EDITOR’S COMMENT

Ready, steady, go January’s annual flurry of exhibitions is about to get under way as a host of shows get the year started with a bang Passport at the ready? Taxi booked for the pre-dawn trip to the airport? Hotel details checked? A book in the hand luggage in case of delayed flights? If the preparations are all complete, you’re ready for the plethora of January shows. In the way that small children look forward to a December visit from a certain gentleman in a red suit, the start of the year wouldn’t be the same without being reacquainted with Frankfurt, London, Hannover, Cologne, the NEC (and Paris for some) as thousands of exhibitors at Heimtextil, Top Drawer, Domotex, imm Cologne, the January Furniture Show and Maison et Objet vie for your attention. Domotex has already given a taste of what to expect with its Innovations@domotex

selection and hopefully the others will be equally awash with new products. Meanwhile, Headlam says its post-EU referendum prices rises have had no impact on demand. As has been said before, flooring is an infrequent purchase and the average consumer doesn’t know the cost of carpet or laminate. If the increases mean the carpet is £31 per sqm rather than £29.99 it doesn’t seem to matter. But it does perhaps beg the question of whether retailers have been charging as much as they could. The British Furniture Consortium’s 2017 manifesto is unlikely to have been on Theresa May’s festive reading list (even though it contains many good points on Brexit, such as employing Europeans, access to the single market and changes to trade rules). But one item that perhaps should be higher up the agenda is updating the flammability regulations. This has been ongoing since 2008 and there isn’t even a government implementation timetable. Victoria spending £20m on Australian underlay firm Dunlop won’t directly affect UK retailers but it’s bound to have left some UK companies disappointed that Victoria’s funds haven’t headed in their direction.

NEWS

Fifth year of growth as Ikea’s UK sales hit £1.72bn Ikea has enjoyed its fifth consecutive year of UK sales growth and increased its market share. Sales jumped by 8.9% in the year to 31 August, reaching £1.72bn. It says market share rose from 7.5% to 8.2%. The introduction of UK-standard bed, mattress and bedlinen sizes last year saw mattress sales increase by 18.8%, the biggest growth product in 2015/2016. It invested £4m in rebuilding the cooking and eating departments in all UK stores and saw an increase in cookware sales of 17.9%. Its revamped website increased sales by 31%, now making up 13.4% of turnover. Store footfall rose 3%. ‘Achieving our fifth consecutive year of growth is something we’re extremely proud of and demonstrates the success of our values-driven business, commitment to our people, the planet, and our customers,’ says Gillian Drakeford, Ikea UK country retail manager. ‘Our stores and website have a different, although integrated, role to play. Our customers are increasingly using both channels to complete their purchasing journey so we’ve focused on ensuring this experience is as seamless as possible. ‘Low prices are a cornerstone for what Ikea stands for so we will always work on our business model to provide good value for our customers. At this current time we are not

Ikea has grown market share

planning to increase prices and are staying close to what the market says and what customers expect from us. ‘In a world with so much uncertainty, the sense of home becomes even more important. But, increasingly people can’t afford to buy their homes, so a home isn’t necessarily about ownership, but creating that environment, with accessories or everyday items to feel like that.’ Drakeford says the chain has scope to double its market share.

Dunlop Flooring is latest Victoria buy Victoria has added to its acquisition list with Australian underlay manufacturer and branded wood, laminate and LVT flooring distributor Dunlop Flooring. The group is paying £20m in cash to Pacific Brands, which was recently bought by US firm Hanesbrands. Dunlop generated EBITDA of £3.5m on sales of £30m in the year to 30 June. ‘Dunlop is another important and

strategic acquisition for us, and one which reinforces our strategy of targeting earnings enhancing acquisitions in addition to organic growth. It will make a positive contribution to Victoria’s profits while diversifying our market exposure,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman. ‘Post completion, nearly 30% of Victoria’s earnings will come from

Australia, a dynamic and growing market and a strong economy,’ he says. Dunlop’s management will stay with the company. Victoria says its net debt ratio will be less than times two after the deal is completed: ‘a very comfortable level especially given the group’s cash generation and well within Victoria’s stated acceptable level of debt.’

Flammability proposals concern

Flammability laws form part of BFC’s manifesto

6

Interiors Monthly January 2017

As part of its 2017 manifesto, the British Furniture Confederation has called on the government to take notice of industry concerns over its proposals to amend the flammability regulations. The BFC supports the government’s desire to see a reduction in the use of fire retardant chemicals, so long as it does

not compromise safety. But it says the current proposals could have the opposite effect, as well as being more difficult to police or to achieve consistent results in comparison to the current state of affairs. It also called for an implementation timetable to be published.

NEWS

Carpetright pushes on with new format as sales fall Carpetright is to accelerate the roll-out of its latest store format after suffering a drop in first half sales and profits. The chain had planned to convert 100 of its 430 stores by the end of April but has pushed this to 150. It wants all stores converted by 2018. UK sales dropped by 6.4% to £186.5m in the six months to 31 October. Like for like sales declined by 2.9%. Underlying operating margin fell from 4.7% to 2.6% as the cost of the weakness of sterling and responding to competition with offers such as free fitting hit home. Beds now make up 9.1% of sales and 18% of sales are now on interest free credit. UK like for like sales in the 10 weeks to 10 December were up 2.6%. ‘After 10 consecutive quarters of positive like for like sales growth, it is naturally disappointing to report a negative result for the first half of this financial year. Despite the reported headwinds, we remain confident that our strategy, based on extensive customer research and proven through store trials, is on track to deliver significant benefits in the medium and longer term,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo. ‘We have had a challenging first half – the full impact of the UK decision to leave the EU remains unclear; consumer demand remains uneven; the market is extremely competitive and the impact of currency movements have combined to give us substantial trading headwinds. To address these challenges and revitalise the business, we have a programme of activities under way, but these will take time to deliver their full effect.

10

Wilf Walsh has speeded up the format roll-out

‘The positive impact at the initial 49 refurbished stores has given us the confidence to accelerate this part of the programme. We are now scheduling investment to 150 stores by the year end – 50% more than the original target and representing over one third of our UK estate. ‘We have made an encouraging start to the second half with a return to like for like sales growth in both businesses [UK and Europe]. As we enter the important January trading period, we remain comfortable with the range of market expectations [a consensus of £16.1m ranging from £13.9m to £18.5m]. Looking longer term, we are confident that our plan to build on Carpetright’s strong foundations, to modernise the business and to ensure we capitalise as market leader to the full is still on track,’ adds Walsh.

Oka opening

Dunelm snaps up Worldstores

Furniture and accessories retailer Oka is set to open its 15th branch this spring with a 7,800sqft store on the Edgbaston Village development, a mile from Birmingham city centre. ‘The high end brand is the perfect fit and reflects our aspirations to establish a premium leisure and lifestyle location in the heart of Edgbaston, benefitting those who live in the area while attracting new visitors from far and wide,’ says Mark Lee, chief executive of Calthorpe Estates, Edgbaston Village owner. ‘Oka’s new store will provide the best of both worlds. It will have a large double-fronted open plan ground floor retail space with a modern yet traditional fit out on the upper two floors.’ It opened its first store in 2000.

Dunelm has completed an £8.5m prepack deal buying loss-making £100m turnover etail group Worldstores. Worldstores, Achica and Kiddicare were put into administration so Dunelm could buy the assets of the trio’s parent company WS Group. Dunelm plans to inject up to £15m into WS Group to fund historic working capital and manage disruption for suppliers and customers. It will also pay about £3m of ancillary and transaction related costs that are expected to be identified separately. WS Group had a pre-tax loss of £6.5m in the year to 31 January 2015, and Dunelm expects losses to be between £5m and £10m in the year to 1 July 2017, before breaking even the following year.

Interiors Monthly January 2017

It says combining ranges, buying terms and delivery will benefit it by £10m a year after that. ‘We are excited by this opportunity to accelerate the growth of our Internet operation, more than doubling its size, and enhancing our position as the destination homewares retailer in the UK, both online and offline. Between the store network, broad product range and strong brand that Dunelm has built and Worldstores’ extensive homewares and furniture offer and unique platform for next day delivery and flash sales, we will strengthen our leading position,’ says John Browett, Dunelm ceo. WS Group management will continue to run operations, including founders Richard Tucker and Joe Murray.

