight designs in marble, slate and travertine effects. A complementary WPC accessories range also includes five profile designs, with a colour and decor-matched option for every floor. Visit: www.pro-tek-flooring.com

Milestone
Greenwood Retail has hosted its 1,000th sales event Sales promotion company Greenwood Retail has reached the landmark figure of 1,000 sales events. Independent bed retailer Jones & Tomlin launched the event in May at its Worthing, West Sussex branch. ‘Our third Greenwood sale has been another great success as well as being Greenwood’s 1,000th sale. That’s three great results in a row for us over five
years,’ says Adam Tomlin, Jones & Tomlin md. The retailer also has branches in Horsham and Chichester. ‘We are delighted to have reached this substantial milestone and to have worked alongside so many talented people. It is fitting and most appropriate that our 1,000th event should happen while working for such a fine company of people as Jones & Tomlin,’ says

Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md. ‘When I launched Greenwood Retail back in 2002 I wanted to create the most powerful and successful sales promotions for independent retailers. ‘We only work with quality retailers and all Greenwood sales events are designed to send a positive message about the reasons for the sale. For example, the store might be clearing its stock to undertake a huge refurbishment or in order to update its product offer. ‘Even a closing down sale should be marketed in a way that clearly communicates the owner’s good reasons for doing so: for example selling up so they can retire or change career.’ Greenwood says retailers can expect to generate from 30% to 100% of annual turnover in 17 days of trading, while maintaining commercial margins. ‘We have even had some sales that have generated 100% of turnover in as little as five days. We host around 50 to 60 sales events each year, and each one is meticulously planned for maximum impact and client return on investment,’ says Eaton. ‘Here’s to the next 1,000 sales events.’ Visit: www.greenwoodretail.com

Spread the cost
More than half of shoppers spent more because they had finance, according to V12
POS finance can help grow sales The age of subscription is upon us. Consumers are now more used to paying monthly for everyday things such as gym membership, software and online streaming. This means that consumers are comfortable budgeting and spreading the cost for a range of products and services to make them more affordable. This has driven a ‘want it now’ mind-set amongst many groups of consumers, who do not expect to wait for the things they want. Offering POS credit can really help to grow your business. Promoting that you
offer finance can help you attract these new groups of customers who perhaps would not have otherwise made a purchase as they don’t have the cash readily available to buy the furniture they would like – but who also don’t have the patience to save up for it. Research from a 2018-2019 customer survey by V12 Retail Finance found that 53% of customers spent more because they were spreading the cost with finance, and 96% said they would choose to pay for their goods with V12 Retail Finance.
Competitiive finance is a powerful sales tool

Having competitive finance options available is also a powerful tool for a retailer’s sales team. Looking at a finance calculator with customers can help to increase their spend, making an expensive piece affordable by breaking the cost into monthly payments, or even helping you to sell matching pieces or complete sets. ‘Partner with V12 for your finance offering and our friendly team of experts will work with you to make sure you maximise the benefit to your business. We will show you how you can use finance to reach those new customers and sell more to your existing ones,’ says Andrew Phillips, V12 sales director. ‘We know that time is precious when you’re running a business, so we keep things simple and make sure our training and set-up fits around you. ‘There are lots more great reasons to offer finance through V12: our seamless application process; fast credit decisions, 24 hours a day; our customer ID and verification process is secure, simple and paperless; our finance calculator helps your customers to budget, in-store and online; we offer real-time reporting to see how your sales are going and dedicated support and training videos are available online 24/7.’ Visit: www.v12retailfinance.com

