EDITOR’S COMMENT
Raising awareness of the FMC’s welfare support is to be applauded, but is also somewhat overdue Dids Macdonald, the newly installed Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company is to be heartily congratulated for her choice of her Master’s Challenge for her year in office: raising awareness of the charity’s welfare support. FMC has been supporting industry workers, past and present, since 1903. Today it continues to provide financial assistance to workers within the industry through grants that can go towards essential household items or bills, funeral expenses, property repairs, disability and medical equipment, respite or convalescent breaks, general financial hardship or pre-tenancy costs and removal costs. The only problem was that over the past few years it had rather forgotten to promote the fact that its welfare support was still happening. As Macdonald says: ‘The hard fact of the matter is that the majority of people in the industry don’t even know our help exists. We want to help every single eligible family, but we need your help to make sure our welfare support is no longer the best kept secret in the industry.’ So sign up for the One Step at a Time campaign and become the champions Macdonald is looking for. And if you need the charity’s support, you don’t have to be retired (or a FMC member) – just to have worked in the industry for two years. At the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show last month there was a mood of not exactly optimism but more contentment that the flooring sector seems to be at least holding its own when it comes to consumer spending. As you can see later on in the issue there were many exhibitors that are making major investments in new ranges and new product development. Thanks to the many of you who have already voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2019. For those of you have yet to do so, the deadline is 28 June. Do tell us who your winners are: it’s your votes that decide.

NEWS
Victoria vows to deliver on margins as it secures refinancing Flooring group Victoria has told shareholders that it will deliver the promised improvement in margins. ‘Current trading is consistent with our previous trading update of 18 February 2019, and the group’s performance for the financial year ended 30 March 2019 is expected to meet consensus market expectations,’ it says. ‘The strategy adopted last financial year to drive top line growth is continuing to deliver in the current calendar year, with like-for-like revenue gains across the group continuing to be plus 3%. Management remain confident that this growth is sustainable for the foreseeable future. ‘Importantly, the various management actions to continue to grow operating margins, which were set out in some detail in the February market announcement, have been completed as scheduled and are having the positive impact expected. As a consequence, it is expected that the group’s margin increase of over 100bps in the 2019 financial year will be compounded by a further circa 100bps increase in the 2020 financial year. ‘Having secured new long-term debt financing in April 2019, the group is well-placed to continue to create wealth for shareholders from organic and acquisition-led growth.’ ‘Shareholders can be confident margins are steadily improving alongside continued market share growth,’ says
Philippe Hamers, Victoria group chief executive. The refinancing saw the group secure long-term funding for five years to 2024 to replace its existing €445m facility. The commitment has been provided by Credit Suisse, working alongside the group's existing banks, which continue to provide funding to the business. In November the group abandoned plans to refinance its borrowings with a €450m bond. One of Victoria’s major shareholders has become a non-executive director of the group. Zack Sternberg is co-founder of The Spruce House Partnership, a private investment partnership based in New York and 14.8% shareholder of Victoria. ‘Under the leadership of Geoff [Wilding, executive chairman] and the executive team, Victoria has built on its over 100-year legacy to become one of the largest and fastest growing flooring businesses in Europe. Geoff's record of growing cash flow per share over 40% annually since becoming chairman is truly remarkable. ‘Spruce House looks forward to continuing to support Victoria over the long-term as it takes advantage of the extraordinary opportunity to grow its existing operations and acquire companies across Europe’s very fragmented flooring industry,’ he says.
Trio share DGM Jonathan Hindle Prize Catherine Aitken, Nathan Philipott and Jemma Ooi have shared this year’s Jonathan Hindle Prize, selected from the 2019 Design Guild Mark recipients. Aitken designed the Ori Guest Bed, manufactured by Another Country; Philipott and Ooi designed the Igneous wallpaper for Custhom. Mark Gabbertas was highly commended for his William lounge chair and ottoman for Allermuir, and Lucy Kurrein for her panel for Capdell. The winners receive £1,000 and a trophy. ‘The judges voted to award the Ori
Guest Bed the Jonathan Hindle Prize as the best of the Design Guild Mark Furniture awardees, in a very strong field. They were taken by the simplicity and versatility of the design, but especially impressed that the holistic design process had eliminated environmental impact,’ says Rodney McMahon, DGM chairman. ‘The Igneous collection (pictured) shares the prize as the best of the Design Guild Mark 2D awardees. The beauty of the product was an immediate standout and by bringing together intriguing
processes, using recycled materials, thereby creating unique non-repetitive patterns using a handmade technique, in Britain, was very impressive.’ See pages 26-29 for this year’s Design Guild Mark recipients.
Timorous Beasties opens retail store Timorous Beasties has launched its retail showroom, in Islington, London. FMC highlights welfare support in new campaign The Furniture Makers’ Company has launched a campaign, One Step at a Time, challenging companies in the furnishing sector to raise awareness of the charity’s welfare support. The campaign asks companies to sign up as One Step Champions and commit to communicating the charity’s welfare provision among their employees. The Furniture Makers’ Company has been supporting industry workers, past and present, since 1903. Today it continues to provide financial assistance to workers within the industry through grants that can go towards essential household items or bills, funeral expenses, property repairs, disabled and medical equipment, respite or convalescent breaks, general financial hardship or pre-tenancy costs and removal costs. ‘One Step at a Time isn’t about reinventing the wheel: it’s about reminding individuals and businesses that for more than a century The Furniture Makers’ Company has cared for the people who work and who have worked in the industry. I hope that the campaign will gather momentum year on year so that everyone in the industry will know about our welfare support, which is there for anything life throws at you, from a minor bump in the road to a major crisis,’ says Dids Macdonald, FMC Master who has made the initiative her Master’s Challenge for her year in office. ‘The hard fact of the matter is that the majority of people in the industry don’t even know our help exists. We want to help every single eligible family, but we need your help to make sure our welfare support is no longer the best kept secret in the industry.’ On signing up, One Step Champions will be given materials to help promote the message, including a certificate of involvement, posters, flyers, case studies and social media content, and be kept up to date with news on how The Furniture Makers’ Company can support their employees. At the ceremony last month when Macdonad was installed
Conran was presented the award by the Lord Mayor of London Alderman Peter Estlin at the Mansion House in the City of London during the installation dinner of the Company’s new Master Dids Macdonald
Sir Terence Conran was given a lifetime achievement award, in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the sector. ‘In my heart I have always considered myself a furniture maker. It has given me more pleasure than anything else during my rather long career. As a young boy I remember the absolute joy of finally finishing making my very own bookcase and it has been in my bloodstream ever since. So it was truly thrilling to be recognised by The Furniture Makers’ Company and to enjoy a very special evening with fellow craftspeople who share my love of making furniture. ‘One of my big fears is that as a nation we often appear to have lost the joy of making things so it was uplifting to be surrounded by passionate furniture makers and see that the talent in our industry burns as brightly as ever,’ says Conran.
Recycling scheme raises £1.45m a year for charity Harveys and Bensons for Beds’s furniture recycling scheme has raised £8.7m for the British Heart Foundation. Having first started working with the charity six years ago, both Harveys and Bensons for Beds offer a free service to customers which allows them to donate unwanted reusable furniture to the BHF when they purchase new furniture, which is then sold in the charity’s stores. ‘Our continued partnership with Harveys and Bensons for Beds has been vital in helping us raise money to fund essential research. It has also provided our stores with much needed stock, especially bedroom furniture which we find is not donated as much as other furniture types,’ says Karen O’Donoghue, British Heart Foundation head of retail partnerships.

