EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

New show calendar For three decades, January has meant a visit to the NEC for thousands of retailers – but this year will be the last time as Interiors UK prepares for a new home and date The news (see p7) that the country’s main interiors trade exhibition is to relocate to London next year and take place four months later than it traditionally has will come as a surprise in many quarters. It’s January, so that must mean visiting the NEC: right? Well in recent years the answer for increased numbers of retailers has been no. Fewer visitors has meant fewer exhibitors, which in turn gave retailers less reason to attend. I can remember when Interiors UK filled the ground floor of the NEC, with a waiting list of exhibitors. But times change and organiser UBM had to do something to

put the show in an upward direction. It should be congratulated for taking the bold steps of a new venue and a new date rather than tinker at the edges and hope signs of an improving economy would improve matters. There will invariably be those who lament the change, but having the show later in the year means retailers should be able to make buying decisions based on medium-term performance, not just how the first weeks of the winter sale have gone. UBM’s hope is that by moving the show, it can make it more of an international event at a time when retailers have more time to attend. Another stalwart of the exhibition calendar, The Flooring Show, has also moved dates (see p7) for this year making the end of September a busy period for show-goers. The Office of Fair Trading has also been busy with its investigation into furniture and flooring pricing (it had claimed only 5% of sales were made at higher prices referred to in advertisements). It has cleared DFS of any wrong-doing (see p12) and the likelihood is that it will clear the other six chains before too long.

NEWS

Interiors UK to relocate to London next year The country’s largest furniture trade exhibition, Interiors UK, is to move to London in 2015 after three decades at the NEC. Organised by UBM, the show will run alongside the May Design Series at Excel. Andrew Vaughan, UBM brand director, says the move will increase the number of visitors, create a major international event and allow retailers to make better buying decisions as they will have seen the spring’s main product launches. ‘Timing is important to retailers and manufacturers and there are pressures around Christmas and New Year. Retailers are stressed about having

Neville Cormack The funeral of Neville Cormack, founder of Cormar Carpets, took place on 16 December. He died peacefully at home on 8 December, aged 83. Cormack joined Greenwood and Coope in 1949, the company founded by his father in 1924. Then in 1956 he founded Cormar Carpets and tufting began at Nunn Hills Mill, Stacksteads. Elected chairman of the Tufted Carpet Manufacturer’s Association in 1969, he was a prominent and highly respected member of the UK carpet industry and led Cormar Carpets for 57 years. In 1987 he was awarded the OBE for his services to industry. A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Anne’s Church, Tottington, Bury this month. Donations, if desired, can made to The Christie Charity, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX.

their main industry event during their most important sale period. Retailers are time poor at this time, hence the drop in visitor numbers,’ he says. ‘May has the advantage of representing what has happened before in the spring. It’s the chance to put a major international event on the calendar.’ Vaughan says Excel offers an improved experience and excellent transport links. ‘It’s a tough decision but it’s the right one. We’ve carried out 18 months of research and exhibitors have seen the logic of moving. Exhibitions we’ve previously moved from the NEC to Excel have seen growth,’ he adds.

Excel will host Interiors UK from 2015

Revised September dates for The Flooring Show The Flooring Show is to be held later in September this year, after its planned 31 August to 2 September date was judged too early. The event will now take place from 21-23 September. ‘The revised dates are still at the heart of the retail buying window, but by moving away from the end of the holiday season we give breathing space to trade visitors, to overseas exhibitors, the contract and commercial sector, and other key groups such as facilities managers, architects and designers,’ says Wendy Adams, The Flooring Show event director. ‘The high level of interest from 2013 exhibitors and a healthy number of enquiries from lapsed exhibitors at the show was very encouraging, and we have made great progress in turning these into firm 2014 bookings. ‘We’re well ahead of where we were this time last year, and we will continue to introduce new features and content, as well as ensuring the show meets top international standards,’ she says.

Last year’s event attracted 2,300 visitors including 1,300 retailers and distributors. Moving the event later in the month will see it run alongside Decorex and close to the dates of The Bed Show and many London Design Festival events such as Design Junction and Tent London. ‘These are excellent new dates in a much sought after window for exhibition organisers. It will aid the growth of the show and increase visitor footfall,’ says Paul Stott, co-organiser. ‘We took over a struggling event in the depths of the recession, but a sustained programme of investment, strong management and new content – plus some long overdue economic optimism – have stabilised things. With the support of an important group of loyal exhibitors, who all want the show to continue, and with these excellent new dates, we’re confident we now have a great platform to rebuild it to a size and stature appropriate to this important industry,’ he adds.

Online sales boost provides bright spark for Carpetright Closer integration between its website and call centre has created the equivalent of another top 20 store for Carpetright. Sales conversion rates have improved with better follow-up from stores and its call centre. The chain receives 98,000 unique visitors a week and has seen sample requests grow by a fifth and appointments by 40%. Online provided one positive for the chain with online sales described as ‘growing strongly’. UK retail like for like sales were flat in the six months to 26 October in ‘volatile trading’, but with lower insurance and new house build sales and at new stores, overall UK sales fell by 2.2% to £185m. Underlying operating profit rose from 5.2% to 5.5%. It has now opened 16 sample-only stores which being smaller, have lower costs. It is reducing leases by about 10% when they are renewed. About a fifth of the chain’s 474 branches are due for renewal in the next five years. Beds now account for 7.1% of the sales mix up from 6.6%, and where they are in-store, account for 10.1% of the mix. European operations were again hit by performance in The Netherlands where the flooring market is falling by about 15% a year. Lord Harris, Carpetright executive chairman, says he

hopes it can outlast its rivals. ‘It will be last man standing and we hope to be the last man,’ he says. ‘Historically, the trend in UK mortgage approvals has been a useful lead indicator of consumer demand in our sector, bearing a positive correlation with floorcovering sales. Approvals began to show encouraging signs of improvement during the first half, although this is from a very low base by historic standards. In the past, we have seen a lag of around six months before the impact of a change in the mortgage approval trend has been reflected in our sales,’ he adds. ‘The success of our self-help activities in improving group performance during the period continues to be encouraging, demonstrating that a focus on factors within our control can yield good results. While we anticipate trading conditions will remain challenging, we expect these self-help initiatives will underpin an improvement in group performance in the second half and our expectations for the year as a whole remain unchanged.’ Lord Harris confirmed the chain had yet to begin looking for a permanent successor to Darren Shapland, chief executive, who left in October.

Britons still see their high streets as offering something distinct from online stores and are keen to see them thrive, according to new research. A survey of 1,465 people by Ipsos MORI for the British Property Federation found that 91% think it is important for their local area that their high street does well, and 83% think their area would be worse off without a high street. Threequarters say they visit their local high street at least once a week, with 12% visiting nearly every day. Almost half of the respondents (48%) say the quality of their high street is being maintained, 34% feel it is getting worse and 18% think it is improving. In terms of what could tempt more people to visit the high street more often, the most popular choice from a list of 16 was a better selection of shops (42%), ahead of fewer empty shops (31%), a better/more pleasant environment (14%) and better transport links (7%). The survey found use and strong support for the high street across every gender, age, class and income group, although there was higher frequent use (every day or most days) among lower income groups, older people and those in northern England, Scotland and the East. Even those who visited less than once a month think the high street is important, with 72% of this group saying it is important for their area that the high street does well.

DFS cleared in OFT price fixing probe DFS has been cleared by the Office of Fair Trading’s investigation into alleged price fixing. ‘The OFT is completely satisfied that DFS is in full compliance in relation to the issues that it was investigating, and has therefore closed its investigation into DFS,’ says Keith Baker, DFS director of sales. ‘We are pleased the OFT has publicly welcomed DFS’ existing and continual commitment to open and transparent pricing. To make our commitment to transparent pricing even more visible to our customers, we are publishing our current existing pricing practices both on our website and within our formal terms and conditions. So when a customer visits DFS they can be confident that all our prices will always be the same whether they are in any of our stores or online. ‘In addition, we assure customers that no product will ever be on sale for longer than it is available at its normal price. At DFS a time limited offer, has always been just that,’ he says. The OFT’s investigation began after it claimed that only 5% of sales were made at the higher prices referred to in advertisements. Bensons Beds, Carpetright, Dreams, Furniture Village, Harveys and SCS Upholstery are the other retailers being investigated. The OFT decision came as DFS opened its 100th store – in Torquay – after seeing sales drop in the summer. Earnings fell 29% to £7.2m in the quarter to 26 October, traditionally its weakest, as sales fell £1.5m to £142.5m. The chain’s Doncaster factory is running at record levels of production after switching to a full double shift and the first two weeks of its winter sale, which began at the start of December, were described as ‘going really well.’

Opportunities for consumers to recycle their carpets have leapt according to new research, with the number of local authorities collecting carpets at household waste recycling centres trebling. According to Carpet Recycling UK, the number of councils collecting carpets has jumped to 45 in the past 18 months. It says that more than 200 HWRCs are now involved in segregating carpets, giving more than seven million households the opportunity to recycle their carpets. The average household carpet disposal rate is 6.7kg a year, with a range from 3.8kg to 9.6kg dependent on catchment area size plus the period of time in which collections have been established. Carpet Recycling UK says the research will be used to help more local authorities engage in collecting carpets, increasing their site recovery rates and saving raw materials for reuse or primary fuel replacement.

Green credentials Furniture companies have again been invited to prove their green credentials. British manufacturing members of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP), administered by FIRA and holders of The Furniture Makers’ Company Manufacturing Guild Mark, will be invited to enter the third annual The Furniture Makers’ Sustainability Award, which recognises, rewards and publicises the good work being done. The judges will look for evidence of how a sustainable approach improved performance, growth, competitiveness, customer perception and staff engagement in 2013. The deadline for entries is 31 January with shortlist presentations in March. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.furnituremakers.org.uk.