Designed for you Ordorite’s software is targeted at furniture and bed retailers ‘For furniture retailers, the industry can be quite complex: it’s not as simple as just creating a sale. There are multiple options in terms of products, special orders, selling from containers, transferring inventory between stores, pick lists, managing deliveries, warehouse, customer service, forecasting, deposits, return on exchanges: the list is endless. Furniture retailers should be looking for niche retail software that is specific to the furniture sector,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo. Ordorite Software, a retail management software for the furniture and bedding sector, has features such as point of sale, purchasing, warehouse, delivery, customer service and KPI reporting. ‘We are always innovating our product to make sure it’s the best it can be, and we are excited to announce we have added some new features,’ says Connolly. ‘We have designed an innovative marketing tool to help get your customers back in store. Our marketing tool has a variety of features: you can now understand your customers based on their buying habits. It segments them into different groups using RFM analysis based on recency, frequency and monetary values. We have pre-built
60
Interiors Monthly July 2019
marketing templates to enable you to send your segmented customers personalised campaigns via text, email or newsletter based on their needs. ‘You can analyse the marketing campaigns you send out to customers, how many re-purchased in store and how much revenue they spent. The software will allow you to manage and analyse the quotes you send out to customers and monitor what people say about you online. We integrate with Google, Facebook and TrustPilot so you can manage social reviews about your products and services. ‘The software prompts you during a sales order to ask the customer about future interests in any other types of furniture. This will record their interests and subsequently remind you to send those customers marketing material
based on their interests. ‘As well as adding new features to our software, we are also expanding our team. We have recently added to our Manchester team, and are always looking for individuals in onboarding and software development. ‘Our development plan is fully focused on furniture and bed retailers. We always listen to our customers and build our designs specifically to their needs. We have designed software for furniture people by furniture people: our team come from furniture retail backgrounds so they know the industry inside out, and can make sure our customers get the best possible product on the market. ‘For more information on our retail management software, visit us at the Manchester Furniture Show.’ Visit: www.ordorite.com

Gliptone products have been treating leather since 1947
Taking care
There can be confusion over how leather should be cared for Staingard is regularly called upon to provide technical assistance and advice to manufacturers, retailers and consumers and has been doing so for approaching 15 years. During that time very little has changed in terms of the nature of the complaints and enquiries it deals with. Fashion influencers dictate flirtations with colour variations and finishes but in the main the leather itself has not evolved greatly either: the market is still dominated by good quality corrected and pigmented leathers that provide a stable, flexible and durable fabric for the creation of some top upholstery designs. Leather care has likewise seen little evolution from the basic protect and care. The default advice given to consumers Leathergard products
62
Interiors Monthly July 2019
remains ‘Follow manufacturer’s advice’, and according to Staingard herein is the problem, because most manufacturers actually provide little, if any, guidance. ‘Where they do it is often vague and in some cases actually misleading. Typically “Wipe over with a soft cloth” is tantamount to saying “Don’t do anything.” That is hardly reassuring to a customer that has dye transfer, or wants to take care of an expensive leather sofa,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. Staingard recently had two requests for service and technical assistance that resulted from the same problem: the customer had an 18-month-old recliner with a badly soiled headrest, caused by ingress over time from sweat and grease
from head contact with the leather. ‘The customer had contacted the retailer whose response was, “Did you use the care products provided?” to which the customer said “No” because the manufacturer’s instructions were contrary,’ says Aiston. The result was a stand-off and a disgruntled customer. ‘The manufacturer says it is wear and tear and the retailer says it’s neglect. So where does liability lie? The customer wanted our opinion on whether the damage was acceptable on furniture of that age and could it have been avoided? Our answers were simple: yes, it could have been avoided, and acceptability is not something that can be quantified since there is no standard or precedent. ‘Staingard products represent the best products for leather care available to both consumers and trade customers and have been developed as a result of extensive research, development and user satisfaction. All Staingard products are available in consumer-friendly, personalised packaging. Trade products are distributed with ease of use and performance as key attributes and our colour-matching service sets the bar high with pigments providing exceptional durability and exacting standards.’ Visit: www.staingard.co.uk