YOUR 2019 SUCCESS STRATEGY 5 ESSENTIAL WAYS TO MAXIMISE YOUR SALES AND PROFIT • ADVERTISING – Most advertising does not work very
well. If yours isn’t, stop wasting your money now. Don’t blame the media, blame the message. Re-design your advertising in a benefits-orientated-style. Call Greenwood for effective copywriting know-how.
• PRODUCTS – Be ruthless with your precious floor space.
If a product or collection isn’t performing after being given a fair trial, then clear it and replace it with a faster selling line. Test and measure the selling potential of all your products in a Greenwood Sale.
• SELLING SKILLS - Get good at selling. Most retailers
don’t employ a proper retail sales process for big ticket goods. The most successful ones do. Invest time and money in quality sales know-how. Call Greenwood to arrange an effective sales training course for your team.
• COMPETITION – Check your competition to find out what they are offering. Avoid all-out price wars. Out-perform your competition on the most relevant beneficial points including choice, quality, value and service. Call Greenwood to mystery shop your competitors.
• PROMOTION – Promote your business effectively.
Every good retailer from Aldi to Harrod’s does. Consider using a ‘Greenwood’ sales promotion to increase sales, turn stock into cash and win future market share, while protecting your profit at the same time. Call Greenwood!

Scandinavian homewares chain JYSK is to concentrate on the north and centre of the UK as it aims to open more than 50 stores by 2024. The retailer wants to grow from 16 stores to 52 by August 2024. JYSK will open branches in St Helens and Bradford this month. David Ashton, JYSK country manager has previously said the chain was looking to increase store numbers by 30% a year and would open at least five more this financial year. ‘We must grow intelligently, maximising each region of the UK, to create and develop localised brand awareness and customer recognition. This is why our primary focus remains in central and northern UK regions. ‘Our experience is that striking the right note with shoppers is the key to a retail business that thrives. We would argue that UK retail isn’t dying, it’s simply changing

Dreams rolls out Sleepmatch Dreams is to roll-out its Sleepmatch mattress matching technology to all of its 195 stores, seven months after first introducing it. The system analyses 18 measurements, including height, weight, shoulder width and preferred sleeping position and conducts 1,000 calculations, to pair customers with their perfect mattress. While lying on the Sleep Match mattress, the technology will capture key profile measurements before producing a Personal Sleep Profile, detailing their unique mattress requirements. Globally the technology has already resulted in over 12 million profiles being built within the database. ‘Too many people in the UK currently suffer from a poor night’s sleep – and a bad mattress can be the main culprit.

