EDITOR’S COMMENT

The decline of a market leader In 2008 Carpetright made a profit of £62m. Now it needs a CVA and tens of millions of shareholder funds I asked in the February issue if there would be any good news for Carpetright shareholders. The answer has been an unequivocal no. Its third profits warning in three months spooked investors, sending the share price down by more than a third on 1 March. It has continued to fall since the group confirmed it was looking at a Company Voluntary Agreement to ditch unwanted stores and cut its rents. Landlords look likely to be feeling the pain as well as shareholders. It is paying almost £2m to secure a £12.5m loan and then wants to raise £40m-£60m from shareholders after the CVA. Some might consider that bold given its stock market value has fallen to £26.47m. The reason for this predicament? ‘The aggressive store opening strategy pursued by the company’s previous leadership,’ said Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo. If the chain was able to reduce its rent bill by a quarter through store closures, that could save it in the region of £20m a year, plus whatever reductions were agreed for the branches that remained. Walsh has said when a store is closed the nearest one recovers 40% of sales, so Carpetright could make about £20m a year from sales of £389m. Shareholders may find that more appealing than the current situation. It also leaves about £70m of sales looking for a home. Online mattress retailer Eve says it is on course to make a profit in the UK and Republic of Ireland by the end of the year, and in the rest of Europe by the end of 2019. It had better hope that its marketing delivers quicker than that. Last year it spent £17.2m on marketing to generate £27.7m of sales and a pre-tax loss of £19m. If it continues to spend at that rate, by my reckoning, it has just under 19 months of cash, and that is ignoring staff costs. Will it be forced to turn to shareholders to keep going before any profits start to kick in?

NEWS

Carpetright considers CVA to boost turnaround plan Carpetright is looking to a Company Voluntary Agreement to offload underperforming stores and cut its rent bill before asking shareholders to invest more than its stock market value to bolster its finances. In its third profits warning in less than three months, on 1 March it warned that it would make a loss for the year to 28 April with UK like for like sales still falling. On 12 December it had forecast profits of about £12.8m, but revised this to £2m on 19 January. The group has raised a £12.5m short-term unsecured loan from shareholder Meditor European Master Fund until 31 August with an interest rate of 3%. Carpetright is paying a £496,000 fee and issuing £1.379m worth of shares to Meditor, which will own 5% of Carpetright. In a clear indication that the group sees a CVA as its only option, Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo, said: ‘Following the CVA, the company intends to raise between £40m and £60m through an equity release.’ This compares with its stock market value of £26.47m. It also wants to relax its banking covenants and extend its overdraft. ‘I am pleased that we have secured this additional support from one of our major shareholders as we continue to explore the feasibility of a CVA and a conditional equity issue. These further cash resources will enable us to make the necessary decisions free from short-term funding pressure,’ said Walsh. ‘The aggressive store opening strategy pursued by the company’s previous leadership has left Carpetright burdened with an oversized property estate consisting of too many poorly located stores on rents which are simply unsustainable.’ Walsh said the legacy issue had been addressed, wanting to reduce its property estate, but many of the poor performing stores have long leases to run, limiting its ability to exit a meaningful number in the short to medium term.

Since the 1 March profit warning, shares have more than halved

‘While the board is confident that its brand investment and store refurbishment strategies have been, and will continue to be, successful in enabling Carpetright to respond to increased competition, it believes additional measures are necessary to directly address this legacy property issue. The board is therefore exploring the feasibility of a CVA in order to expedite the rationalisation of its property portfolio, with the clear objective of establishing a right-sized estate of contemporary stores, on economic rents, complemented with a compelling online offer. ‘The conditional equity issue, which is intended to follow a successful CVA, would recapitalise the group and we believe provide the necessary funds to accelerate its turnaround and address the competitive threat from a position of financial strength,’ added Walsh.

Machin quits Steinhoff to be M&S food boss

Harveys and Bensons boss Stuart Machin is leaving to join Marks & Spencer. Machin, who joined as Steinhoff UK ceo in July, is to head up Marks & Spencer’s food division at the end of April. ‘We face challenges in our food business and we have lots to do to change, fast. Stuart is an excellent addition to our team. He gets food retailing and he has first class experience

4

of driving change in big food retailers,’ said Steve Rowe, Marks & Spencer chief executive. ‘My heart lies in food retail,’ said Machin. ‘The business has many reasons to be proud of its food offer but there are also opportunities and lots to deliver under the transformation plan Steve has laid out.’ Machin worked for Homebase parent Wesfarmers running department store

chain Target in Australia from July 2013 to February 2016 and was a director of supermarket chain Coles in Australia from August 2008 to July 2013. He began his career as a management trainee at Sainsbury’s in 1988, becoming retail operations director in 2003, then moved on to Tesco as Tesco Extra stores director and then operations director, fresh foods. He joined Asda as operations director before moving to Australia.

Beast from the East and Storm Emma hit ScS sales ScS has blamed the Beast from the East and Storm Emma for a significant drop in sales. Like for like orders fell by 5.3% in the seven weeks to 17 March. ScS said this was ‘principally’ due to the country being hit by snow in late February and that trading in the other six weeks had been in line with 2017. In the six months to 27 January sales rose by 1.5% to £168.4m. A pre-tax loss of £2.6m became a profit of £200,000. The chain said upholstery sales at ScS rose by 2% to £130.1m; flooring sales were up 5.7% to £21.3m; online

sales lifted by 11.3% to £6m while its House of Fraser sales dropped 14.2% to £11m. Sales of warranties increased from £9.88m to £10.75m. Average upholstery orders rose from £1,571 to £1,610 while average flooring orders were up from £643 to £676. But, sales per sqft at ScS stores dropped from £109 to £108. l John Lewis said sales fell by 14.4% as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma deterred and prevented consumers from shopping. Sales fell by £11.58m in the week to 3 March, compared to the week to 4 March in 2017, when sales were £80.4m.