Headlam management reshuffle as sales rise Headlam has reorganised the management responsibilities for its residential flooring companies based at its Tamworth distribution centre. Martin West, former Kingsmead Carpets general manager, assumes overall responsibility for all residential businesses. Manx Carpets and Mr Tomkinson will be merged into Manx Tomkinson. Mike Dobson, former Mr Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich general manager, will have overall control of Manx Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich, which will become a standalone business with its own dedicated sales force and a wider product portfolio. ‘The new Manx Tomkinson business will draw together the synergies of product, POS and market presence to create a new major player to service the independent carpet retailer,’ says the company. Graham Harris, former Manx Carpets and Clarendon general manager, will lead Kingsmead Carpets, assisted by the existing sales management team of Clint Carver and Ian Shopland, while retaining his role at Clarendon. Clarendon will focus on key market segments via its direct sales force, while marketing in the remaining areas via Manx Tomkinson. Meanwhile, the group has seen no adverse reaction to its

post-Brexit price increases and expects to make more profit than analyst forecasts. It says it has been able to maintain the rises it introduced on imported products. ‘The price increases which, when fully implemented, averaged 3.5% have remained in place since their introduction in August 2016 and, pleasingly, appear to have had no adverse impact on residential sector revenue. As a result of this, and due to continued volatility in foreign exchange rates, it is the company’s intention to keep these price increases in place going forward,’ it says. UK like for like revenue in the second half of the year to 31 October 2016 was up approximately 4.8% (of which 0.8% relates to price increases introduced since August) against the same period the previous year, and is comparable with the outperformance achieved in the first half of 2016. Trading during November 2016 has maintained this trend. ‘Trading in the fourth quarter, traditionally Headlam’s busiest trading period and characterised by a high volume of small residential orders, is continuing well,’ it says. The company says that if trade continues as expected, underlying profits for the year to 31 December will be higher than stock market forecasts. However, headline profit figures may not beat the previous year’s once the pay-off for former chief executive Tony Brewer is included.

Peter Sharpe Peter Sharpe, Furlong Flooring md of its Dartford distribution centre, died peacefully on 3 December after a brave and defiant fight against motor neurone disease. He was 49. After starting his career at Gripperrods, he spent six years at DLW as commercial manager before he was approached to join Hall’s Floorings as commercial director in 1997. In 2008, he joined Furlong Flooring as sales director. ‘Peter was a key member of the commercial team that has developed Furlong Flooring into an industry leading manufacturer. His colleagues, customers and friends in the industry will have many fond memories of working with him and at this difficult time I am confident that he would want us to remember the good times we have all shared. He will be missed by us all,’ says Malcolm Gibson, Furlong Flooring group md.

Profits jump at Barker & Stonehouse

Sharpe is survived by his wife Jo-ann and children Molly and George. In 2013 he was asked what was the best piece of advice he had received. ‘It came from my piano teacher prior to a concert in Windsor,’ he said: ‘If you don’t have passion, then you have nothing. If you don’t believe in what you are doing, then why would anyone else?’

Furniture and flooring retailer Barker & Stonehouse has seen profits leap in the past financial year. Pre-tax profits rose by 37% to £4.05m in the 53 weeks to 3 April, according to accounts filed at Companies House. Turnover rose by 15.8% to £62.89m. In light of the profit increase, the dividend was increased from £182,000 to £561,000. The chain ended the period with cash of £4.457m, up from £3.163m. Bank loans rose from £8.957m to £14.546m. Of this £911,000 was due to repaid within a year, £9.6m within two to five years and £4.93m after five years. The chain is due to open its Hove store in the spring and later on a branch in Guildford will be opened.

Help the customer Sales people need to explain product details Ignorance was not bliss for the customer. She’d spent a large proportion of her savings on The Bed of Beds that was going to last her and her husband for the rest of their lives. It had electric motors, latex mattresses, a lifetime warranty and remote controls that could do everything. Everything, that is, except give her a comfortable night’s sleep. Her husband wasn’t sleeping well, either. The salesperson was delighted to see her when she went back into the store, until he heard about her complaint. Then he passed her on to an unsympathetic manager who told her that ‘comfort isn’t guaranteed’. After a heated exchange she gave up and left the shop. I heard this customer’s story over the phone. She was willing to commission me to inspect the bed in the hope of finding something that she could use as a lever to get her money back. I told her that’s not how it works, and we talked through the issues and the possible outcomes. I asked her whether she’d experimented with the adjustable

A zip on a non-removable cushion

20

Interiors Monthly January 2017

slats to find a firmness that was right for her. ‘What adjustable slats?’ she asked. While she was on the line she went to the bed and I explained where to find them and how to adjust them. She was the second customer with the same problem within a couple of months. Both had bought a premium product, but no-one had taken the time or trouble to go through the features and benefits, or to set it up properly. Furniture and flooring products are not usually complicated or high-tech, but even simple things that are obvious to us, because we’re in the trade, may not be known or understood by our customers. If we listen to their comments when things go wrong we can learn so much: How do I remove a drawer to retrieve something that’s gone down the back? What type of vacuum cleaner should I use on this carpet? Why have my cushions gone flat? But they are removable covers, look there’s a zip.

We don’t want to bring up negative things when we’re selling, but good customer information is not negative. It shows the customer we care and that we want them to get the best out of their purchase. It’s known as managing the customer’s expectations. A little more time spent at this stage will save considerably more time later. Product care guides and information leaflets can be helpful, but only when they reinforce what we’ve gone through. Most customers don’t read the manuals, they just want to ‘plug and play’. This customer’s story had a good outcome. When I spoke to her a week later she said she and her husband were sleeping comfortably at night. It had taken a few adjustments, but she soon found the right settings for her slatted base. She’d have found them sooner with a little more help from the salesperson. Life as it should be Habitat’s SS17 collection is in-store next month

Georgia cushion £40

‘Our new collection arrives in stores at Habitat in February 2017 and, as ever, brings with it a score of creative ideas from Habitat’s London design studio. Traditional craftsmanship sits alongside cool contemporary thinking, our designers taking inspiration from a range of influences to produce designs for inside and out and sourced from travels around the globe,’ says Polly Dickens, Habitat creative director. ‘Working with suppliers and craftspeople from 12 countries, we’ve curated a seasonal collection of 250 unique products that hero individual and affordable design. From exhibitionist statement pieces to understated, handmade crafts, each product has its own distinct design personality that reflects, in its own way, the Habitat philosophy of imagining life as it should be,’ adds Dickens. Visit: www.habitat.co.uk Lyle sofa £1,995, Javier floor lamp base £180, Drum silk lampshade £55, Drio cabinet £695, Merco vase £30, Sullivan vase £60, Sachi vase £50 and Leo rug £600

Cyra cushion £40

ARTISTIC FLAIR

Following on from the expressionist trend introduced for AW16, there are a lot of references to artistic techniques throughout SS17. In textiles especially, inspiration was from the paintings of Brazilian modernist landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx with their flat planes and curvy abstract shapes in interesting colour combinations. Habitat also experimented with the idea of ‘doodling’ as a more controlled but still spontaneous extension of the splattered designs in Rothco vase £30 the previous season.

HIGH STREET LUXE

Notts cushion £40

Interiors Monthly January 2017

‘We’ve seen demand for designs that incorporate traditionally luxe materials like marble and leather but used in contemporary, unusual ways – and at affordable prices (not much to ask!) – but I’m thrilled we’ve managed to achieve that this season,’ says Dickens. In leather there are two additions to the growing collection of handmade upholstery. Flynn is a big, soft floating shape on cast aluminium T-legs referencing classic Italian 1970s design. The simple stitching at the seams accentuates the purity of the shape and is produced in luxury leather, which is dyed in colour but otherwise completely natural – just lightly waxed to give it a velvety feel. Lyle is a more geometric shape but still squashy and inviting. The cushions have a neat tucked corner detail that softens the angularity of the shape on top of a chromed ski leg detail. It is produced in Rancho leather that is lightly buffed to make it silky with no artificial finish. Four new statement sculptural lights have been added to the collection, each with its own personality and each giving a different quality of light. Shelby is a half sphere on a magnetic marble base that sits on the floor casting a wide wash of light. Tuba references its name and feels like an eccentric piece of contemporary sculpture with the light thrown upwards for a strong atmospheric effect. Cinders is a series of tinted handmade glass shapes suspended on spun brass fittings. This is available as a statement cluster or single piece giving a gentle ambient light. Apex is made from clear faceted glass – a sculptural piece with a copper lamp holder making it a great showcase for interesting LED lightbulbs.

RETAIL NEW BLUE

This trend started as an accent colour in the palette for the season, but as it was trialled on product it worked so well that it was expanded it into a hero story in its own right. It is a true cobalt blue – vibrant and almost luminous – which mixes well with terracotta, mustard, smoky pink and black. It is the blue of Yves Klein, Matisse and Yves St Laurent’s Jardin Marjorelle.

Rohani side plate £8, Richie storage jar £12, Occhio jacquard cushion £50, Rohani dinner plate £10, Charlie felt cushion £70, Binx blue vase £50, Cobble blue bottle vase £35, Rohani pasta bowl £10, Saar blue vase £30, Zoe cushion £45, Lia mug £8, Maracay storage jar £20 and Maracay storage jar £15 Vix throw £60, Jilly cushion £35, Peggy throw £75, Topaz throw £60 and Jilly cushion £35

NEW KNITS AND LUXURY LINENS

Lightweight cotton knits and cushions add vibrant colour and texture to the collection this season. The Peggy throw is Dickens’ unexpected hero as she wasn’t on the design trip when it was created, so it was a wonderful surprise when this huge, oversized throw in her favourite colours of black/ivory and grass green arrived on her desk. The colour is so vibrant and the weight and size give it a luxury feel. Habitat has taken its first foray into luxury bedlinen with a focus on natural linens in chambray and simple colour wovens. These have all been treated to give a soft, rumpled finish. Knox planter £40, Betel rattan chaise £350 and Zoe cushion £45

RATTAN

Habitat is a little obsessed with rattan. But rightly so, the wonderful versatility of it as a material allows beautifully fluid shaped designs for the home. Moving the story forward for this season Habitat looked at a collection of new shapes for the Koba collection designed by Laure Grezard. Handmade in Indonesia these are expertly made and finished with black or green trim to give a relevant, contemporary edge.