Sleepmatch was trialled for seven months
Yet we know the process of picking a new mattress can be sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing. We don’t think it should be that way,’ says Daniel Parsons, Dreams buying director. ‘That’s why we’re so proud of our Sleepmatch technology: the only system backed by science and specifically designed to make choosing the right mattress easier than ever. ‘This nationwide rollout is a significant step towards helping more people to get a better night’s sleep.’
Carpetright has opened its first concession within a Furniture Village store. The chain has opened the concession at the furniture retailer’s Guildford store. ‘It has been great working with the Furniture Village team in getting this brand new concession up and running, and we are thrilled to be opening our first concession with them,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive. ‘As one of the UK’s largest general furniture retailers already servicing most rooms in the home, it makes good sense that we should explore ways of extending our product offering,’ says Peter Harrison, Furniture Village chief executive. Carpetright’s concession relationship with Homebase recently ended. The diy chain now has seven Tapi concessions.
Government gives green light to Ikea plan Plans to build another branch of Ikea on the south coast have taken a step forward with the Government deciding not to call in the planning application. In October, Adur District Council’s planning committee voted in favour of developing

Score draw Each customer only sees their own situation Mrs T welcomes me into her home and introduces me to her husband. She asks if I’d like her to show me what she’s unhappy with about her flooring. She shows me some water damage in front of her washing machine and some chipping and raised joints in the main area of her kitchen. Mrs T doesn’t know how my day has gone so far. I won’t be sharing her issues with anyone, apart from the manufacturer who has asked me to visit her, and I can’t share anyone else’s with her. My first call had been to a customer who had complained that her vinyl flooring was getting scratched. It was only in the area around the dining table, but the customer had put felt pads on her chairs so they couldn’t have caused the damage. Besides, the scratches seemed to be in batches of four identically shaped lines exactly the spacing of the claws of the dog I made a fuss of when I arrived and whose bed was just beside the table. Retailer 1, Customer 0. Half an hour later I was looking at a recliner sofa. The three back cushions
were not evenly spaced and the mechanisms on the two end seats did not operate freely. It was a small flat and the access wasn’t ideal, so I asked about the delivery. ‘They took the backs off,’ said the customer. I did the same and checked the brackets of the mechanisms. They were bent. They were also ideally positioned to be used as grab handles when carrying the sofa base into the home. 1-1. On I drove until I reached customer number three. The joints of his wood flooring were uneven and he’d had difficulty getting them to fit together. He’d managed it, but the raised edges were getting damaged. He found me some offcuts and I turned them face down. The backs were three different shades and there were three different batch numbers. We looked again at the floor and found there were also three different levels of sheen – each batch of flooring had its uniqueness. 1-2. It was obvious to me that Mrs T was going to even up the score. Joint damage on laminate flooring happens when it can’t expand when temperature and

humidity increase. It has to be fitted as a floating floor, like many other types of flooring, and if this is not done, failure occurs pretty quickly. This flooring had, apparently, been installed by a relative who was a professional installer and had ‘never had a problem with any of his jobs’. I removed a section of plinth from the island in the kitchen. Then another from the units along the wall. All the kitchen units were fitted on top of the flooring, preventing any movement and causing the damage that was evident. Mrs T noticed what I was looking at. ‘Don’t try and tell me it’s a fitting fault! You’ve just come to try and find a way to blame us or the fitter,’ she said. I didn’t tell her anything, but my report will probably confirm her conspiracy theory. No matter how fair and consistent you are, each customer only sees their own situation. 2-2 on the day, but to Mrs T an unacceptable result. De Padova has opened its fourth flagship store
De Padova has opened its first UK showroom, in Chelsea. The 3,336sqft Draycott Avenue store occupies the first floor of a modern four-storey building re-designed by British architect David Chipperfield in the ‘Brompton Cross’ area where Knightsbridge, Chelsea and South Kensington meet and which is home to many upmarket clothing and interiors stores and restaurants. The new store is styled as a penthouse-style
contemporary living space with large windows and white walls. It is the Italian company’s fourth company owned stand-alone showroom. ‘We have found an extraordinary space for De Padova in the heart of Chelsea. A far cry from the traditional furniture shop, it is an exceptional loft space that fully showcases our complete interior design offering. The showroom’s close proximity to Boffi Chelsea enables us to

The 2D judges were: Linzi Coppick, Forme UK Design and Architecture design director; Daniel Hopwood, Daniel Hopwood: London Interior Design & Architecture director; Clare Johnston, Royal College of Art emeritus professor of textiles; Natasha Marshall, Natasha Marshall founder; Corinne Pringle, tp Bennett director and Peter Thwaites, Rapture and Wright design director. The awarding of these Marks increases the number to 233. ‘The shortlist for the 2019 Design Guild Mark provided a diverse approach to materials, process and form. Creativity
was consistent throughout and it was inspiring to hear from the designers directly. There were several clear winners and those that warranted healthy debate amongst the judges to gain consensus. Such is the strength of the Design Guild Mark: to ensure a wealth of design excellence is recognised,’ says Alderson. ‘The Design Guild Mark remains the gold standard in design excellence for manufactured furniture. This year the accent was on simplicity, authenticity, finesse and fitness for purpose,’ says Myerson. ‘Celebrating and awarding British design talent is a pleasure but made DAVID BROOK
Now in its eleventh year, the Design Guild Mark recognises the highest standards in the design of furnishings in volume production by designers working in Britain, or British designers working abroad. It is awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, in order to drive excellence and raise the profile of British design and innovation. ‘The variety and quality of designs applying for the Design Guild Mark always makes for an interesting judging day and this year we were pleased to meet many new designers and companies willing to put themselves forward. The insights of our judges, and the challenging questions they pose, ensure that the award of a Design Guild Mark is something to which to aspire,’ says Rodney McMahon, Design Guild Mark chairman. The furniture judges were; Simon Alderson, twentytwentyone co-founder; Helen Berresford, RIBA head of ID:SR; Joanna Biggs, GA Design director; Elliott Koehler, Layer Design designer; Jeremy Myerson, Royal College of Art professor of design; Tom Pearce, Farrah & Pearce co-founder; Campbell Thompson, The Conran Shop head of furniture and lighting and Terence