Essex will be home to second Silentnight store Silentnight is to open a second retail showroom, with a 4,800sqft unit in the Lakeside shopping centre, Essex. It follows a year of trading at the Trafford Centre, Manchester. ‘By opening our second flagship showroom at Lakeside, we’re enabling customers in the South East to explore

and experience our full range of beds, mattresses and sleep accessories,’ said Steve Freeman, Silentnight md. ‘This is a great marketing opportunity for us and has so far been really successful at the Trafford Centre, where we’ve trialled innovations. Furthermore, it has also benefited our retail partners

who have enjoyed returns from the increased consumer demand and awareness the showroom has created. It enables us to trial new products, new display methods and selling techniques; the results of which we share with all our retail partners, many of whom are now adopting some of the learnings.’

End for Ryalux Airea is to close its loss-making residential carpet manufacturing subsidiary Ryalux to concentrate on the contract sector. The group has begun a consultation with the company’s 50 staff and expects it to close by the end of April. Ryalux made an operating loss of £3.1m from sales of £9.9m in the 18 months to 31 December 2017.

Bigger Loaf Shire tackles sport again: The Shire Bed Company has committed to a second year of its sponsorship deal with rugby league team and 2017 Super League champions, Leeds Rhinos. The partnership will allow the bed manufacturer to continue its Sleep4Sport project and further develop its collection of professional mattresses offering the rest and recovery benefits critical to elite sports players. The agreement will also allow Shire Beds to strengthen its relationship with the team’s physios, coaches and players. ‘We’re delighted to continue our support for Leeds Rhinos and look forward to developing our relationship with the team and our joint Sleep4Sport project,’ said Fara Butt, The Shire Bed Company marketing director. Established in 1997, the same year that the club became Leeds Rhinos, the bed manufacturer is also a sponsor of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Mattress retailer Eve Sleep says it is on course to make a profit in the UK and Republic of Ireland by the end of the year, despite group losses increasing by almost £8m. Pre-tax losses rose from £11.33m to £18.97m. ‘In what is just our third year of operation we have more than doubled sales and driven substantial improvement in gross margins while raising £35m of growth capital from our listing on AIM. Our progress was strong in H1, and accelerated further in H2, giving a full year growth rate of +132%. This step up in growth was evident in the UK and our international markets and was secured in tandem with a further and substantial improvement in marketing efficiency,’ said Jas Bagniewski, Eve ceo. He said a sizeable business is being built across Europe that it believes will continue to win market share from traditional operators as the £26bn sleep market continues to transition online. ‘Our results to date demonstrate that we have a winnable customer proposition in both the UK and Continental Europe and have a management team that can execute. We are still targeting to achieve UK profitability at the end of 2018 and group profitability by the end of 2019,’ added Bagniewski.

The right fit It is essential to solve issues before delivering the goods As I watch from across the road I am sure I can feel the slight rumble of George turning in his grave. We’d had some great delivery drivers over the years. Kevin always had a broad smile across his ruddy face, usually glistening from exertion. Goes with the job, we used to think. Then he eloped with the girl from the china and glass department. Soon John joined us; a part-time firefighter filling in between his shifts. He was always tired. We learned later that he was full-time. He had been trying to hold down two jobs. Barry was ex-military. He gave the orders and we complied to avoid any disruption to the delivery schedules. It was during his time that the van caught fire on the way to a customer’s house. He thought he was popular because we were too afraid to tell him otherwise. And that led to George. Former removal man. He could walk round a

house and tell you how much lorry space would be needed for the contents. He could judge whether an item of furniture would fit up the stairs without trying it (I’m convinced he topped up with just enough pasties every day to ensure his measuring device kept working). If George said: ‘It won’t fit’ we had to find another way to deliver the goods. I was the go-to problem solver. Remove the sash window? I’ll go and get my toolbox. Sofa won’t fit? If I just do this we can get the arms off and put them back on in the house. Wall unit too big? Yes, once I even carefully took apart the central joints to reduce the size and then reassembled the unit, touching up the damaged veneer and finish to the customer’s complete satisfaction. It was more common to be hauling rolls of carpet up flights of stairs, or loading a lift on the ground floor and running up to meet it. Occasionally George set up ladders and ropes and the

precious delivery was hauled up and through a window. No amount of puffing and panting made George any slimmer. Now I am standing and staring. I am in Barcelona, a city set out on a grid system where every private home is a flat and every ground floor property is a business. A furniture delivery lorry has pulled up and behind it a scissor lift. In no time at all the furniture is on the lift, then raised to the right balcony and into the flat without fuss. Using the right tools for the job isn’t just a health and safety issue. It’s a message to our customers that we’re professional at what we do. I’m sure many customers were impressed with George’s efforts, but seeing the job done so quickly and easily with the right equipment is far more impressive to me. PROTECTION

Press on with the GDPR

Rules on how personal data is handled are changing The aim of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is to protect all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world. From 25 May it applies to all companies processing and holding the personal data of people residing in the EU, regardless of the company’s location. The UK government has indicated it will implement equivalent or alternative legal mechanisms post-Brexit. ‘Controllers’ and ‘processors’ of data need to abide by the GDPR. A data controller states how and why personal data is processed, while a processor is the party doing the actual processing of the data. So the controller could be any organisation, from a profit-seeking company to a charity or government. A processor could be the company performing data processing. Organisations in breach of GDPR can be fined up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20m, whichever is greater. This is the maximum fine that can be imposed for the most serious infringements, for example not having sufficient customer consent to process data or violating the core of Privacy by Design concepts. There is a tiered approach to fines: a company can be fined 2% for not having its records in order, not notifying the supervising authority and data subject about a breach or not conducting impact assessment. Conditions for consent have been strengthened and companies will no

