EDITOR’S COMMENT

A tale of two takeovers

Stores closing is the only thing that the House of Fraser and Homebase deals have in common At the time, the £90m purchase of House of Fraser from its brief administration by Sports Direct must have been a great relief for its staff, and offered the possibility of certainty for suppliers and concession holders (if not a settling of bills). However, as I write this the new owner has secured agreements with landlords of just seven of the 59 branches. Mike Ashley, Sports Direct chief executive, is known for his unique negotiating style, the toss of a coin for example, but the longer the uncertainty carries on it won’t be doing Sports Direct, the landlords or suppliers any good. The stores may still be open but if shoppers don’t know if their local branch will remain they are unlikely to take the risk of buying anything from it: look at the headlines over gift vouchers, for example. Another retailer that has store closures on the agenda is Homebase. Forty-two stores will close as it attempts to survive after creditors gave the green light to the CVA. Almost threequarters of its 241 branches are unprofitable and 70 of them will see rents cut by up to 90%. This is a better proposition than some of the House of Fraser landlords are faced with, with proposals of no rent (business rates and maintenance paid) or a rent of 5% of sales. Among the many mistakes Homebase’s former owner Wesfarmers made was to take out the Habitat and Laura Ashley concessions. These gave it a different proposition from B&Q and attracted shoppers who weren’t interested in buying sets of wrenches or pipes. The chain says it wants to go ‘back to its roots’ and this looks likely to see the return of the concessions. At least it has managed to get the landlords on side. Being September can mean one main thing: lots and lots of exhibitions, with many of them overlapping each other. Hopefully you’ve got the cloning device or time travelling machine dusted down in order to see what’s on offer. In this issue we’ve previewed three of them: Long Point, Bed Show and The Flooring Show.

NEWS

Wrangling over House of Fraser leaves future in doubt The future of House of Fraser remains unclear after Sports Direct bought the chain for £90m. Sports Direct has warned that far fewer House of Fraser stores will remain open unless ‘greedy landlords’ slash rents. Proposals include paying rents of 5% of a store’s turnover and covering the cost of business rates for 28 branches. Mike Ashley, Sports Direct chief executive had said he wanted to keep 47 of the 59 branches open. ‘In a year’s time you can hold my feet to the fire on that,’ he told The Sun. However Sports Direct has so far only agreed deals with the landlords of seven branches: Aylesbury, Carlisle, Darlington, London Oxford Street, Middlesbrough, Plymouth and Telford. ‘Some landlords are being very collaborative in order to give us a chance at turning the business around, giving

House of Fraser a lifeline and saving hundreds of jobs,’ says a spokesman. ‘However, some greedy landlords would rather see stores close than help to save the jobs of hundreds of people. We will continue to try and convince these landlords but ultimately time is running out. Some closures will be announced.’ Sports Direct has not said which branches it wants to retain. It is operating the stores under licence from the company’s administrator EY, so could walk away from branches it sees having no future. House of Fraser owed ScS £1.3m for business through the 27 furniture and flooring concessions. The upholstery chain is only likely to recover about 3% of the debt.

Furnishings set to return at Homebase Homebase owner Hilco is set to bring back furniture and furnishings concessions after creditors, including more than 95% of landlords, approved the chain’s CVA. Under its terms 42 of its 241 stores will be closed, with the loss of about 1,500 jobs, and rents cut by between 25% and 90% on 70 stores. 70% of stores are currently loss making. Hilco plans to inject £25m of cash as well as raising £116m of debt to help finance the turnaround. Former owner Wesfarmers closed Habitat and Laura Ashley concessions as it concentrated on the heavier-end of

the diy market. The chain told creditors it would try and bring in other concessions as well. ‘We are pleased that an overwhelming majority of our creditors, including such a proportion of landlords, have supported the plans laid out in the CVA,’ says Damian McGloughlin, Homebase chief executive. ‘We now have the platform to turn the business around and return to profitability. ‘This has been a difficult time for many of our team members and I am very grateful for their continued support and hard work.’

Home sales down at JL John Lewis has seen weekly sales fall every week for the past quarter. Sales fell every week from the week ended 2 June to week ended 24 August. In its most recent update Barry Matheson, John Lewis
head of shop trade, Scotland and North says: ‘Home sales were down 2.1%. However our own brand, House, had a strong week with sales up 11.6% on last year, with bedroom and bath products a particular standout. Upholstery also had a good week with sales rising by 10%.’

Innovation centre opens Bed group Harrison Spinks has opened the doors to its £2.5m innovation centre at its headquarters and manufacturing site in Leeds. The centre houses the company’s development team, management, sales and marketing teams and a showroom for its Somnus and Hybed brands. The development took two years to complete and was designed to create a focal point in the company’s sprawling site, connecting the factory, warehouse, testing facilities and offices and providing communal spaces for employees. ‘Innovation is at the heart of our business so allowing our development and innovation teams to be under the same roof as the marketing and operations side of the business means we can work collaboratively more easily,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md.

Headlam ups prices after raw material costs rise Headlam increased prices by between 2% and 10% on 1 September in the face of higher raw material costs. The group says prices rose by an average of 3% ‘directly reflecting supplier increases as a consequence of raw material price inflation.’ The distributor saw sales at its UK residential business drop by 7.3% to £224m in the six months to 30 June. Group sales rose by 1% to £337.5m thanks to higher European sales. Underlying pre-tax profits rose by 0.9% to £17.7m. Steve Wilson, Headlam chief executive warned that the UK market would not improve in the second half of the year, which would affect profits.

‘Given the current softness in the UK floorcovering market and the associated trading impact on the company's UK businesses, coupled with the current indications that these conditions are likely to continue during the second half of the year, the board now expects that the full year outcome, whilst ahead of the full year 2017, will be towards the lower end of current market expectations,’ he said. The interim dividend was maintained at 7.55p. Former Arsenal md Keith Edelman, who is chairman of Revolution Bars, will become a non-executive director on 1 October. He will be joined by Alison Littley, former Mars and Diageo executive, on 1 January.

Casper is Which? members favourite mattress Casper is Which? readers best mattress brand for 2018. The magazine surveyed 4,169 members who had bought a mattress in the past decade and asked them to rate the mattress on comfort; accuracy of description in terms of firmness or softness; how it matched overall expectations and value for money. Casper scored 87%, with Simba second on 84%. Vi-Spring, which topped the list for the previous three years, scored 83%. The rest of the top ten were: John Lewis (81%); Harrison (81%); Dunlopillo (80%); Hypnos (79%); Ikea (79%); Relyon (75%) and Marks & Spencer (74%).

Casper scored 87%

Although the top six received five stars for description and expectations, none of the 20 rated brands scored five stars for comfort or value for money.

The results were based on sample sizes of: Casper (37); Simba (30); Vi-spring (218); John Lewis (500); Harrison (110); Dunlopillo (94); Hypnos (269); Ikea (284); Relyon (93); Marks & Spencer (95); Sealy (281); Tempur (291); Silentnight (71); Sleepeezee (91); Rest Assured (40); Dormeo (32); Myer's (58); Slumberland (98); Dreams (169); and Bensons for Beds (70). Brands that failed to receive the necessary 30 respondents were Airsprung; Emma; Eve; Leesa; Millbrook and Otty. Dreams avoided being the lowest ranked brand for the seventh successive year with 61%, outscoring Bensons by 1%.

Laura Ashley suffers triple sales decline Laura Ashley saw sales in all of its home categories fall in the past year. In the year to 30 June, sales of home accessories – lighting, gifts, bed linen, rugs, throws, cushions and children's accessories – which accounts for 34% of UK sales fell by 3.6% and by 2.9% on a like for like basis. In recent years the sector has enjoyed growth of 5% to 10%. Furniture – upholstery, beds, cabinet and mirrors – makes up 29% of sales and fell by 8.2% and 4.1% respectively. ‘Given the softer consumer confidence at this juncture, some of our customers have deferred the more expensive purchase of a new sofa or bed. We are adding a selection of more competitively priced products to this range but will maintain the overall quality and diversity of choice which we now offer,’ said the chain. Decorating – fabric, curtains, wallpaper, paint and decorative accessories – accounts for a fifth of sales, and sales dropped by 13.9% and 7.5%. ‘This category has been particularly slow and significant effort has been made to address its performance during the next financial year, particularly with the inclusion of one new range aimed at a broader customer base.’ Clothing sales rose 7.2%. UK sales fell from £252m to £236. Pre-tax profits fell from £6.3m

to £100,000 as the chain made a loss of £4.7m on selling the building that was to be its Asian headquarters. During the year a net seven stores were closed, reducing selling space by 2.6% to 662,000sqft. A net three stores will close this year. ‘Laura Ashley's brand is built on beautifully designed, high quality products. Whilst the trading environment will continue to be challenging, we remain resolutely confident in the underlying strength of this much loved brand, in its relevance for today's consumer and in our strategies to both maintain and develop the brand and the company,’ says Khoo Kay Peng, Laura Ashley chairman.