From the use of sustainable organic materials to carefully sourced non-toxic wood glues – it’s an inspiring time for change and fascinating to see a more ecological approach to furniture design,’ says Pearce. ‘We all know that lovely quote from William Morris: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” In the light of this modern age may I add “…and definitely sustainable” as all of the products that have been awarded the

In all cases, the judges would rather be guided through the failures and triumphs of the journey by those that wrung a solution from adversity, than presented with a finished product by those employed to sell it. ‘As with last year’s awards, the entries that impressed us most were those that managed to combine innovation and original thinking with an environmental and ethical consideration. Best medicine
Alcohol affects the quality of your sleep, even if you drop off quickly
Sealy has a new campaign on the importance of sleep
Sealy UK has launched a campaign to tackle the UK’s poor sleep health, after research revealed that people across the country now wake up feeling tired four days every week. The campaign, Sleep is the Best Medicine, has been launched in partnership with TV personality Dr Sarah Jarvis. It comes after research by the bed manufacturer found that 84% of people have felt more susceptible to illness because of their lack of sleep, with depression, migraines and flu topping the list of illnesses that are being caused by sleeplessness. As part of the campaign, Sealy has launched a Healthy Sleep Hub on its website, which has advice and tips from the GP on how to have a more healthy and restful night’s sleep and an online quiz that rates how healthy your sleep habits really are. Jarvis has also been answering the UK’s most pressing sleep questions as part of a video Q&A series launched

across Sealy’s social media channels ‘Poor sleep can have a huge knock-on effect on mood, wellbeing, concentration and even your physical health. There is really good evidence that electronic devices can affect your sleep, while caffeine makes you more alert and alcohol affects the quality of your sleep, even if you drop off quickly. ‘Having a quiet sleeping environment with a comfortable mattress and no ticking clocks, beeping mobiles or glowing lights can make a huge difference to your sleep hygiene,’ she says. ‘Sleep is a hugely important part of living a healthy lifestyle, but it can often get overlooked when it comes to understanding our physical and mental health and why we might not be feeling 100%,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy UK marketing director. ‘It’s shocking that we’re now living in a world where waking up tired over half of the time is considered normal. It’s clear that more needs to be done to tackle
what could become a serious public health issue in coming years. Modern life can be hectic, especially Dr Sarah Jarvis when trying to balance a busy working day with family life, but it’s vital people start prioritising getting good quality sleep in order to live the healthiest, happiest life they can.’ Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

The World’s No.1 bed brand... handmade in Cumbria. Sealy beds are handmade in the heart of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. When you create something in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a constant reminder that you want things to stay that way. At Sealy, we have been making positive steps to prevent any waste material produced within our organisation going to landfill over the past decade. Ten years ago only 15% of the waste produced in the production of our beds was either recycled or sent to energy recovery. Today, we are Zero to Landfill from our site here in Aspatria. We hope with that knowledge you’ll sleep a little easier.

pain points in the buying process, and at the event Sleepeezee presented its solutions to overcoming these issues and common barriers which are felt by many customers during the purchase journey. The research found that customers are often confused by technical jargon, but the three most important decision factors for a bed purchase were price, size and comfort level. Sleepeezee’s new website puts these decision factors at the forefront of the platform, allowing customers to filter their options based on personal criteria. Additionally, the website supports and drives footfall to stockists by helping
customers to find their nearest retailer stocking the bed they have selected. Once shoppers have selected the mattress, storage options and headboard they can download an image of their preferences. Sleepeezee also presented its new brand campaign ‘Everything is easy when you Sleepeezee’, promoting the positive impact of a good night’s sleep and the influence this has on our overall health and wellbeing, in particular the next day. Singh told those attending about the importance of sleep, gave his top tips to ensure a soothing night’s rest and discussed sleeping issues. Visit: www.sleepeezee.com
Sleepeezee has introduced a new brand strategy
Sleepeezee invited a number of its retailers and partners to an event at London’s Ham Yard Hotel to present its new brand strategy and website last month. It also launched its Perfectly British Collection of mattresses – each of which is made using materials sourced from around the UK – and introduced its partnership with its new brand ambassador, TV personality, author and NHS practitioner Dr Ranj Singh, who has previously worked at the Sleepeezee factory in Kent. The company recently completed an extensive consumer research project into how the British public shop for beds. The findings identified a number of common

Last year’s gala dinner; live entertainment has been added for the anniversary celebrations
This year will mark the tenth Bed Show The National Bed Federation’s Bed Show will mark its first decade at its annual gala dinner and award ceremony on 17 September, to take place at the Telford International Centre. Having received a rapturous reception as host of the gala dinner in 2012, 2013 and 2015, Gyles Brandreth is no stranger to the bed industry and will once again be welcoming and entertaining guests at the evening event. For the first time there will be live entertainment at the dinner. Flash is the ‘world’s most authentic live Queen tribute act’ and will be performing a medlay of hits with replica equipment and costumes. ‘We wanted to make our tenth gala dinner and award ceremony a memorable occasion and a chance to thank all of those who have supported us over the last decade,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘Bringing back Gyles

Brandreth was a no-brainer – he has been one of our best-loved hosts. We also wanted to add a bit more pizazz to the evening and are introducing some live entertainment that we hope will go down a storm. We look forward to celebrating 10 years with the industry.’ The evening begins with a drinks reception in the foyer from 7.15pm. This
is followed by a three-course sit-down dinner and coffee in the Ludlow Suite plus the results of the annual Bed Industry Awards. Tickets for the event, which includes fundraising for the industry charity The Furniture Makers’ Company, are now available to book online. Visit: www.bedshow.co.uk

Luxuriance
Flooring One debuted its 2019 collection at BGNFS
Flooring One’s members’ area allowed retailers to give instant feedback on new products and initiatives at the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show. These included Alfresco, the first broadloom carpet range from Flooring One that can be installed indoors or outside. ‘Manufactured from waterproof and bleach-cleanable polypropylene yarn, Alfresco takes the flat weave texture of natural fibres such as sisal and sea grass for a look that is incredibly organic,’ says Peter Karra, Flooring One buyer. For an affordable modern look members saw a new cut-pile print range Moderniso that has three designs made from 100% polyamide yarn. ‘Moderniso is a unique product into the group collection,’ says Karra. ‘For opulence and luxury, Luxuriance is an exceptionally super-soft saxony carpet that you can really sink your toes into and is perfect for busy homes. ‘Looking for colour? Velvet Wish is a new 100% polypropylene carpet that comes in 13 colours including opulent choices such as navy blue and cardinal red. Tufted on a 1/10th gauge machine

using two-ply yarn, Velvet Wish gives the consumer the look and feel of a fine wool velvet carpet but not at the price associated with these luxury carpets, and benefits from a lifetime stain warranty.’ Following the successful launch at the 2018 show, Flooring One introduced a further five patterned Wilton ranges with two entry-level products, two modern patterned carpets with an emphasis on denim blue, and a high quality tartan design. The show saw the group showcase seven rug suppliers with more than 100 options on display, which proved popular with members and covered modern, plain and traditional designs. ‘Our members also benefitted from the new Visual Mine technology being demonstrated: a visual aid system helping consumers create their own room setting with a selection of preprogrammed flooring options. Members also had the opportunity to preview The Woven Edge, which supplies high quality bespoke rugs for retailers to sell in store through an online portal,’ adds Karra. Visit: www.flooringone.co.uk

It also has a number of specialist divisions in flooring (Flooring One), toys (plaY-room) and sports (Intersport). AIS is more than just a buying group. brands to give a point of competitive difference and improve margins. This is particularly strong in furniture with exclusive models and ranges from leading brands and suppliers in upholstery, cabinet, beds and bedroom furniture. It also owns heritage brands Stag and Ducal as well as its Dreamworld bed range: all exclusive to members. AIS is also extending its supplier base to help furniture specialists diversify into new categories such as garden furniture. An often overlooked area is finishing touches so it sources accessories and lighting to create inspirational roomset themes that are displayed at its trade shows as ‘key looks’ for members to replicate in their own stores. AIS runs shows for all furniture categories as well as others that feature complementary ranges such as housewares and linens. These attract leading suppliers and are an ideal point of reference for furniture specialists to source additional relevant product to improve their customer proposition. In addition to the buying benefits
leveraged through its central payment system, it also generates significant rebates for members and provides other added-value services particularly via the procurement team, who save members money in areas such as insurance, utilities, services and equipment. It can help with legislative burdens and its partnership trading team offers guidance on flammability regulation compliance, pricing legislation and consumer law as well as assisting members on technical service issues. An experienced import team provides expert advice on shipping in conjunction with a third-party freight specialist, and its furniture trading department offers members the opportunity to take advantage of AIS bought products from the Far East on a call-off basis. AIS is a broad-ranging organisation with unique experience of supporting the independent retailer and it welcomes approaches from interested, independent, quality retailers and from prospective suppliers who wish to find out more. Minerva members are located throughout the UK, Republic of Ireland and Channel Islands. Many own the business freehold and are typically family businesses or partnerships. The group’s worldwide supplier base includes many leading furniture brands. of suppliers offer Minerva exclusive products and promotional offers. Minerva also collates container orders on a selection of exclusive products, enabling members to purchase singles at bulk prices. This especially benefits the smaller independent which cannot take large quantities of stock or buy full containers. Each year the group hosts two exhibitions: the Minerva Furniture & Bed Show in May is a member-only event while The Autumn Furniture Show is open to all furniture retailers. More than 90 exhibitors offer a diverse range of product. The venue is NAEC, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Minerva offers two levels of membership: full for furniture and bed retailers and associate for specialist bed
retailers. A rebate scheme based on turnover is in operation. Importantly, members control their own accounts and have freedom to operate independently with no compulsory purchase. Regional membership meetings offer retailers network opportunities, and a monthly promotional newsletter keeps members aware of any special offers. The membership fee includes subsidised hospitality at both exhibitions. As well as the financial benefits of being a member, the camaraderie and willingness help each other is really valued by the group’s members. The group will be exhibiting at the Manchester Furniture Show and the Bed Show this year to explain to independent retailers what it can do for them. Visit: www.minervafurnituregroup.co.uk