CSL becomes Sofaworks as it heads for record sales Upholstery chain CSL has rebranded itself as Sofaworks, as it anticipates breaking the £100m annual sales mark. The 26-store chain, set up by the Tyldesley family in 1984, has forecast sales of more than £104m, up 17%, helped by three store openings and single-digit like for like growth. The chain has developed its own upholstery ranges and plans to open nine branches this year. ‘With strong evidence of rising consumer confidence, our trading performance and plans for next year mean we are perfectly positioned to capitalise. We have always taken pride in treating customers with respect and being open and honest – these are the values that have been with the business from the start. However, as Sofaworks, we’re taking that proposition a step further, creating a truly unique and market-beating customer offer,’ says Jason Tyldesley, Sofaworks chief executive.

OPINION

Darren Hargreaves Freedom Sofas md

Proud to support independents I am now in my 25th year in the furniture industry and proud to be putting my knowledge and experience to a satisfying use by launching Freedom Sofas, which has been created specifically with the needs of independent retailers in mind. I have managed a furniture retail store and have spent many years as an agent and sales director of Furnico, the parent company of Freedom. So, it is fair to say I have experience of the issues facing independents from both sides of the fence. There is often a perception that manufacturers go out of their way to favour groups, which can leave independents feeling sidelined and unimportant. I can fully understand the frustration of a high street store manager when their customer’s order is left waiting because deliveries to a chain have been given priority. And I well know the disappointment when a chain is selling the same model as you, but for £100 cheaper. Not to mention having to explain to customers why Christmas delivery is still available on their chosen suite from a large retail chain, but not from your high street store. The convenience and choice offered by chains cannot be denied, but the fact is that there is still a huge section of the market who prefer the personal service offered by a high street store. Customers also like to feel that they are supporting their town’s business community by shopping locally. After a quarter of a century in the business, I have decided that it is time some of the power balance is restored to our high street furniture stores. I launched Freedom Sofas to enable independents to combat the main disadvantages faced by competing with groups. I believe that both chains and independents have different advantages to offer the customer, so it should not be viewed as a competition in the first place. Because all our ranges will be exclusive to independents, they can be confident of making a decent margin and will be able to assure customers that they won’t find the same suite cheaper at a retail park. I am hopeful that, as the economic downturn begins to ease, our high street furniture retailers will see a new lease of life. Many of these are long-standing and often family-run businesses, which have a wealth of knowledge and advice to impart to customers. I am proud to be supporting them.

Eco Designs uses 50% recycled plastic bottles – about 40 2litre bottles for every sqm of carpet – and 50% New Zealand wool. The three-ply, two tone natural loop pile carpet is available in 4m and 5m widths and seven shades.

Eco Designs builds on the success of Eco Collection’s debut range, Eco Style. This loop carpet mixes 90% PET with 10% wool and offers five plains and five coordinating stripes. Recycled PET carpet has qualities that make it attractive and practical to use, including stain resistance and the plastic fibre wearing well. The PET used to make drinks bottles is

a high quality resin because it must meet US Food and Drug Administration standards to be considered food grade. Its quality is not diminished by the recycling process – even after being ground into flakes, melted and extruded into carpet fibres, it produces a yarn of a higher quality than most other synthetic carpet yarns. Delivering to independents Edel Telenzo is building on the success of 2013 Following a strong fourth quarter, Phil Hartley, Edel Telenzo Carpets chief executive, believes the timing of Domotex in Hannover (11-14 January), is ideal for launching its 2014 collection and continuing the positive momentum of the past few months into the New Year. ‘Our design and development team have been working to meet the deadline presented by the exhibition, and will not disappoint, delivering a strong package of new ranges suited to the UK and in some cases, our wider global markets,’ he says. ‘We are focused on the independent retailer sector, this is where we have an unenviable reputation for service and quality and it is in this sector where we are focusing the majority of our efforts and investments.’ As an example of this, he cites being awarded for the first time Supplier of the Year by Greendale Carpets and Flooring. ‘This is of course, all to do with Lesley Inman, operations manager and the team in Elland, which has developed a highly efficient service centre over the years and it is

Clean fight for wool Initiative highlights cleanability A campaign to promote wool carpets as being easy to clean has been launched as suppliers try to increase demand for wool carpets. Clarendon, Crucial Trading, Gaskell Wool Rich, Georgian Carpets, Kersaint Cobb, Kingsmead, Manx and Mr Tomkinson have been joined by British Wool, Woolsafe and Wools of New Zealand in creating WOW (Wool Owners Warranty) to convince consumers that wool carpets are as easy to clean as man-made fibres. For years manufacturers of polypropylene carpets have successfully promoted that the carpets can be bleach cleaned, with many consumers seeing wool carpets as more difficult to clean. Under the new initiative, consumers will receive a 12 month warranty against staining for their new wool carpet. At the time of purchase, or later, they can register their details at www.wowwarranty.com and they or the retailer select a Woolsafe accredited carpet cleaner. Once the carpet has been fitted, the cleaner will visit and give them a stain removing spray and advice. If the homeowner cannot remove a stain themselves, the carpet cleaner will clean the carpet free of charge. If after 12 months the carpet is professionally cleaned, the warranty will be extended for another year. POS for WOW is being introduced to retailers this month. The website also has cleaning advice and videos showing how wool carpets can be cleaned. The initiative is open to other companies and the initial members of the scheme are hopeful more wool carpet firms will swell the ranks. Visit: www.wowwarranty.com

POS including posters, window stickers, mugs and swing tickets will be introduced

Eco recognition Kahrs’ flooring shortlisted in prestigious awards Pirdra

The world’s first floor made from dualcertified FSC-Fairtrade wood – developed by Kährs – was shortlisted in the Surfaces category of the FX International Interior Design Awards 2013. Part of Kährs’ World Collection, ‘the eco-range is the most eco-conscious and socially responsible wood floor in the world,’ according to Harvey Booth, Kahrs’ UK manager. ‘Produced as part of the first FSCFairtrade sustainable small scale forestry

and eco-tourism project in Chile’s Curacautin Valley, the production supports the restoration of biodiversity in the forest and also aims to reduce poverty and restore the rights to the indigenous Mapuche people and descendants of pioneer families.’ Floors are made using a combination of sustainable native Rauli and Roble hardwood timber. The hardwood is used in the surface layer only, while FSC Mix certified wood is used for the core layers,

combining eco and performance benefits. ‘This prestigious achievement is particularly relevant, as it illustrates the importance of ethical, eco-focused products within interior design and specification. ‘The range also satisfies demand in terms of design and performance, providing a contemporary surface option that ticks all of the boxes,’ says Booth. A Hybrid New Year Sealy is enjoying success with its latest collection The new Hybrid beds from Sealy Posturepedic are proving successful following their launch in September. ‘We had an outstanding exhibition at The Bed Show with a huge amount of interest shown in the new Hybrid range by all the visitors to our stand. So much so, we surpassed all our targets for sales there including a lot of new accounts and have since been busy trying to catch up with customers who weren’t able to get to Telford, but who have heard about the new beds and want to know more about them,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director. ‘These innovative beds are going down a storm and although it’s early days, we are thrilled to be seeing repeat

orders for them coming through already.’ Sealy is supporting the launch with a major promotional campaign to the public so retailers will hopefully see lots of customer requests to try out the beds. The six Hybrid beds are a fusion of Geltex, a new highly elastic gel and breathable foam merged with the latest, specially designed, innovative springs. The top layer of unique cooling and breathable gel foam offers anatomically correct support, hygienic protection and no sweating or shivering – the ideal sleeping climate for every season. ‘Unlike normal memory foam beds, these Hybrid divans and mattresses are wonderfully springy and bouncy, combining springs and the Geltex layer,

offering the best of both worlds,’ he says. In addition to Sealy’s Smart Fibres, the ticking is a new type of flexible, stretchy soft mattress covering that contains Adaptive. Adaptive is a new treatment that changes passive textiles to textiles with a dynamic response to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. Adaptive reuses the energy (heat) of the body to boost moisture wicking, moisture evaporation and cooling, to keep the sleeper and the mattress cool and dry, all night. Adaptive treated mattress ticking works through the bed sheets and/or mattress protector as long as the textile layers have good breathability. Sealy, tel: 01697 320 342

We’d like to raise a glass to all our retail partners and thank them for making 2013’s launch of the Sealy Hybrid Collection such a success. Containing Geltex, Adaptive technology and Sealy’s unique Posturepedic spring system, you’ve really got behind this innovative new product and we know it will continue to gain in popularity in 2014.

Both are handmade using nature’s finest materials, unique wool blends developed from the Somnus Farm, and new spring technology. Somnus is at the forefront of pocket spring design technology and has designed each model with a higher number of springs to give a more supportive, comfortable sleeping surface. The Sensa iP Intelligent Pocket spring system has the springs moving independently of each other, distributing the sleeper’s weight across a higher number of springs and so supporting and contouring more exactly to body shape. The result is fewer pressure points and better sleep. Only the finest natural upholstery materials are selected. To help guarantee the quality of the materials Somnus has its own sheep flocks on the Somnus farm and has developed Yorkshire Dales and Herdwick Eco wool. These have been turned into unique

Open house Nolte Delbrück wants retailers to visit its German showroom Bedroom and living room company Nolte Delbrück is inviting retailers to visit its showroom near Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. ‘Nolte Delbrück will not be at Interiors UK this year. It’s a conscious decision as there was too much to show on the stand,’ says Wayne Dance, InHouse Inspired Room Design md, Nolte’s UK representative. At Paderborn retailers can see the full range of Nolte Delbrück’s bedroom and living furniture, and get inspiration from the roomset designs. Retailers will also have the time to assess the quality of the furniture in the manufacturing facility. The company boasts numerous awards for its furniture, including the Deutsche Gütegemeinschaft Möbel (German Furniture Quality Assurance Association) seal of approval and the Alliance for Quality. Further accolades include the Blue Angel Environmental Award and the proud stamp of Furniture with Style Made in Germany award. ‘Providing first class support to retailers combined with quality of furniture and stunning styles is key to Nolte Delbrück. We want to make our UK retailers’ businesses a success, so if you’re looking for a change, come and join us in Germany,’ says Dance. Among the designs on show will be Trenta, Skyline and My Way. Trenta makes a statement in the classic Bauhaus style. Front designs are in high gloss black or white, set in high quality chromed steel. The modular Skyline has units in four module heights and two widths, that can be combined to meet the requirements for modern furniture concepts. With multifunctional solutions, My Way offers spacious units, angular roof slopes and corner units and can be used in the bedroom, home office or living room. Nolte Delbrück, tel: 01661 842 304