26

Interiors Monthly April 2018

Consent must be provided in an easily accessible way

longer be able to use long illegible terms and conditions full of legalese, as the request for consent must be given in an intelligible and easily accessible form, with the purpose for data processing attached to that consent. Consent must be clear and distinguishable from other matters and provided using clear and plain language. It must be as easy to withdraw consent as it is to give it. Where a data breach is likely to ‘result in a risk for the rights and freedoms of individuals’, notification must happen within 72 hours of first having become aware of the breach. Citizens have the right to know whether or not personal data concerning them is being processed, where and for what purpose. The controller shall provide a copy of the personal data, free of charge, in an electronic format. Citizens are also entitled to have the data controller erase their personal data, cease further dissemination of the data,

and potentially have third parties halt processing of the data. Conditions include the data no longer being relevant to original purposes for processing, or a withdrawal of consent. Privacy by design as a concept has existed for years , but it is only just becoming part of a legal requirement with the GDPR. At its core it calls for the inclusion of data protection from the onset of the designing of systems, rather than an addition. Specifically: ‘The controller shall implement appropriate technical and organisational measures in an effective way in order to meet the requirements of this Regulation and protect the rights of data subjects’. Controllers should hold and process only the data absolutely necessary for the completion of its duties as well as limiting the access to personal data to those needing to act out the processing. Halo effect Customer service can boost future sales Delivering an exceptional service experience for consumers creates a halo effect for retailers, according to David Evans, Guardsman sales director. ‘The halo effect we generate is evidenced by our service excellence and ever-increasing Trustpilot score (8.2 from 377 reviews). We know that the high quality service we provide through our furniture protection plans (FPP) business has a direct and positive reflection for our retailers. We have seen major retailers extending their business with us on the basis of this positive experience, which in turn encourages repeat custom in furniture sales,’ he says. Pauline Chiverton, Guardsman head of operations, says: ‘When it comes to the level of customer service given by their FPP provider, retailers shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than outstanding. Our retailers trust us with their customers, and we work hard to ensure that we deliver the very best service experience to reflect well on their retail brand.’ There are many issues for retailers selling insurance backed programmes such as FPPs, as it is a highly regulated financial product. Phil Griffin, Guardsman md, says the company can interpret and simplify

28

Interiors Monthly April 2018

Above: The customer service provided by FPP providers reflects on retailers Right: Furniture protection plans give consumers piece of mind

complex regulatory processes to support and unlock this profitable and attractive consumer proposition. ‘A challenging market? Changing regulations? A weak economy? With 100 years of experience, we know exactly how to support retailers to not only survive, but to thrive in the most challenging trading conditions,’ he says. ‘Our combination of expertise and passion for delivering an exceptional service makes us the perfect partner for retailers who are facing uncertain times.

‘It would be easy to be negative at a time of uncertainty driven by Brexit and the ever-changing regulatory environment. However, we remain confident that we can keep ahead of all this and continue to lead the market, supporting retailers and their customers with the very best furniture repair products and services. For us 2018 is set to be a challenging but successful year, where we will see significant sales growth for us and our retail partners,’ adds Griffin. Guardsman, tel: 01235 444 700

Every step Castelan will support clients through regulatory changes

This year will see changes in regulation that will have an impact on us all, but ‘Castelan stands ready to support our clients and their customers every step of the way,’ says Stuart Armstrong, Castelan finance director. The General Data Protection Regulation covers the way in which individual’s information is looked after comes into effect on 25 May and the Insurance Distribution Directive which covers the information given to a customer at the point of sale comes into force on 1 October 2018. As an FCA regulated business, it takes implementation of legislation seriously and is applying significant resources to it. ‘We have a dedicated, employed compliance manager who is already supporting a number of clients through these processes, and we will be providing information to our whole client base as appropriate,’ he says. Armstrong stresses that it is imperative a constant focus on the regulatory environment is maintained to protect this valuable product for the customer and secondary income stream for its clients. ‘We view our schemes as a whole package: a dedicated team of colleagues giving sales support, compliance support, administration, claims handling and a fully employed team of technicians

Castelan is looking to allow policy-holders to do more online

in the network to deliver first class repair solutions – all backed and underwritten in full by insurers. This along with a first class range of retail care products mean we believe it’s a package that our clients and their customers can have real confidence in,’ he says. The company is also looking to update how it deals with policy-holders, moving certain aspects online.