Edmond rug £400, Dulcie rug £400, Leo rug £600 and Esbly rug £450

RUGS

Tingo double metal shelving unit £1,200 and Tingo single metal shelving unit £795

SKINNY LINEAR

Fine black outlines and elegant geometric frames are a big look this season across the collection resulting in a range of graphic designs. In lighting this is typified by the Quad ceiling light – its striking multilinear composition made from fine black wire in overlapping geometric shapes that cast beautiful shadows when lit. In furniture ‘skinny linear’ creates the sleek, sophisticated look of the Nestor tables with their luxe marble tops floating on skinny frames and, to different effect, the Tingo shelving designed by Matthew Long has unique sloping shelf detail to creating a quirkier, statement design.

Pattern designer Martha Coates has designed a variety of artworks using techniques ranging from hand-drawn sketches and paper cut collages to digital design. Working with one of Habitat’s oldest textile suppliers in India these ideas have been translated on to a range of luxury rugs that need great skill to produce. Leo is a handknotted rug in natural jute with a red, digitally designed geometric pattern, the jute giving a soft sheen and the hand-knotting giving a slightly shaggy appearance that contrasts its more formal pattern. Edmond is a fine hand-tufted rug in 100% wool with a black grid that is hand-carved at different lengths, giving a 3D effect that adds real depth to the design. Dulcie was created out of a paper cut collage and is produced in the same way as Edmond but in more vibrant effect with bold colours. Esbly is a colourful geometric design hand-tufted in wool and viscose – the viscose giving a sheen to the colours in the grid, against adding subtle texture and interest.

HAPPINESS

Sparking warmth and vitality, this season welcomes joyful yellow tones for a retro take on a country theme. Inspired by 1950’s patterns, Happiness merges the old and the new by bringing classic floral prints to life through modern printing techniques. Oozing enthusiasm, positivity and good vibes, painted ceramics and kitchen accessories are adorned with fun and happy slogans in graphic typography. For textiles it’s all about geo prints finished with colourful buttons, piped edges and blanket stitches. Combining bright and neutral tones throughout, handpainted cabinets, side tables and bar stools in canary yellow create a practical way of injecting colour to existing decor. With a nod to wildlife, farm animal-shaped accessories add a touch of character to this fun and colourful spring collection.

PIONEER

For those looking for a more refined or classic approach, Pioneer draws away from an urbanised lifestyle and adds a touch of nostalgia to the home. A delicate nature-inspired palette of lush green, dusky pink and sky blue adorn textiles and ceramics and is paired with rustic woods and galvanised, studded metals. Crafted, faded and distressed, apothecary-style furniture features aged, raw materials for a truly eclectic feel. Pretty ditsy print cushions and embroidered patchwork throws add femininity to this rustic theme while washed cotton bedding makes for a comfy and tactile collection. Embossed and glazed dinnerware continues the vintage theme, but is paired with flashes of copper for kitchen accessories that add a rustic edge.

Alongside 50 modern classic cars at its East Finchley showroom in north London, Hexagon Classic Design showcases furniture, ceramics, fine art, sculpture and photography as well as being a stockist of Knoll, Carl Hansen and Magis. Its most recent pop-up installation focused on contemporary furniture. Netherlands based Van Rossum exhibited

Started 40 years ago, Van Rossum’s ethos remains the same today – the best oak from the best sustainable sources, with wood that comes from one of the ancient forests in northern France. Only trees more than 100 years old are selected. All Van Rossum furniture is made to order and nothing is wasted. Different parts of the tree are used for different models, ensuring that Van Rossum gets the maximum out of each one. On every table, cabinet or chair

‘It is a privilege to bring these two worlds together’ Also on display was a diverse range from Swedish makers Källemo including the Star and Bruno chairs by Mats Theselius; Non chairs and table designed by Komplot; and the Pilaster bookshelf, designed by John Kandell. ‘Embarking on a show requires confidence in the pieces that we actually could live with. We source some of the world’s finest examples of natural and sustainable materials. ‘The sheer quality of the work in the showroom boasts materials which have their own imperfections and patina, something which evokes the same kind of emotional response as owning a classic car,’ says Racheline Michaels, Hexagon Classic Design curator, who has 35 years experience as an interiors designer. ‘It is a privilege to bring these two worlds together and we hope the pop-up exhibition offered people an insight into the attitude furniture suggests to us. herringbone-patterned flooring are trending,’ says judge Karl Wildermuth. The vintage, rustic look with knots and cracks has lost none of its appeal. ‘I was struck by many products having a rough appearance and making use of reclaimed materials. Wooden surfaces retaining raw and natural traits give rise to pleasing tactile and three-dimensional effects and offer the sensation of taking a walk in nature,’ remarks Manfred Haverkamp. Laminate flooring is also becoming more technologically sophisticated and versatile, while also featuring increasingly

realistic decors. Natural patterns and organic surfaces continue to dominate the scene. ‘It is often astonishing to see the extent of what is technologically possible. Also in the case of carpeting, the trend towards natural authenticity is everywhere to be seen, with some designs even imitating tree bark and other natural surfaces,’ observes Simone Knauss. ‘Even by himolla’s standards of innovation, there has never been a more exciting time for product launches, technological advances and creative design,’ says Sandra Gabler, himolla country manager for the UK and Ireland. She reckons, ‘2017 will be seen within the furniture industry as the year himolla sets new standards for comfort technology. ‘Avant-Garde will take centre stage by adding a supremely comfortable, curved multimedia sofa – complete with connectivity that includes bluetooth and USB speaker systems as well as phone and device chargers and drinks holders. There are two completely new corner groups with a choice of manual or

electrical operation, powered by as many as four smooth, near-silent motors. Plus ultra-comfortable touches like adjustable headrests and footrests,’ says Gabler. Also new for 2017 is the Cumuly Cygnet range of sofas and swivel chairs featuring high backs, manual or powered adjustable recliner actions and a wall hugger option. The Tanat range is now available with the Cumuly function while the company’s four motor lift and rise operation will now extend across a much wider range of chairs including Rhine, Brock, Sinatra, Armstrong, Chester, Humber, Tanat and Cygnet. ‘Design and style hasn’t been left behind in the technological revolution of

silky-smooth motion, wire-free battery packs and total adjustability. Among a host of other innovations, 2017 sees a new range of extremely luxurious Buffalo aniline leather, available in a whole palette of exciting new colours,’ she says. ‘But some aspects of himolla need no introduction. The 60 years of manufacturing experience that underlines the quality of every single one of our products, for example, as well as the determination to remain world leaders in creating unsurpassed sofas and recliner chairs,’ adds Gabler. The ranges will be introduced at The AIS Furniture Show from 20-23 January at Cranmore Park in Solihull. Visit: www.ultimatesofa.co.uk

Three dimensions Fibreline’s Encore cushion range has three versions Fibreline introduced Encore in 2010 but since then it has added two more variants. First there was Encore Fibre, a cushion that looks and feels like fibre but has the recovery of foam. This was followed by Encore Feather, a cushion that looks and feels like feather but also has the recovery performance of foam. The third addition is Springcore, with small pocket springs inserted into a shaped foam core. ‘For the first time a spring, foam cushion can now be made in almost any shape or size. This is a big advantage

52

over conventional spring cushions. Encore Fibre has been awarded the FIRA Gold seal of approval. In FIRA tests it outperformed all other fibre cushions,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. The Encore cushion range retains the casual look, and offers a four-year guarantee against sagging to give retailers confidence in its performance. As well as the standard Encore range, Fibreline has developed bespoke combination cushions for various manufacturers to provide a unique cushion feel to differentiate themselves from competitors.