SERVICE

Richard Renouf

Reasonableness rules Some inspections can be trickier than expected It had taken five months to get through the door. The first appointment had been cancelled. Emails had been sent to me and not copied to the other party trying to sway my opinion, in spite of the court order directing otherwise. Both parties had refused to comply at different stages and I had almost given up. Now I was ushered in to this central London flat by the customer’s mother as the customer herself checked to make sure the installer wasn’t about to turn up. The room had been cleared of everything except the fitted bedroom furniture. What hadn’t been fitted was laid out in orderly rows along the hallway. Three folding garden chairs and a coffee table had been placed in the room and I was invited to sit down for what I assumed would be a brief discussion before the inspection started. It wasn’t. The customer expected to go through every detailed point of her case and to have me inspect each item and give my opinion before we moved on to the next item. ‘I’ve got everything you need to do the inspection,’ she said. ‘Stepladders, a builder’s ladder, a torch and a pair of binoculars.’

Binoculars were not required

22

Interiors Monthly September 2018

‘Why would I need those?’ I asked, feigning innocence. ‘So you can see all the holes on the top of the units – you’ll need the ladders for that – and the binoculars will help you to see some of the faults without needing to climb up,’ she said. My comments in response to this must have had the effect I wanted. The customer was reassured that I’d already read through everything in the court file, from both sides, and that I needed to do my inspection independently and not under supervision. When I eventually left the property (after topping up my parking and nearly overrunning a second time) the customer expressed her relief that the inspection hadn’t been the ordeal she had been expecting. All that remained was for me to write up my findings, and wait for the reaction from both parties. Neither would be happy unless I found totally in their favour, and I now knew that wasn’t going to happen. My report would, as always, identify any issues that a reasonable person would find unacceptable. Binoculars would not be needed, nor would special

equipment to look for things that were out of sight and would never affect the furniture. Some British Standards do make clear how products should be inspected. For example, BS 8201: 2011 Code of practice for installation of flooring of wood and wood-based panels states: ‘Floors should be inspected from a normal viewing position either standing or seated. When viewing the floor, only those features which are immediately obvious to any independent party should be considered as potential defect issues. Careful positioning of backlighting or unusual viewing angles (crouching or kneeling, etc) would not be considered reasonable criteria for identifying a visual defect (Section 16).’ Whether or not there’s such a statement in an appropriate standards document, the test of reasonableness always applies. If you can’t see it, and it won’t make any difference to the product during its expected life, it is unlikely to be a defect. Pioneering designers of the time, the Reids helped to define the understanding of modernity, shaping the way we live today. Modernist design brought open-plan spaces, inside-outside living and accessible informality into homes, along with highly crafted, stylish, ergonomic furniture. Today, Mid-century Modern – a widely used term which describes the

architecture, furniture and graphic design prevalent in the middle part of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965) – is currently enjoying a huge renaissance. The Reids’ most enduring designs were those they created for Stag during their 10-year alliance with the British furniture manufacturer, which saw their initial range of bedroom furniture selected for the Design Index by the Council of Industrial Design. Unusually compared with many of today’s contracts between designers and manufacturers, the Reids retained ownership of their designs for Stag. The S-Range of living and dining furniture, created in 1960, took its inspiration from the prevailing Scandinavian designers of the time, and included low-slung cabinets in

teak, with projecting tab handles and V-shaped legs in satin-plated steel. This look and style has become one of the most enduring to come out of the era, with original pieces now being on-trend collectors’ items. The range includes several innovative design features, including the 270 degree hinges on the cabinet doors, the swivel feet on the dining chairs, finger jointed trays and solid beech drawers. The S-Range was described as having ‘simplicity of statement, an intelligent approach to flexibility [making it] one of the outstanding furniture ranges of the year,’ by Design magazine in 1960. Sylvia Reid, now 93, says of her and her husband’s designs: ‘We were trained to look at everything from a design point of view. We thought carefully about how everything was made and about it being practical to live with.’ Many of the modernist designs for which this era is especially famous

permeated the national consciousness as a result of the 1951 Festival of Britain, which became the launchpad for some of Britain’s greatest design pioneers such as Robin Day, Sir Terence Conran and the Reids. Practical flexible and ergonomic designs, like the Reids’ 2018 re-issued S-Range, although created with the new post-war practical economy in mind, have become even more sought after for contemporary homes and interiors. Once progressive and aspirational, they are now valued for their understated finesse and simple lines, which create a stylish framework for self-expression and multifunctional living. ‘It is an irony that the popularity of my parents’ designs has remained relevant and sought after, yet their name and contribution to the British mid-century canon remains largely unrecognised and unacknowledged,’ said Dominic Reid. ‘In a great example of convergent thinking, Nicholas Radford contacted me to propose the idea of a reissue, at exactly the same time I had been thinking over the idea due to interest in the market for mid-century items. ‘After conversations with my mother, Nicholas and I decided that the first John and Sylvia design to be re-issued should be

the S-Range of dining and living furniture. Way ahead of its time, the S-Range looks as stylish and cutting edge today as it did then, and it is our aim that this re-issue will promote a rediscovery and renewed appreciation for my parents’ work.’ ‘The S-Range is an extremely important collection, and we wanted to do more than just design a range based on the originals. We wanted to recreate the original pieces, using the original design,’ says Radford. ‘So with Dominic's involvement and his parents’ designs, we have recreated the pieces to near-identical specifications. The integrity of the range is personally

important to both of our families, so we are very excited by this reissue.’ ‘My mother is delighted that Nicholas and I have joined forces to reissue her and my father’s designs and make them available to today’s discerning public. The S-Range was simply a great modernist design which by definition has stood the test of time,’ says Dominic. The original collaboration between John and Sylvia Reid and the Radfords sparked the beginning of a lifelong friendship between the families, with the Reids becoming godparents to Radford’s brother. RETAIL TIMELINE OF A RELAUNCH • J ohn and Sylvia Reid (née Payne) meet whilst studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture in London, at the beginning of the Second World War, and are married in 1948. •T he Reids began working together in 1949, setting up in practice as Chartered Architects and Consultant Designers in 1951. • S ylvia initially worked for Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry, becoming assistant to Robin Day from 1950-1951 and co-designing the signage for the Festival of Britain with Day and Milner Gray. • J ohn Reid created the mural of musical instruments for Day’s room setting in the Home Entertainment section of the Homes and Gardens Pavilion at the Festival of Britain. •T he Reids were approached by the Stag Cabinet Company in 1952. The company wanted to introduce more contemporary designs so approached the Council of Industrial Design who recommended the couple. •T he Reids’ inaugural C-Range (bedroom furniture) became a commercial success, meeting with the approval of the design fraternity and appearing in Heal’s catalogues for two consecutive years. • B y 1957, the success of the C-Range accounted for 52% of Stag’s overall sales. The range remained in production until 1962. lthough the manufacturers originally concealed • A that the Reids had designed the C-Range, by the mid-1950s the fact that it was architect designed became a key selling point. •T he S-Range (dining room furniture) was launched in 1960. The range originally consisted of eight pieces, comprising low-slung teak-veneered cabinets with projecting tab handles and V-shaped legs in nickelplated stainless steel, slim leather-covered dining chairs, three alternative tables and a variety of sideboards and shelving units. •T he S-Range was accepted by the Council of Industrial Design for inclusion in its Design Index. •T he Reids also designed Fineline in 1960, Duet in 1961-1962 and Minstrel, their final design for Stag, in 1963. By then, their architectural practice was so busy that they stopped designing for Stag. •T heir son Dominic began working on the re-issue of the Reids’ archive in 2007 in consultation with his mother. • I n 2014, Nicholas Radford, md of Nathan Furniture and son of the original manufacturer of the Stag range, joined Dominic Reid to plan the re-issue of the John and Sylvia S-Range.