‘Our in-house IT development teams are creating online systems that will make it so much easier for the customer to make a claim, book an appointment or simply make changes to their policy documentation. This will align our model to what are considered to be normal methods of communication with today’s consumers,’ adds Armstrong. Visit: www.castelangroup.com

PROTECTION

Help is at hand Avoid damaging furniture and flooring Stroolmount has helped retailers, manufacturers, installers and the hospitality trade protect their furniture and floors since 2007 with its range of accessories. ‘The trade and customers invest a fortune in fine quality furniture and flooring, so it makes sense to spend a few pence to protect it and to create genuine customer goodwill. We’ve saved companies thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims with simple solutions costing as little as 1p,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount director. ‘It’s peace of mind protection that pays dividends.’ A Stroolmount client had a call from a hotel, saying staff found it hard to move the heavy bedside cabinets to clean the room and the uneven floors meant both the carpet and the cabinets could get damaged. Could anyone help? ‘So we developed height adjustable glides allowing them to both move the heavy furniture easily and protect the floor,’ says Finch. Stroolmount is a one-stop solutions shop. So when people wanted a way to move heavy recliner chairs and sofas, Stroolmount came to the rescue. ‘We developed Furni-Glide Recliner Cups by adapting our screw-in FurniGlides that already easily slide very heavy furniture across carpet. Staingard enjoyed ‘a sensational’ January Furniture Show

Innovative care Staingard has formed a record number of retail partnerships this year Staingard had ‘a sensational January Furniture Show and follow up has seen the demand for the expertise and passion that is in the Staingard DNA in great demand,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. The show was a fitting end to another year of growth for the care plan and protection provider with a record number of new retail partnerships formed and the launch of several product ranges. ‘We work very closely with our retail partners through our field sales team and are constantly working on ways to provide them with additional ways of increasing margins and improving customer service. Furniture is in our blood. We have the most experienced team in our sector, and that is reflected in the enduring partnerships we have forged since we started the business in 2006,’ says Aiston. Staingard is a family business, with

34

Interiors Monthly April 2018

Aiston’s sons James and Tom an integral part of the business and gearing up to take over in the future. Many of Staingard’s customers are themselves family businesses and the shared culture this creates provides confidence that they are building for the future and not just short-term prospects. ‘There is no doubt that the market for insured care plans and the associated protection products have evolved enormously over the past 20 years, however, it is Staingard’s flexibility and innovation that has propelled us to lead the way. Having the ability to change is one thing, but having the desire and drive to do so is another,’ says Aiston. Staingard continues to innovate and is constantly introducing products and service developments. ‘The product range offered by Staingard is the most comprehensive on the market and the commitment and flexibility that is an integral part of the

company culture ensures that the time taken from idea to market is short. Staingard has the largest field sales team in its sector and this means that customer contact is never compromised,’ he says. ‘Our proposition is also enhanced by our perpetual development in systems and compliance and this will become even more apparent in the coming year as all retailers gear up to meet the challenges of the General Data Protection Regulation and Insurance Distribution Directive. ‘GDPR will affect the way data is handled and used and IDD will ensure that the sales process on insured products is tightened up leading to less chances of miss-selling. We are ahead of the curve on this and we will work very closely with all our retail partners to minimise any disruption and ensure compliance,’ adds Aiston Email: sales@staingard.co.uk

LVT can transform a bathroom ‘When it comes to bathrooms it makes sense to have a space that is, first and foremost, functional. Karndean Designflooring is a smart, effective choice for bathroom flooring, providing home decorators with the ultimate protection from splashes and spills. LVT is also practical for everyday use, easy to clean, and perfect for recreating the latest trends,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national sales manager. Choosing Karndean means that consumers can have a beautiful looking floor that they only need to treat to a simple mop and sweep every now and again to keep it fresh and germ free, she says. A popular flooring choice for bathrooms is real stone tiles, but they usually come hand in hand with grout lines, which attract mildew. This can be difficult to clean without harsh chemicals, which is certainly not ideal for a home with young children or pets.

36

Interiors Monthly April 2018

‘With Karndean, it’s possible to achieve a beautiful straight lay or brick bond tile effect with our design strips, which can be used to recreate the grouting effect. The days of scrubbing between the tiles with a toothbrush are long gone, as the strips are cut to the same thickness as the floor of choice, creating a seamless surface with no grime or dirt traps. Karndean is also fully waterproof and won’t swell, crack or warp when it’s wet, and our products are also highly slipresistant,’ says Coyle. Occasionally bathrooms can be on the small side compared to other rooms in the home, but there are plenty of ways to make the most of this space, regardless of its size. ‘It’s no secret that lighter colours make a room seem more airy and spacious, so you could encourage your customers towards a light tone flooring, such as our Korlok Texas White Ash or LooseLay Longboard Bleached Tasmanian Oak. Our

authentic wood designs look fantastic and have all the same practical benefits as our stone designs. If your customer is feeling concerned that pale colours could make the bathroom feel too clinical, reassure them that they can add pops of colour such as plants, towels and other small accessories,’ says Coyle. Karndean can be laid in various directions, and a diagonal format will trick the eyes into a different perspective, making the space feel larger. Alternatively, for a narrow yet long bathroom, the floor may be best laid parallel to the longest wall, as this will elongate the space and offer the best visual impact. Karndean’s augmented reality app shows how any of its floors will look in homes while its Style Finder online tool helps customers narrow down their choices after answering a few simple questions. Winning formula Mlily is prospering with its ethos of supporting retailers Mlily continues to go from strength to strength and its turnover cannot be understated amid the challenges of today’s marketplace. For the third consecutive year it has doubled its business and is looking forward to continued success in 2018. Besides a fruitful partnership with global brand Manchester United, what has led to the company’s winning formula? ‘It’s about relationships. The loyalty and support we show our retailers is unparalleled,’ says Bob Badman, Mlily director of sales. ‘People know we have great products now, and it’s about delivering that level of quality they have

come to expect at a price which maximises their margins.’ New to Mlily’s 2018 range is the Aria bed in a box that includes two free pillows and a simple, elegant look. It has also extended its Manchester United partnership with the new Premier Collection, using exclusive Hybrid Technology designed in collaboration with the Recovery & Regeneration Team at the club’s Aon Training Complex. By taking the products it has customised for United’s elite players and making those same benefits available to the general public, Mlily is doing all it can to redefine sleep across the UK.