Such has been the success of Encore that Fibreline has doubled its capacity to meet demand and installed new cutting and sewing technology. ‘We are also working with local colleges to tackle the shortage of trained sewing machinists in the industry. It’s a problem that the whole trade faces as the ageing skill base of machinists is a ticking time bomb. Fibreline, as ever, is looking long term at its capabilities in order to satisfy demand for UK made product in the years to come,’ adds Prudhoe. Visit: www.encorecushion.co.uk

Colour scheme Charltons is reaping the benefits of investment Charltons Furniture was one of the first UK furniture companies to invest heavily in an in-house paint shop. That investment has now paid off, with the company now recognised as one of the main suppliers of quality painted furniture. ‘We take colour seriously,’ says Ross Charlton, Charltons Furniture md, who headed a mbo at the company last year. ‘We looked carefully at the demand for painted furniture in the sector and far too many customers were being fobbed off with murky whites or anonymous greys. We therefore decided to offer genuine choice – with the customer being able to choose exactly what they want. No home is the same. There has been a big change in customer expectation and we have moved to meet that expectation,’ he says. Charltons has also been working hard to make the job of the retailer easier. Its innovative Make It Your Own App has proved successful, with consumers able to see for themselves exactly how their purchase will look in whatever colours, finishes or accessories have been chosen. This month the company is launching a website and updated POS, which will be on show at the January Furniture Show. ‘We are delighted to be back at JFS,’ says Steve Upperton, recently appointed head of sales. ‘The show will provide the venue for unveiling our new product range: Somerdale. We shall also be taking with us to Birmingham both the Eaton and the Vintage Collections. The show will also provide us with the opportunity to show off the exciting developments that are happening with the bestselling Bretagne Collection,’ he adds. Castelan has a Compliance and Insight team and wants to help retailers cement relationships with their customers

On the button Castelan’s managers have a wealth of experience Castelan prides itself on its ability to innovate and adapt to the changing landscape of the protection and insurance markets but it is also founded on deep experience within its management and field teams. While looking for new ways to reach and communicate with customers it is still hugely important to refine the way products are offered verbally and visually in face-to-face situations. ‘Key to this support is our regional development managers who have many years of combined experience in working with our clients to find the right ways to drive sales in stores. The team is able to deliver training on product knowledge and sales techniques from a one-to-one situation right up to working with groups of 200. Whatever suits your business the best is what we are able to deliver,’ says Richard Gretton, Castelan commercial director. To back up the sales activities of clients, and ensure compliance to current regulations, Castelan has a team dedicated to this task. The Compliance and Insight team keeps up to date with all Financial Conduct Authority announcements and requirements and works with clients to ensure sales are made in the right way

with the customer as the primary focus, says Gretton. The way customers want to shop and be communicated with is changing and the company provides dedicated resource into marketing schemes. It has in-house capabilities and systems that allow customers to register products and then be introduced to other services. ‘Looking to the future, we are constantly looking at ways of improving the technology we use, not only in terms

of our network, but also our ability to help our clients cement relationships with their customers,’ adds Gretton. Visit: www.castelangroup.com

PROTECTION

Feeling positive Guardsman remains optimistic and trains to gain As we face a new year with many unknowns still surrounding how and when the UK will exit the European Union, Phil Griffin, Guardsman md, is optimistic about the year ahead. ‘With the market already feeling the pressure of a weak pound, furniture retailers could be excused for fearing that we are headed back to the dark days which followed the 2008 financial crash. It’s true that overall consumer confidence in the economic situation has taken a downward turn but the propensity to make large value purchases remains positive, with furniture sales showing growth in November. As a business we feel optimistic about the future,’ he says. Guardsman furniture protection plans are margin rich giving retailers an opportunity to offset any potential sales volume decline by maximising their transactions.

Technicians received training in Italy

58

Interiors Monthly January 2017

‘These insurance backed plans are not sold at the expense of the consumer, but truly add value by providing protection for their investment and allowing them to relax and enjoy their furniture,’ he explains. Guardsman has invested in training and supports its retailers and their sales staff with an online course to ensure they know how to sell compliantly. This is followed up with face to face training sessions with its nationwide network of Guardsman account managers. ‘I’m delighted to say that despite a growing regulatory burden our system and training programme is delivering significant conversion rate improvements for our retail customers. Our training development is not limited to the retail side of the business: we have also made significant investment in training our repair network to further develop their

knowledge and expertise, ensuring they are familiar with the latest materials and repair techniques,’ he says. Guardsman operates with specialist technicians, skilled either in stain removal or furniture repairs. Specific training has been developed for the different groups with many of the repair technicians having recently returned from training in Italy provided by Guardsman leather specialist partner Fenice, a world leader in leather finishes. ‘In my experience when the market gets tough, good companies with a clear strategy both survive and thrive. So despite the challenges ahead we remain optimistic, because as market leader Guardsman has the solid foundations to support our retail partners and their customers, whatever the future holds,’ Griffin adds. PROTECTION The care kits have been revamped

Good value and care Furniture Clinic has enhanced its care kits Furniture Clinic has recently relaunched its Ultimate range of care kits for leather, fabric and wood. It is called the Ultimate range because instead of the industry standard of 250ml bottles in the kit, Furniture Clinic provides 500ml bottles. This represents great value for money as the customer gets a large boxed kit that will last for years. Even with the increased product size, the company says it is happy to keep the price the same, if not lower than most competitors. This is possible as it is the only UK manufacturer of the products so

60

Interiors Monthly January 2017

retailers are dealing direct with the source: avoiding import taxes, shipping and the recent weakening of the pound. At the January Furniture Show the kits will be available for only £7. With an RRP of £39.95 this represents a mark-up of almost 600%, or a giveaway to a customer to help seal the deal on a furniture sale. The Leather Care Kit, the most popular in the range contains 500ml Leather Ultra Clean, 500ml Leather Protection Cream, four leather cleaning wipes, two sponges and two cloths.

These kits are only available direct to retailers so cannot be found on eBay, Amazon or even the Furniture Clinic website at a lower price. They are exclusive to retailers to help protect stockist’s brands. In addition to the care kits, the company also provides specialist training courses in leather care and repair, a range of leather repair and restoration products, and has a nationwide network of branches offering a furniture repair service for retailers and manufacturers. Get the hang of artworks Rise Art changes the way consumers find and own original contemporary art Your customers have done you proud: they like the roomset so much they bought everything: sofa, recliner, dining table, chairs, crockery, cutlery, sideboard, home entertainment units, shelving and flooring. It was a very big order. Except they didn’t buy everything: the customers didn’t like the artwork that you’d hung above the sofa, and they weren’t entirely convinced about the others in the store. Your solution was to suggest they took a look at the thousands of artworks you could offer and see how it looked at home for a while. ‘Give it a few weeks and see what you think,’ you reassure them. But how can you do this, after all most retailers don’t have an Aladdin’s cave of artworks in the back of the shop? By logging on to Rise Art’s website. This allows you to see 5,000 works (with a trade discount of up to 15%). The customers can then decide what they want and rent it by the month to see if they like it. If they do like it, the first month’s rental is refunded and then 50% after that. For example, Data Block Print by Robin Tarbet costs £480 to buy or £54 a month to rent. ‘The art world can be complicated. There are so many factors to consider,

from whether the artist is collectable to making sure that the artwork will fit with the interior,’ says Scott Phillips, Rise Art co-founder. ‘At Rise Art we want contemporary art to be accessible, easy to understand, and simple to buy, whatever the budget, without fear of making a wrong choice and owning a piece of art which customers don’t like. Think of us as your personal art concierge but without the suit.’ The company offers contemporary artworks from more than 500 established and rising artists – all handpicked by Rise Art’s experts. They range from abstract paintings and figurative prints to cityscape photography and mixed media typography and more by artists including Kristjana S Williams, Mat Cahill, Bruce McLean, Tommy Clarke, Laura Jordan, Fernando Velazquez, Kelvin Okafor and Robin Friend. ‘The “Talk to a curator” feature provides a complimentary advisory service. The in-house team of curators, with many years experience and in-depth industry knowledge, is on hand to offer personalised recommendations to suit the buyers’ needs,’ says Marcos Steverlyck, Rise Art co-founder. Street life Studio by Silentnight interacts with shoppers Following the introduction of Studio by Silentnight at The Bed Show in September, the company launched a five-month marketing campaign targeted at younger, style conscious consumers, particularly those in city locations, or who show online signs of being in the market for a new bed. This campaign was developed with aspects for both the media and consumers with a variety of communications to raise brand awareness and maximise reach. The brand took to the streets with two pop-up stores in Shoreditch and Piccadilly in London (a third is planned for Leeds soon), encouraging consumers to experience Studio by Silentnight for themselves: to design the bed and top it with the mattress comfort to suit them. VIP guests also visited the shops, with consumers expressing great feedback for the products and the brand itself. Some of the comments included: ‘We came yesterday and just had to come back,’; ‘This is the best thing ever,’; ‘I loved it, 10/10,’; ‘What an incredible experience, I’ll bring my girlfriend back here tomorrow’; and ‘How long are you here for?’ The campaign secured three large

Relyon has been rolling out its new display system. More than 70 stores have received the update as part of a £500,000 investment by the bed manufacturer. The update was previewed at The Bed Show in September and Fenwick of Leicester was the first store to receive the new display stand. It replaced its Classic collection of beds for five of the top of the range Heritage Collection models. ‘The Relyon Heritage Collection is a range of beds of such outstanding quality and the new display stands really work to amplify the message of luxury and hand-crafted quality to the end customer,’ says David Wescomb, Relyon brand director. Cologne calls again Somnus will focus on two ranges at imm Cologne Somnus is returning to imm Cologne for the sixth consecutive year to showcase its special edition model, Sirius, and leading Veritas collection. Sirius is the latest addition from Somnus designed for the export market and incorporating its patented Sensa Intelligent pocket springs and British Eco Wool. The hand-made bed benefits from 4,260 Sensa Intelligent pocket springs. These gently respond to the body, dissipating weight to provide better postural support and enabling the fillings to bounce back to their original position using less turn technology. This means the mattress doesn’t need to be turned or rotated as often as some other mattresses. Also on display will be Veritas. Launched at imm Cologne in 2016, the collection has received a great reception. With stockists in Germany, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, the brand is looking to expand its distribution further through new retail stockists across Europe. Veritas also features Sensa Intelligent springs technology. The springs are complemented with layers of natural fillings, many of which are grown on the manufacturer’s 300acre farm in Yorkshire.