Production of the anniversary collection is limited

Interiors Monthly September 2018

To mark the 60th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen creating the Egg, Swan and Drop chairs, Republic of Fritz Hansen is holding exhibitions on the trio, and Jacobsen’s other designs for the Royal SAS hotel in Copenhagen, in 16 cities across Europe and the US across the world. This month it comes to London. As part of the anniversary the manufacturer has created limited edition versions of the designs along with the Kaiser idell floor lamp in a new finish, a pouf by Cecilie Manz, and a throw in merino wool. Just 1,958 anniversary Egg and Swan chairs will be produced and Drop and the accessories will only be sold this year. For Egg and Swan the company has chosen to use Pure leather. ‘In addition to being very soft to the touch, this Pure leather is a visual pleasure that tells the story of its original existence,’ says Christian Andresen, Fritz Hansen head of design.

‘Looking closer, you discover beauty marks such as scars, tiny insect bites and visible necklines – all of which reflect the leather’s life story. This particular Pure leather has never been dyed, and as such will naturally grow darker and obtain a more vintage look with time, sunlight

UPHOLSTERY and usage, making each chair unique. The leather is vegetabletanned and IVN-certified, which means it’s even safe to eat. We’ve actually tried. ‘The Egg and the Swan are regarded as design icons and are passed down through generations. In choosing the Pure leather, we wanted to emphasise the very personal aspect of this lifecycle. Each home that takes in an anniversary collection piece will make its mark on it simply by living life in and around it. Stories will be told and kept for generations to come.’ The anniversary Drop chair is upholstered in the Sera fabric in brown-grey taupe. ‘Sera is a very durable and highly resistant wool blend textile with a grainy feel and organic look. The crepe texture interprets nature whilst maintaining a sophisticated expression. An attractive material with a rich touch and beautiful lustre, Sera stands out with its special woven binding and its visual presentation of both subtle and intense hues at the same time,’ he says.

The original star base on Egg and Swan and the legs of Drop are plated with 23-karat gold. ’The anniversary collection is a celebration of some of the finest designs in history, so gold seemed an appropriate choice – but in an exclusive, sheer matte look. We electroplated the aluminium surface, and the result has an almost satin gloss look and feel. This becomes a tad less shiny and a little darker with time, emphasizing the patina of the overall design as it ages with beauty,’ explains Andresen. Cecilie Manz designed the original pouf for Fritz Hansen Objects in 2016, and this version sees the bottom half upholstered in linen, while the top features Pure leather left over from Egg and Swan production. The Kaiser idell tiltable floor lamp is interpreted with a new finish: a metallic dark brown that stays true to the earthy colours of the rest of the collection, while brass details complement the dark surface. The craftsmanship behind the Egg and the Swan has not changed since the chairs were created in 1958. The leather is chosen and cut by hand, and each chair is still manufactured by hand, with an Egg for example taking 1,100 hand stitches to craft. ‘The Egg, Swan and Drop are much more than just chairs. Jacobsen himself. These items tie Fritz Hansen to a great Danish design heritage – one that is taught to young design and architecture students around the world. It is a heritage we are proud and humbled to be a part of, and we cannot think of a better way to express our reverence for Jacobsen’s legacy than through a celebration of some of his most recognised designs’, says Jacob Holm, Fritz Hansen ceo. ‘Our long-term partnership with Arne Jacobsen, of course, embodied our core values – and infused bold, new flavour into our brand, pushing us technically and aesthetically. ‘Arne Jacobsen was, first and foremost, a furniture architect: one with a functional, innovation-driven design philosophy that led him to continually challenge materials, shapes and techniques. ‘His work ethic and passion are endless sources of inspiration, and I can clearly see their impact throughout our organisation today. Each of us is aware of the great heritage we come from – and committed to upholding it.’ The exhibition takes place at Fritz Hansen’s Margaret Street, London W1 store from 15-23 September. Environment in mind Sealy has a trio of green initiatives

Handmade in the heart of Cumbria, Sealy UK’s new eco initiatives are playing a part in helping the environment, through a commitment to being carbon neutral, a zero-to-landfill policy and an ingredients list. Sealy UK has become a carbon neutral company, its latest step in its aim to become a more environmentally conscious supplier. The move has seen Sealy UK become a carbon neutral organisation in both production and distribution, and will form a key part of its commitment to sustainability and its Corporate and Social Responsibility strategy. Conscious of its carbon footprint and the effect that manufacturing can have on the environment, the accreditation is a result of Sealy balancing out its carbon emissions by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere. ‘An increasing number of businesses are becoming carbon neutral as a growing number of consumers look to purchase products from environmentally conscious suppliers. At Sealy we recognise the need for more in the industry to play

36

Interiors Monthly September 2018

their part in preventing global climate change, which is why we have worked hard to secure our carbon neutral status. It is our hope that our initiatives will lead the way in making the furniture industry greener and more environmentally friendly,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy UK sales and marketing director. The company has also pledged to minimise any adverse environmental

Olympia

effects as a result of its production and distribution with a zero-to-landfill policy. ‘When it comes to our environmental footprint, we are continually assessing the environmental impact of our ongoing operations. Through minimising the use of materials, resources and energy, we are seeking to reduce wastage to the lowest practical level, whilst also pursuing a zero-to-landfill policy,’ says Robinson.

BEDS AND BEDROOM Padova

‘In fact, products are now being designed in such a way to minimise their environmental effects in production, usage and disposal. Consideration is also being given to the environmental effects of raw material sourcing, with the aim of using materials and components that are renewable and recyclable wherever possible.’ The company has also introduced an ‘ingredients list’ of materials used in its beds. The scheme takes its inspiration from food labelling, and comes on the back of the rise of the conscious consumer: individuals who demand quality and ethically produced products. Available to access online, ingredients lists enable consumers to educate themselves on the ethical and quality components that go into the production of Sealy’s beds and mattresses. ‘It is remarkable and illogical that you get more information about the contents of a bag of crisps than you do for a mattress that may cost more than £1,000. At a time when consumers are expecting full product disclosure on everything they buy, we felt it was right to be completely

Fusion

transparent about exactly what goes into our mattresses,’ says Robinson. ‘All of our product “ingredients” are of the highest standard, something we’re extremely proud of. We hope it works to drive transparency and innovation across

the board, with other like-minded manufacturers following suit. ‘After all, if you have nothing to hide, then there should be complete and total product disclosure.’ Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Sealy beds are handmade in the heart of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. When you create something in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a constant reminder that you want things to stay that way. In the UK, we currently produce over 200 million tonnes of rubbish each year. This includes everything from commercial and industrial to household waste but only a percentage of this is recovered – the rest is sent to landfill. The impact in dumping everything into landfill areas is evident; air pollution, ground water pollution, soil and land pollution, landfill fires, financial costs and of course, health implications. So what does ‘Zero to Landfill’ actually mean? The ultimate aim of this philosophy is to prevent any waste material produced within an organisation going to landfill, which in turn offers a more sustainable route to resourcing for future generations. At Sealy, we have been making positive steps to change that over the past decade. Ten years ago only 15% of the waste produced in the production of our beds was either recycled or sent to energy recovery. Today, we are Zero to Landfill from site. Our goal is to make our nation ‘Deeper Sleepers.’ We believe that, along with our beds containing state of the art technology and unsurpassed comfort, the knowledge that your bed has been manufactured under a Zero to Landfill policy will help you rest a little easier.