Focus on quality Wiemann is looking to continue its growth With optimism that 2014 will be a revival year in the fortunes of the industry and after eight years of continuous growth, Wiemann’s focus is on quality rather than quantity and working closely with retailers as committed to the brand as Wiemann is to the UK, according to Peter Hewitt, md of Litmus Furniture, Wiemann UK and Republic of Ireland agent. ‘We think we’ve got the depth of choice, quality and service to make that happen,’ he says. Still taking centre stage is the Loft from Wiemann’s top end VIP range, looking at its best in a combination of dark rustic oak and magnolia finishes. It will be presented at Interiors UK as a 3m

Launches for 2014 include another wood finish range, Bergamo, satisfying a demand for a more traditional style for the mid-market with a choice of dark or light rustic oak; and Shanghai, in a multitude of glass colours – not just for

the door fronts but for the sides, too, in a choice of sliding or hinged door wardrobes and corner arrangements. Jive is a potential eye-catcher with panels and matching faux leather headboards contrasting against white in lime or mango as well as the more conventional Sahara and Havanna. In addition to the new Savanna oak finish, Wiemann is introducing Polar larch for 2014 – it will be shown combined with Havanna in the new Stockholm range at Interiors UK; while Qatar plugs a gap for a glitter-adorned collection in black. Little Tree Furniture’s bedroom ranges illustrate the company’s green credentials. The Astern range uses recycled boatwood. Boats that have reached the end of their lifespan are dismantled. The wood itself is extremely strong having survived years of erosion by the sea and the elements. Bolts, nails and screws are removed, often leaving holes in the planks. To remove all the moisture, the planks are then kiln dried for 15 days. Some 90% of the wood from a single boat is used, preserving the paint flecks, cracks and

BEDS AND BEDROOM holes – features that make each piece of furniture unique. To complement the naturally aged timber, many items feature a steel casing or steel frame, giving the range individuality and a contemporary rustic feel. The Rustica upcycled chest of drawers is handmade from reclaimed hardwood that previously formed part of housing and general premises in India. In most cases this wood is hundreds of years old. Previously the timber would have been destroyed and lost forever, however, in line with the company’s policy of ‘wood working with a conscience’, the timber has been upcycled. The Mary Rose collection takes its nautical name from the fact that most of the hardwood used to create the colourful collection is from reclaimed fishing boat timbers and still bears its natural colouring and markings. Some of the wood used is more than 150 years old. Visit: www.littletreefurniture.co.uk

BEDS AND BEDROOM

The art of simplicity Loaf has been hailed as the country’s fastest growing home furnishing brand Frustrated at spending a precious Saturday buying a bed, Charlie Marshall decided he could do better himself. ‘I think too much choice can be really stressful, especially with shopping,’ he says. So two years and 187 mattress and bed factory visits later, he founded The Sleep Room in December 2008 selling just 12 beds and one mattress online. In October 2012 The Sleep Room was

rebranded as Loaf (chosen as it is a onesyllable word that is easy to remember and evokes comfort) and it began selling products for other rooms last year. Fast forward to today and Marshall is forecasting sales of £18m for the year to March 2014 for loaf.com. He wants sales of £100m in five years’ time. And Loaf has been profitable since its launch. It made £189,000 from sales of £1.3m in its first full year, rising to

BEDS AND BEDROOM £800,000 from £7.79m of sales last year and a profit of £1.8m is forecast for this year, selling around 800 beds and sofas a week. Last month the retailer was ranked 40th in The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 with annual sales growth of 81% over the past three years and sales of £7.79m for the financial year 2012/13. When it comes to business, Marshall constantly bangs on about the three Rs: ‘Reduce, Reduce, Reduce!’ This involves working concepts through again and again to make them as simple as possible. For Loaf, the art of keeping things simple is everything. Stripping back an idea, design or functionality to its core applies to all facets of the business so that the entire shopping process – from that first click on to the website to receiving the goods – is as easy as possible for the customer. Marshall says that he sometimes wrestles with a ‘discotheque’ of ideas, and distilling them into coherent thoughts can be challenging. ‘Simplicity is not easy to achieve. In fact it’s insanely difficult.’ To attain that simplicity, he spends a great deal of time ‘working out the question we are trying to answer. Once we have the answer, we test one approach thoroughly – and if that doesn’t work we test another – to get to where we want to go. Rather than trying everything at once in the hope that something – anything – will work.’

The question Loaf was founded on was: ‘How do we solve the problem of buying a bed from the high street, which is expensive and complicated?’ Marshall’s answer: ‘Offer a limited range of gorgeous, insanely well-made products that won’t break the bank – and do it online.’ On marketing Marshall says: ‘We trim the fat wherever we can. Especially with copy for our newsletter, blog or brochure. We always ask ourselves: “What are we trying to say? Why is it interesting? Would I want to read this? Do our customers want to read this?” This makes sure that our messages are crystal clear.’ Loaf sends out a weekly newsletter to its 50,000 (and increasing) subscribers. A quarterly direct marketing campaign will see 1.3m brochures land on doormats across the UK over the next 12 months. As far as product development is concerned, this side of the business also subscribes to Marshall’s three Rs. With all

52

the design work done in-house, the approach to the design process is fairly simple with the team creating pieces they’d want in their own homes. As with many an online company, things are a little different with job titles such as Head of Happiness, Head of Stories and Head of Numbers. And Loaf is also different from many etailers, with plans to open large destination stores (Loaf Shacks) if it is to meet the £100m target. Omni-channel is much more than a buzzword for Marshall, who believes that the future of the homewares industry will see physical spaces running alongside online offerings. At Loaf staff pride themselves on an honest, plain-talking and straightforward approach, they believe in talking to their customers as they would to friends. Customers respond well to the chatty, natural tone of voice and their loyal

customer base is steadily growing. ‘Brand content is becoming more and more personal and informal. Customer–business relationships have changed and I think that consumers are looking for brands that they can trust both online and offline. Nowadays people subconsciously expect a personal relationship with their preferred brands,’ he explains. Having started out as a one-man band and then employing a team of three in year one, Loaf is now 38 strong and will increase to about 50 people at its west London showroom and head office over the next few months. Marshall highlights the importance of good people, good training and good communication throughout the company. ‘We seek to employ people who get what we do from the start, and who uphold the simple, age-old values of good manners, a can-do attitude,

common sense and hard work,’ he says. He looks for employees who are ‘disarmingly normal’, a quality he says is surprisingly hard to find as people tend to put up corporate fronts. ‘Employees’ happiness is key to encouraging productivity, creativity and a culture of honesty. I don’t believe in corporate hierarchy or rules as it doesn’t bring out the best in people – you should be able to be yourself in the workplace.’ Free Thursday lunches, duvet days, a bike to work scheme, and friends and family discounts are a few of the perks. Marshall applies the same down to earth philosophy to Loaf’s relationships with suppliers. International and British manufacturers are chosen for their cando attitude and are usually family-run companies with a good work ethic. Currently 50% of Loaf’s suppliers are British, with all of the mattresses made in Wiltshire and upholstery hand-produced in Long Eaton. Loaf is working through the challenge of growing from a fairly small company into a medium enterprise without losing

54

any of the brand’s magic and integrity. The priority is to maintain the smallbusiness mentality that Loaf was built on and remain true to its open, friendly and personal approach. Owning the company outright makes it is easier to do this. Marshall describes himself as ‘impetuous by nature’ and having 100% control means that, ‘We don’t have to answer to a board or spend hours in long non-essential meetings. This way things can happen much quicker.’ The biggest joy of running the company is ‘that moment after our new designs have been photographed and are showcased on the website and in the brochure. Conception to the end result is a jigsaw puzzle – I love seeing it all come together,’ he says. To enable Loaf to grow, cash is continuously reinvested back into the business. The rapid growth has been the result of increasing the product range (with sofas becoming a significant contributor), boosting press and Google advertising, and the introduction of

direct marketing through the brochure. Growing brand awareness happens more through word of mouth thanks to the blog, newsletter and social media. A new IT system is being invested in to streamline all areas of the business – one which is more user friendly for employees, can cope with the everexpanding product line, and ensure better communication with the back end of the business such as finance and warehousing. The website design has recently been changed to cater for over 40 new fabric options for sofas, love seats, armchairs, upholstered beds and headboards. Ask Marshall about the Fast Track listing and he barely pauses before replying: ‘It’s good to know that all the hard work and sleepless nights are paying off. But there were 39 companies who were ahead of us which we need to do something about next year.’ Make no mistake, it is Loaf’s aim to become a household name, but to do it simply of course. US retail giant Williams-Sonoma has arrived on this side of the Atlantic, with the European launch of its West Elm brand in London last month. The 12,000sqft furniture, flooring, lighting and accessory store is the latest interiors addition to Tottenham Court Road. ‘We’re excited to continue Williams-Sonoma’s global expansion with our first West Elm store in Europe. West Elm is our fastest growing brand, and has proven successful in markets around the world. We’re looking forward to the response to our new store in the UK,’ says Laura Alber, Williams-Sonoma president and ceo. Aimed at the mid to upper end of the market, West Elm’s first catalogue was launched in 2002 and its first store a year later. Since then it has increased to 57 stores (excluding London) in the US, Canada and Australia and sales of £205m in 2012. It has a franchise operation in the Middle East. West Elm’s offer is best described as classic contemporary (‘unique, affordable designs for modern living’), balancing the more traditional look of its sister chain Pottery Barn. ‘London has such vibrant communities centred

For the 53 weeks to 3 February 2013, it had combined sales of £2.45bn and an operating margin of 10.1%. In November, Laura Alber, ceo, raised her forecast for 2013/2014, to sales of £2.64bn.