‘We’ve got big plans for the partnership ahead,’ says Pomi Khan, Mlily UK ceo. ‘All of our mattresses are currently in player and coaching staff homes, and we’re looking to conduct further studies relating to sleep and performance in collaboration with United. As we continue to conduct research in this field, the fruits of our efforts will not only be reflected in the products United players use but also in the products we make available to everyone. It’s about helping people achieve peak performance wherever they are,’ adds Khan. Email: sales@mlily.uk

Giving more customers the option of choosing from its top of the range collection, the Octaspring 7500 has just been launched. This design offers a twolayer Octaspring mattress with an added layer of supportive latex on top of the

their craft career pathway. It funds the education of talented craftspeople through traditional college courses, apprenticeships and one-on-one training with master artisans. Since its inception, the charity has awarded more than £3.5m to some 400 gifted individuals, of whom around 90% are still practising their craft professionally. In 2014, QEST introduced an Apprenticeship Scheme, recently adding the QEST Craft Apprenticeship Hub, to help young people begin careers in craft as a viable alternative to a college/ university education.

QEST continues to reflect the excellence of British craftsmanship as symbolised by the Royal Warrant of Appointment. Last month QEST hosted its annual dinner at the Victoria & Albert Museum, at which 24 QEST scholars demonstrated their skills. An auction of pieces made by QEST alumni, as well as luxury handcrafted goods, bespoke tours and masterclasses, raised more than £150,000 which will go towards supporting the education and training of talented and aspiring craftspeople. Holders of Royal Warrants are part of an elite group of about 800 companies or individuals which are regular suppliers of goods and services to the households of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales. Over the centuries royal life and tastes changed. Henry VIII appointed Thomas Hewytt to ‘Serve the court with swannes and cranes’ and ‘all kinds of wildfoule’. The Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 was largely put together by royal tradesmen. Charles II’s 1684 list of royal tradesmen included a sword cutter and an operator for the teeth. Among the tradesmen supplying the royal household in 1789 were a pin maker, mole taker, card maker and a rat catcher. In the late 18th century royal tradesmen began displaying the royal arms on their premises and stationery, but it was Queen Victoria who ensured that Royal Warrants gained the prestige they enjoy today. During her 64-year reign more than 1,000 were granted, eight times as many as granted by the Queen’s uncle, George IV. They included companies such as Fortnum & Mason, Schweppes and Twinings, which still hold them today. Royal Warrants continue to be a prestigious mark of recognition to those supplying the three households and represent the widest cross-section of British trade and industry (there are also a small number of overseas companies) – from individuals practising traditional crafts to large firms equipped with the latest technology. Royal Warrants are automatically reviewed by the Lord Chamberlain’s committee a year before they are due to expire. As part of the review, companies must provide evidence of the goods and services they have supplied to the royal household over the previous five years. The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) was formed in 1990 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Royal Warrant Holders Association and the 90th birthday of The Queen Mother. QEST exists to help people of all ages and backgrounds at a critical stage in

Hypnos received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in 2017

Sign of trust Being a Royal Warrant holder is at the heart of Hypnos’ business ‘Holding a Royal Warrant is an incredibly prestigious and important accolade. Hypnos is an award-winning, familyrun, British bed manufacturer, with the Keen family having held a Royal Warrant since 1929. ‘We’re incredibly proud of the fact we not only supply the royal family, royal

Enterprise for International Trade in 2017. ‘It’s fair to say that the Royal Warrant, along with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, challenges us to be innovative and ensures we run the business in an ethical and sustainable way to really reinforce the strength of our offering. ‘The synergy between the Royal Warrant and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise have both played a pivotal role in breaking important international markets and given our retailers confidence that our products are of the finest quality and stand out against other manufacturers,’ explains Keen. Every bed Hypnos produces is created from the finest, natural and sustainable materials and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life, says Keen. All of these elements help it to meet the ever increasing and demanding sustainability criteria set to Royal Warrant holders by Prince Charles through the Business in the Community network, of which Hypnos is a member. ‘The Royal Warrant is an integral part of everything we do at Hypnos. It has shaped our past and it will continue to shape our future as we strive to be the best by making the most comfortable beds in the world and operating to the highest CSR and sustainability standards,’ adds Keen. RUGS SUNNY AND CALM Lígia Casanova designed the interiors of a duplex apartment in Lisbon demonstrating eclectic style. A two-storey shelving and storage unit with a sliding ladder frames the double height living room. A blue Rodas rug and Silaï in grey are placed in the centre of the space, its calming colours integrate with the walls while the Portuguese sunshine floods into the space through the balcony doors.

Finer details Even in the most beautiful homes, a rug can make a difference One of the most important rooms in a home is the living room, a space where we spend most of our time, where we entertain, and often dine. In terms of contemporary trends, the most common approach is to be eclectic, combining pieces of different styles, adding accessories and decor to create a warm ambience where we can feature the stories of our travels, family and friends. Rug manufacturer GAN found out how some of its designs were being used. Visit: www.gan-rugs.com ‚‚‚

KILIM SPACE The impact a simple rug can have is illustrated in a recent project by DM3 & Dimitri Pisarenko, in Tallin, Estonia. This living space is defined by its tall ceilings and generous spatial proportions. Siracusa and Palermo kilim rugs, both designed by Sandra Figuerola for GAN, attract attention and define the areas around which the furniture is organised, providing functionality and structure to the home. Their colourful geometric motifs unify the eclectic mixture of materials and furnishings.