The NBF runs a number of awareness campaigns throughout the year

Did you know? Today the National Bed Federation is well known for its member-exclusive Bed Show. But here are 10 other things about the NBF that you might not be aware of…

1

In total, 19 out of the UK’s top 20 bed makers and suppliers are NBF members (the exception is an importer so not eligible for membership). The NBF Code of Practice has a Primary Authority Partnership with West Yorkshire Trading Standards (WYTS) which takes responsibility for providing regulatory advice and guidance to members: they are entitled to rely on this wherever they trade across the UK, subject to legal safeguards. The NBF Code of Practice is approved as Assured Advice by WYTS. The third version of the NBF’s Code of Practice will be published in October, with member audits taking place from November to mid 2019. In addition to the current areas it covers – flammability, cleanliness of fillings, trade descriptions, textile composition labelling, biocides, REACH and EU timber regulations – the new version will encompass responsible use of any used components or materials, process controls and procedures, and the requirements of the PAS7100 product recall standard. Closer attention to health and safety will also be included, potentially triggering more comprehensive separate audits. Further

2

3

40

Interiors Monthly September 2018

awareness and checks covering social, ethical and modern slavery requirements, backed up by a programme of specific random audits, are also being considered. Retailers who want to build trust with their customers can do so by selling NBF Approved products. There’s a comprehensive Retail Supporter pack of POS and artwork for those who can demonstrate that at least 50% of their UK-sourced products come from NBF members. NBF members also benefit from comprehensive technical advice and support regarding regulations and standards, and a range of market intelligence data such as twice-yearly bespoke consumer purchasing surveys and quarterly sales reports plus insights from economic experts. The NBF is taking a lead role on mattress disposal and recycling, working on initiatives such as a Register of Approved Mattress Recyclers (RAMR); clear policies on used and reconditioned mattresses, components and materials; and engagement with governments in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland regarding a possible ban of mattresses from landfill and the development of an EPR scheme.

The NBF set up the Sleep Council in 1995 to communicate key messages about the importance of a good bed, regularly replaced, to achieving a good night’s sleep. Today it is working with Northumbria University to define what healthy sleeping actually means and to set out definitive sleep hygiene rules. The NBF runs a number of awareness campaigns throughout the year, including National Bed Month in March and Sleeptember. Retailers and producers can join in with these; toolkits of artwork, videos and leaflets are available at www. bedfed.org.uk/trade/marketing-support In 2017 almost 1,000 items of media coverage were achieved, including almost 100 radio broadcasts and two TV appearances, with an estimated audience reach of over 251million. The Sleep Council has more than 18,000 visitors a month to its website, over 22,000 Twitter followers and over 5,000 Facebook likes. Both the Sleep Council and NBF will be participating in two new consumer sleep shows: Somnex on 12-14 October in London, and the new sleep event at The Mindful Living Show on 15-16 March in London. Wiemann is enjoying sales growth Award-winning German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann is celebrating a growth in sales despite the more challenging market conditions that have been seen for some years. ‘The market seems to be slowing across 2018 – the hot summer has definitely had an effect – but thankfully at Wiemann we are still seeing growth. We have been working hard to build business with our customers and strive for continuous improvement, focussing on factors such as quality, value for money and excellent service which we believe are the recipe to succeed and win in the long term,’ says Simon Hewitt, md of Wiemann’s sole agent in the UK and Ireland, Litmus Furniture. ‘We’ve also been working behind the scenes to develop two exciting new ranges and colourways for our bestseller, Loft, to help create excitement and drive

end of year sales, which will be revealed at the Autumn Furniture Show in October.’ Wiemann understands that offering great value for money is essential. From promotional ranges such as Berlin and Miami to top-of-the-range semi-solid collections like Serena and Lido, the features and benefits are distinct and prices keen in comparison to similar competitor products. The manufacturer also ensures that it can deliver what is promised. All Wiemann’s products – whether premium or value – are made in the same factory, with the same quality standards and attention to detail. Its wide choice of products and options means that it is able to provide a full bedroom solution, whatever the requirements. For example, its awardwinning Cayenne range, which includes dual depth wardrobes, not only looks

impressive but offers a practical way of squeezing more storage space into a bedroom, especially around the bed. A collection highlight is the wide choice of drawers and units to provide further storage options. Wiemann continually looks for ways in which it can continue developing its systems and has a tried and trusted national home delivery and installation (HDI) programme in place. It has recently taken on HDI quality manager Andrew Mear to ensure continuity and progression. He will look at evolving Wiemann’s HDI framework to ensure the manufacturer continues to lead on service rather than follow. ‘We know that there’s no better measure of service than customer feedback. It’s true evaluation when they come back because they appreciate what you’re offering. Design, style, innovation and practicality are all factors that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to creating a popular bedroom furniture range. But what’s key for a successful business is excellent customer service,’ says Kai Schwenke, Wiemann export manager. Wiemann also benefits from Litmus Furniture’s team of UK and Irish agents across eight territories, who are available to help customers with product training and knowledge. Wiemann will be exhibiting at the Autumn Long Point Show at its permanent Long Eaton showroom and at Stoneleigh Park for the Autumn Furniture Show. Visit: www.wiemannuk.co.uk

New look Nolte is investing heavily in its production facilities to increase flexibility

Steffen Urbschat is in charge of sales and marketing

More options, less set-up time, maintenance of precisely defined stocks at the minimum possible level – these are important issues in every sector of industry and Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel in Germersheim, Germany are no exception. After a period of restructuring, the companies are now making substantial investments including in a flexible new production plant for front and side panels. This facility will make production in single batch sizes and according to individual customer requirements a reality. About €50m will be invested in various

areas of Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel in Germersheim by 2023. Much of this is earmarked for modernising production facilities. This involves a dramatic shift in the company’s production philosophy – making it a single batch size manufacturer rather than being restricted to series products. As a result, furniture will be produced much more efficiently and the consumer will profit from even greater choice. Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel have been through a difficult period. The two companies have undergone three years of restructuring to get back on track and

ensure they are optimally equipped for the future. This has been very successful – demonstrated by good retail distribution, streamlined portfolios and, most importantly, rising sales figures. In 2017 Nolte Möbel and Express Möbel generated sales of about €130m: doubledigit growth compared with 2016. Nolte Möbel was voted Best Bedroom Manufacturer for the second time in the 2018 Interiors Monthly Awards. The entrepreneurial family behind the company has a strong commitment to the Germersheim site and is the driving force behind these major improvements. ‘Our business is a balancing act between responding to changing market conditions, offering the right product lines and implementing efficient technical production standards,’ says Steffen Urbschat, who has overall responsibility for sales and marketing for both brands

and has been Nolte Möbel management board spokeman since June 2016. ‘That’s why it was important for us to remember our core competences. Clearly, those are wardrobes and chests of drawers. And we used this as a basis for a detailed analysis of our product lines and production. With ongoing investments in state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, we will give our customers

even more choice in the future. They will be able to create “their own” furniture using our product lines.’ Underlying this is a change of philosophy from being a manufacturer of series furniture to consistent production of single batches: the first step was to streamline the product range. ‘We introduced a new generation of wardrobe bodies for our product lines.

These bodies had relatively little in common with their predecessors – not just in terms of their designs but also their underlying technologies. We have now harmonised the models much more effectively and, for example, repositioned the doors. This in turn means that we only have to manage a smaller range of top and base boards,’ explains Urbschat. Visit: www.nolte-moebel.de

West look Geometric fronts set the tone for Braxton The new Braxton bedroom collection from West Bros follows the company’s tradition of modern design with an emphasis on natural materials and craftsmanship. Braxton employs strong geometric fronts with deep reveals that emphasise the separation between the cabinet and drawer fronts as well as headboard panels and frames. The canted legs add a whimsical touch to complete the look. The collection includes a high wood headboard with an option of an upholstered version. A rich brown or natural finish option enhances the rich grain. West Bros has long been known for its finishes that really show the quality of North American made products. ‘We continue to fill the need and desire in the marketplace for high-quality contemporary and transitional products,’ says Paul West, West Bros founder and president. ‘Unlike the products coming from off-shore, where they generally don’t do contemporary because there’s no ornamentation to camouflage flaws, the calibre of our construction and finishing techniques ensures we have nothing to hide. ‘Consumers today have a growing awareness of and tremendous interest in design. Our social media followers are designers and design-conscious people that are more sophisticated and fashiondriven in the upper middle of the market where we sit. They seek experience, excitement and furnishings that reflect their individuality. And they are clearly demonstrating to our industry that they are bored by lacklustre traditional furniture presentations.’ Visit: www.westbrosfurniture.com