AIS organises several shows during the year
AIS offers more than just products Associated Independent Stores is the largest independent non-food buying group in the UK and Republic of Ireland with furniture the single largest category. Of its almost 250 members more than 150 are furniture specialists or department stores selling furniture, and others include cookware stores, fashion stores and garden centres. It also has a number of specialist divisions in flooring (Flooring One), toys (plaY-room) and sports (Intersport). AIS is more than just a buying group. As well as providing access to major brands its experienced selectors source exclusive products and develop own brands to give a point of competitive difference and improve margins. This is particularly strong in furniture with
exclusive models and ranges from leading brands and suppliers in upholstery, cabinet, beds and bedroom furniture. It also owns heritage brands Stag and Ducal as well as its Dreamworld bed range: all exclusive to members. It is also extending its supplier base to help furniture specialists diversify into new categories such as garden furniture. An often overlooked area is finishing touches so AIS sources accessories and lighting to create inspirational roomset themes that are displayed at its trade shows as ‘key looks’ for members to replicate in their own stores. AIS runs shows for all furniture categories as well as others that feature complementary ranges like housewares and linens. suppliers and are an ideal point of reference for furniture specialists to source additional relevant product to supplement core ranges and improve their customer proposition. In addition to the buying benefits that it leverages through its central payment system, it also generates significant rebates for members and provides other added-value services, particularly the procurement team who save members’ money in areas such as insurance, utilities, services and equipment. It can also help with legislative burdens and its partnership trading team offers guidance on flammability regulation compliance, pricing legislation and consumer law as well as assisting members on technical issues relating to service. An experienced import team provides expert advice on shipping in conjunction with a third party freight specialist and its furniture trading department offers the opportunity to take advantage of AIS bought products from the Far East on a call-off basis. Pooling power
Beevers transformed the signage outside its showroom, while Carpet 1st modular stands (below) allow products to be rebranded
Metro Group offers more than just buying
This year sees the 40th anniversary of the creation of Metro Group. In that time the initial concept of pooling buying power to compete against the national chains has been expanded dramatically and it now also assists its members to sell the best performing products in the marketplace at a profit. What has been developed is a group of independent retailers from the smallest one-man operation to multiple outlet businesses. Retaining independence is important to Metro Group members
66
Interiors Monthly July 2019
who are always given the option to participate in group activities. This allows them to use all of the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own business. Metro Group’s marketing service has a distinct advantage: it is completely bespoke. Metro Group understands that retailers work in differing marketplaces and locations, so having access to a host of marketing resources means members have a wealth of experience and facilities custom made to suit their needs.
The marketing team is able to work on any project from a price card to a complete showroom makeover. One such project this year was for Beevers of Whitby which saw the need to update the outside of its historic premises. The Metro team designed signage including a 10m x 2.4m sign. The uneven walls were prepared and laser cut acrylic lettering applied to a timber background. Additional directional signs completed the job. Another benefit of group membership is the Carpet 1st own-label display. Most retailers understand the benefit of rebranding but so often this can create a mis-match of displays and stands. The Carpet 1st display stands have been designed to be completely modular, with a wall, lectern, corner and staircase unit – allowing the retailer to display whatever products they choose with standard or bespoke graphic panels. All of the POS is designed and created in-house at Metro in its own studio, so it’s easy to change should members wish to. The marketing service is fully mobile and equipped with printers, cutters, tools and access equipment. Backed by a studio in the North-East of England, the team travels the UK working on-site with members on whatever project they need assistance with. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

Freedom of choice
The group organises two shows a year
Membership places no obligations on retailers
Minerva Furniture Group was founded in May 1990 by a small group of independent furniture retailers in the West Country. Minerva members are now located throughout the UK, Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland. Many own the business freehold and are typically family businesses or partnerships. Membership is increasing rapidly and now numbers over 200 outlets. The group’s worldwide supplier base includes many leading furniture brands. Minerva works closely with more than 120 suppliers, sourcing products and negotiating offers for its members. There is no obligation for members to buy from listed group suppliers.
68
Interiors Monthly July 2019
The product offering includes all furniture categories, as well as home decor such as lighting, mirrors and accessories. Minerva also offers a container breakdown service on a selection of exclusive products, enabling members to purchase singles at bulk prices. This especially benefits the smaller independent retailer that cannot take large quantities of stock or buy full containers. Each year the group hosts two exhibitions: the Minerva Furniture & Bed Show in May is a member-only event, while the Autumn Furniture Show is open to all furniture retailers. More than 80 exhibitors at this well-timed October
trade event offer a diverse range of products. Both exhibitions are held at the NAEC, Warwickshire. Minerva offers two levels of retail membership: full membership for furniture and bed retailers and associate membership for specialist bed retailers. A rebate scheme, based on individual turnover, is in operation. Regional membership meetings offer retailers networking opportunities, and a monthly promotional newsletter keeps members aware of any special offers. The group will be at the Manchester Furniture Show and the Bed Show to promote the advantages of membership. Visit: www.minervafurnituregroup.co.uk