MELLOW YELLOW The Living in Yellow project, by Lígia Casanova, is accommodated within a historical building. Its living room features four glazed door-height openings to the street, within a generous space that is defined by wooden floors and designer furniture elements such as Mangas Space created by Patricia Urquiola, and Knitted Stools created by Claire-Anne O’Brien for GAN. Here, the seating modules and rugs form an island at the centre of the space. Yellow is used as an accent colour throughout the apartment, and resonates with the more neutral palette used everywhere else.

BLURRED LINES The Mediterranean light is amplified with the inclusion of Canevas y Knotwork in this home in Israel, a house and garden designed by Levy Chamizer Architects, in a town near Tel Aviv. Boundaries between outdoor and indoor areas fade with the addition of the flowered Canevas rug by Charlotte Lancelot. Its abstract floral pattern recalls the vegetation that surrounds the whole house. Aram tables, designed by Nendo for GAN, pick up on the colour tones and continue to blur the indoor/outdoor boundary.

RUGS

Past to present Flair Rugs launches styles inspired by the V&A Flair Rugs has added four designs to its premium Luxmi collection as part of its ongoing collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum. Each rug is inspired by a different artefact from the V&A’s rich archive. With influences ranging from 19th century Chinese motifs to the glamorous age of Art Deco, the latest launches for this season showcase examples of exceptional design and craftsmanship. Phoenix, Moderne, Rhythm and Rosa are all available in three standard sizes of 120 x 170cm, 160 x 230cm and 200 x 290cm. The additions join existing V&A Inspired designs – Jazz, Honeysuckle, Fanfare and Rhapsody – in the Luxmi collection, creating a series of beautiful hand-made qualities inspired by the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. Visit: www.flairrugs.com

For Moderne, Flair Rugs has returned to designs of the Art Deco period, referencing bold, geometric forms in an archetypal brown and ochre colourway. Inspired by a 1930s hand-knotted carpet given to the V&A by The Savoy Group, this rug is typical of Art Deco and undeniably elegant, hand-tufted in a wool-rich/viscose blend for a subtle radiance.

The work of French artist, Edouard Benedictus inspires Rosa that takes a detail from the artist’s Variations of 1924, which showcased abstract floral motifs and examined intricate details from textile and wallpaper designs in vibrant colour. Flair Rugs has played on this, enlarging the scale and modernising with a seasonal, fresh colour palette. Rosa is hand-tufted in India from 100% wool.

Inspired by a fragile yet beautiful piece of Chinese wallpaper from 1860, Phoenix features a majestic central motif of a mythical bird surrounded by blooming peonies. Hand-tufted in India and tipsheared for a shimmering hued elegance and to echo the fragile nature of the original work, Phoenix comes in a combination of duck egg blue and ivory, in a 100% viscose.

Based on a furnishing fabric in the V&A archive by Allan Walton Textiles, Rhythm captures the energy and sense of adventure of 1930s ocean voyages. Rhythm references the original aesthetic of the bold, rhythmic composition found in the archive piece, recoloured in grey and ochre. This rug is hand-tufted in India from 100% wool.

entering shopfloors across the UK for consumers.’ The introduction of fabrics, available to all models in a range of colours, offers comfort with contemporary warm and luxurious fabric collections naturally complementing the extensive range of Stressless leathers. Stressless Calido is a wool-felt fabric that feels soft against the skin. The properties of wool allow the material to breathe, thus naturally regulating the temperature. Stressless Silva is a classic wool fabric with excellent stretch properties. Like Calido, Silva is warm when it is cold and cool when it is warm, which gives a more relaxing sitting experience. Virtually real CAD roomsets could prove cost efficient for manufacturers and retailers Digital brand marketing and website specialist Orbital Vision has its sights firmly on the furniture industry. Clients include Debenhams, Celebrity Motion Furniture, Parker Knoll, Linwood Fabrics, Collins & Hayes and Sleepeezee. With an extensive experience spanning photography, branding, ecommerce websites, apps and video, Orbital has developed a way of visualising and selling product: enVision, a platform that delivers the full digital experience. With enVision retailers and manufacturers can present their entire portfolios with a bespoke 3D CAD environment. Retailers and manufacturers can work together to develop photo-realistic imagery, with real life products, that can be used to trade directly online. Roomsets can be manipulated to show different products and fabrics to achieve a tailor-made result. Consumers can customise their selections before purchasing through an integrated ecommerce solution. ‘In an increasingly digitally-driven world, it’s vital that you offer the best imagery and digital experience,’ says Matt O’Flynn, Orbital director, who has worked together with Rob Walker, Orbital director, on individual projects for some

Virtual roomsets can be created

15 years, and was quick to recognise enVision as a universal application in the furniture and interiors sector. Using enVision can bring a swatch library to life, allowing infinite iterations of combinations to be realised in high definition photo-realistic roomsets, and is designed to benefit operators at every stage of the supply chain. O’Flynn explains: ‘Take the fabric sector, for example – manufacturers can create fully rendered roomsettings without weaving a yarn, while retailers and interior designers can employ this imagery in a way that fits their respective brand identities, and end users can create endless looks from

the comfort of their own home. ‘enVision is also about converting furniture ranges into 3D CAD objects to use in the roomsets. Once converted these shapes no longer need photographing again in their lifetime, and can be wrapped and installed into the 3D CAD roomsets. The cost-saving potential is huge, and thanks to the powerful rendering we’re capable of, the realism offered by enVision is indistinguishable from the real thing,’ adds Walker. Curtains, lighting, rugs, beds, and even cabinet furniture can be recreated by the enVision engine. Visit: www.orbital.vision