The Bed Show will take place at the Telford International Centre for the tenth time

The exhibition is celebrating its tenth edition The showcase of all that’s great in beds opens on 17-18 September when more than 60 top industry names gather to meet their key buyers and specifiers as the Bed Show returns for a milestone tenth anniversary at the Telford International Centre. ‘To be celebrating our tenth year is unbelievable. Back in 2010, we felt there was a niche in the trade show calendar for an event that was devoted to beds at a time of year favoured by the trade. To be supported year-on-year by both exhibitors and visitors shows that we were right to launch such an exhibition. 2019 is already looking like a fantastic show, offering visitors everything they need for their bed business under one roof,’ says Jessica Alexander, National Bed Federation executive director. Run by the NBF, the member-only exhibitor event means visitors can be certain companies exhibiting are part of a reputable trade association complying to a stringent Code of Practice. ‘Over the last decade, the Bed Show
has been a crucial part of our yearly plans, as it brings the whole industry together in one place and gives us the perfect opportunity to showcase our latest products and innovations,’ says Ross Thurston, Millbrook Beds sales and marketing director. ‘We are particularly looking forward to this year’s show and being part of its well-deserved 10-year anniversary celebrations. Receiving one of the Bed Manufacturer of the Year awards last year is pushing us to showcase ourselves in an even more spectacular way and we can’t wait to reveal all.’ ‘Over the last seven years, the Bed Show has been an important part of our marketing strategy. It has allowed us to bring new products to market such as our Euromax and VersoQuilt multifunction border systems. Obviously it is not a machine show, but we are there to support our UK customers in their efforts to sell the new and exciting products that we have often been instrumental in developing,’ says
Mark Laithwaite, MPT Group national sales manager. Exhibitors at this year's show include Airsprung, Breasley, Deluxe, Duvalay, Foam Co, Gallery Direct, Highgate, Highgrove Beds, Hypnos, Kaymed, Relyon, Shire Beds, Sleepeezee and Vogue. Visit: www.bedshow.co.uk

Life in style
Bowood Day
Rowico will debut two collections As advocates of unique design spanning a 50-year heritage, Rowico is always excited about launching its products at the UK’s most iconic lifestyle events and this summer’s show at Manchester Central is no exception. This year will see award-winning Rowico UK returning to its customary location in Foyer 1 with another exciting display theme and yet more new line products and range expansions to further strengthen its offer. The now extremely popular Bowood Day and Windermere collections joined the living and dining portfolio back in early 2018 with the promise of development to complementary bedroom pieces in the not-so-distant future. Proving to be a company of its word, Rowico has chosen the Manchester Furniture Show as the ideal platform to launch seven products that it believes to be its most sumptuous bedroom range developments to date. Also making its debut will be the Oxford redevelopment. Already dubbed ‘the next Purbeck’, this unique eightpiece dining collection harnesses nature’s imperfections in its natural driftwood tops enhanced by hand-painted

monotone undersides with striking ‘X’ frame features. Made entirely by hand and using organic materials, Maya Rattan has also been under development with the creation of a bar table and beautifully proportioned matching stools with stone colour seat pads. Rowico recommends that the integration of these high craft value pieces into everyday functional rooms will effortlessly transform them into appealing social spaces.
Rowico will again be bringing its full offer of contemporary dining and casual chairs, to showcase its alternative designs, comprehensive colour variations and material finishes. After an extremely well received pilot, the Manchester show will also see the release of its collection-specific consumer literature, which emerges to be attractive collateral created at the ideal specification to support its trade customers. Colour story
Alexander & James’ Saddler corner sofa from the new Leather Gallery
Splashes of colour abounded at Long Point, but grey continues to be steadfast Oriental is a key trend for Autumn/Winter 2019, according to Collins & Hayes, which launched a new oriental-style fabric pattern called Temple Rosequartz in a deep green colour story and harmonious accents of teal and coral. There’s also a new range of tailored loose covers in the washable and removable Cover Story range, displayed on a new chaise. An addition to the existing Maple range (three sizes of sofa and snuggler) features a pillow-back option and a choice of slip covers and upholstered covers. Alexander & James brought together the best-selling leather-covered models – and a few new ones – under the new banner of Leather Gallery. Colour choices in leather include teal and plum. Fun, fluffy, textural wool and coloured velvet were also prominent materials, with A&J again showing sofas using both leather and velvet. There were plenty of pom-pom trims, boucle, fringes, frills,