Somnus will be exhibiting in Cologne for the sixth consecutive year

The natural fillings offer unique properties that benefit the mattress, the sleeper, and the environment. Wool is inherently fire retardant, which means that chemicals are not required in the filling and it also regulates body temperature. Hemp and flax are naturally antibacterial and resistant to mildew, so mattresses stay clean, dry and fresh throughout their lifetime.

Somnus has also invested time in developing its headboards and divan bases with soft-close drawers, complementing them with a selection of fashion-led fabrics inspired by the latest colour trends. With 54 fabric options, Somnus will introduce new colours this season including a burnt orange and deep burgundy. Visit: www.somnus.co.uk

Light fantastic LED lighting is at the centre of Matteo Nunziati’s collections One of the first designers to be fired with enthusiasm by the idea of Italian bed, bedroom and upholstery company Flou’s Natevo brand was Matteo Nunziati, who designed a collection of furniture with integrated light: Continuum. Once produced, he experimented the validity of his designs by furnishing an apartment in the residences designed by the late Zaha Hadid in the futuristic complex Milano CityLife. ‚‚‚

BEDS AND BEDROOM He also developed the LED lighting technology of the pieces to optimise and calibrate the light emitted by the furniture in the various rooms (there is also living room furniture), revealing their emotional personality and stature as independent light sources. The beauty of the composition is enhanced by the light emitted from the LED light fittings integrated in the structure. Continuum combines the bronze colour of the structure and the grey of the Epoque grey finish of the shelves and the back panels, while the LEDs add a suggestive touch to the bronzed structure and the Continuum finish. Continuum in the bedroom positions the bed at the centre of an arrangement illuminated by LEDs with zoned illumination modes inserted in the uprights. The elements of the structure are Gris sablĂŠ with a light grey finish and River, for the shelves and back panels. A slim walk-in wardrobe that is strong, versatile, functional, ideal as shelving, storage, for hanging, stacking, tidying clothes, shoes, bags, scarves, lingerie, throws, blankets, sheets and pillows. The variety of linear or corner arrangements is almost endless and can be studied and adapted to optimise the available space. The LED light fittings have been strategically integrated in the upright components ensuring perfect visibility: no corners will ever be left in the dark. In addition to the units for the living and sleeping quarters, the bookcase and the walk-in closet, the Continuum collection

also includes a special frame consisting of a luminous beam that can be added around the wardrobes and the beds. The beam frames the area behind the bed with zoned illumination modes with a soft light on both incorporated nightstands. This solution expands the space of the shelving that would otherwise be occupied by lamps. As well as Continuum, Nunziati created Kara, which includes a dressing table allowing users to check their appearance from all angles thanks to a collection of LED illuminated mirrors in a range of sizes. A piece of furniture designed for beauty with its sinuous structure supported by slim metal legs in an antique gold finish beneath the luxurious marble top in gold polished Calacatta, with large, rounded drawers. Upstairs and downstairs Sweet Dreams will add to its upholstery and bed ranges ‘We’re looking forward to showing off our collections at the unmissable January Furniture Show, most particularly our upholstery. This is the first exhibition of the range since it came back under the Sweet Dreams umbrella – although we still like to refer to the downstairs collection as our Comfort Zone,’ says Jackie McGarvey, Sweet Dreams general manager. ‘The British-made collection boasts similar breadth and depth as previously. The choice of fabrics is a little less extensive – and we have been told that’s a positive – but more focused. The quality specifications are the same, the models all carry a five-year warranty and, crucially, the two to three week delivery on all options (10 working days for most) is unchanged. At the NEC, we’ll be taking the opportunity to exhibit some of the

models which haven’t been seen beyond our showroom before, as well as showing off our most popular models in fresh fabrics. We anticipate the British-made sofa designs in their new colours will attract a lot of attention.’ On show for the first time is imported upholstery. ‘We’re introducing four ranges: three leather-look and one fabric. Amalfi, in chocolate leather-look and comprising a two-and-a-half seater and a two-seater sofa, as well as a matching storage stool, boasts a power recliner to all four sitting positions and USB charging points. There’s a pocket spring unit to the seat cushions, a spring suspension system to the base and use of fibre, Dacron, PE foam and other luxury fillings to promote long-lasting comfort. A seriously good-looking sofa, Amalfi epitomises modern styling

‘We anticipate a strong take-up for our special show offers’ without sacrificing support and a superb sit,’ says McGarvey. The two other leather-look sofas, Genoa and Capri, have manual recliners. Capri comes in a 3-2-1 format, Genoa a two-seater and three-seater. Both come in the chocolate colourway and both feature a pocket spring unit to the seat cushions and spring suspension system to the base. Ravenna, in fabric, is a 3-2-1 plus storage stool with manual recliners. It also features springs to seat cushions

and base for comfort and support. Sweet Dreams is best known for its own-manufactured beds and mattresses and these will be at the heart of the display. ‘Our Pocket Air collection of divans, relaunched with entirely fresh models last September, will be shown with models not previously exhibited. Among these will be Clarence 4000. In common with all divans from the collection, the spring system features alternate shortened pocket springs to provide a sensational, flexible feel as the springs contract and the volume of air increases. The sleeper’s weight is evenly distributed for comfort,’ she says. For Clarence, the mattress cover contains cashmere and the microquilting beneath contains both cashmere and wool. The damask border comes in two colourways, wheat and nickel, to match the divan base. Three sizes and a range of storage options to the base, including three styles of ottoman, is standard to all beds in the collection, together with quality finishing to both mattress and base. Other divan collections will be on show, including favourite models from the Royal Pillowtop, Enchanted and Pocket Spring collections. ‘As usual, we anticipate a strong takeup for our special show offers on mattresses and we’ll be displaying more on our range of bedframes, which they’re designed to complement. We’ll be revealing several new bedframes at the show, encompassing upholstered and wooden styles. Oldman, Lee and Ryder are three of our new fabric frames: Oldman a smart sleighbed, Lee a classic, understated frame, and Ryder sporting a winged headboard and gas-lift ottoman storage. All come in two colourways and two sizes. Flying the flag for wooden frames comes the new Grant, and the new white option for popular sleighbed Pacino,’ she says. ‘Our collections don’t stop here, but extend to bedroom furniture with strong sellers Kramer and Perry, new children’s bunk Jolly Roger – and our latest sofabeds. Here we’ll be launching three clic-clac models; swish Texas, in brown or grey fabric with shaped styling, Iowa, also in fabric with two scatter cushions included and Ohio, in brown or black leather-look,’ adds McGarvey. Launches en masse Gallery Direct will introduce more than 300 products Gallery Direct’s design team has been developing products across all its brands for the show. New framed mirrors will expand the Scandi and Glimmer looks. ‘We have seen a continued rise in demand for simple modern mirrors with sleek lines and contemporary framing. Large round mirrors and full-length dress mirrors continue to be key models in the market. Contemporary elegance has been a mantra for the team and I throughout the design process this year,’ says Mat Penney, Gallery Direct product director. Accessories will also be expanded, including lighting, clocks and faux flora. ‘Lighting is incredibly important to give a room the desired atmosphere: a carefully selected and placed lamp can add character and ambience to a room. I love our new range of faux cacti and plants: they are so easy to place and add depth to every interior style. And we are adding to our Kilburn & Scott and Parisian House brands with new ceramics and decorative accessories, to complement the soft furnishings,’ he says.