Global inspiration Gallery Direct has introduced rugs and added textiles Gallery Direct’s latest textiles collection has a new category: rugs, featuring a varied selection including high pile, flatweave and handwoven pieces, handmade in India using traditional techniques. It has also added another brand to the collection: Bohême, to complement Gallery Home, Parisian House and Kilburn & Scott. ‘Bohême is an eclectic mix of homeware reminiscent of a world traveller’s souvenirs. We’ve taken inspiration from products from a vast array of cultures from around the globe, which are individually created by artisans, designing each item to add style and character to an interior. The collection features stunning cushions and throws, in a range of colours to suit different tastes and requirements, from subtle dusky pinks and neutrals to bold blues and oranges to striking ochres and greys. And all the cushions are feather filled for extra comfort and luxury,’ says Jayne Zalega, Gallery Direct business development director, textiles. The hand-embroidered Johari, Suma

and Mahika cushions feature soft neutral tones, while the Nador throw in natural shades complements them. For a splash of colour there is the hand-block printed Advika cushion, with a hand-tied tassel border in teal, and Nakur, with teal fringing. For a more striking look, Kazaar is an ethnic inspired hand-embroidered cushion with coordinating faux silk reverse and piping, and Aztex, with its bold embroidered design, are available in two colourways, ochres and greys, and rich blues and oranges. The 100% cotton Bo-Kaap throw complements the ochre and grey cushions, while the tactile hand-woven Nador throw with ombre threads and decorative tassels goes well with the blue and orange cushions. Hand-embroidered Patterdale features a floral appliqué design in neutral and blush tones with faux silk reverse and piping. Nila is a hand-made cotton cushion with an eclectic embroidered and block printed design, finished with side tassels, while Farha Dusky Blush is a tactile, global inspired feature cushion

with hand-embellishments, embroidery and fringing detail. To complement these are a selection of throws, including Eva, a textured cotton throw featuring a blush and grey patterned border and tassel edging, and Ozar, a textured mohair-feel throw with a blush ombre weave, cream knotted fringing and brushed plain reverse. The hand-woven Opal pouffe coordinates, while the hand-woven Galaxite in a subtle neutral shade can be paired with a wide variety of products. Greendale Carpets & Flooring Greendale Carpets & Flooring is a not for profit group that supplies carpets for its members from its own stockholding warehouse that holds more than 2,000 rolls of carpet. The group has over 50 suppliers and more than 100 own-label carpet ranges all renamed to colour level, enabling members to compete with multiple own-label ranges, widely distributed manufacturers’ products and Internet marketed ranges, and gives them local exclusivity. The group actively discourages online or national marketing as the member in their local area is the priority. All Greendale members belong to BIRA, the association of independent retailers, and qualify for a range of benefits including preferential credit card rates. The group’s website features consumer information as well as a member area and employs agents to help members locally. Greendale still has exclusive areas of the UK available and encourages any retailer who shares its ethos to make contact. Visit: www.greendalecarpets.co.uk

Metro Metro is a group of independent retailers from the smallest operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is vital to Metro members, which is why all group activity is always optional, allowing members to select the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses. Since 1995 the group has had an own-label brand, Carpet 1st, encompassing the bestselling and performing products. Members can maximise profits while supporting the group and authorised suppliers. Metro has a dedicated marketing department with over 30 years of retail flooring experience, complete with a mobile marketing studio. This service allows retailer’s showrooms to be transformed, on-site, with remarkable results. The service particularly appeals to new members that have previously not had access to professional and impartial marketing advice, design and production of material. There’s so much more to Metro than just buying flooring. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

SMG SMG remains the largest and most progressive flooring group in the UK. Members can proudly retain their independence while taking advantage of the most profitable and comprehensive benefits package available. Established retailers with existing direct accounts will benefit from SMG’s special pricing, rebates and promotions to improve their profitability and competitiveness. In addition to the financial advantages, members without direct accounts can still access products from any of SMG’s suppliers via the unique central purchasing scheme. At this year’s BGNFS, SMG will be launching its Pure own brand. This new look own brand, offers members the opportunity to sell exclusively the best ranges available at competitive prices. Alternatively, it can help its members to fully debrand their store if required. All of this together with its awardwinning business support, SMG really does give strength to the independent. Ways of grey Brintons will take the trend for grey in a new direction Brintons is showcasing its latest carpet series Perpetual Textures. Sophisticated and understated for modern living, this new woven axminster range has eight contemporary patterns in varying shades of grey. Taking inspiration from natural fibres and textures these carpets were designed to add a calming influence to any home while the subtle details offer an exciting alternative to a plain. The versatile collection in modern grey tones can work well with minimalist accessories and metallic for spring or be layered against chunky knits and blankets for a cosy feel later in the year. The name Perpetual Textures signifies the eternal popularity of these key fabrics and patterns for both tailoring and interior fashions. Texturing techniques including mottles, striés and fades have been used to give a depth to the designs as well as keeping the practicality of a cut pile. ‘The discreet colour palette gives a modern twist to nostalgic prints. Grey is a wonderful, sophisticated colour, constructed of various shades and undertones. It is not only

Interiors Monthly April 2018

a great companion to other neutral shades but it also has the power to balance out bold accent colours. The designs for this range were influenced by the beauty of chenille, corded and tweed fabrics and inspired by rattan and handwoven techniques,’ says Jodie Hatton, Brintons creative designer. Woven using the 80% wool/20% nylon blend pioneered by Brintons, these carpets are luxurious to touch and hardwearing. This blend is still used today because it has all the beauty of wool, in a much longer-lasting form. Marrying the finest materials with the latest technology, the blends are transformed into carpets on specially made looms, finished by hand and inspected twice before leaving the factory. Perpetual Textures is a nine row carpet series, making it suitable for heavy contract and extra heavy domestic installations. The range will be on display at the show and sampling will be rolled out to top retailers throughout spring/summer 2018. Perpetual Textures is available in a 4m width and has a guide retail price of £59.99. Visit: www.brintons.co.uk