Central service
MFA is centrally located off the M1
MFA has weekly furniture auctions In the heart of the Midlands there is much to shout about. Beautiful countryside, great people, first class businesses and lots of interesting places to visit. But perhaps one of the area’s greatest selling points is the location. As a central hub served by many cities and towns, access to the Midlands is easy from most places countrywide. Midland Furniture Auctions has capitalised on this advantage for well over 10 years. Every Wednesday buyers flock from all over to bid on the large range of sofas, beds, chairs, tables, rugs and accessories. And because the saleroom is just off junction 28 of the M1 in Alfreton, Derbyshire, vendors looking to clear unwanted stock can make easy deliveries there too. ‘If you have end of line, seconds, returns, prototypes or excess furniture you need selling, MFA may have the service for you. The team are dedicated to taking the pain out of clearing stock and getting good returns for vendors’ furniture. They also have many pragmatic, bolt-on services to repair or assemble stock, making sure it gets the greatest return achievable. The best hammer prices, the minimum amount of hassle

for clients, and no sale – no fee to pay. There is really nothing to lose by trying the service at next week’s auction,’ says Dean Carpenter, MFA senior auctioneer. ‘Shouting about furniture is what we do best. A lot of our clients simply don’t have time or space to bother with unwanted stock. They want to clear the clutter and be done with it. That’s where we come in. Our vendors are always
surprised by the prices we achieve for them and how efficient we are, which is why we’ve been going so long. The apartments are in Birmingham’s prestigious Exchange Square development
ADP is excited to talk about a great new furniture installation and project management venture it has been working on for LE-AL Asia. The project involved installing and project managing a large scale flat pack and casegood furniture programme – with furniture supplied by Julian Bowen – in Birmingham’s exclusive Exchange Square development, right in the heart of the city centre. The project is split into two phases across 2019, the first of which completed in early May. Altogether, it covers over 600 luxury apartments ranging from studios to three bedroom homes. Working within very tight deadlines and alongside other external companies, ADP successfully delivered a full project management and installation service to complete the first phase on time. The ADP team is courteous, helpful and professional in its approach to its work and offered first-rate, smooth project management which perfectly complemented its efficient installation service. ADP offers over 50 years’ combined specialist experience in an array of other services including distribution, merchandising, store roll-outs, fulfilment and overall project management, with clients from major electrical and computer stores to national and European carpet and flooring companies. BUYING GROUPS
Four decades
Ray Chilton, Metro Group chairman
The Metro Group is celebrating its 40th anniversary
In April 1979, 14 retailers gathered at the Tickled Trout Hotel, Preston to discuss setting up a buying group. ‘The euphoria that flowed from all round the meeting cannot be put on paper, but an indication of which was that the meeting convened at 7pm did not finish until 12am. Also, the fact that every participant was prepared to disclose turnover figures (information not easily forthcoming from retailers) shows the genuine enthusiasm created. We can disclose that at cost these ranged from £150,000 to £600,000 and the total of the 14 retailers was approximately £3,500,000,’ read the minutes. It was decided to send a letter to retailers, part of which read: ‘We have all been aware during recent years of the considerable strength that is to be gained from union. This group wishes to unite certain similar trading organisations to be represented in certain negotiating fields with manufacturers and producers to gain for members of the group discounts over and above those

normally available in the market place; franchise agreements for exclusive ranges of carpets and floorcoverings; strength to oppose restrictive practices and to influence the future of carpet retailing; the mutual support and co-operation that can be offered by fellow-member of an association, and such other
advantages as it may gain, by bargaining from strength.’ To mark the group’s 40th anniversary a gala dinner was held in June, with 170 attendees celebrating the milestone. Ray Chilton, Metro Group chairman, was among those to address the gathering. Visit: www.carpet1st.com

Think Rugs (above left), Rama Carpets (above) and Furlong Flooring (below) are among the flooring companies already committed to JFS 2020
2020 will see a new sector: Flooring at JFS Preparations for the 2020 January Furniture Show are in full swing and big plans are afoot for new, refreshed and enhanced sectors. Birmingham’s NEC has become the familiar home for the whole of the UK furniture industry at the start of the year, and the 2020 event takes place from 19-22 January. ‘Flooring took a little breather this year but comes roaring back in 2020 situated in a new location in a busy hall and will be surrounded by big name upholstery and cabinet brands. Hard and soft flooring specialists will feature in the new Flooring at JFS sector and will be joined by popular rug companies who are regular favourites at the show,’ says Cleere Scamell, JFS event director. Brands including Furlong Flooring, Rama Carpets and Think Rugs are already on the exhibitor list for 2020 with lots of new names already in the pipeline to be revealed in the coming months, he says. As many retailers continue to increase their product offering, the organisers of JFS recognise the importance of giving buyers every opportunity to maximise their time away from their stores by making JFS a one-stop shop for the whole room. More than 500 furniture, flooring,