fluff, fur and flounce. Patterns in fabric included botanical prints and abstract art. New at this show was Tobias, an existing model now available with comfortable arm pads and base, forming a single piece. The three-seat sofa and snuggler were on show, but it is also available in a two-seat version. Staud made its Long Point debut with a new showroom. ‘As we’re new to the UK it’s all about the retailer seeing the furniture, though feedback from customers to the brochure is already great,’ says Michael Tattersall, Staud UK sales director. Among the wardrobes was the Media collection, a range specifically designed to hold mounted TVs. One can hold a TV as large as 42in; another features a patented design that allows the TV to fold down into the wardrobe drawer; and in another model the TV twists up and out to reveal the shelving unit behind. Mustard was on trend at Siren, along
with yellow, seagrass, teal and blue tones. Phil Spademan, Siren sales director says there was interest in bright scatters and accent chairs, as people try to brighten up their homes with a splash of colour. ‘There was lots of interest in the new printed velvet pattern Orchid, whose colours – including green, navy, yellow and teal and blue – are designed to mix and match with various plain-coloured items,’ he says. New this show was the Moda modular sofa unit with options including a corner unit, chaise bed, single seat and footstool. Also new was Chester, a modern take on the classic chesterfield sofa, available in leather or fabric and in two sizes. Having previously simplified the fabric ordering options on some models, Ashley Manor has extended the concept to other models. Consumers select the main body fabric from the swatch book and then a set of plain velvet, patterned

and textured covers for the cushion pack are pre-selected for them. The company says this change makes it easier for consumers to choose and makes the previously more complex sales process more straightforward. Hugo Park opened its new Long Eaton showroom with new products including the Orbit hexagonal gold-leaf coffee table, part of the Living by Christiane Lemieux range. The range also features the glass-topped silver or gold-leaf pier coffee table. ‘Eclectic pieces like these add a splash of colour and texture,’ says Philip Paton-Freeman, Hugo Park director. The company hopes to start upholstery production in the UK, ideally in Long Eaton. Parker Knoll was showing an updated version of the iconic Norton recliner, which was the first motion furniture in the UK when it was launched in the 1960s. Introduced as part of an archiveinspired collection to mark the company’s 150th anniversary this year, the chair features a motor-powered footrest, backrest and headrest, all moving independently and operated by three buttons. A simpler version has one button. The chair was seen at the show in burnt orange but is available in leather or fabric in any colour, including three new leather colours: blush, blue and tan. Soft pinks and blues are making a comeback as customers want something different from the grey and beige that have been popular for so long, says Chris Everist, Parker Knoll sales director. Mustard, a strong colour trend in the 1950s and 1960s, is making a comeback
and was seen as an accent colour at several stands, including G Plan, where the Nancy sofa, in a new shape and two sizes, was shown in mustard. Colour options include coral, blue and blush pink. The Vintage collection, which takes inspiration from 1950s’ and 1960s’ furniture trends, is a new collection that attracts a younger, more fashionable customer by referencing the past, says Richard Goode, G Plan national sales manager. At Steed/Peter Guild, the Oxford two and three-seater sofa and chair, which come in a P-arm style, were shown in a new peacock blue fabric. ‘Bright colours are coming in,’ says Caroline Steed, Steed sales director. ‘Grey is still very popular but there’s a lot of interest in colour.’ Leg options include a turned leg on

castor, or a full turned leg, in different shades of wood. A huge super-comfy slouchy sofa, Solace, proved a great hit at Westbridge. It was shown in a new greeny-blue fabric, reflecting the growing aqua trend. Other colours seen on items at the show included turmeric and chalky pastels. Sales of the Rosewood range, launched at JFS, were continuing to do well for Iain James, proving there is still a market for high-end furniture, according to Roger Gosling, Iain James sales director. The same design is also available in other woods, including mahogany and walnut, the latter remaining the most popular. Lemon was the cheery spring shade coming through at David Knight, notably in a new sofa bed and a swivel chair: the company’s first. Dark grey and pebble grey finishes continue to do well for Wiemann. ‘Wood – dark and light oak – remains the biggest seller,’ says Simon Hewitt, Litmus Furniture md. ‘But it’s the greys that are faster selling, though a smaller part of the total.’ A new blue textured fabric on David Gundry’s Jasper sofa model reflected growing customer interest in more colour, also seen in scatter cushions. One trend the business is adapting to is the continuing move away from threepiece suites. ‘I can’t remember the last time we made one,’ says Paul Gundry, David Gundry director. ‘Not so long ago, the balance was 30% sofa and the rest chairs: now it’s 80% sofas.’ Visit: www.longeatonguild.co.uk