around design and innovation. I couldn’t think of a better location for our first West Elm store in Europe,’ says Jim Brett, West Elm president. ‘We are confident the broad assortment, globally-inspired aesthetic and engaging in-store experience of West Elm will appeal to customers in the UK.’ Brett says that having made its UK entry, it is in the process of securing a second London site, before expanding to other large cities such as Glasgow and Manchester. Its UK ecommerce website is expected to launch this month. He says while the UK market is competitive, inspiring consumers, its exclusive product and world class service will allow it to stand out. The store will offer workshops, design classes and an interior design service. Williams-Sonoma also plans to introduce Pottery Barn to the UK, with Brett describing it as a priority for the group. Pottery Barn has 192 stores in the US and Canada and has often served as an inspiration for UK retailers looking for the next trend or merchandising idea. In 2012 it enjoyed sales of £1.06bn, up 8.5%. Visit: www.westelm.co.uk

RETAIL London taxis covered in iconic Cath Kidston prints burst out of a giant Christmas present at Marble Arch, London, to celebrate the opening of the largest Cath Kidston store at 180 Piccadilly during the brand’s 20th anniversary year last month. For one week the chain sponsored eight taxis to offer shoppers free journeys to the store from anywhere across central London. The streets around the store were covered with clean graffiti in one of the brand’s iconic floral prints combined with pigeon footprints. More than 20,000 products are displayed in the 7,070sqft flagship store across three floors including home, accessories, fashion and kids. The home of modern vintage will play host to various new ranges and services including the Cath Kidston bespoke furniture upholstery service. For the first time customers can browse their favourite prints, historic and new, and create a unique sofa or chair for their home. The store is a far cry from the small shop in Holland Park, west London where the company started out in 1993. There are now 68 UK stores including the new flagship branch, taking the total number of stores globally to 143. ‘Twenty years ago, when it first began I never imagined that we would have over 100 stores across the UK, Europe and Asia. We are so excited about the London flagship launch and delighted that we have found this perfect landmark site in Piccadilly. It fits our brand perfectly,’ says Cath Kidston, founder and creative director.

RETAIL Kenny Wilson, Cath Kidston chief executive, says: ‘It gives our customers the chance to come in and experience the brand at its best in our largest store. We chose 180 Piccadilly as the home of the brand because London is an obvious location for a brand founded in London and this is a really iconic location. ‘It was always our plan to open a flagship store in London because at the end of the day it is our home city and we are a quintessentially British brand, and while we have large stores around the world where we are growing, London is the heart and soul of the brand. The brand is one that appeals to everyone and there is something for everyone at every price,’ he adds. Cath Kidston opened its first overseas store in Tokyo in 2006. The company is majority-owned by private equity firm TA Associates. Global sales rose by 24% to £129m in the year to 1 April 2013. The £50 Day Bag is the bestselling item in the UK and Europe, with four sold every five minutes. Six mugs are sold every two minutes and an ironing board cover – the brand’s first product – is sold every seven minutes. UNDERLAY

Helping hand Floorwise has introduced an underlay that backs the charity Breast Cancer Care Floorwise Aware is the first underlay to give to charity and to have a profile worthy of focus in-store, according to Richard Bailey, Floorwise md. For every 15sqm of Floorwise Aware installed in the home, Floorwise will donate £6 per roll to Breast Cancer Care. ‘In a wider perspective the underlay also represents an opportunity for retailers to engage with their local community and to make a positive and supported step in raising their profile in the eyes of present and potential customers. The key to this is that the story behind the underlay is probably bigger than the product itself,’ he says. ‘We all know someone that has been affected by breast cancer, either directly or through a friend or relative, and this is what makes the support of the Breast Cancer Care charity so natural. ‘By donating to this charity, we are spreading just a little of this positive light upon flooring retailers, giving them a real opportunity to open dialogue with potential and existing customers without it having to be focused on the hard sell. Instead a conversation can be started focused around the work of the charity and how the retailer is doing their part, whether in fundraising or holding events, to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.’

68

Interiors Monthly January 2014

Floorwise Aware supports Breast Cancer Care

One of the most powerful visual tools of the charity is the attention grabbing colour pink. There are pink themed goods from other consumer product sectors, so it was decided that Floorwise Aware should be pink too. ‘The underlay, packaging, website (www.comfortthatcares.com) and in-store marketing material all feature pink, helping to reinforce the association with

the charity and creating instant recognition,’ adds Bailey. Each retailer will receive a pack of marketing materials to make the most of this association with posters, leaflets and dispenser, a window sticker, balloons and sample presenter all geared towards spreading the message of Floorwise Aware and Breast Cancer Care. Facts to know about AIS ● AIS is the largest non-food buying group of its kind and has more than 260 members made up of independent department stores and specialist retailers. ● Overall, those retailers operate more than 700 stores in the UK and Republic of Ireland with a combined turnover of about £1.8bn. ● Furniture is the single biggest AIS trading category and its listed furniture suppliers deal with more than half of the AIS membership.

Associated Independent Stores (AIS) will again welcome members and nonmembers when the third The Furniture Show takes place this month. In the past two years the event has become an established date in the show calendar, with a host of exclusive exhibitors. The first two days of the show remain exclusive to AIS members with a further three days being open to non-members, running concurrently with Interiors UK at the NEC. ‘This gives all buyers another reason to visit Birmingham during that time, especially as the location of The Furniture Show at Cranmore Park, Solihull, is so near to the NEC, making it easy to take in both shows. In addition to the attractions of the Cranmore Park setting, those exhibiting are not at the NEC, so if retailers that aren’t members of AIS want

to see their new ranges in January, then they need to make time to visit The Furniture Show at AIS,’ says Suzy McMahon AIS furniture controller. A variety of manufacturers will exhibit in the ground floor AIS showroom area where the friendly buying environment gives visitors a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere conducive to making buying and ranging decisions. There is free on-site parking, refreshments and a complimentary lunch for all pre-registered guests. ‘Returning again are major brands such as Tetrad, Himolla, Nathan and Sutcliffe and these will be accompanied by many established names such as Wade, Actona, Whitemeadow and Marinelli and fashionable brands such as MWA, O&G, Domitalia and Habufa. ‘What buyers will find when they visit

Cranmore Park is a good mix of contemporary, transitional and traditional product ranges that can only be seen here,’ McMahon adds. Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home, adds that the products that are exclusive to AIS members will not be on display during the three general trade days and that anyone interested in gaining access to those should consider joining the buying group. Cranmore Park is located just off the M42 within a few minutes of Birmingham International rail and air links. The first two days (17-18 January) are for AIS members only, while nonmembers can visit on 19 January: 8.30am – 5pm; 20 January: 8.30am – 6pm and 21 January: 8.30am – 5pm. Chair reaction Himolla is hoping for a repeat of the good response its latest recliners received in Brussels Mark Litterst, Himolla UK export manager, has a broad smile on his face. It is a smile that visitors to last year’s Brussels Furniture Fair also saw reflected on the faces of export staff on the Himolla stand, and one that Litterst hopes to repeat at The Furniture Show. ‘Until recently about 70% of our turnover was based on sofa groups. But we now have convincing evidence that recliner chairs are a coming force in the marketplace. And we have good news for our stockists,’ he says. To consolidate its position Himolla has launched two families of recliner chairs, enabling the company to present what it says is Europe’s widest selection of recliners. These will make their UK debut at the show.

72

Interiors Monthly January 2014

The latest Zerostress recliners have – in line with long-held customer expectations – been developed to include an integral footrest. ‘It is the perfect option for customers who like the look and comfort of the traditional Zerostress range but didn’t like the clutter of a separate footstool,’ explains Litterst. The new Cosyform range is aimed at the top end of the market. Like Zerostress, they are offered in various sizes and widths, but have both manual and three electric motor options. ‘From the stockist’s point of view, another advantage lies in the way the new ranges integrate into the existing Himolla concept without requiring significantly more floorspace. Our

stockists know perfectly well which styles are best suited to their stores and will dedicate the amount of space the products deserve. It has never been our policy to impose our ideas on our partners, beyond our standard quality controls, of course,’ adds Litterst. ‘There was a hugely favourable reaction to the new ranges at the Brussels show, so we’ve geared up for the demand projected for January, but will maintain the existing strict, stockist-only policy. As coverage of the UK is almost complete – barring a few blank spots on the retail map – we will be carefully considering which stores will be most suited to carry the brand in the future,’ he adds. Keeping La-Z-Boy moving Andrew Porter celebrates five years of working with La-Z-Boy

More than 2,500 La-Z-Boy suites are delivered throughout the UK and Ireland every month. Keeping the brand moving is furniture logistics and storage specialist Andrew Porter, which has worked as delivery partner for La-ZBoy UK since the licence was taken on by David Winter, La-Z-Boy UK md, five years ago. The firm acts as an outsourced warehousing and logistics division for La-Z-Boy, providing dedicated stockholding space of 35,000sqft, or 4,500 pallet spaces, routeing and planning every delivery to stores and homes, as well as managing reverse logistics. Tim Aspey, Andrew Porter md, commented: ‘One of La-Z-Boy UK’s key selling points is its provision of priority delivery on a range of selected models, and for this reason a huge amount of stockholding is required. ‘Clearly the lead up to Christmas is a vital sales period and we have seen in excess of a 30% increase in deliveries over the past three months. During this time, out of the 8,000 product deliveries, we have seen a success rate of 98.6%, which is far above the industry standard,’ said Aspey. La-Z-Boy UK’s Winter, says it is vital to be able to have an open and trusting relationship with a logistics supplier in order to have confi-

dence in providing the highest possible standard to customers. ‘La-Z-Boy retailers expect a great deal, and for good reason as they are buying a premium priced product,’ he said. ‘We can only control so much of our customers’ buying experience and a part of that is always in the hands of Andrew Porter. For this reason we appreciate the efforts that Tim and his team go to in order to work with the needs of our customers and forward-plan to ensure a smooth order experience from start to finish. ‘Throughout our working relationship we have experienced the growing pains that come with raising a business from a £6m turnover to £26m. Andrew Porter has worked with us throughout to ensure that our provision to customers not only remained consistent, but improved where possible. We regularly visit Andrew Porter’s premises in Lancashire and are impressed at the care put into the management of our stock and the attention to detail that is evident,’added Winter. The firm’s work with La-Z-Boy UK is set to increase again in 2014, with the introduction of a raft of new products from the worldrenowned brand. And to further cement the partnership, Andrew Porter now has special La-Z-Boy branded wagons within its furniture logistics fleet.

tables plus a dining table with a mirrored stainless steel base and a glass top. Killymoon Bespoke Living’s additions include Madison, bringing a modern twist to a wing chair and the deep buttoned-back and side-panelled Majestic headboard. Journeyman Furniture will show its Footprint table, made in solid European oak with footprints contoured into the top surface and on the underside – giving the impression that the table has been walked on and the surface has been pushed through. It is also introducing a matching dining table for the Ribbon chair. The table seats four to six people with a 120cm diameter glass top on a wood and steel base. Shore is an occasional table adapted to the original design for the Footprint table, and Art in a Box is the first in a series of cabinets. Westminster’s new designs for 2014 include the Venetian seating range with all-weather PU leather cushions, the Web chair in four colours and the Leaf chair.