lighting and accessories companies will show their new collections to over 21,000 visitors, with major UK and International brands exhibiting alongside new and developing ones. ‘Flooring will be back at JFS with a bang in 2020. Visitor feedback is critical to planning each of our shows and the feedback from this year clearly said “more flooring please.” Our raison-d’etre is to produce the UK’s best furniture and interiors shows. JFS and its sister show
Manchester Furniture Show, are all about delivering the brands and the products buyers want to see. Our buyers have requested extensive flooring choices at JFS – and they won’t be disappointed.’ A refreshed flooring sector won’t be the only new development for JFS 2020, with moves afoot to extend and improve the variety of the product selection for every price point and every kind of domestic and commercial leisure space. Record maker 2019 will be the 57th edition of The Flooring Show Customer appeal, colour and texture, performance and getting the fit right first time – you’ll find information on all these points and much more at this year’s The Flooring Show, which takes place from 15-17 September in Harrogate. 2019 marks the show’s 57th edition, a record performance for a UK trade exhibition, and a not-to-be-missed event for any retailer or supplier in the flooring sector. This is where the industry’s leading brands and suppliers from the UK and beyond turn out to support the three-day show, using the occasion to showcase new ranges across all types of flooring including carpet, laminate, LVT, wood and vinyl, plus cork and grass, for both the retail and contract markets. With more than 50 exhibitors new to the show for 2019 or returning after a short break having already signed up, visitors should allow enough time to meet some new faces and review their ranges and flooring offers. Visitors should look out for Abingdon Flooring, a2zrug, Cormar Carpets, Carpetfitters.com, Fells Carpets, Kellars Limited, Lifestyle Floors, Green & Brown, Ultimate Display, Oriental Weavers, Mastercraft Rugs and Visualmine, to name a few. Brand matters
Whitemeadow is looking to boost its branded ranges
2019 got off to a big and busy start for Whitemeadow. It kicked off the year with its best-ever performance at the January Furniture Show, followed by a very successful return to Long Point. Add to this a new collaboration with The Branded Furniture Company – Whitemeadow is the chosen manufacturer for the Orla Kiely Upholstery range – and increasing the Content by Terence Conran range, and it’s easy to see why Whitemeadow has high hopes for the future. ‘We’ve got a lot of big new projects we’re working on this year, which are all very exciting and challenging at the same time,’ says Paul Wesson, Whitemeadow sales director. The branded furniture market is one area that Whitemeadow is looking to develop further this year. A new Content
by Terence Conran northern showroom was opened in April at Whitemeadow’s Sutton In Ashfield site, and The Branded Furniture Company has chosen the Whitemeadow Orchard Way site as the home of the Orla Kiely Upholstery showroom. ‘Whilst continuing to focus on engaging with our current customers and developing our wide range of existing products, we are also working hard on cracking new markets. We know that to maintain our position as one of the leaders in the UK upholstery industry, we need to continually invest resources in bringing the best products to market ahead of our competition,’ says Wesson. Deciding what products to show at the Manchester Furniture Show has been no easy task. Whitemeadow will be showcasing a range of house upholstery,

beds, sofa beds and occasional pieces, plus a selection of Orla Kiely Upholstery and Content by Terence Conran models. Alongside new product launches, it will also be presenting bestselling ranges in new fabric stories. The design and development team has been busy visiting shows throughout Europe to source new fabrics and incorporate the latest trends, allowing it to offer customers styles that are specifically suited to their market and budget. ‘We love coming to the Manchester Furniture Show as it provides us with a vital mid-year touchpoint with our customers, and our offering just keeps getting bigger and better each year so it’s definitely a firm favourite on our calendar,’ says Daniel Oscroft, Whitemeadow head of group sales. Brand power
Trent
La-Z-Boy UK will have its largest MFS stand On the back of a hugely successful January Furniture Show, where La-Z-Boy UK capitalised on some of its bestselling collections, the recliner brand is set to unveil its largest ever Manchester stand. It can be a tricky task for a well-known brand to evolve with changing trends – both in terms of cosmetics, the way a product looks, as well as how consumers like to shop, not to mention what motivates them to spend their hard earned money. Evolving its product lines and routes to market is something La-Z-Boy UK is intent on making a priority, and flirting with new directions at trade events to gain feedback from buyers is proving a successful tactic. ‘Introducing new products and reinvigorating our key ranges is what gives La-Z-Boy UK life and energy. But there can be a fine line between moving on to stay ahead of the game
Interiors Monthly July 2019
and moving away from consumers’ expectations of the brand. It’s vital to get the balance right,’ says Mark Draper, La-Z-Boy UK marketing director.
‘We like to get first-hand feedback from our retailers and potential stockists when we introduce any new products so we can ensure consumers will be