Following its successful AW 2016 textiles collection, it is building on the mineral theme with a variety of products. It is also introducing geometric design items, along with a tropical look, featuring pineapples and flamingoes. Furniture launches include three

dining ranges: Mustique, Cleo Marble and Emperor Marble, along with the Pompeii occasional collection. Mustique is crafted with parquet inlaid veneer work. Using Mindy wood, this collection is weathered and lightly brushed to represent a French beachside villa veranda open to the elements for natural ageing. Pompeii features ceramic fire glazed tiles finished in metallic bronze. Cleo and Emperor Marble both have brushed bronze metal bases. Cleo features white marble with subtle tones in the grain, while Emperor brown marble has rich tones of brown in the grain. There is also a new dining chair, Nero, to coordinate with Cleo and Emperor, as well as the Kielder and Chilson tables. The Wycombe and Kielder furniture ranges will be expanded, along with the Chic bedroom collection with a 6ft bedstead and a silver leaf finish added, while Spire and Safari will have new bedsteads to boost the Frank Hudson offer. As nature intended Collins and Hayes will highlight its unique manufacturing process

Left: Gracie Below: Duggie

Collins and Hayes has a unique approach in the manufacture of its upholstery. By bonding a wool interliner to a fully boarded frame it leaves natural fabrics, which have 75% plus natural yarns, free from back coating chemicals. This solution allows the fabric to breathe, be chemical free and as soft and supple as it was intended. Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md, says boarding the outside of its sofa frames improves the longevity and performance of the furniture. New POS material supporting the brand with its unique natural fabric solution will be on display along with several product debuts. ‘Duggie is an elegant, slim-arm, highback accent chair with twin-needle tailoring over the arm and subtle wing detail. A comfortable classic with a twist, and perfectly paired with our Gracie sofa and unit range,’ he says. Underneath its supportive fixed cushion back are superloop springs. The fibre wrapped foam lugged seat cushion sits on top of a serpentine sprung base unit. Gracie suits all users with its high back, generous seat proportions and contemporary styling. A softly contoured arm with wing detail and mixed scatterbacks allows for a mixture of fabrics. Its sofa and sectional unit system maximises on seating with its useful corner while the solid wooden plinth has stylish shadow gap detailing.

CONCEPT ME IN TWO AND A HALF WORDS. concept me can be many things. Individual. Functional. So it fits easily and snugly into your own life.

INDIVIDUALITY

FUNCTION

You don’t have to – but with concept me you can let your creative spirit run wild. concept me has so many different faces – from timeless simplicity to an individual off-beat personality. Everything you need to turn your own ideal bedroom concept into a reality. With three striking styles – ‘pure’, ‘natural’ and ‘offbeat’ – they provide the basis for a virtually limitless range of combinations. Yet there is something very practical that runs at the heart of planning and designing with concept me:

Furniture lives among people. You don’t live next to it but with it. In other words, it’s not just for admiring but something that you also have to enjoy using. Where are my favourite books? Where is the storage space for my bed linen? Can I charge my mobile phone by the bed? And which one of us actually gets up first in the morning? We have listened to your questions. And found answers.

SIMPLICITY. Your ideas. An amazing number of possible combinations. And the result? A bedroom with a very special personality. Your own.

Intelligent functions characterise a piece of furniture just as much as its design and finish. Doors which are light and compact are a pleasure to open. Storage space not only helps you to keep things tidy but also increases the pleasure of tidying. We think you’ll agree that the functionality of furniture has a major influence on our lives. Nowhere is this more apparent or tangible than with concept me.

All about you Nolte’s latest brand is non-conformist Alongside the Livia and Novara ranges – offering new colour and handle options – and a new look UK brochure, Nolte will introduce the Concept Me brand. ‘We considered what makes people unique and why they often seek unusual or individual products. There is no doubt that there is an immense variety of bedroom furniture available at the moment, but people today no longer like to conform to a pre-defined model. They want furniture that adapts with them, something that reflects the challenges of their life situations both today and in the future’, says Steffen Urbschat, Nolte md. He says individuality and character are the core values of the range. ‘The only way we allow Concept Me to conform is in creating a bedroom where people feel safe and comfortable. The name represents a product that could have been tailored to my needs. Concept Me allows your creative spirit to run wild, everything you need to turn your own ideal bedroom concept into a reality. Concept Me encompasses the whole Nolte ethos and gives individuality, functionality and simplicity,’ he adds. Visit: www.nolte-moebel.de/en

INTRODUCTION

The January Furniture Show team has worked incredibly hard to develop an event that will meet the expectations of both visitors and exhibitors alike, which is no mean feat. When SMG was asked to consult on the development of a flooring showcase a couple of years ago, we hoped that it would be embraced by the industry and are delighted that it has been a success. This year it promises to be a great event that will represent the best of the furnishings industry and a massive draw for all professional retailers across the UK. Its historic January timing couldn’t be more perfect and being located at the NEC makes it a very easy event to attend, there’s even a Sunday opening. The Flooring Showcase is a Who’s Who of the best manufacturers and suppliers in the UK flooring industry. With more than 20 of the best suppliers it is an event that is relevant to traditional flooring retailers and furniture retailers with a flooring department as you will see class leading products in carpet, rugs, underlay, vinyl, wood and accessories. While some products will be familiar, many suppliers will be using The Flooring Showcase as a springboard for new products and this will give visitors a distinct advantage over their competitors. Many retailers with established flooring departments will be thinking of diversifying their offering and the January Furniture Show is an ideal opportunity to see a host of companies representing the best of the furnishings industry as well as spending some quality time with the top flooring suppliers. For retailers who are thinking of joining a buying group, or at least want to find out more, SMG will of course be on The Flooring Showcase. We are proud to have been voted Best Business Support winner by readers of Interiors Monthly and our industry specialised Business Support Membership will suit all retailers visiting the January Furniture Show and deliver savings across your back-office. If you have a flooring department, the full SMG membership is guaranteed to increase your profitability. I hope you will join us in making the show a success and add it as a regular event in your diary. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

Hot, hot, hot Vibrant colours from Brockway Brockway is rolling out the red carpet to celebrate its top picks for the New Year. Making its debut is Solar in Chilli, one of 64 vibrant colours in the flagship two-ply 50oz Solar carpet collection. ‘Combining superb quality and exciting on-trend colours, Solar is designed to uplift and inspire, and is a great choice for a striking look,’ says Shaun Lewis, Brockway sales director. Consumers can also create their own unique colour carpet with Solar Infinity, the manufacturer’s bespoke colour matching service. Brockway will match any colour provided by the customer for minimum orders of 25sqm, in any weight from 40oz to 90oz in the Solar two-ply yarn, in 4m and 5m widths. Brockway’s Natural Tweed is a contemporary and soft loop pile carpet collection made from 100% undyed wool and woven in a striking herringbone design. ‘Available in eight natural tones from rich, cosy creams to light beiges and fashionable greys, this modern neutral palette gives the perfect textural interest for contemporary interior looks. Natural Tweed is hard wearing and will look good for much longer than the average carpet. Thanks to its undyed three-ply wool, it has a sublime super-soft feel underfoot,’ he says. Brockway’s award-winning Rare Breeds collection is now available in a contemporary and stylish looking loop pile. ‘Rare Breeds Loop offers ethical and environmental vision, together with understated yet undeniable luxury. Made from pure, undyed wool, blended to create warm, on trend, neutral shades that will enhance any room in the home, it is hard-wearing and luxurious,’ says Lewis. The three ranges feature Brockway’s Envirobac environmentally-friendly carpet backing. The lighter-weight backing is energy-efficient, effluent and emission-free and can be recycled at the end of its useful life. Visit: www.brockway.co.uk

Innovation in abundance Julian Bowen is looking to repeat the success of 2016

Julian Bowen ended 2016 with terrific momentum following the success of a record product launch at the January Furniture Show, a feat the team is looking to repeat this year as it unveils a broad array of ranges for 2017. Childrens’ furniture has remained a key focus, with the company continuing to develop innovative products. New for 2017 is the Pluto mid-sleeper, a fun and stylish product designed to optimise space in any bedroom with the versatility to be split down to a single bed if required. Finished in the company’s signature stone white finish, the Pluto mid-sleeper ties in seamlessly with the Cameo bedroom range. The Zodiac is an attractive and robust bunkbed in a brilliant white finish that splits into two single beds. A vibrant range of novelty beds, following in the footsteps of the iconic London Bus bunk, completes the line-up. Dining has been an important area of growth and Julian Bowen has continued to expand its range across different finishes and price points. Compact dining remains a strong theme, and the new Coast dining set offers modish style with the practicality of a circular double-

dropleaf table paired with an elegant, high-backed chair. In the same category, the Cleo dining range, which includes a lamp and coffee table, is an extension of the successful Cleo nest of tables, offering a classic design with an oak-effect finish. At the other end of the scale, the Pembroke dining range features an imposing Welsh oak-topped two-tone trestle style table, accompanied by elegant and refined upholstered chairs designed to add a wow factor to any dining room.

Building on the stellar success of last year’s fabric beds launch, existing models Ravello, Geneva and Sorrento all receive practical storage version. The range will be extended to include Blenheim, a winged bed finished in a grey velvet and Grosvenor, which has a classic scroll design in a sand linen finish. The new Rialto fabric bed offers contemporary clean lines in a crisp, grey linen and sits perfectly alongside the firm’s successful Manhattan bedroom range in white high gloss. SHOW GUIDE Left and below: Last year’s fundraising events included cycling to Bordeaux and the Christmas Ball at Minton Hall

Left: Damian Walters

Left: The charity provides support and assistance to those in need

The £100,000 challenge Climbing Mount Everest is the centre of the FMC’s 2017 fundraising The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity, will be fundraising at the show. Damian Walters, British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation chief executive, is attempting to raise £100,000 by scaling Mount Everest. Walters’ journey to the summit of Everest starts in April when he travels from London to Kathmandu, Nepal. The expedition will then fly to the Himalayan village of Lukla, which is perched on the mountainside at just over 9,000ft. From there, he will pass up the foothills of the Himalayas, before arriving at Everest base camp at just over 17,000ft. He’ll then spend three to four weeks acclimatising to the high altitude by tackling local peaks, before the climb up the southeast ridge of the mountain to the 29,029ft summit. ‘The majority of expeditions to Everest last about 64 days but there is only a few

138

Interiors Monthly January 2017

days dedicated to the summit push. The rest of the time is spent preparing physically and mentally for this demanding challenge,’ explains Walters. An experienced member of the mountaineering community, he first attempted Everest in 2010 but was forced to abandon the climb at 27,500ft due to severe altitude sickness. ‘Going back is an absolute must as I see this personally as unfinished business. As a corporate liveryman of The Furniture Makers’ Company, I am a huge supporter of the crucial work that it performs in the areas of welfare and education in particular. The opportunity of raising money for the charity is more than enough reason to tackle the mountain again,’ he says. ‘We’ve all seen the film and heard stories about the perils of climbing Mount Everest, but when you hear of someone you know climbing it, the sheer magnitude of the challenge hits home.