We’re thrilled to be broadening Kindred’s product selection with our eagerly anticipated new beds. They are set to maximise the potential profit for our retailers and are different from anything we’ve offered before. It’s an exciting time for the brand,’ Bassett adds. Visit: www.kindred.co.uk

BEDS AND BEDROOM Retailers have welcomed the new display system

Fresh streams Protect-A-Bed has a new display system The 2018 retail landscape has to date been a difficult trading period, with many retailers experiencing lower footfall and lower sales volume. Therefore, finding additional revenue streams and strategies to maximise every sale has become more important. Protect-A-Bed specialises in significantly driving mattress protector sales with its retail partners. This year the company launched its Partnership Promise, which consists of six elements: trust, marketing, product, display, training and service. ‘The Protect-A-Bed Partnership Promise is first and foremost built on a foundation of trust. We have a proven history for dynamically growing sales for our retail partners and trust is essential to achieve this outcome. Our mattress protectors offer the highest quality protection using materials such as Tencel, Bamboo and our unique new Nordic Chill fibre. Plus all mattress protectors come with a bundled, simple to sell product and mattress anti-stain guarantee programme of up to 15 years,’ says Paul Lake, Protect-A-Bed marketing manager. ‘In support, our sales training provides confidence and a structure, creating a

52

Interiors Monthly September 2018

platform that ensures every member of the retailer’s sales team is an expert in mattress protection. Combining this with our award-winning service support and innovation in our in-store display systems, our promise to our partners generates success.’ Following the launch of new packaging in the final stages of 2017, this year has seen Protect-A-Bed launch its new display system, creating a feature in-store destination. Last month the company won the Interiors Monthly Awards Best Mattress Protection Provider. ‘Being recognised in

this way was an excellent testament to our dedicated work in this category,’ says Lake. ‘The future is looking extremely positive with the launch of a new retail display system that has revolutionised our in-store offer. Successful trade shows throughout the year including the January Furniture Show, Minerva Furniture & Bed Show, Manchester Furniture Show and most recently the AIS Bed Show, have proven that retailers want to work with the best in class,’ adds Lake. Riaz Ahmed with his sons Imran, Adnan and Majid and grandson Jamal

All grown up Sweet Dreams is celebrating its 30th anniversary Sweet Dreams, the bed and furniture manufacturer, is celebrating 30 years in business this autumn. Riaz Ahmed, Sweet Dreams founder and md and his team have steered the family firm through product innovation, major investment and significant expansion. ‘The last 30 years have flown by. It doesn’t seem that long since I was starting out manufacturing headboards in Nelson, and then opening a factory in Burnley to make divans. We’ve progressed a lot since those days and overall it’s been a very happy and rewarding journey,’ says Ahmed. ‘The people I’ve met and worked with along the way – customers and suppliers as well as agents, and especially our staff – have contributed to this, and it’s a source of great pleasure to me that Sweet Dreams now provides employment for hundreds of local people. Of course, it’s also very gratifying having seen members of my family join the company and contribute to its success. ‘I’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry, not least the fashions and how people are opting for bigger beds, beds with more storage, and beds that confer benefits through their fillings and covers. ‘The change I’ve been most pleased to see, though, has been the industry’s determination to make beds safe and healthy for consumers and to create a level playing field for responsible manufacturers. A lot of thanks has to go to the NBF for this. It has helped tremendously with marketing too, and with training sales staff in recent years, but in my view the most important industry innovation has been the NBF audit and associated accreditation. The NBF Code of Practice we adhere to is becoming prevalent: it is increasingly the norm to be asked if we are Approved Members and we’re proud to say we were among the first companies to sign up.

54

‘Thank you to all who’ve helped make Sweet Dreams what it is today, and I’d like to let you know how much I look forward to working alongside you in the coming years.’ 'I joined Sweet Dreams after starting my career with another bed manufacturer,’ says Jackie McGarvey, Sweet Dreams general manager. ‘The first factory was in New Hall Street and is no longer there, but I do recall that we made a bed called the Paris and it was blue. From there the bed collections grew. ‘I was delighted to be given many roles through the company which allowed me to grow my expertise and develop a thorough understanding of what it takes to make not only good commercial models but also innovative new models. Selecting products to enhance our own manufactured range has also been a speciality,

The other children would come in through the summer holidays and it has been a pleasure to see them grow into the people they are today. With Jamal, Majid’s son, having come on board, the next generation is now in place to ensure that the company continues its success through the coming years. ‘Reflecting on my 25 years at Sweet Dreams, mostly I would have to say a big thank you to Riaz for allowing me the freedom to work with my own instincts and for supporting my decisions, and letting me learn from them. The enthusiasm from the family for the business, along with the company’s ethics, makes it an enjoyable company to work for and I hope to be here for many years to come: Riaz and his sons have always made me feel part of the family. ‘The Anniversary collection to celebrate our 30th anniversary is very special. We’ve identified our most popular high-end specifications and created four divans to commemorate the best in Sweet Dreams manufacture. Two beds are encapsulated and have cushion tops with mini springs. Two beds feature traditional pocket spring mattresses. All contain natural, luxury fillings. The bases, with chrome-coloured glides, come in textured velvet in three colourways and are available in diverse drawer and ottoman options. There’ll be a matching Anniversary headboard, too.’ The launch of the Anniversary collection will also usher in a competition that will see 30 of the new beds won by retailers from October. ‘We’ll be launching beds across the collection at the Bed Show, including fresh Enchanted models, a new adjustable bed and a range of gorgeous frames. The three mattresses that feature in

Interiors Monthly September 2018

the Dunlopillo Go collection – Energise, Exceed and Excel – have been designed to sit below the premier Dunlopillo Signature collection, and are aimed at a younger audience and at a more affordable level. The mattresses are made from comfort layers of 100% pure Dunlopillo latex sourced from environmentally sustainable plantations, which are matched with carefully selected encapsulated pocket spring foundations to produce a good–better–best story. Through its unrivalled elasticity, Dunlopillo latex provides instant pressure relief for the user and encourages a healthy blood supply to the muscles so they awake revitalised. It also offers progressive comfort by adapting and contouring to individual

profiles and movements. With healthy sleepers changing their physical posture up to 60 times a night, the responsive nature of latex is a huge advantage for achieving deep sleep without disturbances. The Dunlopillo comfort layers are supported by individually nested pocket springs that add additional support to help the body’s renewal during sleep. Adapting to the user’s body weight, the pocket springs move independently from one another, offering complete support for the body by allowing spine and joints to maintain the correct position during sleep. The collection is backed up by in-store POS system and the Dunlopillo Go ‘Fast’ five to seven-day delivery. Visit: www.dunlopillo.co.uk

BEDS AND BEDROOM Highgrove wants to double the number of in-store displays this year

Support strategy Highgrove will add another brand to its mix The Highgrove Beds Group will use the Bed Show as a launch platform for its new retail-only brand HG Beds, and will also showcase several new models and innovative covers throughout its Highgrove and Sanctum brands. The company has taken a strategic decision to further strengthen its support for traditional bricks-and-mortar stockists whilst at the same time recognising that consumer buying habits are changing as online purchases take a further market share. HG Beds will be focused towards the entry level, with traditional Bonnell and 1000 Pocket specifications combining high-tech upholstery with modern stretch and damask covers. HG Beds will also be supported in-store with POS including branded footmats and pillowcases available free of charge to stockists. The introduction of the HG Beds brand will allow the group to develop its moresleep brand as its primary online

brand and this will be made available to stockists requiring Internet products. The flagship Highgrove brand has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the introduction of the Ambassador Stockist programme in 2017 has brought real benefits to both the group and its independent retailers. In the past year, 30 new bespoke Highgrove in-store displays have been installed throughout the UK, with more than £100,000 invested. Shane Harding, Highgrove head of marketing is confident that the investment has paid dividends. ‘The modular nature of the displays means that we’ve been able to tailor each one to our customers’ needs and despite a challenging market, we’ve seen a 34% incremental sales increase where displays have been installed,’ he says. The company aims to at least double this number in 2018. Highgrove will also be adding to its Equasleep temperature control and

We have also commissioned a new state of the art vacuum-packing machine at our Derby factory, which, along with our unique RFID technology, will keep us at the forefront of innovation and production for years to come,’ says Darren Crowshaw, Breasley joint md.