comfortable with the fit within the La-Z-Boy family. We can then refine and revise products if necessary, following these face to face chats. ‘This is one of the main benefits for us of exhibiting and is why we’ve invested in our largest ever Manchester Furniture Show stand. It’s so important for us to meet and engage with our stockists and get to know them: understanding what they want and what their customers want from La-Z-Boy.’ More than 15 new introductions will be shown, giving buyers plenty of food for thought. ‘We’ll have 11 upholstery groups on the stand, all of which are available as power or manual recliners, as well as static products,’ says Draper. ‘Buyers will notice a distinct theme across all our new products, which
Rogue
convey a contemporary edge with detailing that’s not normally associated with the La-Z-Boy range.’ In addition to the new suites, from the Comfort Studio and Urban Attitudes collections, La-Z-Boy will unveil its refreshed pedestal chair collection. These swivel chairs are a versatile, affordable option for customers looking for branded luxury for a range of areas of the home. And, for the first time, a sofa bed will be introduced to the La-Z-Boy UK product range, offering an additional sales opportunity and a route to introduce the brand. Continuing the innovation, new storage footstools that double as guest seats are set to prove popular. With minimal effort, the cushioned stools provide a nifty extra seat for visitors, an option for customers with living rooms
where space is at a premium. ‘Our 2019 Manchester Furniture Show stand is intended to offer more choice than ever before to our buyers, while capitalising on our brand power and the popularity of our bestselling collections. ‘Everything on the stand will be recognisable as La-Z-Boy, providing the comfort of brand familiarity, but with a twist that offers something new – whether that’s an updated arm design or a new product entirely. ‘Our aim is to fill the gaps so that consumers can choose La-Z-Boy products for all their living room needs. In turn, this will not only attract new customers to the brand but will encourage repeat custom or increased sales from those who are already brand loyal,’ says Draper. Visit: www.la-z-boy.co.uk

SHOW GUIDE
Dream ticket The emphasis will be on UK-made upholstery Sweet Dreams will return to the show with an emphasis on its UK-made upholstery. Among several new sofas will be Blenheim, available as a 3-2-1, and Knole, available in scatterback and standard models. After the success of its sofabeds at JFS, a fifth model Sunset will be debuted. The two-seater model has an easy, pullout action. Its collection of imported
Knole scatterback
recliners will also be expanded. Compliance is a critical factor in manufacturing goods for the British marketplace and Sweet Dreams has established its own testing centre. The Scholefield Technology Centre is a state-of-the-art product testing hub at its Scholefield Mill in Nelson, just a mile or so away from its head office. It houses seven machines, including

two testing for mattress durability and sofa fatigue, a crock meter, a Martindale abrasion machine and a flammability testing area. Staffed by a compliance manager and technician, the centre is a member of SATRA, and Sweet Dreams anticipates gaining UKAS accreditation later in the year. Visit: www.sweetdreamsuk.com

SHOW GUIDE
Moving on up Protect-A-Bed has seen sales rise ‘To build success, take focus, achieve hard work and drive. These are qualities we have continuingly demonstrated in our success in helping retail partners significantly grow sales,’ says Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo. Protect-A-Bed has seen sales rise at the mid-point of 2019. ‘We are specialists in the mattress protection category. Nobody else in the category has the same passion, drive and focus to grow sales and that’s why Protect-A-Bed is the leading global
brand in healthy sleep. ‘We continuously build frameworks that are simple for retailers to implement in order to achieve extremely high attachment rates. Focus is key: lots of small improvements often lead to significant improvement in performance once compounded. Therefore, we know we can instantly increase sales within this category,’ says Zamet. ‘In a year where volume of customers has declined, it has never been more important to focus on each customer who walks through the shop door,’ says Paul Lake, Protect-A-Bed national sales manager. ‘We know we can help any store reach a 50% attachment rate or higher. As a business we are constantly looking to help drive sales for all of our retail partners. But specialist training is vital to unlock the sales potential and our team are incredibly adaptive to support this in any retail environment. ‘We support it through a bespoke reward system through the Protect-ABed Platinum Club. Since we launched the Platinum Club, the results have been excellent. Both existing and new partners have joined and are already benefiting from the focused approach to growing sales.’ ‘The Platinum Club has been designed to build, recognise and reward success with unique promotional and discount opportunities, sponsored incentives and tailored POS solutions as well as membership rewards,’ adds Zamet. ‘We have developed a world-class programme honed over years of experience and built on a singular focus. This includes a unique sales training and motivational programme, our best-in-class mattress protection collection and bundled guarantees, new state-of-the-art display bays, awardwinning customer service and claims resolution, and a next-day delivery service where required.’ Visit: www.protectabed.co.uk