New identity Oriental Carpets and Rugs has become Think Rugs Think Rugs is the new brand and trading name of Oriental Carpets and Rugs. The aim in changing the company’s identity was to create a unique, smart and simple brand within the rug market. The www. thinkrugs.co.uk and .com websites have taken all the best parts of the previous website and added features with an up-to-date design. The aim is to drive consumer traffic to the website with the focus on helping consumers find a product, check stock and then find a stockist. Despite the name change the product base will be based on the same ethos: the 2014 brochure includes more handmade products from India and China than before. Think Rugs now has more than 80 products originating in India and more than 100 from China. This year will see the debut of more than 80 products picked with new trends and the rebranding in mind. Product launches include the bold Aztec design, influenced by the increasing trends of South American styles and made from 100% handtufted wool. One of these collections that is now available is Fusion. Currently offered in three designs, each with a variety of colours, Fusion is constructed using wool and polyester creating a high density soft finish. The range has been created using colours from Pantone’s 2014 colour charts

Onwards and upwards Julian Bowen is looking to build on a successful year Julian Bowen is reflecting on another successful year where sales increased 15% over 2012. It will start the New Year exhibiting at Interiors UK, focused on driving forward with the launch of a number of developments alongside the existing bestsellers. As part of its continued growth strategy in the bedroom market, it will launch a white painted bedroom range. ‘The classically styled design takes its influence from the Louis XV period with a comprehensive range of chests, wardrobes and dressing table. The shapely cabriole leg, finely carved detailing and silky smooth stone white painted finish makes this collection la pièce de résistance in any bedroom,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen commercial director. The recently launched Marlborough oak bedroom collection will take centre stage. ‘It’s a competitively priced range with a sumptuous waxed finish and has been one Versailles of the best bedroom launches in our history and proving to be a real winner,’ he says. Also recently launched, the childrens’ Kimbo cabin bed will be exhibited at Interiors UK for the first time. This multifunctional eye-catching cabin bed offers the option of a pink and white or a blue and white colour combination. The Scorpion Racer bed in a high gloss red finish will also be an impressive feature on the stand, complete with matching bedding and direct home delivery included in the price. It will be extending its comprehensive range of beds with the launch of a chrome bed frame, described as ‘majestic with exquisite detailed castings offering great value for money’. Also being launched is Versailles, a white painted bed frame with a distinctive panelled head and footboard together with two solid pine beds in antique pine and wenge finish. A new format catalogue is being unveiled at the show featuring new product photography and styling, as the company raises the bar. ‘We are looking ahead to another positive year of continued growth and to facilitate that growth we have extended the warehouse to 140,000sqft with plans for further investment in the infrastructure and supply chain to improve our customer service,’ adds Lenaghan. SHOW GUIDE

Streamlined portfolio Kettle is building on its most successful launch ‘We are particularly proud of what we have achieved with this new launch of Stamford. Last year at Interiors UK we launched Oakham that, almost overnight, became our most successful launch. We’ve used this range as the basis for Stamford, adapting it to deliver retailers even better value. Given the level of value we’d achieved with Oakham, Stamford really is quite exceptional,’ says Simon Ainge, Kettle sales director. Based on a similar blueprint to Oakham, Stamford has been resized to be suitable for smaller rooms and has a darker more ageing tone and rustic edge. Designed for living, dining and occasional use, Stamford contains 38 items including butterfly extending tables, bookcases, cupboards, wine cabinets, hall bench, laptop desk and three coffee tables. ‘Rather than stand in competition to Oakham, Stamford helps to make the clearly popular look more accessible, bringing the on-cue style and natural appeal of oak. By tailoring the dimensions of the range to fit within more compact rooms, we’ve been able to improve value and provide the retailer and homeowner with a great range that is incredibly stylish and also really quite affordable,’ says Ainge. The company has discontinued a number of ranges, which Ainge says will benefit stockists with better quality control, improved stock levels and faster supply. ‘By discontinuing some of our least popular ranges, we free up more warehouse space and simplify production, helping us to provide retailers with a hugely reliable supply chain. Our aim is to deliver consistent lead times across all our furniture, from the most popular items through to the occasional “must have” requests,

whether that is for wholesale delivery or bulk supply orders,’ says Ainge. ‘We really feel that our streamlined portfolio is more in keeping with the needs of the modern furniture retailer and with a reliable supply chain, it will give them huge confidence when it comes to working with Kettle Interiors. We want to become the benchmark in quality furniture supply for independent and multi-location furniture retailers and 2014 puts us even nearer to this ambition,’ he adds. The bed range will have four mattresses and four motion bases

La-Z-Boy is to enter the bed market and widen its upholstery look After 18 months of research and product development, La-Z-Boy is to expand into the bed market with the launch of four mattresses and four motion bases at Interiors UK. The mattresses in the Double ZZ Sleep System have double layers of springs, foam and filling. Four pocket-sprung mattresses will be available, from System 21 with 2,100 springs, through System 25 and System 27 to System 30 with 3,000 springs. Bases will have a choice of a front-opening half-storage base, with or without an additional two drawers, as well as two full storage bases, opening from either the front or the side. Each base has a choice of four fabric colourways and the standard single, double, king and super-king size options. Matching head and footboards will be available. David Winter, La-Z-Boy UK md, says: ‘We are confident there is a gap in the market to introduce an internationally recognised brand to the bed market. We have done all that we can to ensure that our products present clear and unique benefits to consumers which, in turn, will allow retailers to make a strong margin on quality branded products. ‘The La-Z-Boy brand values of comfort and quality are just as applicable to beds as they are to recliner chairs. Our range of

120

motion bed bases has a clear synergy with our reputation for innovative motion furniture. What’s more, the customer has a choice of 256 possible combinations in our beds range, which again fits with the La-Z-Boy philosophy of giving consumers an unrivalled selection of options and upholstery.’ The company is also adding to its upholstery offer with contemporary and traditional collections. ‘Our retailers have been telling us that they’d like the opportunity to offer the La-Z-Boy brand to a wider cross-section of their customers and Inspirations will allow them to do just that,’ says Dave Darragh, La-Z-Boy UK sales director. The products have a very different look and feel to the current product range and will have their own POS materials to enable retailers to present them in a separate and defined area in-store to maximise customer interest. Fresh Inspirations, with sleek lines and bold colouring in luxury fabric, leather or combination upholstery, will be available in static or power reclining options. Vintage Inspirations will be the company’s first fully static range, channelling the look and feel of its much loved classic designs. Visit: www.la-z-boy.co.uk

Wealth of experience Morris Furniture Group is going strong after 130 years in business The Morris Furniture Group celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. Since Harris Morris founded the company, supplying cabinets to cruise ships, it has accomplished such accolades as producing cinema seating for the first talking film, The Jazz Singer in the 1920s; providing a vital service during the Second World War by making casings for Barnes Wallis’s bouncing Upkeep bomb; rifle butts for the Enfield rifle and helicopter blades made from laminated wood for the Sikorsky helicopter. The company was also commissioned to design a bedroom suite as a wedding gift to the Queen and Prince Philip from the people of Scotland, which is still at Sandringham Castle. ‘Through two World Wars, many recessions, many changes of taste, culture and growing demands, the Morris Furniture Group has come through all of the struggles stronger and more equipped to deal with the challenges of today. A feat that could not have been achieved without such strong support from a network of stockists throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland,’ says Robert Morris, Morris joint-md. He says Morris Furniture is in the advantageous position of having a wealth of experience within the furniture industry that

is shared with its customers. Not only does it have the experience to lead its partners forward, but it also has the facilities – a 700,000sqft facility that can hold up to £10m worth of stock, so that it can get the bestselling products to customers quickly and efficiently. ‘Morris Furniture is proud to be celebrating its 130th anniversary and it is a great record to be proud of. It may be in a different time and place 130 years on, but our desire to offer furniture to retailers and ensure their business is prosperous has never changed. We have a continued commitment to invest in the business and also to offer in 2014 and going forward, higher stock levels, faster deliveries on key items and to offer even more flexible services for home delivery,’ adds Morris. The group will launch some furniture ranges at the NEC as well as display previous bestsellers and ranges launched last year, including the Brooklyn and Hudson dining collections from Zone, Polo from Morris and Natur from G Plan Cabinets. Relaxateeze will be bringing its largest selection of new products to the NEC with more than 20 new models. Visit: www.morrisfurniture.co.uk

Trim and tone Sasaki can help you get fit at home Sasaki will be showing its range of massage chairs. The 5 Series, two in one Tone ’n’ Massage chair combines the features of a regular massage chair but helps people trim and tone at the same time. The chair delivers an automatic or customised massage programme combining rolling, kneading, tapping and shiatsu to help users feel relaxed and refreshed, but its unique feature is that the seat turns into a vibration plate. By pressing the vibration button it can be used like a vibration plate to trim and tone. The 3D Transformer Cube is designed for homes where there isn’t room for a standard massage chair. It massages the back and waist and incorporates Sasaki’s 3D foot and calf massager. It folds away for easy storage, or can even be used as a stool in a home office or study. It adopts air pressure technology with a gentle and flexible massage touch to achieve a feeling of a multidirectional massage. Elemis recently installed 11 of Sasaki’s massage chairs at its British Airways spa at Heathrow airport. Sasaki, tel: 01908 322 888