The Salus collection, which is manufactured at Breasley’s Manchester plant, will see 18 new divan colours along with 10 new headboard designs. The Salus Viscoool collection has a new backcare model added to the range, along with a new embroidered cover for a more luxurious look and feel, and the Natural Collection features the new top of the range Linden 5000 model. BEDS AND BEDROOM Shire celebrated its 20th anniversary last year

Guest focus Shire Beds will concentrate on the spare bedroom As the guest bedroom becomes an increasingly important factor in the modern home, and with the unpredictable world of hospitality in mind, the Shire Bed Company has developed two new ranges for launch at the 2018 Bed Show to suit impromptu and VIP company. It will unveil a new, top-of-the-range Egyptian cotton collection of white mattresses, designed to provide a high level of comfort and luxury for guests. Shire Beds will also show a new high quality bed in a box that provides consumers with a quick-fix solution. ‘The Bed Show is the highlight of our year and we look forward to launching a range of new collections to suit the ever-changing needs of consumers. We’re finding that a growing number of people are placing a lot more emphasis on the design and quality of their guest bedrooms,’ says Fara Butt, Shire Beds sales and marketing director. ‘The guest room is no longer the dumping ground for old mattresses from the main bedroom but a room where people want to make their guests welcome and comfortable, and on a decent bed. With this in mind, we’ve

76

Interiors Monthly September 2018

developed two new collections that provide a comfortable place to stay both for the impromptu guest – with our bed in a box range – as well as for the

VIP visitor – with our new white Egyptian cotton offering.’ Shire Guest Beds includes a standard guest bed that can be used with a selection of open-coil bonnell and foam mattresses and a luxury guest bed where the underbed is the same size as the main bed, meaning extra space for visitors. This can be used with a range of pocket, bonnell and foam mattresses for additional comfort. ‘Both of these beds are made with carefully selected products and materials, and constructed in a way that means they are hardwearing but still offer superior comfort and look good. They also come in a range of fabric finishes to suit various decorating schemes.’ Last year saw the manufacturer celebrate 20 years in business, and this year Shire has invested heavily in new automated machinery to help speed up processes. The flow of the factory has also been re-engineered to improve throughput. The company has also transformed part of an old building into larger modern facilities for employees to use at break and social times. Visit: www.shirebeds.co.uk

Snuggle down Gallery Direct has significantly expanded its range Gallery Direct has created more than 160 soft furnishing products for its AW18 collection. Gallery’s Kilburn & Scott brand has been added to with more cushions, throws, doorstops and, new to Gallery and ready for winter, a selection of draught excluders. The new offering includes a collection made with pure wool that has been woven in the UK exclusively for Gallery, which features a traditional check pattern in autumnal colour palettes and complementary velvet trims. Doorstops also appear as a range of fun characters, including three festive styles: a checked robin with red Santa hat; a grey check reindeer with decorative tartan scarf and classic red nose, and a herringbone Christmas pudding topped with holly. Following the successful launch of its rug collection in January 2018, Gallery is introducing 23 more lines. The new range includes the Alonzo, which is a hand-loomed rug crafted using recycled materials in a multi-coloured palette. The Garcia is an eye-catching woven leather diamond design with a

monochrome ombre effect. Other additions to the soft furnishing catalogue include more occasional relaxed seating with a selection of pouffes and floor cushions, along with cushions and throws featuring faux fur, tactile textured fabrics and country-style designs. ‘We’re really excited about the new collection. The wide variety of products

are designed to suit different tastes and styles of interior. We’ve sourced a fantastic range of new fabrics, including beautiful checked wool woven in the UK,’ says Jayne Zalega, Gallery business development director for textiles. HIDES Sheepskins come from New Zealand or Australia

Reindeer hides are sourced from Finland

Beauty from afar Hanlin sources from across the globe Hanlin is a major worldwide wholesaler of cow hides, reindeer hides and sheepskin rugs and accessories from New Zealand, Australia, Finland and Iceland. Since its foundation in 1975 the family-owned business has become the first choice for countless companies. Hanlin sources the its full bovine cowhides from South America, handselecting each hide to guarantee quality. The spectacular markings of these unique pieces provide ideal natural coverings for stone and wooden floors. As with all natural hides and skins, you should expect to see some minor imperfections: these can include scarring, branding, stitching, small patched repairs and occasionally pit marks on the back of the hide. This is completely natural and should not be viewed as a defect. A range of printed, dyed and metallic finish cow hides are also available, adding a fresh and contemporary look. They are suitable for use as rugs, wall

hangings or furniture throws in any home or interior setting. The company has more than 6,000 cow hides to choose from and all can be individually viewed online. In addition to the selection of cow hides, Hanlin also stocks a range of sheepskins and sheepskin accessories such as rugs, hats and gloves. Every piece is sourced in New Zealand or Australia, and tanned in China for a luxuriously

The reindeer are bred by the Sami people who inhabit Lapland, the animals providing meat, milk and raw materials for clothes and tools. The reindeer are as important today to the Sami people’s culture and their existence as they ever were. Visit: www.hanlin.co.uk

Charging ahead The innovation is inside Jual’s latest designs

Jual is hoping its latest collection creates the same impact as its debut Curve occasional, home office and AV furniture did in 2010. This autumn sees the launch of San Francisco Smart, the range ostensibly featuring a simple yet stylish lamp and coffee table. The innovation, however, is all about what the lamp table offers on the inside. The JF710 San Francisco Smart lamp table features built-in wireless charging, two USB ports and Bluetooth compatible speakers. ‘With modern day lifestyles seeing the average person spending a substantial amount of time on their phone or tablet, it seems fitting that we launch a product that enables users to charge their phones wirelessly or via USB from the comfort of their armchair or sofa,’ says Alf Powell, Jual md. ‘It has been a challenging couple of months for most, and trying to remain positive was getting increasingly difficult: however this new range, along with some

exciting new designs in the pipeline, really have helped boost morale. ‘In fact we have had such a good response on the new smart lamp tables we have decided to launch bedside tables complete with wireless charging and Bluetooth technology.’ Jual took a prototype of the San Francisco Smart lamp table to the

Manchester Furniture Show and it received fantastic reviews from all areas of the trade, from independents to online retailers to national groups, adds Powell. The company will introduce the tables at the Autumn Furniture Show. Visit: www.jualfurnishings.co.uk

Natural riches 14 wood designs are being added to Art Select Karndean Designflooring is extending its Art Select wood collection with 14 new contemporary designs, including shades of French oak, hickory and American chestnut. Full of charm and character, Karndean’s Art Select wood collection is recognised for featuring beautiful and authentic timber effects, with intricate and realistic handcrafted embosses. An iconic choice for stylish interiors, Karndean’s oak flooring designs are a popular choice, thanks to the versatile colour and plank options on offer. Four new French oak designs – Mountain Oak, Glacier Oak, Savanna Oak and Prairie Oak – are now extending the range of hues available, including gentle beige, cool

grey and warm honey tones, which will blend seamlessly into decor styles from traditional country to modern industrial. Designed for consumers looking to add visual interest in open-plan spaces or to match flooring room to room, the new oak designs are available in a choice of extra-large plank (1,422mm x 228mm) and parquet format (457mm x 76mm) which can be used in different laying patterns, such as herringbone or at 45 degrees, to define separate living areas and create a sense of flow. Four new hickory designs – Natural Hickory, Weathered Hickory, Vintage Hickory and Classic Hickory – feature intense colour variation for a unique and elegant look, while an exclusive emboss

reproduces the subtle cross-sawn appearance and texture of the original unfinished planks. Featuring a bold pattern for impressive variation across the floor, home decorators can recreate a highly authentic, traditional look. While visiting historic barns and factories in the rural heart of North America, Karndean’s designers fell in love with the rustic feel and rich, warm tones of reclaimed chestnut. Faithfully replicating the array of cracks, worm holes and blemishes of aged timbers and exterior cladding, the new Reclaimed Chestnut and Salvaged Chestnut designs have a subtle matte finish for an eclectic, rustic appearance. Burford Twist