Stop the scratches
Stroolmount offers a variety of protection products
Stroolmount has been helping to protect flooring and furniture for over a decade How do your protect your investment and prevent thousands of pounds in insurance claims when things go wrong? That’s the dilemma faced by retailers, manufacturers, architects, designers, hotel refurbishers, shopfitters and the hospitality trade. Stroolmount offers cost-effective solutions from as little as 1p. The familyrun specialist company has been helping to protect flooring and furniture for more than a decade. ‘It makes sense to spend a few pence protecting flooring and furniture and creating genuine customer goodwill. We’ve saved companies thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims, not to mention hikes in their premiums for next time,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘To me it’s a no-brainer. Putting furniture on a floor without protection is like leaving out a lottery card: sooner or later it’s going to get scratched.’ Stroolmount has an updated website
Interiors Monthly July 2019
reflecting its new Protect and Care product range, packaging and POS displays. ‘The heart symbolises our passionate commitment to providing superior products to keep flooring and furniture looking their best: our 5mm felt is thicker and has a stronger adhesive than most.’ Caring means going out of their way to solve customers’ problems. When people struggled to clean around heavyweight recliners, Stroolmount developed special Furni-Glide glides that easily slide recliners across carpet. When a hotel’s cleaners couldn’t move the heavy bedside cabinets, the hotel asked Stroolmount for help. ‘We developed height-adjustable glides allowing them both to move the furniture easily and to protect the uneven floor,’ says Finch. Stroolmount’s specialist solutions help the trade as well as helping customers when cleaning, decorating or rearranging rooms. Its self-adhesive felt cushions the impact
between furniture and flooring to prevent scratching. Its Quickclick glides, Furni-Glides and Move It pads mean heavy furniture moves smoothly across hard floors and carpets without fibre friction or flawing the joints as they lurch to one side. Visit: www.stroolmount.co.uk

SHOW GUIDE Royal Coil Supreme mattress
Choices
Motion Collection’s Paige corner option
Customisation offers 1,000s of options
Through its concepts of Your Sofa Your Way, Motion and Designer sofas, combined with space-saving carpet displays and mattress POS areas, TCS Imports wants to ensure independent retailers make the best of every square foot of their showrooms. TCS has increased the stock levels of its best performing models whilst reducing its overall stocked models. Having greater stock of popular products is something retailers welcomed, according to the company. The updated Motion Collection brings together top selling models with added features to allow customisation of each sofa specifically for consumers’ needs.
Available in semi-aniline Italian leather, or in cost-saving leather gel or soft touch British designed fabrics, each model comes as three, two or single seaters, with manual or electric recliners, extension pieces, cinema extensions, corner units and end pieces. TCS has added to its British-made Designer Collection of fabric upholstery with a vast array of options for individual models. Combined with the fabric selections, retailers will have the ability of offering thousands of options from a single floor model. The Royal Coil mattress collection has been further expanded with the introduction of Natural Sleep, which sees

further additions to the range with the Superb and Supreme mattresses. The price range has also been widened with the introduction of the Contemporary Sleep mattresses. Also on show will be the company’s recently introduced velvet fabric, leather-look high back and solid wood dining chairs. TCS will show its updated carpet collection, with 18 ranges on display, each available in up to 12 colours and with new space-saving stands, lecterns and swatches, all designed specifically for independent retailers. Retailers can order by rolls or cut lengths. Visit: www.tcsimports.com

These allow the upholstery to hug the frame tightly, swaddling the structure of the angular seat as well as providing an unexpected visual contrast.