Embracing change TCS is urging retailers to be different and claim their independence

‘As a result of the growth over the years of multiple retailers throughout the industry, the independent retailer is being squeezed more and more out of the market and finding trading even more challenging,’ says Thomas Small, TCS md. ‘Although these multiples have established themselves in the market, there are many advantages to being independent and being in a position to offer customers more of exactly what they want and need, and not merely basic offerings.’ TCS has been working with its customers to take the positives of what an independent has to offer and highlighting these to raise shoppers’ expectations and bring them into retailers’ stores. ‘One of the main advantages demonstrated by the research we have undertaken is the ability of offering what customers want with quicker lead times and more flexibility. With the multiples, one of their key weaknesses is their inability to be flexible on the available options across their product offerings,’ he explains. ‘Being solely committed to serving independent retailers throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, and working even more closely with our customers, through feedback, meeting with and getting the views and opinions of the customers, we are asking all independent retailers to claim their independence and redefine their business, and not to try to emulate what the multiples are doing.’ Small says that providing a unique point of difference from the multiples will be key to the long-term future of independent retailers. To help with this redefinition, TCS is offering marketing, servicing and quality upgrades including: providing professional free in-store studios and merchandise, six to eight week deliveries, a 24-hour dedicated customer service system and a choice of products. As well as a flexible upholstery offer in the UK and Republic of Ireland offering millions of possibilities, the company has new and improved fabric offerings, its largest stock range for immediate delivery, new Royal Coil mattress ranges exclusively available to independent retailers and not available online, and its latest dining chair collection. Over the past year TCS has been developing its tcsforless.com website to help independent retailers purchase promotional products in single orders at lower than container prices. ‘This helps small independent retailers have different promotional products on a monthly basis to compete against the larger retailers without tying up cashflow reserves,’ adds Small. Meeting customer needs GFA listens and reacts to what its stockists want

Global Furniture Alliance will unveil a host of upholstery models, and for retailers unable to visit them at the NEC its new showvan will be touring stockists after the event. The company has enjoyed annual growth of 10%-15% in recent years, which it says comes from listening to what retailers want and reacting accordingly. This year’s offer will be no different, and will see an increase in contemporary shapes and fabric chairs after these were requested by stockists. There will also be more lift and rise recliners and GFA will introduce its first Belgian fabric. Among the new models, Marrakesh is a swivel chair available in five colours including crimson, with a natural base. Copenhagen will have two PU colours: black and taupe and one fabric/PU mix with a star base. Zurich’s colours include red and black and it has a chrome base, Casablanca is a pushback recliner while Tuscany is a promotional model. The company has also switched to a preferred supplier model for components, giving it more control and improved quality. It has continued to invest in spare parts and has increased its UK warehousing. Visit: www.gfa.uk.com

It says: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a talented group of individuals while at the same time giving something back. We can’t wait to see the outcome.’ Park Grove Design, creator of award-winning care home designs, will also work with Out of the Dark to create an inclusive design space. Park Grove works by the ethos that ‘great interior design can enhance the quality of people’s lives’, and it is this mantra that the company follows when creating its care home designs. Lori Pinkerton-Rolet, Park Grove Design director and former president of the British Institute of Interior Design, says: ‘That we have the opportunity to work with such a worthwhile group as Out of the Dark and Interiors UK makes this a unique opportunity and we are very much looking forward to the collaborative results.’ The fourth collaboration will see architect and designer Naomi Cleaver create an original design for student accommodation. ‘This is an extremely admirable project and I have been hoping to work with Out of the Dark since I met them at Interiors UK. I am delighted to be collaborating on this installation which I hope will inspire others to work with this great organisation,’ she says. Visit: www.outofthedark.org.uk

Out of the Dark returns to the show Out of the Dark, a charity that trains and educates young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in the art of furniture production, is showing for the second time after first taking part in 2012. The charity has collaborated with four designers to create four rooms, all with different briefs. Each room will contain exclusive pieces by the charity, which takes pre-loved items of furniture and revamps them with a contemporary twist, creating striking new products. This unique show set is ideal for specialist contractors and interior designers to gain both the inspiration and insight that a real life project entails while allowing Out of the Dark clients to diversify their skills and gain mentoring from some of the industry’s best designers. Modern British lighting and furniture distributor Deadgood, known for providing products with personality to its clients, has assisted in the design for a boardroom. ‘Out of the Dark operates on the premise of creating an

Joe Buttigieg, Bucks New University, Contemporary Furniture Design: Tess Chair ‘The Tess chair links the combination of structure and upholstery. The lamination of materials is a rational and economical use of resources. This process of making responds to the quantity of waste produced in conventional upholstery. This design started its journey through initially creating paper models derived from techniques such as origami. The crisp edges created when folding and making these paper models has influenced the geometry and design of this chair. The design has no curves and is a two-dimensional construction, then transformed from a flat object into a three-dimensional geometric form when zipped together.

Charlotte Millett, Bucks New University, Contemporary Furniture Design: Burst ‘Burst is an easy chair or two-seater sofa twisted into shape and strapped in place with a leather belt. Through bending the foam a precarious visual pressure is created, giving the impression that the sofa may at any moment burst at the seams. I was inspired to try to change the conventional use of foam and fabric by forcefully manipulating and constraining the foam to its limits. Through experimentation a functional form evolved which when covered in pure wool and harnessed with a strap created a lounger into which one felt you could collapse and relax.’

Elizabeth Ret, National School of Furniture, Furniture Design: You've Been Framed Desk Chair ‘The You’ve Been Framed desk and chair were designed in response to my MA thesis research. Here, I discussed how people’s belongings can potentially speak a thousand words about a person. While infusing my interest in unused space, this furniture not only holds a large quantity of objects, but aesthetically highlights a person’s things through its chamfered edge, mimicking a photo frame. Plus, its contrasting neutral outside faces to its brightly coloured inside, symbolises someone’s hidden personality.’

Alexander Mueller, London Metropolitan University, Furniture and Product Design: Woven Easy Chair ‘The Woven Easy Chair uses straight lines and angular planes to create a sense of movement within the chair’s form. The seating pattern is created by weaving waxed cord around an ash timber structure. The design is based on traditional weaving techniques reinterpreted with inspiration from Naum Gabo’s Construction in Space works and straight line drawings. The geometric seating pattern was created by deconstructing traditional weaving methods and examining the relation between the frame, the cord and the end user.’

Elizabeth Jane Winstanley, Manchester School of Art, Embroidery: Illusions ‘I am a designer with an interest in illusions. Experimenting with alternative media, pushing the boundaries of embroidery I create illusions of line and colour by utilising pattern and light emitting wire. My process always begins by utilising everyday objects, often recycled materials. This particular project began with the inner tubes of pens. Upon building these units together I noticed that, when I layered the tubes they created illusions of line. I particularly visualise developing my work into interior features such as hotel and club lighting, furniture and wall pieces. I intend to develop into the realms of domestic products as well as interactive installations.’

Rosie Cook, Swansea Metropolitan University, Surface Pattern Design: Future Brights Collection ‘Future Brights is a versatile and stylish collection of interior fabrics, inspired by a passion for colour and form. Artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Heron informed the initial collages and mark-making exercises and this, alongside a strong desire to create innovative and exciting fabrics, has led to the collection. This is a commercial and practical collection suitable for both domestic and corporate interiors. Each pattern has been designed to be displayed at the customers’ requirements, either alone as a wall hanging or together for use as curtains, wall and surface coverings.’

Seema Shah, London College of Communication, Surface Design: Wooden Tiles ‘Using inspiration from the natural flaws and blemishes in wood, I created a range of hand-burnt wooden tiles to be used as wallcoverings. I experimented with burning on balsa wood by using different sized tips to create a variety of tones and textures. The tiles were the base point, which I then developed further by creating a range of “burnt” wallpaper designs. Keeping with the organic tone of the work, texture is the focus of this collection combined with the natural tones of wood. The colour palette primarily consists of various shades of brown, which contributes to the rustic and natural feel to the pieces.’

Rebecca Tudor-Price, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Textiles for Interior and Fashion: Barbules Paradise ‘These reflective floor and wall lamps form part of my Barbules Paradise collection, inspired by exotic birds and their habitat. My aim was to create lamps that can reflect the patterns of my fabrics while giving a contemporary feel to an interior. The coordinating wall lights allow the rich hues of the exotic birds to be experienced while illuminated or unlit in a more traditional pictorial format. When designing these lamps I focused on the plumage creating abstract patterns from feathers in flight. The reflective surfaces are laser etched to allow backlighting to illuminate the intricate patterns on to surrounding surfaces.’

Chloe Atkins, Arts University Bournemouth, Textiles: Hunger Games ‘A professional collection of interior fabrics and surface designs that reflect the themes found within the book, The Hunger Games. Using hand prints, transferred through to digital prints, laser cutting and etching, an autumn/winter collection of luxurious and textured interior based fabrics have been created using colour trends found on Style Sight of A/W 2013. Pursuing the use of The Hunger Games allowed the opportunity to create and relay my own impressions of the narrative story being conveyed, the hunting and apocalyptic world of District 12, in conjunction with the perfect, clinical stainless steel, eccentric style of The Capitol.’

Liz Ramsey, University of Derby, Fashion and Textiles: Cool Heat ‘Cool Heat is a lively and versatile collection of woven textiles, exploring the baked earth and cool water of the Mediterranean in bold colours and fluid hand-worked graphics. The designs come directly from the land and heritage of southern Italy – its buildings, ancient artefacts and ceramics. Otranto and the Lucanian Dolomites are the inspiration for the colour palette. The hot earth yields deep aubergine-brown, pale cream and soft jasmine. The vibrant aquamarine is taken from the sea and reflected sky and partnered with lime peel green and the green of pine tree fronds.’