Waves of colour Oriental Weavers is predicting key shades for 2018 Oriental Weavers has long been a leading brand in the rug industry and an established supplier to Flooring One. In May the company returns to BGNFS to showcase some of its ranges for 2018. ‘This season we see a new wave of colours coming to the floor. Sun kissed terracotta, reds and pinks, traditional indigo blues and luscious greens are key shades for this year’s interiors,’ says Lesley-Ann Donnell, Oriental Weavers designer. ‘Check out our plain shaggy ranges Elsa, Harmony and Softness where we have some exciting new colours to launch. There are some colour additions to the popular Carter and Arabesque range. We have also included a few new options to the Kelim flatweave range which we expect to be a big hit.’ The company is predicting a revival in tribal and Moroccan patterns, distressed surfaces, hand-painted effects and maximised foliage patterns. ‘At Oriental Weavers we’ve been embracing these new ideas and created some new ranges to complement this season’s interior style,’ she says. For painterly and distressed patterns, in blue and grey tones, there is soft-touch frise range Sansa. New machine woven Topaz, is a range inspired by this season’s blue and

pink shades with a polyester yarn to create depth. In the machine-made collection there is a new carved frise range that uses a spectrum of bright colours and geometric patterns to create an ultra-contemporary rug. ‘New for this spring/summer we have a new concept Havana: our first range that is suitable for both Indoor and outdoor use. Available in five design options and two sizes, we are excited about this new addition and expect to see more new designs and colours throughout the collection as we update our current ranges,’ adds Donnell. Proposte Italy 2-4 May

PREVIEW

There will be 48 international exhibitors and 41 from Italy

This year there will be 89 exhibiting companies, 41 from Italy and 48 from other countries. The show will see an important collaboration, with architect and designer Mario Bellini returning to the exhibition centre he designed in 1987. Mario Bellini Architects studio is working on the design of the settings for the central pavilion of the exhibition spaces of Villa Erba during the three days of the show. The drawing that has inspired the textile installation is promoted in this year’s advertising image: the first sketch signed by Bellini proved to be so striking as to become the leitmotiv of the entire communication plan of the upcoming edition. For Proposte 2018 Bellini has designed a spiral-shaped installation that has rotational and fluctuating movement, starting from the architectural core of the central round-shaped pavilion, and ideally expands to the entire exhibition complex, including the surrounding park. More details will be provided by Bellini in a lecture on the first day of the exhibition, during which he will illustrate the project conceived for Proposte and his personal experience with the world of furnishing fabrics. REVIEW

London Fabric shrugged off the Beast from the East While snow and wind hit the UK, the conditions did not affect the success of The London Fabric Show, with the fourth BFM hosted event at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium seeing an 18% increase in visitor numbers. Despite the fact that some visitors from Wales and the North of the UK were prevented from getting to London, both days drew record attendance, with visitor numbers on the first day up by 12% at well over 200. On show from 37 exhibitors were new designs and classic collections from some of Europe’s finest fabric producers and suppliers, including six new exhibitors. Visitors included many of the UK’s leading chain store and furniture retail groups, plus buyers of soft furnishings from the hotel and leisure industry.

Spanish company Girones was among those making its debut. ‘We are delighted to have attended London Fabric, the buyers here know what they want and have a desire to see the best fabrics on offer. We have made a great number of good contacts and had a good response to our fabrics and we will be back here again,’ says Javier Girones, Girones director. Belgian producer Escolys also enjoyed success. ‘It has been a very good show for us, we have seen most of our very valued UK customers and met some new ones too,’ says Koen Mortier, Escolys export manager. James Lowe, Aqua Clean Group sales manager, says: ‘This show increases in importance every year, we always have excellent buyers who know what they are looking for, and are open to new

styles, fabric technologies and treatments.’ Jackie Bazeley, BFM md, says she had good responses from both visitors and exhibitors. ‘Prior to the start of the show we thought that the weather might prevent visitors from attending, while it clearly had an effect, it did not stop the majority from getting to London. I have had many positive comments from visitors about the quality of the exhibitors and the fabrics and finishes they showed, along with a great number of compliments from both our returning and new exhibitors. I already have a waiting list of companies eager to exhibit and we are already looking forward to another successful event in 2019.’ Next year’s show will take place from 25-26 February. MIFF hosted a record 625 exhibitors as it used the new Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre for the first time along with its traditional Putra World Trade Centre venue in Kuala Lumpur. The increased space allowed the show to increase by a quarter, covering 100,000sqm. ‘This year has again reinforced MIFF’s global standing as a very happening and productive sourcing hub. It proves we are effective in drawing new exhibitors, buyers and more products to a much larger show. Exhibitors are securing extra business from markets which they have not encountered before such as from Africa and South America,’ says Karen Goi, MIFF general manager. The increased space allowed for the Millennials@Design (MAD) showcase: a gallery highlighting the work of young Malaysian designers. FDC in Action featured the designs of seven former Furniture Design Competition winners and this year’s 20 finalists (see box). The seven have been working closely with manufacturers to present new designs after being mentored by Philip Yap, FDC chief judge. ‘For many years, I have seen so many competitions that have ended up creating a few young stars who just fade away. Why?

Manufacturers and buyers can expect innovative ready to market collections and ideas. I always feel like I am very privileged to have the opportunity to study and work in London.