New chapter Victoria Carpets will debut products across three sectors ‘As we enter an exciting new chapter in what has been a challenging time for Victoria Carpets, we first of all want to thank all our approved retailers for their continued support during the changes we have made to improve our business and service to what is the lifeblood of Victoria Carpets: the independent retailer’, says James Caldwell, Victoria Carpets sales director. After the restructuring of key elements in various areas of the business, including manufacturing, Caldwell says the company can now look forward to a clear focus on giving its customers great and reliable service alongside value and quality products to hit key consumer price points, while never giving up on

quality which is paramount to the brand. ‘Retailers attending the show will no doubt welcome our new position in Hall A on stand A13/A21, as we believe this new chapter requires a new stand and a focus on key products. We have designed an elegant stand to do justice to this prominent position and once again our brand. All of this allows us to feature not one but three stunning new products and our up-to-the-minute POS. ‘Our main launch is Arcadia, a 10th gauge 40oz EasiCare polyester range with that pinpoint look that Victoria has become known for in its wool blend products and in our flagship polypropylene range First Impressions. So as we build to the family of EasiCare

polyester ranges such as Shimmer and Celestial, Arcadia will be also be presented in nine on-trend greys and subtle taupes in 4m and 5m widths.’ He says its successful polypropylenes have not been forgotten, with the introduction of the aggressively priced Wentworth Twist and Wentworth Saxony, in seven colours and 4m and 5m widths. ‘We haven’t forgot our roots and will be showing a new 80/20 wool-mix product in Burford Twist. This has 11 subtle heather shades on a fine point 50oz cloth in 4m and 5m widths.’ Visitors will also be able to see Victoria’s new online ordering and stock checking system U2V. Passionate about protection Protect and Care gives Stroolmount a new look The flooring and furniture protection company Stroolmount is introducing updated packaging, new POS display stands and a new-look website. The company’s products are being repositioned under the Protect and Care brand. ‘The heart logo in the middle of the Protect and Care name symbolises our passionate commitment to providing proven products to keeping flooring and furniture looking its best. We also wanted to give clients maximum flexibility to create their own label versions,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount director. ‘In a smart neutral grey colour the new packaging won’t clash with but rather complement any colour scheme that you have in your showroom. Alternatively, you could have it in a different shade and create it as your own brand. You can put your company colours, name, logo, website and even your own photograph onto the packaging alongside the Protect and Care logo. This then becomes your standard own label packaging,’ Finch says. ‘It’s so easy and convenient. Retailers only pay for 1,000 pieces of their ownlabel packaging upfront. Then from that 1,000, you can just order whatever product you want, be it self-adhesive felt or Teflon glides, or maybe some Quickclick glides or castor cups, pipe

It has eight display hooks. One side shows the three main flooring types that it benefits: carpets, hard flooring and LVT. On the other side it shows the main furniture types: chairs, tables, sofas and furniture. ‘We all know that floorspace is precious, so there’s also an acrylic wall stand to sell the Protect and Care range. Strong, durable and beautifully clear, each wall stand has six display hooks.’ Bespoke displays can be created by

Five alive

Think Rugs will debut a quintet of new ranges

Think Rugs is happy to announce the launch of its 2019 brochure that will be debuted at show. The company has been working hard on a selection of new ranges – Repreve, Boho, Havana, Navajo and Morocco – as well as many additions to a number of established ranges. The pile in the Repreve recycled shaggy is 100% recycled polyester made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Each square metre of product saves more than 100 plastic bottles from entering landfill or incineration. The exciting and extensive Boho range consists of five on-trend designs, all of which take inspiration from the Moroccan Beni Ourain style. The Boho range is available in a large selection of colours, meaning that there are over 25 different options available. Made with 100% treated soft polypropylene and

finished with fringes, the Boho range gives an authentic feel. Colourful and fun, the Havana range exudes personality and creativity. The playful range takes inspiration from ongoing tropical trends. Made with 100% polypropylene and hand carved, the range is not only highly durable but also great quality. Machine-made with a combination of flat weave and shaggy pile, the Navajo range takes inspiration from traditional

tribal patterns and textures. Made with 100% polypropylene, Navajo rugs add style and substance to any room, with the added benefits of durability and stain resistance. Influenced by the Moroccan Beni Ourain design that originates from the Atlas Mountains, the Morocco range offers fabulous style and sumptuous feel thanks to being tufted with a soft microfibre acrylic yarn. PREVIEW Window blinds have proved to be good sellers for flooring retailers

Time to diversify Made to measure window blinds can lift sales ‘Rol-lite Blinds is delighted to again be exhibiting at the show. We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to visit our stand over previous years and welcome any new visitors to our stand this time around,’ says Paul Swanson, Rol-lite marketing manager. ‘Many of the carpet and flooring specialists we have met at past exhibitions have gone on to successfully diversify into made to measure window blinds. We fully understand that this is one of the most challenging decisions a company can confront: whether or not to diversify. ‘Fortunately, we are well equipped to provide all of the resources they may require to help make this type of venture a success. Everything from free product

108

Interiors Monthly September 2018

and surveying training at our premises in Cheshire to low-cost sample packages can be provided to help reduce the risk factor involved. There are also many similarities in offering flooring and window blinds as the products are best sold in the home, much of the surveying equipment is the same and both involve selling from pattern books.’ Benefits of adding window blinds to a product range include: blinds block UV to help protect furniture and carpets from fading; blinds can match or contrast with new carpet and flooring colours to tremendous visual effect, and blinds can provide a great source of additional income often at a low price compared with that of new carpets or flooring.

‘The decision to diversify into window blinds should not be taken lightly: however, we are well equipped here at Rol-lite to help make the decision not so much of a roll of the dice. Our field-based area managers can provide guidance in terms of showroom displays and the best blind types to offer initially,’ says Swanson. ‘Our experienced in-house technical support team are also on hand to assist with any surveying and installation queries to help make blinds a profitable part of their business. Research we conducted in-house found that our carpet and flooring specialist retail customers actually sell more blinds than our soft furnishing specialist customers.’ Visit: www.rol-lite.co.uk

SHOW GUIDE The mobile design studio

On the move Members continue to take advantage of the mobile design studio Created in 1979, Metro Group is a buying group that represents independent flooring retailers. For more than 20 years the group has also recognised the importance of assisting retailers in marketing the products they sell. Metro constantly looks for ways to support retailers and the sale of not only own-label products but also any products to help members make a profit. Metro’s marketing service in 2018 is at its most comprehensive with a dedicated marketing team that not only assists with flooring displays but also any possible project that a retailer may wish to undertake. From a label to a poster,

Floorking in Antrim received new vehicle graphics

all printwork is designed and produced in-house at subsidised rates, covering almost anything a member requires. Metro’s members are spread across the entire UK and work has been carried out from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland. In one trip in the last month, the marketing team delivered eight Carpet 1st lecterns to Seymour Dugan in Lisburn, followed by a site survey for a return visit to design and rebrand a new dedicated showroom area. The same day, work was carried out at Carpet Centre in Londonderry where 18 windows, 1m x 1m, were covered in

Contravision to advertise a new IFC promotion. Contravision is especially effective because it is viewable from the outside of the window but still allows approximately 80% of the natural light through. The following day Floorking in Antrim was visited and new vehicle graphics applied using a combination of cut vinyl and Contravision for the windows. Most of the prep work is carried out in Metro’s own studio before fitting on site using its own access equipment. From a price card to a full size sign, Metro does it all. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