Clair Whyman, Manchester School of Art, Textiles: Urban Perspectives ‘As a designer I have a passion for colour, pattern and breaking away from the norm. Urban Perspectives is a collection of handwoven fabric designs inspired by perspectives and contrasts in modern architecture. I use my camera as a drawing tool and manipulate angles to discover hidden patterns in normal, everyday buildings. With careful use of colour, proportion and pattern, these designs challenge the preconceptions of woven fabric by drawing your eye to the strong geometric forms and shapes that run through the collection.’

Joanna Hughes, University for the Creative Arts Farnham, Textiles for Interiors and Fashion: Geometric Construction ‘The Geometric Construction project has been influenced by contemporary architecture, contrasted with historical events: for this particular project a trip to Auschwitz contributed to the designs. Also looking at Russian Constructivism, artists including Alexander Rodchenko and Lyubov Popova. Throughout the project I used masking tape instead of screens; this allowed me to be really experimental with my printing and develop new designs each time I printed as I wouldn’t be able to get the same design exactly the same again. It was important to focus on contrast alongside the Russian Constructivism theme, using yellow alongside black and discharge stands out boldly and creates a very unique print.’

Furnishing Accessories Bilge Nur Saltik, Royal College of Art, Design Products: Share Food Containers ‘Sharing food is not encouraged in every culture, in fact it may be considered inappropriate behaviour at a dinner party. In my home city of Istanbul, sharing food is an expression of generosity and pleasure. As a playful response to the dining etiquette of the 21st century, I developed Share.Food: a series of ceramic dishes that would facilitate the sharing of food, therefore inspiring communication at the table. The angled bottom of each plate and cup allows the vessels to rotate and adjust their position, thereby providing access to multiple diners and encouraging people to share food. It is a nice gesture to tip the plate and offer your food to someone. Opening your plate to someone is kind, surprising and playful.’

John Hollington, York St John University, Product Design: Elica Pendant Light ‘Elica is a contemporary room pendant light manufactured from fluted polypropylene sheets, laser cut to shape and assembled by hand to create a helical pattern, giving a distinctive light source. The design is appropriated from traditional drum style pendants, with the appliance of new materials providing the opportunity to create a light with a unique appearance. It can be manufactured in various sizes in either white, black or coloured polypropylene.’

Juliette Bigley, Cass School of Art, Silversmithing and Jewellery: Whirling Beakers ‘Objects and the ways in which we relate to them fascinate me. Whirling Beakers invites you to interact with a functional object through play and through use, the movement of the hand and the movement of the piece mirroring the flow of conversation around a table. The beakers – hallmarked and made of Britannia Silver – move and can be rolled around the edge, but will not fall as the rim of the beaker acts as a stop. The beakers always sit at an angle, hinting at the conversation that their movement seeks to stimulate.’

Clea Jentsch, Kingston University, Product and Furniture Design: Desk Tidy ‘Each piece in this collection of pared down, folded steel desk tidies has a twist in how it works or how it is used, affording secondary functions. The range includes two tape dispensers, two pen tidies, an in-out-tray, a pencil shavings collector and a tray for pins and elastic bands. The Desk Tidies are easy to manufacture, being laser cut, folded and then powder coated in zinc yellow and mint green. The project started with developing Tape Dispenser S, which was folded from a single piece of mild steel and lets the tape rotate around the steel rather than fitting around a central wheel. More stationery objects were developed using the same material and process to form a collection of tabletop items. The ideas and nets were first quickly sketched out and then made directly in mild steel. Some of the forms actually came directly from the making process itself, for

140

Interiors Monthly January 2014

example the angled front of the Tidy originates from the fact that in that size it wasn’t possible to bend the last edge to a 90° angle. However, when the model turned out like that, I really liked the angled edge, giving access to the Tidy and providing a pivoting point: when you press the edge down, the items in the tidy slide out and are offered to the user.’

Benefits of networking Protection plans have become an integral part of customer service Once thought of as just an add-on sale to boost margins for retailers, and viewed with suspicion by consumers, protection plans have been transformed into an integral part of customer service. For Richard Gretton, Castelan commercial director, the focus is demonstrating how it adds value. ‘More and more it is our intention to show how we add value with every interaction, be it POS, training, answering the call from the consumer or the home visit,’ he says.

‘By employing our own service network of 70 Furniture Care Network technicians we can ensure fantastic service delivery. You can only do that when you employ the network to ensure the consistency of service. ‘Retailers understand this. It is about delivering what the retailer promises. The value to the consumer is that when they need the service, for the response to be fast, efficient and of a high standard.’ And retailers seem to be listening to

Castelan’s message. House of Fraser became a client in October following ScS last spring and several independent retailers are signing up every week, along with growth among online retailers. As well as increasing numbers of retailers offering its protection plans, Gretton adds that it has seen strong growth particularly with care and repair products. Prevention is the best policy Stroolmount’s flooring protection products continue to gain favour Mrs Smith has visited several furniture stores and after much consideration has ordered her new dining table and chairs from you. The day of delivery arrives and unfortunately one of your regular delivery men is sick. One of the salesmen is deputised to stand in for him but unfortunately when he is helping to take the table inside he drops it, leaving a nasty scratch on Mrs Smith’s dining room floor. Understandably she is not happy and you have a bill for repairing her floor. Situations such as this can be avoided if Stroolmount’s range of flooring protection products are used, says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md.

‘Retailers are finding that prevention is by far the best policy and realising that for very little money they can prevent unwanted claims while improving customer service. They can also offer the protectors to their customers,’ she says. Stroolmount’s range features products for protecting carpets, vinyl, wood, laminate and tiles. At the heart of the range is the QuickClick Glides collection of products, developed by German firm Wagner Systems. These are permanently screwed to the base of legs and are available in sizes from 17mm to 50mm and in several pack sizes. Also available are Move It pads to protect floors and make it easier to move heavy furniture and appliances. ‘2013 was a very busy year for us with new clients including a major furniture chain and a market leading flooring manufacturer,’ adds Finch. Sell better not just more Shoppers want increased value from their protection plans Phil Griffin, Guardsman md, is clear in his message: ‘Consumers want increased value from warranties, need clear details of what is covered and need to understand the value of a Guardsman policy and the peace of mind that it delivers. To provide this Guardsman is redrafting policy terms and conditions, POS materials and our extensive retailer training programme in order to both improve communication and drive sales for our retail partners. Our research consistently shows that if the price proposition is right, and the policy is explained properly during the sales process, then more than of 70% of consumers value the Guardsman offer when buying upholstery. ‘Offering a protection plan early in the sales process also opens up material and colour choices that some consumers might have dismissed. For example, they may have sufficient confidence to go for a light fabric model rather than dark leather as the plan alleviates their concerns of a spilt coffee or takeaway meal on the sofa on a Saturday evening.’ Guardsman is also adapting to new market trends, providing training for technicians on the repair of the latest high gloss

finishes and developing new stain removal chemicals to increase the types of upholstery stains which can be removed at the first visit. ‘This is important to consumers as they may have to take time off work to be home when the technician visits, so fixing at the first occasion provides the least inconvenience. We have increased our network of independent technicians and the Safeclean cleaning franchise is expanding. Having an independent network allows us to provide the right person for each job based on their skills, rather than simply sending a general technician that happens to be in the area and on the payroll,’ explains Griffin. ‘From the initial phone call or contact from consumers seeking our assistance, we are trying to find the best, quickest and most efficient solution. For some we send a specialist stain removal or repair technician, whereas for other cases we know straight away we either need to order parts or even replacements.’ Griffin says increased media and regulatory attention on the sector and economic downturn has seen an increase in claims volumes, but the mix of claims has remained broadly the same. ‘It would appear that many consumers have deferred making significant investments in furniture, so as a consequence are looking for their furniture to last longer and are seeking maximum value from their Guardsman warranties. This pent-up demand for furniture investments should provide the opportunity to not only sell more furniture as the market recovery continues, but that consumers will continue to value the benefits of a Guardsman Protection Plan,’ he adds. Protect the look

Leather can fail if badly maintained

‘The thing that consumers spend the most time considering when buying furniture is appearance. If customers were blindfolded when they entered a store would they buy the same piece of furniture? Highly unlikely, so the preservation of that all-important appearance is clearly going to feature at some point in the buying decision,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard and Leather Master UK md. Staingard and Leather Master are continually developed products designed to ensure that consumers can be confident they will be able to protect and maintain their furniture. With Staingard’s training and in-store support sales staff are well equipped to advise customers, gain trust and ultimately the sale. ‘We recently launched the latest versions of our fabric and carpet protectors, taking protection and hygiene control to new levels. Most leathers might feature some form of inherent protection when new but if abused and badly maintained can fail all too quickly, resulting in damaged and unsightly furniture,’ he says. Dyeguard was developed to ensure most of the common problems associated with general use that can cause damage are eliminated, including dye transfer for example from jeans, ink marks, general soiling and the transfer of bodily oils, cosmetics and medications. Damage is easily prevented,

Feel-good factor Since its foundation in 1994, Jan te Lintelo’s creation Linteloo has had two founding principles: fun and simplicity Jan te Lintelo was born in Haaksbergen in the eastern part of The Netherlands in January 1954 into a family of furniture retailers. His parents started the business te Lintelo Wonen which his brother Tonny turned into one of the most successful stores in the region with leading international furniture collections. In his spare time Jan helped his parents in the shop and began to appreciate the craftsmanship of furniture-making. He attended college in

Rotterdam and soon started his career with cabinetmaker Pastoe in Utrecht. After several years with Pastoe and later Gelderland he decided to start his own company Linteloo. Its first collection was previewed at Van Tellingen Interieurs in Zeist in December 1993, where he showed new designs by young designers Edward van Vliet, Roderick Vos and Roland Costeris. The collection was well received by the press and Jan won the prestigious Mobilia award in 1994 for his initiative. Dutch design was becoming a world brand in the 1990s but Jan wanted to go even further and started a new concept in 1995 with the now famous feel-good factor. The design for easy living with comfortable made to measure sofas and chairs was a big success in The

Netherlands and soon other countries followed. Today Linteloo has showrooms in Zeist, Cologne and Milan and about 250 stockists across the globe. Part of its 2014 collection will be introduced at Design Post during IMM Cologne and the remainder at its Via Tortona showroom during ISalone. Visit: www.linteloo.com