Karndean Designflooring showed off its latest Heritage Collection and additions
Inspired by the architectural floors of grand Victorian and Regency villas and townhouses, Karndean Designflooring’s Heritage is designed to give the opulent look of classic geometric tiles. From monochrome designs to blended traditional patterns, the collection reflects both the classic elegance of historic homes and the boldness of contemporary trends. Ideal for capturing the original character of elegant period interiors or for a more contemporary statement, the new collection features a mix of shades that can be used to create a totally individual look. The versatility of the new Heritage Collection is amply demonstrated with 18 pre-assembled colour combinations in a choice of four tile patterns: Clifton, Lansdown, Montpellier and Mayfair. Presenting 10 exclusive new colours, from timeless terracotta, crimson and gold to contemporary dove grey, taupe and baby blue, alongside two Opus designs Luna and Nero, the Heritage Collection features square, triangular and octagonal tiles, available in all 12 shades, which can be mixed and matched in any combination to create a truly individual floor.
Clifton is a timeless classic using square and triangular tiles to create a star and chequerboard effect, presented in four suggested colourways. Lansdown presents a clean and contemporary grid effect which looks equally stunning in black and white or highlighted with bold blue or green inset tiles. For a more modern look, a softer, understated option is offered in a combination of dove grey and white. Montpellier mixes octagonal tiles with square insets in a contrasting shade for a neo-classical style, while Mayfair recreates a traditional pattern historically found in the entrance halls of grand Victorian homes and is offered in a classic colour combination of blue and terracotta or as a modern interpretation with a combination of blue, crimson and gold. Casablanca and Marrakesh are inspired by the artistic techniques of traditional Moroccan architecture, brought to the Iberian peninsula during the eighth century. One creative design, available in two subtle yet striking colourways, offers a modern interpretation of these iconic patterns with a non-uniform, patchwork arrangement that combines geometric forms, curves and crests. Casablanca
shows off this quirky design in a monochrome palette of grey shades for a contemporary statement while Marrakesh uses natural earthy colour tones for a warmer, more playful look. ‘Our designers were inspired by medieval Spanish architecture, such as the Alhambra Palace in Granada, and have created a contemporary interpretation of these Moorish patterns, available in two beautiful colourways. Ideal for the modern home. ‘Casablanca and Marrakesh can be laid as a “rug effect”, as a statement zone within a large open-plan space or even as a full floor to create a real wow feature,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager. EXHIBITION GUIDE
Wildwood in Hawthorn
Flagship Distinctive Flooring debuted Landscape Distinctive Flooring showcased its new Landscape collection: its latest LVT offering, with four sub-collections. The tiles have bevelled edges and are registered embossed for a natural, authentic-looking texture, and come with 0.7mm wear layer on 2.5mm tiles. They have a lifetime residential warranty. ‘Landscape is our flagship range and we couldn’t be prouder to be launching it into the market. The collection is designed to offer differentiation via tone,’ says Richard Hackett, Distinctive Flooring sales and marketing director. ‘The beauty of our new ranges is that the end user can select the wood pattern they prefer – natural, rustic or tonal – and
then find a shade to match their decor. It’s a really clever way of helping with the decision-making process.’ Wildwood comprises 30 dry back colours across three different plank designs. The collection ranges in colour from whites and blonde tones through to dark greys and earthy woods, capable of complementing any characteristic or design theme. Heartridge is a capsule product range, comprising a selection of 12 Wildwood colours, available as dry back plank, SPC click and six parquet colours. ‘It is ideal for retailers who are interested in working with us for the first time, looking to add LVT to other offerings or simply

those who don’t have the space for an extensive product range,’ says Hackett. Shoreline consists of eight different designs for 12in x 24in tiles and six options for 9in x 9in and 18in x 18in tiles. Each design is an authentic shade of stone grey, again covering both light and dark shades. Tapestry is a special edition to complement the Landscape Collection. 16 individual mosaic tiles offered in six colours can be used to create truly bespoke designs. Use alone to create a textured, intricate floor, or pair with products from Shoreline to create a statement floor that is wholly unique. Visit: www.distinctiveflooring.co.uk

EXHIBITION GUIDE
CfF showed off its new app and communication methods Computers for Flooring provides a cloud-based flooring business management system, Carman, and is compliant and compatible with GDPR and Making Tax Digital. It constantly talks with its customers to provide them with tools to deliver the highest levels of efficiency and customer service. The company has recently developed a ‘communications pack’ that has changed the way Carman users interact with customers. Users can now send important information relating to fits, measures, deliveries, marketing, etc via text message directly from the system. Texts arrive showing the sender’s business name, not just a phone number. This ensures customers are kept up to date throughout. The effect for users is smarter productivity with a more professional image. Other features include the ability to synchronise with external calendars such as Google, Outlook and iCal, allowing users to book fits and measures without the fitter having access to Carman. Text campaigns can target specific customers such as landlords with relevant products. The show also saw the launch of CfF’s first iOS and Android app. This is aimed at fitters and estimators and is a digital job completion sheet. All images gathered on job completion will be date and time stamped and uploaded to a secure cloud database for the Carman user in store to download as convenient. CfF says Carman users utilising this application will notice a significant reduction in re-visits and goodwill gestures for customer complaints. With one click, the user will be able to access the job file for visual proof of the job and client comments and signature. The app will also have a quick and regimented course of action for any supplier quality issues, allowing communication and photographs to be stored in a central location in the customer file. This information is held in CfF’s UK data centre and backed up twice a day to another external UK data centre. Visit: www.computersforflooring.com

SHOWROOMS
Set for success
There are 20 roomsets
25,000sqft of showroom space has been created
Fifty Five South has opened a second showroom in Glasgow. It took more than a year to restore the former industrial building situated next to its Premier Housewares headquarters on the banks of the Clyde, taking care to save its exterior fabric while transforming its interior. Exposed brickwork and original industrial fittings pay homage to the building’s rich heritage, while doubleheight ceilings, mezzanines, and a distinctive wedge-shaped roof create a sense of drama. Flooded with natural light, the space feels vast, open and airy, and the 25,000sqft building complements its existing 30,000sqft showroom.
With over 4,000 unique Fifty Five South products currently in stock and hundreds more being added every month, this new showroom provides space to present even more of its constantly evolving products and ranges. Whether it’s glamorous art deco style, exotic Indonesian or cool mid-century modern, visitors can expect to be met with a selection of both established and emerging interior design trends. The whole experience is tailored around visitors, with 20 intimate roomsets configured to flow from one to the next. As well as showcasing how the collections complement and anticipate a variety of design trends, the showroom