We’re deeply indebted to Damian for committing to raise such a substantial sum for the charity. Everyone at The Furniture Makers’ Company wishes him a safe trip there and back again,’ says Ben Burbidge, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company. The charity fosters and supports the industry by inspiring excellence, educating and supporting those in need. It encourages the highest standards and best practice in the design, making, marketing and selling of furniture and furnishings in the UK, through the award of its Guild Marks. It helps students and young people with grants, training and mentoring to encourage talent and safeguard the industry’s future. The FMC has several opportunities for companies and individuals who would like to sponsor Walters’ ascent, including having a logo or name printed on the silk flag that he will secure at the summit. Design to the letter

NT and NR will follow on from the DG (left) and TT (above and below) ranges

Kettle will add two ranges Kettle Interiors will be bringing two new ranges to the show. ‘The importance of trends and the effect of influencers – stylists, bloggers and journalists – shouldn’t be underestimated. We make it one of our priorities to ensure that our ranges are on the trend curve, so that retailers can respond to mainstream consumers with furniture that reflects the latest “hot look” without breaking the bank,’ says Simon Ainge, Kettle Interiors sales director. ‘The hygge trend has been a huge influence in interiors over the past year or so and it has refocused consumer eyes on Scandinavian interior style. With this in mind, we’re introducing the light oak NT range, which owes some of its design cues to Danish furniture. Of course, it is still important to make the collection accessible to a broad spectrum of homeowners, so we haven’t overdone the reference, just introduced gently curved edges and tapering legs to give the effect but to still make the collection relevant for most homes.’ In the NR collection, the company has embraced classic country style, this time with flag patterned grey lime-washed oak tops, a nod toward antique French provincial style, contrasted with white paint finish and brass-effect handles. Aimed at traditionalists, the collection taps into the luxe trend. A line of upholstered dining chairs will also be unveiled, in a choice of plain or button back. With a wing back style, the chairs are available in two colours. A year after its launch sister brand Wicker Merchant will introduce 25 lines, bringing retailers even more choice in natural wicker baskets, storage and furniture. ‘The Wicker Merchant’s expanding product line is testament to the success of the brand since its launch this time last year, with retailers appreciating the added value the complementing accessories and storage lines can bring to furniture stores,’ adds Ainge. Furniture Origins will add to its offer As well as new designs for 2017, Furniture Origins will showcase its chair offer. ‘Every retailer has their own individual style and needs a specific je ne sais quoi to capture their customers’ imagination. That is why we work closely with them to develop ranges that will appeal to their customer bases,’ says a company spokesman. Reacting to demands from stockists for a flexible upholstered chair offer, the company has developed chairs that can be used as accents or as part of a full display to transform the room and offer an alternative more aspirational look. ‘The key to this success has been our ability and willingness to offer more than 20 different upholstered chairs and stools from stock on mix and match container bases or wholesale through Classic Furniture. ‘At the January Furniture Show, we aim to further enhance our choice by introducing even more versatility and choice both in terms of design and lifestyle. As a supplier of choice for many multiple and independent retailers alike, we have created a strong on-trend diverse collection of individual pieces and ranges that stand out.’ Furniture Origins, tel: 01277 361 131

Ethical home of fine design Rowico UK will enhance its collections Rowico UK is displaying more of its timeworn style designs: the industrial themed casual/dining range Lowry, bedroom additions to the Purbeck and Rustica ranges and the living and dining painted range Warwick with subtle hues, limed timber and gentle meandering curves. ‘It’s an exciting time for Rowico UK: we have reached record levels of sales this year, with our 2016 order books demonstrating the increasing appeal of our ever developing product offer, qualified by a substantial increase in new customer orders, the majority of which, we are proud to say, are delivered in days and not months,’ says Caroline Henchcliffe, Rowiko UK UK business director. She says the company believes reliability, impeccable customer service and outstanding availability of UK held product, in conjunction with a passion to integrate sound environmental processes into its business practices, will ensure it will continue to be the ethical home of fine design and furniture. Its focus is the creation of products with customers in mind – their choice, their look – allowing integration of different pieces across ranges. The

craft-value of each piece is testament to the maker’s art and demonstrates not only innovation by design, but also guarantees a personalisation, while transforming everyday rooms into exciting functional spaces for casual, contemporary living. ‘Our care, service and product knowledge, our customers say, is second to none, and if that wasn’t praise enough, the industry also recognises that we are one of the few companies that acknowledge that furniture is a product of fine design and should therefore always be considered a decorative art form. This is why we pride ourselves on producing not only top-selling designs but high quality, desirable ranges that are ethically produced and great value for money,’ she explains. ‘As advocates of style, it is clear to us that these contemporary-modern collections all provide a distinctly different living statement and sophisticated charm, for which we are confident Rowico will receive an overwhelming response,’ adds Henchcliffe. Advanced support Mammoth will show off its latest upholstery Mammoth will highlight its latest sofas and rise and recline chairs using its medical grade foam combined with PostureCell technologies. Camden, Harrow and Richmond come as two and three-seaters and grand, standard or petite chair options. They are available in static, manual and automatic motions to suit a variety of needs. Following its collaboration with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and commendation from NHS Innovations North this year for making its technologies available to the public, the latest rise and recline collection has been designed to bring advanced health benefits to consumers with additional safety support when getting in and out of the chair. All Mammoth upholstery has integrated medical grade foam cushions for support and pressure relief and are available in an array of colour and fabric combinations, catering for any style and decor. They also come with a wide selection of scatter cushions. ‘We are dedicated to improving people’s lives through innovative design with comfort at the heart of everything we do. We are well known in the bed industry for our award-winning medical grade foam mattresses, so we wanted to

expand on that to offer 24/7 comfort to end-users. This is the reason we have developed our seating range and are branching out into other areas,’ says John Tuton, Mammoth founder. ‘From the outset, Mammoth has always done things differently. We have collaborated with sporting bodies and sleep and health experts to scientifically prove that our foam products really do work and we can give retailers research, facts and health awards to back up our story which offers a very strong selling

point. Our innovation and strong focus on the science of comfort has, this year, been recognised by the NHS which further reinforces the success of our healthcare-led approach.’ Also on show will be the Mammoth Hub: an interactive POS unit featuring a consumer information video, a full swatch offering and foam examples. The full collection will appear on the stand of Furnico, Mammoth’s licensed manufacturer. Visit: mammothcomfort.co.uk

PREVIEW Cappellini’s Drum

No limits

Cologne will see the year’s latest products and design talents

Kettal’s Cala

There are no longer any limitations on creativity in furnishing. Whether for the home or the office, hotels or other projects, exhibitors at imm Cologne are transforming daily items of furniture into special design objects. Exhibitors combine practicality with unorthodox design and colours. Today’s designs for furnishings often bear little resemblance to classical forms of furniture: tables become modern sculptures, armchairs abstract seating objects, and room dividers fascinating installations. The original function of the furniture is not impaired, rather it is expanded and given a new form. Products such as Okome, an upholstered seating arrangement, created for Alias by Japanese design studio Nendo, are just as functional as they are visually arresting. The design of the modular seats and backrests was inspired by the natural shapes of pebbles. Thanks to an ingenious system of connectors, the individual elements can be configured in nine different combinations. The result is an artful ensemble that suits the workplace just as well as the living room. Equally sculptural is the upholstered

seating arrangement of Affair, designed by Uwe Fischer for COR, to the latest edition of which new vertical elements have been added. Extended in this way, the modular seating system can be combined into single islands, quiet zones or room dividers, and can face in both directions. On the inside, it is possible to sit protected, while the backrests extend an invitation to casually lean against them, making for an unusual functional and aesthetic experience. The current trend towards freedom of form is in line with another contemporary trend – blending previously separate areas of life. As the office becomes ever more homely, and the home increasingly multifunctional, furniture can equally no longer be categorised into specific uses. Whether in the office or the home, Cappellini’s Drum armchair makes an impression that is as good as it is