Showcentre time The number of Vale-Bridgecraft’s regional showcentres has reached double figures The opening in Felsted, Essex of ValeBridgecraft’s 10th regional showcentre completes a period of significant investment in the company’s future. ‘About £4.5m has been spent on brand advertising since 2001, directly raising awareness levels with the public. The regional showcentres create sales that have been lost through the gradual erosion of independent stockists capable of promoting to Vale-Bridgecraft’s niche customer base,’ says Stuart Chadwick, Vale-Bridgecraft md. Existing stockists benefit from

showcentre referrals as well as sales from their own shopfloor displays, he adds. ‘Bona-fide stockists supply a steady stream of customers to the showcentres in the knowledge that the visit usually concludes with the customer upgrading on product or fabric. Showcentre sales account for 50% of the company’s turnover presently, representing a stable foundation for the future as the economy improves,’ he says. New models are previewed at the regional showcentres allowing money normally spent at exhibitions to be

invested in discounted floor displays for the stockists. ‘We launched five ranges during 2013 and all are repeating well.’ A further £600,000 will be invested in advertising this year. The company will sponsor Channel 4 TV’s Countdown on 6 January and this will be supported with national magazine and newspaper advertising throughout the year. The Felsted showcentre is about seven miles from Chelmsford and will serve stockists in the area and is within easy reach of London. Visit: www.valebridgecraft.co.uk

Bespoke comfort Collins and Hayes has more than 140 years of manufacturing heritage Collins and Hayes has been designing, developing and manufacturing furniture for more than 140 years. Every order is individually made to the customer’s bespoke specification by the company’s craftsmen and women at its purposebuilt factory in Hastings, East Sussex. ‘Our wealth of knowledge and well established reputation ensures a deep understanding of the materials and skills required, which culminates in beautifully designed and crafted furniture. We offer a multitude of options to enable customers to create their own unique piece of furniture,’ says Martin Huggins, Collins and Hayes md. Comfort is particular to each individual and, for that reason, the company offers a selection of seat cushion interiors: foam with a polyester fibre wrap, foam with a feather wrap, feather or polyester fibre. Back cushions, pillow cushions and scatter cushions are feather-filled as standard but, in cases of feather allergy, this filling can be substituted. ‘Comfort and durability are essential, and to this end all of our furniture designs are archived, which means that nothing is discontinued. Even though there are 33 models displayed in our

current brochure, our philosophy now is that as long as we have the patterns for any past model it will be available to our customers. So, should customers wish to add to, refresh or replace their favourite furniture, they can,’ says Huggins. Thanks to its manufacturing facility, the company offers a Bespoke at Collins and Hayes service so the sofa’s width can be tailored if needed to fit a specific place. Arms and backs can be unbolted, where specified, to accommodate

restricted access in delivery and it also offers a customer’s own fabric service. ‘Collins and Hayes is certainly going from strength to strength as one of the few remaining, truly British, upholstered furniture manufacturers with a genuine regard for their customers. We are extremely proud to be able to offer such a wide and wonderful choice of beautifully designed and stylish products,’ adds Huggins. Visit: www.collinsandhayes.com

Online performance Fibreline’s two seating brands are getting more exposure

The success of Encore-Fibre and Encore-Feather has prompted Fibreline to launch a website for the brands: www.encorecushion.co.uk. ‘Part of the project was to produce a video that explained the benefits of Encore construction. Boring you might think – well think again? We are hoping the website and video will bring a new understanding of what Encore is and the benefits it can provide. If we can entertain people at the same time so much the better,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. He says that when Fibreline launched Encore in 2010 it could not have foreseen the success of its seating system. Encore-Fibre has the look and feel of fibre with the recovery and durability of foam and has been awarded the FIRA Gold seal of approval. In FIRA tests it outperformed all other fibre cushions. The range has now been expanded to include Encore-Feather. This has a feather-soft feel and looks similar to a feather cushion but has greater recovery and durability. It is constructed using grade A duck feathers. A four-year guarantee against flattening is standard across the range. ‘An Encore seat cushion has the added advantage of being lighter than a similar sized feather or fibre cushion. It is therefore easier to pick up and plump. In fact, altogether less frequent plumping is required as the simple action of regular turning the cushion is enough to maintain its performance,’ adds Prudhoe. Visit: www.encorecushion.co.uk

Filling a gap in the UK market Established in 1982, Fibreline was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for use in the UK upholstery market. Over the years it has grown to be a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather and foam cushions. ‘As a manufacturer of all three fillings we have been at the leading

edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm,’ explains Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. ‘We intend to continue to be innovators in this market using our skills and the very latest technology to stay at the forefront of cushion design. At home at work Making workplaces look like homes A few years ago flexible workplaces or office cocooning, were interiors buzz words. This was replaced by working from home, but according to Steve Symons, BuzziSpace founder (pictured), home working is the next trend, with workplaces looking more like homes. ‘If working from home was seen as the holy grail until fairly recently, today home working at the office is the new credo. Just think of the trendy working environments which Google, Facebook, Samsung or Yahoo create to give their employees a homely and comfortable feeling at the office. After all, why would you want to sit around at home when your working environment is sociable and welcoming, offers a trendy food bar and the best coffee too,’ he says. ‘We actually aim to be pioneers in collaborative furniture: we design furniture that optimises public spaces. These spaces vary from offices and hospital waiting rooms to hotel lobbies. We also want to bring a homely feel to the office: bringing the home to the office is our motto. By designing attractive, comfortable furniture that is used in the office, we are helping to create the ideal atmosphere in the workplace.’ Its Authentic Nordic collection grew

Anniversary editions Old Charm turns 90 this year Old Charm celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2014 and is justly proud of its history. The firm was set up by Herbert Wood in 1924 in the East End of London. ‘From small beginnings “HW” experimented with many different materials and styles and culminated in the fine oak furniture that we now know as Old Charm,’ says Malcolm Nix, Wood Bros sales and marketing director. The company moved to larger premises in Ware, Hertfordshire in 1956, and business flourished both in the UK and abroad. Today the collections have expanded to cover a variety of styles, all in oak, but with different finishes from light to dark. The current ranges are Old Charm, Chatsworth, Ludlow and Hertford. ‘To celebrate our 90th year, we have designed some stunning new models, are bringing out a special edition 90th anniversary brochure, and have increased the choice of finishes to eight to include a unique distressing method called Heritage,’ he says. These new products will be on view on the company’s showvan from the early part of this year. A number of special offers will be available throughout the year, which stockists will be informed about through its newsletter. ‘All this is in addition to our Customer Charter, and the continued development of branded galleries sets 2014 up to be a positive and busy year,’ Nix adds. TOM MANNION

PEER LINDGREEN

Born in Tunisia, Tom Dixon moved to England in 1963. He dropped out of Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band Funkapolitan before teaching himself welding and going on to produce furniture. Dixon rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture. He set up Space as a creative think-tank and shop front for himself and other young designers. By the late 1980s, he was working for Cappellini for which he designed the iconic S chair. In the 1990s, he became a household name and Jack, his polypropylene ‘sitting, stacking, lighting thing’ designed for his own company Eurolounge, was a symbol of the age. Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran learned their skills as art director and graphic designer working in family furniture businesses. Their chance meeting over the course of a Shanghai hotel project marked the beginning of a collaboration that has continued under the name Dimore Studio. The creative work of this interior design firm satisfies clients’ need for a more sophisticated identity, those wishing to distinguish themselves by crossing boundaries. By avoiding the use of superfluous or provocative forms, the firm succeeds in creating a high-impact identity composed of simple and sophisticated signs, evoking faraway places or distant times, counterpoised between softness and rigidity, light and shadow. The ultimate objective is to help the client be truly distinctive, possessing an enduring identity that survives the ceaselessly changing market. Dimore Studio’s creative atmosphere seeks harmonious coexistence of design, art, architecture and fashion to produce spaces that are warm, welcoming, functional and striking, with a truly unique personality.

Inside the sky den

Reach for the sky Häfele UK came to the rescue of a charity’s project to build an outdoor sky den in the Kielder Water and Forest Park in Northumberland, as part of the George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces TV show on Channel 4. The project was launched on behalf of

Calvert Trust, a charity that helps people with disabilities to achieve their potential through outdoor activities, and involved creating a fully-accessible room of only 14sqm that could fit two single beds, a table and chairs to seat four people in addition to ample storage facilities. ‘One particular problem we were working with was how to create a mechanism in the rectangle pod that allowed all visitors, including wheelchair users, to raise and lower the kitchen counters in addition to the sink, draining board and hob. It wasn’t long before we realised that Häfele has several

Donating bedding for the homeless Bedding manufacturer John Cotton Group helped homeless people in Leeds stay warm by donating bedding supplies to the city’s St George’s Crypt. ‘John Cotton has long-standing ties with St George’s Crypt and we’re very proud to support them in their mission to provide comfort and assistance to the homeless and disadvantaged,’ says Gary Gary Johnson and Cheryl Harrington, St George’s Crypt lead fundraiser Johnson, John Cotton business manager. St George’s Crypt has helped tens of thousands of people get their lives back on track since opening its doors in 1930. The Crypt relies on the help of local businesses to assist the 200 people they see on average every day.

mechanisms designed for this exact purpose,’ says designer William Hardie. Various hinges and catches were used to create access flaps within the confined spaces of the sky den – flap hinges are designed to sit flush with the surfaces to maximise the space available for storage, which made them ideal for the project. Push catches allowed for push-open doors and panels and eliminated the need for handles that would protrude into the valuable space within the building.

Big screen hero Flooring supplier Designer Contracts has donated carpets to a community not-forprofit cinema, set up to provide affordable tickets to the young, old and disadvantaged. The Jam Jar Cinema in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, is owned and run by volunteers and has benefited from carpets donated by Designer Contracts for the main cinema area and stairs. The cinema takes its name from the days when cinema owners were encouraged to take jam jars as payment for entry during the 1920s and 1930s. Today the cinema will discount a ticket when presented with a used, clean jam jar.