SHOW GUIDE The company has a fleet of more than 60 vehicles

Pioneer Cormar has a new look Sixty-two years on from when Neville Cormack first started manufacturing tufted carpet in a 5,000sqft mill in the Rossendale Valley, deep in the heart of Lancashire, Cormar Carpet Company remains one of the success stories of the British carpet industry. It is also the only surviving pioneer of the revolutionary production process that made fitted carpet an affordable home comfort for ordinary people. With a long-held reputation for innovation and customer service and an unrivalled number of awards and accolades recognising its service to the industry, Cormar continues to go from

strength to strength. In addition to its two production plants in Bury, Cormar opened the doors to a 130,000sqft distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead earlier this year. The multi-million pound infrastructure houses two state-of-the-art cut-length machines and a sortation system, further consolidating and strengthening its national distribution network across the south of England. Today Cormar employs more than 250 people and has its own fleet of over 60 vehicles delivering daily to retailers, contractors and wholesalers throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. This summer the company underlined its commitment to the future of the brand and its specialism in the home interest sector when it unveiled its first updated look in more than a quarter of a century. The new brand image – accompanied by the launch of a new website – illustrates the company’s

determination to take the business forward as a dynamic and leading-edge player in the UK carpet industry. ‘While we may have a new identity, we are still maintaining the company’s core values: family owned and British made. The brand will continue to be supported with high-performing products, excellent customer service and an efficient delivery service,’ says David Cormack, Cormar marketing director. As one of the leaders in residential wool and polypropylene carpet manufacturing, Cormar has also been working hard this year to further expand its portfolio and push the boundaries in carpet style. The latest addition to the company’s easy-clean family is the Apollo Comfort range, made with a new softer Excellon polypropylene fibre. It is also in the process of re-launching the Home Counties Plains wool twist range. Visit www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

Natural union Mattressgard is targeting a new consumer market ‘Mattress manufacturers have done a fantastic job over the past few years in developing a diverse range of mattresses that suit the most demanding and discerning of consumers. The innovation that has led to hi-tech foams, multiple spring units, hybrid products and attractive and durable fabric ticking has been nothing short of brilliant,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. Simultaneously, the same manufacturers working with retailers and the NBF have gone to great lengths to promote the understanding of sleep and the importance of the correct mattress, he says. This has increased professionalism in the sector, and sales in the bedding sector over the last few years have shown tremendous growth. ‘Until Mattressgard entered the market the same could not be said for mattress

protectors: they were much maligned and often either missed off the salesperson’s pitch entirely or introduced as an afterthought. “It’s only a mattress protector” echoed around many retail floors as the importance was not fully recognised and the consumer’s needs were not catered for. Consumers now recognise that the budget, lightly quilted polyester or polycotton mattress protector of old has had its day and retailers have been quick to captitalise on this and the additional sales opportunity presented by having the right products for these more demanding consumers. ‘A retailer recently said to me: “What a shame to spoil a beautiful mattress with a sub-standard mattress protector: it doesn’t even prevent fluids from leaking through.’’ Thanks to Mattressgard and our innovative approach to mattress protection such

comments are consigned to history as retailers and consumers alike recognise the quality and performance of Mattressgard products. By harnessing the most natural products such as Tencel, cotton and bamboo and combining them with polyester and the most technologically advanced impermeable yet breathable polyurethane membranes, a union between nature and science has been created to provide the best protection products available. ‘The range includes the revolutionary Sleepcool combining Tencel with PCM, the Thermal Intelligence system. This amazing product benefits from the integration of thousands of intelligent thermoregulating microcapsules that work in harmony with the body to regulate temperature during sleep,’ says Aiston. did this for 40 years. That’s an awful lot of research and development. So, before it is all boxed up and forgotten about in some darkened store, we decided to act,’ says Paul Bakker, WoolSafe chairman and ITFA co-founder. ‘We have contacted an elite few textile scientists and technical experts from several key areas of carpet manufacture and have collected, catalogued, edited and made available to students online much of that research and technical treasure trove. We have, and will continue to, develop training courses and technical information and we believe we now have a unique and most comprehensive offering.’ CFJ publisher Kick-Start Publishing will highlight its The Specifier’s Guide to Flooring, providing a specification tool for architects, designers, facilities managers and specifiers on all aspects of flooring. The guide explores key materials, from carpet to vinyl, ancillary products and accessories – and everything in between – and includes industry commentary and technical analysis. Pro-Tek will debut its WPC nextgeneration engineered vinyl flooring. Five collections offer a total of 40 designs, in wood and tile effects, with matching four-sided bevelled edges and a range of matching WPC vinyl-wrapped accessories. The new waterproof WPC

floor is a phthalate-free wood plastic composition design measuring 7mm to 8.5mm in thickness and comprising six individual layers. The durable commercial-grade wear-resistant layer is 0.7mm thick, with a UV anti-scratch finish. Below the fade-resistant decor layer and luxury vinyl top layer, a highly stable and 100% waterproof core – with glueless locking system – sits above an IXPE foam underlay base. It can be laid over most existing hard floorcoverings and is compatible with wet underfloor heating systems. RFMS-UK will showcase the latest updates to its software. Measure and Measure Mobile enables retailers and estimators to create simple, quick and accurate quotes for their customers and these quotes may be exported directly into the back-office Order Entry system to allow seamless processing of the estimates without the need for re-entering customer or product information. According to the company there is a five-fold increase in the productivity of the estimation process using these tools. The fully integrated nature of the system with its own in-built accounting system means the elimination of duplicate financial postings. The RFMS Core software provides control of orders

and stock, with additional modules available to handle job scheduling and customer relationship management. TCS will have its top-selling collections on display alongside a dozen new collections available in up to 12 colours. These have been tufted exclusively for TCS. Its 12mm laminate will see the introduction of register-embossed light and dark grey boards. Everything at the show has been designed around key price points for independent retailers with the ability to order full rolls or cut lengths in 4m or 5m widths. Also on show will be new spacesaving floor and wall stands alongside details of its geographical exclusivity. Windmöller will show its laminate, LVT and Purline organic flooring under its wineo brand. Purline is a polyurethane floor featuring Ecuran, a composite material that is manufactured primarily from plant-based oils such as canola or castor oil and naturally occurring mineral components such as chalk. It will also highlight its digital printing technologies. WoolSafe will be showing the carpet care advice iFrames spot removal videos and spot removal app as well as demonstrating how easy it is to remove common household spills from wool carpet. Manchester Furniture Show Manchester Central

REVIEW Jude

Lilly

Summer time

Sunshine and sporting finals could not deter visitors ‘As a known sun worshipper I have selfishly relished every sunny weekend of this glorious summer, but always lurking in the back of my mind was the knowledge that people shop less for furniture when the sun comes out. Dare I say that it’s time for the typical British summer weather to return and bring consumers back to our retail stores,’ says Nichola Bell, Westbridge Furniture sales director. ‘It was with slight uncertainty that we exhibited at the Manchester Furniture Show, knowing that we had all the ingredients for a quiet show – good weather, Wimbledon men’s final, World Cup final and more Brexit uncertainties. We didn’t let it put us off and built a fabulous stand and designed three new ranges ready for our customers. I was extremely pleased that my concerns

140

Interiors Monthly September 2018

were unfounded as we had a very successful show, actually topping last year’s performance. It was a delight to see many of our loyal customers especially those that had travelled some distance from Scotland and Ireland to support the show,’ adds Bell. Jude is a fully modular corner group offered in a soft handled pastel story. It offers the flexibility for customers to customise the sofas to their unique home requirements. A choice of different seat interiors allows the customer to choose their comfort along with more than 80 fabrics. ‘With great proportions, comfort and style Harrison provides an opportunity for volume sales while Lilly is the bestseller from the Elements range and is popular due to its perfect proportions,

offering a slim arm and ample seating space. It features five sizes of sofa, chaise, corner and sofabed options and is a popular choice for apartments, holiday homes and smaller spaces,’ says Bell. ‘MFS has proven to be a successful show for us and it was great to see Midpoint exhibitors there this year. I would like to thank our customers for their continued support and we promise to keep bringing you more exciting and commercial products. Alas, it seems the weather has finally changed and our retailers are seeing an increase in footfall so we are gearing up for a lovely busy autumn season. ‘A selection of Westbridge product will next be available to view at Longpoint and the South West Furniture Show.’ Visit: www.wesbridgefurniture.com

Alpha Designs’ Jaipur, which features a choice of fabric on the inside and velvet on the outside or vice versa, was one of four product introductions

Ashley Manor introduced a number of curved models while expanding its fabric offer on some models such as Hetty (pictured)

Whitemeadow’s introductions included a pocket sprung Hypnos mattress for its 12 new sofabeds

La-Z-Boy UK debuted upholstery alongside bed frames and four mattresses as it promoted the message of ‘Live life comfortably – night and day’. Pictured is the Winchester corner unit.

Gallery Direct used the show to introduce its latest beds catalogue and new fabric options

Calligaris’ Stellar tables are available in several leg finishes with wood or ceramic marble-effect tops