abstract. The unusually shaped armchair, by Polish designer Mac Stopa, was inspired by hexagonal drum pads from the 1980s. Available in a range of colours and covers, and with matching furniture, the armchair can be arranged in different configurations. The use of multi-density polyurethane foam allows for the sculptural forms of the seat padding, the effect of which is intensified by the geometric, three-dimensional pattern of the covers. Given today’s freedom of design, even furniture classics are being reinterpreted and artfully morphed into an accentuation of their characteristic forms. When creating the Cala chair for Kettal, designer duo Doshi Levien was inspired by the iconic rattan armchair Emmanuelle. The new armchair with its unusually high back combines a strong physical presence with a transparent and light surface. The open rope ‚‚‚

mesh creates the appearance of a lattice window, which provides the seat with its unorthodox aesthetic. Based on where it is to be placed, the choice of metal coatings, rope colours and cushion fabrics offers options to match the design’s character to the environment. Artfully designed furniture can be stimulating – in the same way that abstract art is thought-provoking. Deviations in form, material and colour are energising and offer new sources of inspiration. Innovative materials and technologies are increasingly opening opportunities for design and manufacturing. What emerges as experimental formats and prototypes today will be presented as market-ready products at imm Cologne tomorrow. Anyone who thinks the furniture industry is a man’s world is mistaken: young female designers are conquering with their innovative designs. Armed with training, ambition and creativity, this emerging generation spots and develops trends, and is setting new standards in interior design. The imm Cologne Pure Talents contest offers up and coming talent the

166

Interiors Monthly January 2017

opportunity to present their prototypes and is seen as a career springboard. Elisa Strozyk took part in 2010 with her Wooden Carpet and found a producer for her design. North German firm Böwer manufactures her Wooden Carpets, made from a material as unusual as it is pleasant. Their unique feature is their flexible construction: they can be rolled up and shaped into objects in which they take on a sculptural appearance. Carina Deuschl works in product, interior and furniture design, and caused a sensation when she appeared in 2016’s Pure Talents. She reimagined the bathtub as a static object by developing a portable construction – and redefined bathing. Xtend is made of carbon fibre, weighs just 7kg and folds away to save space. Filled with water, the soft-padded, machine-washable fabric inlay provides more than just a new bathing experience – it is a model of skilled craftsmanship and has won her several awards. Like Strozyk and Deuschl, French designer Aurelie Hoegy featured among participants in Pure Talents. In 2016, she presented her striking, prize-winning design Dancers, a kind of hybrid between seating furniture and sculpture

that questions whether design always has to be functional. Hoegy transcends the paradigmatic statement of form follows function and demonstrates that design can be combined with other disciplines, such as art. The static and the mobile, stability and fragility merge in a single object in Dancers. Very much the opposite of Hoegy’s work, Anna Badur’s products appear delicate and restrained. Often an unusual idea is hidden behind an attractive design, as is the case in Drawn by Nature: here wind is used to paint textiles. It blows blue pigments over the wet material, producing unforeseeable effects. Badur works with serendipity, playing with unconventional methods, and achieves results that are as aesthetically exquisite as they are unexpected. Rendering the unusual and the unseen visible and tangible, uniting design with other disciplines, reinterpreting it, understanding it and putting it into practice is no easy task but all the more exciting for it. And it is one that this generation of young female designers has successfully accepted. Visit: www.imm-cologne.de

Every year it takes place in Guangzhou, Pazhou in March and in Shanghai, Hongqiao in September. CIFF connects the upstream and downstream industry, showcasing leading brands of home, outdoor, office, commercial and hotel furniture, home decor and textiles, furniture machinery and raw materials. In 2017, the exhibition space will cover 1.15m sqm with around 6,000 exhibitors and 250,000 buyers from some 200 countries and regions. The show’s success is based on several matching objectives: Brand matching: CIFF hosts about 70% of China’s top furniture brands. Trade matching: CIFF organises professional business matchmaking events for exhibitors and trade visitors from regions including Europe, the Middle East and South East Asia, creating a strong trade facilitating platform. Fashion matching: With more than 300 launching events, it is the first choice for companies to release the latest products. CIFF works with a renowned ecommerce platform to enable online exhibit demonstrations, drawing worldwide attention to the products. Design matching: The event continues to work with well known Chinese designers to organise the East Design Show, showing the charm of oriental masterpieces. It also partners with the

American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) and High Point Market Authority for the ASFD Pinnacle Asian Awards. This helps excellent design to break into the US market and translate into business. Technology matching: The latest customised techniques and smart technology, new machines and production modes are on display. In 2017, CIFF has customised and smart furniture sections in both March and September, expanding the scale of trendsetting products. Decoration matching: To promote a sound development of the soft decoration sector, the home decor section will be expanded. The first China Decoration Design Conference will be held, matching leading decoration brands with established interior designers worldwide.

The shows attract 250,000 visitors

The AIS Furniture Show Solihull 20-23 January

PREVIEW

Bonus event There will be many exclusives to be seen at Cranmore Park The sixth AIS Furniture Show continues to support the independent furniture retail community by offering a constructive, friendly buying environment. AIS welcomes members and nonmembers to the show, starting with a two-day members-only event before opening to the general industry for the final two days on Sunday 22 and Monday 23 January. Overlapping with the start of the January Furniture Show at the nearby NEC, the show promises a valuable detour, giving buyers a further reason to visit Birmingham in January with a refined choice of furniture in a unique, intimate and business focused environment, presenting the latest offers from selected suppliers from the AIS portfolio. Held at Cranmore Park, the group’s exhibition centre, the show offers free on-site parking, complimentary refreshments and catering. With a less hectic environment than other major

170

Interiors Monthly January 2017

shows, buyers will find time and space to discuss ranges and plan their buying strategy. ‘We’re not marketing it as an alternative show to the NEC, it is simply meant to help our preferred suppliers maximise the number of retailers they see, so it makes sense to hold it at the same time. Being so close to the NEC also makes it very easy for buyers to visit both,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home. He says retailers, as well as manufacturers, will favour the size of the show. ‘We will be presenting a range of well-known brands including Himolla, Venjakob and Habufa as well as some exciting AIS exclusives from leading brands such as Alstons, Parker Knoll, Duresta and G Plan. These will be accompanied by other established brands such as Chateau Dax, HTL and Primavera. ‘The AIS show is also hosting a number of suppliers who will only be exhibiting

at Cranmore Park this year. What buyers will find when they visit is a good mix of contemporary, transitional and traditional product ranges,’ he says. AIS is the leading independent buying group for home and fashion in the UK and Republic of Ireland. It has more than 250 retail members and an overall buying throughput of about £500m. It owns British brands Stag and Ducal and will be showcasing new ranges from both which are exclusively available to AIS members. ‘Any buyers interested in gaining access to these and other exclusive member-only products should consider joining AIS: the show provides a great opportunity to explore some of the value of being an AIS member and the furniture team would be delighted to meet you,’ says Mallinson. Cranmore Park can be found just off the M42 within a few minutes of Birmingham International rail and air links and the NEC. Visit: www.thefurniture-show.co.uk

PREVIEW Hospitality is a 2,152sqft space and lounge that brings visitors the best of Italy, whether in furniture production, design, or gourmet offerings. This feature area aims to bring some of Italy’s most original furniture pieces – which are often selected to decorate the most prestigious buildings – to Singapore and the region. The showcase will present the contemporary trend of juxtaposing current and technological furniture with some

pieces of tradition and rich history, emphasising the Italian savoir-faire. Visitors will be able to get a full experience of Italy at the lounge which will be presented in a neutral, welcoming, and elegant space with colours and textures designed to inspire. Italy and Singapore have built strong economic relations and the time is right for the furniture industries of both countries to further collaborate, according to IFFS, especially since the sector is a significant contributor to the Italian economy. The area will allow visitors to visualise how a lounge located in a hotel, in a VIP area of an airport and in an office building may look. Involving a range of products, the curated space and lounge will feature interior design, upholstery, lighting, and furniture. Another new feature area will highlight white. Designed by Nathan Yong, IFFS chief creative director, The White House will showcase selected works from key exhibitors, whose pieces are derived from the theme of whiteness. ‘Highlighting furniture pieces that embody the essence of white, the showcase will beautifully present these design qualities: clarity, purity, openness, efficiency, orderly, subtlety, positivity, balance and vitality. White is the colour of new beginnings, wiping the slate clean, so to speak. It is the blank canvas waiting to be written upon. While white isn’t stimulating to the senses, it opens the way for the creation of anything the mind can conceive,’ he says. ‘White contains an equal balance of all the colours of the spectrum, representing both the positive and negative aspects of all colours. Its basic feature is equality, implying fairness and impartiality, neutrality and independence. It awakens openness, growth, and creativity. You can’t hide behind it as it amplifies everything in its way. White is a colour of protection and encouragement, offering a sense of peace, calm, and comfort; it creates a sense of order and efficiency.’ Yong adds: ‘2017 is a new beginning where we must look at things differently. We have to reevaluate our values and direction in a world that is fast changing and evolving. I hope that this white space provides a platform to showcase that new vision from the exhibitors.’ Visit: www.iffs.com.sg
